Diary of a Junebug
Escaping the summer heat by camping out in the snowy mountains of Montberry Peaks
When the dead of summer gets to you, just take up to some snowy mountains! But seriously, this summer heat and humidity has not been good for my health. I think my body tends to run hot, and throw in humidity being a trigger for my asthma - not a good combination. On top of not being able to catch my breath, I just have no energy in general. So I gotta do something about that.
And now we’re out in the mountains with Estella and Lumine, enjoying the refreshing cold air and starry, starry nights. It’s not like frigid or anything, more like late fall/early winter kind of temperatures where the air is cool and crisp but you won’t be freezing as long as you have some light layers on.
Of course, I will take any opportunity to show off one of my handknitted cardigans since most of them are best suited for this kind of weather. Although a warm and chunky sweater sounds nice and cozy, I find myself gravitating towards knits that can be worn for most of the year, particularly garments made from a DK weight yarn or lighter, especially cardigans because they’re just so versatile.
I mean, I would love to knit up a big, oversized, chunky, and warm sweater one day - if I ever find the right yarn that screams for a garment like that - but it’s not high up on my list. I seem to be on a cardigan kick right now, which makes sense because it’s summer and the last thing I think most people would want to make is a sweater. Even in a snowy place like this I feel like bringing a fall/winter knit would be out of place.
Besides, I have a project that’s starting to drag after a strong start - a combination of sleeve island and brioche being tedious. I didn’t find it as much of an issue when it’s only a couple sections while cables in between kept things interesting. However, the sleeves are all brioche, so it’s very slow growing. Plus, it’s worked in the round, so I have to pay attention to whether I’m knitting or purling, which took some getting used to.
I’m hoping to power through and finally finish this damn sleeve, which probably won’t take took long now that I’m about 3/4 of the way there. Then I’m not sure if I’ll work the button band just to break things up because I’m not really looking forward to the second sleeve.
This cabled cardigan really is a labor of love. Maybe I was a bit ambitious in making this my first big project with cables, but I just couldn’t resist! Along with cables, it also involves twisted stitches which create this circle chain motif, and the brioche of course. And it was my first time doing a charted pattern, which also took some time for me to learn.
So it was a huge leap out of my comfort zone - in a good way, for the most part. I’m very happy with how even my cables have turned out. The twisted stitches, I clearly messed up in many spots, but after frogging so many times, I just let them be when they became less frequent. Same for the cables I twisted the wrong way. Mistakes are part of the process after all, and most of them aren’t that noticeable compared to the rest of the garment.
Hiking out in Montberry has been pretty chill and the crisp air has done wonders for my lungs. It feels so great to be outdoors and not be out of breath all the time. The heat and humidity back home has gotten so bad that there were times when I had to use my inhaler more than once, which is not good. At least I’m back to normal out here, so it looks like I’m not heading towards an exacerbation, something I definitely want to avoid.
Lumine’s here for similar reasons - humidity really is one of asthma’s worst enemies. She and Estella have another reason to come up here too as they have a friend who just moved to the village nearby. Along with it being a housewarming party, they’re also celebrating an engagement and a finalized adoption. So we spent a couple days in the village for that as well as do some sightseeing.
The newly engaged couple, Nolwenn and Loeva, are quite familiar with the village and mountains by now. Loeva has some relatives who live nearby, which is one of the reasons why they chose to settle down here. They’ve had their eye on this house for almost a year, but it needed a lot of fixing up before they could settle in, so that’s where Estella came in. The house is about 85% complete with all the important stuff like electricity and plumbing all set, while most of the remaining work has more to do with aesthetics and decorating. Sure, there’s still quite a bit to do, but the important thing is getting settled now that almost everything’s up and running.
Loeva introduced us to her cousins Lia, Rivelin, and Dewi, who then gave us some good recommendations on where to explore. She’s close to them because her family would often spend the summer here and they always have a great time. Then when she started bringing Nolwenn over, they immediately took her in as one of the family, so it’s like she’s known them forever when it’s actually about 5 years or so.
Along with Nolwenn, Loeve and her family also took in Nolwenn’s stepsister Clervie with open arms as well. Had she lived, she would be joining them here in Montberry too. However, Nolwenn has successfully won custody of Clervie’s daughter, Solenna after avoiding what could have been a drawn out battle against Clervie’s mother. That whole thing is another reason why Nolwenn’s looking forward to starting a new chapter in her life up in Montberry with Loeve.
Unlike Loeve, Nolwenn was never really that close with her family. Though, she says it’s nothing compared to Clervie and her family. Nolwenn’s mother was married to Clervie’s father for three years - both had been divorced twice by then, and it didn’t really come as a surprise when that marriage fell apart too. The one good thing that came out of it was Nolwenn gaining a sister, someone who really got the short end of the stick in life. She just wishes that she could have done more to help her, but what’s done is done, and rest assured that Solenna won’t grow up in a family where her existence will be seen as nothing but an unwanted burden.
For whatever reason, some people are just born unlucky. Clervie was one of them, abused by her mother and basically ignored by her father. Her sister, on the other hand, was spoiled by them, and so her relationship with her sister was strained. Clervie’s mother actually questioned Nolwenn and her mother’s motives just because they never belittled or talked down Clervie, which baffled both of them.
I can’t imagine having such a low opinion of someone, much less your own kid, to the point where you automatically assume there’s some sort of conspiracy going on when something even remotely positive happens to them. Clervie’s mother sounds like the kind of person who gets a kick out of cutting someone down else because they like to be in complete control. People like that should never be parents.
Clervie planned to leave home and move in with Nolwenn as soon as she turned 18, but her sister thwarted her plans by outing her to her mother. For reasons unknown to Nolwenn and Loeve, the youngest stepsister never liked them - the latter saw her as a spoiled brat who was well on her way to becoming like her mother. Both of them blame Nolwenn for turning Clervie into a wretched sinner, which is another way of saying that they’re homophobic bigots.
And so the mother did the worst thing imaginable to Clervie as punishment for being a sad excuse of a daughter. That fucking bitch had one of her coworkers rape Clervie, resulting in her getting pregnant. Then she forced Clervie to carry the pregnancy to term despite her objections, even after complications arose that were serious enough to endanger her life. Not to mention that Clervie didn’t want to bring someone into this world who she’ll probably grow to resent like her mother did with her - that reason alone is more than justified.
Things were so bad that Nolwenn and Loeva had to contact her in secret after Clervie’s mother and sister harassed them whenever they tried to intervene. It wasn’t until Lumine got Tony involved when Nolwenn was able to take legal action to ensure Clervie’s safety, only to be locked in horns with her ex-stepmother’s lawyers. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, Clervie went into premature labor and died from complications while Solenna was barely hanging on.
Even now, Clervie’s mother shows no remorse for her daughter’s death, calling it the will of God and some other bullshit to justify why a lot of things went wrong. But the reality is that things couldn’t have worked out better for her. She used her lawyers to drag things out, knowing full well that her daughter would suffer from inadequate medical care in the process. In other words, Clervie probably would’ve had a better chance of surviving of her mother hadn’t literally kept her under lock and key.
Of course, Nolwenn and Loeve are still fucking angry about what happened, but they’re not gonna let that anger take over their lives. They have Solenna now, who they cherish. Just as Clervie wished, they will raise her to be a strong and capable person who knows that she’s loved and respected by her family, something that she was wrongfully denied by her mother and sister.
Nolwenn said that despite her resentment, Clervie would never stoop so low to take her anger out on someone solely for existing, which is why she speculated that when Clervie foresaw her death, she simply accepted it like it was an act of mercy. So she had Lumine sort out her final affairs as she knew that her mother will turn Solenna’s custody into another drawn out legal battle. Just as she was certain of her own death, Clervie knew that Solenna was going to survive, and so ensuring her future to Nolwenn and Loeve was way of telling her daughter that despite the circumstances, her mother had loved her.
And like Clervie had predicted, her mother only suddenly started taking an interest in Solenna when it was clear that she was going to pull through. If custody was awarded to her grandmother, Solenna would be abused and exploited by her, and maybe grow to resent her mother for allowing such a fate to fall on her. Abuse in a family is a vicious cycle, and there’s no doubt that it would continue to fester had Clervie’s mother got her way.
As far as Nolwenn knows, Clervie’s mother and sister are still playing the victims to draw sympathy regarding her death - absolutely no morals or compassion between them. They can make up whatever lies they want for all she cares - as long as they’re not involved in Solenna’s life whatsoever, it doesn’t matter. Nolwenn, Loeve, Lia, Rivelin, and Dewi aren’t related to her by blood, but they’re more of a family to her than her grandparents and aunt will ever be.
Rivelin served as our main tour guide during our stay in the village, which kinda reminds me of Honeycloud, except a bit more homey, like out in the countryside where everyone’s kinda like a big family in a good way. There’s a lot of street food vendors run by families who lived here for generations, including Loeve’s.
Lia has taken over the family business when her parents decided to go into semi-retirement earlier this year, a soba stand that was originally started by their grandmother around 50 years ago. She and her brothers have been helping out in the kitchen for as long as they can remember and Louve eventually joined in too when she was old enough. For now it’s just the family, though they’re in the process of hiring some temporary part time workers, which is a common practice here. They serve a variety of hot and cold dishes, all original family recipes that you can’t get anywhere else!
So food was the main highlight of our stay in the village and we got to try a lot of good things. At times like these I find it a shame that we only have one stomach. Along with the food, we also learned a bit about some of the vendors, most which have a long history. A lot of the popular vendors are run by elderly couples who have been working for pretty much their whole lives. Although most of them are able to hire help or pass the baton to the next generation so they can have more time to themselves, a lot of them don’t want to fully retire because then they’d have nothing to do. Not only they enjoy what they do, but it gives them the opportunity to socialize since most of their customers are regulars - many they grew up with!
Then out in the wilderness it’s a lot more quiet and still, which is just as nice. Like I said, the heat humidity has not been good to us, so the cool and refreshing air was exactly what we needed. Exploring the mountain peaks in the daylight and stargazing at night, it really doesn’t get better than this.

Hat patterns here we come! Lots of hats, so I'm putting most of them behind the cut...
First though, time for Silly Hats from LOTRO :-D I never got around to writing up patterns for these hats I based on cosmetics/gear in Lord of the Rings Online, but I adore them too much not to show them off.
Here's the Loose Linen Hood:
And the Spring Flinger Cap!
OK, on to normal hats now. :-D
Tentacula Hat - fun stitch technique, super fluffy Wonderfluff yarn from Knit Picks
Beeswax Hat
Camden Cap, which I liked so much I made another one for my mom as I had plenty of that red yarn left over from a sweater to make two whole hats.
Winter Garden Hat is another one with an intriguing stitch technique! It was the first pattern I tried on the Knitrino app, which made it really easy to follow the charts.
Most of those above are JCL hats with my own colorwork patterns, but the bottom left is the adorable Cat-tastic Hat!
Norwegian Star Earflap Hat - I end up wearing this one a lot when the fall starts getting cooler! And it was a pretty easy colorwork pattern, so a good starting point perhaps for someone wanting to learn.
This Felted Bucket Hat pattern is THE best bucket hat pattern I've yet found; I made this purple one for me and a red one for my grandma.
And finally, another hat I designed but never got around to writing down the pattern: the R2D2 hat!
Happy Make A Hat Day! Post your favorite hat pattern and let's start a massive hat pattern thread! I'll start by posting links to the hat patterns in this pic, can even be your own pattern ...

