how do you choose colors?? i love your color choices and wanna know how you do it

oookay, i don't actually know what i am doing with colors 90% of the time, but there are some guidelines that i follow, so, i hope this will be useful ":3

so. one of the main things that i use almost all the time is complimentary colors! a very cool very useful thing, good for everything. complimentary colors are the ones that are opposite each other on a color wheel. a proper color wheel, not the one that drawing apps use, because that one most of the time has the colors distributed wrong 😔

the thing about complimentary colors is that they make each other stand out more. so if you use them in equal amount and saturation they will fight for attention and don't look as good. another thing is that if you put gray on one complimentary color it will appear to have changed the hue to its pair. uhhh its hard to describe with words, but just try to fill a canvas with one saturated color and draw something gray on it, its an optical illusion of sorts.

so uhhhhhh, what im trying to say is, complimentary colors compliment each other (wow), so using them for accents and shadows and backgrounds will generally make both stand out and look better? idk, here are some examples so it hopefully makes more sense

and so you change the amount of color, it's saturation, hue, warmth, tone, other smart words, and it changes the feeling of the picture! as you can see i really like my greens and reds, they're almost in every picture, but it still looks different (hopefully). if you can't full on change the color of something, if you have a set design for example, bringing the complimentary color in shadows and highlights or background works too! try different things see what's for you!

and, of course, using complimentary colors doesn't mean you can't use any other color! its more like, complimentary colors establish this connection that's pleasing to the eye and everything else is whatever you want it to be! i also have no idea about using more than one pair, generally one is enough but technically it works?

i also try not to use more than 3 main colors for a piece, like, blue-red-yellow but no green, or green-blue-yellow and no red, and stuff. (key word is "try" of course lol) this has nothing to do with the color wheel, just uhh general color balance? but this is about um, "clean" colors. you can absolutely use all 4, if one of them appears different because of the lighting and stuff? again, its hard to explain color with words. plus it all depends on a style, its not a rule, that's just how i do it

and then all the things outside of theory, like, don't use black and gray for shadows, it looks dirty. a lot of artists don't use pure black at all, but i just can't help it i like it too much. i try not to use pure white for things like clothes and eyes and other things that are in-universe colored white. its fine for highlights but for everything else i usually use grayish yellowish color, it looks much more pleasing. things that are closer are more saturated and have more contrast, things that are far have less saturation and less contrast. things that you want to attract attention should have more contrast, and the other way around

TLG: Final 10 Episodes Sketch Dump

September 2nd once again fell on a Labor Day, like it once did when the final 10 episodes of TLG dropped on WatchTLG (due to its early release on the old DisneyNOW app). The alignment of the exact day, month, and holiday five years later put me in the spirit to sketch away as I rewatched these episodes.

I was there when the countdown on the WatchTLG site had about an hour left. I hadn't seen a full episode of TLG until that point because I at the time thought I wouldn't be into it. I saw the synopses for these episodes leaked somewhere online and was doubtful yet VERY hopeful that the one with Vitani's Lion Guard was going to be a real episode simply because I wanted to see her in new content, regardless of my familiarity with the show.

When I binge-watched these final episodes with a friend, my relationship with the show improved as I went to watch the rest of the show over the next few months. I was so grateful to see so much content and worldbuilding for the TLK universe

Sketch descriptions under the cut:

1. Friends to the End

I've said this before in a review of this episode, but whether or not the writers intended this, their portrayal of irritability brought on by an anxiety attack is astounding. Kion's anxiety is piled up more and more when he's in a hurry to find a cure at the Tree of Life, Bunga repeatedly tells him he's becoming like Scar, and the rest of the group just "blind leading the blind"-in their journey SO badly because they're a bunch of unsupervised freshman-aged kids who are in their "Well I wouldn't go THAT far" or "Can I be the devil's advocate" phase.

This situation of fearing becoming like a shitty family member and being told you are by people when you're already in a vulnerable state is just SO vile and unfortunately so real. I found myself relating hard to this episode due to Kion's valid af anger in this episode, which is why I had to draw Kion claiming his "Don't you just wanna go apeshit??" era.

