New Post has been published on https://www.packernet.com/blog/2023/04/19/grades-are-stupid/
Grades are stupid
Eating Cheetos. The daily horoscope. Playing candy crush on your phone. Nutritionally, and intellectually, these are empty activities. In that way, they’re just like post draft grades. And yet, they’re the junk food my sports junkie mind can’t resist.
Grades with meaning
Rather than reviewing worthless day after draft grades, let’s give some relevant draft grades. Although I consider Brian Gutekunst and his team to be above average drafters, the 2020 and 2021 drafts suggest otherwise.
D+ / Incomplete
In 2020 the packers draft picks were; 1-Jordan Love, 2-AJ Dillon, 3-Josiah Deguara, 5-Kamal Martin, 6-Jon Runyan Jr., 6-Jake Hanson, 6-Simon Stepaniak, 7-Vernon Scott, 7-Jonathan Garvin.
When your best pick is a guard selected in the 6th round, it’s not a good draft. You could argue Jon Runyan Jr. has been a steal. He’s been a fixture at starting right guard since early in his rookie year.
AJ Dillon has been a good, not great football player. He was a “reach” in the 2nd. Josiah Degurara joins a series of 3rd round fumbles by Gutey. He’s a respectable blocker and hybrid TE- fullback, but not the difference maker that you hope for in the 3rd. Jonathan Garvin has been an ok, end of the roster special teams and 5th edge rusher. The rest don’t merit discussion.
We still may Love this draft
By this time in 2024, the 2020 draft will either end or extend Brian Gutekunst’s tenure in Green Bay. In the next year or two we’ll have a pretty good idea if Jordan Love can play. Will he make Gutey look brilliant? Or lead to his firing? If Love becomes a top 15-20 starter, this draft goes from a D+ to a B. If Love becomes a top 15 or better NFL starter, an otherwise forgettable draft becomes an A.
2021
Selecting late in the 1st in 2021 the Packers surprised many taking Georgia corner Eric Stokes. Here’s the rest: 2nd Center Josh Myers, 3rd Amari Rodgers, 4th Royce Newman, 5th TJ Slaton, 5th Shemar Jean-Charles, 6th Cole Van Lanen, 6 Isaiah McDuffie, 7th Kylin Hill. To be kind, that’s not a Super Bowl winning foundation.
As a rookie, Stokes started every game and showed promise. Year two was a disaster. Early in the year Stokes played poorly before getting a serious knee/ankle injury near mid-season. Since speed is his greatest asset, his future looks doubtful.
When healthy, Josh Myers has been the starting center since he was drafted. As a rookie he was decent but not great. His play fell off in 2022. Fair or not, the Myers pick looks worse because Kansas City took All Pro center Creed Humphrey one pick after Myers.
TJ Slayton has contributed, and appears to be a player, but not a special one. Kylin Hill showed explosive potential briefly as a rookie before blowing out his ACL. He was cut late last year for off field issues. Newman, Jean-Charles and McDuffie are on the fringes of the roster. Van Lanen was traded for a 7th.
Speaking of a wasted 3rd round pick
When you look up “draft bust” in the dictionary you may see a photo of Amari Rodgers. As a rookie he could barely get on the field as a returner or receiver. Without his 3rd round pick status he would have been cut by the end of training camp. Then Coaches LaFleur and Bisaccia compounded a bad decision by sticking with Rodgers on returns for half the season in spite of a staggering fumble rate.
The only reason this draft isn’t an F is because Stokes, Myers and Slaton still have a window to prove their value. I wouldn’t bet on any of them being better than average. The 2021 Packers draft is a currently a D-.

For anyone who could’ve been made a star in AEW due to the success of this season of Dark Side Of The Ring
It could’ve been giving Jake Roberts more of a spot and give him more promo time due to the Grizzly Smith episode. Instead we barely see Jake and he seems to never get the opportunity to cut promos anymore
You could’ve elevated Brian Pillman Jr to an uppercard spot and work him and Griff Garrison to becoming the next AEW Tag Team Champions or even put Brian Pillman in contention for the TNT Champion due to the emotional success of the episode of his father. Instead the Bucks buried him and he barely appears.
But no. The person whom these idiots thought deserved a high and even a main event match, was that garbage wrestler and all around piece of fucking shit. Nick Gage. This fucking idiot does not need nor does he deserve a mainstream television exposure. WCW was not perfect, but there was no way in the fucking world that Eric Bischoff would ever expose a blithering fucking moron like Nick Gage to mainstream Television. TNT....HOW THE FUCK WOULD THEY EVER GREENLIGHT THIS???? This is the same company that had standards and practices that put a stop to anything that anyone in charge of WCW wanted to do. But now they would give Garbage Championship Wrestling mainstream exposure? Now this guy is costing AEW sponsors. I sure hope it was worth it Money Mark Khan.
btw, the Nick Gage episode was the lowest rated episode of the season.
btw again, there went the last of Chris Jericho’s dignity by allowing Deathmatch Wrestling’s biggest scumsucking piece of shit a mainstream exposure.
Give Jake Roberts more promo time? No. Make Brian Pillman Jr a star? lol no. The guy who uses a Pizza cutter, light tubes and other garbage that would’ve made Paul Heyman go “Get out of my fucking bingo hall” sure, let’s give him a main event match
PS. Jon Moxley is a fucking idiot for sticking up for this moron.

Away Days
Three away games on the trot for North End now as the rearranged Blackpool game causes a quirk in the fixture list. The first two of our road trips come this next week with a trip to the Principality on Saturday to face Cardiff City followed by the first trip in a while, for the fans, to Luton Town next Wednesday evening. There then follows, effectively, a sixteen day international break before battle recommences at Derby on April 2nd. North End go into this weeks double header on the road on the back of an excellent win at home to Bournemouth last Saturday afternoon in a game that saw North End cast aside the demons of the late concession at Coventry with a last minute winner to take the points against the Cherries.
Reflecting back to last Saturday it was one of those games when all three results were possible for much of the game. North End played quite well in the first half after having to concede quite a lot of possession early in the game. Once we got going we played decent enough stuff and I thought we were a little unfortunate to go one down early in the second half. The goal against seemed to galvanise us and when Archer equalised four minute later it was game on. However we had to wait until the last sixty seconds of normal time for substitute Emil Riis to smash home the winner and send the North End homes happy and looking forward to a much more pleasant weekend.
Saturday sees us make the 220 mile trip to the Cardiff City Stadium for our third encounter with the Bluebirds this season. North lost in Wales in the third round of the FA Cup back in January and also lost at Swansea later that month so that particular part of the world hasn`t been very fruitful so far this season. However, North End are generally playing better away than at home at the moment and although Cardiff`s form has improved under Steve Morison I am very hopeful that North End will get some sort of revenge on Saturday for the Cup defeat and with Cameron Archer in the side who knows just what is possible
Next Wednesday evening we travel to Kenilworth Road and although we have played the Hatters twice recently this will be the first time North End fans will have been inside the Stadium since a 0-2 defeat in December 2006. Luton have been very consistent this season and at the time of going to press they sit in the final play off position with fifty seven points which is seven more than North End and with a game in hand. Nathan Jones has done an excellent job in his second spell at Luton but they can be beaten at home and if North End are going to make any late surge into the top six this is a game they simply have to win. If North End can get six points from these two road trips then maybe, just maybe, we might be having a different conversation next weekend. There is a hell of a lot to do and the final push must start at 3pm on Saturday at Cardiff.
And finally this week:- very sad news at the passing of former North End wing half Frank O`Farrell this week at the age of ninety four. Frank was an integral cog in that great team of the late fifties who finished second to Wolves for the League Championship in 1958. Thinking about Frank going on to manage Manchester United I wondered who else had managed the Reds while having played for the Whites. There are two others in fact and both easily recognisable - Tommy Docherty and, of course, David Moyes. So I then started thinking who had done the reverse - ie Played for United and gone on to manage North End. Well the first to do that was a gentleman called Vinny Hayes who was in fact North End`s first ever manager in 1919, the team having been picked by committee previous to this. The came Bobby Charlton followed by Nobby Stiles. The fourth player was Brian Kidd who took over in the mid eighties when we were at our lowest ebb. Finally there was Darren Ferguson who managed 27 league games for United between 1990-1994.

