I think a lot about how common it is for Raph to be the one to have direct focus put on him when Leo gets into all his near death experiences.

Like, when Leo is thrown off a building, it’s Raph who’s right there jumping after him, not even thinking about the consequences to himself when he does. When Leo almost gets skewered by the Krang, Raph’s right there to take the blow and send Leo to safety without a second thought. When Leo’s being strangled to near death, it’s a Krangified Raph doing the job, doing exactly what Raph would never, ever want to do. When Leo is telling Casey Jr to close the portal, it’s Raph who tries desperately to convince Leo otherwise.

Likewise, Leo is consistently very single minded when Raph gets forcibly separated from them. Both when in the sewers and by the Krang, Leo is dead set on finding Raph first and foremost.

I also think it’s interesting that during each of Leo’s near death experiences, the lightheartedness of his words during them goes directly hand in hand with both how close Raph is to him physically and how much danger Raph is also in in that moment. From a literal “I told you so” as Leo’s falling away from Raph to a soft joke about how “hero moves” are Raph’s style - both of these are on the more morbidly carefree side and both of these notably take Leo farther away from Raph and, in turn, have Raph not in immediate danger.

On the other side of things is the apology from Leo, heedless of the danger he himself is in as he seriously and genuinely speaks to a Krangified Raph face to face. Then there’s Leo’s freezing and desperation as Raph takes a hit meant for him and sends just Leo to safety, leaving Raph himself behind. Both of these involve much closer proximity and Raph being directly harmed - these together make Leo much more vulnerable in his words and actions, something not even the threat of death can make him.

These two care about each other so much, and they’re way too much alike for their own good.

I totally love how the movie parallels Oroku Saki and Karai with Raph and Leo respectively #there are so many parallels in general in this show+movie it makes me froth at the mouth #and because it breaks my heart - the beginning of the movie had Raph getting angry at Leo and lashing out at him #the end of the movie has the Krang very very angry at Leo and lashing out at him #both of these times has Leo ‘ruining’ a mission so…bad parallels #in the movie as well there’s a Krangified Raph who beats Leo senseless #so I have to wonder if Raph and Leo just…can’t roughhouse anymore #else Leo would flinch or Raph would be so scared to accidentally hurt Leo like he was already used to do before #then suddenly their usual dynamic of Raph never having to be softer with Leo is thrown on its head #worse is if they’re so terrified of this dynamic leaving that they power through their own sufferings to maintain it

me before watching Drop Dead Fred: aw this is gonna be a really silly dumb kinda movie and it'll cheer me up :3c me after watching Drop Dead Fred:

#talk about a film which hits you right in the trauma jesus CHRIST #i thought it was gonna be toilet humour and slapstick for 90 minutes not an exploration on the effects of childhood abuse!!!!!! 😭😭😭#not to get too personal on main but when you're raised in that kind of abusive controlling environment where your behaviour is scrutinised #you do want to give in and act out and conceptualise that there's somewhere there who cares about you and could save you #i have no idea why this movie received such bad reviews...to me it seems like a really cutting look at a hard topic #and both Phoebe Cates and Rik Mayall were fantastic #ohhhh man. my heart hurts. love it so much #could i call this a 'comfort movie' if it's eating away at my insides??? i don't know 😭😭😭#drop dead fred #phoebe cates #rik mayall #tw: trauma #starleskatalks

rewatched arrival for the hundredth time. this movie never fails to gut punch me with its approach to determinism. louise embracing her future that she knows every moment of, despite the tremendous loss and pain it contains, with open arms. she doesn't hesitate, or ruminate on how she can try and change it. she accepts it all, the good and the bad, because what she gains is worth it, so many times over for her. she steels herself against a certain future and runs forward to meet it all, to love, learn, and lose, and trusts and leans on herself to live through it all. because that's what life is; it's the joy and the suffering. to try and isolate the joy alone is madness, futility in its purest definition.

comparing her line of thinking to a palindrome (how she named her daughter, hannah), the movie kept emphasizing, "it's the same backwards as it is forwards." it doesn't matter if you can see the end; life is the same whether you live it "forwards" (without knowledge of the future) or "backwards" (with foresight). it doesn't change the significance of your life experiences; to try and avoid certain future pain just because you have the knowledge of it is a zero sum game. you think you win because you avoided pain, but you also avoided the joy that preceded it. the metamorphosis. so you still lose if you try to win, and vice-versa.

all you can do is rush forward and take it all head-on. see this whole beautiful mess as your one most precious gift; this one life, this one chance, a laughably miniature blip on the colossus that is linear time, to experience all there is to feel before you return back to an eternity without perception. it's all worth it, because only in living a full-fledged life open to everything it has to offer does the experience of living turn out to be greater than the sum of its parts; it's in trying to beat the system (avoid pain) that we actually lose.

