I am getting back into HS because of you! I actually have been thinking about it for a bit... Something I've been feeling recently though, is the idea that my interpretations, my works, my views of these characters could not reasonably sit next to others', whose are all more nuanced, more in-depth and researched... but I really enjoy your takes, and I'm gradually understanding tjat even if I'm not a true Halwarrior, or a Jake Jingler, I can still make meaningful works with these characters even if I don't know Every detail of them or nuanced perspective on them. I suppose I feel like my output in the fandom, in relation to canon, has been lackluster! It's been almost 10 years since I got into Homestuck, and even now I blank on vital stuff... but I really appreciate your takes and art and creations, because it makes me feel more at ease and intrigued by things I don't fully comprehend (like how I've read the comic 5 times and still feel like a bucket of mud after reading the dialogue boxes more than 2 sentences LOL), rather than hesitant to create. I hope this all makes sense, it's kinda like I'm typing whatever comes to mind right now. But all in all, thank you. I've had my fair share of rough times in this fandom, but I love it dearly. And even though we don't know each other, I'm glad there is somebody like you out there. Stay strong, and have a wonderful new year.

hi thank you for taking the time to write this all out it makes me really happy to hear that you're getting back into hs :)!! i definitely know what you are feeling and often feel the same way, i see a lot of people who have been around the scene much longer than me who've done a lot of thinking & writing about the story who have much more interesting & well thought-out things to say compared to me. but i think of the two cakes theory and remember that we all have something unique to contribute! i don't really think there's such thing as a "lackluster" contribution to fandom because there's no requirement to contribute to fandom at all. even if you wanted to just sit back and see what others do, or not even engage at all, there's nothing wrong with that. this is not a class that we are trying to get a good grade in, it's a community of fans that we all engage with because it's supposed to be fun and enjoyable. i share my thoughts because i would explode if i didn't get them out and i like to draw little things because it's my way of expressing my love of this comic. even if i may disagree with people from time to time (frankly, i think my new year's resolution should be to be less of a hater), i still like to hear other people's perspectives and interpretations, and what really makes the hs fandom stand out to me is the community i'm part of where we can exchange our thoughts and ideas

I haven't seen anything so much about Beyond Canon and it's been a while since I have been into Homestuck stuff, but..I was thinking recently that even if I love shipps like Gamkar and GamTav, I almost wanted to see more like Gamrezi, idk the dynamic with the cool girl and the chill asshole was fresh, I don't think it would be necessary give us a toxic blackroom like that, when Vriska was a thing. Or something like GamNep, seemingly as everyone was so angry with Gamzee (but not blaming Dave for literally trigger the clown, lmao) but Nepeta didn't seem to actually have resentment towards him, like Equius. How would you think Gamrezi or GamNep it would worked out? I love reading your opinions, after all, big fan! Sending hugs!

I think Gamzee and Terezi definitely could have worked like how they had interacted in early Act 5. Just chill and having fun. Terezi is the wild free-spirited while Gamzee is laid back. People had assumed Gamzee and Nepeta would be this but it wasn't until Murderstuck that people changed their minds. I also believe that it was intentional on Andrew Hussie's part of Kurloz x Meulin being canon as a jab at people who try to ship Gamzee x Nepeta. One can even go the darker route that the Grand Highblood could have done something worse to the Disciple after she had watched her lover the Signless/Sufferer died. After all, she was spared only because Darkleer had pale feelings for her (which would transcend into the Meowrails we know and love). I think both those relationships can get those back by having Nepeta or Terezi realize that Gamzee is locked in his fate for Lord English and trying to pull him out. That even with the bad moments, they could give some sympathy towards the guy. Gamzee would then help Nepeta being able to show her feelings and being confident in herself for choices she makes. Gamzee may also help Terezi move on from Vriska's toxic friendship and decision because it was Vriska's choice to continue what she did. Even if there were moments of her being manipulated by Doc Scratch, the choice was still mostly on Vriska.

What would you say was the thing that really shifted your opinion on postcanon stuff? I remember reading your long form posts about it and finding them pretty eloquent and interesting given the information I had (and I admit they did nudge me to me to end up not reading the epilogues along with the sheer length and my own squeamishness, though of course you also gave them their due when you felt it was fair)

if i'm being real, it's primarily interaction with other homestuck fans - my social media spaces tend to be pretty heavily curated, i basically only follow people i trust to be intelligent, since like. there is a level of comfort and complacency with social media? i don't like following new people, i don't like unfollowing old people. so i just dont branch out that much.

but i joined the mspfa discord in........ may of last year? while i really enjoy playing the role of like, i compared myself to solaire of astora once. guy who is there to help. i enjoy doing that, there is fun in that. i have spent many hours over the past months explaining homestuck plot points in ways that basically only i would and it is largely, pearls before swine, because the fact is that people dont want to understand post-canon, they don't want to like, pick at it critically, to understand why the decisions were made, they want to hate post-canon. and this is a very critical difference between me not liking post-canon and the majority of people hating post-canon.

