assigning the sanders sides my liked songs

i’ve wanted to do something similar to this for a while. i did this (kind of) with just taylor a few weeks ago but this is DIFFERENT! so basically the rules were that i had to assign EVERY song in my liked songs on spotify to one of the characters, and then i shortened the lists for brevity. the criteria wasn’t very strict so it came out,, as well as you’d expect it to. there’s also a few at the end that are pairs/groups of characters rather than just one.

‘I’m sorry Y/n, but I like someone else. We can still be friends right?’

Those words echoed painfully in your head as you saw your crush, Noh Yunah, having a conversation with Moa at a bench close by. Yunah’s eyes met yours, giving a small wave in hopes you would finally notice her after literally ghosting her messages since your confession.

You looked away with a tug at your heart, knowing that interacting with Yunah would bring you even more hurt. She was your best friend since childhood and it was heart breaking to know that you basically ruined that relationship by stupidly telling her that you had feelings for her.

“Hey, stop looking at her” Jiwoo warned, tapping her pen at your knuckles.

“Sorry” You muttered into your arm.

“And stop listening to Exile by Taylor Swift on repeat. It’s not healthy” Yunjin hissed, pausing the song on your phone and taking your earbuds off.

“Y/n, it’s gonna be okay” Chaewon softly said while running your back in slow circles.

“Easy for you to say. You and Yunjin are basically high school sweethearts”

“Not everyone has the same love story, Y/n” Yunjin said with a sigh.

“By the way guys” Jiwoo cleared her throat. “I have a partner assignment in my English unit so basically my buddy will be joining us for lunches from now on to work on our project. Is that alright?”

Everyone nodded while you continued moping.

“Sure! Who’s your partner?” Funa asked.

“Chanelle Moon. Yunjin you know her right?”

Yunjin nodded with a mouthful of tteokbokki that Chaewon fed. “That’s my bestie!!”

“She’s coming here right now, everyone behave and look presentable! Especially you” Jiwoo whacked her pen at your head, making your groan.

You sat up and looked at the direction Jiwoo gestured at.

And oh my word.

A tall girl, long hair, superbly hot smile, wearing an oversized white shirt was walking towards your table. Everything seemed to be in slow motion and imaginary sexy music was playing in the background.

“Everyone, this is Chanelle Moon. She’s also a sport major, and runs the sports club on campus. Chanelle, you already know Yunjin and Chaewon but this is Funa and Y/n” Jiwoo introduced.

“Hi, it’s nice to meet you!” Funa greeted with a wave.

“Hey” You simply said with a small smile.

Chanelle tilted her head at you. “You seem familiar…oh! You’re the girl I always see with Yunah, right?”

You wanted to die.

Jiwoo quickly pulled onto Chanelle’s sweater and whispered. “Y/n had a crush on her and confessed but got rejected. That’s why she looks like a mess”

Chanelle slowly nodded and sat beside you, setting her backpack underneath the table. “Oh I see, my bad. She doesn’t look like a mess to me though. Still very pretty” She whispered back before turning to you again.

“Nice hoodie by the way, Y/n. I love Taylor Swift” She pointed at your merch from Taylor’s last concert.

Your ears perked up like a puppy at her words. “You listen to Taylor too?!”

“Absolutely! She’s my anthem”

“No way, what’s your favourite song?”

Your friends seemed to be surprised at your sudden burst of energy as if you weren’t complaining like some crazy sad woman a few minutes ago. Yunjin leant her lips close to her girlfriend’s ear. “They’re cute together”

“Don’t ruin their moment, babe” Chaewon giggled.

“Enchanted will always be my favourite” Chanelle said, sending an awfully attractive smile to you.

And for some reason, you felt your mood get a little better.

After a few weeks and during more lunch breaks, you and Chanelle find yourselves talking more than her working on the partner project with Jiwoo. Jiwoo even had to tell you off for apparently trying to sabotage her grades but deep down, she was all on board with Yunjin, Chaewon, and Funa on the ChanY/n ship.

