in the romcom genre, the pairing gets a happy ending. no exceptions. romances that don't end with happy endings for the main pairing aren't considered romances by genre conventions. so, given that tim and oliver have been calling bucktommy a romcom... what's all this then? this is normally the place in the story where the couple just emerges from their honeymoon period to hit rock bottom. (see: the black moment). the characters hit a hurdle that seems insurmountable and then are forced to work through the issues keeping them apart to find their way back to one another. the third act breakup before the eventually happy ending. so... what's all this then? if i hadn't read the interviews i would've pegged this as the black moment, the temporary hurdle placed in the couple's way before they eventually work past it.
so where do they go from here? if this is actually not meant to last, i do think the breakup is going to leave a sour taste in some people's mouths even if B/T get back together. and they expressed wanting to get buck off the "hamster wheel" so just putting him in another string of not-meant-to-last relationships seems regressive. (i think having buck sleeping around could actually be interesting if handled well, but right now i don't know if i trust this writing staff with that sort of arc.)
also i will be honest and say, to me, it doesn't sound like lou is 100% absolutely not coming back. it feels like the door's been left ajar (which, they'd be dumb to completely slam it shut and cut off a potential avenue of stories just like that but still). and we should keep in mind that most of these journalists are B/E shippers first so there might be a slant baked into their interviews.
i just don't know where this is going now after being told by tim "this is a romcom" (thanks tim, you've broken genre rules if this is a permanent breakup) and that he wanted to get buck off the hamster wheel. i suppose they can pivot to buck taking what he learned into a new relationship but he's already done that after abby, after ali, after taylor, after natalia... it's just boring. if they didn't want buck to settle into being with tommy because they weren't sure how to write SLs for him that's a skill issue. they've written bathena just fine without constant relationship issues. they're happy and settled together but still have conflict that doesn't necessarily have to be relationship-related. they could've easily done that for bucktommy too. (kind of an aside, but it also feels like they don't really know what sort of SLs to give henren and madney.)
after going through the trouble to bring tommy back, set him up to fit in with the 118, stating that tommy being a firefighter/pilot could lead to his inclusion on calls, introduce and hint at backstory that tommy longs for family/belonging, only to never actually deliver on it... why?

I know we've been manifesting S8 Air Ops since that photo of a hangar was posted by a member of the scouting team. And I know the other side has been mocking us for being delusional when other bts photos of an aircraft came out. So here I am, taking my shipper's goggles off, and diving into the aviation side of things. I have to admit, it left me with more questions than answers.
They already have a hangar for Air Ops in S7, they don't need another one
No. The 911!Air Ops we see in S7 is the Helinet hangar at Van Nuys Airport. Helinet is a company that rents and operates helicopters for news stations, film crews, medivac service or regular charter flights. You can compare images from 7x02 and 7x03 with Google Street Views of the Helinet Hangar.
You can also see N67TV and N29HD here.
Helinet is where ABC usually rents its news helicopters from, so it's cheaper and more convenient to film a couple scenes there when helicopters are needed. It can't be used for regular filming though, because Helinet has a business to run, and when a helicopter takes off, it's so noisy that you can't even hear each other talking, let alone shooting a scene. (I recommend watching the whole video, if you're interested in accuracy when it comes to writing fics.)
It's a plane related emergency so it must be related to Tommy
Also no. Again, I've written a piece about how Tommy was not the air tanker pilot in 2x14 before, and if he was not qualified for that, he's not qualified to fly an airliner either. It's not impossible that he flies a small turboprop aircraft like a Cessna 172, but he would never have the time to get certified as a commercial airliner pilot while working as an active firefighter since 2005.
And this is a prop for an Airbus airliner.
It's actually pretty easy to tell an Airbus aircraft from a Boeing one, as the shape of the rear cockpit windows is pretty different between the two. It's just a matter of which Airbus model it is. I believe it's a narrow body single aisle aircraft from the A320 family.