Kion is basically me throughout this episode and the entire first half of Season 3. It is SO HARD to get through this season sometimes when these same couple of lines keep coming at least once per episode. As soon as I hear Fuli saying "Uhh... Kion?" or "KION!!" I know exactly what's coming.

2. The Tree of Life:

Since we never get to see Sahasi and Ananda's color palettes they had in life, I took what I could make out from their spirit forms as well as some creative liberties, and came up with what they may have looked like on Earth.

Ananda is where Baliyo gets his freckles and dull, dark pelt, and where Rani gets her purple pupils, red nose, and dark tail. Sahasi is where Rani gets her richer pelt and where Baliyo gets his nose gradient, multicolored mane, and lighter tail color.

Fun Fact: According to some email responses from a member of the team who worked on TLG, they said that Sahasi was meant to be Janna's son, which for me, puts an end to a debate I had in my head where I was stuck between either him or Ananda being Janna's child: On one hand, I liked the idea of Sahasi and Surak being the foils of Mufasa and Scar, but also liked the idea of Ananda as Janna's daughter and heir since they looked so alike, as well as it solidifying the martriarchy headcanon I have for the Night Pride. Though the team member didn't straight-up provide Sahasi's relation to Janna and Surak as an absolute fact, rather it was simply the gist they got from the creation of Sahasi's character, it's an answer from a team member at all, which I can absolutely settle with. I decided to give him a similar fur color to Surak because of that.

3. The River of Patience:

I just HAD to doodle eepy Kion. It's like the one part of this episode that sticks with me outside the wholesome therapy dynamics and Kion heroically holding the flower between his teeth. This is basically him but if he fully succumbed to falling asleep waiting for the log.

4. Little Old Ginterbong:

Can I just say that I fucking LOVE Mama Binturong's character?? She's absolutely insane and constantly looks like an addict that needs her fix. She makes me nostalgic for some reason, and I think it's gotta do with her Mama Gunda vibes (which is odd because I wasn't even that young when I saw Tarzan II). I had to draw her doing the thing lol

5. Poa the Destroyer:

All I could think about throughout this episode besides the rare Evil Beshte is how insufferable Pinguino is. I mean it in kind of a good way, his personality is so ridiculous that he's made me laugh a few times.

6. Long Live the Queen:

Surprisingly, the sketch regarding this episode is probably the least expected subject matter out of anything I could've put here: An idea that's been forming in my head for a bit now was the idea of Bunga and Binga continuing the fostering/babysitting business of Bunga's "uncles". Bunga is shown to be a natural with young animals in a few episodes, and it continues in the subplot of this episode where he watches over Varya's cubs.

7. The Lake of Reflection:

The one thing that viscerally stuck with me in this episode was the unbelievably cute design they gave bby Cheezi. Had to sketch him.

8. Triumph of the Roar:

Obligatory Askari sketch because I actually love drawing him and making headcanons of his era. Looking back... he kinda looks like he's looking down at the events of the bottom drawing in slight disappointment.

9. Journey to the Pride Lands:

Drew Azaad (for what I think might be the first time) with the only thing he seemed to be doing throughout this episode -- taking any opportunity he can to comment about how much better cheetahs are at basically everything. He's fun to draw and I'd like to do more art of him one day.

10. Return to the Pride Lands

This is a sketch of what I deadass thought was gonna happen during this scene the first time I saw this episode lmao. At the time, the previous two episodes were fresh on my mind so I thought Kion was once again going to spam his tornado ability, but with Vitani as his subject for his demonstration. She already knew so little of the Roar as it was, given her absence throughout most of TLG's storyline, but could you imagine what she must've been thinking seeing how much Kion's Roar evolved?

