honestly id l o v e too because i love plants but,,, im kinda horrible at taking care of them though still way better than the majority of my family (research helps) so the only plant i own is kinda a small-palm-tree-looking thing in a bigass glass jar that i saved from my mother’s plant-destructing hands and its mostly doing well (the ends of its leaves are starting to be yellow tho and im worried:((( )

okay im gonna be completely honest with yall and say that my every single try at keeping a journal failed spectacularly and i lost motivation after like a few months so my only journals rn are my fancy fake-leather-bound calendar to note tests and assessments into, a kinda roughed up notebook that i uses for noting down poems or scribbling or passing notes in class, and a kinda fancy bullet journal notebook that i used as a book of shadows for a while but since my fountain pen died i didnt touch it

i love sunrises because its so peaceful and everyone is asleep but also i subconsciously immediately correlate them with waiting for a train to take me to school (because thats basically the only time i see them) so its a bittersweet love especially with my fucked up biological clock

okay so basically my two favourite stuffed animals (i still have them, they sit in my wardrobe) were two teddy bears (like maybe 20cm high each of them) and one was pure brown and the other was silver-brown and they had stereotypical polish male names “Waldek” (read. Valdek) and Stefan (i think tho im not sure if i remember correctly, my memory is a feeble thing sometimes

i always liked the kora/persephone myth (though demeter is an overbearing parent to the nth power), loki and thor crossdressing at a party to get mjolnir back, atalanta because shes a queen and id politely ask her to kick my ass, and cassandra because she deserved better, and theres a l o t more because alas i was a mythology nerd but this post is long enough for me not to make this section 20 times longer sjjsjsjsjsjks

but there are a lot of slavic myths that are very cool too, though we dont know that much about them as about the greeks for example

o o o o h yeah i do like poetry because to create such a beautifully sounding thing with only words someone has to be a genius

okay heres the thing. for anyone else both my playlist library and my bookshelf would be considered pure chaos of a mad man b u t they actually have a highly focused system which means that i sort them based on their vibes, lovability and (in case of books) their age and whether or not theyre a part of a series so i would say my bookshelf is rather organised (when a quarter of it isnt occupying my desk that is) and my music is more organised than not but sometimes it gets out of control and i have to sort it entirely again

★ HT Brunch Cover story: Kabir Khan’s crossover politics!

Anecdotes from the life of a documentary filmmaker, who easily transformed into making Bollywood blockbusters. How did he strike the balance?

Because he makes masala movies, most people tend to dismiss Kabir Khan as a director. True, he’s successful, they will agree. But he makes a certain kind of film targeted at a certain kind of an audience so, of course, he is successful.

But these people fail to recognise one crucial thing about Kabir Khan’s movies. That at the core of his masala entertainers, there is always a subtle, yet strong, political and social message.

Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), for instance, was about borders. While it highlighted the human bond between the people of India and Pakistan, it also touched upon how people of a particular religion face ugly biases even while trying to rent a house. New York (2009) highlighted the illegal detention of Muslims in post 9/11 America. Phantom (2015) showed the aftermath of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. This is a difficult thing to pull off in a Bollywood film. But Kabir Khan is an ace at messaging.

“As a director, I say what I want to with my movie. If a person can access the subtext, great! But on face value, the movie should hit the mark with its audience.”

“The main idea of making a movie is to provide entertainment,” Kabir explains. “But as a director, I also say what I want to say with my movie. If a person can access the subtext, great! But on face value, the movie should hit the mark with its audience.”

The Salman factor

He followed it up with a bigger film, Ek Tha Tiger (2012), with superstar Salman Khan. This was Kabir’s third film while Salman Khan had had a good two decades of being Salman Khan. “So, of course the balance was hugely tilted!” Kabir laughs. “We had huge disagreements. Sometimes I would go overboard with my vision and sometimes he would get too mass-focused and had to be toned down, but we found a middle path.”

Though Salman often remained unconvinced about certain things, he always complied with the director’s vision. “He never came from the ‘Oh, I am the star, so you have to listen to whatever I say’ place. There was never arrogance. He would argue and sulk, but do it,” says Kabir. Perhaps Salman’s reputation as a brat on sets is too strong for most directors, Kabir muses. Perhaps they buy into the image so much that they don’t even try and push him.

