All of a sudden, Meatball is the human and the 100th and our girls in the ATA are dogs.
What breed is everyone? Is Buck a golden retriever?
OOOOOOH. This is fun!!! And I have put a lot of thought into this, hahahahahahahaha. So I hope you don't hate it! 🤣
I think Buck’s your rescue dog! He’s soft, but he’s had a hard life, and despite all that he’s just trying to do the right and honest thing. I think he’s a mix between a shepherd and a mountain dog of some kind that looks absolutely adorable, but used to live on the street.
Now Bucky, I think he’s your golden. He’s the helper dog you get your rescue to teach them how to be a dog and give them a friend, someone to show you how to experience the world. He’s lovable, he’s loyal, and he loves to run around and chase a ball, and he’s so so patient.
Dorothy gives me the Border Collie vibe. She’s got a pretty loud bark when need be, she herds her girls and the rest of the pilots she’s in charge of, she goes up against anyone she needs to for them, and she’s super super smart.
Rose totally screams Afghan to me. She’s so smart and independent and confident, and she’s driven and suspicious of people, but she’s also a little in her head sometimes, and may seem a little ditzy or self absorbed, when she’s actually far from it. She’s loyal and she doesn’t trust just anyone. And she has really, really great hair.
I think a Brittany fits Amelia. She’s energetic and loving, she gives everyone a chance and she’s never met someone who she couldn’t make into a friend. She’s smart, she wears her heart on her sleeve, she’s a really fast learner and one of the quickest to move through the ranks in the ATA, and she doesn’t let a whole lot get her down.
I don't know why, but I cannot get a Pug out of my head when I think of George. Or a Corgi. Like, he's just so fun and witty and he's always a good time. He's clever and charming and fairly docile (until provoked) and he commands a room so well.
Curt kinda feels like a Jack Russell Terrier, honestly. Or maybe something crossed with a Chihuahua. He's lively and alert, he sometimes has a little bit of an attitude, but he's really fast and has so much courage and spunk and he's so dedicated to his friends.
Ok, hang with me here, but I think Rosie's 100% a Standard Poodle. He's sociable, energetic, athletic, and beyond intelligent. He's showy and smooth but he's also sweet and hard-working. Anyone looking at him would think he's a total teddy bear, but he's actually a machine who is never afraid to do the right thing and follows orders like a champ. His nickname is Twinkle Toes, he's a total poodle.
And, finally, our girl. Our damaged but in the process of healing heroine, Stella Frank. I have gone back and forth on so many different dogs, because I couldn't find just the right one. I briefly considered the Doberman, but Frank's a little too hesitant for that breed, I think. I considered a smaller dog in the terrier family or even a beagle, but she's not that friendly or loud, and I even looked into a Dalmatian, but I'm not quite sure "energetic" is the right word for Frank. Anxious? Nervous? Needing to move her body so she doesn't get a little destructive? Yes. She's not jumping up and down, running around in circles excited.
BUT, there was one dog I just kept coming back to: the Greyhound. She's pretty mild, but a little standoffish and sensitive. She doesn't respond well to criticism or harsh/loud words, and her former life wasn't a great one. Which, I think many Greyhounds also experience. She doesn't like strangers, she can be a little off-putting and straight faced, but once she's comfortable and familiar she's fun to be around and affectionate. She wants to be part of a team, rather than a cog in a machine, and she likes wide, open spaces where she can be as free as she wants to be.

Hi, hello, it’s me again here.
So, of course my competitive butt had to take my own comment about Yuki/Alex as a challenge and now I have 12k or more of a draft.
But I don’t know if I’m doing it correctly, I NEED HELP (also mental help, possibly). I was mostly inspired by AJR’s song ‘Turning out’, which I highly recommend because it’s A MASTERPIECE.
The general idea is: Yuki finds a stray puppy during a storm and he brings it to the prt clinic at the ground floor of his apartment complex where Alex has just started working.
They start to get to know each other but Yuki is still nit sure if he actually likes Alex or if he sees him as a best friend, since he’s never cared about actually getting into a relationship so he had never actually looked at the difference between love and in love.
But it’s also a big period of his life because both Charles and Pierre have moved out of the apartment that they used to all (as in Yuki, Pierre and Charles) live in during university because they have started working and have decided to move in either their respective partners.
Charles is already engaged with Carlos (of course there’s Charlos, it’s my fic) and Pierre hints at proposing to George (I don’t know where this ship came from in my mind but I wanted it, so I wrote about it), and Yuki is starting to feel lonely. [also, other side-couples are Sewis and Landoscar]
He has the company of a puppy called Kuri (because it’s Japanese for chestnut, and I imagine Yuki with a poodle with chestnut fur) and Alexander Albon, funny and tall and easygoing but he doesn’t know what it means to him.
So, lots of introspection as it’s common in my fics and fluff because Yalex has to be a comfort ship, sorry. (And I’m also planning on smut, hehe)
Anyway, here is a little snippet, let me know what you think about it (keep in mind that I am NOT British and I do NOT have a beta reader):
—
Karma may be a little fickle tonight, but it certainly pulls him to its side when the heavy rain turns into a light drizzle halfway through his way back to his apartment complex – which isn’t a long journey, per se, but Yuki surely isn’t one to look into a gifted horse’s mouth.
So, by the time he has reached the closed doors of the vet clinic, he is shivering much less than before and the biting cold in his bones has turned into an uncomfortable chill shiver running down his spine from time to time.
What is annoying is the hair plastered down to his eyes dripping wet and the fact that he can’t even try and move a few strands out because his arms are already stuffed full of the sleeping body of a tiny, harmed puppy.
Good God.
The doors stay closed when he finds a sheltered place under the brick's roof of the entrance, but Yuki knows for a fact that Sebastian is never able to leave this place until it’s ten in the evening, because there’s always some animal staying the night after an operation, and he would probably rather close the clinic for good instead of leaving them alone for more than eight hours.
Yuki had never got it, honestly, the sleep and the warm comfort of his bed seems like a much better prospect than staying around sleeping animals in pain, but now that he’s looking at the limp tiny thing in his arms, he may start to understand.
“Sebastian!” he calls out, reaching with his pinky finger to the doorbell. He cries his name a bunch of times, because the rain is starting to fall again and his voice might get covered soon enough, and there’s no way that Yuki is going to wait for him to close everything up – that might take hours, the puppy may be hurting too much by then. “Sebastian, please, it’s an emergency” he must sound like a possessed man, and the lady on the first floor will probably have something to complain about in their next condominium meeting. But she always talks too loudly on her phone on Sunday mornings when Yuki is trying to sleep away a tremendous hangover, so she can honestly go fuck herself – respectfully.
It still takes a few more minutes and a few more desperate calls for the door to open and the dim yellow light of the waiting room to seep on the steps. Yuki slips inside without even waiting for it to open completely, clutching the jacket close to his chest and exhaling deeply through his nose when the warmth of the air-conditioned room finally engulfs him. The puppy sighs against his chest, so it must appreciate the change in temperature, too.
“See, I told you buddy I would get you safe. Yuki always keeps his promises” he says softly, shuffling the bundle of leather closer to his face. The puppy smells pretty bad, a mix of blood and dumpsters rubbish from London neighborhoods, but its tiny eyes are staring back at him all lucid and wide and full of fondness, like it can actually feel love for him, and Yuki can’t even consider the possibility of getting it too far away from his nose.
Yuki may have just fallen in love, too. But it also might be the adrenaline of acting like a freaking hero in a rainstorm when he can barely reach the top cupboard of his kitchen with the help of a stepladder.
But Disney never made a movie about short heroes; he never had a figure to look up to during his childhood.
“Now Sebastian here will take really good care of you, yes? He won’t ever hurt you. Right Seb-” Yuki stops in his tracks when his gaze meets a pair of brown eyes that definitely do not belong to Sebastian, especially with the way he almost has to bend his neck in half to actually look at the face in front of him and not at the expanse of a broad chest hugged by a plain blue polo.
This is not Sebastian’s chest and not Sebastian’s hair and definitely not Sebastian’s lips and definitely definitely not Sebastian’s white coat. Oh.
“You’re not Sebastian” Yuki says dumbly.
Surely enough, there’s a tall lanky guy standing in front of the now closed door, looking only slightly stunned at Yuki’s sudden outburst, like it’s normal to have someone barging inside a vet clinic at half past nine on a Thursday night in the middle of yet another London’s rainy day.
Oh god, but what if this guy is the one who actually barged in? What if Yuki has just uncovered a burglar? But would a burglar open the door for him?
The guy stares at Yuki in silence for two long seconds before he starts patting his abdomen, pretending to check his whole appearance. “Oh, fuck I’m not Sebastian!” the guy exclaims, looking frantically at his fingers, clenching and unclenching his fists like he’s trying to make out the shape of them.
Yuki snorts, shaking his head. This guy could never be a burglar even if his life depended on it, it seems. Besides, he might be slim enough to pass through anything, but he’s still too tall to go unnoticed.
“No, I’m not Sebastian” tall guy says, chuckling to himself. “I’m Alex. You almost made me have an existential crisis right then and there.”
“Identity theft is not a joke”
Alex raises an amused eyebrow at him, like he’s trying to make out the space where Yuki fits in his vision, and he smiles, wide and bright with big teeth and all. “You’re a cultured man, Yuki.”
Yuki furrows his eyebrows in confusion, “How do you know my name?” He asks, looking at the puppy in his arms to make sure- oh, right. “Oh”
Alex laughs again, his eyes crinkling at the corners. He must have a tendency for it or maybe it’s just Yuki who looks funny in general. A lot of people have told him that in the past and he still doesn’t know if it’s a good or bad thing.
“You’re funny” Alex states, like it’s some kind of irrefutable axiom. He clasps his hands, taking a few steps forward to start inspecting the bundle between Yuki’s arms. “I heard there was an emergency.”
Instinctively, Yuki clutches the jacket closer, one finger gently caressing the single dot of white in the middle of the beige fur of his head. The puppy yelps softly, snuggling its little nose towards Yuki’s chest, and his heart swells like a balloon.
“Yeah, I really need Sebastian” Yuki says, “I mean, this little thing is hurt, and it really needs a vet.”
“Well, then, it’s a good coincidence I work here, no?” Alex smiles wide, teeth showing between his lips.
Yuki blinks at him. “Uh, no you don’t?” He says but it sounds more like a question than a statement. But, to be fair, he lives above the place, and he has known everyone around here for ages, he would’ve surely remembered someone as tall as this Alex, with such bright dyed hair and this adorable smile-
“Uh, yes I do?” Alex says back, grinning. “I mean, just since this morning. But officially I work here.”
“I’ve never seen you around. And I live here” Yuki says defensively, trying his very best to show at least a smidge of self-consciousness even though he will probably give up pretty easily if Alex keeps staring at him like this – big eyes, big smile, hair that look incredibly morbid.
He hasn’t seen a new face in a while, more so belonging to a cute guy, and there’s still a beer slowly swimming in his stomach, so he should be justified.
