One of the wonderful things about When They Cry is not only how Ryukishi07 noticably improves as an author and builds upon his themes and ideas from his previous works, but also how each successive work gets more blatantly queer than the last.

Higurashi has quite a bit of plausable deniability on whether its characters are lgbtq. The most obvious ones are Furude Rika and Houjou Satoko for each other, but this can plausibly be denied by someone who doesn't see it without too much of a strech in the original eight episodes. Personally I'd argue that literally the entire main cast of girls are lgbtq of some kind except maybe Hanyuu, but each of those arguments do require interpretation. This is Higurashi from 2002.

Umineko gets more blatant with explicitly queer characters, more often on the magic side but there are some on the human side as well. It's a coinflip on whether Zepar or Furfur is trans (though some clowns will use real life voice actors to try to give a definitive answer). Bernkastel and Lambdadelta are notorious toxic witch lesbians. Furudo Erika and Dlanor are in a less explicit relationship that's a bit dicey at times and coming after Furudo Erika's unpleasant breakup with her boyfriend. Williard seems to be in a relationship with Ushiromiya Lion by the end even as Ushiromiya Lion explicitly states they're unsure of their gender and or don't want to say on the matter and Williard accepts that without hesitation and explicitly states that the audience should too. Ushiromiya Ange has a relationship with Mammon that can be interpreted as romantic as well, and with the open ended ending of her future, one can imagine Ushiromiya Ange as all sorts of sexuality and potentially still in that relationship with Mammon if not closer. And then of course there's Yasuda Sayo or as I'd like to call the queerest and most gender and sexuality character of all time. If I tried to count their potential queer identities, I'd probably miss at least one or two, but they ain't straight and they ain't cis even if their individual personalities might be. There's even more that you could say about the themes of Umineko overall that also tend to involve Yasuda Sayo to some extent, but I'll leave it there. By the latter half of Umineko or the answer arcs, some people reading at the time were wondering basically "Where'd all this gay shit come from?" among other things. Some people couldn't handle it at the time and many still can't, and some are somehow still in denial of Umineko's queerness to this day more than likely. This is Umineko from 2007.

Ciconia even with only one episode out and presumably an eighth of the way done by traditional When They Cry standards manages to be EVEN MORE explicitly queer within said one episode. This time, with no interpretation or any serious level of reading and understanding the text and characters needed, the main protagonists Mitake Miyao and Mitake Meow who share a body are either transgender one way or the other with Mitake Miyao being a boy and Mitake Meow being a girl. To this they're like Yasuda Sayo except they definitely know their sex, and like Ushiromiya Lion they'd rather not say at least yet. Mitake Meow's boyfriend Jayden respects this and that his girlfriend might be trans and that she can tell him and they can work whatever out when she's comfortable about it. There's a whole ass scene or so about this and is impossible to deny. Ciconia also mentions explicitly there being surgery to acquire a penis in the futuristic setting as well, and possibly even artificial wombs if I'm not mistaken too, things that are at the moment still medical hopes and dreams for so many trans people. There's also discussions about the struggles of lgbtq people as well as gay moments mostly among girls but even with a guy as well (not listing them partially because my memory of some of their names is fuzzy, lol). There's a pro yuri nun idol squad even who states that love has no bounds and yuri is the best thing ever essentially, you literally can't get more explicit and in the text than this unless your measure of gayness deems sex to be the epitemy and ideal of gayness at all times. I'm not even sure how you could be a queerphobic When They Cry fan without blatantly ignoring at least one work or malding about it constantly. This is Ciconia from 2019.

This post doesn't say much about Higurashi GouSotsu from 2020 because I haven't watched it myself, but that's pretty explicitly gay too and much more explicit than the original and makes the queer content in the original as well more blunt and obvious. Not necessarily recontexualization so much as a potential fragment that builds upon what was already previously alluded to for nearly two decades by that point.

To people who genuinely think any When They Cry work is definitively and undeniably straight...I really don't know what to tell you lol. Like there's room for intepretation for quite a bit of this including towards a cis or heterosexual explanation at times, but at some point you're just not reading the text very well to think that it's all just cis and straight and that the gays are just delusional somehow, lol.

Some Tincrow Moments From The Wiz Production I Just Saw While It’s Fresh In My Mind

Note: I had never seen the stage version of The Wiz before last night, so I could be missing things and points. Also, my memory might be just a bit fuzzy on exact details, but I know this stuff mention did indeed happen at some point.

Avery Wilson was Scarecrow and Phillip Johnson Richardson was Tinman. They absolutely killed it. Everyone did. I’m going to need a cast album and pro-shot please!

Scarecrow is a dance God once they get him off the poll in time for “You Can’t Win”. Why they kept Michael Jackson on a damn poll in the movie despite the fact that his dance moves would've been really cool for Scarecrow, I’ll never know.

