there are so much interesting thematical similarities between characters of one family/clan in mdzs.

Like the Nies (the only two characters we know of) are ruthless and they all are bound by the undying desire of revenge. Nie Mingjue waited for God knows how long to take down When Rouhan and later even overcame death to get to Jin Guangyao. Nie Huaisang waited for a whole decade to find his brother's corpse and made a very complicated plot to avenge him. They both weren't afraid to get their hands dirty to get what they want. NMJ killed countless of Wen soldiers, and NHS is responsible for MXY's death, all the deaths in Mo Village, probably for Qin Su's death (tho indirectly). And that's just what I can remember. Anyway, they're shared theme is rage (be it quiet or explosive) and revenge.

The Lans, I think, have this shared passion and undying loyalty. LWJ is pretty obvious. Despite how much everyone hated WWX, despite his clan and family being against him, LWJ never stopped believing in WWX. He even went against his teacher/parental figure/uncle to protect his love. That's the dedication right there. And even when WWX got resurrected (thx NHS) LWJ was prepared to die in the Burial ground (if I didn't mess up the location) with WWX. And he isn't the only one in his family/clan.

Like father like son, Lan papa went against all that he knew to protect the woman he loved so much. Even if it meant he had to spend all his life in seclusion, probably never seeing his sons and the outside world, he was prepared to sacrifice everything for Madame Lan.

LCX was also ready to put his everything on the line for JGY. He was constantly supporting JGY, protecting him from harm (mostly from NMJ), and still giving him a benefit of the doubt after all the crazy stuff was revealed. LXC actually makes me terribly sad, because he was PREPARED TO DIE WITH JGY. HE WAS PREPARED TO USE QI DEVIATING MUSIC ON HIMSELF TO PROVE JGY'S INNOCENCE/FIND OUT TRUTH. WHY MUST HE BE USED SO MUCH BY THE PEOPLE HE CARES THE MOST? (Sorry, I'm still heartbroken) Anyways, he isn't an exception to the rule. But he certainly is the most heartbreaking one for sure.

Even Su She, who was only a student in the clan and isn't connected to the family, he was very loyal to JGY, putting his own life on the line multiple times and getting his hands dirty with no questions asked. Su She wasn't the most brave one when he was young, but his devotion literally made him go against the most powerful fierce corpse. No matter how much he wanted to distance himself from Lan clan, he can't escape the loyalty curse of Gusu™.

The trickiest one is Lan Qiren, cuz he doesn't really show very much affection towards anyone/anything. But I feel like his devotion lies with his family or the rules. Despite being super strict, he tries to get LWJ return to Cloud Recesses to protect him from other clans. (The funniest part is that "lets go back to Gusu" never works). Also LQR's and LXC's little interaction in the conference about Wens in donghua made me smile sm, it was so sweet. The funniest part is that he's always whiny, but will cave in for his loved ones. I literally have no proof of him being loyal to his family, but MXTX's own words in an artbook I believe??

I am not really sure about Yunmeng Jiang or Lanling Jin clans, cuz they don't really have so obvious similarities. Lanling Jin's similarity is being connected to JGS, which is not so unique in mdzs. And Yunmeng Jiang is probably having family issues.

LJGY did not murder JRS.

Firstly, we must look at the list of people he takes blame for the deaths of— “[I murdered] my father, my brother, my wife, my son, my teacher, my friend”

Father, wife, and son are pretty straightfoward— JGS, QS, JRS. (QS, who commited suicide in public.)

But what about brother, teacher, and friend?

Brother can either refer to NMJ or JZX. Teacher can refer to WRH or to NMJ, and friend can refer to NMJ, SMS, or XY.

Either of the combinations, there is always someone he didn't kill directly or at all— JZX, I'm fairly certain he miscalculated, and really did not mean to kill him. It would be a weird possibility that WWX would kill JZX, his shijie's husband, or that WN would kill him out of WWX's orders. Furthermore, JGY's position was precarious asf and he would not inherit.

SMS died protecting him, but was certainly not killed directly. As for Xue Yang, it's the greatest stretch.

