Yeah, I know I'm kinda double posting but after posting them separately I wondered what these would look like next to each other. They are both still completely vanilla (except for textures) and I can't imagine modding them heavily tbh.

Hey Dutch what is your opinion on crises core reunion ? I had few ca tell me it didn’t do anything for zack and aerith relationship it just made things worse ? I don’t know we’re they get that belief from but it’s there opinion. Did you think the story was ok and gave good context on what they mean to each other?
People give too much flack to Crisis Core. I only played the original CC back on the PSP so I can't say anything about whether or not Reunion made it better or worse, but I enjoyed the original. But part of that is because I simply had lower expectations for portable games than I do for AAA pc or console titles. I won't deny that the game has a bunch of stuff that could have been done better (Cough, genesis, cough), but it had its strong points as well. I think some of the basic concepts of Crisis Core are good in principle, like theme of hopes and dreams, and watching how Zack through adversity unwillingly becomes the hero that he always wanted to be. But the execution was often lacking. I love the idea of watching a several friends slowly break, and I think there is potential in tying that story into them being "monsters" and exploring what it really means to be a monster vs being a hero. But again. The way it was handled made it rather ridiculous and overly obtuse. The constant quoting of Loveless, ESPECIALLY without it ever getting a clear meaning that allows the player to connect with it, Angeals random dramatic self-pity, and a bunch of other stuff just made it so that storywise a lot of the bad overshadowed the good. But I played CC for Zack and Aerith, and they were perfect in my opinion.I loved seeing Aerith like an actual 16 year old girl and how her time with Zack rubbed off on her and caused her to start living every day to the fullest. I still think that the scene with Aerith hugging Zack from behind is one of the most romantic scenes in FF, simply because of how viscerally real it is. Her trying to make small talk, him just being there, choosing to mourn in the presence of the woman he loves, not needing to be consoled, but just needing her presence. And then that hug "sometimes you don't need words to tell a person how you're feeling" indeed. This is also a part of the reason I am convinced Aerith was still projecting Zack onto Cloud at the end of Rebirth "our place", "the church", Yeah right. For Cloud and Aerith the church is just a place they happened to spend about 5 minutes at one point, not even the place they met. Meanwhile Zack went there to see her for I think about one and a half years. He goes there instantly in intergrade, he goes there in Rebirth, we see him waiting there for Aerith at the end of rebirth, the core visual for Crisis core was changed to TAKE PLACE IN THE CHURCH. But the Church is Cloud and Aeriths place.....yeah right. Either that is an intentional hint that Aerith is still projecting, or the writing has fallen off a cliff. Then we have the other character moments, Cloud and Tifa pining for each other, the parallels between Cloti and Zerith. Zack promising Aerith he'll come for her underneath the water tower. And my favorite Aeriths "23 tiny little wishes", all encompassed in the one with to "spend more time with Zack". Which is then ultimately fulfilled via Cloud in the OG/rebirth. And then of course there is the ending, my favorite ending of any game ever aside from Nier:Automata. Man I bawled my eyes out. So yeah, I like Crisis Core, it's messy, but it's messy with a lot of gold in it, and for a portable title I think that's not half bad.

Nintendo Switch Weekly Round-Up for the Week Ending November 9th, 2024
Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the Nintendo Switch Weekly Round-Up for the week ending November 9th, 2024. A pretty quiet week on the whole, especially given how deep into the holiday season we are. But we have a Mario game, and that alone makes it a noteworthy one. There are a few other interesting new releases, and we'll have a look at the good stuff. Let's check out this week in the world of Switch!
Featured New Releases
Mario & Luigi: Brothership ($59.99)
The latest in the Mario & Luigi series of RPGs, and the first not developed by the now-defunct AlphaDream. The reviews so far are positive but not overwhelmingly so, with many saying the game drags on a lot longer than it should. I suspect if you were okay with the last couple of non-remake games in the series, you'll probably be fine here. Luigi appears to have been done a bit dirty though, with Mario taking far more of the spotlight than he usually does in this series. Hollywood changes a man.
Atari 50: The First Console War DLC ($7.99)
The second piece of paid DLC for Atari 50 adds a new timeline covering what modern Atari is referring to as the first console war: Atari 2600 versus Mattel Intellivision. Well, let's go with it. You get 19 additional games here, including some of the M Network 2600 games and a few other bits and bobs. No actual Intellivision games here, but maybe Atari has other plans for that stuff. The new documentary content is the highlight as usual, with video interviews, scanned documents, and more.
Metal Slug Tactics ($24.99)
Do you like Into The Breach? Do you also like Metal Slug? Are you interested in a combination of those two things, done up with some stellar pixel art and a great soundtrack? Because that's pretty much what this is. Honestly speaking, I'm not exactly sure what took so long for this game to release, but the end result is fine enough so that's the most important thing.
River City Saga: Three Kingdoms Next ($29.99)
I guess the first River City Saga: Three Kingdoms game did well enough to get a sequel, because here we are. This one picks up where the last one left off, and it's again a pretty ludicrous retelling. Even more so this time, because you have a motorcycle. A Japanese delinquent-style motorbike. In ancient China. You know what? That's pretty awesome. If you liked the first one, I can't imagine this one displeasing you. I mean, unless you hate motorcycles.
Arcade Archives VS The Quest of Ki ($7.99)
This week's Arcade Archives release is the rarely-seen VS. System version of Namco's The Quest of Ki. You need to make your way to the exit on each stage, collecting items and avoiding both enemies and obstacles. Ki has an extremely floaty jump, apparently inspired by Atari's Major Havoc, of all things. You have to master this jump to get anywhere. This arcade version of the game includes twenty new levels, so that's fun. I'm not sure if I would call this game good, but there's a certain compelling quality to its absurd difficulty.
EGGCONSOLE Xak II PC-8801mkIISR ($6.49)
And here's our latest EGGCONSOLE release. This one continues the Xak saga, so if you want some Ys-ish action-RPG with just enough Japanese text to get you into trouble, here you go. We're apparently getting another version of Ys next week, which is very EGGCONSOLE. This is a decent game and you might have an easier time brute forcing it than some other games in this line-up. Not much more to say than that.
EcoGnomix ($19.99)
A combination of roguelite and city builder. You have to build a city using resources you gather from the mines underground. You'll have to keep going deeper and deeper to gather those goodies, which brings more and more danger. This one has some seriously mixed reviews over on Steam, with some people really liking it and others finding its difficulty balance to be out of whack. You decide, I guess.
Bioframe Outpost ($24.99)
This is another Metroidvania-style adventure, but it has some interesting elements to it that might catch your eye. You have to photograph creatures, learn how the flora and fauna of this alien-infested outpost interact, and take advantage of that to survive. The more knowledge you gather, the better your chances of survival. I haven't had a chance to play this yet, but it has my interest.
The Alchemist of Ars Magna ($79.99)
A visual novel with turn-based RPG segments blended in, all wrapped up with a middling translation. It's an okay game, but take a look at that price. That is ridiculous. It's quite literally double the price of its Steam version, and I think that was already a bit too high for what you get here. Don't waste your money, unless you love wasting money. In which case, do what makes you happy.
