started thinking about my pmd au designs again and wanted to touch up on them while giving design notes

reasons for my choices under the cut! (spoiler warning)

siffrin:

first and foremost full credit to my wife @vaugarde for being the one to come up with brionne!siffrin because despite being The Popplio Guy i probably wouldn't have thought of this lmao

her reasons for deciding on brionne comes down to three simple reasons:

brionne being a pop star/entertainer aligns with siffrin's whole thing of being a performer in a play

brionne's dex entries say it tries very hard to make everyone around it happy, while also masking its own sadness. both of these things are very siffrincore.

my wife and i are both massive popplio line fans. they're literally my favourite pokemon ever (they're not his all-time favourites but they're close). of course we're going to be biased with this pick LMAO.

mirabelle:

when it comes to a pokemon au mirabelle i usually see her be turned into an eevee and i LOVE this idea and fully agree with them and love the designs i've seen of it, but i wanted to do something a little different, so i decided on unovan zorua. as zorua can make illusions that kinda fits with mira's thing of changing but also staying the same. like deep down there's some aspects of yourself you can't change and you shouldn't have to change them.

i also figured the psychic/fighting would be really good for alluding to the nerd/jock metaphor.

honestly? vibes. making the resting bitch face woman the resting bitch face pokemon. she's also obviously very intelligent which fits with the general perception of psychic types. and also i really love meowstic it's my 4th favourite pokemon behind the popplio line, koraidon and lopunny.

the note about how meowstic aren't usually seen in ka bue is meant to be a reference to how meowstic was introduced alongside the pokemon region that's based on france, referencing her half-vaugardian heritage.

bonnie:

the main inspo behind this choice was based on that one piece of flavour text where bonnie tells the story of how nille once made a huge ass hammer and when she tried to hang it up on their walls it ended up breaking the wall. so that made me think of of tinkaton!nille so by proxy that would give us tinkatink!bonnie. i love the idea bonnie making their own pan using metal like how tinkatink tends to mess around with bits of metal it finds (<- guy that is enjoying seeing the shenanigans dot's tinkatink is getting up to in the horizons anime).

something I appreciate about FYR that I haven't seen mentioned (tho maybe it has been lol) is that most PMD and PMD-adjacent comics I see include the isekai element from those games, and while I get that, it's not my favorite thing. I love the idea of a PMD inspired world that's not focused on that, and if I can ever find the time and motivation, I'd love to write my own story or comic in a similar way at some point. I've even considered translating a nuzlocke of a traditional Pokémon game much like you've done here! perhaps a randomized one?

anyway, keep doing what you do. I've been reading all your comics for a while (and TWE) and while they do cover some uncomfortable topics at times, I think it's important for these kinds of stories to be told and it's good to see more diverse stories out there

Thank you very much! Yeah, FYR is literally the PMD story where the human never shows up so we just follow some random local minority girl instead. (This will become relevant someday.) I love writing PMD stories with or without humans, but when I first started writing them, I never included humans! Till World's End (and Solstice, its discontinued predecessor) are the first PMD stories I wrote that involved transformed humans. Now that I've tried it, it's actually a pretty fun trope. But yeah, PMD shouldn't need to require humans!

Diversity is so important in writing! We really need more of it out there so I'm just here tryna do my part. I'm a minority in many different ways, so this really is just kinda my fight haha.

[OPTIONAL] Doodle Request/Challenge: Draw 2 Glitch Pokémon if they were members of a PMD Duo (I both would love to see how you'd approach this, but also I think the concept of two things that shouldn't be of this world wearing scarves that somehow fit while being on a team to save Pokémon is cute (Note that the easiest of the Glitch Pokémon to draw are the ever present Bad Egg, and the Generation III Question Mark Sprites).

Also, while I'm here, I just wanted to say I really enjoyed the Fangz name origin comic. Both something very heartfelt while also hilarious. I can't wait to see whatever you post next!

Two mysterious Pokemon that, despite their good intentions, should probably be avoided when seeking allies for dungeon runs. Other exploration teams assume that they came into existence during some sort of time distortion that occurred before temporal tower was fully repaired.

Em constantly carries around tons of berries in order to make up for the fact that being around her decreases her allies' ability to heal wounds naturally, not to mention that reviver seeds don't seem to work in her presence. Because Em's treasure bag is constantly filled to the brim with oran berries, she often forgets to pack other useful items.

