There appears to be no end to the layers in The Rings of Power.

I began as an extremely casual fan, having never read any of the books before watching the show; but I had the same childhood association with the trilogy that so many others have. I live with my more well-read sister, who highly anticipated the series. She followed every release of promotional material, and would occasionally share stills and trailers with me, or give me brief descriptions of characters I did not know (such as Finrod, Gil-galad, Míriel, etc.).

When the soundtrack was released, what began as a relaxing day of listening to two and a half hours of new music, turned into an intense analysis of all of the motifs and cues, and how they related to the track titles and characters. Many things I found interesting, but I would like to say (for the record) that my sister and I were suspicious of Halbrand on this day, albeit mostly in jest. That being said…

I knew that the identity of Sauron was a mystery, but being the most casual viewer, the possibility of Sauron being an already-named character never even crossed my mind. Therefore, the line, Looks can be deceiving, did not sound many alarms. I just thought it was a way to tell the audience to be on guard. (In retrospect, I do not know why I had not connected the dots sooner.)

Therefore, it was not until after we watched the first two episodes, that I thought, Wait. This is much more interesting than I had anticipated. We thoroughly enjoyed the episodes, and came home from the theater with only good feelings, anticipating the introduction of Númenor. My sister had a few hours to ponder upon the things we had seen, and I was about to fall asleep when she walked into the room, almost in shock, and said: “Fig, I think Halbrand might be Sauron.” The next two hours of conversation consisted of careful consideration and reflection, floating atop rapids of excitement and screaming. Why was he dodging all of her questions? we thought. Oh, how interesting it would be, to humanize SAURON, and show this background with Galadriel! My sister told me what it says in Unfinished Tales.

“[Sauron] perceived at once that Galadriel would be his chief adversary and obstacle […]”

Then, we theorized that one of Halbrand’s remarks was an indication that he had already perceived this very thing:

“You didn’t cause my suffering and you can’t fix it, no matter how strong your will or your pride. So, let it lie.”

The subtlety was, to us, very intriguing.

However, that candle had a short wick, for we heeded the counter arguments on the internet, and convinced ourselves that Halbrand was not Sauron himself, but rather a man with a dark past and tragic ending, perhaps in consequence of what his ancestors once did (and believe you me, we pulled many muscles stretching so far). Having been attached to Halbrand, therefore, the following exchange warranted from us intense anguish, more careful consideration and reflection, and even more screaming:

Celebrimbor: “Who’s there? Reveal yourself!”

Halbrand: “Is Galadriel here?”

The finale had such an effect [on me, specifically] that night, I stayed up until 7:00 in the morning, recalling all of the signs, parallels, and connections that we voluntarily overlooked.

I have made several attempts to outline all of the connections that I could possibly think of (i.e. by video edits, an essay, and other methods). The first was creating a little Google Slides presentation (initially for my sister and me), believing I would finish it within the week.

Meanwhile, here we are, three months later. These means alone did not seem sufficient enough to contain everything. The further I delved into the material, the more I found, and things opened up. It did not take long before I was under the necessity of splitting the presentation into two parts, and it amounted to almost 350 slides, total. I have spent every day since the finale attempting to reach the bottom of the barrel, to no avail. Will we reach an end before the release of season 2? Only time will tell.

This is not surface-level storytelling. For example, in The Rings of Power Podcast, Felicia Day asked if the eruption of Mound Doom was Adar’s plan. Patrick McKay said that it was actually Sauron’s plan that Adar used for his own purposes, and after explaining a little bit of reasoning and backstory (which we shall address later), he says:

"That’s the kind of layered lore that we’re trying to build into it, and hopefully, maybe if you really do the deep, deep, deep dive, you can pick up on all those things. And if you don’t, that’s okay, too." Patrick McKay, The Rings of Power Podcast 1×06

NO NEED TO TELL ME TWICE.

Elsewhere, speaking about the reveal of Sauron, Patrick explains:

"We’re really not all about playing games with the audience. I know there were definitely some folks who were like, ‘When are we going to get an answer to these questions?’ But […] it’s right there all along! […] We’re much more interested in the character dynamic between, in this case, a character who turns out to be Sauron, and our heroine. That’s the story! What his name is, is not important. What’s important is: Moment to moment, what is he struggling with? What is she struggling with? What is the friendship that they’re developing […] and how is that changing each of them?" Patrick McKay, The Ringer Verse Podcast

This endeavor began with exclusively focusing on Sauron, but I have learned that 1) he seems to be connected to every single character in the show (in other words, he and/or his influence is everywhere), and 2) each character is so incredibly crucial to the plot, it blows my mind. Therefore, as a consequence of analyzing everything related to Sauron, not a single character will go unnoticed.

The purpose of this blog is not only to give me a place to compile my thoughts, but to show that with the amount of work and dedication devoted to this series, it would be a shame to overlook anything, or to throw up our hands and say, “Well, I guess this thing doesn’t make sense.” The showrunners and everyone else involved know much more than I, so I assume where there are questions, there are answers.

I readily admit that I may be dead wrong about some things. That being said, this series is what caused me to pick up the books for once, and has only enhanced what experience I might have had before. The show already made sense to me when I knew zero (0) things about the lore, but the more I read the books, the more sense the show makes! I hope I am not the only one who is having this much fun.

If a single soul happens to read this one day, I hope you will bear with me as I freely brainstorm. I leave you with a quote from Galadriel, as it applies to myself. I’ll proceed with caution when offering predictions or theories, and will do my best to provide concrete evidence. Thus, a disclaimer:

213341 Art Studio IIIA ⋆ Week 1 - Project Outline

Semester one was my space to toy around with facets of the artform, presenting methodology first, contextualization taking a backseat to the abstract. This semester will see me place deeper intent within this process but retaining the creative actions of sample ‘plundering’ as my avenue for messaging.

In the first semester of 2023, a perverse interest into the oversaturated visual culture of YouTube ‘thumbnails’ leant itself to a series of satirical response pieces, which soon transitioned into a general commentary on modernised visual culture by the second semester. The culmination of this was in the BRAZEN FUCK OBJECT (and children), a lumpy, three-legged sculptural beast of cardboard, spotted mass; a texturally overwhelming amalgamation of all things accelerated and visual – warped beyond recognition into an alien presence.

