my body doesn’t Hate me, per se. It just Loves being an annoying little shit
#my post#i feel a little bad about complaining about it sometimes#because it’s not like i have super serious afflictions#and we’ve gotten some handled through this or that#but. i’ve just got. such an extensive collection of#‘‘bodily things that would be fine individually albeit annoying; but i’ve got all of them so it makes for a frustrating existence’’#subacute eczema. the worst of the bunch. only on my hands but very itchy and still eczema#scapular winging or whatever they call it when you can pop out your scapulas at will.#not very bad at all. the least offensive. just aches sometimes and makes me worry#some tinnitus. a tad annoying. i hear it most when it’s quiet or i’m inside. sometimes it flares but not often. tuning it out isn’t too har#chronic rhinitis. i got some surgery(?) for this one. lotta nose sprays.#my nose is almost always congested and runny and going anywhere without tissues is dangerous.#dry lips. also not altogether that bad it’s just annoying and it gets cracked and sometimes painful to open my mouth too wide ig.#we manage that one well with whatever lip products my sister gave me. it’s not very bad#dandruff? maybe? is it dandruff or just scalp skin? i got no clue man#and you’re like. ‘‘okay you’re right those are all quite annoying. but is it really that bad?’’#and i’m like ‘‘No. but have you Considered that i have to deal with them all at Once?’’#BUT THAT. ISN’T EVEN IT. ‘CAUSE IT’D BE ONE THING IF MY BODY WAS JUST BUILT LIKE THAT. BUT MY BRAIN HATES ME TOO.#BOOM. dermatillomania!! i pick at my acne a little. under my nails. the hard skin under my nails.#my scalp! until it’s itchy and there’s a little bit of blood! i gently pull at my eyelashes a little bit and rub my eyes.#and. get this. dry and flaky bits of skin. GUESS WHERE I HAVE FLAKY BITS OF SKIN. OH THAT’S RIGHT: THE SUBACUTE ECZEMA ON MY HANDS.#it’s better now it really is but i have spent hours picking at it after i’m already all set for bed. 2-3 hrs over a trash can picking at it#‘‘yeah okay that’s bad. but-’’ BOOM. ADHD or at least fidgeting. i fidget most by picking at idk All of the aforementioned.#‘‘oof yeah that does actually suck-’’ BOOM. OCD!!! now that one is the REAL kicker that one fucking hates me#just take all of the above and assume i have some vaguely annoying compulsion tied to it.#and it wouldn’t be so annoying sometimes if it weren’t for the fact that i deal with it all every day kind of#so correction: my body doesn't necessarily hate me it’s just that my body has shaken hands made deals about which exact disorders and bodil#irritations i need to collectively make living incredibly annoying.#thank you for coming to my TED talk. cue the world’s smallest violin or whatever

I should go figure out if my interview outfit actually works.
It should, but you know.

I'm kinda sad, guys. Completely off-topic super-long rant incoming, feel free/encouraged to disregard.
So basically, I managed to get in on a paid month-long trial of an eczema face cream in exchange for feedback. Honestly didn't even care about being paid, I was just in desperation for my face to not feel all scaley and shit anymore (seborrheic dermatitis is a fcking bitch, and it's even worse in a humid climate and GUESS WHAT THE CLIMATE IS LIKE HERE FOR MOST OF THE YEAR HAHAHA) and have been willing to try literally anything for some time.
Well, anything except steroid creams. I refuse. I did it once, it made it worse, never ever again. And I stfg that's ALL that dermatologists want to hand out for this type of eczema, despite glaring evidence that even if it works temporarily, it creates even worse problems down the line.
Sebhorric dermatitis presents with similar symptoms to psoriasis, and tends to present its symptoms around the face, neck, ears, and scalp. Liken it to really terrible dandruff that can cover your entire face. Scrubbing it off just leaves redness and itchy/painful open wounds. It's impossible to cover with make-up. It's at its worst in the humid summer months. I have to consistently use more than five products twice a day in the spring/summer/fall just to keep it under control enough to not be noticeable to anyone but me. And I'm already really bad at being consistent when it comes to self-care.
Enter this stupid fucking trial cream. This shit with its lack of labeling and mysterious code.
Tumblr media
I had to agree to stop using all other products except my regular facial cleanser to make sure my feedback was accurate to this one product, okay. No other lotions or toners or face masks or anything. Use this stuff twice a day to once every other day, give weekly feedback for the duration of a month. ALL I know about it, is it isn't steroid based. I was in the middle of a very bad breakout when it arrived in the mail. I had scales of dry skin on my fucking eyelids. It literally hurt to blink. It was awful.
I'm almost two weeks in and my skin has not felt or looked this amazing since before I hit fucking puberty. I noticed a difference literally the first time I put the shit on. The dry flakes essentially just melted off and didn't come back. I actually cried a little out of pure shock and happiness.
I'm almost halfway through the month and absolutely no sign of any negative side effects. No acne, no oiliness, no rashes, no dryness, no inflammation, nothing. It doesn't have any weird smell or leave any weird residue, absorbs in less than a minute. Just...genuinely clear skin with no issues at all for the first time since I was a literal child. I've still got a little redness around my cheeks, chin, and nose (which I've had since the eczema first started to flare up in my late teens), but even that's beginning to fade.
Aaaaaand since it's a trial, I don't know the product name. Which means once it's gone, it's gone.
I'm hoping taking part in the trial means I'll have the opportunity to find out about it and purchase it in the future, but I have this horrible sinking feeling it's going to be far beyond my price range. You know, test it out on the normies to make sure it works, then slap an astronomical price tag on it to market it to the rich and influential. I just know that's where this is going and I hate it.
It is nice having good skin for the first time since I was like...twelve. And even nicer only having to use a tiny bit of this one single face cream once every other day, and not having to worry about my skin screaming in protest if I happen to forget/skip a day or two (which I have done, again I suck at consistent self-care).
But the knowledge that it's probably only going to last for as long as this tiny little magical unlabeled bottle lasts...makes me so so very sad.

Thinking about my HC of Hux having Eczema and Psoriasis. (If you think this is gross literally leave I only made this bc I have it) You think he would do everything in his power to get rid of it but honestly I don’t think he would. It probably developed as a child and I doubt Brendol would do much to give him any relief from it so It was probably REALLY BAD until he finally got creams and shampoos for it so now he’s used to it so didn’t really think oh I could probably do more to make this go away (because unlike me he’d probably be okay with injections). But even after he got creams and shampoos I feel like it would mostly go unchecked, because he works long hours, misses times to put cream on and then is like “I’ll do it tomorrow” and then the same thing happens. (Speaking from experience) and the Shampoo comes in tiny bottles so he’d probably use that one more like he’s supposed to but run out before he could get a refil cause he’s out in space in the middle of nowhere a lot and by the time he can get one he’s so busy he forgets. (Also speaking from experience) Also he hides his patches with makeup because they don’t go away fast enough but that just agitates them more. He’ll scratch his head because it’s itchy and bothering him or just because it gives some relief but he wears black so imeadetly regrets it and gets frustrated. (And also he doesn’t want to mess up his hair) But absolutely HATES if people brush off his shoulders for him or ask too and gets embarrassed if someone thinks it’s dandruff (definitely speaking from experience), but this does add to the fact that he secretly loves ren playing with his hair or massaging his scalp. He also would never use something like a blow dryer because it hurts :(
Also I guarantee people will mistake patches on his neck for hickeys. Why? Because that’s happened to me so many fuckin times. Grown ass adults askin a literal child these things it’s fuckin weird.