Swatch or Else: Yes, That’s Is as Scary as It Sounds
No, I don’t enjoy making a swatch of knitting to see if I am hitting the correct gauge (stitches per inch) and thus will end up making the correct size sweater. But, the other option, making a sweater and then wandering around the world trying to find a person whom it fits, it even less appealing.
So, I was happy to receive this ChiaoGoo Swatch & Needle Gauge which holds you to the minimum 4″ swatch by offering you little windows to see your stitches and count them accordingly. In addition, it offers all kinds of info. You can measure your needle or hook sizes with the little holes, use conversion charts for US to UK/Canadian numbers, and plus you have the yarn weight tables for reference. It is made out of resin, bends a little, but seems sturdy enough.
It seemed the perfect tool to put to use the smart advice I read in one knitting pattern design book: decide what needle size gives you the fabric you like, then choose the sweater size based on that. So, if the pattern called for a gauge much looser in appearance than what you liked, you could use a smaller gauge and make a larger size in sweater than you would normally wear. I think this advice appealed to me especially as a dressmaker, because if I don’t like the hand of a fabric, how it drapes and feels, then I never buy it despite its pretty color.
Here you see me trying a swatch with a smaller needle in the lower half (see the dental floss strung through along the dividing line). I like the fabric, but had too many stitches per inch according to the sweater pattern. So I tried it with a large needle on the top half and found the fabric too flimsy and the stitches large and clumsy. So I will go with the fabric I liked, smaller needle, smaller gauge, and make a larger size than usual for the sweater.
This tool was bought at a local yarn store, or LYS, so check out your own and see what they’ve got.

Annie Cardigan | February - March, 2021
Happy International Women’s Day!
The pattern and colours of this cardigan are chosen specifically with Women’s Day in mind, and is named after the first woman to gain honours at Oxford, Annie Mary Anne Henley Rogers. She gained her first class honours in Latin and Greek in 1877, followed by first class honours in Ancient History in 1879, and finally matriculated and graduated in 1920.
A lot has happened in the recent few months which made me re-consider my degree at Oxford, but I have never regretted going there or doubted the value of the experience. I have been taught by so many lovely women teachers and professors and met so many fellow female students—which made me sometimes forget the gender inequality in academia and in schools of all ages—and it almost feels like nothing can make me give up the opportunity to be welcomed in this place where I am expected to actually achieve something.
Aren’t I lucky?
This cardigan is probably my last big project until July, because after a long struggle, I’ve decided to finish what I started—I will need to pass the exams in order to continue my study. Today is one of those good days where I feel connected to the world, and I must cherish my opportunity at Oxford because it hasn’t been an easy fight.
There might be a life waiting for me somewhere. Maybe it’s not going to be too bad. Maybe I just need to push myself a little harder. To eat a bit more, to exercise a bit more (not to. lose weight but to be ready for the long hikes in the summer vacation), and to talk a bit more when I feel like it.
Pattern
Once and Floral by Maxim Cyr.
It was a very simple top-down yoke sweater and the instruction was clear. I set myself a difficult task by deciding to make a cardigan instead and doing the body in flat rather than in the round, which meant doing stranded colourwork from the purl side.
The only problem with the pattern was that the required gauge seemed very odd to me. It was 26sts*30 rows in a 10cm square and the author used a standard fingering weight yarn (400m/100g) and 3.5mm needles. I used a light fingering weight yarn and 3.25 needles, which theoretically should make a tighter gauge, but got around 25sts*34 rows per 10cm. Maybe if I pulled my swatch vertically when blocking, I could have achieved what the pattern asked for, which was very tight in stitch gauge but very loose in row gauge. Thankfully it didn’t create too much trouble for me and I had only a few small mods. (Please refer to the Modification section.)
I am becoming more aware of the accessibility issues of Ravelry, and will try to discover more patterns that are available outside of Ravelry. I have access to books by Japanese designers, but if you know any good source for large, complicated, heirloom lace shawls, please let me know!
Yarn
Isager Alpaca 2, 50% alpaca, 50% wool. 250m per 50g skein.
White: (from the Eco range of Alpaca 2) #E0. I used about 30g (11g left from a used ball), or 150m.
Green: #thyme. I used about 168g (52g left from the four skeins I used), or 840m.
Purple: #52. I used about 10g (44g left), or 50m.
(I find that most skeins are a little more than 50g, so the figures are not exact. The usage of the #thyme also includes two small swatches. The whole cardigan weighs 205g without buttons.)
I’ve worked with this yarn before in my Scandinavian Spring cardigan, and this time I’m very pleased with it as well. It is made of natural fibres and has a nice wooly smell. It creates a thin, soft, and warm fabric that grows and puffs up after blocking. In fact, the Isager website specifically recommends it for cardigans.
The down side of such a soft yarn is obviously that it’s not as hard-wearing as some of the more rustic woolen yarns (such as Tukuwool Fingering). The website does state that it’s not able to handle too much wear and tear, but that is okay for me since both this cardigan and my Scandinavian Cardigan are very special and I do not expect to wear them as everyday garments.
These skeins did have travelled a long way to reach me, so I need to keep the carbon emission in mind. I purchased them from a local yarn store which bulk-ordered from the Isager website, though, so at least that’s better than buying small amounts directly from the Isager store. For this specific project, I only had to buy two more skeins of #thyme and one skein of #52, and the rest came from my stash.
(Can you see the heathered effect on this swatch? I'm swooning 😍)
Other materials
I used freshwater mother of pearl buttons. I’m not sure about the source of these buttons, but I understand that freshwater mussels are very important to the ecological systems in which they live (as are all other species), and I do hope that they come from responsible farming.
As for the thread to sew on the buttons, I opted for Fujix Patchwork Coton #50, which is 100% cotton with a coating that makes it a bit glossier, stiffer, and presumably stronger than the average cotton thread.
Needle sizes
3.25mm for the main body
2.5mm for the ribbing, because I like the ribbing to hug my body snugly and was worried about it being stretched out.
Finished size
I no longer think it’s relevant to take excessive measurements of my finished project, so I will only note the essential figures that might help me (or you) if trying to figure out how many stitches to cast on, how to adjust the yoke, etc.
Underarm circumference: 82cm
Total length of the yoke chart: 16cm
(Three ways to wear the cardigan, and the white bordering with which I'm so pleased - see Mod.)
Modifications
The most obvious mod is of course that I changed it from a pullover to a cardigan. Normally you would still knit in the round and steek the front later, but in order to preserve the yarn, I knitted the body back and forth.
I casted on 110sts instead of 120 because I was hoping for a tight collar. Then in the first row I increased to 120sts.
For the colourwork yoke, there were a few rows where I had only three or four sts of one colour in a repeat and the remaining sts are all in other colours (such as the rows showing the stamen), and for me it wasn’t worth it to carry the yarn of that colour all the way along the row. Hence I used a separate length of yarn to knit those few stitches in each repeat. For the stamen, I cut a length of green yarn for each repeat and knitted it in intarsia.
I did the body first. And then I was hesitant about the design of the hemming, button bands, and the collar, so I did them (in the order I mentioned them) before knitting the sleeves to save some brain power. I had seven button holes, one on the collar band and the rest on the button band, similar to the front of a shirt. The third button was specifically placed to echo the design of the yoke.
The pattern called for 1*1 ribbing, but I did 2*2 as it was stretchier. I did invisible 2*2 bind off with a decorative lining, and the technique is similar to what I did with my Toscana Shrug: after several rows of 2*2 ribbing in green, I switched to white and did one more row of ribbing. Then in white I bound off using the invisible method. You need to knit one row in the contrasting colour before binding off; otherwise it would look somewhat messy.)
You may know that when you change colours, there will be a dotted line on the purl side, and the same thing happens for the ‘purl’ part of the ribbing. I was really worried, but the invisible bound off seemed to have covered up that dotted line, so the result was quite neat—a nice surprise!
For each of the sleeve, I have 74sts on the set up row. I knitted 10 rows, then from next row: (dec 2 for the row, knit nine more rows) repeat five times. So at about elbow length I had five dec rows and 64sts on the needles. I knitted 51 rows to create a straight (instead of tapered) forearm. Then I dec 4 each row for five rows, and ended up with 44sts. I then switched to 2.5mm needles and did 2*2 ribbing. I knitted the ribbing extra long so that I could fold it back, which was the way I preferred.
(Here is a tutorial by Anushka about sewing buttons onto knitted garments, which is very helpful.)
Further Considerations
This was my first time doing colourwork from the purl side and it definitely was not a pleasant job. With more practice I will hopefully become better at it, though! I did reserve knitting (knitting from left to right) instead of purling for a few rows, but gave up as I couldn’t find a way to hold yarn comfortably with my left hand. I might need more practice there, too.
The ribbing is a little bit on the tight side, but at the moment I don’t have a problem with it. If I find it still too tight after some wear, next time I will remember to use 2.75mm needles. The 44sts cuffs are quite snug on my wrists, so next time I’ll do 48sts or more instead.
I still have a fair bit of Isager Alpaca 2 left, and I really need some long gloves to warm my wrists as well as forearms, so I might be knitting a pair of fingerless gloves later.

LONELY CHRISTMAS [MIN YOONGI] | FAMILY GATHERINGS
SUMMARY: Christmas has always been your second favorite holiday of the year, especially since you and your boyfriend Yoongi were literally inseperatable. Well, usually you were. But BTS gets more and more famous - world tours, award shows and other idol priorities making it almost impossible to spend this year’s Christmas with your second family.
WARNINGS: so much fluff, but also the dirty kind of smut. fingering, oral (male and female receiving), choking, spitting, raw sex (i dont need to say anything, do i?), switch!yoongi, switch!reader, fighting for dominance, Yoongi being meow meow but also rawr.
QUOTES USED: 2. “That’s the eggnog talking. I’m cutting you off.” 4. “Don’t be such a Scrooge.” 6. “It’s snowing.” 7. “Open it.” 9. “I’m just happy you’re here.” 24. “Is this the part where we kiss?” 31. “Help me decorate.”
Now; Merry (early) Christmas, celebrate well & enjoy this filthy ride to hell.
Also, a big thanks to @holyfluffly, who spent her precious time reading through this & checking for any mistakes. ♥
Since December started to come around – and you finally decided that it was time to stop binging on your favorite Halloween movies -, your house changed from spoopy graveyard to Rudolph’s shed. Fairy lights and beautiful garlands were hung up everywhere and once you plugged all your Christmas lights in, your house was lighter than “Son Goku in his final form”. At least that’s what Jungkook used to describe it when he first stepped into your winter wonderland. It was a tradition your boys always teased you with, but it was a tradition you brought with you from your home country that you wouldn’t want to miss. Your mother used to hang up lights everywhere, different Christmas shapes (you once had this weird reindeer light that looked more like a stabbed donkey, but… well) on every window and your balcony while she said “No matter how far apart we are, your light shines on me” – and 2 years after her death, was your most favorite thing to do once the calendar hit December. That, and ordering a shit ton of products from the LUSH and Bath and Body Works Christmas range. Jimin really loved the welcoming smell of cotton candy and gingerbread men, but Jin would sneeze when you sprayed all their pillows with the Snow Fairy body spray.
