What program do you use for your art??? I don’t have a tablet, well I do but it’s not Apple so I don’t have procreate unfortunately, but I use Krita on my desktop sometimes. Any tips on digital art for beginners? Especially with dealing with what to do with layers, what brushes to use, line art, sketching, sketching side profiles (cause I hate doing side profiles), coloring etc. I’m more traditional but I’m trying to get better at digital. Also I love your The Outsiders art—especially the musical Outsiders art you do. And especially your Curtis Brothers art. The Curtis Brothers make my autism go crazy.

I use Photoshop now but I've used Krita and IbisPaint before! Tbh I don't have many specific tips for drawing in digital, it's all about learning the possibilities of the program and what works the best for your style <3 Try to check all the brushes you have and if none work for you then download some more :D For layers I mostly make different ones for lineart, skin, hair, clothes and background :) It makes working on the drawing easier! Colouring for me is basically searching for references and using the colour palette from them :D

I struggle with side profiles too :'(( I mostly learned how the shape of the forehead, nose and lips look like and I drew it over and over again until I was able to draw it in one stroke :'))

i don't take many progress pics, so here's a timelapse just for you.

i'm almost entirely self-taught (and in a very uneven manner lol) so i can't offer much in the way of technical skills. so i'll just say a few of the things i'm glad to have learned over the years. (largely wrt digital art)

-if you really dislike a step in the process, there's a good chance you can decide to just... not do it. hate doing lineart? you can just neaten up your sketch a bit, or go completely lineless. hate coloring? switch to black and white. hate shading? just don't do it.

you'll draw a lot more if you enjoy it, and in the future you'll probably get in the mood to try again at something you used to hate, and re-evaluate, so you're not missing out.

like for a while i drew almost entirely in black+white because i hated coloring, and then i played theresia: dear emile and was hit with the inspiration to work with color again, and i've continued to do so ever since.

on the other hand, i've been doing digital art almost exclusively for like 10 years now. occasionally i'll be in the mood to draw with an actual pencil again, so i do it. and my decision is reaffirmed haha

-the scope of your character drawing will truly unlock the moment you realize there is no fundamental difference between drawing men and women, only specific features that differ on a person by person basis

-most programs will let you use any brush as an eraser (or "draw with clear"), it's a lifesaver for using heavily textured brushes

-use pureref for your reference images. idk how i worked without it for so long.

-fall in love with drawing noses. they're one of the most distinctive parts of the face, and so many people just default to one or two types!!

-sketch on a grey canvas, instead of a white one. spare your eyes the strain

-the artists who actually went to school are right, you really should use references. they making everything so much easier AND you improve your skills. win win scenario

I think it depends on what device you use it on that matters too lol, but here’s apps I’ve used & the devices that I can remember:

Ok on phone, not friendly on computer for me (the zooming function is jagged, no touch support for undo/redo & I don’t like the tools)

i think my style is just a product of my brush and what im trying to get out of my art, which is trying to portray the characters as accurately as possible. i rly just want it to look like it could be a stylized redraw of a deleted scene or something

my process is kinda everywhere bc i just move on to whatever step will probably make me hate the piece less when im done with it. i draw with a more square brush (blurring marker 1 on ibis) which i def recommend. its great for focusing on shapes in ur art and it helps me not overblend/forces me to think of more interesting lines/shapes. my sketch is a thicker size of the same pen, focusing on the major shapes and proportions and i just make as many additional layers overtop of it, lowering the size of the pen and adding details as i go

once im at the lineart i usually use a site that creates color palettes based off images (usually just steal some from old catholic art) and i steal my base colors from that. it doesnt matter how terrible ur base colors look as long as they make sense and r what ur generally going for.

these were my original base, i use colored line art and shade the basic shadows using the line art mixed with the base color, highlights r whatever is the lightest color in the palette. after that i duplicate and throw it through this filter

i play w the colors and use it as a color/hue/luminosity layer on top of the original version, lower opacity and render now that theres more colors on the canvas (the filter creates more contrast between the lame base colors i mix, then i can add bounce shadows and shit).

i use a shit ton of digital cheats. single color overlay layers at the end of a piece, pizza face overlay glow, using vignettes around the border to draw the eye towards the subjects at the center, filters, color palette generators, etc. they make things sm easier so u can worry abt experimenting with other things.