This is the first direct Oz retelling I’ve seen to give Scarecrow a human backstory (Wicked is more of/better off seen as it’s own thing in my opinion). He was once a scientist who got his brain taken by one of the witches and turned into a Scarecrow. I don’t remember if it’s mentioned if he had a family in this show—it might’ve not been—but if he did I guess he would’ve completely forgotten because he “has no brain”. And I might be wrong, but I think it was mentioned he had a name too, but if so I don’t remember it. I find that interesting and fun to play with, especially if one would be able to compare and contrast that with Nick Chopper’s backstory (and/or whatever the Tinman’s name might be in this version of Oz; guy collects names like candy). I would have to see The Wiz again in order to do that myself, but you know, I like the idea.

Tinman’s backstory is slightly different. He was too gay and sassy for his own good, saying one of the witches was a “rusty” singer, causing her to turn him from a lumberjack into a “heartless” Tinman who gradually lost almost all of his memories outside of the mere fact that he once had a family due to this curse. He thinks he doesn’t have a heart because he can’t remember the ones he loved, just that he used to. Nimmie Amee isn’t a part of his story in this show. That’s about as tragic as the backstory Baum gave him, if not worse.

Give me an angst with a happy ending AU where Tinman and Scarecrow knew each other as humans but both forgot due to their curses, only to rediscover each other through their found families. Imagine Scarecrow having Nimmie Amee’s original role in a way—noooo—

Scarecrow mimicking Tinman’s rusty dance moves while they oil him (he mimicked a lot of people throughout the show—Dorothy, the wizard’s announcers calling his name, maybe etc., so I guess it was just his cute little thing).

When Dorothy’s trying to convince the gang to bring Lion along Tinman says “Are you sure? We already have to bring Captain Brainless?” (or something a lot like that, I'm paraphrasing), thinking they had too many already as if his husband wasn't first in line on the journey before him, only for Scarecrow to say, “I’m captain?!?!” *Insert cute happy head waggles* (Hits different when you know Scarecrow becomes the ruler of Oz after the first book till Ozma’s found, but his leadership wasn't mentioned in The Wiz so maybe that's not on purpose) I adore Avery Wilson’s take on Scarecrow. Tinman has always been my favorite of Dorothy’s friends if I had to pick one, but Wilson’s performance really made Scarecrow stand out even more than usual. I don’t know if I can explain it, it might just have to be seen; pray there’s a slime tutorial out there.

Lion’s kinda gay too, but in solo. And I know Ozma’s not here, so there’s not really any evidence for Dorothy’s queerness… but she is—I can feel it in my lesbian soul, okay!?!?

All of Dorothy’s friends not only want their gifts, but don't see the point in their existences without them. It made me sad for them.

I don’t know where to mention it, but Toto’s not in this show at all—poor guy. EDIT: I just learned that in the original production, Toto was played by a white dog as a joke that there was an all-black cast as opposed to him traditionally being a black/brown dog with a white cast. That is hilarious—why didn't they recreate that???

Tincrow’s only straight-feeling moment is with them both being distracted by the poppies (which caught me off guard in this show because traditionally Scarecrow and Tinman are the only ones not affected by the poppies because they’re not flesh and blood like Dorothy, Lion, and Toto; in this Dorothy was the one to break everyone free from them. I’ve been trying to understand the purpose of this change. Maybe to give Dorothy a bit more agency). The poppies were these sensual flower ladies trying to convince the gang to be lazy, which on it’s own is a fun twist on the flowers that put Dorothy and Lion to sleep. But hey, maybe that makes it not straight, just lazy. I'm all for Bi4Bi Tincrow too.

After the Kalidahs attack they comfort and hype each other and Dorothy up (Dorothy’s their sapphic adopted daughter, in this essay, I will—).

I forget when exactly this happens, maybe during the Kalidahs scene, but at one point they casually cling to each other's arms for no(?) reason. They just met and they’re already married.

Scarecrow backup-singing a little before everyone else joins Tinman during “What Would I Do If I Could Feel” (at least at my showing, I don’t know if this is a regular occurrence as a part of the show or just something that happened to happen at mine).

Making fun of the Wicked Witch together, calling her smelly, and having Lion join in. Bros, that’s what got you in trouble to begin with—messing with a dang witch!

Interestingly, the idea of Dorothy’s friends having they’re gifts all along isn’t here. Instead, it’s implied that after they kill the last wicked witch the curse is mostly lifted, with Tincrow’s gifts returning to them, but they stay a scarecrow and tin-man for some reason. I like to think they still had them all along though, that idea’s too cute and sweet for me to let go of.

The last time we see them they leave the stage together, Lion going ahead of them to reunite with his mom. I can’t explain why this feels important to me. I guess because usually characters exit the stage individually as like a goodbye queue to the audience, knowing that that last step off the stage will detemand the last impression of the characters. So the fact that the last impression of both of them is them together feels special. Or maybe it’s just me.

