SHE & HER  / have you ever heard of I WANNA GET BETTER  by bleachers, well, it describes ARDEN GRAHAM to a tee! the twenty six  year old, and MECHANIC @ PIT STOP was spotted browsing through the stalls at portobello road market last sunday, do you know them? would you say SHE is more reticent or more WARM-HEARTED instead? anyway, they remind me of, well worn vans trainers, hands stained with car grease, flannel shirts around your waist, fake smiles that hide a lot. maybe you’ll bump into them soon!

BASIC INTRO:

born and raised a london girly, arden is an only child. her parents divorced when she was young, she was primarily raised by her dad.

of course, she had a good relationship with her mother, but she's always been a daddy's girl.

growing up, arden was a tomboy, always getting into scrapes, and troubles, helping her dad fix things.

her fascination with cars started when her dad bought an old car, they worked together to do it up.

as a teenager, she hung out at her dad's work a lot, he's the owner of a contracting company.

she was friendly with all of the workers, but one day she laid her eyes on a young man called micah (@soliloquivm) , the rest was history.

eventually, the pair got together, they spent all their time together and her dad noticed this, he wasn't happy.

then one thing lead to another & arden became pregnant, it wasn't something she was excepting. but they decided to keep the baby, which didn't help things with her dad.

her dad made things very difficult for micah, much to arden's dismay, so the young man had to move to another job.

adalyn was born and for the first week's everything was "fine", arden was lying. she wasn't feeling that "new born spark" , it was awkward.

she struggled to connect with little adalyn, instead of being happy about becoming a mother, she was stressed, worried, tired and things just seemed off.

arden watched other mums and their babies, having a great time together, then she looked at herself & adalyn, it didn't seem the same. it felt like the young girl didn't like her, it seemed just like her mother, she was a daddy's girl, which made things worse.

it wasn't an easy decision for arden to leave, she debated it for a long time, but she needed to escape and start afresh.

she left everyone she loved a note, packed up what little things she had and moved to the USA.

arden got a pokey apartment in new york city and trained to become a mechanic full-time.

she also went to therapy and worked through her issues, a professional diagnosed her with postpartum depression

but she missed micah, a lot, she missed her loved ones back in the UK, so after a few years, she moved back.

now arden is twenty six, she's been back in notting hill for only a few weeks, she's currently living with her dad.

she still very much has feelings for micah!! they never went away!! she adores him!!

she works at the local garage as a mechanic, she still loves fixing cars, arden doesn't care that she's one of the only women in the garage. she will fight u if u say anything weird about that!!

arden is v nervous about being a mum again, that's quite a scary topic, she's not faced yet!!

What I Read in December

Exit Strategy by Martha Wells - 3.50/5.00 As much as I like Murderbot, I think it's wearing a little thin for me. The stories and characters don't do enough to differentiate themselves from previous entries. I keep finding myself wanting more substance from these stories, even though they're so tight and streamlined that I don't know where it would be added without feeling like padding. Even though this book brings this arc to a satisfying conclusion, I still think it wouldn't feel out of place to make Rogue Protocol and this book into one longer novel. I still like the characters, but they are starting to run together. That being said, this book is very well written. I just want more.

Red White and Royal Blue - 3.00/5.00 When all it's trying to be is a cute, kind of goofy romcom, it works very well. However, when it tries to have something more to say, it doesn't quite have the substance to support it.

If you go into this looking for an accurate representation of international politics, you're not going to find it, but if you want a fun romp, check it out. It is sometimes very cringy, and if I thought about it too much, I got pedantic and nitpicky.

While Alex and Henry make for a fun enemies to lovers couple, I wish the frenemies part had kept up for a little while longer, but that's totally down to my own personal preference for a good slow burn.

It's sometimes a bit jarring to switch between characters talking about American history, which has proceeded largely unchanged until 2016, and British, which diverged much earlier. In one conversation the characters will be talking about Ariana Grande, then in another they'll talk about a fictional actor playing James Bond. There's nothing inherently wrong with this, and I understand why the author did this, but I personally find something very jarring about it.

Chaos Vector by Megan E. O'Keefe - 4.75/5.00 So. I finished this the other night and immediately placed an order with Thrift Books for the third. The Protectorate may be one of my new favorite Sci-fi series. I just had so much fun reading it.

