eddie nodded and smiled at you before overdramatically making a show of “zipping his lips shut,” which only made you laugh and roll your eyes.

over the past few months of you two dating, you fell into an almost weekly pattern where eddie would play new albums for you and always make you mixtapes as ways to introduce you to his favorite bands and artists; which made sense because he loved music. and maybe you didn’t like every single song he showed you, but you loved the happy smile he’d get on his face as he played you something that you hadn’t heard of and talked about a specific instrumental part or lyric of the song.  

you were a little different, you had other things that you’d drone on and on about— things that if it was anyone else eddie wouldn’t have necessarily found interesting, but just hearing you talk about it made it interesting to him. he could listen to you talk about your favorite book or some old movie you watched for forever. 

these little differences between you two were probably one of your favorite parts about your dynamic. 

things slightly changed last week— eddie wanted you to make him a mixtape. it was a request that slightly surprised you, but you of course did it anyway. 

“okay, so there’s not, like, one genre or whatever on this, it’s kinda a little bit of everything. just some songs i’ve liked for a while and more recently, and some remind me of you and us. i think i did, like, twelve songs. i can’t fully remember now–”

eddie stopped you mid-ramble with a kiss on the cheek. “just play it, sweetheart.”

you grabbed the tape from him and got up from his bed, placing it in the tape deck of his stereo and pressing play before settling back and sitting across from him. 

seconds later, the opening beats of sos by abba started playing and eddie smiled amusingly at you. “abba?”

“no questions or judgements until the end,” you told him seriously; well, as serious as you could with your boyfriend smiling at you. “just enjoy the music, munson.”

he nodded, a smile still on his face, as one of his hands started absentmindedly stroking your knee. you were wearing his hellfire t-shirt and a dark pair of his boxers; you always liked being in his clothes when you were spending the night at his place, and seeing you wear anything of his always made him fold. he would’ve been on you in an instant, kissing your lips and then finding that certain spot on your neck that always made you giggle, like he did most nights, if you two weren’t already doing this. 

when the song went from abba to sweet dreams by eurythmics, eddie wanted to say something teasing but he didn’t because he knew that he would only receive a playful scolding or eye roll from you in response.

he ended up liking the queen and tears for fears songs you put on the tape, but what he enjoyed the most was admiring you, watching as you bopped your head along to the beat or mumbled some of the lyrics. in all honesty, he barely paid attention to most of the songs playing, it was too hard. you looked too adorable and that was all he really wanted to focus on. 

he wanted to commit this entire moment to memory. 

the last song that played was another one by abba, gimme! gimme! gimme!, which felt like a full circle kind of moment, and you didn’t make any move to grab the tape once it stopped. 

“so, should i start working on volume two?” you asked playfully as you scooched closer to your boyfriend, letting your knees bump his and reaching out to grab one of his hands. 

he only leaned in and kissed you in response. it was slow and sweet and he practically pulled you into his lap in the process.

you smiled at him when you pulled back a bit to catch your breath. his hand was still cupping your cheek and your lips ghosted over his as you spoke. “i’ll just take that as a yes.”

"Come on Teppei, give me a clue here! What would genuinely make you happy?" you insist, leaning towards the tall brunette.

He looks at you, eyebrows furrowed as if your question doesn't make any sense at all. Well, it probably doesn't to him, if you have to be honest with yourself. Teppei has always been a bit odd, which, you have to admit, makes loving him awfully hard sometimes. Not feeling wise, of course – it is easy to fall in love with him. You did in a matter of days, which is quite embarrassing to admit.

You've never been a believer in love at first sight. It was cheesy and unrealistic, and you lived your whole life in the belief that anyone who said otherwise was delusional. How can you feel love – which is without a doubt the most complicated and powerful feeling a living being can feel – so quickly? Well, leave it to Teppei Kiyoshi to be the exception that proves the rule.

He didn't do anything special, just being himself, which is, naturally, already out of this world. That tall dummy, too good for his own good, always knew how to get what he wanted out of people.

And what Teppei has always desired from you, is for you to let him be your man. You can't really tell what it is exactly about him – his endless kindness, the way he always protects his loved ones, his soft chocolate eyes looking at you like ancient civilisations would look at the stars. It's probably all of him: his tall and intimidating figure that surprisingly offers the best hugs, his big hands that keep yours warm, his messy brown locks that falls in his kind eyes, his pink lips that stretch in a heartwarming smile. It's how he talks about his grandparents with so much love, and how he spends hours on the court because the most fun he'll ever have is while playing basketball.