Virche Evermore -EpiC: Lycoris- ($49.99)
A fan disk follow-up to Virche Evermore -ErroR: Salvation-, offering up five new stories in the same setting. What kind of tales can be conjured up in this world where everyone dies at age 23? If you loved the original and want more, here you go. If you didn't, why would you? And if you're new, don't start here! That's about it.
Magical Bakery ($29.99)
This is a single-player time management/cooking game, and the main gimmick it brings with it into this crowded genre is that it's magical cooking. From what I can tell, that doesn't really have much of a real effect on the gameplay. Mostly a theming thing. But hey, that's fine. Magical cupcakes. Magical croissants. Magical customers? You wear a silly hat! I don't know.
Popcorn Rocket ($4.99)
A vertically scrolling widescreen shooter that takes a weird popcorn gag and runs all the way down the street and back with it. It's cheap and while it is not my cup of tea it very well might tickle your fancy sufficiently for a fiver. Or splurge and spend an extra three bucks to get a good shooter from Arcade Archives. Your call.
Angel at Dusk ($14.99)
This is an attempt at making a shooter that takes the idea of cutting off all the excess very seriously. Bullet hell meets body horror in this vertical shoot 'em up, and while it gives off the vibe of being only for the hardcore fans, it's actually surprisingly approachable. It includes a tutorial that does a better job of explaining how to play a game like this than pretty much any other I've seen. If you like the genre and are down with the bizarre art style, I think you'll have a great time with it.
Monarchy ($14.99)
In this game you play as a monarch with a horse and an archer to your name, and not much else. The king of nothing, really. You explore a forest and eventually establish a kingdom, one that will be immediately attacked when the night falls. And there's the loop, really. Explore by day to gather resources and find things to help you expand your kingdom, and defend that kingdom by night. Not bad, on the whole.
Tobla - Divine Path ($5.99)
A relatively short puzzle adventure where you have to solve physics-based problems. The description in the shop uses CAPITAL letters to try to EMPHASIZE points but it ends up looking FUNNY because caps tend to come across as YELLING in text. Anyway, this is okay for the price it's asking. It's one of those games in the Portal mold, but obviously not as good as that. At its best when it's offering up smart little puzzles, at its worst when it wants you to engage in more action-y bits.
Miyamoto ($3.99)
This is a pretty good little strategy game. I remember playing it on mobile a couple years ago, and it works just as well here. It's kind of hard to explain it in brief, but if you have an interest in it I think four dollars is a small price to pay for the punt. I'll vouch for it, at least.
Jetpack Kiwi ($5.99)
A colorful little side-scrolling shooter about a kiwi with a jetpack. You get twenty levels, multiple characters, and support for up to two players via local multiplayer. Not my thing, but I could see it appealing to some.
SUGAMENIA ($9.99)
I haven't had a chance to play this yet, but it looks decent. It's an action-platformer with somewhat open levels yet a linear progression that I would argue gets it kicked out of the Metroidvania club. You have to make use of a drone to solve lots of puzzles along the way. From what I can gather, it's not a super-lengthy game. That might be a plus for some.
That's all for this week, friends. We'll be back next Saturday with another Round-Up as we continue through the month of November. Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake hits next week, and a person can't help but be pretty excited about that. There are plenty of other games, too. It's going to be a busy one, so do look forward to it. As ever, I will plug both my Patreon (where you can find lots of cool exclusive articles) and my Ko-Fi (tips help me run this blog). There, plugged. I hope you have a super Saturday, and as always, thanks for reading!

Okay so this is going to be veeeeeerrryyy Long. I am gonna list all of the Options you have to experience this Story.
!!So do be Sure to read all of it even though it's very Long (I mean you want to get Into Ace Attorney , so there is a lot of Reading)!!!!!:
Option 1. The Games (pls hear me Out)
I know you Said you are broke but I am gonna list all of the options so that includes this, because the Games are great and I can recommend them.
The Games actually Go on Sale quiet reguarly so with patience so you May be able to afford them then. Maybe idk
First of all there are a lof of Games. You don't have to get all If the Games at once. They are wayyy to Long for that.
If you want to start, start with the Phoenix Wright Trilogy (or the great Ace Attorney chronicels as they are standalone)
But I recommend starting with the First game Trilogy ->the Investigation Collection ->The Apollo Justice Trilogy. -> Great Ace Attorney Chronicels(but than be played whenever) +but in general after starting with the First Trilogy then the Order is honestly Not that important
Also If you End Up playing the Games: there is No shame in save scumming and looking Up a guide. A lot of the fanbase does it!!!!
You could also consider pirating or emulating the games.
Though I'll honest I do Not know a lot about how that works.
I only Hacked my 3ds after the eshop shut down (it's actually quite easy. Just follow the how to Hack your 3ds Guide(it's a website. You can easily find it by googlin how to Hack your 3ds)
I actually have the majority of the Ace Attorney the Games on my 3ds aswell. I either installed it per h-shop or through installing a rom in the sd Card and then the sd Card Into my 3ds. That way I can also Play Phoenix Wright vs Professor Layton as this Crossover Games isnt in modern consoles or PC yet and maybe will never be
So yea Hacking your 3ds Is a cheap Option If you have a 3ds already. (If Not you would have to buy a 3ds an idk how expencive that would be)
Emulating in general is an Option but like I already Said: idk anything of how that works
But lets say you are way to broke or impatient for the Games on Sale (understandable) or don't want to emulate.
So Here are the other Options
Option 2: The Anime ,(it's an ok Option but eh)
There is also an Ace Attorney Anime that covers the Story of the First Trilogy. It's an ok Option but I wouldn't start with this one. Like with all Anime Adaptation of a visual novel, a lot is Lost. Like a lot of Phoenix bitchy internal Dialoge. The Anime is still great but it's better to watch it later imo.
Also how would you watch it?
I think the Anime is on Crunchyroll...or you could Just kinda watch it on the Internet. I am Sure there is some Website where you can watch it.
But Like I Said I would Not really recommend starting with the anime even though I do Like the Anime
Option 3: YouTube Longplay Videos
There are YouTube Longplays without commentary that would allow you to experience the whole Game Dialoge!!
You would have to read it yourself though and aren't the one in Control of the gameplay.
But it would allow you to read all of of the Dialoge, you can Pause and ponder at you own pace and can make your own opinion without any outside influences!
I know it's Not the Same as playing the Game but it is an Option. And hey. ITS FREE!!!
