I made a compass for games where you play as Dads! Responsibility is for how responsible are they for the plot or end of the game, effect is how much changed due to their actions.

Explanations /descriptions below.

Top left is Joel Miller from The Last of Us. The end of the game and the events of 2 can be tied to his actions, but it's unclear how much over all changed due to his actions.

Top right is Kratos from God of War (2018). He's destroyed two pantheon so high effects. Baldur did pick a fight with him to kick off Norse stuff, but many actions before and after that are due to his choices.

Bottom left is Kiryu from Yakuza. I'll admit I'm not super sold, but it's low responsibility as he keeps trying to retire but stuff happens and low effects as the plots mostly revolve around Japanese criminal politics.

Bottom right is Dad!NieR. He was mostly tricked or goaded into his actions (you find out towards the end of the game how the entire society was set up mostly just for the plot to happen, though parts got away from everyone.) But it also cements the destruction of basically every sapient being so... high effects.

tsv episodes 24-27

loved 24. i mean it's a Carpenter centric episode so of course it slaps, and fascinating to see her really confront the shit she has done and how she rationalised it at the time. i think one thing this show does exceptionally well is show how people don't have to be an anime psycho to commit violence - how with the right social pressures you could totally become someone who does the monthly murder before dinner. the setup reminds me of that point in Exordia where Anna goes into hell. time loop lotus flower dream stuff can go a few ways, but these cruel variants are especially interesting. one thing that wasn't entirely clear was the old man and little girl who Carpenter apparently left behind - possibly this is foreshadowing? unless they mean the pox monk and the girl who can't see other people but i don't think so. besides Nana Glass there was another voice of Carpenter's guilt that I didn't recognise, and maybe this is related to whatever is being foreshadowed.

episode 25... was kind of a moving the pieces around episode. the 'snuff gods' were cute - it's interesting to see what the line is for what people consider a truly socially unacceptable god in this setting after we've seen what they'll rationalise. i honestly don't get that much out of the hunter duo - they're not terrible characters but they don't feel like they have the depth of our MCs. i kind of expect at least one of them to get killed off in the finale. but while it was good to see Carpenter and Faulkner reunited, it was less emotional themes and more action.

episodes 26 and 27 though - hoo boy. paige and her dad have a fascinating dynamic, and this season it feels like the real thematic meat lies with this attempt to create a parasitic god that steals martyrs.

and honestly, what a way to make the classic redemption arc => immediate heroic sacrifice beat fresh and sharp again. the white crocus flower imagery is so damn nier, can't get enough of white flowers that symbolise death in fiction lol.

but I'm even more fascinated by the idea that this god punishes all acts of predation, even a whale consuming krill. the inherent violence of animal life was probably not considered in scope. we already have themes of "pollution" by the effects of the war and the churning of gods, and this area seems well on its way to becoming another spiritual chernobyl.

the prisoner, Esther, was also really well handled. though she's a victim of this regime, she still has agency, and a real no bullshit attitude about her situation and the options. although she only appears briefly, she makes a very strong impression.

we're on to the rapid apocalyptic escalation now. this is an insanely good story, just the kind that i love - tightly plotted, thematically sharp, juicy with its imagery. can't get enough of it.

my favorite favorite favorite part about the singed = corin reveck thing is the fucking nier shadowlord of it all. the fact that it would mean singed had a hand in the creation of not one, but *two* characters whose stories are about doing good or trying to do good and losing (or risking losing) their humanity in the process.

orianna not giving two shits if going down to zaun might hurt her. not regretting it one bit, just immediately working her ass off to save her own life, and then just giving her dying dad the last piece of her physical humanity —her HEART — whether he wanted it or not.

viktor not giving a damn about piltover, about jayce, going fuck it all even if it might hurt. going through with the glorious evolution, turning himself into a fucking machine — to save himself, to help others. the fact that he was SO READY to throw in the towel and let himself die after what happened to sky.