But Kabir credits Salman for attempting a script like Bajrangi Bhaijaan. “It is essentially the movie of the little girl,” he points out. “There was nothing ‘hero’ like about Salman’s role. But he got so excited about the script that he even produced it! Although Salman never talks about politics and has an uneasy relationship with the press, his friends know just how conscious and concerned he is by what is going on. Salman’s politics are very similar to Bajrangi’s and I knew the script would resonate with him.”

Standing up for stars

Kabir has taken his own sweet time to get into the Bollywood groove; the songs in particular really foxed him. “I just couldn’t wrap my head around the very idea,” he says. “But while writing Bajrangi, I actually wrote songs into the script, and I didn’t have to force it!”

This does not mean the Bollywoodisation of Kabir Khan is finally complete. “I don’t care about box office numbers,” says the director whose Bajrangi Bhaijaan grossed ~300 crore, shaking his head about the corporatisation of Bollywood. “There are so many different parameters today that make these numbers,” says Kabir. “But I don’t make films for festivals either! I make movies for the mass audience and for myself. A filmmaker has to make a movie for himself first.”

However, Kabir does see value in international film festivals. “The idea is to highlight the uniqueness of cinema from various regions and there is a lot of interest for Bollywood as a genre,” he explains. “There is no point making an Indian film on the lines of Iranian cinema, because Iran is already making that! Why would you watch an Iranian movie that looks like a Korean movie? You will watch a Korean movie instead!”

A Bollywood movie is all about star power, and Kabir totally believes that is true. “Stars are stars because of their fan following; these are the people who will throng the theatres,” he points out. “Also, having a star makes it easier to get the money to make the film, which is crucial for a big budget movie.”

For instance, he explains, for his forthcoming movie, 83 (2020), he cast Ranveer Singh instead of a newcomer who looks more like Kapil Dev, so he could get the budget the film requires. In any case, most of the new stars are great actors, he says. “So it is a win-win situation. Ranveer is a brilliant actor! If he reminds you so much of Kapil Dev, it is not because of his make-up or prosthetics, it is because of Ranveer the actor. He has got the mannerisms spot on.”

Max Einstein: The Genius Experiment - Review

Or overview, really, since I know a lot of you were curious but didn’t want to go through the ordeal of reading it. At least not before someone else screened it. So... you’re welcome.

Published: 2018

Genre: middle grade adventure

Overall impressions: Conceptually, I liked it. The plot was intriguing, and Max was a likable character. It suffered from the usual problems of a Patterson production: too fast-paced, not enough details, not enough time spent on character building. (Some of these points will come up in my annotations.) However, it worked as a middle-grade novel. It had a lot of empowering messages for kids, as well as an intriguing and mysterious yet fairly simple plot of good versus evil. The lack of specific detail and fast-paced plot is (unfortunately) common in middle-grade novels, so I can’t exactly fault it for that. I’m going to assume it’s far below the reading level of anyone reading this review, but it’s still an interesting read and I’m planning on reading the sequel, whenever it comes out. There were a lot of unanswered questions regarding Max’s past that I really wish were addressed in this book rather than being saved for later.

11 - Doesn’t her suitcase get too heavy with all the books in it?

19 - Bold of you to assume the cops would actually listen to Max

21 - I’d like more of the backstory on Max’s early childhood, since she has that suitcase but doesn’t know who her parents are. Then where did she get her name? [It’s mentioned later that she doesn’t even have a birth certificate.]

29 - HOW is she in college?? At NYU??

32 - Well, this is sketchy as fuck

33 - ...Max watches The Big Bang Theory??

36 - McS’cuse me?? No one’s going to stop this? A lecture hall full of students and no one’s concerned?? [In the scene in question, Max is being dragged out of the lecture hall by two guys in black suits. It would have been interesting, and more realistic, if another student had tried to intervene. You’d think at least a handful of people in a group of 18-22 year olds might feel protective of the only 12-year-old in their class.]

44 - Aww I like Quincy

If that dude wanted to, like, kidnap Max, why send her to the foster care place at all? [This is later explained, although I don’t think it was a good enough justification.]

48 - Why send her to middle school either?

...God I would’ve loved this in middle school. I probably needed it.