Fuck, do you love Teppei Kiyoshi.

Of course you want to make him happy. In all the love languages possible, you're ought to let him know that he is your place of solace, the warmth of a spring sun in your heart. He's your one and only, and you have to give back for all the greatness that he is.

"Would you like a puppy, maybe? You'd look great as a pet dad" you brainstorm, trying to find something – anything – that will make him endlessly happy.

He chuckles, pulling you over his lap as you ramble.

"Should I welcome you home everyday in an apron and nothing else? No, that's too pervy. Unless..." you raise an eyebrow, seemingly considering this option in all seriousness.

The basketball player laughs, the sweet sound rumbling from the depth of his chest, and you can't help but giggle a little too. He smiles, finger twisting around a strand of your hair as he gives you a soft look. It makes you blush, he kinda looks like a dad about to teach life to his child.

"What is it, now?"

"You're cute when you ramble like that, s'all." He confesses, bringing your fingers to his lips to kiss them.

You sigh, leaning in closer as you ask him again, with unwavering intent, the question to which you have yet to get an answer.

"Teppei, I swear to god I'll lose my mind if you don't tell me what would make you happy."

"Hm? Isn't it obvious?" He tilts his head.

You're slightly pissed; no dummy, it isn't obvious! Teppei's mind never works in normal ways, so what may be a given to him is only that: a given to him only.

"Cute little thing that pouts for me" he mutters, lips taunting yours before he pulls you into a kiss.

You hum, melting in the sweet honey of his lips, the way he knows where to grab you, his touch soft and firm at the same time, while you instinctively part your lips for him. You can't even utter a thought at the way his warm tongue glides other yours; and here you are, nothing but a puddle of love for Teppei Kiyoshi.

"It's you. You're what makes me genuinely happy."

His seriousness is almost funny – Teppei has a knack for being serious in the oddest moments. But this time, you can't help the pounding in your chest at his words. Now that he says it, well yeah, it's obvious what makes him happy. You think for a moment if you should debate a bit, but you figure that it's better not to.

Teppei is smarter than you, so it's for your own good to shut up and accept it as an undeniable truth.

I've been reflecting recently on why I love Bad Batch SOOOO much (no, seriously, I've been obsessed since the show first started airing and my obsession isn't fading anytime soon) while also still having some issues with the finale. And I think it's because the story reminds me so much of my own family. (Note: my ramblings in this post do get personal.)

I loved Clone Force 99 from the moment they were introduced in The Clone Wars. A band of clone misfits who are instantly recognized as different but also are close to each other and work together seamlessly with plenty of banter? Give me more! The amazingly resilient Echo is brought back and of course joins them? YES!!! So when it was announced that the Bad Batch would be getting their own show, I was thrilled! Yay for more crazy sibling shenanigans!

And then season 1 happened, with the squad almost immediately fracturing amidst all the changes occurring with the rise of the Empire. Ooof, hello reality.

I grew up in a large family with lots of siblings. We were all super close (and kinda crazy 😂) growing up; as we've become adults, however, personality differences have led some of my siblings to stop talking to each other which then bled over into them not talking to anyone else in the family. Not gonna lie, the past few years have been really hard, trying to figure out how best to navigate things so as to not push any of my siblings away but also give them their space.

Needless to say, I saw my family reflected in the Bad Batch. The Bad Batch were so close for so long, and then started falling apart. When Crosshair not only wouldn't go with his family in the season 1 finale but also seemed to be rejecting Hunter's statement that they could pursue different paths without being enemies, my heart broke even more. I know it will be a long time - if ever - that my own family members all reconcile with each other, so I really wanted this little clone family, at least, to get that chance. (Living out my hopes and dreams in fiction, I guess?)

Season 2 continued the season 1 trend of showing us both sides in such a sympathetic and nuanced way. I like to try keeping an open mind and seeing a situation from different angles/POV, both in real life and with fictional stories; so I think a big part of the reason why I adore this show is because it gave us the opportunity to consider both the main squad's AND Crosshair's perspectives, which honestly was a great exercise for me over the past few years in keeping an open mind regarding my own siblings' experiences and opinions (even if I don't always agree with them). And I was still holding out hope that this little clone family would have a chance to reconcile and be whole again.