i dont rly know how to explain how i do clothes or hair other than focusing on the shadows and worrying abt lights later. this is honestly the best tutorial i can think of bc in my head im just drawing what i see as best as i can with the pen i use. use a fuck ton of reference, do actor face studies, and try to experiment with ur style everytime u draw. ur never gonna learn how to use ur programs or expand if ur bogged down by trying to achieve a specific look. sometimes that thing u were nervous abt bc thats not how ur style usually works is the best thing on the piece at the end.

actually draw only what u want to draw in that very moment and use that as an opportunity to experiment however u can. i just draw chainshipping and find ways to trick myself into learning 👍🏻 sorry this is so bad if u have any specific questions i can try to answer those better

edit: this is what i mean when i say just draw with whatever base colors and use the lineart to add value. i thoroughly hated this piece at this stage but once i adjusted the pallet it felt much more cohesive and i could continue on with the drawing. the best thing i can say is to have absolutely no process past the same few first steps and resign urself to a cycle of self hatred and throwing random bs at the wall to see what sticks

procreate is EVERYTHING to me, i swear by this program, it changed everything for me as an artist 🧡 i rarely, if ever, work in traditional mediums but i'm pretty basic if i do; graphite is my go-to, if i had the abillity to do it i'd 100% take a figure drawing class again because that was the most fun i've ever had with traditional art. i also enjoy watercolor, though!

Simple art and one shots, but I'm pushing myself to do more intricate drawings with backgrounds. I've had this multi-chapter UsaMamo yakuza fic outlined in my drafts for years.

SPARKLES. Also a lot of orange and pink circle backgrounds because I hate drawing backgrounds. :< For fic it's usually comedy and angst centered around a singular idea.

In case you never read them before, hopefully you enjoy the reads!!! I hope you can forgive the older grammar on Zorro's. I def plan to rewrite it, once I finish working on my raider-code. (It's been taking so long bc I'm trying to learn to use the CSS mixin z-index class-type. I still can't figure out image borders for the life of me, but I learned rotation class-types LOL.)

I've wanted to redraw both their reference sheet for almost YEARS now. Ever since I've gotten Marco, I continuously evolved how I draw him, over and over, to a point his old ref had become a detriment, due to how differently I draw him nowadays LOL. One thing that desperately needed a redo for him especially, how his hair is supposed to be drawn + his wings. His wings looked like floppy chicken nuggets on the old one LOL. PLUS! I added a section of details, where I see artists I commissioned, struggle with or fail on. Hopefully the detail section is sufficient in fixing that! I'm not sure, if I should also add a mention, of Marco's dot details below the pink pattern, as even the distance between the dots is different. + I LOVE DRAWING EXPRESSIONS. So to also add a small box of extras for Marco's cool glowy eyes was a treat. <3

I plan to redraw his refs for his magic wind attacks perhaps, as for now, I have a shabby drawing, and I got a free animation program lately, so I can FINALLY unleash my years of experience animating, in the appropriate program now LMAO. My own limitations of using SAI to animate, was making my animations look choppy and bad for years unfortunately, so my art always looked very amateur-ish when I actually know how to animate..

Speaking of that, for the attentive...Yes, I plan to possibly try and draw a 360° turnaround of my characters, as the next natural progression of refs next. I am SO close, so so SO close to making my art finally look like it's part of my project I've been working on for years in private. Ever since this year, people have proven, that you CAN start an animated series on the internet, and it will receive an audience. I also wanted to start an animated series when I was a teen, and now that I'm an adult I can make it happen for sure, with the right talents. When the time comes, I might seek out a music producer and perhaps, if I'll have the money, hire animators, so that I'm not the only one who has to work on the series I planned.

For Zorro....He had it coming. Last time I drew his ref, he looked like a 16 yo/ mobian child, it pissed me off for so many years, once I learned how to properly make adult characters look adult lol. THE CEREAL SPITTER NOW ACTUALLY LOOKS ADULT AND LIKE THE BASTARD SELF HE SHOULD BE. I don't have too much to add to him, but I consider him still a WIP in my brain bc- RAIDER PAGE CODE. I WANNA FINISH. GRABBY HANDS. I CAN FEEL THAT IF I LEARN Z-INDEX FINALLY I CAN REALISE THAT CODE. I've wanted to make a code for my raiders 3 years ago already y'all it's painful to be patient w/ myself sdgkldslgdsg