“I moved recently” Alex explains, not giving much information away to satiate Yuki’s curiosity. He arches an eyebrow, finally touching the sides of the jacket hanging from Yuki’s arms. Yuki lets him just because he doesn’t really know what to do anymore, and if the guy is really a vet as he’s claiming to be, then he should trust him more than himself.
It definitely is not because his brain is slowly turning to mush at their proximity.
“Now, let’s see what we have here” Alex says, carefully taking the jacket from his arms.
The puppy goes willingly without even whimpering once, instead snuggling happily as it’s deposited against the chest of a new stranger. Traitor, Yuki thinks, though he would probably react the same in its place.
“Hi little baby. How cute are we? So much” Alex coos gently, caressing with his index finger the same spot Yuki had been gently scraping earlier. The puppy gives another satisfied yelp. “Oh, are we hurt? Poor little thing. But now Alex will take good care of you, alright?”
Yuki just stands there looking at the interaction with his hands to the sides, suddenly feeling too empty after so long of hanging desperately on to the tiny animal. But it’s incredibly adorable and endearing the way Alex keeps comforting it, as if it can actually understand what he’s saying, its tiny tail wiggling against the jacket when he manages to scratch a good spot behind his ears.
The puppy must sense that Alex is a good person, and Yuki may be a little dramatic most of the time, but he probably trusts the puppy more than himself. Especially if it’s about a cute guy talking with a high-pitched voice to an adorable animal in pain.
“Now Alex will take you to the other room and we’ll check everything, yeah?” He looks at Yuki then, eyeing him up and down, probably taking in his conditions.
Only then Yuki realizes what he must look like, with his hair flat over his head, raindrops still sliding down his nose, the simple white T-shirt he had been wearing under the jacket now completely soaked, tight against his chest. His shoes make a weird squelching sound when he takes a step forward, his socks clinging uncomfortably to his toes and his pants scratching against his probably already bruised knees.
Fuck, he wanted to wear them for work, there’s no way he’ll wash them in time.
“Uh, sorry?” He mumbles, painfully aware of the puddle he has formed under his feet. He grips at the hem of his T-shirt, uselessly trying to straighten it out and immediately regretting it when his palms leave sticky red handprints in their wakes. Yeah, no, there’s no way this is recoverable.
Alex doesn’t seem angry about it, and as his gaze falls to the stained fabric, he frowns, concerned.
“It’s the puppy’s” Yuki says, cringing at the feeling of blood against his skin.
Oh God, it’s the puppy’s blood. A puppy’s blood is staining his clothes and his hands and he’s going to puke, isn’t he? Or worse, what if this cute guy thinks he hurt it? What if this cute guy thinks he is an attempted murderer? A murderer of puppies?
Yuki is honestly afraid of his own shadow most of the time, and he still sleeps with his night light on when there’s too many thunders outside, but how can he convince Alex of that without embarrassing himself even further?
To his delight, Alex smiles at him, shaking his head with a twinge of fondness that makes Yuki’s cheeks feel incredibly warm for the way he’s still shivering from the cold. “Come on, then” Alex says, turning around “You can clean up and dry off in front of the radiator.”
Yuki doesn’t have to be told twice.

Back to the Future (1985)
★★★★★
"Great Scott!" If there ever was a movie that could make time travel not only plausible but also incredibly entertaining, it's "Back to the Future." Strap yourself in, because we're about to take a whimsical journey through Hill Valley with Marty McFly and Doc Brown in this beloved 1985 classic.
From the moment Huey Lewis and the News' catchy tune, "The Power of Love," kicks in, you know you're in for an adventure of a lifetime. Marty McFly, played by the charismatic Michael J. Fox, is a teenager whose life takes an unexpected turn when he hops into Doc Brown's iconic DeLorean time machine, transformed into a stainless-steel spaceship. The DeLorean is so cool that even Doc can't resist saying, "The way I see it, if you're gonna build a time machine into a car, why not do it with some style?"
As we zip back to 1955, we're treated to a nostalgic trip through the '50s, complete with poodle skirts, jukeboxes, and some of the quirkiest characters ever put on screen. Marty's interactions with his young, bumbling parents, George and Lorraine, are both heartwarming and hilarious. The dialogue is peppered with unforgettable lines like, "Lorraine, you are my density," and "Marty, you're not thinking fourth-dimensionally!"
Of course, we can't forget the mad scientist himself, Doc Brown, played by the incomparable Christopher Lloyd. His wild hair and wilder inventions are a delight to behold. Doc's manic energy and insistence on calling Marty "a slacker" add an extra layer of humor to the film.
What sets "Back to the Future" apart is its perfect blend of sci-fi, comedy, and heart. Beneath the time-traveling shenanigans lies a touching story about family, friendship, and the importance of making the most of the time we have. As Doc says, "Your future is whatever you make it, so make it a good one!"
The action-packed climax at the "Enchantment Under the Sea" dance is nothing short of iconic, with Marty playing the guitar like a rock star and ensuring his parents fall in love, preserving the space-time continuum. It's a moment that'll have you cheering and dancing in your seat.
In the end, "Back to the Future" is more than just a movie; it's a ride through time that never gets old. Its charm, wit, and heartwarming message make it a classic that you'll want to revisit again and again. So, hop in your DeLorean, rev up the flux capacitor, and let this cinematic gem take you on a journey where you'll laugh, cry, and maybe even quote it endlessly. After all, as Doc Brown says, "Where we're going, we don't need roads!"

Day 41- Film: Scaramouche
Release date: June 27th, 1952.
Studio: MGM
Genre: Action/Adventure
Director: George Sidney
Producer: Carey Wilson
Actors: Stewart Granger, Eleanor Parker, Janet Leigh, Mel Ferrer
Plot Summary: We follow the adventures of Andre Moreau in pre-revolutionary France as he searches out his biological father, runs from the law with revolutionary friend Phileppe, tries to avenge Phileppe’s death at the hands of the Marquis de Maynes, hides out as famous comedian Scaramouch, and woos two different women.
My Rating (out of five stars): ***½
It took me awhile to really get into this movie, but once I did, I enjoyed it. It was the kind of light-hearted colorful historical epic you would expect from 1950s Hollywood. Flashy and splashy but not overly complex in terms of character or nuance. And certainly not overly concerned with historical accuracy! Some spoilers ahead.
The Good:
The fencing! The fencing! If there is one thing that elevates this film and makes it worth checking out, it’s the sword fighting. There’s lots of it, and it is all convincing and well-staged. (Except for the speed at which blood spurts out of people when they get slashed!) The actors all did pretty extensive training to learn how to make it realistic, and it shows. The sword fight at the end of the movie is the longest in Hollywood history, as far as I know.
This kind of goes with the above, but I absolutely loved the fact that the long swordfight at the end of the film had no non-diegetic music. The only sounds we heard were the swishes and clangs the swords made, the gasps of the crowd watching them, and the grunts from the two men as they battled with each other. It heightened the drama so much for me.
Mel Ferrer. He is one of my favorite actors of the time period. He’s so good at playing wounded sensitive brooding people! In this he was generally a bad guy, but I still loved him more than the actual hero!
Eleanor Parker. I always think of her as the Baroness in The Sound of Music, but in this movie she really stole my heart. She was just so captivating to watch at every moment- she was by far the most interesting female character in the film. Her luscious long red hair looked great as well. It was wonderful to see a woman who didn’t have a short tightly styled 1950s poodle cut!
I liked part of the ending. The fact that they didn’t kill the Marquis de Maynes made me really happy. I was dreading Mel Ferrer’s death and knew it must be coming. When he was spared, I was legitimately satisfied and relieved. It also made the end more interesting and unusual.
Janet Leigh was better in this than I expected. Her character was pretty boring, though.
The light-hearted vibe of the whole film. The film was just good fun, and it didn’t take itself too seriously.
The bad:
The incest? I know it ultimately wasn’t really incest because Granger and Leigh turned out not to be brother and sister. But when you spend almost the entire movie believing they are, it’s hard to turn off the disgust switch when they suddenly get married at the end! I just did not like it at all.
Granger got a little grating after a while. Maybe some of the stories I’ve heard about what a difficult person he was bled into my opinion of his character, but I didn’t totally like him. He seemed to be trying too hard to be devil-may-care charming. He was certainly hot, though, if you like the hunk-of-man-meat type.
Historical accuracy! Costumes were especially loosely authentic to say the least. But you don’t really expect a 1950s Hollywood epic to be especially historically accurate.
The plot could be overly tangled at times, and it took awhile for me to fully get into it.
And again, why did Granger have to marry Leigh?

The first Frenchman to enter Berlin...
... or at least, to enter Berlin during the official entry of Davout’s corps on October 25, 1806. This is a direct continuation of the first excerpt, again taken from “Erinnerungen eines Preußen aus der napoleonischen Zeit”. (And I feel like I have translated this before, but I could not find it again. Sorry if this is old news. The text is probably quite well-known anyway. But I still love the description!)
As we heard, young George’s brother had snuck away to and returned safely from the French camp, and his little brother greatly admired him for this feat. George’s brother had, however, not been alone:
There had been a lot of Berlin spectators in the camp, by the way, enjoying the hustle and bustle of the French, who had to prepare their meals most frugally, but who promised their entry on the following day and ordered for themselves to be well received.
Davout’s soldiers must have felt like animals in a zoo, being stared at like that. »Okay, Prussian, you may watch me eat my supper. But make sure you’re out in the street tomorrow and to applaud when we officially enter the city!«
Early in the morning of 25 October, all of Berlin was eagerly awaiting the arrival of the French troops; curious people gathered in the roundabout at the Hallisches Tor, and a lot of impatient people went out to the gate again.
A few hours passed, drums could be heard rolling in the distance, the sound came closer, and the road to Tempelhof flashed with thousands of bayonets. The magistrate in corpore, holding the keys of the city, had assembled; now the sound of drums and thunderous music shook the air, and all eyes turned towards the gate. The first French infantryman entered, I have often sketched him in life, he was a long, lean man, with a pale face topped by wild black hair, the first cause of our astonishment, accustomed as we were to well-powdered, regular curls and stiff plaits in soldiers. We were even more astonished by his clothes; his body was covered by a faded short coat, his head by a small weather-beaten hat, more red than black, and of indescribable shape, but worn so crookedly and boldly that this head and hat already struck us as a great curiosity. The trousers were of dirty canvas, badly torn, the feet bare, clad in torn shoes: a shaggy poodle, which he led by a rope, looked attentively at his mouth, with which he took bites from a large piece of bread, and occasionally threw something to the poodle; think of a soldier with a dog on a leash, and, what was more, with half a loaf of bread impaled on his bayonet, a goose hanging from his sword, and on his hat a tin spoon instead of the field sign. This original figure advanced alone, with an ordinary light step, but looked with large black eyes like a king at the hundreds who were staring back at him most curiously; fifty paces behind him, however, new figures caught our attention.
It’s descriptions like these that make me wonder how much of those detailed uniform charts of the Napoleonic era were ever actually put into practice. Judging from the description, the good man strutting in front of Davout's corps looked more like a mercenary of the Thirty Years' War than a Napoleonic infantryman.