Polly is a Pidgeotto... or perhaps a Noctowl? Her colors don't exactly make it very clear. She speaks in a song-like voice, and once your get her to start singing, it's very difficult (if not impossible) for her to stop, and there's many things that inspire her to start. In dungeons, her song has the ability to paralyze anyone who listens to it, even allies.

The egg the two carry with them has remained unhatched for a long time, so they've decided to try and take care of it on their own due to feeling bad about taking up space in Chansey's daycare. Most Pokemon have come to associate this egg with bad luck, so the two try their best to keep their eyes on it at all times so that nothing happens while they're not looking.

Also perhaps for the first time ever, the yellow tinted paper worked in my favour 🎉 (It usually makes it tougher to produce a nice sketch 'scan' imo?)

your grovyle and dusknoir pieces matter so much to me because you capture the very essence of how much the green gecko bastard and his 7.11ft tall ass ghost-guy-that-was-sent-to-kill-him-but-whoops-something-happened matter to each other and just how they change the other while still being all awkward at certain times because they are in a situation that involves feelings in which they are both not used to (grovyles emotional tendencies where he pushed down things and thoughts that would otherwise doom the mission he was on and dusknoir just being completely foreign to them because he strives from a world where kindness and love is seen as a vulnerability so he just strayed far from things that will inevitably stab him in the back) and how they try to navigate it while having to bear the annoyances of the other but still viewing them in high regard nonetheless. i dont go here too much but i figured i may as well say it because i think you're cool and because you draw those two annoying little studs so well. have a good day scribz

They are sooo important to each other, I don't think we appreciate enough how pivotal they are to each other's development, especially grovyle to dusknoir's. Still cant believe the ghost's parting word and thought was a a most thankful message to his old enemy, thanking him for giving his life meaning, for helping him not regret having truly *lived*, not just survived. I wish Dusknoir got some more dialogue after coming back to life, but those being his last words, in addition to him constantly referencing grovyle's speech, just goes to show how far he's internalized grovyle's words.

And the way Grovyle genuinely sees and reaches towards Dusknoir's inner goodness, *while* he's actively being betrayed, is beyond words. Grovyle loves his friends deeply and by this point he's clearly gone far enough to consider Dusknoir close to that status. Maybe Dusknoir protecting him from a blow hit too close to home and changed the dynamic in his eyes from "temporal ally" to just "ally". It can't be a coincidence that Grovyle opens up and explains his motives and ideas after Dusknoir takes the attack for him.

You just can't get one without the other in my mind, it's how they contrast and mirror each other, it's how the game switches the tables and flips their alignment so seamlessly. The thief-captor dynamic turning on its head once you see their true colors. How dusknoir appears more mature and put together thanks to his charm and social skills, only for him to end up learning and looking up to Grovyle, whose more developed life philosophy and selfless objective end up convincing Dusknoie to fight for something beyond himself.

Special Episode 5 is one of rhe best pmd chapters/story out there, and it's the most basic premise of Grovyle and Dusknoir working together. The writers developed them so well in conjuction that they can't be separated in my head.

But even then their contrasting personalities makes them so fun to put them into situations, despite the ares wjere they might overlap. they're both great but they belong together. And celebi just adds even more flavour to the mix by adding someone so radically different from them in her view and approach to things (seeing as shes one of the onlu characters explicitly in love, maybe even in priorities outside world-ending cataclysms xD). Future trio in post-canon is simply too rich, even the crumbs from PSMD links them together and that's enough for me.

(And also just in general the vibes are so good, we make fun of dusknoie for the "looking nervous having your back exposed to me" but grovyle's "you cling to me beyond expectation" and "i surrender, do with me as you will". BESIDES ALREADY THINKING ABOUR DUSKNOIR WAY MOEE THAN ANYONE ELSE.

he goes up to partner during the sunrise and goes "thinking about dusknoir?" whilw it turns out partner is thinking of how much they love the beach and their friend 😭😭 and then grovyle says in his letter "hey watch out for dusknoir bc he WILL BE BACK I KNOW HIM" and hero and partner jusr go "oh yeah that guy. remember that guy??" like THEY DONT REMEMBER WHO TRIED TO KILL THEM A DAY AGO?? 😭😭 why they dgaf lmao)

Tell me about each of your PMD teams!

