Fuuuuuuck, I forgot how many audio dramas the BBC has produced. It's like striking gold. But gold that I only like now that I'm older and can appreciate literature without gagging.
Rn I'm listening to Kafka the Musical. It's very Kafka and has David Tennant.
#im getting older#*shudders*#i tried listening to some of these when i was younger and it just didnt peak my fancy#im not a Shakespeare fan okay?#i like hamlet and some macbeth but thats it#though much ado about nothing has tennant so maybe ill relent#for him#man i forgot how much i loved tennant i tried to steer away cause it feels creepy#i absolutely love his acting. its very good but i dont want to be lumped in to the people that find him “foxy”#kafka the musical#slut.txt

Popular Books I Read and HATED
*Disclaimer: If you like any of these books, slay! I'm happy for you! These are just my own consumer choices, and imo negative book reviews are just as helpful as positive ones!*
This list is not long because I don't actively dislike many books that I read, and I have a very good sense of what I will and will not like, but there are some I had to read/were misled into reading so here we go:
1. Tender Is The Flesh
by Agustina Bazterrica
My rant review is above if you want more details but recently I've seen a few videos that articulate my feelings in a way that I couldn't before so im going to add a few reasons here that were not included in the original post:
It gave very Qanon and general antisemitic vibes: i.e blatant conspiracy made up by the "wealthy liberal elites" to encourage cannibalism for their own enjoyment (I know she's Argentinian however that doesn't mean im not allowed to get the ick from it)
Purposefully inaccurate depictions of meat industry and disrespect for farmers (context: im a vegetarian from farm country with a roommate who works in the cattle industry - Angus beef if you're curious - so im very familiar with the process and cannot say in good conscious that it is all bad -> just support local farmers <3)
world building makes little sense
COWS DO NOT EQUATE TO HUMANS NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO !!!!!!!!
the "disease" doesn't make sense (even if its made up who would believe it)
No themes were treated with the depth nor nuance they require (capitalism, feminism, veganism etc.)
I think thats all I haven't covered but this is the only book I have ever read where my hatred of it continues to grow with each day. I went out of my way and deleted it from my reader and get annoyed every time I see it. And for the record (because yes i'm salty) I didn't hate it because it was too disturbing, in fact I've read and loved worse and ive been an avid horror reader since I was (admittedly too) young. I hate it because there wasn't a well done story underneath the gore. I'll say it loudly for the people in the back GORY HORROR BOOKS STILL DESERVE A GOOD/INTERESTING STORY, especially if you want to try to put complex themes in it. If you cannot write a deep story but you're good at and enjoy gore, write yourself a lil 100 page splatter punk and we can all have a good time <3
Unlike with Tender Is The Flesh I don't have a ton of thought out critical reasons for the rest of these soooooo I'm going to give my highly subjective reasons -> I totally understand why some like them <3
2. The Handmaids Tale
by Margaret Atwood
hated the writing style
It didn't keep my attention
disliked the ending so much I actually threw it across the room <3
3. The Hobbit
by J.R.R Tolkien
hated the writing style
male centered fantasy is not my vibe
my ADHD cannot handle long incredibly descriptive sections in books -> I physically fell asleep multiple times while reading this book
honestly even with the movie I fall asleep every time
0/10 book I want to read
10/10 bedtime story
4. Lord of The Flies
by William Golding
hated the writing style
hated most of the characters (and not in a slay anti-hero way)
was forced to read it in high school and it single handedly sent me into a 4 year reading slump... I missed so many good books because of this and will forever hold a grudge
5. Romeo & Juliet
By William Shakespeare
I'm too jaded and gay to enjoy this -> every single character is so painfully stupid
tbh im just bitter that his (imo) better plays get less love than this one, its way over hyped
but I will give it points for boring me so much that I wrote my first fanfic (Romeo x Mercutio if you're curious ... no its not posted anywhere and it never will be <3)
sidenote -> Shakespeare plays I love incl:
Hamlet (duh im a depressed emo gay on Tumblr)
Macbeth (also duh, witches and female manipulator... need I say more)
Othello (a slow burn for the true crime girlies)
Measure for Measure (absolutely underrated, please please please look into this play -> I saw a production of it and it was incredible)

genuine question, what are some of the "typical american english class" novels? ik about pride and prejudice and like. the great gatsby. but thats it
pride and prejudice was the major one for me, but some other ones are:
to kill a mockingbird
lord of the flies
of mice and men (actually forgot that i read this one but i did) (it's more of a novella)
romeo and juliet, hamlet, macbeth, etc
1984
the great gatsby, as you mentioned
jane eyre
i know why the caged bird sings
fahrenheit 451
#✧— aphe's letters from raymond.#i never had to read most of these actually#these are just the ones i could think of so i may be missing some!!#it might also be regional or vary based on state#some of these books literally got banned where i live so i couldn't read them in my high school classes#(fucking coward ass state government of mine. <3)

