Authors Note: I’m a little tired from posting that monster of a chapter for Rio yesterday — so until I regain some brain juice back I’ll share some little cutsie rambles about Nat/R from the htwswy-verse! I know you guys love this fic a lot so if you want to know more about it please know my anons are open!

• Natasha and you probably get another cat not long after you guys get super duper serious — Liho was so pissed

• Out of the two of you, believe it or not, Natasha’s likely less likely to start an argument and more likely to find a solution to one.

• It actually took a while for Yelena to warm up to you despite whatever we think we see in chapter 1. Natasha is her sister and nobody is good enough for her sister until she can decide they are. “A while” is actually six months — making the offhand Yelena-like comments even when she agreed to your attempts to reach out for hangouts to watch Studio Ghibli movies.

• When she does decide you’re perfect for Natasha [ “I’m glad you approve,” you told the blonde blandly as you sat across from her at breakfast, oatmeal untouched and eyes uncaring, “but we’ve been dating for a year now.” She pointedly ignored you, as she usually does. ] she goes to Natasha herself and says so.

• Natasha wasn’t amused.

• Natasha who doesn’t seek out cuddling at bedtime immediately due to her fear of what could happen if she’s tangled up with you during a night terror. Short of flinging you into the wall and making Tony pay a hefty repair fee, you weren’t sure there was much.

• She admired the size of your balls, honestly, considering she could kill you.

• You laughed at her despite the severity of the situation she felt — whereas you didn’t. You didn’t think she’d be able to before waking up.

• It turns out you were right — she always ended up awake with you somehow touching her. On top of her chest, curled up against her, spooning her, spooning you.

• When Natasha sat you down and told you the full story about her history — from the Red Room until the defeat of Thanos — you didn’t seem to know how to take it. But you did know how to respond to her opening up: you took care of her. You disappeared only to return with a dangling Liho in your arms and plopped her into Nat’s lap while you gathered various items for a lazy day on the couch.

—> “I need you to say something,” Natasha finally admitted after you hadn’t spoken about it for a few minutes, television murmuring in the background as she stroked Liho’s soft fur. “Just tell me what you’re thinking?”

—> You lifted your head off her shoulder to look directly at her. “I think,” you started slowly, picking at your leggings, “that you’re one of the bravest people I have ever met and the good you do in the world despite the amount of wrong it has done to you is a feat that I will always admire and love you for.”

—> It was a beautiful response — and not an “I’m so sorry” to be found in there either. She kissed you just to tell you how much it meant to her. That her past didn’t change how you in her eyes. As your partner, your fiercest protector, and your best friend.

• Natasha Romanoff who comes home busted up form missions and you hackle like a cat and fuss over her, poking and prodding each wound, demanding to know where they came from and “why the fuck did you come see me before going to Cho?” and only when did she notice you were in near tears did she stop coming to you before going to Cho.

• Natasha who finishes trying the coffee menu at her normal spot and approaches you about how it makes her feel.

—> You bring a list of suggestions for other local places in the city to start going to

—> It’s cute how she worries about never going back — but you make a promise that for every new place you try you always go to the usual spot once a week

• Natasha who notices your ticks and understands when you work as a way to self-soothe or self-harm.

• This causes her to visit more frequently and break the streak of the period you work so you can go to bed, or eat some food, take a shower — whatever it takes to get you away from the lab.

• Natasha who introduces you fully to the team. She looks entirely too proud of herself, eyes so lovely and soft, and you as Thor slams down the hammer and dares you to play the game nobody ( but Steve Rogers, but Thor conveniently leaves that out ) can win but him.

—> Natasha comforts you when you go :( after ten long minutes of attempting to peel that stupid hammer off the table while everyone eggs you on, knowing full well it won’t happen

—> “It was not a game you were excepted to win — none of us can,” she assured you.

