More than likely, Viktor “I Have Gorgeous Eyes But Cross Me And I’ll Shoot Laser Beams Out Of Them” Nikiforov probably made every banquet attendee swear not to leak anything, realizing Yuuri might not want that level of media attention.

We now know Viktor didn’t realize Yuuri was that drunk, so his desire for discretion back then was probably more along the lines of “well I’m so famous and this level of scrutiny is something Yuuri probably isn’t used to, best to keep this quiet” and less of the “Woe is me! My future husband was trashed the night he captured my soul, gotta keep this hush hush” variety.

Ahh, in-universe social media freak-outs: I love writing them, and the above excerpt/text message image is from my latest one-shot: part 1 of an eventual 3-part series about the aftermath in the event that the public finds out about the Sochi GPF Banquet shenanigans, four years after the fact.

As in: well after the Yuuri of my fic-verse wins gold at the 2018 Winter Olympics, as well as after he and Viktor get married.

The ensuing chaos has the potential for humor, of course, but also major feels, which is what attracted me to wanting to write about it in the first place

In my fic-verse, our YOI faves are having a hell of a time in Turin, Italy, enjoying themselves at the 2019 GPF Banquet, which ends up being a celebration of Yuuri winning his second GPF title (just a few points ahead of Yurio).

Due to Mila and Sara's peer pressure, Yuuri and Yurio drink far too much of the locally reknown grappa, which leads them to 1) set off together in search of more substantial food than the slim hors d'oeuvres pickings, and 2) accidentally go live on Instagram while discussing what went down in Sochi (well, it's more like Yurio slurring in his explanation and Yuuri interjecting now and again with incoherent "wait a secccc, tha' wuzz me? I did that?!" exclamations)

Needless to say, when a few Yuri's Angels record the live and upload it online, the internet EXPLODES; up until this point, everyone had believed Yuuri and Viktor's relationship origins to be pretty straightforward: they've been together since October 2016 and since then, they've never hinted at anything even slightly chaotic happening in Sochi.

Part 1 focuses on everyone's initial reactions the morning after Yuuri and Yurio's livestream; part 2 will be hurt/comfort-focused, as both Viktor and Yuuri grow insecure (though, for very different reasons); and the final part will feature Yuuri and Viktor hosting their own (sober) livestream to "take command of the narrative", as Yuuri's extremely stressed publicist suggests

I've seen some theorise that Tomura decaying represents "the death of tomura shigaraki a being of hate and the false persona created by afo" which means that tenko shimura is free and can live again (considering the roles names and identities play in mha). What's your opinion on that?

hard disagree especially considering the story is now trying to sell us that "tenko" is also an afo construct, from his family struggles to his heroic hopes to even his fuckin birth lmao. i fall in line with what @codenamesazanka said about 'shigaraki' and 'tenko' as personas here, where despite afo's influence there is something real. it's weird to say that shigaraki is false because of afo's influence when what we learned is that tenko as a whole exists because of afo's influence. both of them have gotta be real or fake or nothin.

but i would have disagreed even without the 419 development. i never agreed with the interpretation of there being a clean break between tenko and tomura. shigaraki's frustrations and desires stem from what he experienced as a child, even with the amnesia; tomura's formed his own relationships and goals beyond afo; he straight up has just spent more of his lived life as tomura than he did as tenko. SHIGARAKI is the character that i first fell in love with, because he's enough of a full, charismatic, and engaging character on his own without being reduced to a crying child.

i'm also kind of so-so on whatever people might be saying about names and identities? i think that there is importance there, but it's not that going by one name or another indicates entirely discrete personas. i don't wanna do an in-depth thing about it, but i pulled a couple of quotes about the whole hero/codename thing to reference.

What future do you see for yourself? The name you choose will bring you ever close to cementing a certain image…because names are capable of reflecting one’s true character.

the phrase "cementing a certain image" could be interpreted as trying to put up a false persona, but "names are capable of reflecting one's true character" messes with that, because it's the new hero names that are meant to represent that truth. more accurately, i'd say that hero names evoke an idealized self that the students are learning to embody. midoriya reclaims deku, tsuyu as cutesy froppy is meant to be approachable, shoto is trying to self-actualize as himself, bakugou wants to murder people with explosions, kirishima and iida are trying to live up to their personal heroes, etc etc.

at no point are the kids trying to be something that they aren't. they're working towards who they want to be.

