Genuinely cannot express just how grateful I am for Ouroboros. Like I was just casually scrolling through the pressure tag on ao3 one day and just happened to run into vicissitude and think “oo this looks pretty interesting lemme give it a read”. Could not have ever predicted that I would end up spending most of my time on tumblr and writing fanfics/making fanart for it in the near future LOL. Before reading this fic series, I was in a bit of a depressive episode you could say. I was struggling a lot with college and just finding the motivation to do simple tasks was a struggle. I had nothing I could really look forward to or devote my time towards. But once I read Ouroboros I finally had smth to be passionate about again!! I can’t even begin to describe just how much this has reawakened so many things in me. Not only have I found the motivation I need to keep doing my college work, but I also have just really started to explore and spend a lot of my time on multiple different creative mediums I had kinda stopped exploring. Writing, art, etc. Before this I felt very insecure about my abilities within these fields, but now I actually have confidence and passion in them again!

I can’t remember the last time I have been apart of such a fun and welcoming community. I love the little mini fandom Ouroboros has created and it really feels like a little family almost haha. I’ve always been apart of very big fandoms, but being apart of such a small one like this is a very nice change. It’s really nice to just be seen by people and to actually know everyone within the community yknow?

I know this is kinda long but I really just needed to express my gratitude towards u and ur work spottie!! You’re an incredibly talented and kind person! So thank you so much, truly. Excited to see what u have in store for us in the future, and u have definitely earned ur self a permanent follower!!

Christmas With Joe Iconis: How the Songwriter's Annual Holiday Extravaganza Is Marking Its 14th Anniversary

Iconis and Family take the stage at 54 Below this weekend for their regular yuletide blowout.

For well over a decade, Tony-nominated songwriter Joe Iconis and his merry band of performers have spread yuletide cheer at 54 Below during his yearly Joe Iconis Christmas Extravaganza. As Iconis and Family gear up for this weekend’s 14th edition of the show (December 13), Iconis took the time to look back on the history of the spectacular and share how hard — but rewarding — it is to put together.

What inspired you to create the Joe Iconis Christmas Extravaganza, and how has it evolved in the 14 years since its inception? I’ve always had an unironic love of Christmas specials of stage and small screen. The Pee-Wee’s Playhouse Christmas Special is among my favorite pieces of art ever, yuletide or not. As a child, I fantasized about having a Christmas special of my very own. In college I’d go to see Charles Busch’s Times Square Angel, performed annually at Theater for a New Audience, and imagine doing something similar if ever given the chance. The Extravaganza — then called the Spectacular, a name that was altered after a cease and desist from Radio City in 2015! — was first performed as a one-night concert at Ars Nova in 2008. It was basically just a typical Iconis & Family concert with some Christmas covers thrown in and one or two scripted moments. I think we had 10 people in the cast which, at the time, was the biggest show I had ever done. It’s grown every year. More songs, more characters, more extravaganza. The show is now a full-scripted musical pretending to be a concert. There are characters that only exist in the world of the Christmas show and, this year more than ever, songs written specifically for the show. Writing the script is basically writing a new full-length musical every year. Can you share some favorite moments or performances that have stuck with you? Annie Golden, as the Rock and Roll Christmas Angel, sings the penultimate song, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” every year. I’ve known Annie as long as I’ve been working professionally in the theater, and I can measure my life in her performances of that song. It’s a moment that is so special to me, and every year I watch her sing it and feel like the luckiest man in the whole world. I also loved the first time we ever did drunk Mrs. Claus [Lorinda Lisitza] and depressed Santa [Jason SweetTooth Williams]. They were the first scripted characters I ever wrote for the show, and they really opened up my mind about what the Extravaganza had the potential to be.

