Everyone is stunned and silent, then there’s Lewis laughing in the background

Nobody can predict how the season will play out yet; there simply hasn’t been enough time to see how comfortable all the drivers are in their cars and how they interact with each other.

user455: interact with each other? their jobs are to win. it’s given that everyone will be competitive, so i think it literally just comes down their car and the risks they take. the reason lewis, max, and even schumi were so dominant is that they happened to drive for the team with the most powerful car, and they were willing to go as close to the corners as possible/be super aggressive with other drivers.

but, in the end, i agree with you. i don’t think we can see what’s going to happen in the end yet. personally, though, i think y/n can place higher than she did last year if she keeps doing what she’s doing.

Do you think that there is a chance that Max would go to Mercedes ?

I think there is always a chance that anything could happen in F1. I remember seeing the Lewis to Ferrari social media reporting and laughing thinking it was just gossip and that turned out to be true.

I have added thoughts after the cut but they are a little incoherent.

First and foremost Mercedes would have to show that they are more competitive than Red Bull. They have had some good races this year but it seems dependent on the track and temperature and there have also been some mistakes strategically etc. At the moment it is still looking like Red Bull will be more competitive in 2025 but there is a long way to go this season and I don't think Red Bull fully understand the RB20 or know which direction to go in development-wise which is a huge concern. These cars are going to follow through to next year so if they are struggling to get to grips with it then next year could be very tricky. I can't quite work out how quick the RB20 is because I do genuinely believe that Max is an exceptional talent and is getting more out of the car than it deserves. So for now I don't think Mercedes have shown anything to suggest they will outperform Red Bull in 2025. 2026 is a complete unknown though and could be more weighted to who can produce a good engine.

I think Max would prefer to stay at Red Bull. He has been there since he was pretty much a child and they do seem to adore him. I do think it would be rather sad if Max had to leave that team, especially when I think back to his radio after winning the title and how he asked if they could do this for another ten years 😭 I also can't imagine Max without GP so I think it would depend on if GP would be willing to move 😬

I just don't think Mercedes is any more attractive than Red Bull right now unless Max has concerns about the 2026 regs.

If Red Bull don't get their shit together and fall behind and Mercedes still aren't an attractive option then maybe he will decide to go and race in another series as I doubt he wants to be driving a car if it's not even capable of winning. He has so much talent. Ultimately I don't think he needs to win 7/8 championships, he will still be considered one of the greatest of all time if he retired today. Going and competing in a different series would cement his racing legacy further if he was at all bothered about that.

I think for now Red Bull are just about on the pace (although I think Max is making them seem better than they are) so no need to panic but they do need to show that they have a clear direction for the car going forward. I refuse to live in a world where Max goes back to the number 33 and Lando is driving around in car number 1 (sorry Lando fans absolutely no offence meant but I am a Max girl.)

Honestly I trust him to do whatever is right for him with the information he has and even if that means he ends up sim racing full time and having the absolute time of his life then so be it. He's worked hard since he was a child, achieved his ultimate goal of a championship and deserves to enjoy himself. I will still cry like a baby when he eventually retires from F1.

In short, there is a chance that anything could happen but I think for now Red Bull is still the best option for him, they just need to keep pushing with the development and stop relying on Max (and the strategy team) to cover up for the lack of pace.

I also can't believe Max to Mercedes is an option after the way they talked about him in 2021 but things change and in F1 being in the right team at the right time is paramount.

I wish Ferrari could get their shit together because I would quite like to see him in red for a season (but Ferrari are still out there doing Ferrari like things)

well it's a long way away, but it will probably be almost the first one I write after wygig. but it's so sweet that you've been thinking about it 😭 that makes me ridiculously happy.

anyway, here is a little piece from it. I honestly don't really remember what I've shared, but I feel fairly positive that this is very different to everything else I've shared from that piece.

also, I wrote all of this before Lewis' move to Ferrari, so I have yet to decide whether I'm going to rework that detail. just as fyi, bc Lewis at Mercedes is mentioned in here haha.