As usual, I just wish the narration would slow down. Add more details.

Actually I’m personally offended by how much this book sounds like something I would’ve written in middle school.

74 - Max just seems too naive/trusting considering what her life has been like thus far. Or maybe I’m used to Patterson protagonists being snarky and cynical. Both, maybe.

83 - This is sketchy as hell. It just seems too good to be true.

100 - One kid wins? Why not just have them all work together to solve the world’s problems? Also: I know they’re “geniuses,” but why only use children? Because they’re impressionable and malleable? Tend to take things at face value?

[The twist at the end, which I won’t reveal, actually makes the design of the test and a lot of the oversights make a lot more sense.]

113 - “Original investment,” “Einstein Project”... was Max genetically engineered by the Corp? Conspiracy theory.

You know, this is suspiciously similar to Genius: The Game, which was written by Leopoldo Gout. According to his author bio on Amazon, he’s a filmmaker and has worked with James Patterson on a number of projects (including, I believe, the Maximum Ride movie). Coincidence? Probably not.

About me:  I’ve been writing on AO3 for about a year now. And so far, I’ve written 21 different Yuri!!! On Ice fics, and a ridiculous amount of chapters. How to Get: You can check out my review of Aikatsu Photo on Stage to learn how to get free Japanese Itune items by creating a free Japanese Itunes account. In Aikatsu Photo on Stage, I was unable to help android users locate the game as it does not run on Bluestacks (or any rooted devices). I do not know if the same holds true for Idolmaster Theater Days as well. If so Android users may need a VPN Tunneling Service, which I know nothing about. Sorry.

Also in the case of this game when registering for a new account, be sure you select Japan as your country. This cannot be changed later. You can leave “English” as the language, but this only affects emails Bandai will send to you, and does not affect the language actually in the game – which is sadly only available in Japanese. Later, if Bandai ever releases the game in North America and in English you will have to make a new Bandai account to play the English versions of the game. But we’ve never received a single IdolM@ster game, despite success of their Love Live series which is very similar, so I don’t think the chances of English localization are very high! 🙁

Overall: 66/80 83% B “Very Good Game for Girls”

Overview: 10/10 – I have a new obsession, as anyone who follows me on Instagram may have noticed this past weekend. Idol Master Million Live Theater Days may just be my new favorite mobile game of all time. It takes what I enjoy about Love Live, Aikatsu Photo on Stage, and Idol Master Cinderella Girls and smooshes them all together.

Graphics: 10/10 – The best part about Theater Days is that the girls are rendered in Live 2D just like Ensemble Stars, Dream Girlfriend, and countless other anime games. This technology allows for very lifelike anime renders. While 3D would feel stiff and 2D would feel flat, Live 2D finds a balance between these two. I can’t get enough of these Live 2D games!! In fact I wish to see the technology used even more, not just on mobile games, but PC and Console Games as well. I don’t know if this technology was used on Nekopara, but the result is VERY similar. The models look more clean than the cel shading technologies used in Catherine and School Days. Live 2D is the best thing to ever happen to anime games. More companies need to take notice.

Not only do they look great, the girls appear on stage as full bodies, not just a tiny face in a circle like in Love Live School Idol Festival. Aikatsu Photo on Stage also has full bodied — but static — images (which kinda “bounced” up and down at times on the screen). But here, in Theater Days, thanks to Live 2D, the girls dance and sing on stage with unique dance routines choreographed for each song and each singer; and it’s just so incredibly cuuuute!!! I can’t stop playing, watching, and taking like a bazillion screen shots, seriously! Just check out my instagram account lol.

Music 10/10 – Aikatsu Photo on Stage seemed lacking in the quality of the music compared to Love Live, but Idol Master Million Live Theater Days is at least as good, if not even better, in music when compared to Love Live. The songs are seriously addictive. I really like some of the earliest tracks like “Brand New Theater” and “Sentimental Venus”, but all of the songs I’ve heard have been good. I’ve played and watched the music videos (in game after beating the song at least once), over and over, all weekend. The music is so good, and the girls’ dancing is so well timed with the music. It feels so real, like you really are at a concert. The lights on the stage, the audience, the movement, the emotions, omg. It’s indescribable. There’s also excellent voice acting in the story scenes as well.