it's the idea that SINGED played a pivotal role in these two's formative years — singed, as in the guy who'd burn a person's home to the ground and kill their mother just so he could experiment on them. the guy who'd torture his test subjects half to death if they didn't cooperate. the guy willing to keep a dying animal on excruciating life support just for his own research. it's the fact that he can do, has done, and will continue to do all these horrible things with not even a *shred* of remorse — and also still pick up a child's lost toy and return it to them, asking with genuine interest, "you built this? why aren't you playing with the others?"

i really don't know how to articulate this without going in circles, but like. the fact that he's only in it for himself is EVERYTHING. how people just keep going to him for help and he is NOTHING but unequivocally honest. he'll do the thing. he'll give you the drug, or save your dying daughter, or whatever the hell else. he'll warn them, and then leave them to make their own decision.

"Sometimes death is a mercy," he warns Silco. Silco says back, "She can take it," so alright. If you say so. Not my problem.

"I must warn you, if you take this path, they will despise you. Love and legacy are the sacrifices we make for progress. It's why I parted ways with Heimerdinger."

"Jayce will understand," Viktor says.

Singed doesn't even rebuke him, put him down, nothing. Just a simple, "Perhaps." An, "Eh, maybe. Only one way to find out ig"

(He doesn't even make Viktor pay him back, btw. He doesn't say a thing about him running away all those years ago. Unless for some fucking reason that was omitted, but i'm choosing to take s1 as-is here, disregarding s2 entirely)

He DOESN'T CARE about anyone else, is the thing. He could not give any less of a shit beyond whatever he or they have obligated to each other. He doesn't hold Viktor running away against him. He doesn't fight back against silco holding a fucking knife to his neck beyond glancing between him and it and just plainly answering his questions. (He has his pinkie out when holding stuff like bottles and i think that's the funniest piltie shit ever)

So like it makes PERFECT SENSE and also NO SENSE that he's significantly responsible for possibly the most moral Piltover champion (Orianna) and the most moral 'bad guy' from Zaun (Viktor). Both of whom are humans-turned-machines, while — possible chem augments aside — he himself is still pretty much entirely human. The fact that he's the most inhumane among the three of them.

It's like Vik and Ori took after the 'going all the way to the ends of the earth for your goal' part of him, the 'i am well aware of the circumstances and have decided fuck it we ball' part of him, and disregarded his apathy entirely. acting *against* it, sometimes, going behind his back to help a chemical disaster in zaun, even if he's already forbidden it. shutting down all of your own efforts to save your life after it kills someone who isn't you.

giving him your heart, even if he quite possibly didn't want it. Not even giving him room to make a choice, never talking to him about it, never bringing it up. Ori realizes there's no other option and just. Does It.

Nier had sat at the dinner table dozens of times with tears that welled in his eyes hidden behind the food he ate. Dozens of times he had held them back, not for the purpose of pride, but in an effort to choke back the last shred of stability that held his heart together.

When his father had passed, he sat at the table and sobbed himself sick, but when it had been his mother, he'd held the tears back in much the same way as he did now.

It was the familiarity of it, of peering at Kijin and Tykha through the flickering flame of a candle, too similar to that decade old image of his parents.

Tykha did not cut the same imposing figure that his father had and Kijin was far too slender and slight to. Neither laughed like his mother, but both turned to check in on him, to include him even when they paused to appreciate one another.

The burn of his eyes and the blur of his vision proved a hard enough battle, but the way his breath shook when he loosed it was the first sure sign of his loss. He felt two pairs of eyes on him, but didn't dare turn his attention away from the food, afraid that the first tear would fall.

"Nier?"

X'kijin's voice was heard first, though he could tell by D'tykha's hushed whispers that there was a conversation in the silence that followed as X'kijin quietly got up and excused himself, pulled away his and D'tykha's empty plates to clean them in the kitchen.