and there is something to be said about experiencing homestuck as it is perceived by other people, to really solidify what i liked about homestuck post-canon, because there was stuff i liked to begin with. and seeing people who hate it without good reason frustrate me! genuinely, if you had to see the same "i heard jade has a dog penis" discussions every 2 weeks from some sprout who showed up only to be mad, you would start to defend it too.

like, i actually delayed that second blog post at the time because hatred for the team was flaring up again, for whatever reason, i don't even remember. but i remember putting it off because i didn't want to contribute to people who were blindly angry about homestuck^2

there are reasons to not like post-canon, lord knows there are plenty. i actually stand by basically everything i said about it not actually working and the times where it goes too far. in the second blog post, not the first one. but like, there is a total and all-encompassing difference in what the conversation is, "yeah, the meat and candy thing doesnt really work and dirks graphic suicide is ill-considered at best" doesnt matter at all when the level people are operating on is "say a plot point as a joke, make people mad, have fun circlejerking over how bad it is"

part of it is also that in the process of writing my own comic, it kind of comes with the territory to be less precious about the characters. like, team slime, my home discord server, watches movies every saturday. for a while, our theme was musicals, and eventually, we watched hamilton. and i realized that lin manuel miranda writes alexander hamilton in the exact way i am always afraid i am writing jane and vriska, like. just. truly relentlessly protective of them. and so being less precious about these characters means recognizing the flaws therein, not being afraid to write them just being kind of disasters. i still am pretty precious about them, but its a work in progress. you gotta get your hands dirty with them, and that puts it in context of respecting when others do the same

like, there are still a lot of really glaring flaws in post-canon, dont get me wrong, but theyre not insurmountable, and it helps to have spaces like burning down the house for me to express directly like. what i wanted out of homestuck. post-canon is not what i want it to be, but when has homestuck ever given anyone what they wanted without any complications whatsoever

and i think it is genuinely capable of being extremely good - this recent update (yiffy overlooking the rosemary drama) is extremely choice! i genuinely love how everyone involved is characterized, the panels are flashy, it puts to bed really stupid shit, like. its unbelievably fucking good how the problem kanaya has isnt "rose had another kid with jade in secret, our marriage is in shambles" but "jane knows about this kid", like. the absence of infidelity conflict is refreshing and says so much about everyone involved. and i have been thinking nonstop about how rose and jades daughters takes after caliborn of all characters. like. "you hope they eat each other alive" with the perspective of like, a caliborn grin is such an INSANE direction to take yiffy! holy shit! its awesome!!!!!!!!

A brief introduction

Hi. My name's Bobby. (She/her.) You may know me for running my inexplicably widely known Archie Sonic blog Thanks Ken Penders, or for making the game Super Lesbian Animal RPG. Maybe you just know me as a furry artist. I wear a lot of hats!

While it's not one of the main interests I'm known for, I've been a fan of Spider-Man for most of my life, ever since the fateful weekend in 2002 when my dad decided to rent a certain Sam Raimi movie. He passed on his love of the character to me. Spider-Man remains my favorite superhero to this day, even in an age when MCU fatigue is really setting in. My tastes in fiction (and, by extension, my own writing) were surely influenced by the mix of fantastical and relatable elements found in Peter Parker's stories. The way he can go on these adventures swinging all around New York and then be like "shit, I forgot to pay my rent for my hellhole apartment." As my dad put it, unlike a lot of other superheroes, under the mask Spider-Man's just a normal guy from Queens.

I'm not the most hardcore fan, sure, but I've enjoyed plenty of takes on the character across different storytelling mediums. Movies, cartoons, video games, etc. That is, with one notable exception. The original comics. The Earth-616 Spider-Man comics that have been going for 60 years now. Even though I was the rare 21st century elementary schooler with a comic shop pull list, the mainline Marvel universe seemed completely impenetrable to me. I didn't know where to start, and every year I put it off, the backlog only grew larger and larger. I did read the first few volumes of Ultimate Spider-Man in middle school because my local library had them, but that was about it.

Recently, though, being in a Spidey mood thanks to the Insomniac games and Spider-Verse movies, I had a crazy idea. What if I just... read the main universe Spider-Man comics from the start?

I've read plenty of other long comics. Manga series that span hundreds of chapters. All sorts of Sonic and Transformers comics. I read all of Homestuck. I'm a One Piece fan, for Christ's sake. It can't be that hard, right?