ANYWAY. Forgive me in advance for watermarks, but I kind of? Am paranoid now over my art a bit bc my work is good now? Like I think I'm in the final stages of my artistry. I can feel, that I might find the perfect style soon. I need to experiment just a bit more. Just a bit more...I might consider loosening up my linework in 2024. I honestly still? Hate lineart? Like..My lineart looks good now, don't get me wrong but. I just love sketchy artwork so much more??? Sketching is so fun, creating is so joyful, when it's a sketch..But lineart kind of.....Ruins my art. I think I should loosen up. It's why I might change my approach a millionth time, but my artstyle has potential now. I don't feel, like my art is awful anymore or worth nothing, it now HAS worth, I now HAVE the right to have an ego about it, but some pieces still are missing, to give me the ultimate happiness and relief in my work. Perhaps if I do some more commissions, I might unlock my final potential? We'll see.

My aspirations for 2024;

Pass the prep-exam for my workplace (I LOVE MY WORK. I SINCERELY WISH I'LL PASS. I love work so much omg I don't wanna be fired so badly)

Draw more art of Finn & Marco so they finally pass Chloe in most images on TH (I REALLY DON'T WANT HER TO HAVE THE MOST IMAGES STILL. It should either be my comfort boys or C.I.Ta)

Be more experimental with mixing medias traditionally (I wanna start mixing mini craft-projects + my drawings or mix more pencils + markers and also glass pens + watercolours. I rlly rlly wanna experiment and go loose.)

Animate more and possibly even post said animations. I know animation takes me HELL OF A LOT of time, as I lack so much time to do so, but I'd love to do that

Stop stressing so hard over OTA's and commissions. I know I tell myself each year, "this year will be the year I wanna finish all my owed art!!" But every once and a while, I need to be a realist to myself, my optimism may be good, but it sometimes..Is a little over-eager. But I noticed in 2023, I really heavily strangle myself out. I haven't drawn any private art since 2020, really.....It says a lot about an artist, if they now haven't drawn a personal drawing and finished it, in the same quality of their owed work for 4 years now. I haven't been really honest to myself and my heart, and I'd like to forgive myself slowly, by allowing to both work on owed work, and start creative, passionate art-projects again, again, where I can let loose and just. Experiment. Do something new. Push the boundaries of my art. Combine medias, collages, etc, anything under the sun I wanna try. I limit myself so hard, over chasing a goal, I can't achieve, if I won't acknowledge, I'll cause my own death as an artist, if I continue to chase unattainable goals, I can't achieve, if I won't be gentle to myself.

Finish revamping my commission sheet. It requires, I draw new examples of course. The big thing I need to warn ahead; I will have a fat price-increase, due to work taking all the time I can have now. I can only work around 4hrs a day on art. My art takes around 20 hours to be finished. Every piece is done with love, with time, with effort. I'm not an artist, who adheres to algorithms. I'm an artist who lives with passion, with freedom in mind. I have an endless amount of ideas, I have an infinite amount of space and ways to create it. I am not a machine, I am, what an artist strives to be. To simply...Create. AI can go to hell, and drag NFTs along with it. I to this day get attempts to be hacked, by tech bros, believe it or not. I pissed off BAYC on Twitter once, and some butthurt idiot, is still trying to get to my Insta and Steam to this day. Won't happen anymore with 2FA idiot, lmao. I won't allow a 2nd hack to happen.

Finish giving ALL my characters on TH a floatie icon. I know w/ 100% certainty, that I got this task in the bag. This one is of no problem at all.

New progress 8.14.24

So I have some new updates to nursing school, and basically what I've been working on this summer.

I've been doing more research with nursing schools, and am starting to understand it better. There are 4 credible universities in Sacramento: They are Chamberlain University, Samuel Merritt University, Sacramento State and University of San Francisco. I wanted to stay in Sac because I feel like I have everything set up perfectly here at my apartment to become a full time student again. I was confused to why some programs wanted the HESI/Teas and why other didn't require it. So through my research, I found that 2 of these schools are public universities (cheaper) and 2 of them are private (much more expensive). The private ones are more lax on requirements and are easier to get into because they want your money. Public schools are harder to get into, but they're cheaper. At this point, I don't even care what I pay - I believe the private schools are 60k-100k and the public schools may be in the 30k range. I don't think I want to go through not getting into a program again and waiting another year. I rather pay the absurd amount and start this journey going.

