what is it about sakura that makes her just so… shippable?

There are a few answers to this question. I suspect you may not like most of them, so I’m putting this under a read more. But you did ask, so here it is.

Rather than answer this with some sqeeing agreement over our flawless shippable queen being just That Hot, I'm going to try to answer this seriously. This is your second warning that what I'm about to say may not be warm and fuzzy to read.

Prefacing that Sakura is a character I have deeply loved and appreciated for many years, but it is exactly my love for her that makes me critical of her and the way I've seen her portrayed and, in some ways, mismanaged by fanfic authors over the years. Take all this with a grain of salt. These are just my own observations and opinions. I'm not here to ruin your faves, shame you in any way, or make you feel bad.

1. She’s got very self-insert protagonist-chan vibes that allow all types of people (us) to project onto her. This is admittedly an uncharitable answer (and, fwiw) not really in line with canon. Because in canon she actually does have some unique personality and she definitely does have some glaring character flaws that make her more closely resemble a real person. Kishi doesn't go very far with this, but it is absolutely there. So we're not working with cardboard here.

But unfortunately, so many fanfics erase a lot of that about her, or borrow parts of other characters/the idealized girlfriend experience and superimpose them onto Sakura as a catch all to make her "cooler" or "more interesting" to suit whatever they are trying to accomplish with her. I'm talking about how Sakura is portrayed as some combination of all or some of the following: a gorgeous, insanely empathetic woman who also has a temper (but only in the Strong Female Character way, not a true-to-life feminine rage way that addresses and unpacks her canon deep insecurities and demonstrated emotional insensitivity toward others, because that would be unattractive), is able to see past her love interest's issues and secrets and "understand" them perfectly (often without any real substantive work put into exploring how or why this makes sense in the context of the story), is both therapist and powerhouse in all that she does, is possessed of unparalleled kindness but also """"she's so sassy!""" type of shit. She's full of so many contradictions yet somehow the perfect, ideal girlfriend that my head spins. Who is she anymore? I don't know this person. That’s the protagonist-chan shit I’m talking about (see also, relatedly: Mary Sue, but I think that only captures one dimension of the problem). I think we’ve all seen those fics. There are a lot of them, and they are egregious or not to varying degrees. It’s boring as hell.

2. For some reason (no, I know the reason and I’ll get to it in a sec), people tend to like only Sakura and not care about maining any other female characters. Like the number of people I have encountered over the years in this fandom who outright (and, bizarrely, quite proudly) proclaim that they only read Sakura fics and will not entertain any other female main is…well, it makes me sad for them. Not that you can’t main your faves, but to wear it as a badge of honor feels red flag-y to me. What is it about the other ladies that offends you so? Have you questioned what it is about those other female characters that puts you off without giving them a shot? (I have some possible answers to these questions below.)

Anyway, we know why. The generous reason is that she is simply the main character of canon and has the most screen time, so it’s understandable that she’d have more fans than the other girls with comparatively less screen time. Nothing wrong with that on its face. It just makes sense.

However, my cynically in-this-fandom-for-15+-years ass also knows that, to a certain degree, this aversion to other female characters who are not Sakura is related to #1 above. She’s protagonist-chan, an easy personality to obliviate and make vanilla/ideal in a way that is simultaneously reductive and inoffensive, and that makes her approachable. Safe. An aspirational "that could be me." Characters like Ino, Karin, Mei, Tsunade, etc. don’t flatten as easily. They have more polarizing personality traits you can't squirm your way out of like you can with Sakura (I say you can with Sakura only because people do it, not because it can actually be done well or in any way that is satisfying to me personally). Those polarizing personalities put a lot of people off. It’s not unique to Naruto, it’s just the way people tend to write and consume stories in general. That’s why we get the “sassy best friend” trope and "women be catty". Sassy BFF is generally a more interesting character because she is allowed to be a chaotic fuck up on screen or horny on main, but she rarely gets the spotlight because that very same leeway makes her unrelatable to too many people. Some very "I'm in this picture and I don't like it" type of reactions.

Here's the part where I say "not every fan". Obviously, it's not every fan. If you don't want to read an Ino fic, don't. I'm not going to arrest you. But these generalizations are helpful in identifying patterns and for forcing ourselves to question our unconscious biases and unpack them. Which, personally, I find interesting.