My work this year, while taking a step back from the distinctly visual – spiritually picks up where the concept was left off, now borrowing from, and rearranging the ever-growing expanses of man-made sound into something of a shattered, mosaic replica. Much the same in the world of music as with visual culture, the accelerating catalogue of past creation poses new challenges for the future. Specific movements are harder to pin down, motives see a greater focus on profitability than practicality, speed and quantity are key to material success. The capitalistic, slow death of the artisan permeates both years of study as such, and much as stripping away and re-meshing visible pieces of online culture bore a dystopian parody of what seems to come, to undergo a similar conceptual action in the collage of music is to bear fruit of similar flavor.

Last semester saw me tucked away at home, accessibly experimenting within the limited capabilities of a YouTube player and Audacity, a free sound-editing software. A CD player paired with bargain-bin CDs put the actions of transforming source material to the forefront. However, the overarching intention was to utilize what I aimed to be the workhorse of this year’s projects – a vintage Boss SP-202 sampler, purchased from eBay back in February. While a small, ‘lo-fi’ piece of machinery, it brings with it a method of creating deeply rooted into the mana and artistic history of plunderphonics. As much a plaything as an instrument, my (later than expected) use of the machine was a step outside my comfort zone, but the break has given me some time to familiarize myself; to which I’ll be making much greater use of it throughout this semester.

With the actions of sampling established, from here I can use sampling as a tool for remembrance, reconstruction, and illustration. Being from 1998, the SP-202 has 2MB of internal memory. But what I can evoke from using it fits on so much more.

With the imperative to find a group for an eventual joint exhibition later-on, fellow artists Olivia, Ruby and Steevee were on radar, with our works each following a method-focused, anectodally-driven interpretation of past media.

Anya was initially in our group too, but split off not long after.

We jointly created a group chat, as well as a Google Slides document for compiling notes. This was my moodboard going in:

From left to right, these interests are: My SP-202 sampler, a materially stripped-back approach to making (exemplified by Alan Vega from the band Suicide), Age of Empires - a game I have fond childhood memories for, the concept of nostalgia (or generally making fun of it), the album Replica by Oneohtrix Point Never, and Super Mario 64. More on that.

Over the past two months, I’ve had rough plans (and a little bit of working) towards a sample-based album entirely composed of audio taken from Super Mario 64.

When it comes to online sentiments, nostalgia is a driving factor to defining the now; and the associations of a ‘then’ manifest in cultural snippets (samples?), or as is often the case, specific published forms of media seeing a resurgence through childhood re-ignition.

This can be a means towards many things - a sentimental return to an old enjoyment, a reconnection with a newfound audience to share it with, and new media produced in admiration of such.

It makes money, too. Pokemon and McDonald’s as brands are fully immersed in the value that nostalgia plays in securing a loyal audience, with the latter being a chilling example of how brand recognition can be ensnared in those valuable childhood experiences, to where you’ve guaranteed lifelong loyalty from the customer.

Video games are just one of many, many avenues for nostalgia to run free among a user base, in this case, perhaps a little more prone to bigotry. Indeed a familiar anecdote found in fan base communities of the ‘old being better than the new’ can turn concerning when faced with any degree of social progress within and around the game since.

Super Mario 64, like numerous other ‘childhood greats’ in the video game sphere, saw a return to popularity in the late 2010s, its every element picked apart by a now-adult audience, keen to re-immerse into naive wonder.

I’m no different, my work leans into the growing concept of ‘liminality’ (concurrent with a return to remembered spaces of any kind). The game was released seven years before I was even born, and it’d be another nine until I would play it. Well, the 2004 remake, that was, but I begged my parents for the Nintendo 64 console so I could play the original. It never happened, but for a while I made sure I learned as much as I possibly could about it. To this day I’ve never played the original, and any nostalgia I have is as an outsider, absorbing an experience second-hand from YouTube gameplays.

Perhaps this distance contributes to a somewhat aloof sound I’ve adopted in the audio portions I’ve pieced together so far, and of a general message to ‘go outside’. Now that I find myself in a group exploring similar concepts, I’m presented with the opportunity to resume work on the project, now with the grounding of research, plenty of written references, and bouncing off the exhibiting ideas of the others in the group.

The SP202 - a self-proclaimed sampling ‘workhorse’ for last semester’s work (which in fact only saw limited use from May onwards) will be returning, now with extra practice and me NOT nearly burning the house down with an incorrect adaptor. The Plunderphonical Chronicle will also return, picking up right where I left off, with the late 90s-present still yet to be covered. Stay tuned!

I surprisingly had less time over the 'holidays' to work on my music than I do in Semester 2, but what I was able to make, mainly came from sessions with Audacity, as well as the SP-202.

The goal was clear, to compose ENTIRELY from music samples, with not a finger to a keyboard note. Note the lack of a detailed categorization with these, I have no idea in which order I made them...

My pride and joy from these sessions would have to be "GETUP", a 1-minute house loop that uses 7 samples and took 2 hours to make!!

Week 11 - Unity script writing and visual summary

Current status: deliver

This week I focused on trying to get my unity project to actually function but I have been facing some problems with the script once again. Throughout the week I went through writing the script and resolving any appearing error codes to the best of my abilities.

Bellow is a function whiteboard script. The script I am struggling with is for the pen/marker that is used to draw on the white board.

I have been searching about the error codes on Unity's official forums and other forums that address the error codes. The error codes are easy to fix to more experienced users of unity and c sharp. But since I'm not familiar with this I am struggling a little bit.

I have been struggling with this error code. I Have tried to resolve it myself using Google and Unity forums and any other resources at my disposal to try and do it myself but to no success. I've decided to seek help from my stream leader and peers for advice and many directed me to someone who could help from the empathic computing lab. I've emailed them but have yet to receive a reply. Two of my peers have offered their help and I have tried their solutions.

Here is a screenshot of trying a suggestion from my peer. While It did resolve the previous code error, three new errors appeared. Which I have to solve with some success.

I have some understanding of which line the error occurs in and the hints of ")" or "}" or ";" expected is what is missing but attempts to fix it sometimes comes up with more errors. Currently all I can do is to continue trying while I wait for a response to my email. I have two back up plans for if I don't get a reply soon enough. First one is two download the script available from the tutorial video I was learning from or have my prototype just be my VR environment with a non-functioning whiteboard.