With that being said, this summer, I continued working as a phlebotomist at a new location (Rocklin PCN) while taking a nutrition class and slightly been studying for the TEAS. I got my A and basically satisfied the last requirement to apply for the public programs (Sac State and Samuel Merritt). But I found that the applications for SM don't open until spring - so I'm going to wait for spring for that. I did finish applying to 2 nursing schools however (chamberlain and USF)!!! This was a huge milestone for me because it's something that I've been waiting for since the beginning of the year. Chamberlain is the most expensive school and its for that reason that it's easy to get into. So I feel like regardless of what happens, I'm going to be starting nursing school in Sept 2025. On the other hand, the second program (USF) turned out to be a better fit for me than I thought. They're partnered up with the VA in sacramento, which is my old place of employment. They are very veteran-centered, and it was really fun answering their supplemental questions. I have a really good feeling about that program. I think it'll be so funny to do my clinicals at that hospital and seeing my old co-workers. That school actually starts in the Spring, and it's the school I want to get in the most.

I'm trying to see if I have enough time to finish the rest of the requirements for Sac State, because the deadline for them to get TEAs results will be in October. I feel like I need to try, since that was the reason I took nutrition in the first place. So the next goal will be trying to apply to Sac State, and then apply for the final school (SM) if I don't get in to Sac State or USF, which would both start in spring.

All I know is I'm fucking ready. Ready to start the next step in my career. I've been a phlebotomist for 6 years now...I can't believe that. I only intended to do that for a year or so..and its been 6 already. It's not that I hate the job, but I feel like I gained what I needed from it. I now have experience with Cancer patients, drawing babies, kids, adults, and vets in all departments. I'm thankful for that experience because it's definitely going to make me a better nurse. I can't wait for them to see what I can bring to the table.

That's it for now. I have to go into work soon, but just wanted to document the progress I've been proud of so far. It's greatly improved my mental state now that I'm finally making some progress again. I will write more updates as they come :)

I've only been drawing digitally myself for a couple of weeks so I'm curious how other people do it.

this is so FUCKING OLD but i told myself id answer it even if this info is useless to you now bc NO ASK GETS LEFT BEHIND IM SO SORRY IVE THOUGHT ABOUT TTHIS EVERY SINGLE DAY IM SO SERIOUS i was in an art block for so long 😭

YES DIGITAL ART IS SO FUN what program are you using? i use procreate on the ipad

my process is an absolute fucking nightmare im the person those art accounts warn you about it’s really bad

i start out w a really messy sketch, usually a colour blob to draw lines over and establish guides. i go over the sketch 2-3 cleaning it up until i end up w something like the right, just usually a little messier, i clean it up and edit and change colour as needed along the way. i kinda hate line art, i never do it, clean sketches work so much better for me.

for colouring, i block out the biggest areas w one colour, then use clipping mask on that section i block out smaller sections on different layers, like the skin is a different layer from the dress, this makes colouring a lot easier if youre not doing a more traditional paint style at least imo

then it comes down to individually colouring everything. im a HUGE fan of lighting so i start off w a warm overlay, ESPECIALLY for this one since its firelight but you can tell by anything else ive done that’s its usually the case. it looks really weird rn but trust the process. then i usually go in w a dark purple on multiply for shadows. i do it on multiple different layers, smudging some, some have darker opacities to have darker effects in certain areas etc etc and editing the line work where its needed and adding more lines for detail.

this is also when i sort a background out if needed to make sure the lighting works. then to continue the nightmare on even MORE layers, i do the lighting. some blurred and some lines, in places where the light would hit as well as some face details like blush now that the lighting colours are done.

this isn’t the best i kinda fucked up her face w the colouring i like the sketch sm more but also that’s part of improving and ive been out of it for a while its a new years resolution to stay on top of art, but this has been my general process for a while. its a literal fucking nightmare i use close to or over 100 layers on anything more than a sketch but its really helpful if you’re a bit anxious and want to be able to go back and switch things out. its kinda hard to maneuver with but its worth it for me. once again this is so old you probably dont even care anymore but i needed to answer it at the very least for my conscience im SO SORRY

I went to an art gallery my university was holding to support an old friend of mine a while back and it was so much fun!! The talent there was amazing and it was so cool to be able to see and talk to the artists about their work!! If you another chance to do a juried art gallery I’ll be rooting for you 🥺!!