And then Tech fell.

I'm crying right now just thinking about it.

(Tech was my favorite OG CF99 member since the moment he first stepped on screen, so his death would have been excruciatingly painful regardless; but the fact that he apparently died before the family could be fully reconciled... Well, I already know such a scenario - someone dying before reconciliation - is sadly possible with my own family, but having it happen to this fictional family just hit WAY too close to home, and I would have been equally devastated about this if any other Bad Batcher had died.)

Going into season 3, I knew there was a chance Tech wouldn't come back, much as I wanted him to. I LOVED watching Crosshair build a relationship with Omega, rejoin the family and reconcile with his other brothers, but... Tech is his brother too! With each passing episode, it was a struggle between hoping Tech would come back so the family would actually get their chance to be whole again, while also looking for any closure, any indication that Tech's memory and legacy would be acknowledged and honored by all the siblings he'd sacrificed himself for. I wanted Tech to be alive to get his own happy ending for his own sake, but if a comeback wasn't happening I wanted his life and sacrifice to clearly serve as an influence and motivation for his family. And for his siblings' sake (ESPECIALLY Crosshair's), if Tech was really dead and there wasn't going to be a full reunion, at least let the whole family heal from the loss, at least let the family honor the brother who gave everything to give them a chance to reunite.

The finale concluded, and I realized we got neither: there had been no full family reunion, and there had been no real closure/healing for the family regarding Tech's sacrifice either. (And I don't think it's at all unreasonable to have assumed the show would give us one or the other.)

Look, I'm one of those people who walked into Rogue One assuming it would have a happy ending. (Oh, those days when I was so young and naive...) So let me tell you, that ending traumatized me almost as badly as the ending of ASM2.

But, while other tragic/bittersweet endings have shaken me, it was the Bad Batch finale that literally left me feeling physically ill for days afterwards. Like, I was so relieved that everyone else lived? But it was so strange to be told it was a "happy ending" when, out of the entire family, only Omega kinda sorta maybe (if you squint) had a moment to honor their fallen brother? The family goes through all that trauma and loss and we end the show without actually resolving it, without the family actually healing? Tech's sacrifice made the Batch's eventual retirement possible, and the show won't even just say it? And to add insult to injury, after an entire season with the narrative teasing the possibility of Tech still being alive with CX2 being the forerunning explanation for it, it's all "well, we're still not going to provide any real closure on this plot point, but aren't you glad you can maybe assume Tech ISN'T CX2 since Hunter ran that sucker through without blinking an eye? Look, happy ending!"

I'm still stuck in "season 1" with my own family, so watching this story play out and ultimately conclude with this fictional family not getting full closure regarding one of their own siblings who had never been anything but supportive of all of them was... unsatisfying, to say the least. I LOVE that the clones, who were created by Palpatine to be discarded, managed to (unknowingly) strike a significant blow against Palpatine's plans. I LOVE that Omega and some of the other clones were able to choose to live peacefully on Pabu. I LOVE that Crosshair came back to his family. Still, I will never get over how Tech was handled - both the character himself and the characters he was closest to.

And I think this is part of the reason why I really hope the Bad Batch's on-screen appearances aren't completely over yet - and why, even without factoring in all the narrative ambiguity in season 3, I'm still rooting for Tech to return. Tech himself definitely deserved better, and his family deserved better too.

So there's my long-winded explanation for why there's not a single day that goes by that I don't think about this show 😅

Of course Shinobu only wants the best for (Reader) so seeing that they are going after this forgetful and blunt boy didn’t feel like the best decision on (Reader)‘s part.

And when she sees that Muichiro might see (Reader) more than a friend, oh she’s livid

She thinks (Reader) is way too young to be involved with a relationship like that! She barley allowed (Reader) to become a Hashira at their age, but this was crossing the line!

Ever since then Shinobu’s been sort of passive aggressive towards Muichiro, each time he came to the Butterfly Mansion to get his wounds treated, Shinobu always seemed quiet and her smile a lot more strained as she asked about him and (Reader)

Of course Muichiro began talking before quickly trailing off, his mind wandering. The only thing that brought him back was the slight stinging sensation from how tightly Shinobu had been wrapping his wounds-(If this is a one shot like the first one, please add this part! Idk I think it would be funny😆)

But Shinobu was only being over-protective, always putting herself between (Reader) and Muichiro, most of the time with it ending with Muichiro eventually wandering off since he had forgotten who he was speaking to in the first place-

Shinobu had been picking up on… things.

