I often see posts on here about your Moral Obligation to Reblog (which I don't really agree with), but I don't ever see the argument that reblogging is fun and nets you followers. I love seeing stuff on my dash. I open Tumblr seventeen times a day in order to See the Posts. I like it when there are more of them. If I get a new follower, or someone reblogs one of my posts, I often go check out their blog, and if I like a high proportion of what's there, I'll follow 'em. It's cool to be a creator in a fandom, but liking stuff and being enthusiastic about stuff is a really important role you can have, too. I've only been on Tumblr since 2019, but even then, posts in my fandom seemed to circulate a lot more, especially older ones, and I miss that. People would just find something from a few years ago and say "HEY REMEMBER THIS? IT WAS SO COOL!" and I would think "I DO REMEMBER THAT AND IT WAS!" or maybe I hadn't seen it because new people join all the time. I don't care if I have seen a post eight times. I don't usually even mind if I see a post eight times today. I recognize your name and I think "oh ThatPerson liked that cool post, too!" If you add tags? Amazing. Fantastic. Instantly quadruples the chance of follow. They don't even have to be witty tags. "This episode was sooooo funny!" or "I love Blorbo in a jean jacket he's just like me fr!" or "OPartist I love the colors you picked!" make this place feel so much friendlier. As far as being fun--a cool thing about Tumblr is that if you reblog a thing, you get the notifs and OP gets the notifs. Yeah yeah yeah, I'm sure the notifs are a pain if you actually go viral, but I don't think that's a thing most of us every worry about. I love to get notes! It's fun to get notes even if I didn't make the post, because I see who else thought that post was funny! Do you know how good it feels to find some neat piece of art with 6 notes and you reblog it and it gets 10 or 30 or 100 more and you get to see that?
Anyway, reblogging is fun and cool. Tumblr even lets you make sideblogs, so if you want to have a dedicated blog to just your art (or whatever), you can make a sideblog for reblogging. Or, hear me out--people will come for your reblogs and then end up liking the things you make, too.
#this is apropos of absolutely nothing#except maybe that i've been thinking about going Deep Tag Diving because i haven't done it in a while#been kinda busy lately but i will#also BIG THANK YOU to people who reblog things onto my dash#i love you and i love the shiny trinkets you have picked out to display for my enjoyment#i need to get over my 'i have reblogged that before' phobia#this is the autistic website we love to See It Again

One rock a day keeps the Wilderness away – L.M
Pairing: lottie matthews x fem!reader
Summary: The last thing you expected to happen after a plane crash was for your girlfriend to end up becoming some kind of cult leader fascinated by amulets made of the weirdest and shiny things like a damn owl, yet here you are.
Word count: 1,7k.
Content: 96/wilderness timeline, cursing, pet names, fluff and corny, comfort, skeptic!reader, lottie and reader are secretly little haters.
Note: I guess you could say that I simply love writing fluff and cuddles.
English is not my first language.
If there was one thing everyone at Wiskayok High School was aware of, it was that Lottie Matthews was rich as fuck.
She always wore the most expensive clothes, there was a driver who picked her up at the door and took her everywhere, her house was simply giant and some dare to say that a butler was the one who met them at the door and served them drinks on the nights she had her parties.
The thing is, Lottie was a bit... weird, for a rich girl, which meant that she wasn't as popular at school as she could’ve been. She didn't exactly fit the bad girl role, but she wasn't quite a preppy either, with her extravagant bows and tiaras being the most luxurious thing she would actively display. She was distant at best.
This made you, at the beginning of your relationship, try to spoil her in every way possible, not being able to believe that this sweet and out of reach person could reciprocate your feelings so genuinely when she could have just anyone, so, in addition to showering her with affection, you also showered her with gifts. Accessories, especially. Earrings, necklaces, bracelets, until you understand that jewelry really wasn't her thing, since despite accepting everything with affection, she simply left them stored insisting that you didn't spend your money on it. Lottie was much more appreciative of the little things you gave and did for her.
Now, the last thing you expected was for her to develop a taste for accessories in the damn wilderness of all places.
“Baby, I’m not wearing a necklace with a damn bone hanging from it to go hunting.”
It turns out that, like almost everything involving Lottie, her way of demonstrating her new preferences – maybe hobbies? – was also not very usual and you hadn't exactly taken anything of the royal jewelry type for a trip that was supposed to be quick.
“But I chose and made it for you! Will keep you safe out there, I feel it.”
Oh, yeah. There was also the fact that your girlfriend was perhaps slowly going a little mad and becoming the leader of a religious cult that your teammates were a part of and that she wanted you to participate too.
“Jesus Christ, Lot.”
You didn't want to encourage her. The worry was eating you alive and it's only gotten worse since she confided in you that she finally ran out of her meds.
You, unlike your other teammates, were aware that the things Lottie said or did lately were much more influenced by her own condition than any other truly supernatural factor – as much as you couldn't deny that the cabin and the forest gave you goosebumps –, which made you really stressed and irritable with all your friends as they started to believe in things that didn't exist and put pressure on your girlfriend for answers as if she were some kind of prophet.
You managed to keep everything under control and keep her from straying too far from reality to a certain point, but then the whole situation with the group being attacked and Van being seriously injured happened and so nothing you did could convince Lottie that there was nothing what she could have done about it and that only seemed to encourage her more when the redhead recovered enough to confide you all that she should have listened to the feeling Lottie had and that she felt safer with the “amulet” she received from her.
The result is that you are now the target of Lottie's worries and she insists that you wear the charms and trinkets she makes.
It's actually quite cute, you've caught her once or twice sitting by the fire trying to figure out how to tie a knot that won't snap the cord, her eyes glazed over and focused. You could use it, as bizarre as it would be, if it was just a silly gift from your girlfriend, but since that's not what it is, you don't want to put even more things in her head in case something actually happens.
“But then what’s going to protect you when you leave?” Lottie asks, head tilted to the side in alarm and you can only notice how her bangs fall over her eyes in a messy and cute way.
“Maybe the gun I always carry with me?”
However, it was becoming difficult not to encourage her in any way, because aside from bones or occasionally some different plants, Lottie also seemed to see signs in anything that stood out a little, like the bright and colorful rocks you had made a habit of bringing at her, guarding everything that caught her attention like a damn owl.
It started as a silly thing, with a cracked and shiny rock you found near the lake the day you guys found the cabin, you cleaned it and handed it to her with a shy smile, like it was one of your gifts back home, just to cheer her up a little and since then she kept the rock with her at all times – even if sometimes she woke up twitching because she ended up lying against it in the middle of the night. That seemed to turn the key and over the next few days you noticed that she spent time looking for new types nearby the house and so you committed to bringing all the pretty items she might like when you went on your hunts with Natalie, from strange rocks to little crystals lost along the way, just because she looked so happy when you handed them to her.
You think her cute gesture turned into more of a paranoia like 'one rock a day keeps the wilderness away', but at least it makes her more relaxed and happy on days when everything is bad.
One day you return to the cabin with Natalie in tow looking very upset because you've come back empty-handed again and your head is drooping with exhaustion and frustration. When you finally enter Lottie is waiting for you with an appreciative, warm look in her face.
“Did you get anything?” she asks, wrapping her arm around you and guiding you both to your usual corner so you can sit side by side.
You mumble negatively and bury your head in her neck. She rephrases the question when she notices your discouragement:
“Did you get anything for me?”
You sigh, smiling at her, “That I did.”
Lottie watches you curiously as you move to take something out of your pocket and show it to her and you notice the exact moment she registers what’s in your hand.
“A quartz.” She takes it from you like it’s the most fragile thing in the world, “It’s a pink quartz.”
“Is it?” You ask, stifling a yawn with your hand, “I don't know a thing about those stones and stuff, just thought it was pretty and you would like it.”
“Well, I do like it very much. Thank you.” Lottie gives you a soft smooch on the cheek, “And it's not a stone, baby, it's more like a gem or a crystal.”
“Hmm,” you hum in agreement.
She leans her entire weight against your body and smiles innocently when you complain: “Misty told me the other day that gems like that mean peace and unconditional love.”
“You've been talking to Misty? About rocks and gems?” You look at her in disbelief.
“I feel really lonely without you here with me, you know?” Lottie shrugged.
You felt a little guilty and moved closer, leaving a kiss on her shoulder.
“I'm sorry, Lot. I miss you when I'm away too,” you murmur, rubbing her arm in comfort, Why don't you tell me about your day?”
Lottie rolls her eyes in a way that reminds you so much of the days when you guys would get together to talk shit about everyone you knew in these stupid parties that your heart skips a beat.
“Ugh, if I hear Mari complain about one more damn thing, I’m going to tell you to stop chasing bears and order everyone to serve her for dinner.”
“Please, don’t.” You snort a dumbfounded laugh, “They might actually do it.”
You end up lying down with her curled up and facing you, gently drawing small circles on your hand.
“Got something in your mind?”, you brush some strands of hair from her face affectionately.
“I just have no idea what to do with… them,” she shrugs hesitantly.
You know what she means immediately and move to take her face in your hands, feeling her lean into your touch.
“Oh, Lottie.”
“I know what you and Nat do for us is very important, but I wish you didn't have to,” she mumbles, as if she were confiding a secret, getting impossibly close to you. “I wish you would stay here, with me, where it is safe. Is it too selfish? Want to keep you all to myself?”
You let out a shaky breath, not trusting your own voice when you can feel her breath against your lips like this.
“Well, if Shauna can hide her diary in the attic like a freak then I guess you're allowed to keep some things to yourself too, hun.” You stutter, feeling your skin heat up in embarrassment.
“But you're not a thing.” Lottie wrinkles her nose.
“You can keep me anyway, I don’t mind.” You shrug this time, faking indifference to make her laugh.
And she does, “Babe!”
Just when everything is silent and you think Lottie has slept with your legs wrapped around hers and using your arm as a pillow, she speaks again:
“You know, my new quartz would make a really cute necklace.”
“Lot,” you yawn against her hair.
“Will you use it if I make one?” She looks at you, blinking her big brown eyes in the most convincing way possible, “Just this one, please, for me?”
You sigh, “Yes, Lottie. I'll use your magic stone.”
She deflates, “Don’t talk about it like it’s crack, babe.”
Lottie kisses you slower than usual before you leave as she finally notices the pink gem hanging from your neck and you happily ignore Natalie's mockery as you run after her to catch up to the forest.

I actually came up with the idea for this guy over two years ago and never found a chance to properly introduce him. But just a few days ago, my bud @twistedtummies2 finished a multi-part story for me as part of an art trade (you can read it here, here, here, and finally here), which serves as an official introduction for this crabby lad. I highly recommend you check it out, not only did TT2 do a phenomenal job, but it perfectly captures this fella's personality and backstory for those interested. Plus there's vore, which is a plus. XD
Meet Taoka! He's a T/wisted W/onderland OC of mine (that one mobile game with the Disney villains re-imagined as pretty anime bois), based on a certain giant coconut crab who sings a song about shiny stuff.
A flamboyant, shameless kleptomaniac obsessed with things that shine and sparkle, he comes from a poor background and had to fend for himself from very early on. He’s incredibly materialistic and loves showing off the treasures he's acquired (mostly pick-pocketed) over the years, but he’s constantly plagued by a deep insecurity that he has no worth beyond the trinkets he stole.
Besides stuff that glitters, Taoka has a passion for singing, guitar playing, and outrageous glam rock style fashion (he is a student of P/omefiore and even they think he looks a bit garish XD). He dreams about being a famous musician one day, but thanks to an incident in his past that changed his life forever, chasing that dream has been a serious uphill struggle...
Taoka’s Unique Magic is called “Time To Shine,” where he can create incredibly bright displays of bioluminescence, which he can use to blind enemies to make a quick getaway or create a distraction (usually to steal someone's belongings). He can also use light to attract others to him like an angler fish’s lure, filling enemies (or prey) with a strong urge to approach the “shiny things”. However, this doesn't work like actual mind control or hypnosis, so it is possible to resist the allure, although greedy individuals would have a MUCH harder time doing so.
Also, this dude loves to eat. He has a bad habit of stealing people’s food, especially if it has seafood or coconut in it, but he's not picky in the slightest. And yes, since this is MY character, he has eaten people before. Made easier by the fact that, despite his appearance here, he's not quite as human as he looks...

I love to think that Rhett and Tessa would visit the beach on a vacation since they both have never seen it before!!! Here's more to find out about Tessa!!
🛏
🌧
🪨
oh my god yes a beach vacation for the two of them is everything to me actually 🥹 Rhett ends up becoming such a beach bitch afterward like buys one those dumbass Salt Life stickers to put on the back of his truck lol but thank you for sending more in!
🛏️ What does your OC’s bed look like? What would they like their bed to look like?
At the Boy's Home, she has a quilt that her mom made for her in high school, fleece sheets and pillowcases with various cartoon dogs all over them. It's basically just what she had on hand at move-in time and hasn't changed it since. And her bed at home is pretty much the same, except the quilt is one her mom made when she was a child and the sheets are just plain white. She loves her mom's quilts, but she does wish that her bed looked a little more grown-up.
🌧️ What is the favorite thing for your OC to do on a rainy day?
When the boys are home she likes to take them all to the library and spend the day there. Helping them with homework, picking out books, setting them up with fun but educational games on the sole computer in the place. She lets all of them help pick out a movie to bring home and watch after dinner with hot chocolate. BUT when the boys aren't home or she has the day to herself, she likes curling up on the porch underneath a blanket and reading a book.
🪨 Someone gifts your OC a shiny rock. What do they do with it?
Proudly displays it either on her bedroom dresser or on the window sill! Tessa is very sentimental and loves collecting little trinkets that remind her of people/events/places she's been.

Hypnotic master anon here, I'd like to make a Dhawan!master x reader request. (Or whittaker!master) The reader is walking though a market and sees a stall selling jewellery. The reader goes over to the stall the master (who is disguised) shows all the different jewellery to the reader, they grab a crystal necklace and use it to hypnotise the reader. The master then kidnaps the reader (while they are in the trance.)
Trying not to trip as you were gently shoved from side to side around the bustling market you finally chose to push your way to the side of the path. Catching your breath as dozens of people rushed pass in either direction. Taking a moment to look around the stalls you were close to a sparkle caught your eye.
Approaching the stall you saw that it was covered with hundreds of trinkets, jewelry, and gemstones. Slowly you inched closer past the few others looking at the wears on display. Everything was so beautiful, you wished that you could buy something... Even a small trinket, but the Doctor hadn’t given you really any money. He had just told you to explore while he searched for someone he needed to find... You weren’t sure who it was but he has warned you that he didn’t want you to meet them. Still it was somewhat weird of him not to throw you some spending money with a smile and a warning to ‘not buy too much as he wouldn’t help carry your things”.
“Anything capture your attention, love.”
Jumping as the voice startled you, slowly lifting your head to look at who had spoken. She looked far to business-like to be running a small stall in this market. Red silk with gold embroidery- that looked and shines as if it was real gold threat- covered with a shiny black vest. Her blond bob framing her face wonderfully. A dream, entrancing and alluring beyond anyone else you had seen in the universe so far in your travels.
Drawing you in mentally, she screamed interesting. Like the Doctor had when you first met him. Odd that someone else would inspire that feeling in you...
“No? Nothing catch your eye,” she drawled out after you were too distracted looking at her to answer. “Let me help with that then.”
Lifting up a red diamond shaped gemstone on a gold chain she dangled it temptingly in front of you.
“This would look wonderful around your pretty little neck. A sign of who you belong to, pet,” leaning closer you tried to pick up on what she had said almost under her breath.
“What did you-”
“I said that this would look pretty on you,” she repeated the words you had been able to hear as she started to sway the gem side to side.
Entranced, you watched it with wide blown eyes. Somehow you couldn’t take your eyes off of it. Attempting to turn your head away from the sight was impossible too. Dizzy. Head spinning as all thoughts left you. Black spots appeared throughout your vision in the most alarming of manners. What was happening to you?
The distant sound of the market place behind you scared you. It should be louder, more abrasive. Not this quiet stream of background noise that sounded miles away. What was she doing to you?
“The Doctor should know better than to leave a pretty pet of his unchaperoned. Anyone could just whisk them off their feet and carry them away. I think you and I will have quite the fun time leading him on a merry little chase! Proper enrichment for goody goody Doctors is important you know.”
The necklace was draped over you. Still you blankly stared forwards now looking into her hypnotic eyes. Her feral smile was oddly attractive even with the fear it filled you with. Sauntering around the stall to your side she picked you up in one fluid motion. Stronger than she appeared, then.
It seemed as if the other people in the market naturally parted for her to pass them all by. Yet none of them looked at you, so stopped to help you. Could no one tell you were being kidnapped. As if answering your silent pleas someone seemed to point you out to a man that looked like some sort of enforcer.
The woman pressed a soft kiss to the side of your jaw, making them relax and decide not to get involved.
Whispering in your ear she teased you, “make such a pretty, enticing damsel that even when nothing looks wrong people want to try and save you. I might like keeping you for myself more than messing with the Doctor, precious!”