Wide body Airbus aircrafts, like this A300, have their side cockpit windows more tapered to the top. It also applies to other Airbus twin aisle aircrafts, like the A330 and the A340.
On the A320 though, the side windows are flat on the top.
So it's a pretty safe bet that the aircraft we see in that bts photo is one from the A320 family. I can't pinpoint which one it exactly is, because again, I can just see a tiny section of the cockpit, not the rest of the aircraft.
So the hangar must be for the airplane then?
The hangar itself is a former Air National Guard maintenance hangar at Ontario International Airport (ONT/KONT). It's especially used for filming. There are bigger hangars at the same airport for filming, but this one looks the best on camera.
They don't need a hangar for scenes inside of the plane, they have cockpit and cabin mock-ups at the studio for them.
You can clearly see the cabin door right here from recent bts footage. It looks just like a training facility for flight attendants.
They only film on location if they want shots of the entire aircraft from the outside. Like in 1x04, the scenes of Athena responding to an alleged unruly passenger were filmed in a set. The plane crash rescue parts of the episode though, were filmed in an actual retired 757 in a tub of water.
youtube
(Lone Star worked with this exact company for 3x08. Though, that plane was a 737 I believe.)
I can't think of any disastrous scenario happening in a maintenance hangar, where the aircraft is powered off with only maintenance staff present, no passengers or crew. Well, there have been cases of planes crashing into a hangar, but even then I don't see the need for the 118 to be there. Every major airport has at least one fire station on site with dedicated foam and crash units. In fact, there is a fire station right next to this hangar IRL.
Another problem, although I'm not sure because I don't have the actual measurements, is that the celling of the hangar looks quite low. (Refer to page 44 of this document) It was originally built in 1955 to house fighter jets. The F-102, the type of aircraft operated there in the 60s and 70s, has a total height of 6.5 meters. The tail of an A320 on the other hand can reach 11.76 m from the ground. (The shortest variant of the A320 family is actually even taller, 12.51 m.) So there could be some tail bumping action if you try to tow an A320 into this hangar.
So Air Ops is still a possibility?
Yes. This hangar is quite a bit larger than the Helinet hangar, but still not as big as the actual Air Ops facility. A helicopter is obviously much smaller than a passenger airliner that can seat over 180, you can easily fit multiple helicopters in there with plenty of space left for other set props. But the problem is, they don't have enough helicopters.
They have that one replica of N211FN that they used to film the search and rescue in 7x03, that's it. All the other helicopters you see on screen, including the real N211FN that actually flies, belong to Helinet. Sure, they can get some more fake helicopters that are empty inside just for looks, but I don't see the need to spend so much extra money just to show Tommy's place of work unless it's related to some major plot points. For now, I don't see how that would fit into the story.
There is also the possibility that the hangar has nothing to do with anything aviation related. I mean, they've filmed countless ads, music videos and movies, including Ford vs Ferrari there. Your guess is as good as mine. Maybe that's why that crew member eventually got the green light to confirm the hangar is indeed for 9-1-1, it tells us absolutely nothing.

Owen’s about two seconds away from calling Tommy over when TK’s face changes, his breathing suddenly becoming very carefully measured.“Son?” he asks, reaching across the table to lay a hand on TK’s arm. The second he makes contact, however, TK violently shoves away from the table, chair legs scraping noisily on the linoleum.“Bathroom,” is all the explanation he gives before rushing off, very obviously unsteady on his feet.

Most Anticipated LGBTQIA+ Historical Romance Novels for 2019
Any Old Diamonds by KJ Charles
- In which we stick it to a duke. Any Old Diamonds is set in the late Victorian era and inspired by a number of things: a real historical crime (not telling you which, that would be a giveaway), the popular theatre of the time (hence the music-hall title), and my urge to find out what happened to some characters in my Sins of the Cities series, set twenty years earlier. I loved writing this one; I hope you enjoy a more-sociopathic-than usual hero.