if one wants to argue about different names symbolizing different selves/personas, the best example is probably all might/toshinori, who does literally do his hero work as a separate persona up until kamino. but most of his story afterwards is that learning that just because he no longer as one for all, the power that made him all might, doesn't mean he actually stops being a hero/all might. as badly demonstrated by him donning that dumb fucking mecha. in any case he more or less reconciles those parts of himself i guess.

in contrast, we have this more recent lore about codenames:

There basically used to be no difference between heroes and villains. One theory says…the alias stuff started when you’d have an anonymous enemy and needed to call them something. From there, some decided to adopt those very nicknames to hide their identities. Assuming another identity - like a new skin - was a matter of survival. At some point, they went all-in with code names, ripped straight from comic books. According to this theory, it all started with people announcing themselves by those aliases. That’s why the world’s turned into a comic book.

Shigaraki, Chapter 393

here we do have the claim that adopting a new name is similar to adopting a new identity, which lends itself to the idea that you're trying to escape an original/true self, or protect that self from harm. spinner, twice, and dabi are all in ways trying to reinvent themselves, to escape or separate from the things that hurt shuuichi, jin, and touya. mr compress it just stylish. that doesn't stop who they WERE being a part of who they ARE, though. there's also no way for them to go back to who they were, it's just part of them.

it's also really interesting that toga and shigaraki explicitly did not take on villain names (because shigaraki tomura isn't a villain name, because one, this is before he recovers his memories as tenko and two, literally just his name, that he lives every day with.), because they make no pretense about approaching villainy as anything but themselves. this is toga's whole deal, that she wants to live in the world as herself without compromise.

overall, i'd approach the idea of names + identities the same way i approach the running narrative thread about 'origins'. in a sense these origins represent a "truth" about the characters, but it's not that these origins are the only true thing about them. the origins act as a starting point, a reminder of what the characters value and what they want to do. it's grounding, not all encompassing.

anyways nah shigaraki was never anymore false that tenko is and that's that i guessssssssss no matter what. the story says.

i don’t really have anything to say about this one. it’s another fic about the inherent horrors of anchoring! it’s exactly what it says on the tin! read it if you wanna have a bad time with Mahar!

well, okay, a couple of things. this was very loosely inspired by @elan-morin-tedronai’s every sky, which is a really excellent set of vignettes over a sixty-year relationship. the two fics don’t have a lot in common but the characterization influence is definitely there, and also it kind of took over my brain and now I can’t write Mahar in anything other than second person. it’s a compelling perspective for him: second person gives some readers the sense that they’re being addressed directly, but to me it can evoke a very specific kind of intimacy/detachment, a POV as close as first person but with a character who refers to themselves as “you,” the vibe of trying to order your body around in your own internal monologue because yourself isn’t really listening. very good. a stylistic choice i am happy to copy.

I do differ from every sky on one point: I think Kujen’s anchors usually survive the arrangement. Yes, he disposes of Jedao’s anchors, but Jedao’s are mostly prisoners and Kel; Kujen’s are usually researchers. and it’s a hell of a leap to go from euthanizing anchors as soon as you’re finished with them to offering the last one moth-derived immortality! that is one of the things Algebraic is about. among other things.

What would be the most embarrassing thing that could happen if you were supposed to be doing cool werewolf things in Victorian London? It would be werewolf hip dysplasia."

Deakins leaned against the wall and laughed, breathless and flushed, hardly managing a few wheezes before gasping again. "Close one, eh?" she paused, waiting for some sign of his displeasure, another grouse to tease him for. "Reeve?"

Reeve lay where he'd fallen, panting, jaws open and tongue lolling. He hadn't been right, he knew he hadn't-- something had gone wrong during the change. He was incomplete, somehow, what he had dismissed as stiffness of many winters now manifesting as deficiency. He lay on his side, dirtying himself on the grimy cobbles.

He could do nothing else.

"Reeve?" Deakins knelt next to him, hands hovering. "What is it?"

He couldn't even tell her not to be stupid-- speech was beyond him, and the pain in his hip made thinking of some signal much too difficult. He let out a long whine, discomfort and frustration both.

"You hurt yourself? Is that it? Where?"

He tried vainly to struggle to his feet, but gave up and slumped back to the ground. Deakins hesitated, her deeply-ingrained instinct against going anywhere near a downed wolf warring with her desire to help.