Usually, it was Taehyung’s favorite task to pick out a Christmas tree with you, decorating it with the entire family (that obviously consisted of all his band mates, their dogs and you), but this time it was just you, Tannie and Holly walking around the tree field and picking a random one, much smaller than what you’d usually get. There won’t be any presents underneath it anyway. Decorating wasn’t any fun, your Christmas playlist wasn’t helping, the smell of cotton candy wasn’t sweet enough. You made way too many Christmas cookies that wouldn’t be eaten. Your favorite pair of fuzzy socks had a huge hole in them and, oh well, your boyfriend wouldn’t be there for this year’s Christmas.
“Don’t be such a Scrooge, Y/N! It’s festive season!”, Jungkook yelled from somewhere behind Yoongi, energetic as always. “I wouldn’t be a Scrooge if my boyfriend and my friends would be here, celebrating the fest of love with me.” You mumbled quietly, a heavy sigh leaving your chest. It was currently the 17th of December, the first snow has fallen over Seoul, your fireplace crackling softly in the background. Yet, you were freezing. “Jagi, come on. It’s just another day of the year, we’ll be fine. We have New Year’s together, what’s the deal?” Your boyfriend didn’t care that much about festive traditions, hating the thought of Valentine’s Day or Halloween, not even speaking about the stress he always has around the Christmas season. For them, worldwide superstars, it was just another workday.
“You’re just happy you don’t need to wear one of our Christmas sweaters, huh?”, you scolded him, knowing his hate for the scratchy sweaters with the ugly patterns that you always made him and the boys wear for photos and your Christmas dinner at home. “Yeah, I won’t even start talking about those Rudolph ears you bought for our photo last year…”, Yoongi smirked. “I loved those!”, you vaguely heard the voice of Jimin in the background, Taehyung agreeing him on that. “I still wear those whenever I wash my face, thank you Y/N!” Sighing, you wished you were right there, with your loud and energetic boys, instead you were suffering on your own, the pout never leaving your lips.
“Boys, you’ve got 10 Minutes left!”, their tour manager interrupted your sulking, Yoongi nodding at him. “We’ll be right there.” He smiles at your pout, sticking out his bottom lip as well. “I’ll call you after the show, okay? Will you be still awake?” BTS was currently on world tour, playing somewhere in Europe and the time differences made it rougher than ever to talk to your boyfriend every day. You shrug, shivering under the thought of another sleepless night without your love, without the sounds of Taehyung and Jungkook fighting over some videogame and without the thought of Jin’s delicious breakfast to wake up to. “I guess I will, see you later, Yoongs. Bye Tae, bye Jungkook, bye Jiminie!”, you wave to the boys you considered family before smiling sadly at Yoongi. “Good luck, I’m sure you guys will rock that country! I love you.” “I love you too, Jagi. I’ll text you before I’m going to call you, okay? Try and rest.” “Bye, Noona!” Then the screen went black, all you could see was your own sad appearance in one of Yoongi’s oversized Hoodies.
Days went by, you didn’t have the chance to talk very much to Yoongi because of yours and their working schedule, they were currently in the States to record another hit song with some famous American singer that would explode on the Charts the second it comes out. Sure, you loved your boy’s music, you could listen to them sing and rap for hours, they worked hard and deserved all their success – but you didn’t wonder that all of them weren’t in a relationship. Tour life was hard, not only for their girlfriends but for them, too. A simple picture from across the world with a random girl could ruin relationships, just because of a misunderstanding. When you and Yoongi started dating a couple of years ago, Jin had a long-distance relationship – which already sucks for ‘normal’ human beings, but for worldwide superstars? A catastrophe because you couldn’t just come home to your significant other. It was over for them after a few months because she met a nice guy from her apartment complex, because he was there while Jin wasn’t. It was sad, especially for the Maknaes, because they needed affection, they needed their experience, they needed love. Instead, they had to have One Night Stands, making sure that those girls wouldn’t talk about their “night with BTS”. Truth be told it was too much work to find a girl to get laid, so they’d simply refuse, giving into their frustration and suffer from loneliness.
With Yoongi, things were easy. He didn’t get jealous whenever you hung out with other guys, but he also didn’t give you any reason to be jealous as well. People always describe him as “cold”, “depressed” or “weird guy that’s always quiet”, but once he warmed up to you, he was even funnier than Jin, his dry humor and loving gestures winning over your heart immediately. He was a family person, loving to be in a cozy home surrounded by his bandmates and you, even if he’d never say that out loud, all of them knew it. Yoongi was a loving person, whether he was showing it or not.
The 20th December rolled around quicker than you thought, last minute presents were bought, the house completely decorated and one Christmas movie after the other was playing on TV – but you were still sulking. “You didn’t even help me decorate! I had to do all of that by myself!”, you switched your phone camera so you could show Jimin how beautiful the living room looked, smiling at his little pout. “Noona!”, he whined, “Don’t be angry, okay? I promise you I’ll decorate for New Year’s all by myself.” “Don’t worry, Jiminie, it’s not your fault you can’t be here. Where’s Hobi? I’m watching his favorite Christmas movie, but I can’t get in the mood without my sunshine.” Jimin looks around, his lips twitching, but he remained quiet. “Jimin?” “He’s… uhhhh… He’s doing stuff with Yoongi and Tae?” You raise an eyebrow at him, taking another sip of the creamy eggnog you ordered online because it was nowhere to be found in Seoul. “Are you lying, Jiminie?” “No, but… Oh, Jungkook calls for me, bye Noona!” Sighing, you dropped your phone aside, head tilting towards the window while a soft smile appeared on your lips. It’s snowing.
On the 24th December, the boys had their last official concert of the year – in Australia. A 13-hour flight away, plus the two-hour time difference that made your heart sink, because whenever you were ready to call Yoongi, he was already too tired because of the concert and travel exhaustion. As one of the idol’s girlfriend, it was basically your job to watch their performances, you streamed all of them, no matter what time it was in your time zone, but it wasn’t as good as it would be when you were there. You loved going to their concerts, not standing backstage to watch the show, no. You preferred going into the crowd, singing and dancing along with ARMYs from around the world and watching your family from down there, enjoying their glow and sensual performances from a fan’s perspective. But today, it was just you and your laptop, watching the stream in your bed, a cup of your favorite tea beside you, Tannie on your lap and Holly somewhere besides you under the blanket, asleep like always. A smile was plastered on your face as you saw that all of them were wearing those “stupid Rudolph ears” – even if Yoongi looked grumpier than ever. You were fascinated as always – how could those cute little boys turn into Korean gods within two seconds? Of course, the Maknaes were the center of attention, fans chanting for them, dancing and screaming – you couldn’t deny the fact that they looked great, but exhaustion was plastered on all of their faces. Your eyes were plastered on the smol bean that caught your heart and as if he knew, he smiled into the camera, giving it a finger heart.
The 25th December was rough, you didn’t even want to get out of bed, staying under the covers for several hours after waking up. There was no reason so get up if there wasn’t anyone to give presents to. You didn’t use your phone, watching The Nightmare before Christmas again because if you acted like it was still Halloween, you wouldn’t be as sad that you were alone on your second favorite holiday of the year. It was around 12pm when the two dogs came into your room, whimpering because you didn’t take them out yet. “Ugh, fine, fine. Let me grab my shoes and we’ll go out”, you mumbled groggily while heaving your tired body out of bed. Pulling your slippers over your cold toes as you tied your hair out of your face. You didn’t plan to go out for too long, so you didn’t even try to make yourself look good. Humming the movie’s soundtrack, you made your way downstairs, surprised by the warm scent of cinnamon and vanilla that filled the house. “Huh, did I leave my candles on?” With furrowed eyebrows you check the living room, not wanting to burn the entire house down on Christmas, but you stood still in shock when you realized why it smelled just the way it did.
Jimin and Jin were busy in the kitchen, baking cookies and cooking up your Christmas dinner. Jungkook and Taehyung were building a giant gingerbread house while Namjoon sat besides them, frustrated over his own ruined house laying in broken pieces. Hobi placing all of the presents underneath the Christmas tree while Yoongi sat on the couch, Holly on his lap and a loving smile on his face as he saw you in your sleepy state with a frown on your face. “Merry Christmas, babe.”
Suddenly, seven pairs of eyes were on you, smiles beaming across the entire room and seconds later you were caught in a warm, cozy group hug. “Surprise, Noona!”, Jungkook beamed as he pressed a kiss on your cheek, receiving a flip against his forehead from Yoongi. “Lips away, you can kiss Taehyung, not my girl.” Taehyung’s cheeks burned a bright red, Jungkook looked away while biting his lips and Jimin just smirked but pressed you tight against his body. “We’re glad to be back.” Jin groaned, pulling you out of the hug. “Let that poor girl alone, she needs to collect her thoughts first. Look at her”, he pointed towards your face, shock still written across it as you looked into each of your boys’ faces. “You… I mean, how… You were… Australia?” Your boyfriend laughed, now pulling you into a tight hug while burying his nose in your hair, inhaling the familiar scent that always calmed him down. “We’re here, that’s all that matters.” “We took the first plane back home, but we’ve been waiting for you to get up since 9AM, what did you do? It’s Christmas, usually you’d set an alarm at 6AM to run and check your presents”, Hobi pouted, pointing towards the tree.
“I didn’t have a reason to be up, so I watched The Nightmare before Christmas. But now, I’m just happy you’re here”, you smiled fondly at all of them, “Open your presents. Especially you, Babe. Open it!” You clap your hands excitedly, jumping up and down as you hand them their presents: a big, soft blanket for Jimin, so he can roll himself up in it and be cozy the entire holidays. A new Japanese knife for Jin, because Namjoon broke his favorite knife when he tried to cut through a book – don’t ask, nobody knows why he did that. Namjoon got a new KAWs figure he didn’t have the chance to buy yet while Hoseok got a new Palm Angels hoodie. Taehyung and Jungkook got some games for their PlayStation and a set of new controllers, because… well, Jungkook tends to destroy them when he’s in a rage. Yoongi’s present was hard to find because he basically has everything he wants and you weren’t too familiar with all those high end music technologies that you could give him, so you decided on a spa weekend over the holidays, just the two of you in a fancy wellness resort. Exactly what he needed after that tour. “Y/N, you must be poor by now! I should have gotten you a gift card or something”, Taehyung pouted, “You spent way too much on our presents!” You smiled, shaking your head and pressed a soft kiss on his cheeks. “Everything for my family. You’re all that I have left.”
The day went by way too fast; a fabulous Christmas buffet was set up by Jin, eggnog and wine handpicked by the youngest Maknae and Christmas movies of Jimin’s choice made up for all the days you spent sulking in your room. “I love you guys so much. I can’t believe you surprised me like that! Ugh, I really thought I had to spend Christmas with just the dogs.” You placed your head on Yoongi’s shoulder, cuddling deeper into the soft material of his hoodie while he rubbed your shoulder. “That’s the eggnog talking, love. You’re the anchor of our little family, we couldn’t be apart from you over the holidays, Jungkook would’ve driven us crazy and Namjoon would set the hotel on fire while trying to light a Christmas candle”, Yoongi mumbled. “A Christmas wonder! Yoongi confessed his feelings! Tweet that, Namjoon!”, Hoseok yelled while earning a slap on the back of his head from Jimin. “Don’t scare him, he’s like a deer right now, if we just ignore it, maybe he’ll say something nice about us too!” Yoongi just rolled his eyes, pulling you closer toward his small frame while mumbling “Idiots”.
It was past midnight, your tummies filled with delicious snacks and desserts, brain fogged because of the amount of alcohol all of you drank that day – and you were just happy to finally be in bed with your boyfriend again. “You know how lonely the nights were without you? Not just you, but also the boys. I even missed Jungkook’s animal imitations”, you sighed, “I missed breakfast, without Jin all I ate was toast and cucumbers. I’m lucky to be part of your family.” Yoongi smiled, a precious, rare smile that showed all his love for you.