She had been observing the way her younger sibling would always conveniently disappear during lunch, and how they would always get just a little bit happier at the mention of a specific mist hashira.

And that irked Shinobu to no end.

One, she felt as if [Name] was far too young to be in a romantic relationship. And two, him? Seriously? Of all people?

She would almost rather [Name] fall in love with… Genya… or literally anyone else.

Not only was he crass and rude, he was also rather irresponsible. Shinobu couldn’t count on both hands the amount of times she has had to patch up wounds of his that could’ve been easily avoided.

Ever since she had learned about their mutual interest in each other, Shinobu had been more careless in how gentle she was when patching up the amnesiac boy. She would be talking to him and “accidentally” tighten the bandages just tight enough to elicit a hiss from the boy. She’d throw in a sarcastic, “Oh sorry, did that hurt?” before continuing.

Every time she heard [Name] ramble about Muichiro, and vice versa, it took everything she had not to roll her eyes. Whenever she saw the two alone, she would always approach them with a very strained smile.

And if Muichiro ever got a little too close to [Name] for Shinobu’s comfort, she’d would suddenly need their help with something, urgently.

And if that didn’t work, she’d physically get in between them. She would do her best to keep a polite tone of voice, but it was always clear that she was running thin on patience.

Thankfully, for Muichiro’s sake, he would always get quickly distracted and go off to do something else.

Shinobu also really like to “joke” that she was always in need of volunteers to try her new medicines, to test if they were safe to use on patients or if they would have any bad side effects.

Oh, and if Muichiro were to ever fall sick? Oh he’s getting the grossest tasting medicine that Shinobu has in stock.

So long story short, Muichiro better mature up a bit and wait until he and [Name] were a bit older if he ever wanted to Shinobu to even consider letting him court them.

A/N: it was really fun to imagine Shinobu reacting to Mui and [Name]. She’d def get really petty too.

Aw hey glad you liked that art! I really wanna make some more comics with spiderverse characters soon. And I just love Gwen and Peni as characters and what their dynamic could be like.

That being said, you've REALLY come to the right place for some headcanons for these two goobers! You've done my heart good with this ask ^_^

Peni had been a part of the society longer than Gwen, but she hadn't remained in touch with any of the OG spider-gang. I wanna read up on Peni's comics one of these days so I can learn more, but I do think Peni had a nasty canon event happen in the past year before Gwen joined HQ. Peni didn't want to talk to anyone, but then one day was at HQ after dark for whatever reason (maybe she just dropped off a successfully captured anomaly). Since Gwen apparently lived at HQ, she was up and find Peni curled up silently crying. Gwen didn't know what to say, so she just started carding her fingers lightly through Peni's hair. Peni let out a little gasp and then leaned into the touch without ever looking at Gwen in the eye. Neither of them said a word. They just sat there. Gwen offered to let Peni sleepover in her HQ dorm room, but Peni declined. Peni avoided Gwen even more after that night. Idk I don't think any of the spider gang from the first film really kept in touch in the past year. I'm sure that changes after ATSV though.

Now after BTSV however, Peni would really open up about everything. And Gwen's now learned a thing or two about being moral support. Peni's (jesus the typos) constantly showing up at Gwen's window at ungodly hours, just an absolute bawling mess, the poor thing. All Gwen has to do is open her arms out wordlessly and Peni just hides her face in Gwen's abdomen and grips her shirt and everything. Gwen says very little, just coos and a bunch of quiet little "it's okay"'s. Gwen's way of comforting people is like she's trying to calm a spooked cat. This is all new for her, but she doesn't seem to realize that she's kinda a natural lol. This time, when Gwen offers to let Peni sleepover for the night, Peni doesn't hesitate.

Gwen spoils Peni rotten lol. Whenever higher authority complains about Peni's antics, or tells on her to Gwen, she'll ALWAYS side with Peni. Miguel could go to Gwen complaining that her little spitfire is hacking into the watches to send unflattering pictures of him to the entire society and Gwen will go "omg she's literally just a bby why can't you just leave her alone."