Option 4: Lets Plays. It's also Free!!!!
there are a Ton of Ace Attorney letsplays on YouTube so you could choose one of them. Though be careful WHO you choose as some May never Play all of it(Like rtgame who doesnt Plan on continuing the series after finishing the First Trilogy)
The great Thing about letsplays is that there are a lot of Options and they read the Dialoge aloud. You can also experience the Journey with them, though that might Change in how you See the Games( that can be positive and negativ)
There are a lot of Letsplays so you can choose whoever you vibe with but
I would recommend: SaveDataTeam with their series: Ace Attorney with an actually Lawyer
They have played the Phoenix Wright Trilogy,
the Ace Attorney Chronicels,
Apollo Justice(the First Game of the Apollos Justice "trilogy"),
are Now finishing Dual Destinies (the second Game of the Apollo Justice "Trilogy")
and are going to Play the Investigations Collection next
and then are going to Play Spirit of Justice (the third Game in the Apollo Justice "Trilogy")
(and I know that they are going to be playing all of them because they Said so)
I can honestly really recommend them. There are 3 Guys: Zak who Plays the games and voices the Main Character, Wes who voices the majority of the Character and Prij an actual Lawyer!!!
They are a lot fun and it's nice to have a lawyers Perspective. But they also have a segment where they Look at Ace Attorney Fanart that is send in their discord at the end of every second Video!!!!
(at least nowadays, they record a Livestream and then Cut it Up Into two Videos. They Look at the Fanart at the end. Though they only Show a Portion of the Art in the YouTube Video)
So I would recommend them as Long as you don't mind some Character appearance Spoilers that might be in the Fanart. But yea it's cool to also Look at the Fanart and so thats why I can recommend them even though they haven't finished all of the Games yet.
But there are other Letsplays who finished all of the Games already. Just Pick one that you vibe with then. But be aware that a letsplay may change your opinion (positive or negative) on a Game, as when you yourself Play it
So while I implore you to Play the Games for yourself I understand that it May Not be an Option for you.
So Go forth and experience the World of Ace Attorney. Wichever way that May be. Have fun!!!
Okay sooo
I want to get into the ace attorney fandom right
BUT THE GAMES ARE EXPENSIVE AS SHIT AND IM BROKE SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME THE PLOT OF THIS THING I BEG

Thess vs Frustration
So frustrating shit at the moment:
Obviously the Russian invasion of Ukraine is a thing. And that’s getting to me on a variety of levels. Obviously there’s the big stuff, but then there’s ... I guess generational trauma? Is that a thing? Look, I was born in the late 70s, and grew up in the 80s. You know what that means I got to live through? If you guessed the more hostile part of the Cold War, then congrats, because that would be it. I’m not entirely sure that being aware that there was a chance of nuclear war with the Russians over what they pulled in Afghanistan in ‘79 was particularly good as a way to grow up; I mean, you have to wonder why you bother when everyone’s stressing about dying in nuclear winter, right? So now I’m finally over that enough to consider a future (even if it looks as bleak as shit right now), and then what happens? All the childhood shit about worrying about nuclear war with Russia comes right back again! And this time when I’m closer to the whole mess! And yes, I know NATO can’t get involved at this point; just if this keeps up, it’ll get to a point where NATO doesn’t have any choice and ... yeah. I’ve been here before. I didn’t like it when I was six. I like it even less now.
Also the xenophobia. Look, yes, I know that we’ve got a problem in this country - well, in London in specific - where there’s a bunch of Russian oligarchs who’ve payed out the ass in donations to the Tory party to be able to get a VIP pipeline into English citizenship and incidentally eat up a lot of property that they barely even live in. However, I am sick to the back teeth of people saying that we need to strip all the Russians living here of their English passports, freeze their assets and boot them out of the country. I mean, for every Russian oligarch buying the ear of a senior Tory, there’s so many more just plain folks trying to live somewhere different. I mean, my brother-from-another-mother was born in Russia, as was most of his family. Fine, he doesn’t live here, but he’s the person I think of when I think “Russian immigrant”. Yes, oligarchs interfering in things here are a problem, but the solution isn’t to get rid of every immigrant. It makes me want to punch people. But hey, if people get any more xenophobic, maybe they’ll deport me. I can think of worse things right now.
Climate-wise? Three major storms - storms big enough to have a name - in the last week, with a fourth apparently very likely to hit soon. This is not doing my sinuses or my fibromyalgia any favours whatsoever, and that’s just me. The rest of the country is not managing at all, what with the power outages and the flooding and the travel routes being all but closed down in a lot of places. The next person who tells me that climate change isn’t a thing is getting punched in the face.
And finally ... the quest for Horizon: Forbidden West. I was still thinking about it - checking out PS4 Pros on Gumtree, and there were a few affordable ones. And then I noticed something - an article that said that some games just don’t recognise a keyboard. So I used my Google-fu to see if Horizon: Forbidden West was one of those. I thought it must not be, since their PC port was so damn good. ...Turns out that no, the game won’t recognise a keyboard and mouse on any of the three consoles that’ll play it, same as its predecessor. So ... it’d have to be controller. And since today has proven that I have a difficult enough time holding up an umbrella for periods of longer than about five minutes, a console is a no-go. Well, at least I looked into that before I spent the money. It just irritates me because ... yeah, I’m not usually all that invested in getting in on the “new hotness” ... but this isn’t “new hotness” for the sake of it. This is the second installment of a series I really loved and really wanted as soon as I could get it. I don’t get hyped about this stuff very often, and it sucks that the one time I do, I can’t have it. But such is the nature of disability.
Did I mention that being disabled just blows? I got through today in “Meh; I’m used to it and I’ve functioned through worse” mode but now I’m in “I am so tired of the limitations and the pain and the everything and I just want it to stop“ mode. Which probably means it’s about time for bed. I mean, absolute last frustration is that Scruffman the office manager is away tomorrow and that means that Temp - as well as cherry-picking the typing and leaving everything longer than three minutes for me to do - is also going to spend half the day chatting to people and making sure I’m the only one doing the fucking work.
But I have an upcoming four-day weekend. That counts for something.

2021's Top 10 Games
2021 was the year of a new console generation for me, sort of? The PlayStation 5's visuals and haptic feedback are impressive, but outside of a few games (Astro's Playroom, Returnal, Ratchet & Clank) I spent very little time with the system. My family, myself included, spent far more time with the Xbox Series X. That had more to do with Game Pass than with any console exclusives though.
I also spent some time with Google Stadia™ and Amazon Luna™ this year, which I did not expect. I got access to UbiSoft plus, or select, or whatever (just to complete the axis of evil here) for $1 and my PC wasn't quite up to running Assassin's Creed Valhalla, but it ran fine on Luna. Google Stadia had a timed exclusivity for Young Souls, and I had a coupon. Both services ran better than I expected. AC Valhalla continued my long tradition of getting sucked into open world checklist games for abooooout a dozen hours, then losing interest.
The last game surprise of the year was League of Legends. Not the game itself so much (it's a game I respect at a great distance) but the...*sigh*....the brand...?
They made an RPG based on League of Legends characters, and it was really good. And they made an animated TV show based on League of Legends characters. And it was really good! If I can't blindly hate things, what am I doing with my life? Why am I even on the internet???