Why I hate how dandruff is presented
You've all seen the jokes- old man with dandruff, shaking his head and a cloud of snow falls down, dandruff just being there for a laugh... It's never treated as anything serious, ever. It's just a joke! And just a joke about old men at that.
I'm 17 years old. I've had dandruff since I was at least 11. I've been made fun of all that time for the white flakes that are a constant on my head.
I just saw dandruff as a joke, too.
At most, it was just my scalp being a bit dry, so it needed a moisturising shampoo.
Yeah.... Turns out I have scalp psoriasis. I'm in near constant pain, which gets worse whenever I'm ill or stressed, because psoriasis is an autoimmune disease. My immune system is attacking my own skin. It's gotten to the point where shampoo doesn't help. I'm just in pain, always. I'll have a doctor's appointment where we can discuss options soon hopefully.
It's painful enough that I end up with scabbing all over my scalp from scratching. I pull my hands away and my nails are bloody from repeatedly picking and itching the scabs.
So no, not just a funny joke.
When I mentioned how painful it was to my friend, (only referring to it as dandruff rather than psoriasis) he said "I didn't realise dandruff could be painful!". In fact, several conditions that can cause dandruff have the fact that they're itchy or sore in their their symptoms list- eczema, dermatitis, and of course psoriasis.
And yet people just see dandruff as a joke. Even now, I feel anxious writing this- I feel like someone's gonna read this and think 'why are they getting so serious about dandruff? Lighten up!'
Sure, for some people it's not painful. Just flaky. But even then, they can experience the same social issues I did- I still remember a pair of kids seeing my large white skin flakes on my dark hair and exclaiming that I had nits (lice for Americans), and running away shouting at me. I hate that it's treated as a joke, or stigmatised, and seen as just an old man thing.
It's an actually serious issue for so many people. Why isn't it treated as such?

Health
I am feeling much better in general, and I'm happy about that.
I had a mild cold this week but am getting better. I am slightly congested and stuffy and am sneezing a bit. I will get better.
My skin is itchy and I am home for the thanksgiving break so I will itch pretty often. I just need to avoid my mom's room and the living room, as well as limiting contact with my younger dog (I really hate that I have to do this, but I know for sure she is the source of my inflammation). I can wear a mask and cotton gloves when with her, but it is best for me to avoid the living room and my mom's room, and even the staircase. I do go to my mom's room often but I need to stop.
Zoryve and antihistamines (benadryl usually) can help. I'm taking allergy shots but it will take some time until I see relief from that.
I remember being itchy when I got my first dog. I used to itch but then I was okay around him. I got very itchy in Fall 2019 and I know I was dealing with allergies (I would have frequent eczema flares and my eyes were very very very itchy). I don't know if it was my dog, ragweed, or mold, or all the above that were triggering the reaction.
I feel because I'm in an inflamed allergic state, I am reacting to smaller things like bread (I used to react to the metals in my water bottle when I got my first dog). Things that won't normally bother me are really bothering me now because of this inflamed allergic state. I feel this inflammation also made my immune system more sensitive and I'm experiencing uncomfortable seb derm symptoms (when not in an inflamed state I would simply experience dandruff and a greasy scalp).
I'm feeling better, My cold will go soon. I'll rely on my seb derm skin care routine, zoryve, benadryl and allergy shots. I do want to avoid the living room, my mom's room and the staircase because my dogs sit there a lot. I want to limit my contact time with my younger one, but this will be tough because I love my dogs so much. But I am suffering healthwise.
I want to get new sweaters for the winter, but ones that do not have wool, cashmere, or alpaca. I'm so scared my skin would flare.
I feel fit and metabolically healthy and light. I'm eating well, not bloated, brisk walking a lot and fasting. I have not fasting for the past week, I'll start my fast on day 1.
I want to support my hormones and understand how their cyclical pattern affects my hunger and energy, because they really do. Some days I want to eat less and less carbs, others I want to eat a lot more calories and more carbs/fat. I got mozzarella bread rolls yesterday. Not a food I would eat on most days, but definitely on week 4 of my cycle.
I'll see how I'm feeling days 1-10 and see how I plan on fasting. I'm so happy I am sticking to a low glycemic anti-inflammatory diet.

Hm. I hate to get involved in an argument between a bunch of strangers that's already gone off the rails a bit, but I want to point out that there are multiple definitions of the word dandruff in play right here, both valid in our dumb expansive English language- one (I think this is more common but I could be wrong) treats "dandruff" as a generic, lay term for scaling of the scalp, regardless of cause, and the other considers it to be synonymous with the scalp flaking inherent to seborrhoeic dermatitis, (which is something I have and do not enjoy, basically skin flaking with an accompanying distinctive rash def connected to Malassezia family of yeasts).
As the OED says the word "dandruff" goes back to the 1540s at least, I'm inclined to say the first definition came first, as from what I can gather we haven't always had the language or the science to isolate seborrhoeic dermatitis caused by the Malassezia genus of yeasts from other forms of scalp flaking, and while dandruff has stuck around as a common word the terms for conditions it's been associated with have been juggled all around.
Here is a seborrhoeic dermatitis review that considers "dandruff" a generic term, and here is an article that treats "scalp eczema" as the generic term and "dandruff" as the same as seborrhoeic dermatitis. I'm sure there are plenty more of varied interpretations out there- language is hard sometimes like that.
Also as a heads up multiple Malassezia yeast species are connected with seborrhoeic dermatitis, not just Malassezia furfur.
Tumblr media
Follow-up fun note: if you, like me, saw the Latin name furfur and thought instantly of the demon earl of love, truth, storms and secrets from the Dictionnaire Infernal- alas,"furfur" just means "bran" in Latin, and was borrowed as a word for dandruff c. 1400 ad. The Dictionnaire Infernal was published 1818, so maybe Furfur was named after the condition. Or possibly a corruption from furcifer, the Latin for yoke-bearer or scoundrel.
As a doctor, do you have any hygiene tips you think most people could use hearing? Like things people seem to neglect or do wrong that pop up and cause problems? Thanks!
EARS. Earwax is genetically determined. Some people get dry, scant earwax and others get wet, copious earwax. The biggest mistake I see is relying on Q-tips. Every time you stimulate the inside of your ear canal it makes your ears go “oh shit, there’s a threat! I better make more protective wax!” and next thing you know you’ve managed to jam a bunch of wax you told you ears to make back up against your ear drums and you can’t hear as well. Don’t rely on Q-tips. When you’re in the shower, let warm water run in, mush it around by pushing on your tragus (the cartilage flap in front of the canal), and let it drain. Repeat. Blot dry your ears with the edge of a towel or a Kleenex or something afterwards. If you tend to get really stubborn wax, use Debrox drops once or twice a week.
And vaginas. They’re mucus membranes once you get past the labia majora! You wouldn’t soap the inside of your mouth, don’t soap your vagina! It’s a self cleaning oven and if it smells weird GO SEE A MEDICAL PROVIDER because over the counter shit probably isn’t the right answer.
Dandruff isn’t because your scalp is dry. It’s because of a microorganism called malassezia furfur. It eats scalp oils. Dandruff shampoos mostly work pretty well.
Those are the three I can think of off the top of my head. Never use Irish Spring soap! It’s so heavily fragranced it’s a contact dermatitis waiting to happen! I once had a guy develop full body itching and I was JOKING when I said “what, did you just switch to Irish Spring?” and from then until he died he was convinced I was a witch because I was RIGHT.