Max Verstappen Announces Memoir, “What I Was Made For.”

Max Verstappen shocked the world this morning by breaking his two year social media silence to announce his memoir. 

Verstappen started his Instagram post by firstly addressing his long hiatus from social media. 

“What started as a small break quickly turned into a complete life overhaul,” he wrote. 

“I started to reflect on my life and my childhood after my dad died in 2029, but it took me a few years to realise I needed to go deeper. When I decided to take that dive, I started to journal. Eventually, I realised I was writing a book.” 

Verstappen continued on by announcing that his memoir would be called What I Was Made For. 

“My memoir deals almost exclusively with my relationship with my father. It’s painful at points, and more honest than I’ve ever been in my life. I think that you’ll learn things about me that you might have already guessed, and probably some things that you wish you’d never found out. Either way, getting this out was the most cathartic thing I’ve ever done in my life. My memoir is called What I Was Made For, and it’s out October first.” 

Verstappen’s relationship with his father was highly debated during his time in Formula One. While both father and son were quite open about the relationship they had during the younger’s childhood, there were different opinions on whether it was a positive or a negative. 

Jos Verstappen drove in Formula One himself, though he never won a race or a Championship. Max entered Formula One at just sixteen years old, and subsequently became the youngest person to ever win an F1 race. 

Verstappen is now a seven-time Formula One World Champion, tied with Michael Schumacher for the second most Championships of all time. Lewis Hamilton holds the record of eight Championships, a record he broke in 2027, after which he retired. 

Verstappen won his seventh Championship the following year, in 2028, in very controversial fashion after he collided with his main rival Charles Leclerc. Leclerc had joined Mercedes that year, taking Hamilton’s seat, and was on track to win his first Championship. Verstappen was only four points ahead of Leclerc going into the final race, but after their collision neither scored points, leaving the Championship to Verstappen. 

While we don’t exactly know the contents of Verstappen’s memoir, it’s assumed from his post that it will detail his time before entering Formula One, perhaps even during it. Verstappen never made an announcement around his reason for retiring from the sport, so likely the book will explain this as well. 

With the memoir being released in only six weeks, it’s likely there will be more details to come.

Ahhhhh anon... I'm tempted to tell you to just eat pasta like the others but you know what I've actually been talking about this for the past hour with my dear friend Akira and here's the thing.

I stand by the fact that his first two seasons (due to reg change) in Ferrari will be the litmus test. Here's what I think can happen.

He gets to Ferrari, he does not feel better there and/or the car is not as competitive as he wants it to be and/or things don't get better, and that's that. Shit happens. Many such cases.

He gets to Ferrari, he feels good there, he gets his mojo back. If he can he'll fight for wins. If the car is really really competitive the question will realistically be can he still hold that rhythm through a year long title fight being older (because yes, he is getting older, it does seem to be taking a toll on him maybe not on track yet but as far as recuperating goes) and the seasons being longer and longer with sprint races on top of it? We can't possibly know at this point.

My question is either way, can he leave on a good note. Can he leave without another bitter rivalry (because whatever happens Ferrari will NOT make Charles a 2nd driver to him). Can he leave his head held high even if he doesn't win his 8th title which is a very real actually not implausible at all possibility. Is he ready to let it go and enjoy himself and focus on the bigger picture of how does he want to leave things not just on track but off track.

I want the end of his career to be beautiful. Like Seb's. I want it to be bittersweet and not just bitter. I want him to be happy with the way he left things rather than unsatisfied even if he never gets that fucking title.

And I think maybe that takes him AND US not seeing his 8th or his performance in general as the be all and end all goal rather than you know for example making sure the young ones have it better than he did, leaving in good terms with the people he likes, and with a good opinion of himself as a Person rather than as a Driver.