I appreciated that Jules' storyline and the characters from it get incorporated into the greater story very quickly. In Velocity Weapon, Jules' storyline felt very disconnected from the others' until the end, but now that I've read Chaos Vector I understand why. It was interesting seeing how Nox and Arden integrated themselves with the other characters. Sanda still remains one of my favorite characters and I enjoyed seeing her interactions with one of her dads, Graham. Even if Graham eventually has to leave because he knows that if forced to chose between the mission and Sanda, he would chose Sanda without hesitation. I missed Bero more than I thought I would and I was beaming when he came back.

I wasn't entirely sold on Sanda and Tomas' relationship in the first book, but the parts where they're interacting while he's undercover and she doesn't know who he is did it for me. Loved that for them.

The book is very fast paced and fun. However, the constant fast pace gets very one note after a few hundred pages and there are some sequences, i.e. the battle on Monte, that would have hit harder if it slowed down a bit beforehand. That being said, the book is already ~550 pages long and I'm not sure what I would cut to make room for a slower section.

By the end, I'd figured out one of the big twists, and was so excited to see it play out. I did not see the second one coming. I went into Sanda's encounter with Ranier expecting one outcome. Then I got hit with one last goddamn LSM launch on this roller coaster and went completely goddamn feral. I can't wait to read the next one.

She spun her friend around, too, laughing each time. When the song ended, Arden held both hands up for and high fived him with a laugh. “You have no idea how much I missed you, Graham.”

To be honest, I haven’t had time to chill out with a book since this all began for us in the North Country about three weeks ago. In the time before, I was dipping in and out of two books on Leonardo da Vinci (both available on Kindle):

I pre-ordered the final volume of Hilary Mantel’s Thomas Cromwell trilogy, The Mirror & the Light, but have yet to crack it open.

Edward Dolnik, The Forger’s Spell. This is the story of the Han Van Meegeren, the Dutch forger, who sold Nazi collectors his fake Vermeers. Even after the war, collectors were misled, as was Mrs. Hyde. But if you can’t have an authentic Vermeer, it’s alright to have an authentic Van Meegeren fake!

Lloyd Goodrich, Albert P. Ryder.  Goodrich’s book is a little old, published in 1959. There are more recent studies available including by the head of the department when I was a student at the University. Of Delaware, William I. Homer. But, if you’re interested in knowing more about the artist in the southeast guest bedroom, you can’t go wrong with reading Goodrich.

James Grundig, Breaking Van Gogh. This is the story of Van Gogh’s time in the Saint-Rémy sanitarium, which he entered a year after executing the drawing in our collection, Orchard with Arles in the Background.

Andrew Graham-Dixon, Michaelangelo and the Sistine Ceiling. The author is a clear and concise writer who is extremely good at distilling modern scholarship into a highly readable and enjoyable book. He also wrote an excellent book on Caravaggio: Caravaggio: A Life Sacred and Profane (available on Kindle).

Sargent’s Portrait Drawings.  I saw an exhibition of these graphic portrait drawings at The Morgan Library fairly recently. They are stunning. It is amazing how much presence he can capture and bestow on his sitters working just in pencil. They are no less commanding than his gorgeous painted portraits.

“Sorry, D. I got caught up at the shop, so I couldn’t get to the dispo before it closed, and all I’ve got on me is that stuff you said makes you wanna vomit--” Graham had already removed the joint from behind his ear, free hand patting the pockets of his jeans for the lighter he swore he’d stashed there on his last cigarette break. There was little need for ceremony when it came to these dinners with his sister: “dinner” being a fairly loose term, since food was mostly an afterthought, a side effect of whatever it was they divulged in that night. More often than not, it was just the two on her couch, joint passing easily back and forth between fingers, mindless television on in the background. A comfortable silence Graham couldn’t share with anybody else, the kind of bond only strengthened by blood.