Ones to Watch (Up and coming authors I follow on Twitter that are winning awards in their own regions, some published, but I would like to see more of their work!)
Isabelle Adler - working on an arranged marriage, fantasy plot to be published by Nine Star Press - Frost?
Tamara Allen - has published some lovely works, and now that she has recently released something new, I’m hoping she has something else for us in 2019
Cristina Bruni - published the charming Hearts at Sea from JMS Books, and I like her work with the sweet plot line
Blake Ferre - working on a series based in Revolutionary France - The Scarlet Crest - The King’s Secret
Drew Marvin Frayne - his The Bibliophile novel was one that should have been on my Best of 2018 list, but I wasn’t able to read it in time - a sweet May/December with a western them, but it also tackled the subject of US government’s mistreatment of Native Americans and the consequences it caused
Jude Lucens - author of Behind These Doors, one of absolute favorite novels of 2018, and indeed many years before it - must see a second full novel in the series
Aleksandr Voinov - writes so many beautiful stories, but hoping for a new historical this year; his talent shines with the details
Lee Welch - received a lot of acclaim for Salt Magic, Skin Magic, and though I am not a rabid reader of fantasy, I want more…

Fall Fusion 2020 (CBS)
Normally during this time of year, ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, and The CW get ready to unveil their primetime rosters. However, this year will be much different, due to the uncertainty surrounding the Coronavirus pandemic. Virtually all Hollywood productions are currently shut down until it can be determined that they are safe to reopen. As a consequence, most of the fall pilots weren’t able to be completed in time for network executives to screen them ahead of constructing the 2020-21 network television season.
Although the networks will still be doing “upfronts” in May, they won’t be live...and, more pointedly, they will probably be more tentative when it comes to potential calendar dates. After all, we won’t know when series are ready to have their exact premiere dates green-lit until we have a more concrete timeline of when they can go back into production.
While many writing rooms have been able to operate and interact – in preparation for next season – remotely, the on-set production cannot resume until safety precautions are developed. Presumably, these protocols will involve: medical screening and constant testing for all cast and crew members; appropriate sanitization regimes to keep the sets clean; and creative ways to mitigate risk (such as more closed sets, “bottle episodes,” and tapings where studio audiences are absent).
The “bubble shows” for this season are probably more likely to return than they would have been in past traditional seasons, just because they are familiar commodities with infrastructure already in place...and there is obviously a lack of completed pilots for new series that could replace them. These could-go-either-way series include: Zoe’s Extraordinary Playlist, Good Girls, Council of Dads, Lincoln Rhyme, Indebted, and Perfect Harmony on NBC; For Life, American Housewife, Emergence, Single Parents, Bless This Mess, Schooled, blackish, mixedish, and The Baker & The Beauty on ABC; All Rise, Bob Hearts Abishola, The Unicorn, Man with a Plan, Broke, Carol’s Second Act, Tommy, MacGyver, Magnum P.I., SEAL Team, and S.W.A.T. on CBS; Katy Keene on The CW; and The Moodys and Outmatched on Fox.
Some new programs have already received a straight-to-series order, whereas others could receive a blind pickup commitment based on their written premises. In addition, I wouldn’t be surprised if some shows are held over until later in 2021, just so the networks have a way to hedge their bets if there was a “second wave” of studio shutdowns due to hypothetical re-infections in late-2020 or early-2021.
Based on this unprecedented state of limbo Hollywood finds itself in, I am constructing a tentative “blueprint” for each broadcast network from the limited information we have. I have constructed their respective schedules in three hypothetical programming “waves” – November/December/January, February/March/April, and May/June/July.
Obviously, any productions are subject to further delay based on extenuating circumstances. Likewise, a series that receives a more limited order of 13, 16, or 18 episodes could see its episode order expanded, if filming circumstances grow more favorable and the specific show performs well upon its return.