Are Water Softeners Worth It? Exploring the Pros and Cons
Tumblr media
Trying to decide whether a water softener is worth the upfront investment? Here, we've shared everything you should consider when deciding whether a water softener is worth the cost. 📌 Key Takeaways: - A water softener is worth it for you if hard water is your main water quality issue, you have skin or hair problems caused by hardness minerals, you want to improve appliance efficiency, and you're fed up with cleaning limescale. - A water softener might not be worth it if you can't afford the upfront cost, you don't want to commit to routine maintenance, you don't like salt-softened water, you're planning on moving or traveling, or you have another water quality issue. 🤔 Is A Water Softener Worth The Cost? If you answer "yes" to 5 or more of these questions, a water softener is likely worth it for you. - Have I got at least $500-$1,000 to spend upfront? - Can I confidently install a water softener myself, or can I afford to pay for a professional install? - Am I prepared to maintain my water softener by topping up the salt and occasionally cleaning the resin beads? - Is hard water the main water quality issue that I want to address? - Am I happy to add low levels of salt (or potassium chloride) to my water supply to produce soft water? - Do I want to reduce cleaning time by eliminating limescale build-up and water spots on my fixtures and appliances? - Am I keen to improve the efficiency and extend the lifespans of my washing machines, hot water heaters, and other water-using appliances? - Do I have skin conditions that would be reduced or ameliorated by installing a water softener? 🚰 When Are Water Softeners Worth The Cost? Let's look at some specific scenarios when water softeners are worth the cost. Hard Water Is Your Biggest Water Quality Issue A water softener is worth it for you if hard water is the predominant water quality issue that you want to tackle. Hardness is one of the most common water-related problems. You can test your water's hardness with a hard water test, and if high levels of calcium and magnesium are detected, you know you will benefit from installing a water softener. Water softener systems eliminate magnesium and calcium ions, producing soft water that's incapable of forming scale or mineral spots. If you want to enjoy all the benefits of soft water in your home, a water softener is worth it for you. You Have Skin/Hair Conditions Caused By Hard Water Hair and skin conditions can affect your well-being, so if you think your eczema, dandruff, or dermatitis is being triggered or worsened by hard water, a water softener is likely worth it for you. Water softening systems eliminate the minerals that form build-up and soap scum on your skin and hair. You're Fed Up With Cleaning Limescale A water softening system is a worthy investment for you if your biggest gripe with your water quality is the extra work that goes into cleaning limescale and hard water spots off your fixtures and surfaces. Cleaning up the effects of hard water is a full-time job. Installing a softener system eliminates scale formation, so it's well worth doing if you hate the fuss of cleaning limescale off your shower screen and toilets. You Want To Improve Your Appliance Lifespan & Efficiency Washing machines, dishwashers, and similar appliances in your home can't run optimally with hard water. If you want to get the very most out of these appliances for as long as possible, a water softening system is likely worth the money for you. Softeners eliminate the minerals that cause scale buildup and blockages in appliances, helping them to run as efficiently as possible and preventing issues that could shorten their lifespans. You're Happy With The Ion Exchange Process The conventional water softening process involves removing calcium and magnesium minerals from your water in exchange for salt (sodium) ions. This process, known as ion exchange, adds only very low levels of salt to water - and newer models use much less salt than the older softeners. However, you will need to confirm that you're okay with adding traces of salt to your water before buying a water softener. You will also need to acknowledge that water softener systems remove essential minerals from your water. Soft water is free from calcium and magnesium minerals, so you'll need to make sure you're getting plenty of these in your diet (which you should be whether you drink hard or soft water). If you think the ion exchange process has more benefits than setbacks, a water softener is worth it for you. 🚱 When Aren't Water Softeners Worth The Cost? Here are some instances when water softeners might not be worth the cost for you. You Can't Afford The Upfront Or Ongoing Cost If you can't justify, or you can't afford, the upfront cost of a water softener, it might not be worth it for you. The starting price of a conventional softening system is around $1,000. Cabinet softeners are more budget-friendly, starting at around $450. Some manufacturers offer no-interest payment plans that break down the upfront cost into smaller, more manageable payments. But even then, you might not want to commit to new debt, so a softener might not be right for you at this time. Water softener systems also slightly increase your water bill because they waste water during regeneration (although newer water softener models optimize their water and energy use). If you don't want to waste any more water than necessary, and you want to avoid the costs of this additional water use, a water softener might not be worth it for you. You Don't Want To Commit To Maintenance Water softener systems don't need a lot of maintenance - you just need to top up the salt every month or so, and clean the resin beads about once a year. However, if you don't want to commit to any amount of maintenance. a water softener might not be worth the upfront cost. The last thing you want is to spend all that money on a water softening system, only to neglect the system and end up drinking hard water anyway. You Don't Like Salt-Softened Water Conventional water softeners use sodium (or salt) to soften water. This gives water a slightly altered taste (although there isn't enough salt to make water taste salty), and a smooth, "slippery" texture. Some people simply don't like the idea of using salt-softened water in their homes. Even if water softened with salt is safe to drink and doesn't coat your skin with soap scum, it has a "foreign" taste and feel that some folks can't get used to. In this case, a water softener may not be worth it for you - but you can still consider salt-free water conditioners, which retain hardness minerals but prevent scale formation. You're Planning On Moving Or Traveling Since water softening systems are such big upfront investments, it probably won't make sense to buy one of these machines if you're planning on moving several times over the next few years, or you're thinking about traveling and won't have a base to return home to for a while. You get the most value out of your investment when you buy and use the system throughout its expected lifespan (which is typically 10-20 years for a modern softener). Of course, you can take your softener with you when you move, or you could leave it in your old home for the new homeowners to enjoy. But you might decide that the upfront purchase isn't worth it until you know you'll be settled in one location for a while. On a similar note, a water softening system isn't worth it for you if you currently rent and your landlord doesn't allow you to make "major changes" to your home's plumbing system (i.e. cutting into your water line to install a softener). The potential repercussions of subverting your rental terms aren't worth the risk! You Have Another Water Quality Issue A water softener is only worth it for you if you're looking for a solution to the effects of hard water in your home, such as mineral deposits, decreased efficiency of water-using appliances, and reduced flow in your plumbing system. Water softener systems can remove calcium and magnesium ions, and low levels of iron, from your water supply. If you have another drinking water quality issue, such as chlorine, fluoride, or lead, or you want to improve the taste and smell of your water, a water softener isn't the solution. The system won't be worth the money because it won't resolve your water issues. Instead, you'll need to look at water filters that do address these issues. 