i dont really kniw how to word what im thinking so im like. going to type it as im thinking. but i wanted to make a real genuine post explaining my behavior over the past year, because ive been a dick there is no avoiding it!! this post is going to be about how ive acted from june up until now. im mostly going to be explaining the situations and apologizing. if you see this please feel free to share it around, i know it most likely will not reach alot of people because i have like. a loot of people blocked. and alot of people have me blocked. idk please share this ok thank u

back in june 2022 (specifically one year tomorrow, june 16th) i got like. really worked up after i had foundout that most of my adult mutuals (and some people i followed) were drawing hlvrai nsfw! the only post i had made about it (at least from what i remember) is liiike a not Kind post that basically said "hey if u like hlvrai nsfw please block me i thought that was common sense". after i posted this a large hlvrai artist (either by chance or caused by me) posted like "hey if u shit on hlvrai porn ur homophobic! sex is an important part of gay relationships etc etc"

this caused a Massive out break of discourse over hlvrai nsfw and me getting alot of adults in my inbox being weird towards me. here i feel its important to mention that:

when i was 12, i was around Ex Friends that posted a lot of porn of media i liked. even though most of them were teenagers and not that much older than me it Greatly Impacted Me and how i act, both related to what i saw and how i was treated

i used twitter from ages 12-15 (recently left) and you know how they handle conflict there. its not good

i dont think either of these excuse how i acted (but they may explain it)

the combined pressure of getting a bunch of adults in my anons being (from my perspective) really weird about this 14 year old kid who doesnt want porn artists to interact, and the unhealed trauma of Being Exposed To Homestuck Porn When I Was 12 (a devastating situation that everyone goes though all the time) i didnt really. handle it in a Good Way. which Means i sent horrible anon hate to people.i dont clearly remember if i made alot of public posts about the situation at the time (beyond answering the anons i was getting) but if i did im very very VERY sorry.

i feel like. alot of how i acted during this time (june-early august, mostly) was extremely Dickish and rude. as much as i justify or explain why i acted the way i did, i was still causing issues and handling the situation in a way that was unhealthy for not just myself but for everyone else around me. for this i really genuinely do apologize as much as i can, to the people ive hurt (melonsharks, xenodogz, many other artists) and to the people who were annoyed by me rehashing 3 year old drama. ever since the situation i have been working towards learning to block people and move on if they make content that makes me feel nauseous.

As for how ive acted in recent months, mostly over characterization, im not going to pretend that im already a new person. because im not! as much as i say im trying to be less of an asshole im just Not. it takes effort that i feel like im not putting in.

for those who just Dont look at my pages often enough, i will occasionally make posts about how hlvrai fans treat or characterize the. characters. and lets behonest these posts are really rude and ive been working on at LEAST being more vague or keeping it in private or like. just Not Posting it. but of course i HAVENT done all of those things! ive been really unvague!

ive posted direct screenshots of authors writing (someone younger than me, ive recently learned) to shit on it for being mischaracterized. i should Not have done that. at the very least i should have kept my thoughts to myself, not even shared with my friends.

after reading how other authors and artists have felt about the things ive said, and looking at the way ive come to think of other artists or authors in the community, ive realized that even though i thought i was targetting mischaracterization and poor treatment of the characters, i was harming and discouraging artists and authors who are still learning and growing as creators.

for this, im VERY very sorry to all of the artists and writers ive hurt or discouraged with my posts. i want to personally apologize to joyflameball, for publicly posting about and hating on your writing and the discouragement i caused as a result. i should have never put mischaracterization over your own feelings, and i definitely should not have put your work on blast, especially because we are (i think) around the same age. i will be trying as best as i can to deconstruct the way ive come to think of other creators in this community and support other creators as best i can.

I don't think any of us could have possibly expected this, but Homestuck^2, the (much-maligned) Homestuck sequel, is back.

And to top that off, it's looking good.

James Roach, who composed many of the tracks for Homestuck's more recent projects and was generally one of the few well-known people still openly associated with the IP in any official capacity, has formed the Homestuck Independent Creative Union, or HICU, with Andrew Hussie's blessing. Dedicated to finally completing the long-abandoned HS^2 project (now rebranded as simply Homestuck: Beyond Canon) as well as working on even more Homestuck projects in the future(!!!), HICU would appear to be the greatest hope that Homestuck has for the future.

Now, I'm going to preface this by saying two things. First: I have only been involved in the Homestuck fandom since the beginning of this year, and I only finished the original comic last month. I am by no means a long-time fandom member, nor do I have the same experiences with the fandom that many other people have had. Second: I have not read/played the Homestuck Epilogues, Homestuck^2, or any meaningful amount of Hiveswap Friendsim or Pesterquest. While I am familiar with a couple concepts from post-canon Homestuck, I am unfamiliar with any of the works in their entirety.

That being said, I still want to discuss my opinion on the sudden return of post-canon, and what I think the future of Homestuck may be. My time as a Homestuck may have so far been relatively brief, but the comic has made an incredible impact on my life. HS holds a special place in my heart, and even if I'm not the most well-educated fan I still want to put my opinion out there.

I am, to put it in simple terms, cautiously optimistic about the return of Homestuck^2. To my knowledge, HS^2 has so far been a complete and total trainwreck. Now, I'm not personally in a place to judge the work: after all, I haven't read the damn thing. But if what I've heard is true, then HS^2 seems almost irredeemably bad. There's a chance, however, that the HICU will be able to turn this around. By taking the writing in a new direction, proving to the fandom that they know what they're doing, and trying their best to fix this, they might just be able to make this work.