Guilty
George Weasley x Reader
Gender: female
House: not specified
Summary: You have a nightmare and go to your boyfriend George Weasley’s room for comfort. It’s short, but it’s v cute and fluffy and I love it a lot.
Warnings: nightmare, bit of brutal depiction? idk, it’s pretty fluffy.
You wake up screaming. Ginny and Hermione are at your side, looking extremely concerned.
“J-just a bad dream,” you tell them, voice shaky.
Ginny gives you a sympathetic look and walks back to her bed. Hermione isn’t as easily convinced.
“Are you sure?” she frets. “What was it about - no, don’t tell me, I’m sure you don’t want to talk about it. Do you want a glass of water?”
You try to laugh, but it’s so forced it’s not convincing at all. “I’m fine, ‘Mione. Really.”
Hermione frowns, but follows Ginny over her mattress on the floor.
You wait until Ginny is softly snoring and Hermione’s breathing has deepened before quietly exiting the room and tip-toeing into the room your boyfriend, George, shares with his brother Fred.
You sit on his bed and watch his sleeping form. You know, it sounds creepy, but you need to be in his presence right now and you don’t want to wake him up. You run your fingers through his soft ginger hair gently, and he opens his eyes. He’s an incredibly light sleeper, especially compared to Fred.
He grins lazily at you. “Hello, love. To what do I owe the pleasure of my beautiful girlfriend waking me up?”
You sniffle, and his expression becomes worried when he notices the tear stains on your face. He sits up and runs his thumbs across your cheeks to wipe away your tears.
“Hey, what’s wrong, sweetheart?” he asks, his voice significantly softer than before.
“Nothing,” you tell him quietly. “Just-just a nightmare.”
George opens his arms and you climb into bed beside him, burying your head in his bare chest.
“Mind telling me what it was about?” he asks.
You sigh. “So a family friend of mine asked me to take care of their dogs. Truly gorgeous dogs, fluffy little poodles, each of which had their fur dyed a different color. And every time I would touch a dog, its leg would break. And I couldn’t help it, couldn’t fix it without making it worse, so I just…” Your lip trembles and you take a deep breath, saying the next bit in a whisper. “I just walked away. And left them there, bruised and black and lame. And I know it was just a dream, but I can’t help feeling so… so guilty, Georgie. I feel awful for what I did, even if it wasn’t real.”
George doesn’t respond, just runs his fingers through your hair, whispering things like “Shh, baby, it’s gonna be okay. I’m here, it wasn’t real, you have nothing to be sorry for.”
You hug him tightly. “I love you. I really don’t deserve you,” you add with a laugh.
He kisses the top of your head. “I love you, too. And you deserve to be loved.”
You eventually fall asleep, George’s fingers in your hair, his heartbeat sounding in your ear. Safe, sound, and loved.

Yuri Katsuki does a better, more nuanced job of the "clumsy girl" trope than any female character I've ever seen
I will start this off by saying that I DO NOT think the 2016 anime about figure skating "Yuri!!! On Ice" is in any way "good cinema". It's 90% fanservice, fetishization of mlm relationships, and one 16 year old antagonist/ comic relief character being way over-sexualized (Plisetsky, where are your parents?)*.
It has some problems to say the least and I'm certainly not here to hype it up as an example of good writing or an example of good representation.
HOWEVER, Yuri Katsuki's character (the main character of the show) does an interesting thing by very closely conforming to what I would describe as the stereotype of the "clumsy girl".
My childhood and teen years were FULL of "makeover stories". Of narratives in which a nerdy, clumsy, bookish girl gets a makeover by the popular kids, gets contacts instead of glasses, and suddenly becomes a member of this societal elite, escaping former bullying. From the music video for "Last Friday Night" by Katy Perry, to (the classic) Mean Girls, to the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer, to the Heather's Musical (although Heather's pokes a bit of fun at this trope and how popularity might not work out for you), narratives about a dorky girl who suddenly gets swept up by somebody popular and "taught" how to "be" popular permeated my youth.
Besides just giving my entire generation the incorrect impression that glasses had to be taken off in order of the makeover to be complete, these stories had the strange reverse effect of appealing to girls who felt like they were the "before" of the makeover. If Bella Swan, self described as "too clumsy to play badminton without sustaining an injury" and "too awkward to have friends" could be swept off her feet by the hottest vampire in town because he saw something in her, then there was hope for the rest of us. This sort of idea of "potential" untapped permeates the genre, because the clumsy girl was always pretty, she just needed to take off her glasses, put on some makeup, and gain some self-confidence.
The concept of "untapped potential" is also quite prevalent in the world of sports anime. Again, this makes sense, since a story about a winning athlete just continuing to win would be boring, so naturally works within this genre often start with the athlete at their lowest, and then follow them on their journey to a comeback or newfound fame. The mentor character who gives the athlete life-changing advice is also a staple, and it's easy to see how that mentor character might be similar to Regina George holding the makeup brush in "Mean Girls".
However, the creators of "Yuri on Ice" seemed to want their (questionably fetishizing) romance to over conform to the genre standards so they drop-kicked the mentor character archetype out the window and had Yuri's dreamy coach do much more makeover-ing than athlete-training. Some of this rests at the intersection of the fact that the sport of choice in the series is figure-skating, where your image matters quite a lot, and Viktor being implied to be in love with our fair protagonist Yuri**, but neither of these aspects fully explain how well the writers made this sports anime series fit into the "makeover" genre instead of the "sports anime" genre.
But back to Yuri Katsuki himself. In the first episode, we see him crying in a bathroom. We learn that he has serious issues with self-confidence in his sport and his personal life, and that this materializes in insecurity about his weight. Episode one Yuri fits nearly every aspect of the "clumsy girl" trope: he's socially awkward, quiet, and... well, clumsy. He narrates a lot of the first episode with his own voice, saying he's "a dime a dozen skater" and "totally awkward", a kind of self-narration reminiscent of Bella Swan. While the other characters are dressed in modern clothes, Yuri's in an oversized, comfortable sweater, and has a generally very outdated wardrobe. He doesn't seem to care about how the world perceives him, (or more likely won't make an effort because he's afraid of rejection). Were he a female character, this is what I would call the "not like other girls" trope. We immediately elevate him to a pedestal as the viewers because he's relatable, and in comparison, the other characters seem to be trying too hard. While this is not as prevalent in male characters from the time (because the other male characters surrounding them are rarely well dressed except for maybe one jock the viewers are supposed to hate), it's hard to find a piece of media between 2014 and 2016 with a female lead without this opposition of "main character can't dress but all other female characters are well dressed, clearly they're try-hards." (Ironic, because that main character is about to be well dressed after their makeover, but I digress).
(Yes, this is an issue that's been in media for a long time and will be for a long time still, and yes there are plenty of good examples of stories where the male main character is just "not like other boys" and has to compete in a world where the other boys are all well dressed, but cases of writers doing this to their female characters SKYROCKETED in the few years while I was a younger teen and it was slightly ridiculous).
Anyways, Yuri is insecure and undressed. But he has a heart of gold! Who can help?
Enter mentor character Viktor (who is.... very naked for some reason. Mitsurou Kubo, was that really necessary to subject my eyeballs to?). Viktor is the epitome of high class. He's good-looking, rich, and successful at his sport, and we're told that Yuri has personally idolized him for a long time. While not exactly a Regina George, he does present his offer to help Yuri in a way that implies that Yuri would be a fool not to accept his help; he's the best of the best and he knows it, he's used to hearing it.
Over the next few episodes Yuri is basically forced into a position acting outside his comfort zone preforming a figure skating routine called "Eros". There's a weird but somewhat comedic moment where a frazzled Yuri, hard-pressed to explain what the concept of eros means to him, says that eros means his favourite food, pork katsudon. While comedic, it is to me the very epitome of "clumsy girl": while other female characters might be alluring in their experience, the clumsy girl is appealing to the love interest and appealing to the male gaze because she doesn't "get it", she's not tangled up in the politics of sex like many female characters are written to be, she's different. (I could talk for hours about how problematic this aspect of the "clumsy girl" trope is, the implication that childishness/ lack of experience is attractive is so gross, but I will spare you).
As a whole, this fanservicy nonsense is fairly par for the course, but it's two aspects of the journey to completing the "Eros" program that interests me. We see him eventually go to his friend, who is a dance teacher, and ask her for help on how to move more femininely. This in part is a nod towards his future realization of his sexuality (or not, depending on whether you watched it before or after they retconed his and Viktor's relationship). But as his dance teacher friend shows him how to move with confidence, he fulfills one of the first steps of getting the clumsy girl makeover: somebody shows him how to move in a "sexy" way, and he is miraculously no longer clumsy. The other thing about this figure skating program is his literal makeover: as Regina George had given to Katy before them, Viktor gives Yuri one of his old outfits, which symbolizes the high-class and success that he's supposedly preparing Yuri for. Yuri switches his glasses for contacts (an iconic aspect of the trope), slicks back his hair, and is suddenly more confident.
As the show progresses Yuri gains more confidence, symbolized not just by his body language but also by his clothing and presentation. He meets a fan of his and has a character changing moment when he realizes that he has a fan who idolizes him like he once idolized Viktor. This realization of new societal power is often a turning point for the clumsy girl finally feeling like she has self-worth, and indeed, Yuri immediately ties a new sense of self-worth to the knowledge that he has fans.
After quite a lot of figure skating animation, fanservice, and a weird subplot about a poodle, Yuri finds a sense of self-worth in the life he's building for himself as a member of "high society" and leader in his sport, no longer relying on outside validation. This, I think is the part that differs from other clumsy girl stories.
Why is this interesting? I think because I'm so very used to seeing female characters get shallow character development in the form of taking their glasses off, letting their hair down, and suddenly being hot, and male characters getting character development in the form of working out in a montage to the eye of the tiger and then getting hot. Despite Yuri basically only doing what female characters often do to become "popular" and no longer nerdy, his character development feels genuine, fuller, and less shallow. For him, his new look genuinely ties to internal character development, whereas in media with women it's usually all about the looks, and the assumption that a changed style must equal a changed character.
Bella Swan from Twilight, Katy from Mean Girls, and Veronica from Heathers all experienced a makeover and new look and implied character development because of a rise in social status (whether they asked for it or not), but ultimately all of them realized the popularity was not what was important to them and they went back to how they "looked" before to symbolize their identity and values shifting back to what they were at the beginning. Yuri ends the series in the fanciest suit we've seen him in yet, dancing with Viktor and excited about the prospects his new high-society life will present him with. His transformation into being self-confident is genuine, and his changing appearance was just a reflection of that internal transformation. Ultimately, I think this plotline is what the original genre of "clumsy girl gets makeover was aiming for", because it is what's most appealing to the viewer: genuine growth and happiness. But all the female "clumsy girl" stories I've seen fell flat of that in one way or another, leading me to very much dislike the trope until "Yuri on Ice" quite accidentally did a good job of it.
* to anyone who's seen this show: yes, I do know what is implied to have happened to Yurio's parents. I'm just a) quoting that vine where the kid goes "wouldn't you like to know, weatherboy" and the reporter goes "where are your parents?" and b) I'm mad that this over-sexualization of Yurio (even within the plot of the series) is something that happens relentlessly to young female characters who've "carved out a place for themselves in an adult world" and also apparently happens to effeminate (implied to be queer) male characters who have done the same thing, and that's not cool either.