Okay I come in secrecy to ask if I’m crazy or if you see it too and just based off of your challengers brocedes stuff I feel like you would get this

Hear me out there’s this song called gates by the Menzingers and in my brain it is so so very brocedes coded

So the first two versus are early day brocedes them growing up together getting into f1 young and stupid and loving every second of it and then the second verse is Nico falling (and realizing it) for Lewis and becoming bitter about how he can’t have Lewis the way he wants and so he clings to this friendship

THEN the chorus is Nico handing in his resignation from f1 cut back to the third verse which is another flashback and all about the huge famous crash the “and they will make examples of us” and the “but I fed the liars” really cementing all the damage that Lewis has done to him throughout the middle and ending of the brocedes arc

The final chorus is Nico fully resigning from f1 after the championship win and all of the reporting he’s done now all of the confidence in Lewis still wrapping up the narrative of how brocedes broke them but Nico is trying to put it back together far far too late

Anyways I’m 99.9% sure I’m crazy but I can’t be the only one who sees it right??

It is really an unexpected season for me.

From the perspective of the race.🤲

I started watching it from Baku! And I fell in love with Charles' incredible performance on that pole lap. I have the fantasy that it would be normal to see Lestappen podiums this year.Then I got struck by the poor stability of SF-23😭 (Meanwhile I was surprised by Max's consistency in competing for championship and the outstanding performance of RB19). The dominance of RBR in the first half of the season is unbelievably strong.

Then came the second half of the season.Though my baby Charles still got through some unfortunate incidents, Ferrari had obviously improved their competativeness since Suzuka. And there are also some Lestappen fights I could enjoy.😌(Most importantly, I have finally seen some positive changes of attitudes towards Charles that Scuderia Ferrari is going to build a car that will be more suitable for Charles to drive)

From the perspective of the ship😘

The Little Talk: I always know that or assume that these two drivers are not so familiar with each other outside the paddock. So I really cherish the little touch and talk they share inside the paddock in racing week. My most impressed two moments are as followed: 1.Max chased after Charles just to praise Charles' special suit in Monaco 2.Charles asked Max about the time after! he had checked his own watch. Look at these two childish guy HOW can they bring about the worst topic just to talk more with each other! Let alone the amounts of Maxplaining and Leclerifying. And one thing I want to add is Max's apologies. If a writer creates such kind of plots, I would definitely think that is a little bit exaggeration and distortation. Let's just leave this out of character plot in the fiction. Oh then Max Verstappen denied the whole thing with his genuine and hurried apology to Charles. It also reminds me that they(at least Max) separate clearly on and off the track.

The special care for each other. What is note worthy is that I found that these two cares a little too much about each other as colleagues. The "Chuck Leclerc" and lots of "inchident" Max has mentioned. The "I enjoy racing with Max" Charles has mentioned(It may not be correct but I remembered that Charles has mentioned a lot of about fighting against Max in the second half of the season). I mean, considering that they didn't share much time in private, the frequency about mentioning each other is incredible...

The Touch: My fav part about Lestappen. The chemistry between these two F1 drivers is amazing. They are always so comfortably holding each others' waist and completely make every driver near them become a third wheel😅. In Austin Max even switched the medal to another hand and held Charles before Lewis arrived to take photos. In Brazil this scene just happened again and Lance was the victim this time. In Las Vegas，Max forgot to change to the middle position and quickly grabbed Charles until Charles reminded him→_→. The footsie thing also deserves some attention. It almost becomes a kind of tradition for Lestappen Press Conference. It is usually like that: Max took the intiative, Charles just obediently let him🤤🤤🤤.

There are so many things I want to mention but I think it is time to stop.(Thanks to these two people, my babies😘)

Looking forward to see more wheel-to-wheel fights between Lestappen in 2024

Well tbh people calling it a Drivers Championship battle is a stretch. Constructors Championship battle? For sure, but Lando is nowhere near to be fighting for a Championship with Max, at least not right now. Too far behind, only won once under a safety car and doesn’t seem to know what he is doing with the fastest car on the grid

I like Lando, but I think people only overhype him because they want him to win over Max, but imo Lando is not a threat in general and I don’t think Max sees him as that either.