James Roach and the rest of the HICU seem genuinely very passionate about Homestuck. It's clear that they love this universe and only want the best for it; and I think that's the most important thing.

If there's one thing that has defined the Homestuck fandom for the past few years, it's been cynicism. You'd be hard-pressed to find a single fan who thought Homestuck had any sort of future ahead of it outside of Hiveswap; post-canon was practically dead, Andrew Hussie had long since moved on to greener, clown-filled pastures, and a large, faceless corporation with seemingly no interest in the IP had become the publisher. Suffice to say, it wasn't a good time to be a Homestuck fan.

But now, with the formation of the HICU, there's something the Homestuck fandom hasn't seen in a long, long time: hope. There is a chance, however slim, that Homestuck will be getting new, well-written, well-characterized content. Homestuck has a future, it has a chance at redemption!

I just hope that James Roach and the rest of the HICU don't fuck this up. Maybe, just maybe, if we're fucking lucky, Homestuck can leave this years-long slump.

Alright, I'm done rambling. I've got a lot of stuff to read: after all, I don't want to miss the return of Homestuck, no matter how it turns out!

This is a post mostly for me.

Just reflecting on my very FIRST karfef fan art I did in July 29, 2013 and this last one I recently did almost exactly a year later in July 15, 2023. It was completely unintentional! The recent one got a little boost of notes and I ended up looking at my karfef tag in my blog just to reminiscence.

It’s been literally a decade since I’ve been enjoying drawing homestuck, maybe a bit more. And it’s definitely been twice that since I’ve started liking art in general. Sometimes I don’t feel like I’ve actually gotten any better at art, but things like this do remind me that I have gotten better even if I don’t immediately see it.

I may never make art a career but I really do enjoy drawing and my heart is full when I make drawings I am happy with. Doesn’t matter how old I get, I don’t think I’ll ever stop.

scratch said his lessons emphasized obedience, mastery of the clockwork majyyks, and (of course) being locked in a room. but these lessons (aside from the locked in the room part obvi) would have been the only socialization little mai ever got, and there is no world for her to explore and learn about through experience so literally almost everything about anything that she knew would’ve had to have been taught to her by scratch. so those lessons probably included a bunch of other stuff as well

okay sorry i think i started a little far off my b >.< but to answer your first question: yeah sure! it would be a good chance to stretch her brain muscles while also being unfun. seems very on brand

only communicating (or being talked at by, there doesn’t seem to be much real communication between the two) with doc scratch probably lends her a nicely well rounded vocabulary in that tongue, or at least a knack for deciphering meaning from context clues. i’ve most likely said this somewhere before but i tend to think mai had trouble learning to speak but that’s only tangentially related lol!!

as for literacy. i guess the question is what language? probably the one doc scratch speaks but what language IS that lol. like everyone in hs speaks english despite there apparently being an alternian language? urghh anyway considering mai’s job takes her everywhere and everywhen, realistically literacy probably. doesn’t help with her work. but neither does doc scratch’s language so. maybe she is literate and doc scratch sometimes lets her read any books that might be in the apartment?

i can’t say i have a real opinion on her literacy level. if she can read and write, it’s probably not her strong suit? if she can’t, cool. she’s jared, 1900, never learned how to read. literacy, while helpful, isn’t necessary for the aforementioned intellectual development. but it would be really, really helpful since, again, there’s no way for her to learn things through experience. but then again if there’s nothing/very little for her to read.. the spiral

re: work her role doesn’t require strategic manipulation or a delicate touch (that’s doc scratch) so how much would really benefit her jobwise beyond those obedience and majyyks lessons ?? that’s why they were emphasized ig..?

but mai did have an ENTIRE childhood so i’d say anything is fair game!! there’s a lot to think about when trying to reconcile an at least mostly normally developed girl with her being raised in a very small world that would grow stale quickly, especially without anything new/stimulating. there must have been SOME enrichment in her enclosure and your ideas are a fun way to go about that!! pls don’t let anything i’ve said here make you think otherwise lol bc the things you mentioned are the Worst in a very mundane way that fit extremely well into what we already know

every now and then ill come back to this blog because its the only place where i can criticize homestuck and have people listen to it without screaming, "gurhhh ummm u just hate cuz um um um.. your.. your transphobic! homophobic!"

i just wanted to say homestuck fans have some of the worst humor ive ever seen, ESCPECIALLY the homestuck team. it feels so, milk toast. i get a insane vibe of old person who is trying so hard to make funny memes.

one of the comics was just,, vriska saying "gay" over and over? its not the fact that its a gay joke, cuz i think lgbtq jokes can be funny. but its just so uncreative here. it feels like laziness on full display. repeat gay over and over.... i dont really get it i guess.

or the general obsession with lgbtq identity in homestuck fandom. again, out of context this sounds like homophobic or transphobic bs but its moreso i just feel a insane dissapointment how storytelling is not valued anymore in this fandom. you just slap a label on a character and thats as far as content goes now a days.

its been like that for years as well. how many variations of different genders and sexualities until we get.. some creative headcanons? a creatively made comic? some storytelling that fleshes out the characters deeper?

the thing is people could make interesting stuff with lgbtq identities too but they never do. the bar is so fucking low man.

