three point tether
Tumblr media
the reason art with ai at the creative helm will never get traction in any long term or meaningful trot is because art is more than what is in the text of the book, or notes of the song, or runtime of the movie. art is whats OUTSIDE of the medium, a performance piece between creator and experiencer
i say this all the time and i think most buckaroos think im off in the clouds as eccentric ART WEIRDO (theyre NOT WRONG) but in a practical BUSINESS sense what i am saying is true. folks want to pretend art is in some lab where art and artist and viewer are separate things. but they never will be
art exists outside of a vacuum. it is not static. it grows and lives and evolves based on culture its in and who is experiencing it. whether you know it or not, what you LIKE or DISLIKE has just as much to do with the story AROUND the art than the art itself.
you carry what you know about me to my tinglers, you carry what you know about the beatles to the beatles, you even carry what you DONT KNOW to artists and THAT changes your experience. the STORY outside of the art is unavoidable because the lack of a story is still a story
so what does this have to do with ai art? my point is, the STORY of ai generated art is potentially interesting when it FIRST happens, or when its a one of one, but when it is co-opted by corporations to make slop, or when you consider the ethics of data scraping and theft, the story becomes sour
in other words, REGARDLESS OF WHAT AI GENERATED ART ‘MAKES’, the STORY outside of the story is derivative and unethical. what is even more important, and the greatest problem of all, is that its very very BORING. ‘oh wonderful someone made a painting from a prompt CANT WAIT to dive into this world’
so fundamentally these projects from tech goofs only serve to show that they have absolutely no understanding of art in the first place. the starry night is not just a painting, it is a three point tether between van gogh, the painting and us, which is constantly breathing and moving and living
if i was to give advice to any artist about how to stand out in their field i would say this: figure out what YOUR STORY is, not just within your chosen medium, but OUTSIDE of any medium. THAT STORY is your art, and it is infinitely cosmically unique. USE IT. EMBRACE IT. that is your power buckaroo

Attention Artists!
We've reached the point when you can have AI generated "speedpaints".
The way they work is by giving the engine an image to make a "speedpain" video from. Please don't be fooled! Althought the AI is quite good at showing you different stages of the drawing process (sketch, clean up, colors, final render) there's still a few things to keep in mind to recognize these AI generated videos.
These videos are basically just a collection of images, they do not show each stroke of the pen. This is not a perfect tell because actual drawing apps, like Procreate, Ibis Paint X, and other programs with built in timelapses work similarly. These programs do not screen record, rather record each time you put the pen down and lift it up, so a long line won't show up progresively, it will just suddenly appear on screen. That said, it is a good thing to keep in mind when trying to recognize AI generated "speedpaints".
Some of the tells I recognize are:
Related to my point above, the AI generated "speedpaints" tend to make big changes that just show up. It's not like that straight line just appeared on screen because the artist did it in one stroke, it's more like that whole entire head just appeared. No artist can draw lots and lots of separated details in just one stroke.
The AI has significantly more trouble with backgrounds. It will just fully render a bunch of backgrounds until it lands on the correct one. No sketch, no flat colors, nothing.
The problem with a style consistency is still present, and it is more noticable when it's on a video. There will be multiple sketches of the same character in widely different styles until it lands on the one from the prompt picture.
This also happens with reder styles. You will see a picture go from a watercolor render to a painterly one to flat colors and the changes happen quite fast.
It will move from sketch to color back to sketch a lot. Sometimes a part of the "art" will be fully rendered and then suddenly change shape to be what's esentially a different sketch, but still be fully rendered without showing the full process.
When something on the sketch is wrong, instead of fixing just that detail, the AI tends to just fully "sketch" everything again
There is A LOT of color correction before the "drawing" is finished. Although artist do color correct in order to get to a palette they like, it usually isn't done throughout the entire drawing process.
The image will go from being very sharp with thin lines to very blurry with the characteristic melty look of AI generated "art". The color of the lines and background will also change a little. This is mostly visible during the sketch stage.
These are just some of the tings that stand out to me, Please check out this video by actual artist Lola Holliday about it. You cans ee some examples of these AI generated "speedpaints". And you can compare it with real speedpaints as well.
youtube
Please be careful and don't get scammed by these idiots. And also, support real artists please.