3. All this to say that I'm honestly dismayed by how far fandom falls astray wrt Sakura at times. She actually has a lot of cool traits, interesting personality, and plenty of cracks in the plaster to make for a well-rounded, relatable character while still proudly repping the "normal girl" or "everyman" position. All she needs is some care and extrapolation, the same as most of the other characters. The foundation is there in canon even if it isn't fleshed out well enough on its own. But it's more than enough to build upon in fanon, which a lot of very skilled authors do super well! I previously talked about why I think Sakura is so much more than just protagonist-chan in this post and why it isn't a bad thing on its face. There are plenty of authors who understand that and write it well, and those fics are some of the best in the fandom imo. Unfortunately, there are also many authors who don't. Those stories are not bad and those writers don't suck. They just don't appeal to me personally because that's not what I'm looking for in Sakura fic.

4. Why is Sakura so shippable? I suspect that people take her "everyman" positioning and find very little that is offensive when you put her next to other characters. Like a staple food, rice or beans or potatoes. Goes with everything, and it gives room to sweat over the character you pair her with who, typically, is allowed to be more interesting and complex (the patient to Sakura's therapist). And if that's what you like, awesome! I wholeheartedly support you and I hope you create and find the content you wish to see. There's nothing at all wrong with this preference, and the Sakura fandom is very blessed to have a lot of good content to choose from. There is literally something for everyone, which is such a nice perk of being a Sakura fan.

how did you stop comparing your writing to other people's? if you can please share some of what helped for you ❤️

So. First things first. Step away from the fic.

Seriously. We have to develop the skill of being objective about writing before we can stop comparing.

Fic typically has a certain kind of writing style so you've gotta diversify your portfolio of inspo. Take a week long AO3 cleanse. Pick up a few books at the library, watch that movie you've been meaning to watch. Read some books about writing technique and only once you mentally feel refreshed can you come back with a clear mind.

And if you stop reading about your blorbo and start reading about some character in book you don't care a ton about you can disconnect. We project onto our faves, it's just a fact. So when you're reading a shitload of fic about your fave you're thinking 'yes, this is how i see them, no this isn't how i see them' and then you get into the spiral of 'but this is how i wish i could write about them' and you're on a one way train to Sadness.

But! Picking up, say, Call Me By Your Name- Elio and Oliver are fun, but they're not My Guys. So I can look at their experiences in the book more objectively and then actually look at the writing style itself. It's like taking two steps back from a painting and suddenly seeing the whole image at once. If you're too close (physically and emotionally) you're cut off from the big picture.

Then when you pick up a writing technique book, you can start seeing the stylistic choices used in Thing You Just Read But Are Not Too Close To. Get back into your literary analysis mindset. Get objective.

Now that you've done your cleanse, come back to a favorite fic. Print it out or download it to your phone. Treat it like an academic exercise. Highlight what you like about it. Figure out what skills that writer had to work on- was it description of places? Was it word choice?

Put those skills into a list of things YOU, the writer, want to work on. And then research how to get better at them! Remind yourself that you're learning and then you'll find yourself comparing in a objective way and not a self-esteem based way.

Now on the psychological side-

Comparing yourself comes from being insecure in some way (I know this, I have been there, I have suffered a lot from it). You gotta work on your self talk.

I've said this before, but work on changing the way you think about your work.

X writes blorbo better than me -> I need to reread the source material and write some meta about this aspect of blorbo

X's fic is so much better than mine, I'll never be that good -> X has spent a LOT of time working on their fic and if I work hard my fic will be good too

It sounds silly but god, it works! If I catch myself saying a negative thing then I stop myself, figure out how to reword it, and say that thought to myself in the new, not harsh way. Your brain works like a muscle, you've gotta train it until it remembers these things and you catch yourself before you spiral.

Also, if the person you're comparing yourself to is your friend- ask them about how they do the thing in their fic you like so much!

Remember that they're human too and are likely hitting the stages of grief as they write, and they're here to support you. My most feared writers are now my friends and I go to them for support when I'm in the weeds of self esteem.

Finally, if comparison is stopping you from sitting down and writing at all, you gotta just push through that pain. Write something. No pressure, it can suck, just put a 100 words down. And then the next day do something different. And the next. Just a 100 words! Until something sticks and you feel like you can keep going with it. And then apply previous steps so you don't give up before you're done.

