Iris Van Herpen, Fall 2022 coature

Future oriented, inspired by post-humanism, metaverse, futurism and hyperreality.

Inspired also by Ovid's Metamorphoses, especially by the 3 poems of Daphne, Arachne and Narcissus.

Collection consists of 16 physical looks and 3 digital ones.

Made as mark for her 15th anniversary in the fashion industry. She considered doing a retrospective into her career but quickly threw the idea away as her whole thing is looking forward and not back.

All of the 3 poems come from Greek mythology

Daphne - nymph and daughter of god of rivers. Apollo and Eros got into fight, to spite Apollo Eros shot arrow which made Apollo fall in love with Daphne. Daphne tried to run away but Apollo was persistent. Daphne ended up begging the goddess Gaia to turn her into a laurel tree which which happened. In art Daphne is often shown transforming into the tree, through out the fashion show there's a sculpture of Daphne transforming.

Arachne - skilled weaver which challenged Athena. They had competition to weave a tapestry, Athena was angry at how good Arachne was and tore Arachne'a tapestry. Arachne, being disappointed, hanged herself. Athena felt sorry and loosened the loose thus making it look like a cobweb, Arachne changed herself into a spider.

A lot of the designs are cobweb-like and made out of some form of silk, thus taking inspiration from the myth.

Narcissus - young shy man, but very beautiful that even nymphs wanted him. But soon they got annoyed by his selfishness and asked the goddesses Aphrodite and Nemesis to punish him. The nymph Écho fell in love with him and tried to persue him but he was ignoring her as he was too obsessed with himself. That angered the gods and they punished him. One day Narcissus was looking at his reflection in the river, he fell into the river and drowned. At the place of his death a flower narcis bloomed, since then the flower has been associated with death.

Personally I don't see any relation with this myth. The only thing I can think of is that future = selfishness and narcissism, but I'm really not sure & it might be a reach.

Met Gala 2024: My Top 8 Women's Looks

I can't believe it's been a year since I did this but here we are again, digesting all the looks from this year's Met Gala theme "A Garden in Time." Those that attended either met the brief, passed with flying colours and played this year's grand staircase and others didn't. Originally I was going to do top 5 but after going over every look on Vogue the list grew into becoming my top 8. As always my opinions are my own and not gospel. So please don't take what I say personally and let's remember that fashion is a form of art and art is subjective. 1. Mona Patel wearing Iris Van Herpen Holy shit this look was off the scale and I'm not being over dramatic either. I saw the gown this morning and loved it on her, but when I saw that it had MOVING PARTS and that she was styled by the iconic Law Roach, I was floored. This man is a stylist genius and Mona looked stunning from head to toe. 2. Zendaya wearing Maison Margiela by John Galliano I wasn't a fan of this look when I first saw it but the more I do look at it the more I love it especially in comparison to her second look. I just love that the gown is not black with the mix of green and blue making the gown standout. Plus I love seeing subtle details that fit the brief but aren't tacky or garish. 3. Lana Del Rey wearing Alexander McQueen Lana's overall look was giving me witch queen in the woods and I loved it. It was dramatic, bold and stood out amongst the sea of boring gowns and suits that resembled a large funeral procession. Plus it's Alexander McQueen, the fashion house that blended art and fashion together and is still iconic after Lee's passing. 4. Taylor Russell in Loewe Sometimes less is more and Taylor Russell's look was just this and I thought it was beautiful, especially the wood grained inspired corset. We all know what it represents and paired with high end fashion it was both perfect and different. 5. Tyla wearing Balmain This gown might've looked boring at first glance or even close up but the fact it was made of sand blew my mind. I love the fact that it represented the theme perfectly but wasn't about flowers, trees, birds or bugs, but the earth we stand on. Also I just love the fact that Tyla's purse was an hourglass with sand in it representing time itself. GENIUS! 6. Emma Chamberlain wearing Jean Paul Gaultier This was another gown I wasn't mad on when I first saw it. However seeing everyone rave about what the gown represented made me fall in love with it and thats... roots. Again I love the different take on this year's theme and the fact that's brown lace as oppose to the usual black or white. 7. Elle Fanning wearing Balmain and Cartier I just love the fact this gown looks like a water fountain thats been frozen in time and I think it's ethereal to a tee. The way the gown has been sculpted is just mind bogglingly beautiful and could easily pass for blown glass. All in all it's a stunning gown and suits Elle perfectly. 8. Alia Bhatt wearing Sabyasachi It's not often that you see gowns that represent a culture especially at the Met Gala but this one was a true standout. The amount of detail from head to toe and the soft colour palette just made me fall in love with the whole ensemble the second I saw it. It's tradition and culture that meets high end fashion and art and I love it.