Okay, guys, after reading a post by @centrally-unplanned I just took that ACX "AI Turing Test" that Scott Alexander did, and I am screaming, as the kids used to say.
You guys are way, way overthinking this.
I thought I would do better than average, and I guess I did; excluding three pictures I had seen before, I got 31/46 correct.
Not great if you're taking the SAT, but I feel like if I could call a roulette spin correctly 2 times out of 3 I could clean up in Vegas.
So, what is the secret of my amazing, D+ performance?
You have to look at the use of color and composition as tools to draw the eye to points of interest.
AI is really bad at this, when left to its own devices.
For example, here:
Tumblr media
Part of the reason to suspect that this is AI is the "AI house style" and the bad hands that I literally only noticed right this exact second as I was typing this sentence. Even if the hands were rendered correctly, I would still clock this as AI.
The focal point of this piece ought to be the face of the woman and the little dragon she is looking at (Just noticed the dragon's wings don't match up either), but take off your glasses or squint at this for a second:
Your eye is being drawn by the bright gold sparkles on the lower right side of the piece. That particular bright gold is only in that spot on the image, but there's no reason to look there, it's just an upper arm and an elbow. The bright light source highlighting the woman's horn separates it out as a point of interest.
Meanwhile, the weird aurora streaming out of the woman's face on the left side means that it is blending in with the background.
In other words, the way the image is composed, and the subject matter suggest that your eye should be drawn here:
Tumblr media
But the use of color suggests that you should look here:
Tumblr media
That's a senseless place to draw the eye towards! It would be a really weird mistake for a human to make! In fact, I think there's a strong argument that the really close cropped picture of the face of the character is a strong improvement. It's still not a particularly good composition, but at least the color contrast now draws the eye to the proper points.
In fact, I would say that a good reason for my performance not being even better was this alarming statement at the start of the test:
I've tried to crop some pictures of both types into unusual shapes, so it won't be as easy as "everything that's in DALL-E's default aspect ratio is AI".
Uh...
So how about this one:
Tumblr media
This is a lot better anatomically and in terms of the use of color and light to draw the eye towards sensible parts of the painting. The lighting makes pretty good sense in terms of coming from a particular direction and it also draws the eye to effectively to the face and the outstretched hand of the figure.
It's also a really flat and meaningless composition and subject matter that no renaissance artist would have chosen. What is this angel doing, exactly? Our eye is drawn to the face and hand, and the figure is looking off towards the left side, at, uh, what exactly?
But then I thought, "Well, maybe Scott chopped out a giant chunk of the picture, and this is just a detail from, like, the lower right eighth of some giant painting with three other figures that makes total sense"
This makes sense as a piece of a larger human made artwork, but if you tell me, "Nope, that's the whole thing and this is the original, un-cropped picture" I'd go, "Oh, AI, obviously.
All of the ones I had trouble with were AI art with good composition and use of color, and human ones with bad composition and use of color. For example, this one:
Tumblr media
This has three solid points of interest arranged in an interesting relationship with different colors to block them out. I'd say the biggest tells are that the astronauts' feet are out of frame, which is a weird choice, and looking closely now, the landscape and smoke immediately to the right of the ship don't really make sense.
But again; I had to think, "Maybe Scott just cropped it weird and they had feet in the original picture."
Here's another problem:
StableDiffusion being bad at composition is such a known problem that there are a variety of tools which a person can use to manually block out the composition. In fact, let me try something.
I popped open Krita (Which now has a StableDiffusion plugin) and after literally dozens of generations and a couple of different models I landed on ZavyChromaXL with the following prompt:
concept art of two astronauts walking towards a spaceship on an alien planet, with a giant moon in th background, artstation, classic scifi, book cover
And this was the best I could do:
Tumblr media
Not great, but Krita has a tool that lets you break an image into regions which each have different prompts, so I quickly blocked something out:
Tumblr media
Each of those color blobs has a different part of the prompt, so the green region has "futuristic astronauts" the blue is the spaceship, the orange is the moon, grey is the ground and pink is the sky, which gives us:
Tumblr media
Still way too much, so we can use Krita's adaptive patch tool and AI object removal to get:
Tumblr media
I'm not saying it's high art, or even any good, but it's better than the stuff I was getting from a pure prompt, because a human did the composition.
But it's still so dominated by AI processes that it's fair to call it "AI Art".
Which makes me wonder how many of the AI pictures I called out as human made because one of the traits I was looking for, good composition, was in fact, actually made by a human.