I am mostly finish with my VR project as the environment is mostly finished and all that's left is for me to get my VR whiteboard functioning. Others things I need to get done is my visual summary, pitch presentation and video. Video won't take long for me to do and I could probably start putting it together. Pitch presentation will probably be made using some previously presentation slide from earlier on this semester. And visual summary is a slow process where its just me compiling everything from my Miro neatly to fit a visual summary for hand in.

I really need to get a move on and push through the next couple of weeks.

Friendly reminder that 8flix isn't a massive corporation, it's literally just the one dude maintaining the archive as an educational resource. So him engaging with a fanbase that has shown immense interest in his archive is a really good way to keep up the donations that fund it and to expose more people to the existence of this kind of resource. I am pretty firmly of the opinion that the tweets aren't trying to pull a fast one on you.

So thanks Nick, it's very cool of you to take an interest in this little corner of the fanbase!

I think one of the biggest signs that people do not understand why byler is as popular as it is is when they say "Will deserves a better boyfriend thought :/" ..... Like If I were to say "El deserves better than Mike......I think she should get with Lucas" the angry m*leven shippers would literally eat me alive because those two ships aren't even remotely close to being the same thing.

Do they think we literally just ship Mike and Will because they're both dudes?? Why did I add a question mark to that when I know that is exactly what people think. Y'know because despite not all straight relationships being basically the same thing because different characters have different relationships and dynamics with other characters.....any ship that is gay is basically interchangeable and the people involved don't matter at all -_-

Mike and Will are two characters with a lot of history and their friendship is a major motivating factor for both of them throughout the whole show. They're two insecure kids that trust each other enough to let their walls down, something which we routinely see them try to avoid with other people.... People ship Mike and Will because they're Mike and Will, and implying that replacing one half of the relationship with a minor character that serves basically no other role in the story should be viewed as an improvement is infuriating.

Season 3 on the surface: Mike being so in love with El that he acts like an asshole to everyone else and this is never really resolved.

Season 3 cinematography and subtext: Just the creators banging two pans together and yelling "Mike's gay and in love with Will" while progressively getting louder and louder as the season goes on.

Think it’s really interesting how they took the time to both establish that Vickie is not straight and suggest she reciprocates Robin’s feelings while also making sure the audience knows she has a boyfriend and literally have Steve comment about how it doesn’t make sense.

The show literally goes out of it’s way to have the actual characters pick up on hints that Vickie is not straight and is constantly using film techniques to make sure we as an audience understand that. The show emphasizes that someone dating the opposite sex does not make them straight, and has multiple shots with Vickie and Robin parallel byler scenes this season…..

They literally spelled it out for us I don’t know what else to say

Oh that’s hot, too and I’m on board. I probably have 😭😭 but it’s a fantastic au, so I love it when ppl wanna talk about it. Some quick ideas for both that have been in my rotation lately

Some cocky new resident bursts through the doors to the office space where you, Levi, your residents, and a few co-workers typically reside, frantic, and demanding to speak to Dr. Ackerman. Levi only looks up from his notebook with a blank expression in his eyes to question, “Which one?” All of the kid’s confidence wavers, “Um... aren’t you Dr. Ackerman, sir?” Levi only shrugs, and points a weighted pen in the student’s direction, to an office door barely open wide enough to see a sliver of your profile as you type away on your computer, “Yes, I am, but so is she.”

You should have known better, or at least been a little more thorough—for someone completing their MD-PhD, you’d think you’d do a quick Google search on the guy you’re seeing at least once to see if anything important pops up—because Jaeger really isn’t that common of a last name. Because not only is your boyfriend of nearly a year the younger brother your least favorite TA/supervisor, he’s also the son of the medical director of the hospital you’ll be working at next semester; and word on the street is Dr. Carla Jaeger doesn’t take lightly to her baby getting hurt.

After taking residences in facilities nearly four thousand miles apart, Jean couldn’t care less about being a fully fledged doctor—the only thing on his mind is getting home to you, and never leaving. So, when he finally gets to your place, there’s not a single doubt in his mind when he drops his bags, cups your face between your hands, and asks you to move in with him.

Connie really needs to stop calling you down to his office for “urgent” matters concerning the x-rays and images of your patients, when his only urgent concern is that he misses you. And that the x-ray table was freshly sterilized, so if you wanna... relieve some stress, he knows a place.

Mikasa always had a soft spot for kids, and at one point considered pediatrics as a specialty. Even though she went down another route, she’s reminded of her love for children when Sasha asks for her to cover at her clinic for last few hours of the day. It reminds her that while doesn’t regret her speciality, but she does envy Sasha sometimes. So much so, that when she comes home to you later that evening, she can’t stop herself before she blurts out, “What do you think about adopting a kid?”

And for the professor/university side of things:

Hange can’t help but cackle in the corner of the classroom as Levi’s student finish their presentation—a fourty-four slide powerpoint defending their belief that you and him are 100% dating—because while they compiled some pretty convincing arguments, Hange thinks it’s hilarious because Levi’s only reply is, “We’re very close with each other, as roommates should be.”

You and Levi have a very special end-of-semester ritual. After all the exams and final papers and projects have been turned in, you like to sit on the touch with a glass of wine, and look through your course evaluations together; and they’re anonymous, but you two like to place bets on which students wrote which review. Most are positive, and you think it’s funny that 90% of Levi’s follow the general vibe of “Prof Ackerman is kind of cold-hearted on the outside and not an easy grader but he’s a good teacher.”

Beat x Nagi masterpost

Apparently I’m the only person on this Earth who ships them so I’ll have to pull the heavy weights I’m afraid. So much like Nagi pulling up her 30 google slides presentation on EleStra, I will rant about their chemistry and provide plenty of screenshots that had me nyoom to grab my shipping goggles

This will be an analysis-essay about why I think they’re great for each other, and then the more I make posts compiling their interactions together or other headcanons etc, I’ll add the link on here!