They both had such sassy black queer vibes the whole time. The show itself already has such sass, but both of them, Scarecrow especially, were oozing it in different fonts. They were giving off bear x twink—or maybe otter couple vibes.

Gay or not, The Wiz is so great! I recommend it so much!

Alas, it no longer exists, but for many many years the OKC AIDS foundation held a Halloween fundraiser that was truly the event of the year. Food, drinks, decor, and the Ls Gs Bs and Ts in their very very finest costumes. I saw some truly great works over the years: a drag queen dressed as the entire film of The Wizard of Oz, in a half black and white/half color ensemble complete with a top hat that was Emerald City with the witch on her broomstick actually flying in a circle above it. Every time I passed her in the crowd I said “You’re going to win the big prize” and when she did, she came and found me and hugged me and said “You believed in me!!” I saw a bunch of lesbians dressed as the Partridge Family, and when they’d walk around the room they all held cardboard panels that came together to form the bus, and they’d wave out the windows at us. A woman with dwarfism dressed as JonBenet Ramsey in her cowgirl pageant gear. My best year, I found a set of pink silk slippers and built a 30s movie star peignoir around it— I got so many compliments from the drag gals!

When I was in high school I was known for having a girlfriend and got some shit about it sometimes. One guy used to hassle me a lot, telling me being gay was a sin and I was gross and going to hell. Like a lot of outspoken homophobes, he set off my gaydar and one day when he wouldn’t lay off I told him so. “The only people obsessed with gay people are other gay people.” He was big mad, no surprise. Then one year at the Halloween ball, I was checking my makeup in the bathroom next to this gorgeous drag queen when she suddenly stopped and turned to me. “Mandy!?! Oh god honey, you were so right!”

So you can keep your Pride parades and your music festivals, I’ll even take a pass on an Oscar party if you make sure I never miss Halloween.

Silly bird man who makes soup and studies ancient ruins of long lost civilisations in the desert! He doesn't have a quarrel with anyone and nobody has a quarrel with him. He knows the tunnels under the desert well and knows how to avoid sandworms. He's also a guide for lost travelers trying to make their way through a hopelessly large desert.

Really fucked up little guy. Kinda more fucked up than Maggie if I'm being honest. A real piece of work, it created a nightmarish hell-dimension called Wiz-Mart for fun and watched people actually try to utilize it as a proper grocery store. They find it HIGHLY entertaining to watch

The Glazastov Family

I'd make individual blurbs for this family but none of them are that important aside from Vitaly, but he's also a very minor character in this (I still love him a lot though). The Glazastov Family is a (you guessed it) family of morticians and funeral directors. They are a family of five, consisting of the parents (Konstantin and Olga) and their three children (Vitaly, Sasha, and Polina). Konstantin (he/him) and Olga (she/her) are happily married and getting up there in years, but they tend not to go out much. Not very social at all. Vitaly (he/him) is the most social out of all of them and that's saying a lot. He's not very keen on speaking to others outside of work, but he has a soft spot for kids and does a lot of the talking for his family. Sasha (he/him) is an asshole. He was quickly driven out of the family home for trying to kill his brother. Polina (she/her), or Polly for short, is the youngest and very very sweet. She often plays with the children outside the morgue, and her responsibilities in the family have yet to be passed down, since she's quite young still.

Okay- I did it, I wrote the things down. I'm sure there will be plenty more characters and NPCs to come, I definitely haven't covered all of them, but this is the basic stuff for the moment. God it's exhausting making this long of a post how do y'all do it this took me like three days

Reading This Week 2024 #44

This weekend I was away at my very first LARP! So the reading log is coming a bit late to you since I got back yesterday afternoon and immediately collapsed from exhaustion. While I was away, I got a lot of really excellent recommendations for more books to check out from my fellow cast members. It seems reasonable that the best people to get fantasy and scifi recs from are people who are also dedicating their weekend to being in the woods in November in order to smack each other with foam swords

Finished:

turning corners, tolling bells by rozecrest on ao3 this is a Fourteen Fifteen/Tender Sky yearning fic! I think I really love the micro trope in tenfour fics where they actually kiss fairly early on, but then Fourteen dies (as they do) and that memory gets lost in the transfer, artifically extending the amount of time they spend in the unexpressed feelings zone

Between Heaven and Earth by theorangewitch on ao3 the Partizan/fe3h crossover I needed. Gucci Garantine just fits so well into a fire emblem story. miss transgress oblige would obviously align with a dubious noble revolutionary

"She Commands Me and I Obey" by Ann Leckie this is a short story set in the imperial Radch universe! Breq is a character in it, but notably not the perspective character. I think it's really interesting that if you aren't familiar with the series already and so dont know about ancillaries, Breq (or Ultimately-Justice-Shall-Prevail) just comes across as an extraordinarily athletic and observant person

Wildest things that happened to me in Empires 6 and 7 (with unrelated poor quality pics of mostly Yan Shi/Lady Yan/Merah)