**For the sake of my sanity I'll say implied, because though they kiss onscreen, there is apparently much room for debate. The original Japanese cut had them exchange engagement rings near the end of the series, but then both the Japnese version and the English dubbed version ended up having them show off their rings and say "look at our friendship rings". (Ah yes, because I love wearing a matching gold band on my left ring finger with my buddy to show the world what good homies we are (/sarcasm.))
As an interesting aside, in an Uno reverse card moment, the "clumsy girl" trope was made for the male gaze (proof: any trope that talks that much about women putting on less clothing and suddenly becoming hot is 1000% for the male gaze), and was accidentally latched onto by teenage girls. Yuri on Ice was made for the teenage girl gaze (proof: the fetishization of queer men, the pre-existing "boy love" genre that's so popular it has a name), and accidentally fell into the trope of the "clumsy girl".

Jon Lord, Deep Purple
Original article by Lee Marlow which was first printed in the Leicester Mercury in July, 2000.
-
You join us in the hallway of Jon Lord's sprawling Henley-on-Thames home.
Him, Leicester born, millionaire keyboard maestro with rock legends Deep Purple and Whitesnake; me, Leicester-born over-eager hack with a headful of daft questions he's answered a thousand times before.
Holding out a hand, Mr Lord, the David Niven of rock 'n' roll, greets me like a long-lost friend.
Grey stubble frames his face and a head full of slate grey hair is tied neatly in a pony tail.
"Good to see you... find it all right?... blah... terrible weather again isn't it... blah... Yes, it is nice round here isn't it... George Harrison lives just down the road... blah... we're touring in August... blah... on the road in South America..."
He hardly stops to draw breath as we settle in the cream lounge.
I can't help but notice the luxurious off-white carpet is so plush that I can trace my footsteps from the oak door to the immense sofa and, in the corner, a small cinema screen masquerades as a TV.
Life has been kind to Jon Lord.
He's sold millions of records and, erm, "rocked" the biggest audiences the world over – from the 200,000 fans at the California Jam in the mid-1970s to last year's hybrid Royal Albert Hall gig featuring Deep Purple and the London Symphony Orchestra.
Purple, his mainstay band of the past four decades, are about to hit the road again.
Lord admits that after all this time it's hard to resist.
"I don't need to do this anymore," he says, "but it is immense fun.
''I do see a time when we'll have to call it a day, of course, but when? I know I can't do it when I'm 90, but..."
It's all a long way from life at 120 Averill Road, where Mr Lord senior packed socks by day and played sax by night and where the young Lord enjoyed "a perfect childhood," roaming through the nearby countryside with his grubby-faced pals.
An after-school diet of piano lessons, homework and bike riding, however, left a teenage Lord facing an extra year at Wyggeston School.
"I just wanted to play with my friends," he says. "But it was always homework and piano lessons. Something had to give – and it was usually homework."
After being sacked from his first two jobs in Leicester, Lord left for London to study acting and played roll-out-the-barrel-style standards in smoky pubs to pay his rent.
Despite his best intentions, Lord's hopes of becoming an actor were overtaken by his desire to play rock 'n' roll and by the mid-60s, he'd been roped in to play keyboards on The Kinks' You Really Got Me.
"All I did was plink, plink, plink," he laughs. "It wasn't hard."
But from there, Lord and his trusty Hammond organ didn't look back.
He had a top 10 hit with Let's Go To San Francisco with The Flowerpot Men and was pocketing the princely sum of £60 a week.
Lord's future was bright. In fact, his future was Purple.
The group formed in 1968 and had a smash hit in the US with Hush at the end of the year. Three decades later, Kula Shaker took the same song to No 1 in the UK charts. ("Good version as well," says Jon, "if a bit too fast.'')
Purple opened for Eric Clapton's Cream in the States, but after five storming gigs they were taken off the tour as the energised Purple boys blew Slowhand's shambolic drug-addled trio off stage.
"We got on well with them. They had no idea we were to be taken off the tour – they were too stoned!" recalls Jon.
Back home, Purple instigated the first of many line-up changes, welcoming new singer Ian Gillan and bass player Roger Glover – a switch which heralded a new era for Purple and, with it, British rock.
"We knew we had something. It was just so exciting. We used to practice every afternoon and then gig every night."
Gillan brought more than great vocals to the band – his jet-black long hair and charisma attracted the ladies as well.
"There were plenty of groupies at that stage," smiles Lord.
And?
"Well, let's just say if you give a young lad a bit of money and untroubled access to nubile young women – it's not a bad life is it?"
Even at the wrong side of 50, Gillan, it appears, still has a certain charm with the opposite sex. Lord and Gillan were recently interviewed by former Watchdog beauty Alice Beer for the BBC1 religious show H&E.
"I might as well not have been there," smiles Lord. "She was completely taken by Gillan. And after the show they left together and went for a drink. No, I don't know what happened!"
The first five years of the 1970s saw Deep Purple trapped in a perpetual album-tour-album loop. The shows were sold out and the albums – In Rock, Fireball, Machine Head, Made In Japan, Who Do We Think We Are? – all went platinum.
They made a wodge of money, concedes Jon, but their managers made more.
Yet despite the excess (they also had their own plane, naturally), Lord steered clear of drugs.
"I can say hand-on-heart we were never really a drug band. My Dad bought me my first pint and I was still very much a lad from Leicester, you know.
"I experimented with drugs, of course I did. I smoked grass, but it left me sitting in a corner, introspective and giggling to myself.
"I had a brief flirtation with cocaine in the late 1970s but, to be honest, I don't really like being out of control."
The drugs came later. American Tommy Bolin, drafted in to replace the increasingly moody and erratic guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, succumbed to a long-term heroin habit in 1976 and Lord still recalls the time a cocaine dealer chased bassist Glenn Hughes on to the band's private plane, demanding $3,000.
By 1976, the writing was on the wall for Purple and its elaborate brand of rock music. Punk was the new king.
Lord retreated to the States for two years. But former Purple leader David Coverdale was looking for someone to become the new ivory tinkler in his new outfit, Whitesnake, and Lord fitted the bill.
"He wouldn't take no for an answer. I harboured no ambition to be Whitesnake's keyboard player, but he was very, very insistent."
Persuasive Coverdale might have been, but financially generous he certainly wasn't.
"I was in Whitesnake from 1978 to 1983 and he paid me abysmally! I complained regularly and he'd say 'Ok, leave it with me', but it never changed.
"It was a good laugh – that was the main reason I stayed in the band. It was ironic that in the middle of this punk revolution we were playing white R&B and selling out tours."
Strangely, considering the times, Whitesnake's brand of sexist crab-paced rock was a hit.
They were the biggest-grossing tour band in Europe by 1981. But Coverdale – secretly nicknamed Elsie by the band because of his louche on-stage antics and some of his cheesy lyrics – wanted success in America. At all costs.
"It was all style over substance towards the end," sighs Lord. "The band lost its heart. It was just about posing."
The music might have lost its soul, but Whitesnake – complete with a new band of poodle-permed hired hands in black spandex and glitter jackets – went on to sell 17 million albums in 1987.
Lord, meanwhile, had answered the call to reform Deep Purple.
"The critics said Purple getting back together was about money. It was never about money," says Lord. "It was exciting for us and the fans when we got back together."
And that's where he's been ever since. In truth, the reformed band never quite graced the same artistic heights they reached in their heyday, but on the concert circuit they're still capable of selling out a Wembley Arena or NEC.
"I don't enjoy touring in the way I used to, but those two hours on stage make up for it.
''The day I can't open that door and look forward to it is the day I say, 'Thank you very much and goodnight'."
And that's about it. Interview over. I've got more daft questions but, crikey, I've been here for more than three hours and he needs to finish a musical extravaganza he's writing for the local church. Phew, rock 'n'roll.
"Take care driving back," he says, "and give my love to Leicester."
#brb im crying#that jon composed and performed songs for his local church has always been my fav#those church grannies must have been jamming like crazy#jon lord#deep purple

Chapter Seven: Devil or Angel
The Monday following homecoming, Lily walked into chemistry class and sat down in her usual spot. She had prayed and prayed Reggie would be absent from class that day. She couldn’t yet face him. When she finally did see him, her breath caught in her throat. He was beat up, bad. His face was covered in black and blue, his bottom lip split. He walked right past her and took a seat in the back of the classroom. Luckily his usual lab partner had returned, as did hers. She wondered what could have happened to him. She knew it wasn’t from the football game, he had looked fine at the dance. Then her mind flashed to the look on Sweet Pea’s face when she told him what had happened at the dance. She glanced back at Reggie once more with wide eyes.
**
Lily was in the middle of eating her lunch when another lunch tray was slammed down on the table in front of her.
“Hi, Trish.”
“Where on earth did you run off to during the dance Saturday? I tried phoning you when I got home but when your mother answered the phone I hung up. I know how much she hates me, I swear I can see it in her eyes.”
Lily sighed, it was the first time she had seen Trish since the homecoming dance and she was of course locked and loaded with a round of questions. She quickly filled her in about what had happened with Reggie at the dance.
“You slapped Reggie!?”
“I’ll admit it was a knee-jerk reaction, but-“
“I only wish I had done it myself. I swear if Archie knew anything about this…wait...where were you the rest of the night?”
Lily began fiddling with her food, her eyes fixated on her tray. “Well, that’s where it gets interesting. I went outside to clear my mind…and Sweet Pea was waiting in the parking lot.”
Trish’s eyebrows arched. “Sweet Pea?!” She said a little too loudly. Lily’s eyes widened and pressed a finger to her friend’s lips. Trish relaxed a bit and lowered her voice, leaning in closer to Lily. “Sweet Pea? What was he doing there?”
“He was waiting for me.”
Her brows knitted together in confusion. “How did he even know you would be there? I thought it was over between you two?”
“It’s sort of a long story, I promise I’ll fill you in soon.”
“You’d better! Here I was, planning nearly one hundred different ways of ridding him of his manhood for breaking your heart. Little did I know, you’ve been off galavanting together the whole time? Lily, you have got to tell me these things! Sorry, I’m talking too much. Please continue.” She dug into her lunch as she listened.
“He drove us to Sweetwater forest and we slow danced beneath the stars, Trish it was so romantic! And then…“
Trish stopped chewing on her sandwich, she was practically on the edge of her seat waiting in anticipation. “And then…?”
Lily lowered her voice. “He asked me to go steady.” Lily couldn’t hide her bright smile thinking about that night.
“You and Sweet Pea? Lil’! I’m so happy for you!” She reached across the table and shook Lily’s hand in excitement.
“I know, it’s sort of left me dizzy. It all happened so quickly. We were dancing one second and kissing the next and then…well…” Lily’s cheeks started to get hot, not knowing how to tell Trish.
Trish’s mouth dropped to the floor. “You did not…you and SP-”
“No! No, we didn’t do that. I mean, we did other things…”
“Lilian Greene, you little trollop! Tell me more, and for the love of god use descriptive language!”