💰 Can A Water Softener Actually Help You Save Money? You've probably read various marketing materials from water softener manufacturers that say these systems will help you save money. But what's the reason for this, and how true is it? First of all, it is true that a water softener can help you to save money. There are a few reasons for this: - It prevents scale buildup in your water heater, so the unit can continue to heat your water quickly, keeping your heating costs low. - It reduces the amount of soap and detergent required in washing machines and dishwashers, so you can spend less on these items every month. - It extends the life-span of your appliances, reducing the need for repairs and replacements. - It reduces your cleaning duties, so you won't have to spend a fortune on scale-removers and commercial cleaners for hard water damage. Of course, running a water softener costs money that you wouldn't otherwise be spending, and that's something you should take into account. But most new softeners are highly efficient, and the total energy of running a water softener over a one-year period is apparently no more than the energy required to run an alarm clock. The average family of four uses less than 10 bags of softener salt per year, too, so you won't have to spend a fortune on upkeep. More Articles: - Whole House Water Filters Pros and Cons: Are They Are Worth the Investment - Salt-Free Water Softeners: Do They Live Up to the Hype? - Soft Water Bliss: Exploring the Best Water Softeners for Every Budget 📑 Final Word Ultimately, even if you can think of tens of reasons to buy a water softening system, water softeners are only worth it if they're high-quality systems sold by reputable manufacturers. There are hundreds of water softeners for sale today, and the reality is that a good portion of them simply aren't worth your money. When shopping for a water softener, make sure you're aware of all your options and shortlist the products that are best for your budget and water softening needs. Only consider manufacturers that are well-known in the industry and have a history of positive customer feedback. Avoid deals that seem too good to be true, since they probably are. Generally, you'll need to spend at least $450 for a cabinet-style all-in-one softener, or around $1,000-1,200 on average for a conventional two-tank softener. Thankfully, you don't have to put in all the research work yourself. We've spent hours comparing and reviewing the best-selling water softeners available today, so you can find all the most important information about these systems in our buyer's guides. Hi.
My name is rose and to be blunt, I am a walking pigsty. I hate my hair, I hate my skin, I hate my face, I hate my clothes, I hate my bedroom, I literally hate everything about myself. I'm sick of feeling so bad all of the time, so I've decided to make a change. Problem is, I've tried to change SO MANY TIMES before and either given up, or completely forgotten about it. This time, I'm going to make monthly progress videos in the hope that if I can see progress, I will be more motivated. I'm also splitting it up into categories rather than just a generic "be better", because more specific goals are more achievable or something.
The first one is hair. My hair is a complete mystery to me, k sometimes it's a poofy mess, sometimes it looks pretty ok and then I wake up the next day and it's ugly again. My scalp has also been really itchy recently, and I haven't got a clue why. I currently use Asda anti dandruff shampoo (I don't have dandruff but it helps with the itching) and Shea moisture conditioner, and I wash my hair every other day. I do use scalding hot water which isn't good for my hair or skin, so I definitely need to work on that. My dream hair would be something like cher from clueless or chuu from loona, and I want to grow it longer. I also need to figure out what hairstyles fit my face, because usually I just leave it how it is and I hate it.
Tumblr media
The second category is skin. In theory, I have a skincare routine but in practice I only do it every other day and end up rinsing my face and rubbing on moisturiser most days. As a result, my skin is really congested and also itchy? It sucks. On my body, I have eczema, and it's really itchy and horrible. It looks orange and just odd? All I use on that is the shower gel and moisturiser prescribed by the doctor. My parents offered to take me to a dermatologist once because it was so bad, but that sounds expensive and I do think it'll go away by itself at some point.
Category three is health. Health has never been something that's super important to me, and I end up spending all my money on crisps and chocolate bars. I'm a vegetarian, but I am also quite picky so I end up surviving on tomato soup and quorn pies. I am also basically allergic to exercise, and I wish I didn't always get out of breath when I run. I know that most of my hair and skin issues would be hugely helped if I was healthy, so I really need to fix my diet and stuff. I also carry a lot of fat in my face, and I really wish I didn't have a double chin.
Environment and organisation is my fourth category, because my room is a rubbish tip, which I decorated when I was six so some of the design choices are... interesting. All my stuff seems to get stained or dirty, and my schoolbooks are all over the floor. I want to get new school supplies, and keep them nice, and I am also swapping rooms with my sister and redecorating it at some point over the next year. Here is kinda what I want it to look like.
Makeup is next, I'm pretty terrible at makeup. Anything that looks good in my bedroom mirror ends up looking messy or just strange when I look in the mirror at school, and I have to try my best to clean it up. I really want to learn how to do makeup that is flattering and not too obvious.
The sixth category is clothes. My wardrobe is basically just whatever is wearable from primark at the moment, and I live in leggings and t shirts. I'm not working with much of a budget here, but I'll put some pictures of clothes I really like. I also want to find my style, and not be so terrified of wearing anything that isn't jeans.
The last category is hygiene. This is super embarrassing but I don't always brush my teeth when I should, I usually can't be bothered to epilate my legs and sometimes I forget deodorant. I'm also super paranoid that I secretly have really bad breath and I don't know about it. This is kinda obvious but my goal for this is just to be clean.
I hope this doesn't come off as vain or something... actually, I don't care. It's too embarrassing to post anywhere right now, maybe I will when I'm 18 and I think this is really cringey and funny, but for now it isn't gonna happen. Anyway, I don't have anything else to add so see you December 31st.