While Tokoyami does possess some qualities of bird behavior like his spring heat, soft chirps and pecks when he’s nuzzling against your head or in the crook of your neck; it’s really Dark Shadow that has more bird like behavior. Every date Tokoyami brings you some small gift, it’s impulse for him; limited edition books, flowers, chocolates, even small little antiques or trinkets he sees in the shop windows while he’s on patrol. Dark shadow also brings you small gifts, his though; are more along the lines of small crystals or shiny little rocks he’s found, seaglass from when they helped Tsu patrol the beach even feathers from the top of Tokoyami’s head and at first Tokoyami is so embarrassed. Until one night when he comes to pick you up for your date and you’re running a bit behind on getting ready so you invite him in. And then he sees them; two matching display cases, the ones with the lights built in, as he moves closer to get a better look he sees that each case is dedicated to the items that both him and Dark Shadow have given you. In Tokoyami’s you have the books he’s given you on one shelf, prints you’ve made of the flowers he’s given you and even some that are dried out, and then a small dish where you have the ribbons from the chocolate boxes he’s given you and the trinkets. The jewelry he had given you was locked away in an antique jewelry box you had refurbished yourself. In the other display had all the little items Dark shadow had given you, they sat organized and polished to a shimmering gleam. The feathers from Tokoyami’s head were turned into beautiful pens. As he stood there admiring the cases you walked into the living room putting in your earrings, as he turned around you noticed tears in his eyes. When you asked him what was wrong he just simply stated that he figured you would have thrown away most of the things that dark shadow had given you or wouldn’t go though the trouble of saving the flowers he had given you or the ribbons from the chocolates. You simply shrugged as you went up to wrap your arms around him, “I love you Fumi; I love the both of you and if Dark Shadow thinks something is important enough for me to have it of course I’m going to save it.” Safe to say Tokoyami started planning your proposal later that evening

bakugi katsuki with hold on by ioi😈😈😈😈
HOLD ON | BAKUGOU
ioi pls <333
It’s not an ideal situation to realize you love him, but it happens when you nearly die trying to set up for the school festival.
“Todoroki! Can you get me the extra lights?” Midoriya calls out from somewhere to your right—he’s in the midst of wrapping a light post with strings of tiny bulbs; there’s a line of similarly decorated poles on either side of the pathway.
You’re busy hanging up a banner with Plus Ultra! painted on in a bold yellow, standing steady on a ladder. It’s sunny and loud as everyone flits around in their own world, buzzing with anticipation to see the final product in a week’s time. The courtyard is a mess of colors and glitter and stars.
“Uraraka, you should put that box next to the others”—there’s the jangle of Tsuyu carting around trinkets for the pop-up stall to your left; she sounds like she’s distracted—“then you can help me with these.”
You don’t know how or why you pick up those two snippets of conversation from either side of you, but you do know your brain is belated in realizing what they mean—the stacks of boxes and lights are right next to where you are and if Todoroki and Uraraka are both heading to the same place...
Out of the corner of your eye, you see Todoroki round the corner, just as you finish tacking up the final corner of the banner. You don’t need to look down to confirm what you recognize as Uraraka’s hurried footsteps from the other direction.
Everything happens in slow motion from that point—the crash of your two classmates as they predictably run into each other sounds and Todoroki’s hand shoots out to steady himself against the nearest wall as he apologizes to Uraraka (“Oh— let me help you pick those up. I didn’t see you, sorry.”), which would be fine and all if that “wall” didn’t happen to be your ladder.
It wobbles before Todoroki can realize his mistake and the wrung slips out from under your foot. Your heart drops, mind blank and reeling, the air cold—suddenly you’re falling, scream caught in your throat. Damn you, Todoroki, is the only coherent thought you have.
You squeeze your eyes shut, prepared for the impact and then... then... then there’s nothing.
Actually, no—there’s something. Something sturdy that cushions your fall. That’s it? It’s a little anticlimactic. Your landing wasn’t the softest but you certainly didn’t end up on the ground like you thought you would (unless the concrete magically got softer within the past five seconds, which you really don’t think it did).
Tentatively, you pry one eye open. Bakugou blinks down at you, disinterested. Confused, you take stock of the situation—evidently, Bakugou had broken your fall and caught you.
Oh. This is... well, a.) this is preferable to being incapacitated right before the festival you’ve been waiting for forever, and b.) this is... new (obviously).
“Can’t you be more careful, you idiot?” Bakugou grumbles under his breath. He’s certainly a lot less explosive than you thought he’d be about this and his voice is almost... soft? You find yourself looking up at him, lips parted and eyes wide because the last thirty seconds were... a lot. Also... this is an interesting view.
Bakugou scowls. “What the fuck are you staring at?”
That wakes you from your stupor and you shake your head out of reflex, wordless. He scoffs, rolling his eyes, but sets you down without any further comment. Something crunches underfoot as you stand and upon closer inspection, you see that it’s an ornament—all around, spilled on the ground are similar shiny decor, white and red plastic bulbs (some with letters that probably spell out Plus Ultra! when put together) that thankfully don’t seem to have cracked. When you notice the empty container at Bakugou’s feet, you realize he dropped them in his haste to catch you. Without sparing you a second glance, he crouches and begins to gather them up silently.
You blink at the display.
Then, you remember that you should say something—“Thanks,” is all you manage, heart still racing from the fall. Through the dull ringing in your ears, you register the others rushing over, asking how you are, worried and frantic—you ignore them for now, still staring at him, almost wanting to say more.
Bakugou looks up and studies you for a moment, as though checking to make sure you’re really okay, and then quickly ducks his head as he reaches for a fallen silver ball. “Whatever.”
You shift your weight to your other foot and in a moment of clarity, crouch next to him to help as a sign of gratitude. He doesn’t swat your hand away or tell you he’s got this, so quit bothering him, you fucking extra, and—you’re not really sure—but you think you can feel him glancing at you in his peripheral (not as slick as he thinks he is) as you work.

I know requests are closed but I would love to see a little snipet of the mimic shop au. Its just so cute
I'm happy to do a snipet since I am in love with idea
---------------------------------------
The front door creaked open as a customer slipped into the shop. The ambient chittering that usually filled the dusty shop ceased into silence as the woman approached the front desk. Greeting you with a friendly smile and a ‘good morning’.
“Good morning, what can I help you with?” You asked as you leaned against the counter between you and the customer.
“I talked to you about an hour ago on the phone? I was bringing down my grand-mother’s earrings for you to inspect?” The woman replied. Opening her purse to retrieve a small wooden box. She flipped open the plainly carved lid to display a set of beautiful pearl earrings.
“Oh, yes! You wanted to sell them. I forgot to ask you on the phone if they were magical at all?” You held out your hands and the woman passed the small box to you. They were gorgeous. With thin rose gold metal twisting around the pearls like vines. Tiny thorns could be seen along the metal and you felt your fingertips tingle as you brushed your fingers over one of them.
“A Curse was recently removed from them.” The woman informed you. “My Grand-Mother was a crazy old bat. Always thought her grandkids were trying to steal her jewels. She Cursed them before she passed. So, none of us could have them. Even though I was left with all of her jewellery in her Will. She made it difficult to love her sometimes.”
You politely nodded along to the story as you inspected the pieces. Placing down the box with one of the earrings still in it as you let your Magic flow into and around the pearls. There were traces of the Curse. Nothing but harmless remnants of Dark Magic. You were relieved to sense that the last of the Curse was disappearing and it had been removed by a professional. Not some home-body novice who merely hid Curses behind walls still within the pieces.
“They’re very beautiful.” You said, letting your Magic fall away. “I can give you a hundred and ten dollars for the pair. Since the pearls are natural and the metal seems almost new.”
“That’s fair. I am sad that I’m giving them away but…oh, where’d the other one go?”
You looked down at the counter to where you had placed the box. Only to find the box bare and facing your clutter of trinkets by the register. You frowned and waved your hand over the area. Your Magic pulsed gently. Tendrils of energy flowing over your ornaments and small trinket boxes until you heard a giggle radiate from a music box. Your frown deepened. The music boxes were near the back. And you weren’t expecting anyone to pick up one today.
You scooped up the music box and placed it between yourself and the customer. Who was looking around her feet for the missing earring. Muttering that she must have knocked it off the counter.
“Cough it up.” You said firmly. Placing your hand in front of the box. Nothing answered. Unsurprisingly. The giggling stopped and the customer looked at you with a cocked eyebrow. “Sorry. Mimics. My store is home to a few of them.” You said rolling your eyes. You went to the drawers by the register and opened each one until you found the shiny collection of buttons. You scooped a few into your hand and waved them in front of the music box. “Look, shiny right? Give me the earring and you can have one.”
For a moment, the box stayed perfecting still. Until it creaked open with a soft gurgle and a long, pink tongue rolled out from within the porcelain box. The earring slid off the slimy tongue and thin furry hands eagerly reached for the buttons. You allowed the mimic to take two polished buttons. Placing them on its tongue and then snapping shut with a little giggle. The creature shivered as you patted the lid and slid the box back into its original place by the register.
“Again, sorry. They’re sneaky little critters.” You mumbled as you took a rag from your pocket and started to clean the earring of slobber.
The customer had recoiled away from the counter the moment the mimic revealed itself. Her fingers clutched her bag tightly and her eyes were wide. Glancing about feverishly as you finished the earring. “Y-You have a lot of them in here?”
“A few. Nothing big enough to hurt anyone.” You replied with an affectionate smile. “The biggest one I have is a cabinet at the back. But they’re not really a threat. They get a steak burger every morning when I come in. So, they don’t need to eat the customers.”
The customer didn’t want to believe it, but she swore there were a pair of glowing orange eyes glowering at her from the shelf by the window. Peering through the cracks of a vase that was covered in dust and looked like it had been dropped many times in its life. She spun back around as you carefully opened the plain wooden box to ensure no small critter had slipped inside, before placing the earrings back into the cushioned lining.
“Do people buy them? Or sell them to you?” The customer asked. Holding her purse tightly shut and in front of her as you counted out the money.
“Most of them just find their way in here. I don’t purchase anything that could harm people. And since Mimics can be considered pets or beasts, I’m not licensed to sell them.” You held the money out to the customer and she thanked you with a shaky smile. “You don’t like Mimics I take it?”
“Childhood trauma,” She said with another shaky smile. “Um, thank you. I hope those earrings go to a good home.” She was quick to flee from the shop after that. You glimpsed her go through her purse and check everything thoroughly outside the shop. Until she was satisfied that no mimics had entered her stuff, she quickly strutted away without a glance behind her. You sighed and removed the earrings from the box and carried the earrings to the back for labelling and placing. You left the lid open and placed the empty wooden box on one of the shelves as you passed. When you returned, there were many more small to medium boxes on the shelf than normal. And the plain wooden box was closed tightly shut. You could hear growling from many of the boxes. But with a few small pats to the lids and softly cooed words. The critters calmed and you returned them to their usual places on various shelving’s and cabinets.