GO AWAY. Knife is Mami because like why not!!1! Instead of Charlotte or whatever the little pet thing's name is, it'll be uhh uhh Dora doll or something idk. also to kinda explain Taco basically the first few times "Madoka" died, it wasn't Microphone, but Pickle. After awhile of going back in time to save him, he just.. Didn't show up one day for school. The day Taco was enrolled. Instead, she decided to befriend Microphone because she just kinda put together that if she stayed w/ Pickle, he'd keep dying. (I don't know how it works <3) She thought if she befriended somebody else, Pickle would be safe and so would the new friend! Because why the hell would she coincidentally also become a magical girl and die!!1! Idk bro, the universe said 'he's had enough' and yeah lmao. The last thing Taco would want is for Microphone to end up like Pickle, so she's doing everything in her power to prevent Mic's death!!

Normally.

Lets consider this is the normal one but the real normal is "to be a pain"

He wouldn't. He doesn't even want to get up. But your phone is too far from his reach and it's too comfortable to leave. He nuzzles in the crook of your neck, inhaling your sweet scent mixed with your lotion.

"Babeeee" he whines. "Your alarm has been going off for the last 15 minutes? Think you can do something about it please?"

"Mn. 5 more minutes pleasee" You mumble in your sleep, head buried in the pillow, eliciting a giggle from him.

It's a daily thing and both of you knew that. The 5 minutes might turn into 5 hours and you'll still somehow manage to doze off without a worry in your sleepyhead.

He hugs you a little tighter before dragging you up along with him, rocking back and forth with you, saying sweet nothings in your ear waking you up (mostly because if he annoys you in the morning, he'd be found dead in the next two seconds).

To be sweet.

This usually happens when you return late at night from a week long mission or when he fully knows you've been having a hard time recently, he tries his best to be extra sweet.

He wakes up a little early, drawing you a bath so you can relax. While the water is filling up he gets you breakfast, since he's prohibited from cooking but at least he knows how to make your favourite kind of tea.

Giving you a gentle kiss on your cheek as he slides an arm under your back, helping you get up.

"Good morning, sweet. I've got you breakfast and drawn a bath for you. What do you want first..... Or perhaps you want me?" He mischievously jokes earning a smack on the shoulder from you.

In an emergency.

I dont really imagine what kind of emergencies he might have. But I can think of three to be specific.

Case 1:

If anything that wakes him is your phone ringing because someone called you at an ungodly time.

Thankfully before it could even bother you, he picks it up just to find out about an emergency exorcism of a special grade curse that appeared out of nowhere. All it did was annoy him, he was irritated by the higherups who decided to summon you at 4 in the morning.

No he still doesn't wake you up. Instead he decides to solve your problem and not bother your peace.

Giving you a quick peck on your forehead, whispering "sleep tight, sweets. I will be right back" to which you mumble random incomprehensible words, which was enough encouragement for him. It doesn't even take him an hour to finish up your work and return to your warm embrace, giving in to his sleep.

"Uhh what did I get paid for?" You question, mostly yourself while checking the text message as you got ready for the day.

"Well i wonder" he stands proudly in front of you grinning widely giving you an answer.

Case 2:

He's crying.

It's one of the days when his thoughts get the better of him, his past comes tumbling down, numbing his senses and leaving him so vulnerable.

He's holding you close, afraid that he'll have to lose you too- maybe that you'll leave him or something else. His past has left a deep wound in his heart that is far from being healed, which reopens from time to time leaving him whimpering and afraid.

You soon wake up to his silent sobs, his chest heaving, and his soft sniffs. It doesn't take you long to come to your senses and realize he's probably having an anxiety attack. You know what's aching him, he doesn't need to tell you nor do you need to ask.

You hug him tightly as you gently pat his head. "My love, my Satoru. I'm here alright? You'll be fine. We will be fine okay, love?" you try your best to comfort him, reminding him to regulate his breathing as you wipe his tears, and thankfully it seems to be working.

"P-please... Don't leave me" Satoru pleads, sounding so pained and broken. You feel your heart shatter at his words.

"Always my love, I'll always be with you" You assure him, cupping his cheeks as he rests his forehead against yours, closing his eyes while holding you tightly as he falls asleep.

To be a pain.

Exhibit A.

Another emergency being, him having a stupid question at 3 fucking 48 in the morning.

