i have two pitches for kgtac. here they are:

if you ever find yourself missing homestuck in the old days before postcanon, or even just the old days of homestuck fandom, you should read karkat goes to a convention immediately.

this is the most homestuck thing i have read since homestuck.

act 1 of kgtac is completed, and is the main draw here. act 2 is currently ongoing and is pretty much completely unrelated to act 1. i think it's alright. but act 1 is absolutely a must-read.

Detective Pony by sonnetstuck (dirk)

do i even need to explain this one? it's detective pony. it's a great character study of dirk. i'm sure you've all heard of it. if you haven't read it, go do that now. please.

Jade Route by SPICYYETI (jade)

jade route is a post-epilogues comic following meat!jade who is trapped in a body controlled by calliope. it's a take on the "ending" that the epilogues don't offer. i think it's pretty clever - it does a great job of using the medium. also, it's about jade :) may or may not have had an impact of some size on how i personally read jade.

ok, this series only contains one fic (for now). it's called "the calm is terrifying when the storm is all you've known." ok i literally could not put this fic down. it has the best hook i've ever seen. a proper fucking novel. and some of the best character writing i have EVER seen for the whole strilonde family. augh it's so good. and the art is really good too (YES IT'S ILLUSTRATED).

inception au. some of the coolest action and plot stuff with an ensemble cast i've ever read followed by the best davekat fic i've ever read. really cool stuff.

another series. it's a d&d-like au. very tongue in cheek about this fact at times. the real draw here is the third fic in the series, Vanitas Vanitatum, which has stellar dirk and john writing. you could read it on its own, but the first two fics are also QUITE good, are about jadekat, and the second one sets up vanitas beautifully, so... you should read all three??? :3c

hsmtw is a readthrough/analysis podcast whose goal is not to analyze homestuck on its own terms, but to challenge it and put it back into its historical context. it's not the easiest to listen to as a homestuck fan - the hosts are very critical at times, and i don't always agree with their opinions on things that happen in homestuck - but i think the analysis about what homestuck does, tries to do, and is responding to is very important, especially for people who weren't there for homestuck's original run. which... includes me! i read homestuck in 2014. i missed most of the most important homestuck historical moments. in any case, hsmtw changed the way i look at homestuck and other media. highly recommend, at the very least for understanding homestuck's historical context

all the aspects have specific smaller abilities that don't entirely aid in the adventure. they're more like side effects if anything.

for example!!! heart players can sense the heartbeats of everything around them, and if they're close enough with someone, the heart player's heartbeat will automatically sync with the other person. i erm. use this for dirkjohn content. smiles nervously

speaking of. breath players basically don't need to breathe. they can hold their breaths for like hours if they focus hard enough.

light players gain random, minuscule bits of information at random, and their brains basically become organic sorting systems, organised however the player chooses to organise it.

time players are just acutely aware of the passage of time. not just as in "oh! it's exactly 2:51:47.6 right now" but like. they're actively aware of everything aging around them. ask any time player and they could tell you the exact age, down to the milliseconds, of literally anything, living or otherwise.

space players are kind of similar but only with physical objects. they are acutely aware of movement in a physical space (no pun intended) and could track the path of a single breath because of the movement in the air around them

mind players can't exactly read minds, but they can definitely tell when the gears are turning. sort of a similar concept to heart players, but with brain waves. they can sense the electrical signals of someone's brain. i'd say with enough time, they could probably match certain signals to certain things that happen in someone's brain, but they can never be too sure what exactly is going on

rage players are just acutely aware of other peoples' emotions. like not to sound cringe but they're basically empaths. they can sense and occasionally feel the emotions of other people. mostly against their will lol

i don't have headcanons like these for the rest of the aspects. perhaps if i sit and stare at the wall for long enough i will. i also have some headcanons regarding god tier tattoos but that's a rant for another time ;P i have requests to draw lolz

Another scene from the childhood friends dirkjohn AU I’ve been messing around with. Takes place after this and before this. 

John pierces Dirk’s ears.

John is already in his pajamas when he hears the rhythmic tapping on his window. He lets out a short yelp before remembering that Dirk had already told him he was on his way.