Gameplay 8/10 – And like Aikatsu Photo on Stage and Idol Master Cinderella Girls you can dressup your girls in different outfits. I haven’t figured out how to do this yet. I’ve won, what looks like white, wedding dress, looking rewards from several songs, but can’t figure out how to use them or equip them. But I do see that we can change the uniforms for each member of our party, I just don’t have anything showing up when I go to this menu to change their outfits, except the starting red/white/blue outfits they are given at the beginning of the game. Perhaps the white dresses are materials or tokens to draw new outfits or something else useful and related to outfits. I just know there are costume changes, and the costume changes will be represented on stage when playing or watching / listening to the songs.

There are also visual novel like elements to the game. I can’t read Japanese, but luckily there is only 1 response / option to select. I’ve only found 2 instances where I’ve had to make a “choice”. The first time was when choosing which starter card I wanted. I picked the girl in the pink sweater with side pony tail. The other time that the game asked me to make a choice was shortly after that, when a new girl is introduced, she has very short hair, sometimes in short pigtails with red ribbons and a green dress. — I think the main girl I had drawn already was jealous of the new girl, I think based on their facial expressions / interactions. My “main girl” and 2 other “starter girls” were in another room talking about something/one when the “new girl” overheard them, and they apologized and got embarrassed. I was presented an option, probably something encouraging the girls to get along. Whatever I picked seemed to surprise the girls. Story went on for a bit, then they all sang together, after the performance, my “main girl” came to me and asked something of me. There were 2 options, and the one I picked seemed to make her happy / satisfy her a bit.

There will be other chances to interact with your girls, any time you are logged in, you can move around different rooms, and find your girls randomly going about their day. Sometimes they will have an “!” or a “…” bubble above their heads, when tapping on a girl, you can listen to what they have to say, which usually doesn’t even require any feedback from you – and rewards you with XP and the rare/summoning currency.

You rank up as a producer by completing these “quests” and of course by putting on live performances which is where the majority of the gameplay comes from. You assemble a team of 6 girls. They have different attributes such as Princess, Fairy, and Angel. The song attributes change every day. For example, yesterday the songs wanted Princess, and Today they want Fairy. On my first day of play they wanted “All” which I guess would require a balanced approach. You can have several different teams built and saved up and switch freely between them. It also seems you can have it build the teams for you by hitting the pink “recycle” looking icon, and then choosing the attribute you want. For example, Princess would autofill your highest scoring Princess cards into the team. This doesn’t mean that only Princess members would appear, because you might have a fairy or angel who has high Princess points too. This probably all sounds familiar if you’ve played other titles such as Love Live School Idol Festival.

When playing the actual song, you can choose different difficulty settings. The easiest difficulty features just 2 “bubbles” to tap. The medium difficulty features 4 bubbles. and the highest difficulty I believe has 6 bubbles.

These bubble “holders” are located across the bottom of your screen. As the song goes on, rainbow white shiny “pearls” will fall down the screen towards one of the bubbles. Tap the bubble at just the right time to gain the most points and chain “perfect” time attacks for bonus points. Once again, very similar to Love Live.

Unlike Love Live. there’s a few new game mechanics, a large floating butterfly “bubble” will appear to give huge bonus points when timed correctly. Other bubbles require sliding/gliding your finger to “follow” the bubble’s path, or tapping and holding, or tapping repeatedly to correctly receive points from that bubble.

The other big draw to these games is the Waifu collecting aspect, and this game is no exception. You can draw cards using diamonds or pink coins. The diamonds have a higher chance to yield Super Rare or Super Super Rare girls to add to your team. The diamonds is the “paid” currency, but there are ways to earn it free in game.

So this all sounds lovely, so why did I take 2 points off? There are no events yet – but keep in mind, the game just launched a few days ago in Japan. In Love Live, there’s almost constant events which allow you to play against or with other players to earn limited edition super rare cards. Nothing like that has happened yet in Theater Days. If they up the rate of events, then Gameplay would probably be a 10/10 too!

Also while playing, your stamina drains so you may find yourself having to wait, or pay, for it to refill. No different from Love Live or the other rhythm games. Those are the only downsides I’ve seen so far!