• simon isn't a physical touch man unless youre in private but it takes a little bit. he won't be all over you when the two of you are out in public, especially on mission. but he'll do discreet little touches here and there (i.e put his hand on your upper arm, brush your shoulder, your knee, thigh) he'll even grab your pinky (he LOVES finger holding you cant change my mind)

• while simon would be absolutely infatuated with you, he'd also be terrified of you. he loves the thought of having you wrapped in his arms at night but the thought of him crushing or possibly hurting you shuts the idea out almost completely.

• this one is sad but he's hurt you before sleeping. he was definitely having a night terror, he's pushed you out of bed sometimes or woken up screaming. you didn't get to see that until farther along in the relationship though, he probably wouldn't physically sleep with you for maybe the first 6months to a year. it depends on ur dynamic :))

• as much as i know everyone thinks he'd be some mean, aggressive brute in bed... bro. he'd literally be so sweet. he'd take his time and make sure you felt loved. he likes to use his hands and mouth more than his yk, it just makes him feel like he's violating you less? idk how to explain it but he doesn't like receiving TOO much, like he won't ask for it every time but if you ever wanna really get him goin.. 🫣🫣🫣

• simon loves to take care of you, and the thing is you'll argue over it. (at least imc) but he'd definitely try and be the main caretaker of everything and i mean EVERYTHINGGGG, but he also likes ur independence :)) so u have your own job n your own money, he just likes to take care of the big things you pay for groceries n shit (when he's not looking)

• this man LOOOOOVES ur thighs. he loves just feeling his head squished in between the warmth. he loved feeling the skin squish between his fingers as he grabs your legs... esp when it jiggles after he spanks u. ANYWAYYYYYYYYY

• he loves cuddling whenever youre the little spoon in any shape or form. simon is ALWAYS holding you. his arms are wrapped around your form like a cocoon and he makes sure you're all cozied up against him. he also likes to make sure you're protected and one of the only ways he can do that is with his arms around you. he feels the safest with his arms wrapped around you, as do you.

• playing off that.. this man will literally murk a motherfucker if they LOOK at you wrong. (obviously not he'd just stare.. at them. very intensely) but if anyone ever put their hands on you in any sense of malice... i don't think for a second simon would hesitate.

• also... playing off sense. simon 100% knows when someone's bullshitting, or he can call anyone out within a minute. he's VERY good at reading people and truly can figure out their intentions quickly (obvs they can change or he can be wrong but like.. he's not 85% of the time.)

• once simon is comfortable enough with you, he'll come to you whenever he's having a moment and will allow you to basically cradle him until he doesn't need it anymore. he doesn't like to be squeezed tho (besides during ... but we knew that 😸) he just wants you to hold him and run ur fingers through his hair

• he talks a LITTLE bit more with you and his tone is a lot different and his voice is softer but he still doesn't talk a LOT. you do most of the talking but he prefers it that way because he loves listening to your voice. (he 100% calls you on missions whenever he can rather than text, he HATES texting)

• simon has cried to soap and roach about how he wants to love you but feels like he can’t. 100%.

• he only likes to be called simon when they’re at home, or in the bedroom. sometimes you’ve slipped up and he doesn’t mind :)

HEYYYY i read some of ur works and ur like a rlly good writer and i was wondering if u can make a fic where minho is playing league and y/n is all tired but cant fall asleep without him (as usual) and so hes so soft for her so ofc he lets her sit on his lap while he plays and she gives him a head massage and he falls even more in love w her so he eventually turns off the game but is already so comfortable that they just end up falling asleep on the chair and both wake up w neck pain and bickering abt whos fault it is💀

you stepped into the room, a soft purple light from the leds making minho’s face appear more softer. you smiled at that… before you realised what he’s doing.

“felix oh my god! you suck at this game!” lino yelled out, only to burst out laughing.

you stepped closer and tapped his shoulder, a frown on your face.

your boyfriend turned around, his features softening upon seeing you.

“what’s wrong?” he asked, tilting his head. he already had his headpiece moved so one of his ears was uncovered. he always did, just in case you needed something. just like now.

“i can’t fall asleep… you promised you’ll finish like… hour ago” you huffed and took a glance at the screen. and the tiny character moving around… or whatever was going on in the game.