You were doing well in forgetting about Yunah, but it went downhill when Chanelle invited you to watch her at soccer practice that was for an upcoming sport event on campus. You forgot Yunah was part of that team and was involved in all events.

You were sat down with your friends on the bleachers while the soccer team was warming up. Yunah smiled when she spotted you within the small audience, taking a few steps towards you to finally talk after being ghosted but Chanelle beat her to it. The half American jogged your way, her smile getting impossibly wider.

“Hey Y/n! I’m so happy to see you here. Even though it’s just for my practice but still, I appreciate it a lot”

You smiled back, waving a container of fruit in her face. “Anything to support you, Chanz. Here’s some fruit I prepared for you”

She happily accepted the container with sparkling eyes and wrapped her arms around your waist for a tight hug. “Wow, all for me? You’re so sweet, thank you!”

“We’re here too you know” Chaewon grumbled with crossed arms.

“Oh thank you guys too for coming! We’re starting our practice matches now. Talk to you later!” Chanelle quickly waved and ran back to her team, popping one strawberry into her mouth.

Yunah clenched her jaw at the interaction, seeing Chanelle place the fruit container beside her water bottle. “Since when did you and Y/n start talking?”

“What’s it to you? You broke her heart” Chanelle fired back.

“She’s my best friend”

“She’s my best friend too. Don’t take it personally Yunah, I met her through Jiwoo.”

Yunah huffed and scratched her ear. “Do you like Y/n or something?”

“And why do you care?”

“Just protective of her, that’s all” Yunah shrugged that got Chanelle chuckling.

“Hey, Y/n is free to like whoever she wants. I’m just trying not to let an opportunity slide” Chanelle said and ran to the centre of the field.

The two teams got into position, Yunah and Chanelle standing by the ball, awaiting the coach’s whistle. The moment they heard the ring, the teams starting playing as the timer began.

Chanelle managed to snatch the ball from Moa and run her way down the large field, sending a big kick into the goal. She pumped her fist into the air before pointing at you.

“That’s for you, Y/n!” She yelled, sending you into a blushing mess.

“She totally likes you” Funa muttered in your ear.

“And I think I’m starting to like her too” You smiled, shaking your head at Chanelle who was now dancing to celebrate her little goal.

After a few more matches, Chanelle shot her 10th goal just before the coach blew the whistle to end the game.

“Great practice girls! Chanelle, you totally smashed it out there, very proud of you” Coach praised the half American, patting her back.

Chanelle bowed before taking her belongings and running towards you, engulfing you in another huge hug, spinning you around.

“Yah, put me down!” You laughed.

Yunah, having enough, stomped your way and yanked Chanelle away from you. “Y/n!”

“What the hell, Yunah?” You scoffed.

“Why are you talking to Chanelle? Why are you hanging out with her besides me? I’ve been texting and calling you!”

“Why does that matter to you? I just needed time off after being rejected by you!”

“I said we could still be friends!”

You sarcastically laughed at her words. “You’re making it sound like that would easily fix the hurt you caused me, you just don’t understand do you Yunah?”

“Hey, can we all calm down and talk this out like proper adults?” Chanelle stepped in the middle, placing a hand softly on Yunah’s shoulder only for it to get shoved away and a fist was thrown into her face.

“This is all your fault! If she didn’t meet you, she could still be hanging out with me!” Yunah yelled.

Chanelle got back up and tackled Yunah to the ground, sending more blows to her face.

“Chanelle stop!” Yunjin screamed, grabbing her best friend by the shoulders to fully pull her off.