The show features a mix of your signature style and holiday classics. How do you approach blending those two elements in a way that feels unique every year? I have a natural affinity for art that mixes highbrow and lowbrow sensibilities, so the show has real uptown/downtown vibe. There can be an absolutely filthy exchange between the Krampus (Lilly Tobin) and Cyril Von Miserthorpe (our villain, played by Will Roland) one minute, and then a full-blown google-eyed production number that wouldn’t be out of place in a theme park production of 42nd Street the next. I like the tension of smutty material that feels wholesome and vice versa. The Christmas show is also a really nice opportunity for me to write material that is in conversation with present-day America. I wouldn’t go so far as to call the Extravaganza political theater, but I think it has more to say than you might expect. As previously mentioned, I’m a massive Charles Busch fan and the sensibility of the show is partially inspired by Vampire Lesbians of Sodom or Psycho Beach Party. My biggest thing is that the show isn’t cynical and it’s never ironic. We’re never winking at the audience. Everything comes from a genuine love of the characters, holiday traditions, and of scrappy, DIY theater. I’d like to think that the Extravaganza is the best “show you put on in your backyard with your friends” of all time.

You work with a close-knit group of performers regularly. How does that camaraderie shape the vibe of the Extravaganza each year and the characters they all rotate in playing? We’re like a big rep company. Some people swap roles from year to year based on availability. Some people swap roles for the hell of it. With each edition it becomes harder and harder to come up with new characters and material. At a certain point I always think to myself, “Have I said everything I have to say about Christmas? Am I tapped out?” And then I am, inevitably, inspired by my brilliant family of collaborators. The performers, for sure, but also the creative team, led by director John Simpkins and producer Jennifer Tepper. The work they do on this show is incomprehensible. People don’t realize how gut-wrenchingly hard it is to make these shows, from the planning to the rehearsing to the performing. You have to be deeply insane to keep doing it because it gets more and more impossible every year. But there’s just something in me that can’t stop. All I ever wanna do is make art that I believe in with people I love. The Christmas Extravaganza provides me the most batshit opportunity to do just that. How could I say no to that? What can audiences expect from this year’s show at 54 Below, and are there any surprises or special guests we should be excited about? I can’t give away any secrets but I will say that we have a brand-new opening this year that I’m excited about. It’s our first new opener since 2009. As per usual, I’ve written a few lines that may get me sued, so people can be excited to either be scandalized or delighted by those. In general, the show is definitely the most “anything can happen” performance that I do all year. Because the show involves so many people (between onstage and backstage, I think we’ve got 60+ people working on the show?) the show is rehearsed piecemeal in incredibly well-planned chunks. I would not wish the scheduling of Christmas Extravaganza rehearsals on my worst enemy. This is all just to say that because of the nature of this beast is rehearsed, the only time we are ever able to run it with the full cast is during the performance. There are always surprises and, often, they are surprises that people talk about for years to come.

What’s the difference between field of mistria and stardew? They look surface level very similar to me!

a lot actually! i think they seem similar due to the pixel art style and the fact theyre both farming sims but again i wouldnt immediately equate every new pixel style farming sim to stardew. they’re both pretty different i’d say and for me at least feel different when playing.

i also think its important to say that fields of mistria is still an early access game which means its not completed yet and will be worked on by the devs still to add and incorporate more features. so what we see right now is an early version of what the game will have to offer in say a few years from now.

fields of mistria reminds me more of harvest moon than stardew valley if thats maybe a better point of reference for you.

i’d say fields of mistria feels almost more whimsical and magical in a way. its this cute little town that feels like youre in a cozy fantasy world and theres this underlining plot with the dragon statues and you can gain magical powers to help you farm and do a lot things and theres a mana mechanic. its all very fun and cutesy. you join the town as an adventurer not as a farmer but you take of a plot of land where you can farm and take care of animals.

the farming is very much like every other sim but that doesnt mean it isnt good its just what you expect when playing a farming sim.

what i really loved about fields of misteria is that the characters and the town feels genuinely alive. the events and all the dialogue between characters is amazing and makes them feel like they really exist. you actually start to look forward to these weekly events and what everyone has to say. very early on in the game you can tell there was a lot of thought and care put into the npcs and the dynamics around them. oh and theres so much love put into the art it’s incredible how good this game looks.

to me stardew feels a lot more Go fast, do this task you have a time limit, you want to get this done before a certain season, very fast paced and maximizing everything meanwhile fields of misteria feels a lot more adapted towards anyones pace. it doesnt feel like youre punished for taking a slower style of play. feels like you can actually appreciate and cherish working on every skill the game offers like archeology, blacksmithing, farming, fishing, etc. every part of the game feels like its made so that you find the time to work on every feature.