“boo hoo, now come back or i’ll kick you out” han’s voice sounded up in his ears.

“i’m sorry” he sent you an apologetic look and muted himself (god forbid them hearing him all soft for you) “if you want you can stay with me for a bit and then we’ll go to sleep, okay? i promise i’ll be quick”

“you better be or else next time i’m cuddling dori to sleep” you huffed, a smirk tugging at your lips. minho shifted a bit, allowing you to plop down comfortably on his lap.

“just… be aware that they can get loud sometimes” lino hummed and looked you in the eye. you nodded lazily. before unmuting himself and going back to the game, he placed a soft kiss on your forehead.

while resting your face in the crook of his face, delighting his embrace, your fingers sneaked up to his neck. at first you just mindlessly played with the ends of his hair. ever since they started preparing for comeback, he kept his hair longer and you absolutely loved that.

you couldn’t help but snooze off a bit, listening to his friends’ voices. your hand traveled a bit up, massaging his scalp gently. and minho tried his best to calm down his racing heart.

“hey man you’re there?” felix’s sudden question made him snap back to reality… even though he didn’t even realise he’s spacing away.

because you’re just here, sleeping practically with your breath tickling his neck and you expect him not to… be stunned?

“yeah, yeah… sorry” he mumbled and placed a quick peck on your hair “i think i’ll get going”

“is it because of y/n? with all due respect… you’re no fun” jeongin spoke up, earning a giggle from all of them

“shut up. we’ll talk once you get a partner, brat” lino huffed and left the game “night night”

he closed all the apps and carefully took off the headphones. minho looked at you in awe, your quiet snoring making him smile gently.

now, he could wake you up and carry you to bed. but… he’s too lazy… besides, he’s comfortable like that!

with one slow spin and one hand holding you, he reached a blanket that he kept in case he got cold and covered you.

with one last kiss on your head, he leaned his neck against the heading and closed his eyes. god, he’s so whipped for you.

in fact, he’s so whipped that he let his neck suffer for the whole day (that’s what he says, at least).

“it’s your fault!” you whined, placing a hand on the back of your neck

“you suffocated me!” he groaned, copying your gesture. you punched his arm, bursting into laughter.

“are you suggesting i’m too heavy?! i’m offended. to death!” a dramatic huff left your mouth and you crossed your arms, looking away. the morning light shone through the curtains, making lino look up at you in awe (as always though)

“what am i supposed to do for you in order to forgive me?” he let out a deep sigh, fighting a smile

“a neck massage. and a big kiss” you grinned.

“i guess i can do that. however, i still stand by the face that you are the reason of our–“ he started teasingly

“oh just kiss me already” you chuckled and pulled him closer by his hoodie.

if his league game sessions were always to end up like that, he’s ready to play it all the time. despite the neck cramps.

Platonic Yandere Miguel O'Hara as a dad:

Okay, so im just gonna word vomit here and yall make sense of it, but like the first thing that comes to mind when I think about yandere dad Miguel is that him kidnapping daughter reader from a universe where he doesn't exist, so he's technically not breaking canon or whatever and really, it doesnt even matter if you're his bio kid or not, like u could be a literal random civilian but if he is drawn to u, then he is. And while some of yall say "oh come on, Miguel cant be like that. He doesn't make careless/thoughtless decisions like that" I'm sorry, but is this not the same person who had the nerve to step in as his dead self from an AU and sleep with his parallel universe's wife and father someone else's kid??? Granted, they did end up dying but really, the only difference between that decision and this decision to kidnap u is to make sure that u don't end up dyingggg.