quark watches star trek season 1 episode 13
theyre watching macbeth :)
some guy tom has a grudge against the actor playing macbeth?
theyre being sneaky to find him i guess
kirk thinks the guy (kodos) is dead
kodos did something fucked up apparently that kirk and tom witnessed
ok kodos murdered a ton of people on an earth colony and then died
yeah the actor is definitely kodos
kirk thinks kodos's 19 year old daughter is hot
um. its pretty weird that kodos played macbeth and his daughter played lady macbeth.
TOMS DEAD
kirk brought kodos's daughter aboard the enterprise?
"special performance for the crew in exchange for a lift" oooookay
mccoy: "i find jim generally knows what hes doing" no you dont??? you fight with him like every other episode????
"all this power, surging, throbbing, yet under control. are you like that, captain?" no
this show thinks kirk is good at flirting but hes such a dork. hes a pathetic loser man. he needs someone to slap him
ooooooh spocks catching on
apparently kodos did eugenics :|
hiiii uhuraaaaaa
uhura i love you i love your songs
oh shit another eye witness just died
honestly spock seems more genre-savvy than objectively logical. hes not scientific he just knows how star trek is written
kirk and spock and mccoy are extremely dating. mcspirk isnt a ship its a fact
explosive in kirks room 0_0
oh my god he just put it in the garbage chute. that was so stupidly unsafe kirk
hey how come we never saw the actors performance
"what were you 20 years ago?" "younger, captain. much younger" pretty poignant line
confrontation between kirk and kodos was rad
kodos's daughter is pissed
kirk says redemption is real but some harm is irreversible
heheheheheheh i love drama
oh cool were seeing the performance now?
soooooo cool to intercut a failed attempt at revenge murder with a performance of hamlet
.....ohhhhhhh kodos's daughter has been killing all the eyewitnesses thats an awesome twist
this girl is BONKERS
fitting for her to be playing ophelia
:O
kodos jumped in the way to block her shooting kirk hes dead oh my god
this is so melodramatic but i adore it
oh theyre gonna think this is part of the performance wont they
kirk still likes her. no clue why
ok that episode was great

im going to count and list and then probably overanalyse the shakespeare references in season 2 because i have to do something with the english i learnt in school right?!
just finished episode 2, so far we have:
2x01 - "a shakespearian fucking tragedy" (said by nate) 2x01 - "it's like saying macbeth in a theatre" (said by ted) 2x02 - "perchance to dream here" (said by beard) 2x02 - "heavy is the head that wears the crown visor" (said by doc sharon to ted)
without much in depth thought these all kinda have the connection of sleep: "heavy is the head.." is from Henry IV (it's technically "uneasy is the head" but is generally quoted as heavy) and is from a speech about the characters insomnia as a war approaches, "perchance to dream here" is from Hamlet- from hamlets classic "to be or not to be" monologue, and obvs has a connection to sleep and a major theme of macbeth is sleep.
which is interesting, but then again shakespeare wrote a lot about sleep so it could be a coincidence...
the shakespeare references could also all be hinting at nates betrayal at the end of s2 since thats a theme that shakespeare wrote about in almost all of his plays. then again i cant help but feeling like the references probably mean more than just that.
see you tomorrow for more of me overanalysing the shakespeare references in ted lasso! (probably in more depth because the more references i get the more i can hopefully find some sort of pattern?)
#maybe one of the writers just really likes shakespeare#im excited to watch 2x03 tomorrow to see if there are any more epic shakespeare refs#i can think of two more off the top of my head in s2 but im sure theres more#ted lasso#nathan shelley#coach beard#doctor sharon

1,2,11, and 12 for the book post
Not sure, potentially the Hobbit I read it a lot as a kid. Eragon is up there also as a kid. Dune as well. But I think the most likely is Percy Jackson, I loved those books.
I dont rank things, but heres 5 books I really like: Leigh Bardugo's Six of Crows, NK Jemisen's Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, Neil Gaiman Trigger Warning, Frank Herbert's Dune and Alan Moore's Watchmen("but thats a graphic novel" I do not care, I don't care, I am the devil from the bible I make the rules)
11. I have never been much of a non fiction reader. I struggle with reading unless I am hyperfocused. When I was a kid I memorized dinosaur dictionaries and loved a lot of those like behind the scenes or history books that had the white cover and lots of pictures. I enjoyed what I read of Elizabeth Freeman's Time Binds for Queer Relativity research this year thats probably the most recent nonfiction I have read. I have had to read a lot of nonfiction in the form of research papers and what not for uni and for videos so I don't seek it out on my own. Most non-fiction I consume now is in video essays.
12. Hamlet, Macbeth(though both of those we would read aloud in class and perform the scenes to a degree), The Great Gatsby and The English Patient were some of the few readings I remember liking. I'm sure there are some others but my memory's not the best.