They do watchathons of bad movies late at night to make fun of them like ya do with ya homies.

Gwen CONSTANTLY forgets that Peni is 15. Like she doesn't seriously think she's a toddler, but she lets the super short anime girl look fool her into thinking she's 12 or something. So like if Gwen sees Peni maneuvering a vehicle, she freaks out for a minute before she remembers, or if Peni is about to a watch a PG-13 movie and Gwen will FLAIL for a hot second.

Gwen hands down a lot of her old clothes that don't fit her anymore to Peni.

Gwen doesn't understand any of Peni's smart sciencey talk, they both know it, but Gwen gives Peni's ramblings her full undivided attention anyway.

(I actually posted this one recently) Sometimes Peni will just walk up to Gwen and stretch her arms out, to signal that she wants Gwen to deadlift carry her by her pits like she's a cat. When Gwen does it, Peni just lets her head hang back and her body go limp like she's dead or smth. Gwen just holds her out like that and goes about her day like normal for half an hour.

they both share an obsession with Pokémon. They make fan covers of the music together.

a night at poe's masquerade

Last night I made a quick tweet about how I think Persona games (particular from Persona 3 onwards) tend to be fundamentally conservative games. In worlds filled with magic powers, shadow selves, and literal gods there's an understanding that many of the most villainous people you can know are folks in positions of social/political power who weaponize their status in order to prey on those beneath them. This is a particular focus of Persona 5 but it extends even back to back to a game like Persona 2 and characters like Tatsuzou Sudou. Although these games acknowledge the social structures that lead to particularly vicious kinds of abuse, there is tendency for our protagonist to then fold themselves into those power structures. In games that focus less on real-life political allegory, there's still pattern of protagonists eventually accepting the societal roles that they're initial chafing against. It's a very common occurrence in the series. clockwork!

Persona 4 is the chief culprit here. Yukiko struggles with the idea that her presumed inheritance of the Amagi Inn is an imposition on her life but makes peace with that fact and eventually prepares herself for that role. Chie confronts Adachi, shocked that anyone who chose to be a police officer would do so for selfish reasons or betray the ideal image she holds of that job. Though confronted with the ways in which the system enabled Adachi's murders, she ultimately decided that she wants to become a police officer. Just as some examples. there's more. it's a fraught game in many ways

(I'm not gonna talk about Naoto. That's a minefield. as a trans critic people ask what I think about Naoto quite often. my answer is I like Naoto quite a bit and while I appreciate the queer read I don't need her story to be actually about transness. my tongue in cheek deep position here is that I think she's the damn coolest thing in the Dancing All Night opening movie. absolute fire!)

Persona fans are totally reasonable human beings. by which I mean that they might be the most electric and fuckin' absurd fandom I've ever encountered. While some people agreed with my read of the series, many others swarmed in. Which is fine enough. That's just what happens when you're visible on Twitter. I don't really have an interest in outlining the series in gross detail although, contrary to many accusations, I have played all the mainline games. One thing that can never be hurled my way is a suggestion that I don't play videos games. This criticism doesn't arise out of nowhere though I admit I didn't exactly expect it to become a trending topic floating in the "For You" tab. I was tweeting before bed.

Lesson learned! this fandom is wild! So it goes!

I've been thinking about people's responses and I want to venture into fraught territory to talk about a particularly bad habit I see from many fans. Which I think can be extended to things like ongoing debates about localization as much as they can apply to this little tempest in a teapot. Which is that I've grown somewhat concerned with he ways in which RPG fans (intentionally or not) exoticize Japan as a means to defend their favorite games from critique. It's kinda bad!

and I'm gonna risk a ramble exploring the topic… and I wonder how tumblr in 2024 will compare in reaction to hellscape of twitter

Something you often encounter in these discussions is an implication (sometimes a direct suggestion) that it is impossible to really engage with Japanese media as a westerner. That there's too many layers of nuance and too many centuries of ingrained tradition for anyone who has not engaged in lengthy study on the topic to penetrate. Often, this is framed as a desire to simply put things in cultural contexts. respect it and give due seriousness! Which is fine. I absolutely think if you wanna talk about something like the portrayal of the Japanese justice system in Judgement, it probably helps to… y'know… know details about the Japanese justice system. If you want to talk about how a game approaches gender, an understanding of certain social mores is important. No one debates this; it's important to understand art as arising from specific material conditions and places.