Moving on, he kidnaps u, makes up some bs about your life being in danger and blah blah blah, you HAVE to stay by his side, okay??? And at first, reader is like "umm okay?" because who tf wouldnt agree with SPIDERMAN??? (especially one who looks like Miguel? he is already giving dad vibes)

And the thing with Miguel is that he super protective (because PTSD) and he's possessive too, so the only person you're allowed to hang out with is Mayday (she is the cutest, i would die to have a kid like her ngl) because he doesnt see her as a threat (someone who could take u away from him). ABSOLUTELY NO CONTACT with Miles (because he hates that kid, pain in his ass/bane of his existence) and pretty much all other spiderpersons as well because all of them are sarcastic and he does not need them rubbing off on u. The only other person he would trust u with is Peter B, probably when Miguel needs a babysitter (because u learned to mess with his tech-typy-locks and traps, so u need an actual person to keep eyes on u. curse the universe for u being smart like ur papa), and the biggest reason he does trust peter with u is because since peter is a father himself, he would definitely know that while miguel's methods are wrong, in his own way, he is protecting u, and peter b knows that he would do absolutely anything to keep his daughter safe too. Also- since peter has mayday, if he were to actually take u away from Miguel, then Miguel would 10000% kidnap mayday and use her against peter too until he inevitably has to return u to him.

Now Miguel is emotionally crippled due to his trauma, so he's not great at expressing his feelings, at least not when you're awake. When you're asleep, maybe his eyes turn a little softer, maybe he cups your cheek, some guilt and sadness swirling in his eyes when he sees your tear stained cheek (because u missed ur family. or maybe u got told off by Miguel in front of everyone), presses a soft kiss to your forehead and mumbles something in spanish ("you will understand in due time, mi hija.") Definitely has cameras in your room, so he looks at you through the screen and sighs when u flop on the bed and stuff your head in the pillow and start crying, heart slightly heavy with guilt.

Except from interacting with others and leaving the spider society/his apartment (idk where he lives), every need of yours is pretty much taken care of IF you follow his rules. If you behave, u get everything. If u yell at him, try to break out of his place etc, privileges are revoked and BAM, you are now confined to your room with no access to entertainment or any of your hobbies he allowed u to have. Those novels u liked to read? Too bad, they get thrown in the fireplace. Gaming console? Broken in his hands. Liked to cook/bake? No access to kitchen because u are now locked in your room.

Miguel has one important rule- you MUST obey him, under all circumstances, no questions asked. If he tells you to go to your room, honey go before his eyes turn sharp and he has to manhandle you. If he tells you to eat dinner with him, you need to eat food even if you are full. And if he's forbidden you from going to the locked room in his place that's full of info on you and your old fam, then its best for everyone for u to obey.

Now, while Miguel does have trouble expressing emotions (i mean, the most affection he's shown is head pats and if u are really really sad, then yes, smooches on the forehead.) but he has no trouble expressing anger and rage. If u mess up real bad, in the sense where u disobey him and end up hurting yourself (no matter to what degree), GIRL HE IS SCREAMING HIS HEAD OFF AT YOU (like the scene from the movie where he's yelling at miles). I mean, he's so mad, he legit picks you up and hauls you to your room, where he's yelling at u even more, using the terms "child" "kid" and patronising tone because you may think you're a grown up (u might even be) but he will ALWAYS view u as a kid- THE KID he lost, the child he promised to protect and somehow get redemption, or at the very least, fill the empty hole in his heart.

And since nobody thought to inform me that my man Miguel is a literal VAMPIRE and that his fangs are not just for show to attract all kinds of viewrs, we gonna talk about that as well. Does he use them on reader when she finds out that Miguel actually fucking murdered her real fam (maybe not directly kill them, because he is a hero after all. Maybe in the sense that he knew they were gonna die, you would too unless he took u away, he just didnt bother calculating the repercussions if he did indeed save your family.) and reader is now hyperventilating and trying to claw her way out of his arms but muscled arms only pull u tighter against his chest and he just bites ur neck to let the venom paralyse you long enough for him to not only offer an explanation for his actions, but also put a tracker in you and chain u to your bed.

Does Miguel's heart absolutely shatter at your body wracking sobs and distressed state as you realise you have lost your family? Yes. Does he apologise? Never. Does he like seeing you in pain? NO. Will he cause you even more pain? ...yes, if circumstances change.