10. Bowser's Fury
Bowser's Fury felt familiar in the way that all Mario games do. It also felt fresh and unique in that it's an open world 3D Mario. It has a giant kaiju Bowser that shows up to fuck with your day pretty frequently, and Mario can become a kaiju kitty Mario to battle him. It's weird and cool as hell. I'm 100% hoping the next full Mario game (this one is pretty short) runs with the open world formula.
9. Fuga: Melodies of Steel
Not since Dragon Quest: Rocket Slime have I been able to declare "MY TANK IS FIGHT!" when playing a video game, so that was nice. Fuga is an RPG where you play as orphan furries in a story that seems to be allegory for World War II. Different orphans have different abilities in the TANK VS TANK BATTLES, and the combat sections are broken up by time spent performing tasks within your TANK like cooking and cleaning and being social. You can also load an orphan into the tank's SOUL CANNON if things get desperate. You probably shouldn't though.
Anyway, the characters are charming, the gameplay swapped back and forth at a comfortable clip, and it ended just before it wore out its welcome. And the boss fight music is just the right dose of melodrama. This year had a couple of good turn-based RPG's that clocked in at about 30 hours, which is A Good Thing to have between the Persona's and Dragon Quest's of the world.
8. Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy
I'm surprised at how much I enjoyed this game. I fall somewhere between apathetic and annoyed when it comes to the omnipresent Marvel craze of the past several years. That means I came into this game with no expectations or preconceived notions of what Star Lord looks like, how Gamora should act, and so on.
The game starts off pretty slowly for the first couple of hours, but ends up fleshing out each character and made me care about every member of my team. Each character got their own backstory (except for Groot, who is Groot) and I found myself kind of a fan of Guardians of the Galaxy by the end of the game? I laughed at Rocket and felt sympathy for him and also wanted to punt him into the sun at various points, which feels right. Drax always calling Peter Quill by his full name reminded me of Colin Robinson in What We Do in the Shadows. The game's frequent chatter between team members never bothered me.
I actually gave a shit about everyone on my team. The game's combat is serviceable, and controlling Star Lord only while having your other guardians fight on their own and activate their special abilities on command feels like the right battle system for the game. In battle when your meter thing fills up, Star Lord holds up his Walkman™ and calls time out like he's Zack Morris. He gives a rousing speech to his team, then they go back to combat while Culture Club or Judas Priest or something plays. It fucking WORKS. The voice work is also terrific, and I think Mantis might be the best character of the year for me. Her take on "space cadet girl who can see all the timelines" feels appropriately overwhelmed, but never stops being a joy. Sad that the game's relatively poor sales make a sequel unlikely. 7. Resident Evil: Village
Before 2019's excellent Resident Evil 2 remake, the series has always been a miss for me. Survival horror has never been my jam, but RE2Make ReMake 2 The Resident Evil 2 Remake was my game of year in 2019. So naturally I decided to see what other games in the series I'd missed out on. The answer was kind of "none" for me. Most had aged in a not-great way, even the various remasters and rereleases were pretty cludgy compared to RE2MAKE. Resident Evil 7 is very good, but VR seems to be the best way to play that game and I'm a coward, so I didn't get very far into it. I don't like the anxious feeling that game gives me in my tum-tum.
Anyway, so Resident Evil 8 comes around and I'm sitting this one out. Then my firstborn took an interest in the game and asked if we could play through it together. I'm not gonna say no. It's the right amount of unsettling and spooky, and it's full of best kind of dumb video game shit. Eagle-shaped recess in the wall? Good thing I found an eagle-shaped pendant in the other room. Ethan lost a hand? Pour some medicine water on it. Besides, if you swap weapons fast enough you can see that he clearly has at LEAST three hands.
And it's a good thing, because that dude goes through a bloody gauntlet of horrific situations. He does get stepped on by the tall steppy vampire lady though. And he gets all his baby pieces back together, so that's nice for him. I don't know why, but the hilarious moment where least-loved sibling Moreau triumphantly screams "I'm the BEST!!!" has stuck with me all year.
I do wish the back third of the game was less of a dull shooter and had more of the personality of the earlier parts. Overall, though? I'm glad my kid made me play it. And the way the internet wanted to be choked and jerked off by the 9 foot tall vampire lady was entertaining, though Heisenberg was probably the best character in that game.
6. Ruined King: A League of Legends Story
I have zero interest in League of Legends. I do, however, like me a good old turn-based RPG. This is a very good one of those. Moreover, it's immediately recognizable as a spiritual successor to 2018's very-good-but-fatally-flawed-and-horrifically-named Battle Chasers: Nightwar.
Ruined King keeps its predecessor's turn-based combat, adding some strategic depth in the form of a timeline everyone's turns and actions are charted upon. Most abilities have 3 different modes: Balance, Speed, and Power - speed is faster and weaker, power is slower and stronger. Each character can customize their skills to grant extra effects (the group healing skill can also cleanse debuffs if used in the speed lane of the time chart for example).
Ruined King doesn't really do anything groundbreaking. Every part of the game from combat to music (Gareth Coker does a great job with the soundtrack) to writing to visuals just works. By ditching the old XP system and allowing inactive party members to gain full XP, the Battle Chasers experience of slowly painting myself into a corner has been replaced with a tight 25 hours that didn't overstay its welcome.
5. Life is Strange: True Colors
The original Life is Strange is one of my favorite game experiences ever. Despite all its flaws, it had a lot of heart and a strong core. It's impossible to untangle my love of the game from the circumstances in which I played it (as with all games, movies, music, etc.). I played it concurrently with a few friends, and we all discussed it and compared outcomes and choices.
Its follow-up, Life is Strange 2 didn't land quite the same for me, neither did spiritual partner Tell Me Why. Like these two games, I played True Colors with my wife and firstborn, passing the controller around and discussing major story choices. True Colors might be the best of all these games.
Alex Chen is an incredibly likeable protagonist. As with all Choices Matter protagonists, she finds herself dealing with some serious shit. She has the superpower of mega empathy? Which works better than it sounds like it might. She can read people and, when they are feeling strong emotions, she can take on those emotions for better or worse.
The game has a few emotional moments that hit hard without feeling cheap. True Colors doesn't quite stick the landing with the way the story wraps up (it asks us to accept what was - for me - one coincidence too many) but I don't care. Loved my time with the game, and it makes me want to move to small Colorado town and smoke marijuana cigarettes.
4. Griftlands
Klei makes its hay with the Don't Starve franchise. Their other games I've played (Mark of the Ninja, Invisible Inc, Oxygen not Included) fall squarely into the "I respect this a lot but don't enjoy playing it" category. With Griftlands, there's finally a Klei game that properly hooked me. A deckbuilding game with a focus on story and characters, the setting sets it apart from the rest.
The game's setting is off-kilter just enough that I can't easily pigeonhole it into a genre. "Dirty back alley steampunk" is my closest approximation. It's a deckbuilding card game with 3 unique characters, each with their own story. The game's conflict play out in either good old-fashioned combat, or in conversation. In the former you have punches and guns and dodges, as you'd expect. In the latter you have brags, apologies, and hunches and the such.
