F1 Re-Watch 2013: Round 10 - Hungary

I'm totally not watching this during a race week to try and manifest a Lewis win what are you talking about?

We are finally half-way through my 2013 season watch through! And this is one that I did not see at all at the time (because I was not on the ball with the highlights programmes scheduling). So my only memory of this race was hearing that Lewis won (either on the news, or during the Belgian GP coverage) and not being that surprised bc I was so used to hearing about him winning on the news growing up 😅

I feel like this is quite a momentous race lore wise, with it being Lewis' first with Mercedes which preceded everything he's gone on to achieve since, so I'm beyond excited to see this one!

(also, also, we get a Sewis podium 🥳)

Since this is a noteworthy race I've got some chocolates for the occasion

oh so this was the first Hungary race to have two DRS zones? wild

anyway - Starting Grid!: Lewis pole, Seb P2, this was very much a race for me. Grosjean P3?! Good for him! Dan P8? also good for him. Jenson P13 and Jev P14... why 😭

(again, this is why I call it starting grid whiplash)

Rosberg had some mechanical gremlins on the grid apparently, inch resting

oh wild, comms aren't expecting Lewis to have the pace to win??? I am legit fascinated as to how this race unfolds then

[Formation Lap]: Softs and Mediums are the tyres for this race

cut to the mad dash of mechanics and engineers running to get back to the garages. F1's answer to athletics.

wild that this was Lewis' fourth pole of the season, but the first he was able to convert into a win

cut to Ross Brawn and Andrew Shovlin doing their best 'wind machine at Eurovision' impression in the garage

[Start/Lap 1]: Oh Lewis has zoomed off the line!!

Seb just about stays in P2

There is a COLOSSAL scrap over P3 I don't know where to look

[Lap 2]: Lewis with a 1.1 second lead already, he is GOATING folks

and I think all the various scraps have calmed down dsibvhfdi

oh jeez the start replay, Grosjean, Rosberg and Alonso all tried to overtake Seb going down to turn 1

[Lap 12]: He's also switched to mediums... and comes out behind Lewis and Jenson

so we have a Lotus 1-2 as they're both still to stop, note the date and time

And suddenly, Fernando appears behind the squabbling pair

so at other tracks, coming up behind a car that started on a harder tyre isn't a total disaster, but at a track like the Hungaroring where it's really hard to overtake, it can completely ruin your race

[Lap 21]: Top 5 still the same, Webber and Jenson still to stop. Lewis is 4 seconds behind Mark.

now 3.8 seconds, he's closing

[Lap 23]: Grosjean makes another look at trying to get past Seb but still isn't close enough

[Lap 24]: and Webber makes his first stop, he goes onto another set of mediums

And Seb gets past Jenson at turn 4!!!!!

I wondered why Grosjean had good pace but finished nowhere near the podium, that may be why

like the 2017 and 2018 seasons were very stressful at the time for me as a Seb fan. but with hindsight it was so brilliant to be able to see the two of them fight it out for the championship.

Aw man, that was a pretty great race! Lots of on-track battles both up front and in the midfield... and Lewis getting his first ever Merc win and what was then his 4th win at Hungary 🥹

Boston was moving from chilly too warm with still more cold days than not. Boston at this time was beautiful even The Evans home was littered with flowers. The beginning of 2021 has been eventful for the Evans Family.

Chris's A Starting Point has taken off like no one had expected, doing incredible number in educating a whole generation on one of Chris’s passions politics and the world.

While Maya within the few months has launched her skincare line Lavish Lilah Skin, and has been able to open back up her dermatology offices with the slowing down of the current devastating pandemic.

This Mothers Day for the family of 3 was different but the same at the same time.

Maya's Birthday has just passed, Chris filming schedule will pick up in the Summer and for the last year Delilah has been homeschooled.

With work picking up for the couple May 9th was a beautiful day for the Evans to just relax and be together as a family.

Its 9 am and Maya was sprawled in the middle of their California King Bed as Chris and Delilah were in the downstairs getting Maya's Mothers Day Gift ready.

"Ok Lilah you've got mommy's gifts and I've got the food you ready?" Chris asked with the tray in his hand.