And then? Post it. Fuck it. Your brain might be telling you it's not as good as X's fic but someone is gonna come into your comments and gush about loving it. If you can't post it because you're proud, then post it for the validation. Just share the thing so it becomes habit.

Lastly.

It's fic. We're not competing. We're not getting paid. We're doing this for love of our characters and if you're comparing and struggling with negative self talk then you're not having fun. Figure out what it'll take for you to find the joy in fandom and then try again.

I hope some of this helps! It's so hard but being objective about it is the most important thing you can learn to do ♥ And I promise, your work is better than you tell yourself it is.

. Killer doesn't really put himself out into the dating world, he's more likely to enter a relationship by becoming friends with someone first.

Top 5 characters you've enjoyed writing or thinking of writing for lately

It's all mdzs/tgcf characters since that's all I write lately ahaha

Not really in order (but a Trend will emerge...)

Nie Huaisang (mdzs) - My fave mdzs character!! There's a lot I project onto him, especially when I write his young and innocent self although admittedly writing the older version is more fun, since he can be as dramatic and rude as you need him to be (the younger version is the target of rudeness when I write him ahaha)

Jin Zixuan (mdzs) - HE IS A GOOD BOY WHO DESERVES THE WORLD! Also he's a tsundere and they're always fun to write. I really like his idealism and chivalry (courtly love my beloved) against the backdrop of him being the only son and heir of the greediest most corrupt sect in the setting. I sometimes have trouble writing him distinctly from Jiang Cheng since they're both tsunderes, but I think JC gets weighed down by his insecurities, but JZX is more likely to weigh everyone else down by acting first, thinking later. Sometimes.

Shi Qingxuan (tgcf) - Confession I actually a lot of trouble writing tgcf characters so they mostly exist in my thoughts. SQX imo has a lot in common with both NHS & JZX which might be why I love him so much.... he is also my comfort character because I project my worst qualities and fears onto him (everyone else out there is writing good heroic sqx and here i am focusing on his sheltered naivete and how damaging it really is) but it also means I just want him to be okay. I want to him to continue to be protected and taken care of ;w;

Shi Wudu (tgcf) - Also exists more in my thoughts than my words but... he lives in my head rent free. He's not a popular character and gets portrayed as a villain usually, but he's one of my favorites and everything about his backstory just feels so sad to me. I really don't think he has much of a life outside of protecting his brother. Russian tgcf fandom is usually nicer to him.... I wonder......

Pei Xiu (tgcf) - Is the protagonist of my current fic so I've been thinking about him a lot lately... A lot of the TGCF story arcs and relationship exist to mirror the main couple but that also means there are parallels and mirrors to be found between them as well... and his story honestly feels like a parallel to the Shiblings story. There's a lot of interesting things to explore between him & the Shiblings imo.... for some reason writing him brings out the purple prose in me. I'm not sure why... I don't think it actually fits him that well (does it fit anyone in tgcf?)

Do you know how many OCs I have 😭 I invented over 30 OCs total to slide into the book canon Good Omens universe while writing Your Own Side, including inventing personalities for Michael and Uriel since they had no canon representation before the TV show came out; probably a dozen or two OCs from a dragonrider novel I wrote that I never did anything with; at least forty OCs from a series of shitty knock-off X-men stories I wrote in high school and college; a handful of OCs for an even shittier Twilight knockoff I wrote in middle school; a smattering of OCs for miscellaneous one-off novellas and short-stories just sitting on my hard drive; not to mention all my PCs and NPCs from my various DnD campaigns. You want me to pick one???

Well OK, my current favorite is Thistle from Watch Your Step. He is a pixie and a whole five inches tall. He's also fantasy-disabled, having a damaged wing and only being able to fly a little bit at a time. He got separated from his family by a tragic accident and scooped up by a human who's just a little too interested in him, scientifically, and is having trouble adjusting to his new life among people who are ten times as tall as he is.

He's adventurous and curious and likes to see new things and think of how he can use them, or just appreciate them, but the way that got him into trouble recently has swamped his emotions with anxiety that makes him nervous to do anything anymore.