OH BOY ok okok

starting off with team obsidian (explorers of sky)

Mistral is. complicated. for starters i have played as her in rescue team, explorers, And super because at the time they were kinda just. me. less of an oc and more just my self insert (i actually changed their name because her old name is. just my name now)

but lately i've wanted her to be her own character and not me in totodile form so i'm kinda in the process of redoing everything about them.

Cinder i can say more about! they are a disaster. an absolute mess. sopping wet kitten born in a cardboard box all alone. she's wanted to be an explorer since she was little, but being a huge coward kinda got in the way of that. they got that scar on their chest when they went into a dungeon alone and it scared them away from exploring for a long time. it wasn't until she met mistral that she started to get her confidence back and they're much calmer and less afraid of everything nowadays!

now rescue team. i played as mistral again in my first pmddx playthough along with a cubone partner but. i have kinda replaced them as my Main pmd1 team with these guys. oops.

campfire are much more developed characters anyways so im gonna talk about them!

fig (she/any) is very quiet, as are basically all of my heroes because my selectively mute ass keeps latching onto silent protagonists. she's definitely the one i've given the not talking trait to the most though. chive is extremely extroverted and chatty so she handles all the talking. others tend to see them as closed off or mysterious because they can't get a good read on her. they're really sweet though

chive's main gimmick is she likes cooking! will probably settle down and open a little cafe once she's done with the rescue team business. likes to experiment with random berries and nuts she finds (fig keeps joking she's going to poison herself, but she owns like 3 different foraging guides, she knows what she's doing.)

next is team hydra! their ref is old and i need to redo it so here's one of my heropartnerweek pieces badly cropped. their names are Ceru (she/xe) and Olivine (he/they)

it turns out i lied when i said all my heroes are quiet ceru is actually pretty outgoing. still the more introverted of the duo but mainly because olivine is a people pleaser extraordinaire. she actually had a pretty boring life as a human and is a lot happier as a pokemon. she was Devastated about returning to the human world, mostly because xe didn't want to leave xyr friends, partially because oh come on it's so much cooler here i don't wanna go back to working retail

olivine, as i said, is a people pleaser, often to his detriment. he's always prioritizing other pokemon's happiness, even when it's at the cost of his own. they get better at this over time (ceru helps him a lot with learning to say No). he and ceru are inseparable besties. they're like a comedy duo. 2 things have olivine's undying commitment, his friends and The Bit

finally. super. again i already talked about mistral so here is Basil.

honestly? i feel like they don't have much of my own spin. pmsd partner is already a perfect character. they are so full of love. they love making others smile and they're maybe a little too enthusiastic about it. they tend to come off as overly friendly at best or annoying at worst. before meeting mistral they were pretty lonely despite trying so hard to make friends. they're very happy to finally have a real close friend who likes them how they are

As a huge PMD lover, I absolutely adore your Hisui PMD AU. However, my one and only complaint and question is : why are all the characters colors so muted? Like, it fits Ingo, since he's an old ghost type and all, but Akari is so grey and dark. I like the detail with the tips of her ears being blacker to fit with her canon hair color, but the rest of her body is very dark and unlike an Eevee (though if she evolves into an Umbreon then that'd be cool foreshadowing). Even Rei as Pikachu, his yellow fur is much less vibrant.

I'm not saying everyone has to be all vibrant and neon colors with the saturation cranked up to 300% ; Ingo as Typhlosion is a good example of a muted color scheme, and I love it when artists add their own creative flare to OG Pokemon designs (have you seen any of those 'Ability forms' of Pokemon changing slightly depending on their ability? It's really cool). But it's just an interesting color palette I noticed with the majority of your designs that I couldnt help but ask the reason for them.

Ironically, the brightest character here color wise is Silvally Volo. But it makes sense, with his whole "Arceus pls notice me" schtick.

Again, LOVE the PMD AU, and I cant wait to see more!

And to answer this, it really comes down to two things, I think; mainly, it’s just naturally part of my artstyle. I just gravitate towards more muted colors as I like them, they’re easier on the eyes lol. I know it’s probably not easy to tell I like them though, as most of my art is entirely greyscale. And I will color pick from the characters a lot when I usually draw them with color, but for these, I did not.

And second, colors appear differently on my devices, so sometimes they end up with a little different colors than I intend. I notice my colors usually look a little different on mobile and desktop than they do on my drawing tablet. (Also why I’m apt to color pick from refs)

But some of it is just stylistic choices too! I intentionally made Eevee Akari’s fur darker than a regular Eevee’s, so that the blackish ears and paws don’t clash so much with a lighter color. (I did originally try the default eevee colors when making her design, and didn’t like it because of that).