TLDR; homestuck fandom is the epitome of anti-creativity.

Yeah, that Vriska gay jokes was from the official Homestuck Independent Creative Union team that was posted on Patreon, drawn by floralmarsupial. It sucks hard. Someone said it looks like Vriska trying to gaslight Dave to thinking he is gay (for Karkat). It should feel wrong, but LGBT and Davekat fans don't care. Bullying and grooming are the same kind of definition in their eyes. Most of the humor in modern Homestuck plays it safe. They don't want to offend others if they try to do edgey, dark, or slapstick humor. So the go-to kind is often the hashtag relatable humor. But even then, that could be taken as offensive by someone. Even the pool of latest Internet memes can be hard if most of it sucks for what's currently popular or can't be portrayed in certain forms of styles. Simple text over image is not the same as trying to say it in a speech bubbles at times. Sudden deep fry visual humor won't pull off well if previous art styles had them looking clean and crisp at first. Maybe it can pull off well, but the execution of it mostly sucks in recent times by modern generation. LGBT themes really have taken over priorities in story telling, even when it is not involved or that important in the narrative. Like how does being trans gonna help save the world from impending doom from a big bad that is destined to appear in every existing timeline? Can we also get headcanons that may expand on the characters interest? Like if Eridan is interested in military war history, would that extend to movies or video games he could watch/play? It could get people to look more into other things they never thought they would be interested in. What about Dave's interest in collecting dead things? How about him having a fucking dinosaur collection in his house because it is cool? Showing his silly side a little? Or have Jade's gardening being taught to the other citizens of Earth, be the one that ends world hunger since plantations would be possible even in places that shouldn't be able to grow certain types of food?

Team RWBY's Extended Zodiac Signs: My Thoughts

Hey, some stuff happened today and I want to take my mind off it for a bit, so I'm gonna try something that's different than what I usually do but have kind of wanted to try out for a while. I don't know if I'll do anything else like this or if this is a one off thing, but it just seemed like a fun way to write down some thoughts on some characters through the lens of a particular medium.

For those who don't know already, the Extended Zodiac is an extension of the constellation zodiacs (Aries, Taurus, Gemini, etc) made for a video game called Hiveswap, which is a spinoff of a webcomic called Homestuck (which you may or may not have heard of). The constellation zodiacs are combined with two other elements- Lunar Sway and Aspect- to create 288 unique signs, each of which offers a more particular explanation of your personality and thought patterns. Whether you think the zodiac is a bunch of hoopla or the absolute bomb, it can be fun to take the quiz (linked here) and learn more about yourself and find your True Sign. Or do what I'm doing, and take fictional character's birthdays and personalities to figure out what categories they fall into. Or create a trollsona for them.

And the other half of this, for those who don't know: RWBY (pronounced "ruby") is an animated series following the members of the titular team RWBY: Ruby Rose, Weiss Schnee, Blake Belladonna, and Yang Xiao Long, a group of young women who are preparing to become huntresses, which are heroes who protect the world from the dangerous creatures of Grimm (keep in mind, this synopsis is for the first volume/season, and the show has recently finished showing its ninth; the story has changed VERY much from volume one. You can watch the very first trailer for the show here)

Anyway, relatively recently (as in September of three years ago), the official RWBY Twitter/X account announced the official birthdays of our heroines (linked here), and given the personalities of the characters, their birthdays were very... interesting, to say the least. So I've decided to look into their Extended Zodiacs to find out more about them. It's possible this has already been done by someone else, in a way more detailed (read: better) way, but like I said: this is mostly for me, to get my mind off of some stuff right now.

So without further ado, here's my thoughts on the Extended Zodiac of Team RWBY, below the cut! (Spoilers for RWBY and Homestuck, of course!)

Ruby Rose - October 31

Scorus - Sign of the Victorious (Scorpio, Prospit, Breath)

Played for a joke, but very official: Ruby's birthday is the same day as Halloween, making her a Scorpio. This surprised me, considering that the Extended Zodiac is quick to tell you that Scorpios "are the ones to watch... they have the potential to do the most good, but also cause the worst harm."

Of course, most people are quick to jump on the "worst harm" aspect of Scorpios, given the reputations of Homestuck's Scorpio characters (...Does this make Ruby a Vriska?) So what's going on here? Was the choice of birthday simply a joke that got cemented in canon?

Not necessarily. Throughout the show, and especially more recent volumes, Ruby has always done what she believes is best for the good of her friends and the world, with incredibly varied results. Whether she intended it or not, Ruby has been at the center of some great goods and terrible harms, which fits very snuggly with her Scorpio sign. Scorpios are also "all in" types, "willing to throw themselves into work, play, and everything in between", and you can easily point to many scenes throughout the series to prove how this fits Ruby (a fan favorite, and a personal favorite, is the food fight scene from Volume 2).