The thing is, unlike JGS, JGY feels bad about the things he does to some degree. He blames himself—

For SMS, for him being there and dying protecting him. For XY, for ordering his execution, and/or for him dying under his payroll after he survived it and they reconnected. For JZX, for sending him there with the intent of causing trouble.

This was, mind you, after LXC stabbed him— He was no longer trying to look like the victim, but shouldering every accusation thrown his way. He hadn't had time to process SMS's death, nor to process LXC stabbing him, nor to process NHS tricking him into doing it. So he just... Takes the blame, which I'm fairly certain he does because he blames himself in the first place.

The confession should not be taken at face value, because of the amount of stress he is in, because of everything I said above, and also because he had been under the influence of the Yin Tiger Tally just some minutes ago.

Now, onto JRS— It is said that "One of the opposing sect leaders lost the arguments [about the watchtowers], and went into a murderous rage, killing Jin Guangyao and Qin Su’s only son. The boy had always been a good child and the couple had loved him dearly. Under resentment, Jin Guangyao tore down the entire sect in revenge."

By the way it's worded, and by the fact no one blamed JGY for the massacre, (if I recall correctly, his position was still a little precarious by then) it's safe to assume that it happened in public, likely during a conference, not the corpse found later. As for the He sect, we get no real evidence that it was the sect he tore down for murdering JRS.

Furthermore, if I recall correctly, most of the accusations were coming for sect leader Yao, which, well. When he tells QS that the boy had to die, it can be interpreted as not being an admission, but rather an attemp at damage control. It the boy had to die even if he wasn't murdered, not I murdered him.

I'm not saying he didn't have complicated feelings about JRS, I'm not even saying he didn't think about killing him, but like. The evidence he did kill him comes from rumors from sect leader Yao and from QS's grief and anger riddled expeculations

hey!! absolutely, i would be stoked to recommend some of my favourite xiyao fics for you:

last of our kind, by shiome - a post-canon AU in which lxc chooses to take jgy to dongying after the events of guanyin temple—but jgy, struggling to recover from the injuries he sustained in the temple, has lost all of his memories of himself past the age of about 17. there’s plenty of cool dongying world-building in this “case fic,” and it’s one of my favourites. (i usually dislike fic where jgy after the sunshot campaign is referred to as meng yao, but this one is a clear exception to that rule!)

hurt/comfort variations on a poison theme, by welcome_equivocator - set during jgy’s time as chief cultivator. jgy survives an assassination attempt and says some things while delirious that lxc can’t forget he’s heard. the main story in this series is how will the morning find us? but the sequels (including one by roquen) are excellent.

it’s worth it every time, by roquen - this series includes what is legit my favourite xiyao fic of all time, the weakness of falling in love. it a canon-divergent AU based on the premise of what would happen if jgy didn’t marry qin su, and hews extremely close to canon. lots of 3zun dynamics at play here as well as an exceptionally well-developed fantastic friendship between jgy and nhs. this series also includes the only fic that has ever made me feel any real sympathy for nmj, which is a big deal for me since i struggle to enjoy nmj as a character 95% of the time. and it’s killing me but maybe that’s fine is the remaining 5%.

remains, by welcome_equivocator - just a sad post-canon rumination on what happens if lxc runs back into the collapsing guanyin temple to be with jgy as he dies. because sometimes we need to lean into the tragic catharsis of this ship.

a painting missing strokes, a song missing notes, by occasional_boy_reporter - another post-canon AU wherein jgy, lxc, and su minshan (!!!) are trying to escape to dongying, tho lxc is initially brought along as an unwilling pseudo-hostage. starts out a bit slow, since the fic creates an alternate circumstance for jgy and sms to both survive nmj’s attack in the temple, but it really does pick up steam. it’s also told from lxc’s perspective for the most part (and includes some one sided unrequited suyao, but xiyao is absolutely endgame). alas it isn’t finished yet, but i hope that the author intends to return to it.

The person died from how hot the metal was, and from the acid. Nikola rolled his eyes, he removed the metal plates from its body, and told Marie to pour the rest of the acid on the subject's body. The body melted, and nothing but a pool of blood was left.