Empires 7: Playing as Yan Shi and was serving Lü Bu in a randomized run. Also married him because of course. The most recent kingdom subjugated was lead by Guo Jia and Lü Bu recruited him after his defeat. So the task was to Lauch a skirmish against another kingdom so that I did after getting better gear. It was a rescue mission and Guo Jia was getting his ass beat so I had to go save him. When I did, he said something about “meeting later this evening… After the battle of course.” Uh yeah um first off, according to the Oc lore made by yours truly, Yan Shi is Guo Jia’s cousin… Not blood related but still! Second, he was hitting on his lord’s wife, on Lü Bu’s wife, the one guy who’s wife you probably shouldn’t hit on. Yeah that little hoe had a deathwish because those are the actions of a man with nothing left to loose.

Empires 6: Playing as Lü Bu with the intent to *checks notes* Take the throne because the Emperor is impotent and Lü Bu is not. *Ig they don’t call it the Sky Piercer for nothing okiokioki im sorreeeeeeyyy.* So ofc I got Yan Shi among my officers and married her because I forgot to do that on my first playthrough and broke the short lived tradition. Anyway, I was chilling and then Diao Chan came in and joined me seeking a great ruer. After a few months an event occurred where Diao Chan declares that she would make the traitors pay and took a bunch of my officers with her. I was perplexed and decided to check the officers I have left and… Yan Shi was missing… She took my wife… DIAO CHAN TOOK MY WIIIFE THAT EVIL WITCH SHE STOLE MY WIFE!!!! I thankfully had a recent save and that event didn’t occur afterwards. And that’s what gave birth to my headcanon of Diao Chan being an evil lesbian icon.

Honourable mention 1: In empires 7 a cutscene would play for your biggest rival kingdom. My sworn enemy kingdom in one playthrough had, at the top, ruler Sun Jian, Bu Lianshi and Arkon the skeleton necromancer in a flesh suit… Story wise I think Arkon used his necromancer powers to resurrect Sun Jian and I think making DnD characters and scattering them around was a mistake.

Honorable mention 2: Playing as Yan Shi and trying to get the Captured Rival and Fair Match events (probably the hardest cutscenes to get) and ended up accidentally rizzing up Xiahou Dun, Sima Yi, Liu Bei and Guan Ping back to back in that order by only going on battles. This happened when I had my wisdom teeth removed btw.

Honorable mention 3: Making Lü Bu into the Strategist simply because it’s funny.

Makes me wonder what awaits me in Empires 8 and 9 for me to expand this list.

Crone gf. her name is rhea upcliffe nee lynderly the witch of snake isle. she becomes the mistress of whispers after maegor kills tyanna and stays in power for decades. she's like 80 by the end of her life but looks 40 and she wears a green ribbon around her neck at all times 😈 maris and rhea have an on/off relationship since maris was like 17. anyway rhea starts convincing maris that elinor is a spy for aerion whos there to seduce helaena and helped kidnap her to essos etcetc and maris goes a little nutso (her daughter DID get kidnapped by her exile son sooo) and confronts elinor but elinor is like wahhhh what tf is going on😭 rhea hates me bcos i found out she's a necromancer and probably undead😭 and maris begs forgiveness and then rhea shoots a crossbow into elinor's skull lol. so maris kills rhea :3 whether elinor was a spy or if rhea was undead is unclear. maybe it didnt even happen and maris was just going crazy lol who knows...

the stranger is jaehaerys 😈 maris and jaehaerys have a tense relationship very bad from the outset. jaehaerys loved aerea and after aerea died he became the Stoic Man that maegor kept trying to beat him into. he's obsessed with recreating valyria in westeros because he wants a real home. aerea's name is forbidden or itll cause a screaming fight. jae wanted to name his heir aerion after her but maris was like LMAO over my fuckin dead body. but he was like well fucking one of them will be. so the younger twin he named aerion and maris never forgave him for the slight. she thinks he's a weird creep about viserys(his mother-father) and after viserys dies and jae starts collecting boy youths that look like him she fully loses any respect for him she thinks he's the most disgusting man ever. doesnt like the way he treats viserys(their son). viserys ends up favouring a young hightower cousin of maris which is the last straw and she snaps and does a murder-suicide RIP babygirl

so... about lunter.

...i'll understand if you stop reading now, but i still have some meta to squeeze from this so tag along for that at least.

well. if you know me at all you'll know i have a thing for problematique pairings. i crave complex romantic dynamics that have a lot of narrative potential and explore every aspect of its characters and their development throughout (and after) the story. usually, that means being into stories that involve trauma and grief. think asgore and toriel in undertale.

this is not my first time keeping up with the owl house: to satisfy my curiosity, i would check the tumblr tag every time it trended [tumblr trending tab is my newspaper], but it never caught my attention beyond that. well, that's until i came to know about lunter. see, there's something about fandom hated pairings that just speaks to me - what is it that people are so outraged about? is it because the dynamic it's too complicated? well then give me it, i will chomp it down! anyways.

so, what's the verdict? before i go into that, let me talk about Luz and Hunter™.