honestly a bazillion rounds of applause to you for that pippin hot tea 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 like the vibes are weird and very offputting and the fact that they're standard in all of remy's books speaks volumes tbh
i'm so sick of rc's growing habit of giving most characters of color colored eyes like what you think ethnic features and dark eyes don't make someone "beautiful" enough or some shit??
and don't get me started on the colonizer shit like that LI ian like 🙃🙃🙃

i feel like i’ve been WAITING for the other shoe to drop wrt people’s opinions about watcher for this very reason. not that i think the reaction is completely not understandable but the greater the parasocial relationship, the greater the fallout as soon as public opinion shifts. you don’t have a relationship with these people they’re just content creators, chill
#ready to see all the people coming out of the woodwork to say how they’ve never liked watcher/unsolved/etc#and act like it’s ‘cringe’ now that their fanbase feels ‘betrayed’#it’s great to have a fanbase but parasocial relationships will bite you in the ass every single time#it’s interesting too though because i’ve seen watcher have a LOT of support as they’ve tried to build something separate from buzzfeed#so this is the first time they’re getting real pushback about a decision they’ve made wrt shifting their platform/expanding their brand#so ig we’ll have to see how they react moving forward#but it’s soooo interesting to see how enthusiastically people dump on buzzfeed#AND how many people dump on youtube and how over the years so much of its functionality has been stripped away#how many ads you have to sit through. how much sponsored content there is now. etc#but when they try to do the same thing with youtube that they did with buzzfeed it’s like how dare you not lick their boots#because if you lick their boots and we lick their boots we can watch stuff for free#anyway.#even if you don’t any to say it’s a bad business decision. it’s not like there’s not precedent for it#1) the move away from buzzfeed was successful and 2) what about the dnd shows or whatever#don’t you guys watch those dnd shows that are ‘behind a paywall’#don’t you guys have netflix hulu disney hbo amazon etc ad nauseum that are actually owned by billion dollar corporations#don’t you guys get on your high horses about supporting independent artists all the time#it’s interesting that people will profess to be such big fans!!! and feel like they’re friends!!!!#but how dare they think their work might be worth paying for#idk. idk. it’s entitlement though#sorry for the rant i’m ALSO not trying to blindly defend a bunch of people i don’t know#but you guys are being soooo fucking annoying about it lol#anyway i’m still waiting to see what their response is going to be from here before jumping to conclusions#also to be fair i am biased to be lenient about decisions made by independent filmmakers vs big studios etc#like everybody freaking out about the ai art used in late night with the devil. who cares honestly#‘they should’ve paid a real artist!!’ idk maybe their budget didn’t cover that#i don’t want it to become the industry norm but at the end of the day i would rather see indie shit getting made then only seeing#the big studios (who don’t have equitable practices anyway!!) making shit#but that’s another conversation. just to be transparent about my viewpoint on this kind of thing#maybe controversial but also can’t we have nuance. for once.

i struggled with doing digital art for such a long time because my favorite part of traditional art was the texture and it's insane how long it took to make sense. I used exclusively paint tool sai and ps for ages and i just hated how stuff would turn out and it's probably just the brushes that happen to be default for procreate but figuring out you could have brushes that had the texture in them was life changing
like i used a lot of "texture overlays" which is useful for certain things but i was trying to use smooth brushes to create what style i wanted
anyways enjoy a wip

I made the mistake of looking in the notes of a (good) post made by a big gomens blog about the accusations against Gaiman, and saw two terrible takes on opposite sides of the spectrum.
"Not saying what he did was right, but he just has a 1970s idea of consent." This is just pure bullshit. There's never been a point in time when men didn't understand the concept of consent and violating it for the sake of getting off on feeling powerful; yes, our culture has somewhat changed to take these things more seriously, but abuse and misogyny are not new concepts. You can't say, "but it's just a generational thing!" That just perpetuates rape culture. Abusers are responsible for their own actions. From what I read, he totally knew what he was doing, especially with using his status to have power over women. Full stop.
But that brings me to the next one...
2. "By continuing to engage with his works, you're continuing his celebrity and potentially enabling future assaults." I'm sorry, but it is ridiculous to say fans of a book or TV show are to blame for a man assaulting women, and furthermore, I'd guess that the tumblr gomens fandom is smaller than the overall group of normie, offline fans of his works around the globe, so it's not like people on tumblr still making gomens fan art or whatever are the ones solely keeping his works alive. He's been a famous author for decades, and unfortunately, that's not going to change even if everyone on tumblr never talked about gomens again. I do think people in the fandom have a responsibility to stop sharing any of his posts and interviews, stop tagging fun fandom posts under his name, not invite him to any conventions, not defend him, not financially support him, and inform any female fan who doesn't know about this and wants to go to a book signing or something with him in the future. Women need to know it's not safe to be around him. But other than that, if you've completely separated him from your fandom posts on this fringe, dying website, I really don't think you're hurting anyone. What matters in the real world is people knowing what he did, spreading the word, and keeping him away from fans, not if someone is reading one of his books or watching an adaptation of his work.
Anyway, if you're really concerned about sexual assault, please consider supporting an organization like RAINN. That's a lot more productive than any fandom discourse. I saw posts about organizing a fandom fundraising campaign to the organization, which I think is a great idea.
