Let Them Talk
Corpse Husband x Reader (Female) ft. Sykkuno
Warnings: Swearing, Jealousy
Genre: Fluff, a bit of Angst
Summary: We can all agree Among Us is a fun game on its own but what makes it ten times better is playing it with the right company. Y/N could agree 100% Being a streamer herself, she loves playing with the streamer gang that includes her boyfriend and best friend. But, what happens when her boyfriend starts doubting her feelings for him due to her close relationship with her best friend.
Requested by @cheetoscat . Thank you so much for your request! Sorry it took so long to write, I hope the final product is worth the wait. Enjoy! Love, Vy ❤
Y/AU/N - Your Among Us Name
I settle in my gaming chair, adjusting my webcam one last time before joining the Among Us lobby with my friends.
“Hi everyone!“ I say into the mic, a smile plastering itself on my face. Discord is a magical thing, man. It’s so easy to forget that the people you are talking to aren’t around you or within arm’s reach. You could be separated by miles and miles of land or - in our case - oceans as well. Distance becomes negligible when you hear your friends’ voices, their laughter; when you have a good time together despite being each behind a screen, often times alone.
Well, I’m one of those lucky ones that isn’t alone. No one knows that, though. Everyone thinks I’m a single, self-employed girl that’s straight out of college. And they are 90% right. Only thing is - I’m not single. That would be a shocker in and of itself, but revealing who’s changed my relationship status would be a bomb with a whole new intensity.
Speaking of my significant other who shall remain unnamed - just kidding, it’s Corpse - his form materializes in the doorway of my recording room. I give him a hand signal the camera isn’t able to capture, alerting him of the fact that my mic is on. He replies by blowing me a kiss and walking off down the hall to his recording room where he’ll be stationed for the next three or so hours.
I owe this relationship to my best friend Sykkuno. I’m a pretty new and not very well known on the platform, however, thanks to him I haven’t only obtained a boyfriend, but a following of a little over million subscribers as well.
It all started with an invitation to fill a spot in the Among Us lobby him and his friends had created. It took him quite a bit to convince me to join, but I eventually caved and agreed. Suddenly, there I was. In a Discord call, in an Among Us lobby with some of the most well-known names on this platform. I’m talking YouTube legends. I was that puppy playing with the big dogs. The newbie tagging along with the big leagues. Or at least that’s how I felt until we all started vibing - talking and teasing each other as though we’ve known each other for years and not minutes.
When I joined the call, Corpse wasn’t present. After everyone else introduced themselves, Sykkuno informed me that we were waiting for Corpse to return. The name sounded really cool to me and I was genuinely very excited to meet this Corpse guy.
And then, out of the blue - no prep, no warning...
“Did you get someone to fill the spot? Oh- Hello, Y/AU/N.“
…he started talking and he had me star-struck. Apparently, he also had me a blabbering mess cause I remember blurting out: “Whoa, who’s this guy speaking in bold and underlined at the same time?”
The entire lobby, including Corpse, laughed. Sean, or Jack like they called him most often, answered my question, “That is the voice of God, Y/N. Its source is named Corpse, though.”
Heat spread from the bottom of my neck to the tips of my ears. I was mortified by my own stupidity. I was well aware they couldn’t see me and I was incredibly thankful for that, but I simply could not get myself to open my eyes. “I’m so sorry.” I said through nervous laughter.
“No, no, I like that description. Bold and underlined at the same time, huh?“ His voice sounded even more pleasant when it had that teasing, mischievous note to it. That thought popping up in my head only made things worse for my self-esteem and only made me more embarrassed, causing me to hide my face in my hands. “You sure it’s not in Italics as well?“
His question got a weak laugh out of me. “Nope, definitely not. Nothing Italic about it.“
Yes, I don’t even know how some terrible jokes about MS Word fonts got me as far as a romantic relationship, but they did! We’ve been living together for quite some time now, dating for even longer - hiding it just as long. It’s not that we have been actively trying to hide it or something, we just wanted to see how long it would take someone to become sus of us. When we realized no one would notice, we decided that if any rumors about us started, or even fans shipping us, we’d come clean. That hasn’t happened either, so we haven’t had the proper chance to address our relationship and neither of us minds.
At this point, I’m honestly afraid of revealing it to the gaming squad. Sykkuno especially. He’s my best friend, after all. I can see him being hurt by the fact that I kept a secret so big even from him. The last thing I wanna do is hurt my best friend but it’s already too late for that, it’s inevitable.
“Y/N have you looked at Twitter today?“ Rae, another streamer I’ve become close with over the months, says urgently.
Overlooking the tension in her words, I answer: “Nope, haven’t had the time. Why? What’s up?“
Before Rae can say anything else, Sykkuno joins the conversation, his voice somehow even more urgent than Rae’s. “It’s nothing, Y/N. If you see it, just don’t let it bother you, ok?”
Hearing such a tone from Rae isn’t unusual, but hearing it from Sykkuno is completely different and a lot more worrisome. “Well if it has the potential of bothering me it can’t be nothing. What’s going on?”
Just then, my phone dings with two notifications. I check to see they are messages from Rae.
“I sent you screenshots. Sorry, Sykkuno. She has to know in order to address it and defuse it as well. I know better than anyone how fast these rumors can spread, especially if no one reacts to them.“ She says, her tone barely apologetic at all.
I open the screenshots she has sent me and I find myself frozen in shock. Some old pictures of Sykkuno and I have been posted on Twitter by some random user. These pictures have started an entire thread of suspicions surrounding our relationship.
The pictures in question are from a New Year’s Eve party a mutual friend of ours held two years ago. Sure, in the pictures we are a lot closer than what would be considered a platonic proximity. And yes one of the pictures is of me kissing his cheek. Yes we were both a bit tipsy. I acknowledge all those things and yet none of them are concrete reasons for these rumors to have started piling.
“This is silly.“ I finally say after maybe five minutes of silence on my end. ”This is absolutely ridiculous! And why are people so serious about it as well? Actual, important matters get discussed more nonchalantly than the potential relationship between two online personalities! What is this world we live in?“ I know I shouldn’t let these rumors get to me like this, especially not on camera. Still, I can’t help it. I feel it’s so unfair to Corpse. He has to put up with this as well and it’s by no means easy for him. I’ve been shipped with people from our group in the past and he always took those rumors to heart despite acting like he didn’t care. Neither of us should get worked up, but him getting upset about them creates a domino effect with my emotions - causing me to be hit just as hard as him, in some cases harder.
Rumors of the past aside, this one is the worst by far. Mostly cause even Corpse himself suspected something between Sykkuno and I at the very beginning, when we were still acquaintances, barely crossing into the realm of friends.
I pull up Twitter to look for the whole thread, barely sparing my stream chat a glance in the process. It seems pretty split - those who agree with me and those who think Sykkuno and I make ‘such an adorable couple’. The thread is ridiculously long, and if we take into account that it was only started approximately five hours ago, you can either view it as impressive, amusing or sad. Why sad? Because someone has dedicated so much time and effort into fueling the fire of a weakly supported theory.
I love Sykkuno with all my heart. Everyone knows that - fandom, streamer squad, Corpse and Sykkuno included. I love too much and too platonically to ever even dream of having a romantic connection with him. I thought that was more than obvious, but people are either blind here, or just grasping at straws. One thing’s for certain - they’re stepping on a nerve.
“Hey where’s Corpse? Did he disconnect?” Felix asks, gaining my full attention. My eyes dart to the monitor, searching through the little avatars in a desperate search for the one of my boyfriend. It’s nowhere to be found.
“He just messaged me saying his connection is unstable but he might join us later.“ Rae says, “You guys can invite someone to fill...“
“Bathroom break.“ I interrupt, not waiting for a response before shutting my mic off, putting the ‘BRB‘ graphic on my stream and yanking the headset off. I basically run down the hall to Corpse’s recording room, my heart pounding like a bass drum.
“Corpse?!“ I call out to him, one hand already on the doorknob. When five seconds pass by without a response, I barge in.
Inside, I find his usual spot on the gaming chair empty and his slumped figure seated on his bed.
“Corpse?“ I try again, watching for even the tiniest change of body language. He remains still as a statue, not bothering to look up at me either.
His hands are gripping the edge of the mattress, his head hanging low. His eyes are covered by the short curtain of his dark messy curls. I can’t gauge much. Is he angry? Is he sad? Both? How should I approach the situation?
Before I find the answer to any of those questions, I am kneeling in front of him, our height difference eliminated. I gently pry his hands off the mattress and take them in mine, holding them firmly but tenderly. With one hand I reach up to tilt his head so his eyes can meet mine. He complies, his tear-filled brown orbs meeting mine. Those tears have the same effect on me as fifty sharp knives stabbing into my chest. These tears focus their attack straight on my heart, tearing it to pieces.
“Baby....“
He cuts me off, “Why is it always someone else, huh? Do they deem me not worthy of being with you? Do they think you deserve better?” His voice wavers, “Well, they might be right. They are correct and there’s little I can do to prove them wrong. They mean you well, Y/N - pairing you with guys better than me. Those are some loyal fans you’ve got. They only want what’s best for you. And so do I. If ‘best’ is being with someone else then...”
It’s my turn to cut him off. I put an end to his nonsense ramble that’s slowly killing me by pressing my finger against his lips. The sternness of my gaze is beyond me as I get up and walk over to his computer setup. I put on his headset and hop into the call as well as the lobby with his avatar.
“Hey Corpse’s back!” Toast says, “Good to have you back buddy.”
“No, not Corpse.” I say in a casual, nonchalant voice.
“Wait, wha-“ Sean’s voice shows just how confused he is, representing the confusion of the entire lobby actually.
“I know all of you are streaming so this message will be heard by several different audiences so I’m gonna make myself perfectly clear.“ I take a deep breath, “Sykkuno and I aren’t dating. He’s a lovely guy and he deserves to find a girl who will treat him right. That girl isn’t and won’t be me though. I am already treating someone right. Someone who treats me more than right as well. An amazing person. A man-child with a heart of gold. You know him, to a certain extent. He goes by the name of Corpse Husband, but I prefer to call him ‘Love of my life’. Thank you for your time and attention, goodbye.“
I exit the call and turn around to find a stunned Copse looking at me.
“That was meant for you just as much.“ I say with a fake strict attitude, one hand on my hip the other rested on his desk behind me, “Were you listening?“
Within milliseconds, he’s on his feet standing directly in front of me, his lips inches away from mine. “I heard and memorized every word. But...” he pauses for a moment, “I think you have no idea how big of a chaos you just created.”
I smile mischievously, “We’ll worry about that later. For now...” I close the gap between us, connecting our lips in a sweet and passionate kiss.

A Jikook Guide to RunBTS: 112-121
Yes, I'm still doing these! It's just happening more slowly than I'd like because writing for work + writing fic + trying to go to bed before midnight + so much amazing content being released that clearly must be poured over and dissected = less time to make guides. For anyone still with me, he's the next section!
Ep 112 “Dalbang School Part 1” (Ep: 5 / KM: 4)
The ones with BTS in a classroom driving Teacher Jin insane
5:58 - JM declares that he and Taehyung will pair up (by being the first to hug each other in a game), but then when Hobi blows the whistle at 6:38, JK runs over to hug JM before Tae can get to him.
6:58 - Jin asks why JM said he wanted Tae and then hugged JK. JM explains that he didn't hug him, he just found himself in JK's hug as JK cackles in the background.
7:24 - When Jin blows his whistle at the class, JK and JM mirror each other in putting a finger in one of their ears.
7:35 - Teammates JK and JM are immediately on the same page about wanting their team name to be Kim Seokjin. When they have to change it, JM quickly picks up JK's suggestion that they call their team Bang Sihyuk. These don't sound like particularly unique moments, but when you watch it, it just really strikes you how in sync the two of them are in terms of physicality, ideas, and sense of humor.
9:52 - After Jin comments that he heard JM did very well in school, JK adds that JM was the top student. When someone else asks if JM was the best or second-best, JK forcefully reiterates that he was the best student.
12:45 - When they get a question right, JK and JM clasp hands and bump their shoulders together.
13:10 - JM and JK both goof around, speaking in satoori and challenging JHope to a fight of sorts.
13:27 - When Jin repeats that they got the question right, JK and JM do exactly the same as 12:45, but seated this time.
14:22, 14:36, 15:13 - In all three of these moments, JM nearly falls over laughing at something JK did that no one else found anywhere near as funny.
23:36 - When JK says he's good at this game, JM laughs and pokes JK in the chest with a marker.
BEHIND 2:30 - JM takes a selfie of him and JK with his personal phone while they're supposed to be paying attention to Jin.
6:35 - JK cheers on JM and calls him Jimin-ssi when JM announces he's doing well on this spot-the-difference round. When Jimin modifies the brag to say he only found four, JK says "that's still quite impressive."
Ep 113 “Dalbang School Part 2” (Ep: 5 / KM: 4)
4:50 - We all know how JK is when he gets into his "focus" zone, especially in a competitive environment. But here, when JM rather rudely interrupts JK's melodica practice, JK just starts playing around with him and giggles.
7:41 - As RM & JH take their turn, jikook are whispering to each other in the back row.
11:42 - After quickly agreeing on a lunch option, jikook do a high five / handshake thing and then JM says "we think alike" and "we get along pretty well." JK responds "that's exactly it" and the on-screen captions tells us they are a "good match."
22:20 - This is where JK and JM start switching back and forth carrying each other on their backs to get under a limbo stick.