Before Lily could say anything further, the school bell rang signaling the end of lunch.
Trish groaned in annoyance. “You’ve been saved by the bell this time, but next time you won’t be so lucky. Gosh, I don’t know how I’m going to make it through the day without knowing. The anticipation alone is going to slay me!”
Lily rolled her eyes and rose from the table. “Come on, we’re going to be late.”
**
Later that week, Lily was walking to the library from her dance class. She usually went to the library on the edge of Southside since it was closer to the studio. She had just reached the front of the small brick building when she heard the rumbling of motorcycles. She turned to watch a group of Serpents pulled into the gas station across the street, Sweet Pea included. He took off his helmet and shook out his sable hair, he smiled when he saw her standing across the street. She wore a lavender poodle skirt with a white sweater and her saddle shoes. She had a small dance bag hanging from one shoulder. Sweet Pea dismounted his bike and crossed over to her, a pleasant smile on his face.
“You’re a long way from Kansas, Dorothy.”
“I was just on my way to the library, I need to return some books.”
“I see.”
He leaned down to kiss her gently on the lips, his arms loosely wrapped around her waist. She pulled back and absentmindedly toyed with the silver dog tags that hung around his neck, a more serious look washed over her features.
“Can I ask you something?”
“Sure.” He said with a shrug. He reached out to finger the light purple ribbon that was neatly fastened around her ponytail.
“You wouldn’t happen to know anything about what happened to Reggie after the dance, would you?”
Sweet Pea pretended to search his memory, tilting his head side to side. “Nope. Can’t say I do.”
She knew he was lying, she crossed her arms across her chest.
“…Sweet Pea.”
“What? The guys been cruisin’ for a bruisin’. He’s lucky all I did was rough him up a bit.”
Lily’s eyes widened. “Rough him up a bit? He’s covered in black and blues…”
“Good.” He shrugged. “Nobody messes with you, not if I have any say.”
Lily shook her head at him, disapprovingly. “You’re bad news, SP.”
“Maybe you’re just too good.” He said with a smirk, her smile faltered.
“I should probably get going, it’s getting dark.”
“You wanna hang later?”
“I don’t see why not.”
“Cool. I’ll be over to get you in a couple hours. Hurry home, never know when a big scary Serpent might show up.” He winked and pressed a light kiss to her lips before jogging back over to his friends.
**
Lily and her parents sat down at the table for supper, Mrs. Greene had made her famous meatloaf right on time for her husband’s return from work. They held hands and said grace before filling up their plates.
“Did you hear about that poor Mantle boy? Got himself a beating in Pop’s parking lot Saturday night.”
Lily’s eyes shot up at her father’s mention of Reggie.
“Mantle…Lily, wasn’t that the boy you went to the homecoming dance with?”
Lily nodded her head. “Yes, Reggie.”
“He seems like a very nice boy, comes from a good family too. That’s really too bad. I think it would make a good impression if you went over to check on him sometime, Lilian.”
“Yeah, maybe.” When hell freezes over, she told herself.
“I’ll bet you it was one of those Southside boys again.” Lily’s gaze lowered to her food, she pushed the meat around on her plate with her fork. “Just when you think those hellions couldn’t get any worse.”
If only her father knew she had been spending her nights in the arms of one of those so-called “hellions”. And that in fact it was the boys on the Northside that she needed to watch out for. She could only imagine the look on George Greene’s face if he found out his perfect little girl had been sneaking around with a big bad Serpent.
“They can’t all be bad, daddy.”
Both of her parents paused their movements and cast an eye at her with raised brows.
“I wish I could agree with you, sweetheart. But these are very bad, very dangerous people.
“I just mean that maybe they have their reasons.”
“And what reasons would they have for beating up an innocent boy?”
Innocent boy? What a joke.
Lily chewed on her bottom lip, she wanted to tell them the truth about Reggie to prove her point. Her father looked at her expectantly. An uncomfortable silence was held amongst the three of them until her mother spoke up.
“We really shouldn’t have brought up such serious talk at the dinner table. Darling, how was work today?”
Mr. Greene’s gaze lingered on his daughter a second longer before he ran through his day with his wife. If there was one thing Lily let out a breath and continued eating her dinner mostly in silence, only responding when directly spoken to. She wished more than anything that she could tell them what had happened.
After dinner, Lily helped her mother clear the table before she went to sit in the living room with her father. Sometimes they would sit in silence as they both read, other times he would have her read scripture, sometimes they would talk. Tonight was a quiet reading night.
“Hey Lily-pad?”
She looked up from her book. “Yes, daddy?”
“When I tell you to stay away from the Southside, its because I wouldn’t want anything to happen to you. I know you’re a smart good girl, but even good people can find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
“I understand, daddy. I don’t know why I said that stuff at dinner, it was silly.”
“It’s not silly, you see the good in people.”
“I like to believe everyone has a bit of good in them.”
Mr. Greene gave his daughter a polite smile before returning to his book. “One day you’ll understand.”
Lily toyed with her necklace. She was both physically and mentally biting her tongue. She closed her book, slipping the bookmark inside before rising from the loveseat.
“Maybe one day you will understand too. I’m off to bed, goodnight daddy.” She kissed him on the cheek before marching up the stairs leaving her father at a loss for words.
**
As the weeks progressed, Lily and Sweet Pea had grown closer than ever. Had you told either of them only months ago that they’d be as close as they were, they’d both have laughed. He was addicted to her presence and the way she made him feel, and vice versa. Their outings were strategically planned around Lily’s parents, not wanting to know what would happen if they found out. Often Lily would wait until after her parents would kiss her goodnight before sneaking out of the window to meet Sweet Pea at the end of the street. They would go to the Wyrm to dance and hang out with Trish and Fangs, but after awhile they would sneak off someplace they could be alone. Sometimes they would just go somewhere to talk, the air filled with laughter and stories. Other nights the air would remain silent except for the sound of their quickened heartbeats. Sweet Pea’s hands had a tendency to “accidentally” wander, not that Lily minded.
The two lovers were sprawled out side by side on an old blanket laid on the grass. One of the good things about living in a small town was the night sky, bountiful with stars. Sweet Pea put his arm behind his head, looking up at the sky. Lily turned her head to look at him, taking in his striking features illuminated by the moonlight.
“Sweet Pea, how come you never mention your parents?”
“Not really worth mentioning.”
“You know, you don’t always have to be so mysterious.”
Sweet Pea glanced at her and sighed. “My dad left when I was a baby. My mom’s off somewhere down south with her scumbag boyfriend. My grandma took care of me most of my life. She got real sick a couple years back, couldn’t work anymore. So I started doing odd jobs after school, that’s when I met FP.”
“I remember you telling me, you were only 15?”
“Yeah, I started helping him out for extra money to put food on the table. My grandma never asked where the money came from, but I think she had her suspicions. When she passed away I dropped out of school and officially joined the Serpents. I guess they’re the closest thing I have to a family now.”
She studied him silently, taking in what he shared with her. Her heart broke for him, she couldn’t begin to imagine what it must have been like having to take on the responsibilities of an adult at such a young age. Most kids wouldn’t know what to do, but with Sweet Pea there was no question about it. He knew he needed to take care of him and his grandma, no matter the risk. Lily admired him for that.
“That was incredibly brave of you to do that at such a young age. It sounds like you really loved her.”
“She had a real tough shell, but deep down she was the sweetest woman with the biggest heart. She’d do anything for anyone.”
“Reminds me of someone I know.” Lily intertwined her fingers with his and pressing a gentle kiss to his fingers. Sweet Pea let a small laugh escape his lips.
“I just wish she was still here. Though I guess it’s probably best she didn’t have to watch me turn into some punk kid.”
Lily shook her head. “I bet she would be proud of you.”
He scoffed. “Thanks, but I don’t know if she’d be proud her grandson ended up being a high school dropout turned Serpent.”
Lily sat up, resting on her elbow and looked down at him, his features had hardened.
“Maybe not…But I’m positive she would be proud of what a strong, loyal, sweet young man you are.” She traced the lines of the tattoo on his neck. “You’re a special guy, Sweet Pea. You don’t give yourself enough credit.”
Sweet Pea’s warm cocoa eyes met hers. No one had ever told him anything quite like that. He gazed at her in complete wonder, she looked like an angel with the moonlight shine around her hair like a halo. He reached his hand up to cup her cheek, his thumb running over her smooth skin.
“I don’t deserve you.” Lily turned her head to kiss the palm of his hand then leaned over and kissed him on the lips. Sweet Pea drew her over him so she lay straddling his waist, his hands rested on her hips. Her fingers quickly became lost in his hair, her hips lightly ground into his as he deepened the kiss. He whispered against her lips. “God, you drive me crazy.” One of his hands drifted down to her bottom, giving it a light squeeze while pulling her hips into his.
Sweet Pea rolled them over on the blanket so his body was atop hers, his muscular arms enclosed her petite figure. His hands traveled up her sides until they came to cup her breasts, Lily sighed into their kiss. She let out a little whine when Sweet Pea pulled back from the kiss, leaving Lily out of breath. “Why did you stop?” His lips traveled down her neck
Sweet Pea kissed her on the lips and smirked. “Trust me.”
Lily nodded, her emerald eyes sparkled with curiosity as she watched his lips follow down her collar bone. He placed kisses across the top of her breasts, still clothed by the thin fabric of her dress. He pulled down the straps of her dress to expose a rosy pink lace bra. He lowered his head, sucking each peak through the fabric. Lily gasped at the sensation, she watched him with anticipation as he continued kissing his way down her stomach. Her lips parted slightly. She could feel his large, rough hands move up her thighs. He lifted her bottom from ground, just enough so he could pull her panties off and toss them to the side. He gently lifted her leg by the ankle and trailed soft kisses on the inside of it, working his way up her leg at a taunting pace.
“Sweet Pea, what are you doing?” Lily asked with a sigh, enjoying the feeling of his soft lips trail over her body but unsure of where it would lead. “We’re outside, what if someone sees?”
“Fuck it, let em’ see.”
Lily laughed. “You’re crazy.”
“You make me crazy.” Sweet Pea’s eyes locked on hers. “Relax for me, baby. Trust me.” He smiled at her reassuringly, she gave him a bashful grin and took a deep breath. Sweet Pea continued to trail kisses past her knee and kissed her inner thigh. His lips worked their way up to the crook of her thigh sucking on the skin, letting his teeth nip at the skin, leaving a red mark. “Sweets.” She half moaned, half scolded.
He kissed his way to her center. Lily looked down at him with eager, lustful eyes. “Relax, Lily.” He lowered his mouth to her center, and let his tongue slowly run over her. “Oh god!” Her hands flew down to grasp his hair. He continued to softly caress her with his tongue, leaving her a whimpering mess. He had pleasured her with only his hands until then, and this was something entirely different. Lily’s hips bucked up involuntarily against his mouth. Sweet Pea paused to look at her. Her head was tilted back in ecstasy, her eyes tightly shut and lips parted. “Does it feel good?” Lily nodded her head, seemingly unable to speak.
“Tell me.”
Her words sounded shaky. “Yes. Please don’t stop.”