okay but no im thinking about this again
maybe its all the shakespeare because of the richjake bapo au and thats literally the only thing they study in iwwv
i dont want to like assign them all iwwv characters (aside from Jake and Chloe mirroring Richard and Meredith, toxic royal pains absolutely obsessed with one another and refusing to see how terrible they are)
but i want to put them in a scenario where they met like the characters of iwwv
applying for one of the most prestigious universities to persue theatre
a university that treats the world of the arts with the intesity of cult-like behaviour
the group are lucky to make it this far
and they are so so close with each other, nothing can break them apart
they let their characters consume them, losing a bit of themselves in the process of shedding their characters. sometimes they lose themselves entirely when they're given a role to play. its not chloe they're talking to, it's lady macbeth. its not brooke they're talking to its viola. its not jake they're talking to, its romeo.
and they're obsessed with each other, there's no secrets in the tower. not really. not when they've gone through so much together, and not when their teachers force them to pry themselves open and lay out their vulnerabilities for the others to examine
we have jake and chloe oh so obsessed with each other, paired up as love interests for every show ever since they started. they took the roles they had been given, fell too deep into their characters, and they never fully emerged from their first show together. and it doesn't help that they're being thrown the same roles time and time again. they're so used to being intimate with each other during rehearsals or classes or a show, they just carried over that obsession and infatuation into this intoxicating relationship
(but, of course, they're not really in love with each other, are they? no, they're in love with the idea of them. the idea of this perfect relationship. i mean, there's a reason why the relationship between jake's hamlet and rich's horatio was so intense. or chloe's olivia and brooke's viola/cesario)
they lose themselves too much into this world they have created for themselves that perhaps, maybe, it has some unwanted consequences. and they won't want to admit that they've done something bad.
maybe I'll make an if we were villains au /j
#lohst.txt#will i write this?#tempting#very tempting#need to finish the bapo au first#and this currently has no plot#if i went through with this im unsure if id keep the whole murder plot#because im unsure of who would die and who would kill them#but i want to keep the overall vibes#theatre kids too obsessed with each other and their craft they're basically in a cult#or maybe this is because i want to write even more complicated royal pains/richjake/pinkberry

Billy tries to explain Shakespeare to Steve for a class but it results in Steve completely missing the point & focusing in on his dirty jokes only. And then the worst part is he starts figuring out how to make dirty jokes in old English, and will not stop.
ok so this reminded me of a poster i found in my grandfathers basement (he was an old english teacher) that had a bunch of shakespearean insults on it
this⤵️ (sorry the pic is kinda wonky it’s technically two pictures together)
ANYWAYYYY
billy is a sweet little nerd boy who enjoys reading and finds comfort in the complexities of shakespeare.
steve, however, finds it to be the bane of his existence.
billy isn’t dumb though. and he knows steve isn’t either. so he devised a plan.
he would show steve funny insults and dirty jokes in the stories so that they’d be more enticing to steve, though it backfired in his face when thats all steve cared about while reading.
some of his favorite dirty jokes include:
PYRAMUS: O kiss me through the hole of this vile wall!
THISBE: I kiss the wall's hole, not your lips at all.
(the wall symbolizes a man, if you’re catching my drift)
(he also probably uses something similar to distract billy) (it doesn’t work)
CHIRON: Thou hast undone our mother.
AARON: Villain, I have done thy mother.
(would now be referred to as a ‘yo mama’ joke)
some random insults he would like are:
‘Away, you three-inch fool’
(he says this to billy. billy looks at him. laughed smiles. then says ‘oh you know that’s not true, sweetheart’)
‘More of your conversation would infect my brain’
(probably said by billy to steve)
‘Aroint thee: go away, rump-fed runion: slut’
(steve doesn’t know what the hell it means but he knows rump is butt and the word slut is kinda funny)
‘Thou cream faced loon’
(😏)
ANYWAY
billy would totally have like a big book of all shakespeare’s plays and a few poems so he would show steve some dirty jokes (they’re highlighted) and hope to entice him into the world of reading.
except steve doesn’t care for that shit AT ALL. because steve “watched back to the future and all he got out of it was ‘the son tried to bang his mom’” harrington wouldn’t care about the context. he just likes the funny bits.
and he’s sitting in english and they’re discussing like romeo and juliet and steve starts saying lines from macbeth and hamlet and other plays and the teacher knows what he’s saying but the other knuckleheads of the class couldn’t give a shit.
but billy (and probably robin) are snickering in the back of the room.
billy’s regretting showing it to steve but it’s also what got him into reading in the first place so there was a method to his madness, it just doesn’t work for steve.