They go again at 23:35, 26:11, and 28:13.
And again at 30:22 and 32:16 and 34:30 because, even though they lost, they want to try to do it again to show that they can as a "matter of pride."
25:00 - JK points something out to JM and then pats his butt.
33:33 - JM announces they lost, and then jikook do another handshake / high five thing.
34:33 - JM does an... interesting pose for the camera where he puts his hand on a bent-over JK's back and smirks.
34:56 - Yet another handshake and JM pats JK on the back when they finally pass the limbo challenge.
BEHIND 5:55 - While examining the limbo setup, JM comments that JK is good at this. JK comes over to give a demonstration and JM watches him be silly with it and says "he's a strange kid" fondly.
6:21 - Another jikook limbo attempt - this one was cut because they did it too easily.
Ep 114 “League of Number One Part 1” (Ep: 3 / KM: 1)
The ones where BTS play games with League of Legends world champions
3:55 - After Jimin protests that he shouldn't be out, JK tells his hyung to turn around and face the back.
14:40 - JK fake-boxes JM after losing the hammer game.
18:18 - JK mimics Jimin's BWL intro.
Ep 115 “League of Number One Part 2” (Ep: 2 / KM: .5)
BEHIND
7:05 - JK comes over to check on Jimin's phone to make sure he's actually visible in the selfie the teams take.
Ep 116 “Team-Building Special Part 1” (Ep: 4 / KM: 1)
The ones with random games in that rec room-looking place that are a lot more fun than they sound
22:14 - JM and JK play around with the jump rope during breaktime.
22:26 - JM and JK play around like they're boxing with each other.
BEHIND 5:15 - JK appears to take an interest in watching JM's... back as he moves around acting out potential poses.
Ep 117 “Team-Building Special Part 1” (Ep: 4 / KM: 2)
5:30 - Despite showing pretty much everyone else touching everyone else in the pose guessing game, we don't get a single shot here or in the behind of JK feeling up Jimin. The above photo proves that it happened, though, so definitely side-eyeing the editors, here.
BEHIND 5:35 - JK keeps throwing water bottles when they're supposed to be taking a group photo. Jimin pulls him back next to him and puts an arm around his neck. JK puts an arm around Jimin's shoulders in return.
7:51 - After it's explained that JK is staying late to watch Jin do his penalty, a packed-up Jimin comes over and stands next to JK, waiting until they're done to leave.
Ep 118 “Photo Story Part 1” (Ep: 3 / KM: 3)
The ones where BTS play a Samsung-sponsored game involving getting specific pictures while a spy tries to ruin the fun
4:22 - JM appears to direct JK to go punish Tae and pats JK's back when he starts to obey. Something happens that we don't see when the angle changes - next thing we see, JM seems to be pushing JK? JM then giggles at JK pretending to beat up Tae. (After this, JK spins around like a ballerina. Not jikook-related, just adorable.)
29:51 - JK calls Jimin twice without adding "hyung."
32:28 - JM pulls JK along by the wrist. Meanwhile, J-Hope once again mixes up their names.
32:44 - Though there is now a group walking slowly together and he doesn't need to pull him along anymore, Jimin takes JK's hand again.
37:02 - There are a bunch of seats open in the room, but Jimin walks over to sit right next to JK.
BEHIND 5:40 - When JM tries to steal a post-it from JK, JK scolds him in satoori banmal. JM calls him out for not calling him with hyung and JK quickly apologizes (in a way some k-army jikookers have said is like how a married person would respond to their nagging spouse!).
6:09 - JK and JM meet up and JK tells JM he's exhausted. There's a kind of weird moment that I fully admit I may be reading too much into where JK seems to be walking right towards JM, then abruptly stops and turns, looking at the camera, before walking with Jimin in a different direction than he had been heading. Then, JM says he thinks their matching shirts are hilarious and that it's funny they're wearing them for the show.
Ep 119 “Photo Story Part 2” (Ep: 4 / KM: 3)
8:21 - "You are me, I am you" moment: Jimin does a ballet spin the same way JK did in part one.
11:18 - JK is the only one to vote for JM to be able to keep a picture in other than Jin (who has nefarious reasons for doing so).
29:40 - JM goes over to help JK see how many of his photos the spy ruined and almost falls over laughing when it becomes clear it's nearly all of them.
34:21 - JM puts his hand on JK's shaking leg to help calm him (see above photo), but JK is so irritated that it doesn't work like it usually does. Poor bunny!
35:17 - JM pulls at JK's shirt and hand, then folds over his back while trying to get him to confess that he actually lost.
38:24 - JM has a comforting hand on JK's neck when he's acting upset about losing.
38:32 - When it seems like JK is struggling to come up with an ending statement, JM helps prompt him.
BEHIND
0:55 - JK talks about how amazing it is that Jimin found so many cards.
3:51 - When JK is playing with the sequin art on the front of his shirt, JM leans over and starts rubbing on them, too.
5:11 - Jimin tells JK that, if he wins, he's going to make the loser hike Mt. Achasan. JK asks why he's looking at him when he says that and they both laugh. Jimin pats JK's chest and they laugh even harder. Jin and Tae both have "omg, these two" looks on their faces.
Ep 120 “Reply BTS Village Part 1” (Ep: 3 / KM: 2)
The ones with a real-life Mafia game inexplicably set in a 1970s village. It's... fairly difficult to follow, but the guys are into it and the outfits are great!
24:40 - Jimin breaks character and laughs when asking JK if he's the culprit.
29:40 - Caption: "The air is undeniably tense between Gamer Jeon and Chief Park." Not explicitly jikook, I just find it funny that the writers seem to be playing with some real life relationships, making sope best friends and jikook have tension that leads to banter...
BEHIND
5:34 - When Jimin is playing with the yo-yo, JK expresses concern that he's going to hurt his fingers (caption: Kook is just worrying for his hyung). Then, JK asks poutily and in banmal if he can play with the yo-yo multiple times and Jimins says no. Like, JK straight-up gives his hyung a command ("let me try that") using informal speech and no one bats an eye!
5:58 - Jimin starts singing a song about an ants. JK watches him. JK initially says to Hobi "look, he's a fool/dummy!" (in banmal again), then starts singing along. He jokes that JM doesn't know all the lyrics and Jimin says back "quiet, you."
Ep 121 “Reply BTS Village Part 2” (Ep: 3 / KM: 2)
38:48 - After having asked for it a bunch in the Behind of the previous episode, JK now has Jimin's yoyo.
non-jikook note: At the end of this one, they "time travel" to solve a mystery in Joseon-era Korea and I can't express how badly I want to see that. Please come back to that, Run!
BEHIND 0:58 - Jimin and JK play around accusing each other with exaggerated accents and formality. Jimin comes up behind JK and reaches out to touch his shoulder, but stops when Tae joins them and accuses them of plotting together.
9:05 - When JK says everyone else is so good at acting, Jimin compliments him that he was very funny towards the end.

Personal Galaxy
Pairing— Jungkook x female reader
Genre— SMUT, Fluff, Established relationship au
Warnings— Explicit unprotected sex, slight exhibitionism (they’re outside), oral (m receiving), mild swearing, fluffy boyfriend vibes that will make you love Jungkook even more
Word count— ~4.1k
About— You and your boyfriend, Jungkook, decide to go stargazing as a special treat for your anniversary.
A/N— Happy Birthday Jungkook! This was a collab with @goldenclosetnetwork for their Golden Closet Net Jungkook Birthday Project. I hope you guys like it, please let me know what ya think! (also this beautiful banner was whipped up in record time by the marvelous @kimtaehyunq)
After college starts, summer is no longer a relaxing season dedicated to lounging around and goofing off with friends. Unfortunately, now summers were filled with internships or temporary summer jobs. You got the short end of the stick though, as your summer was going to be filled with summer classes. Along with taking summer classes, you had to deal with the grueling heat. Walking back and forth from your classes to your dorm was quite an ordeal, as the sun drained you of all your energy.
Your only solace of not going home was that you were close to your boyfriend, Jungkook. You guys started dating towards the end of the spring semester, so the relationship was somewhat new. He was nothing but incredibly sweet to you, and you honestly could not believe you were dating him. From what you observed, he was basically perfect.
At first you thought he was a little shy, but when you got to know him, you soon realized he’s just a huge lovable dork. He loved gaming, and bragged about what his rank in League of Legends used to be (platinum, he was in the top 8% of all people who played). You tried to take him seriously, but you couldn’t help but laugh. You didn’t laugh because you were making fun of him, you laughed because he was just too cute. You adored the way his eyes twinkled when he talked about what he was passionate about. He would get lost in his own world and ramble on before he realized you were still there. At that point he would reach out and pull you into a hug and ask about your day.
After a long day of listening to a boring chemistry lecture, you finally got back to your dorm. You freshened up with a quick shower and collapsed into your bed. You were about to drift off when your phone starts to buzz. It was a video call from Jungkook.
“Hey baby what’s up?” Jungkook beamed on the other end. It looked like he just got out of the shower too.
“Hey Kookie. I’m done with class for the day. Have I told you how much I hate chemistry?” you groaned in response.
“Plenty of times. In fact, multiple times a day. Can’t blame you though. You can relax when I come see you this weekend,” Jungkook tried to cheer you up.
Jungkook lived about an hour away from campus, so he stayed in a dorm during the school year. However, he went home during the summer break. With that being said, he insisted on coming down to see you every weekend. At first you protested, arguing that gas was too expensive and the commute would take too much time. But he simply said, “I just want to see my girl. What’s so wrong with that? It’s no one’s decision but mine.” You couldn’t argue with him after that.
“Why don’t we do something different this weekend?” you asked. This weekend would mark your 3 month anniversary.
“Yeah? Like in the bedroom?” he was intrigued.
“No! I mean...sure? Wait no that’s not what I’m talking about right now, you dingus. Why don’t we get away or something? There’s a park about an hour away that is known for stargazing! They have their own observatory and all that. Would you wanna--”
“Yes. Let’s do it.” Jungkook didn’t even let you finish. You knew he’d be excited. Along with videogames, anything pertaining to outer space had his heart. He loved reading about various stars, and was always hypothesizing how space travel would work.
The weekend couldn’t come fast enough. You spaced out in lecture often, but now you definitely couldn’t focus. The thought of being hand in hand with Jungkook while traversing the trails together was enough to make your heart flutter. That, coupled with the fact that you two would be under the stars without any air pollution, really had you on Cloud 9.
You gleefully hopped into Jungkook’s car in the late afternoon. Jungkook was wearing his favorite bucket hat with his usual casual clothes.
“Hello beautiful,” Jungkook leaned over to kiss you, “Let’s go get our dinner. How do ready made sandwiches sound?”
“Sounds perfect! Why don’t we get some fruit too?” you sat back in your seat.
“Ohhh healthy. Yes ma’am we can do that.” he drove to the closest supermarket.
“Hey babe, let’s get this bread,” Jungkook joked as he picked up a sandwich. You couldn’t help but laugh at his little one-liner. You both love that meme. You guys strolled over to the fruits section. Of course, there had to be a debate over which fruits to get.
“It’s hot outside so why don’t we get watermelon?” you suggested.
“Mm that’s a good point. But watermelons are basically just water. Why don’t we get pineapples instead? We can see if that myth really is true?” Jungkook wiggled his eyebrows at you.
“You dog!” you playfully slap his arm, “Let’s get both then. The more the merrier.”
“Okiedokie. Don’t act like you don’t wanna try the pineapple trick though,” he teased.
“Maybe I do. What of it?” you retorted.
“Nothing. That’s perfect for me,” he winked as you guys went to checkout.
The drive to the park was relaxing. Jungkook played his music and sang along to all the songs. You occasionally chimed in whenever you knew the lyrics, but you preferred to listen to him instead. Even when he was messing around, his angelic voice was still euphoric. You were pleasantly surprised when he first sang in front of you. You didn’t think it was possible to hear an angel up close.
Getting away from the city was something you needed. As the tall buildings faded in the background, a more sparse landscape came into view. You loved the open road. Sure, the neverending grass and scattered trees weren’t the most breathtaking view, but it was pleasant nonetheless. You saw the occasional cow or horse, and never failed to point them out to Jungkook. He would always respond with a “wow!” or a “so cute!” and chuckle at you. Everything you did was so adorable to him, though he wasn’t the most vocal about all that mushy stuff. He was sure he had already fallen in love with you, but he wasn’t sure if you felt the same yet. He’d keep that to himself for a little bit longer.
The park itself was nothing grand. It being closer to the coast meant that it was a little on the swampy side. After several attempts to make sense of the provided park map, Jungkook finally found a parking lot.
“Okay according to the map, this is the closest parking lot to the observatory. I think there’s a trail nearby too,” you say as you hand him the map.
“Let’s go!” Jungkook leapt out of the car before he could even see you trying to give him the map.
Jungkook grabbed the food from the backseat as you got out of the car. Sadly, neither of you had a stereotypical picnic wicker basket, so everything was just in the plastic shopping bag from the store. That didn’t make it any less charming when Jungkook started swinging the bag back and forth in one hand while doing the same thing to your hand on his other side.
The sun was beginning to set, but you could still feel its warmth in the breaks between the shady parts of the trail Jungkook led you on. The trail itself was basically a small gravel path that led from the parking lot to a picnic site overlooking a swampy lake. The trees that grew in the open grove by the picnic tables were extremely old, as they loomed high overhead.