“Aren’t you grounded?” John pushes the window open and yawns. 

Dirk shushes him and uses John’s shoulders as leverage as he goes through the familiar motions of crawling through the second-story window into John’s bedroom.

“I am grounded, Egbert, so keep it down unless you want to rat me out.” 

John rolls his eyes but braces himself for Dirk’s weight as he finally finds his footing. Dirk lands gracefully and quietly. 

His Dad and sister are already asleep, he thinks but even if they weren’t, Dirk always moves so quietly John doesn’t think they would even be able to notice. 

“You still down to help?” Dirk asks as he closes the window behind him before making himself comfortable on John’s bed. 

John turns on the classical music station the old radio is stuck on and hopes that it adds a quiet buffer to their voices. 

“Help with what? You should be helping me with my geometry homework. I think I might actually fail next week’s test.”

Dirk waves him off, “I’ll help with that later, or better yet, you should come to tutoring with the guys from the engineering club.” He digs through his backpack. 

An uncomfortable tightness spreads over John’s chest. A feeling he’s becoming a little more familiar with. 

John frowns and joins Dirk on the bed, their sides pressed against each other until Dirk freezes for a moment and scoots away, and ends up dangerously close to the edge of the bed. 

“Why can’t we just do one-on-one?” 

Dirk stops rummaging for his supplies and looks at John through the reflection on the dressing mirror hanging on the wall. Dirk watches John’s expression sour as he stares at his empty hands like he sees something Dirk can’t.

They look like an unlikely pair, with John dressed in mismatched socks, an oversized t-shirt, and his hair already sticking up in all sorts of directions like he was already sleeping; while Dirk looks like he is ready to head out to a rave with his meticulous hair and carefully planned black outfit.

“Do you not like the guys from the club?” Dirk asks. It’s a question he’s been meaning to ask for a while. As much as Dirk craves spending time alone with John, he’s doing his best to avoid the awkwardness that has seeped into their relationship. But he worries that their interests are just a little too different. 

They just don’t seem to click the same way ever since Dirk came out.

John’s frown deepens, “No, they’re fine,” he swallows. He’s not sure how to tell Dirk that the reason he doesn’t like hanging out with the engineering club because he feels left out whenever he’s with them. John loves to see his friend in his element, it means that Dirk shines brighter, drawing everyone in. But John always gets stuck watching on the sidelines as Dirk’s friends monopolize his attention. And it makes John, by his own private admission, irrationally jealous. 

He doesn’t like the way that makes him feel.

“Then why not? I think there are a few dudes who are better at explaining math, compared to me.” Dirk hands John a small pink plastic tray with a cheery depiction of a happy sun and clouds.

“I just can’t focus the same way,” John says with enough definitiveness that Dirk simply nods. 

“For sure, okay.” He drops a couple of sandwich bags on the tray. When they make a dull clacking sound John stares down at the contents. 

Dirk smirks, “You ready to pierce my ears?”

John’s jaw and stomach drop in tandem. “What?” He squawks. “Are you nuts?”

“C’mon, Egbert,” Dirk doesn’t beg but his voice is dripping with nervous adrenaline in a way John hasn’t heard in a while. 

It’s contagious.

“I can’t ask anyone else. I wouldn’t trust Rose or Roxy to not fuck up my earlobes.”

And that eases the tension in John’s chest. 

“Why can’t you go to a parlor or something? Tell Roxy to take you to Claire's.” John is already moving to face Dirk, inspecting his earlobes from afar.

More of the tension dissipates when a single choked laugh escapes Dirk. 

“They require parental consent and we both know my dad would never agree.”

“He’s gonna kill you when he sees your ears tomorrow. And if he finds out  I helped he will never let me see you again,” John sighs knowing full well that wouldn’t stop him from seeing Dirk. He begins inspecting Dirk’s tools. 

“He won’t find out,” Dirk’s voice drops to a low whisper, “It’ll just be a secret between us bros. Right?” 