Story: 5/10 – There is a story, but until they release this game in English (which will probably never happen) I can’t say if it’s a good or bad story. Therefore, a medium score seems the most fair here, given that I’m reviewing this game for my readers, who are also, largely, English speaking gamers.

Characters: 5/10 – The characters are cute! I think I may have seen some from other Idol Master games. But since I’m missing out on their backstories, I still can’t enjoy the characters to their fullest, though I do have some favorites already just based on looks and voice actresses.

Replay Value: 8/10 – No Waifu, No Laifu! lol. The game needs some more events, and to continue to release new girls, new clothes, and new songs, as long as those things continue to happen, this is a game I will be playing and recommending for years to come. In my opinion, it’s the best rhythm game ever of all time! A Must Play Mobile Masterpiece, and a shame we will probably never see an English version of this game.

Geeky: 5/5 – Mind Blowing Graphics. Best Graphics ever for a mobile game. So lifelike. It’s like anime has become a reality. Also excellent voice acting and music tracks.

One note: I think the songs may change slightly – or I’m imagining things? based on which characters you have in your team when performing the song. For example, the first song has a part, where I think, the girls are saying their names and throwing their hands in a circular high five like cheer shape. Obviously there’s more than 6 different girls that could be in your party, and I think they would have used vocals for different names here. — Also, I think… but could be REALLY wrong …. each girl’s voice actress has recorded each “part” of the song…. because… not only does “which girls” you have effect the sound of the song, but “where those girls are” also affects how the song sounds and who gets more time in the spot light and who sings which lines. — My time with the game is short thus far, and I could be imagining this entirely. That’s why I did not factor it into my review score above – however, if it is in fact true, it’s fascinating and makes me want to try all the combinations I can make for each song by choosing and arranging my girls in different ways.

61) "Lost," Faith Hill

"With everything I have doesn't mean a thing if it's without you." I. Don't know what that means? I could stare at some of these lyrics and not really understand what's happening other than I'm supposed to believe in love and all its power, which is probably the most we can expect out of a late-career Faith Hill song. It's not great, but, y'know, just as I feel weird about trying to assess Fifth Harmony songs, I feel like Faith Hill songs are reaching for that Aunt With Too Many Inspirational Quote Pillows demographic, and I have to respect the choice she had made to service this demographic. This was someone's third wedding song, and I think that's beautiful. (Also, credit where credit's due, Kara DioGuardi co-wrote a song I tolerated.)

65) "Never Wanted Nothing More," Kenny Chesney

This is a weird one. Because it's Kenny Chesney, but it's also Chris Stapleton, but it's also Chris Stapleton writing a Kenny Chesney song. It's complicated. Like, you look at Kanye West's early discography, you see names you know, Jermaine Dupri, Goodie Mob, Lil' Kim, Nas, Alicia Keys, you see respectable names, you can see how the songs Kanye produced would fit into the greater Kanye catalogue. There's a difference, of course, between production and writing, but early Kanye doesn't feel like producer-for-hire. This song is written so outside the voice I've come to associate with Chris Stapleton that I can't imagine him ever writing it. Like, this song fits in with the Chris Stapleton origin story because it shows Chris Stapleton has been doing this thing for a long time and was good at it, but that's the only way it fits. This is just a Kenny Chesney song that Chris Stapleton happened to write, whereas "Izzo" is a Jay-Z song with a Kanye beat. Country music's weird as hell, man. I ain't gonna get it.

69) "Dance Tonight," Paul McCartney

it's gotta be pretty nuts to know that your status as one of the greatest songwriters of all time is so secure that there is absolutely nothing you could do to remove yourself from that pedestal. Like, the only reason I can find for a song like this (read: a bad one) being made from a dude at this level is, he was bored and wanted to see if people would call it an extraordinary songwriting feat if he just dropped a track like "it's nice when people have fun!"

74) "Let It Go," Keyshia Cole ft./Missy Elliott & Lil Kim

Pretty good! A little subdued for my taste, a little too restrained for a song about letting go, but I think we've talked about how I'm not naturally drawn to R&B simply because the genre is so subdued and restrained, so it's probably my own fault I'm not as into this song as I feel I should be. Like, I like all the names involved, I thnk Keyshia Cole was a pretty decent singer, I like the ingredients of the song, but someone put them together with a different palette than mine in mind. Ugh, and that's just the worst, how the world doesn't make enough things for white males to enjoy. This song, though, I think it's a'ight! I have no complaints about it specifically!