Pixies can do magic, but it's a learned skill that not everyone is very good at, like the way humans are with art and music. Pixies use a little bit of magic to fly--it's a simple spell that technically reduces how much they weigh, so that the lift generated by their wings is enough to get them off the ground. It's the norm for everyone to be able to do that, equivalent to walking and running, although same as walking and running not everyone can do it and some can do it to different degrees. Thistle has the same natural talent for magic as I do for music--none at all 🤣. He was always a much more tactile pixie, loving to work with his hands and sew. He loves to build and design things. He's a little bit insecure about the fact that he can't do magic, because a lot of magical creatures have the opinion that working with your hands is less valuable or less impressive than doing magic, so Thistle gets serious ego boost when any of the humans in his life seem impressed by his art and sewing. (They are impressed by pretty much anything he does. They're like oooooh you did that while being five inches tall??? impressive)

Just like humans need to eat to generate energy, pixies need to socialize to generate magic (although they need to eat too). I imagine that every species of magical creature needs some non-food source from which to derive magic--for example, I think that borrowers need to feel ownership over some items that they feel are valuable to generate the little magic that they need to live, hence why they are attracted to taking things from people; and some predator species get magic from eating smaller magical creatures, like a magic food chain. This is a long way of saying that Thistle needs his friends to love him or he'll shrivel up, which is a direct 1:1 trait I have and projected onto him.

I think, this will probably come as no surprise that my favourite character is Miss Kieu My Vu herself. Not only in Druck, she's my favourite character in the whole skamverse!

Yeah, so you know how I said I'd probably end up writing an essay about Kieu My at some point...you probably weren't prepared for this anon, because this is legit like a thesis 😬😆

I can't tell you how much I love Kieu My, honestly, after every clip with her, I would actually say it out loud.

I had my headcanons of what I thought she was going to be like based on S5 and her activity on IG (who she follows etc.). I thought she was probably a bit insecure, a nerd, and going to be a really soft LI. When she said 'Bro, what heart', I laughed because I knew she was going to be one of the greatest LI in Skamverse, and boy is she! So one reason she is my fave is because I literally watched the character that I had written in my head, come to life in front of me! ✨

It actually really hurts me and makes me sad knowing that a minority of people in the fandom are sending DM's to the writers saying Kieu My wasn't written well and underdeveloped because they want a Kieu My S7😰😡. They did such a stunning job with her and it pains me to think they might think they didn't.

Some people are saying that her background didn't get explored, but I would argue that it definitely did, we know she has a good, supportive relationship with her parents, that she cares about her Vietnamese heritage, that she feels insecure speaking Vietnamese as she's a 3rd generation immigrant, and her parent's didn't teach her it in great detail. She feels she owes her parents for giving up their dreams and all the hard work they do to make sure she has a good life, which I really relate to because that's how I feel with my mum, even though they don't expect anything back.

Also, you never get the whole background of a LI explored🤷���♀️ I also argue that a detailed 'background' does not = development or a character getting fleshed out. For example, Maya in SkamFr got a really detailed background, which she explained to Lola in ep 3. I love Maya, so this is not a dig at her. Yet, besides from explaining why she ghosted Lola when she found out about her addiction problem, they didn't give her much more personality than 'the sunshine' to Lola's darkness, and imo she's quite 2D. Development is loads of things, it is a personality being exposed, insecurities being addressed, change in behaviour.

Even in just episode 1, Kieu My already goes through great development. In 5x10, she is still seen as the aloof Insta and quite superficial. Then in the first clip of 6x01, you can see how awkward she is (I cannot express how good Nhungi is with the little details). The way she doesn't understand Fatou's question about what she's doing and replies straight faced that she's walking on the pavement 😂 The stuttering when she asks to use the skateboard. The first hint of her insecurity when she says she bets Fatou never fell off. Which can I just say, I love that line! Because as if Fatou would be able to use a skateboard the first time she tried. It shows Kieu My's insecurity but also how she views Fatou as this cool and collected person. Then when Fatou says she did fall off and laughs, Kieu My lets out a nervous breath to herself. Then laughter is heard, and she starts looking around self-consciously. I think it's probably a mix of thinking people may be laughing at her putting herself out there and looking like an idiot on the skateboard, along with her inner biphobia.

Then the clip in the Physics class we saw the first on screen hints at nerd Kieu My. I went nuts that day as we also got the text between Zoe and her talking about the Bio test, and how Kieu My was studying for it despite the answers being leaked. Druck said Nerd-Kieu My rights!✌ I love that Physics clip so much because as soon as the teacher finishes the question, Kieu My has her hand raised to answer, but also note she doesn't make the hand high or easy to see, showing us she doesn't draw attention to it. So, already in ep 1 you have Superficial-Kieu My -> awkward, nerd Kieu My. DEVELOPMENT!