Sweet Pea smirked and lowered his head back to the task at hand. Sweet Pea kissed her open mouthed running his tongue from the bottom of her slit up to the top. He entered two of his fingers inside of her, letting them curl inside of her. Lily moaned and trapped her bottom lip between her teeth, trying to stay quiet. She felt warmness between her thighs begin to spread over her body. Her nerves felt as though they were on fire. Lily whispered to the dark haired serpent. “Pea.”
His tongue skillfully worked her clit as his fingers glided in and out of her soaking core, curling his fingers inside again and rubbing the pads of his fingers against her sweet spot. He felt her tighten around his fingers, watching as she arched her back in pleasure her dainty fingers twisting into the fabric of the blanket. Lily felt a warmness spread throughout her body, her breathing hitched, she was getting close. Sweet Pea could tell she was holding back, so he gave her some encouragement.
“Let go, baby girl. Let me hear you.” He whispered to her gruffly before lowering his head once more, flicking his tongue against her until her body began to shake, her moans getting louder and louder until she peaked. He knew he would never forget the way she whimpered out his name as she met her release.
Sweet Pea moved back up so he was lying next to her, watching her chest heave as she came down from her orgasm.
Lily looked over at him, her green eyes hazy. “Sweet Pea?”
“Yeah?”
“Make love to me.”
Sweet Pea examined her face. Their passion filled evenings would often reach a certain point where Sweet Pea took it upon himself to exercise serious restraint. If there was one thing he didn’t want to do, it was to rush her into anything.
“Not tonight, doll.”
“We could make love, right here under the stars. ” Though he could think of worse ideas, something about it just didn’t sit right with him. He pulled his eyes away from her.
“Lily, I said not tonight.”
Lily sat up to look at him. She had swallowed her pride and essentially offered herself to him yet he seemingly couldn’t to get out of the situation fast enough.
He saw the look in her eyes, and his heart sank. Embarrassment. “Shit, baby don’t-“ Sweet Pea tried to reach out to her but she pulled herself away from him, her hands ran over her face.
“It’s not that I don’t want to, but-“
“I made myself entirely vulnerable to you…and you denied me.”
“I didn’t deny you, baby. I just-“
“My parents will be looking for me soon, we should go.”
“Lily…”
She adjusted her clothing and smoothed back her hair before standing up and getting into the car.
Sweet Pea threw his hands up in defeat, shaking his head.
The car ride was mostly silent, Lily looked out the window with her arms folded around herself. When they pulled up to her house, Lily didn’t give him a chance to say anything before slamming the door of the car shut and strutting her way to the front door.
Sweet Pea groaned to himself. “Fucking Northside girls.”
**
When Lily returned home that night, she lay awake in her bed. Her mind was racing. Why had Sweet Pea not wanted her? Had she misread the situation? From the sounds of it, he was far more experienced than her.
What was it that those other girls had that she didn’t? That’s when an idea came to her. Lily quietly snuck the telephone into her bedroom and rang Trish.
“Hey Trish? Are you free tomorrow night? I need your help.”
**
Sweet Pea leaned over and lined up his shot at the pool table, pocketing two balls.
“Fangs, you’re up!” He loudly clapped his hands together. “Fangs?” He called out, but was left without a response. He turned around to see Fangs standing slack jawed facing the entrance of the Wyrm, a few other Serpents were doing the same. Sweet Pea snapped his fingers in front of Fangs’ face.
“Fogarty? Are you paying attention, we’re in the middle of a game. What are you staring at?”
Sweet Pea followed his stare to see what had stolen the attention away from the game. As soon as he turned around, his jaw dropped.
“Holy shit.”
Lily walked through the doors of the Wyrm, Trish followed a few steps behind her. Sweet Pea’s eyes were drawn to to a tight-fitted, fire engine red off-the-shoulder top that left little to the imagination. His gaze followed down to the pair of high waisted black pants that hugged her curves perfectly. She wore a pair of simple red heels to match.
Trish had drilled it into Lily's head that the grand entrance was most important. She swayed her hips, shifting her weight from one leg to the other as she sauntered over to the tall serpent she was in search of. She stood beside him and rested her arms behind her on the edge of the pool table.
“Hey, Pea.” She said, a wicked smile playing on her lips.
“L-Lily?” He couldn’t believe his eyes.
“You’re catching flies, sugar.” She brought her hand up to his chin and closed his mouth, pressing a brief but heated kiss to his lips. She pulled away too soon, leaving him weak for more. “Aren’t you going to buy me a drink?”
Sweet Pea internally groaned as he watched her saunter her way to the bar and leaning against it, strategically pushing her bum out to drive him crazy. And it was going exactly as she had hoped.
Sweet Pea turned to the guys surrounding the pool table, they stood gawking at the petite blonde. Sweet Pea’s jaw clenched and he threw a threatening look their way. “What the hell are you looking at?” They instantly tore their eyes away from Lily, resuming their conversations not wanting to cause any problems with SP.
Fangs threw his hand up in surrender. “I’m with her!” He wrapped his arm around Trish, who wore a satisfied grin. She felt like a proud parent. Since they were little girls, Trish had tested out nearly every beauty and fashion tip from Vogue magazine. Lily had (often against her will) been her own personal guinea pig. So when Lily called her the night before to ask her for help, she couldn’t contain her excitement.
Fangs leaned into Trish, his arm wrapped tightly around her waist. “I was really looking at you the whole time, babe.”
Trish laughed, shaking her head. “I’d have been offended if your jaw hadn’t dropped at the sight of her. This is easily my best work yet.”
Sweet Pea made his way over to where Lily stood at the bar.
“Sorry to distract you from your game, it looked like it was getting pretty intense.”
“Oh, that-that’s no big deal. I’ll catch up with them later on.”
Toni came over to serve them. “SP, who’s your new friend? What happened to little miss Doris Day?”
“Hi, Toni.”
Toni’s eyes bugged out of her head upon recognizing her. “Damn, Northie. You look hot.”
Lily smiled brightly. Sweet Pea’s eyes narrowed at the petite bartender.
“You gonna get us a couple of drinks or stand there and hit on my girl right in front of me?”
Toni laughed. “Cool it, beanstalk. I’ll be back in a sec.”
Sweet Pea turned back to Lily, scanning her from head to toe. Was it possible that he was only dreaming? Her fair hair was worn in big sexy curls that framed her face. She had never worn so much makeup in her life, not even for dance recitals. But she thought Trish did a nice job, giving her a classic smokey eye with an expertly applied cat eye. But it was the rich, crimson lipstick glossing her lips that had Sweet Pea’s mind racing with sinful thoughts. He subconsciously bit into his bottom lip.
“She’s right, you look…great.”
She smiled at him, she couldn’t deny how powerful she felt knowing how much she was affecting him. Smooth talking Sweet Pea was wrapped around her little finger.
“Do you think so? I wasn’t sure about the top, do you think it looks alright?” She adjusted the tight fabric of her red shirt so it revealed a bit more cleavage. Sweet Pea easily fell into her trap, his eyes lingered on her chest. His tongue ran over his bottom lip.
“I think it’s just fine.”
Toni slid over their drinks, Sweet Pea didn’t even break eye contact to look at Toni as he handed her a couple of bills. He watched Lily pluck the cherry from her drink and wrapped her equally as red lips around it, pulling it from the stem and eating it. She took a sip from her drink, looking up at him through her dark lashes.
“Is there something on your mind, Pea?”
Sweet Pea leaned down to whisper in her ear. “Some thoughts are best kept locked up, darlin’.” She tried her best to fight off the blush that emerged on her cheeks, and took another sip of her drink. But it wasn’t before he noticed. She knew her facade was breaking, she needed to recover quick. Trish said the key to seduction was to always have the upper hand, keep them wrapped around your finger.
Once she was positive the color in her cheeks had evened out, she turned to look him in the eye as she swirled the straw from her mixed drink. “Can I ask you a question?”
“You could ask me just about anything right now, sweetness.”
She gave him a flirty smile. “Are you really as good as they say you are?”
He tilted his head at the question. His lips parted, but for once he was at a loss for words.
“At pool, I mean.” Lily simpered at him, satisfied that he fell into her trap.
Sweet Pea cleared his throat, straightening out his shoulders and taking a drink from his beer. “Pool, right. Yeah…Well I’ve beat everyone in this bar at least once or twice.”
Lily shook her head lightly, fluttering her lashes. “Not everyone.”
Sweet Pea let out a low chuckle. “Are you challenging me, blondie?”
Lily shrugged. “So what if I am?” She grabbed her drink and started walking over to an empty pool table, grabbing Sweet Pea’s hand and dragging him along with her. “Show me what you’ve got.”
Sweet Pea groaned and tossed back the rest of his drink before following her girl through the bar.
She didn’t expect to win, at least not at pool. She made a point of leaning over the table just right, giving him a clear view of her breasts. She’d give him subtle touches here and there in passing. If she sipped her drink, she made sure to keep eye contact with him. He knew what she was doing to him, and he hated to admit it was working. He was like putty in her perfectly manicured hands. They were about halfway through the game when Sweet Pea walked up behind her, trapping her between his body and the table. She turned around in his arms. She captured her bottom lip between her teeth as she looked at him. His eyes were big and dark, almost animalistic. He had endured enough torture for one night.
“Maybe we should cut the game short. I could use some fresh air.”
“Afraid I might make a comeback?”
Sweet Pea shook his head and took the pool stick from her, leaning it up against the table along with his own before wrapping his arm around her waist and leading them out of the Wyrm.
**
Lily stood leaning back against the cold brick wall. She tilted her head slightly to look at Sweet Pea as he puffed on a cigarette. He watched her. His eyes scanned over her body. He couldn’t deny the way her new look was affecting him. The fact that he knew it had the same effect on every other guy in the bar bothered him immensely. It took every ounce of strength he had to refrain from tossing her over his shoulder in the middle of the bar and bringing her somewhere only he could see her like that. “
Lily’s eyes shifted to his lips. She reached out to remove the cigarette from between them and replaced it between her own scarlet lips. She gently pulled some smoke from the cigarette as she maintained eye contact with Sweet Pea. He was hypnotized, watching as the smoke escape her pursed lips.
“Don’t do that.” He plucked the cigarette from between her fingers. “Thought you didn’t smoke?”
“I don’t. Trish and I used to steal her father’s cigarettes when we were younger, just to try it.” She shrugged her bare shoulders. Trish occasionally smoked, usually in social settings.
“Interesting.” Sweet Pea nodded. taking one last puff before tossing it to the ground. Wanna go for a ride?”
“I might accept your offer, however I don’t see your car anywhere.” Her eyes scanned the lot.
Sweet Pea shook his head, amusedly and walked over to straddle a shiny black motorcycle.
“No car necessary.”
Lily’s mouth fell open, her bad girl facade instantly shattered. In the time that Lily had known Sweet Pea, she had never been on his bike. She had truthfully been dreading the day that he would ask.
“There is no way I’m getting on that death trap.” She crossed her arms.
Sweet Pea smirked at her, there was the Lily he knew. “Come on, doll. I thought you were feeling rebellious tonight? You’re not afraid are you?”
Lily chewed on her lip. “Of course not.”