✨ first, a disclaimer! this is a list of things which i have found to subjectively improve my own appearance. i’m sure there’s many more treatments i’ve missed, and you may also feel that some of these treatments aren’t for you- i’ve just included everything which i have enjoyed personally in order to inform you of your options, from which you can make your own decisions on which to take part in. also, little blurb; what society or others think of you doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things and it is not my goal to promote being concerned with these things here. these are meant to help you be more excited about your own appearance every morning when you wake up, and take more time and care for yourself. partaking in these activities should add to your life, not subtract. ur all cute and valuable already ✨
also second disclaimer: i initially tried to make an amazon storefront as i thought i could put all the products i mentioned on one page so you could have access to them easily, but it turns out regular people can only get an amazon affiliation. this means that if you buy anything through the amazon links i provided, i’ll receive a very tiny percentage of the profits. this doesn’t benefit you, nor does it make the price higher for you, but if you’d like to support what i’m doing, it would be cool if you bought things through the links i provided. if you hate me or something, you can just search and buy them through amazon yourself! these are all products that i used and bought from amazon far before i signed up for the amazon affiliation, i’m just genuinely obsessed with amazon but i’m not affiliated in any way with any brand i mentioned.

✨ 𝕙𝕒𝕚𝕣  ✨
bleach/dye: personally i am a huge fan of foil highlights! tons of gals look amazing with dark hair or their natural hair color, but i have found that, for me, they really brighten the face and add depth to my hair. you could also darken your hair, do balayage, or tone it a different shade. i always recommend going to an actual well-rated salon rather than attempting to do it at home. they can ensure you’re getting the proper undertones and the correct volume developer for your hair. if you’re getting your hair bleached, look for a salon that uses olaplex or a similar bond builder in the mixture to avoid completely damaging the structure of your hair. at home, i tone my hair to remove gold/brassy tones with either this pravana mask, or a tiny amount of this semi-permanent violet hair dye mixed into my conditioner (you should only leave this in for a minute the first time as it can be very strong). i’ve found most purple shampoos are quite harsh, especially on fragile hair, so i always go for conditioner.
at-home protein treatments: if your hair is damaged from dying or styling it, i highly recommend using a protein mask on it at home once a week when you can to restore the structure of your hair. olaplex no 3 is a popular option but i really like this k-beauty collagen mask for a way cheaper option that works just as well in my opinion! many brands make protein and keratin masks though so feel free to order whichever you like.
cleansing conditioner: if you’ve used every “hydrating” and “repairing” shampoo + conditioner under the sun but your hair is still dry or fragile, i recommend using cleansing conditioner instead! shampoo, even sulfate free ones, can create friction and cause tearing in your hair, but cleansing conditioner cleans your hair without stripping or damaging it! i love this one from renpure and it’s a lot cheaper than other cleansing conditioners like wen, which i found to be less effective and weigh the hair down. if your hair does ever start to feel a little weighed down or oily, use shampoo to clean it more deeply- i tend to use it once every 1-2 weeks depending on how much i’ve been working out. cleansing conditioner will also help maintain a keratin treatment as it won’t strip the treatment from your hair, which brings me to this next consideration...
keratin treatments: keratin treatments are a semi-permanent treatment which help to make your hair quite a lot straighter, and much smoother, softer, shinier, and dry quicker! these help so much if you have frizzy or damaged hair, or your curl pattern is super irregular like mine! curly hair is beautiful too but if your curl pattern is tough to manage and make look pretty, then they’re a great option. a lot of people ask me if they're damaging but i find that they really help with my damaged fake-blonde hair and my hair stylist agrees, but he said to stay away from relaxers or japanese straightening treatments if your hair is fragile as those can be very damaging! if you’re in nyc, i recommend ‘hair bar nyc,’ their treatments are around $100 and last a couple months before they start to fade. i always go for their strongest solution, the 24 karat.
hair growth vitamins: personally i had short hair for a long time and loved it and still think it looks great on so many people! but i’m currently growing it out, so i’ve been taking hair vitamins daily to speed up the process. any brand works, but i love this brand ‘hair anew’ on amazon, or any store-brand which contains extra nutrients like zinc and pantothenic acid (not just plain biotin) as i feel that they work better and also clear my skin. they also help grow your nails longer and stronger, your eyebrows thicker, and your lashes longer and thicker!
hair extensions: these are less common/necessary, but for girls whose hair is much shorter than they want it, is damaged from bleach/dye/heat, or whose hair is quite thin, clip-in extensions can be a game changer. i’ve had tape-in extensions before and found that not only did they damage my hair and thin it out incredibly badly afterward, but they also truly were a lot of work to style and still looked bad after half an hour of trying to get it to work. a pair of clip-in remy extensions should also only set you back $60-100 while any sort of semi-permanent extension is far more expensive. i currently have this brand fullshine from amazon but it may also be wise to find a beauty supply store where you can match your hair to the extensions. this is also a great method of showing your hair stylist exactly what color you want your hair dyed to be! and pro-tip, never ever use shampoo on your extensions if you want them to last more than a month before they’re ratty and you need new ones. only ever wash them with plain conditioner, every couple of weeks!
shower filters: if you live in a place which has hard water, this can make your hair more brittle, dry, frizzy, tangled, and even make your hair a shade of green, due to the dissolved minerals drying in your hair. i installed this water filter in my shower to purify the water. it only takes 5 minutes; you simply twist off your showerhead,  twist the filter on, and then twist the showerhead back on. they also help with acne, eczema, and dandruff! i definitely noticed a difference in my hair softness when i got one.
leave-in treatments: i figure my favorite leave in-conditioners and serums are worth a mention here! i’ve been using the same 2-3 products for several years and i’ve never found anything that works as well as them. the two non-negotiables for me are it’s a 10 leave-in conditioner with keratin, and either biosilk or chi silk infusion. and if and when my hair is very dry or damaged from recent bleaching, i also put some moroccanoil on the ends.

✨ 𝕖𝕪𝕖𝕤 ✨
brows: at-home tinting is a quick and cost effective way to make your brows more defined! i’ve used henna dyes before, which also dye the skin beneath the brows and make them look extra thick, but i found that lighter colors were always more orange than “light brown.” instead i love and use this brand of lash/brow dye. i don’t buy their developer- i just followed a reviewer’s instructions to mix equal parts hydrogen peroxide and dye, and it works great! and obviously choose the color which suits your hair color. also worth mentioning, the light brown can be quite light or quite dark depending on how long you leave it on so start with 5 minutes and go from there!
also, of course always keep your eyebrows well-shaped! if you’ve never had them shaped before, it’s a good idea to get it done professionally first and then maintain it at home with tweezers. i’m a big fan of benefit brow bar for waxing! they have stand-alone locations or smaller bars in a lot of ulta’s.
lashes: getting your lashes done is a great way to feel more done-up even without makeup! lash extensions are amazing at defining your eyes and making them look bigger and more awake, but they’re also a lot of money and upkeep. personally i love lash lifts as i have long lashes (from hair growth vitamins woo) but they just don’t curl very well and are super blonde; a lash lift dyes and curls them and lasts far longer than extensions with no bi-weekly touch-up appointments! if you're not opting for any treatments, i’d still recommend hair growth vitamins to grow your lashes longer!
you can also dye your lashes at home! i’ve tried at-home lash lift kits several times and i found them all messy and completely ineffective, possibly due to my lack of skill, but i couldn’t personally recommend them as of yet. i would recommend at-home lash tints though! if i don’t currently have my lashes curled and tinted from a lash lift, i will use this dye, which is the black version of my eyebrow tint, and use the same hydrogen peroxide formula as described above, to dye my lashes black. it’s great if you’re lazy with makeup, going swimming, or wanna look a lil extra cute when you're at home.