Hurting you is the last the thing he's do, but its still something he would do. He wont enjoy it, but if u messed up real bad (escaped and endangered yourself) then Miguel, with a very heavy heart will snap your ankles and limit your ability to walk for months (if not for life). This is one of his harshest punishments, and punishments are immeadiately followed with comfort, so Miguel does put your fractured bones in a cast and wipes the tears from his eyes, shushing you gently as he softly explains why he did what he did, how you dont need to worry about anything because since you took your punishment so well, Miguel will help you (he will carry you around everywhere), and maybe if you're in too much pain, he may give you some drugs(or even his venom) to put you to sleep right away.

He has lost too much, too many times. His wounds are deep and still fresh, he is not taking any chances... especially not with you.

First off, your newest Kuroo story WRECKED ME. OMMMMMG LIKE IT'S SOOO FUCKING GOOD. You are one of the most incredible writers ever, like professional style writing. These should be books and you should get paid for it, honestly. Your skill is totally unmatched, my friend. I just adore everything you write. I had two questions thou about the story, just because I am totally obsessed by it- so has Kuroo been obsessed with her since he saw her, I'm like curious how his obsession started 

like is it because she's young and he's interested? Cuz I totally got the vibes at the party that he was showing her off like she was his girlfriend and he seems like he has been wanting her for awhile. I was just curious about how it started cuz god I'm a simp for yandere kuroo- boss man Kuroo would make me weakkkkk. My second question is so is he like obsessively in love with her or is it like just a this hot piece of ass is mine to fuck kinda thing? Like does he want a relationship?

so, like with all my fics i kind of have a ‘read into it how you want’ thing going for it. whether or not kuroo actually has ‘romantic’ (i use that word loosely) feelings for the reader or whether he just enjoys fucking her because he’s in a position of power and she’s easily manipulated is left a little up to your interpretation and how you’d prefer to imagine it. however, having said that there are little hints throughout the fic that imply that there’s a little more depth to kuroo’s feelings. you’re not wrong with the whole ‘showing her off’ vibe at the party, and there’s mentions of confessions that kuroo gives while he’s fucking the reader - also the title of the fic, invidia, means envy in latin. so take that how you will 🤷‍♀️

and as far as how it all began, i like to think that it was kind of a slow build. again it’s implied that kuroo has met the reader (however briefly) a few times before - at games as nekoma’s manager, when she initially was introduced as his girlfriend and she has stayed over at their place in the past. it wasn’t so much a singular moment, but kuroo’s definitely been paying more attention to her than she realises.

Hi i absolutely love the kuroo fic at first no one would actually notice he was into and then story actually rises nicely however i would like to ask like what happens later im sorry im a little burnt out from my mountains of assignments that i cant think of a possible aftermath since the story had an open ending but yeah what happens later after the whole scene does y/n stay there for the 7 days and get r*ped again or she goes home early and like what happens to kuroo and shinsuke im sorry for annoying you with questions its fully up to you whether u would like to answer or not :-)

Honestly again, it’s kind of left up to what you like to think would happen, but personally I think that the reader stays, because there’s no easy way to get out of that situation without raising suspicion - which means that she then has to spend the next week trying unwittingly playing cat and mouse with Kuroo who’s gonna use every damn opportunity he has to push your boundaries 👀

like literally he cant be wrong or do wrong ever, it was so tough on a little boy, his friends would go out and have fun and he had to learn how to speak 4 different languages just because his parents wanted him to be the ABSOLUTE POSTER CHILD,

come around middle school that’s when he realized... none of this is real... who the fuck is being so robotic for? so he began to act out just a tiny wee bit ya kno, maybe speaking out, sneaking out late at night, doing shady things with friends, having horrible sex at 14, just the small acts, although when he was caught sneaking out his dad had him watched 24/7 on camera and with a guard... kinda drastic but these ppl arent sane

now come  high school, he was breaking free of this robotic nature his parents made for him, his robotic responses became his own, his robtic movements became his own, he wanted to be HIMSELF and that all went down hill rly when he went to jail for trespassing with a few friends, parents cleaned it up, had another guard on his ass 24/7 all throughout high school. he was miserable