**
Within minutes of him cutting the engine to the bike and letting down the kickstand, Sweet Pea had Lily pinned up against a tree. His hands groped and massaged her body through her tight clothing as their tongues tangled and fought for dominance. The two of them sighing into each kiss.
Their lips connected again, Lily pulled his body against hers making Sweet Pea groan. He kissed and sucked on the gentle skin between he neck and shoulder. She let her hand slide down his chest until she reached the cool metal buckle of his belt. Sweet Pea groaned, pushing himself into her touch. She gently tugged on the leather of his belt. “Maybe I’m not as good as everyone thinks…” Sweet Pea pulled her head to his, his lips taking hers possessively. His strong hands ran up her sides to cup her breasts. He groaned against her soft lips, his tongue meeting hers as they fought for dominance. Lily’s hands gripped into the leather of his jacket. She pulled away from his lips.
“I want you.”
Sweet Pea shot her a look, and ran his hand though his hair in frustration. “Lily.”
Lily let out an exasperated sigh, throwing her hands up. “I don’t understand, Sweet Pea. From the sounds of it you’ve been with every girl on Southside but when your girlfriend looks you in the eye and tells you she wants you, you shut her down? How does that make any sense?”
Sweet Pea stood there in silence, looking past her and into the darkness of the forest.
“What is the difference between me and those girls?”
“There’s a big difference.” Sweet Pea took a deep breath. “Lily, it’s not that I don’t think you look sexy as sin right now. Believe me, you have no idea what this outfit is doing to me. But it isn’t you. I mean, what is all of this about?”
Lily reached up to fiddle with her necklace when she realized she had taken it off. Trish had said it would ruin the look. She wrapped her arms around herself protectively. “I thought maybe it would make you want me. Sometimes it feels like you don’t.”
“Don’t want you? Baby, you really have no clue how bad I want you. It keeps me up half the night. Hell, I’ve wanted you since the day I first laid eyes on you.”
“Then why do you keep stopping?”
“Because I-“ He stopped himself, afraid of what might have slipped out. “I think you deserve something more than just some quickie in the back of my car or in the woods. You mean more than that to me. I know it’s your first time, so I want it to be special for you.”
Her eyes softened and Sweet Pea ran his hand over her cheek. “And when the time comes I want you to be you. I want the Lily I fell for.”
Lily gave him a small smile. “Thank you, Pea.”
“I don’t ever want you to feel like you need to change for me or anybody else.” He caressed her cheek, she melted into his touch. “You’re goddamn perfect as you are. If I have to remind you that everyday, I will.”
Even in her heels she had to stand on the tip of her toes to kiss him. He happily wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her tighter to him as they kissed. Lily was the first to pull back. His eyes were warm and loving.
“You know…it’s really too bad.”
“What is?”
“Trish went through all the trouble of getting me dolled up…all to go unappreciated.” She offered Sweet Pea a suggestive look.
“I mean, I guess it would be a shame to put this outfit of yours to complete waste…”
Lily giggled, pulling on his dog tags to lower his head to hers. They both smiled into the kiss. Sweet Pea’s arms snugly encased her waist, pulling her into his strong build. The tempo of kiss quickly changed from steady and sweet to urgent and hungered. The scent and taste of candied cherries flooded Sweet Pea’s senses as he became fully enveloped by her presence. Lily leaned up to his ear, her hand making it’s way back to the top of his jeans. “I want to make you feel as good as you make me feel.”
Sweet Pea swallowed hard.
Her hands tugged on the leather of his belt, her hands nervously fumbled with the buckle until it finally came undone. She cautiously let her hand palm him through his underwear, her eyes widening at the feel of him. Sweet Pea sucked in a breath as her fingers gently glided over his length through the fabric, twitching in answer of her touch.
Lily peered up at him sheepishly. “Pea?”
“Yeah?”
“I-I don’t really know how to…I’ve never…”
Sweet Pea smiled at her sweetly, her innocence never failed to tug at his heart. He pressed a tender kiss to her forehead. He pushed down his underwear, letting himself free. He covered her delicate hand with his own and guided her to him, wrapping her dainty fingers around his shaft. Sweet Pea softly grunted at the feeling of her soft hands covering him.
“Just wrap your fingers around it like that, and move your hand up and down.”
Lily watched between them, their hands gliding up and down his length. It wasn’t as though she had a lot of references to compare him to, but she was still taken aback at his size.
Sweet Pea’s voice became breathier. “You can grip it tighter.” He closed his fist around her hand more, tightening her grasp on him. “Yeah, like that. That feels amazing.” Sweet Pea eventually let go of her hand, letting her take over fully. He let his fingers trail down her neck and along her collarbone, down to the exposed skin of her shoulder.
Lily got curious and ran her thumb over the velvety tip, Sweet Pea let out a moan. “Fuck.”
Lily stopped moving. “I’m sorry, did I hurt you?!”
He shook his head. “No, it just felt really good. You’re doing great.”
She continued to pleasure him with her hand, enjoying the sounds of his soft moans.
His hand made its way down to the neckline of her red top, he fingered the thin fabric for a moment before pulling down the fabric to expose her lace clad breasts. He let his hands gently caress the skin, encouraging soft sighs from Lily. He lowered his head down to kiss her neck, gently sucking and biting her skin. Sweet Pea groaned when she pushed her body into his even closer, the soft swell of her breasts pressed against his hard chest. His heartbeat was racing.
“A little faster.” He pleaded.
She proceeded to stroke his member with more confidence. Sweet Pea’s breathing was short and shaky as he neared his climax. Lily tightened her grip around him, causing him to grunt into the crook of her neck. “Lily…” His fingers dug into her hips, pushing her back against the rough bark of the tree behind her and pressing his body flush against hers. She could feel his muscles twitch as she built up his pleasure. He was teetering on the edge of release when Lily flicked her thumb over the tip once again, setting off his orgasm. He bit down on her neck, grunting in ecstasy as the pleasure shot through his body. His hips jerked into her touch until he finally came down from his high.
Lily’s breath had grown almost as labored as his, she couldn’t believe she had done that. It was the ultimate confidence boost, being able to bring him as much pleasure as he had brought her countless times.
Sweet Pea sighed into her neck before lifting to rest his forehead against hers, his signature curl tickling her skin. Lily gazed up at him. A look of contentment had washed over his features, an expression that was rarely worn by the Serpent. She grinned proudly. “I seduced you.”
He chuckled darkly. “Correction, you damn near killed me. Who knew you had a little bit of poison in you, angel?”
Lily chuckled and pressed a soft kiss to his cheek.
“Seems like I’m full of surprises lately.”
**
Lily kissed Sweet Pea goodbye and ran to the front door of her house, she quietly turned the lock on the door and opened it. She slipped off her heels and made her way over to the stairs.
“Where are you coming from?”
Lily almost jumped out of her skin, bracing herself against the wall. Her mother was waiting at the kitchen table, her hands folded before her.
“I was…I was over Trish’s house, she forgot to tell her parents I was staying over. I didn’t want to cause any trouble so I came home.” Lily fumbled through her excuse then turned to run up the stairs before her mother could ask anything more. “Goodnight, mother.”
“Stop.” Lily halted her movements. “Let me see you.” Lily groaned internally before she walked over to stand before her mother. Mrs. Greene scanned her body with narrow eyes. She lowered her voice so as not to rouse her husband, who would surely have a fit if he saw his daughter like that.
“What in the devil are you wearing?!” Lily crossed her arms to cover her chest and shrugged.
“Trish gave me a makeover. It was just for fun.”
Her mother’s hand brushed over her cheek, her eyes caught at the nape of her neck for a beat. Her eyes widened.
“What’s this?”
Lily narrowed her brow in confusion. “What’s what?” She turned to look in the mirror hung in the hall. Her neck was decorated in hickeys. She made herself a mental note to kill Sweet Pea.
“It was the curling iron. You know how clumsy Trish can be.” She laughed nervously, pushing her blonde curls to cover the marks before turning to face her mother again. She wore a stone cold look, her arms folded around her. “Curling iron.”
She abruptly turned away from Lily and walked to the kitchen, bracing herself against the sink as she looked out the window.
“Go upstairs and wash that stuff off your face before your father sees you. I don’t want to see you dressed like this again. You tell that redheaded hussy to keep far away from you, she’s nothing but trouble.”
“Mom…”
“Goodnight, Lilian.”
Lily nodded her head silently. “Goodnight.”
Mrs. Greene rubbed her temples, trying to keep her composure. She was no fool, she had known something was up. Coming home late, spending an unusual amount of time at the Vargas girl’s house. She knew from an early age that girl was up to no good. Trish was always much too fast for a girl like Lily. A light outside the window caught Mrs. Greene’s eye, the headlights of a black motorcycle pulling away from the house. It wasn’t one of the neighbors, and it certainly didn’t belong to Trish’s parents. She could hardly make out the driver, but she knew that it certainly wasn’t Trish…

Poldark Season 4 ep3
this season is only 8eps long i thought maybe the main plot would be here by now unless ive missed it. it just seems like a whole bunch of unrelated stories, which im not complaining about. or maybe theyre still just setting up?
still enjoying things so far, wish george would just simmer down for 5 minutes and that we could have some juicier plot nuggets but those are small complaints.
So, drake and Rosina making kissy faces. interesting.
VERITY! I MISSED YOU BBY
Oh my god elizabeth is doing that face while she’s drinking again, I love it.
Monk adderly looks like a slytherin prefect who has a dark mark tattoo on his ankle or something.
Aww lil fat Caroline is so sweet
Oh, lady witworth sounds like a dick.
Oh, wow fuck monk adderly. Get out of my face he’s worse than George and that is saying A LOT.
Ross is an awkward pillock. Just say “Mel I missed u baby”
I stan Caroline now and forever.
Listen Ossie and his foot fetish disgust me but rowella is incredible. Like “all right I can’t do anything else ima let this goblin fuck me for some of his gold”
Does Ossie not know how to fucking knock doors or something
“to an outsider” oh damn there it is. And from Zacky of all people. I really didn’t think that zacky would be like this with ross.
Hmm I’m not sure how I feel about this drake Rosina thing but I’m glad Sam is talking like a normal person now. Hes much better when his every other word isn’t god. Hes acting like a human now and I dare say I might even like him.
Good, I’m glad ross and zacky are friends again.
OH, elizabeth is such a good mama and Geoffrey Charles is such a good brother to little val.
Poor wee drake not wanting to wish for morwenna and be selfish. just do it baby
Honestly, again, George would be up shit creek without a paddle nor a boat for that matter without elizabeth.
You know what I’m starting to see the Val/Jeremy/clowance resemblance.
Omg George is so tiny why is he so small he is totally a toy poodle
I love seeing ross with his friends just having fun.
Hey so what’s going on with Dwight and the baby. actually dont answer that.
Ok this party is boring and depressing. Except for GC who is def going to be an alcoholic.
God ross stop mentioning elizabeth you know it gets Demelza hackles up. At least he brings her a lil present for once. poor girl needs more pretty things. just more stuff in general she has like 3 dresses and 1 hair tie
Oh mY GOD NOT ON THE TABLE I BEG YOU.