BUT…. BUT, SIBLINGS!: i was well aware of this claim while watching the show and i was worried that i wouldn't be able to dispute it. look, i wouldn't jump ship either way (ha, get it?). i've survived dear ships of mine becoming incestuous through weird loops (vlr/ztd i am looking at you). it's fine. not the end of the world. but, to be honest, i don't necessarily think the sibling aspect is the point of hunter and luz's dynamic.

i think their dynamic is definitely playful, and i can see how people can say it's sibling-coded. tbh, i'm just tired of every platonic relationship between guy and girl being labeled as sibling-like: it's a trend that started as a response of the opposite case when people assume guy and girl getting along equals romance (along with the “dumb of ass & lesbian”), but lately it's plasted over EVERYTHING and i just miss when people would be like "you know guys and girls can be just friends, right?" my point is that both luz and hunter have other clearly defined sibling-like relationships: luz and king, and hunter with gus. although the later isn’t as clear-cut as the former (luz and king refer to each other as siblings a handful of times), i believe that’s what the point of the episode is when hunter consoles gus in his “room”. the mere domesticity of it, and the fact that hunter is the first in the show to breach gus’ space like that and encourage him is, IMO, enough imagery to justify that claim. if anything it’s way more explicit than what is done with luz and hunter. i am open, however, to revise the claims that might indicate that siblifying luz and hunter could be the show’s point. in my eyes, the evidence is:

the fact that hunter has a deeper connection with luz out of everyone in the group.

how hunter is neither witch nor demon nor human and he's up for "adoption".

i won’t count the family line because, found family, duh - it’s the whole point of camila taking care of the kids in TTT, and the only person who has a genuine parental link to camila besides luz is vee. previous to FTF’s release i was genuinely considering an ending where hunter would migrate to the human realm, in which case him staying with luz and camila could lead to the canonification of the sibling claims. however, a main point in that argument was about hunter not having magic - with the newfound knowledge that hunter does have powers due to flapjack’s sacrifice, i believe the chances for hunter ending in the human realm are significantly less, especially when we consider that it’s very likely that luz will stay in the boiling isles.

dynamic wise, i would take the playfulness claim a lot more seriously if that ever developed past their first (real) meeting in hunting palismen. i think playfulness is just something that is baked into luz - we see it when she sticks out her tongue at amity after she sees her belittle willow, for example. however, these instances are just meant to be humorous, as i believe that what their dynamic truly is (pre-hollow mind) is more of a commentary on hunter’s self-seriousness contrasted with luz’s carefree “i’m here to make friends” attitude. hunter expects her to be afraid of him and to treat him with respect, and the times that she doesn’t he either gets mad or retaliates back. to me, it proves a point about how young hunter actually is, something that is remarked a handful of times during hunting palismen - luz won’t treat him like that because she can see hunter is a kid, just like her. even the most sibling-like they get (smacking each other after the fake-kiss) is just meant to subvert expectations via using the trope of the waking up kiss and then turning it around where they act like siblings instead [it’s also a way to establish hunter as far as it can from being a love interest for luz]. again, those instances are not part of hunter and luz’s dynamic as it stands now. like, if someone could point out the supposed “playfulness” in their interactions in TTT… nah, you can’t. their friendship has evolved past that. and you know, you can interpret that however you want. but your reading of their dynamic as “sibling-like” is just that: a reading. therefore not supported by canon atm and i’ll take full advantage of that.

speaking of siblings… it’s time to talk about the wittebane brothers.

BUT THE PARALLELS!: i do think in the show there's a real attempt to parallel phillip and caleb to luz and hunter, but i wouldn't say it's with the intentions of siblifying them. in actuality the point of it is that it's "debunked" at the end of TTT, when hunter states that belos fools people - and breaks the cycle of the "you and i are very alike" villain speech that luz has internalized due to her guilt.

[side note: i love that such a strong realization for hunter is also so narratively sound for luz’s own guilt. a testament of how great both characters are.]

therefore, the parallels are subverted by the show itself. another part of it is the foreshadowing: the show wants to make it clear that belos continues to be a threat and that he'll appear by the third act of the episode, and that we'll get to see some background of the wittebros too. besides that, the parallels do NOTHING to establish luz and hunter as siblings. after all, the whole point is that phillip betrayed caleb and he chose to shatter their bond, which is absolutely not what happens with luz and hunter. the subversion is a huge part of that, and then there’s also other aspects like belos never making that connection when he reveals himself to the main group. he goes out of his way to identify flapjack as evelyn and hunter as caleb, yet he never projects onto luz, instead only indulging in her guilt. moreover, it’s an aspect that only lasts during this one episode - kinda how most of the playfulness dies in hunting palismen. even if it gets referenced in the last episode, the fact that the connection will only be made in two episodes makes it so it’s not strong enough.