nanami as - the manager

your manager, nanami, was pissed. pacing around his large office, growling down his phone at the poor lawyer on the other end - occasionally glancing at you as you sat quietly on the plush sofa, legs crossed as you scrolled through your phone. you weren’t happy though, scrolling through comments on your most recent posts. hate from insecure people who had nothing better to do with their lives was bearable - but now you had stalkers? these creepy ass guys who were constantly harassing you, threatening you, it was scary to say the least. you heard him slam the phone done onto the table, breathing slightly laboured in the midst of his anger. “i’ve dealt with those fuckers, they won’t bother you again sweetheart.” you smiled, it always calms him down whenever he sees your pretty smile. walking over to him, you hold his face in your hands, slowly leaning in to press a kiss on his soft lips, a hand running sensually down his broad chest over his dress shirt. “you always work so hard for me, babe. i think you deserve some lovin’ right now. just relax, ok?” having your man as your manager definitely comes with some perks, doesn’t it.

toji as - the bodyguard 

you loved attending events, getting to dress up with a team triple the size that you usually have was always such an experience. this time, the met gala was tomorrow and you couldn’t have been more excited. it was your third year in a row and each year your looks get better and better. this year, though? not even mystic meg could’ve predicted how utterly shit getting ready this year could’ve been. your dress, specially made for you by iris van herpen, was in ruins. they clearly didn’t do background checks on the people they had in your crew because he definitely wouldn’t have made it through in that case. a cute little intern, constantly singing praises of you, to your face at least. but he was plotting - coincidentally being placed in charge of taking care of your dress, and coincidentally blaming the heat gun for looking a little too much like a steamer. you were livid, and toji, your bodyguard, hated seeing you upset. he swore a zero tolerance policy for anyone who fucks with his little pop star, and that intern found out the hard way. you knew toji had some…unorthodox ways of dealing with things - not even phased when he comes back to you with dried blood staining his knuckles. only offering you a sexy grin and his arm, walking you back to the car to go pick up your new dress - “can’t wait to see what else they made ya princess, yer gonna be the most stunnin’ girl there.” 

geto as - the husband

geto made it very clear how much he hated going to these shows. he was only there for you, ignoring all the interviewers unless you were right there beside him, rejecting people left and right cause can they not see the goddess clinging onto his arm? but he did have to admit, he was a little excited this time around. a lot, actually, but if you knew that - he’d be at every award show from here on out. you’d been nominated for a grammy, artist of the year, and he was so, so proud of you. he held your hand tightly as they read out the nominees, thumb running along your knuckles. you always bite your lip when you were nervous, leg slightly jittery too, he couldn’t lie and say he wasn’t nervous too. the announcer pulled out the card, pausing for dramatic effect, before reading out - “and the grammy goes to…y/n! congratulations!” geto’s eyes widen as screams erupted from the crowd, standing up as he smiles brightly at you, kissing you deeply. your celebrity friends congratulating you as you walked passed, making sure to drag geto on stage with you as you made your speech. he knew you would win, obviously, that’s why he was so prepared. booking the most extravagant restaurant he could find, choosing a private room for the two of you to dine alone - and so no one disturbed you both when he was showing you just how proud of you he really was.