This is not really the approach people take however. Instead there is an insistence that the cultural difference between Japan and western nations is essentially insurmountable. Which has some bad implications. I think people are well meaning when they're like "hey, you gotta watch this YouTuber talk about Shintoism and JRPG boss fights for over an hour" but it comes at the cost of painting the culture as something of a puzzle to solve. and make no mistake: I'm glad anyone is doing the work but there's a bit of strangeness at play when folks are like "well you're American" and then tell me to watch criticism also made by Americans. especially since I do have a educational background that includes the study of world religions. i've studied plenty of this! and it's not impossible for me to have grasped.

the world is beautiful and nuanced and specific and full of vibrancies. but these things are not so singular that we can't connect with them or come to know them. and those nuances and specifics and vibrances don't create a protective ward around works. if anything, they're invitations to explore something new. if I walk away from Persona with a position that you don't agree with I promise that it's not something that's happened in haste. It used to be my job to think about games. and I've thought about Persona a lot! it's not inaccesible.

When we start to paint a culture as being particularly foreign we inherently exoticize it. We drape a degree of mystery over it which implies there is no universal connections found in art. Of course the concept of "police" is different in Japan to some extent as is the expectations that go into inheriting a family business. yes, the social nuances of a classroom differ. But Japan is not so alien to the western critic that we can't look at popular fiction and spot patterns. I certain don't need a 17 anime consumer to write me an essay on honne and tatemae or whatever in order to understand what's going on in the Midnight Channel. It's an easily observable truth that Persona often identifies issues within Japan society while also (particularly in Persona 5's case) concluding that these problems are not a consequence of specific power structures but rather moral failings of certain bad individuals. That's the text. Even when it wants to suggest otherwise.

Here's a little snippet from Persona 5. On face value, it seems to contradict what I'm saying. "Harper, how can you say that it only cares about individuals when it outright says that society itself needs to be addressed!?" DO YOU EVEN PLAY THESE GAMES YOU BITCH?! The answer is that the game does not have a model or idea of what it means to change society except vaguely to inspire people to more individual action. be nicer. stand up for yourself, speak your truth, do things for your own reasons. which has a radical element to it in the context to be sure but we've spent a huge portion of the game seeing how the abuse of power, particularly power placed in certain positions and social strata

a change of mindset is good but… is that sufficient? I'm not entirely convinced. not if this game want to truly deliver on everything it has explored. (side note, a lot of folks were like "why are you focusing on p5 so much here?" and the answer is that it's recent, representative of the series' values from the last decade or so, and because I'm a tired adult in their 30s who has stuff to do and isn't obligated to make a 300 tweet long thread breaking down multiple scripts. if you want me to do that labor, you better pay me for my time. otherwise I don't care to appease fan who have no plans of truly entertaining what I'd do anyway. no breakdown I do could please them)

but you fight Yaldabaoth Harper! You kill the collective gestalt representative of the status quo!. okay sure but the metaphorical battle falters as the game ultimately imagines many of our heroes (for instance Makoto, who also decides to become a cop even after her sister leaves the profession to become a defense attorney) are content to slide into the power structures as they exist. they've simply become "good apples" in the same basket that held the bad ones What does it matter if you kill the metaphor when you don't carry through elsewhere? It's not simply some vague human desire to be exploited that created the various monstrous villains we face throughout the game. There's real material circumstances, systems and long-held powers that gave them the carte blanche that enabled their abuses! Be they financial, political, or even sexual.

We might layer nuances on top of this of course. Notions of reticence to change or valuing of tradition, attitudes towards elders. But when we do so it's important be careful. When fans imply impenetrabilities in the works by virtue of cultural difference, there's a risk of veering into a kind of Orientalism. One which mystifies the culture and turns it into a kind of "other." Distant, strange. This sometimes comes paired with a kind of infantilization of creators but that's a different though similarly fraught topic that I think is particularly best left in the hands of the creators themselves. I'm not the person to talk about that!

Nevertheless, a frustrating part of the response to my tweet today has been a rush to say "This work functions that makes it necessarily elide your ability to critique it."

