i have made some progress, yeah. there's a lot of stylistic variations, but here's what's been most helpful to me :)

0. a lot of these mention speed - if you get too caught on something, it's likely to sap your motivation. also, i use frame-by-frame, not rigging, so some of these might not be helpful if you use rigging.

1. learn to accept mistakes.

perfectionism will slow you down. it's a little each frame, but that *adds up*. in a few second long animation, it may be fine. but if you're going for 15+ seconds, even into minutes, that can cost you hours to days to even months of progress, depending on the length. learn to accept minor mistakes, if you haven't already. you can always fix them later.

2. you dont have to redraw every single frame.

first, you can cut up an individual frame and move the parts of it. i draw characters art, and i cut up different bits of the arm when i wanna move it. second, you can warp a frame - stretch it, slant it, squish it, lots of things. you can also slide them around on the screen. third, you can reuse a frame. that's one you have to experiment with a bit, seeing where it's helpful for you and where it isn't.

3. do one thing at a time.

if you've just sketched a frame, dont move onto lining it, sketch the next one. if you get bored with one step but still wanna work on the animation, that's when you switch to the next. getting into a rhythem can help you enjoy the work more and let it go by faster.

4. stretch!

if you wanna animate, you have to take care of your body. it's fairly easy to find stretches online, look up "stretches for artists/animators" or "stretches to avoid carpel tunnel", and walk around a couple minutes every hour you've been seated. if you don't, that strain will add up, and you can cause or worsen chronic pain in yourself.

5. check your progress every so often.

if you ever wanna see your current progress, go for it! it can help you stay motivated and show you want you like and dislike about your animation so far. to do this, put in a few frames of your animation and time them properly. put them together like they should be in the final piece. watch this back whenever you like :) it's a great way to give yourself a little reward for all your hard work!

6. watch videos on animation from other artists.

plenty of people share their tips. i've learned a lot by going on youtube and searching "animaton tips". you can also play this in the background while you animate, if you'd like. i always like having something to listen to, myself, and it can help me a lot to have it be related to the art i'm making.

i reccomend doodley and lavendertowne, personally :)

7. animate for you.

remember, if there's anything you don't wanna do, you don't have to. make what you enjoy making, not just what you think others would wanna see. if you end up sharing your animations, which you don't have to do, you will find your audience. do what you enjoy, skill will come to you along the way. :)

this is really just a slightly related rant, but also..im afraid i seem a bit self-centered at times becuz, i dont draw my friends characters AS much or share about them and yet im here so happy whenever they draw for me and you know.. INVOLVE themselves into my ocs! i cant help but be a bit guilty that... im too involved with my own ocs..? like its weird to explain this feeling. 😭 and i frankly dont want to get TOO much into it just cuz this is a tumblr for silly demon ocs of mairuma not a ranting/personal acc lol but. it HAS happened where i am too involved with my fandom oc and it gets 'popular' and then someone 'calls me out' for pushing my ocs into others and that. kinda killed it yk? like i dont want to push devlin either onto everyones faces but im also scared that it gives off that its all i talk about (which is kinda true? idk) 😭 like eventually i just melted away from it a bit, to. prevent what has happened before. i rarely draw that other fandom oc becuz of that. and like i said, i love devlin, i dont want that to happen. ive tried to make a fursona several times but i just cant figure out an "ideal me". i dont know how id present myself if i could do anything i wanted?? i just dont have a clear image of how i wish i looked. and either way i wouldnt wanna be an anthropomorphic animal even though i love drawing them. id rather just be some floating mass of ethereal pink glitter (in a masc way)

i have no problem drawing myself in a cartoony style cause im portraying how i look irl. but if i had to make a fursona id be stumped on the very first step of having to choose which animal id be. i dont really identify with any type of animal 😭

whenever i wanna look different its related to how other ppl currently perceive me, and how i want them to perceive me instead. if theres no mandatory audience to make conclusions abt my personality, gender, etc based on my looks, then whats the point of wanting to look like anything. i dont experience life in third person. even if my whole body changed dramatically, i would still exist in it in first person just like i did previously. my feelings would still be the same. my experience of life would be the same. the only thing that would change would be how others would treat me. and if i would be accepted and appreciated regardless of my looks, then it doesnt matter how i look. in which case, id prefer not to have a perceivable body in the first place.