Perks of Beholding
Summary: Jon gets distracted from paranoia by learning he can now understand animals. This somehow solves all their problems. Or: Jon turns into a Disney princess the fic.
No Warnings apply. It’s just fluff. Heavily inspired by this lovely TMA comic: ___
It started with the Admiral. Jon was about to read the first statement his mysterious benefactor had sent when he heard a small "Jon!" from the kitchen. It had a strange, rumbling undertone to it and sounded as though a human was trying to imitate a cat.
Jon startled so hard at the unfamiliar voice that he send the papers he had in his hands flying. Instinctively grabbing the tape recorder he sprung up.
"Who's there!"
The Admiral came out of the kitchen, rubbing against the doorframe and purring. "Jon! It's time for a midday snack."
Jon blinked hard, wondering if he had lost his mind entirely, while a much louder voice was screeching in delight.
"Admiral! I can understand you!"
"Give me food Jon, I beg of you. I'm famished."
The Admiral jumped up on his lap, claws snagging on the worm hole riddled arm. It should have already been healed, but Jon continued picking on it.
"Ah..ha. Careful please. I'm damaged goods."
"My apologies. Now food and then cuddles? I crave attention."
Statement forgotten Jon spend the rest of the afternoon debating with Georgies cat about the pros and cons of feeding the Admiral without Georgies consent, sneaking snacks anyway and cuddling on the couch.
To say that Georgie was bemused when she got home was an understatement. "You can speak cat now. Are you shitting me?"
"No. It's amazing! Georgie this might be the only good thing to have happened to me in years!"
Georgie rolled his eyes, grinning. "Don't be so dramatic. So what? Are cats really planning to overthrow us lowly humans? What is he saying?"
"I'm pretty sure he wouldn't tell me if that was the case. Admiral is there anything you'd like to say to Georgie?"
The Admiral, who hadn't budged from Jons chest since after he had been fed was staring straight at him. "Tell her I love her."
Jon turned to Georgie with the most serious face she had ever seen on him. "He wants you to know that he loves you." He announced gravely. And then, after a short pause. "But he loves me more."
"I didn't say that."
"He didn't say that!"
"No, but I know."
The Admiral bit at his finger and then immediately licked the raw skin as an apology. "Unruly kitten."
"I'm not a kitten!"
"You know I'm not sure if the noises you make are cute or creepy."
~~~
His language comprehension skills didn't only focus on cat speak, Jon found out soon after. He had been brave enough to step out of Georgies flat to go for a quick walk (and buy some cat food that Georgie refused to get for the Admiral), when a voice from above cooed at him.
"So shiny!"
Jon froze at the croaky exclamation, scanning his environment and trying not to panic. There was no police nearby. Which was good. But also bad if this was going to turn out to be a robbery. There weren't any people around at all, actually. Jon had gone out at an ungodly hour as to avoid big crowds and thus being seen.
The only being he could make out was a crow perched atop a lantern, gazing down at him. Jon pointed at himself. "Are you speaking to me?"
The crow tilted its head. "It would seem so, human."
"Oh. What is it that you find so shiny?"
It considered his question for a moment, then flew down. Jon flinched when the bird landed on his shoulder, a sharp beak tapping the hair clasp Jon had used to keep his mess of a hair out of his face.
"This. I'd like to have it."
Jon itched to stroke the black feathers that caressed his cheek. A childish excitement that he hadn't felt since uni thrumming in his chest.
"You can have it. Just let me take it out first."
The crow hopped on his other shoulder, nibbling at his scarf while Jon gently untangled the clasp from his locks, careful not to jostle his new friend too much.
"There we go. Here."
"Thank you. This kindness will not be forgotten."
Jon watched the bird fly off with his possession and wished his human encounters could go so smoothly.
Word did get around fast that he was a friend of corvids and provider of shiny things. Wherever he went at least two or three crows or ravens would appear within minutes chatting him up. Most of his spare change went to them and soon he found himself buying little trinkets for them to carry off.
In the weeks that followed Jon got out more and more, keeping to parks at unreasonable hours, driven to converse with all kinds of wildlife. He hadn't touched most of the statements he had been send, too fixated on the new, harmless ability he had been granted. This had improved Georgies and his relationship immensely. She had been worried that he would obsess over who could have murdered Leitner. Him going out and talking to various animals might not have been any less strange, but at least it felt harmless enough to her that she left him to it, sometimes even tagging along.
Jon had always felt it easier to communicate with animals. And this didn't change with his new ability. Interactions were simple and their stories were interesting, with a perspective foreign enough to catch his interest. Animals viewed the world rather differently, had different priorities and had less behavioral rules that Jon could mess up.
And they weren't shy to seek out his touch once they got to know him. More often than not these days Georgie would find him with a squirrel draped around his neck, a bird pulling his hair or a cat in his arms. He had even tried to talk to some insects once, but told Georgie with a look of disappointment that they didn't have the mind for idle chatter.
Like humans not every animal was friendly or even a good conversationalist. There was a white and grey pigeon nesting close to Georgies flat, who made for dreadful smalltalk and couldn't hold a thought to save its life. And Clara the sparrow loved to spew a litany of curse words at him, because she found they sounded funny.
In the end, however, his curiousity to learn more about his abilities led him to check out more of the statements and eventually, try and contact Jude Perry. They met in a quaint little café, opting to sit outside because of Judes flamability and Jons want to have a better chance of escape should anything go wrong.
Jon didn't shake Judes hand when she first asked. But after her statement and her willingness to give him the contact of an acquaintance he felt he had to. He reached out to take her hand when a crow dived down and crashed between the two. The ball of black feathers shook itself and snapped sharply at Jons hand.
"What do you think you are doing you lanky idiot! Do you not have any instincts left in your body! What are you?! A fledgling? Shame on you! You nearly gave us a heart attack!"
"I'm sorry, but you really should fly away. Your feathers are beginning to sizzle- Ow!"
The crow had squawked at him in a rather unbecoming manner for such a lovely lady, but had heeded his warning and flown onto his shoulder, opting to snap at his ear and pull it to get him to leave the firey lady, cussing him out all the while.
"I get it, I get it! Please stop assaulting my ear."
"What."
Momentarily having forgotten his audience in order to get the furious crow out of his hair, Jon send Jude an apologetic smile.
"Sorry. Marah seems to be quite against me shaking your hand. Ow. Would you stop that I'm not doing anything!"
"You can speak with animals?" Not even Jude - I'll burn everything you love to the ground - Perry seemed to be immune to the craziness of the situation. Her grin had turned from feral to amused. The air around her had gotten colder as well.
"Ah, yes. Wasn't Gertrude also able to do so?"
Jon had finally been able to get Marah out of his hair and was cradling her against his chest, patting down her ruffled feathers and let her play with the shiny decorative coins that hung from his scarf.
"I don't think I've ever seen her doing that. But then everyone Becomes differently."
"Becomes? Ah... right sorry, no further questions. I... I guess I've always had more interest in animals then humans. Could that... I mean that could be the reason."
"Could." She echoed him, eyes fixed on the crow nestled in his arms.
A flutter of wings made both of them look up and startle at the sight of dozens of black birds perched along the roofs staring down at them.
"Did you call them?" She hissed.
"No. It's not like I can control them. I occasionally give them stuff? And they make great conversation partners. I guess they're just pretty protective of me?"
"Fledgling." Marah huffed, winding one of his long locks around her beak and tugging.
"Ow. They call me fledgling for some reason."
Jude snorted into her boiling coffee. "Yeah that checks out." Her gaze skimmed the dark wall of feathers above them. People around them had become uncomfortable as well, hurrying to get out of the area. The waiter was giving them nervous glances, too.
"If it would ease your mind I doubt they'll try to attack you if you play nice?"
"You sound awfully unsure of that."
Jon shrugged as best as he could without jostling Marah too much. "I'm still not sure how all of this works. That's why I'm looking for other avatars."
Jude shook her head and laughed. "A Watcher not Knowing something. The world never ceases to surprise me." She took out her phone, which had a cracked display, the plastic scorched where her fingers touched, but miraculously was still functioning. "Give me your number I'll forward you some of my contacts."
"Thank you!"
"Don't. You'll pay me in cute pet pictures. Once weekly."
Jon smiled, that sounded like a much better price to pay than a scorched hand. "I'll do that. Any favourites?"
"Owls." Jude said without hesitation, then blinked and scowled at him. "You'll have to get a grip on that if you don't want Mike to throw you out the window."
"I'm sorry. I really don't mean to do... whatever I'm doing."
"Watch your wording then. Don't ask questions or whatever."
Jon sighed, holding out his phone for her to copy his number. "Right."
He bought Marah her favourite pastry as a thank you for saving him and promised to get her that pretty ring she had seen. It was quite expensive, but Jon thought it was worth it.
~~~
Jon was a bundle of frayed nerves when he went to visit Mike Crew. They had written back and forth a bit over the days and no matter how much Jon tried to coax Mike into meeting him somewhere more open the Avatar of the Vast never budged.
So here he was, sans crow support, knocking on the door of a serial killer. The young man that welcomed him in was only shorter than him by maybe an inch or two. He had donned a fake smile and was asking if he wanted some tea.
Jon didn't. He had a set of questions, hungered for Mikes statement. But Judes warning stopped him from immediately going for it. Drinking bland tea he didn't want was probably the better alternative to being thrown out a window. Not that that was still a very real possibility afterwards.
"I'd love to. Thank you."
Mike seemed surprised that he had taken him up on the offer. "Huh. Well then. Come in. I only have Lavender and Peppermint, any preferences?"
Jon tried to distract himself from the very obvious scar on Mikes neck by taking in the spacious flat he had just entered. "Peppermint sounds nice."
"Peppermint it is, then."
Jon trailed after him into the kitchen, a bit lost on what the etiquette was when being a first time guest. Was he supposed to wait somewhere? Go to the couch? Was he even allowed to take a seat before being told?
At least he had gotten better at small talk. True Mike Crew wasn't an animal, but Jon had found out that being nice was actually well received by humans and avatars alike. (What a shocker.)
"You have a lovely apartment."
Mike shot him what looked like a genuine grin. "Thank you! A gift from Simon. He's taking good care of all the new Vast avatars. Tends to try and adopt them, but I quite like my autonomy and the family parties he throws are dreadful."
Jon couldn't help but pout. The terminology didn't confuse him as much anymore. Jude had deigned to explain that to him via text, with a lot of gloating and bad puns. "I wish the Eye would be so welcoming. I swear for an entity that's all about knowing it doesn't tell me shit."
"Tough. You sure you work for the Eye and not the Web? Here. Come on don't just stand there like a bean pole the couch is a perfectly good place to sit."
"Good lord I hope so. I hate spiders."
"Cheers to that."
Not asking questions was hard. Jon was an impatient man, endlessly curious. And something within him craved Mikes statement. He opted to be honest with Mike about that, telling him without turning it into a burning question and the Avatar nodded in understanding.
"Alright I'll tell you my story then. Because you were nice enough not to ask and we short people should work together."
Jon hadn't been prepared for the sad tale that had been Mikes life. It seemed that he had only been able to somewhat settle down in the last few years. Being on the run for so long, Jon could only imagine what it did to a persons mind. He was only being wanted for murder for a bit now and the stress and paranoia was already killing him.
"Huh." Mike blinked when he was done, tea gone cold in his hands. "That was actually pretty therapeutic. I'm not opposed to doing this again."
They talked idly for a while after, Mike far less aggressive in his attitude than Jude, although he did lightly threaten him once or twice and gave him a horrible case of vertigo when Jon accidently insulted his taste in books.
Their conversation was interrupted by a knock on the door and Mikes eyes narrowed. "I thought we agreed you'd come alone."
"I did." Jon defended himself, fear easily flooding back into his body.
They both stood and carefully inched towards the door. Just as Mike was about to open it, mouth already open to scold whoever had dared to interrupt him, a chorus of loud hisses, meows and a surprised shout made them freeze.
"Jon! A Hunter is here! We've got her handled. Run!"
Not thinking Jon snatched Mikes wrist and pulled him away from the entrance to the flat. The floor underneath him seemed to give way, but Mike at least hadn't fully thrown him into his domain. He dragged them both deeper into the flat. "Shit that's Tonner."
"Who?"
"The police. I ah... might be wanted for murder at the moment. I thought I've been descreet enough. But apparently not. Sorry."
He didn't like that Mikes eyes gleamed with a newfound respect after hearing that. "Oh yeah. I forgot that murder was illegal for a moment. Who did you kill?"
"I didn't." Jon scowled. "I was framed. It was Jurgen Leitner."
"Leitner?!"
"Hmhm. Turns out he was hiding below the institute the whole time. Honestly he was a rather pathetic old man."
Mike tsked. "Good riddance."
"Quite."
Mike eyed the window as the cursing from outside continued. They both flinched when there was a gunshot. Jon lurched forward, running towards the sound, only to be harshly janked back with surprising force. "What the fuck are you doing?!"
"She's shooting the cats! I need to save them!" There might have been a bit of static in his voice, fueled by the panic.
An inhuman growl came from outside and a layered voice shouting "Stay back!".
"That's a Hunter out there!"
Jon only let out a pathetic whine. His cats. He couldn't leave his cats! But the arm around his waist didn't let him go. Mike cursed behind him.
"You're crazy. And weird. You owe me for this."
"I can pay in cute animal pictures."
Mike snorted and let Jon go, leaving him to open the door. As soon as Daisy was in sight there was a loud Pop and a yelp, then she was gone. Jon knelt down in the mass of hissing fur, hands stroking over every body he could find, frantically looking for injuries on any of his babies. They came to him immediately, butting against his hands, chanting "Jon!" and started to purr up a storm.
"I think she just fired a warning shot." Mike mused, pointing towards the ceiling.
Jon heaved a huge sigh. "Oh thank god."
Mike tilted his head at the strange display before him. "Are those free of fleas?"
"Of course! They all are perfectly well behaved, clean angels."
Mike rolled his eyes. "Cool. They can come in then. I'm sure they just saved both of our lifes. Might as well reward them a bit."
And that was how Jon joined an impromptu sleepover at a supernatural serial killers flat, drowned in cats and delightfully tipsy, because Mike insisted on drinking to not dying.
The next morning greeted them with more knocking, which was nearly drowned out by the screams of the cats begging for food. Mike shot him a tired look.
"I deal with the cats. You open the door. You only presumably killed one guy. I'm sure they won't shoot you on sight."
Jon really didn't think that logic was sound, but decided against arguing with Mike, who turned out to not be a morning person at all. Some of the cats came with him as he greeted Basira, who frowned at his entourage.
"I didn't know Mike Crew was secretly a cat lady."
"Ah no, that would be me."
"Right. That sounds more believable. I just came by to let you know that you're in the clear. Elias Bouchard is the murderer. We have evidence now."
"Cool." Came the nonplussed reply from behind Jon.
Both avatars (could Jon count himself as an avatar at this point?) stared the police woman down. Jon unsure how to either continue or end the conversation and Mike probably trying to glare her to death. By the looks of it Basira had suddenly developed a very bad case of vertigo.
She stood her ground, though, clearing her throat and staring right back. "Would you know where Daisy is? She came her to investigate yesterday and I didn't hear from her since."
Mike giggled, Jon sighed and the cats purred in triumph, looking smug. This did not reassure Basira in the slightest.
"Your feral mutt was making a racket outside my flat, Officer."
"She was shooting at the cats." Jon was still upset about that, bending down to cradle one of them against his chest. The good boy immediately began licking his chin to soothe him.
Basira just about held herself back from snarling at them, keeping her cold, professional mask in place. "And where is she now?"
Jon glanced over to Mike in question. The Avatar of the Vast grinned. "Enjoying a long skydiving trip!"
"I'd like to have her back, please. We'll need her to confront Elias."
"We?"
Basira shot him a glare. "Yes." There was no room for arguement there.
Jons shoulders slumped and Mike patted his head in faux sympathy. There was a scream from outside.
"There. Done. See you around Archivist. Send pictures not Cops."
"If I survive this." Jon grumbled, the cats trailing behind him as he left with officer Hussain.
Daisy met them halfway down the stairs and nearly lunged at Jon. Basira took the whole car ride to calm her down. A task that was made even harder by Jon, who was unconsciously bristling with static, still very much furious about Daisy trying to harm his babies. No matter how many times either of the women explained that they would never and that Daisy hadn't aimed at any of them, Jon could not be calmed. This was the only reason why Basira allowed him to take a huge orange tabby into the car.
Really.