Okay, so Ruby's a Scorpio, but that's not all this is. This is where things get a little fuzzy, because some people's interpretation of her character are vastly different from what I'm about to talk about. But let's start with her Lunar Sway: for Ruby, I chose Prospit.

Some people hear Prospit and think "ah, yes, the optimistic and silly one". But Prospit (and Derse for that matter) aren't nearly that simple. Prospit Dreamers are described as "reactive and intuitive... making decisions (based on) gut instinct and whatever emotions they are experiencing in the moment". They do tend to be optimistic, but the site is quick to point out that it's a FLEXIBLE optimism, meaning it can be prone to dwindling or growing stronger depending on the situation.

Ruby is creative and emotional, (and yes, optimistic). It can be argued that many of her choice were based on what emotions she was feeling at the time of the choice, ranging from her choice to defend Pyrrha Nikos from the Grimm even after her accidental involvement in Penny's first death, to choosing to lie to Ironwood about the lamp after the truths it revealed about Ozpin. Ruby cries a lot on the show (many of the characters do, and really, can you blame them?), but she's also quick to smile and laugh and offer encouragement (and in volume nine, her patience wears out and she gets angry, which leads to a lot of rash words and choices in itself).

There can also be some argument for symbolic representation, too; namely that Ruby's silver eyes can flash a light that scatters the Grimm (to ashes). Prospit being the "light" moon, pressed right against the bright glow of Skaia, is a pretty fitting choice for someone who holds the powers of the God of Light. Fun stuff!

Now that leaves the last part of the Extended Zodiac, and easily the most debatable part, mostly because there are twelve different choices based on personality, which again, can be interpreted differently from person to person. For Ruby, I ended up with Breath, though my other choices were Hope, Blood, and Life, for varying reasons.

The typical personality traits for a Breath player are: motivated, adaptable, forward thinking (positive), and volatile, gullible, and avoidant (negative). Being the leader of Team RWBY, Ruby has had to learn to motivate herself and others towards their common goals, be able to adapt to changes both on the battle field and in her relationships, and has spent most volumes looking forward (a very famous line by the creator of the show, Monty Oum) to what can be done next; how to next achieve her goals. But she can also be gullible, either for something innocent like a snide comment from Weiss (typically in the earlier volumes) or something much more dangerous, like Cinder's (in my opinion) not so secret infiltration of Beacon Academy. Then in the most recent volume, when Ruby loses her cool, the other characters would probably call her outburst "volatile", here meaning "a rapid and unexpected change, typically for the worse" (though really, we all knew it was a long time coming).

There's also that little hidden bit of lore about the aspects: Breath and Blood players tend to be considered leaders, for one reason or another (this doesn't mean that all "leader" characters are either Blood or Breath, necessarily, but it's a fairly consistent pattern in Homestuck, with John and Karkat being the unofficial/official leaders of their friends). Breath players in particular "will routinely be surprised that others look up to... them". This can be seen with Ruby's surprise at being chosen as the leader of Team RWBY by Ozpin in Volume 1, and later on by characters like Blake and Jaune, with Blake in particular holding great respect for Ruby as a leader.

And technically, there's one more thing; a fourth part to choosing someone's true sign: their "Word". I don't think this is officially a major part of the Extended Zodiac, but each sign is given their own word that represents them, a sort of "title" in its own right, and as you saw at the top, the "Word" for a Scorpio, Prospit, and Breath combination is: "The Victorious."

Victory is in a simple soul, indeed.

Weiss Schnee - May 15

Tauries - Sign of the Unsatisfied (Taurus, Derse, Time)

Funny story: it turns out that Weiss' birthday is very close to mine! I'm also a Taurus! I'll admit, I wasn't expecting Weiss to be a Taurus, though after comparing the details to what Weiss is like, I can see the connections.

The opening lines of the "Taurus" explanation are what really caught my eye for Weiss: they have a "warm and generous disposition, though you might not accuse them of it the first time you meet. They (can be) withdrawn and slow to open up... (they can) come off as arrogant and cold, like they think they are too good for everyone." That's basically Weiss' whole character arc in the early volumes! Weiss spends her early screen time living up to her nickname "Ice Queen", acting like a spoiled rich girl with a heart as cold as ice ("acting" might be putting it gently). But over time, she grows and learns along with her teammates and friends, showing off her warmer, gentler side in the later volumes.

Another thing to note is that Taurus' can be hedonistic, filling their homes with beautiful things if they have the means. No one's got an eye for luxurious items like the Ice Queen herself!