Dirk means to sound teasing, recalling the way they used to share secrets and promises as kids, but instead, he flinches when he catches John looking away, his ears bright red. The sight triggers the plume of something hot that rises from his gut whenever he’s reminded of how bad he’s crushing on John and how much it probably inconveniences his friend.

John is not embarrassed. 

Or he is but not for the reasons Dirk suspects. 

There’s something in Dirk’s tone that forces some of John’s suppressed dream memories to resurface and John knows he needs to collect himself before he tries to make eye contact again. 

“So,” Dirk clears his throat, “Go wash your hands? I’ll look up some youtube videos?” he says quietly.

Grateful for the excuse, John jumps out of the bed wordlessly and scrambles out the door. 

John returns a few minutes later with clean hands and a wet face. 

Dirk smirks, “I said wash your hands not take a shower.” 

John shrugs, “Hey, you have a ten-step face routine, I wash my face with soap and call it good.”

John sticks his tongue out when Dirk grimaces, “We will fix that later,” Dirk mutters and pats the empty spot on the bed. 

Carefully, John climbs back in the bed and takes in the faintest scent of menthol and nicotine that comes off Dirk when he leans closer to show him the video on his phone. It’s probably the reason why he’s grounded in the first place. A small act of rebellion toward his strict parents.

Both boys shift uncomfortably and do their best to focus on the instructions on the video and not on each other’s proximity. 

They have to watch the video multiple times and after the sixth time, John tells Dirk he thinks he’s ready. 

He puts on the latex gloves Dirk brought with him and preps the tools on the plastic tray that Dirk holds over his lap. He’s shaking as he straddles (hovering, neither could handle it if John just took a seat on Dirk’s thigh) and starts massaging Dirk’s earlobe the way the woman on the video instructed.

Dirk’s breathing is staggered and John wonders if Dirk is more nervous than he originally let on.

“I-Icepack?” Dirk chokes out. 

“R-right,” John breathes out and reaches for it. He holds it to Dirk’s ear and quietly counts to 30 and then reaches for the safety pin. 

Dirk’s head is spinning unable to focus on a single thing and instead finds himself on sensory overload. John’s the closest he’s ever been to Dirk since they used to wrestle in elementary school, and Dirk desperately pleads to whatever benevolent power might have mercy on his hormonal teenage ass that they keep his body in check.

He’s also acutely aware that the icepack wasn’t very cold and that piercing his ear is probably going to hurt a lot.

“Okay, ready?” John’s voice shakes.

“Just do it, man, do it. Fucking stab me. Pop my goddamn ear cherry. Do it, dude.” Dirk’s voice also shakes.

John takes a sharp breath in and pushes. 

Dirk hisses and curses. He reaches for a fist full of John’s shirt. It might have made John self-conscious of their position if he wasn’t also shivering with adrenaline. 

He follows the next steps of the video and makes a move to get off Dirk. 

“Wait, what about the other one?” 

John groans, “Bro, no. I can’t. My legs are freakin’ jelly. That was terrifying!”

Dirk tightens his grip on the shirt, “John, you can’t leave me with one pierced ear.”

John chews on his lip. “Fine,” He groans again, “But don’t you ever forget I’m your best friend.”

He doesn’t mean for it to sound so bitter but the words roll out of John’s mouth with enough edge to make Dirk look at him with a puzzled expression. 

John a lot less gentle and Dirk, knowing what’s coming, can’t hold back a garbled sob. 

Glad that the worst is finally done, John gently wipes away a runaway tear from Dirk’s face and softly shushes him. 

“And now we wait,” He carefully moves off Dirk. 

Dirk nods and balls his to keep from reaching up to touch his pulsing ears. 

There’s the loud artificial sound of a phone shutter. 

“Sorry,” John mumbles. “I wanted a picture to commemorate the occasion,” he says with a sheepish smile. 

What Dirk means to sound like an annoyed huff comes out as a stumbling suspire. 

“C’mere, let’s take a selfie.”

John beams, his nerves finally calming and a deep sense of peace washing over him. The bed is loud as he crawls back over and lets Dirk put an arm over his shoulders to pull him in carefully. 

Dirk takes the picture and frowns down at the exhausted faces on screen. 