now college he began to shine

adonis is rly smart, like he’s rly capable of being a good kid, doing good but he’s been forced to do good all his lif that he’s so over it, he wants to fuck around, get fucked and just live his life he never could

in college he would do the ABSOLUTE MOSTTTT in undergrad, he would deliberately steal things, get arrested, anything to have his name in headlines to piss off mom and dad and guess waht? tehy cant do anything lmfao

he’d be hanging around the wrong crowd, going streaking in neighborhoods, doing lines with different frats, breaking into school after hours, sleeping with his professors, again.. all of it would be cleaned up

now he’s 24 and he’s still the same  but worse, he genuinely is not. a good kid anymore, he’s unhinged, he’s in jail every other weekend, yet somehow at the top of his class, he’s tryna get mommy and daddy’s attetnion but at this point they have completely lost interest and ahve been focusing on their music, he’ll crash events all drunk and disheveled, he’ll cause after party troubles, he’ll pick fights with everyone, he’ll manipulate lies to make himself look, he’ll make sure everyone knows he’s not here to be ur friend, he’ll spread lies and rumors bc he’s bored.. he’s... smthn 

but on the softer note, he’s rly passionate about his music jsut like dad, he’s also a rly good artist !! gna say he has a secret soundcloud where he makes lofi beats

when he’s sad with his life and has no idea how to admit it, he’ll pour that into his composing and he’s good at that

I'm curious about something, but I can't find an answer on your blog, or maybe I'm missing it. Did you enjoy Captive Prince v. 1 or find it really hard to get through? Because it's full of dominance, humiliation, dubcon/noncon, incest, etc. If all that isn't an issue for you, Captive Prince v. 1 really shouldn't be a problem at all. And I don't think I've ever come across anyone who didn't think it was problematic.

Uh i mean you’ve pretty much answered your own question :’) none of those major themes you’ve described are any kind of squick for me, so personally i have little problem with the content from a personal standpoint. I acknowledge that as a book its social commentary is a bit more on the nose than the others, the treatment of slaves, the helplessness of indentured servitude and power imbalances are heavily present and depicted very explicitly and sometimes very traumatically, and there are a few moments where you have to sit back and be like DAMN pacat just went here (rip Damen’s back) but like,,,, in the way you describe, i don’t see it as ‘problematic’, it’s not something we need to sit back and shit all over for having those themes, and I know a lot of people who agree with me on that. V1 is a heavily genred book, and there is a pretty significant genre dissonance between book 1 and 3, but in short: yes, i absolutely enjoyed and continue to enjoy to this day v1. Find out why below! ;)

v1 It wasn’t at all what I expected when i read the blurb for the series, and i spent most of it in a fevered haze trying to figure out how the FUCK laurent and damen are supposed to end up together, but the thing was fucking engrossing. I binged it, i was hooked from the start, it was an incredible journey and i loved every second of it. I think it is a fundamental part of the series, and I am absolutely bamboozled every time someone unironically insists you can skip it and still enjoy the rest of the series for what it is. i just,,,, that’s so far beyond the entire fucking point i cant :’) I’m also bamboozled by how many fans of the series hate on it, and express how gross or uncomfy they find it (though there is nothing wrong with being squicked by some of the graphic scenes, i’m not telling u how to live ur life), and how they wish it was ‘softer’ like v3. Clearly we interpreted the series very differently. 

Capri volume 1, exactly as it is, is literally and absolutely essential to the overall story, as much as the other books absolutely. You cannot, just,,,,, at all, truly experience the rest of the series if you did not go thru the complicated journey of v1 with the characters. You miss so much? I don’t understand how you could possibly appreciate Damen and Laurent’s relationship if you don’t read it just,,,, how? 

