Machete and Vasco are so pomegranate-and-the-hand-that-slices coded. To me.
Pomegranates are seen as messy, bloody, inconvenient fruits. You slice or tear or bite and in return for your effort you come away underwhelmed, disgusted, and stained too deep to wash. The consumption of a pomegranate is a violent act of defilement, for both the fruit and the eater.
But that is because most do not understand how to open a pomegranate. They have little patience for the precise carving. They see no point in coreing the fruit gently, no reason to be reverent as they pull the quarters apart. When done correctly, opening a pomegranate leaves little mess. Your fingers will still stain, your knife will still slick, but there will be no pool of crimson drowning both you and the fruit.
The seeds are only sweet to those who understand the merit of a light hand and intricate slicing. Why put in so much effort for a food so bitter and clearly armored against consumption? Surely it must not yearn to be eaten.
(^insane about silly catholic dogs)

Married? You can't talk to him or realize he had a reason for doing something without telling him to never show you his face again. What kind of marriage would that be? Every fight is just Jack kicking Joke out and Joke breaking down before pulling himself together and having to win him back? Again and again?
Everything is always on Joke's shoulders, the blame and the actions and everything and each time he opens up a bit more, each time he tries to dream a new dream, he is punished for it because to get that he had to do something and he's incapable of making the choices Jack wants him to make.
Joke is just as self-sacrificing as Jack, it's just that he does it differently and that hurts them both so much. Because Joke throws himself on a knife because he doesn't think he's worth loving, because he doesn't think he's worth anything. He'll forgive anyone and everyone because he desperately wants to be forgiven himself and doesn't think he can be.
Jack suggests marriage and Joke admits he's never thought about it and they adopt Toi Ting and love her and love each other but Joke still can't be forgiven, Joke still can't be listened to, Joke still doesn't get a word in even though he's the one who labeled his own betrayal.
I am just a little disappointed that Joke is doing the work again. That Joke has to always, always, always be the one to do the work. Jack will do work with Boss, yeah, sure, but Joke is the one who, again and again, takes on all the emotional labor in their relationship. Jack loves him but Jack has never had to work to love him or work for his love. Because Joke will always forgive him. Joke will always love him. But Joke?Joke always has to work for everything, for every ounce of love, for every moment they have, for everything... Joke's always working.
Jack is doing a lot but what he's not doing is having good character development in his relationship with Joke and that's a problem because Joke is having good character development in his relationships.
(I really do love this show and both boys but that doesn't mean I don't get frustrated sometimes. Don't get my started on The One Ring which grants Magic Plot Armor that doesn't make any sense because it is literally Just A Ring?!!?! What!??!)

I love this scene so much, ruby really did NOT hesitate in immediately taking that missile down. she really said oh you can TRY to hurt my partner just watch this.
like i love her expression in this, the way this goes from being just annoyed or upset; this girl is genuinely pissed with cordovin, because for one, she's being completely unreasonable about this matter, and secondly, i mean, she tried to shoot at weiss and maria.
(also ruby appreciation here; this girl sniped a moving missile out of the air like????)
and because i am whiterose trash, here is bonus ruby and weiss after weiss safely gets off the ship and is on ground with ruby.

look at this dork i love her sm. the second she's reunited with weiss and knows that weiss is safe; look at that smile.
(also pls don't mind weiss's expression)

aventurine with a reader who is his handler. your primary job? risk analysis. you were an intelligentsia guild member-- once, before your talent for mental statistical computations were fully discovered. being quietly brilliant was much easier than being loudly so. where you could once toil away on private research on the ipc's dime, you now trail behind aventurine, attempting to mitigate all the damage that ripples around him.
(this is particularly difficult as aventurine is a man cursed with luck so good that it's a statistical anomaly. prediction is useless. calculations must be made on the fly and you must pray you are accurate, lest the strategic investment department end up in some amount of personal of fiscal debt themselves.)
Tumblr media
aventurine had assured you initially that you didn't need to keep such a close eye on him. and at first, you'd believed him. he is one of the ten stonehearts, and well-regarded despite the rumors and brand on his neck. it's-- it's not your business anyway. to pry. you trust him.
and truthfully, he does keep a good handle on himself. he gets out of all of his gambles in one-- piece. sort of. he either skirts disaster with no room to spare or he takes on the disaster with his own two hands and grit and fucking wins.
and truthfully, if that was the only thing you had to analyze about aventurine, your job would be quite easy. he's lucky. he wins.
however-- there's just so much more to it than that. factors and variables that aren't affected by aventurine's uniquely good fortune. there always is. but what is and what isn't is hard to suss out. it-- it all constantly changes and hence you have to be in aventurine's shadow and hope that your mind is fast enough to deduce and calculate at the speed that aventurine cuts typical odds down to aventurine odds.
which is to say, that exhaustion follows in your shadow.
aventurine isn't a horrible boss. as much as you're his handler, he's yours. there's a semi-silent, mutual duty you both carry. aventurine makes sure you stay in his shadow, just out of sight and out of danger (so, he can position himself in front of any bullets, stray or otherwise. because they will never hit him.) and you make sure that he does not inadvertently cause a firestorm half a galaxy away.
it works. it's tenuous, most of the time. because aventurine thinks getting close to you is his greatest gamble (one cannot use luck to mend a broken heart). and because you recognize that, for all of your risk analysis and statistical understanding of the universe at large, at some point, you will be in aventurine's wake at the wrong time. and your luck, in conjunction to his endless luck, will run out.
it's a statistical inevitability.

one of my favorite things about pride and prejudice is that in the last third of the book Elizabeth’s internal monologue about Darcy is her admitting that she’s in love with him but also putting all sorts of qualifications around that statement that kind of ...tamp down the level of emotion (the “feelings, if not as tender as Jane’s for Bingley, at least as just” line, even the whole thing about her and Darcy being well-matched objectively speaking) and as soon as she’s engaged you get the unbridled joy in the narrative about her own joy, cc: “I am happier even than Jane; she only smiles, I laugh.”