Delilah nodded and they headed up the steps to the master bedroom the 5 year old ran up too the room first leaving Chris in her dust.

"Mom wake up its Mommy Day" Delilah said trying to climb the large bed.

Maya began to stir awake with a smirk on her face when she heard her baby girl struggle to to get up on the bed.

Delilah hooped on the outerman at the front of the bed and climbed to her mom laying up on Chris's said of the bed.

Delilah began to play with Maya's face.

"mommy get up me and daddy have gifs" Delilah said trying to open Maya's eyes with her little fingers.

Maya breaks out into a laugh now completely awake and pulling Delilah into a big hug kissing her all over the face.

When Chris walked in his two favorite girls were both laughing their heads off the sunlight in the room glowed on their golden skin as their smiling faces brought a bright smile to his.

"Are you two having fun without me" Chris asked as he walked to Maya's side of the bed.

Chris lays the tray on the night stand, pecking Maya on the lips mumbling a sweet Happy Mothers Day against her lips as he pulls her into a deeper kiss just enjoying the taste of her sinful lips.

When they pull away Maya moves over to make room for Chris in their large bed.

Delilah and Chris handed over the gifts to Maya, it wasn't a lot just some small things a card made by Maya from her zoom arts class, a mini breakfast in bed and more flowers *like she needed anymore*.

"Sweetheart I told you that you didn't have to do anything for me for Mothers Day especially everything you have done for me recently" Maya said taking sip from her coffee mug.

Chris chuckles thinking about the last few months, and he has been what you would call a rockstar husband.

With the pandemic Chris has been home a lot more he dropped a film he planned to star in and went full throttle on ASP which kept him home a lot making him kind of a stay home dad.

Chris did everything from some cooking to cleaning to school with Delilah. Him staying home was not only for him to do ASP and spend more time with his family but to let Maya work and bring her employess back so she can get her dermotobly practice back to as close to 100% as she can during a pandemic.

Not only that Chris hosted a surprise launch party/brithday party for Maya's new skincare venture in early April that was a small get together with all there closest friends and family (that were vaccinated). Even flying her parents who they haven’t seen in a year out to see them. (who were still in town and staying out in their guest home)

The three were still sitting in bed watching cartoons.

"My love if you thought today would go by and I would not celebrate you then you are out of your mind" Chris said kissing Maya's head.

The last four months have really shown Chris how much he admires Maya because everything he has been doing is what Maya has been doing since Dede was born.

So at least for today Chris was pulling out the red carpet for love of his life, after an hour of just lazying around Chris grabbed a now napping Delilah and told maya that she need to be dressed and ready to leave the house by 1pm which was 2 hours from the current time.

When 1pm hit the Evans and the Alonsos were out of the house and all in Maya's Truck.

They drove the 3 hours to the Alonso Family Estate in Martha's Vineyard and with Maya having absolutely no idea where they were going she grew antsy because unbeknownst to everyone in the car except her mother Maya was now Pregnant with her and Chris's second child and she was afraid she was going to have an accident in the car.

Maya was about 16 weeks how she has hide being pregnant from Chris for that long is a surprise and a miracle on its own.

However she just wanted to wait until she was absolutly sure that she could carry a complete trimester before telling anyone but her mom because her and Chris have tried 5 times after Delilah and has miscarred everytime.

All that faliure takes a toll not only on your body but on your psyche and she didn’t want to keep getting Chris's hopes up to keep failing him.

Even though he has been there through it all to hold her when she cries thinking about it or pick her up from the pool of blood in the middle of the night he was there holding her hand, but the of how many more times will he be able to do this with her still creeps in the back of Maya's mind.

Her mom's reassuring smile kept her calm while Chris and Maya held hands the entire ride up as they rolled up around 5pm to the estate that had multiply cars in the driveway.

When they walked in Maya's Brothers were both there along with Chris's parents, siblings and their kids.

Chris explained to Maya that with the kids out of school they all decided to being summer vacation a bit early.

As the night went on the all talked, laughed, ate good food and enjoyed each others company as one huge blended family.

It was coming up around 7pm it was golden hour outside and Maya knew for some reason it was time to tell Chris.

As Maya walked outside closet to the horses her mom followed.