choso as - the fan

choso loved his job. working at the bar where celebs came to get absolutely wasted, he had so much shit to talk about after work. but what he didn’t expect was to see his favourite singer, you, actually walk in that night. it wasn’t a secret that choso was quite literally obsessed with you, always asking if anyone saw you at the bar when he wasn’t working, and if they did - get him an autograph or even a little shout out video. he would listen to your music on the way to work, scrolling through your instagram and taking screenshots of pics that could be potential new wallpapers. he thought you were the most beautiful thing on earth, even saving himself just in case he ever got a chance to be with you for even one night. wishes surely do come true, he couldn’t even find it in him to respond as he stared at your glossy lips, you were asking to buy a drink but he was only thinking about leaning over to bar and kissing you until you couldn’t breathe. “d-drink? oh, sorry, n-no problem!” he made a mental note of your drink, making sure it was the best you’ve ever had. he paused as you pulled out your card, stammering as he waved his hands frantically. “wait! it’s-it’s on the house. i’m a…i really like your music, it’s the least i can do.” you couldn’t help but giggle, he was cute, very cute. you didn’t point out that you can see your face on his home screen, only leaning across the bar to get closer. “you’re too sweet, but please, let me do something for you in return. it’s the least i can do.” he looks dumbfounded, opening and closing his mouth before saying, “j-just an autograph and a picture would do, if that’s ok.” 

he changed his wallpaper that same night, you on your knees slobbering over his virgin cock. he couldn’t wait to see you again, trailing a finger over the autograph you gave him, your number written right underneath. saving himself for you was so worth it.

hi everyone, i'm STUPID and got so distracted with life stuff that i forgot to post ANY of the art i did for the @d20zinejam this year so uhhh let's do that like 2 months late shall we?

first up, i drew a hella funky antiope jones for the 2 bling 2 bing zine! compared to last year's sam which was almost entirely based off of one iris van herpen couture dress, i wanted to go for a more trendy athleisure look. very quickly i got into the idea of bright blocks of primary color, as well as giving the piece an almost editorial vibe like antiope's actually posing for a magazine shoot. also i love her stupid looking sneakers.

You asked about wizarding fashion which is something that lives rent free in my mind at all times so pls excuse the wordvomit

I always imagined it as a very mixed thing. Muggleborns would keep up at least a little with modern muggle fashion for whenever they are visiting family etc so there are probably (muggleborn) tailors who incorporate necklines, sleeves/shoulders/silhouettes that match current or recent muggle fashion. I can imagine these being popular with halfbloods too.

For more .. conservative (racist) wizards and witches it is possible that fashion developed completely seperately from muggle influences. Or even as a direct opposite of muggle influences. They could have seen a new trend come up with muggleborns and decide they want the exact opposite.

I do imagine that some purebloods would dress in clothing more like the boring robes, but that fabrics and embroidery etc could spice it up (moving embroidered birds etc). It's also possible that they have very different ideas on what silhouettes are desirable and they might use boning/petticoats/crinoline/shoulderpads/etc mixed with magic to achieve shapes muggles would never be able to achieve.

Another route is going completely magic oriented and then I imagine Iris van Herpen type styles with movement and floating bits etc

I hope this was somewhat understandable whoops

(I also imagine that Hogwarts uniform Is the really boring plain sword in the stone robes and everyone no matter their background hates them cause they're so outdated and stupid looking)

I love the idea of Iris van Herpen inspired robes!

Oddly enough, I never considered embroidery that’s, like, enchanted to move. There are so many things magic could do with clothing. This idea reminds me a bit of the rejected concept of Elsa’s live fur coat in Frozen.

This is making me realize how uncreative I’ve been thinking about wizard robes—and ALSO. So many missed opportunities in the HP films to really play with this concept.

Also, also. Hogwarts robes are, to me, definitely the Sword in the Stone type. Very much NOT cute. There’s an ancient post about this that I could probably dig up, but if you know Tealin’s art from the early 2000s, that’s what I think the Hogwarts uniform probably looks like, at least in canon.

This gown's transition from a fitted top to dimensional, billowing layers of skirt and sleeve, immediately reminded me of the concept "rising from the sea," an homage to the people of watatsumi island who's ancestors climbed out of the depths of the dark sea, from enkanomiya to the surface

The shoes from alexander mcqueen’s 2010 collection were chosen for it’s skeletal design as a nod to the remains of watatsumi’s god, the great serpent orobashi, who sacrificed itself to spare its people, and was ultimately slain by the raiden shogun.