(All times are Eastern/Pacific; subtract one hour for the Central/Mountain time zones)
(New shows highlighted in bold)
Featured network for today’s column…
CBS
Sunday
7:00 – 60 Minutes
8:00 – Love Island (late-2020) / Ways & Means (early-2021) / Big Brother 23 (mid-2021)
9:00 – CBS Sunday Night Movie (late-2020) / NCIS: Los Angeles (early-2021 through mid-2021)
10:00 – CBS Sunday Night Movie (late-2020) / S.W.A.T. (early-2021 through mid-2021)
For fall “filler” programming, the newly-resurrected CBS Sunday Night Movie could fill two of the four hours on Sunday. 60 Minutes can continue to thrive in its traditional time slot, and Love Island would be easy and cost-effective enough to be placed in perhaps a modified format.
By January or February, political drama Ways & Means should be ready to fill the time slot previously occupied by God Friended Me. The middle time slot would retain NCIS: Los Angeles, with S.W.A.T. bringing up the rear. Even with scripted programs likely still finishing out their seasons well into June and July of next summer, the twenty-third edition of Big Brother (assuming that Season 22 is able to air sometime later this year) would be set to dislodge Ways & Means (even if the Patrick Dempsey-led newcomer gets a back-order of episodes commissioned).
Monday
8:00 – The Neighborhood (late-2020 through mid-2021)
8:30 – Bob Hearts Abishola (late-2020 through mid-2021)
9:00 – One Day At A Time encores (late-2020) / All Rise (early-2021 through late-2021)
10:00 – 48 Hours (late-2020) / Bull (early-2021 through late-2021)
For fall “filler” programming, Love Island or Big Brother 22 are programs that could fill space, as well as back-to-back episodes of the One Day at a Time remake (which is partially co-owned by TV Land, even though it airs on Pop TV). 48 Hours or any of its ancillary investigative editions would also be a reliable filler-in.
By January or February (or possibly sooner), The Neighborhood and Bob Hearts Abishola are two of the likeliest sitcoms to have stockpiled new episodes after being brought back into production. All Rise and Bull would retain their time slots from last season, even if they’re not ready to debut their newest seasons until sometime after the new year.
Tuesday
8:00 – NCIS (late-2020 through mid-2021)
9:00 – FBI (late-2020 through mid-2021)
10:00 – The Equalizer (late-2020) / FBI: Most Wanted (early-2021 through mid-2021)
Love Island and Big Brother 22 are also possibilities to fill Tuesday nights, in the event that NCIS and FBI aren’t ready to return until November or December. Meanwhile, the star power of Queen Latifah could make The Equalizer one of the first new dramas on CBS’s schedule to have original episodes ready, especially if the rapper’s lead character isn’t dependent on exterior location shoots for her scenes. FBI: Most Wanted would return by January or February, at which point The Equalizer would migrate to a different night if it receives a Back-Nine order.
Wednesday
8:00 – The Amazing Race 32 (late-2020) / Survivor 41 & 42 (early-2021 through mid-2021)
9:00 – Undercover Boss (late-2020) / SEAL Team (early-2021) / Big Brother 23 (mid-2021)
10:00 – Out The Door (late-2020) / NCIS: New Orleans (early-2021) / SEAL Team (mid-2021)
For fall “filler” programming, Season 32 of The Amazing Race (originally slated for next month, but held back due to the postponement of Survivor filming its next two seasons) would be a logical choice to sub into Survivor’s time slot while CBS awaits Season 41 of Survivor to complete its delayed schedule. Undercover Boss should be doable to adapt its format in light of Coronavirus mitigation, while the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced drama Out The Door could launch with lower-maintenance production needs.
If Out the Door receives a Back-Nine order, it would move to a new night (or possibly even be placed on hiatus until the summer). Survivor hopefully can air its forty-first and forty-second seasons almost back-to-back (with Survivor 41 premiering in January or February, and Survivor 42 debuting in the summer). January would see the returns of SEAL Team and NCIS: New Orleans at 9pm and 10pm, respectively. Once Big Brother returns in the Summer of 2021, SEAL Team would move over to 10pm to finish airing any of its remaining episodes, while NCIS: New Orleans could finish out its own season on Thursday nights.