"Look, you just tell me when I touch something that hurts, how's that?" she didn't wait for an answer before plunging her hands into the thick ruff of fur at his neck, running hands over ridged ribs and poking warily at his belly. He warned her off his paws with a growl, but she jostled his bad leg and was rewarded with a high yelp.

"Alright," she said, presumably for her own benefit. "And you can't get up at all?"

He only looked at her.

"Then we'll have to fetch a doctor," she declared. "I'll-- I'll carry you--"

The idea was obviously impossible, which didn't stop Deakins from gathering him in her arms for an abortive attempt. She succeeded only in dragging his wounded leg over the cobbles, causing him to cry out. Later, he would wonder what power had kept him from sinking his teeth in her arm.

"Oh, I am sorry-- here, you-- you stay there, I'll fetch help--"

Don't be stupid! Reeve would have called after her, had it been in his power. For now, all he could do was lie helpless in the alley, wondering what would become of him when the moon set and he was stranded and crippled in enemy territory...

His ears pricked at the sound of approaching footsteps. "Just this way," Deakins was saying, "my friend is down this alley-- remember, there's money in it for you, for your help and your discretion..."

Had Reeve been able to voice his opinion, he would have sided with the old man and declined to be wheeled about in a dustcart like yesterday's rubbish. He certainly would have refused the dustman's terms-- Deakins muttered a quick "I am sorry, old boy" before looping an old belt around his jaws, cinching it tight. It took both of them to finally heave him up and over into the cart, dumping him with an unceremonious thud that made him glad of the makeshift muzzle-- the pain was enough to make him do something regrettable. He thrashed in agony, even as Deakins attempted to soothe him and the dustman threatened to fetch the police on them both.

For his part, the dustman pocketed the offered money without a word. When Deakins was pounding on the door, he leaned over the edge of the cart, watching Reeve with fearful fascination. "There's proof I tangled with one and lived to tell," he declared. Reeve wondered if it was for his benefit.

I don’t understand why so many people are saying that Matty dating Taylor is going to be the end of the band. They’ve survived worse, right? I mean they made it through Mattys addiction and then the Pandemic and all of that stuff. They make a point in every interview to say that they are each others first priority, and no girl has ever gotten in the way of that friendship.

Do we actually have to be worried about the band ending? I mean yeah… dating Taylor swift can change your reputation forever, but I feel like people are being dramatic. John Mayer, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Harry Styles are all still MASSIVELY successful people with careers. Dating Taylor Swift does not instantly doom you.

Is this a real concern or are people just dramatic and reacting because of the change?

I think it's a bit of both? like it's a concern, but not in the way that people are saying. Y'all feel free to chime in, if you feel differently. I don't think this is the end of the band or anything. Like, those boys are at their peak AND they love what they do (and each other) so much that it wouldn't just end like this.

That said, I do think that things are gonna be different. They haven't survived worse because....well, there has never been worse, lmao. I can't even compare it to other things that might have happened and stuff. I think Matty said the only thing that EVER came close to threatening their work together was his addiction, but even that...they handled it SO SO WELL bless George, Ross and Adam for what they've done to help Matty. and that was so internal and discrete. it never involved fuckin CNN headlines, and being with more celebs in a week than his entire fuckin life. not sure that he'd interact with this many A-listers at the Brits lmao.

I just think there's never been THIS much undesired attention especially the kind that is not about the music at all. Matty's not the celebrity that gets papped ( none of them are) or written about in this way or whatever. Thank you for your kind words! My ‘advice’ here is, quite frankly, of the calibre of a generic writing blog from page 16 of google, but here we go. Read the works of the masters (or simply those authors you love who do the thing well) and analyse and absorb! Pay attention to the mannerisms, verbal quirks, thoughts, moments of impudence or hesitation, etc., that the author worked in to create a fleshed out person. Study the texts that inspire you, implement your learning as you go and it will flow out of you beautifully in short(ish) order

2) I've been super curious, did you have this fic mainly written before having started posting, or are you just incredibly gifted in the art of time management? Either way, I'm super impressed that you have managed to post on such a consistent schedule! :)

I had a detailed outline (outlines help with maintaining writing pace because you don’t get stuck) and I always stayed at least 10 chapters ahead once I began posting last autumn, so the schedule wasn’t too difficult to keep on top of. My biggest challenge is letting go when posting time comes round. I am a compulsive editor, so having a schedule helps rip off the plaster and send the chapters into the world, imperfections and all.