They take another one once Dirk has the studs in. 

That one becomes John’s home screen.

I’ve been thinking about dirkjohn a lot recently, so I conjured a wall of scattered thoughts because I have a terrible need to share them.

I love how versatile they are when it comes to the way you can portray them. I enjoy tenderness and fluff a lot, but I equally like darker scenarios and personal drama (which should be obvious because I enjoyed Homestuck at all lmao).

The general idea for me personally boils down to ‘huge bitch and nice guy’ where Dirk and John are both because they have multiple sides to them. Keep in mind that everything below doesn’t include post Credits content, I’m aware of it, but I prefer to have a clean slate.

John is genuinely caring and empathetic, but he can be insensitive and mean at times, and I feel like flaws make him more alive and give him a relatable human qualities while simultaneously making him contradict his character traits. I think his character is flexible enough for a huge amount of interpretations to be reasonable, regardless of what I personally do and don’t like. My image of John is that of a person who tends to escape and disregard their worst moments and emotions instead of truly getting over them until they explode, and it’s proven to be the case with his violent outbursts. Things make him mad and he isn’t a saint all-forgiving guy because that’s how people work, and I don’t believe his being supportive but also telling people to fuck off contradict each other. John isn’t faking being nice and loving his friends and family, but he also refuses to acknowledge his own issues and can be a brick wall sometimes. You can explain John’s multiple sides in his love for pranks: they are jokes, but their entire purpose is to cause someone distress for someone else’s enjoyment, and it’s up to individual to decide if they like it or not.

Dirk on the other hand comes off as an arrogant and self-centered even without his multiple questionable selves, but he also has a lot of love to give and keeps getting hurt and disappointed because of it. On the surface he seems to be the opposite of John, when in actuality they both struggle to be completely genuine and vulnerable because they know they’ll get hurt if they do (it’s also growing up in a ‘normal society’ for John, you can imagine the consequences.)

When it comes to their potential interactions (which sadly never happened), I can see them teasing and making fun of each other mercilessly, but they also can eventually lower their walls a bit if they realise that it’s okay to trust someone and be vulnerable with them. I think that’s why the most common scenario in dirkjohn fiction is Dirk seeing John at his lowest without judging him because on some levels he’s the same: they can’t judge each other without reflecting and throwing their own personal issues at themselves at the same time, if that makes any sense. They also have no actual expectations of each other because they lack a personal connection other than ‘friend’s relative’, which doesn’t mean shit. John has his friends’ expectations placed on him, and Dirk’s literally the only person out of the whole human group that doesn’t have some sort of image of John, other than his alternate universe self and vague things Dave told. Dirk had expectations for his friends and that backfired horribly, but he has the most vague idea of who John Egbert is, and I feel like he learned or at least has the potential to learn to keep his expectations in check.

Basically dirkjohn is full of possibilities because of how unexplored it is in any official material. They can be anything you want them to be, and you get a special kind of creative freedom if you have barely anything to work with. John likes Dave’s comics and is totally comfortable with Rose’s interests, he just vibes with Strilondes a lot when it comes to their sense of humour and on-brand posturing; Dirk’s really familiar with the extreme versions of stubborn deflecting and bad taste and he’s completely okay with is, but he also uses Cage memes to fuck with people because he’s ironically a haha funny guy in his own special way. I think they should be friends.

I started shipping DirkJohn all the way back in the gigapause. I'm talking 2014/15. I just remember being excited about them finally meeting in that scene after Game Over? So yeah. Long time ago.

Back then the ship was pretty simple, John was the closested gay guy, Dirk was openly gay, John was a nerd who was very genuine and easygoing, Dirk was a nerd who was emotionally guarded and stunted. The opportunity for them to play off each other was right there. There were those that wanted something a bit different from DaveJohn and DirkJake - it has elements from both that people appreciate, but the opportunity for a new relationship to form, for both of them to change and come to accept themselves a bit more. That's certainly what it was for me, I wanted to see both of them come out of thier shells. I wanted John to embrace his sexuality and Dirk embrace his emotions and identity issues. You don't need a romance or sexual relationship to do those things ofc but it felt like a new connection between two characters who have essentially already been set up to get along? was a healthy and exciting thing to explore. And then the comic ended and we had the freedom to explore it. We had an open invitation to write our own continuations, to explore how they became adults and developed as people. Dirkjake was over, Dave was with Karkat, all of John's female romances were like "bye we have girlfriends now" (because seriously, John was straight-baited AF) so that collection of people who were invested in Dirk and John being Happy and Gay were like... Let's make it happen. And a lot of interesting things came from it, the fact that this ship has carried on and created more and more great content over the years is amazing!