Each character has their own pool of cards for each encounter type. Throw in items and allies, and cards and outfits to unlock and the game has a buttload of replayability. It takes a little while to get rolling, but the time investment is super worth it.
3. NieR Replicant
NieR Replicant v1.4921467089079801 is the 2021 remake of the original NieR game from the Playstation 3 era. Instead of playing as sad androids like in 2017's NieR Automata, you play as sad people. I think, maybe. I'm not actually sure. I need to read the NieR wiki again.
Where NieR Automata famously made you play through it three times to see its full story. NieR Replicant does something similar, but the changes from one playthrough to the next feel very minor in a way that feels like the game does not respect my time. That said, I still enjoy spending time in that world. Replicant's world is melancholy and beautiful, and the soundtrack is likewise a gorgeous companion for this repeated journey. There are areas in the game that are a surprising departure from the rest of the game's third-person action gameplay. There's some text-heavy, choose-your-own-adventure stuff in the game, and a haunting, foreboding section that felt like it belongs in a Resident Evil game.
It's a game that I came back to again and again throughout the year. Like its successor/predecessor NieR Automata, it's a game that punches above its weight, an experience greater than the sum of its parts. The characters' stories are full of tragedy, but they are given life and depth. I found myself invested in Kaine, Weiss, and Emil. Like most video games it didn't quite reach the heights of NieR Automata for me, but I loved my time with Replicant just the same.
2. Rogue Lords
Every year seems to have one of These games. These run-based, unlock-new-shit, one-more-run games that I am absolutely glued to until I unlock every last goodie and overcome every challenge the game offers. The best comparison I can make is Darkest Dungeon meets Slay the Spire, with a classic horror theme layered over top of it.
You choose your party from the likes of Dracula, Bloody Mary, and Dr Frankenstein. You then travel from node to node engaging in combat, browsing shops, and hitting little one-off story scenarios in an attempt to find and kill Van Helsing. It's not a card game, but you find, improve, and swap out skills for your crew so the customization activates that same part of my brain.
Oh, and you play as the devil, which feels like a dumb throwaway explanation for why all these powerful entities will do your bidding. It ends up making a difference in what feels like the game's most unique mechanism though - you can spend your life essence (when it hits zero you lose) to "cheat." This can be used to play a card for free, alter the health of an ally or enemy, change the type of encounter on offer, and more. It feels cheap until you realize that doing this too often will leave you very, very vulnerable.
The customization, unlockable, strategic and tactical elements of the game combine for a delicious stew that I could not get enough of. It was just about all I played for a solid month.
1. Inscryption
For most of 2021, no game stood out enough to be my game of the year. I've enjoyed plenty of games this year, but none really felt special until Inscryption came along. I almost missed it after I spent 5 minutes with the demo and thought "Eh, this card game seems fine but nothing special." And, taken all on its own, the card game is perfectly fine but, as a fan of lots of card games both digital and tabletop, isn't anything special. It's a lane-based card game with a few mechanics and a very small pool of cards.
If you've heard of Inscryption, you've probably heard that the game Goes Places and little else, as it's very hard to talk about this game without spoiling what makes it so special. My understanding of what the game is on a fundamental level changed a few times during play. There are little "Huh? Uh, THAT seems weird" moments here and there that slowly pile up. "What's this? I wonder if I can...oh holy shit, YUP."
The game's aesthetic is incredibly effective. You start off in what seems to be a cabin, trapped by a sociopath who insists that you play a creepy little card game with him. It involves animals and blood sacrifice and teeth. The music is a low thrum that slowly gets under your skin and accentuates the game's sense of unease. The sound effects are likewise wet and upsetting.
The game even hit me with an unexpected emotional moment. I don't think every part of the game is perfect, but it is greater than the sum of its parts. It's a game that used up my brain's idle cycles for the couple of weeks I was playing it. It's a strong candidate for "I wish I could erase the experience from my brain and play it for the first time again." And I can't say too much apart from "Even if you don't normally like card games, you should play Inscryption."

console vs terminal vs shell
consoles were attached directly to mainframes
terminals were like “thin clients” that connected to the mainframe over the network
wrapped around the hardware and kernel is the shell which exposes operating system functions, the user would connect to a shell and start working using the command line interface.
today consoles is still in the same sense, the monitor + keyboard which you sit closest to or directly connected to your "mainframe/server/pc”. Its still quite muddy where the lines are drawn.
kernel.org says this
Create /dev/console (real console) and /dev/tty0 (master virtual console):
Basically anything can become “the real” console by messing around in /dev/console. I guess its safe to assume that this is what the console means today, the main “interface” that is directly connected to the box. There also exists virtual consoles like tty0.
Virtual consoles and terminals seem to be basically the same thing. Its possible to see how many users are connected to shell by typing the command “w”

2020 May Update
I hope you're all staying safe and healthy during this time of Coronavirus!
We continue towards the finish line, slowly, but surely. Coronavirus did throw a few wrenches in our plans. Our talks with a publisher about a possible sponsored appearance at an upcoming event stalled.
But that was always just a possibility. We have a backup plan. If we didn't win a sponsor, we were just going to pay our own way to a convention. That's what most indies do! Anyway, that's canceled too. It doesn't seem like there'll be any conventions to showcase in the near future...
Nevertheless, we did move forward in other areas. We've got the press materials ready as well as the game's official launch site up. You can view it in its prelaunch state at this link. NOTE, It is in a "prelaunch" state, so some media links are being withheld until reveal time. But there are a bunch of new pictures and artwork you can look at.
You might notice the link reads "phoenotopia.wordpress.com". The plan is to direct "phoenotopia.com" to it in the near future. That means if you wanted to reach this tumblr specifically, you'll have to visit it at its tumblr link, "phoenotopia.tumblr.com" (which, I just noticed doesn't work... huh). Anyway, since this is a dev blog, I'll talk a little bit about the journey of creating the website.
SQUARESPACE vs WIX vs WORDPRESS
I actually tried 3 different services (in the above order), before I settled on wordpress. I did a bunch of researching, and most reviews seemed to point at WIX >= SQUARESPACE >>> WORDPRESS.
I went with Squarespace first, since it was recommended a bunch on some youtube videos I saw (guess marketing works). Even though it didn't win outright in the reviews, my impression of it was "less quantity, but more quality." I tried it and found it serviceable. It was kinda sluggish, with some not so intuitive areas. I had to ask for help a few times for some things that would seem simple ("how do I change the BG and font color and of the music player?", etc).
That was last year, when I *thought* I was near launch and would need a press site soon. One year later (present day), it was time to create a press site again, and since my website with Squarespace expired (I had only signed up for a trial period), it was a good opportunity to try Wix, especially since Pirate had lots of praise for Wix.
My impression of Wix was that it was... too distracting. After I chose a theme, in the editor view I felt bombarded by menus. Everywhere you move the mouse, things kept lighting and popping up. And it was slow. So I guess it was sorta like Squarespace, but maybe even a little worse?