would u be willing to post the list of references u used for parm?? bc ive caught a few but like. ion kno if i caught all of them!!!!
💀 yes it’s very embarrassing tho but u asked for it. this list includes like 1 greek myth but no others since this is already too long aksbwndnaj
it’s rly mostly shakespeare im,,,i love shakespeare i live for shakespeare i die for shakespeare shndnwmsiajs aNYWAY!!! (& yes before you ask i DO know all the mentioned quotes by heart 💀)
from shakespeare, obviously:
1. summary, “the course of true love never did run smooth” (a midsummer night’s dream);
2. “all the world’s a stage” (as you like it);
3. “is love a tender thing? it is too rough, too rude, too boisterous, and it pricks like thorn.” (romeo & juliet);
4. “be ruled by me/ forget to think of her” (romeo & juliet) (i think this is one of my fav quotes of like all time lmao);
5. “worthy prince, i know ‘t” (king lear (its my fav play hehe));
6. “love, and be silent” (king lear);
7. in the end, when corpse grabs the skull & questions what should he do, it’s a reference to hamlet’s famous monologue!
from shakespeare, but not obviously at all!:
1. the submergion of persephone by the nymph is an allusion to ophelia’s drowning, as once persy re-emerges she sees hades (the god of the underworld). no death is actually involved in this, i was just thinking of hamlet en général & i was like yes ophelia! makes sense since later hades is alluded to be hamlet!:)
2. “an inadequate answer. it tells you nothing. you try again” is an allusion to “nothing comes of nothing. speak again” from king lear!
3. “‘she’s a witch’ [...] half expecting her sisters to jump out the shadows” is a reference to the witches in macbeth!!:)
4. persy’s “unhand me” is also an allusion to hamlet’s “unhand me, gentleman. by heaven, i’ll make a ghost of him that let’s me.”
4. “damn you, stars!” is “then i defy you, stars!” from romeo & juliet:)
5. “you’re angry, feasting on that anger like savage men feast on meat” is a reference to volumnia’s “anger’s my meat; i sup upon myself” from coriolanus.
other authors:
1. from lord byron’s cain: “are ye happy?”/ “We are mighty”/ “are ye happy?”/ “no: art thou?”
2. some poetry from sappho!! as fitting 💗
3. pygmalion’s myth from ovid! pygmalion falls in love w his statue & it comes to life, similarly to how aphrodite seeing persy stops mimicking a statue!😽
4. everyone’s fav euripides “i’ll take care of you.” / “it’s rotten work.” / “not to me. not if it’s you.”
5. the very last line is derived from e. e. cummings’ “unloves the heavenless hell and homeless home”: “(eternity being so sans until twice i have lived forever in a smile)”
this whole fic is written circular—starting from persephones pov & ending w hades along w both of them being the representatives of the natural cycle of life and death! and yk what?? i think thats p neat.
there are also sum visuals i kept thinking abt whilst writing, namely klimt’s the kiss when writing aphrodite’s kiss & solomon’s sappho & erinna , ofc boticelli’s birth of venus makes an appearance also with dite. if you’re curious to how gods drunk on nectar looked, i imagined scenes like alma-tedama’s the roses of heliogabalus, first meeting of corpse & yn is inspired by simmon’s hermia & lysander , persephone emerging from the water was both godward’s girl with a mirror and ives’ undine. ig they count as refs as well?
well anyway this is all i recall might update it if i remember sumtin else lol srr for the long post 😔 also!! how many did u catch?! 😼
#thank god shakespeares dead hed sue me so fucking quick 💀#jk ily king 💗#parm#persephone: a re imagined myth#nonnie#english majors wya?!

Remus: you’re going to be fine
Remus: i’m messaging a friend. maybe she’ll agree to tutor you
James: bless u
Peter to Remus: fuck u
Remus: what on earth did i do to deserve this
Peter sent to Remus three screenshots
Peter: he hasn’t shut up about her dainty little wrists yet
Peter: u did this
Remus: oh my god what did i do
Remus to Lily: how did it go with James?
Lily: I think I found the problem