Lando expecting Max to feel sympathy for him because of his championship points is just strange and childish, specially when I know for sure that he wouldn’t let anyone win over him if he was in Max’ position. The only thing I take away from all of this is that Lando is not on Max level (wbk) not even his 5 years of experience in F1 have helped and therefore he is not ready to fight for a championship.

Give that McLaren to Charles (with a good pit crew), Lewis, Alonso?, and you will see a real battle for a championship. Lando imo is not delivering, P2 must be nice for people who don’t have the fastest car on the grid but he does have it so 😭

Constructors is on for sure.

I don’t think the Driver’s is. For Lando to make up a 70 point deficit he would need to be out scoring Max by a win to second margin at every race. That is very unlikely to happen.

Lando is a good driver but Max has been fighting more or less at the front for 9 years (with a seasoned Hamilton, Vettel, and Raikonen, mind you). Lando has been in the midfield until last year. He doesn’t have a lot of experience with the pressure, or with the old school wheel to wheel racing that Max is used to. He is at a disadvantage. Part of that disadvantage is talent and race IQ that can’t be taught, but some of it is experience that Lando will get and he will improve. Sure Lewis could challenge for the title in that car but Lewis knows how to do that. Lando quite clearly is out of his depth. Imo he’s not ready for this now, the car has developed faster than Lando’s driving.

What people also have to remember is that Max doesn’t have a lot of experience racing Lando either. Max will learn how Lando approaches wheel to wheel and he will get better at racing Lando if he needs to.

But I don’t think Max sees anyone as competition per se. I think he truly believes that on his best day, no one can beat him, so all he focuses on is making sure every day is his best day. I think what Lando or any other driver does is largely irrelevant to him. I don’t think Max is sitting at home thinking “I need to make sure I’m ahead of Lando”. Whereas I think Lando thinks about Max’s race as much as his own.

I think I said this before that from where I’m sitting with very limited information, Lando comes across like he feels that Max has so much of everything Lando wants that he almost feels like Max is hoarding. Lando saying “he’s 70 points ahead, it doesn’t matter to him” just sounded like Lando just wanted another win. It sounded like “Max has 3 championships, 60 wins, and probably this year done as well…why can’t he just let me have this one”. And you know, I’m not sure if Lando was in the same position that he wouldn’t just let the other person pass. But I think the fact that he might is the reason he’ll never be in that position.

And for all Lando’s bitching that Max could have let him through, Lando could have backed off. Lando saying Max got desperate when Lando was SO desperate for the win that he threw away good points is just hypocritical. You’re right, Lando, Max didn’t need the points, he had nothing to lose…you were the one with something to lose and you lost. Lando wanted the win more than he wants to fight for the championship and that right there will be what makes the difference if he doesn’t change his mindset.

Hungarian GP 24 Part 4: Hungary-ing for a fight

When we last left off in lap 53, Oscar was slowly gaining ground on Lando after pitting second. We skip a few laps because nothing relevant happened and pick back up in lap 56, where the atomic bomb that McLaren have been building at their pit wall finally explodes.