professional facials are a great option if you want to feel pampered, get extractions from someone who knows how to do it properly, or get an intensive peel or mask. but they can also get incredibly expensive, while some of their treatments can be done entirely at home!
physical exfoliation: this is pretty important for basically any skin type, in order to remove dead skin cells! you should avoid harsh scrubs, like those with walnut shell, as they can create microtears in the skin. sugar-based scrubs are safe, but personally i use either of these two items:
-facial brushes! i got a clarisonic years ago, and i love it! if i remove my makeup, then wash my face with my hands, but then wash my face with the clarisonic, there's generally still makeup that comes off on the brush. i would recommend a clarisonic but there’s now highly rated much cheaper versions on amazon so i don’t think i’d recommend spending $100-200 on one when this $33 version with similar sonic vibrations is available.
-microdermabrasion is a great, more advanced option, for removing dead skin cells and helping to clean out your pores. the ‘diamond’ tip runs along your skin to exfoliate dead skin cells, while a vacuum pulls off the skin cells and unclogs your pores. they are a bit more expensive- i got this $90 one for christmas and love it, though there are also similar ones which run around $60 and also have great reviews. i only use this about once a week.
chemical exfoliation: this is great for brightening up the skin. whenever my skin simply looks tired, dull, or congested, i opt for a chemical exfoliant. there are tons of chemical exfoliant options, but my go-to has to be these pads by dr dennis gross. they consist of 2 pads- one with the acids which will exfoliate your skin and one with a neutralizer- and only take about 5 minutes total to use! they are an all time favorite, as i see a difference in my skin right away, but aren’t so harsh that i get any redness or peeling afterwards. the ordinary is also a great skincare brand for all kinds of acids and oils for really cheap! they make a peeling solution which one of my friend uses and she loves it, and i’ve tried a lot of their products over the years and loved them too.
general masks: there are tons of different masks to help with different skin problems and skin types. basically, you've got clay masks for oily skin, hydrating masks for dry skin, and undereye masks for when you're tired as hell.
radiofrequency machine: i first found out about this from stephanie shepherd’s top shelf interview. it’s somewhat commonly used in high end facials, and my friend who is going to cosmetology school said they're great for acne and skin tightening! to my understanding, it works by killing bacteria in the skin, and stimulating blood flow and collagen production. the one i have is only $40, which makes it seem too good to be true, but apparently studies have shown they’re effective in wrinkle reduction, and i’ve found it really helpful for making breakouts heal faster.
other products: i haven’t actually found many other products that i think are a “holy grail” item, besidesss the embryolisse lait creme concentre. i have really dry skin, especially in the winter, and actually bought myself the smallest jar of la mer available this past christmas to see if it could help, but i found it to help absolutely nothing. the lait creme, though, has made my skin actually look like normal skin again, when it used to be extremely flakey and irritated. it’s known for commonly being used backstage at a lot of couture fashion shows, which sold me on it initially lol.

✨ 𝕤𝕞𝕚𝕝𝕖 ✨
teeth whitening: i use crest whitestrips to whiten my teeth at home! i’ve found them really effective, but i’d recommend using them a bit less often than the instructions recommend. the kind i have recommends using them daily at first but, anytime i’ve used them two days in a row, my teeth were sensitive and in pain for a whole day afterwards. otherwise they’re great though, just space them out a bit!
also, of course, floss and brush your teeth morning and night! i’d also recommend adding a tiny bit of baking soda on top of your toothpaste, to help with whitening. i used to do this daily back in high school and started actually getting compliments on my teeth being white.
lip filler: as many of you know, i’ve had lip filler done, and I've received a lot of questions about them, so i thought i’d include the basic rundown here. these obviously aren’t something that you should feel ugly without. your lips can be beautiful whether or not you’re following this trend. personally, i never thought i would get lip fillers, but last year i did start noticing that when i smiled in pictures, my top lip would totally disappear. i was hesitant but went and got my lips done knowing that it would dissolve in time, and i ended up loving them and feeling totally glamorous with them! i must caution you to avoid getting too much “lip flipping” done if any. over time, my injector started putting the filler around the edges of my lips to flip my lips out and make them appear bigger. it’s okay in small doses, but some injectors start cutting corners and over-doing it, which leads to the “duck face” look, and my lips have started to look slightly pursed even at rest, but are also completely lacking volume in the middle. i’m getting them dissolved and re-done soon, but let this be a lesson to you to ask for little to no lip flipping, and ask for the filler to be more in the center of your lips. before lip flipping, no one ever seemed to notice i had anything done, then suddenly after two appointments with lip flipping, everyone and their mother started asking if ive had my lips done. so i’d highly recommend them, with that caveat in mind.

 ✨ 𝕙𝕒𝕟𝕕𝕤 + 𝕗𝕖𝕖𝕥 ✨
manicures: okay so you can do your nails at home if you’re doing regular polish, or even if you're using an at-home gel polish set. you should file them into a nice shape (i prefer them round as opposed to square, as they’re less likely to break), push back and trim your cuticles if needed, and paint them. but personally i love getting acrylics or dip powder! i always get tips added if my nails aren’t very long at the moment, and i feel that it makes my fingers look longer and more elegant and feminine. either way is cute though!
pedicures: okay so getting a pedicure at the salon is a great experience, but i also see no reason to get one given that i can just trim and paint my toenails at home. i would highly recommend ordering some peeling foot masks though- these are the ones i have. they’re these little plastic sock masks that you leave on for an hour, take off, and then ~3 days later an entire layer of your skin starts peeling off and your foot is baby soft. if it’s taking a while to peel off, go soak your feet in a bowl of warm water or in a bath/shower and scrub it off. i used to sit with a foot exfoliation machine for like 20 minutes whirring away at my feet but with these you can just chill on tumblr for an hour and then a few days later  your feet are totally renewed.
Tumblr media
✨ 𝕓𝕠𝕕𝕪 ✨
self tanner: self-tanning is probably my #1 beauty tip. honestly i’d give up makeup, conditioner, whatever, as long as i could hold onto my bondi sands dark tanning foam. a good tan makes you look so fresh, healthy, glowing, and fit and toned. before tanning, you should try and exfoliate yourself in the shower. i use a scrubby mitt, specifically this one, which also comes with an actual tanning mitt and a mini facial tanning mitt for applying your tanner. afterwards, you’re going to want to apply some lotion on your knees, elbows, and heels, as these areas tend to be dry and soak up more self tanner and turn darker than the rest of your body. then just apply your self tanner all over with a tanning mitt, and blend well. i swear by bondi sands dark foam! st. tropez gives me an allergic reaction personally and a lot of other ones smell bad or have an orange guide-color, but bondi sands smells like coconut and has a really pretty cool-toned tan guide-color. (DHA is the active ingredient in self-tanners- its a clear chemical which reacts with the skin cells and turns them darker after a few hours, while the initial color that you see right out of the bottle is the guide-color. self-tanners will market their tan as “not orange” or something like that, but this only refers to the guide-color, not the tan itself, as they all contain DHA which turns skin the same color. regardless, i love that bondi sands has such a nice guide-color, so even when i’m pale, i can just throw some on and run out the door looking tan!) after a week or two, your tan is going to start getting patchy no matter how many layers you’ve added, so you’re either going to want to exfoliate as much off as you can and do a fresh new tan, or if i have time i’ll apply the bondi sands self-tan remover before exfoliating to get virtually all of it off.
glitter: this is a bit more out-there, but i love love love using shimmery lotions on my body. i feel like a fairy princess, but also it gets rid of that chalky flakey dry look my skin can get in the winter. before swim shoots or the victoria’s secret fashion show, models are always getting slathered in shimmery lotion or oil. there’s a lot of expensive shimmery body oils out there, but you can also just make your own with cosmetic mica and your favorite lotion (i use a gradual tanning lotion to keep my tan looking fresh). cosmetic mica is basically what they use in all the shimmery makeup you buy, and it doubles as an amazing highlighter or eyeshadow!

