Hullo! I’ve been watching a bunch of your Timelapses and I was wondering how do you always come up with the colours for your pieces? They’re always so cohesive and pleasing to look at (I almost exclusively work in greyscale so if I’m using colour it’s always a lucky guess and it never looks quite right)

Hey there!

I have to be honest that most of the time I don't actually know what I'm doing and that I have no idea how most of my pieces are gonna turn out. My work process is usually based on "Fuck around and find out", haha. I'm happy to know that it apparently doesn't come across that way, though.

A lot of it comes very naturally to me simply because I've been drawing non-stop for so long, but I can give you some small tips that really help me:

1. Have as many references as possible!

Here's what my reference sheet looked like for the Jayvik piece:

It helped me a lot to understand the overall color scheme I wanted to convey. Lots of very cold tones, pinks and very light blues and greens. These colours sorround Jayce and Viktor throughout all of season 2 and I wanted to keep them, especially since in my piece they are lying in the glowing hexcore.

Don't shy away from using references, get as many as you possibly can! Look at other poeple's art too and try to understand how they work with colours.

2. Work with complementary colours!

Since I paint a lot of romantic illustrations I want them to look pleasing and comforting, which I can accomplish by using complementary colours! You see this a lot with couples that are blue and red coded, for example. And I wanted to do the same thing in the Jayvik piece! For that I used the highlights in their hair!

Viktor's highlights are a soft pink hue.

While Jayce's are a soft blue hue.

The colour wheel works perfect for figuring out if two colors compliment each other because they are literally right across from one another!

3. It doesn't have to be true to life.

Pretty self-explanatory, but I thought I'd add it in here anyways. It's important to understand how colour and light works, but you don't always have to follow the rules. Does the rim light look cool but it makes zero sense? Who cares! Keep the cool rim light! Just have fun and fuck around.

4. A little trick to make your life easier!

I'm not excatly the best at colour theory, I still struggle with it quite a bit, but here's a little trick I like to use from time to time:

If you want all your colours to look coherent, take one specific color as your flat colour. Choose a hue that you would like your piece to have. Like this:

Now you choose whatever colours your characters have and paint them in. For example, here are the skin colours I chose for Jayce and Viktor:

Looks off, right? These colours don't fit the overall piece at all. So what do we do?

Turn down the opacity! It's that easy, wahoo!

I went from 100 Opacity to 72 for this specific illustration. And look at that!

It's so much nicer already! Now you know what colours to use as your actual flats! Just repeat this with every other part of your illustration and you'll have a great starting point. :)

I really hope this was helpful! I'm not an actual teacher and I don't have a proper illustration degree, so some things might not be completely accurate, but I thought I'd try my hand at this anyways!

I dunno how helpful this'll be cuz I'm at the point where mapping things out in my head is second nature, so 'showing my work' is kinda hard lol,

but here are a few examples of my sketch process:

I start by blocking out the planes of the face and then usually just jump right into adding details (the liquify tool is your friend)

There isn't really an in-between phase, but I do have a lot of reference on hand, both of the character I'm drawing and of general face anatomy

Specifically, I find referencing the asaro head is really helpful for understanding the 3d planes of the face without getting bogged down in the little details. I personally have this one bookmarked bc it's also useful for lighting:

Killer is the only one Nightmare can't track down easily, since he can feel the others by emotion but can't usually sense Killer's unless he's in stage 1.

This is a small part of why he and Color got off on the wrong foot, because the first time Color and Killer met was when he was helping Dream fight them and he managed to pull Killer away from the main fight to try and reason with him. While they were doing that, Nightmare decided to retreat but couldn't see Killer around and couldn't find him using emotions, so he had to leave without him. (He did return later to scour the place and found Killer waiting for him, since he'd refused Color's offer to go with them.)

This became a running theme, where sometimes after a battle Killer would be gone without a trace because he was off fighting/talking with Color and Nightmare would have to come back for him later. It's also what makes Nightmare a little uneasy in present day about Killer running off to hang out with Color sometimes, because if Color succeeds in convincing Killer not to return, Nightmare has no way of tracking him down anymore. He just has to trust that Killer will return at some point, and wait.

Starter Guide On Where To Find The Calender Council In Game

Alright, so here i've put together a little intro guide on where to find information/interact with The Calender Council in Fallen London proper, since most of their lore and experience is scattered throughout the game

This is not a summary of these characters, rather, where people can go to experience the content and read things for themselves. I'm also not gonna mention every single little mention, this is just a starter guide.

There will be mild spoilers here, by the nature of knowing where these characters are involved

Obliatory reference to [Fate] The Calender Code, this ES has some brief overview to all CC members, and introduces the concept of most CC members being tied to a quirk.

January

January is primarily found in the Railway Questline.

In order to have her on the board and experience her inclusion, you must first recruit September, supported the liberationist tracklayers twice, and have 7 Revolutionary Favours

She can be a City Leader and has extra text in the City in Silver

(I recommend recruiting her as early on as possible to experience full text, especially before the initial Creditor plotline)

She is connected to the Discordance

February

Rival during the Cave of The Nadir Expedition

Cameos briefly in nemesis if you choose to try and reach out to revolutionary connections

[Fate] Scene in the Revolutionary option during Sackmas

The Manager appears in a later part of The Railway, with a significant extra contribution for Heart's Desire players

June

Very little is known about June.

She is referenced briefly in the Red Feathers Pin renown raising, "Bury the Council's Secrets"

Out of universe text confirms her as the archictect of the dawn machine

[Fate] July is the featured character in the "Lost In Reflections" ES

[Fate] She can be a companion and a Railway Board member with minimal extra dialogue, purchased from Mr Chime's lost and found

August

August of the Calendar Council is the Jovial Contrarian. He appears substaintially throughout the game.

September

September can be met in Balmoral at the Kirk during the Railway Storyline. He has a storyline there, and can become a railway board member.

[Fate] September can become a companion at the Feast of The Rose, and is a marriage candidate.

There's extra text at the Burrow station but we all know my bone to pick with the Burrow

October

You meet October in the Heart's Desire Ambition

'The Peace of October' is an option for calvary in The Parabolan War

[Fate] The Shallows has a deep insight into October's Actions

[Fate] October briefly cameos in The Bloody Wallpaper

The results of October's actions are seen in Nemesis Ambition, but she is not directly mentioned

November

Do you have canvas size recommendations? I have issues with the things I draw getting wider when I upload on here.

interesting question!! i don't know if i've run into this at all recently, but i can still answer to the best of my ability:

i start my canvas at 3000 x 3000px (unless i'm making a print), and then usually resize to no bigger than a 1800 x 1800px jpg for uploading online.

with small/unserious doodles like the above, or wip screenshots, i usually aim for no smaller than 1000px, so as not to lose too much quality!