The Ledge #502: Best Records of 2021 NYE Countdown
So your favorite online radio DJ decided to spend a bitterly cold New Year's Eve playing over six hours of the best music of 2021. But what else would I have done? New Year's Eve is amateur night, and I haven't ventured out of my house for the big night in years.
With the big night lining up with a Ledge weekly broadcast, the decision to do a "Casey Kasem" was easy. So this show is a true marathon. First off, there's a countdown of the 20 best reissues, box sets, compilations, and tribute albums of the year. Then there's a countdown of the 40 best albums of 2021, and we hit the stroke of midnight in the eastern and central time zones with tracks from some of the great singles and EP's of the year, along with tunes from a number of great albums that barely missed the cut of making the big countdown.
Honestly, while the world is melting down we are somehow seeing a cultural renaissance. How else could I put together a six hour playlist of nothing but music from the past year? It's simply incredible how much wonderful music is coming out on a weekly basis from all over the world. This is why I do The Ledge, and why there's an episode every month that consists of nothing but new releases.
I sincerely hope everyone enjoyed their holiday season, and that 2022 turns out to be a magical year for you all!
I would love it if every listener bought at least one record I played on either of these shows. These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs. And if you buy these records directly from the artist or label, please let them know you heard these tunes on The Ledge! Let them know who is giving them promotion! You can find this show at almost any podcast site, including iTunes and Stitcher...or
CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE SHOW!
Here's the tracklist of the entire show, beginning with a countdown of tunes from the 20 best reissues, box sets, and tribute records of 2021:
20. The Beatles, Don’t Let Me Down (First Rooftop Performance)
19. The Rolling Stones, Fiji Jim
18. The Jacks, (You're) so Wrong
17. The Dogmatics, Sister Serena
16. Green Day, 2000 Light Years Away
15. Sex Pistols, Anarchy In The UK
14. Neil Young, Helpless
13. PJ Harvey, The Life And Death Of Mr. Badmouth (Demo)
12. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Walls (No. 3)
11. Swell Maps, One of the Crowd
10. Elvis Costello & The Attractions, Pump It Up (feat. Juanes)
9. Bob Dylan, Blind Willie McTell (Take 5 - Infidels Outtake)

New Post has been published on https://www.packernet.com/blog/2021/04/27/hard-to-predict-what-the-packers-will-do/
Hard to predict what the Packers will do
The Green Bay Packers are coming off back-to-back 13-3 seasons that left them one game short of the Super Bowl. So they are not exactly a team with huge holes to fill, on either side of the ball. A little fine-tuning could be all the Packers need to get over the hump.
Now that we know Aaron Rodgers is going to be the quarterback not only this year, but for many years to come, we can put that to rest and focus on what he needs to win another Super Bowl. If the last ten years prove anything, it’s that Rodgers can’t win it all by himself. He is an all-time great QB, be he’s no Tom Brady, who simply makes everybody else on the team play better. Last year was proof of that. Nope, Rodgers is going to need more help, hopefully Thursday the Packers can find him some.
The Buccaneers will be Super Bowl favorites next year but the Packers should once again garner good odds. Check out Indiana sports betting to get started and take advantage of an 100% deposit match. The odds will likely change of the course of the draft, so bet wisely.
So what do the Packers need?
Since the start of last year the Packers signed the best left tackle in the league, one of the best running backs in the league, and one of the best nose tackles in the league, to contract extensions. You know who they are. They did lose center Corey Linsley in free agency, so that position could be considered one of need. But really, offensive line is always a position of need. I would have no problem if the Packers used their first pick on an offensive lineman.
If the Packers do go with a center I hope it is Creed Humphrey.
Of course, wide receiver is the position the media loves to use in creating the Rodgers hates the Packers narrative. It’s like the Packers have neglected the position for years just to spite Rodgers. Yeah, last year’s pick of Jordan Love was kind of a shocker, but by then all the bluechip receivers were off the board. Plus, the Packers had faith in the two receivers they drafted three years ago.
Somehow the Packers were able to have the number one offense in the NFL despite the incredible lack of talent they have opposite Davante Adams. In reality, the Packers don’t really need to draft a receiver in the first round, but if they do he better be ready to play right away. Picking at 29 that will be hard to come by.
If they go receiver I hope it is Terrace Marshall Jr.
What about the defense?
As usual, cornerback and linebacker are positions that could use some help. Even with Kevin King back, the Packers are still looking for that bookend corner to put opposite Jaire Alexander. They are also looking for that dynamic inside linebacker who can play sideline to sideline as well as cover dudes when needed. That elusive three down linebacker.
The team does have two promising young linebackers already, but if a guy like Zaven Collins is within range I could see the Packers making a move to get him.
If they go cornerback again, maybe a guy like Caleb Farley will fall within range of making a move. Or maybe he will even be there at 29. Dude has an injury history, but that is right up the Packers alley. Sometimes guys can put that history behind them, Farley might be worth the risk.
I have to believe that general manager Brian Gutekunst will try to move around again. He’s got 10 picks in this draft to play with. We can rule out quarterback, running back, and tight end, I think. But who knows, maybe Gutekunst has another surprise up his sleeve. Can’t wait for Thursday.

LaMelo Ball is unlocking Miles Bridges’ potential with the Hornets
Bridges finally feels fully optimized playing next to a brilliant passer like LaMelo Ball.
The first time Miles Bridges appeared on this website was in July of 2015 during the Nike Global Challenge in Chicago. At the time, Bridges was a rising high school senior out of Flint, MI who had blossomed into a five-star recruit on the grassroots circuit earlier in the summer. He was choosing between playing with De’Aaron Fox and Malik Monk (who were also at the event) at Kentucky, or Cassius Winston and two other top-50 recruits (Nick Ward and Josh Langford) at Michigan State.
Even back then, no one was quite sure what Bridges’ role would be. He was a strong and explosive 6’6 power wing who struggled to shoot and had a shaky handle but had immense explosiveness around the rim. How do you get a player like that going downhill toward the basket? As Bridges competed in Chicago, we were only weeks removed from the Warriors winning their first championship with a small ball attack, and months removed from Duke winning the NCAA tournament after shifting Justise Winslow from the three to the four.
“I know for sure that I’m a wing player,” Bridges told SB Nation at the event. “If a coach wants me to play stretch four sometimes, then I’ll be OK with it. I know I put in the work on my ball-handling, my shot is getting way better. So I feel I’m a two or a three in college.”
Bridges would eventually chose Michigan State. He typically played next to only one big man as a freshman but still spent most of his time spotting up on the perimeter (25 percent of his possessions, per Synergy Sports). Bridges was good enough to be projected as a late lottery pick, but he made a shocking decision to return to school after the Spartans were upset in the first weekend of the NCAA tournament. Bridges put up similar numbers as a sophomore mostly playing the three next to Jaren Jackson Jr., Ward, and Xavier Tillman. MSU lost in the first weekend of the tournament again (this time with Jackson Jr. on the bench), and Bridges was picked No. 12 overall by the Hornets, which is exactly where we had him slotted after his freshman year.
Bridges’ first years in Charlotte were mostly forgettable. As a rookie, he averaged 7.5 points playing off Kemba Walker while spending 53 percent of his minutes at small forward, per Basketball Reference. After Walker left in free agency that summer, the Hornets fell from a No. 8 seed hopeful to one of the worst teams in the league. Bridges almost doubled his scoring output in his second year, averaging 13 points per game, but was still struggling to score efficiently with below average 52 percent true shooting. He played 72 percent of his minutes at small forward in his second season.
Five years after he had John Calipari and Tom Izzo fighting for him as a recruit, Bridges still didn’t feel fully optimized as a player. That’s finally started to change this season on a Hornets team that is suddenly a factor in the Eastern Conference playoff picture. What happened?
Now, he gets to play with LaMelo Ball.
The Hornets are one of the NBA’s biggest surprises in the early part of the season. Entering Wednesday night, Charlotte was the No. 6 seed in the East. A year after posting a -7 net rating as a team, the Hornets were suddenly out of the red with a +0.4 net rating.
The Hornets aren’t great, but they feel genuinely exciting for the first time since they returned to Charlotte. Gordon Hayward has lived up to his big offseason contract to become of the primary scoring option. Terry Rozier is having a career year, and Malik Monk is finally starting to show what made him a lottery pick. There’s no doubt that Ball has been the catalyst, though. We had Ball as our top overall prospect in the draft, but he’s been even better than expected this early in his career after slipping to No. 3 on draft night, where Charlotte was happy to scoop him up.
Ball has injected life into the Hornets, and no one has been a bigger recipient than Bridges. It seems like the pair combines for at least one viral dunk every time they take the floor. Sometimes this happens in transition, where Ball loves to drop off behind-the-back passes and Bridges is one of the few players alive who can casually windmill to avoid a block.
LaMelo to Bridges. WOW. pic.twitter.com/OqNfl97raS
— NBA TV (@NBATV) February 4, 2021
It has been happening often in the pick-and-roll (more on that in a second), where Ball has a special knack for placing a lob where only Bridges can get it, and Bridges has a special knack for flying through the air to dunk home passes 6’6 forwards shouldn’t be able to gather.