I did pull for Ayato, because firstly, when there was his 1st banner, I lost 50/50 to Diluc ((well, I kinda like him, so it was okay), me and my sibling were joking that it was Ajax, who turned wish/fate to another direction from Ayato, 'cause "There can be only one hydro husband"🤣🤣🤣) Secondly, I like his character design and I like him as character(like personality etc.) and thirdly, (maybe it's the main reason?) because of his Chinese VA (Zhao Lu, I love his voice sooo much!) Oh, and he was guaranteed! Then I tried weapon banner (I never pull there because it's literally some sort of scam) but I tried, and got Amos bow, which I already have😅 so weapon banner IS A SCAM! I'm always happy to get fic asks, and of course I'll chat this question through, but I should disclaim that I'm not a writer, either by inclination or training. I like to read, and give my opinions on what I read, but I'm much better and more comfortable reacting to what I've been given than generating any new content or ideas myself. So while I'm more than happy to guide you through these questions, I'd also suggest reaching out to other fic writers, and looking through tips and suggestions geared towards writers as well. And maybe something will come to you in the middle of it, too! Feedback from friends and discussion on what you've already done is another great way to spark ideas!

Okay! so cql characterizations with qs instead of mxy. I really like this idea, how exciting! qs is such an underdeveloped character and this is an opportunity to explore her and get her some justice. And yess THE DOUBLE MENTIONED!!! I've just hit episode 28....big things happening in the jiang household.

I've actually read something with this concept before, but it was....not executed so well. I don't know much about writing advice, but I can tell you what I thought didn't work for that one. The writer was bizarrely fixated on qs's 'soft' body and breasts...just breasting boobily all over the place leaking milk it was SO weird 😭The obsession with her body felt extremely creepy and misogynistic and bioessentialist and also just, besides the point!

Obviously the body that wwx comes back in is important, but it's not the single defining feature of his new life and it won't determine his identity, he might have some feelings about it either way, but it's HIS, and he can now do as he pleases with it. And he knows it used to belong to someone else who had a whole life and motivations and fears and griefs too, and I love it when he respects that and honors that, much like xff does for jl.

The double, much like cql, is very much about reputation, and if wwx comes back in qs's body and needs to remain undercover, he might care about maintaining her reputation as part of his caretaking of her body and her legacy, or he might not. Those are themes you could pay with!

I also like fics that have wwx look at his new body and see the marks on it and think about what mxy went through and what kind of life he might have lived...old scars, aches in his joints, a crooked finger, internal likes and dislikes that don't align with wwx's own...they tell you something about mxy/qs without them being in the picture any longer. It's a really neat character building device!

I'd say this could run into some very sensitive territory very quickly, so if you aren't trans I'd suggest looking into how to respectfully and authentically write trans men, and/or find a sensitivity reader. Tho this wwx isn't...exactly? trans, it's something I think is worth thinking about anyway. (Unless he was trans in his first life of course!)

so let's focus on this part - the great thing about wwx is that he contains absolute multitudes. the wwx in mxy's body came back, figured out his personality, and immediately started playing it up, and it worked with his personality bc he IS a silly prankster, but he's also an extremely intelligent and socially intuitive survivalist capable of being quiet and understated. if he had to act like qs for a BRIEF amount of time in order to figure out the situation and get out, he probably could. though the conduct training he'd received as a young master wouldn't be the same qs would have received, he could probably figure it out, think quick, observe, etc.

moving on to our next question!

how to involve lan wangji without making it obvious that they're close with jgy in the picture

the thing is though, wwx really couldn't be himself and stay in disguise or very long. the big joke in cql is that wwx came back as 'mxy' then immediately dressed in his classic colors, starting hanging off lwj's arm, acting confident and charming, knowing a suspicious amount of the ghostly path, PLAYING THE FLUTE...which is why someone clever like jgy would immediately realize that 'his wife' is actually the yllz come back.