Hmm… Daisusui? Nagibeat? Nagito?... Well I know how they would call their kid now

Tldr: it’s the adhd x autism duo, the wholesome understanding supportive couple, the “sometimes you can be intense about what you like but I mean, same”, it’s the difference in speech yet how well they meet with each other, how they can be each other’s anchor, it’s the aesthetic, it’s the character arcs!! Nagi learning to both move away from her fictional crush and getting less scared of socializing with others, finding love in a “creature of the light”, meanwhile Beat finding vulnerability and not having to be the strong one that has his shit together, settling down a bit and finding someone that understands and supports him unconditionally while still grounding him with sound and blunt advice. If Beat is the dad of the group, Nagi is def the mom of the group ( figuratively ofc). Ok anyways let’s actually get into it-

Let’s first talk about Nagi’s chemistry with other characters:

(Keep in mind I’m not advocating against or for any of these ships, and the 4 years age gap with some of these isn’t smth I support, I’m doing these to showcase why me shipping Beat and Nagi isn’t just because they fit some bare minimum standards, that it’s something which not only has a basis on their interactions with each other but also with everyone’s. Character analysis babyyy. Skip if you’re not interested, but my goal isn’t ship bashing, I also don’t force my interpretation as the supreme right one ofc. Consider this me laying groundwork for the actual ship talking)Her crush on Sho is literally just because he looks like Tomonami and she becomes disillusioned after he abandons them. But, it is pointed out that even while being far from Tomonami’s general attitude, Nagi doesn’t dislike Sho’s passoniate demeanor, which is something pointed out in-game that Sho shares with Beat.

Even so, in my opinion it is good that Nagi’s love interest isn’t too similar to Tomonami, if similar at all. Not only would always comparing the two be unhealthy for Nagi and her relationship with any lover, but letting go of idealized expectations for a partner would be good for her imo. He might not be lord Tomonami, but if they get along together well and they’re good together then that’s more than enough. This is not to say I dislike Sho x Nagi, I do like the autism duo and it’d be good for Sho and he’d certainly be entertaining to her at the very least, but yeah there just isn’t a strong base for it besides her misplaced delusional attachment. Honestly having only played the first 2 days for a while because of the demo, I was convinced Nagi was Swallow and I shipped her with Rindo a bit, but after playing a lot more days... Yeahh they don’t really have anything interesting going on chemistry wise. She doesn’t idolize Rindo like with Sho, but she does think highly of him and always speaks of him highly as such, unlike with the others in the group. Even so, Rindo wouldn’t really bring anything for Nagi in a relationship, while being another introvert who could be chill with her, he often lacks values like understanding or good faith which would make them clash were they to be in a relationship together imo. Similarly, Nagi doesn’t share Rindo’s interests and she wouldn’t want the same activities or life goals in general, it wouldn’t work out well. She offers him good advice and support, but besides friendship there’s nothing to give from him, they just don’t have personalities that fit in that way. Which sucks because the hyper unhinged otaku x the straight man is such a fun ship in theory. She brings observation skills to the table and can help ground him when he gets overworked, but that’s about it, best left as a platonic support. I don’t dislike Fret with Nagi tbh, but there are many reasons I think Beat would be better for her. Firstly, age, yeahhh 19 and 15 is... Iffy at best for sure, but I do encourage nuance when discussing such age gaps; the framing of the game and the way they interact with each other doesn’t showcase any sort of power imbalance (except for the first murder ig lol). BUT since the game doesn’t exist in a vacuum, the fact that Beat and Nagi only have 1 year of difference does make a big difference, they’re in a much closer place in life and can proceed together being more on the same wavelenght and maturity level as well. And like I said earlier, I’m doing these more on a hypothetical where age doesn’t matter/focusing on dynamics only to break down some aspects of their characters more than anything else lol. Beyond that, what Beat brings to the table I’ll bring up shortly, but while Fret and Nagi have a nice arc together and they do build up understanding and support for each other. Unlike Beat who has an unshakeable layer of authenticity, honesty, openness and genuineness, Fret is more guarded, more willing to twist his feelings and truths with words for his benefit or persona, which is something that Nagi and autistics in general are known to dislike and be exhausted by: social mind games. He’s still understanding/observant which would be important in a relationship with Nagi imo, he could be the extrovert social cues master to her socially awkward introvert, and overall they would be great together romantically. But ultimately, Fret’s life dreams don’t align so well with Nagi’s, and while they could remain great friends for a long time I think they’d drift apart eventually. When thinking of them as a couple I kinda just think casual and puppylove relationship, which is cute for like, being in college together and whatnot but it’d get kinda stale the more they go on together. Cute for a few one shots or slow burn, meh as an OTP (imo), better as friends. Shoka… They wouldn’t be good for each other romantically. Listen, I adore them as a brotp, they’re GREAT, even cute as an aesthetic ship!! Platonically, they could really help bring the other out of their comfort zone and introduce the other to things they would have never expected to enjoy. They’d have an interesting dynamic and could become great friends that hang out together, but romantically...? Shoka is too sarcastic and cutting, and Nagi would be too highstrung and laser focused on some things instead of taking in the bigger picture in her opinion.

Now, Beat’s chemistry with other characters:

Rindo is very brotherly-esque imo? Supportive and such, but it’s very much in a looking after Rindo way, Rindo similarly sees Beat as a pillar of strenght that often gives him the confidence needed to commit to something, but similarly he’s kinda distant on an emotional level to him. He doesn’t really care to connect with him, beat moves too quickly, doesn’t think enough and is best left as an asset and a friend/mentor-ish figure and he has 0 interest in even thinking of being something romantic.

Fret and him have a cute bond over being similarly “act first, think later” social goofballs, like pointed out many times by multiple chars, but they do differ on many points. And again, it’s very shown in a best bro/almost big bro-lil bro way. Again, Beat has kinda taken him under his wing. Again the age difference does show in that way.

Neku, blood brothers, a lot of ppl ship them and ehhh I can see why, honestly I don’t remember the latter parts of the first game too much, but they’re kinda too casual and brotherly in their interactions to make them anything seemingly romantic imo. Not that there’s not fun potential, but for me it doesn’t do it. In Neo Neku is sorta a gary stu (which I don’t say negatively, mind you) but his shit is too pulled together, it can be kinda cute in contrast to Beat, but overall it’s kinda bland for me. Similarly, Beat’s relationship with Sho is kinda interesting, but ultimately they just don’t understand each other and have no desire to do so. What I like more with Neku and Sho is that Beat’s dynamic with them is less mentor-ish with the other looking up to him, it puts them on equal footing etc etc.