Thursday
8:00 – Young Sheldon (late-2020 through mid-2021)
8:30 – The Unicorn (late-2020 through mid-2021)
9:00 – Mom (late-2020 through mid-2021) / Big Brother 23 (mid-2021)
9:30 – B-Positive (late-2020) / Please Hold For Frankie Wolfe (early-2021) / Big Brother 23 (mid-2021)
10:00 – Evil (late-2020) / Clarice (early-2021) / NCIS: New Orleans (mid-2021)
Following any episodes of Love Island or Big Brother 22 potentially airing in October and November, Young Sheldon, The Unicorn, and Mom would all return for the first 90 minutes of CBS’s Thursday comedy bloc. Relationship comedy B-Positive would get the initial tryout in the post-Mom time slot, with a Back-Nine order possible. Evil would return for its 13-episode second season.
Regardless of whether CBS orders more episodes of B-Positive, the new Julie Bowen sitcom Please Hold For Frankie Wolfe could be a post-Mom midseason replacement. Once Evil wraps up its sophomore season, Clarice (a sequel to Silence of the Lambs, starring Rebecca Breeds) would take over that time slot for 13 more episodes. NCIS: New Orleans would pick up the slack following Clarice’s season finale, shifting here from Wednesday night as Big Brother 23 returns in Summer 2021.
Friday
8:00 – Tough As Nails (late-2020) / MacGyver (early-2021 through mid-2021)
9:00 – The Good Fight (late-2020) / Magnum P.I. (early-2021 through mid-2021)
10:00 – Jordan Peele’s The Twilight Zone (late-2020) / Blue Bloods (early-2021 through mid-2021)
For fall “filler” programming, another edition of Phil Keoghan’s upcoming reality show Tough as Nails could be commissioned if its Summer 2020 run is successful. CBS could also dip into its “All Access” library, featuring episodes of The Good Fight and The Twilight Zone reboot.
By January or February, the MacGyver / Magnum P.I. / Blue Bloods lineup should be ready to return, although their full seasons may need to extend through June and July due to the overall production delays faced by most returning scripted series.
Of course, new original series (including scripted programming) could be developed throughout the year and added to the schedule in piecemeal fashion. It’s just going to depend on how quickly location shoots and live studio audiences can be reintegrated into productions as commonplace, once again.
Until then, TV shows will have to find creative ways around that...or develop alternative types of programming.

The Amazing wilderness survival stories
As detailed in The National, in January 2006 Megee was driving through Australia's Northern Territory. Three guys down him, claiming they had no petrol. In fact, they had no scruples, being robbers who slipped a drug into Megee's beverage, robbed him of virtually everything while he was passed out, and threw him in a shallow grave to die.
After Megee awoke, he was alone, had no working phone, no water, no food, no shoes, and no hope. After two weeks, he had been forced to start drinking his own urine, and did not eat anything before the fifth day. He eventually found a dam with water and such culinary delights as raw frogs, lizards, and leeches. Later, after several rounds of heat exhaustion and dehydration, he discovered a much better dam with more water. He remained there for nearly two weeks, but man cannot live on tiny insects alone, and Megee began to waste away. Everything from getting water to just waking up and walking around took massive effort.
Finally, after 71 days, Megee was rescued by nearby station-hands, who just happened to be surveying the area. By that time, he had dropped from 230 pounds to a skeletal 99 pounds, which makes his survival nothing short of a miracle.
, he was accidentally lowered over a super-deep crevasse. Gravity started pulling Yates toward the cliff, and he had to cut the rope to avoid careening to the ground below. This, however, sent Simpson careening to the ground below, and Yates finally returned to the campsite overcome with grief and guilt.