and honestly, i don’t have a lot of reasons to believe luz and hunter will become “siblings” by the end of the show in the likes of king and luz’s dynamic. for starters, they barely interact in FTF, hammering the point that luz and hunter’s connection grew based on the secrets they were keeping from the others - and so they could only rely on each other. now that everyone knows that hunter is a grimwalker and that luz helped belos, there’s no real reason for them to be paired up, much less during the neck-braking pace that these last episodes have been forced to take. moreover, i believe at this point hunter and luz are headed for very different paths, and it wouldn’t make that much sense for hunter to either become eda’s protegee (he wants to study magic at hexside and eda is anything but a traditional “teacher”) or be adopted by the nocedas back in the human realm (so many hints that luz will decide to stay in the demon realm, and we’ll see what camila will choose then).

HOW THE FUCK DO PEOPLE THINK LUZ IS NOT EVELYN: at this point, with only one 45 minute episode left for the entirety of the show, it’s impossible that the writers could imply that luz and hunter have a romantic connection. i’ll take the L on that, don’t worry. but holy FUCK if it isn’t clear as day that luz and hunter mirror the story of caleb and evelyn.

i hate to not start chronologically but let’s look at hollow mind first: there are pointed parallels to the silhouettes of caleb and evelyn and luz and hunter running away from belos.

this becomes even more pointed when you realize that this is the first time that hunter unambiguously rejects belos, by taking luz’s hand.

i actually love that look belos gives hunter because my god. he’s once again seeing how caleb rejects him. he has to watch yet again as he runs away with a witch.

allow me some indulgence as i repeat this: the show is explicitly paralleling evelyn to luz. she’s the evelyn in that situation. the imagery is there and it’s clear as water.

but okay. by those standards, luz and hunter being paralleled to imagery of the wittebane bros would support the point that they’re uhhh sibling-endgame. you got me there. counterpoint: who is evelyn supposed to be in the story?

evelyn, as the story masha told says, is the witch that dazzled caleb with her magic and drew him away from philip and their witch hunting agenda. now, it’s important to note that this story is obviously told from belos’ perspective: we also see how masha is skeptical to the recounting, judging philip as a jealous brat. we’re meant to criticize the story because we know it comes from philip’s perspective. therefore, while the story portrays evelyn as a bad influence that took caleb down the wrong path with her temptations, it’s most likely that caleb had already changed his mind about witches and wild magic, and him falling for a witch is just further proof that, at that point, he didn’t see them as threats anymore. this would make sense taking into account how hunter behaves in the show: he’s eager to help belos and to do that he’s accumulated a lot of knowledge about everything concerning wild magic, but also it’s extremely clear that hunter is deeply interested by it. even when he’s convinced that wild magic decimated his family, he’s still fascinated by it. it is for that reason that is really important that the first time luz and hunter bond is through their knowledge and passion for magic.

this is because, in my eyes, that’s exactly how caleb and evelyn would have bonded all those years ago. evelyn doesn’t show him something new that caleb is entranced with: she’s part of a system that he’s already warmed to, that he probably studies in his own time. evelyn just happened to be the last straw that made caleb fully commit to abandoning witch-hunting.

and as we just revised in hollow mind, that’s exactly what happens between luz and hunter. she reaches out, and he accepts her.

luz is hunter’s first real connection to wild magic: it’s clear by the way he simply doesn’t contain his fascination and catches himself after the fact. up to that point, no one has filled that spot for him. not even flapjack!

it’s funny to me because of hunter’s little monologue at luz about her not planning ahead. at this point, he’s just projecting onto her: hunter clearly doesn’t know what to do about this revelation that he likes talking about magic with luz. he folds so easily the moment that she expresses her disappointment. and i love how flapjack is completely divorced from this moment: he clearly has no problems with belos feasting on palismen, even understanding how crucial it is for the emperor’s survival, and since flapjack is yet to choose him he doesn’t even have that connection to a palisman to understand the real horror of putting them in danger. no, he lets luz go because she’s the first person that he’s talked to about magic without mincing his words or expecting punishment. the fact that luz doesn’t consider him a friend is reason enough. and not only does he let her go: he reveals his real name to her. i wish this moment would’ve been given more weight by hunter like, not telling his name to every person who crosses his path from that episode onwards, but oh well. still it’s a real moment of connection and vulnerability that is absent from any other relationship hunter has in the show (especially fucking willow sdjfhdjsk like you could argue for gus, darius and even AMITY but NOT willow), especially during the time hunter was 100% still on belos’ side.