“I had time to think on tour, you know. It’s rough, you not being there with me, I saw all those places, cities and famous buildings, but didn’t have you to share those moments with. I had dinner with Taehyung right in front of the Eiffel Tower, I shared a Pizza in Venice with Jungkook, had beer with Hoseok in Berlin, but I wish I had all those moments with you, love. So, I’m bad at this stuff, you know that. The entire world knows that, but you also know that I love you. And I wish you could be the person by my side on tour, on every tour. I wish you could be my +1 at events, dinner parties or during award shows. I even talked to our management, because an ‘official girlfriend’ is dangerous for all of us. But I didn’t want the world to meet you as my girlfriend, Y/N. I want them to finally meet you as my wife, the woman that won’t ever leave my side. This is probably trashy and I could use better opportunities for that, but… Y/N, my love, my flower, my angel, would you marry me?” Yoongi, the smooth guy he was, pulled out a simple yet beautiful rosé gold ring – without a box – from the pocket of his sweats, sitting in front of you on your bed, crossed legs and a nervous smile on his face. You couldn’t hide the pout on your face, lips quivering and tears dwelling in your eyes while you looked at the beautiful man in front of you, the beautiful ring in his hands and outside, snowflakes fall from the sky. Everything was perfect. “Yoongi… Yes! Fuck, of course!”, you jumped into his lap, not caring about the pling your engagement ring made when it fell to the floor, because right now, your fiancé was more important. You showered his face in kisses, not caring the slightest about the grumpy noises he made – even if they were fake, because he was just as happy as you were. His smile was beautiful, something you didn’t see that much because he seldom smiled so brightly even his bottom teeth were showing. “Is that the part where we kiss?”
You didn’t hesitate to press your lips onto his, soft and loving, sweet and tender. “Min Yoongi, is that the part where you turn into the sweet little kitten your fandom thinks you are?” Smirking, Yoongi growls at you, showing you his teeth once more. “Oh baby, I’m going to show you that nothing on my body is little.” His lips were back on yours, his hands buried in your hair as he made his way between your legs, almost crushing you with the comfortable weight of his body on yours. Whatever loving, sweet innocent kiss you shared before, this one was completely different. It gave way to heated passion as you both continue the lustful, erotic exchange. Yoongi’s shaking but skilled hands started to peel off your ugly Christmas sweater and the rest of your clothes, falling to the floor forgotten, before he gently bites along your jaw and the nape of your neck, leaving a trail of love bites on the way down there. Your moans fill the room that still smells like cinnamon and cotton candy, combined with Yoongi’s musky scent and the sweet scent of a heated make-out session. With his lips still attached to your soft skin, you take the opportunity to catch him off guard and flip both your bodies into a new position; you now straddling his slim waist. Yoongi’s lips widened in shock, then turned into a bright smirk. “Someone’s feisty.” You just smile at him sweetly, cutting off his words as you wrap your hands around his beautiful throat, leaning your face towards his ear. “I wouldn’t speak like that in such a position, Babe.”
Yoongi’s voice hitched, “Y/N”, he whined. The same hand that restricted his airways comes up to slightly slap his scruffed cheek, but it had still enough force to leave a sting that reminded him not to speak up anymore. “Aren’t you going to be a good boy? Or should I call you a good little kitten? Would you like that?” He shakes his head quickly, baring his teeth once more. “Shut that, love. You won’t be able to tame a lion. I’m not a small kitten.” He knows he could switch positions any time, hell, you knew that too. But you also knew that he enjoyed that position too much to change anything now. Shaking your head in displeasure, you crawl down the bed to be at eye level with his beautiful cock. The cock that had you limping almost every night, that never fails to give you pleasure, that already sends tingles to your core. Your hands were cold against the prominent vine that ran from his shaft to his leaking tip, red and sensitive as you licked your finger to circle around it. Tiny moans – mewls – left his mouth, causing you to giggle. You knew it. His balls were tight, full and hurting. He was away for so long, having almost no time to pleasure himself. You cooed, the other hand coming up to gently play with them, rolling them around as you kept applying pressure to his tip. Yoongi’s groans got louder and louder once your mouth was finally working its magic on him, his hands buried inside the loose strands of your hair, trying to shove you down deeper. Much to your displeasure.
You hissed, letting go of his length as you crawled up to sit on his toned chest. Smiling, you slid your fingers through your soaked folds, holding them in front of his sweaty face. “Suck.” Oh, and how he sucks. His tongue working circles around your digit, collecting your sweet juices as he hums happily. “You’re my toy. A fucking toy, do you understand that? You don’t get to make rules here, Yoongi. If I want to suck your cock, I’ll do it how I want, not how you want it. Or did I miss something?” You made sure his eyes never left yours, fingers still inside his mouth – and you just decided to shove them down a bit deeper, making him gag around them just like he wants you to gag around his cock. “I asked you something, pretty babe. Mind answering?” Yoongi hums again, not able to speak with your fingers down his throat, but it was good enough of a try for you. It wasn’t every day you got the chance to dominate Min Yoongi, you were sure to getting everything out of it. You pulled your now wet digits out of his mouth, wiping away his spit somewhere in his mint colored hair, as you turned around to sit on his face, just like he loves you to do. By now, his only problem was holding back his load, eating your pussy wouldn’t help with that though. “Now, are you going to cum for me, precious? While devouring my pussy? I bet you’d like that, huh?” Yoongi hums again, his hands already on your ass to spread your cheeks, allowing him to dive deep into your pussy, drinking your juices, slurping them down like a fine, ripe wine. Teasingly, you continued to jerk him off, enjoying the tension in his body, his concentration on your pussy rather than his own orgasm. “Mh, wait. I changed my mind. Hold it, you don’t have my permission just yet”, you laughed as you squeezed his balls – but he wasn’t able to control it or hold it back. His cock twitched uncontrollably, one small rope of cum leaving the tip. “Ugh, look at that”, you sighed while shaking your head, sitting down deeper on his face – your ass now flat against his forehead as his tongue, the oh so famous rapper tongue, worked its wonders.
If Yoongi was frustrated, he didn’t show it. He knew better. Even though it was his first real orgasm in weeks, his first ruined orgasm in weeks, he stood up the man he was and continued what he was here for. Pleasuring his fiancé. Just before your orgasm arrived, you crawled down again, collecting the small puddle of cum with your tongue and fed it to your soon to be husband. You let him taste himself, he swallowed greedily. “Such a good boy”, you purr while wiping the sweat from his forehead. “Now, I hope you know who you belong to.” Yoongi just nods, licking his lips to still taste you. “Tell me who you belong to, Yoongi”, you command.
“You, babe. Only you. I belong to you”, Yoongi moans out as you started to grind against his smooth thigh, picking up your desired pace as you used him to satisfy your own desire. His hands were on your hips, guiding you and helping you to speed up, but just before your orgasm reached his peak, just one little rock of your hips missing, he turned you around, leaving you with a ruined orgasm as well. “Fucking son of a bi-“, your frustration interrupted by Yoongi’s teeth biting into your nipple, his hand smacking your other tit. “Oh, that’s not a nice word, baby”, he pouts while pinching both of your erect buds with a bit too much force. A sharp stinging sensation radiating through your body. “Fuck, Yoongi”, you moaned, desperate for release. “Now, now”, he tzed as he looked down at your trembling body. “Sucks to be played with, huh?” Elegant fingers started to rub circles into your swollen nub, your body rising from the mattress just to be pushed back by your fiancé. “Still”, he orders, plunging two of his long, delicate fingers into your dripping hole. Yet, you needed more. “Yoongi”, you whined. “Are you going to be a good girl now? Instead of a fucking brat?” “Yes!”, you cried out, tears running down your cheeks, hoping he’d just do something. “Good, because bad girls disgust me”, he spoke through clenched teeth as he pulled out his fingers and shoved his cock inside you within seconds. “Fuck fuck fuck, yes!”
“Shut up! Or do you want the boys to come in and join you, huh? You want our little Maknae see how stuffed you are?” Yoongi always knew about your affection for Jungkook, the way his doe eyes always make your heart jump, leaving it impossible to deny whatever he wanted from you while addressing you as his ‘favorite Noona’. You were weak for him, but you wouldn’t want him to see you in such a situation. Shaking your head in shame, you pout as you dig your heels into his ass to get him to move faster. “Make me cum, please. I love you”, you whine, word for word leaving your lips as he thrusts deep and powerful into your clenching hole. Just before another beg could leave your lips, Yoongi’s index finger slipped past them, your chin securely trapped between his thumb and middle finger. His other hand slowly found its place on your neck. “Look at you”, he smiles. “Such a good girl, knowing how to beg like a big girl.” You whimper again, squeezing around him as he slowed his pace with a devilish smirk. Your lips played with the tip of his finger while the thumb of his other hand came down to circle your clit painfully slow, spitting onto it and watching his finger mixing it with your arousal. Your eyes rolled into the back of your head, both of your hands gripping the wrist that was choking you. “Tighter, please”, you gasped out, enjoying the feeling of almost no air coming to your lungs. Oh, how Yoongi loved to see you struggle for air, just as much as you loved to be on the receiving end. “You gonna come for me, angel?”, he growled as he tightened his grip, already feeling his own orgasm approaching. “Going to cum around my thick cock, huh?” You nod, already seeing spots in your vision, your orgasm shooting through your body just like a firework as soon as Yoongi released you, allowing the blood to shoot back into your head. You couldn’t control your body anymore, gushing against him as you rode out your high with closed eyes. That alone triggered Yoongi’s orgasm, a loud scream leaving his lips as he finally released inside you. “Fuck, you squirted all over me”, he groaned while looking at the mess you made, his stomach glistering in your juices. “I don’t care, I want to snuggle my Grinch now”, you pouted with grabby hands, smiling happily as Yoongi obeyed.
“I think we lost the ring somewhere between our clothes”, Yoongi mumbles with his sleepy voice, “I hope Taehyung won’t find it, he was the one that chose it – ‘If Y/N says no, I’ll wear that one happily’.” Suddenly you’re wide awake, knees on the floor and digging through your clothes to find the symbol of your love. “Got it!”, you yelled as you threw it to Yoongi, holding your left hand in front of his face. “You’ve got the honor, babe.” Smiling, he slid the ring over your finger. The black diamonds sparkling in the dim light of your room, the rosé gold complimenting your skin tone perfectly, just like the man in front of you does. Your fiancé, soon to be husband, the love of your life. “Merry Christmas, love.”

Avarice (6/6)
AU of the Transcendence AU where Grunkle Stan becomes a demon instead of Dipper.
Prologue / Chapter 1 / Chapter 2 / Chapter 3 / Chapter 4 / Chapter 5 / Chapter 6
on AO3
also on ff.net (no link because filters)
“Grunkle Ford, Grunkle Ford, look what we found!”
Ford let out a noise of surprise as he turned and threw the nearest of a sizable stack of crumpled-up wads of paper at the source of the words. The paper ball harmlessly bounced off an unbothered Mabel, who was excitedly waving a notebook page in the air, the wide grin on her face rivaled only by that of her brother.
Ford let out a sigh of relief as he pushed himself up from the desk, where he had been crouched over notes, head and arms encircling the papers. “I’m sorry, Mabel, you just... startled me.”