But Yates had saved his friend's life. Simpson crashed through soft snow, breaking his fall enough to keep him both alive and conscious. Then he crawled 6 miles back to camp (it took him about 60 hours to do so), relieving Yates of the feeling that he had just brutally murdered his friend.
Together with the broken leg, Simpson dropped about 42 pounds on the mountain. But he came outside living, plus he got to write a book and make a film about his ordeal, which are all superior alternatives to death.
, after killing a few Germans in a firefight, Baalsrud began running in the direction of Sweden, a neutral country where the Nazis couldn't get him.
He walked for nearly a week nonstop, and considering one of those Nazis shot him in the foot, that's pretty impressive. But then, an avalanche sent him plummeting 300 feet, catapulting his story from "impressive" to "legendary." He awakened concussed but kept stumbling in what he hoped was the direction of Sweden. He walked alone in the deep, blowing snow, for two months. Eventually, he stumbled upon the village of Furuflaten, where the neighborhood Nazi resistance group nursed him back to health. Then they brought him to some Lapps tribesmen in the Revdal mountain, who put him on a sled and whisked him into Sweden.
Baalsrud had survived, though he weighed about 80 pounds when he came in Furuflaten. Plus, he was so frostbitten he dropped nine toes, which he had to amputate himself. But he dwelt, and proceeded to be knighted by the Queen of England. Time took him away in 1988, at age 70, long after both Nazis and the components didn't do so.
, they were halfway up the 1,200-foot Cross Couloir when a snowstorm came a day earlier than anticipated. They would have loved to climb back down, but the deep snow, blinding storm, and incoming darkness made that impossible. They couldn't climb down once at the peak either, since it was pitch-black and they couldn't see any paths. With 50 mph winds and temperatures reaching -20 degrees Fahrenheit, the pair resorted to rubbing their bare feet in each others' armpits to keep frostbite at bay.
They lived the night, starting their descent the following morning. Problem is, they moved the wrong way, and had no cell reception to boot. They were also without food and were becoming increasingly soaked with cold water by the step. Their compasses did not work either, thanks to the iron in the nearby stones interfering with the compass magnets. When their waterlogged lighters failed to start a fire, that's when Matt uttered what nobody wants to say or hear: "Tommy, we could die out here."
They were succumbing to hypothermia when a chopper came ... and then flew away. The boys finally gave up and tearfully accepted departure. Luckily, the chopper returned an hour later and picked them up. Maybe the chopper pilot could have dropped them a note explaining the chopper needed to refuel.
, "I can do this. I'm not going to die out here. I'm not that kid. No one's going to write a book about me since I will make it."
Mazzaferri tried to follow his footprints back to a shelter (without glasses, that was all he could see), but darkness and the cold compelled him to hunker down for the night. Knowing hypothermia could kill him if he slept, Mazzaferri would rest for 20 minutes, get up and exercise to keep from going numb, then rest another 20 minutes. In the morning, he set off more hiking, but finally lost track of his own footprints. Seeing no additional options (or anything else, really), he began after deer tracks, which miraculously led him back to his own prints.
Eventually however, he ran out of tracks again and couldn't tell which direction to go. Luckily, he heard a plow crew across a freezing river. Despite being dangerously cold already, Mazzaferri followed the sound, swimming across the river to join his new best friends.
The Jewish Chronicle that for three weeks, he just did what he could to survive. He lit bug spray to make a makeshift flamethrower and ward off a jaguar. He swiped eggs from nests and ate them raw (based on the egg's progress, this was either breakfast or dinner). But overall, he ate very little, and has been regularly attacked by all sorts of nasty creatures. One day it had been fire ants, then a few days after he battled termites. After all, as he , "I'd have eaten human flesh. With desire at that level, it is just energy. It is beyond disgust."