#arrival 2016 #pleaaaaase this movie has a chokehold on me #the perfect sci-fi imo is one that blends the scientific and the emotional realms seamlessly and wow does this do that #this particular movie speaks so personally to me #because i lived so much of my life in stagnation trying to avoid pain i could see on the horizon #a couple of years ago when beginning my last relationship i could see the end as early as 3 months in #you know when you just realize early on there are cracks in the relationship foundation that are not repairable and will only get stressed #the more you build on top of it? yeah #it terrified me like you couldn't believe and i spent so much time in denial and fighting against it #fighting against this future i was intuitively certain would materialize #i watched this movie around that time and decided to just go for it #to not let my intuition rob me of joy in the present #as someone who lived so prudently and always tried to make the “right” choice this was monumental for me and so out of character #for a while i wished i'd just listened to my instincts about how this person would ultimately hurt me so i could avoid the suffering #because i really did have foresight everything i was scared would happen did happen almost to the letter #and i wondered does that make me stupid?#that i marched forward anyway? i didn't have the degree of certainty louise did so i thought i could change things #if i loved hard enough if i was patient enough if i did what i knew in my heart to be the right thing #but it changed nothing #but no i wasn't stupid and i would do it again #because it was still a beautiful experience at its best and it taught me valuable lessons at its worst #i have undoubtedly changed as a person i will never be the same again and THAT is living #not rotting away in an unchanging state. unchanged by joy or mundanity or by adversity. that is not living #undoubtedly better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all. i never rly agreed with that until i saw this movie #personal #favourite movies #scifi #movies #this applies to everything not just love. take that chance! do the thing that scares you. bc that's the only way to really live #regardless out of the outcome

ooh!! well, i havent listened to a lot of TOP in a while, so i don't have many recommendations there unfortunately :'] but for other slow, soft songs, let's see... i'll put them under a cut with all my explanations, but ☀️ "See The Day" by The Altogether (Volition song!), 🍃 "Rounds" by The Oh Hellos (Shivers song!), 🦋 "Would You Be So Kind" by dodie (general skills song, Suggestion primarily!) are the best contenders!

Pretty sure you've seen it already, but from a different ask, i recommend "Almost (Sweet Music)" by Hozier! (and "Like Real People Do" if you want to cry and yearn with me, though my DE ideas for it are very loose hkjhg) these are slow ones i like hkjhg <3

🦋 "Would You Be So Kind?" by dodie BUT SPECIFICALLY THIS VERSION, because i love everyone's crowded but earnest vibes. this one is led by Suggestion ("oooh you wanna fall in love with us so bad right? right???") and makes me grin, you GOTTA imagine all of the skills squished together in the front of Harry's brain all trying different tactics to get Kim to fall in love with them, (rhetoric: "I HAVE A QUESTION..." ency: "let's write a story! be in my book!") at 2:35, after all the skills singing together loudly, it's just Harry himself singing to Kim, with all the skills slowly backing him up. the ending is all of them fucking ECSTATIC celebrating when harry finally kisses kim hkjhg jesus this'd be so cute hold on i have to go plan this out i have so many thoughts hkjdh

my hot take about descendants is that NONE of the core four were ready for a relationship until maybe like, the third movie (rant in tags)

#they were still adjusting to living life without struggling to survive #a girl should not be jumping into a relationship the same week she just tried her first piece of non-rotten food lol #thats not to say I don't like the canon ships #but mal married literally the FIRST man she met in auradon. at 18.#and even as far as in descendants 2 we see them still struggling to adjust in different ways (mainly mal)#in d3 they seem to have fully assimilated into life in Auradon (as much as a VK can anyway)#so it makes sense for them to THEN seek out relationships if that's what they want.#but disney ofc wanted to act like romantic love just automatically fixes a person's problems ig?? as if a relationship wouldn't just be #added stress given the position the VKs were in in d1 #not to mention dating just like. wasnt a thing on the isle (mal even says this)#and I get that the kids are craving to be loved because their parents didn't gaf about them. But I wish the first movie focused more on the #finding that love in each other than romantically with outside people. a sort of “they had love in them all along” moment.#and then this fandom loves to argue about whether Jarlos/Janelos was 'rushed'. at least Carlos (and Jay +lonnie) waited a few months before #throwing themselves into the dating scene. Poor evie had her heart broken within like 3 days of being in Auradon. no wonder she was willing #to help steal the wand lol.#Anyway to wrap up this rant I didn't even mean to go on #I just think that kids who have spent the first 14-16 years of their lives fighting to survive and being put through continuous trauma on a #daily basis don't need dating right away. they need THERAPY.#if anyone here has seen stranger things its kinda an El and Mike situation were its like. the girl grew up in a lab and fell for the first #boy in regular society who was kinda nice to her lol. thats how I view Mal and Ben #same with doug and evie. he was nicer than chad but he still fell for her for her looks and she still fell for him because he was the first #guy in auradon to be genuinely interested in her. also evie had a whole “I dont need a prince” arc and ended up with a man anyway?#my problem with janelos was always that Carlos never quite worked out his mommy issues or his anxiety. I feel like he'd be afraid of hurtin #her even though that boy wouldn't hurt a fly. and we see Jane get pretty stressed out herself- have you ever been in a relationship where #both of you have anxiety? cause it either goes really well (you help keep each other calm) or REALLY terribly (you make each other spiral)#I actually really liked Lonnie and Jay (though I feel like it would've had a bigger payoff if she was in d3. not sure why she wasn't but I #wont dunk on that because it couldve been smth to do with her actress). I think Lonnie is someone who can 'handle' Jay well and match his #energy. And I like the idea of Jay finding someone he's loyal to after being commitment-phobic for 1 1/2 movies and the whole first book lo #and ofc I have to throw this in here: any auradon kid the VKs get with is never going to grasp even half of what they went through.#this doesnt mean they can't try to understand and be empathetic. but it will always cast a shadow on VK/AK relationships.