One of the things I was pleasantly surprised with was that although I thought she was going to be soft and insecure, I thought she would try to hide it behind the Ice queen personality more, and fight her feelings.

It was probably during the NYE clip (which is also maybe why it's my no.1 clip 🥰) that I realised they weren't going to go down the route of her holding onto the 'cool girl' image. She was so shy and could hardly keep eye contact with Fatou when she was talking about her dream of studying Mars❤

I remember there was genuinely like 2 people other than me in the Kieu My fan club when she wasn't responding, and it was strange to me because she said in ep 2 that girls scare her and she doesn't know what to do. It didn't make sense for her to ghost Fatou for any other reason, as girl had spent 11hrs talking with Fatou a week before. The moment in ep 4 when Fatou talks to her in person and she's the shook Mr Krabbe meme 😂💀

She really spent the whole week reading Fatou's texts and then f*cked it up herself by trying to get Constantin off her back. Then my girl came through texting Fatou everyday Sun-Wed, until Fatou responded on Thursday. She really grabbed the bull by the horns and straight up asked Fatou on a date in the geekiest way possible. I'm sure she suggested the table tennis bar because Fatou did, so she thought 'this must be an appropriate first date venue' 😂. The last line on Thursday when she said she can't get Fatou out of her head 🥺 The amount of vulnerability, she's so brave 🤧

Volunteering to do the project with Fatou, again showing her bravery and not caring about what anybody else thought even with the rumour going around and Constantin sitting next to her!

Turning up with the plate of Vietnamese pancakes, and doing the nervous bounce she does. Revealing to Fatou that she doesn't think she's good enough, and everybody thinks she's perfect, and the pressure she puts on herself to live up to that. Crying when she thought she had blown her chance to be with Fatou. She's too soft I can't take it! 😭Even the detail that she always tries to hold Fatou's hand for comfort 🗣🗣

Getting her girl, and then immediately setting up a date. Laying herself bare about her inner biphobia, and Fatou being the first girl she's been with, her dreams of being an astrophysicist, and nerding out about the history of the universe 🥰

I absolutely love how she's the one to initiate the first kisses and touches, she just went in with both feet and never looked back, fighting her fears to be with Fatou. She is so brave! Which makes all her gestures of love even more immense! They would be incredibly romantic gesture anyway, I mean climbing a roof in her fancy clothes *swoon*, but the fact that she is doing it, despite being terrified🗣🗣

Being a straight A student, but not caring about the presentation and just Fatou's wellbeing. I burst into tears when she asked the teacher to stop and then argued back to him.

Showing how she finds it hurtful that no one really sees her and they only care about her looks. One of the things I was constantly blown away with was how Kieu My kept being given the space to speak. There's at least 3 key scenes where she is just allowed to breathe, and talk about her fears and issues, which I think is so rare.

How she is also an absolute 🤡 Referring to Fatou as Axolotlgirl in texts, sending Fatou songs and that she can't help think about Fatou while listening to them, but not knowing why and that she is in love. When she is too scared to talk to Fatou, but got her nails cut ASAP, and was liking all of Fatou's IG posts. Telling Fatou to stay away from her because she is so hurt but then having a full on breakdown for 2 weeks, calling people at 3am, and stalking Fatou's IG, accidentally liking posts, and thinking Fatou was moving on with Ava 🤡

Being such a caring person and going to help Constantin at 11pm, no questions asked, and keeping an eye on him at the party, making sure he was drinking water. Being there for Fatou because she knows something is going on, even though she's been hurt in their last interactions. Helping her parents at the store with no complaints, but fitting in time to print old Maths workbooks to help Fatou 🥰.

Getting a gold turtle and carrying it in her pocket because she was too scared to give it to Fatou! Setting up a stargazing date in someone's bedroom in the middle of someone else's birthday party 💀

Apologising to Ava because it's the right thing to do and not because she's with Fatou.