(Easy ways to preview the website from phones and tablets was one of wordpress’s neat features)
What prompted me to try Wordpress was one of their slogans "35% of the web uses WordPress". If it's good enough for 35% of websites, it's good enough for me! I ended up liking it most of all. It's definitely less featured, which suited me, since I'm not trying to create something too fancy either. Unlike the other website builders which emphasize free-form, wordpress was more rigid. I couldn't drag and drop an element just anywhere - I found that comforting in a "I can't screw this up" sorta way. The most important thing was that it was fast. Loading the editor view to Wix took 11 seconds vs 4 seconds with Wordpress. And the speed advantage of wordpress extends across every action. Similarly, when Chrome launched 10+ years ago, it was also less featured vs Firefox, but it became my choice browser. I guess speed is something I value highly.
Anyway, my experience is from a drag/drop perspective with minimal coding. This is also NOT a paid advertisement. However, if wordpress would like to send some money my way, I would not be opposed... (call me!)
Achievements, Bugfixes, and Cleanup
Lots of small tasks and polish was done over the past 2 months. I finally fixed the time tracking bug - important because the Speed Run achievement depended on it. I also finally finished implementing all the technical stuff for the achievements. There was a bug where some enemies would stack up too many light sources, causing them to appear too bright and drain system resources. That's now also fixed. Lots of other small ones that don't bear mentioning.
A neat trivia about the game is that there's a final super hard achievement for those seeking to prove their mastery over the game. The player has to beat the game having never picked up a heart or energy upgrade. When playing under this constraint, some enemies can even kill the player in one hit! In the game's most current iteration, even I failed to achieve it, so I'm definitely going to have to go in and tweak things a little more.
Age Ratings
I went and got the game's age rating. I did a little research on this - it's quite fascinating. ESRB would be the age ratings board for the United States (where I'm based). But if you were in Europe, you'd get a PEGI rating. Then there's ACB for Australia and so forth. So if you wanted to launch a game globally, you'd have to deal with this process over and over, and each country rates things a little differently... that's a lot of work!
Enter IARC (International Age Rating Coalition), which aimed to simplify the process by being the one standard that you apply to, and from which you could then get the equivalent rating for all participating countries. IARC is an entirely automated process - probably necessary due to the boom of digital titles across all platforms, particularly mobile.
IARC is great for me, because they relaxed the standards for getting a rating. From my understanding, the process used to be more difficult. And you'd have to pay ESRB a hefty chunk to get a rating, but with IARC, it's totally free! So long as it's for digital and it's used only on licensed sites and store fronts. If I wanted to launch the game physically, I'd have to deal with ESRB on an individual basis again.
Without further ado, here's Phoenotopia's IARC ratings:
Fascinating... Phoenotopia is rated "Mature" in Australia... but for "Horror". Which seems suspect. The horror elements are rare (remember Dreadlands?). But when I was answering their questionnaire, they provided a video example of what they considered "horror", and it was pretty mild. About as mild as my game, so I checked that box. It is what it is...
We also got a "Teen" rating for ESRB for reasons of Fantasy Violence and "Mild Blood". This one is kinda iffy. In the game, if you hit a giant bug, it spits out a few drops of green blood. Does that really count as blood? Ocarina of time skirted by with an E rating 2 decades ago, and it let a dude spit out green blood. However, since IIARC is an automated process, I didn't see any place to dispute. But also, I wouldn't have disputed it anyway. A "T" rating is cooler than an "E" rating!
I'd like to mention this is not a paid advertisement for IARC. However, if IARC would like to send some money my way, I would not be opposed... (call me!)
Submission
I expect to polish the game for about 2 (maybe 3) more weeks. After which, I'll be submitting the game to the console "authority". From my understanding, I'll then have to wait a month while they "inspect" the title. After which, I'm then cleared to have an official launch date - which I'll probably set to be 1 month after getting approval.
So the plan is to have a very short marketing campaign. The reveal trailer will basically drop 1 month before release. And we're going to sprint to the finish line. Some marketing campaigns are 6 months to a couple years. Ours will be one month... Let's hope it works.
Wrench
That's what the plan looks like right now, but there is a possible upcoming wrench in this whole thing. I recently learned that my version of Unity is too old. Games running on old Unity versions are not automatically accepted - so I'll have to apply for an exemption. If the exemption gets rejected, we can't launch without upgrading, which will require *significant* work...
This came as a surprise to me. When I started dabbling in games development a decade ago, the most common advice I found online was "Make Games, not Game Engines." I interpreted this to mean lock in your technologies. There's always going to be a new and shinier bell or whistle, but if you keep chasing it, you're not going to work on the actual content of the game. That's probably what kept me to releasing the original game on Flash. That was a game I was making as a hobby while working a full-time job. By the time I quit my job to go full-time indie dev, Flash had long been a dead technology. But I remembered "do you want to build game engines or games?" And so I pressed forward.
So that mindset could potentially backfire here. If PC was the lead SKU, we wouldn't have these issues since PC is more relaxed as a platform. Consoles, as I'm now learning, have an ever forward shifting window of technologies. If we get rejected for the exemption, there's a couple ways we can play it. One, we go through the pain of upgrading which will take months... Two, we pivot and make PC the lead SKU again, but have to handle porting that plus its specific features, which will also take months...
So why is updating such a big issue? Unity has changed drastically over the years. When I started, it was a lot less 2D friendly. They didn't have an official 2D tilemap solution, so you had to build your own or buy a 3rd party library from their asset store. I used 2DTK for tilemaps - 2DTK is now entirely deprecated. Similarly, I had to search for and purchase a good asset to display crisp text - since you couldn't even do that in Unity back then (heh). That's the story for a lot of old Unity stuff. Think of it as a first mover's "disadvantage".
Hopefully it won't come to that, since I'm pretty spent as a developer. I've been ready for this to be over, and I know many of you feel the same. Hopefully soon! As usual, I'll update in 2 months at the latest (end of June). An update might come earlier if we have some good news to share sooner. Until then!
Fanart and Cosplay
This first picture comes from roccy_chair and shows Gail basked in light. I like how her pose and equipment together form an "X". That's a neat hidden symmetry. The way she floats also kinda reminds me of Crono's "Shining" spell. Perhaps Gail should have the ability to cast spells? Hmmm...
Cody G returns with a new art depicting the 2 Moonstone enthusiasts. I like Fran's starry-eyed expression here. That's true love on display. I also like how the Moonstones are depicted as flat and coin-shaped. Very unique! Also note Gail makes an appearance in the back :D
Thanks to M1shaaa for this cosplay of Gail! There's a lot to like here! The vibrant pink hair. The costume with 3 stitches across the vest. The pose with slingshot, accurate to Gail's depiction in the box art. Amazingly, this might also be the very *first* cosplay of Gail! Will and Pirate both alerted me about it excitedly since they were pretty stoked. We joked that we crossed the final milestone in terms of fandom.