Which, of course... left Nier to sit there with D'tykha, well into the dinner that X'kijin had expertly crafted for them as he had been doing for some time, when the days were kind to them.

X'kijin, he could dodge, but D'tykha, who had come into his life shortly after his mother passed, it proved impossible.

"I, uh..."

His fingers drummed against the plate, the motion useless in figuring out what to say, how to explain or stifle that impossible loss.

"It was a lot like with mom and dad, seeing the two of you. You're not all that alike, but just..."

The imagery, the way that they sat there, together and in love. It reminded him so much, too much of parents lost in the chaos of this godsdamned world. It reminded him of those losses, but worst of all was the terrible realization that it had been a decade now, since he'd lost them both.

"I've been with you longer now, D'tykha," he said, peered up at him through his hair from where he sat at the table. "... I've known you longer than I knew my own parents."

He'd been raised by him for longer, taken care of by him longer. Nier only wished he could hate his parents for that, that he could love D'tykha harder for it—and he did love D'tykha for it, for so many other things as well.

Nier didn't want to think about what he'd have had to do if D'tykha had not been there, if he hadn't handed him sometimes exorbitant amounts of money when Nier had struggled to scrounge up what was needed for Yonah's medicine.

What would he have done without him?

"Oh, sweetheart... come here..."

The words were easy, gentle as D'tykha pulled him into his arms—and Nier allowed it. He allowed himself that small comfort. No matter how many times D'tykha reached over and hugged him, it never seemed to be enough to quell that familiar creep of loneliness nor did it hold the feeling of failure at bay given Yonah's continued absence.

But in the safety of D'tykha's arms, he allowed himself a few tears to fall, as he so often did with him. How long had it been since anyone else had seen him cry?

... The funeral, he was sure, and the thought brought up more tears, the ones he had held down for six years after his parents' had passed, all for the sake of his sister.

All for the sake of Yonah and he had still failed her.

1. Bayonetta <- Bayonetta

I just love her, okay. She's gorgeous, she's confident, she's a witch that fights with her hair and can run 80 mph in 5in pumps. Jokes aside, I just love that her sexuality is a thing that she owns and has fun with-- and it's never used against her maliciously. (I also love her parallels to Dante my other fave). I could go on more but basically... she's truly one of a kind.

2. Akihiko Sanada <- Persona 3

My long-time beau. I RP'd him for about 8 years and met a lot of good people through that blog so I'm a little biased in how sentimental I am over him and Mitsuru. I'd add her too but I'm doing my best to be diverse here. Anyway, I just love him-- he fits all of my standards. He represents the Emperor arcana: the 'father' type. He's a control freak, he drags his guilt around by the ankle, is fiercely protective, has a little jealous streak, and is a hot-headed idiot (who is actually very smart)... And DON'T say it's because he has white hair.

3. Garnet <- Final Fantasy IX

The older I get, the more IX means to me. She has been my favorite since I was little. Not to get personal but I find her relatable: she grew up sheltered but was expected to do great things, and I am sympathetic that her mother (once kind and loving, even though we don't see it) was turned against her by forces she couldn't control. She deals with her grief more realistically than most FF heroines-- she gives into depression and self doubt but she never becomes bitter and that's something I want for myself.

4. Yuna <- Final Fantasy X

My grandma and I played all the FFs together, but the one that really made an impression was X. Yuna is my love: thematically, symbolically, and aesthetically. My sacrificial lamb who would burn herself to keep others warm. She takes her notoriety and her father's burden with grace and never shies from it even when she loses her faith in the system designed to throw her to the wolves. Also every line she has has such gravitas behind it... beautiful writing, beautiful voice acting. My forever girl.

5. Nier <- NieR

My doomed boy. I don't want to go into spoilers because Nier is more of a niche game, but I love him so much (and dadnier, too.) The moral quandary this game has... the morally grey protagonists... I love a character who loves with all his heart and would give anything for the people he loves. The side-story where it's implied he even ***** ******* for some coin was... man.