I wanted to keep hair and makeup relatively simple since the gown is already so dynamic. The 3d printed accessories are seemingly delicate, but with an edge, not unlike kokomi herself, whose true skills lie in the art of war.

a/n: completely self indulgent, but I'm combining by love for genshin with my love of fashion! I wanted to create met gala-esque looks inspired by genshin characters because I think there's so much to explore

Iris Van Herpen - Artist Research

Iris Van Herpen is a Dutch Designer who pushes the boundaries in Fashion.Creating these hypnotic garments she uses 3D printing and transparent fabric and her high level of craftsmanship.

I take inspiration with many of her collections and ‘sensory seas’ being one of the three. With taking ideas from animals of the deep she was able to create these garments with beautiful colour palettes and silhouette.

‘Roots of Rebirth ‘ focuses on nature itself and I absolutely adore with the warm colour palette in this collection and her use of organza silk has got me very interested to where I would love to work with that type of fabric

‘Syntopia’, intertwining relationships between the organic and inorganic. Again with herpen using organza i was definitely sold into using that fabric into my own experiments.Birds were her main source of inspiration by collaborating with Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta they provided a glass bird for the inorganic aspect of the collection.

I am very excited to use Herpen as one of my artist research as this designer was able to push boundaries and created her collection that has never been done before and having her clothes of the catwalk and seeing how it moves is so mesmerising and with my project that an aspect that I want to take and use that to my advantage.

Hey gang...it's been a while...again...

There are some 31,000 of you following this blog and so I feel like I owe you some sort of explanation for my lack of posting.

In short, it's getting really hard for me to post. Vogue now uses a paywall for their photos, I don't really have the resources to make original content, and quite frankly my life has been hella busy.

This blog has been a part of my life SINCE MIDDLE SCHOOL! Together, we have gone through my high school graduation, university, Covid, finishing university, and being out in the real world. I don't talk a whole bunch about myself but maybe I should:

Hi! My name is Alexa. I'm based in Calgary, Canada. I am a writer and an actor. I'm literally in the middle of a run for my first-ever self-produced show that I'm really proud of.

I have Depression and Generalized Anxiety Disorder. I take meds and they help me a lot. I'm not ashamed of any of this.

I have a degree in Drama with a minor in Women's Studies (a.k.a Gender and Sexuality Studies) and I would like to get my master's one day.

I love Iris Van Herpen and think that Zuhair Murad is overrated as all hell.

I enjoy running this blog and it's been a part of my life for a really long time but it's getting harder and harder to prioritize this blog over everything else in my life. This is due to time restraints, barriers to accessing content to post, and the little to no money I make from this blog. I'm not asking for money...I'd love some but hey...don't we all. I'm certainly not the one who needs it the most.

So what happens now?

I don't know. I'm not shutting down the blog any time soon. I just might become really sporadic about when I post.

I’m so happy you asked this though. I loved this so much though I actually might write fanfic lol.

Okay since I’m so indecisive I split this into sections by area and period (HOTD and GOT) and included some reasons as to why.

Without further ado:

North, Dance of the Dragons Era:

I was born in the Alaska aka the Winterfell of America so I had to start here.

In my imagination, my Northern house would be associated with magic and cannibalism and is one of the reasons why the North is stereotyped as ‘feral’ despite us originating in the Vale (similar to the Manderlys). Since my irl family’s business is blue, assume all of my Houses’ colors are also blue. The dress is low cut with lace over my bosom as it is warmer in KL, however fur is a sign of wealth so I would have my dress lined with it. My dress has Northern plants embroidered in silver and purple and a cutout to show some beading, again to show off my wealth. The Schiaparelli inspired buttons have eyes and a pair of lips sort of playing with the rumors of cannibalism and the earrings are based in the crying Weirwood trees. I’ve got chains with charms to protect me at the capital. I like the idea that the North is slower to accept being part of Westeros despite being a good few monarchs into Targaryen rule so they are still clinging onto pieces of life before the Seven Kingdoms.