And Ball’s classic outlet passes are also paying off even when they don’t result in highlight dunks. Ball will push the pace off any situation, including after made baskets as you’ll see in the second clip. Bridges knows the value of running the floor when you play with a guard who can get the ball out and up in every situation.
Really nice early rim run + seal in transition from Miles Bridges + hit-ahead look from LaMelo Ball. Phenomenal catch and 2nd jump finish from Bridges, too. pic.twitter.com/6KwboC575w
— Brian Geisinger (@bgeis_bird) February 9, 2021
Not even halfway through his rookie season, Ball has already created enough memorable plays with Bridges for their own highlight package. It’s proof of Ball’s magnetism as a lead guard. It’s proof his loudest critics had concerns that were totally overblown entering the draft.
It also shows how adding one key piece, particularly as a primary creator, can make everyone around them look better. Bridges, weeks short of his 23rd birthday, now looks a lot more interesting than he did last year.
youtube
Ball is ready and willing to throw any pass, especially the ones the defense doesn’t think are possible until he attempts them. That defenses also have to focus their attention on Hayward helps Bridges find openings, too, and he’s been more effective on those opportunities even if his per-game numbers are slightly down.
Finally, it feels like he’s finding the role he was always meant for.
The Hornets are putting Bridges in a better position to succeed on the floor
Part of the key to unlocking Bridges has been letting him attack mismatches with speed at the four rather than trying to use his strength to score on threes. Hornets coach James Borrego has committed to using Bridges exclusively as a big man for the first time in his career this season, and it’s been a big part of his breakout campaign.
Bridges has spent 93 percent of his time playing next to only one big this year, per Basketball Reference. He’s played only one percent of his time on the wing. This is a huge change from how Bridges has been used dating back to college. Even in his first two years in the league, he was playing small forward 53 percent and 72 percent of the time respectively.
Playing at the four has allowed Bridges to finally be used as a roll man rather than a spot-up shooter. Bridges has always had natural ability as a lob catcher but it’s rarely been made a focal point of his game. That’s changed this year, and the results have been electric.
Here’s are Bridges’ numbers as a roll man dating back to his freshman year at Michigan State, with the percentage of overall attempts that came as a roll man, the points per possession on those attempts, and how he graded out on those opportunities compared to his peers, per Synergy Sports.
That’s what Bridges’ roll man production looks like on a spreadsheet. It’s a little more fun to watch it on video.
Not even Joel Embiid could stop this one:
The Hornets have found their cornerstone of the future in Ball. Bridges is proving this season he can play a supporting role in whatever comes next.
Bridges has turned from prospect to player before our eyes this season. Finally finding the right way to leverage his talents has certainly helped. So has adding a sublime playmaker like Ball.

Impact vs Lucha Underground Review
Friday April 6th, from the Sugar Mill in New Orleans, Louisiana
Matanza vs Chavo Guerrero vs Jack Evans vs Caleb Konley vs Matt Sydal vs Moose[***]
We have a six pack challenge to start things off in this Impact vs LU show and the match was actually very solid, fun and fast pace offence. I loved how they got Konley to show off some stuff as usually Caleb is a jobber/weak link of the cult of lee. I also wished they got us more from Matanza and Moose in the match, because it's one of those big men showdowns i'd love to see one day and they just teased here. Matanza gets the win with his Wrath of the gods on Konley and post match Chavo revealed that LU season four is premiering on June 13th. Show started on a good note and let's hope it will go on like this
Knockouts Championship: Allie vs Taya Valkyre:[**1/2]
The match was ok but not as good as i expected: it was very slow and it kinda lacked some sense of urgency and also drama and it kinda felt that the title was not gonna change since theres a PPV in litteraly a few weeks. Also the finish felt very anticlimatic because Allie won after a backbreaker followed by a codebreaker. Hopefully Allie's match at Redemption will be much better and also i expect better stuff from Taya on thursday since she is squaring off with Rosemary in a Demon Dance which should steal the show.
OVE vs Teddy Hart&Scott Steiner:[*]
Another ok match and you wouldn't expect much else, since Steiner isn't young anymore and Hart did a fantastic job even tho it was a while since he wrestled. Not a fan of OVE jobbing but they lost because of steiner and also to make the crowd happy and for a stand alone event is fine. But since i'm a huge Scott Steiner mark, i should forget my previous complaint and enjoy the Big Daddy Booty do his stuff
King Cuerno, Aerostar&Drago vs Andrew Everett, DJ Z and Dezmond Xavier: [***1/4]
This match didn't fail to deliver and as you expect it was a really great spot fest with everyone showing off their best moves and keeping the match good, fast and also really enjoyable to watch. It's great to see DJZ in an Impact ring again after all the injuries he had and hopefully he'll come back to regular programming too and also in the X Division. The Lucha Guys get the win with a submission by Cuerno/fantasma and as Striker said on commentary, it was really weird to see the match end with a submission after all the high flying and risky moves we had. Best match on the card so far.
Marty The Moth vs Trevor Lee:[**1/4]
Another short but ok match with Famous B that found a way to sneak out of the match and signed Marty for a one night only. When i saw the change, i thought they would put on a better match and i'm kinda upset that they didn't because they could have done some solid things and they could have shown a lot more, but at least Trevor got the win that he needs, since one day he will be in the uppercard of Impact. Or at least i hope so.
Impact Tag Team Championship: LAX vs Killshot and Da Mack:[***3/4]
Another match that on paper was supposed to be good and my god it was even better than i expected. Both teams went all out with the Lucha Guys getting so close to pick up the win and getting the titles and showing amazing stuff, like the variation of the killshot stomp or the fireman carry into a pounce from Mack. Everytime i see Mack in the ring, wheather it's Lucha or PWG, i wonder how he failed to made it in WWE, because he is so good for a big man and he would have went over very easily with the WWE Crowd. But as expected, LAX got the win to keep their titles and one day i hope we get a rematch betwen both teams and Impact&AAA partnership might help with this (also the rumors of Killshot being on Impact's radar might help)
Brian Cage vs Eli Drake:[***]
After two good matches with Bobby Lashley on Impact, Cage also gets to face another former Impact World Champion and another solid match. Drake got some offense in the first half of the match but then Cage got the comeback and got to counter the Gravy Train and then he hit a neckbreaker that got him the win a little bit outtanowhere, since he won his matches on Impact with the DrillClaw. The finish was a bit anticlimatic but i liked the match and we can expect a rematch down the line in the next few months on Impact
I Quit Match: Eddie Edwards vs Jeremiah Crane:[****]
So this was the match that i was looking most for, because their feud has been amazing so far and their previous match was good, so i expected big things from them and the clearly delivered a big time match. It was brutal, violent, they both told a really great story, a story of a face getting revenge after what happened to him and almost happened to his wife. Eddie did anything to get the win and showed a sadistic side we've never seen from him while Callihan/Crane shined by being a badass dick heel who won't stop at nothing to do what he wants. I also loved the ending with Don Callis coming ringside and throwing the towel for eddie and save him while Crane tried again to hit him on the face with the baseball bat and then Moose came out to save Eddie again, because they are friends and because OVE screwed him on last weeks Impact during the match with Moose. Personally, i'd say that so far it's the best match i've seen on Impact and probably the best feud on Impact at the moment. Great stuff from both.
Pentagon Jr vs Fenix vs Austin Aries:[***1/2]
Before the start, we that Patron no showed up so the match is now a 3 way rather than a tag team match. actually Patron not being on the show gave us a much better that what should have been. It wasn't a stellar 3 way but it was very solid with all of them trying to get the win and also the two lucha guys had to work together to get rid of Aries (that double superkick was nuts and so the powerbomb from penta was). After Aries got knocked out, Pentagon got the win his Pentagon Driver and also picking some momentum for Redemption, since they are again facing each other but for the title this time, since Patron got fired by Impact because he didn't showed up at the event. I think the match will be even better than this one.
Overall: When they announced the show i was really hyped because i love inter promotion shows and that's the best things that can come out from two promotions working together. Then i saw the card and i thought it wouldn't be as good as i thought because some names from both Impact and LU weren't booked, but at the end of the day i think it was a solid, fun and enjoyable show. Nothing expectional but something different and easy to watch, even tho in the middle it lost some momentum but picked up and delivered with the Impact Tag titles match, the i quit match and the main event(thanks alberto). If you have the time to watch it, go for it, if you don't you should at least check the matches i mentioned before. Hopefully we will see a Impact vs LU II in the future. [7]