"May baby cakes its time you can't live in fear forever" handing the ultrasound she kept in her purse and walking back into the house Maya took a deep breath as she sipped on her water and looked at sun hint the vinyard in the most majestic way.

"Maya you ok your mom wanted me to come and check in on you" Chris asked walking next to Maya who bit her lip which she did whenever she was nervous.

"Babe whats wrong" Chris knew something wasn't right the her body langague was and Chris could read his wife.

Maya tightly gripped the ultrasoud and turned toward Chris looking into his ocean blue eyes made her weak at the knees but she needed to focus.

She handed him the photo

"For the last 16 weeks or so I haven't found a way to tell that we are pregant and I guess this is it I am sorry I waited so long" Maya Says.

She smirks trying to keep it light hearted and Chris Smiles not even taking enough time to really process the new information with tears in his eye picking up Maya who squeals as he spins her around.

"I hope you know I knew already” he says putting her down leaving his arms around her waist.

"What do you mean you knew" Maya asked as her eyebrows frowned as she looked up at him.

"You underestimate how well I know your body" Chris says rubbing his hands up and down the curves of her body till her reached her ass giving it a good squeeze.

"Also you definitely did not hide this ultrasound that well so when I did first have hunch you had already confirmed it to me without even knowing it" Chris said.

He gave Maya his trademark smile and kissed his wife like his life depended on it.

"why didn’t you tell me you knew" she asked breaking the sweet embrace of the two lovers.

"the same reason you didn't I know that with you even though I hate it, some times I need to just watch from the sideline before you can put me in coach, but next time please do wait this long" Chris said.

Maya eyebrow raised "who said there will be a next time you better be lucky you are even getting 2 out of me sir" she said.

Chris laughs "thats what your mouth is saying now we will see what it says later when you riding papi's cock" He said kissing her lips even harder as they fought for domanice.

They knew both of there families were inside and thats why they stopped and just stood enjoying each others company.

"lets take a picture babe for memories" Chris said.

They pulled apart and Maya laughed .

"Chris look at you trying to take flicks for the gram" Maya said posing next to her favorite horse.

Chris took the picture and put it on his instagram along with a picture of Maya when she was pregnant with Delilah.

Chris laughed grapped her hand and they walked inside and told everyone the good news.

This will definaly be a Mothers Day they would never forget!

There was something about lying on a beach, pretending that the world didn’t exist. The sun was warm, the sand was soft and white, and the sound of families and children having fun was almost like a lullaby. He’d chosen a beach in Sicily, knowing that no-one he knew was going to be there. Everyone else was either on holiday on some far-away destination, or staying at home. He was far away from everyone, and he loved it.

“This is the life.” He smiled, putting his shades on. “I’m never leaving this beach.”

“I think McLaren might have something to say about that.” He heard someone say from above him. Someone who sounded a lot like…

“Robert?” Fernando peered over his shades, frowning. “What are you doing here?”

“Escaping the world, probably like what you are doing.” Robert shrugged. “I have been coming here for years.”

“It is a lovely beach.” Fernando sighed. “I have never been more comfortable.”

Robert laughed, dropping onto the sand by Fernando. “It is pretty perfect here. And do you know what makes it even more perfect?”

“What is it?”

“There is the best ice-cream shop round the corner. We could go and get some, come back and eat them? If you wanted some company?”

He’d come to find some solitude, away from everyone. He was trying to put the first half of the season behind him, and he was hoping that a bit of peace and quiet would do the trick. But having Robert around didn’t feel like an intrusion, it never had done. And Robert was far enough removed from his life at the minute, it wasn’t really like his career was following him. Not completely.

“Sure, that sounds good.” Fernando yawned, pushing himself up. “I don’t know how I am tired, I’ve only been napping on the beach all day.”

“It’s the most tiring thing, doing nothing.” Robert gave him his hand, pulling Fernando up. “Come on, ice-cream is waiting!”

“You’re right, this ice-cream is fantastic.” Fernando moaned, tilting his head back. “I want to marry this ice-cream.”

“Told you.” Robert grinned. “I said it was the best ice-cream.”

“Do you think that they can move around with me?” Fernando asked. “I’ll pay them double. No, triple! They could be my own personal ice-cream people!”