You placed your palm at the centre of Chanelle’s chest. “Chanz, please. Let it go”

With a clenched jaw, Chanelle grabbed your hand and looked at Yunah one last time. “Fix yourself Yunah. I’m just trying to make Y/n happy again”

You both walked away from the field and to Chanelle’s dorm that she lived alone in. She got you to sit down on her couch while grabbing you a strawberry milk carton from her fridge. “Here. It’s an apology for what happened just then”

Accepting the beverage, you pulled Chanelle to sit next to you and lay your head on her shoulder. “You don’t need to apologise. Yunah got crazy”

“I’ve never seen her so angry. There’s no way she didn’t have feelings for you”

You shrugged. “She said she liked Minju”

“Her loss, but a win for me. I like you Y/n. Like ALOT” Chanelle said, grabbing your chin between her index and thumb.

“I think I like you too” You smiled, placing your drink onto the coffee table.

Chanelle arched a brow. “You think?”

“For a while, I’ve been hung up on Yunah and thought I’d never find anyone to move on to. After meeting you and getting close to you, I wanted to believe that I liked you because of you, not because I wanted to use you to forget about her. I’m sorry, that explanation was really bad, I’m so unsure with my words”

The taller gave that same heart twisting smile. “I hope this will help” She whispered and connected your lips softly.

You didn’t waste time in returning it, cupping the girl’s face with both hands and moving your mouths in sync. Chanelle pulled away first. “Did that work?”

“Definitely” you breathed out, leaning your foreheads together.

“I really like you Y/n”

“I really like you too, Chanz. You make me so happy”

“I’d give you the world if I could” she whispered and kissed your crown.

Your frowned when you saw the worsening bruise at the side of her eye. “Oh my god, it looks so bad”

Chanelle winced when your fingers gently brushed over it. “It’ll go away within a week. No biggie”

You rushed to grab an ice pack from her freezer and placed it over the bruise. “I’m so sorry she hit you. It’s not like Yunah”

“Is it that bad?”

You pulled the ice pack a few centimetres away to check. “It’s kinda hot actually” You said louder than intended. “Oh oops, that was supposed to stay in my mind”

Chanelle smirked and made you place the ice pack on the table. “It’s hot, is it Miss Y/n?” She taunted and made you sit on her lap.

Your face was redder than ever. It didn’t help that Chanelle was looking up at you with that stupid hot smirk of her’s. You wanted to kiss it away.

“Kiss it away then”

“I really need to stop speaking my mind” you groaned into her chest.

She brushed her fingers through your hair. “Hey Y/n, I know we kinda confessed already but I wanna ask you properly. Do you want to be my girlfriend?”

As Jake lowered you to the ground, Bob’s eyes scanned your every move. You felt your cheeks burning red and your heart was going a million miles per hour. The look on your face was one of a deer caught in headlights.

“Bob? What are you doing here?” you muttered as you walked toward him. His car parked on the other side of the street which explained why you didn’t notice him when driving into the neighborhood. 

“We need to talk. Unless you’re too busy.” He breathed out as he glared at Jake. You watch his fists ball up as Jake comes to stand behind you. 

“What is there to talk about Bob?” You ask coyly. 

His blue eyes piercing through yours so harshly make you feel small. Then he flickers his eyes to Jake with such hatred that you could only guess he already knows somethings up. 

And it took you five whole minutes

“You know I begged to end my assignment early to come back to you?” He says, shaking his head. “I’ve asked about you for weeks since you can’t bother to respond to my calls. Just to come back and find you shacking up with fucking Hangman.” 

His fists balling up as your jaw tenses when he mentions Jake. Your mind is going at a million miles an hour. Unable to form a coherent thought before Bob speaks again.

“Nothing? Really, Peach? It hasn’t even been two months.” He spat and then raised his finger to point at Jake as he growled “And you, I thought you were better than that. I defended you to Rooster when you blabbed about his father and the second I’m gone you steal my girlfriend?”

“BOB! STOP! GET OFF OF HIM!” you yelled as him and Jake were trading punches now on the ground. “PLEASE STOP!” you begged as you tried to pull them away which resulted in someone’s fist connecting with your cheek. 