I'll be an ass and generalize. It's mostly people with Persona avatars making this suggest. That Persona, as a Japanese work, is imbued with an ineffable quality that magically allows it to side-step what's ultimately a pretty timid conclusion. Many of these folks are younger players, self-identified as such in profiles, who clearly have a deep connection to the series. It means something to them. But I'd rather they simply say "hey, I found this thing particularly moving at an important moment in my life" rather than conjure an impassable ocean between myself (or really anyone) and the work in the event they find flaws.

Otherwise, you just get this:

Stories are not merely about what happens on the journey. The destination does matter. It means something when the king grabs his shining sword and fights off the orc invaders or whatever. A value system is suggested Similarly, it does means something when Chie becomes a cop. (This is just a shorthand example mind you! But you hopefully get the idea!)

I don't think games or any work of art need us to defend them. The trap of fandom is that you often turn to any possible means to justify what you love. For Persona, a series which does have the decency to explore cultural issues, that same cultural specificity is often weaponize by fans (largely western fans even!) to deflect certain problems. This process inadvertently portrays that culture as a mystery, a shrouded thing that we cannot ever criticize. It's one thing to dig into some of those contextual specifics but it's another all-together to imply these specifics provide a mean to abrogate certain analyses. and I think navigating the line between due deference and something deeper and stranger seems to be something many of the fans reacting to me... have not managed. I had a peer talk to me about this situation and their feeling was that the animated members of the fandom that were coming at me, many of whom are self-identified as young and western, were kinda treating Japan like it was a land of elves. which it's not! it is a place on Earth and yes we need to take strides to understand and respect certain specificities... but we can't mystify an entire people. especially if the purpose is to turn those people and their culture into a shield. a means to justify and validate the specialness you see in a franchise.

I call Persona conservative because it cannot imagine a world in any other shape that what we have right now. God dies but nothing actually changes. I don't think it's enough to say "well, they defeated the god! and they needed the collective strength of society to do it! people did change because without that change of heart, the heroes wouldn't have the magical juice to fight the Kabbalah monster!" to toss Makoto's words back at the series: victory against a single god is meaningless if the true enemy is society.

If you can't show me what that grand spiritual change means for society, then I think you've kinda failed. you've certainly failed if the conclusion is that the world after that change is functionally the same and it doesn't really matter to me if "they talk about this in Strikers or whatever" because you can't offload your thematic snarls to side games. if the main stories you tell can't resolve this tension, that's a problem. these are often very beautiful games. they certainly have amazing structure and systems. but I don't think it's controversial to say they often hedge their bets at the end. and there's no impenetrable cultural wall surrounding the games that leaves the criticism off the table.

that's just What Happens. and it's fine for us to acknowledge flaws in even in things that contain beauty or meant something to us

Honestly, that little ramble on your 300 followers post kinda makes me wanna start posting my PT art on Tumblr now. I used to post FNF art over on DA, and did so for a few years. I poured my heart and soul into that AU, even if the art for it was usually pretty simple, and guess what I got in return?

... Someone posting my art to R/DeviantArtHell, calling a ship that I had between a canon character and an OC of mine sexual-related and incest (It was neither), and I ended up leaving the site out of fear people would try to accuse me of doing even worse stuff.

So yeah, that situation was really demotivating and made me seriously question if I was ever gonna want to share my art with anyone besides my friends ever again. But hearing that little ramble about how you’ve received so much love and support since moving to Tumblr makes me think that maybe I could have a better time posting my art here as well!

gosh, that's awful, i browse Reddit on occasion without an account just for cute/fandom posts, but an unfortunately-large portion of that site is bigoted and filled with hate. it's especially big in certain fandom circles like Undertale/Deltarune, but yeah, there's a good reason i deleted my old account from there.

and you know? i was honestly terrified about posting art on here originally. there's definitely still people here who will be rude and bullying for no reasons other than to be mean. but the Pizza Tower fanbase here is surprisingly supportive, and a lot of blogs i've met i've actually gotten fairly close with!

i'd say, if you want to post your art here, go for it! it might be slow to get attention at first, but the more you make, and the more people you talk too, eventually you'll get there!