Laps 1-32 | Laps 33-41 | Laps 42-55 | Laps 56-70

Lap 56 aka shit hits the fan: WJ: “We need to save more tyres please, and we do want to let Oscar through.” LN: “Well you should have boxed him first then, surely no?” WJ: “Doesn’t matter.” LN: “I mean, it does. To me maybe.” Again I don’t have full radio so I don’t know what might have been said that I’m missing, but as far as I can tell, this is the first reminder that Lando has gotten about swapping since lap 48 “at your convenience.” At some points between 53-56 the broadcast wasn’t showing timing gaps, but it looks like from lap 54 on Oscar was pretty consistently around 3.4 to 3.8 secs behind Lando. He’s stuck behind lapped p17 and Lando behind p16, so they’re both in traffic. Lando hasn’t set a fastest lap since 48. Honestly what part of these last 8 laps would have been “at Lando’s convenience” for him to swap? Given the circumstances, I definitely understand his point that a McLaren 1-2 with Lando in p1 might actually be more of a benefit for the team in terms of championship points since Lando is closer to catching Max. Even if you cut it to lap 51 when Oscar got told to play catch up, he hasn’t been anywhere near close enough to Lando to make a swap without Lando slowing A LOT which Oscar specifically was told the team didn’t want to do. At this point the team should have changed strategy somehow because it’s pretty clear Oscar was not going to catch Lando unless Lando got enough tire degradation by the very end of the race. Assuming that everything has been unchanged up to this hypothetical, I think I’d argue for forcing the swap immediately since Oscar has an 8+ second lead over Lewis in p3, and Lewis is caught up in a 3 way battle with Max and Charles.

Lap 57 Lando’s radio: “And Lando, we still think you’re using the tyres too much at Turns 4 and 11 and the rears at exit Turn 6 and Turn 9. Oscar is 3.5 [behind] – I know you’ll do the right thing.” There is a very strong emotional message here—do the right thing for the team by letting Oscar past. Again I can understand why Lando disagrees since all of the above ^^ remains true afaik. Oscar has been hovering between 3.1 and 3.5 since the last radio to Lando. The gap from Oscar to Lewis is ~9.5. What IS the right thing for the team in this moment, teamwork or championship points? They come at the expense of the other. In my view, this is not a decision that the driver should have to make during the race—the team should be making that and just bringing the hammer down. In this case what we see is the team repeatedly signaling for teamwork, so they should just make it an order.

Lap 58, I had to look up Multi 21 to understand the reference the commentators made, but it sounds like Oscar’s mentor was famously overtaken by a teammate who disobeyed team orders to stay behind. Is the bad luck contagious or what. Lando is just ahead lapped 14 and Oscar just behind 14 so they’re slowly making their way through traffic. Lando gets another tire warning over the radio. Oscar is… running between 3.8 and 4.3 my dude you’re making it so hard to root for you 😭 commentators say Oscar needs the position or there will be a “breach of trust” in the team. Both have been willing to swap positions in the past

Lap 59 Lando radio: “Turn 4, Turn 11 – it’s going to get boring.” McLarens on either side of lapped p13 now. Commentators pretty firmly on Oscar’s side now. Oscar is losing ground to Lando pretty steadily across laps 59 and 60 but with hindsight I think this is pretty clearly Lando speeding up rather than Oscar slowing down. Based on the time gaps, I think Lando went 🖕 to the strategy and decided to make his point about being faster after the radio in lap 57. He did NOT like being told to “do the right thing”. The gap to Lewis is still ~9.4 so at least the dick measuring contest isn’t getting in the way of the race

Lap 60 commentators say McLaren team principal is cracking jokes apparently. His leadership philosophy is to monitor and observe rather than give orders. Through to lap 61 Oscar is continuously losing ground to Lando, ending up in the 4.7 range by Lando’s lap 61 radio: WJ: “OK Lando, 10 laps to go – we think both cars are using their tyres too much. Just remember every single Sunday morning meeting we’ve had.” At first I would have thought the Sunday morning comment was about future Sundays—as in, we all have to work together in the future and it’s going to suck if we hate each other. But actually based on one of those Lando interview clips you sent, I think this is a reference to PAST Sundays. Lando in interview said something about how every team meeting they reaffirm their trust in each other and in the team, so I think THAT is the reminder he’s getting here, that they have all repeatedly committed themselves to each other. McLaren team polygamy wedding vows every Sunday morning 💍 Not to say that it isn’t also a warning about future Sundays being awful, just that it is equally an appeal to Lando’s prior knowledge of and commitment to team loyalty, both carrot and stick. Of course Lando says fuck off anyways: LN: “Yeah, well tell him to catch up please.” This again in the context of both his prior radios and his later interviews makes sort of sense as “Isn’t Oscar supposed to catch me rather than me let him go?” but also as I said previously he clearly decided around lap 57 to make a show out of the whole situation. Both cars are blowing out their tires which does, unfortunately, make the message more effective: Oscar IS racing Lando AND losing to Lando. 1st confirmation since lap 56 that Oscar is in fact Driving but is still not Surviving. I fucking hate the title of that show it’s so stupid if they wanted to survive they would have a better chance if they didn’t drive