Dorne

Unfortunately all my drawings of me in Dorne inspired wear did not turn out the way I wanted but I wanted to include Westeros’s token queer POC so I pulled out some couture instead. My Dornish house would grow wine and be close to Highgarden (because for the life of me, I cannot figure out where they can grow their famous wine, wiki didn’t mention any vineyards). I would wear a dress similar to the left to resemble the rivers that water our land. Dornish wine is one of our land’s prides so while it’s not a typical orange or gold, I am showing country pride in a foreign land with a rocky history. I did consider wearing orange/red Iris Van Herpen gowns that resemble desert mirages I it couldn’t add pics to my response. The blue also has a kinder, peaceful appearance. The right pic has the jewelry I would wear, lots of gold that emphasizes the figure with stacks of gems from abroad to show the wealth from trade. It also resembles armor so while I am at KL for peaceful reasons (which would lead the way for Dorne to being part of the Seven Kingdoms), I am on guard given our recent wars. However my accessories only armor, not weapons to resemble Dorne’s self defense. It also resembles Criston Cole’s armor, connecting me to the only Dornish member at court. Similar to the response of my Northern outfit, the colorful, sheer, and figure hugging dresses would reaffirm that Dornish stereotypes are true.

Essos

My family is from the Philippines so this is my take on fantasy!Philippines inspired by the limited resources I could find on their fashion history. This country is south of Yi Ti and is the center of sea trade in South Essos. The dress prints are inspired by batok tattoos (famously done by the legendary Apo Whang Od). The face paint is inspired by Yakan traditional face paint. The headdress is inspired by the Filipino sun on the flag. In this fantasy world I am allowed an empire waist dress with a flowing cape. Most of the fabrics are light and breathable because of the humid air and that translates to KL’s summer weather.

ASOIAF era:

North

Winter is nearing so I am all bundled up, even if I’m in KL. My house slowly shed its cannibal rumors through ancestor’s noble accomplishments so there are less references to them. The only visible reference that I wear is a Victorian inspired painted broach with my lover’s eye on it. This broach does encourage the magic-wielding rumors though. We have moved from being like Boltons to being like the Manderlys. Since it’s closer to winter, I don’t embroider my dress to conserve thread but my new dresses with flashy colors and beads as well as my fur hat with beads from trading with Essos do still signify my wealth.

Dorne

While I was a child during Robert’s Rebellion, I grew up hearing stories of Elia Martell. When I arrive at KL I have a golden spine similar to what she wore after the tourney at Harrenhal. I imagine it became a fashion statement in Dorne and I am carrying it to the capital to subtly show the court my alliance. Outside of the Martell family, Elia sort of achieves sainthood. She lived a tragic life and is (for better or worse) now on an pedestal for Dorne to project their feelings about the rest of Westeros. Since my family grows grape vines for wine, my dress would be wine red rather than black. The fire dress is more a show of my allegiance to House Martell and the mourning of Elia (and later Oberyn) as well as a sign that the Targaryens will return. It’s also got metals and thorn-like edges so no member of the capital would think to go near me. Gone are the softer, flowy fabrics and jewelry of my peacemaking ‘ancestor’. Now I am sharp, dark, and full of ancestral vengeance.

Essos

This is inspired by Michelle Dee’s Miss Philippines dress inspired by batok tattoos. I couldn’t decide which one I liked better so I included both. My face is less painted due to changing trends. (However boobs are and will continue to be an important part of my outfit lol) In addition there are fewer patterns on the dress. It is more structured and has different types of fabrics though. This includes an early development of fishnets which will reference my House’s wealth attributed to fishing and sailing.

I’m probably forgetting a few details but I’ve definitely rambled enough. I hope this was as fun for you to read as it was fun for me to draw and write!

fav entrance look so far is myx because the sailor moon is adorably cute. i like versex's too, and angel's! maybe because they were revealed first lol? looking at the others... i get yudipota is going for an iris van herpen type look but the garment looks like it's made from styrofoam or something so i just cant immerse myself in it? jquinn's is the worst i prommy im not a hater but why the bodysuit with randomly stuck on silver cutouts...

zymba and maxie were disappointingly basic for such great promo looks idk... however khianna's cosplay is insanely cunty. i think her marina-like mug is throwing me off rn