Cold Heart
Context: This story was inspired by a tumblr post from tumblr user @cozycullens. The post outlined the potential for sappy holiday content that the original story lacked. The post noted that Twilight fans had to fill in the blanks; I thought it would be fun to write out what Valentine’s Day could have looked like for Edward and Bella. The timeline of this story edits the original canon, meaning the breakup in New Moon and subsequent recoupling happens earlier, allowing the pair to be reunited in time to spend both the Christmas holiday season together and Valentine’s Day. This is before the events are set in motion for the vampire army attack in Eclipse. I’d also like to mention that this story addresses a scene that occurs later in the timeline of the novel. I’ve edited it here to give Edward and Bella a bit of private time that is free of the pressures that the later happenings of Eclipse bring to the moment. In this, I have used direct quotes from Meyer’s novel, and I do not claim to own that content in any way. As stated, this is purely for fun and to share with my fellow Twilight fans.
READ PART TWO HERE
______
The dull blue grey light of the morning filtered through my window in a haze, waking me gently from inconsequential dreams. My natural instincts to unfurl myself from my usual swaddle of blankets to reach for him felt empty and unnecessary. Rather, I found myself spread across my bed in a sweaty mess of fabric.
“Edward?” I said softly, propping myself up to take in the room. I blinked quickly and tried to brush the mess of my hair from my face, speaking his name again as a question. There was no reply.
I tried to think back to the night before; I didn’t think he had gone hunting. No, he had surely been with me when I fell asleep. A compilation of Victorian poetry was open face-down on his side of my bed. We made the trip to Seattle a few weeks ago to get the book I needed to get started on my research paper. I had chosen the topic of Tennyson and Rossetti as an ironic gesture toward him – my very own post-Victorian era angel. He was reading his favorites to me, his voice a velvet whisper when I had fallen asleep in his cool embrace.
No, I was sure he had been with me throughout the night. I ran my left palm over the bare sheet beside me and felt the lingering presence of his wintry skin. It was unusual for him to leave before I woke. It was my favorite part of each day, and his. I was wondering what had called him away as I picked up the heavy text to see where he had left off. As I turned the pages to face me, a small piece of paper fluttered into my lap. The note he had left in his elegant script explained his absence.
‘Who are wise in love, love most, say least. Happy Valentine’s Day, love.’
He quoted Tennyson, I was sure, but the poem he had left open was not the same one he referenced. Instead, the book was open to Tennyson’s ‘Crossing the Bar,’ which was certainly not a love poem. I scanned it quickly, trying to garner any meaning from it without success. My mind was racing elsewhere, my heart beating quickly with exultant dread. So he had gone to prepare whatever exorbitant Valentine’s Day surprise he had planned. As fate would have it, this holiday had arrived on a school day and would provide a public audience to witness the surely over-the-top display Edward had planned for me.
Edward’s obsession with making the most of my human experiences had only intensified since reaching our compromise for Carlisle to turn me after my impending high school graduation. Christmas had been a deluge of cheer and merriment thanks to Alice, who was overcompensating for lost time with me – while also, just being Alice. I was still convinced it hadn’t snowed quite as much as she’d wanted and she had somehow managed a snow machine to fill in my yard for Christmas morning. Alice had laughed off my assumptions as absurd, but Charlie was still trying to work out how our yard had had a good three feet more snow than the rest of our neighborhood.
The halls had certainly been decked in Cullen home, too. It had to be visible from space from the sheer amount of Christmas lights neatly hung on every eave and railing. For the entire month of December, the house smelled of fresh gingerbread and pine. Every surface had been transformed with fresh garlands and shiny decorations. The fireplace in the grand living room was constantly crackling a gentle fire, flickering its light against the enormous tree trimmed with ornaments gathered over the many decades of Christmases past. And the gifts – oh – I couldn’t even bring myself to continue the thought.
I was brought back to reality, the sweet valentine in my shaking hand. I took a staggered breath and made a passing glance at the clock as I rushed to the bathroom. I tried not to think about the day ahead as I dressed. Charlie had already left for the station and the rest of my morning at home seemed to move in a blur of anxiety. I stumbled out the door in a black turtleneck, jeans, bean boots, and my mustard yellow coat. I thought my very standard attire might signal Edward to my disinterest in any outlandish public displays of affection. I drove slowly to Forks High School through the rain muddled snow. My truck dredged through the sludge into the parking spot beside the familiar silver Volvo.
The parking lot was already full and busy with the usual Friday commotion. I looked out my rearview mirror to take in the pops of pink and red from the Valentine’s baubles that everyone seemed to be toting. I had always found the holiday rather arbitrary – a well-marketed event to boost the sales of chocolates and flowers. Until my mother had found Phil, Valentine’s Day was usually spent in front of the television with a pint of ice cream, two spoons, and a chick-flick. I was trying to remember the last Valentine’s Day movie my mom and I had watched together when a quick knock on my driver’s side window snapped my eyes from my rearview.
The morning’s panic melted from my bones as I took him in. Edward was standing there, my favorite crooked smile on his lips, a single and perfect red rose held up in his hand.
“Good morning,” he murmured as I opened my door and got to my feet to stand in front of him. “Did you get my Valentine?”
“Mmm,” I hummed. “Tennyson?”
He nodded, a smirk crossing his expression. “Happy Valentine’s Day, love.”
I felt a blush beginning to mark my cheeks and looked down at my feet as he handed me my rose. He moved to rest that now empty hand above my head on the frame of my truck, leaning to tighten the space between us. His free hand swept down my jaw, his gentle fingers stopping below my chin to tilt my head up. He bent down to press his lips to mine, his cool breath sending my delicate humanity into a tailspin. The kiss was, as expected, refined… at first. Unexpectedly, he draped an arm around my body to pull me closer to his frame. He lifted me effortlessly to continue the kiss as my free hand found its way around the base of his neck and into his bronze hair.
When his response became rigid and he began to return my feet to their reluctant ground, I realized I had forgotten to breathe. My legs trembled against the sudden gravity and he steadied me as I took in sharp breaths. He chuckled lightly and shook his head.
“What am I going to do with you?” he teased.
“With any hope, that, again.”
He took a slow step back and smirked, “I do enjoy sweeping you off your feet.”
My head was still spinning as I grabbed my bag from the truck and shut the door behind me. Edward took my right hand as we walked to class, my single rose in the left.
The rest of the day continued on and I was a happy bystander to the couples declaring their love for one another throughout the day. It seemed each period passed with another sudden delivery of roses, large teddy bears, or chocolates. Joyce Lowell in Government received a loud serenade from half of the school’s marching band, her boyfriend, Aaron, the faux-conductor. Each time the door to the classroom opened my heart skipped a beat with the fresh fear that Edward might have some embarrassing demonstration planned. I wasn’t eager to hurt his feelings and so I kept the question from him all day. I had cracked by fifth period when he finally asked, “Why is your heart is thrumming like a hummingbird’s?”
“I’m worried that you have a grand romantic gesture planned,” I took a sharp breath, anxious for his response. My heart rate only increased when he shrugged and walked ahead of me into the classroom.
I was at a loss for words when he chuckled. “Am I not allowed a grand gesture on Valentine’s Day?” Panic rushed through me before he continued in a more serious tone, “Do you honestly believe that my romantic displays are akin to those of someone like Mike Newton?”
His eyes glanced down at the trinkets gathered in my arms. I thought this tradition had been left in elementary school, but it seemed my friends still enjoyed giving each other Valentine’s treats. Jessica and Angela both had given me small paper crafts and chocolates to mark the occasion. Even Tyler and Eric participated, handing out boxes of tiny heart candies.
The only class Edward could not manage to work out to have with me our senior year was math – considering my being in a far lower level than was excusable for him to fail into. This, of course, was the only class I had exclusively with Mike. I had found it funny that it bothered Edward in the slightest; until today, when Mike seized the opportunity to give me a large stuffed bear, a rather huge box of chocolates, and a clearly handmade valentine. All platonically, Mike had assured me, as he was still on-and-off with Jessica and I was still very much Edward’s – only Edward’s.
I shook my head as I fumbled to stack all of my favors onto a pile on my desk, keeping the rose in my hand to tap lightly on the tip of Edward’s nose.
He tilted his brow at my playful gesture. “You have nothing to worry about. I simply have arranged for us to have a night alone. My family have their own Valentine’s Day traditions and we’ll have the house to ourselves. For this one night could we try to forget everything besides just you and me?” he pleaded, unleashing the full force of his eyes on me. “It seems like I can never get enough time like that. I need to be with you. Just you.”
“No,” I shook my head again. “Just you is good.”
The hitch in my tone caught his attention, but he didn’t have a chance to respond. Mr. Banner began lecturing on optics and light. I couldn’t focus on Physics; I could only hear Edward’s methodic voice repeating ‘I need to be with you’ again and again. Each passing thought brought a new blush to my cheeks that I tried to hide behind a curtain of my hair. I was sure he could hear my fluttering heart, but I couldn’t focus on that either. I was entirely clouded with thoughts of him. I stared at his strong hands, folded together in front of him on the table. How I imagined them on my body a million times, his cold fingertips grazing over my bare skin in the places he refused to wander. It was all I could think of the rest of the day.
When I was back in my room, a different blur of anxiety plagued me than when I had left it in the morning. Edward and I went our separate ways after school. He had filled me in on how exactly he had planned to handle the issue of Charlie. My father was still learning to trust me again and another night out of the house was certainly going to come under some heavy interrogation. I was technically still grounded even though Edward had been following Charlie’s very strict rules to a perfect degree. I was sure that Charlie hadn’t missed the fact that it was Valentine’s Day and I could only imagine the things he would think Edward and I would be doing if left alone. I was pressing the subject when Edward said, “Esme spoke with Charlie today and let him know that Carlisle is taking my brothers and I on a long-promised camping trip. You’ll be having a girls’ night with Esme, Alice, and Rosalie, as Charlie knows it. He’s been hoping you’d be spending more time with Alice soon.”
I felt a twinge of guilt for all the lying that had to be done to protect Charlie. This lie was much less to protect him from the perils of life threatening vampire attacks and much more about protecting him from the thought of his teenage daughter being alone with her boyfriend on Valentine’s Day. The guilt subsided when I remembered that I would get to be alone with Edward.
I stood in my room, hands steadying me on my dresser, knees shaking from the anticipation. The mix of emotions kept wracking me in waves. Edward had made it very clear; we could not be together physically until I was changed. My safety, was not something he was willing to jeopardize to satisfy any desire – which, to his credit, was entirely the reason I was alive. It was difficult to argue with Edward on that fact, but it was so incredibly difficult to argue with my own desires, still. And yet, I felt foolish all the same. I was so intensely human. Though he’d told me many times that he felt the same way for me, I knew he couldn’t possibly lust for me the way I did for him. I was able to reason that point logically, but part of me questioned it in this moment. Had he changed his mind?
I knew what was waiting for me at the Cullens’. It hadn’t been much more than a month since the last time I had genuinely spent the night there for a ‘girls’ night.’ Edward didn’t want me anywhere near Jacob and so Edward had been avoiding distant hunting trips to keep a close watch on me. Alice was all too eager to babysit to allow Edward a satiating hunt; it left me free to be played with as if I were her life-sized doll. That wasn’t what I was fixated on now. The image of the intricate wrought-iron bed burned in my mind. The thought of Edward and I wrapped tenderly in its golden threads made me quiver again, a sigh escaping my lips.
A knock at the front door made my heart stutter. I heard Charlie gather himself up off the couch to get the door. I stopped listening and only heard the light murmur of greetings as I rushed to find something appropriate to wear. What kind of outfit were you supposed to put together to seduce your vampire boyfriend? I was clashing hangers together across the pole, a bit frantic, when I heard her behind me.
Alice shook her head. “You look like you need to sit down. Let me handle this,” she said.
I decided it was better not to argue with her. I was, in all fairness, a mess, and there was only so much harm she could do with my own wardrobe to work with. She confidently pulled my small duffle from the top shelf of my closet and began packing things without truly looking at them. She had already seen what she would need.
I was sitting in my rocking chair when she looked back to me, still absently packing my bag. She looked like she was waiting for me to say something, but I swallowed uncomfortably rather than working up the nerve to talk.
She cast me a sympathetic smile as she removed something from my closet and tossed it toward me. “Try this,” she said.
I stood to change into the hyacinth blue sweater Alice had given it to me as a Christmas gift. Unlike many of the other fashion pieces Alice had tried to dress me in, I did like it. It was soft, probably a thin cashmere, with a plunging V neckline. It fit my frame tightly and was flattering in a way that I couldn’t justify being embarrassed by. She moved to my dresser then, digging through the very bottom drawer to pull out a short skirt she had also gifted me that I was not particularly fond of. Before I could argue, she slung it onto the bed.
“Work with me here, Bella,” she said sternly.
I pulled on the black skirt without a fight. Alice finished off my outfit with a pair of expensive black leather boots.
“And those were a gift from Esme, before you think of disputing them,” she lectured.
“No, I like them. At least they’re covering more of my skin,” I said, zipping them up.
Alice peaked her eyebrows, a smirk budding on her face as she closed my bag. I felt the rush of blood on my complexion again. “Alice – “
“Come on, let’s go before you lose it,” she said quickly, pulling my hand and leading me out of my room and down the stairs.
Charlie didn’t bother looking away from the television as we called a quick goodbye to him. Alice carried me through the slush in a movement so brief that I had no time to process it, placing me in the passenger seat of her small yellow Porsche. Forks blurred outside the windows and in the darkness of the car, it was easier for me to talk about what I was getting myself into.
“Does he…” I asked in her direction, not finishing the thought.
“I don’t think I should really say anything, Bella.” She answered, plainly.
“Since when do you keep things to yourself, Alice?”
She chuckled quietly, “Whatever I say now is not going to help. I’m just dropping you off. You’re not the only one with Valentine’s Day plans, you know.”
“That’s not fair,” I complained. “He’s seen whatever you’ve seen. He’s not going into this blind like I am.”
“Oh, yes he is,” she said proudly. “I’ve been careful to stay away from him today – and it’s not quite clear what’s going to happen. You’ve only been growing bolder in the last few hours.”
Bolder? I certainly didn’t feel it. In the light of the dashboard, I saw Alice turn to me as the car began to slow. We were already in the driveway. When the car stopped, I felt a quick breeze from the opening and closing of her door. She had slung my bag over her shoulder quickly before arriving at my door to help me to the porch steps. I doubted even Alice thought I was that uncoordinated to walk a few feet without falling; she was carrying me everywhere to keep the boots safe, I thought. She set me down on the porch and walked ahead of me into the house. I followed her in, confused.
“I thought you said you were just dropping me off?”
We were in the living room when she said, “I am. Edward isn’t here yet. He had an errand to run. He’ll be here soon and we’ll be gone – don’t worry.”
A fresh blush met my cheeks as I locked eyes with the another set in the room. Rosalie was perched on the edge of the sofa, bent over the coffee table arranging what looked like a large photo album. She had small papers and photos scattered all over the table, some in small piles on the floor beside her. She gazed up at me with the come-to-be-expected level of enthusiasm I generally received, but there was a hint of something else in her expression. It caught me by surprise and left me gawking at her silently. Rosalie’s appearance always struck me, but tonight she was especially beautiful. Her tight satin dress was just the perfect shade of red to compliment her equally satin skin, her golden hair a perfect, elegant twist, and her long bare legs crossed in front of her were only further elongated by her strappy, red stilettos. Alice had done her best with me, but I felt myself self-consciously tug at the hem of my skirt.
That inexplicable look that I had caught in Rosalie’s expression seemed to grow stronger as she gauged my assessment of her. A small smile crossed her lips as she looked back to what she was working on and I looked to Alice, who was dancing back down the stairs now. I hadn’t noticed her departure, but she was already redressed in an ensemble that mirrored the glamour of Rosalie’s. Alice bent one leg up behind her, fastening the tiny buckle on the strap of her heel, careful not to bend and crease the fabric on her burgundy slip-dress.
“Alright, Rose. Let’s not keep them waiting any longer.” Alice rolled her eyes at me quickly before Rosalie noticed. Alice had her keys in her tiny hands as she walked my direction to head for the door.
“I will see you tomorrow,” she said with a coy grin.
Rosalie was out the door faster than I could follow. I turned to Alice as she moved at a more mortal pace. “Where are you going?” I asked.
Alice waved as she replied, “Happy Valentine’s Day, Bella!” The door was shut behind her then. I heard the muffled roar of her Porsche as she and Rosalie left me behind. I assumed that I was completely alone then. I was curious to know where they were going, but my mind was busy calculating other worries. I stood in the Cullens’ living room, taking in the sheer silence. The only sound was coming from the low burning fire still crackling dimly in the fireplace. I unlocked my tense limbs to move toward the heat. I stopped briefly to survey Rosalie’s project and flipped through a couple of pages on the bound album.
Were these all valentines? I picked up a few loose papers from the table and skimmed them quickly. It seemed that Rosalie had been collecting notes from her admirers for decades, compiling the highlights in an album with cards dating back to 1929. Some of the earlier letters were from when she was still human, if I wasn’t mistaken. A few authors were brave enough to sign their names, but most were anonymous confessions. I spent more time snooping through Rosalie’s valentines than I should have, but part of me thought that she must have wanted me to see them. Why else would she have left them all here?
I focused myself again and took a seat on the edge of the hearth.
I was glad I had a moment to gather myself and took the opportunity to take a few deep, but unsteady, breaths. Why was I so unnerved? I closed my eyes and tried to summon my buried fantasies of Edward. There I let myself imagine him, pulling me tightly to his chest, letting his lips roam my jaw, my neck, and the dips of my collarbones. What would he look like bare? I’d only been able to guess the parts of him that were always just beyond my reach. I let those thoughts in too, imagining my own fingers tracing patterns around the curves of his muscles. To bring him close to me, skin to skin – the thought alone painted my face in a soft blush. I bit my lip, letting go a full breath I had been holding. I opened my eyes then and immediately found him.
He was standing across the room from me, a statue of indescribable, sculpted beauty, leaning on the wall casually. He had a peaceful expression resting in his features, but his bright golden eyes were burning with something I couldn’t explain. My favorite crooked smile slowly crossed his lips as his eyes seemed to search my body. I blushed more deeply, a decision forming more firmly in my mind.
I loved him, purely, and every ounce of my body and soul ached to be his. It was exactly the reason I had asked him to change me himself. I wanted his venom to alter me permanently, his lips on my skin to be the last human sensation I’d ever feel. I wanted to be tangibly his, forever; for Edward to lay claim to me in an absolute and eternal way. If I was his, then he was mine. This desire burned in me more brightly in this moment than it ever had. But there were other human sensations I ached for now. And suddenly, I was sure I was not willing to sacrifice them.
Edward moved slowly across the room to perch in front of me. The height of the hearth and his tall body in a crouch before me, leveled us to be equally face-to-face. As he bent, he balanced a small, thin velvet box on my knees. I made no move to open it, so he chuckled lightly and opened it to reveal a small glittering heart-shaped charm. Even in the dim firelight, the brilliant crystal’s intricate cuts glinted countless sparkling rays of color. It was hung on a silver chain as thin as thread.
He was the first to break the silence.
“It was my mother’s.” He shrugged deprecatingly. “I inherited quite a few baubles like this. I’ve given some to Esme, Alice, and Rosalie throughout the years. So, clearly, this is not a big deal in any way.” I could feel his eyes on me, but I continued to stare down, not quite ready to speak. “A hand-me-down,” he reminded me sternly. “You said that was allowable.”
“I guess I did say that,” I said in a whisper.
He chuckled at my reluctance. “I thought it was a good representation,” he continued. “It’s hard and cold.” He laughed. “And it throws rainbows in the sunlight.”
“You forgot the most important similarity,” I murmured. “It’s beautiful.”
“My heart is just as silent,” he mused. “And it, too, is yours.”
I offered the box to him and moved to gather my hair away from my neck, turning to the fire. As he moved to clasp the chain around my neck, I said, “Thank you for both.”
His fingers seemed to linger on the skin of my throat as I turned back to face him. Our lips were only inches apart now. I moved my hands to wrap them around his neck.
“No, thank you. It’s a relief to have you accept a gift so easily. Good practice for you, too.” He grinned, flashing his teeth. His eyes wandered down to take pride in his accepted gift. I was grateful for the plunging neckline of my sweater when his gaze lingered where the crystal charm hung delicately above my chest. I made a mental note to thank Alice later and took a steadying breath. I began to feel cautiously optimistic. Perhaps getting what I wanted would not be as difficult as I’d expected it to be.
No, of course it was going to be just exactly that difficult. I cleared my throat lightly and braced myself. “Can we discuss something?” I asked. “I’d appreciate it if you could begin by being open-minded.”
He hesitated for a moment and returned his eyes to mine. “I’ll give it my best effort,” he agreed, cautious now. He unwrapped my arms from around his neck as he moved to put space between us.
“I’m not breaking any rules here,” I promised. “This is strictly about you and me.”
“Listen to your heart fly,” he murmured. “It’s fluttering like a hummingbird’s wings,” he repeated the analogy he had applied to me earlier in the day. “Are you all right?”
“I’m great,” I said formally. I wondered why I was being so formal.
“Please go on then,” he encouraged.
“Well, I guess, first, I wanted to talk to you about that whole ridiculous marriage condition.”
“It’s only ridiculous to you. What about it?” He was backing further away from me now.
I leaned closer to him, placing my hands on his knees to keep him near me. “I was wondering… is that open to negotiation?”
Edward frowned, serious now. “I’ve already made the largest concession by far and away – I’ve agreed to take your life against my better judgment. And that ought to entitle me to a few compromises on your part.”
“No.” I shook my head, focusing on keeping my face composed. “That part’s a done deal. We’re not discussing that now. I want to hammer out some other details.”
He looked at me suspiciously. “Which details do you mean exactly?”
I hesitated. “Let’s clarify your prerequisites first – matrimony?” I made it sound like a dirty word.
“Yes.” He smiled a wide smile. “To start with.”
The shock spoiled my carefully composed expression. “There’s more?”
“Well,” he said, his face calculating. “If you’re my wife, then what’s mine is yours… So there would be no issue with Dartmouth tuition.”
“Anything else? While you’re already being absurd?”
“Time. I’m finding it quite ephemeral… like it’s slipping through my fingers,” as he spoke, he rose his finger tips to sweep a gentle line over my exposed collarbones.
I shook my head, trying to forget his distracting touch. “No. No time. That’s a deal breaker.”
He sighed longingly. “Just a year or two?”
I refused to give into his burning amber eyes. “What else?”
“That’s it. Unless you’d like to talk cars…”
He grinned widely when I grimaced, then took my hand and began playing with my fingers. “I didn’t realize there was anything else you wanted besides being transformed into a monster yourself. I’m extremely curious.” His voice was low and soft. The slight edge would have been hard to detect if I hadn’t known it so well.
I paused, staring at his hand on mine. I still didn’t know how to begin. I felt his eyes watching me and I was afraid to look up. The blood began to burn in my face.
His cool hand cupped my cheek. “You’re blushing?” he asked in surprise. I kept my eyes down. “Please, Bella, the suspense is painful.”
I bit my lip.
“Bella.” His tone reproached me now, reminding me that it was hard for him when I kept my thoughts to myself.
“Edward,” I said, nervous, staring at a freckle on my wrist. “There’s something that I want to do before I’m not human anymore.”
He waited for me to continue. I didn’t. My face was hot.
“Whatever you want,” he encouraged, anxious and completely clueless.
“Do you promise?” I muttered, knowing my attempt to trap him with his words was not going to work. But he was unable to resist my coaxing.
“Yes,” he said. I looked up through my lashes to see that his eyes were earnest and confused. “Tell me what you want, and you can have it.”
I couldn’t believe how awkward and idiotic I felt. I was too innocent. I didn’t have the faintest idea how to be seductive. I would just have to settle for flushed and self-conscious.
“You,” I mumbled almost incoherently.
“I’m yours.” He smiled, still oblivious, trying to hold my gaze as I looked away again.
I took a deep breath and leaned closer to him, pressing my lips to his. He kissed me back, bewildered but willing, his lips gentle against mine. I began to slide my hands from his knees, up his thighs and slowly toward his waist. I hadn’t gotten very far when I all but heard the click in his head as he put together my words and my actions, his lips freezing in place.
He pushed me away at once, his face heavily disapproving.
“Be reasonable, Bella.”
“Edward, I –. “ He had cut me off, placing a single finger over my lips to quiet me.
“No.” His face was hard.
I was surprised by my reaction to his dismissal. I raised my hand to swat at his. My action didn’t move him, of course, but he moved his hand from my mouth in response. “You are not going to shush me,” I said sternly. “We’re here discussing terms of an eternity together – marriage and other promises – but sex?” I said the word louder than the rest. “Edward, why can’t we talk about sex?”
He was frozen there, hands at his side, eyes locked on mine. I felt the charge of adrenaline passing quicker than it had come. We sat there for a moment in silence with only my quick breathing and rapid pulse as audio. I shifted my gaze down as the rush subsided. It took me a minute to recognize why I was staring at my freckle again, the blush returning – why my stomach felt uneasy, why there was too much moisture in my eyes, why I suddenly wanted to run from the room.
Rejection washed through me, instinctive and strong.
I knew it was irrational. He’d been very clear on other occasions that my safety was the only factor. Yet I’d never made myself quite so vulnerable before. It was hard to beg for the mercy of an angel.
Edward moved then, bringing his hand up to my chin to pull my face up until I had to look at him again. He scrutinized my face for a long moment while I tried unsuccessfully to twist away from his gaze. His brow furrowed, and his expression became horrified as I continued to fight off the onslaught of water in my eyes.
His other hand rushed to my cheek, his thumb stroking there reassuringly. “You know why I have to say no,” he murmured. “You know that I want you, too.”
“Do you?” I whispered, my voice full of accusation and doubt.
He held my face at my jaw now, his fingers on my neck at the base of my hair. “Of course I do, you beautiful, oversensitive girl.” He laughed once, and then his voice was bleak. “Doesn’t everyone? I feel like there’s a line behind me, jockeying for position, waiting for me to make a big enough mistake… You’re too desirable for your own good.”
It seemed like he wanted to press on, anxiety flooding him as it had me throughout the day. I took a breath.
“Tell me if I have anything wrong,” I tried to sound detached. “Your demands are marriage, college, more time, and a faster car.”
“Only the first is a demand,” he said taking a breath. “The others are merely requests.”
“And my lone, solitary demand is – “
“Demand?” he interrupted, on edge again.
“Yes, demand.” I said confidently, looping my fingers around his wrists and tugging until he dropped them. I was not going to concede, now that I knew he wanted this as badly as I did. I would have to be brave for the both of us. I kept my gaze locked on his, placing a hand on his chest to request more space between us.
Edward immediately responded, backing up slightly and resting on his knees with room in front of him. Without breaking the contact we had, I slid down so that we were both on our knees. I brought both hands to the collar of his shirt and began to unbutton slowly, never moving my eyes from his.
“Please,” I begged. “There is nothing I want more than you.”
He took a deep breath. I was surprised that it sounded a little unsteady.
“I could kill you,” he whispered.
I had the last button undone then and slid the fabric from his shoulders to the floor. I was gliding my hands down his chest and placing my lips over his heart when I murmured against his skin. “I don’t think you could.”
As I kissed him there, a low sound escaped his lips. A moan? My body ached in a way it never had. I felt electrified. My heart jolted, words tumbling out of my mouth to take advantage of the sudden uncertainty in his eyes. “Please, try,” I pleaded.
His hands were wrapped around my biceps then, his head bent down to bring his lips to my ear, making me shiver. “This is unbearable. So many things I’ve wanted to give you – and this is what you demand. Do you have any idea how painful it is, refusing you when you plead with me this way?”
“Then don’t refuse,” I suggested breathlessly.
He didn’t respond. I tossed my head back to catch my breath, letting my hair fall down behind me. Edward’s hands still held my arms firmly. “Please,” I tried again.
He bent his head to my neck. “Bella…” He shook his head slowly, but it didn’t feel like denial as his face, his lips, moved back and forth across my throat. It felt more like surrender. My heart sputtered frantically when his lips finally stopped to embrace my skin. The same low sound spilled from my lips now, which seemed to hit Edward with the same electrical shock.
His grip tensed instantly and I was sure he was going to push me away again.
I was wrong.
His lips were on mine, his hands pulling me up to close the space between us. His mouth was not gentle; there was a brand-new edge of conflict and desperation in the way his lips moved. When his hands moved into my hair, I locked my arms around his neck, tightening my hold on him. To my suddenly overheated skin, his body felt colder than ever. I trembled, but it was not from the chill.
He didn’t stop kissing me. I was the one who had to break away, gasping for air. Even then his lips did not leave my skin, they just moved to my throat. So quickly that I wasn’t even sure how it happened, I was in his arms, his lips still exploring my skin, as we nearly flew through the house. Human velocity was not fast enough for him. We were in his bedroom then, still locked in each other’s arms as he fell onto his back on the bed.
The thrill of victory was a strange high; it made me feel powerful. Brave. My hands weren’t unsteady now and my fingers traced the patterns I had dreamed of a thousand times. He was too beautiful. What was the word he had used? Unbearable – that was it. His beauty was too much to bear…
I was on top of him, our lips pulled together again and moving in heated sync. Edward’s hands were exploring my body. His hands were tight around my waist, straining me closer to him. All I wanted was my skin to be bare against his – his grip made it difficult to reach to remove my sweater, but not impossible. Just as I had my stomach exposed, cold iron fetters locked around my wrists, and pulled my hands above my head, which was suddenly on a pillow.
His lips were at my ear again. “Bella,” he murmured, his voice warm and velvet. “Stop trying to take your clothes off.”
“Do you want to do that part?” I asked breathlessly.
“Not tonight,” he answered softly. His lips were slower now against my cheek and jaw, all the urgency gone.
“Edward, don’t –,” I started to argue, trying to free my hands and arching my body to mold myself more closely to him.
“I’m not saying no,” he reassured me. “I’m just saying not tonight.”
I had never felt frustration this way before. I was restless, eyes wild and questioning on his.
“I wasn’t born yesterday,” he laughed. “Out of the two of us, which do you think is more unwilling to give the other what they want? You just promised to marry me before you do any changing, but if I give in tonight, what guarantee do I have that you won’t go running off to Carlisle in the morning? I am – clearly – much less reluctant to give you what you want. Therefore… you first.”
I exhaled with a loud huff. “I have to marry you first?” I asked in disbelief.
“That’s the deal – take it or leave it. A compromise.” Edward pressed himself to me, urging me to accept his terms. His arms wrapped around me, and he began kissing me in a way that should be illegal. Too persuasive – it was duress, coercion. I tried to keep a clear head… and failed quickly and absolutely.
“How did this happen?” I moaned, and not in a good way. “I thought I was holding my own tonight – for once – and now, all of a sudden – “
“You’re engaged,” he finished.
“Edward, no.” I objected.
“Are you going back on your word?” he demanded. He pulled back to read my face. His expression was entertained. He was having fun.
I glared at him, trying to ignore the way his smile made my heart react.
“Are you?” he pressed.
“No,” I groaned. “No. I’m not. I just need time to think. I can’t think right now – give me some time to think.”
He kissed me again quickly. Another too persuasive kiss.
“Take all the time you need.”
He kissed me another time. “Do you get the feeling that everything is backward?” he laughed. “Traditionally, shouldn’t you be arguing my side, and I yours?”
“There isn’t much that’s traditional about you and me.”
Neither of us would surrender in this moment – that was clear. But there were compromises that were pending on the horizon. And, if nothing, I had this night to service my fantasies for awhile. I bit my lip and chuckled.
“I’m curious,” I sighed. “What exactly did you have planned for tonight?”
He didn’t answer. Instead he was up and out of the bed, a hand extended toward me.
I let out my last sigh of contest and threw my hands down on the bed to heave myself up. Edward laughed to himself as I slid to the edge of the bed and stood. I fidgeted in my sweater and straightened my skirt as I walked toward him. I took his hand and noticed him taking in my figure again.
I raised a brow. “Did you want to get back in bed?”
Edward chuckled again, shaking his head. “No, but please do remind me to thank Alice in the morning.”
I rolled my eyes as he led me from his bedroom and into the rest of our romantic evening alone.