“Pssh.” Mabel used her free hand to make a gesture waving away Ford’s concern. “Not a problem. But look, we found something in your notes that could help against Bill!” She waved the notebook page around even more enthusiastically, the paper curving and flapping in the air.
“Careful with that! Here, let me get a closer look.”
“Oh. Right.”
Ford stepped closer, and Mabel held out the page. It didn’t look particularly remarkable at a glance, displaying nothing that looked particularly menacing or lethal, just a few small pictures and scribbled descriptions of several rather mundane-looking objects.
Ford examined the page closely, tracing the writing with his finger before eventually resting his thumb next to a picture of something that looked as much like a cheap gift shop knick-knack as a magical artifact worthy of serious study, muttering to himself all the while, before finally glancing back up at Dipper and Mabel. “Good find, you two.”
“Dipper found it, actually.” Mabel extended her arm towards her brother, who stood up straighter at the mention of his name.
“A-and I was thinking-” Dipper rummaged through his vest before retrieving a small notebook, which he flipped through frantically. “-if we combined that with-”
“Quiet now.” Ford scanned the room, but overlooked Stan’s hiding spot near the bottom of the tarp. (Stan always had been the better of the two at hide and seek.) “He’s probably watching us as we speak. If we’re going to plan anything, we need to do it as quietly and stealthily as possible, so that there’s a chance he might not notice.”
And so Ford and the kids gathered together supplies and huddled around a piece of... was that parchment? Of all the things Ford could have around as writing material, he was using parchment? At least that’s what it looked like, a giant piece of off-white paper, nothing like the stuff you’d buy at the store...
The three sketched and wrote frantically on the paper, but the way they all leaned over it made it damn near impossible for Stan to get a glimpse at their plans, even when he eventually inched away from the tarp and closer to their work. They worked for minutes, maybe hours, it was hard to tell, but eventually the three split up and started working on separate projects, ones that still didn’t make much sense as Stan watched them being made piece by piece. But one pattern emerged from their work.
Apparently, to defeat a demon triangle, you needed... circles. Lots and lots of circles.
The circle that Mabel was working on was composed of wood, thin pine boughs twisted and bent until they joined together to make a circle as wide as Mabel was tall, a fact repeatedly demonstrated by her laying down in the middle while doing her work (and when she occasionally flopped down on top of the circle when she had had enough and needed a break). Across the circle, she made intricate loops and patterns with off-white string, geometric shapes arranged just so, with all the lines eventually criss-crossing around the circle’s center. On roughly a quarter of the circle she hung neon-colored strings and lined them with thick beads and brightly-dyed feathers.
It was, admittedly, a magnificent crafts project, but its connection to the situation at hand was utterly lost on Stan.
Dipper’s project was a bit more straightforward. He made a circle out of rainbow hair, unicorn hair, and Stan had seen a similar lining just outside the Shack, could guess its intended purpose. There was more to the circle than the hair, too- stones dotted its perimeter at regular locations, and all around the edge had been sprinkled drops of mercury, the silver beads gleaming as they were carefully nudged into place. The space that this barrier encompassed was a bit smaller than that of Mabel’s wooden circle; within it lay a large stack of books, the memory gun that Ford had used to get rid of the feds, and, for some reason, a spray bottle full of unidentified clear liquid. (Stan would have liked to assume that the liquid was water. Stan knew better.)
Ford used thick white chalk to outline circles within circles within circles, the outermost one significantly dwarfing the other two projects. (Only one room in the house had enough open space for such a project, and upon poking his head into the basement, Stan had found its floor conveniently vacant; he hadn’t seen the cleaning happen, but the dust of the basement floor matched the dust on Ford’s clothes, and his boots sported a thick layer of mud that hadn’t been there the night before, and he could put together the rest.) Along the chalk lines he added a number of candles- not the ugly squat things Stan kept around in case of a power outage or the thin, colorful ones which had been sitting in a half-empty box in the far reaches of the freezer for decades on end, but long, white, tapered candles, probably meant for some formal occasion, doubtlessly expensive. In between the circles-in-circles Ford wrote symbols, some arcane and some prosaic, some that Stan dimly remembered from old portal-fixing research (was that one from a star chart?) and some that he came across on a daily basis (that tree symbol looked just like the one on that hat Dipper always wore, and he’d seen that shooting star on one of Mabel’s sweaters, and the six-fingered hand... was obvious enough as well).
The work on all three soon turned into mere tweaking, into brushing away lines and replacing them with nearly-identical counterparts, into scraping stones against wood while adjusting their placement slight fractions of an inch, into breaking out a tool Stan dimly remembered from math class to make sure that the string patterns were aligned just so. Stan didn’t know where to look, or what to look for. He suspected that that was rather the point.
Ford came up to check on the kids and their work every so often.
He did not, Stan noted, invite them to do the same.
The last of his check-ups came hours after the summer sun had set, and while in the others Ford had ended his examinations with long lists of things that needed to be edited or redone, this time he offered only a few minor additions, the critique far outweighed by praise. The three stood together inside the unicorn hair circle as Ford rambled on about something to do with the special properties of mercury on wood.
Stan was on the outside of the circle; he couldn’t join them if he tried (and he had tried, had tried several times now, growing bolder as the hours fled by and little seemed to change). Sure, the barrier was made with sparkly hair and gemstones, and the others had no trouble scampering through what looked to the world like thin air, but for Stan it might as well have been a metal wall- it was hard and smooth and cold and even if he charged at it with all his might, Stan wasn’t so sure it’d be the one to budge.
Stan leaned back against the barrier, which came into view as he made contact, emitting a purple-tinged glow riddled with strange sigils.
“Neat trick there, I’ll give you that one.”
Ford didn’t pause his nerd rant for even a moment to show that he’d heard.
“If I knew how to make these work for, er, normal people, the Mystery Shack would have its newest attraction ready to go!”
That one merited a pause, a pause followed by Ford spitting out words rapid-fire as if to make up for lost time.
Stan could practically feel Ford’s gaze burning into the back of his head.
He didn’t turn around.
“I can see it now...” Stan held up his hands as if framing a sign. “’The Invisi-Maze: More fun than the eye can handle!’ Or somethin’ like that, anyway...”
Stan’s arms fell back as he finished gesturing, and he kept slipping as he tried to reposition himself against the awkwardly-curved barrier, eventually taking a step back altogether. He glanced briefly at the colorful barrier before it rippled back into invisibility, revealing a brother who was indeed giving him a vicious glare.
“Probably, uh, hafta get that glow thing in check first. But forget the hall of mirrors, any two-bit hole in the wall can throw together one of those, but an actual invisible maze, hell, what tourist wouldn’t pay out the nose for something like that...”
“This is more than mere fodder for some cheap tourist attraction, Sta-”
All eyes fell on Ford as he halted his speech in the middle of the word. He rubbed one hand against his temple, breaths deep and quick as he paused before speaking up again, voice rushed and with a hint of a tremor.
“Bill, you’re Bill, I know you’re Bill-”
“Grunkle Ford, what’s going on?”
“What’s he doing? Is there something we can do to help?”
Dipper grabbed Ford’s loose hand, and as Ford let his other hand drop back to his side Mabel latched onto it in turn. Ford’s breathing slowed as he squeezed the twins’ hands, though there was still a slight weakness in his voice as he responded.
“...Never mind that. More importantly, I believe I’ve been lecturing you two for far too long.” He let out a noise that was clearly intended as some manner of laugh, but fell far short of the mark. “What matters is that you’ve both done a fine job, and both of these should do quite well to help us defeat Bill.”
Ford shot Stan a quick glare. Stan shot one right back.
“In fact, take the rest of the night off. We can do any minor tweaks in the morning, but I wouldn’t worry too much about that.”
“And what about you?”
“I’ll be tending to my own project down in the basement. I’ll see you again come morning.”
“Can we help?”
“No!”
A moment of silence fell upon the room before Ford attempted to soften his reply.
“It’s very- very delicate and complicated work, you see, and you two could use the rest anyway-”
“Sure, they’re the ones who need rest.” Stan mumbled.
If Ford heard Stan’s words, he didn’t show it.
“-so I’m sorry, but you can’t join me down there, you really can’t. Just- don’t go in the basement, no matter what, unless your life is in danger.”
“But Grunkle Ford-”
“No buts. I will come to see you in the morning. Until then, just- stay safe, stay up here, and if anything happens, if he...” Ford sighed and squeezed the twins’ hands tightly. “Just be careful. Promise me that.”
Dipper and Mabel looked up at their great-uncle’s deep eyes before nodding.
“We promise.”
“Don’t worry about us, Grunkle Ford- we’re just worried about you!”
“Don’t be.” Ford shook his head and let out another not-quite-laugh. “I’ll be fine. It will all be fine come morning. Now-” Ford released his hands from the children’s grip. “I’m going to go work. Nobody follow me.”
Ford rushed towards the basement entrance, leaving a confused Dipper and Mabel in his wake. Stan, after a brief moment of consideration, followed behind.
Ford worked at a frantic pace, sketching designs that were more and more intricate until Stan could barely make out the individual lines, measuring and re-measuring the circles and the candle placements, consuming prodigious amounts of coffee but no actual sustenance. Stan hung back for the most part, though he didn’t bother hiding from Ford’s view anymore; he made a few passing remarks, attempts to rekindle a conversation, but his words faded and died in the basement’s cold, stale air.
Stan kept his distance as Ford began to light the long, thin candles one by one, going from the outside inward; Stan hung back as Ford reached the center of the innermost circle and got out a fancy-looking knife, its hilt shimmering in the candlelight. Only as Ford pressed the knife into the palm of his hand and beads of crimson blood dripped onto the floor did Stan rush forward, suddenly keenly aware of every microscopic nerve and blood vessel that Ford might have just cut into, all the irreversible damage that might be caused by a single poorly-placed cut.
“Goddammit, Ford, be careful!”
But Ford was faster than him, it seemed, for by the time Stan reached the center Ford was already on the far side of the farthest circle, chanting some gobbledygook that might have been Latin. (Stan suddenly regretted all the times he had nodded off during Latin class.) Ford’s voice reached a crescendo, a wave of warmth passed over Stan...
And then, to Stan’s shock, Ford actually responded to him.
“Since when do you swear?”
“Since, uh, sixth grade? Seventh?” Stan shrugged. “You probably remember better than I do, I wasn’t exactly subtle-”
“That’s not what I meant.”
There was a sound Stan couldn’t quite place, something soft against stone.
“What was that?”
“I’m not getting distracted that easily.”
“No, seriously, what was that?” Stan looked to the source of the sound and saw nothing but a few clumps of dirt and pebbles- though he was pretty sure those hadn’t been there before. “Is this place caving in or something? Because that’s the sort of thing I’d like to know about sooner rather than later, ghost or no.”
“Wh- Look. We can solve this once and for all now. If you really are Stan’s ghost, just leave the circle. A ghost would have no trouble with these wards.”
“Seriously? That’s it?” Stan started floating towards Ford, whose expression was nearly indecipherable. “After all that, I just-”
Stan didn’t mean to scream.
Honestly, he didn’t. But it was only natural that he let out a yelp when he touched that first chalk line and slammed into what felt like a concrete wall and an electric fence put together. There was still no sign to the bare eye that anything was there, no glimmering wall to mark the barrier that was clearly there for him, just a point at which thin air turned into wall and pain.
“I knew it.” There was a cold fury in Ford’s voice, but also a strange melancholy. “This circle was made specifically to contain a demon, to contain you. Which it’s doing quite well, I might add.”