basic tips: i’m by no means a makeup guru, but i do feel as though my makeup skills have strengthened a lot since i was a little hippie at 16 years old who just wore hemp lip balm and organic powder foundation sometimes, so here’s some tips i picked up since then. i did also take a one-day makeup masterclass in LA with a celebrity makeup artist who has done the kardashians makeup, which is where i learned virtually all these tips:
✰  let your moisturizer sit for a few minutes before applying foundation ✩ beauty blenders tend to be far better for blending liquid makeup into your skin than brushes  ✰  using just one shade of foundation on your face can make your skin look flat. either use a few different shades of foundation, or a light concealer and a darker contour stick, to add dimension to the face. also, use 2 or 3 different blush colors to add dimension  ✰  blend. more than you think you need to. your foundation, contour, blush, eyeshadow, everything. just keep blending.  ✰  don’t make your eyeliner too thick along the entire eye. this makes your eyelids and eyes look smaller. it should be thin until you thicken it at the outer corners of your eyes.  ✰  as for the rest, fill in and brush your eyebrows, wear a lip color that goes well with your skin tone, highlight the inner corners of your eyes to look more awake, use a setting spray if you want to look dewier and make your makeup last longer ✰
if you’re curious about my full makeup routine here are all the products i use:
✰  embryolisse lait creme concentre moisturizer  ✰  giorgio armani luminous silk foundation  ✰  tarte shape tape concealer  ✰  anastasia beverly hills contour stick in ‘mink’ ✰  too faced born this way setting powder ✰  wet n wild blushes in ‘mellow wine’ and ‘apricot in the middle’  ✰  huda beauty rose gold eyeshadow palette (this is pretty but doesn’t blend super well you should probably buy the abh modern renaissance palette)  ✰  stila micro tip eyeliner  ✰  too faced better than sex mascara  ✰  abh clear brow gel ✰  eyebrow powder, doesn't matter what brand but i got tamnova at the makeup course so i use that. thin eyebrow pencils are good for a natural look but my brows are too thick for them lol  ✰  this cosmetic mica for highlighter  ✰  glossier generation g lipstick in the color leo  ✰
makeup bag: a somewhat extensive list of on-the-go beauty products for you to consider carrying with you in your makeup bag:
✰ perfume. you can buy small on-the-go perfume bottles like these and fill them with your favorite scent ✰ lip products, such as lip balm, lip gloss, or lipstick ✰ lotion. i bring a small hand lotion bottle, and also carry a small container of my body lotion and cosmetic mica mixture ✰ mini lint roller ✰ tide stain stick ✰ downy wrinkle releaser fabric spray ✰ eyelash curler ✰ foundation powder ✰ mascara ✰ mini hairbrush ✰ mini dry shampoo ✰ mints, mint gum, or mini mouthwash ✰ mini deodorant ✰ summer’s eve wipes ✰ hydrating facial mist ✰ blotting papers ✰

3rd February 2020
8 weeks on testosterone.
Hi all. Time for an update.
It's been 2 months now. I haven't posted anything because...well...not much has happened. I know progress with hormones is slow but fucking hell.
Content warning for body ickiness, menstruation, genital talk.
General Stuff
I mentioned in my 20th of December 2019 update that my weight and body fat measurements had changed. So here's an update.
Chart as before.
Tumblr media
I have put on a lot of weight now and tbh I'm not sure why. My appetite has weakened a lot. I'm snacking a lot less and having more regular meals (which isn't to do with hormones and more to do with me recovering from eating disorder).
I am however drinking a LOT of water. Thorsty boy.
Talking of thirsty....
Sex Drive
Not sure how much people on here know about me, but I'm a sex favourable asexual guy. I have experienced sexual attraction but...rarely and not consistent to people so I dunno what's going on.
I also usually had a very low libido. In the past year my libido had been going up naturally, and as is typical with testosterone it now has had a boost as well. I don't feel necessarily any bigger drive to have sexual contact with others, but knowing it's easier to turn me on had had me curious as to if I could be more casual about sex, despite not having sexual attraction. I won't go into it but it's been interesting.
Genitals
Hi again! It felt like my growth had stopped but recently taken another look and I don't think you could look at it and think it belongs to a cis woman. The head now peeks out of the foreskin most of the time and I can pull it back to reveal the whole head which is very bright pink. I know a lot of guys complain about over sensitive genitals at this time but such hasn't been the case for me. But then I have quite a bit of fat and hair down there so that's probably keeping me protected. Though touching the head doesn't feel overwhelming like it used to before I was on T.
Menstruation wise, still regular as clockwork. Lasting longer than they did before (used to be 3 days, now 5 or 6) and now I get period pains which is!!! Not fucking nice considering I have been very lucky to miss them most of my life.
Skin
My skin is maybe getting a bit oily. I have regular spots on my face but nothing too dramatic. Eczema is in full force but again I keep forgetting to take my antihistamines so that is probably the culprit. I might invest in something to help.
Hair
My hair has definitely become more greasy. It used to cycle between feeling soft and fluffy when washed, then dry and easy to manage, and then flat and greasy. Now it seems to jump right to flat and greasy. Interestingly I've had less dandruff. But that makes sense if my scalp is more sticky. Hair isn't falling out. Hairline doesn't seem to have changed (it has always been kinda square as per the picture).
Mood and Attitude
Definitely not having angry outbursts as some people report. Haven't cried since my last update. But I've had no reason to and never been much of a crier anyway. I'm more confident for sure, but I've also moved home recently. Out of a stressful situation so that says a lot for my more positive outlook.
Face and Fat
My face is fatter because I've put on weight. I'd say on regard to fat distribution my face hasn't benefited. Actually none of me has. All my extra weight has gone to my hips and back and added to my muffin top/love handles. I hate it. It reminds me of when I was on the contraceptive pill. :/
Voice
Nope. No change yet. Actually I read up on it and apparently some guys never experience voice changes...especially older guys as our cartilidge is less inclined to grow. And some guys end up with a broken voice forever. So... I'm terrified of that. As a singer the thought kills me.
Body and Facial Hair
No change at all. Might try minoxidil for beard growth but chances are it won't do anything because nothing is growing at all yet.
Concerns
If I'm honest, I don't think the T is having a proper effect. It could be because I'm using testogel and have some sort of issue with absorbing it but my suspicion is my body is turning it back into oestrogen (hence the body fat stuff and heavier periods). I'm trying not to worry about it too much until my 6 month appointment. But it's frustrating.
Overall...
Very downhearted. Everything else in life is pretty good and this is the only real thing bothering me, which probably just makes it feel worse but I'm coping. Bought myself a packer as a treat to help with some dysphoria.
Until next time folks x