So Spade has a lot of ocs and HOPEFULLY I won't miss any! (If I do I'll just reblog this with the missing ones info)

Bot Parent - I think I know the least about them but they are VERY important. The most important maybe. While they don't have an official name or design just yet, they've certainly got plenty of involvement in lore!!!

They are, in a way, the head creator of staff bots and a majority of the animatronics.(?) Except Happy specifically, there might be others they don't have involvement with. Once very likable and quite skrunky to "I am going to make all the animatronics capable of feeling pain, maybe next I'll fuck over that blackhole guy in the theater some more"

Boomerang - It was made to test the limitations of the animatronics. Stretchy arms, chest compartment(?), did I mention they're HUGE? Now it roams the staff tunnels/garbage area because, as you'll find with a few others, Fazbear Entertainment just threw these whole ass animatronics away and didn't bother to dismantle them. (Boomerang isn't their official name but shh)

White Sun - MY SKRINKY. LITERALLY MY FAVORITE OF THESE GUYS. I LOVE WHITE SM. So White was the first Daycare Attendant ever in the history of ever. Originally, they were made to keep lost children company in the Lost and Found, but eventually Fazbear Entertainment made a small daycare area for them to reside in. At first, kids could draw all over White without a care, but after the daycare was officially built, that feature was removed. As the Superstar Daycare got more popular, White ended up getting scrapped entirely in favor of making new attendants. So now they wander the trash area!!!

Also, White was Monty's punching bag back in the day, and a "hug" turned crush seems to have factored in to the decision to scrap them. So ... Physical contact is a bit iffy for them!

Stellar - The dog. The fucking thing. It lurks in the same places Boomerang does, but it isn't really that sapient or sentient. I mean, definitely sentient to a degree, but that's all. It was built to be the next Daycare Attendant, but is HEAVILY flawed and not a lot of care was put into their programming.

Stellar is pretty fuckin big and it has a chest compartment just like Boomerang. Also, it hates the color yellow but loves purple. It is based on a blackhole!

Chip - She's similar to Crescent and Star in the sense that she was a DCA's assistant! But she was only around for 2 months due to a.. incident with some dude. A mauling. I think the guy lived but unfortunately Chip was scrapped despite the DCA she was bonded to trying to convince them not to.

And guess what! Bot Parent programmed her I believe and they were just SO CONFIDENT in Bot Parent's capabilities they didn't do a test run. Which led to the mauling. Dumb bitches

Happy - My anti-blorbo. Happy is a blackhole show host type animatronic that works in the Superstar Theater! He's gone through shit and has horrible coping mechanisms.

By that I mean he mostly takes out his feelings on those around him, which is Star (we'll get to them in a moment). An absolute CUNT to Star. Eventually his mental state gets worse and worse and BOOM, Bot Parent steps in and fucks him over more somehow!

I think he'd sound like Markiplier. That's not lore, just a personal thing.

Comet - Oh, Comet, my sweet child. They see Star(again, in a moment!!) as their sibling!!! Comet themselves has stretchy limbs, is present strong, and assists in general construction around the pizzaplex. Like... Setting shit up and what not.

Unfortunately they aren't too aware of the Happy bullying but if they were I think they'd beat the shit out of him

Star - AH YES, STAR, MY SECOND FAVORITE CHILD/HJ. Since we both have ocs named Star we started calling it's Supernova/Prima Donna (this one) and mine Jupiter/Bee! That doesn't have anything to do with the lore I just thought it was silly.

Ok, Lore. Due to Happy BEING AN ASS, they ended up taking after his shit personality. A big bully who secretly longs for companionship (not explicitly stated I think but from our roleplays I can tell NVNB). They're very lightweight but strong... Yet fragile. Also, they have wings! They can fly!!!! Aand they ALSO have a cool weapon they can shift into anything!! I know how it works in my head but my brain juices are evaporating, just know it's really cool.

Star really just needs a real friend, man. God.

Spider - SPIDERRR *goes feral* Spider is such a homo. A gay.

They were made for the Lost and Found area, taking over White's original purpose. Though... They somehow ended up falling in love with Sun and Moon. You have no idea how adorable the three of them are.

Spider also has their own room where they "collect" things that are never picked up from the Lost and Found area!!

Due to a roleplay one of their nicknames is Fish and their room is called the Fish Bowl.

So far I don't know of anything bad happening to Spider! Haha I sure hope that doesn't change :')