again let me bring up the imagery: hunter lets a wild witch go, during a mission where whatever she’s taking is key for the emperor’s survival. he makes that decision, and then he goes and makes that decision again when he takes luz’s hand in hollow mind. think about this moment compared to hunter’s behavior in eclipse lake: the moment he sets eye on the titan’s blood, he doesn’t rest until he takes it for himself, relentlessly fighting amity to do so. in hunting palismen, he deliberately avoids fighting luz - and even protects her from kikimora -, even when she’s proven that she’s capable enough to kick his ass in combat. not out of pity, just genuinely out of a desire to honor the connection that they now have.

flapjack is also pretty important in this whole equation. masha makes a point in using the imagery of flapjack (not any other bird: flapjack) to show the things evelyn used to “charm” caleb away.

if they’re drawing from philip’s notes to create the imagery for the story, then it’s almost guaranteed that flapjack used to be caleb’s palisman, and it checks out as flapjack suggests the name “caleb” when hunter is undercover in the flyer derby episode. if flapjack was able to find hunter now, then it’s really possible that he’s detected most of the other grimwalkers and even been a crucial piece to allow them to break free out of belos’ control. again, belos saying “goodbye, evelyn” when he mortally wounds flapjack also contributes to this.

it’s not my intention to draw significance away from flapjack’s connection with hunter. it’s clear to me that the writers want to highlight this dynamic and flapjack transferring his powers to hunter when he brings him back to life is their way to homage their link. however, flapjack seems to immediately take a liking to luz even before hunter arrives to take the palismen away. i hate not being able to draw a clear conclusion (aka, flapjack knew that hunter would be arriving soon, for some reason) because palismen behavior is uhhh kinda erratic? and i’ve felt this way since the palismen episode in S1. but still, as the palismen cower in fear when they’re kidnapped, flapjack confidently heads out along with luz to confront hunter. if anything, he might be the exception to the rule, having identified the fact that hunter was indeed coming in close contact during that night.

what i want to highlight in the hunting palismen episode is that flapjack sticks to luz first and foremost. again, coming back to the imagery used in TTT, it’s implied that evelyn either carved caleb’s palisman or gave him the tools to do so. likewise, it’s important that flapjack uses luz as a vehicle to get closer to hunter, and as it happens in the show, luz meeting hunter is what leads to flapjack becoming hunter’s palisman. and if we take into account what i discussed earlier about hollow mind, to me it’s abundantly clear that luz is hunter’s evelyn in that moment. and this is supported by the fact that flapjack allows luz to use him to get closer to hunter once he gets possessed by belos during TTT, after we see the story of the wittebanes.

furthermore, all these little hints take on a deeper meaning when you realize that none of these parallels are given to willow, ever. not even by showing that evelyn specialized in plant magic or something like that. even in TTT hunter’s crush on willow is inconsequential to the larger plot, as the show frames hunter with luz during the wittebros story.

OKAY. LUZ IS EVELYN. WHAT NOW?: well. not much else, unfortunately. even if caleb and evelyn are explicitly stated as having a romantic relationship, luz being paralleled to evelyn doesn’t have to mean that she gets to be hunter’s romantic partner. there’s intentionality in luz meeting hunter after she gets a crush on amity, which leads me to believe that hunter was absolutely never meant to be seen as a possible LI for luz (the “sibling-like” interactions also contribute to that) as canon stands right now. like i said, i’ll take the L on that.

however i still feel that this should’ve been pointed out in the show, since the imagery is purposeful in linking luz and evelyn together. like i said on my review of the show, i feel like an easy fix to the boring dynamic between hunter and willow should’ve been to make hunter crush on luz instead. IMO, that’s the easiest way of following through the parallels without putting luz into a dumb love triangle: let her have her endgame with amity as hunter grows out of his crush and considers luz as a loving platonic companion. that way, it avoids the problem of making hunter betray belos just because he’s crushing on a witch. but, y’know, there are options beyond what we can already do with canon.

so, what’s the verdict?

i’ll be completely honest with you and say i fell completely in love with luz and hunter’s dynamic and was actively seeking their [romantic] endgame. as i said in the beginning, i love me a great, narratively compelling pairing, and luz and hunter fill the quota to perfection. whereas eda and raine do nothing with their complicated backstory (read my review for more thoughts on them), luz and hunter connection is implemented really well in canon and there’s a very compelling back-and-forth as they figure themselves out. unlike amity, hunter is crucial in the plot (amity only gets her parents’ business, which is not even that impactful either). and unlike willow, luz has a very defined dynamic with hunter that has evolved as the plot progresses.

just… part of me wonders if luz and hunter not being together is yet again part of the trope deconstruction. you expect luz and hunter to get together? sike! they get other LIs that aren’t half as interesting as what they could be together. and what annoys me is that the show could’ve done the same with belos: imagine if the show found a quick replacement for belos as the new big bad that’s not even half as interesting as the emperor, just for the sake of subverting expectations. and before you tell me “ummm, the collector?”, by now it’s clear that belos continues to be the big bad, since he’s now back in action manipulating the collector once again.

