"Jean Valjean went into the prison hulks sobbing and trembling. He came out emotionless. He went in despairing. He came out dour.
What happend inside that soul?"
I read this in the book and it really struck me... I wanted to make a drawing of this quote. Something bigger and more experimental using the digital medium, because i do need to practice.
So enjoy this experimental piece!! I went trough some difficult stages with it but i think it looks pretty good!! I have an idea for another piece but i don't know if it will happen!

someone make me continue this story 😭 (more from this here and here)
---
It was the sensation of someone watching him that woke Valjean. He opened his eyes, wincing at the pain in his neck, and rubbed the offending muscle. He wasn’t getting any younger. The chair he’d fallen asleep in was uncomfortable, but it was the closest surface he’d been able to use to rest after throwing Javert on the bed a few hours ago.
Javert who had cried and clung to him like a drowning man; who had… claimed his lips with such palpable desperation that had made something in Valjean respond to it—and that Valjean refused to think about—who had collapsed in his arms and succumbed to his exhaustion.
Who now sat on Valjean’s bed, barefoot and in Valjean’s shirt and ill-fitting waistcoat, and watched him with a strange and unfamiliar expression devoid of everything Valjean was used to seeing there and yet, no less disquieting. Javert’s short black hair and beard were interwoven with silver. The time passed added harshness to his features but below, there was something—and Valjean didn’t think he’d ever use the word for Javert—almost vulnerable. It had been there since the ride in the carriage and had only grown and deepened as the night went by. Not even sleep had been able to erase it.
When their eyes met, Javert hurriedly stood up and tugged on his waistcoat to straighten it, face hardening. It still wasn’t enough for the strange vulnerability to disappear, and the unease in Valjean’s stomach remained.
“You’re still here,” Javert said, something between a statement and astonishment.
Valjean felt himself nod. Leaving had never crossed his mind. “Cosette is safe.” He’d fulfilled his promise to Fantine. “She has another to take care of her now.” Cosette’s heart was gone. It belonged to another, and Valjean had no place in it anymore.
Valjean’s throat tightened as he remembered her last words to him two days ago—I hate you!—and the resentment and despair he’d felt at reading what was her letter to Marius Pontmercy and the expressions of love written in it. Cosette was slipping through Valjean’s fingers, spreading her wings and flying away, leaving him behind, burdened and shackled to the ground.
Valjean resented Marius Pontmercy; he had saved his life. He had left his address on Cosette’s nightstand so she could find him, but Valjean couldn’t bear the thought of her leaving and smiling at another. But even less could he bear her tears.
If Javert would only take him away… Valjean swallowed and stood up. “I don’t have a reason to escape or resist, Inspector Javert. I told you I was yours.”
The muscles under the skin of Javert’s neck worked.
A knock on the door. “Papa? Are you awake?”
Javert’s eyes widened.
Cosette. No. It was too early for her to be awake, surely. But the sun shining in through the window told a different story. How did he not notice how late in the morning it was?
Cosette and Javert could never meet. She couldn’t know! Valjean couldn’t let her know what he was.
A criminal.
A thief.
A monster.
She’d be horrified.
If I ever crossed paths with one of those men, I think I would die. Just from looking him in the face. Cosette’s voice echoed in his mind. Disgust. Fear. If she ever knew that those men were men like him, she would never want to lay her eyes on him again. She would never smile at him again.
Without her, he would die.
“Valjean?” His name—strange and unfamiliar—urgently whispered, pierced through the darkness swirling in his mind and dispersed it slightly.
Another knock on the door. “Toussaint prepared breakfast.”
Breakfast. In a room with pieces of Javert’s uniform all over the furniture. The coat and jacket could probably be explained, if they weren’t examined too closely, but not the bicorne.
“Valjean.” More than a sound, just a movement of lips.
Javert was the cause. Javert was the eye of the storm, offering a momentary calmness and light, chaining him to the here and now before the turbulent darkness would fill him again.
Valjean took a deep breath and exhaled. “I’ll come soon!” He ran a hand through his hair, caught in the intensity of Javert’s eyes, listening to Cosette’s heels clicking on the floor as she retreated.
“She doesn’t know,” he said to Javert, harshly with an undercurrent of a warning. He could not have Javert ruin things for him even more. Cosette couldn’t know. “She can’t ever know.”
Javert stepped closer. “Valjean—”
“Fauchelevent. I go by Fauchelevent. Please, Javert. Don’t tell her anything.” Valjean’s heartbeat quickened. “Let me have breakfast with her, and then I’ll go with you. I promise. I promise,” he said, his voice breaking.
Tension appeared around Javert’s lips. A storm in his eyes disturbed his otherwise calm and unreadable face, oddly aimed inwards, almost making Valjean believe he wouldn’t be caught in it.
Almost.
“Please,” he whispered.
Javert’s hand curled into Valjean’s collar, pulling him closer. “How can you not know?” Desperate, his eyes wide. “I let you go. I let you go, Jean Valjean.”
Javert’s hot breath brushed Valjean’s face.
“I let you go.” Calmer. Softer. The fingers on Valjean’s collar tightened, the fabric pressing into the back of Valjean’s neck as if his hand and mind were not in agreement.
Valjean couldn’t move. Couldn’t believe.
“I shall resign my commission.” The grip loosened, and Javert’s hand fell.

Hey y’all um. Can I please rant about my favorite Les Mis fanfic pretty pls
the What Streak of Madness series (beginning with A Change of a Bizarre Kind) by M_Moonshade was the first Les Mis fanfic I ever read and to this day it is my absolute favorite. Ive reread it a thousand times and it never gets old
basically, it’s a retelling/crossover between Les Mis and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (dw you don’t need to know a lot about that story, what you need to know is in the description/notes) where basically Javert takes a potion that releases his darkest impulses, including his extreme attraction to the mayor
it’s extremely well written, author has fantastic writing style
we get tender moments, we get angsty moments, we get smutty moments
very fun smut, bottom javert
mystery and intrigue!! ooo!
multiple “books” in the series that expand on the story/the boys relationship
Fantine is alive! And a Girlboss!!
the characters are very well done, author had a really good understanding of the characters
and it has a happy ending!!
yeah anyways I love it so much go read it if your interested <3