Stan tried to push through, to break whatever barrier those chalk lines had built up, but though he put all his force into it, the only sign that he was doing anything was a few measly sparks and an ever-increasing amount of pain.
Finally Stan fell back, retreating into the circle’s center, not sure that he was ready to concede defeat just yet but willing to at least give himself a little time to recover.
“If- if this thing only works against demons, then...” Stan put together the pieces quickly enough, though he didn’t much like the picture they painted. “Wait, humans can become demons? Does that mean Bill was-”
“No. Humans are humans, demons are demons, and that’s that.”
“Well, the world kind of went topsy-turvy yesterday, clearly a few things must have gone by the wayside...”
“Ah yes, thank you for reminding me of that.” Ford reached into his jacket and pulled out a box nearly as long as he was tall, setting it on the floor- there was a yellow label on the box, and Stan could just barely make out the word Experiment, followed by a three-digit number. “I’m going to make sure you never pull a stunt like that again.”
What Ford grabbed when he opened the box turned out to be a gun- a huge, sci-fi-looking gun, and Ford probably would’ve used fancier words to describe it, but Stan knew a gun when he saw one. It wasn’t the first time he’d found himself on the wrong end of one, either, but as Ford’s aim grew more precise, Stan was beginning to suspect that it would be the last.
“Your reign of terror ends here, Bill.”
“No, wait-” Stan flew upwards as fast as he could, but well before he could reach the ceiling one of those invisible barriers jolted him, sending him reeling back towards the floor. “-c’mon, Ford, don’t do this to me, please-” He tried to swerve, to maneuver around as much as he could to avoid whatever that sci-fi gun had in store for him, but there just wasn’t enough room, and the muzzle was glowing blue and Stan didn’t know exactly what that meant but he was pretty sure it wasn’t good news for him...
For one brief moment, Stan and Ford looked each other in the eye, and Stan silently pleaded to his brother to think twice, tried to save himself without words at a time when words failed him-
-but Ford closed his eyes as his finger twitched against the trigger.
THUMP!
Ford’s aim went awry as the sudden noise distracted him, and the shot landed not on Stan’s head or torso but on his left pinky finger, a grazing shot that nonetheless hurt like hell. What the shot had touched, it had obliterated, leaving Stan with only four fingers remaining on his hand- until, as he watched, bone and muscle and skin appeared out of thin air and stitched itself back together, and after a few long, painful seconds his pinky was back, with no sign left to show that it had ever vanished in the first place.
Ford was watching Stan too, a somber look upon his face as Stan’s finger rebuilt itself, so neither of the two had actually looked over at the source of the sudden sound until-
“Grunkle Ford, what are you doing?”
Both Stan and Ford spun around to find that where there had been nothing but a few rocks, there now stood both Dipper and Mabel, the two wide-eyed and covered in dirt.
“What are you doing?” Ford retorted. “I told you two to stay upstairs!”
“Yeah... about that...” Dipper scratched the back of his head nervously, while Mabel shot Ford a sheepish smile.
“You were acting... kinda suspicious. So I may have- sort of- followed you down here to see what was going on. And once I saw Grunkle Stan I went and got Dipper and-”
“How? I would have heard you using the elevator...”
Before Ford could finish his sentence, Mabel brought out her tool of choice and pointed it triumphantly in the air. “Grappling hook!”
“Wait, wait, wait...” Stan jumped in, and all eyes turned to face him. “You can see me?”
Dipper and Mabel both nodded and made noises of agreement, their wide eyes growing even wider.
Ford impatiently tapped his foot against the ground. “Of course they can see you, it’s a summoning circle, the whole point is that you’re physical until the summons ends-”
“Holy shit, you can- er- don’t tell your parents I said shit, okay?” After a moment’s thought, Stan added, “Actually, don’t tell your parents about any of this. That seems like a bad idea all around.”
“Was this your plan all along, Bill, to drag them into this?”
“Was your plan all along just to shoot me?” Ford stayed silent in the face of this accusation, and Stan, all too aware that Ford’s gun was still aimed in his general direction, pressed on. “All those fancy circles and lines and- it was all just a distraction, wasn’t it?” Stan pinched the bridge of his nose. “I should have known- a classic shell game right there.”
Mabel wrinkled her nose and tilted her head to one side. “A what now?”
“A shell game- you know-” Stan’s hands flailed around in a series of awkward gestures as he attempted an explanation. “-you get three cups and put a ball under one, and move the cups around a bunch and get people to bet on which cup the ball is under, and by the time those rich guys realize you’re palming the ball halfway through you’re walking away a couple hundred dollars richer.” Stan coughed and scratched the back of his neck nervously in the silence that followed. “Uh, not that I’ve done it myself. And you shouldn’t either, it’s a bad idea. Especially once the cops get involved.”
Ford adjusted his glasses before speaking up. “That... is a surprisingly apt metaphor.”
“Was that a compliment? That sounded suspiciously like a compliment.”
“No, absolutely not.”
“Grunkle Ford...” Mabel’s speech was hesitant as she looked from one grunkle to the other. “...were you really going to shoot Grunkle Stan?”
Ford let out a long sigh before responding, resting one hand on Mabel’s shoulder in a gesture of solace. “I’m sorry, Mabel, but that?” Ford pointed to Stan. “That’s Bill. He’s been taking that form this whole time. That is not your uncle.”
“You mean…” Mabel looked at Stan with eyes full of sorrow. “I-in my dream… that was you, wasn’t it?”
Stan let out a long sigh before he could reply, grasping desperately for the right words, but all that came to him was a simple “I’m sorry, Mabel.”
“Don’t…” Mabel started, but the sentence trailed off without an end. Evidently Stan wasn’t the only one desperately scrambling for words.
“But we’ve got him now. Bill’s trapped in that circle, and one good shot from this-” Ford gestured awkwardly in Stan’s direction with his gun. “-will be enough to destroy him for good.”
Ford started aiming, but his arm was shaking and his fingers trembling and Dipper and Mabel were in front of him now, off to the side but only just- too close, much too close for comfort-
“Dipper, Mabel, for Pete’s sake get out of the way!”
Stan hadn’t meant for the words to be more than a mere whisper, hadn’t really expected the kids to heed his warning, but the words echoed through the stone chamber all the same, and all eyes turned to him.
Mabel looked at Ford, then at Stan, before taking a step forward. “No.”
“What?” Stan and Ford asked in near-unison.
“I said, no! I won’t get out of the way!” Mabel walked- no, ran towards the circle, passing through its chalk lines with ease before standing directly in front of Stan, her arms waving wildly in the air. “If you’re gonna shoot Grunkle Stan, you’re gonna have to go through me!”
Ford lowered his gun, though his grip on it remained tight.
“A-and me!” Dipper didn’t move quite as fast as Mabel had, and his eyes stayed glued to the ground until after he had navigated the last of the chalk lines, but when he turned to face Ford, his gaze was just as fierce as his sister’s. “You’ll have to go through me first.”
“Don’t you see what he’s doing?” Ford’s voice was hoarse and anguished. “Bill knows you care about Stan, he’s- he’s using that against us, using that to-”
“No. No, no, no, no, no.”
Dipper and Mabel looked up at Stan as he spoke, and Stan took that opportunity to grab them both, holding them at arm’s length away from him. They felt light as a feather, their weight barely even registering to him, and though they squirmed and struggled it was a cinch to keep them more or less in place.
“Neither of you pipsqueaks are dying on my account, got it?”
The only response Stan got was a few noises of protest and one solid bite to the arm, but then, he hadn’t been expecting much else.
“You want to kill me, Ford? Well, here’s your chance. Got a nice, clean shot for you here. No shields, no distractions, no nothin’. Just get it over with so you and the kids can go about your lives already.” After a moment’s pause, Stan added, “And for God’s sake, don’t close your eyes when you shoot this time.”
Stan locked eyes with his brother; Ford was doing an admirable job of keeping a neutral expression. For a moment, Stan thought he saw the gun moving out of the corner of his eye, thought he saw it rising up to point his way once more-
Clang!
The gun hit the ground near Ford’s feet, and Ford’s now-empty hands were shaking violently.
“I... I’ve been an idiot, haven’t I, Stanley?”
“Yup.” Stan loosened his grip on Dipper and Mabel, and as the two stood by his side, Stan couldn’t help but break out into a grin. “And here I thought you were supposed to be the smart one.”
Ford smiled back at Stan, and the sight made his heart soar. “Evidently not.”
“I think this calls for a GROUP HUG!”
Stan winced a little as Mabel shrieked into his ear; she may have felt light in his hands, but her voice was clearly as loud as ever. “Mabel, I don’t think F-”
“Well, if you insist...”
Ford walked towards Stan, his steps slow and deliberate as he stepped between the chalk lines. Dipper and Mabel grabbed onto Stan and embraced him tightly, and once Ford entered the center circle they embraced him as well. Stan was slow to embrace them back, half-expecting that his arm would pass through them as it had before, but no, they were there and they were real and he could feel their warmth as they clung to him and if he were still human Stan might have been concerned that Mabel’s tight grip was going to cut off his circulation, but that was one small upside of the situation, that he wouldn’t have to worry about that anymore...
Stan wasn’t sure when, exactly, Ford joined the hug, but soon enough Stan realized that the kids alone couldn’t account for all the limbs latching onto him, and once he focused on it he could tell that yes, there was definitely a six-fingered hand patting him on the back. For one shining moment they were all there, all together, all hugging, and Stan knew deep down that despite all the shit he’d gone through, things were going to be okay, at least more or less.
Then Mabel lifted her hands into the air and screamed “GROUP HUG!” again and the group broke apart a little bit, though they were still close, still nearly touching as they faced one another in the circle.
Stan was the first to speak up after that.
“So, uh, Ford, you said something earlier about this circle making me physical, right? How’s all that work?”
Ford nodded and took a breath before replying. “It’s a summoning circle, it binds demons- which, in this case means you I suppose- I, I still don’t know how that works-” Stan was pretty sure that even if he hadn’t been looking right at Ford, he still would have felt the force of his brother’s wide-eyed gaze as he hesitated for a moment and looked him at him up and down before continuing. (Stan glanced downward for a brief moment and realized that his feet still weren’t quite touching the floor.) “-anyway, it binds demons to the physical plane temporarily, until one of two things happens: either we make a deal-”
“Not happening.” Stan interjected.
“Or... or the summons runs out of time.”
“And then these numbskulls-” Stan wrapped one arm around Dipper and the other around Mabel. “-won’t be able to see me anymore?”
“Not unless we perform another summoning, no.”
“Alright. So.” Stan’s grasp on Dipper and Mabel grew slightly tighter. “You’re the brainiac here, Ford, so tell me. How long have we got?”

Chapter Six: Still Into You
“I wanted you first.”
Rachel’s eyes fluttered open as she tried to slow her breathing. Lifting her head from his shoulder, she cupped his face gently. She never realized how green his eyes were. “What?” She asked panting.
Gar rested his forehead to her own. “I wanted you first.” He whispered, eyes drifting closed as he shivered in the aftermath. He pulled her closer to him, groaning as her legs tangled around his waist again. “I think I fell for you after I got to see all the different sides of you in Nevermore.”
She smirked at the all most forgotten memory. “I just think you liked the fact that Happy laughed at your jokes.”
“I did.” He chuckled breathily. “I got to see the girl beneath the cloak, and I loved all the pieces of her.”
Violet eyes opened slowly. She rested her head in the crook of his neck and him tight against her chest. Her hands traced patterns up and down his back as she enjoyed the feeling of his warmth.