Lap 61 cis male commentators finally picked up on the fact that there are emotions involved in this discussion… ffs. Debate is whether or not this is a moment for Lando to be a team player vs Be A Man by refusing orders. All the comparisons are to previous world champs, tho, not regular teammates, so I don’t know how effective it really was as a comparison. Lando’s 1 win doesn’t really put him that far ahead of Oscar in terms of successful teammate superiority. By lap 62 Lewis is more than 11 seconds behind Oscar; Oscar more than 5 behind Lando and 5.2 by the end of the lap

Lap 63 what we've all been waiting for, Max Crashstappen does it again 😂 Anyways at the end of this Oscar is still 5.2 behind Lando and we get another Lando radio: WJ: “Lando, he can’t catch you up. You’ve proved your point and it really doesn’t matter.” LN: “He’s on much quicker tires. I mean, I would have tried to undercut anyway. If I did, I would have got more.” WJ: “Mate, we did the stop sequence in this order for the good of the team.” LN: “And I am fighting for a world championship, am I not?” WJ: “I’m trying to protect you mate, I promise, I’m trying to protect you.” Here we see what I discussed back in laps 56/57 come full circle. What IS the right thing for the team? Radio clearly thinks it’s teamwork; Lando clearly thinks it’s the championship points. They both have a fair point. What is the WRONG thing for the team is leaving Lando to make that decision by himself at 200 mph. Not making it explicit earlier that swapping is an order not a choice is biting them in the butt here. By framing it as a “lando you choose” he’s been put in an artificially bad place because from his perspective he’s being forced to choose something that’s not in his own best interest on incomplete and constantly shifting information in some kind of fucked up trust fall exercise.

Lap 64 of course the iconic “It’s childish on the radio Max”. Commentators referring to Max and Lando as pot and kettle for their attitudes. By lap 65 Oscar is down 5.7… Lando really said “I’m NOT done making my point actually” Commentators make the 1st mention of Lando possibly making a point out of turning over p1 very late in the race. By lap 66 Oscar is down 6 seconds. Genuinely a miracle that Lando’s tires survived to the end of the race given the way he’s been driving on them.

Lap 66 Lando radio: “And Lando, there are five laps to go. The way to win a championship is not by yourself, it’s with the team. You’re going to need Oscar, and you’re going to need the team.” For the first time Lando gets an explicit call from the team on WHY they’re prioritizing teamwork over the championship, because the team sees teamwork as a foundation for a championship. Of course in interviews he makes it clear that he already knew that but this I think is the first moment that he begins to recontextualize the prior instructions he’s been given during the race. Oscar radio: OP: “The longer we leave this, the riskier it gets.” TS: “Understood, Oscar, we’re managing it.” Managing it 👀 The gap to Lewis is now 14+ seconds so I’m not sure what Oscar thinks is risky about this. Risky because they’re both killing their tires? Crash potential? Lol the shot of mechanics laughing in Oscar’s garage like calm down boy your go carts are not that serious. This is the first lap in a while that we’ve gotten race shots of them; it looks like they’re back to back with not a lot of other cars around so this would be Oscar’s best chance to make up some time now that he has escaped traffic.