Klaus Hargreeves x Powered Reader
-Watch and Learn-
Warnings: buffoonery ensues, fun times
This gif is beautiful and represents the reader v well.
Masterlist
Do you realize shoplifting is bad, yes. Are you about to do it on a dare, also yes. You see, Klaus has been up to no good recently, you put it up to his desperation for your complete and undivided attention.
For about a month you were over in Australia visiting an old friend, and your poor Klaus was left all alone to fend for himself, for 30 whole days. You were honestly surprised that your apartment didn’t burn down, or look incredibly trashed with random street cats walking around it.
Amazingly enough, everything was intact, but oh man did Klaus miss you. For the first day he wouldn’t even leave your side. The two of you laying on the couch and Klaus couldn’t keep his hands off of you. Not that you minded, he was needy and very handsy that night. So let’s just say, no movie watching was happening.
But back to your current situation, here you are outside a high end clothing store, and you’ve never been more ready in your whole life.
“Remember the goal Y/N, some shiny bracelets, sunglasses, a pricy pricy shirt, and something special for, muah.” Klaus purred sweetly in your ear trying to throw you off, but you remain unflinching and determined.
“Piece of cake, this will be a record haul.” You tell him with a mischievous smirk as he grins back at you.
The two of you casually walk into the store, you’ve put on your long blonde wig and dark sunglasses to better conceal your identity if things did in fact go south. Klaus didn’t try much to disguise himself as he walked in looking like some carefree wanderer, but then again, he’s the distraction.
He walks to the nearest group of employees and begins an over dramatic display of fascination for a certain hat that is laying a top a mannequins head. You make a beeline for the jewelry, finding your prize and nonchalantly sliding them into your inner jacket pocket. Easy money. Next you practically glide over to the sunglasses, looks around you before snatching your favorite pair, ripping off the tag and placing them casually into your coats inner pocket. Yours now.
You scan the store for the shirt isle, easily enough your eyes land down an isle to your left where you let out muffled snort. Klaus now has dark glassed Harry Potter looking specs as well as a fancy cowboy type hat. All in all he looks relatively good, like a sexy desert traveler who’s about to steal some hearts. A smile forms onto your face as you briefly watch him keep up his dramatic act of being the best shoplifting distraction you could have asked for.
Turning back to the pricy isle of shirts that altogether probably cost more then your car, well that is if you actually payed for it. You continue forward, your eyes scanning over the silk and leather fabrics, over ones encrusted with jewels and animal fur that you’re hoping is just fux fur. Your keen eyesight finally stills onto a gorgeous Gucci sweater that practically screams take me. You glance up and find where the nearest security cameras are, spotting them, you pull your attention back to the task at hand. You run your hands down the sleeves and swiftly tug, the sweater comes off the rack and makes a quick descent towards the polished tiled ground.
As sly as a fox you kneel onto the tiled floor, picking it up and sliding it into your coat where it’s completely hidden from any prying eyes that might not be minding their own business. With a smirk you stand up, taking the empty rack and calmly sliding on a new sweater that you found at the local thrift store, that’s been patiently waiting for its next clothing rack. You turn down the isle watching Klaus sweet talk an employee who seems to be under his little spell. You can’t help it when your jaw clenches in subconscious jealousy, you know it’s all for show but still, only you get that adorable smile and emerald eyes that at least they can’t see due to his current fashion statement.
Shaking those thoughts away, you ground yourself again to what you and Klaus actually came here for. Now to find something special for your man, scanning over the brightly lit store your eyes widen in excitement at the beautiful jewel encrusted golden snake necklace that only queens of Egypt should be allowed to possess. You coolly walk over to the necklace, your nerves racing in a bustle of excitement as you make it to the glass case that surrounds it. You shift your eyes once to the left and then once to the right, surveying the area for any intruders. No ones in the nearest proximity due to Klaus’ amazing ability to draw in a crowd practically anywhere.
“Oh and look at you, Klaus is gonna love you, not as much as me but hmm you are one beautiful snake.” You whisper to the glimmering metal hiding behind the stores attempt at a security precaution. Reaching out your hand you simply use your power and defy the laws of what humans should be able to do. Your hand phases through the see through glass where you promptly pick up the dazzling trinkets made for royalty. You silently stick it into your bra and turn around, making your way down the isle and towards Klaus and his crowd of high end retail workers.
You walk past him and give him a wink, he takes the subtle hint, says his goodbyes and trails after you towards the doors. You slow down your pace so he can catch up, a sudden arm slings over your shoulders as he kisses the side of your cheek.
“My dear you would not believe what a bunch of kiss-asses those guys are. Enough to match Luther honestly.”
“Well you seemed to be handling them just fine from what I could see.”
“Huh yeah, they thought my tattoos where interesting.”
“They did, didn’t they.”
“Ohhh were you...were you, gettin a lil jealous Y/N?”
“What? Jealous of a couple of blonde bimbos, you need your eyes checked babe.” Klaus lets out a laugh as he opens the stores door for you. You avoid eye contact, your frustration slowly building until he reaches for your open hand. The contact and the way that he leans into your side instantly calming your agitation once again.
“Alright fine. That was admittedly mean and unnecessary, and yeah okay I was a tad bit jealous...but come on Klaus. You make me feel things.”
“Aww Y/N you’re so cute, my little thief. So watcha get?”
“Oh some of this some of that. I’ll show you when we get back to the apartment. I’m gonna have to come back later and destroy the security footage.”
“Oh right, that silly thing those pricey stores like to do. Security cameras.”
“Ruining fun for burglers since they were invented by some paranoid prick.”
“Eh they have their uses.” Suddenly his attention snaps over to a hotdog vendor further down the sidewalk, “Oh hey, you want a street sausage...and I’m not talking about mine..ah Jesus Y/N I was kidding don’t hit me.”
“Klaus.”
“You have a strong arm. It was a serious question before you assaulted me.”
“Babe we have stuff that’s worth more then the building we live in. We should just go home, we have leftover Thai in the fridge.” Klaus abruptly halts the both of you, shifting your body so he can rest his hands on either side of your shoulders as he looks deeply into your eyes, his face shifting into a pleading expression.
“But my tum tum is grumbling...listen to it Y/N...it says feed me or I’ll die of hunger.”
“Wow I didn’t realize you could speak stomach. Klaus you are truly full of surprises.” You deadpan with lack of facial movement but a low sigh coming from your parted lips.
“Do not antagonize me woman this is serious.” He gives you the biggest and most adorable puppy eyes, trying with all of his might to sway you to the dark side. You roll your eyes as a smirk tugs at the corner of your lips. His eyes go wide in excitement, knowing he’s won you over with his usual Klaus charm.
“My lovely lady, you are a gem among the city sewage.”
“Thanks Klaus. You really know how to make a girl feel special.”
“That’s what I do babes.” Replies Klaus with a quick kiss to your lips before he drags you over to the vendor, that admittedly smells quit delicious if you’re being honest. He orders a simple dog for the both of you, actually paying for it himself to your great astonishment. Then he slathers his in toppings as you select a few of your own, then it’s through the city park to reach your apartment. The two of you and your concealed stolen goods, walking casually down the parks walking trail as you both happily munch on your hotdogs.
“Maybe I have too much on mine.” You have a look at Klaus who’s face is smeared with ketchup and mustard as he fumbles with is already messy napkin while you take another bite from your own hotdog in an attempt at concealing your laughter. “Seriously Y/N, it’s all over my face now, I’m a mess.”
“That’s what she said.”
“Ben don’t laugh..” Whines Klaus with a pout as he glances over at you who’s definitely losing your shit. “Okay fine, it was pretty funny.”
“You walked right into it. I couldn’t help myself.”
“Well Ben’s about to pee himself if you’d like to know so good job at that.”
“Thank you thank you I’ll be here all night.” You bow to no one in particular as Klaus finishes off the last bit of his hotdog. You hand him your napkin as you throw your dirty ones in the nearby trash can. Klaus doing the same, now looking much less of a mess, both on his face and hands. He swiftly catches up to you and practically throws himself onto you. You stagger to the side as his full weight begins dragging you downward towards the wet pavement, oh no you are not about to have his lanky ass get you all dirty. As a witches cackle escapes from your mouth you use your phasing abilities and a second later your idiot boyfriend has fallen onto the cold cement. He lets out a yelp as his hands reach out to catch his fall, he does a little tumble before sitting on the ground, a annoyed huff leaving his lips.
“Eww Y/N I was in you.” Whines Klaus as he picks himself up once again, you cross your arms and bite your lip in amusement.
“You didn’t think so this morning.”
“That was very different.”
“Yeah well your fatass was about to send me into the dirt. I happen to like this coat and would prefer to keep it looking snazzy.”
“Your snazzy can kiss my buns, I’m going home and then I can be in you...but not in that way.” He quickly adds as he reaches out for your hand, you gladly accept his appealing invitation and just like that the two of you make your way out of the park and towards the apartment building where some fun times await.