“I still love her.” Gar confessed softly.
Rachel ignored the stab of guilt at his words. The warm delusion her orgasm provided was slipping away as reality flooded her veins. “I love you, too.” She confessed sadly. Placing her arms on his shoulders, she pushed him off her. Rachel slide off the counter, collecting her clothes from the kitchen floor. “It’s too late though.”
“What?” Naked and stunned, he stood by the counter.
“It’s too late.” She sighed, pulling her shirt back on. “You’re getting married in four months.” Pulling her pants back on, she walked over to the sink to splash water on her face and rinse her mouth out.
“So?”
Rachel froze eyes wide. “So?”
“I’ll break up with her.”
“We’re supposed to be stuffing and addressing envelopes tomorrow.” She scuffed, wiping her face off with a kitchen towel. Frustrated, she threw it across the room. “And, we’re working on centerpieces, the menu board, seating chart-“
Gar leaned against the counter, folding his arms across his chest. “Well, I think it would be better if I called it off before the invitations go out.”
“How are you so nonchalant about this?”
“How am I supposed to be?” He answered.
“Upset, angry, confused…” Rachel paused, feeling her adrenaline and panic rise. “Distressed!?”
“How can I be anything but happy finally knowing the woman I love, and have loved for years, loves me back?” Gar explained tenderly. “Especially, when I’d given up on the idea of us. I moved on with Terra because...” He shrugged. “What else what was I supposed to do?”
“I’m not going to pretend I have the answers for this.” Rachel ignored the excited butterflies at the thought of a future with him. “You’re engaged.”
“And you’re about be engaged.”
Ouch. “That’s my point.” Rachel gestured. “We’re not able to explore this option.”
“Who says?”
“I’m done with this conversation.” She decided, picking up his clothes and tossing them at him. “I’m going to go shower. And by the time I come back to my kitchen to get a glass of wine, you’ll be gone and back with your fiancée, and we can forget this happened.”
He called out, trying to stop her from walking past him. “Rae-“
“Goodbye Garfield.”
“You better be bloody dying.”
“No.” Rachel sighed, rolling to her back as she clutched her phone to her ear. After she’d kicked Gar out of her apartment, she showered, eaten a box of freezer burnt mozzarella sticks, finished the bottle of wine she’d bought and plus one she had in the cabinet, then tried to sleep without her guilty conscious nagging her. “But I think I’m going to hell.”
“Have you forgotten you’re half demon?” Though sleepy, Toni’s wit was still sharp. “I’m pretty sure it’s a guarantee.”
The violet haired woman decided to ignore her friend’s sarcasm. “I think I actually may have earned my spot.” She sighed. “Pretty sure Trigon still thinks nepotism for the weak, even in hell.”
“I’m halfway around the world. I can’t help you hide the body, just teleport it to another dimension.”
Rachel wasn’t sure how to respond to this statement.
Toni yawned, shuffling around. “If you wanna dunk it in acid or something, we can do that when I’m in town for the wedding.”
“Seriously?” Rachel paused, shaking her head. “We’re really having this conversation?”
“You said you’re going to hell…”
“So you jump to murder?!”
“What the hell am I supposed to think?”
“You’re not supposed to think I’m a murderer.”
“Honestly Rae,” Toni started. “What am I supposed to think? You’re calling me panicked, rambling, and crazy ass early in the morning. I’m going to jump to murder. I’m your best friend, so I am the person you’d call to help you hide the body.”
The violet haired woman dragged a hand over face, stressed. She didn’t have time for witty banter. Normally, this would be amusing. “I fucked up.” She sighed. “I fucked up, and I don’t know what to do.”
“Oh god,” Toni gasped softly, hearing the severity of the situation. “Did you cut up Terra’s wedding dress?”
“Metaphorically,” Rachel confessed. “Gar and I had sex.”
Toni paused. “You mean Garth, your boyfriend. Your boyfriend who’s been emailing me pictures of engagement rings because he’s trying to pick the perfect one out for you.”
“No I meant Gar as in Garfield, who is not my boyfriend.”
“I’m going to pretend I didn’t hear that.”
“Toni…”
“Nope.” Toni insisted. Rachel could imagine her shaking her head. “I want no part of this. I trust you’re going to do the right thing.”
Rachel was tempted to ask what exactly was the right thing. She was torn between what felt right and what she was expected to do.
“After the ceremony, we can go out and get drunk,” Toni assured. “My treat.”
“Thank you so much for volunteering to do this.” Terra smiled, setting the stack of envelopes in front of Rachel. “I tried to hire a calligrapher, but the rush fee cost more than getting the invitations printed!”
“She didn’t volunteer.” Jinx snickered, stuffing envelopes from her seat across from them.
“True.” Rachel shrugged with a small smirk on her lips. “It’s not my fault I know calligraphy,” She looked at the list of guests, dipping her quill in the gold ink. “And I am happy to do it.” She decided her penance was to, happily, do everything within her power to make sure this wedding happened.
“Doesn’t hurt that you got laid last night.” Jinx grinned, sneakily.
The violet haired woman felt her blood go cold. She was thankful Jinx made that little remark after she finished the name on the envelope.
“Celebratory?” Kori grinned, from her seat. The redhead was assigned to working on the seating plan.
“There isn’t a ring on her finger.” Terra commented, without taking another look.
“That doesn’t mean anything.” Kori insisted as she continued writing. “It could need to be resized.”
“I am not engaged.” Rachel informed, them moving to the next envelope.
“Yet!”
“And I’m just in a good mood, is that so unusual?”
“Yes.” Terra and Jinx said together.
Kori grinned sheepishly. “I would have to agree.”
“You also have a hickie on your shoulder.”
“It’s not a hickie.” Rachel insisted. “It’s a bruise from aerial yoga. I decided to check out a class last night and one of the straps got caught on my shoulder.” If they didn’t buy the lie, Garth wouldn’t. Good thing it was still cold enough for thick sweaters and turtlenecks.
“Ouch.” Terra confirmed, reviewing her lists.
“Looks like a hickie.” Jinx pressed.
“Because you’re a pervert.” Rachel quipped back as she continued to write.
“Pervert,” Jinx shrugged, smiling cheekily. “Free spirit- Whatever. I appreciate good work that looks like good work.”
“Exercise injury.” Rachel reminded as she continued to work. “Didn’t get laid. Garth worked late last night, and I went to yoga.”
“That’s depressing.”
“Hey leave her alone.” Terra defended, pointing her pen at the pink haired woman. “Gar and I haven’t had sex since the engagement party. At least she has something to relieve stress, wedding planning doesn’t do the pinch.”
“Geez.” Jinx flinched. “That was over two months ago.”
Rachel looked to the envelope she was working on, ignoring the guilt she felt.
“You guys are busy with wedding stuff.” Kori assured. “Richard and I went through that. Wedding planning is stressful, and the boys work crazy hours.”
“He didn’t get home until six this morning.” Terra commented. “He showered, changed his clothes, and went to the gym.” She sighed. “I think he’s getting cold feet.”
“I don’t think so.” Rachel added. “This,” She gestured at the plethora of wedding materials around the small living room. “Is a lot.”
“It’s not like he has to do anything.” Jinx snorted, sitting another envelope in front her Rachel. “He just has to pay people-“
“Steve and Rita are taking care of the venue and reception costs, thankfully.” Terra added.
“Well,” JInx drawled. “All he has to do is get a tux and show up.”
“That is the groom’s job.” Kori giggled. “I did all the planning for my wedding. Richard really didn’t care. I promise, the day after the wedding you both are going to breathe a big sigh of the relief.”
“Whoa.”
The women looked up to see Gar stopping in the doorway with his gym bag on his shoulder. His living room was littered with color swatches, faux flowers, vases, bags, and many little trinkets.
“Speak of the devil.” Jinx laughed. “Welcome to the party.”
“Party?” He questioned, stepping over the pile of papers and walking over to the table they sat at. “What is all this stuff?”
Rachel could feel his eyes on her as he pressed a kiss to Terra’s forehead. She continued writing.
“Centerpiece ideas, tablecloth and napkin swatches, wedding favors, invitations-“
“I thought we were going to wait a couple weeks to send those out?” Gar asked, picking up one of the invitations. “The wedding is four months away. We’ve got plenty of time.”
Terra shook her head. “Less than four months. We didn’t send out save the date cards and the caterers a count for plates, so these need to go out preferably as soon as possible.”
“Yea, but I thought you wanted a calligrapher to address them.”
“Calligrapher would have to charge a couple hundred for a rush order, and Rachel graciously offered to address them for us.” Terra smiled, pointing to the woman’s handy work. “I figured if we could get these addressed before the weekend is over, I could mail them out Monday.”
“Let’s wait until the end of the month.” Gar pushed, leaning between Rachel and Terra as he pretended to examine Rachel’s calligraphy. “These look nice.”
“Gar, some of these have to mailed outside the country.”
“We could just to digital invites.”
“No, not for a formal wedding.” Kori frowned from her seat.
Gar sighed. “Can we-“
Rachel knew where this conversation was going. She quickly dipped her quill in the ink, jerking her arm to send the gold ink spilling across the the table and splashing on the blonde man’s shirt. “Shit! I’m sorry. I was rushing.” She interrupted, throwing paper on top of the ink she spilled.
“It’s alright.” Terra shrugged. “I got another bottle just in case.”
“Thankfully, the invitations are okay.” Kori noted, moving the ones that had been completed across the table.
“I’m gonna get some salt.” Rachel commented standing up. “That should help get the rest of this ink.”
“I think the paper got it all.” Terra checked the table.
“You should probably wash your hands too, Midas.” Jinx joked, looking at her gold covered hands.
“Think it will get it off my shirt?” Gar asked following Rachel into the kitchen.
Rachel walked over to the sink, flipping the faucet on with the back of her hand. “Are you insane?” She whispered, knowing the sound of the water would drown out their conversation. “What the hell are you doing?”
“I told you,” Gar whispered. “I’m breaking up with her.”
“We can’t be together.”
“You said it yourself. It’s not an option right now because we’re both in relationships.”
“Exactly.” She emphasized.
“So, I’m trying to make this work. I am getting out of my relationship.” He pleaded, scrubbing at the front of his shirt. “I want to be with you.”
“You don’t know me!” Her voice was low but harsh. “We’ve barely said anything to each other since we’ve moved out of the tower, and yet you’re willing to end an engagement over a one night stand?”
“It was more than that.”
“We had sex.” Her voice dropped, her eyes shifted to the doorway to the room where his fiancée and their friends were. “A lot old emotions came up.”
“So, let’s deal with it.”Gar pushed, tossing the rag into the sink. “Let’s see if we want this.”
Rachel sighed, shaking the water from her hands. Hands pressed on the edge of the sink, she hunched over. “So, what? Let’s date?”
“How else are we going to know?”
“Sure, let’s date while my boyfriend is about to propose to me and you’re getting married in a few weeks.”
“I am trying to break it off.”
“In a room, full of her bridesmaids and in front of the bridesmaid you’re cheating on her with? Classy, Gar, real classy.”
“Then what do you want me to do?”
“I want you to think about this.” Rachel furiously scrubbed her hands. “Really, really, think about what we’re doing. You can’t break this off.”
“This situation is already shit storm, let’s not make it more complicated by dragging it out.” Gar sighed. “But, fine,” He shrugged. “I won’t break if off.”
She breathed a sigh of relief.
“But, I’m not giving up on us either.”