So, when he crossed the threshold of the trailer, he was not prepared for the sight of Arden at the set kitchen table, Drew across from him, with an empty place setting in between them. A proper family dinner, like they were the fucking Brady Bunch or something. Or The Brady Bunch, if they were missing a sibling and their parents were dead. Graham stopped in his tracks, looking between Arden, the empty place setting, Drew, the door he’d just walked through...contemplating his options, what consequences he’d rather deal with.

oh wOW alright so i’m gonna be basic for a second and tell y’all that i fucking love angst. i mean, fluff’s great and all, but my heart truly lies with the gritty, toxic, dysfunctional, and fucked up. i’m also a huge fan of anything having to do with crime so if you ever wanna do any crime plots come my way !!!  it’s also no secret that i’m a very big fan of age gaps ( obvs not with minors because GROSS ). but seriously, give me everything. friends or exes or enemies to lovers, two toxic people that know they should walk away from each other but can’t live without the other, criminals on the run, any kind of criminal or bad influence with pure characters that have hearts made of gold, characters that go through something horrible together and become each other’s lifeline because they’re the only ones that understand, secret and / or taboo relationships, slowburn and unrequited love, exes that reconnect under literally any kind of circumstances, etc. i’ll link some good examples of my favorite plots so you can get a feel for what i’m describing !!!

i’m also always down for plots away from the romantic side of things. i LOVE giving my characters ride or dies, enemies, exes, family, or anything else you can think of. the more unique the connection the better !! legit one of the best relationships i ever played out in an rp was between carcosa and another girl. totally platonic, but it was such a rich and fucked up dynamic that was full of toxicity and power struggles and manipulation and backstabbing, but also drunken benders and risky adventures and late night confessions, and those were easily some of the funnest threads and plotting sessions i’ve ever had. so please, like i said, give me all of the connections.

tbh i hope to get a lot of things out of this group. i’m hoping to find a safe space to let my creativity run wild and a home for my muses where they can constantly grow and develop through interactions with other characters, in-depth plots, and my own exploration the more i write with them. i’m also hoping this will be a good opportunity to make friends, since i’m very much a loner and some of the best people i’ve met have been through the world of roleplaying. i definitely want to push my muses and challenge myself to be a better writer here, and i hope to help out those of you that are seeking the same things in your journey !! i’m already planning on adding some more muses in the very near future ( because i have ZERO impulse control ), and as far as future plans for plots go i want EVERYTHING. romantic, enemies, exes, familial, platonic, and literally anything in between. i would definitely love some slowburn ships where our characters don’t just fall in love overnight. i’d also be so down for exploring the dynamics of age gap relationships. not just the taboo aspect of them but like the differences in generations, the potential repercussions, the ups and downs and the times where they’re not sure if they can make it work.

INTRODUCING…. why i said fuck it.

i mean who hasn’t felt like saying fuck it to the rpc ??? i’ve been rping for several years, about six of those years have been on tumblr and as much love as i can have for this community at times, most days it’s just fucking exhausting. i feel like it’s mostly become a very toxic, judgmental, and honestly shallow place. i hate the expectation groups put on members these days with activity checks and whatnot because honestly who even has the time to write every single day ????? or y’know sometimes we just don’t feel like it ?????? i know for me personally between my mental health and irl responsibilities i just don’t have the time or energy to be on every two days. and plus a lot of them are cliquey af or die in a week or are riddled with petty drama so i tend to avoid them altogether. i joined the indie community in hopes of rping on my terms and while i def feel like that was a step in the right direction, it’s still a very exclusive community at times and i’ve had difficulty fitting in. there’s still a lot of ugliness towards female ocs or muns that exclusively play females and tbh i’m over it ??? i decided to give this group a try because i love the idea of the indie format but in a group, making it easier to plot with people and put yourself out there. tl;dr i decided to say fuck it because the community’s gone downhill and i needed a change.

I am a huge fan of the grand gesture and loved the ending so much. Andi Arndt, Sebastian York, January Lavoy, Julia Whelan, R.C. Bray, Shane East, Joe Arden, Erin Mallon, Dion Graham, Savannah Peachwood, Jason Clarke, and Robin Miles nailed their characters, making us feel all their emotions and bringing them to life so beautifully. This story flowed perfectly, and I never had a hard time knowing which character was speaking, because their voices are all so completely different and distinct. I loved this phenomenal audio and would love to listen to more made this way!