Rakata Prime was an unaffiliated planet on the outer rim. Claims had been reported to the GAR that there had been a hostile invasion of separatist forces terrorising the natives, and the Supreme Chancellor had sanctioned that the nearest General and Clone division investigate these claims. Given their close proximity to the planet (being in the Outer Rim at the time) the 212th had been selected to inspect the nature of such allegations. Cody and a squad were sent ahead of time (with great displeasure to all those involved) as Obi-Wan and the rest of the battalion were needed to wind up on a humanitarian mission they were currently engaged in.
They had landed on the planet two days ago, having spent the first few days taking notes of the landscape and designing a battle plan. Rakata prime was a primarily dry planet, with extensive plains of nothing but farmland and rolling trees.
Easy enough to stay discrete if they stuck to the tree line. But with enough space to plant their heavy guns as a second line of defence.
In all it was the kind of planet Cody had seen a hundred times over.
Once he’s briefed the men he gives the order to press forward, standing back and watching as the troopers move out. His initial intention had been to comm his general in the quiet revive and give him a quick update before the fight begins.
This pause allows him to catch two stragglers fall behind.
He frowns, observing from his vantage point as the two figure seems to linger close to the tree line. The cleanliness of their armour is a straight give away that they’re both shinies: as is their demeanour.
From what he can see, one man is tugging at the others shoulder, helmet whipping back and forth in a way Cody knows is more nervous than observational. His partner is crouched on the ground, hand smoothing over something in the dirt.
Once it appears that the two are going to fall behind Cody starts forward, approaching the pair.
They don’t notice him straight away (something he’s going to have to take note of), but now he is closer he can half understand why. The shiny on the ground is fixated and the shiny trying to pull him away is muttering a nervous spiel of regulations, fingers of his spare hand tapping a nervous ‘click click click’ against his thigh plate in a way Cody is surprised the Kaminoan’s didn’t condition out of him.
“Find anything interesting?” He asks, crossing his arms and taking a step back as the pair shoot upwards instantly, fumbling to remove their buckets.
“Commander!”
“Sir! Commander! Sir!”
Both men are now standing at attention in front of him, which gives Cody a better chance to scrutinise them.
As he had initially distinguished, their armour is squeaky clean- not a scratch or battle tell insight. In fact, it’s painfully apparent that the two men haven’t even had the chance to settle onto the negotiator: the colours of the 212th are absent from their helmets.
The lack of time clearly hadn’t deterred the curious trooper from trying, however, given his paint-stained fingertips. A sloppy line of gold has been added to his companion's chest plate, streaky in a way that comes with using fingers instead of a brush. On his own armour, there is a slapdash attempt at what looks like a wave on his shoulder plate: though it’s clearly bled and looks more like he’s leaned against a wet wall.
Cody appreciates their attempts at individuality, though he is less than impressed by their carelessness so thus displayed.
“What’s your name, troopers?”
Gold fingertips answers first. “I’m jitter! Sir! Commander, I mean. My names Jitter.”
Nervous tapper answers second. “Click, Sir.”
‘That makes sense’ Cody thinks, inclining his helmet and purposely looking in the direction the rest of the squad is headed- now out of sight.
“Well Jitters and Click, you must have a good reason to be falling behind on your first campaign. I’d love to hear it, since it was clearly so important.”
Click begins talking before he’s even finished his sentence, fingers tightening into fists and relaxing. It seems the longnecks had tried to curb the habit after all.
“We are so sorry, Commander. We didn’t mean to fall behind; we can only apologise. We’ll join the rest of the men and report to you afterwards for punishment. Again, we're sorry. Come on, Jit.”
But Jitter doesn’t seem so inclined to move. The shiny hesitates, feet shuffling from side to side in a way that isn’t necessarily nervous. In fact, Cody would stipulate that the movements are not born from anxiety, but are a way of whipping up as much dust from the ground as possible.
“It was my fault, sir. Click has nothing to do with it. We’ll be on our way now; I only got distracted by the flowers.”
That pauses his impeding lecture, if only for the sheer irregularity of the sentence.
“The flowers?”
Instead of speaking Jitter produces a small white flower and holds it up in presentation.
“You’ve fallen behind and risked attack for flowers?” Cody asks incredulously, quirking his eyebrow.
Click’s face is now flushed, and Jitter seems at least abashed, ducking his head down to look at the plant in his hand. “I’m aware it sounds bad. It’s just... we’ve never seen one before, sir. I was only curious, see. We’ve been on Kamino this whole time- we didn’t know there was ground that wasn’t hard and that places didn’t rain all day. And I saw the flowers and got distracted. I’ve only ever seen them in a book, once. I didn’t know they were real things. But it's my fault we've fallen behind; Click doesn't deserve to be punished for my mistakes.”
Cody is taken aback, and the lecture he had prepared dies in his throat.
Sometimes he forgets what it’s like to be a shiny leaving Kamino. Perhaps it was different from him- he was CC class, and his training left absolutely no room or time for curiosity. But for many of their men it’s natural to be fascinated by all the little things life offers.
He’s never met anyone spellbound by dirt and flowers, but the innocence and childlike wonder are vaguely endearing.
Cody sighs, switching his gaze between the two until he starts to see them physically squirm before he beckons his head in the direction of the trees. “Hm. Well, Jitter, I’m sure you’ll have plenty of time after this campaign to explore the exciting properties of dirt. But right now, you’re needed on the front lines. Move out, troopers.”
This seems to spur both men, and Click begins pushing at his brothers back, casting a thankful look at him.
“Sir, yes, sir,” they reply in tandem, straightening their spines and marching on in the direction the others went in.
Cody takes a moment to watch them, shaking his head fondly under his helmet before he follows behind.
Looks like he’s got another twin pair on his hands. If their anything like Waxer and Boil, he’s looking forward to getting to know them.
———
If Cody thought the battle was bloody, the aftermath was bloodier.
He stands amongst a sea of white plastoid that had once been reverently marked with gold markings- now stained red and splattered with mud.
Around him, the bustling sounds of equipment being packed up is eerily loud compared to the oppressive silence that comes with loss. As always, he feels a weighty sense of responsibility as he looks out at the bodies of his brothers: those he knew personally and those who had only just left Kamino. Death does not discriminate; he understands, but Cody is their Commander, and every battle his men die is another blow to his unwavering resolve.
Sighing heavily he scrubs a hand down his face, allowing a lingering moment to breathe through the brief flare of anger he feels at the fact they cannot recover the bodies and give them the funeral they deserve. Such is the consequence of war, apparently. His only solace is that they will have a remembrance ceremony later to share memories about their brothers who are now marching on.
It’s as he’s walking back to the ship that his attention is snared. To his left are two bodies: one thrown over the other. It is not unusual for some of the vode to defend their ori’vod or batch mate. However, what catches his eye is the unusual armour decoration- a poorly painted chest plate, streaks still visibly even under a layer of grime. His stomach drops instantly and he drops his gaze without much thought to the clone curled underneath, catching sight of painted fingertips curled around a fistful of dirt.
A crushed flower lies just out of reach, yellow this time.
Cody closes his eyes.
Here lies a body of a shiny who had only just stepped foot off Kamino. He didn’t know some places didn’t rain. He hadn’t seen vast planets of grassland; he hadn’t seen the great desert plains and the bustle of city planets like Courscant. He had barely seen any of this universe, and now he never will.
He died in the mud that he had found so fascinating only hours before, along with his brother who radiated nerves and careful consideration.
They were just shinies. They were just kids.
But the Republic don’t see them that way. They’re just soldiers, to them.
They’re nothing but buckets. Feet on the ground. Numbers.
Cody signs again, allowing one last moment to glance at the sad scene. Such is the way of war, he understands. But that doesn’t make it much more manageable.
It never has, and it never will.
He bends down, picking up the crushed flower and places it on Jitters chest plate. Then he straightens his shoulders and moves on, heading back to the ship so they can meet the rest of the 212th at the rendezvous.
——
At remembrance that night, no one comments on the freshly painted flower on his shoulder pad.
No one needs to.
After all, no one understands loss quite like the clones.
They don’t have possessions. They don’t have homes with trinkets and items. Memories are all they have, and dedications are all they can give.
Jitter and Click never got to experience much in their life cycle, but Cody won’t let that be in vain. He’ll live for them.
And from now on, he'll take more time to appreciate the flowers.
#okay this has been rattling in my head since I watched the episode#and is based on my last post#but i can’t stop being sad about the clones#ughhhh#anyway#the clones deserve better#commander cody#enjoy my oc’s I love them#I’m sorry I killed them#Cody is the big brother who’s long suffering but he loves all his brothers#the clone wars#my Drabble#this kinda grew arms and legs it was only meant to be like 500 words ahahaha#bad batch