i just really, genuinely wish the show was able to go through a main ship comparable to luz and hunter’s potential together. like, if the representation is so important in the story, then make hunter a girl! like, i don’t know. there’s just unlimited potential in lunter. they’re foils to each other (both believed they were put in roles by a greater force and great things were waiting for them, only to realize that was a lie/a fantasy); they’re both deeply integral to the plot; they’re characters that challenge each other and become better people because of that; their dynamic grows and transforms due to their connection to the larger story; they’re paralleled to the couple that kickstarted this whole conflict to begin with; extremely long etcetera.

as canon stands right now, i’m very unsatisfied with luz and hunter’s romantic endgames. that won’t stop me from appreciating and loving the potential of a lunter endgame. however, potential is the key word here. in a world where they were meant to end up together, this show would’ve been a lot better as a narrative. it’s a shame that it isn’t, and i will mourn that forever.

Warning, a lot of the "god I hate the fandom" moments will mostly be directed at the wider community {e.g. this includes the old toxic nemesis fanboy 40 year old men and such}. Unpopular opinion

people don't really have many opinions about kagrenac, unless they are me, but I think despite her harsh persona, I like to headcanon her as someone who is actually very good to her mentees and treats her allies well, even if she has a reputation for eviscerating those who oppose her. there's a reason why people are loyal to her beyond her ideas themselves.

Favourite relationship

outside of OCs, i think her relationships with dumac, almalexia, and nerevar are all fascinating in different ways. dumac because there's a dynamic about trust at play. almalexia because we have 'similar but different' ruling there - kagrenac has a v similar paranoid breakdown in my version of events. nerevar because they're foils in a fascinating way.

Favourite headcanon

i hit her with my transgenderism beam. i think she steals bedcovers and is not a morning person. i don't think she can cook well. i think she's a fairly missable face in a crowd - average in the sense that she's the median by dwemer standards, neither tall nor short, not particularly distinct, etc. - and when dressed plainly - which is fairly often - she does not stand out in a room, she does not have a special 'aura' about her at all. i think she uses bthemetz's bathtub to grow experiments in (her job is philosophical engineering but her hobby is bizarre biology, it turns out) and as a result bthemetz ends up making a second bathroom in her home in the void. i think she's a snob about house music. i think she can't hold her drink that well and it's kind of adorable. i think she's got a fairly non-expressive face + a resting bitch face combo. i think she always meant well but lacked the trust in others to see fault in her plans and her ways, seeing all others as incapable of really understanding her vision. i think she misses bthemetz, knows she misses bthemetz, and loathes this about herself. i think she's a hot mess.

Childe. Um. I am so very sorry I have tried very hard to get into him, and as much as his character intrigues me and I find parts of him relatable, I hate his design so much. IT'S. Entirely irrational of me. LIKE. HES A GOOD CHARACTER AND THERES SO MUCH OF HIM THAT INTRIGUES ME but also he looks like someone left a tangerine on a marble countertop for like a week, and I just can't get past it no matter how hard I try :') I rlly wish I could like him tho bc so many of my friends like him and he's really popular, and I DO like his character!! (Like I REALLY like that he's a kid who fell into the Abyss and had so very many things to deal with at a very young age that he scared people so they sent him away, and he's extremely young and has so many aspirations and his government and family have not been fair to him!!!) However, his sense of style,,, bothers me. And I have always been a huge sucker for character design (grew up on graphic novels and comics, lol) it's a major player in how I choose favorites, and I can't stand his goofy little outfit. His boots are cool tho. I do adore his boots. And I like his scarf, and his shirt collar? But I just. Wish he leaned more into the reds and they gave him a more sedimentary rock-type color palette. It would suit his hair much better, and sedimentary rocks are formed by settling in water, and are often carved through BY water, so they could have used blues as an accent color (which would easily bring out his eyes) and I just. I love his story, I love his character, I was a little sad when they took away his purple and made him Anemo (I really really wanted there to be a narrative about reclaiming the element of Electro as his own, not something of Ei's, (Plus Elctro grant trigger being feelings of loneliness or isolation or stark Difference from society) but the Anemo vision suits him just as well and I feel really punctuated him standing up for the Traveler in that cutscene in his quest because him choosing to defend us was him essentially choosing his freedom from the past, which I find IMMENSELY cool). Also I'm a sucker for inhuman characters. I love how he's a doll. A puppet. I love how he seeks humanity. I love his passion. i love him to bits he's so silly I'm gonna shake him around :3

The Fatui as an organization just makes me sad. You ever talk to Fatui npcs? Some of their quests have brought me to tears. They get treated so horribly by the Harbingers and yet they believe with all their soul and heart in the Tasritsa and I just. :'( they deserve a lot better and they make me sosad and there are side quests you do for some of them in the Chasm that make me so so emotional bc it's so clear how little the Harbingers actually care about them :(