Next up is her Lunar Sway, which was a pretty obvious choice for me. Derse dreamers are skeptics, dissatisfied with almost everything in their lives. "Rebellion is in their blood... whether they are fighting back against a fascist dictatorship or the most recent trend in casual footwear." Again, Weiss' whole character arc! Despite being "born with all that (she) need(s), (her) comforts all guaranteed", Weiss is rebel through and through. Whether she's pinning her hair up asymmetrically, singing a rock opera rejection of her father's ways, or straight up disobeying and bending some rules to accomplish the team's goals, Weiss rebels in pretty much every way she can. Her shrewd and calculating mind doesn't hurt, either, leading to a perfectionist attitude and an aversion to unfamiliar situations that is very common for Derse Dreamers.

Now for her aspect. I kind of wanted her to be a Heart player, since it would fit with her theme of "Who am I, I'm the loneliest of all", but it didn't fit quite right, so I ended up with something more straightforward: Time.

Practically going hand in hand with Derse, "those bound to the aspect of time are fighters, full stop." They hate sitting still and looking pretty, and would much rather do anything and everything they can to fix a problem. Sound familiar? Weiss' personality fits pretty well here: she can be very empathetic to her friends and will relentlessly do her best to solve a problem (in particular, that brief scene from Volume 2 where she stubbornly tries to get a flower in a vase to stand up straight comes to mind). But of course, speaking of the earlier volumes, we get some of her worse traits: she can be ruthless to those she deems unworthy, gets very defensive of herself and her family name, even though she's aware of some of the less-than-stellar things her father's done, and can get impulsive when she's angry (Volume 1 is a big part of this).

Then of course, there's her Word: the Unsatisfied. That basically describe Weiss' whole arc: dissatisfied with the comforts and seeming perfection of her family, aware of the misdeeds done by her father, and aiming to do better, be better, Weiss fights to turn wrongs into rights, and won't be satisfied until everything's just so.

Blake Belladonna - January 19

Caprittarius - Sign of the Rift (Capricorn, Derse, Void)

In a world where some consider her only half a person, Blake is actually the highest ranking character on the hemospectrum (and ironically, Ice Queen Weiss is the lowest). I wasn't sure what I thought Blake would be, but it wasn't a Capricorn. But then I did a deeper dive, and things make a little more sense!

Capricorns are workaholics, stubborn and determined to reach their goal, their way. It can be difficult to change their minds, whether it's a political choice or a preference in restaurants. All of the characters in RWBY work hard, but you could argue that Blake's been working hard for the longest. Her younger life is marked with a stubborn need to bring equality and peace to the Faunus, and she continues to show that stubborn loyalty to who she is in later volumes, too (think of the scene in Volume 9 when the tree smoke's illusion suggests she could choose to be either a cat OR a human). One of the biggest things about Blake's zodiac, though, is her dedication to her goals and her relationships: "utterly, and without hesitation". (Her promise to Yang in particular comes to mind).

Next is her moon, which is fairly easy to pick: Derse. Yes, there's her rebellious streak, joining a revolution to fight for rights, even if not everything they did was legal, but it's more about Blake's thought process for me. Derse Dreamers are "great problem solvers, facing conflicts head-on with shrewd, calculating minds". Knowledge and problem solving is a big thing for Blake, be it from the books she reads or applying what she knows to strange situations (such as making the connection between the Ever After in Volume 9 to Alyx's story).

Now her aspect... I really wanted her to be a Light player, mostly because it would be a perfect foil to her color scheme, but as fitting as the aspect would have been... the Word didn't fit right. A Capripia (Capricorn, Derse, Light) is referred to as "the Brusque", a word that means "abrupt or offhand in speech or manner". Blake isn't afraid to say what she thinks, but something didn't sit right with me there. Blake typically puts a lot of thought into her words (I imagine she has to, being a member of a revolutionary organization and all). She's straightforward, not "abrupt". So, as fitting as Light was for her, I decided to look elsewhere. (Mind was a close second, but again, the word didn't fit).

Finally, I ended up with Void. Sure, haha, the character with the black color scheme gets the Aspect of darkness, but it's much more than that. A void player values potential, seeing possibilities where others see nothing. "A blank page, an empty canvas, that's what the Void-bound live for". More importantly, though, a Void player tends to cast doubt on things that are considered fact. What's a better fit for a revolutionary than that? Especially during the earlier volumes, Blake casted a lot of doubt on the status quo of several characters, namely Weiss and Ruby. For Weiss, casting doubt on Weiss' certainty that all Faunus are evil, and for Ruby, casting doubt on Ruby's ideal dream of becoming a hero like in fairytales.

And, of course, there's her personality traits: wise, intuitive, and vibrant at her best. Bookishness aside, Blake's done a lot for someone her age, and has some experience to back up her knowledge, even if some of it was skewed at one point or another. Despite her more withdrawn nature, she can be a pretty vibrant and happy person, too (waving a flag for the team in Volume 1, getting excited and a bit silly over tuna), and her experience gives her a good bit of intuition to utilize, too. Then the less positive traits: Blake was pretty dismissive and apathetic in the earlier volumes, as the "boring bookworm" type character. Later on, she was shown to be indecisive, leaving everyone behind without an explanation after the fall of Beacon (I interpret her departure as an inability to decide to face her past with her friends, especially in the wake of Yang losing her arm, though I'd understand if people made differing arguments).