Dire Crowley is a man hard at work, one who wholeheartedly loves his school and every drop of sweat he’s shed while building, repairing, and maintaining its foundation. The scratch of his quill against parchment, the delicate yet deliberate lines of ink elegantly marking his documents, the low and thoughtful hum in his throat as he taps his claws against the table, all of it demonstrates his complete and utter concentration. New students, returning ones, management, fees, staff—he must keep track of it all, organizing existing assets and ordering whatever will be needed for the coming school year. With his mountain of tasks, he scarcely has the time to do anything, even things as simple as enjoying his afternoon tea! Ah, a true tragedy, but he mustn’t stop toiling away. Night Raven College is his pride and joy, and his continual efforts to care for it shall not cease even for a moment. He is kind, after all.
A knock at the door causes him to pause his writing, his quill suspended in midair as he stills. The wood remains unmoved as a ghost—Sir Mallow, one of his secretaries—phases his head through it. They blink at each other for a moment before the spectre clears his throat.
“Mister Crowley, sir?” Mallow brings the rest of his body inside, drifting into the room and hovering before Dire’s desk. “There’s someone here to see you.”
“A visitor? Asking for a meeting now?”
Dire brings a hand to his chin in consideration.
He doesn’t exactly enjoy being disturbed, especially when focused on such an arduous task, and this is rather sudden and unannounced. An excuse to chat or even stretch his legs a bit would be incredibly nice right about now, but he doesn’t have anything currently at the ready to entertain guests. Additionally, putting something together last minute would be a big hassle and not worth the trouble. Oh, unscheduled visits are such a headache to deal with even if they offer a much desired break from paperwork! It’s unfortunate, but he’ll have to decline.
“As much as I’d like to...” Dire heaves a dramatic, over-the-top sigh. “I’m rather busy at the moment. Could you please tell them to come at a later time?”
Sir Mallow wrings his hands—a habit much of the staff frequently point out—and frowns deeply. “That’s the thing, sir... He’s not taking no for an answer.”
“Hm?” Dire raises an eyebrow. “Who is?”
“One Mister Viper, sir.”
He snaps to attention at once, leaning forward in his chair. “Viper? As in, that Viper?”
Surely it couldn’t be that Mister Viper, meaning the famed noble of the Land of Hot Sands, with great power and even greater riches to his name? Of a family said to be the desendants of one of the Great Seven, the Sorcerer of the Desert himself? The man who recently graced the school with his presence, entering his office covered from head to toe in sparkling gold?
Just a couple weeks ago, Dire met with him to praise the flawless and outstanding performance his son—a quiet, brooding boy who spoke only once and glared viciously throughout the entire meeting—displayed during his entrance examinations. He congratulated him with utmost enthusiasm over his son’s acceptance to the school, expressing his overwhelming joy that the prestigious Viper family would even consider Night Raven College. Insisting the very institution was humbled by the Vipers’ presence, he quietly assured Mister Viper that his son would have been guaranteed a place at Night Raven even if he hadn’t passed. He would do anything to please the head of such an important family, after all.
Now, however, Dire is beginning to doubt the effectiveness of his previous displays of hospitality. Could it be that he upset the Vipers somehow? That would be disastrous! With their reputation and resources, they could easily destroy his school in just a few carefully planned moves. Surely that isn’t the case? Surely it is a mere misunderstanding, and Mister Viper isn’t the one knocking at his door?
Alas... “I believe so, Mister Crowley.”
Dread, cold and deep, crawls inside Dire’s chest. Despite this, he quickly wipes any apprehension from his features, turning his distressed frown into a warm, welcoming smile. After all, a good host never shows disdain in front of guests. Opening his arms with a cheerful and hearty laugh, he exclaims, “Well, why didn’t you say so! Please, let him in at once. We are kind, so we mustn’t keep our guest of honor waiting.”
Sir Mallow bows. “Yes, Crowley sir. Right away.”
The moment the ghost leaves the room, Dire leaps into action.
With a flick of his hand, magic surges outward. Stacks of both finished and unfinished paperwork burst into a flutter and begin to file themselves, sheet by sheet, away inside cabinets. Feather dusters spring to life and clean each and every exposed surface with mighty fervor. His work space rearranges itself, morphing from an office desk to an ornate tea table and placing down comfortable chairs. As he pulls his best tin of tea leaves out of a drawer, the table sets itself with his finest china and polished silverware. He rings the school chef for some refreshments to be prepared as quickly as possible before putting the kettle on and sitting down.
By the time Sir Mallow returns and knocks to announce the arrival of his guest, Dire is already pouring tea into his cup. “Do come in!” he chimes, his expression the epitome of cheer as the door creaks open.
He tries very hard not to go slack jawed in shock when it is not Mister Viper who enters his office—it is Mister Viper’s son!
Such an unexpected turn of events! Dire barely contains his sheer surprise and relief as he motions for the young Viper to take a seat, pouring tea for the young man.
The Viper heir—Jamil, he recalls his name was—carries himself with immense grace and poise as he sits across from him, as expected for someone of his social standing. Dire notes he’s looking much more composed and confident than the last time he saw him, his expression borderlining smug. How odd.
Nevertheless, he smiles brightly. “What a pleasure it is to see you again so soon, young Viper! You gave me quite the surprise, showing up unannounced the way you did. You must be tired from your trip here! Please, do have something to eat.” Dire gestures to the desserts lain out on the table, looking on with a pleased expression as the young man plucks a chocolate truffle from one of the trays. He waits for him to finish snacking on the sweet before continuing, “I must ask, are you here on behalf of your father? As I’m sure you remember, I met with him not long ago! He is a very outstanding and brilliant man, and he has many connections as well, correct? Ah, truly remarkable! Absolutely incredible! You know, I actually heard just last week he–”
“I’m not here to run my father’s errands,” Jamil states rather sharply. “I came here on my own. For my own reasons.”
“Oh!” Dire hadn’t even noticed the boy’s expression souring as he blathered on. Perhaps he hit a nerve. “I see,” he backtracks, toning down his enthusiasm. “Then what has brought you here today, young Viper?”
“I want to make a deal with you.”
“Hm?” Intriguing, but unrealistic. “With all due respect to your title, young Jamil, I don’t think it’s possible for me to–”
Out of thin air, the Viper heir materializes a glittering gold coin in his hand, holding it in front of Dire’s face. It gleams and glows like the sun even in the mediocre lighting of his office, and his eyes can’t help but follow its shiny surface as the coin sways back and forth. Crows adore sparkling trinkets after all, and Dire is no exception. Even as the gold piece is placed on the table, he remains greedily focused on it.
Just as he considers snatching it up for himself, the young man strikes, and the prize disappears back into his hand. He then tauntingly rolls the coin across his knuckles, showing off some sleight of hand and causing three more to appear before all four golden pieces vanish once more.
“Actually,” Jamil’s voice drips with arrogance as he nonchalantly examines his nails, “I think it is possible, Mister Crowley.”
Curse his feathers for being weak to such treasures! His inner crow can never resist such a dazzling gleam, and there might even be greater riches in waiting.
He must, at the very least, hear the offer.
Despite his immense irritation upon seeing the boy’s conceited smirk, Dire folds his hands and remains outwardly civil. “I’m listening.”
The Viper’s victorious grin turns downright egotistical as he sets down seven positively radiant golden discs between them. Pushing the coins toward Dire, he states his order:
“Fetch two files for me. I need records changed, information altered, and details fabricated. I’ll give you a basic story. Make it believable, and forge the evidence to back it up if need be.”
“And,” he silences the complaints on the tip of Dire’s tongue with a raised hand, “I want you to make it untraceable. No proof, no messiness. Like everything’s always been that way.”
The allure of the gold is tempting, but even Dire eyes the little snake and his offerings with suspicion. Such a sudden and specific request, and with so much to it as well! How troublesome. His lips curved downward in the smallest of frowns, he counters, “Now, young Jamil... What, pray tell, gives you the idea that I am capable of doing such things? I am merely the headmaster of a school, you know.”
The boy has the gall to laugh in his face.
With dramatic flourish, Jamil opens his hand to reveal a crisp slip of paper. Holding it up between his fingers, he waves it around in a mocking manner before placing it face down and sliding it across the table.
“See if this will change your mind.”
When Dire picks it up, his eyes nearly pop out of their sockets in shock, and his head spins with the number of zeroes staring him in the face.
Jamil, on the other hand, doesn’t even bat an eyelash as Crowley fusses over the cheque. Instead, he takes a moment to preen and bask in the glory of his success before growing bored, rolling his eyes, and snapping his fingers to get the attention back on him.
“You may be downplaying your talents in an attempt to worm your way out of this, but I know the truth.” He points a finger directly at the headmaster’s face. “You’re a powerful man, Mister Crowley. I’m sure you can figure it out and get the job done.”
The man—fae?—changes his tune quick as he pockets the bribes, becoming pleasant and cheerful once more. “Young Jamil, I will fulfill your request!” he declares in a booming voice. Then, in a much quieter one, he adds, “I shall listen, for I am kind.”
Jamil’s lips curl into a devious smile. Perfect.
“That’s what I thought.” He leans back in his chair. “Now, here’s what I have in mind...”

“Sugar Baby” (ask meme).
Alternate meeting fic!
Lucifer & Mammon are in the human realm for something or another, whatever business would require Lucifer to drag Mammon along and have them stay a few days. On the first day Mammon sees something shiny that catches his attention, it's some small trinket that they have right at the checkout counter of shops, it's basically worthless but fuck if he doesn't want it and he's begging Lucifer using puppy dog eyes that he knows for a fact will work if he just gets Lucifer to look directly at him. Lucifer refuses and they're causing a scene and holding up the line. When a human slaps down the thing Mammon wants on the counter and pays for it and then pushes it towards him. The man is absolutely flabbergasted. Just so much confusion. He's stuttering, flushing, trying to say he doesn't need the charity of some random human while also clutching on to the item with a death grip. The human barely blinks and has already started loading their things on to the counter and then Lucifer is dragging Mammon out while still scolding him.
The next day he sneaks out, he doesn't have much money because he'd just finished paying the witches but now that he was in the human world he might as well go visit the kid even if that means the witches will start making their demands earlier. No way he's gonna turn up empty handed though, Mammon needs ta spoil his brat. So he's haggling with the cashier trying to reduce the price of a soft toy (it's a crow plushie - look he didn't mean to pick it up it's just that it looked cute and the kid liked the dumb bird and it's not because of any connection to him okay) when someone drops the remaining cash on the counter and Mammon's freaking out because that's definitely the same human as last time and are they following him??? Are they a witch???? Do they want something???? Are they evil????? And the human's just like I work here????? And you looked like you really wanted it? And it's not that much money??? And Mammon just kinda walks away in a daze clutching the toy to his chest and face bright red. The human stares after him because wtf??? They worked retail part time, they had no money to spare on some random guy just cause he was cute but MC's dumb and smitten so of course they run after him and ask if they can treat him to a coffee after their shift and Mammon who's only ever fucked around and never in his thousands of years gone on an actual date where someone paid for him is so fucking confused because had this human figured out he's a demon? Is this them making a tribute? Do they want to make a pact? But free stuff is free stuff! So he agrees and when they meet up later the human buys him coffee and when he eyes some spicy looking treat in the display case they buy it for him without a word. And Mammon is giddy because holy shit what is happening!? And he's flustered because holy shit what is happening!? And his stomach feels weird and his face is hot and his heart is pounding. And he blurts out 'Do you wanna fuck?' loud enough that people turn to look at them. And the human is confused and stuttering and red faced. And thinking they don't understand he asks them what they want in return for everything they've bought him and then they're cackling and saying they just thought he was cute and obviously he's protesting and saying he's not cute and after that they both end up relaxing and actually having a fun time. Lucifer looks ready to kill him when he gets back.
On the third day he loses Lucifer again and goes to give the toy, later he hangs around the places he last saw the human. Not because he's hoping they'll run into him or anything! They do however run into him and they seem happy to see him and he doesn't think anyone has ever been happy to see him before except maybe the pipsqueak and his stomach feels funny again and his face feels hot and his heart is pounding and the human is telling him about a carnival that's in town and asking him to come with them. Obviously he agrees and they end up paying for games and rides and buying any food his eyes linger on for just a second too long. When he goes back to the room they're staying in Lucifer is there, pissed beyond belief and knowing exactly what's going on (because no matter what world they are in Lucifer still has eyes and ears in every corner). He yells and Mammon actually yells back for once and it's not just the stuff that the human got him it's that the human treats him kindly and with respect and makes him laugh and suddenly he's gushing about them and Lucifer's looking at him with something close to horror. And then Lucifer's mask is cracking and he's talking about what happened the last time one of them fell for a human and "I nearly lost my mind along with Lilith. Losing her, being unable to save her, was the single most painful thing to ever happen. Mammon. I can't go through that again. I can't lose you too. I don't know what I'll do if I lose you. How I'll survive it. Not a human, Mammon. Anything but a human. You've only known them for a few days, leave them. Please."
So Mammon does, they cut their visit short. Though the human doesn't run into Mammon again they do keep coming into money, more than enough to cover everything they bought him. They find loose change in their pockets, they get a bonus at work, they find some cash tucked into their couch cushions, they impulsively buy a lottery and actually win a decent amount.
Mammon who despite listening to Lucifer in the beginning eventually let's his greed (for the human more than the things they bought him) over take him and he makes any excuse to sneak out to the human world (what's the worst that could happen), each time he meets them and each time they buy him something different. It's never anything outrageously expensive and usually that's what he would value but he finds himself hoarding and treasuring every little thing they give him. Lucifer finds out eventually and is beyond pissed and actually locks Mammon up to prevent him from going to see the human (because there was no one in this world to tell him that locking your brothers up when they piss you off is not okay) but when he eventually releases Mammon he's off like a shot back to the human world, back to his human and to the little things they had seen and bought because they thought he would like them, while he was away. And Lucifer stops getting in the way, actually goes so far as to sigh and huff and grumble and give Mammon permission to access the human world only if it means he'll go straight to the human and not cause any trouble on the way.
Mammon's spends a good amount of time with the human and even his brothers slowly, one by one trickle in to the human world to see what's so special about this particular human. And though this pisses Mammon off a part of him is glad that they seem to be willing to accept his human and even more pleased that the human seems to have no inclination to shower them with gifts for seemingly no reason.
At some point Mammon realises he's in love with the human, deeply so, and he's pretty sure the human actually loves him back, and that's a crazy thought isn't it. Eventually of course Mammon decided he loves the human too much to keep lying to them and he needs to tell them what he actually is. So he spends the day pampering them. After, he sits them down and after a lot of stuttering, yelling to himself, dragging his hands through his hair while they sit patiently next on their couch, he slumps down next to them and looking at the floor says, "I'm a demon." When he doesn't get a reply he looks up at them. Their face is blank and they blink slowly. "Mammon," they say gently, "we've been together for 217 years."
The reason Lucifer stopped trying to get in the way is because after locking Mammon away for close to 60 years and then letting him leave so that he'd either see his human aged or dead, only for Mammon to come back as chirpy as ever with more of his little trinkets Lucifer realised oh wait maybe the human isn't actually a human afterall and this should be okay then right