Neither of you had spoken since you left the car. You were both enjoying the fresh air and new sights. The candid sounds of nature filled the air. From the buzzing of the cicadas, to the occasional whooping of unseen birds, the authenticity of it all had you in a trance. Jungkook squeezed your hand and you snapped back to reality. Your eyes wandered back to him to see a soft smile on his face.
“Is this table okay, baby?” he looked at you with his doe eyes.
“Yeah it’s good. Do you like this place so far?” you asked as you started to get the food out.
“I do. It’s beautiful. Everything is just so...natural. Obviously,” he chuckled, “The scenery is the second most beautiful thing here.”
“Mm okay I’ll bite. What’s the first most beautiful thing here?” you cocked your head in amusement.
“Me, of course! Why would you even ask that when you already know the answer?” he laughed.
“Oh you’re so right. How silly of me. I have your food here, you dork. Do you wanna start with the pineapples or watermelons first?”
“Let’s open the watermelons since it’s still kinda hot out,” he plopped down beside you.
You foolishly skipped lunch, so your stomach was killing you. Jungkook joked that it sounded like a dying cat during the car ride. Sometimes it got so loud that he could hear it over his music. He wanted you to eat while he drove, but you refused because you wanted to eat together. Thinking back, you realized you could have fed him while he was driving. It’s not an issue anymore though, not when you’re both wolfing down your sandwiches. The watermelon was definitely a good choice, as it was a perfect weapon to combat the heat.
There was a gazebo next to the water that allowed visitors to get a better view of the swampy environment. You led Jungkook over to it after packing up the leftovers (only a few pineapples were left). The water was murky, most of the vegetation that surfaced looked dead, and everything put together made the place seem perfect for filming a swamp horror film. Despite all of that, you couldn’t help but think it was still beautiful. Upon a closer look, you spotted some small turtles on the closest log by the gazebo. Of course you excitedly pointed them out to Jungkook, who cooed at how cute they were. Jungkook brought you closer to him so he could hug you from behind and rested his chin atop your head. He loved the height difference between you two, it always made him feel like that much more of YOUR man. He also mercilessly teased you for being short, but that was just an added bonus.
“Do you feel relaxed?” he whispered in your ear before nibbling it.
“I feel so relaxed, darling,” you say, leaning into him, “The sunset is gorgeous out here. Even if it feels like we’re about to get attacked by a swamp creature at any second.”
“Yeah, instead we’re being attacked by a billion fucking mosquitoes. Babe, I don’t think your bug spray is working,” Jungkook swatted away the hovering pests.
“But my mom got it for me! It’s supposed to be a more organic and natural spray,” you pout.
“Well, I’m sorry but your mom’s organic bug spray isn’t doing shit. In fact, I feel like it’s attracting them,” his swatting became more forceful.
“Oh, you’re not even getting bit. They’re all over ME,” you say as you started to feel insanely itchy all over your arms and legs, “Let’s go to the observatory, the sun has already begun to set. Also there are probably more mosquitoes here by the water, so let’s get the hell away from that.”
“There’s still about half an hour of sunlight left,” Jungkook observed after checking his phone, “We have some time to kill. Wanna check out more of this trail?”
“Sure. As long as it leads away from the water,” you shrugged as you followed Jungkook into the forested area.
Golden hour shone down through the trees. The rays made Jungkook glow and look even more ethereal. He rubbed his thumb over your hand as he led you down the trail. You absentmindedly brought his hand up to your mouth to plant a soft kiss on the back of it.
“I haven’t seen anyone on this trail the entire time we’ve been here,” Jungkook observed.
“It’s nice. It’s like our own little sanctuary,” you agreed.
“And you look so cute in that outfit of yours,” Jungkook’s voice lowered.
“What are you suggesting, Jungkook?” you played along, caressing his bicep.
Jungkook abruptly led you off the beaten path, into a more heavily wooded area. He spun you around into a deep kiss, backing you up against a tree. You palmed him through his pants, finding him already half hard.
“What if we get caught?” you huffed into his mouth.
“Doesn’t that make it more exciting?” he said as he nipped at your neck while fondling your breasts.
“I’m gonna have bug bites on my ass,” you laughed.
“I’ll bite your ass when we get back to even it out,” he chuckled into another kiss.
You forcefully switched positions with Jungkook as you tugged off his pants. You kissed along his jawline and down his neck before sinking to your knees in front of him. His erection bulged in his underwear, begging to be set free.
You teasingly licked him over his underwear, making him groan. As much as you wanted to continue teasing him, you didn’t want to get caught before he actually had the chance to fuck you.
You pulled off his underwear, leaving him fully exposed. You delicately kissed the tip of his penis like it was some sort of polite greeting. Then, you lewdly flattened your tongue on the base of his cock and licked a long stripe upwards and finished at the top with a swirl. You hollowed out your cheeks as you sucked him off at a repetitive pace.
“Do you want me to fuck you here, baby?” Jungkook huffed above you.
You looked up at him with innocent eyes as you deepthroated him. Saliva dripped off his cock and down your chin, a sight that would make any man sweat. You nodded and released him with a satisfying *pop*.
“You’re so fucking sexy. Switch places with me and face the tree,” he commanded.
You did as he said, bending over at the waist. He tugged off your bottoms, revealing your dripping core. He tantalizingly ran his tip along your folds.
“Hurry up! I don’t wanna get caught,” you complained as you wiggled your butt at him.
“So impatient,” Jungkook admonished as he slapped your ass.
You didn’t have time to complain because he jammed his dick into you immediately after his slap. You instinctively covered your mouth to suppress your moans. Your free hand toyed with your clit, rubbing it intensely. The thought of being caught at any second had you even more wet than usual. Jungkook noticed.
“You’re so wet. I’m gonna cum in no time,” Jungkook groaned as he thrust deeper into you.
Jungkook released his load into you. You moaned as you felt his hot juices fill you up, mixing with your own mess as it dribbled down your legs. Jungkook gave your ass one last slap before rummaging for a spare napkin in the picnic bag. He cleaned you up as best as he could, but you desperately needed a shower. That’ll have to wait.
Retracing your steps, you both wound up back at the parking lot, which was perfect because the trail to the observatory was just on the other side. The once empty parking lot was now nearly full as the new arrivals made their way towards the observatory. The sun was almost fully set at this point, so it was getting a little hard to see.
“Babe look!” Jungkook shouted as he pointed to a little creature that scurried in front of you. You jump back from his sudden yell, and then lock eyes with the possum that stood in your path.
“I don’t know whether to be scared or to call it cute,” you say, clinging tightly onto Jungkook’s arm as the possum lost interest in your staring contest and continued on its journey.
“I would say it’s cute. As long as it doesn’t attack you. Oh holy SHIT babe don’t look up!” Jungkook found himself frozen in place.
“Huh why-- OH MY FUCKIN GOD!” you neglected to heed his warning. Looming about two feet above Jungkook’s head was a gigantic spider. The web it was dangling from was enormous. You hate all kinds of insects (yes a spider isn’t an insect, but it falls under the creepy crawly category so you hate it too) but spiders are by far the scariest to you. After you screamed you clutched Jungkook’s arm tighter, probably cutting off his circulation.
“Okay okay just close your eyes and keep close to me. It seems like those guys are strung along the entire path,” Jungkook kept you by his side as you guys progressed past the trees. You helplessly kept your eyes closed and completely relied on Jungkook to guide you. Thankfully, it only took about three minutes to get past all the trees; the observatory was in an open clearing. Jungkook gave you the ok to open your eyes again.
“Thank you Kookie, you’re so sweet to me,” you kissed Jungkook softly on the cheek.
“Usually I’d make fun of you, but those things kinda freaked me out. So I could only imagine how scared you’d be of them. Don’t worry baby, I’ll protect you,” Jungkook returned your affection with a kiss on the forehead.
The line for the main telescope was already long, so you guys ventured off to one of the smaller ones instead. There were three big telescopes in the overall observatory. Amateur stargazers were scattered around the deck with their personal telescopes. You saw them letting other people see through them, so you made a mental note to check them out after the main telescopes. The sun had finally set, and now the dark sky was illuminated with shining stars.
As you waited in line, you looked back at Jungkook, who hadn’t let go of your hand this entire time. His eyes were glued to the wonders above him. His doe eyes were wide and twinkled more than you’ve ever seen before. His mouth was agape and you were amused by how captivated he was; everything about this boy was so pure. It was in that moment that you realized you had fallen head over heels for him. You wanted to tell him you loved him right then and there, but you held your tongue. You were worried that he didn’t feel the same way. Hopefully one day he could return the sentiment, but for now you will keep those three words to yourself.
“You lot are pretty lucky! It had been cloudy for the past week. Tonight’s the first night that the sky’s been clear. It’s also the perfect night to view Saturn!” the telescope’s attendant informed the people in line.
You and Jungkook were the next people to go. You were amazed at how big the telescope was, and this wasn’t even the big main one yet. You went first. You climbed up a small step stool to get to the eye piece. You peered into it and was amazed by what you saw. The image was not the clearest, but it was pretty evident that you were looking at Saturn because of the iconic rings. Of course you could look up better pictures of Saturn online, but seeing it for yourself made it more special. Experiencing it all with Jungkook was something you would not trade for the world. You waited for Jungkook outside after you finished.
“Wasn’t that incredible ___?! We actually saw all the rings! And it’s a pretty color! I mean it’s like a reddish brown. We can call it a rusty color because that sounds cooler...ah I can’t wait to go to the main telescope,” Jungkook grabbed your hand and bounded to the next line. Watching him get so excited was enough to make getting eaten alive by mosquitoes worth it (yeah, they never ceased their attack on you).
“Is this the best date you’ve ever been on then?” you squeezed his hand as he continued to bounce up and down. His abundant energy always amazed you, and certainly came in handy in certain situations *wink wink*.
“Oh is this a date? What? Do you like me or something, ___?” he teased, looking down at you, “Yes, this is hands down the best date I have ever been on. Thank you for suggesting this babe,” he grabbed your other hand and pulled you in for a kiss. You weren’t fond of PDA, but you’re willing to make an exception for Jungkook.
The wait in line lasted for about half an hour, and you wondered which celestial being this telescope was being focused on. Everything around the observing deck was kept dark to make it easier to see through the telescopes. It was also advised to not look at any phone screens because your eyes would have to readjust to the darkness afterward. You and Jungkook complied with the tip for the optimal viewing experience. Jungkook was rambling about UFO conspiracy theories when you interrupted him by pointing out the fireflies behind him. They danced in the darkness of the open air, and it was your turn to be captivated. Yes, you hated insects, but fireflies had a special place in your heart. You thought they were fairies when you were younger, and you would spend hours playing with them. Your parents would even help you catch them. The nostalgia that hit automatically put a smile on your face.
“You’re adorable, you know that ___?” Jungkook smiled as he wrapped his arms around you, “I wish you’d look at me that way,” he pouted.
“Oh shut up Kookie. I do look at you that way, but you never notice,” you stuck your tongue at him. Jungkook laughed in response. His laughter stopped and his eyes widened when he realized you guys were next in line.
“What is this one looking at?” Jungkook asked the telescope attendant.
“Oh, all three of these are pointed at Saturn,” he replied.
“Oh no, we waited in line for so long just to look at the same thing,” you said, shoulders sagging.
“Awesome! Since this one is the biggest, does that mean that we’ll get a better view than the other two telescopes?” Jungkook asked, his eyes twinkling once again.
“Uh, technically yes. But only slightly better, you probably wouldn’t be able to tell the difference,” the attendant replied as he let Jungkook enter.
From the way he asked, it probably didn’t bother Jungkook that he’d be seeing the same thing again. Once it was your turn, you realized the attendant was right. There wasn’t much of a difference in the quality of the image you were seeing, but it didn’t make personally seeing Saturn any less magical.
“Seeing it a second time was super cool. Can you believe it? People a hundred years ago would have never thought they’d see Saturn with their own eyes!” Jungkook greeted you when you came out.
“Yeah that’s all pretty dope, but I kinda wanted to see something else. Maybe some of the people who brought their own telescopes are looking at other things,” you took Jungkook’s hand and made a beeline to the amateur stargazers.
There was an interesting assortment of telescopes there. Some were big and bulky, some were sleek and aesthetically pleasing, and some just straight up looked like weapons. Multiple people were willing to let you both look through their telescopes. You both saw an additional two stars whose names you will never remember, along with seeing Saturn one last time.
You and Jungkook stood in the middle of the deck, gazing upwards to soak in the clarity of the stars before your departure. As if the night couldn’t get any more magical, a shooting star streaked across the sky. Oohs and aahs were heard from people in the general vicinity when they saw it too. Jungkook pulled you close to him, his face inches from yours.
“You know, maybe we were lovers in a past life, because I feel like I’ve known you forever. I think you’re the most special thing in this universe. Thank you for today,” Jungkook said tenderly.
“You’re welcome, darling. I would give you the whole world if I could,” you smiled, slowly leaning closer to him.
“For you, my dear, I’ll give you your own personal galaxy,” Jungkook practically whispered as he cupped your face and brought you in for a kiss. The kiss was the epitome of sweet, as his soft lips brushed against yours without much force. You swear you’ve never been happier in your life. Thank the stars for Jeon Jungkook.

Ep 209: The Phantom Horse of Greensboro
And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.