Finally, the main reason I chose Blake's True Sign, her Word: "the Rift". Blake is very much known for the rifts she has a tendency to leave in groups she's been a part of. She created a rift between herself and her parents by sticking with the White Fang, even when they started being less peaceful. Then she created a rift between her and her past, hoping to escape the people and things she was a part of. Later, she brings a rift between Ruby and Yang, by leaving when Yang was at her lowest, which in turn lead to Yang not joining Ruby for her Volume 4 journey with the remnants of JNPR. Later again, Blake created a rift between Adam and the White Fang (though really, that was Adam's fault). It's practically Blake's bread and butter.

Yang Xiao Long - July 28

Lecer - Sign of the Loyalist (Leo, Prospit, Blood)

Hotter than the sun in the middle of July, Yang is a Leo! I figured someone like Yang would be a summer child, so Leo was a choice I was prepared for. It's a little easier to find connections when you were already expecting a certain option.

Leos are described as agreeable, lucky, generous, and a little bossy, which is already a fitting start for Yang (at least, in the earlier volumes). Yang is quick with affirmation and affection for people she cares about, while still being a domineering girlboss when she's on the hunt for important information (her trailer is easily a prime example of this.) Admittedly, her luck runs out pretty quickly in Volume 3, and while a typical Leo would ride out a rough patch fairly quickly, it takes at least a few months for Yang to get back up, armed and ready. But she does get back up, and that's more than some people can say after a traumatic experience like losing your arm! Especially for someone as fist oriented (or should I say, handy) as Yang!

Leos can also be known to hold a grudge, which is another factor of Yang's long recovery time. Not only had she lost her arm, she lost her partner and friend Blake without so much as a goodbye, and it took until the end of Volume 5 at MINIMUM (I say closer to the end of Volume 6) to forgive her and reach an understanding.

Surprisingly, picking Yang's Lunar Sway was the most difficult one for Team RWBY. Yes, Prospit is the obvious choice, being the golden moon and all, but for most of the earlier volumes, Yang was stuck in the past due to her mother disappearing, and Derse Dreamers are very much about analyzing the past. Eventually, though, Prospit won out, because Yang finally decided to stop looking for answers from her mom in Volume 5, instead living in the present with the family she chose with her sister and her friends. Yang's slightly more capricious attitude (a word meaning "sudden changes in moods or behavior"; think of how quick she can fly into a rage when her hair gets pulled in the earlier volumes!) is also fitting for a Prospit Dreamer. So there you go.

Technically, I think Time is a better fit for Yang than anything, but I kind of wanted to give each character their own aspect (which isn't realistic, of course, though we've never once seen an official Homestuck session with multiples of the same Aspect). After hunting around for a while (Rage was a very tempting choice), I ended up deciding on Blood for Yang. There are lots of good points here! Blood players "draw their strength from bonds, from the trust and camaraderie that blooms among a group of people who share a single vision". With Team RWBY in particular making special attack combinations out of the unique relationships between each member (such as Freezer Burn for Yang and Weiss, or Bumblebee for Yang and Blake), I think I can safely say that all of these characters draw strength from their relationships. Yang in particular, though, noticeably has a private moment alone with each of her team members. For Blake, it was in Volume 2, when Yang explained her journey to find her mom in order to convince Blake to rest. For Weiss, in Volume 5, Yang opened up to her in private about her feelings on Blake's apparent abandonment. Yang and Ruby likely had many moments like this, being sisters and all, though my mind in particular goes to volume 8, when the two talked about the Grimm Beast with silver eyes and their own separate failures and successes on their individual missions (The RWBPN and ORYJ arcs, though I'm sure there's a better name for them than that).

Finally, her personality traits lend themselves pretty well to being a Blood player, too: Yang is charismatic, uplifting, and magnetic, even to her enemies (again, the Yellow Trailer), and still able to crank out some one liners even when fighting dangerous enemies ("I! HOPE! YOU'RE! HUNGRY!" from Volume 1 and "I'm not done with you yet!" from Volume 9). Her lowest moments are good examples of a Blood player's less positive traits, too: especially during Volume 5 (I'm not counting Volume 4 because she was in her own house that whole volume), she can be sullen and set in her ways, having this sort of dull expression when dealing with anything less than what she deems important to her, even during the fight with the bandits in the woods. She's occasionally a bit unkind, too, getting a bit snippy and impatient when things don't go well. It works out!

And now, my final point: Yang's Word is: "the Loyalist", which is pretty darn fitting for her, I think. Yang is intensely loyal to all her friends, and while she may need a break every now and then to do her own thing (looks at Volume 8), she always returns to support her loved ones in their fight against the darkness. Something interesting to note is how a loyalist tends to be loyal to the status quo, typically in a government type situation. I guess that would make her friendships and love her status quo? It's something to think about.