I personally don't think it would be as satisfying to keep it a secret for very long because wwx is always at his best when he's unencumbered, and because hiding doesn't really suit him anyway, but for an AU where wwx MUST be at koi tower, or MUST maintain that facade...hmm...honestly I think having jgy recognize it's wwx almost immediately would make more sense anyway. and then it's jgy's word against wwx's acting skills which would also be kind of wild...OR then maybe there's a reason he can't say anything to reveal it? maybe wwx finds the letter qs's mom's maid sent and holds it over him, and then lwj is there to back him up should jgy threaten wwx, so jgy has to rely on tricks.

basically I don't think there's any way jgy wouldn't realize the truth, even without lwj around. he's too clever, and wwx doesn't know qs at all, and the circumstances around the sacrifice summons are so violent and bloody as to be hard to conceal. presumably qs does it while jgy is traveling? that would give wwx some time to gather himself, figure out the lay of the land, meet the maids, etc...then jgy comes back, and maybe wwx fools him? ah, but even if lwj comes, then only having wwx and lwj talk as qs and lwj in jgy's presence wouldn't be very fun! either qs or jgy has to leave if the facade is to be maintained! and even then jgy would be suspicious!

maybe 'qs' could insist on lwj coming in as like, an impartial observer for whatever 'she' claims is happening? and then 'qs' could travel with lwj on their investigations for the wangxian and lwj could rely on his reputation as a peerless untouched jade etc. etc. and 'qs' could bring 'her' maids along to 'chaperone' but then they'd be in on it so wangxian could continue unimpeded? or impeded! up to you hehe! but the maids knowing might be helpful to get in jgy's way

unfortunately I'm not so good at idea either I'm sorry 😭 but I'd definitely suggest looking to canon - the suspicious music cultivation, nmj's death, the theft of the musical scores from the lan secret library - in wwx's investigation. if you follow canon wwx's thought processes, it'll be more in-character too! ALSO if you're inspired by the double, lean into that! it's a marvelously intelligent show, and xff is a brilliant social strategist, and in this AU you can absolutely have wwx act like xff in her investigations as well! wish i could be of more help....

Well I may not be a writer but I really do admire and appreciate the courage and vision of all the creatives in this world. Whether or not your fic makes it, I hope you have a great time planning it out and crafting it! I hope some of these ideas helped or inspired you, and I cannot recommend enough getting a friend who also likes the show to sit down and read through what you've got, to provide feedback and suggestions, and for you to bounce ideas off of. Based on what my friend says, it's part of what's making their fic happen. Like I said, I'm happy to offer my ideas on these one-offs, but it's probably more helpful when it's someone who knows you, and who knows your writing style and tastes and preferences :) even the ao3 reddit might have helpful ideas if you ask!

In conclusion, I'd say

do research and be proactive in depicting wwx in qs's body respectfully. it's an exciting idea, and I love trans wwx, and it'll be cool to see more of these works out there if it happens

look for ideas from multiple sources, including writing blogs, other fic writers, canon, and other media you're drawing inspiration from

remember that wwx is capable of self-control BUT isn't really much of an actor longterm (outside of his masking bc of trauma reasons)

jgy is VERY perceptive, but wwx is very socially intelligent as well

your best bet for jgy not knowing is literally having them in physical proximity as little as possible. maybe qs needs to take a road trip to gusu. for her health.

maids and servants are invaluable sources of support and insight! qs's maids will be wwx's best allies, against jgy (and maybe for wangxian hehe)

that if you want jgy to know about it and to stay quiet you'll need wwx to be able to blackmail him or control him somehow

social pressures and conventions definitely matter to the su family, so they'll need a story for appearances, but won't really matter to lwj, so if you want a dramatic reveal of wwx being a heretical liar who 'stole the body of an innocent woman' lwj will be RIGHT there with him. romance <3

wwx is concerned for lwj's reputation but not his own

wwx MIGHT be concerned for qs's reputation, but might not be

wwx hasn't been able to smile politely and act nice to his open enemies for a very long time, but he's also very flexible

I was thinking about this earlier after I finished my rewatch of The Untamed, and I actually get a bit mad when people say that women in mxtx's works aren't well developed, or something in this sense. I'll be using The Untamed to try and explain my point.

[SPOILERS FOR THE UNTAMED]

In The Untamed, even the women aren't on the screen as much as men, and die at some point (referring mostly to wei qing and jiang yanli), they are actually really important to the story, I would dare to say they are so important that the story wouldn't work without them. And even thought they aren't not that physically strong, I think people often underestimate their strenght. Their strength isn't on their cultive, but in their hearts and in the way they care. Their strongest features are that they gentle and can empathize with others better than any other character.