You yelped in pain as your hand rose to your throbbing cheek and both men stopped fighting and turned to look at you with concern. “Are you alright?” said Jake as he cupped your face and examined your cheek. “I’m fine” you whispered, pushing his hands off your face and stepping back.

“Both of you need to leave,”  you snapped as you headed for the front door. Bob and Jake on your tail as you grabbed for your keys. 

“I’m so sorry Peach, please hear me out. Please” begged Bob who was standing right behind you as you unlocked the door. Turning around you eyed his bloody face, noticing Jake standing not too far behind him with a bloody nose. “I think you’ve talked enough today Bob.” You say as his eyes plead for you to let him in and talk. “Y/N please” he begged, it was the first time he used your name in a long time. 

Jake watched you both intently. Waiting to see what you’d do. You wanted so badly to ice your cheek that would be for sure bruised by the end of the day. But neither men budged as you looked between them.

“You have 5 minutes. No more. Now go inside and clean your face,” you told Bob exasperated at the position you were now in. He nodded and you stepped aside to let him in. Jake’s eyes watching in disbelief. 

You stepped outside and shut the front door behind you as you made your way to where Jake was standing. “Listen, I need to talk to him. I don’t want things to get worse. I’ll call you, I promise.” you whispered, grabbing hold of his hand to get him to look at you. “I don’t think you should talk to him, Peach. All he’ll do is hurt you.” he replied harshly. “That’s not for you to decide, Jake.” you uttered as he let go of your hand.

 His head shaking in disappointment as he turned away from you and walked to his truck. You walked backwards towards your door, watching him peel out of the driveway and then you turned around to reach for the doorknob only to find Bob standing in front of you instead. Pushing past him you make your way inside and notice the bag of frozen peas he placed on the table for your cheek.

“What’s going on between you and Hangman?” asked Bob as you pressed the bag of peas to your cheek. Wincing at the coolness of it and the question he asked.

“I don’t owe you an explanation, Bob. We’re not together anymore.” 

“He’s our teammate, Peach and I thought my friend too.”

“It’s none of your business, Bob. If that’s all you came to say then I suggest you leave.” You reply in annoyance. The pain on your cheek worsens by the second making you shut your eyes. “What’s wrong?” he asks, hurrying towards you as you sit on the couch. “It's just my cheek. It’s nothing” 

“It’s not nothing. I’m really sorry, Peach. I don't know what came over me. He had that smug look on his face and I couldn't stop myself.”

“I’m sorry.” He whispered, as he got up to walk to the door. Flashbacks of the night you confessed you liked him surfacing as he turned to look at you when his hand grabbed the doorknob.

Your tears spilled as soon as he stepped out and shut the door. What the hell had you done? Your ex-boyfriend and best friend? or whatever Jake and you were, now caught up in this mess. 

The water in the shower was ice cold as you stepped in. But you didn’t care. Jake didn't answer your calls. On one hand it wasn't Bob’s business what was going on between you and Jake but if you didn’t tell him you knew he’d ask someone else from the squad and then everyone would want to know. The indecision came to a halt as your phone rang on the sink. 

But it wasn’t Jake or Bob. It was Nat. Which only could mean Bob had already told her. “Hello?” you said weakly as you pressed answer. “What the hell is going on, Peach? Bob’s face is all beat up and he won’t talk to anyone.” she said as you turned off the shower and wrapped a towel around you.

“I don’t want to talk about it Nat. I need to go.” you replied trying to hurry off the phone. “Bullshit. If you don’t tell me now, I’ll be at your house in 5” she replied, clearly displeased with your answer. “Guess I’ll see you then.” you said, ending the call and heading to your room to get dressed since you didn’t doubt Nat would be here soon.

Nat sat across from you on the couch just as Bob did hours earlier. Eying the bruise on your face that you assured her wasn’t from Bob when she first came in. Truthfully you didn’t know which one of the men was responsible for it.