So, as you can gather, I think Kieu My is alright 😜

fljksjfkdj thank you so much for this and sorry it’s so late!!!!! Annleigh (& her and Farrah’s dynamic) is my absolute fave to analyze and the timing is so perfect because I have so many thoughts I need to get out about recent canon

Note: this was written over the span of about a week and isn’t proofread so may be a bit incoherent or repetitive at times

Ok so for a starter about Annleigh in the script: I initially disliked her for her brittleness - she’s very bright and peppy and shiny with quite hard exterior (her treatment of Farrah, etc), which breaks open quite a few times in the show. I’ve definitely grown to like her a lot more over the past few months, but the little bit of backstory we’ve gotten softens her slightly and gives her a lot more depth, which I love.

Something interesting I learned a few weeks ago when reading an interview with Preston is that he said over the drafts of the script, Farrah has changed the most and Annleigh has changed the least, but considering how different the Annleigh portrayals I’ve heard are, that probably means a lot of Annleigh’s characterization relies on playing off of Farrah. For example, a very vocal, bitter, angsty, emo Janet!Farrah who isn’t afraid of her addiction is balanced out by a very warm, more subdued, but extremely open Elizabeth!Annleigh who’s much less “feral” and more “lovesick teenager” (and as @letalloursingingfollowhim pointed out, it wouldn’t be surprising if the roles were reversed and Annleigh was the one who actively tried to form a relationship with Farrah but Farrah was the one to push her away because she’d rather go through all the hurt alone) whereas off-bway’s Farrahs are both much softer, more insecure, and trying as hard as they can to fit in balanced out by very blunt, energetic and soft yet brittle Annleighs. I would say Janet!Farrah is probably trying to distance herself from Elizabeth!Annleigh’s “perfect” persona because she doesn’t want to be associated with any of that and wants to break away from her family, especially assuming she comes from a family of abuse and alcohol overuse (and her drinking stems from a lot of that before she and Annleigh even met, while off-bway Farrah’s seems to be more recent and stem from loneliness and rejection), Caroline!Farrah feels like she’ll never meet Zoe!Annleigh’s standards for her and thinks she’ll be loved more if she does, and Zoe!Farrah is convinced that she has to keep trying because it’s not her constant mess-ups that make Kaitlyn!Annleigh “hate” her, it’s her dislike as a person and exasperation with responsibility, so if she just shows enough love she’ll finally feel enough. I’d also say that with both J&E and C&Z, Annleigh does feel like the older sister role (because canon) but the two don’t actually have much of an age gap (this could superficial because of height stuff and vibes, etc), but with Z&K, Farrah definitely feels at least a year younger and seems a little scared of Annleigh. While E!Annleigh is a little overwhelmed by J!Farrah, she does want to help her, but she’s not in the right mental place to do so because she’s still trying to move on from the loss of her dad - but she doesn’t blame that on Farrah - compared to K!Annleigh, who kind of uses anger to cope with the fact that she’s hurting inside and projects that all onto Farrah. She’s not ready to accept that she has a sister because doing so would be accepting who she’s lost and how her life has changed and can’t go back, because thinking about that would break away her “perfect” facade. And I think Zoe!Farrah knows this, a little, and wants to help if Annleigh would only let her in but doesn’t know what to say or do, but instead she pushes her out because she sees her as someone looking for trouble and taking away her emotional energy. I see Zoe!Annleigh not really having any strong resentment towards Caroline!Farrah, really just not understanding her, pointing towards an effort to keep their lives separate and an “I will look forward and pretend my problems don’t exist because that’s how my world works or it crumbles since I’m the perfect child in my family and teachers’ eyes” attitude, and Caroline!Farrah thinks that’s her fault, but Annleigh doesn’t really get what she’s doing wrong or how she’s hurting her. Watching the concert, I don’t have much to judge Elizabeth!Annleigh by (I would love to see her perform Move On, though), but I think she’d start off in complete and total denial (not even Kaitlyn!Annleigh’s “Clark and Farrah deserved it” but just refuse to even mention Farrah) and then unraveling to a complete mess because she’s heartbroken that she’s now alone and never got to have a relationship with her step-sister. On the flip side, Kaitlyn!Annleigh’s denial seems very anger-centered because she needs a reason not to grieve - she definitely has a little survivor’s guilt, but she’s not going to admit that she misses Farrah until she feels actively threatened (IDK) and her emotions in Move On seem very concentrated, like it’s years of bottled up trauma that she never fully let loose but she’s doing it now because she has no one left to lean on. A mix of the two, Zoe!Annleigh’s very quiet and I guess… “trembling” is the best word? during Move On like she just has no idea what to do because she’s lost everyone who cared about her and no one seems to get it, and she definitely doesn’t seem to believe what she’s saying about Farrah and Clark being punished, etc. (Also, quickly acknowledging the “you pray to god and wonder if he’s there” line in Phoenix - that’s SO SAD?!?? Annleigh’s faith is her one firm belief she’s held no matter what, the one thing she’s confident in despite her peers’ comments on it, and probably the primary thing she used to cope with her father’s death - and NOW, after losing her sister and boyfriend [the two people who would listen to her and get her through a rough year], she’s doubting the beliefs she used to lean on like a crutch? Poor girl please please give her a hug)