This isn't much of a list of reasons why I like them but kind of explaining the progression from crackship to OTP. It started off simple and then became, goddamn it works. And I'm still here 6 years later, oop

"vrisrose is girl dirkjohn" - keegan swamp wizard

you know there’s a lot of layers to the accuracy of this statement because originally i was going to respond with a joke about keegan swamp wizard’s objectively good meta but vrisrose is clearly an analog to dirkjohn in both its dynamic and its metatextual role.

first off, the parallels between vriska and dirk have already been clearly laid out, and are further evidenced by their twin roles as the two characters the fandom is most willing to argue over. their poor choices, while mostly indefensible, are rooted in an antihero complex and a willingness to self-condemnation that they battle by vigorously over-justifying their actions, usually with machiavellian ethics. they are also both gay, and their gayness plays a crucial function in their respective narratives.

rose and john present a more interesting parallel, as on face, they’re drastically different characters, but their comparison rests more on the role they play in their respective ships. vriska and dirk are both dumbasses and make dumbass decisions; rose and john, on the other hand, are both very smart people who are very good at making other people look like dumbasses. now one might be tempted to say that rose would dislike vriska’s dumbassery, but on the contrary, she would enjoy the wealth of opportunities to antagonize someone she loves dearly, because that’s rose’s chief method of displaying affection. i would go so far as to say dirk needs someone like john antagonizing him, because a) john’s directness counters dirk’s difficulty with clear communication, which is one of the things that ended his previous relationship, and b) it checks his tendency for egotism. 

the significance of each relationship to its participants also cannot be understated. for three of four (in a theoretical post-canon universe, assuming that neither pairing exists in an alternate timeline or canon-insert) people, this would be their second relationship. first relationships, as evidenced by dirk/jake’s difficulties, are rarely smooth sailing. a second relationship is generally more comfortable, and marked by a more realistic view of romance. although i enjoy both rose/mary and dirk/jake, both their canonical portrayal and fan content for each demonstrates a decidedly idealistic view of romance. vrisrose does not and fundamentally cannot entertain that notion, because neither vriska nor rose is adept at romance. dirkjohn, being between two people whose understanding of romance is singularly bizarre (dirk’s misguided wooing of jake, john’s understanding of romance gleaned via bad movies), illustrates a more imperfect dynamic, but one nonetheless founded on a bond between two similar people and predicated on their enjoyment of each other’s company.

it also takes into account the role of overcoming socially ingrained homophobia in both vriska and john’s arcs. vriska’s relationship with terezi ends in a nebulous area which, although the most rich and interesting of fan interpretations would call love, is not textually a romantic relationship as we understand it. john, after Act 7, is alone -- and @swamp-wizard has written about this before, but suffice it to say that his isolation from the gay love propagated by his friends, as well as his vehement (overcompensatory) rejection of the possibility of his own homosexuality, makes a decent case for internalized homophobia. rose and dirk, on the other hand, are indubitably gay, have known their gayness since a young age, and have not struggled with the realization of their sexual orientation. both offer a counterpart to the coming-out narrative of their partner. i could go on.

but metatextually, too, they’re very similar. dirkjohn comes under fire for breaking up the revered dirk/jake, which is one of the most popular pairings in the fandom by far, and vrisrose breaks up rose/mary. although the reaction to vrisrose hasn’t been nearly as vehement as the one to dirkjohn -- primarily because fan investment is nowhere near the same levels for rose/mary as it is for dirk/jake -- the implication is the same. both ships have content mostly produced by one sect, and shared amongst that sect, but are growing in popularity as a consequence of the Homestuck Drought brought on post-A7. although it’s unlikely for either to reach the popularity levels of any canonically supported or confirmed ship, their steady growth demonstrates a nice trend in post-ending homestuck thought: a newfound creativity, and a willingness to experiment with the characters, whose stories are now entirely in our hands.