His interactions with Shoka are admittedly very fun, but again the age diff does affect them imo. He’s protective of her in the same way he is with everyone, but doesn’t know them enough/is a bit too emotionally distant to have significant attachment not born out of circumstances. Her sarcasm also doesn’t land well with his too-honest blunt easygoing attitude imo, he’d misunderstand her or she’d kill his vibe lol. But yeah they don’t have much interactions together at all, he understood her grieving, but even that was kinda used to compare him with Nagi iirc. Tbh I don’t remember this part of week 3 all too well

Beat is often either looked up to or looked down on, either the competent strong and knowledgeable group member or the somewhat silly goofy impulsive friend. It’s interesting how Nagi connects with him in a more equal way, that the unexpected maturity makes them chill and plan together while his act first think later loud attitude is complementary with hers in a productive way.

Alright, my musing-rambling is done. Now that we’ve analyzed their relationship with the others a bit…

Le’s get to the meat of the topic, yo

They’re just so complementary, guys.

Understanding, observation and bluntness

Remember when I said understanding would be important in a relationship with Nagi? Beat can be observant, but as a proud non-thinker he isn’t the kind to notice little things most of the time. But what he lacks in the observational department (which Nagi can complement anyways), he does make for in understanding, in empathy and good faith. You’ve got a problem? You’ve said something that ruffled me the wrong way? ‘S all good bro I gotchu, I know you enough to trust you’re not messing with me, wanna talk about it?— Yes, that’s not so true with strangers, who can rile him up really easily to which he’ll react agressively, but as soon as you’re in the pal zone Beat becomes an unconditional supportive presence. His honesty and openness would be such a relief for Nagi, who never has to worry about reading his cues wrong or missing something; when Beat wants to say something, he says it loudly. His authenticity makes it easy for her to feel secure in his presence and her relationship with him, she never has to worry about being thrown a curveball, or discovering Beat finds their conversations boring, or whatever. It is pointed out that Fret and Beat are very similar in many aspects but Nagi treats Beat significantly better, and while I think it’s partly because she wants to keep the status quo of her relationship with Fret more than anything else, and while my shipping goggles tingle at her favorizing Beat, I do think it’s because of that genuineness. Nagi can tell in the looks Fret gets sometimes that he isn’t always being himself or saying what he truly means. When Nagi confronts Rindo and Fret about having a lot of tension together, she gets gaslit by them saying nothing’s wrong while obviously that not being the case. Of course I use gaslit very lightly here, but the fact of the case is that Nagi, as an autistic, struggles to read social situations right and react appropriately to them, we don’t know what to make of social cues but that doesn’t mean we can never pick them up. Not only did Rindo and Fret brush off Nagi’s correct assumption and worries, they dismissed her attempt to solve the problem and have an open conversation about it. But Beat? That dude would adress it, not relent until you aknowledge it too, then attempt to have a productive convo to stop it, yo. Something that not only aligns with Nagi’s manner of dealing with problems, but complements it with confidence that she doesn’t and cannot have. Autistic people will assume wrong sometimes, it’s not an unfounded reservation to have, and while Beat is generally pretty good and mature at reading others’ intentions and mood, Nagi’s rational thinking and coming to objective conclusions can tame down his self-assured confrontational instincts if he does get something wrong, explaining in detail what their true rationale is in the situation, hopefully making Beat understand what he has missed and see the situation in a much more poised light. Again with the complementarization. Grounding

[In which Nagi smirks Beat’s last reply, when she only stared off guardedly before with the rest. I wish I had more screenshots of it, sob...]

Building up on top of that last part, Beat is also grounding for Nagi. Nagi here is expressing how social people who can effortlessly interact with each other alienate her, she feels so separate from them, they’re inattegnable for her, a lone creature of shadows while they have the light. At ease in the spotlight, basking in the light of the sun and thriving. It’s not for a lack of trying, but Beat successfully comforts (and literally grounds) her better than Fret, whose reply goes pretty much fully ignored/dismissed. In a way, Beat missing the subtleties of social hierarchies and refusing to adhere to them is why he’s able to effortlessly put her at ease. Fret does understand what she means on some level and tries to play into her metaphors, but it only strenghtens that yes, they are worlds apart, much different, while Beat simply crushes those frontiers and concretely confronts her with how they see eye to eye just fine and are similar where it matters. I think Beat has adhd tbh like mentioned, Fret is prob neurotypical lol (not Fret slander) or maybe not but you get what I mean I think. Small over-explanation of psychology tangent: Nagi being autistic, it isn’t just low self-esteem or a flawed mentality that explains why she considers herself a “creature of darkness” where others are “creatures of light”, it isn’t just dramatics, it isn’t her sensationalizing everything and wanting to roleplay or self-pity or something. It’s true, it’s real, she really is different, really cannot relate to neurotypicals easily. Has been socially shunned, rejected and bullied in her childhood for sure, more than likely, and has always felt different, like she could never truly fit in. It’s not a struggle that can be friendship-ed away, it’s not a “well you just need to build up confidence or learn social cues and you’ll fit right in!”, it’s literally the shape of her brain. She is different and it is a source of distress for her yes, but she never shuns herself being a creature of shadows, instead she is wary and guarded around creatures of light, probably with good precedents of being mocked and taken advantage of tbh. (She doesn’t notice how Rindo and Fret don’t like her and solely want to use her at first, so I’d say that’s canon). All that to say, when Fret was like “it’s the same world as yours!”, what she heard is a dismissal that those differences exist at all, a dismissal of her experiences and convictions. Fret of course said it in a caring way with good intentions, but for Nagi it was the equivalent of going “You can do it!” at a disabled person who cannot do it and has said as much. Meanwhile Beat goes “idk about you but I live in Shibuya”, not dismissing what she confided about, which in all honesty no matter what level of observant and literal thinking he was here he could never have fully gotten what she meant and her situation even if he attempted, so sometimes aknowledging that you can’t say something for them but not treating them any differently or mocking her for it is the best you can do. Nagi heard that and did not hear her ideologies being dismissed and questioned, but also heard “if you a creature of shadows or not doesn’t matter to me, right now we’re here in the now and I’m not judging you”, and yeah, she’s here, in the now, and ready to move on, hence why the convo stops there.This is what I meant by him being grounding for her, he’s able to talk her into coming back into the spirit of the game, in Shibuya with her friends-acquaintances. They go back to being a merry band. It’s interesting to see that even when Nagi is using words or metaphors that he doesn’t understand, he enthusiastically has her back and understands the basics of it.