I have quite a few more thoughts but I’ve forgotten most of them so I’m gonna post this now and edit them in later - hope this was ok!! (It was mainly an Annleigh ramble/cheer stepsisters dissection I’m going to do a full individual analysis of each and go deeper into Farrah but for another time) Anyway thank you so much for this!!

Also her misguided feminism ah! But I can be a bit more lenient with that bc she was still very young when the series ended so. Also she was revealed to be part tree and then like. RONAN O CLOCK to be honest. I. don’t have any meta or complaints I just love him. I love him a LOT okay.. very much. Big love. Sharp edges tough guy but he names his dream animals chainsaw and gasoline and has a pooping blanket for chainsaw… I can’t remember the quote but that but in cdth where he was like the point is dreamer or not if people are going to get hurt I’m going to stop it… Much to think about. HIS GROWTH. IN THE DREAM THIEVES wow can you believe I read him in TRB and was like ‘I don’t care for him’ ddhfjdhf and then in the dream thieves I’m like.. Henry. Ah. This is where we get kind of controversial jdhjdfh I’m sorry but. I’m going to be honest I like him well enough as a character but I don’t care for him much I’m sorry I just. It’s because he was introduced so late. And only became an important character towards like.. the last half of TRK? I mean, I’d have loved him if he was introduced earlier, hell at least have him come into play in BLLB. The issues I have with him isn’t because of anything about him as a character though, I think it’s all about the way he was handled. I think because he came in so late, there just wasn’t enough time to do justice to the depth that he had, or give him an arc or anything, or enough time to connect with him. Also a part of me feels like he was in there just to kind of tie up Blue and Gansey’s stories and give them something to do after the end of TRK (which sucks because like… making your only canon POC being primarily to develop/give your white characters storylines… (blue isn’t white in my mind but like she was written “colorblind” and when that happens it usually means the author viewed them as white at least in the beginning jhfhgfj. but i don’t remember it too well so if i’m wrong lmk please!)). But probably my biggest problem is: I couldn’t help get the vibe that MS was facing criticism for the lack of diversity and so decided to bring in an asian character. Like, I feel that way bc he came in so late, and because of that he was so half-baked I’m.. gah. GAH. That’s unfair maybe henry is a cool dude hdhfg but I just can’t warm up to him because of this :/

I wish that was kind of addressed but meh, overall it doesn’t bother me too much. I think they’re great friends :)

Ronan and adam… I can’t talk about it too much. I really can’t!! I really really can’t! the fact that adam goes to gansey like what is love and gansey is like she makes me quiet… and then adam is like “he was so still inside”.. :( omg the bit during trb when ronan is going on a swearing tirade and adam is like “they didn’t start making the civic until ‘73 <3” what a JACKASS I love him. Wait I have to say: while this one is not really a big deal compared to all their other moments, my favourite quote is “ and he realised that while he’d been looking at ronan, ronan had been looking at him” :uwu face:

so many!! the main one for me atm is “everything is the same but otto gets adopted by a loving set of parents/ends up literally anywhere more competent than st sebastian’s” and the idea that number one really needed an excuse to sponsor otto for hive but an otto who was actually nurtured and cared for as a child just doesnt end up with the same moral greyness as canon otto does thanks to his leadership of the orphanage. i also have my “au where shelby and otto date for a week but it’s disastrous” and i think a lot abt an au where lucy lives and how ottra would’ve happened had she stuck around (spoiler: lucy is far more self aware than otto and wouldve dumped him once she realised he was just projecting his insecurities and feelings for laura onto her). this is very much a “dont get me started” question lol

I'm not sure if it was entirely an act of forgiveness and mercy considering how suicidal I'm sure Hanzo is, or if letting him live with his regrets was a form of punishment but