In the most up to date upgrade, it's now supplying a superior new 20 vs. 20 Battle Royale setting called Warfare. I wouldn't say V4 is groundbreaking as an MMO, however, for being mobile and also free-to-play, I rather like it. With it having actually simply introduced, some teething problems are to be expected.
Some gamers have actually reported (through 1-star testimonials) login concerns, complete servers, as well as issues obtaining the character designer to spin up. This classic ARPG was ported to Android a couple of years earlier and it deserves every cent. If you like old folklore, hack-and-slash ARPG gameplay, as well as lots of loot, this game is absolutely one you need to pick up. I would certainly claim that this port of Titan Quest has 2 major downsides. For beginners, it's not a port of the Anniversary Edition and so does not have all of the brand-new content as well as lifestyle renovations. Second of all, there's no controller assistance as well as the touch controls can really feel a bit wonky at factors. Still, it's a primarily excellent port of among my preferred games of all time and also it absolutely is entitled to an area in this list.
Brawl Stars Gems Hack
That's right, it's the grandaddy of the first-person shooter and its incredible and also equally as powerful follow up. Both of these games more than deserve a spot on this checklist not just for their eternity, however since the Android ports are really fairly great. Bethesda has taken care of a lot of the early concerns, consisting of eliminating the Bethesda.net account requirement as well as tweaking the touchscreen controls, and now I can heartily advise both games. I still recommend making use of a controller if you can, nevertheless.
This game is lots of hrs long, action-packed, as well as loaded with loot to locate. Within a number of hours of starting, you'll have a hero powerful sufficient to slay anything in your means, all while looking totally incredible.

Thess vs Games With Meaning
There’s a meme going around that’s all about “top 5 games that were important to you as a child / in your teens” and I’m sitting here going “...well, fuck”.
Because games were not ... like ... that when I was a kid.
Please understand that I was born in the same year as a lot of things. The one most cited is Star Wars: I was born about three months before A New Hope premiered in North America. The other thing? The one that doesn’t get mentioned so much?
The launch of the Atari 2600 console.
While it wasn’t the first video game console (the first was apparently the Magnavox Odyssey), it was the second, and it basically ruled right up until Nintendo got involved in this stuff in the mid-80s. Now, thing is ... when that thing came out, I was literally an infant. I was not really able for the playing of the video games. And when I was older, that wasn’t really a thing. I mean, I had something that approximated a console, but if I remember right, it was basically a glorified tape player and it was probably way cheaper than an Atari system even in the early 80s. We were not an overly wealthy family in the early 80s.
Not to say that video games weren’t a part of my life back then. My mother was into a bowling league when I was little and while she’d bowl, I’d go dump quarters into Pac-Man and Dig Dug and Bubble Bobble and Space Invaders. I had an older half-brother who’d go to the store ostensibly for snacks but we’d blow the change on the Street Fighter game in the local depanneur (corner store). I also had a friend who a) went to the arcade with me from time to time and b) actually had a PC (it was not common in the 80s) and showed me Lemmings.
The thing was ... I didn’t own any of those. As a result, I didn’t get attached. They were things I played when I had quarters to burn - more quarters every time I turned around, in fact. Then I moved to suburban New Jersey and our corner stores didn’t have arcade machines. Hell, even when I got a NES in the late 80s/early 90s, I didn’t get attached and they weren’t overly important to me. Hell, most of them were pretty standard skill challenges - Super Mario Brothers, Duck Hunt, Paperboy ... I could say the original Final Fantasy, but honestly, my mother basically co-opted that one before I could get really invested. FF1 was the only one of my games that really had a story to any degree.
Games didn’t become important to me until they had more story. I don’t know if people understand how few games had story back then. We didn’t have the processor power. We didn’t have the technology. Things are so very different now and while I grant that some people might have found the skill challenges important to them ... I’m a girl who likes her story. When I got back into video games, I did love me some Sims, and there was Final Fantasy 11, Baby’s First MMO ... but those weren’t important to me. They didn’t matter.
Games that mattered to me? Dragon Age: Origins - release date 2009, one of the few games I played within a few months of launch. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - release date 2003, I didn’t play it until 2012 (totally spoiler-free, I might add), but that one rocked my world. Mass Effect 1 - release date 2007, another one I didn’t play until 2012. The Secret World, gone but not forgotten (DO NOT TALK TO ME ABOUT SECRET WORLD: LEGENDS - THAT GAME DOES NOT EXIST TO ME), which hit its stride for me in 2015. Star Wars: The Old Republic - mattered more to me because of the people I shared it with than for the game itself but never mind, probably started it in 2013 or so.
For some people, that is their childhood and teens. For me, it was well into my adulthood. Doesn’t make them matter any less.
Questions like that? They’re pretty age-dependent. For me, the few times I had games at all as a child or teen, they were a good way to hide from angry and/or disappointed parents. Like books, but with less story and more looking busy. Games didn’t start to matter to me until very recently. I guess that’s important, but it was the fact that there was a game to hide behind that was important, not what game it was. They only started mattering to me when there was more to it than Save Princess.

Nintendo Switch Online, 1 year in review...
Well, well, well... Nintendo Switch Online...
You’re cheap, but you’re too cheap in return sometimes. I want to talk about it and some of my frustrations about it (and not necessarily with Nintendo). To do this, I will talk about each feature seperately.
Online Play
The most obvious feature is Online Play. It went from being free to being paid, which is pretty much a problem but then the competitors do the same. Many Nintendo games do not have the most stable netplay, even though I do not have most of the problems that other people get.
I’m not going to do a P2P vs Dedicated, or rather I would like to say that people genuinely don’t understand basic netplay and are all going against P2P without knowing that some of the games that works fine are probably all running on P2P to begin with.
I’m not gonna go into the details, nor do I want to say I’m an expert, each have their own pros and cons, but I think the main issue is ultimately the netcode. Here’s hoping with GGPO being open source and free to use for professionals now, the future could be a lot brighter.
I would want Nintendo to take netcode a little more seriously and test it in homes with slower Internet. Testing it with Wi-Fi and Ethernet and everything.
Save Data Cloud
This feature technically works. You’d think it’s hard to fail, right?
Of course they did when some games just don’t provide the support for it because of fear that people may abuse it for cheating... Meh.
Nintendo uses the exemple of having a broken Switch to where this feature might come in handy. Too bad this also means completely lost saves for some of the most important games like Splatoon 2 or Animal Crossing, the latter being really annoying if you lose hundreds or even thousands of hours...
Smartphone App
This one is tough because potential was there. Truly a waste of time.
All of the main services could have just been a website that works on PC and Mobile. But I think the main issue is that people don’t really want to check stuff about their game all the time because there is simply not enough feedback.
There was actually better execution when SplatNet was a regular website accessible on every device, Super Mario Maker Bookmark website too, instead everything is stuck to an app, limiting uses.
Content should be seen from everywhere when it’s possible. Making it work behind a subscription fee was a terrible idea.
And then let’s not even talk about the voice chat. That is a truly depressing thing. Why making it stuck to mobile? I get that you don’t want the Switch to process that stuff for performance reasons but truly that stuff is supported on it too...