Kindred spirits

[She meant "kindred spirits” both at Rindo and Fret, who they watched make up in this scene, and at herself and Beat (which is interesting to note was something she said after the whole creatures of light interaction)...]

Unlike with Fret, who gained her friendship through forced contact and growing more familiar together over the weeks, forming a bond through that, or Rindo who always had some level of her respect since she joined the team and has more or less maintained that and gained some genuine care for him too as they went, Beat and her quickly and naturally formed a bond through understanding, through multiple, multiple interactions. It always kinda feel like Nagi is just waiting to jump into a convo after Beat, that they’re standing next to each other, having the L and R buttons for support to Rindo and Nagi’s x and y. They’re always ready to have each other’s backs and that kind of easygoing atmosphere, non-judgemental zone is something that developped between the two much quicker and stronger than Nagi with the others the way I see it. During the time that the team was only Rindo, Fret, Nagi and Beat, the latter two were always like… The ones trying to smooth things over, kind of the two mature voices of get-along and again, observant. Mostly thinking of them looking at Rindo & Fret patching things up. But yes, they’re both very much in that position of looking after the others and caring in that “I am your senior and more emotionally mature and good at healthy mindsets than you” way, and from Beat’s side moreso on the “I’mma keep the mood high and give everyone self-confidence” as well as just straight up being protective of them from others and about injuries. Keeping the morale high has also been shown to be important to Nagi, as in she took the role upon herself as well. They’re on the same wavelength guyssss

Indeed, Beat and Nagi are in fact shown to be very often on the same page. Not only with their bond strong enough for Nagi to be confident and comfortable enough to want to help him understand what was up with something (curry critic again, alongside so many other trivial examples). She pretty much always has his back, either by agreeing (not cheating on the find the differences game, backing his plans, etc), and kind of completing Beat’s actions and thoughts, like when she explained what Beat meant after a convo the two of them had on their own (hehe look at them having a serious & productive convo <33 Unlike with Fret with who she’d be bickering and Rindo’s who’s always too much in his own head), when Beat ran in a different direction than he claimed and she covered for him. Nagi and Beat very very often enthusiastically agree with each other, and when they don’t they either complement each other with input or talk it out in a productive and mature way!

Raising self-confidence

[Beat’s speech bubble comes after Nagi’s. For below, week 3 has a lot of “Pinny, ya can do this!!” to which she says “yes, sir!” lol. Then after that it’s to show the progression from Nagi being doubtful of their skills in week 2]

I’ve already hinted at it but yes, Nagi definitely complements Beat with her rational laidback thinking, to his more heathed impulsivity. When he’s ready to recklessly jump in, she’s down to Earth and can reign him back. On the other hand, Beat’s confidence often transfers to her, giving her enough assurance to state her opinion or make her feels less anxious! Her anxiety, which is a pretty emphased on part of her character/character arc. The fact that he can ease her anxiety is a huge development, as in, very noteworthy. Also because yeah, Nagi can be pretty not-laidback but when she is it’s usually because either high emotions or anxiety, which as we’ve talked about Beat helps with.

I love how Beat has never ever been shown judging Nagi, he truly is a no-judgement zone. Rindo was pretty convinced Nagi would be a burden more than anything else mostly because of her personality and interests, and even Fret had his doubts and would be a bit judgy of her interests. Beat? Never. Similarly, Nagi calls him a creature of light, “a man of action and no thought” upon introduction, but she’s never shown treating or considering him worse for it. They both truly, genuinely value each other’s strenghts and opinions despite how different they are, no questions asked, unconditionally, and it’s actually so... Pure to see? They’re so nice and wholesome to each other. Nagi does point out Beat’s boisterous attitude often but never makes judgements on him for it or call him out about it, and she doesn’t flinch at his outbursts as much as the others.

They’re not only complementary with multiple differences, they also have plenty of similarities, hence them often agreeing. They both have a proactive rather than passive attitude, which Rindo does not share at all, and Fret who does to some degree but still can be rather hesitant, follows others’ opinions when confronted about pursuing what he thinks is best, and tends to be a bit wishy washy about it. Every character’s confrontational and non-confrontational traits exist on a spectrum, but Beat’s and Nagi’s align on a lot. Another thing I love about this ship is how intense they are, both of them even if in different ways. The way they both scream “after her!!” and “omg Fret you did not just suggest we skip this game of Find the differences” is so funny to me, they have no chill. Nagi definitely seems like she’s much less intense than Beat since she’s not as loud and can be meek on some aspects, but she rants with formal vocabulary on sometimes the smallest thing, let’s not even mention how passionate she is about EleStra, and she often experiences emotions very black and white as well, with her sprite of extreme shock, when she gets very happy and swoons over Minamimoto, etc etc. They’re both confident in their convictions, and both hare willing to fight to the death for them lmaooo. Let’s not forget Nagi literally said she’d risk limb and life to repay Rindo after 3 mins of knowing him. So here they are, both intensely passionate, not judging each other for it in the least and being a grounding & calming presence when needed. Also, I think besides maybe Shoka, Beat is kinda the only one that genuinely wouldn’t listening to her ramble about EleStra, and similarky I think she’d be interested in learning about Beat’s interests.

Ok from here on out it’s mostly me just pointing things out rather than overanalyzing and making thesis statements from them lol

Nagi once asked if Beat got his pin from a love interest out of curiosity. It felt odd to me since it both A)went nowhere and B)Nagi isn’t usually the type to question others’ relationships or focus on romance. Could be a sign that she’s not not interested in Beat, scouting the terrain for courting, jealous, whatever

Beat is kinda protective of Pinny? In a way that wasn’t really shown the same way or to the same intensity as with the others. In a time where they fight terrifying supernatural monsters on the daily, what makes Beat go “omg!!!” face full of worry and lowkey fear, probably rushing to her, is her falling frontward in stairs. Best case scenario he’s hyperaware of her safety and wants her never to get hurt ever, worst case scenario, he cares <3

Also, do y’all remember how Nagi hated name puns and nicknames? Fret immediately started calling her his nagirl (/p) anyways and she showed distate for it, BUT (while it can be just seen as her getting used to nicknames) when Beat starts calling her Pinny she literally never even hints at disliking it or mentioning she doesn’t like nicknames or anything- which makes me aw <3

I’m not even finished with the game… Thid is SO intensely long and doesn’t even cover that much... I plan on making other posts with more screenshots of them, so when I do and when I have more to say or link here, I’ll come back and add it. Hence why I call this a masterpost! Eve’s Characters Names

As some of you may know, a while ago I posted a list of characters names that were known within the Eve community. The list grew more the more time passed and I would occasionally update it and make different posts about it.