And as for Pikachu Rei, I just made his fur closer to the colors I use usually for their satchels, since that was the most prominent yellow in their survey corps uniforms. ^^

Okay i just got another idea like right now after reading this post once more (it's the fourth time, i love it so much).

I kinda can't stop thinking of how the child will grow. How will the others (Grovyle, Dusknoir, Celebi, Kip, Cresselia, etc...) act with him? Is he some kind of Darkrai clone or does he have exclusive features (physically or/and with his ability). What kind of person will he want to be or will be? And the question I should have ask before anything else: What is his name.

Also what will be the gender of the child because i say he but if the child really comes from Twig and Ark he can be anything in a way (like, they could be a boy or a girl from Twig but they also can be a neutral gender from Ark)-

Personally, i imagined the idea of the child having similar power and physical body as Ark but with some feature of Twig. They could control the few powers they have of Ark perfectly without trying (they even could be able to not put people around them in nightmares when they fall asleep) but would easily lose control over their negative emotions (Anxiety, Sadness, Anger, Fear, etc...) especially with their personality near of the one of Twig (or even worst than Twig on some point).

You’re not bothering me whatsoever! It’s always a treat to receive your asks and see all of your ideas and perspectives… also I will regularly open my inbox to plan my next posts and see your reminders to actually take care of myself and always go “OH SHOOT I HAVEN’T EATEN YET TODAY” and bolt into the kitchen to scarf down some leftovers, hehe.

First off: The baby is a girl! Ark proposes naming her Opal for absolutely no reason in particular, and Twig sees no reason to disagree with the name, so that’s what the baby is called from thereon. Pal and Pally are common derivatives used by Twig.

I’m working on a piece that will show how everyone will react to her, but it’s not ready yet, so I’ll just give a teaser: Celebi is completely blindsided by the baby’s appearance— she had no idea that something like that was going to happen in this timeline, and it’s a pretty big event to have missed whenever she peeked ahead in the timeline before now!

I haven’t decided entirely on what Opal’s personality will be as she ages, but for now, she’s pretty much your average baby— minus the crying. She is eerily quiet and barely vocalizes at all, to the point Twig gets worried about her learning to talk— and she promptly says her first full sentence immediately after. She’s very particular about food as well as material textures, and is prone to getting overwhelmed by bothersome sensory input, especially loud and clamorous noises. This isn’t something that she will grow out of, though she will collect a lot of strategies to help manage and minimize her overwhelm as she ages.

I’m unsure how much you know abt pokémon so I’m gonna do my best to explain but this is a lifelong special interest so i may miss some things^^

Quick going over the ones you didn’t ask about:

Mewtwo: clone created to replicate Mew, Went Horribly Wrong, ended up destroying the lab it was born in. It’s even a really long time since I’ve seen the movie but i believe the mewtwo there is neglected child core. This is REALLY Angela especially because in pokedex entries they often talk about the thing that makes mewtwo nothing like mew is that it’s “heartless”. poor poor angela baby…

Mega Gardevoir: This is a mostly aesthetic pick. That thing really looks like her if it’s shiny (see image) and the colors match perfect. the way gardevoir is portrayed in pmd reminds me a lot of Angela. Gardevoir is about immense loyalty to a trainer (even if it ruins your life forever and the trainer does not care, as shown in pmd) and i read it as something about the script

Porygon2: Honestly this could be any of the mons in this line but Porygon is a digital being and the first fully synthetic pokemon which begins acting in ways which were not programmed as it evolves. Kind of represents Angela acting in ways a machine should not and breaking free of her predetermined role to me :)

Now onto the pokémon you actually asked about!! :)

First up, Meowstic!

This first part is a small design thing but this thing has Angela’s face to me, especially with the yellow eyes with red pupils. Angela’s eyes are inconsistent in canon but I like to represent them with both red and yellow to represent both of her “parents” (sorry Benjamin… i love you but u aren’t included there😔)

This pokedex entry is one of the main reasons this is an angela pokémon to me, aside from vibes.

It has the same “closed eyes to repress” thing that Lobcorp angela has going on, just with repressing incredibly explosive powers instead of repressing The Horrors!

These pokedex entries are really goofy but they read very angela to me :) its unfriendliness is part of its charm!