Special Offers
Let me list what extra stuff we got from Nintendo Switch Online:
Exclusive Splatoon 2 Gears
Tetris 99
Game Vouchers
The right to buy NES/SNES Controllers
Game Trials (for only one game)
I did not list another thing that will be its own seperate bullet point.
Tetris 99 was truly the best part of this. It’s actually a pretty darn good game. Game Vouchers could have been nice if you couldn’t get the brand new games for cheaper in physical form.
Game Trials was a thing they tested at one point, but then they just didn’t bother...
We, subscribers, don’t really get a lot of extras, do we?
My Nintendo (Bonus Rant)
Nothing has been more of a waste than My Nintendo. Gold Points finally started to be kind of useful since it became an equivalent to a cent for the Switch eShop, but that’s the only good point I could give to it.
Its execution is terrible, and unlike many people, I do not have a lot of good memories about Club Nintendo (the European one, that said), because most of the cool items we only could get the stars we needed much later and then then the item was gone. That’s literally most of my experience with Club Nintendo.
When I learned that with the North American Club Nintendo you could get virtual console games and other cool shit I was genuinely disappointed how the European one was. And I’m not mentioning how the Japanese Club Nintendo had some of the cooler things than the west ever got.
And then My Nintendo has none of the cool things from any regional Club Nintendo... what’s the plan, Nintendo? Why does this exist?
The day 3DS and Wii U will stop being supported, what will happen to the vouchers that you guys always put up? Will it become even more useless?
NES / SNES Nintendo Switch Online
Now the real meat because that’s the stuff I really would like to talk about.
You guys know how involved I am with retro Nintendo content and I can be very invested about this kind of stuff because I just love Nintendo’s games.
Unlike many people, I don’t mind the subscription aspect and the fact you don’t really own these games anymore compared to Virtual Console games. I think this has ultimately been the better thing to do. However I find many problems with the execution of it, especially in the long run.
Due to its subscription nature, I did expect it to have less games than Virtual Console. Rights have to be renegotiated, and the most I expected were Nintendo games. Turns out we got some third parties, some even high profile, pretty cool.
But there are pretty infuriating stuff, like the slow drip feed we get. I get that you want to keep interest going for these games over time but there’s a lot of problems with that entails, and that’s how most of us are frustrated that Nintendo is not using the Switch to its highest potential, and especially about having all of the Nintendo games possible in a small amount of time.
Its portable nature wants us that Nintendo puts all of the retro games as quickly as possible, we want to dedicate our time to the Switch instead of plugging the Wii and Wii U for VC games that aren’t there. We want N64, GB/C/A, GameCube, and more. We want to have Mario Party 2 netplay in an official capacity, and so on...
I noticed the potential of retro Switch Online offer when I found myself addicted to Balloon Fight. Actually a game I’ve never downloaded off ROM sites before, as I usually dismissed it as being too simple. However the game was just there and I gave it a shot. This is one of the reasons why its subscription nature didn’t mind me, it got me to spend time with some games I usually wouldn’t spend time with, especially for NES.
I want to put a list of things that I want Nintendo to do with their retro offering to bring interest, but also sustain it:
- Bigger Drips of games
This seems trivial, but keep in mind that games have to be tested before going live, we pretty much want at least 3 games per month for each console. But stuff takes time and we at least want more communication about this aspect. We just want more games.
- Localized games
This is a personal pet peeve and only works for people whose native language is not English. I do not expect of Nintendo to localize retro games, but at least to release localized ROMs of games when they exist.
I expected of them to release these:
Kirby’s Adventure, French and German versions (yes, they exist)
Super Metroid, European version (that’s a bit more controversial however...)
Zelda: A Link To The Past, French and German versions (French even has an official 60hz version)
Yoshi’s Island, European version.
I know what you could say, 50hz games suck, music is slower- Stop. My only answer is fuck you.
Also, SNES 50hz games cannot have slower music, aside from a few rare ones. If you remember games having slower music on PAL SNES you have a bad memory and mixed up with NES or Mega Drive or something.
I don’t see how, as a developer myself, a selection menu could not be implemented for selecting the language for a game. That way you let people play whatever they want, it’s less painful, everyone is happy.
I still wish for Nintendo to localize retro games however, or maybe even bring unreleased localizations of games if they approved it back then...
- Random Game of the Day / Moment
This seems like a dumb idea, but when I played Balloon Fight I noticed how Nintendo could bring attention to games that don’t necessarily get it.
When the library gets bigger, some games will be left on the side over others, a system to bring motivation to play those games, even as simple as a random game name at the top, is better than what piracy can even bring you.
Maybe you could even implement a button that selects a random game.
- Game Tweaks / Special Versions
AKA USE LUA SCRIPTS IN GAMES
Now we’re starting to get a bit on the expensive side of things.
Special Versions of games aren’t really good on NES, they’re just save states. Some are useful (Golf Course unlocks), some are amusing (Zelda), but most of them are just a save state at the end of the game.
I want them to go on the next stage of this, actually hack the games, or even scripts on top of them. You see, some emulators have scripting features that can alter the game, in ways that improves them (map on Metroid NES), or outright gameplay altering (Kirby Canvas Curse gameplay on Super Mario Bros. 3).
I gave real exemples of use, these could be used to make games easier, harder, balanced, weirder, just like another concept that Nintendo did... NES REMIX. (What a waste of a concept... This really got people into NES games.)
I wish for Nintendo to use their LUA script system already in place for the menus, for their emulator.
This could also aid in development of localization of games without altering the ROM and without space issues.
And this could aid in making SNES Mouse games to work on a touch screen and more, it’s genuinely easy to figure out I could do it myself in a day... ;)
- Shared Library of games between Japan & International
...Well all I want is that I don’t have to need to download the japanese app or the japanese to download the international app to play other games that are not present in the local library. I thought this would have been solved with Super Puyo Puyo 2 but guess not.
This could have the added bonus of japanese games on top of the american (and european?) ones.
- Game Events
Sort of an extra to game tweaks, bringing events for people to play a specific retro game and give them gold points or something. Events could have objectives, achievements, scoreboards, many things could be done here.
You could even bring in the Nintendo World Championship ROMs, other competition stuff, or even games like soundlink games from the Satellaview like BS Zelda, BS Super Mario All-Stars and so on. These games are made for competition!
This is the ultimate thing to bring people to play retro games, bring the unusual games that most people have possibly never even heard about!
- Others
Some of those bullet points don’t need a big explanation:
More Unreleased Retro Games (Japan only or even anywhere)
Localize Retro Games that were never localized (not just in english!)
Borders
Small Control Scheme Help (to compensate for lack of manuals)
5-player Netplay support for SNES (Super Puyo Puyo 2 supports 4 player)
Netplay with Global Rooms with passwords and not just stuck to friends. (This should be a thing for EVERY GAME. This could even be a Switch OS feature.)
Automatic Matchmaking for certain games?
I have also always said this: I’m interested to work with you, Nintendo, on this kind of stuff...