My favorite 0T3 (though, I have a lot of poly ships I love) is generally JohnDaveKat (ever since I started to love Davekat, and Johnkat was a big ship of mine when I was new to Homestuck). For a quick non-homestuck aside, Gladion/protagonist for Pokémon sun and moon is amazing, and if ANYONE who is familiar with Fossil Fighters follows me, Rupert/protagonist. If y'all know this one hmu because I literally don't know anyone who does. For those who don't know what fossil fighters is, it's Pokémon but dinosaurs and sincerely underrated.

N: Three things I wish more people in my fandom(s) did.

Homestuck strikes again! Frankly I wish more Homestuck people would like, write their thoughts out. Tell me about those headcanons. Hit me with the crackships, the analysis, the essays. For everyone who does this I love you platonically. More seriously, I wish people would chill out a little - I don't mean about like, being wild about ideas or enthusiastic or "cringey", I love all of that - I mean, about headcanons and interpretations and opinions. Like June and John or fem or enby or masc Roxy or liking post canon vs not (for anyone wondering, I have...really mixed opinions on post canon). People really need to cool their jets sometimes. But on a lighter note, the third thing (that frankly applies to every fandom) - poly ships. Y'all are sleeping on poly ships. I mean this in the nicest way possible, but I really think people are missing out here.

R: Something I ship that I don't think anyone else ships.

Hooo boy do I have some ships for you. Starting with the big 0T3 that I sincerely think like ONE other person likes and there is absolutely no fic for on A03: John/Dirk/Karkat. Dirk/Karkat in general is ignored as hell but the combination of those three? Nothing. Nada. Zip. There is no content. I also have a big poly pile that I know nobody else is on (all non-incest combinations of John/Dave/Jake/Dirk/Karkat/sometimes Hal at once) but that's specific enough that I'm not surprised nobody's run with it. In any case, I have a good number of drafts for both in the works.

T: Hard and fast headcanons I'll die for.

This one's actually kind of difficult because so many of my headcanons are flexible and subject to change between AUs. Even my gender/sexuality headcanons are very flexible and it generally depends on what I think fits the character as they are in a specific AU (for instance, I usually headcanon Dave as bi, but in my fic Still as a Statue he is in fact gay). But, there are some I really love:

- Dave and Karkat know some ASL, which they learned from the Mayor. They use this to talk sometimes just because they can. Dave taught Dirk, who uses it's reliance on body language/facial expressions to try and get the hang of actually emoting in conversation. This is mostly because I'm learning ASL right now and project like a motherfucker on the Striders.

- MLP is a show Dirk watched when he was little, and it's sort of a comfort thing for him, so when he's down he'll watch an episode or two to cheer up despite claiming not to like the show overall. He got Roxy into it when they first met, but she didn't really hold on to it the way he did. Also, he probably started liking it because of the robot Minihoof, who I headcanon was in fact left to him by Alpha Dave.

- John loves oldies and classical music. His dad used to play oldies and classical all the time and he loved the music but didn't really admit that. He can absolutely play a few on the piano, and he has a good singing voice but isn't really into singing.

- Aranea has a fucking amazing singing voice and absolutely nobody knows. Like, she could be the singing star in a rock band and absolutely fucking nobody is aware of this. Vriska also has a great voice, but cannot sing on key to save her life- she is a great electric guitar player though.

- The beta kids all game together. They complain about each other's picks, but they stream to each other and voice chat while they play (and meet up to play if applicable) and do pvp and multiplayer and google tips for each other and all. They're just friends who game.

Y: My secondhand fandoms that people I know are in.

- Minecraft in general, but also dream smp.

- Unnus Annus.

- The Magnus Archives.

- Genshin Impact.

- Hades.

- There's one more but for the life of me I cannot remember.