“Nat, please promise me that anything we talk about is strictly between us. You cannot tell Bob or Rooster or anyone else.” You said, breaking the silence. “I promise,” she replied.

“Okay, so as you know Jake has been around a lot since me and Bob broke up.” you started and went on to tell her everything that happened up until earlier today. The shock on her face was understandable. Squirming in your seat you looked away as the silence was very uncomfortable.

“Peach, I don’t even know what to say.” she said after digesting everything. “I don’t know what to do Nat. On one hand I know I don't need to tell Bob because it isn’t his business but whatever I choose it’ll hurt both of them.” you respond realizing you’d have to pick between them and either choice will affect the entire dynamic of the friend group.

“I think you need to tell Bob.” she says and raises her hand to signal you to stop and listen as you shake your head. “Whatever you decide to do you need to be honest because it’s going to come out one way or the other. It’s better if he hears it from you.” She finishes and looks at you waiting to see what you think. “Maybe you’re right” you whisper in response, looking at anything but her.

Your mind is still split on what to do as she heads out the door. You’re thankful that you at least spoke with someone but you still have no idea what to do. 

Checking your phone one last time before you try to sleep, you notice that Jake still hasn’t responded and that Bob texted to apologize once again. 

Tomorrow was going to be a very long day.

Daylight

It had all been a bit of a blur.

One moment, I was walking with Joel. We were talking about the jobs we had been assigned. Relaxed and calm and as close to normal as we could get in the current world.

The next moment, my memories get lost in a huge jumble of yelling and fighting and fear. It was all such a mess. A terrifying mess.

My next clear moment was dragging Joel down the road with me. I didn't stop moving until we had gotten inside and the door was locked.

"I'm so sorry," I mumbled as Joel sat at my dining table.

It had been my fault. At least, partially.

It was all a long and very messy story.

Joel knew the whole thing. I think that's why he was so fast to entertain the whole fight.

Not that I ever wanted him involved. In all honesty, my life would have been so much easier without ever thinking about any of my life before the outbreak... as backwards as that sounds.

"Not your fault," he muttered, looking down at his knuckles.

"Except it is," I moved to sit in the chair next to him. "This wouldn't have happened if you never met me or if I just kept my fucking mouth shut. Now, you're hurt and fuck knows what we're gonna have to deal with now. Shit, I should've been smarter about this-"

"Stop it," he cut me off. "You did nothing wrong. Your ex having his head stuck up his ass is nowhere near your fault."

I let out a sigh as my eyes closed. I shook my head before pushing myself up. I grabbed my little first-aid kit and made my way back to the table.

I grabbed his hand.

"Why'd you do that," I asked. "Nothing good can come from shit like that."

"I doubt he would've let me walk away without getting a few blows in."

I did my best to clean the small cuts along his hand.

He didn't speak up again until I was wrapping the bandage around his hand.

"Y'know...," he started and trailed off. I looked back at him. "Never mind. It's nothing."

"Tell me," I pushed.

Maybe some part of me knew what he was going to say. Maybe I was desperate to hear it out loud. I would like to think that this is why I pushed him to say it out loud.

He let out a small sigh as he seemingly weighed the consequences of his actions.

"There's something else," I continued as I placed his bandaged hand on the table. "You just told me. Why did you do it?"

"Because I love you," he admitted.

I had to bite my lip to keep my smile from getting obnoxiously big.

We had been together for a while now. We had gotten through many days in the hell that was the modern world today. But in all that time, those words hadn't found a place in our lives.

I felt like a teenager again for a few moments.

"Did you get stuck like that-"

I reached forward and smacked his arm in response. He grinned at me.

"I love you too," I said after a pause.

He looked down at the table to hide his smile.

I reached over and placed my hand on his.

For just a moment, it felt like real peace was more than just a far-off dream.

It was all such a mess of a situation.