Tonight, I'll take a shower (My life as an autistic young person #26)
(I wrote this text a few months ago to help people understand how taking a shower can be overstimulating and exhausting for autistic people / people with sensory issues in general. It is inspired by my personal experiences, but it is not written from my point of view. The POV given is that of a young autistic person who uses the pronouns she/her and has a woman's body. I still chose to include it in my "My life as an autistic young person" series because I think we are right in the topic. Hope this clears any misunderstandings and will give you a little insight into my character's mind!)
Tonight, I’ll take a shower.
That’s what she’s been repetitively telling herself for almost a week now. She knows she’s dirty and she feels dirty too. The hair that hangs on her shoulders is oily, sprinkled with dandruff flakes that make her scalp itch and way darker than usual. Her skin’s itchy too, stud with eczema patches and small wounds which the origins are unknown to her – are her nails really that sharp? She looks at them, wavering suddenly, and realises that she should have cut them a long time ago indeed.
Well, I’m going to cut them. She heads for the wardrobe where the small pink safety scissors are kept, takes them and goes back to her room.
After having pulled the trash can near her bed, she trims the nails of her left hand with a careful concentration, then the nails of her right hand with a bit more difficulty. She hesitates for a few seconds before drawing her feet towards her to trim the nails painted in light blue.
There, now that’s done. She goes upstairs once again, cleans the scissors before putting them back in the wardrobe. It is very important for her that every object has its own place in the house so she can find them easily. Her memory isn’t that good lately, and there’s no point in drawing on it even more.
She closes the wardrobe, sighs then lets her prying gaze wander over the living-room. She needs scissors – real scissors – to cut her armpit hair, but she already knows that she won’t find any. Her relatives hid all of them so she won’t “mess about”, as they always say. It disrupts her plans, but it doesn’t bother her that much.
Because she is well aware that she’d be able to mess about once again.
***
TW: mention of eating disorders
TW: mention of self-harm scars
TW: mention of physical violence (scars left on the body)
TW: mention of sexual assault
Alright, I’m going to take a shower. Here and now. Suddenly I feel like taking a shower.
And there she goes, pulling together the clean clothes she has chosen and hopping up the stairs. Head held high, she heads straight for the bathroom, hangs up her clothes, goes back and takes a towel, and finally locks herself up in the room.
And there she is, before the big mirror that reflects her from the head down to the waist. She looks at herself, or rather watches herself. She’s observing this stranger who copies every one of her movements, tilts her head just like her, knits her brow just like her. She then lifts her hand, slowly waves at her – the other person waves back at her, greeting her in return, and her smile lights up her face all of a sudden. Her face darkens right away – she doesn’t like her smile. She’s been insecure about it for a while. It’s weirdly shaped, her lips rolling up and baring her teeth just like a beaver, too much of her gums exposed.
Feeling immensely frustrated, she unbuttons and unfastens her clothes with shaking, clumsy hands, weighs herself (oh crap, she slimmed down again), looks at her naked body in the mirror for a moment. Oh dear. There’s the rub.
Something that people often seem to forget is that there’s actually many people who got a complicated and not so healthy relationship to their body. Some people suffer from eating disorders and have a completely distorted vision of their body, believing themselves to be fat while they’re not at all. Some people are fat for real and hate the way they look. Some people are skinny, deemed too slim and hate the way they look (this applies to her.) Some people have a normal weight and hate the way they look.
Well, this is complicated anyway. And let’s not forget the people who have been injured and wounded, whether they self-harmed or have been harmed by other people. These wounds can leave marks that scarred but will never disappear. And we must not forget the people who have been sexually assaulted and hate the body that’s been subjected to such a disgusting physical attack.
Anyway, this is not the time to lose oneself in such deep reflections, that’s not going to transform the world. What she can do is loving herself first and foremost. So, feeling reassured, she sends a last smile to her reflection before turning her back and getting in the shower.
***
And that’s where the ordeal begins.
Sounds of water running.
Water splattering her body.
The temperature going abruptly up and down when she turns the tap in search of the perfect warmth.
Feeling like drowning when the water spreads all over her head.
Wet hair stuck to her nape.
Quick! Quick! Choose the shampoo with the sweetest smell (here, sweet almond, “moisturizing & detangling”, that’s it.) Quick! Quick! Cover the whole hair with shampoo. Quick! Quick! Rub with both hands till it foams.
The smell of sweet almond that tickles her nostrils. (She may like this smell, but it still makes her dizzy.)
Fingers saturated with the foam from the shampoo. (It gets a burst of laughter out of her because it brings her back fond memories. Oh, the good old days where her parents were in charge of bathing her…!)
Leave on your shampoo at least two minutes, so it will have time to act on the hair. Humming a familiar song in order to self-soothe, she proceeds to the next step.
Quick! Quick! Choose a body wash with the most discreet smell (here, a body wash which the smell isn’t specified, that’s it.) Quick! Quick! Rub it on your whole torso down to the hips and wait another few minutes.
Astonished, she looks down at herself, runs her hands along her waist. Did she slim down? That’s what the weighing scale whispered to her before, but she refused to believe it until then. Her left cheekbone is a little hollower too. Oh sh– shoot! Yet she tried hard to eat more! It looks like all the efforts she makes are never rewarded…
And once again, to distract herself and divert her own attention, she starts to sing softly. She doesn’t dare singing in a louder voice since she could incur her family’s wrath, but that’s something she can’t help doing when she’s stressed out or struggles to express her feelings. Hearing her own voice, that she thinks of as one of her few strong points, comforts her an awful lot. That’s also her way of stimming.
The two minutes have largely passed, for her hair just as for her body. Quick! Quick! She rinses her back and torso to get rid of all that foam that bubbles on her skin. Quick! Quick! She rinses her hair, running the fingers of her left hand through the thick strands to make sure they are “slippery” enough. Quick! Quick! She follows the choreography again for the lower part of her body.
Now clean as a new pin, she finally steps out of the shower. She dries herself, patting vigorously her hair that has mysteriously brightened up, letting guess some blonde hair locks. She puts on slippers and the clothes she has brought.
Before unlocking the door, she breathes out a long sigh of relief. She should be clean for a few days at least.

Note
What are three things that you like about yourself?
So I went to a public elementary school and a private middle school and then a public high school. What this meant, in practical terms, was that I was a weird sort of social outcast when I started as a freshman in high school: I was a familiar face (because I had gone to elementary school with everyone), but I was for all intents and purposes a stranger to these same people who had just spent the last three formative years together. This was very tough for me. I was stuck; it wasn’t like I could start over and introduce myself as a new person in school would, and I also couldn’t really hang out with anyone because I didn’t know them.
in the very beginning of the school year, my mom took me to get a haircut. During the haircut, the barber acted a little funny and went over to talk to my mom. Fearing the worst (and I already had bad dandruff) I thought I had lice - but it was something much worse: Gray hair. I was 14.
My hair went gray very quickly. To set the scene a bit: I was 6 feet tall, fat, bad dandruff, terrible rashy eczema on both hands, and now had gray hair. To say that I “stood out” would be an understatement (I also wore comicbook t-shirts almost exclusively). I hated myself. But what could I do? Nothing. So I just… Dealt with it. What did I have? Well, I was funny. And if I was going to have to stand out in every situation, then fine: I would be outspoken, I would shake people’s hands, be a good honest person, and be as friendly as possible. And it worked! I ended up joining our theater guild, and found like minded outcasts like me. Did I talk to girls? Nope! Did I hang with the cool kids? Nope! Was I happy? You fucking bet I was. I was learning something important without knowing it: That there are always people out there who are just like you, and who want to be your friend. And that being yourself can be a powerful thing.
Since then, I’ve lost weight, grown taller & got rid of my dandruff and rashes (okay, most of my rashes) - but I’m still weird & funny. And obviously still have white hair. And something that made me an outcast way back when is now one of things I like most about myself - I stand out in a crowd, I’m memorable to those who I meet, and my snow cap has become a calling card for me (not to mention the fact that I’ve been gray since I was 14 means that I look like I don’t age). I love my white hair, and wouldn’t trade it for anything else (I’m also way too lazy to dye it).
So just remember: The things you think are fucked up about yourself can be your greatest assets. Quirks and weirdness are what make people unique, and in my opinion, being unique is what life is all about. Lean into what makes you “you”, and you can’t go wrong.