Grading Cam Newton's move to the Patriots - Little risk, huge potential and a new-look Patriots offense - ESPN
In the end, Cam Newton and the New England Patriots made too much sense for each other. In a league in which every other starting quarterback opportunity was full, the Patriots gave the former NFL MVP his only realistic chance of being a Week 1 starter on a competitive team. And while I don’t doubt that the Patriots still believe Jarrett Stidham is capable of being a starter at the NFL level, the chance to acquire the 2015 MVP when the alternatives were Stidham and Brian Hoyer was always going to interest coach Bill Belichick at the right price.
We might never know whether Belichick delayed the timing of the Newton signing to coincide with the news that the Patriots had lost a third-round pick from the latest in their series of league investigations, but by the time we get to September, it won’t matter. New England might have come away with the bargain of the offseason by agreeing to terms with Newton on a one-year deal, reportedly for the league minimum. Newton also can reportedly make up to $7.5 million in incentives, before he would presumably be able to hit the market again under far better circumstances in 2021.
Jump to the grade for the deal
The facts about Newton’s post-MVP career
To start, there’s very little risk here for the Patriots. They have only about $1.8 million in cap room, so depending on how the incentives are structured, they might need to create additional space to get Newton under contract. They can achieve that by extending guard Joe Thuney or cutting someone such as Rex Burkhead, Deatrich Wise Jr. or Jermaine Eluemunor. If Newton gets hurt or isn’t able to beat out Stidham, New England would presumably be out only about $1 million. When you consider that the organization paid Antonio Brown more than $9 million for one game last season, you can see just how little the Patriots have to lose by adding Newton.

Of course, that’s the $7 million question. If we knew that Newton was healthy, there’s little chance he would be available in the market for the league minimum. He hasn’t been healthy for a regular-season snap since the first half of 2018, and with the coronavirus rampaging through America this spring and summer, no team has been able to get Newton in for a workout or physical. It was going to be impossible for a team to commit to him as its starter on significant money, even if he’s a better option than someone like Nick Foles or Gardner Minshew.
The chances of a healthy — or at least much healthier — version of Newton showing up for the Patriots this season are much better than some would suggest. The idea that he hasn’t been a valuable quarterback since his 2015 MVP campaign is a product of selective memory. Let’s take a quick look back through recent history to explain why I’m optimistic.
Newton wasn’t very good in 2016, when an injury-riddled Panthers team fell from 15-1 to 6-10. His line was beaten up by injuries, and his top wide receiver was Kelvin Benjamin, who is now out of football. The Broncos laid waste to Newton in their Super Bowl rematch in Week 1, and he would eventually miss time with a concussion before returning to the field. He finished 25th in QBR that year at 47.1, falling just below then-Dolphins starter and recently successful reclamation project Ryan Tannehill at 48.6. (If you think Newton was done because of his injury history, consider that Tannehill tore an ACL at the end of that season, did it again the following offseason, missed time with a capsule injury in his shoulder in 2018, and still earned a massive contract after getting a chance to play in 2019.)
In 2017, while Newton didn’t return to his MVP form, he was still a useful quarterback. Despite losing Greg Olsen for most of the season and general manager Dave Gettleman choosing to make a disastrous investment in left tackle Matt Kalil, Newton finished the year 19th in QBR at 51.5. He was effective enough as a passer and runner to lead a Panthers team to an 11-5 record and a playoff berth.
In Week 4 of 2017, he delivered one of his most impressive performances of the season. The former Auburn star went 22-of-29 for 316 yards with three touchdowns and an interception while adding 44 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground in beating the Patriots at Foxboro, 33-30. Newton also won his prior game against the Pats in 2013; his combined line against Belichick has seen him post a passer rating of 128.2 while carrying the ball 15 times for 106 yards. I don’t think Belichick makes his decision based on two games, but the man knows how difficult a healthy Newton can be to stop.
In the hopes of keeping him healthy and building a more effective offense around the combination of his skills with those of running back Christian McCaffrey, the Panthers made changes during the 2018 offseason. In came Norv Turner, who surprisingly installed a more modern offense than the one Newton ran under Mike Shula. The Panthers used their top two picks on wideouts in DJ Moore and Curtis Samuel, although the latter was also injured. Olsen still missed time, and the offensive line was cobbled together as a result of injuries, but there was more around Newton than there had been over the prior three seasons.
Cam Newton threw just 89 passes last season before a foot injury caused him to miss the Panthers’ final 14 games. Carolina released him in March. Ronald Martinez/Getty Images
Newton played excellent football through the first half of 2018. With Carolina sitting pretty at 6-2 in the NFC South, he was 10th in the league in passer rating (100.8) and 12th in QBR (63.1). Often one of the deepest average passers in football, he was given shorter passes to throw and magically improved his completion percentage to 67.3. The former first overall pick was averaging nearly four touchdowns for every interception and producing nearly 280 yards from scrimmage per game. He was fourth on my midseason MVP ballot that year.
The Steelers beat the Panthers 52-21 in Week 10. Pretty quickly, it became clear that Newton’s right shoulder was a problem. He struggled to make throws with zip over the second half of the season, and while he battled through the injury before eventually sitting out in late December, the Panthers collapsed during the second half. He underwent shoulder surgery after the season.
It’s important to make this distinction, because if you weren’t paying attention to the Panthers last summer and into the preseason, you might have missed an important piece of information. By all accounts, Newton healed from that shoulder injury. One report from camp lauded the return of his deep ball, which had gone missing as a result of the shoulder injury the prior year. He looked to be back on schedule to return as the Panthers’ primary quarterback, and while I’m sure there would have been some growing pains, there was no suggestion that he was still being bothered by his shoulder when the next injury struck.
Newton suffered a Lisfranc injury to his left foot in a preseason loss to Belichick’s Patriots. He sat out the remainder of the preseason before returning for Week 1, but when I watched Newton play against the Rams, I didn’t see a quarterback who was struggling for velocity or arm strength. From how he was moving and how many passes he sailed over his receivers, it was clear that he wasn’t comfortable planting his foot. After the issue was even more obvious during a Thursday night loss to the Buccaneers the following week, the Panthers shut him down. When the injury didn’t heal with rest, the Panthers placed Newton on injured reserve, ending his season.
While a Lisfranc injury can be disastrous for receivers, it’s not a career-impacting injury for quarterbacks. Matt Schaub hit injured reserve with a Lisfranc injury in 2011 and returned to make the Pro Bowl the following season. Taysom Hill suffered a Lisfranc injury in college, and while it cost the BYU quarterback most of his senior year, he has been able to return and move just fine. Newton should be recovered from both the 2018 shoulder surgery and the 2019 foot surgery.
Is it possible that he has simply taken too many hits and has grown brittle? I suppose, but we have plenty of examples of quarterbacks who suffered multiple serious injuries and were still able to rebuild their career. Tannehill, who is nearly a year older than Newton, comes to mind. Randall Cunningham dealt with an ACL injury in an era in which it was far more career-threatening and came back at 35 to deliver an All-Pro season for the Vikings. Steve McNair battled through injury after injury and was a Pro Bowl-caliber passer at age 32 and 33. I don’t know whether Newton will get back to his old self, but it’s premature to write him off.