– Revelation, Chapter 6, Verse 8, King James Version
Description:
Many of us have taken an adventurous expedition to check out some local, notorious spot to see if we could witness or sense some evidence of a past famous or infamous incident. Most of the time, one only returns with a minor anecdote or pictures of an ordinary location bereft of anything noteworthy. The more realistic purpose is not so much to find a ghoulish memento but to imagine what it must've been like to have been there when it happened. But what if such an outing starts with strange coincidences and ends with the adventurers enduring a paranormal event seemingly unrelated to the original incident? This is the sort of tale we'll hear from our good friend, graphic designer, and illustrator Tommy Beaver about the time some friends went to check out the scene of a horrific crime that happened in Summerfield, North Carolina, almost 13 miles northwest of Greensboro. On June 3, 1985, the incident in question occurred when at the end of a murder spree and police pursuit, Fritz Klenner and his first cousin, lover, and accomplice, Susie Newsome Lynch, ended their standoff detonating a bomb in their Chevrolet Blazer. Klenner and Lynch had blown themselves up along with Lynch's already deceased two sons who were in the vehicle rather than face arrest. The site of this shocking finale was what the friends were hoping to explore, but their souvenir was an unsettling experience they'll never forget. Strangely, a mysterious white horse suddenly appeared to encounter the group, except that this creature may not have been a horse at all. Many people have claimed to see a spectral white horse, and the ancient Britons believed a sacred white horse was one's ride to the afterlife. Yet these friends may forever wonder, as will we, what was the connection of this beast to the tragedy if there is one? And if this wasn't a horse as we know it, what sort of monster haunts the location of one of North Carolina's most ghastly crimes?
Location:
The intersection of Strader Road & North Carolina State Road 150 in Summerfield, near where Fritz Klenner and Susie Newsom Lynch blew themselves up in their Chevy Blazer after a crime spree and police pursuit on June 3, 1985, and where Tommy’s friends saw the mysterious “horse.”

Damien The Littlest Brother
Or: Stuff Damian does with his siblings.
Dick
Dick in some ways was another form of idolization for Damian. Damian was so very young when they first met, younger still when Ra's and the league sunk their teeth into his heart and tried their best to tear it to shreds. Dick's role, part sibling part guardian, was the first major form of stability Damian had. Little Damian had been born with the mythos of The Bat hanging overhead, and the hope of measuring up to first his grandfather's and then his father's standards had nearly broken him.
Like a lot of children Damian didn't necessarily understand or appreciate what Dick was trying to do for him until he was older. But just like other children Damian clung to the emotional support and care Dick gave him, the care he had so often been deprived of.
Damian wasn't necessarily there for the events that shaped Dick and the rest of their family, but he is growing up in the aftereffects of it. Dick chose to give Damian the love he deserved, Dick chose not to punish a child for the situation he was born into. But Dick isn't perfect. He loses his temper, he gets frustrated, he gets things wrong, he makes mistakes, he bleeds. Dick, at least initially, was real and human in a way Bruce wasn't to a little boy who already had his future decided for him.
While he may not admit it, Damian looks up to Dick because in a lot of ways Dick is a better person than most. Dick is a good man, a better man than Bruce in some ways. He shows Damian what a hero actually is, and that the concept of being a hero isn't tied to the suit. Dick shows Damian that he can and is a good person, that he can make those decisions for himself and that his own emotional needs are not anything to be ashamed of. Damian is a boy first, not a weapon.
So Damian leans into his affection. There are shared naps after patrol, and days out getting ice cream or going to the zoo. Damian wakes a tired Dick up with a pillow to the face, and pillow fights and laughter ensues. Dick comes along to the school showcases, where an embarrassed Damian has pictures and paintings of their family up for all to see. He never once mocks Damian's desires, instead listening with seriousness to every moment of Damian's vulnerability.
That's what sticks with Damian the most. That Dick wholeheartedly believes Damian is a good person, that Damian can be good and kind and soft. He sees Damian fumble with his cool demeanor, growing shy and embarrassed when chatting with students his own age. Damian knows the names of most of his classmates, takes down random details that shouldn't be important to a stranger "We're NOT friends Grayson," but Damian talks to the youngest students about animals, and how to properly hold puppies. Damian has lists of underfunded animal shelters and regularly sends them to Bruce and Tim when preparations for the Wayne Foundation charity events come up. Damian knows most of the officers in Bludhaven since he occasionally stops by with something for Dick, a late lunch or hot drink or Dick's spare clothes in case he needs out of his police uniform. After many coos, head pats and cheek pinches, Damian is occasionally "babysat" by some of them while Dick is out on patrol of the police variety. He does not realize how much he has charmed Dick's co-workers, talking about his pets or his brothers.
Dick is the kind of hero, the kind of person, Damian was told wasn't real. That heroes were childish nonsense, that mercy and love were weak. The concept that someone could love him, that he was deserving of love instead of being forced to earn it, was foreign. But Dick Grayson was all of that. So Damian puts up less and less of a fight over the silly pictures they take together. Dick buys books about animals, and Damian grudgingly wears the cute stupid animal ear headbands Dick buys him. While part of Damian knows he won't be, the part that viciously beats "heroes" and "love" and "ice cream" back with a vengeance, another part of Damian, a very small fragile part, thinks that maybe if he grew up becoming like Dick Grayson the Person (TM) it wouldn't be so bad. "Awww thanks Dami!"
Jason:
Next to Tim, the Cain Instincts are strongest with Jason. Jason is constantly ruffling his hair, calling him names, and sitting on him. Jason does not give a single iota of a damn for any sort of authority except Alfred. Jason is not afraid of Damian.
So when Damian latches onto Jason's neck ready to strangle him, he laughs like it's the best thing he's ever seen, and a wrestling match ensues. They bond over it, over the goading and the competition.
They bond over books too, over stories and musicals and words Damian shouldn't care about but he does. Damian says he's too old for fairy tales even though he never had them to begin with, never had stories told when tucked into bed unless it was for a harsh life lesson. And yet Damian will find books as gifts for Jason, and Jason will read them aloud after Damian annoys him by pressing his feet into Jason's side. He swears up and down that the exaggerated voices and accented narration from Jason are done purely to annoy him. Damian constantly interrupts him, always asking questions and Jason tells him to shut up and be patient, "learn to listen demon brat."
They watch Disney and Ghibli, Laika and Illumination, and after a very enlightening conversation with one Tim Drake, Jason introduces Damian to theater. From Antigone to Romeo and Juliet, from West Side Story to Hadestown to Heathers the Musical. Bruce has walked in on them recreating various iconic sword fights too many times to count, quoting lines while dressed in blanket robes and crowns made of craft feathers and stick on jewels. Alfred thorough enjoys their riveting performances.
Like a lion teaching his cubs through play, Jason teaches him that he's never too mature for anything and screw anyone else who doesn't like it. Jason teaches him fun in a way Damian never allowed himself to have before, to look past his mission, and do things for enjoyment. He teaches Damian defiance and rebellion, two very important things for him to learn even if it's only interrupting rude rich people and disagreeing with his father over whether he needs to attend another gala.
Damian and Jason have a strange relationship, and initially aren't quite sure how to act around one another. Such large parts of their identity and experiences were formed by an indirect overlapping influence. Jason's death and the effect it had on the family and how they treat Damian, Jason's time with the league and the lazarus pit. But at the same time they understand each other in a way some of their other siblings don't. The strength and struggle in establishing their independence and identity means that their grudging respect turns into fondness with time.
Tim:
It appears that Cain Instincts don't particularly care if one is related or not, given the sheer amount of times Tim and Damian are at each other's throats initially. But with time they settle and grow more comfortable with each other, the words turn from anger to a grumbly sort of discontent, like irritated puppy's more than anything.
They bond over pride. They bond over failure. The two aren't that different really. They've seen each other at their worst. Missions with too many close calls, where the knife wounds cut too close and the bullets bit to deep, when the snap of Gotham's jaw came to close to closing over them and the only thing saving Gotham's Rogues from the collective wrath of two angry Robin's was the weight of their family's morals.
They had to learn to trust each other. But they do.
The insults are more to fill the silence, partially affection and partially with the need to annoy. They watch reruns of Star Trek and play Legend of Zelda in pajama pants (Tim) and hoody's (Damian), half draped over each other with his feet in Tim's lap. When Damian couldn't find one to his satisfaction, he gifted Tim a new skateboard with his own hand drawn and painted design. He sends a video to the family group chat of him laughing when Tim faceplants.
They are the DEFINITION of annoying to each other. Damian chucks clothes at Tim to make him shower, they get into slap fights over breakfast, they sneer at each other's drinks. "With all the coffee it's no wonder you don't grow Drake," While handing a sick Tim herbal tea for his throat.
It's an underlying trust that rarely needs to be affirmed. But when it does Damian won't hesitate to let his opinion be known. Whether it be high school bullies mocking his gangly brother, reporters trying to pit the "blood son" against the "Boy CEO", or shady members of the Gotham elite with too much interest in his family and his company, Damian's blunt attitude comes back with a vengeance. There will be no Wayne Charm, no shop talk, no backhanded compliments, when Damian Wayne gets between them and his brother. It's "I trust my brother," and "No business with the likes of you," or even "When I said you two weren't on the same level, I meant that you were the incompetent one."
Tim always tries to scold him, tells him he shouldn't be petty, I can protect myself demon, but he smiles while he says it.
Stephanie
She teases him mercilessly, will smile sweetly while "blackmailing" him and challenges him to do things he has never done before. Damian won't admit he enjoys any of it even upon threat of death. She's loud, annoying, and demanding and unapologetically so and Damian is convinced she was dropped on her head as a child. Stephanie is his sister and he loves her as a younger brother would, hurling insults at each other while fighting over french fries drinking smoothies in some fast food restaurant at 2 in the afternoon on a day out.
What strikes him about Stephanie is that she demands respect because she knows on a fundamental level that she deserves it, that all of her hard work was her own and she knew she could do it even when everyone else thought she didn't belong. As he grows Damian comes not only to admire her, but finds this a very important lesson to learn for himself.
Stephanie pushes him, she encourages him even if it's hidden under mutually shared insults. On days where she "babysits him" (she does not, Damian tells himself he doesn't need a babysitter he doesn't) she's perfectly happy to work on their motorcycles together, or have random picnics in the park with bags of fast food, or challenge him to rounds of ping pong. They learn eventually that they make a very good team together. Either destroying Tim and Jason in video games, the occasional local ping pong or DDR tournament when visiting Gotham U, or spur of the moment plans in a night time fight. Stephanie is crazy enough to believe it will work, and Damian is crazy enough to believe Stephanie will follow.
Stephanie understands what it feels like to constantly have to justify yourself, to be told you can't measure up and that you're place isn't here, even though you know it is. To have the weight of your family's decisions hanging overhead for the judgment of others.
So they learn to love each other through healthy competition and teasing remarks. Stephanie shoos him off to "talk to kids your own age, don't be so serious!". It's normal, in some ways the closest to normal Damian has had in a long time. And though they won't say it out loud, it's nice to know someone else agrees that they are entitled to these moments of happiness, these moments they were stripped of and denied for so long. They believe in each other and their right to happiness. Damian will never doubt Stephanie's strength, as spoiler or Batgirl or robin or Stephanie, and in return she will never doubt him or his place in their family.
...
Even if that means trying to escape when she wants to play dress up. "I am not your doll Brown," "Fine fine, whatever you say short stack."
Cass:
The moments between Damian and Cass are silent, but if you believe nothing is said then you are entirely wrong. They speak to each other quite often even if they don't use words.
He watches her dance, and thinks she is so strong. Damian swears she could have been a princess in another life, if life had not sunk its fangs in and poisoned her with pain instead. Just as he would have been a prince. While he initially tried to hide it, Cass always knew he was there. Damian watches her. Damian hears her words, her joy and her tears, and puts it down on to charcoal and paper. I hear you, and he shows them to her, how her form litters his pages as she pats his head. There is, Damian thinks, a poetic irony in seeing something so dangerous create something so beautiful. She is art and deserves to be heard, and Damian is grateful that she hears him too. He lets her look at pages of charcoal and ink, at canvases of paint full of everything Damian can't put into words quite yet, and finds understanding.
But while he is a Wayne, he was an Al Ghul at one point and his mother gave him the training every prince should have, skills beyond his sword. So one day, as she stretches, he brings in a case and sets it down with a clunk. He tunes the strings and plays Tomaso Albinoni's Adagio in G Minor, as she watches him with eyes that understand far too much, eyes that say I know, I hear you baby brother. Damian almost wishes she didn't, partially due to the struggle of his own pride, but also because no one should ever have to understand that kind of pain.
Moments with Cass are quiet, but they are never silent. Cass teaches him understanding, helps teach him empathy. And while Damian knows he can never dance the way she can, he can play and sketch and paint and between them their secrets can no longer be secrets. Cass doesn't teach him how to feel ,no, he's always been too good at that. Instead she teaches him ways to coax them out when the words won't come, to look around him with the wonder he wasn't allowed to have before, to let him be defined by a different set of skills that shows he can create something beautiful too.
Duke:
Damien thinks Duke is "cool", like the kind of cool you see in movies and TV shows, the average teenage boys in jeans and sneakers who fight for the underdog and stand up to bullies in a 3-on-1 fight even if they know they won't win. There is a conviction in Duke that rivals Damian's own, and Damian can't help but admire someone willing to strike out on their own and do something when they felt others were failing.
Duke is "Chill" as Jason likes to say, he's low pressure and not pushy in a way that Damian appreciates. He's calm, not in the stoic way of some of the others, but in a way that doesn't put Damian out of his comfort zone with expectations.