Also i have no idea when i’ll ever get to post these so now is a good time as any to drop meowstic angela :)

Nihilego is a slightly different case because it’s tied less to dex entries and more to how it is used in the story of sun and moon. I haven’t played those games in YEARS so i might be a little bit questionable with my reasoning but this one’s really important.

Nihilego is intentionally designed to mirror one of the human characters in pokémon sun and moon.

Anyway this human character’s mother has neglected/abandoned her in obsessive pursuit of this pokémon and other Ultra Beasts.

The fact this pokémon not only has a similar silhouette to angela but serves as a “replacement” for a human character in a parent’s mind while also being Distinctly Nonhuman… it’s by no means a perfect comparison but there’s Something There

This dex entry always gets me too… it’s just a girlie… :(

It really makes me want to replay sun/moon because i feel like my memory of the story being really shaky has me on the edge of a breakthrough about this thing… but it looks like angela and i can draw story parallels basically:)

I have No Idea if this is coherent but I hope it cleared things up a little ^^^

4. How many WIPs do you have right now?

actually shockingly few! ever since i finished my big owl house editing pass back in june i've not done a whole lot in terms of projects...and recently i've been playing rain world so instead of writing im playing rain world like 24/7. currently my only main project is the dess raises kris au, and in that 'verse the only thing i'm writing right now is a dess/chara relationship study. i WOULD finish it, but, uh. rain world. (<- guy who is trying so hard not to write rain world fic. i probably wont but also i am always tormented by ideas. but consider i have to tell the story of my slugpup scooter SCOOTER I WONT EVER FORGET YOU--)

5. What's a fic idea you've had that you will never write?

probably countless that i do not remember right now! but digging around through my drafts, i've got a few deltarune daemon aus that won't ever see the light of day...one of them was a fangame where the player played as one of kris's two daemons, and the other was a fic where ralsei was kris's daemon. the ideas from there have basically been repurposed elsewhere--a lot of my kris&ralsei stuff went into various works, and the fangame stuff is being reworked into the dess raises kris au.

beyond that, in terms of things that are actually abandoned and won't be used elsewhere, there are so many daemon aus that i've left behind for one reason or another, though the gravity falls transcendence au is the one that i think was the best...that one postcanon his dark materials fic i was gonna write where lyra and pan return to will's world and cause general shenanigans there with him and kirjava...a vera-centric son of sea foam wings of fire au because vera is the love of my life and i was rereading wings of fire bc i felt nostalgic....oh my god fantasy high SOPHOMORE YEAR FIC, which i tried to start TWICE, once from fig's pov and once from ayda's that was their road trip back home and i have some very funny snippets from...MY INFINITY TRAIN DAEMON AU WAIT THAT ONE STILL GOES SO HARD ACTUALLY. okay drop everything ive ever said the fact that i never wrote my infinity train book two daemon au is a travesty. i was cooking with that one.

11. Do you have specific playlists for writing fics?

sort of! i usually always have at least one or two songs i connect to any given fic, but in terms of what i listen to when actually WRITING, it's changed over the years. i used to put on compilations of video game music--usually utdr, pmd, and then just whatever got recommended to me lol--then i did like. those character playlists people make on youtube? mostly bc they tended to pull from the same pool of songs so it became good background noise lol. now i use the youtube mix or whatever its called for a similar reason--it tends to play the same handful of songs ive listened to a lot, so they dont distract me.

14. If you could see one of your fics adapted into a visual medium, such as comic or film, which fan fic would you pick?

oh i LOVE this question, and it would be without a doubt my nimona daemon au oh, are you at all like me. nimona itself is obviously both a comic and a movie, and i'd say animated film since the fic follows the movie plot more--i think there'd be a LOT of really cool scenes you could get with that fic. i also think i could make killer animatics based on my fics if i could draw good enough <3 and thats not a joke i have scripts and sketch storyboards and everything. maybe one day i'll finish one of those.

12. the unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them

Simisear is not a spectacular Pokémon but it has a neat concept (part of the three wise monkeys, as well as a second starter trio) and is perfectly serviceable as a Pokémon! I also just like that it’s pre-evo has a very “monkey” moveset.

Volbeat is a bug meant to look like a greaser! How can you not love that!

As for like, human characters, I have never understood the Hop hate? He’s just kind of a good-natured kid and I just want to give the poor guy a break.