“I think that ice-cream is getting to your head.” Robert chuckled. “So, did you have anything else planned for the day? Or just lying on the beach?”

“Lying on the beach is good.” Fernando tried to defend. “But I was not expecting company, and now that you’re here… it might be nice to do something. What do you normally do here?”

“Well, there’s going back to the beach. Or swimming. Or there’s a swim park, that’s not far away.”

“There’s an amusement park?!” Fernando cried, almost losing control of his ice-cream. “You needed to lead with that!”

“Ice-cream the swim park?” Robert asked, keeping an eye on Fernando’s ice-cream.

“Ice-cream, then more ice-cream, then swim park. Then maybe more ice-cream.” Fernando corrected. “I never want to leave this place, are you sure they can’t come with me?”

“Pretty sure.”

“Oh my god…” Fernando breathed, looking around with wide eyes. “This is heaven.”

“And you had planned to just stay on the beach all day.” Robert shook his head. “No adventure Alonso. You have no adventure.”

“I have lots of adventure, just watch.” Fernando resisted the urge to stick out his tongue. “Race down the slides?”

“I bet I can get down that slide in 30 seconds.”

“I bet I can do it in 20.” Fernando countered, heading towards the slide tower. “What shall we go for? Zoom of Doom?”

“With a name like Zoom of Doom? Why are we not on it yet?”

“This has officially been the best day ever.” Fernando sighed, stretching out on a sun lounger. “I did not think I wanted to see anyone, and it turns out that seeing you was the best thing that could have happened.”

“No problem.” Robert yawned, stretching his arms out. “You were just going to lie on a beach all day. You can do that anywhere. You just needed a little push, no-adventure.”

“I totally have adventure.” Fernando replied lazily. “I have so much adventure, I am going to order two very amazing and awesome cocktails, cocktails that I don’t know what is in them, and they are going to have little umbrellas in them.”

“Go for it, no-adventure.”

“I will, once I have the energy to move.” Fernando wiggled a little, rolling on to his side. “How did you find me, anyway? Did you actually just turn up by accident?”

“Happy accident. But I was really glad to run into you. We have not really seen each other in such a long time, and it’s nice to see someone from the old days. I’ve missed this.”

“I’ve missed this too.” Fernando agreed. “I did not want to see anyone from the Paddock, not even Mark, and he’s the only one I’d happily talk to. But it was nice to hang out with you, we haven’t caught up in ages.”

“It really was.” Robert smiled, nudging Fernando. “And we really did have the best ice-cream.”

“That ice-cream.” Fernando moaned. “I really want to marry that ice-cream.”

“Cocktails and ice-cream?” Robert offered. “We can go and watch the sunset?”

“Sounds great.” Fernando smiled. “Actually, that sounds amazing.”

“Good. Come on.” Robert stood up, holding out a hand to Fernando. “That ice-cream waits for no-one, not even you.”

“That ice-cream will wait for me.” Fernando growled. “It will.”

“I’m so glad we got back to the ice-cream.” Fernando said happily, shuffling into the sand. “I’m so comfortable, and we have that ice-cream again. This is happiness.”

“Okay, I can do that.” Fernando agreed, kissing him again. “I am going to do this forever, for as long as you want.”

F1 Re-Watch 2013: Round 1 - Australia

Well, given how the past few days have gone, I thought I’d have to sideline my next full-season re-watch, but for the moment here we are!

Long story short, I had way more fun than I expected watching the 2022 season back. So I decided I wanted to watch another season in full (only one with much more personal enjoyment value) so I put up a poll and 2013 won. 

Which is very fitting, as 2013 was the year I got back into watching F1, but a little more story time on that when we get to Spain and Canada.

While I watched all of the races from the second half of the season, I think I only watched 3 or 4 races from the first half in full. So a lot of these races I will have never seen before, including Aus (the irony of calling this a re-watch is not lost on me). So much rambling aside, let’s jump on in!

I forgot to add that the first three races will be out of sequence as I watched Malaysia in honour of Multi-21 day back in March

Now for the re-watch we’re still going to have starting grid whiplash but instead of “what do you mean X is starting in 12th?!” it’s going to be “Oh my god remember when Adrian Sutil was team mates with Paul di Resta?!”