Time spent with Duke often consists of puzzles and card games, or movies. Duke is very good at using Damian's own pride against him to "trick" him into playing, but together they do everything from DnD to Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters. It's relaxing.
Duke tells him about school and if Damian is having trouble with the more normal things of being a tween, like worrying whether other kids like him, or wearing something embarrasing, Duke brings him out of his own head. Duke plays along with his competitive nature, challenging him to races the few times they patrol together. He finds Damian outside drawing, and teaches him soccer. Other times they sit there together, Duke writing whatever comes to mind while Damian sketches. Damian gifts Duke a detailed portrait of himself; standing in the center of the crowded streets, body spliced into neat clockwork-style segments with patches of his Signal uniform, the red jacket from his time in the "We R Robin" crew, his sports uniforms, and casual clothing, the bright light of his powers bursting from within in a halo under the Gotham smog. He is Gotham's daylight protector, unique and gifted, and Damian respects that.
It's not easy, Damian is still young and cocky, still isn't very good at saying what he feels. But Duke sees right through his attempts to play it off, and it's always met with head pats and a "Whatever you say lil' D." Damian won't say it out loud but he thinks that the sheer conviction Duke has for doing what's right bleeds into every aspect of him, and that maybe with time it will do the same for himself. Damian admires his strength of will and determination, and the work Duke is willing to put in to get what he wants.

An Overanalyzing Overture
To the vast nameless and faceless void of the Internet, hello.
My name is Ariette, and if you couldn’t tell by my screen name, I like to overanalyze things. It’s a habit I’ve developed over the years, and it drives my mother insane. To be clear, it isn’t that I hate everything that I play, watch, read, etc., it’s just that I find it fascinating to break things down into simple concepts that can be studied. Why do some things work while others fail? How does my worldview (and the worldviews of others) influence my perspective of the various forms of entertainment I engage with? To put it simply, why do I like what I like? Sometimes that answer can be found, while other times it remains elusive. It is a process I enjoy regardless of the results however, and I hope you will enjoy overanalyzing along with me.
For my first post I figured it’s best to keep it simple, so we will start with one of my favorite things: a list. Actually it’s more like a game of 20 either/or questions in a list format, but you get the point. This is a fun way for me to give you, the reader, a chance to see the sorts of things I enjoy discussing. I assure you however, that this is not a comprehensive list of the topics I want to cover in my posts. These were just the easiest topics I could turn into either/or questions.
1) Marvel or DC? (I might as well start out with one of the most predictable questions right?)
Marvel. That is entirely thanks to the recent Marvel Cinematic Universe however. If you had asked me this question when I was a child the answer would definitely have been DC. I enjoyed The X-Men cartoon growing up, but that was the only real exposure I had to Marvel till the first Tobey Maguire Spiderman film was released. As for DC, I adored the 1990’s animated Batman series as a kid, and I also consistently watched The Justice League and Teen Titans as well. As an adult though, I am far more invested in the MCU.
2) Batman or Superman?
Batman. Even as a child I found him to be a more compelling character. He has a complexity and vulnerability that makes him far more relatable to me.
3) Team Cap or Team Iron Man?
Team Cap. I don’t dislike Iron Man, in fact the first Iron Man film is still one of my favorite of the Marvel movies, but my beliefs and ideals align more with Captain America’s worldview.
4) Star Trek or Star Wars
Star Wars. Now I’m not one of those people that believe you can only like one or the other, but I do prefer Star Wars. Star Trek is fun, but I’ve only seen the original TV series (which I loved) and the three reboot films (which I loved, didn’t care for, and liked all right... in that order). As for Star Wars, I’ve seen all the films, played some of the games, read some of the books, watched both of the TV shows, and made a set of Mandalorian armor. So yea, you might say I’m into it.
5) Jedi or Sith?
Honestly, I wouldn’t do well in either order. If I had to guess however, I think I would likely be a Grey Jedi.
6) Clone Wars or Star Wars Rebels?
Star Wars Rebels. That’s a really tough question to answer though, and I could probably write a rather lengthy post about the pros and cons of both shows.
7) Since they are basically the same character… MCU Loki or Kylo Ren? (Key word basically, I know they have their differences.)
MCU Loki. Yes, I do need to specify MCU Loki as opposed to the version found in the comics and the actual Norse god they are both based on. A comparison of MCU Loki and Kylo Ren and a comparison of the different adaptations of Loki would both be interesting future posts as well…
8) Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones?
Lord of the Rings. I’ve never seen Game of Thrones, but if I had to guess, I would say there is too much needless nudity in it for my taste.
9) Hobbit, Human, Orc, Wizard, Elf, or Dwarf?
I wish I was an Elf, but I’m probably just a Human. I can say with certainty that I’m not a Hobbit. Their love of food is just something I don’t have.
10) Hand Drawn or 3D Animation?
Call me old school, but I prefer hand drawn animation.
11) Which would you rather listen to, a Movie’s Orchestral Score or a Movie’s Soundtrack?
A Movie’s Orchestral Score. No competition there.
12) Sega, PlayStation, Nintendo, X-Box, or PC?
Nintendo. My brother and I only owned Nintendo console and hand held games growing up because my mother knew she didn’t have to supervise the games we were playing as closely. I’ve tried out other consoles owned by friends, but my preference for the Nintendo has carried over into adulthood.
13) Mario or Legend of Zelda?
Legend of Zelda.
14) Pokémon or Digimon?
Pokémon.
15) Yugi and the Dark Magician or Seto and the Blue Eyes White Dragon?
Seto and his Blue Eyes White Dragon. The Dark Magician Girl is my favorite card though, with Blue Eyes coming in at a close second.
16) Books or Movies?
Books. I love using my imagination to create a mental picture of what I am reading in my mind.
17) Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, or Slytherin?
I’m a proud Slytherin.
18) Disneyland or Disney World?
Disney World. I’ve never been to Disneyland.
19) Disney or Universal?
Disney. The Harry Potter portions of the Universal parks are amazing, and I love the Mummy ride, but the number of actual coasters in the two parks is starting to dwindle as they continue to add 3D simulator after 3D simulator. Disney just has more variety in terms of special events, attractions, and shows.
20) Geek or Nerd?
It depends on your definition of those two words. By my own definition I am more of a Nerd. I’m not techy enough to be a Geek.
There you have it, twenty random questions that I hope have helped you to get to know me a little better. Now if you read that list and went “Ugh I don’t like any of these topics,” never fear. As I said before, my posts are certainly going to cover the things on this list, but they will not be limited to them. I am a huge fan of opera, music, the Twilight Zone, films of all types, documentaries, literature, baking, and the list goes on and on. All that to say, I can and will ramble on about a number of different topics with little regard to proper form or grammar, and I hope you will join me on this silly little analytical adventure.

Kobe Bryant’s 32 most iconic basketball moments, ranked
There were so many memorable NBA moments in Kobe Bryant’s career.
Counting down the most memorable moments of Kobe Bryant’s NBA career
Kobe Bryant’s life was cut short at the age of 41 on Sunday, along with the lives of 13-year-old daughter Gianna Bryant, six other passengers, and a pilot flying to the Mamba Academy on Kobe’s Sikorsky S-76B helicopter. This is a tragedy on multiple levels that goes far deeper than the loss of a famous basketball player.
For basketball fans, Bryant was a player that seared many of the sport’s most iconic moments in recent history. It’s impossible to remember them all, but in honor of his two jersey numbers (24 + 8), here are 32 that I’ll never forget.
32. The air-ball fest that started it all
youtube
It’s only fitting that we begin with his lowest on-court moment, which also happened to be his first significant one as a pro. Bryant averaged only 15.5 minutes per game as a rookie on the that 1996-97 Lakers team, but in that moment, they needed him out of necessity. Veteran shooting guard Byron Scott sat with a wrist injury, small forward Robert Horry was ejected in the third quarter for shoving Jeff Hornacek, and Shaquille O’Neal fouled out with 1:46 to play in regulation after foolishly biting on a Karl Malone pump fake. That left a teenage Bryant as their best hope to extend their season.
It took all of that to give him a formative professional experience that would drive the rest of his career.
31. A dozen threes in a game?
youtube
Fun fact: Kobe was shooting 28 percent from three-point range through the first 34 games of the 2002-03 season. My favorite part, via the Seattle Post-Intelligencer game story:
In fact, before the game, Los Angeles Times’ columnist T.J. Simers informed Bryant that his daughter — a state champion shooter — could beat Bryant in a three-point shooting contest. He asked Bryant to bet money on the contest, the proceeds going to charity.
30. The passes to himself off the backboard
youtube
Kobe wasn’t the first to pull off this move — that’d be Tracy McGrady, who did it in the 2002 NBA All-Star Game. But it’s befitting of Kobe’s audacity that he did it in a playoff game in 2008 against the Jazz, then even more spectacularly in a postseason game against Houston the very next season.
29. Behind the back on the Nuggets
youtube
The current Lakers have a a set play where LeBron James launches a full-court pass to a posting-up Anthony Davis off an opponents’ free throw. Here’s how I described it a month and a half ago:
In those situations, the Lakers like to take Davis off the rebounding line and put him on the opposite block for early post-ups the other way. (They borrowed this tactic from Alvin Gentry, who used it during the Pelicans’ brief Davis-DeMarcus Cousins twin towers era). LA inbounds to LeBron, and he rushes the ball up to feed Davis as quickly as possible, giving him space to go one-on-one before help arrives.
As the year has progressed, LeBron has become more audacious with his post entry passes. He’ll sometimes eschew dribbling up the court and instead toss 60-foot bombs on a rope to Davis’ waiting arms.
I’d like to think Kobe’s 2003 dunk inspired them.
28. Sharing 2009 All-Star MVP honors with his nemesis
youtube
Kobe’s ongoing feud with Shaq was so multi-layered that it has its own seven-part Wikipedia page. It’s hard to know when it really started and when it really tapered down, because both men weren’t exactly the most reliable narrators. (Remember when Shaq told Stephen A. Smith that “it was all marketing?” Nice try, big fella). But their 2009 All-Star experience is considered a key de-escalator in the overall cannon. As Shaq told USA Today’s Sam Amick in 2016:
“Everything became cool (with Bryant) my last All-Star Game in Phoenix,” said O’Neal. “Me and him got the co-MVP (at All-Stars). It was a great time, (and) my son Shareef, who was like nine (years old) at the time (was there).
“I was just going to give the trophy to Kobe, and Kobe looks at my little man and says, ‘Here you go, Shareef.’ ... I was kind of surprised that he remembered his name. He was like, ‘Here you go, Shareef. Here’s the trophy.’ Then I knew everything that happened (during the Lakers days) was silly.”
27. Welcome to the NBA, Dwight Howard
youtube
This was the first time Kobe tormented Dwight. It wouldn’t be the last.
26. Welcome to the NBA, Yao Ming
youtube
This game took place late in Yao’s 2002-03 rookie season, and Yao actually held his own with 24 points and 14 rebounds before fouling out. But the Lakers still got the last laugh, winning without Shaq in double overtime thanks to Kobe’s 52 points. “I feel like I want to get to bed quickly,” Yao said through an interpreter, via the New York Times. “Once I am asleep, everything is in the past.”
Fun fact: the voice you hear on TNT’s color commentary is none other than Jeff Van Gundy. Four months later, the Rockets hired him to be their head coach.
25. Welcome to the NBA, Ben Wallace
youtube
Your eyes don’t deceive you: that is indeed UNLV’s Thomas and Mack Center, future home of the indie-turned-mainstream NBA Summer League. At the time, it was the host of an otherwise forgettable 1997-98 preseason game between the Washington Wizards and the Los Angeles Lakers.
I’ll let Marcus Vanderberg of the now-defunct Ball Don’t Lie blog (miss u) take it from here:
With time winding down at the end of the first quarter, Bryant crossed over journeyman guard Jimmy Oliver and set his sights on the basket. Ben Wallace — either not knowing any better or proving that he didn’t give a damn even back in 1997 — stepped up in the paint and became the first person to find himself on a Kobe poster. Bryant took off from inside the free-throw line and demolished Wallace with a ferocious dunk that got Hall of Fame broadcaster Chick Hearn just a wee bit excited:
“Slaaaaaam dunk! Wooooo!”
24. Welcome to the NBA (Finals), Todd MacCulloch
youtube
Calling the 2002 NBA Finals anticlimactic is like saying snow is inconvenient for drivers. But in case there was any remaining suspense, this Kobe slam in the third quarter of Game 1 vanquished it. Eleven years later, ABC commemorated this dunk with one of the coolest Finals promos in recent memory.
23. Not yet, Kevin Durant
youtube
I’m a sucker for young buck vs. old head duels. This one wasn’t the most artful contest, nor was it the one that ended a playoff series. Kobe and KD both dropped more than 30 points, but they weren’t guarding each other. Both made big shot after big shot, but neither made a field goal in the final two minutes. It was ultimately Jeff Green’s missed three that ended things. Still, this game foreshadowed a passing of the torch and was a sign that the Thunder were going to be a damn problem for years to come. As Kobe told Durant and Russell Westbrook after Game 6, “Glad we’re done with you guys.”
22. Quiet, Denver fans
youtube
This was another epic Bryant performance against a younger peer (Carmelo Anthony) that has been lost to history. The scissor-kick three Kobe hit over J.R. Smith to give the Lakers a one-point lead with just over a minute left is still seared in my mind. So is that scowl, a Kobe specialty that peaked in that moment.