I had never planned on interacting with Joel again after we had separated. I knew that it would've been unrealistic to try to never see him again, but I could always turn the other way and leave.

Now, I was being forced into a situation where the only person I could interact with was Joel.

It was like the universe was attempting to play some stupid practical joke on me and I was failing to see the punchline.

I followed Joel and Ellie back to Joel's place. The only thing we could do at the time was wait for the time to pass.

I dropped my bag on the floor next to the couch before plopping on the seat that pretty much used to be designated as mine. I tried to keep an eye on Ellie without making it seem like I was staring. She went to sit by the window while Joel sat right next to me.

"Kid," I spoke up. She looked at me. "You should get some rest now. You aren't gonna get much of it later."

"Where," she asked.

I pointed behind me. "Mattress in the back."

"She's not sleeping on my bed," Joel interjected.

"I don't wanna sleep on his bed," she replied, crossing her arms over her chest. "He probably stinks."

I rolled my eyes before grabbing the spare blanket and throwing it to her. "To prevent the spread of germs... and protect against the smell. Now go."

She walked into the back without another word.

I sighed and relaxed into the couch.

"You should take your own advice," Joel muttered after a minute or two. I shook my head. "I'm serious, (Y/n)."

"I am just fine," I looked at him. "Never needed much sleep to function anyway."

He ran his hand over his face. "Always so damn stubborn."

"Can we not start this," I asked. "We've got enough to worry about without biting each other's heads off."

He sighed and looked away.

"You used to appreciate my stubbornness, anyway," I added.

I heard him chuckle. I felt a small grin pulling at the corner of my lips.

"You think we can do this?"

"Don't know," he shrugged. "I doubt we have much of a choice. Just gotta be ready to go."

I nodded. "You're scared, aren't you?"

"Scared? No. Annoyed."

"It's okay if you are," I said. "That's not a bad thing. It's just human."

He looked over at me. "Don't assume that you know how my mind works."

"For fuck's sake," I mumbled. It was my turn to run my hand over my face. "I just asked if we could avoid doing this. I was trying to comfort you. Be helpful. You have no reason to snap at me like that."

"No reason?"

"Yeah, no reason."

"What about you leaving?"

My jaw clenched. "You told me to go."

"You made no attempt to stay."

"I made an attempt every fucking day," I snapped before quickly lowering my voice, glancing back to make sure Ellie wasn't shifting around. "I fucking loved you, Joel. I fought to hold onto you with everything I had. You got scared and threw me out. After everything you promised me, after everything we did."

He didn't reply as I deflated into the couch cushion.

"Don't try to claim that I didn't try to hold on. I still feel like I'm clinging onto any part of you that I can find."

I looked out the window to the sun. I wanted to focus on anything else.

I missed him. God knows that I had missed Joel. Every day. Waking up without him was awful. Having to turn around and walk away because it was all I could do to keep myself from crumbling was hell. I just wanted what we had back.

"(Y/n)," he muttered.

I closed my eyes for a moment, not turning my head.

I felt the couch shift as he moved.

His hand touched my leg. "Please, look at me."

I turned my head back to him.

There was a pause.

One where we were sitting in silence, watching each other's reactions.

Joel seemed to hesitate for a moment before he leaned forward.

I froze for a moment as he kissed me. It was such a soft moment, yet it completely overwhelmed me. I had missed him so much that it hurt. That wasn't new. I had known about that pain for a long time now.

But what I didn't know was the way that the pain could be numbed. It was like a warmth spread through my chest, pushing away any pain, even if it was just for a little while.

I slowly kissed him back, feeling muscle memory take over as my hands reached out to touch his sides. Too long. It had been far too long since I experienced something as monumental as this moment.

I leaned back slowly, only moving far enough away to speak, "I love you."

He paused for a moment. I watched his eyes scan every part of my face. I couldn't tell if he was trying to see if I was lying or if he was trying to confirm that I wasn't some illusion his mind had created.