Dan Orlovsky breaks down how Cam Newton will be utilized with the Patriots, saying Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels will find new ways to use his skill set.
What could the Patriots’ offense look like?
A healthy Newton has to be considered the favorite to win the starting quarterback job in New England. Stidham was about to become the second player in league history taken after pick No. 100 to start for his team in Week 1 of his second season after not starting as a rookie. While the Patriots were optimistic enough about Stidham’s chances to avoid making a more significant move before now, the most we can say about the 2018 fourth-rounder is that he represented something totally unknown.
Before the Newton signing, there was already evidence that the Patriots were going to change their offense. Even the most optimistic Patriots fan couldn’t suggest that Stidham was going to be Tom Brady. He wasn’t going to have Brady’s accuracy, experience reading defenses or ability to avoid turnovers. That was never going to happen.
What the Patriots did this offseason, instead, was build around a more run-heavy attack. They put the franchise tag on Thuney, meaning that the Pats are set to spend nearly $28 million on guards this season, $6.5 million more than any other team. They got back David Andrews after their starting center missed the entire season with a pulmonary embolism, signed fullback Danny Vitale to replace the retiring James Develin, and then used a pair of third-round picks on tight ends Dalton Keene and Devin Asiasi, both of whom were regarded as plus blockers.

With Stidham, this offense would have likely looked something like a modern version of the attack the Patriots ran in 2001, when they had something closer to a 50/50 run/pass split. Brady’s job was to convert friendly third downs and protect the football. It worked: The Patriots were 11th in offensive DVOA and won a Super Bowl with a defense that was only 13th in DVOA. The 2020 Patriots should be much better than that on defense. That formula was going to be competitive with the Bills for a division title even before adding Newton.
If Newton does win the job, the Patriots probably will build something closer to the offense he was working under during his time with Turner in Carolina. With the Panthers trying to get the ball out of Newton’s hands quicker, the concerns about accuracy and efficiency that might have otherwise made him and the Patriots seem like a bad fit went away. He had just four interceptions and four fumbles over the first half of the 2018 campaign. That’s an outlier given the rest of his career, but it’s also the only time Carolina didn’t have a healthy Cam in an offense when they were expecting him to average 10 air yards per pass attempt.
You could also see the Patriots borrow concepts that have worked elsewhere. It wouldn’t be shocking if they stole some ideas out of the Greg Roman playbook for Lamar Jackson and used heavy doses of motion to manipulate teams and create opportunities for Newton as a runner. New England has always been aggressive with trying to stay ahead of the offensive curve and trying to build its offense around what’s undervalued. In 2007, the team traded for Randy Moss and Wes Welker and became a spread attack. Three years later, it drafted Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez and shifted into becoming a 12-personnel offense. When Chip Kelly took hold with the Eagles, the Patriots were one of the first teams to really emphasize pace and tempo, even before Kelly joined the league. The Ravens might have beaten the Patriots to the punch, but Belichick isn’t going to write off the league’s most effective offense as a gimmick.
What it all comes back to for me is this: When the Patriots haven’t been able to simply blow past teams with talent like they could in 2007, their core offensive concept has been versatility. Because they’ve had Gronkowski, Develin, Julian Edelman and a variety of versatile running backs, the Patriots have always been able to create a mismatch. They could go three- or four-wide and still had the blocking ability to run the football effectively. When they sent out 22 personnel and made it look like they were going to run the ball, they had the athletes to motion out or work off of play action and beat your base defense in the passing game. It’s how they won their last Super Bowl.
Last year, with Gronkowski retired, Develin injured and a replacement-level group of tight ends, the Pats didn’t have that ability to disguise their intentions with their personnel or the flexibility to shift from one concept to the other. They might have wanted to run the ball more effectively, but when Sony Michel was in the game, they ran the ball 67% of the time; only two players (who played 300 offensive snaps or more) were a better indicator of whether their team was going to run the ball, and one of them was Ravens fullback Patrick Ricard. When James White came in, they threw the ball 81.8% of the time; only three other players were a more obvious tell. New England suffered both running and throwing the football.
Newton, the 2015 NFL MVP, could now be the successor to Tom Brady, who signed with the Bucs this offseason. Logan Bowles via AP
The Patriots didn’t get Gronkowski back this offseason, but by replenishing at fullback and tight end, they were able to restore some semblance of versatility. By adding Newton to replace Brady, they’ve upgraded that versatility and added uncertainty at the one position where they didn’t have it during the Gronkowski era. They were fine without Brady as a run threat given everything else he could bring to the table, but if Newton’s healthy, he can give them a runner who can barrel through undersized boxes out of 10 or 11 personnel or one who can take advantage as a passer when teams load up the box to stop the run. In that sense, he is less a replacement for Brady and more a replacement for Gronkowski.
The grade: A-minus
Having said all that, while the Patriots aren’t incurring much financial risk by signing Newton, there is an opportunity cost that drops down this grade ever so slightly. Naturally, there’s a chance he fails his physical, which would render this whole thing a waste of time while simultaneously jabbing at Stidham’s confidence. If Newton stays healthy enough to soak up the majority of the preseason reps with the ones and then suffers a season-ending injury in Week 2, the Patriots will have wasted their time when Stidham could have desperately used those snaps.
Even if Newton does stay on the field and plays well enough to start, there’s a chance this doesn’t move the needle for the Patriots. If Newton’s the 24th-best quarterback in football, they will probably go 9-7, won’t be good enough to beat the Chiefs in the playoffs and likely move on from Newton after the season without having found their long-term quarterback. They enter next year with the same questions about Stidham and their future at the position, only with Stidham a year closer to free agency and the market much less likely to bear starting options.

Take a look back at the highs and lows of Cam Newton’s time with the Carolina Panthers.
In that dream scenario in which Newton stays healthy and the Patriots compete for a Super Bowl, there’s still some modest downside for the team. They were unable to convince Newton to sign a multiyear deal or get any sort of option on him for 2021 if he excels as the starter. It’s unclear whether the Pats will have the right to franchise him after the season if he does return to form. They’ll be able to afford a tag for him, given that the Pats are projected with more than $86 million in cap space, but if his camp negotiated a tag refusal as part of this deal, the Patriots won’t have a lot of leverage in re-signing him.
This is an obviously smart move for the Patriots, even if it doesn’t work out. Merely having Newton on their roster when he could have served as a high-upside backup for rivals like the Bills, Ravens, Steelers, Titans and Chiefs would have been worth what the Patriots are paying him. For the Patriots to add a starter with Newton’s upside this late in the process is almost a cliché. This has a strong case to become the best free-agent signing of the offseason.