(I realise this now makes me somewhat of an elder in the fandom and... well it’s too late in the evening my time to be mulling over shit like that)

Seb with a good start, Massa with an even better start and just mugged Webber off the line. Alonso also went from P5 to P3, so Lewis is down a spot

Jenson in 9th... 2013 was the start of McLaren’s current woes and it was a painful year as a Jenson fan 

meanwhile, Raikkonen passes Lewis for P4. the Lotus is zoomy.

[Lap 3]: Man it does feel so strange seeing all the old team names (for any newbies, a lot of the teams on the grid now were teams from the 2013 grid rebranded. That’s why Alpine sometimes get called Team Enstone and Aston Martin Team Silverstone bc they got rebranded so much but the personnel mostly stayed the same).

but anyway a clean first few laps, on the first race of a new season, with a tiny bit of racing???? besties we did not know how good we had it.

Seb just zooming off into the distance. He didn’t win in Aus, but still the story of 2013.

“How long will these super soft tyres last?” it’s been ten years, and yet we still hate on Pirelli. oh my.

[Lap 4]: heh. remember when Perez was a McLaren driver that one time?? (spoiler alert it didn’t end well)

Not Fernando nearly crashing into Lewis at the start bc they were both trying to avoid a very slow Mark. FELLAS.

and Jenson is the first car to stop, supers for mediums.

[Lap 5]: ahem TEEEEEED!!!!!

oh wow he thinks the go-to strategy for the race is a 3 stop. a 3 stop.

It’s been 84 years.

One stop races used to be impressive bc of making the tyres last. but now they’re the norm and quite boring.

[Lap 6]: anyway replays of Dan racing van der Garde (Caterham). Midfield spice!!!

[Lap 7]: The Ferrari’s are both catching Seb. Seb’s tyres are also looking very unhealthy.

and in he pits for his first stop.

[Lap 8]: Massa is still ahead of Alonso. my eye is twitching.

nvm Massa pits to give Fernando the lead.

That’s what, three race leaders in 8 laps???

[Lap 9]: oooh Seb jumped Massa at his first stop. nice.

“Have Ferrari made a mistake with not covering Sebastian Vettel?” ...have Ferrari EVER had a functioning strategy department????

oh wow Raikkonen chasing down Alonso... it really is the 2010s. They even follow each other into the pits.

and they maintain their positions coming out of the pits, just further down the grid.

[Lap 10]: Lewis in the lead!!! (I know, he still needs to stop)

[Lap 11]: Merc 1-2. to think in 2013 that was a rarity 🤣

“Weather wise there are pretty dark clouds coming towards us” I’m in danger

[Lap 12]: Helmet watch: Seb has a super pretty cobalt blue design which I love.

[Lap 13]: “Raikkonen the fastest man on track at the moment” F1 2010s intensifies

Meanwhile the Mercs are still yet to stop while everyone else’s tyres have crumbled

[Lap 14]: and Lewis finally pits for mediums

ah yes, 2013 aka try to tell the Merc driver apart by their different shades of yellow helmet. (Nico’s was a brighter yellow, Lewis’ a more sunflower yellow, fyi)

[Lap 15]: And Rosberg pits, giving the lead of the race to... Adrian Sutil. Breathe it in folks.

“evidence there of McLaren’s lack of pace” for comparison, Jenson and McLaren won in Australia the year prior. They were very average for the two seasons before the dreaded Honda years.

[Lap 16]: Anyway I’m just trying to soak up a Force India leading the race. Go get it Team Silverstone.

The main reason why he’s still leading is because he started on the mediums as he qualified outside the top ten (2013 was also way back when you had to start on the tyre you set your Q3 lap on if you were in the top 10)

(this was also way back when we had just two dry compounds of tyre per race instead of the three we have now)

[Lap 22]: Sutil finally makes his first stop, and Seb makes his second.

And Sutil stays ahead of Seb, and they come out behind the Ferraris.

Fun fact, Bradley Joyce of ‘BRAAAAAAAD’ fame, who is now head engineer at Aston, was Sutil’s race engineer.

[Lap 23]: Looks like Ferrari are trying the two-stop with Massa.

Woot, Seb passes Sutil for P6!