also this isnt shade towards stardew i adore that game and have played it for years. its just important to differentiate games sometimes cause im sure the devs dont want to be constantly hearing theyre another stardew valley. because they arent. its field of mistria babey 

so yeah i’d say give it a try its a very cozy game. especially if ur into farming sims you should 100% give it a try. it has an incredible amount of potential and i personally cannot wait to see how this game evolves and what’ll offer in the future

Simblr gratitude but I'm a few days late

I swear I wasn't going to miss it, but then life threw some plot twists and then it threw bigger plot twists and ahhh. December has been a rollercoaster and I hate rollercoasters but at the moment we are so back babey. (Okay...not quite "so back" but I think I've processed most of the hell of the past 72 something hours.)

I'm really bad at expressing these feelings so it's just going to be one big list with nothing else added at all, but I want to thank you all. I haven't been around simblr or simblr discords much this year but you stayed. And some of you have been here for a HELLA long time. And then there are also those of you whose stories and edits are absolute chef's kiss and if it was possible for me to catch up on literally everything I've missed, I would, but right now I'm just happy when I catch you being amazing whenever I can. Or we used to talk a lot more often and now we don't but I still cherish the time we did.

I would like to promise that next year, I'll be here more often and I'll be more active in the community again (rather than just scheduling my legacy and leaving again), but I'll be dealing with some changes soon, so...yeah. But I'll try. Let's just say I might be out of the woods and entering a better phase of my life.

Hi hi!! As promised!! How did Aster get her name? So curious about how they settled on that!!

" Well mom loves gardening! ever since she picked up that garden when she was younger its been one of her favorite things. " Aster snorts, waving a hand around. " Personally, couldn't care less about gardening, too boring! HAH! Does not stop me from being dragged away to help sometimes though, its like a really, really reallllyyy lame chore " " Mom named me and my sibling after flowers and plants, since she cherishes them a lot. Talks a lot about how its not just because she enjoys gardening, but how much seeing plants meant for her the first time she saw em... blah blah blah... N' we changed her whole world for the better too... whatever, whatever! " " That's the long "my moms super duper sentimental and sappy and yada yada" explanation! Usually I just go because of the flowers and because my mom is total nerd. " [ ooc response below ] --- Long story short, yeah it was as simple as Silver really, really took on plants, gardening, etc, as one of her favorite hobbies. Of course there's plenty of sentimental value coming from someone who was born and grew up in a wasteland of future. Aster, the oldest, as stated before is named after aster flowers, and was named mostly after appearance of the flowers ( coming in blue, pink, purple, red and white ). Aster does NOT have any interest in gardening, but does love a good flower, even if he could never be bothered to do more than admire it. She likes the name and thinks its fitting as she is pretty awesome and cool and awesome again, he's named after a pretty flower and shows that off by dressing himself up to be proud of that Aster is named after a flower, and his younger sibling ( the other jetilver / silvjet kid, owned by lethalbreadkills ) is named Calamintha ( just called Mint for short by most of her family ) and the youngest and newest edition is Zinnia ( Also owned by lethalbreadkills, Zonilver fankid ) so the flower/plant/herb theme is present through out them all! Silver did most of the naming, though now that I think about it probably discussed possible names with Jet too, to see if there was any that jet liked. So, of course the aster, which also just means star, worked out! Mint is probably the one Silver fully just went on her own with, and Zinnia IS a flower, but also keeps up that silly naming theme all the no zone residents had. Name that starts with a Z babey!!!

[ On another note, before I finish this off as I wanna clarify some things! ] - One, I'm aware silver uses he/him pronouns in canon. though in this lil au and my own personal headcanons outside of this, she is a trans woman, idk silver is so transgender to me personally. Silver being any kind of transgender is so duper duper correct, but this take specifically takes on the trans woman route - Two, while aster never refers to Zinnia as a sibling, they are infact siblings. Silver is in a polygamous relationship between jet and Zonic, Zonic and Jet aren't dating, but they're both dating Silver etc etc so don't worry! there wasn't a divorce in the slightest between Silver and Jet LMAOO