21. Speaking of sucking the energy out of the building
youtube
With 16 words, TNT’s Kevin Harlan simultaneously captured a single moment in Kobe’s career and the enduring quality that made him such a basketball villain to so many non-Lakers fans.
20. The buzzer beater on Dwyane Wade
youtube
Kobe had many regular-season buzzer beaters, but this one stands out because he redeemed himself for missing a game-winning attempt a few seconds prior.
19. Scoring 61 at Madison Square Garden
youtube
The Madison Square Garden mystique was cool, but I’ll most remember the spin move and jumper Kobe made on Wilson Chandler to cap the night off. Technical brilliance mixed with ingenious creativity.
18. Kobe Bryant 62, Dallas Mavericks 61
youtube
During the third quarter, Lakers TV analyst Stu Lantz delivered a prophetic line. “The only guy that can stop No. 8 tonight,” Lantz proclaimed, “is Phil Jackson.” It turns out Kobe was the one who declined Jackson’s invitation to re-enter the game in the fourth quarter, but the point still stands.
17. The infamous non-flinch
youtube
Like many Kobe moments, this one ended up being too good to be true. Still, I had to include it.
16. Vanquishing the “Kobe Stopper”
youtube
Ruben Patterson was once an end-of-the-bench Laker who, according to legend, nicknamed himself the “Kobe Stopper” for the way he defended Bryant in practice. (As with other Kobe stories, this one is more myth than reality). Patterson eventually left the team and established himself as a key defensive player for Seattle and then Portland.
That brings us to the 2003-04 season finale. The Blazers had just been eliminated from the playoffs for the first time in 22 years, while the Lakers needed a win to clinch the Pacific Division. Still, Portland played hard, and would’ve stolen a victory had Bryant not hit two impossible long threes to end regulation and overtime. The first was with Patterson in his jersey, while the second was a moonball that fell into the hoop as Patterson and Theo Ratliff rushed to close out.
With the win, the Lakers rose to the No. 2 seed and dropped the Kings to No. 4. That made a big difference in their eventual NBA Finals run.
15. The Magic never had a chance
youtube
Another brilliant Kobe playoff performance that has been lost to time. It wasn’t his most prolific or most important, but it set the tone for a series that was only going to go one way. I most enjoyed Kobe performances that showcased his all-around game, and this one was a textbook example. Here’s an old Silver Screen and Roll breakdown that’s well worth your time.
14. The 50-point streak
youtube
The league’s current pace-and-space trajectory may render this streak less impressive with time, but it was absurd in the moment. Here’s a summary.
13. Take that, Alvin Gentry
youtube
It’s easy to forget how close the Lakers came to losing the 2010 Western Conference Finals. They dominated the first two games, only to be flummoxed by a daring Suns tactic to use a 2-3 zone to limit LA’s inside dominance. LA never really solved the Suns’ wrinkle, but maintained a 3-2 series advantage after Metta World Peace’s serendipitous buzzer-beating putback in Game 5.
That set the stage for Kobe to brutally shut the door in Game 6. After mostly deferring in the first half, he staved off a furious Suns comeback with a series of impossible shots. His second-to-last bucket was a spinning fadeaway 21-footer over Grant Hill and Channing Frye to push the Lakers’ lead back to five. His final hoop: a pump-fake, rise-up jumper over Hill from nearly the same spot as the shot clock expired. As it dropped through the net, Kobe gave Suns coach Alvin Gentry a gentle butt tap, as if to say, Nice try.
“There’s an intense game going on and you almost have to laugh at what he does,” was Gentry’s interpretation. “I mean, I thought we played great defense on him. He just made tough shot after tough shot.”
And Kobe’s?
“It looked like a much tougher shot than it was.”
12. See ya, Sacramento
youtube
My favorite Kobe playoff performance once you separate out the stakes. It had everything we’ve come to know about Kobe.
He flew back to Los Angeles during the one-day break after Game 3 because Vanessa was in the hospital. Once he felt confident she was OK, he returned to Sacramento late on the night before an afternoon Game 4.
He embarrassed nemesis Vlade Divac with a thunderous poster dunk early in the game.
During the second quarter, he told an enraged Chris Webber not to chuck the ball away after an offensive foul because he wanted to beat the Kings at full strength. NBC’s Jim Gray said this was “a real good show of sportsmanship.” That’s one way to put it.
When interviewed at halftime, Kobe told Gray he was happy the Lakers were losing because they needed a challenge.
Kobe bullied his way for 19 free throws and 16 rebounds.
His final bucket involved him splitting an attempted double-team for a layup to put the Lakers up four.
He told reporters that he viewed the game as “a life-or-death situation,” even though the Lakers already had a 3-0 series lead and had won their previous 14 games. (Not to mention Vanessa’s real-life health scare).
11. See ya, San Antonio
youtube
All of the above, distilled into one play.
10. The unofficial passing of the torch
youtube
We all figured this would be Michael Jordan’s last game against Kobe Bryant. The stars were aligned for something special. It still exceeded expectations.
It looked to be MJ’s night early on. He nailed his first four jumpers, then picked off a lazy Shaquille O’Neal pass and took it to the house. But then Kobe started shooting and scoring, and shooting and scoring, and shooting and scoring, and shooting and scoring. Twenty-five points in five minutes. Forty-two at halftime. Fifty-five in the end, mirroring the double nickel Jordan dropped against the Knicks in 1995.
“It came to a point where there was that curiosity factor: was he going to hit 80? I’m sure it went through his head,” said Phil Jackson, foreshadowing the future.
(There’s a story going around that Kobe wanted to get payback on Jordan for dissing him after an early-season Wizards win, but the timeline doesn’t quite add up).
9. That 6-24 game
youtube
Let’s keep it 100 for a second: Kobe was awful in Game 7 of the 2010 NBA Finals and was ultimately saved by Pau Gasol and Metta World Peace. But the Lakers’ ultimate triumph was also a fitting tribute to Kobe’s determination in the face of failure.
8. The alley-oop to complete the Portland comeback
youtube
History remembers this play as a symbol of the Kobe-Shaq relationship before it got messy. The reality is more complex, yet also makes the moment even richer. From Roland Lazenby’s 2016 book Showboat: The Life of Kobe Bryant:
Witnesses could hardly believe what they were seeing — a bonding moment between the center and the guard — but the victory was proof. It was as if Bryant had refused to get discouraged, and that paid off by season’s end. ‘I think they came to respect each other,’ [longtime Phil Jackson assistant coach Tex] Winter said, although the coaches could never be sure what the players were merely doing as a public gesture and what they truly felt. Scoop Jackson, for example, saw O’Neal running around at game’s end, looking to celebrate with anyone but his foil.
Asked about O’Neal, Bryant shrugged. ‘We just do it our separate ways,’ he said. ‘That’s all we did all season long. It just depended on what we needed in certain situations. So even though we go our separate ways, it all linked up in the end.’
In 2009, blogger Jason Kottke noticed something funny on the unedited version of the clip, which has sadly been removed from YouTube: (That last part is a stretch, alas).
O’Neal throws it down and the camera follows him as he heads down the court yelling in celebration, totally blowing right past Kobe, who has his hand out to high-five Shaq. Kobe half-heartedly grabs at O’Neal’s forearm as he passes; Shaq doesn’t even notice. [...] The unedited clip of the play1 shows an awkward ending to this awkward moment. After celebrating with the Lakers bench, Shaq looks for Kobe and the two finally acknowledge the play together. But it’s a brief moment; they slap hands and go their separate ways, foreshadowing Shaq’s departure four years later.
Knowing this only deepens my appreciation of the moment. The beauty of basketball is that two people without much real-life chemistry can become simpatico in an instant when they step between the lines.
7. Saving the Redeem Team
youtube
Kobe’s most notable impact on Team USA was intangible. He was the last star to commit to playing in the 2008 Olympics, and his commitment signaled the importance of reclaiming basketball supremacy to a younger crew of stars that included the future Banana Boat crew. His leadership and work ethic rubbed off on those players, elevating them to levels they may not have reached otherwise.
But I’ll remember the way Kobe pushed them over the finish line in the fourth quarter of the gold medal game when Spain’s zone confused everyone else. Whenever Spain got close, Kobe had the answer. They couldn’t stop him.
Months later, he hung his gold medal in Pau Gasol’s locker during Lakers training camp in an attempt to motivate him. Ruthless, uncomfortably cruel, and ultimately successful: straight out of the Kobe playbook.
6. “Bryant, for the win. Baaaaaaang”
youtube
This was when Kobe’s individual supremacy peaked. A few reasons why:
It came at the end of Kobe’s best individual season, when he averaged 35 points a game in leading a decrepit Lakers roster to 45 wins and a postseason berth. Imagine Russell Westbrook’s MVP season, but even more individually overwhelming. That was Kobe’s 2005-06.
The Suns actually wanted to play the Lakers in the first round. According to Jack McCallum’s book :07 Seconds or Less: My Season on the Bench with the Runnin’ and Gunnin’ Phoenix Suns, the Suns believed they could easily exploit the Lakers’ transition defense and bait Kobe into selfish play. They even rested key players for a late-season ABC contest to help facilitate the matchup.
The final 12.6 seconds of regulation were wild. With the Suns up five, the much-maligned Smush Parker, who was 1-14 from downtown in the series to date, hit a standstill three to cut the lead to two. Steve Nash, of all people, turned it over on the ensuing inbound, and Kobe sidestepped around Raja Bell and hit the game-tying floater over Boris Diaw’s outstretched arms. Absurd shot. (D’Antoni then drew up a beautiful out of bounds lob play for James Jones that failed because the officials ignored Luke Walton’s blatant hold.)
The Suns still led by one in the closing seconds of overtime when Nash bizarrely dribbled to the sideline. He attempted to pivot away from Walton and Lamar Odom and signaled for a timeout. But instead of calling a foul or honoring Nash’s request, the officials called a jump ball, even though a still photo later revealed Walton’s foot was out of bounds as he tied Nash up. Walton tipped it to Kobe and you know the rest.
At the time, it felt like the Suns were cursed and Kobe was destined to find a way to win no matter the circumstances. Which, of course, made Phoenix’s rally from a 3-1 deficit to win the series even more improbable.
5. The free throws after tearing his Achilles
youtube
Longtime Lakers trainer Gary Viti once said that this was Kobe’s “gutsiest moment.” I don’t think Viti was referring to Kobe’s physical pain — a fully ruptured Achilles actually hurts less in the moment than many other serious injuries. Instead, I think he was noting Kobe’s strength to fight through his mental anguish at the thought of his body finally breaking down after years of feeling indestructible.
Watching Kobe’s postgame interview only drives home that point. He looks like a man finally coming to terms with his own athletic mortality.
4. A legend is born
youtube
Most remember Kobe’s first championship run for the Game 7 comeback against the Blazers, but the six-game NBA Finals series win over the Pacers was no walk in the park. Kobe badly injured his ankle in a Game 2 victory when Indiana’s Jalen Rose slid under him on a mid-range jumper. (Years later, Rose admitted he did it on purpose). Kobe missed Game 3, an easy Indiana victory, and was a doubt for Game 4. He refused to shoot layups during pregame warmups, telling NBC’s Ahmad Rashad that he was “saving it for the game.” The game went to overtime, and with 2:29 left, Shaquille O’Neal fouled out jumping for a rebound with Rik Smits.
Remember: the Lakers hadn’t won a title yet and were up against a vastly more experienced team on the road. Lose this game, and the series would be tied 2-2 with Indiana hosting Game 5. The MVP was on the bench, and his co-star was operating at less than full capacity. The series swung in the balance.
Kobe’s response:
A vicious crossover and pull-up jumper on Reggie Miller on the next play.
A rise-up shot from nearly the same spot over a flummoxed Mark Jackson.
A crucial block from behind on an Austin Croshere layup that would have cut the lead back to one.
A reverse tip-in after the Pacers successfully denied him the ball with 5.9 seconds left to shove the advantage back to three.
This was when his clutch legend was born.
3. A curtain call for the ages
youtube
A cartoonish mockery of the game of basketball for three quarters that turned into something magical by the end. That it upstaged the Warriors breaking the goddamn single-season wins record made it even more memorable.
What a perfect way for Kobe to go out.
2. 81
youtube
Kobe’s basketball reputation is built on the premise that he plays his best when the moment is biggest. It’s ironic, then, that his best individual performance came in one of the most anonymous settings of his career.
The game took place on Jan. 22, 2006, a Sunday that was cleared for the NFL’s two conference championship games. Regular Lakers announcer Joel Meyers was calling the NFC title game, leaving backup Bill MacDonald to fill in. Jack Nicholson didn’t show up. Several other regular celebrities begged off the game.
Early on, there was little indication that Kobe was about to have one of those nights. The Raptors came out in a 2-3 zone that cut off the rest of Kobe’s teammates. They took a double-digit lead and swelled it to 18 to start the third quarter. Kobe had 26 first-half points: noteworthy, but hardly unusual.
In fact, it was part of the plan. As Toronto point guard Jose Calderon told ESPN:
People always ask me, “How is it possible to let one guy score 81 points?” Because we were winning almost the whole game. He can keep scoring as long as we’re up. Yeah, he’s killing us, but the rest of the team is doing nothing, and we’re winning. We didn’t think he would keep scoring like he was.
Once Kobe started heating up the third quarter, Raptors players pleaded for a change in strategy. Instead, coach Sam Mitchell stayed the course. “It was the most frustrating thing,” guard Mike James told ESPN. “Maybe that should have been one of those times where we were rebellious and went against Coach’s will.”