91) "How Do I Breathe," Mario

...i swear i've heard this exact same r&b song at least twice, though. like, "let it go" had missy on the track, it was cool. this is another song about a man who is sad his girlfriend left him and wishes she would come back. mario's a more engaging vocalist than the joes and tanks of 2007, like i'd like to hear him sing a better song, but... man, this week is just songs i didn't need to hear, and not in the sense that pop music is bad and i shouldn't try to listen to this much of it, more that 2007 just kinda said, "hey, here's some shit you've already heard from us, have fun." i feel i don't need to have an opinion on this song because i've already had an opinion on some stargate joint or another, y'know?

97) "Doomsday Clock," Smashing Pumpkins

hey speaking of unnecessary, another smashing pumpkins song! and not even one i need to begrudgingly admit is good, this one is the thing i expected smashing pumpkins to sound like, billy corgan nasally whining about some bullshit or another while the guitar plods along dutifully. nothing here is innovative, nothing here takes smashing pumpkins and frames it in a new light for me, this is just a song that exists. these songs all exist.

Well, obviously, since we’re hitting the halfway point, we’re gonna be doing something special! ...Or I would forget how to count and not realize this was the halfway point. Anyway, no Top 20s because nothing changed. 2017!

4) "Wild Thoughts," by DJ Khaled ft./Rihanna & Bryson Tiller

I don't believe anything Bryson Tiller says on this song. My understanding of Bryson Tiller was that he was a simpering sad boy who sang about his feelings, so when he comes on a track where he a) has to present himself as an equal to Rihanna and b) has to make the argument that he is a worthy sexual partner for Rihanna, it's hard to take him seriously, because all he's done before suggests he's not this person. Like, someone thought of Bryson Tiller was the answer to the question "Who could make Rihanna think wild thoughts?" and that's just amazing to me. Literally anyone else would have been better. Are we not ready to lean so fully into the Latin trend that we'll give Luis Fonsi a starring role in a DJ Khaled song? Are we just this over Miguel? Hell, we know from "Run Up" that PARTYNEXTDOOR's capable of being occasionally interesting, why not him! This song could've been something, but man, that Bryson Tiller feature sinks it.

51) "Feels," by Calvin Harris ft./Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry & Big Sean

I appreciate the work Calvin Harris puts in to making pop music funky again, I think he's aware there's a direct line in music history from him to The Chainsmokers and he's doing his best to distance himself from that, but there's a limit to how much I can enjoy a song with the line "I know you're not afraid to catch feels with me." Like, this is another good song, Calvin Harris has been doing work this spring/early summer, it's just, one of them has to be the worst, and it's this one with its tumblr-ass hook. I wish I had a more legit reason to not be into this song. Nope. It's just that one word. I don't even necessarily mind that word, it's just, an entire song built around that word isn't a party I wanna attend.

83) "Relationship," by Young Thug ft./Future

Comparing Young Thug to the other dudes in his genre is like comparing a wasp to a group of bumblebees. They're sort of the same thing, but Young Thug is so much different and fearsome. ...This isn't his best song? This is the song you'd expect to chart off the album given the pedigree, but also, it isn't, because there's so many other, better songs on the album? But we should be evaluating this song for what it is, not what it isn't. "I put my dick inside her mouth before she act." Neat! Of all the many things Young Thug is, he is not perfect.

89) "Feel it Still," by Portugal. The Man

Who Won the Week?

A few weeks ago, there was like a three-year stretch where the Houston Texans and the Cincinatti Bengals would play each other in the football playoffs. They were boring games and bad to watch, and while the Bengals and Texans were good enough to have made the playoffs, it kinda sucked that one of the two got to go to the next round while a different, more fun team to watch gets eliminated, or was left out of the playoffs entirely. “Feel It Still” is a fine song and is definitely better than “Let it Go,” but like. “Feel it Still” shouldn’t be the champion for the week. I dunno, kinda meh for both weeks, 2017 takes it because I don’t think “Feel it Still” should get demerits for all the Kodak Black I didn’t listen to. So.