2020 NFL offseason winners and losers
Let’s break down some of the winners and losers from this NFL offseason. Some of the stories in the short term were obvious — you don’t need me to tell you again who won the DeAndre Hopkins trade — but I’m going to try to take a look at the bigger picture to see how players, teams, coaches and others around the NFL were impacted by the moves and decisions made over the past few months.
Let’s start with a trio of young quarterbacks from the 2019 draft, all of whom are leaving the acquisition portion of the offseason as their teams’ starters. It begins with the player who might have the biggest shoes to fill of any player in NFL history:
Jump to a winner/loser: Clowney | Edwards-Helaire | Haskins Lock | Minshew | Murray | Newton Prescott | Rodgers | Stidham | Trubisky
Stidham is one of the most obvious victors of the past few months. We all knew the Patriots and Tom Brady would come to terms on a deal … until they didn’t. Then we all knew that the Pats were going to acquire Nick Foles or Andy Dalton or pull off some impossible run up the draft board for Tua Tagovailoa … and that didn’t happen either. Through the entire player acquisition window, the only competition the Patriots added for Stidham is veteran Brian Hoyer, who lost his last battle with Stidham for the backup spot in training camp in 2019. Barring a last-second move for Cam Newton, Stidham is going to be the Week 1 starter for the Patriots.
Merely having a chance to play is a huge opportunity for Stidham and one rarely afforded midround picks who aren’t forced into action by injury. Imagine if one of the other teams looking for quarterbacks in that draft range last year took Stidham instead? The Panthers paid Teddy Bridgewater in lieu of handing things over to Will Grier (pick No. 100). Ryan Finley (104) is buried behind first overall pick Joe Burrow in Cincinnati, while Easton Stick (166) is third behind Tyrod Taylor and sixth overall pick Justin Herbert in L.A. One other late-round selection will be starting in 2020 — see the next winner — but there are midround picks who don’t really get a chance to play meaningful football across their rookie deals. Stidham will get his.

The Patriots didn’t exactly add any star weapons for their new starter, but they did address their threadbare tight end room by using third-round picks on Devin Asiasi and Dalton Keene. Retaining guard Joe Thuney on a franchise tag and getting back center David Andrews from a pulmonary embolism means the Patriots should be well-positioned to protect Stidham. It’s obviously way too early to say anything about how he will perform, but he has gone from being an afterthought to taking the reins for Bill Belichick & Co.
Likewise, the Jaguars cleared out a path for their 2019 sixth-round pick, as they traded away free-agent addition Nick Foles after paying him more than $30 million for four starts. Jacksonville then sat out the various free-agent quarterback options and didn’t use either of its first-round picks on a signal-caller. The Jags even added Tyler Eifert at tight end and used a second-round pick on wideout Laviska Shenault Jr., though their desperate attempts to get anybody to take running back Leonard Fournette off their hands found no takers.
Again, even having a chance to take meaningful reps as a sixth-round pick is rare. The last sixth-rounder to throw at least 400 passes over his first two seasons was Tom Brady, who threw three as a rookie in 2000 and 413 while leading the Pats to a Super Bowl in 2001. Minshew is already way ahead of the game in terms of opportunity; now, with just Joshua Dobbs and sixth-round pick Jake Luton backing him up, Minshew should get a full season to prove he’s an NFL quarterback.
Let’s hit a 2019 quarterback trifecta! Lock flashed promise while going 4-1 across his five starts at the end of the season, though it’s worth noting that those four wins came against the teams ranked 20th (Chargers), 26th (Texans), 27th (Lions), and 30th (Raiders) in pass defense DVOA. At the very least, he did enough for the Broncos to feel confident about opening the 2020 season with him as their starter.
While Denver held out some hope for luring Tom Brady, it didn’t make a move for any of the other quarterbacks when Brady decided to stay east. The Broncos didn’t even bring in a significant backup — the depth chart behind Lock consists of Jeff Driskel, Brett Rypien and Riley Neal. This is Lock’s team.
Drew Lock had seven touchdown passes and three interceptions while playing the final five games for Denver. Tim Warner/Getty Images
On top of that vote of confidence from general manager John Elway, no quarterback gained more weapons this offseason than the Missouri product. Lock already had a handful of exciting pieces in running back Phillip Lindsay, wide receiver Courtland Sutton and tight end Noah Fant. I can’t pretend I’m the biggest Melvin Gordon fan, and it’s not a great contract for the Broncos, but the running back can be valuable when he’s healthy and protecting the football. Elway then used his first two selections in the draft on wideouts Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler.
Denver didn’t address its problematic left tackle spot, but it did make a major addition on the interior by signing lineman Graham Glasgow to a $44 million deal. The Broncos finished up by adding experienced offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, who has gotten Sam Bradford, Case Keenum and Daniel Jones to exceed expectations over the past few seasons. It’s fair to be skeptical of Lock after just five starts, but outside of a left tackle, the 23-year-old has everything he could have asked for from his organization this offseason.
On the other hand, there’s a member of that 2019 quarterback class who might feel left out among all the additions. Washington did avoid the lure of using the second overall pick on a quarterback, but it did little to help its starting quarterback.
Haskins’ receiving corps beyond Terry McLaurin was lacking last season, and the most notable free agents his team imported to help out its young starter were Cody Latimer and Richard Rodgers. Washington used midround picks on hybrid back Antonio Gibson and wideout Antonio Gandy-Golden, but it also traded away star left tackle Trent Williams without adding a meaningful replacement.
Loser: Cam Newton, QB, free agent
Things haven’t worked out for the former league MVP, who might have hoped to play out the final year of his deal with the Panthers while earning $19.1 million. Newton was instead cut, and the coronavirus pandemic has prevented him from finding a new team. He hasn’t been able to conduct a public workout, though he has posted videos on Instagram that show him going through drills. In the meantime, the starting jobs and most of the prime backup jobs have been filled.
There are still at least seven teams that should be looking for a backup quarterback, including the aforementioned Broncos and Jaguars, who don’t seem to want to challenge their young starters. The Cardinals, Rams and Seahawks all need a veteran backup, but there’s little chance of Newton playing meaningful snaps for those teams in 2020.