"babe babe as curses are developing they will start crushing too?" "Do you think Sukuna ever gets lonely? Nah maybe not hes a loser" "Babe will you love me if i was a worm?" "I had a dream of you!!! Did you dream about me too?" He shakes you awake, looking at you with his bright cerulean curious eyes.

"Gojo Satoru are you serious?!"

"My name is not Gojo Satoru, my name is, my love or something like that but not gojo. But what do you think about the question!!!!!!"

Exhibit B.

He has returned from a week-long mission at 4am and of course he wakes you up with a loud announcement of his arrival before he rushes into your shared bedroom, discarding his blindfolds somewhere. The door hits the wall with a loud bang while his throws himself on top of you crushing you with his weight.

"I'm love-starved" He explains cupping your cheeks, frowning and pouting slightly, his eyes a little watery. Enjoying your every movement and grunt that spill past your lips as you try to make space for yourself. Witnessing your beauty makes him realize how much he missed you as he cages with a tight hug.

Exhibit C:

"Rise and shineeeeeee" He declares as he slides the curtains aside causing you to wake up whining.

"Glad you woke up! I need my morning kiss now" He returns to you demanding a morning kiss just to be thrown off the bed when he comes close to you before you rush to the bathroom to get ready.

Oh, how he loves teasing you and annoying you. Knowing you won't even say a word before brushing and getting rid of that morning breath he could care less about.

The start of all my character creations... Well i draw characters ever since my baby hands could hold a pencil 😌

For character inspiration... I tend to observe people and basically everything around me all the time. The purpose of it is to gain inspiration oe to understand light or anatomy but we pass these right now. Everything i see, i hear or i touch are all inspiration for me.

This one below was inspired by some random mint colored stabilo marker.

If you're talking about my g/t characters, well I've been into g/t my whole life as far as i can remember... I guess it might've begun when i found the old Beetlejuice dvd in a drawer and kept staring at it and asking my mother about it but she'd tell me that the movie isn't suitable for my age yet because i was like 4.

When i finally watched the movie I remeber being dissapointed because there was no giants or little people... Or i think there wasn't. I haven't seen the movie ever since.

Oh! Don't forget the Gulliver's travels cover. When i didn't know how to read i'd also stare at the cover. It MIGHT be the first no-picture book I've read but I'm not sure.

I always maladaptive-daydreamed (and still daydream) about giants. I had a fairy imaginary friend in kindergarten which i introduced to all my friends but it was... Weird because they couldn't see her.

Then one day my cousin –She's Ghibli fan since birth i guess– decided to put on The Secret World of Arietty and i was just AMAZED and thought about the movie for days.

Then i watched Jack Black's Gulliver's Travels. I'm not sure if i seen this or arietty first but i think arietty was the first one. I remember searching the books name on google to see if there was any movies. It's fun because people know jack from School of Rock or like... Minecraft now? I just knew him from Gulliver's travels. I of course enjoyed the movie then but now uhh.............. 🥰🥰🥰 (Though i still go back to it for the gt sometimes)

Mollie's inspiration was... Me...... She was a self insert when i first made her yyyeeeears ago. It was in some summer break when i was bored and decided to write a book just for myself only to read it later on. It was shit as you can guess 💀

But over time she involved into her own self. She is far from a self insert anymore even though we share similarities.

For Roy... There are a lot of people from movies.

And again, everything i see in real life including myself, my father, my aunt, my uncle. Everyone I'm close with and not... And Jazz 😌

Yeah i mean i think you can count all of these as inspiration? I always made characters and designed and drew them all my life but i don't use much except for Roy and Mollie. And a few others.

I love both of your comics! I've also be listening to your podcast over the past couple of weeks. I just wanted to know what your characters' favorite books are and what books/manga might have inspired either the story or artstyle.

uhh lets see... I'm gonna be honest here, I'm not hugely literate these days, as in a don't read a lot of books or comics cuz working on two webcomics (three comics rn if we count Creaky in progress haha) and the podcast eats up most of my time, and I can't say that I've thought that much about what my characters like, in the sense they would probably like what I like haha, I know i usually have a more in depth answer for this. I think Maddie is the only one who would actively read books and manga. I think Rose would read a lot of poetry like frost and Dickinson. Avery reads dime store westerns and adventure novels. These are the ones I've thought about. John doesn't read but he likes horrors on tape. I also don't know much about manga at all, i've never really read any so unforch I can't give you an answer there but i did read a lot of comics, dunno if thats actually kinda the same thing. But i'll give you a run down of what i like and what art and stuff inspired my style so here we go.