Amazingly, his rescue happened almost completely by accident. Kevin, his rafting buddy, had survived and was searching for him but thought he had failed. So he landed his ship to turn around and just happened to land exactly where Ghinsberg had collapsed. That is the definition of fortune, although the grit and toughness needed to last that long is nothing short of Hollywood-worthy, so Daniel Radcliffe played in the film.
) so completely remarkable.
On August 13, 2011, Evans and his family took a Cessna plane to their new home in Anvik, Alaska. However, the skies turned cloudy, obscuring the pilot's view. They ended up crashing into a mountain, killing the pilot and another passenger instantly. When Evans came to, he found his spine, legs, jaw, and feet were broken, plus he had lost teeth. Worse, it initially seemed like his entire family was dead. They were not, but they were seriously injured. Bones were broken, his pregnant wife was coughing up blood, his son's skull had been crushed under the airplane's floorboards, and his daughter's intestines were "severed." Meanwhile, Donald could barely walk but was doing his best to crawl to each family member and help as best he could.
Night fell, the temperature dropped, and no rescuers came. Donald worked to keep everybody awake, as falling asleep in weather this cold might have killed them. But after 15 hours, he had given up hope. He fed his family some oranges as a previous meal, and then let them sleep. The National Guard had had other plans -- a helicopter came just a couple of minutes later to collect everybody. Amazingly, they all survived, including their unborn kid.
he told ABC News was his "survivor man routine." This involved drinking puddle water, no matter how dirty and disgusting it might've been. Regrettably, his difficulty with leaving the mountain proved harder to solve, as he kept going in circles and after rivers that led nowhere.
From the fourth day, he had reached his limit. He was cold, weak, tired, starving, and was running out of ideas. He found his way into a stream and began carving out a goodbye to his wife on a piece of wood. He also spelled out HELP using tree needles, one final stab at making certain his goodbye wouldn't be necessary.
The following morning, he ate a dandelion for his first food since becoming lost, and shortly after that a search team finally found him. They'd been searching for him all weekend, in possibly the largest search-and-rescue mission of the year. The moral of the story: Get your bait before you go fishing.
, was hunting moose in Western Ontario with only a bow and arrow for business. On the morning of September 26, 2011, he readied his bow and began some moose calls. Unfortunately for his search, no moose showed up. Unfortunately for his health, a black bear did. When the bear saw him, Prokulevich shouted for him to leave. The bear did not listen and ran to attack him.
Prokulevich tried to shoot an arrow at the bear, who chomped down on his arm and stopped that fantasy. The two began to wrestle, and the bear bit down on his neck. Prokulevich, spurred by thoughts of leaving his son behind, got some energy. He stabbed the bear's head with an arrow before it gave up, and then the would-be moosehunter hightailed it out of there, instantly boating back to camp, where he had been taken to an emergency room.
As it happens, Prokulevich had gotten super lucky. The bear's bites were inches away from puncturing his lung and damaging his spinal cord, so while he was certainly injured, he wasn't as mortally wounded as he could have been. Plus, now he has a story his son will never tire of hearing.
, lightning struck out of nowhere shortly after the storm began. While it knocked his friends back and slightly injured them, it struck Austin directly, shredding his clothes and leaving his muscles, as he put it, "taut as bowstrings." The strike had also left a long scar from his head to his feet, such as Harry Potter's mark taken to the extreme.
Had Austin been lonely, the lightning likely would have murdered him. His heart stopped for 30 seconds, he lost control of his breathing, and his blood-deprived legs were soon turned into a deep shade of purple. Luckily, his friends were there and could perform CPR to get his heart started again, and rescue breathing to get oxygen flowing regularly. They also massaged blood back into his thighs. They still were not working properly when a rescue squad came roughly 90 minutes later, so they needed to carry Austin down the mountain.
After about 90 more minutes of descent, Austin began to regain use of his legs. After 18 hours in the hospital, he was nearly good as gold. Within a month all his muscles were back to normal, and the only evidence he had of his experience was a comprehensive, harrowing story.