Starting with Wen Qing, she is the best doctor in the Wen sect, and since she is the only doctor we get to see, I'd dare to say the best doctor in this universe (my girl did a core transfer in a mountain when no one had done that before). Without her, we probably wouldn't have the Yilling Patriarch or Wei Wuxian as a demonic cultivator. Without her, JC would probably not have a core and wouldn't be a sect leader — hell, he probably wouldn't even be alive since his golden core was his life. And I'd say that even in death she was in control. MXTX didn't gave her a death where death happened to her (like for example, Qin Su, poor girl), Wen Qing took the decision to handle herself (and her brother, the one person she loves the most in the world) over, when she could've use WWX as a shield and just let him continue to take on all the fire. In a way, she died in a more courageous way than any of the other characters (with the exception of Yanli, which I'll be talking about shortly); I can't think about a single men that died like her — sacrificing for the good of others, when they could have another way out.

Now onto Jiang Yanli, which I'll be referring in her both as Yanli and shijie. Without Yanli there wouldn't be the two pride of Yunmeng, is clear that she is what brings JC and WWX together. Without her, is debatable that we would have the Nightless City arc. Without her WWX wouldn't end up being framed of killing Jin Zixuan, in fact I don't even think he would've been killed. And without JZ is hard to tell if the sects would act against WWX (I mean the Jin's wanted that Iron, but the sects were pretty receptive at welcoming WWX since he hadn't kill anyone for a year). So without Jiang Yanli, a lot of The Untamed's plot wouldn't be able to happen — at least not in that particular way.

Jiang Yanli's strengths rely on her gentleness and care for others. She isn't a strong cultivator like her mother, but is through her loveable way that she can affect others around, and that sometimes is better than being physically strong (just look at the way some of the characters went on loyal mode just because they were treated like humans, like su she, wen zhuliu and even jgy). And like Wen Qing, shijie's death didn't just happened to her. She choose to protect her little brother and sacrifice herself. We can debate that she was going to die anyway, but we can never be sure of that. Yanli, like WQ, had a courageous death. And her dying doesn't mean she is gone, even a decade later of her death, she still has a big impact on WWX's world.

Maybe I'm speaking nonsense and trying to find meaning in these characters deaths and lives, but I feel strongly that they were one of the pillars for the plot and for me it didn't feel that they were only used as plot device to further WWX's character. They were well rounded characters that showed that physical strengths isn't everything, and in the end them, the wen-dog (gosh I hate this sm) and the physically weak Jiang had the most noble and brave deaths.

I know many people have already spoken about this, but it always kind of annoys me when people will point to mdzs and say mxtx can't write women well or she hates them or some such thing. While there is always room for criticism and improvement, sweeping statements of this sort do not do mxtx Or the women in mdzs justice.

It really does feel like people just want the same sort of cookie cutter woke rep in all of their media to appease their consciences. When the women aren't easily categorised into girlboss, stoic strongwoman and problem solvers, theyre not only usually mischaracterised but also sort of cast away as not important enough, which really gets to me.

Could she have added more women to the story without changing much, probably. Would it have made it a better or more coherent story, debatable. Does she have strong women characters? Yes! Could they have been given more page time without taking away from the main story, again super debatable.

At the end of the day, it all boils down to, mxtx wrote four memorable, strong, differentiated women in a book about a gay romance. There were many more women tangential to the plot, but four had distinct characterisation and roles that heavily impacted the trajectory of the story. This is already more fleshed out women than i've seen in some hetero romances.

I find it an incredible disservice to the characters of luo qingyang, wen qing, jiang yanli and a-qing to write them off as only existing to move forward the plot. They do so, in the same sense that any bit of a book should move forward the narrative, but each one of them have clear motivations, complex emotions, inner lives and diverse personalities that have nothing to with the protags.

This post really isn't going anywhere. It's just a ramble to say that though the women in mdzs may not be on the page for as long as some of the men, but they sure do pack a punch when they are and I treasure each moment more so for their significance.