I enjoy horror like Richard Matheson, Stephen King for the silly horror factor. I grew up reading stuff by Michael Crichton (Andromeda Strain, Sphere, Jurassic Park) and medical murder mysteries for some reason by Robin Cook (Coma, Night Shift, Outbreak.) I also really like YA, just anything really, quick and cozy reads about romance. NGL thats probably why I write cozy but dreadful horror. A weird combination of my interests ahah.

As far as art goes, I started drawing and writing in the late 80's and 90's, my dad was an artist and comic collector, we would go on trips to find things I was interested in before he got sick. Comics that inspired my art style: Tank Girl The Collection: Beautioned Up The Reckoner! (1995) specifically. Gen 13 comics in the 90's. James O'Barr's Crow comics and anthologies 1989. The MAXX by Sam Keith 1993. I also was HUGE into movies, I basically would rent 3 or 4 vhs tapes and just lose myself in them over the weekend, watching the same film 3 or 4 times. Seemingly Dark is a combination of my own life events (disappearing cross country and starting a new life one day at random, illness, death, depression, finding myself and my family etc) and things i read or saw that I coulnd't even pinpoint if I wanted too haha! Mil-Liminal is and offshoot of that but a way to explore my romantic life and gender identity. I havent actually listened to many podcasts or anything, the premise was inspired by a tumblr post actually, about how the people who work in liminal spaces arent really liminal themselves cuz they aren't passing through. And I was thinking, what if they WERE the liminal part of it. They dont feel it, cuz they are part of it. Plus I worked a night shift job off and on for about 11 years and that'll REALLY inspire you haha. And then just that and a combination of every movie I saw 25 years ago.

This was a terrible answer probably, but hopefully you got something out of that and hopefully theres folks who are as old as me and remember some of those things.

ur welcome anon,,, if i'm being honest, this was almost about to be a daily pepsicola acc bc at the time i really liked that ship, but i chickened out at the last second !! and actually, i'm kind of glad that i did. i found so much people who liked jaderose just as much as i did, and people who think they deserve so much better.

yeah, so in my head velvette was the first to initiate anything and at first carmilla was like “ha! no way, you stupid girl” but then she started to think more and more about velvette as the time went on and one day she just got along the fact that she might be attracted to the young overlord and somehow… went with it? like she didn’t make a big deal out of it… but velvette definitely did, despite the fact she was actually the first one to say or act on her attraction in any way.

IM IN LOVE" and they hang round Then at some point detective discovers she used to work with a murderer or smth (she wasnt rlly having a good time working for him) They have a fight they go to arrest him whilst still bein mad (detective mad, pink sad) Pink takes a bullet for detective that the guy shot, detective shoots him, pink hair runs in a slight panic on the roof to hang aroujd bcs irrational and adrenaline, detective finds her they talk it out with pink bein like "why are u here i fucked it up" and det is like" I LOVE YOU YOU GOOF" and bam. lesbians

Story:

Rex is monster's older birth brother who's uhh how can explain almost has the same mental as jett from @weirdsillycreature if I have to explain him in short words, the mostly different is his parents are alive and he's not so works in a laboratory or locked in a mental hospital with a middle age looking guy who lost his wife that thinking they can heal him but failed miserably lol, rex's where never believed by anyone that he can heal, no one believes that he can be a mental man ever so they just left him in a STABLE mental hospital, he were allowed to go outside the hospital and contact with people because he were mostly a creep for people and only a danger to people he doesn't like, monster had so much faith in him because he believes that he can be healed if she trys and it actually almost worked, but sadly due to monster's family abandoned her and her brother on a thanksgiving morning, leaving them home all alone, they force monster to go to another family and leave her brother at the hospital that were close to their home like 4 blocks away, monster's new home were too far from her old neighborhood but at least she met lim at her new home and protect him in all cause, due to all the chaos and moving happening, rex didn't really handled not seeing her and home missing out of nowhere, ever since then, there's no clue where he is, the doctor's thoughts are him trying to find his sister and as everyone believe he'll die insane, they just let him run away and not even mind looking for him