Just to hammer home how bad a race Webber is having, he just passed Perez for 10th.

and this is how Raikkonen gets the lead from starting P7.

and cut to “Rain Expected” on the Force India pit wall. I was having a great time and now I’m being ATTACKED.

Ah, Maldonado is beached in the gravel at turn 1. No VSC as that didn’t exist yet, so just waved yellows

[Lap 27]: Rosberg pulls off to the side of the track, Merc went poof

I mean Also did get past in the very next corner. But still, iconique.

[Lap 32]: and he comes in at the end of the lap for another stop which I’ve very much lost count at this point.

[Lap 33]: Both Force Indias are in the top 10???? Team Silverstone intensifies

In weather news I think it’s stopped raining?? so nowhere near enough rain for anyone to think about inters.

[Lap 34]: Ah, Lotus have remembered to pit Raikkonen. I want to say that’s his second stop but I’ve truly no idea at this point.

[Lap 35]: “My tyres are not going to last 23 laps at this rate” Gonna call that the og ‘Bono my tyres are gone’ for the memes.

[Lap 37]: In what I’m now calling Sutil watch: He’s in P3. P3!!!!

we’re way past midfield spice and in full on midfield elation territory.

[Lap 38]: Seb makes his final pit stop. Another set of mediums, and he’s behind Lewis in 5th

[Lap 39]: So, Alonso in the lead, Sutil P2, Raikkonen P3. Not the top 3 I expected to by typing out. I’m pretty sure that Force India finish off the podium but yeah, still very wild.

[Lap 40]: And Alonso makes his final stop, he comes out behind Raikkonen.

and Seb passes Lewis for P4.

Sutil still has to stop bc he needs to run the super softs.

Massa racing Lewis and it lasted all of two seconds bc of Lewis’ 2-stop strategy.

[Lap 41]: And Dan DNFs with a mechanical fault. He has the worst luck at Albert Park I swear

[Lap 42]: Webber chasing down Di Resta for 8th.

Ooooh and a nice move under braking going into turn 9

[Lap 43]: and Lewis switches over to a 3 stop. He comes out in 6th.

And Raikkonen takes the lead off Sutil, while Alonso is chasing both of them down nearly hand over fist.

[Lap 46]: nvm Alonso passed him anyway, but still, the disrespect

I’m not going to comment on Crofty’s “papal conclave” stats dive because otherwise I will cry laughing and it’s twenty to one in the morning.

[Lap 48]: them cutting to Martin Whitmarsh on the pitwall when McLaren are 9th and 12th, I would simply pretend there was a bad connection because OUCH

[Lap 49]: Anyway, Alonso is 7.8 seconds behind Raikkonen

This race really has had almost everything. whew.

[Lap 58]: Final lap! And thanks to Brundle I just realised there hasn’t been a safety car at all this race, which for Melbourne is wild.

[Finish]: And Raikkonen wins! Alonso P2, Seb P3.

Massa, Lewis, Webber, Sutil, di Resta, Jenson and Romain Grosjean round out the Top 10.

Well! That was certainly more eventful than I expected, mainly due to trying and failing to keep track of all the pitstops. But we did get some nice splashes of racing, especially in the midfield. And more than expected whiplash of “OH!!! It’s that person!!!”. I will hopefully get used to the 2013 grid again after a few races 😅

But overall, a pretty decent race. As mentioned at the start of the post, I’ve already watched Malaysia, so the next race will be China, and then we’ll be in sync with the 2013 calendar!

F1 Re-Watch 2022: Round 9 - Canada

Ah, the return to Circuit Gilles Villeneuve (beloved)!

I find it ironic that I’m calling this series/thing/me yelling into the abyss a re-watch when I did not watch that much of C4s Highlights shows last year, but anyway. So again, I don’t remember much from Montreal, mainly drama about Seb’s helmet, Merc porpoising and Alonso’s penalty debacle.

whew Charles made it P5 in the end. Once again having Ferrari’s braincell.

Well, that was a race. Bit of a slow burn but didn’t quite deliver in the end, and we had some midfield spice, but not quite enough for me. It again felt more like a strategy race than a race race, especially with all the safety cars.

6 and a half front wings out of 10. Next race: Silverstone!!