6. Kim <- Xenogears

Trying not to spoil here either it's just vague. IYKYK.

I thought about putting Elhaym here but I feel like the Zeboim era has more characterization than the main lol. Anyway. I love how he has become so cynical about the world around him, yet he is still willing to save and create life, only to find he suffers from the same affliction. As a scientist, he embodies the question: 'What makes a God?' and 'What is does it mean to be human?'. I love his story and I wish there was more.

7. Rubedo Yuriev <- Xenosaga

He's an idiot, he's a tragic figure, he's learned, he's traumatized, and his relationship with MOMO is uhhhhhh complicated. Honestly maybe I should have put Yuriev here because he's such an interesting villain. The URTVs are all squashed together for me like one big delicious smoothie anyway so.

Anyway Rubedo, your dad stared into The Abyss and it stared back and now he's insane and his fear of God and his own mortality was so strong he would use his own flesh and blood to run (and it was honestly really sexy of him) but what he never seems to grasp is that you can't run from what you can't see and sooner or later it will catch up.

8. Misato Katsuragi <- Neon Genesis Evangelion

Hi I love women with daddy issues.

I love her with Kaji. She looks for her father in him, while he's searching for his mother, but Misato, try as she may, she will never be a mother to anyone--not to Kaji, and certainly not to Shinji. There's a ton you can read into nge characters but there's something to be said about the trauma our parents force us (willing or unwillingly) to inherit, and how we hurt others as a result of that.

9. Dante <- Devil May Cry

He's so fucking stupid (affectionate). Dante Alighieri is rolling in his grave.

He's not only a boyloser but a boyfailure. He gets bullied by women and children and could probably suplex the earth. He loves his mom!!!

Anyway I love that he exudes a type of masculinity and machismo at first glance only to play the game and see he's a little fruity. I'm also a sucker for characters with duality themes that, when asked 'what makes us different?', the answer is because they chose to love-- which is not something you'd expect from a hack n slash game, inspired by resident evil in which you find new and exciting ways to kill things... yanno?

10. Kenzo Tenma <- Naoki Urasawa's Monster

I was running out of characters and was about to put Thancred or Squall but that's too many FFs so I tried to think of some anime that made an impression on me and Tenma came to me. We needed another Liam O'Brien rep here, clearly.

Anyway read/watch Monster if you haven't, it's an amazing mature series that barely feels like an anime.

Again, the themes of duality here-- who embraced life and who would rather take it? If Johan represents the inherent evil in the world, and man's propensity for it, then Tenma represents all that is good. He's just so tragic. The moment he finally stands up for himself he's punished for it, then when pushed to his limit, saves the life of a little boy only to be cursed for it. Even through everything he never gives up on people, and every life he touches is changed for the better. And that ending... oh man.

i entirely forgot about how funny the setup to emil was. love imagining how weird that mustve been just sitting in your fucked up scooby doo mansion and suddenly a 40 year old man is in your house thimking you were his daughters penpal boyfriend. my favorite aspect though is due to how vague the dialogue is wrt dad nier asking sebastian to keep sending letters you can interpret him asking the grown man to keep sending them instead of emil wrtiting one as either

dude does not want a boy yonahs age to be writing her letters due to the aformentioned fear he showed in originally thinking this was the case, so he'd prefer sebastian be the one and just write her formal little forgeries

and the second concept brings up a question of can he not write letters because he wasnt ever taught how due to being lab rats. or does he literally keep that blind on 24/7. and that just goea further down the rabbithole. does he sleep in that? bathe in that? i bet the poor bastard is blind by that point like how in the 2000s it was a huge problem that skaters and emos were contracting light sensitivity in one eye due to covering it with a side bang for large chunks of time over months. He probably takes the blind off and just gets pain behind his eye with all the lighth flooding in. cant write shit if the sheet of papee bounces your candle off and beams you blind like led headlights