Ps. That's kinda explains why monster have faith in jett and fall for him more than usual, she just want to keep him safe and in health like how she kept her brother safe and healthy, that's also why she believes that every unstable person can be stabled if they find the right person/friend/etc

WIP Questionnaire

Thank you kindly for the Tag, @theprissythumbelina !

1. What is the first part of your WIP that you created?

Well, the Setting, probably, which as an answer works for just about any of the WIPs I could name. In theory you could argue Gustav and the Magician, individually and as a 'set' of sorts, technically predate my coming up with the 12 Worlds, but the form they took then has only passing resemblance to their current incarnation.

2. If your story was a TV show, what would the theme song/intro be?

Ooo, well, I've been thinking I'd probably see about getting something original made, or making something myself as a side thing. I mean, I kinda envision a lot of my WIPs as serial animations in my head anyhow, so I've put more thought into this question than reality is ever likely to require.

3. What are your favorite characters that you made? Why?

Well... You know how big this list could be. I love all of them, and at any moment which forces / allows me to dig deeper into any single one of them makes me love them even more. Still, my final choice is an obvious one: Gustav Johann Schmidt, who's been in it since the very start, and who's voice has by now almost become my own whenever he comments on some facet of his world in the same way I would.

4. What other pieces of media do you think your fan base would share?

Hmm, well, I've always thought this would go down two tracks. First of all being the classic 'Techno Thriller' crowd, the sorts who like tanks going boom and spies under deep cover: I'd go with things like The Hunt For Red October and Red Storm Rising, both being stalwarts of the genre which have absolutely been personally inspiring. The second track goes down the wider book / writing community, or at least those looking for 'genre fiction' and all that, who might discover the 12 Worlds more on its fantastical or worldbuilding grounds than for its techno thriller nature: I don't really 'understand' what I'd mean by this cohort myself as much, but I guess it could include series like ASOIAF, possibly.

5. What has been your biggest struggle with your WIP?

Well... If we're speaking in the past tense, as far as things that have already happened go I'd put forwards "making sure the worldbuilding exists and isn't utterly contradictory", since there's too little writing down so far to count for a big struggle. Dates are hard, and measuring things on the order of decades to a century leaves me with a lot of uncomfortable dead space on one hand, and a bunch of events clustered together on the other. Untangling this has to happen before the writing does, to me, and it's gonna be hellish.

6. Are there any animals in your story? Talk about them!

Uhh... Technically, Snake In The Sandbox (Gustav's third and least brought up WIP) features two animals! One's a snake which literally scares G's shirt off when he finds it in his tent, and the other's some sort of desert lizard the 18th Corps adopts as its mascot.

7. How do your characters get around? (Ex. Trains, horses, cars, dragons, etc.)

Oh, probably their respective combat vehicles more than anything, though long distance stuff gets done by plane / aeroship, and getting between Worlds means ships for everyone. Non military types might get their own car, or plane.

8. What part of your WIP are you working on right now?

Technically brought this up already, but the answer's worldbuilding. It's always worldbuilding. Though within that category, I'm technically supposed to be writing up a piece on the UC' policy towards Goilac / Nouvoulouis pre SSAW, but... I have been having a lazy weekend.

9. What aspects (tropes, maybe) of your WIP do you think will draw people in?

Big flashy boom booms and cunning military tactics, strategy, and leadership on the one hand for sure, but I'd like to think the depth, history, and life that exists within the 12 Worlds might have some appeal to readers.

10. What are your hopes for your WIP?

Published novel, or really a few considering how many there are already for the 12 Worlds. Then... Well, I think I've got a few ideas in me for the Setting yet.