If I’m right about Lando starting to speed around lap 57, then based on the times there’s very much no way Oscar can pass him at this point nor in fact has there been for a while now. Lando has added about 2.5-3 seconds to his lead over Oscar since lap 57 and even before that Oscar never got closer than about 3 seconds. Yes he had a good race at the start, yes if they had pit him first he would have Lando’s original 3 second lead and could just coast on that to the finish. Yes he is allegedly killing his tires. On the other hand, both of them have been navigating through the same traffic throughout these laps but Lando has managed to double his lead. Lando you made your point 😭 the horse is already dead you can stop beating it 😭

Lap 67 track shots Lando is behind p11 and Oscar is (far) behind him. Lando radio: "A potential Safety Car now would make this very awkward. Please do it. Now.” To Oscar’s credit he has shaved off a full second of Lando’s lead in this lap alone. His tires might be in slightly better condition at this point but I don’t think it would have been enough to catch Lando if he hadn’t conceded the position. I wish they showed the lap pace of p1, that would make it easier to tell if Oscar is catching up or if Lando is just already slowing down before he reaches the straight

Lap 68 dramatic slow down in front of the grandstands 😭 making Oscar swerve out of the racing line and onto the dirty part of the track 😭 “Yeah, you don’t need to say anything.” 😭 stop stop he’s already dead 😭

In all seriousness it’s pretty clear on a that Lando obeyed the team order when it came AS AN ORDER. “at your convenience” and “we still want him to pass you” are not even close to “please do it now.” From the outside looking in it seems very much like Lando thought he was being given the leeway to make a choice, which he backs up in his interview comments. Once it was clearly Not A Choice he did follow instructions. All of the drama for both drivers could have been avoided if the team had just been clear at the pit stop that the undercut was temporary.

Lap 68 the mechanics literally biting their nails 😂 Commentators note prior team orders to race the papayas but are not sure if they still stand; understandable given that we have just had 20 laps of racing papayas. Lando between .5 and 1 sec behind through 68 and 69

Last lap Oscar finally decided to show up and got up to 2 seconds ahead of Lando. Commentators note that Lando was now in the bad air off the back of Oscar’s car. Lewis 12 seconds behind 😂 I don’t think cars have to stay in order after they pass the finish line but I definitely didn’t miss Lando moving to get RIGHT in front of Oscar as he passed after the flag

“Sorry I made the swap a little bit more painful than it needed to be.” Do you think this reflects his actual thoughts or is this just a line to try to ease tensions? He does have a lot of reasons to feel like his win was threatened by team miscommunication and then cheapened by Lando’s antics. At the same time, he was basically 3-4 seconds away from Lando from leaving the pit in lap 48 to lap 57 where Lando really hit the accelerator. In those laps he didn’t show significantly better driving than Lando and between laps 57-67 he didn’t even keep up with Lando. This is despite both of them being in similarly bad track conditions (slower traffic, bad air streams). I don’t really think I have an answer to this other than he’s undercooked, put him back in the oven and let him finish baking or something and then he’ll be better next year

I'm going to dump the most delulu thought that had, maybe, ever crossed your blog, but before you judge me, heart me out.

The AT seat negotiation is not for Daniel but for Sergio, and this is why I think it makes more sense.

1. The only reason why Sergio is still driving for RedBull now is because of Daniel. RB and Christian don't want to repeat the Alex and Pierre PR disasters and if they switch Daniel and Sergio mid season then people will say that RB gave Sergio a broken car to have Daniel back, etc.. etc.. etc... So going him a seat at the brand new team as 1st driver might placate some of that heart.

2. Sergio is a good driver with a lot of experience and he's still useful to the team, but the pressure and the weight of being Max's teammate isn't something that he can handle as it has been proven on multiple occasions, now imagine if at some point Mercedes or Aston Martin or even Ferrari add some upgrades that could compromise the second place in the driver's championship. Do you think that Sergio is going to be able to deal with Fernando? Lewis? George? Carlos? or Charles? As well as trying to keep up with Max? I personally think he won't. But him driving in the midfields with Alpine, McLaren might be more adequate to his style rather than dealing with Max and all the expectations that comes with being RB's second driver.