The two most logical landing spots left for Newton are in the AFC. Let’s start with the Titans, who gave Ryan Tannehill $91 million in practical guarantees over the next three years. Tannehill’s hold on the starting job isn’t going anywhere at that price tag, but the former Dolphins starter missed 24 games over his final four years in Miami. There’s a reasonable chance he misses time this year, and the Titans currently have seventh-round picks Cole McDonald and Logan Woodside behind their starter.
Tannehill was revelatory as a play-action passer last season, which fits what Newton does best. From 2017 through the first half of 2018, Newton posted a passer rating of 114.7 on play-action attempts, the seventh-best rate in the league. The Titans are built around Derrick Henry and their power-running attack, and it’s not difficult to imagine how Newton could play a role in that attack. A few starts for the Titans could help rebuild his value before the 2021 offseason.
The ideal job for Newton would be in Pittsburgh. The Steelers should get Ben Roethlisberger back after he missed 14 games in 2019 with an elbow injury, but the longtime starter is 38 and has missed 38 games over his 16-year career. Mason Rudolph and Devlin Hodges were replacement-level quarterbacks last season, and Newton could viably make his case to serve as Roethlisberger’s long-term replacement in Pittsburgh if he plays well in a couple of spot starts.
While the Bears started this offseason suggesting that Trubisky would be their Week 1 starter in 2020, their actions suggest that his future is tenuous. Chicago traded for Nick Foles, and in restructuring the former Super Bowl MVP’s deal, it guaranteed Foles $21 million over the next three seasons. Then the team declined Trubisky’s fifth-year option, which would have guaranteed a $24.8 million salary in 2021 for injury.
Failing to earn a fifth-year option pickup has typically been a bad sign. Eight other first-round quarterbacks have had their fifth-year option declined. None of them made it to a fifth year with the team that drafted them. Six of them — Jake Locker, EJ Manuel, Christian Ponder, Brandon Weeden, Johnny Manziel and Paxton Lynch — didn’t take an NFL snap anywhere in Year 5. Teddy Bridgewater spent his fifth year sitting behind Drew Brees, while the only one of the bunch who saw meaningful action was Blaine Gabbert in San Francisco.
Trubisky will instead have to look toward a teammate for hope. The Bears declined Kyle Fuller’s fifth-year option after injuries and inconsistent play, but after a breakout season, they used the transition tag to keep him around before matching a four-year, $56 million offer sheet. Fuller ended up making much more than he would have if the Bears had simply picked up that option in the first place. They have spent years trying to surround Trubisky with talent to confirm their belief that he was a franchise quarterback in the making. Now he has to overcome their skepticism and the odds.
There was little trade interest in Howard before he was dealt to the Eagles last offseason, and after seeing his rushing yards and yards-per-game figures decline in each of the past three seasons, I figured that the league would see him as a relatively replaceable zone runner. Alfred Morris, a similarly productive rookie, wasn’t able to ever get a significant deal.
Howard instead got a two-year, $10 million pact from the Dolphins with $4.8 million guaranteed in Year 1. Miami also added veterans Ereck Flowers and Ted Karras in free agency before using first- and second-round picks on offensive linemen. The Dolphins traded for Matt Breida, but they didn’t use a significant pick on a running back, and Breida has been a boom-or-bust player with injury issues during his time with the 49ers.
Howard landing meaningful guaranteed money, a starting job and a team that invested heavily in offensive linemen has to be considered a victory.
Jordan Howard averaged 4.4 yards per carry but only rushed 119 times for the Eagles last season. Eric Hartline/USA TODAY Sports
In a similar way to Newton’s, Clowney’s market has been depressed by medical concerns and an inability to evaluate those issues under the current climate. For all we hear about how NFL teams don’t focus on sacks, Clowney’s three-sack total from 2019 hasn’t helped his case. The former first overall pick is unquestionably talented, but the massive deal he might have received under typical circumstances after a more productive season hasn’t arrived.
Naturally, it seems like the logical thing for Clowney to do is sign a one-year deal with a contender and try to rebuild his value in the hopes of signing a big deal next year. Under normal circumstances, that idea makes sense. This isn’t a normal season, though, and there’s a chance that Clowney — and many other veterans — might not be able to sign big contracts next offseason.
As Jason Fitzgerald of Over the Cap wrote last week, the uncertainty around 2020 stadium and ticket revenue could lead to a meaningful drop in league income, which would result in a shrunken salary cap. Teams have seen the cap rise by an average of just under 6% over the past decade, up from $120 million in 2011 to $198.2 million in 2020. With players improving their share of revenue in the new CBA, the cap was expected to rise well north of $200 million in 2021. Now, Fitzgerald projects, the cap could fall somewhere between $130 million to $175 million in 2021, depending on how revenues are affected by the pandemic.
Obviously, it’s too early to project what the situation will be like next year, and the league could come to an agreement with its players to push future revenues forward to try to account for a reduced cap figure in 2021, but we could be looking at a different financial landscape next spring. Teams that were planning for a $210 million cap would be forced to cut veterans to get compliant, flooding the market with talented players. Many free agents would likely look for one-year deals in advance of a massive projected cap increase in 2022 and 2023, when local revenue would return to form and the league would be flush with television revenue from new deals. Clowney might end up stuck signing back-to-back one-year deals as a result.
Losers: Teams with lots of guaranteed money tied up in 2021
While we’re again months and months away from having any idea about what the cap will look like next year, there are teams that have to be sweating the possibility of a reduced cap. Take the Eagles, who already have $263.3 million on the books for 2021, much of it tied up in players who are core pieces of the roster. Getting down to $210 million would require a couple of restructures and cuts of veterans like DeSean Jackson, Alshon Jeffery and Marquise Goodwin. Moving to $175 million would require another $35 million in savings.
Barnwell and friends discuss sports — usually. • Podcast: Fantasy rookie draft » • Archive: Every podcast from Barnwell »
The Eagles would find a reduced cap most difficult, but teams like the Saints, Falcons and Steelers would also be in compromised positions. Again, the league and players could come to terms on a deal that could restore some of the missing revenue, and the NFL would get a bump from a possible 17-game season in 2021, but the alternative looms as a dangerous scenario for several of the league’s highest-spending teams.
I hit the most crucial parts of the DeAndre Hopkins trade when it happened in March, but it’s quietly a huge victory for Johnson. With the Cardinals slapping the transition tag on Kenyan Drake, Arizona was clearly moving forward with Drake as its starting running back. It wouldn’t have been surprising to see Chase Edmonds as the No. 2 behind him. Johnson was likely in line to get cut, where veterans like Devonta Freeman, Carlos Hyde and LeSean McCoy haven’t found a market.
Instead, the Texans traded for Johnson as part of the Hopkins deal, suggesting that Bill O’Brien sees him as a meaningful asset. With Houston treating Duke Johnson like a third-down back last season, David Johnson has a clear path to lead-back duties in an offense that ranked 11th in rush offense DVOA a year ago. There’s even a chance that the Texans pay Johnson the $9 million he’s due in 2021, which seemed out of the question when the offseason began.
While I wrote about why the Jordan Love decision might not be as bad as it seems for the Packers, it’s fair to say that Rodgers’ position can’t feel as good as it did a few months ago.
Green Bay seemed to set a deadline on the Rodgers era, and the only shopping it did to help Rodgers this offseason was to swap out tight end Jimmy Graham for wide receiver Devin Funchess. I still think the Packers could go after a veteran wideout like Kenny Stills, but you can understand why Rodgers would be cranky right about now.
One year ago, the Rams were coming off a trip to the Super Bowl. Every team wanted to hire a coach who vaguely resembled Sean McVay. Their young core seemed set to compete for another title. After a frustrating 2019 campaign left the Rams struggling for answers on offense and out of the playoffs for the first time since McVay arrived in town, it was clear that Los Angeles needed to make changes during the offseason.
I’m not sure those changes really helped, as this offseason felt like a repudiation of the Rams’ philosophy. They lost legendary defensive coordinator Wade Phillips and longtime special-teams coordinator John Fassel. Just two years after handing out huge contracts to Brandin Cooks and Todd Gurley, they punted on both of those deals, cutting their former MVP candidate at running back while trading the wide receiver to the Texans. They were even publicly called out for not paying Gurley and Clay Matthews bonus money, which should hurt the organization when it tries to sign free agents in the future.

Sean McVay says the Rams are fully focused on the Cowboys in Week 1 after the NFL schedule release.
Furthermore, the Rams didn’t really resolve any of their problems this offseason. After trading two first-round picks to acquire Jalen Ramsey, they still haven’t signed their star cornerback to an extension. They swapped out Dante Fowler Jr. for edge rusher Leonard Floyd and used their top two picks to replace Cooks and Gurley, but they didn’t do anything to replace star inside linebacker Cory Littleton.
Crucially, L.A. almost entirely ignored an offensive line that crumbled in 2019, re-signing aging left tackle Andrew Whitworth while choosing to hope for a healthier 2020. With Jared Goff posting the league’s worst passer rating under pressure in 2019, McVay will need to conjure up a solution to get his prize pupil back on track this season.
Well, duh. The Buccaneers have Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski now. Even beyond those two additions, though, the offseason has gone extremely well for the Bucs. They needed to retain the core of their wildly underrated defensive line and managed to do so by franchising Shaq Barrett and re-signing both Jason Pierre-Paul and Ndamukong Suh. Their biggest hole heading into the draft was at right tackle, and they had to move up only one spot to get Tristan Wirfs.
This offseason was something out of a dream for Tampa Bay, which has a higher win projection in Vegas than the Patriots for 2020.
A particularly big winner in this scenario is Tampa Bay’s general manager. Licht has been the general manager for six years, and the Bucs have gone 34-62 during his time in charge. That’s the third-worst mark in football. The team has cycled through three coaches over that six-year span, and while Licht nailed first-round picks on wide receiver Mike Evans and defensive tackle Vita Vea, he’s also the one who drafted Jameis Winston and stuck with the embattled quarterback over the past five years. Licht also whiffed on most of his second-round selections, most notably kicker Roberto Aguayo, who was the low point of an almost comical inability from the organization to identify a competent kicker.