One of the first people who was interested to deep dive into my creations and ask about my stories and worlds They're probably competing with Rabid with how much I have to say about her/silly. hi chat i shall offer advice because how many of you struggle with eds again

try something light. something that doesn’t sit in your stomach like a ground up corpse. don’t know if it’s just me but i find it easier to not feel awful about having food in my stomach when it doesn’t feel like there’s food in my stomach you get me

might sound weird but i think stress starving is okay. if you’re stressed and having an empty stomach helps you feel better that’s okay. just don’t starve yourself because you don’t want the calories. (i find i feel like this weird fuckin bloated feeling when I’m stressed and i have food in my stomach it feels awful and pushes me to starve even when i’m not stressed so like if you’re stressed you can go without food for a bit that’s fine)

if you can get some food down be proud of yourself. seriously. i know eating is stupidly simple and “everyone can do it” but it’s hard for you. you should be proud of yourself for doing it and don’t let anyone tell otherwise.

try something more on the bland side. something that doesn’t feel like fireworks of flavour exploding on your tongue. try soup. try rice. try something that doesn’t immediately trigger the “oh god I’m consuming too many calories right now and i need to stop”. less oily stuff also helps i think

fruit. fruit is good. mmmmmmm fruit. dump that stuff into yoghurt and mix it and eat that it’s really good (yoghurt is kinda heavy though.)

these aren’t actual tips it’s just little things i picked up that i think may help but everyone is different and some might not work for you and anxiety is making me ramble again aha have fun try it out get better ok and i’m talking to the antags, protags and anyone struggling here you go people stay alive

Okay, I'm just going to ramble today. I have a lot of things I want to draw, but as anyone who reads my chatter knows, I also have a lot to say (lol).

I've been thinking about... I keep thinking about Felix and Kitty from the past.... I'm referring to the character in IM, by the way, I keep thinking about Felix who was zany and a star in his hometown, and it feels really good. One of my favorite references to that time is that he can pull his tail off and use it as a cane(+10.27 edit : its not cane, it's flashlight!) which I think actually came up when he was referring to something he couldn't do anymore when he decided to stop being zany, and it's a classic cartoon gimmick! I love those witty gimmicks from the black-and-white era... But the zany people in the IM universe don't know that this actually happens in real life, and Felix used his tail as a cane when he was a star?

....

I'm definitely going to draw this... Personally, I think the star Felix would have worn a swallowtail tailcoat suit and top hat to show off his showmanship... This outfit!! I'm sure he would have worn it.

Oh, and while we're on the subject of pictures, I'll post this one too. I personally designed my own IM kitty, mixing the cartoon design with my own style, but there's a mention in the novel that she's wearing earrings. But if you look at the cartoon kitty, the earrings... They're not in the cat's ears, they're in the human's ears. It's so funny. So I just put the earrings in the cat's ears. Note that in her latest design, there are no earrings! It bothered me so much that I wanted to talk about it.

Now let's move on to Kitty and Felix.

Lately... it's just that the fact that they broke up in this universe is new and refreshing and it's something that keeps popping up in my head... It feels good. I feel a little bad for Felix, but I love it.

I think they would have been good partners for each other before that happened... I felt it in the scene where Felix mentions Kitty's habits... When Kitty would get nervous, Felix would put his hand over hers to calm her down. No, seriously, this is too good.

Okay, I'll be honest, I have a defense. I'm a multi-shipper, and I like backstories that weren't properly revealed in the original story, but existed, and I like to imagine them... If it's a character I'm interested in, I tend to use my imagination a lot, so I honestly feel a little guilty about it... It's not an official setting, but I just flesh it out with the bits and pieces that are revealed. Imagination is fine, but when I put it into pictures or small talk, it stings a little bit... So please accept all my small talk as my personal headcanon!

Then I'll start talking again. Anyway, I've been thinking a lot about characters from the past lately... Felix and Kitty, Oswald and Ortensia. How could the fates of these two pairs be so different? The more I think about it, the more my head cracks. It's so... I like it... I love how complicated and bittersweet and ironic the relationship is.... If these couples hadn't had to go through the hardships they did, they would have stayed with their partners, and it would have been happier for them, but I want to ask them, "If you could go back in time and prevent the events from happening, would you go back, but at the cost of losing all the relationships you've built in the present?" I wonder what their answer would be? It's really interesting to think about....

Oh. It's Oswald... I can't help but think of Fanny again. If you've all read the latest chapter... You know? Sooner or later, I'm going to find and read all the chapters where the two characters are together and the past is mentioned...

I kinda like the more mature characters in IM...lol.