I thought it would be best if I compiled all that into one post and it’s finally here!

Every character of every MV can be found here with their respective names, even those who have not been confirmed yet; the reason for this is so you guys can know who has names and who hasn’t. I also took the liberty to write some interesting facts about names or just the overall MV so you can learn a little bit more about them.

This list is still in the works, some info hasn’t been published yet or might be missing, so pls feel free to let me know if you find anything of relevance so I can add it!

This list took me a lot of time to make, I’m not kidding when I say it took almost two months; that’s why I kindly ask for you to be understanding with any mistake I’ve had made.

SWR4-Health2: Sleeping is your POWAH!

"Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise." -Benjamin Franklin.

Sleep is one of the most essential tools of our body. We feel energized, relaxed and prepared for a new day when we are well rested. It is also discouraged to sleep for too long, and to stay up late at night. I'm guilty of staying up late, especially when I got so engrossed with talking with my friends that I don't notice the time anymore. But with my online classes starting, I need to change this habit of staying up late or I'll get into serious trouble with my health.

According to dictionaries, sleep is "a condition of body and mind that typically recurs for several hours every night, in which the nervous system is relatively inactive, the eyes closed, the postural muscles relaxed, and consciousness practically suspended." Why is sleep important and what role does it play in the body?

I have read articles that discuss lots about benefits of sleep, but I'll only share a few points by linking it to personal experience.

Sleep improves productivity and concentration.According to Healthline, sleep is vital for our brain to work well and it increases our focus, cognition, work performance and productivity.I remember a time when I stayed up late for a Google Slides presentation for a certain subject. I only had two hours of sleep, and let's just say I didn't feel good after. I can't help but be confused with my fellows who can stay up late and not feel anything bad.

Sleep reduces your stress.Sleep "helps your mind and body relax and recover from your day." (Stibich, 2021) I admit to being cranky and irritated when I don't get my sleep. I highly advise to getting sleep early. If you struggle to sleep like me, I'll give you my own tips on how to get your sleeping hours in line.

Sleep repairs the body.According to Stibich, this period is when our bodies are working with fixing our damaged cells caused by UV rays, stress, and other exposure that will cause harm to our body. Lots of studies show that appearance is directly proportional to the amount of sleep you get.

But now, the question is: How do we get sleep, especially if we all are used to sleeping later?

Let us all note that lack of sleep imposes harm to our body. Our bodies function well if we are well rested.

To get the right amount of sleep, here is what I do:

NO SOCIAL MEDIA minutes or hours before sleep.I am still working on this aspect. Frankly, whatever I advise or explain here is an irony to what I actually do, and I feel guilty. But, on the brighter side, I do my best to work on this tip.

Calming Music.Since I have trouble sleeping because of social media, I look for calming music or classical music that will induce sleep to me. I recommend listening to 3-hour compilations of classical music; it doesn't only promote sleep, it also makes you feel like you are living in some European era. (Is it just me? Let me know in the comments!)

Read a book.If you own a lot of books and haven't read what's stocked up in your shelf, take this piece of advice. Read something boring; it will bore you and make you sleep, or, read only a few chapters (I recommend taking 2-3 chapters a time), then rest.

Now that we've get this over with, start getting your proper rest, and get that productive soul on!

REQUEST: Birthday - Raihan x Reader One-shot

Pairing: Raihan x Reader

[One shot - more like a Drabble tbh]

It’s your birthday in a few weeks and you noticed Raihan had been acting weird.

Firstly, he started coming home late.

Like really late.

Secondly, he wouldn’t tell you where he went, just that he had ‘something to sort out’.

Third, he began smelling...strange.

Not so much like aromatic perfume, but more of a musky, earth smell.

When you google up the signs, they all seem to point that your boyfriend of several years could be cheating on you.

Raihan would never cheat on me, you find yourself thinking to yourself. He just won’t.

But what was really going on was that Raihan was planning a birthday surprise for you and had spent a long time with the presentation and preparation.

You’d been together for a few years now and every year, he’d gotten you something different.

For the first year, he surprised you with a designer handbag and a luxury weekend getaway but he soon learned that you’re not too intrigued or crazed about labels or enchanting locations but all in all, it was a lovely birthday treat and there were several good memories from that.

For your birthday the next year, he got you a baby Pokemon and whisked you off to Alola for a daring skydiving session over Akala Island.

And the year after that, there was no more beating around the bush and he straight up asked you what wanted and you said you weren’t too fussed because you don’t need Raihan to go all out or take you to such expensive places.

It could be also to do with getting old and being around him for so long that you didn’t have much to look forward to nor did you want anything in particular, you did tell him that you would rather just spend a nice evening with him and have a delicious home cooked, candlelit meal.

However, Raihan’s still determined to treat you so this year too, so he asked the gym leaders what would be a good birthday present for his lover and received mixed results:

Opal told him he should try baking a cake.

Milo told him a Wooloo is the key to a woman’s heart, but you already have one.

Nessa thought a meal at The Captain’s Table would do the trick.

Kabu said a trip to Hoenn would possibly suffice.

Piers also gave him tickets to his concert.

Raihan rubbed his chin, wondering if it was possible to combine all those ideas but then realised it’s better to come up with something far more original and something that would resonate more with you.

Therefore, he found himself sitting down on the grassy pitch of Hammerlocke stadium one day, writing ideas down. He eventually compiled a list and went through it many times, ticking several ideas off. He even resorted to online videos for inspiration.

In the end, he remembered how much you love Goomy and an idea formed in his mind.

Keeping it as a surprise was harder than preparing the actual surprise.

And the more he came home late and the more he gave you excuses as to why he was being so darned secretive, the more he saw your face falling when he would refuse to disclose where he was going, the more it pained him inside.