Just throw the whole kitchen out its tainted.
Well that was pretty good. Will start the second disk (4,5,6) tomorrow but for now I’m satisfied. I still think elizabeth and Demelza do far too much for their stupid husbands although lord knows they need it. Honestly say what you want about sexism in these books and history in general, but we all know that 90% of Cornwall would be fucked over a picket fence if Demelza took the day off. Not to mention how absolutely pounded into the dirt George would be without Elizabeth. These 2 and Caroline are all that’s standing between Cornwall and the apocalypse. They made it clear that Mel was mostly behind Falmouth’s decision to put ross forward but just think about all the other small stuff that goes unnoticed. I understand too that George married elizabeth because he loved her, but you must admit he’d be lost without her in a figurative and literal sense.
I forgot to mention last ep but what was with elizabeth putting her laudanum thing in his drink? To calm him down. And why did he drink it? I’m pretty sure he saw her do it, does he know what it is? More to the point why hasn’t she done it before; he’s an excitable little poodle and he’s going to have a heart attack.
Anyway, I feel like I should go back and rewatch the other eps and do this again because it was fun. I’m still planning on doing a “ George Warleggan isn’t that bad and here’s why” like I did with wesker because it was SO much fun but ill maybe save all that for when iv officially watched all 5 series ( by which I mean watched them with my mom because she doesn’t know I've seen season 5 already lmao, shed kill me if she knew I watched it without her.)

Labradoodle vs Goldendoodle
https://www.centralparkpaws.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Goldendoodle-Medium-sized-cream-colored-F1-Generation.jpg This past weekend I was camping up north with family and friends.
Our campsite happened to be across from a family with two dogs, Fred and George (think Harry Potter). Of course, I had to go over and say, “Hi,” since I can’t help but to want to pet every dog I see.
The two dogs looked like either a Goldendoodle or a Labradoodle.
It turned out that there was one of each!
And, like all dog parents, they were more than happy to talk to me about their dogs.
They had adopted both dogs from the same breeder at the same time. Both dogs were quite young and energetic.
I’ve had limited exposure to the Doodle breeds, so it was quite interesting to learn more about them.
I learned the two breeds are similar in several ways, yet different in others.
Also, I hadn’t realized the importance of choosing a dog from the right generation.
Labradoodle and Goldendoodle Generations
A medium F1 Goldendoodle Photo by Goodlepups (CC BY-SA 4.0)
The dog’s generation is important because it impacts the dog’s traits, especially regarding their dander and shedding.
F1 – The first generation, resulting from breeding a purebred dog with a purebred poodle.
F2 – The result of breeding two F1 dogs
F3 – The result of breeding two F2
If you see a “B” after the number, it means that the dog was bred back to a purebred poodle.
The two most common types are F1B and F2B.
The purpose of breeding the dog back to a poodle is to reduce shedding.
Many Doodle breeds are 75% poodle and only 25% another breed.
History of the Labradoodle and Goldendoodle
Labradoodle
The original purpose of creating a Labradoodle was to come up with a more hypoallergenic service dog[1].
It is believed that the first doodle was a Labradoodle created by Wally Conron in the 1980s.
He was looking for a service dog, for a blind woman whose husband was allergic to dogs.
Goldendoodle
The Goldendoodle emerged in the 1990s on the heels of the Labradoodle’s success[2].
Golden retrievers have been a well-loved breed over the years, but their shedding can be a deterrent to those interested in getting a dog.
When the Goldendoodle started to gain in popularity, their lack of shedding held great appeal to those reluctant to have dog hair in the house.
Physical Differences Between a Labradoodle and a Goldendoodle
Though Labradoodles and Goldendoodles look similar, there are few small differences in their physical appearance.
Most of the differences can be seen in the texture and color of their coats.
Thanks to the poodle, both Labradoodles and Goldendoodles come in three different sizes: small, medium, and large.

Height
These are the average heights to the shoulder.
Goldendoodles are generally taller than Goldens Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers.
Goldendoodles
Small 12-15 inches
Medium 16-19 inches
Large 19-25 inches
Labradoodles[3]
Small 14-16 inches
Medium 17-20 inches
Large 21-24 inches
Weight
Goldendoodles[4]
Small 18-30 pounds
Medium 30-50 pounds
Large 50-70 pounds
Labradoodles
Small 15-30 pounds
Medium 30-45 pounds
Large 50-85 pounds

Coats
Goldendoodles
…have longer softer coats compared to the Labradoodle.
Also, some Goldendoodles have a wavy coat that can be red, apricot, cream, or caramel.
Labradoodles
…have shorter more coarse hair than Goldendoodles.
Also, Labradoodles come in a wider variety of colors. They can be chocolate, black, cream, red, yellow, white, and multi-colored.
Things to Know…
When looking for a Doodle or any designer dog breed, the physical and behavioral characteristics can vary greatly.
How Much Exercise Do They Need?
Can you tell which is the lab and which is the Labradoodle?
Both the Goldendoodle and Labradoodle have similar exercise needs.
Though there are always exceptions and, of course, age and size play a role as well.
The two breeds are both originated from the sporting breed group.
Sporting breeds generally require a fair amount of exercise, like walking, playing ball, and swimming.
The good thing about Goldendoodles and Labradoodles are that they don’t need a ton of exercise, like a five-mile run every day. The smaller versions of these two breeds require a little less exercise and space to play.
I’m a strong believer that, big or small, old or young, exercise is a part of dog parenting.
After you exercise them you need to feed them! Click hear to learn which dog foods are best!
Personality Differences Between a Labradoodle and a Goldendoodle
Both breeds are friendly dogs.
However, the Goldendoodle is more social than the Labradoodle.
Also, Goldendoodles tend to be more exuberant when expressing themselves to others.
Though Labradoodles are definitely amiable dogs, they are more reserved than Goldendoodles.
They tend to prefer the company of their family, over greeting everyone they meet.
Both are intelligent dogs and have been used for service and therapy dogs.
Labradoodles excel as service dogs, whereas Goldendoodles are better suited to work as therapy dogs.
Common Health Issues Found in Labradoodles and Goldendoodles
Doodles can develop health issues common to the original breeds[5].
This means that they’re able to inherit health issues from both sides of their family, creating a longer list of health issues.
Goldendoodles Are More Prone to the Following Diseases:
Hip Dysplasia
Sebaceous Adenitis (skin disease common to Poodles)
Subvalvular aortic stenosis (heart disease common to Golden Retrievers)
Addison’s disease
Eye diseases like retinal atrophy, cataracts, and glaucoma
Labradoodles Are More Prone to the Following Diseases:
Hip and elbow dysplasia[6]
Eye diseases like retinal atrophy and Von Willebrand’s Disease
Sebaceous Adenitis (skin disease common to Poodles)
Average Lifespan
Another similarity between the two breeds is their lifespan.
Both breeds’ average life expectancy is 10-15 years old.
Their age is also impacted by the size of the dog, as smaller dogs usually have a longer lifespan.
Labradoodles and Goldendoodle Hypoallergenic Traits
Both dogs are known to be a good breed for those who are allergic to dogs.
Also, both breeds shed less than most other dogs, which they get from their poodle parents.
However, keep in mind though that no dog is entirely free of dander. Both dog breeds may still cause problems for those who suffer from severe allergies.
It is crucial that if you are looking for a hypoallergenic dog that you find a dog that falls into the F1B category.
Ultimately, the dog will have a higher genetic percentage of poodle than of lab or golden.
How Much Do Goldendoodles and Labradoodles Cost?
From a reliable breeder either breed can cost between $1500-$2500[7].
Less expensive dogs can be found; however, less is not always better here. If you are thinking of buying from a breeder, do your research on them first.
Also, be sure that they include a health certification on the puppy’s parents.
Though there is no guarantee that the dog you choose will be healthy, you will reduce the chance if you buy a dog that comes with proper certification.
Final Thoughts
Consider the ball, uh, I mean, breed, carefully!
Both breeds are amazing dogs that carry similar positive traits.
I don’t feel that there is a better breed between the two dogs.
Through my research, the three most significant differences between the two breeds are their people skills, the texture of their coat, and color.
I think both breeds are absolutely adorable and perfect family dogs. I particularly like the different size choices.
That all being said, it is essential to note that these are mixed breeds and relatively new breeds.
The traits that you get in a doodle are less reliable than purebred dogs that have a long and stable history. The lack of reliability also applies to the dog’s overall appearance.
If you decide on getting a Goldendoodle or Labradoodle, I encourage you again to do your research.
There are both excellent and horrible dog breeders out there, and it’s not always apparent which is which.
Alternatively, if you are seeking a more mature dog to avoid the puppy training, rescue groups are great at matching dogs with forever families.

Day 15- Film: Something to Live For
Release date: Mar 7th, 1952.
Studio: Paramount
Genre: Drama
Director: George Stevens
Producer: George Stevens
Actors: Joan Fontaine, Ray Milland, Teresa Wright, Richard Derr, Douglas Dick
Plot Summary: Alan is a recovering alcoholic who now helps others though AA. One night he is called to the hotel room of struggling actress Jenny Carey. Both find the encounter helpful and begin meeting regularly. Inevitably they fall in love, but Alan is already married with 2 children. How can they stay sober and live apart?
My Rating (out of five stars): **½ for the actual quality of the film, **** for my enjoyment of it (up until the last 10 minutes!)
I was looking forward to this one for awhile now, being very curious to see how Hollywood would tell this kind of a story. The actual film was interesting and engrossing to me... but its genuine quality as a film wasn’t really up to par. (some spoilers)
The good:
The fact that a Hollywood film tried to tackle this subject. It was rare for an addict or a drunk to be a fully fleshed out protagonist. They tended to be either villains or comic relief, so showing a guy in AA trying to help someone else struggling was really commendable.
Ray Milland. He’s just a very appealing actor. Charming and sensitive, he always has a sweetness about him. His most iconic role was in the 1945 film Lost Weekend, where he played a sympathetic drunk struggling to stay sober. Having him now play a character 14 months into sobriety felt very fitting.
Milland’s acting when his character was falling in love. The way his entire body language and tone of voice changed, you actually felt as if you were watching a person experience the giddiness that comes with the first flush of love. His flirting with Fontaine was surprisingly affecting.
Teresa Wright’s PTSD reactions whenever she thinks she hears her husband stumble in the background. It was smart writing to remind us of how much Alan’s alcoholism devastated their lives.
The bad:
Poodle hair! Why did they give Joan Fontaine that horrible poodle cut? She’s supposed to be a young actress, but the hair makes her look like she’s in her 40s. It looks so bad on her that at least a dozen times I was pulled out of the story to swear at the hair and wardrobe department! Teresa Wright, as the actual mature housewife, had shoulder length hair with a soft brush out, and she looked younger than Fontaine.
Some of the overly melodramatic, almost soap opera-y moments. When the story was simpler, it was emotionally effective, but when it bled into melodrama, it lost some of its power.
The ending! I really hated the ending. I knew he wouldn’t leave his now pregnant wife and two children, but the way the film tried to neatly tie everything up felt almost disrespectful to the audience!