To this day, Mitchell defends his decision. As he told CBS Sports’ James Herbert in 2017:
It’s always funny to me ‘cause I look at the other side, if we win the game. Because it’s not like we got beat by 30. We were winning the game. My thought process during that was one, how can we slow him down?, and two, we can still win the game. As great a game as he was having, I thought we had just as good a chance to win the game. We were winning. So, you know, you’re trying to stop him because if you can stop him, it increases your chance to win. But also, you’re saying even if we don’t stop him, we can still win this game.
He gives himself too much credit, but he also has a point. Whatever the Raptors were doing was working for a large stretch of the game. Then, out of nowhere, Kobe caught fire and directed the sports world’s attention to a game they otherwise would have ignored.
And yet, as magical as this night was, it won’t stick with me as much as ...
1. Kobe and Gigi, geeking out
youtube
... a father and a daughter — a teacher and a student, a mentor and mentee — gleefully sitting courtside while nerding out over a piece of basketball minutiae in a mundane regular-season game between two losing teams.
I’ve watched this sequence hundreds of times in the last 48 hours, and it still gets me. The world didn’t just lose a basketball star Sunday. It lost a past icon and a future legend. It lost a proud father and a happy daughter, sharing in a routine moment while doing what they both loved.
Rest in peace, Kobe and Gianna Bryant.

A/N: thank u for requestin this i love it sm omg and that is a very valid dream i hope i did it justice. Also the ending is so weird i kinda hate it im so sorry but like,, idk i hope its alright i (spoiler) didn’t make yall kiss i thought it wouldve been too weird and rushed.
Word Count: 4,000 (yikes sorry)
“HI, I LOVE YOUR BLOG. I would like to make a request. Bucky x reader where the reader is the new computer engineer for Tony and she lives in the Stark Tower. Weeks later, she has a secret crush on Bucky, but she was afraid to even talk to him because she is very shy and has a lot of insecurities, especially with her body. But all ends well. FLUFF EVERYWHERE PLEASE. I know it's very specific, and a little silly, but it's like my dream.”
Warnings: a teeny but of cursing and body image issues (nothing major)
“Welcome to the team!” Mr. Stark stood in front of you, gesturing to the huge laboratory before you.
“Thank you,” you said, intimidated by the man, the legend himself.
When you graduated MIT three months ago, you never expected this. This was obviously your dream job, it was everybody’s, working for Tony Stark. So, of course, when you were approached by a Ms. Pepper Potts, you were ecstatic. You immediately accepted the offer, coming in for an interview a mere four days later. The questions were boring and had little relevance to the job. Tony knew he wanted you to work for him, there was only an interview in the first place as a formality.
Once he told you that you got the job, he offered to let you live with him (and the rest of the Avengers) in Stark Tower. You talked to your parents about it and agreed it would be easiest. Once you told Tony you would take him up on that offer, he was overjoyed. He had you moved in within three days. And this is where you were now. The tour.
He showed you around the whole building, even the rooms that you knew you wouldn’t use, like the training gyms. You made a point to ask about what you would be considered and he assured that you would be, in no way, responsible for the Avengers nor a part of it. You had no interest in being a superhero nor did you possess the skills. You were happy and comfortable in a more technological setting, like his lab.
His lab was by far the most impressive and most appealing place in the entire building. You were enthralled by everything, but it was almost nothing compared to the lab. You hit it off with Dr. Banner immediately, still starstruck, you admired him and read close to all of his papers when you were in school. He promised to meet with you once you got comfortable to discuss his stance on molecular fission, which made your entire month.
It was easy getting along with Dr. Banner, as you had a lot in common with him. Tony was also easy. It was the other team members you were worried about. It wasn’t like you could avoid them, you lived in the same building and were bound to run into them sometimes, and of everybody that worked at Stark Tower, you would be the one who worked the closest with him, save for the Avengers.
When it came time to meet the rest of the team, your heart was beating a million miles per hour and your palms were sweaty. You had heard stories about them and all their heroicness but never in a million years had you dreamt of meeting them.
Tony arranged a small, informal party, much to your request. You wanted nothing big or extravagant so this small social was more than enough for you. You wore a simple black dress that fell to about your mid thigh and nude heels. You hair was nothing fancy, just a bit of curl at the end. You hoped you weren’t too overdressed. You also hoped the dress flattered you, not wanting to look bad.
You stepped in the elevator, holding the door for Dr. Banner who entered behind you. He was in a button up shirt and khaki pants, he complimented your dress and assured that you were dressed perfectly. You walked into the living room together, him immediately going to the bar to get you a much needed drink, just to calm your nerves. He handed you the mixed drink and you thanked him. He nodded and walked off towards the center of the group.
“Hello, (Y/N).” Tony came up behind you.
You turned. “Hello Mr. Stark.” You took a sip of your drink.
“Ready?” He asked.
“As I’ll ever be,” he knew about your hesitation to meet the team and he understood the whole anxiety thing. It was one of the many things you two bonded over.
He gently took your hand and led you to the group. Once you reached the outside of the circle, he cleared his throat.
“May I have all of the attention, on me, please.” He smiled cheekily, his hand still holding yours. Everybody turned to look, a smile blooming on their lips once they saw you. “This is (Y/N) (Y/L/N). A new member to Team Stark and she’ll be working closely with us so… be nice.”
Everybody immediately started saying their greetings and ushering you into the group. You were sat comfortably in between Natasha and Wanda, who were making sure everybody was being nice and behaving themselves.
The fascination only lasted a couple minutes before everybody got bored of Nat and Wanda hogging you so the group slowly dissolved into them doing their own thing, talking at the bar, playing pool, socializing.
“I’m really intrigued by your powers, Wanda. I always have been.” You were making small talk with the Sokovian.
“Thank you, darling. What is it that you’re working with Tony for?” She asked.
“I’m a computer engineer. I’m currently helping him with designing a new AI.” You shrugged, knowing she probably wouldn’t be interested in hearing a twenty minute speech about exactly what you do.
“Interesting.”
“Excuse me, Ms. (Y/L/N), may I borrow Wanda for a few?” Vision approached the two of you.
“O-of course.” You were a bit star struck, you marveled his powers and his abilities. You’d love to be able to study him one day.
“Thank you.” He smiled and whisked Wanda away towards the middle of the room.
You sighed and went to take a sip of your drink, not realizing there wasn’t any left. You chuckled softly at yourself, hoping nobody saw you. You stood, hoping to not bring attention to yourself, and walked to the bar.
“I saw you were out.” You heard a voice behind you.
“Uh, yeah. Do we serve ourselves?” You turned and were met with Tony.
“I’ll get it. What were you drinking?” He took your glass and walked behind the counter.
“Um, I don’t really know. It was red.” You silently cursed yourself for not knowing your drink. Now you look stupid.
“That’s okay. I’ll make you the famous “Tony Stark”.”
“A superhero and a bartender, how diverse.” You teased, thanking your lucky stars you were sounding so smooth. It must be the alcohol.
“What can I say, I’m a man of many talents.” He slid the drink in front of you.
You took a sip and felt the alcohol run down your throat. “One hell of a bartender.”
“Are you having fun tonight?” He asked, leaning against the counter.
“It’s alright. I haven’t really talked to many people. I had a small conversation with Natasha and Wanda but they’re with Clint and Vision now.” You shrugged, not bothered in the least about it.
“Is there anyone you want to talk to?” He asked, a small smirk gracing his lips.
You turned and surveyed the room. You were obviously interested in everybody but your eyes stopped when they landed on Bucky Barnes. Bucky Barnes was attractive, but he was also obviously way out of your league. Especially when he’s so fit and you’re… not.
“Not specifically.” You turned back to him.
“You sure?” He asked, knowing you were lying.
You just smiled.
-
“Good morning, Wanda.” You greeted the girl as you entered the kitchen that she was sat at the table in.
“Good morning.”
You and Wanda had grown closer over the past few weeks that you had been working here, it turns out that you two have quite a bit in common and she was very understanding of your awkwardness around new people. Because of this, you indirectly became closer with Vision. You wouldn’t intentionally hang out with just him but you were significantly more comfortable around him than your first meeting.
“What are you doing today?” You asked, pouring yourself a cup of coffee.
“Going out with Vision for lunch, then we’re going to an art museum.” She gave you a small smile, knowing you were going to ask if she wanted to do something.
“Sounds fun.” You ignored the sympathetic look she gave you.
You hated when people felt bad for you in situations like this, it’s embarrassing and unnecessary.
“I think you would get along with Bucky, you should talk to him,” she suggested and you snorted.
“Talk to Bucky Barnes? Sure, Wanda,” you joked, like you would ever talk to Bucky, pfft.
“It’s true. He’s actually a good person, and he’s cute.” She winked.
“Hey! Stay out of my head!” You said, a humorous tone in your voice.
“I never said anything about you, (Y/N).”
Your face immediately flushed.
“I don’t need to read your mind to know you like him.”
“I just think he’s cute. I don’t really know him, I don’t know anything about him so I technically don’t like like him.”
“I also don’t have to read minds to know you’re lying. Just admit it, you like him. I won’t tell anyone.” She held up her right hand.
“Oh, what is this we’re talking about?” Tony walked into the kitchen.
“(Y/N) has a crush on somebody.” Wanda blurted out.
“Wanda!” You groaned.
“Barnes?” Tony just looked at you.
You nodded, face hotter than the coffee in your cup.
“Yeah, I knew it.”
“How?” Jeez, did he read minds too?
“You talk to yourself when you’re frustrated.” He suppressed a chuckle at your flustered face.
“I’m sure Cap has gotten in some good words for you, I think he knows you like him,” Tony said and Wanda made a noise of agreement.
“Wait a minute, you told Steve?” You asked, furrowing your eyebrows.
“No, but it’s not that hard to figure it out.” He shrugged and Wanda agreed again.
“I hate you guys.” You shook your head, giving them a smile as you left the kitchen.
You decided to go to the lab and get a head start on your work even though you didn’t technically start working for another hour. You were in no rush so you were walking slowly, not really paying attention to much around you.
“Good morning, (Y/N).”
“Good morn-ing.” Your voice faltered when you looked up and saw Bucky.
“Where are you headed?” He asked, looking in the direction you were headed.
Oh shit, you were gonna have to say actual words. “The lab.” Your mouth felt as if it were filled with cotton.
“Oh. See you around?” He asked and you just nodded. He gave you a smile that made your knees weak and walked in the opposite direction.
You bit your lip, still standing in the same spot. You shook off your nerves and finished the walk to the lab.
Once you got to the lab, Dr. Banner greeted you.
“Good morning,” you said absentmindedly.
“What’s up?” He asked.
“Nothing.” You shrugged.
“You sure? I saw Barnes walking past the lab, you didn’t talk to him?” He smirked.
You narrowed your eyes at him. “I did… Why?”
“No reason,” he said casually.
“Sure,” you replied.
-
“(Y/N), it’s late. Think about actually going to bed tonight?” Bruce said as he cleaned up his work station.
“Ha ha.” You rolled your eyes. “I’ll just finish up this report and get some food then I’ll sleep. I promise,” you added once he gave you a dad look.
“Alright. Goodnight, (Y/N).”
“Night, Banner.” You waved as he closed the door behind him.
It only took you about twenty five minutes to finish the report and send it to Tony’s work email. You saw it was 11:30 and decided to warm up some left overs. You made sure to lock up the lab and rode down to the 2nd floor where the kitchen was.
Once you got to the kitchen, you opened the fridge and spotted a container of leftover macaroni and cheese. You happily took it out and popped it into the microwave. You sat at the island in the middle of the kitchen and waited for it to beep. Once it did, you stood and opened it. You started to pull it out and froze when you heard something behind you.
You slowly turned and grabbed your chest when you realized it was only Bucky.
“Holy shit, Barnes!” You exclaimed. “You nearly made me pee myself,” you said, your heart still racing.
“Sorry ‘bout that darlin.” He gave you a small smirk. “Didn’t mean to.”
“It’s fine,” you said quietly. You bit your lip at the nickname, trying not to melt then and there.
You pulled the container out of the microwave and set it on the island counter.
“Would you like some?” You asked, pulling the silverware drawer open.
“Ummm, sure.” He shrugged.
You grabbed two forks and set one in front of him. You sat at one of the stools and he sat across from you. You both picked up your forks and dug into the pasta. You both went for the same piece and it ended up on his fork.
“Hey.” You pouted. “I wanted that piece.” You scraped your fork against his and he moved it out of the way.
“Shouldn’t have been so slow.” He teased, giving you yet another butterfly-inducing smirk.
You stuck your tongue out at him and he laughed at your childish behavior.
“Here.” He offered you his fork.
You squinted at him and took the fork gingerly from his hands. You took the pasta in your mouth and sighed when it reached your taste buds.
“Thanks,” you said shyly, handing the fork back to him.
He dipped it back into the container and pulled out some more pieces. He put the fork in his mouth and you were momentarily glued to his actions. The way his lips wrapped around it and his tongue poked out to get all the cheese.
You snapped out of the temporary trance and grabbed some macaroni on your fork.
“So, what are you doing up so late?” Bucky asked, making conversation.
“I was finishing up a lab report for Tony. Also, I’m still kinda used to working late nights from college,” you explained and he nodded. “What about you?”
“Couldn’t sleep.” He shrugged.
“Oh… sorry.” You didn’t know what to say.
“It’s fine.” He sighed, giving you a tired smile.
You continued eating in silence for a while until the container was empty.