its strongly affected by my being agender, bc when i first tried to make a fursona, i couldnt even finish a sketch to decide if i liked it or not, bc i couldnt get past things like "do i draw my body w all its lumpy gendered parts, or do i lean towards neutered androgyny? do i reflect reality, and thus succumb to having ppl speculate what my assigned sex is, or do i remove them in favor of succumbing to the pressure of how ppl characterize androgyny and genderlessness? why do my lumps have to be gendered in a magical world where animals are people? how do i portray my inner lack of gender with a body on which the existence AND non-existence of certain parts are inherently gendered?"

the answer is that its easier to simply not do it at all. so i exist in the furry community as nothing but disembodied text lol. i use my OC as my avatar etc, which makes ppl assume she's my fursona, which kinda sucks bc im the Opposite of her, but its somehow peaceful to use her as a facade instead of myself.

and yes, during my 7+ yrs of mild popularity in the furry community, ppl HAVE speculated on my assigned sex, and demanded to know it. mostly they assume im a trans woman, bc my favorite oc is one. its soothing to have this one place where i can be vague abt it, so i guess ill never have a fursona lol

so the thing here is that you can make it sound as bad as you want. i understand why you find it gross, that’s not an unpopular opinion. i definitely also get weirded out by underage stuff and try to avoid it whenever i see it.

i’ve written some fics before with abusive and dub-con elements in it. i personally don’t find an issue with that. i see it more as a plot element. it’s not glorified and it’s easy to see in the story that it’s presented as like— hey, this is fucked up that the character is doing this. but it’s also a way to expand on characterization. not all characters are morally correct, just like real life people aren’t. not all relationships are healthy, and as a writer, it’s interesting to explore those elements while having the full understanding that it’s wrong in real life. the thing is that it’s a story, and— man, i don’t even know how to phrase this, really. idk. i am trying so hard to be respectful but if you’re expecting all fictional relationships to be 100% healthy i don’t know what to say. fiction exists for a reason.

as for like, zoo/necrophilia, trust me, i think that’s weird too lol. people are into some fucked up stuff! as long as they can contain their interests to fiction that i am 100% free to scroll past and ignore, okay. i mean, whatever. weird, but you do you. through fiction, lol.

i think part of the issue here is assuming that all media with harmful elements immediately glorifies said elements, which i don’t think is really the case (other than incest, which i will admit tends to be in a lot of media like porn, which i personally never watch bc it grosses me out lol). but a lot of the stuff i come across clearly presents it as like, hey, this is fucked up, but it’s being written into the story to show how fucked up these characters are, or the author is working through personal trauma and that’s a way for them to vent. i will admit tho! there is definitely stuff out there that glorifies it. i don’t agree with that, but i also hope that people have the sense to understand that fictional glorification doesn’t translate to real life… unfortunately i understand that not everyone does. i wish they would tho 😅

i will admit i am mostly focusing on written fiction when i say all this, mainly bc i don’t tend to look at a lot of art (probably my own weird hangups around sexual stuff, idk, i don’t wanna see it but i can read abt it). but from what i know, most of that art is very stylized, to the point that like… i mean, real people don’t look like anime characters, yknow? i know for a fact that drawing porn of real life kids is illegal, and on that i 100% agree that it’s fucked up, but anime style art doesn’t have that same basis in reality, if that makes sense. altho take this paragraph with a grain of salt, i fully admit i don’t have a solid opinion on “”problematic”” art.