Knitting to Coding!
Second World War! A big deal for the world history but more than that it became important to me, as I revealed the fact that Knitting was used as an ‘Espionage language’ and since then it became the hobby for women and not men anymore! I started to think about what knitting could mean? Can a code really be knitted? I guess, after learning these facts I couldn’t stop myself from thinking how and what kind of information could have been coded by people through sweaters, socks, scarfs, etc! Accidentally! during this time, I attended a lecture in my faculty by the architects who re-built our Faculty building and the reasoning behind it! Getting through the lecture, he said something which I will never forget, as it literally changed my course of actions and perspective! He said, ‘Do you guys know, Portsmouth was very important during Second World War? Portsmouth was also extensively bombed by Germans during the continuous airstrikes through years of Second World War. Unfortunately, the place where our faculty building stands today, during that time was a residential area with rows of houses; which were bombed! and most of them were destroyed’. This information made me crave more insights on Second World War, as now it was not only connected to me via a hobby of knitting but by ‘home’! I lived in this city for 6 years! Even though one would argue that my homeland is India and will always remain India, however, a part of my heart belongs to this place now! It’s my Home!
Therefore, I made few trips to Civic library, in order to obtain maps of bombed areas in the city during Second World War and looked for diaries from survivors. Some of the stories took me in the time, I felt like I was walking in the same phase of history; they were so beautifully and poetically written, while others were teary and sad - it mentioned about loosing home or fear of never seeing their loved ones. Those questions which I had in mind while reading about Second World War surfaced again: What knitting could mean? and Can a code really be knitted? I started looking at coding languages and soon after I landed onto ‘Morse code’. I also found a few articles mentioning how Morse coding was used during the war for communication and how women were hired by British Intelligence to script codes through knitting. Hence, I found an international Morse code elements for all letters, digits, accented letters and punctuation marks. (FYI: Morse code is named for Samuel F. B. Morse, an inventor of the telegraph. Morse code is a character encoding scheme used in telecommunication that encodes text characters as standardized sequences of two different signal durations called dots and dashes or dits and dahs.)
IMG1: Morse Code characters
The question now was, What do I code? a letter? a sentence? a paragraph? and how do I knit them? I began with my heart: the word ‘Home’. I coded ‘home’ in dots and dashes. So the first set of questions were fulfilled by now; leading me onto the second question of How to? For this, I tried to knit a dot and dash and dash and dot in knitting patch. This came out really nice, but I did not wanted to continue over black and silver and so I tried to advance my experiment by coding the same word through on a white background with green and yellow thread instead - just to see how different it would read when done like that. After this, I paused! I looked! but I felt very exposed, as if just by seeing this patch with dots and dashes, world would know what I’m saying; even though I wanted to communicate but feeling less exposed. Hence, I tried to conceal this dots and dashes through the entire row instead of few stitches. Gradually, my word ‘Home’ became more like a scarf instead of a knitting patch which you can show to the world by holding in hand - this scarf was wrapped around my neck! making me feel warm as I would be, when in home.

After my meeting with Alison Ellen, I had started to think: How can I draw my knitting pieces? Will they look different to architectural drawings? If they will, how different will they look? To satisfy this hunch, I started looking/reading books on how to draw knitting? Can they be done on normal plain white paper or do they require a specific grid to follow? I soon after ended up with a book called: ‘Knitting: Stitch-led Design’ by Alison Ellen, where she gives a step-by-step instructions with explanations, charts, diagrams, photos, and techniques to discuss in depth and to understand different outcomes and how 'problems' can be used creatively. This book really helped me to learn how to read diagrams or charts, in other words drawings made for knit pieces. In the process of acquiring this skills to read these charts, made me curious, if I can try and make a drawing for my own knit piece in order to see how different these representations will look in comparison to the haptic feel of the knit.
Furthermore, while thinking on how to make this drawings, I realized that I needed some data such as how many rows I had cast, how many loops/stitch I had on my needle, how can I symbolically represent different type of stitches that I had cast on? Is there a dictionary of symbols where it not only becomes a language for me, but is universally understood and accepted?
IMG5: Data gathered by counting number of stitches/loops and rows
I looked for books, where symbols have been shown and used. Alison’s book, Knitting: Stitch-led design also included a brief introduction with the basic patterns symbolically. So I got the basic ingredients ready but then the tough question was: Where do I draw? i.e. plain paper? grid paper? graph paper? and with what? pencil? pen? brush? This was harder to answer than I realized, but eventually after trying all, I felt comfortable with squared grid paper! and surprisingly, since the beginning with the idea of drawing, I always picked pencil unconsciously! So there was my answer! I hereby had data, medium and method but the only thing missing at the time was reasoning of Why this was interesting or why was I so curious in the first place! and by doing so What will I achieve? But as they say, ‘Follow your instincts, they take you to the most beautiful places you have ever imagined even existed!’ so perhaps I followed my intuition and let it lead the way!

I just wanted to get this off my chest: I am convinced the marauders made friendship bracelets for each other. Like, they'd sit in a circle like 10yo girls at a sleepover and make friendship bracelets for each other. I wanted to tell you and know what you think of this.
First of all, we have to remember there wasn’t a lot to do in the 1970s, especially without magic during summers…so YES I ACCEPT THIS @paisley-pear. Because you know James. He has to be engaged all the time. He can’t be bored. He has to be doing something. The perfect extrovert. The outgoing Gryffindor. He always is playing pranks not just to amuse others but to amuse himself.
“What’s that?” James asked aggressively; his voice, as always, was too loud for the tiny space of Peter’s bedroom.
“What’s what?” Peter asked, shuffling over to the bookcase to try to shove a tissue box in front of the bright purple title that had caught James’ eye.
It was no good. James caught up the volume around Peter’s curls and yanked the cover open with a brutality that made Remus - a long time mender of his favorite battered secondhand books - wince.
“Friendship…bracelets?” James sounded out the words as Peter tried to hurriedly stem the flood.
“That’s my sister’s. Shannon, you know. She’s always coming in here and leaving things around and I must have just -”
“What’s a friendship bracelet?” James demanded, interrupting as usual.
Peter fell silent, perplexed, and looked helplessly over at Sirius who was stretched out over the comforter of his twin bed, boots hanging off the end as he played with a long string of muggle chewing gum.
Sirius glanced back over at Peter under a lock of dark hair that had fallen out of his carefully styled bangs. “Don’t look at me,” he griped. “You know you can’t leave things like that out around James.”
Peter gaped at this unfairness. “I didn’t,” he began, but James interrupted again as Remus went wearily to the foot of the bed, shoved Sirius’ legs out of the way, and sat down. Peter’s bedroom was small, and the bed was the only furniture to sit on.
“So if they’ve got bracelets, right, then why do you need a book about them?”
“It’s a book of…of patterns and stuff,” Peter said helplessly. “Look, I don’t know! Like I said, it’s Shan’s. I’ve never even opened it!”
“Well why have you got so many pages on patterns?” James asked in perplexment.
“I dunno!” Peter said bewildered.
“And all these charts. Seems a bit barmy to put all these charts on the patterns in here. Don’t know anyone who likes bracelets that much.”
Peter laughed weakly. “Yeah. Course. Well they’re hard to make anyway it’s hours of-”
“Wait, these are making instructions?” James said sharply. A huge grin hooked from ear to ear as he began thumbing through the patterns with greater interest. “Really….”
Remus groaned and leaned back against the wall. Sirius only rolled his eyes. “I told you. I told you.”
“See here?” James was thrusting the book under Peter’s nose, as he was still the only one standing in his immediate, energetic vicinity. “It says the colors mean things. Like this? This one is Remus. White for wisdom, and yellow for smarts.”
Remus tried not to look pleased, but he couldn’t help sitting back up. Grumblingly, Sirius swung his legs down and sat up too, swallowing the gum with an audible gulp.
“Oh and here…we’ve got light grey. Patience and understanding. Maybe that’s why your eyes are grey, Moony!”
This time Remus did roll his eyes.
“Do me!” Sirius said suddenly. “What colors have I got?”
“Well obviously you’ve got dark blue,” said James sniggering a bit.
“What? Why!” Sirius looked anxious. “Wot’s that mean?”
“Fertility,” James tried not to choke, but when Remus snorted, the three of them lost it and howled as Sirius repeated:
“I don’t get it! What’s so funny! Is this because I snogged Violet? She was a lousy snog! What’s so funny? Stop laughing!”
“Well, Peter you’d be orange for enthusiasm,” James beamed.
Peter felt a little shy. “Really? You think so?”
“Course,” Sirius butted in, slightly ruffled. “You’re always game for the pranks.”
“And here,” he said to Sirius a bit more kindly. “You can also have red in yours for strength.”
“What have you got?” Peter asked, since James was obviously dying to be asked.
“Hang on,” frowned Remus, who had up to now been silent. “You haven’t given Peter both of his. And I’ve gotten three.”
“Well we can take one of yours back. You can just be white and grey, like the moon.”
Remus went very white, and pressed his lips together.
“Nah,” Sirius said, reflexively bumping Remus’ shoulder to pull him out of his anxiety and guilt. “Let him keep the yellow. Else it’ll be too boring.”
“Fine,” said James, oblivious as usual. “How about pink for Peter? It means friendship.”
Peter snatched for the book. “It does not! You’re making that up!” But there it was, as James’ smug finger pointed out, in black and white.
“I can’t have pink,” Peter moaned. “That’s a girls colour, that is.”
“Colour is just colour,” Remus said patiently.
“Well you’re alright what with having normal colours,” Peter replied sulkily.
“And if anyone should have orange for enthusiasm, it should be you, Prongs,” Sirius added.
“Hey!” Peter blushed. “Now I haven’t got any!”
“Give the book here,” Remus said commandingly, and Peter handed it over automatically. “I’ll figure it out.”
There was a breathless moment while Remus studied the purple pages with their white textboxes as seriously as he had studied any star chart.
“All right then,” he said authoritatively. “We’re all getting two. I’ll take white and grey. Sirius can have the dark blue and yellow. James can have the red and black - black is for silence.”
“But I’m not silent!” James protested at once.
All three of his friends looked at him sardonically. “We know,” Remus said finally. “It can help you grow. And Peter - you can have orange and green. Green means fortune.”
Peter grinned suddenly. “Yeah, alright then.”
Remus carefully closed the book and put it on the windowsill by the bed that Peter used in lieu of a night stand since the door opened too far in to be able to have one.
“That was stupid,” Sirius said after a moment. “We just had a pretty intense debate over what dumb colour chart we were in a girl’s plaiting book.”
“It wasn’t stupid,” protested James at once. He turned to Peter. “Where’s Shannon’s room?”
“Down the hall,” Peter said without thinking, but when James bolted for the door he trailed after him anxiously. “Why?”
“Well obviously,” James threw over his shoulder. “We’ve got to get the string and stuff to make these.”
It was Remus who found it, in the end, after a ten minute search through a child’s bedroom. It was in a large purple sandcastle bucket on her miniature plastic desk. Everything was in a snarl.
“Let’s take the lot,” James said decisively, and they trooped back to Peter’s room and sat in a circle on the floor, Sirius toeing off his combat boots and Remus pulling off his sweater as they peered together around the purple book, begging each other not to turn the page yet as they meticulously knotted and braided each other’s friendship bracelets.
A decade later, deep in Azkaban prison, Sirius fingers the almost snapping threads of faded blue and yellow, knowing that somewhere a tired failed interviewee was doing the same.