"I love you too," he muttered after a bit. I smiled at him.

His forehead rested against mine. We just sat there for a little while.

Through all of the chaos and the bullshit, I knew that I would always want him.

I just needed to keep a hold of him.

Neither one of us planned to have that conversation that night.

It was late. Really late.

It was one of the first times that I had stayed with him for the night.

It was nice. Being around him usually was. But no matter how nice it was, I could not get myself to fall asleep.

It wasn't a new thing for me to not feel comfortable falling asleep. I didn't expect lying next to Joel to change that.

I let out a sigh as I rolled over.

My head ended up on Joel's chest as I let one of my arms fall over his torso. I didn't even realize that I had brushed a scar until he flinched. I pulled my hand away, moving my head so I could look at him.

"You okay," I asked.

"Yeah," he muttered.

"Did I hit a fresh wound or something?"

"No," he shook his head. "You just have cold hands."

"Never bothered you before."

He chuckled.

I sat up and looked at him. "Are you sure that you're okay?"

He sighed. "(Y/n)..."

"I'm just worried about you."

He didn't respond.

He made no effort to stop me as I reached forward and moved the blanket off of him. I furrowed my eyebrows at him as I tried to figure out what I had bothered.

It took me a second, but I eventually moved my hand to lightly touch a scar on his side. He tensed.

"Sorry," I muttered. I pulled my hand away. "What... What's it from?"

I felt like I was watching the scales tip in his mind. Pros and cons changing the balance.

"I'll... I'll tell you my story if you tell me yours," I offered.

He reached out and touched my leg. I placed my hand on his.

"Deal?"

He nodded. "Deal."

I grinned and shifted to get comfortable.

That's when I first found out about Sarah. He told me everything about the day of the outbreak. The panic and the crash and the soldier. I held his hand through all of it. I felt a need to commit every sentence he spoke to memory. I needed to know this all because that was the only way I would be able to properly help him.

"Your turn," he muttered after a moment of silence.

I blinked at him a few times before slowly nodding. "Right."

I took a deep breath. I felt him tapping his fingers against my hand.

"You... are not gonna like this sentence," I started. His eyebrows furrowed. "Technically... I am... married."

"What-"

"Let me get through the story first," I stopped him. "It was a while ago now. I... I was convinced that we were in love. The day that the outbreak happened, we had been inside all day. Our neighbor had broken in... he was infected. I just remember the angry look on his face. It made me sick.

"My husband and I took off. We drove for a while. I can barely remember where we were even trying to get to. I just remember ditching the car in the traffic and taking off on foot.

"We... We got cornered by one of the infected. There was this hole in the ceiling of this building. He climbed up first and I couldn't get up there and instead of helping me up... he thanked me for saving him and took off."

There was a pause between us.

"He sounds like an ass," Joel commented. I chuckled. "How did you get out?"

"I found this old bat. A solid one. I had never fought anything, really. I yelled when I hit the thing over the head. Screamed. I kept thinking about how that person had a family and friends and how many of them could be dead. After that, I hid away until I could safely get to a QZ."

Joel nodded. "Did you ever find out what happened to your husband?"

I shook my head. "And I don't want to. I hate to wish death on someone, but... he kinda did that to me... to my face, so... I hope he got his ass kicked."

"So, you're only married..."

"Because the government's been a little too busy to figure out divorce court right now," I shrugged. "And I have no desire to track the bastard down again."

"Good," he mumbled.

I furrowed my eyebrows.

"If you stuck with that guy, then we would've never happened," he explained.

"I see."

Joel pushed himself to sit up.

"I'm sorry that I didn't tell you any of this before," I said.

"Can't say that I'm too upset," he replied.

He slowly leaned over and pressed his lips to mine. I slowly kissed him back, grinning against his lips.

Maybe, just maybe, there was something that I could let myself hold onto in this shitty world.