SPOILERS FOR MS. MARVEL

ok guys i expected this show to be pretty average.. nope. it was great. just 1 episode in and its already one of my favorite marvel shows. heres a bit of my thoughts on it -its so cool to see more representation. im not Muslim or Pakistani so i cant say anything about those aspects (tho im sure u could find stuff about it online from those more knowledgeable) other than its great to see other cultures and languages in a production like this. and like MoonKight they had what i assume to be cultural music, which was also rlly cool -ITS SO RELATABLE! LIKE SKDFJSGS;, i dont have the words. the fact that she daydreams all day about being a superhero, doodles during class, is a literal fangirl, and has parents who doesnt understand what she likes, is. so. relatable. this is the most ive ever seen myself in a marvel character, which is kinda the point of the show. but still. i was watching her talk about making her cosplay and looking at fanart and its just, i do those things. i have marvel shirts and dream about going to cons. the amount of, just feeling, i felt when her mom completely shut down her plan to go to AvengerCon is just, immense. like wow, so many ppls parents judge their kids for the things they like. the scene where Kamala tried to put something around her hips after her mom told her the outfit was too skimpy or tight (without even seeing it i might add) was something i just immediately felt. she didnt even need to monologue about why she felt the need to do it, i could instantly understand based on her action and expression. i cant put into words how this feels like a show that just gets us -her friendship with Bruno (im still not over that song why would u do this to me Disney). its so accurate to how friendship is and its so wholesome to watch. Kamala feeling out of place in school and being quite to meeting with Bruno and talking about the con? thats great, thats the friendships i wanna see. there was no romance, tho there may be based on the look they shared on the roof, but im surprisingly open to it. i usually never like romance in action based shows but they understand each other so well. their struggles and dreams, like even if their love is just platonic its still there. and i love to watch it (not to mention its the literal perfect superhero partner dynamic, the one who fights and the one in the chair) -the directing. ive had a lot of problems with Disney directing as of late (cough cough Boba Fett) but marvel shows have always been fine. WandaVision was rlly unique in its idea, so was Hawkeye, but none have stood out in just plain directing so far. until this. theres no weird shaky camera for no reason, no weird up close face shots (im looking at u The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), nothing like that. just good camera work and going 100% with the theme. the drawings coming to life on the walls and their texts becoming signs and Kamala's planning being animated/drawn. its like spider-verse and i love it. it seems so true to her character and the vibe of the show. reminds me of a movie i think exists where some guy in high school has the ability to make the things he draws real, but im not sure if i just made that up lol -references. some ppl call them easter eggs but either way their great. like me tell u i was screaming whenever i saw something from the greater mcu. even before the show started i noticed how MoonKight is now in the intro logo. there was a lot but some things i remember r the og captain america song at the con, the drawing mentioning his ass, also at the con, the trust a bro truck and original ms. marvel design as art during the end credits. im sure there was more and im kinda disappointed im not remembering them after just watching it -the mysteries. whyd the bracelet (idk if thats what its called but for now bracelet) give her powers? who r the ppl in the end scene (i dont think any other marvel show has had an end scene first ep)? will her old friend refriend her? OMG SHE STILL HAS THE POWER TO EXTEND HER LIMBS?? BUT NOW ITS LIKE CRYSTALS???

And honestly my best tip would be to watch expressive cartoons! ive always loved animation and ive always been TRANSFIXED by EXPRESSIVE animation.

These shows are good examples even if the screencaps I got on short notice aren't the craziest they get by a long shot.

for more modern stuff, if you can find it on social media/often reuploaded to youtube, you can usually hunt down some storyboards or special expression notes for production, which Ive also been pouring over habitually for years

I dont know that Ive ever really drawn directly from reference to try to get a feel for these things, but really eye-catching expressions just tend to stick in my mind like glue, and I will be itching to emulate them whenever I can!

I used to literally just collect screenshots of expressions I liked from various cartoons, back when I pirated more.

Also, I just have... TONS of practice. I picked up drawing as a coping mechanism for Intensified Adhd Emotions of any kind when I was realy young, so basically anytime I FEEL, I try to draw the feeling as a knee jerk reaction. It's a fun exercise! I do it a lot when chatting with other people, or listening in class