3. Some people say that RB only need a driver to keep the rest of the grid off Max, I think that that is no longer the case because you have Max saying that although he likes the sport he isn't that much interested in winning another championship that easily so if you want a driver to challenge and provide good and entertaining fights then Daniel is the right choice. No offense to Sergio but he "doesn't have that dig in him" and besides defending he isn't very skilled in overtaking, he just have a fast car.

In conclusion if Helmut wants to rebrand AT with a more experienced driver then Sergio is the right choice, he can be a the first driver with Yuki, almost as an experimental launch if you want.

you know what, it suits my agenda so i'm down for it. checo's midfield performances pre-red bull WERE good—that's what got him the red bull seat in the first place—so if you want someone who's a solid driver but maybe not a top tier, best of the best talent to lead your team back up to the midfield, it makes sense!! the only con against him and this whole plan is that he's not a red bull driver™. he's not someone that was brought up through the system and i think for that reason, he doesn't really garner the same amount of loyalty as someone like pierre or alex. i guess maybe if they need to ride out the rest of his contract that could be an option regardless, but at that point it's like....would he even WANT to do that or would he rather just go be at home with his family 😭 hopefully get a nice severance package instead 😭

Same anon here who wrote about the "friend" quote. Toto is not Lewis' friend...at all. There are no friends in business and Toto is a businessman. He's also part owner of Merc. He cares about re-building and securing Merc's legacy after Lewis leaves. Once Merc started calling George Mr. Saturday, that's when Lewis stopped being a priority for the team- and yes, Toto is part of that.

We have to stop taking everything that is said at face value. Everything Toto says is PR. Of course he wants to give everyone the impression that they're on good terms.

We may have the 2024 season, but Lewis is no longer on that team as far as they're concerned. As a matter of fact, he is a liability. The driver's give feedback to help develop the car, not just for the season, but for the future. However, Lewis will be on another team. That's a conflict of interest. So why would they EVER prioritise him?

If they have a championship-winning car in 2024, Lewis is going to have to pull a Nico Rosberg, because if there's any indication from the last couple of seasons, the team will NOT help him over George. 8th WDC be damned.

I agree on some parts. Of course Toto is a business man and his loyalty therefore is with Mercedes.

Only time will tell if their friendship - as they have called it themselves over the years - will survive a move like this. The pro is they will see each other at races, but they’re both at different teams. And tbh we’ve seen with Angela and Lewis how fast an extremely close relationship can (seemingly) crash down. So I doubt it would still be there tbh.

I don’t think everything he says is PR. Since he’s very clear after 2025 he wants to win. Also he’s very clear about the fact they didn’t want to commit for longer to Lewis. Which we can make our own conclusions about.

In all honesty I think there closeness has and will be less. I thought it was already less last year - with indeed like you said - Merc prioritizing George too much. Or more babying him. He should have been told to shut up and stop the team order moaning quite a few times tbh. But Toto refrained. Now it’s clear why. He couldn’t even give Lewis the contract years he wanted and he sees George as the future and Lewis as a man on his way to retiring at the end of 2024. (His mind).

Maybe because - like Toto said yesterday - he has the idea that George is a good leader for them after 2024 😭😭💀

and people love to shit on him just because they know he can take it, that it means 'nothing' to him, that he will use it as fuel. be it his own team, his coworkers, the media, the 'fans'. it's enough. he's been doing this for far too long to not know what he's talking about in terms of extracting performance, tyre management, overall skill, you name it. he knows what he's doing. but he's sometimes treated like a senile man who by some stroke of luck won some races 200 years ago and who 'only knows how to drive starting first'🙄