V1 shouldn’t be viewed as something you have to ‘get through’ in order to enjoy the ‘real’ captive prince story– it IS captive prince, the real captive prince, the beginning of it, the origins of the story and the starting point of the adventure. It is a brilliant book, it is more extreme than the other two, admittedly, but it needed to be that way. It’s convoluted and intense and fucked up and there’s so much you don’t know and don’t realise you are missing on ur first go at it, but it aims to invoke extreme emotional responses– especially in scenes like Damen’s punishment and the rape arena, and it succeeds BRILLIANTLY at doing so (if a bit sadistically). The characterisation was fucking impeccable and incredibly intense, Damen was a brilliant if flawed hero from the start who you can’t help but root for, and Laurent is one of the most unique characters i’ve ever had the privilege of reading, and the introduction and journey of his character, though it is only really just starting to pick up serious momentum by the end of the book, is awesome and engrossing and so complex you won’t even believe how much you missed when you get to your second reading. I’ve never read a character quite like Laurent, and it’s for that reason i will always, always love v1 for giving me that. 

Plot wise and narratively, v1 does stick out a bit from the other two books, but unlike most others apparently, i don’t wish v1 was more like v3, i wish it was the other way around. After everything we went thru with these boys up until that point, v3 ended too neat and too soft and too simple. it started out brilliantly, it gained momentum for at a good portion of the story, but then it just,,,,, idk. I think the first time i read it i was too duped by the lovely ending and the sweetness of the growing romance to sit back and evaluate it critically, but once the rose coloured glasses wore off and i had the opportunity to do that, and talk with people who had their own critical opinions and interpretations, it’s immediately obvious that for me it just,,,, felt a tiny bit off. Too neat, too easy, the pay off too quick given all we’d experienced before it. I almost wish Pacat had wanted to make 4 books instead of three, to exacerbate parts of the narrative and give us more depth to the journey of the story, to take more time to explore all the themes and side plots that cropped up and contributed to the larger narrative, to take more time with the complications that were too quickly resolved, the weird plot points that were never given enough attention and were resolved far too easily and quickly to be satisfying, ESPECIALLY the complicated relationship of Lamen, ESPECIALLY now that we had explicit confirmation that he knows who Damen is, and that he always did. Maybe i’m just a slut for angst, but it feels too easy in retrospect. There was SO MUCH MORE there to explore i think, so much of Laurent’s character, as established earlier in the series, that we didn’t get the pay-off on just because there was more story to get to and it was more important for pacat to resolve the tension and give us romance than to draw it out. 

Romance aside though, narratively, given the scale of what’s happening in the story, v3 had a much bigger job to do, not only on a personal level for the characters but also from what they had to accomplish, and because of that i think it didn’t quite meet the mark. For all the build up of this adventure, it fizzled out too quickly. The trial scene was engrossing on a first read, but almost painfully obviously there just to tie it all up quickly on the second. All this build up, all the complications, this massive journey that has spanned 3 books and 8 ish years, all neatly resolved in a couple of minutes/pages just like that (tho maybe i’m just too much of a slut for fantasy wars and battles and campaigns, or maybe my expectations were too high). For me, it lacked the impact of book 1, the complexity of book 2, and the characterisation lived up to neither of them. DON’T GET ME WRONG, I love kings rising, it was a lovely send off and it was good enough for what it was. But it could have been more. It didn’t affect me in the same way v1 did, and that’s why i wish it had maintained its own intensity in the way v1 excelled at, and gone further with it. I wanted it to fuck me up hard, but….. it never quite did. 

I think ultimately the difference comes down to v1 being clearly written more for a slave kink kind of community, the scale of it being more contained and having a clearer and more obvious purpose, and the further pacat wrote the more complicated the story became, and obviously the narrative and development of characters began to take precedent over the kink, so maybe that’s why it just feels so completely different. Still, I wish she had taken the parts of it that worked in v1, particularly the engrossing and fucked up conflict between laurent and damen, and kept up that high stakes tension until the very end. She got close, the beginning of book 3 was brilliant for that. It just resolved itself too quickly.

ANYWAY i don’t know why i started rambling, somehow a question about me liking book 1 turned into an analysis of book 3, but thanks for your question anon, and i hope i’ve managed to answer it :’)