“I just ate so much macaroni…” You trailed off. You kept your thoughts to yourself as you didn’t want to burden Bucky with your negative thoughts of yourself.
“Me too.” He laughed but you weren’t sure if he understood your implications.
“I should probably go to bed… I told Bruce I would actually sleep tonight.” You let out a chuckle and Bucky nodded.
You both walked in a comfortable silence to the elevator and rode it up to the level Bucky’s room was on, as his was on a lower level than yours was. He stepped out but hesitated. He turned around.
“Wanna watch a movie in my room?”
Your stomach jumped into your throat.
“Sure.” You smiled, hoping your exterior didn’t match how nervous you were on the inside.
You stepped out of the elevator and followed him to his room. When you got there, you glanced around it. It was fairly similar to yours, it was a bit bigger and had a slightly different setup.
He had his own bathroom, same as you, a king sized bed with white bed sheets against the off-white painted wall, in front of a big window with black curtains that went all the way to the floor. He had a plain wood dresser and bookshelf which held a couple shelves worth of books. There wasn’t any art on the walls or personal belongings on any shelf on the wall. It was… boring compared to Bucky.
“So,” he said, “what should we watch?” He asked.
“Umm. We could watch an X-Men movie? Those are always good,” you offered.
“I’ve never seen them,” he said and you gasped.
“Okay, we definitely have to watch them. Let’s start with the first one. They’re amazing,” you gushed and he just nodded along.
“I think we have the DVDs in the common room on this floor. Should we go get them?” You asked quieter, now a little embarrassed that you had gotten so excited.
“Yeah, let’s go.” He subtly reached for your hand and you very slightly pulled away when his finger brushed yours but he grabbed it anyways.
You both walked into the TV room and leaned in front of the cabinet. Your eyes scanned the shelf and spotted the first movie. You slid it out and wiggled it in front of him.
“It’s so good.”
“I’m excited.” He grinned and the two of you walked back to his room.
You slid the DVD into the player (Bucky insisted you do it as he still didn’t know how it worked), pushed play and sat on the edge of the bed.
“Y- uh, you can like get under the blanket,” Bucky said then quickly added, “if you want.”
“Uh, thanks,” you said softly, sliding next to him.
You heard the opening music and Charles’ opening lines and remained still. You didn’t want to take up too much room and you certainly didn’t want to bother him by touching him or anything. You were also nervous as hell. You could feel your hands and legs trembling slightly, your heart beating a hundred miles a minute. You bit your lip and kept your attention forward, on the young Erik Lehnsherr.
Up until about halfway through the movie, the air between you and Bucky was tense, stale. You had wanted to say something multiple times but got too scared and decided not to.
Bucky had noticed your hesitation and felt bad, he didn’t want to make you uncomfortable but he desperately wanted to hold your hand, or brush your legs together, anything. He got an idea.
“I’m gonna go get a water bottle, want one?” He asked, sliding out of the bed.
“Umm, sure.” You shrugged. “I’ll pause the movie.”
He nodded his thanks and left the room.
You sat, thinking this was the perfect time to maybe get a little more comfortable in the bed so when he come back you’ll be a little bit closer. You snuggled back into the fluffy white pillow and pulled the blanket a little further up so it covered your stomach. Good, you thought.
Bucky returned within a couple of minutes and before he sat down, he held out his left arm with a water bottle and before you could reach for it, pulled it back with a muttered “sorry” and replaced it with his right hand.
You furrowed your eyebrows and reached for the one in his left hand. You slowly took it, still sort of confused.
“I didn’t know if this bothered you.” He lifted his left arm vaguely but you shook your head.
“Not at all,” you responded softly.
He nodded and climbed back into the bed. This time, you felt that he was closer to you as you could feel his body heat and his right leg gently pressed against your left. You took a sip of your water, your throat dry all of a sudden.
It was quiet in the room for a moment, just the two of you listening to each others breathing before you reached for the controller.
“Sorry,” you said nervously and moved to push the button.
“Wait.” Bucky took the controller from your hand and moved to face you. “I-” He interrupted himself by accidentally knocking your water bottle from your hands and gasped as it spilled all down the front of your shirt.
“Oh my,” You set the water bottle down, shocked at how cold the water was.
“Ah, shit. I’m so sorry. Here, I-” He got up and moved to his dresser. He pulled out a dark blue t-shirt with some design you didn’t really recognize and held it out.
“Um, I have a towel in the bathroom under the sink you can change into this shirt. I’m sorry, I’m such a klutz.” He shook his head as you got up and gratefully took the shirt.
“It’s fine, really.” You smiled at him as you walked through the bathroom door and closed it.
You looked under his sink, assuming that’s where the towels would be and pulled a fluffy white one out. You took your shirt off, sure to avoid looking in the mirror and pressed the towel against you, soaking up all the spilled water. You slipped into his t-shirt and then turned to the mirror. It fit you nicely, it wasn’t too big and baggy. Though, maybe he would’ve liked it to be super big, maybe it would look good on somebody else. You shook the thoughts from your head, not wanting to upset yourself right now.
You balled up your other shirt and the towel and opened the door.
“‘You can toss those in the corner over there. I’ll wash your shirt and give it back to you tomorrow.” Bucky surprised you as he was just outside the door.
“Uh, thanks.” You tossed them on top of the pile of other clothes and stood still.
You and Bucky were only inches apart, neither of you moving.
“What I was going to say earlier was-” he reached for your hand with his metal one and intertwined your fingers- “and please, tell me if I’m overstepping boundaries or making you uncomfortable, but I think you’re an amazing person and you are incredibly beautiful and fuck you look good in my shirt.” He bit his lip out of nerves.
“I-” your throat felt like the driest desert and you didn’t know how to respond. Obviously this is something you wanted to hear, you were attracted to him and he was returning the feelings but how does somebody even respond to this?!
“Oh my, you don’t feel the same and I probably just totally ruined what friendship we had going and I-”
“Bucky.” You interrupted him. “Stop. I do feel the same way I’m just not good with words, I don’t know. I’ve wanted to get to know you since that one night Stark threw that party for me. I’ve just been too nervous.”
“Nervous?” He asked.
“Look at you! You’re attractive and you’re a superhero and you’re fit and I’m none of those things.”
“Well, I’d hardly say I’m a superhero but who cares about being fit? You’re amazing exactly the way you are and honestly, I wouldn’t change a thing about you or your appearance.” He said in all seriousness.
He brought you into his chest, tightening you in a warm embrace which you gladly accepted. He felt you relax in his arms, almost as if you were sighing away your worries and couldn’t stop the smile on his face.
You pulled back and he looked you in the eyes.
“Thank you, Bucky. I really appreciate that.” You said, a little embarrassed you brought your insecurities up.
“Of course, darling. Never be embarrassed to talk about things that concern you or things you’re sad about. Especially around me, hell I talk about embarrassing things all the time but I have no shame. You gotta be comfortable with yourself.”
“I’ll work on that.” You smiled, happy he wasn’t making fun of you for being embarrassed.
“Hopefully not right now because I kinda wanna finish this movie. I’m invested.” He smirked at you and you nodded.
“Oh, definitely we’re finishing it.” You grinned and plopped yourself into the bed.
He followed, pulling the blanket high on your bodies and pushed play on the remote. He wrapped his arm around you as he pulled you closer into his side. Your eyes remained on the movie but rested your head on his shoulder, grateful for the whole night.

Lamar Jackson and Mark Ingram’s friendship is so much fun
The two have been hyping each other up all season, and it’s awesome to see.
The Baltimore Ravens and their explosive offense has taken the NFL by storm during the 2019 season. The two biggest stars from the system, quarterback Lamar Jackson and running back Mark Ingram, are a dynamic duo on the field.
This season, each rushed for 1,000 yards — just the seventh time a pair of teammates have done that in a single season. In total, they’ve combined for 5,598 yards of total offense, accounting for almost the entirety of the Ravens’ yardage this season. This is first season the two have played together, too. Ingram started his career with the New Orleans Saints, where he played for eight seasons from 2011-18, and the Ravens picked him up as a free agent in the offseason.
It’s worked out for Ingram and Jackson on the field, but what’s even more awesome to see is their friendship off it. Throughout their first season playing together, the two have been supporting each other along the way.
It’ll be a joy to watch that continue into the playoffs
Even before the Ravens were seen as legitimate Super Bowl contenders, Ingram had high praise for Jackson.
In Jackson’s rookie season, he was known for what he did running the ball, with 17 rushing attempts per game in his seven as a starter. Then, in the first two weeks of the 2019 season, he threw for more touchdowns (7) than he did in all of 2018 (6). But he was still running the ball with moves like he was playing in a video game. In Week 3, he did both, scoring a rushing touchdown late in the fourth quarter, and throwing for 267 yards in a 33-28 loss to the Chiefs. One of his runs in the first quarter looked doomed at the start, until Jackson (somehow) made magic:

Ingram was asked the following week about what it was like to see Jackson make defenders look so silly when he takes off on the run.
“He’s wild, man, like, he’s amazing,” Ingram said. I don’t think there’s anything like him in the league as far as just extending plays and being able to juke defenders. He’s special. Sometimes he’s scrambling and we’re all out there like: ‘Do we block? Do we trying to get open?’ You know what I mean, it’s just like you’re trying to be there for him, but he’s just doing crazy stuff. But that’s why he’s a special player he can extend plays and buy time for us to get open.”
As the season progressed, Jackson and Ingram continued to power the Ravens into an offensive juggernaut. Since a Week 4 loss to the Cleveland Browns, the Ravens have gone undefeated and earned the No. 1 seed in the AFC. Throughout the year, the two kept hyping each other up.
After Baltimore’s 41-7 win over the Houston Texans in Week 11, Ingram introduced Jackson at his press conference.
At this point in the season, Jackson was the MVP frontrunner. The Ravens were 8-2, and had just demolished another AFC contender. Jackson had already racked up 2,258 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, and just six interceptions, along with 781 rushing yards and six more scores on the ground.
Ingram took a stand for Jackson’s MVP candidacy after the game, and also said anyone who has a problem with Jackson winning MVP can come see him about that:
youtube
“Now I would like to introduce y’all to the man, the myth, the legend. The MVP frontrunner, if anybody else has something different to say about that then come see me. I’m right here in B-More outside the bank if you have an issue with that come see me, I’m ‘bout that! Big truss, Lamar Jackson in the flesh.”
Sidenote: ‘big truss’ has emerged as a team motto for Baltimore this season. Jackson has been tweeting it since last season, but it caught on with the rest of the Ravens this year. The definition has a lot of different meanings to certain players, via the Baltimore Sun:
[Kicker Justin] Tucker’s interpretation was more personal. “Truss that if I say it, I mean it,” he said. “It’s that simple.”
Defensive tackle Michael Pierce called it a “mixed-use word,” something like Owings Mills’ answer to the Hawaiian word “aloha.”
“Depending on who you’re talking to, it may mean different things,” he said. “For me, it just means you trust your brother, you trust your family, and we all got each other’s backs.”
It wasn’t until Ingram’s press conference and usage of the word at the podium that others knew about it being used in the locker room.
Jackson and Ingram have even done the same touchdown celebration dances.
During the Ravens’ big 45-6 Week 12 win over the Los Angeles Rams, Jackson copied a move Ingram did on a previous score:

Jackson finished with five passing touchdowns against the Rams on Monday Night Football. Ingram added two more touchdowns — one rushing and one receiving. After the game, Ingram once again urged anyone who has a problem with Jackson winning the MVP to “come see him.”

At this point, Ingram should be named Jackson’s MVP campaign manager. In fact, I hope Ingram introduces Jackson when he inevitably accepts the award, TBH.
In Week 15, the Ravens clinched the AFC North with a 42-21 victory against the Jets.
Jackson rushed for 86 yards and broke Michael Vick’s single-season rushing record during the Thursday Night Football game. Fox sideline reporter Erin Andrews let Ingram conduct a postgame interview with Jackson. The result was television gold (it starts right around the 1:30 mark)

Jackson: “It feels good, but you know we have a lot of season left to play and we have two more banners to hang up.”
Ingram: “So you’re telling me the story’s unwritten right now?”
Jackson: “Unwritten right now.”
Ingram: “Book unfinished?”
Jackson: “Right.”
I’d love to see Ingram interview Jackson more often, just saying.
In Week 16 against the Cleveland Browns, Ingram finally reached the 1,000-yard mark for the Ravens on the season.
Ingram rushed for 55 yards in the Ravens’ 33-15 win over Cleveland, and it put him at 1,018 yards on the season. But Jackson didn’t know he had eclipsed 1,000 yards until CBS Sports’ Tracy Wolfson told him during the postgame interview, and Jackson’s reaction was priceless:

The Week 16 game ended up being the last time these two played in the regular season, as they rested up for the playoffs during the Ravens’ Week 17 game against the Steelers.
It’s really fun to see a team that seems to love each other go so far.
This season, we saw John Harbaugh gush on the sideline about how his QB has changed the game forever. Jackson is convincing his head coach to go for it on fourth down like he’s a kid playing in the schoolyard. The Ravens are even running things like the Heisman formation, featuring Heisman winners Ingram, Jackson, and backup QB Robert Griffin III in the backfield.
Ingram and Jackson’s relationship epitomizes just how fun this Ravens team is. Ingram is currently questionable for the Ravens’ first playoff game against the Titans this weekend. But whether he’ll be on the field or on the sideline, he’ll be cheering Jackson on more than anyone.