Licht is by all accounts a nice guy, and he has hit on a number of his midround selections too. Teams are generally too aggressive in getting rid of their top decision-makers, and I’m not saying Licht should have been fired. Typically, though, general managers with that sort of track record don’t get to enter a seventh offseason, and when Licht did, he managed to convince Brady and Gronkowski to come to town. Nobody would have batted an eye if the Bucs let go of Licht last offseason; now, if the Bucs live up to expectations, he might very well win Executive of the Year.
Loser: Tight end streamers against the Arizona Cardinals
If you played daily fantasy football or chose to stream your tight ends on a week-to-week basis in standard fantasy football, you knew about the Cardinals. Last year, Arizona allowed 309 points to opposing tight ends in PPR leagues, an average of 19.3 points per game. No other team was above 244, and the league average was 195 points, or just under 12.2 points per contest. It’s the second-worst season any team has posted against tight ends over the past 20 years, trailing only the 2013 Cardinals. Everybody from T.J. Hockenson to Ross Dwelley had their best games of the season against Arizona.
Vance Joseph-led defenses don’t always know what to do with tight ends — the Broncos ranked 26th against tight ends during his two years as Denver’s coach — but the Cardinals did something to address the problem this offseason by drafting Isaiah Simmons with the No. 8 overall pick. They’ve suggested that the talented Clemson defender will begin his NFL career at linebacker, where he’s likely to see plenty of action against tight ends in coverage. Arizona has managed to get the least out of athletic, hybrid defenders like Deone Bucannon and Haason Reddick in years past, but Simmons could very well ruin one of the easiest exploits in fantasy football.
Did any first-round pick end up in a more advantageous landing spot? Andy Reid told general manager Brett Veach that he thought Edwards-Helaire was better than Brian Westbrook before the Chiefs drafted the LSU back with the final pick of the first round. The only running back Reid had drafted before the third round across his career as a head coach and personnel executive before Edwards-Helaire was LeSean McCoy, who was the 53rd pick in the 2009 draft.
While the Chiefs have suggested that Edwards-Helaire will split time with incumbent Damien Williams, the future belongs to the rookie. Williams is a free agent after the season and wasn’t healthy for most of 2019 with hamstring issues. The Chiefs also said the same thing about Kareem Hunt and Spencer Ware in 2017, and when Ware went down with a knee injury in the preseason, Hunt was handed the job and finished his rookie year with 1,782 yards from scrimmage. Edwards-Helaire should turn into one of the most productive backs in football; the only real question is when.
Losers: Rookie coaches (and players)
It should go without saying that this is incredibly low on the list of upheavals caused by the pandemic, but while the NFL has managed to keep free agency and the draft on schedule, there’s no realistic way for football teams to practice. With team facilities closed, organized team activities (OTAs) have been postponed and will likely be canceled. Rookie minicamps are being conducted remotely. It’s unclear whether teams will be able to undergo a full training camp.
As a result, newcomers seem likely to suffer. Some rookie players already have a difficult time catching up with the speed of the league and the complexity of professional playbooks; now they’ll have to try to catch up on the finer points over Zoom. Likewise, rookie coaches who are attempting to install a new scheme and work with new players already were going to have their practice time reduced over the summer by the new CBA. They’re almost surely going to miss out on any pre-training-camp practice time.

Naturally, the teams with new head coaches and coordinators — the Browns, Giants, Panthers and Washington — are the ones that are most likely to suffer from this lack of teaching time. Teams with stability could benefit. In an indirect way, though they could not have possibly predicted what was going to happen, teams such as the Steelers and Texans who dealt away much of their draft capital could end up feeling better about their decisions, given that rookies may struggle to make an impact in 2020.
Winners: Veterans negotiating contracts with the Houston Texans
You probably knew that the Texans weren’t going to get out of a winners and losers column unscathed. I’ll leave the Hopkins deal aside, but it’s worth noting just how dramatically the contracts the Texans handed out differ from those of their peers. Slot corner Bradley Roby signed a three-year, $31.5 million deal when guys like Chris Harris Jr. and Brian Poole were forced to sign smaller contracts and Logan Ryan remains a free agent. Wideout Randall Cobb inked a three-year, $27 million deal when the wideout market totally cratered.
The biggest deal, though, belongs to Laremy Tunsil. The Texans didn’t sign the offensive tackle to an extension after trading two first-round picks and a second-rounder to the Dolphins last August. Tunsil said that even he would have made that trade from the Dolphins’ perspective, and he continued to dabble in negotiations when he chose to represent himself in extension talks with O’Brien.
Tunsil did well. He ended up signing a three-year, $66 million extension, meaning he’ll make a total of $76.9 million over the next four years. The deal shattered the tackle market, where the largest average annual salary belonged to Lane Johnson at $18 million per season, and Johnson’s deal is really a paper extension for cap purposes with base salaries that will void next offseason. The largest real deal for a tackle is Trent Brown’s four-year, $66.8 million pact from last offseason. Brown averaged less than $17 million per season on his deal. Tunsil averaged $22 million on his extension and $19.3 million over the next four years. Nobody in the league got a bigger contract this offseason after adjusting for positional expectations. Tunsil even gets to hit free agency again before turning 30. Not bad for a part-time agent!
I mentioned three other 2019 quarterbacks earlier, but I’ll add a fourth to the list with the first overall pick from last year’s draft. It isn’t complicated, of course: Murray was given the gift of DeAndre Hopkins, who will add to a receiving corps that already featured Christian Kirk and Larry Fitzgerald. The Arizona offense was also better after adding Kenyan Drake last season, and Drake was retained on a transition tag. Kliff Kingsbury’s offense will not lack for weapons.
I’m still a little worried about the offensive line, but the Cardinals did re-sign left tackle D.J. Humphries after his best season and added Josh Jones to compete with Marcus Gilbert on the right side. Last year’s MVP was a second-year quarterback who took a leap forward after his team spent the offseason surrounding him with the right weapons. It’s asking a lot of Murray to follow in the footsteps of Lamar Jackson, of course, but Murray should have the pieces he needs to take a leap forward in 2020.
I’ll finish up with one of the most interesting unresolved sagas of the offseason. No, Prescott doesn’t have his deal yet, though the star quarterback will have long-term financial security once he signs the $31.5 million franchise tag. The Cowboys continue to say they intend to keep Prescott around on a long-term deal, but they did add Andy Dalton and suggested last week that Prescott “has to accept what [the Cowboys] want to pay him.”

Domonique Foxworth makes a case for why the Cowboys should sign Dak Prescott to a long-term contract.
Of course, Prescott doesn’t really have to accept that. The Cowboys can franchise him again in 2021 for $37.8 million, but with a third franchise tag costing them $54.3 million, they realistically have to get Prescott signed before the end of the 2021 season. And if the Cowboys think Prescott’s demands are unreasonable now, they’re not going to get cheaper, given that the likes of Deshaun Watson and Patrick Mahomes are going to raise the market by signing extensions of their own.
I’ve got a much bigger piece on the Prescott situation in the works, so I’m not going to get into the will they/should they questions here. What I will say, though, is that Prescott is in the catbird seat. The Cowboys let go of Jason Garrett, but they retained offensive coordinator Kellen Moore and star wide receiver Amari Cooper before adding another valuable weapon in rookie wideout CeeDee Lamb. Prescott lost veteran center Travis Frederick to retirement, but he’s well-positioned to deliver a big season for an offense that finished second in DVOA a year ago. If Prescott does that, well, the Cowboys might need to accept what Dak wants to be paid.