Toxin
Summary: A siren that practices duality of sea and land comes face-to-face with her romantic past. But can it stay in the past or will their addiction to one another be too much to resist?
Pairing: Pirate!Castiel x Siren!reader
Challenge: For @justagirlinafandomworld ’s Pick Two Challenge. My prompts were siren/pirate and the cover Toxic by Sofia Karlberg. This is the third variation I’ve written for my prompts. Back in May I started with different ideas, but I’ve been through so much since then that this story emerged, and I really love it. And I hope you guys do too.
*No warnings*
Word Count: 1.1k
High noon was always a busy time for the market. People crowded the streets, taking lunch breaks and shopping. Servants and errand boys often dash about with bare feet, fulfilling their master’s quests. Pirates woken from a drunken slumber are kicked out from the brothel next door, stagger through the streets past your window, always peering through to ogle at the shimmering luxuries within your shop.
Your shop is eclectic. At times filled with antique jewelry boxes and handheld mirrors. But what the pirates, and most people, are drawn to are the jewelry and pearls. Many pirates stumble into your shop when flush with gold, swap for gems, and often handoff to the women next door in exchange for physical pleasantries. Many fear or hate these men, but you had plenty of experience handling pirates.
The miscellaneous treasures are less in value than your jewels. But wandering women in waiting lingered, eyeing shiny trinkets and betrothal rings. They bring their suitors and hint. Nobles, on occasion, come in disguised to buy pearls for mistresses and wenches, usually in forms that wouldn’t indicate betrothal. Ironic how pearls symbolize purity and dedication were gifted in opposite circumstances.
Pearls are your best sellers, since few mollusks made pearls naturally. The milky stone is near-impossible to come by as there are few mussels in the sea producing such a rare occurrence. Humans could only tell if mollusks had pearls by killing them, murdering thousands to find one. You found little difficulty, able to spot the differences of unhappy mussels and clams which make pearls. You enjoyed the miscellaneous nature of your shop, which happened to sell more pearls than most places in the world. It baffles near everyone. People ask how you obtained your quantity, amazed since few vendors sell the stone. Each time, your lips curl, keeping your secrets tightly wound.
A boy bought a thin, silver band, a promise ring for a girl. He was a few dollars shy, but the story made your heart gush, and you sold it to him anyhow. During the exchange, the front door squeaked, and you see the tri-point of a pirate’s hat in the corner of your eye. You wrap the ring in tissue and tie it with a white ribbon to make any girl his age swoon. You hand him the ring, waving him off. You count the cash and coins as the pirate approaches the counter.
“Ironic that you sell rings, yet you wouldn’t bear mine,” a gravel voice spoke.
A human lifespan could go by, and you would never forget that distinct, coarse voice, that was still delicate enough to be angelic. Nor could you forget the tingle sensation over your skin when those blue eyes so much as glanced your way. And you felt that same presence now. Your eyes flickered towards the figure, unable to look him in the eye.
Across seven seas and five oceans, here he was, standing right in front of you. “How did you find me?” His puffy white shirt was crisp and new, vibrant against his tan skin. He must’ve come into a sum of money to replace it, but his vest was old and worn. Sentimental as always.
“Would you believe that fate would lead me to you?” His fingers dance over the edge of the glass case.
“No.” You can glance as far up as his mouth, receiving the slyest of smiles in return.
You can feel his eyes leave you, fixating down on the case. “Do you dive far for these?” He points to the pearls below as you take a peek at his face. He’s smeared in dirt, but you’d seen it worse. No grime could hide his handsome features or dull the blue of his eyes.
“What do you want?”
His smile dissipates a little as he straightens his posture. “What I’ve always wanted...”
You pretend to finish counting, though you were lost the moment he spoke. You shut your cash box. And you turn away to straighten your displays. He stays where he is, and you feel that tingle ghost your skin. “Tell me you no longer love me, and I’ll leave.”
Your fingers fumble with your products. All you can focus on is him, and how ill-suited you are for him. “Nothing has changed.”
“I never needed it to.” It’s too much. You’d left for good reasons, and you certainly couldn’t deal with this now. You dash towards the corner of the cases, the only gap in the counter to let you pass, wanting desperately to evade his persuasion. But he’s quicker, blocking your form of escape with his body. “You form legs, you breathe air. There are no obstacles to keep us apart, aside from you.”
“I belong to the sea, Castiel.”
“And you sell your jewelry on land.” You have no rebuttal, and Castiel leans down, his face dangerously close to you. His eyes locked upon your own. Whenever you gazed into his eyes, it was as though you were back in the sea. And it brought comfort like no other. And it lures you in every single time. “I live on the sea, and you beneath it. We’re perfect for one another. And that scares you. But what scares me is spending another day without you. Won’t you let me belong to you?”
Damn.
“You should find a human girl. Are you not tempted by the wenches next door?”
Castiel’s lips curl. He knows what you’re doing. “There is no human that compares to your spirit and beauty.”
“I feast on men I lure at sea.”
“As long as it isn’t me.” He’s beaming down at you, knowing he has you on the ropes. “Or, if it would make you happy, I would sacrifice myself to you. I would do anything for you. I will do anything. You think yourself a toxin, and I’m welcome to the addiction.”
You can hide the flutter of your heart, but your cheeks flush, unable to fight the radiant pull of his declarations.
Castiel reaches into his pocket, pulling out a small pouch. His calloused fingers draw at the strings and reveal a ring you’d seen once before. “Pearls are pretty and rare to humans. But diamonds are amongst the rarest. You’re my diamond amongst a sea of pearls. My offer still stands, if you’ll have a pirate.”
Tears brimming at the corners of your eyes as you nod rigorously. He slips the gold band onto your finger, the diamond shining as bright as your smile. You seal the deal with a longing kiss, one that could be used as inspiration for a fairytale.

Little Mermaid AU pt.5
(Co written with @eddieveneziano )
----
MC took them to town and oh my God they are like a bunch of monkeys.
Luke had to yell at them to 'Keep your hands to yourself!' But do they even listen? No. Simeon chuckled while MC had a hand to their mouth to cover their giggled.
Mammon keeps running around and yelling soundlessly at things. He keeps pulling MC's arm and pointing to things. Things he thinks MC would like....
And something he can court them with.
Satan meanwhile goes to every crook and alley to see any books he could find. He is the only one among his brothers that can read the human books and understand their language. He was so excited to see books. Books! Books! Books! He even tugged MC and show them a couple of books that he think MC might be interested with.
Luke is trying so hard to pushed Beel from drowning over a HUGE 3 tier cake. "You can't eat that! It's for someone else! Hey !!! Big guy wait up!!!", Luke went off running after Beel. Belphegor follows MC around not knowing what to do until his eyes falls on the human thing called pilow. MC buys it for him after that.
Asmo meanwhile is running around looking at all the beauty. His eyes sparkles with every beautiful things his eyes can feast upon.
Leviathan was fixiated on a lonely goldfish he saw in the pet shop. Seeing how he looks at the goldfish, MC decided to buy him one. Leviathan blushes and tried to say thank you but MC only petted his head which makes his heart swore.
And Lucifer? Well he's absorbing all the things he saw. He sees how the humans do their work. Some anre running, laughing but what got his attention was a couple holding hands with such adoration in their eyes. He looks at his own hand and MC's.
If only they could do what the couple did. MC smiled at all the delighted and then stopped in front of a store window, it displayed some wedding items. They sighed, MC despite having everything longed to find a partner in life...
Lucifer stared back at MC and then frowned when he sensed loneliness in them. The brothers stopped and stared.
MC turned and gave Lucifer a soft smile and Lucifer felt his heart skip a beat, MC then headed to a shop.
"Simeon if the boys need me I'll be at the jewelry shop"
Simeon nodded as the brothers explored town square and Asmo stared starry eyed at the crystal fountain. So did some of the other brothers.
Simeon smiled.
"I see you like the fountain the you'll be glad to know MC created that as a symbol of the town"
---
Later that day....
"Alright, tours over. Now.....", Simeon took out a piece of paper, a feather and a bottle of ink. Satan perks up, interested.
"Their royal majesty forgots to asked your names. Considering all of you....got your tongues cut off, I have a paper and a feather here so you can write down your names."
Luke huffed and folded his arms. "Simeon, do they even KNOW how to write? They can't even do ONE single chore in the castle! They maybe all the looks but NO talent!", He barked.
'Dog', said the brothers internally. Satan raised his hand. Simeon arched his brow. "Do you know how to write?", He asked. Satan nodded and reached over the table and took the feather delicantly. He studies it and scratches his head. Luke face palm. "What, you never held a feather before???"
Satan shook his head. He writes with a fish bone before. But a bird's feather? Not so much. Luke sighed.
"Fine, fine, here let me show you. And all you scatterbrains better watched! I don't wanna do this again!", With that said, Luke opens the bottle of ink, dips the tip of the feather and wrote it on paper.
The boys 'oooohhh' silently while Satan nodded happily.
Now he knows how to communicate with MC.Later that day MC was given the papers with all their names. Lucifer was thankful thwir penmanships survived the transformation otherwise it would be while before they could even talk with MC.
"Let's see your names him"
He stared at the names, all in colored ink.
"Lucifer, Mammon, Leviathan, Satan, Asmo, Beel, and Belphie"MC pointed at them in order, they all blushed and smiled and nodded happily.
It sounded good when they say.
"Its nice to meet you all, and I hope you enjoy your stay"
'We already enjoy it with you here'Lucifer mused.
"And I almost forgot"MC scrambled onto their shipping back. They pulled out 6 boxes and opened the top and they all gasped.
6 Necklaces each in their favorite colors.
"I thought it unfair I just gave a trinket like this to Mammon only...So I dug around the royal vault and found these for you"
Meanwhile Luke was bemaing with pride at being able to teach them to write as Simeon chuckled.
"You seem proud of them"
Luke blushed.
"No! No I'm not, the scatterbrains needed to learn is all!"
---
Meanwhile...
"Those poor unfortunate souls. So sad~ Indeed~", Barbatos humsvto himself as he dance around, imagining he is at a ballroom dancing with someone.
"Barbatos"
Barbatos looked over his shoulders. He continues to him and he swimmer about in his cave. The stranger glared.
"Barbatos"
"What is it that you want, Diavolo? Adding salt to the wound?", He spoke with such boredom in his voice.
"The 7 sea princes. Where are they?", Said Diavolo as he hold out his trident, aiming to attacked. Barbatos rolled his eyes. Same old, same old....
"And what about the 7 princes?"
"You helped them to get to the human world. I know you did"
"Oh really? And what do I get out of it?"
"Revenge"Revenge against Diavolo for baansishing him to the sea floor. What good of a way then to take away the 7 princes. The sea warlock was once Diavolo's faithful servant until he began abusing his magic.
Barbatos smiled cruely...He dissipated the illusion and swam over close to Diabolo and smirked
"Nothing could hurt the sea kingdom more than having their 7 princes disappear overnight...Imagine the chaos, how it would hurt them"
The trident in Diavolo's hand began to glow brightly.
"Tsk tsk dear Diavolo...I am the only one with the pour to take them back to the sea realm"
Diavolo gritted his teeth.
"Explain"
---
A few days later.
"Ah there you all are!"
MC smiled as they walkef over to their mute butlers. They were doing much better being butlers"
"I was hoping to ask you something"
They all stopped and nodded.
"I was hoping on bringing you all with me to King Solomon's ball, we could dance and I could show around his kingdom"
Dance? Lucifer and his brothers eyes went wide...Lucifer nodded vigtously.
"Great! Why don't we pick some clothes in the town for you all"
MC offeeed their hand to the brothers.
---
Dance? Dance? Dance!
Oh! Oh! Ever since they took dancing lessons with Simeon and Luke, the brothers are slowly learning and are getting better at it.
'Oh what should I wear? Pink? Yellow? Purple???', Asmo silently squel as he looks through the clothes in one of the shops that MC took them. Both Belphie and Beel decided on a simple tux as they don't want to overdo much. Mammon decided on something to reveal his chest so that he could charm MC. Satan also decided on a simple tux. Levi wanted something like shiny armour but MC told him that it'll be hard for them to dance with him and it made him blushed. Lucifer decided on a long tux that he hope will impressed MC.
.
.
.
"Are you sure MC? I thought that-"
"Even thou he's not the one who saved me, he was there for me Simeon...I just cannot refuse"
"Are you sure? What about them? The brothers I mean"
MC smiled. "I'm sure I can help them find happiness ! They are really kind and sweet!"
---
It was he ball, oh gosh it was nerve wracking but...
MC found that perhaps Solomon's proposal was more political than anything...They sighed, they thoughtbthey had found the one...
MC stopped sipping their drink when they felt a tap on their shoulder and turned to see who it was. Lucifer offwring them a hand.
"You wanna dance with Me?"
Lucifer nidded.
"Alright Lucifer.."
They carefully took his hand, and soon they were on the dance floor. Lucifer felt the pain of his feet lessen as he danced with his love, his brothers watched with envy but were happy.
MC smiled up at Lucifer.
But then frowned.
"I wish I could find someone for me sometimes you know Luci, everyone that wants to marry me...They just do it for political ties...Nobody like a royal that is kind to the poor I guess"
Lucifer frowned. He tilts their chin so that their eyes meet. He smiled. A genuine smile. He mouthed. "I love you", he said. MC blushed knowing the words he said.
"I um...I needed some fresh air. Please excuse me...", After the first dance, they biwed before leaving.
Satan was the first to approached and nudge him in the side. 'Don't be so full of yourself. We want MC too', he smirked. Lucifer smirked back.
'Who says I'm sharing?'