Finally, on the day of your birthday, you’re first to wake up and although you try to wake him up too, he’s exhausted because he came home so late last night so all you can do is get ready for work, wriggling free from his grip and slipping off the bed.

You silently get dressed albeit watching him worriedly before you head downstairs to make breakfast and as you munch on your cereal, reading this morning’s news on your phone, you hear the steps creaking one by one and soon Raihan appears in the kitchen, rubbing his eyes and yawning.

“Hey babe,” he greets you wearily, shoving his feet into his flip-flops and making his way to the sink where he fixes himself a glass of water.

“Hi babe,” you reply, watching him down the drink before he lowers his hand, wiping his mouth.

You both regard each other for a few moments before you clear your throat.

He looks at you expectantly. “What’s wrong?”

You’re grinning, nudging your head to the calendar.

Raihan watches you silently, taking another sip.

“...Aren’t you forgetting something?” you say, your grin widening.

He takes another sip.

You end up huffing, crossing your arms. “Rai. Today is-”

“Ah, that’s right,” Raihan says, before he smirks at you. You nod, sitting up properly in your seat. “How could I forget?”

“Yes yes?”

“It’s your-”

“Yes?”

“It’s your b-”

You’re leaning further in your seat expectantly. “Yes?”

“Brother’s seminar today, isn’t it? He’s hosting a special training event at Hammerlocke University.”

There is a brief silence following his reply.

“Oh....” you mumble out; you’re visibly deflating, slumping in your seat and throwing your saddened gaze to the floor, “....Yeah, it is. Funny you remembered that and not...well, you know.”

But he’s looking at the clock, “Shouldn’t you be heading for work now?” he adds, “You’re gonna be late.”

“Oh, uh, yeah,” you finish the rest of your cereal as quickly as you can and slide off your seat, grabbing your bag, donning your coat and slinging it over your shoulder. “I’ll be back at six.”

“Okay, see ya. Have fun at work.” Raihan says, and he pulls you in for a quick kiss before pinching you briefly on the ass, and you leave the house.

Once the door closes, Raihan rubs the back of his neck awkwardly when he recalls how disappointed you look, “....I’m really pushing it, aren’t I?” he utters to himself.

Raihan couldn’t have forgotten the date of your birthday, could he?

You’ve been together for years now.

At work, your coworkers surprise you with a birthday card and a box of chocolates which you are grateful for. You will be going out for drinks with them another day.

They ask you what Raihan got you for your birthday and if he surprised you with anything this morning but you tell them he didn’t mention anything but he remembered your brother’s seminar, not your birthday.

They’re stunned by the revelation and you think, hell I should’ve kept my trap shut because it sounds embarrassing but they tell you maybe he has a surprise waiting for you at home.

You inwardly hope that’s the case.

Work is over in a pinch and you begin to finish up for the day, leaving the office.

You always treat yourself to something nice on your birthday but today you will just pop into the grocery store and buy one of your favourite snacks.

Once you’ve grabbed a few packets and paid for them, you head home with your goodies and check your phone. You haven’t received any messages from Raihan all day; he’s been awfully silent since and you can’t help but feel extremely disappointed but also, this is rather uncharacteristic of him.

However, when you open the front door and step inside, you realise the entire hallway has been outlined with little chubby candles.

Your jaw drops open in shock.

“What the...”

And you hastily put down the bag of groceries on the cupboard and kick off your shoes, glancing around.

It’s a pleasant surprise so you step further down the dimly lit hallway, smiling to yourself as you marvel the beautiful display.

You follow the candles all the way towards your shared bedroom and you open the door only to bring your hands to your mouth to cover your gasp.

Raihan sits on the bed facing you, which is decorated entirely with rose petals and in front of him on the floor are a number of Goomy arranged to form a heart. They all look up at you, blinking their little beady eyes upon your arrival.

“Oh my god!” You exclaim before Raihan grins widely; he’s holding a little silver harmonica in hand.

“Hey baby girl,” he replies, as you gape at the group of Goomy who gurgle happily at you, before you avert your gaze to the gym leader.

“What is this????”

“Your birthday present,” Raihan’s grin broadens. “Watch.”

He lifts the harmonica to his lips and blow a single note which rings lightly in the air, and suddenly the Goomy begin to sing in harmony to the tune of the ‘Happy Birthday’ song.

You smack a hand over your mouth with delight and shock as they warble.

The Goomy seem to know when to take turns and harmonise in a series of watery gurgles and loud chirping and begin waving to and fro in a mesmerising pattern, their round and squishy bodies bobbing up and down in tune to the song whilst their little horns wiggle in the air.

The song is almost finished and a particularly chubby Goomy opens its mouth wide and emits a low bass tone to finish the song which makes you giggle.

You squat in front of the group once the song is over and the Goomy cheerfully gather around you as you hold your arms out.

“That was amazing!!!” you gush, patting each and every one of them on their heads and stroking their horns. They line up single file and you giggle and proceed to lift each and every Goomy off the floor and into your arms, hugging them tightly, and pecking them on the top of their heads one by one. “You guys were awesome!”

Once you’re finished, the Goomy jump up and down on their spots happily and you move to stand; Raihan beckons you closer to him and you eagerly step over towards him and he pulls you into his arms and settles you into his lap, wrapping his arms around your waist.

“I thought you forgot...” you say with a pout, fiddling with the white little straps of his hoodie.

“I’d never forget your birthday,” he murmurs, reaching forwards to press a sweet kiss on your lips.

“Is this the reason why you were always coming home so late? You were teaching them to sing for me...”

“Yeah.”

“And that smell!” you exclaim.

Raihan blinks blankly at you. “What smell?”

“It’s Goomy,” you chuckle and slink your arms around his neck, kissing him tentatively in response. “I should’ve known.”

“Hehe, but you didn't. Did you like it?” he asks, before he leans forwards and presses his lips deeply against the curve of your cheek, letting go to briefly nuzzle you at the same time, making you squirm and giggle in his grip.

“Yes!” you exclaim, before you throw your arms around him tightly. “Thank you so much, I love it!”

“Anything for you, baby girl,” he replies with a grin, and you smile as he encircles his arms around you, bringing you into a deep, passionate kiss.

EXTRA:

Raihan’s gotten you more gifts of course. He spoils you rotten.

Also, no Goomy’s were harmed in this production.
