Vocaloid Familiarity Survey...DATA!!!

hello, i posted a survey to gauge the general familiarity of vocaloid characters that I (emphasis on I) consider basic or surface level (with a few wildcards thrown in which i will address in this summary) after grieving the lack of non-miku vocaloid fan merch. just how much do people know about vocaloid outside of miku? her friends? her friends' friends? and so on.

the survey was by no means perfect (this was my first attempt at this) but i received some great feedback from the survey takers to better improve the experience the next time i host one.

if you just want a basic summation of the results, here ya go--overall familiarity (that is, recognition of name/design/both summed up) organized into an iceberg tier list. including the individual percentages would have been So SO much so i crammed it into the alt text of the iceberg.

(tiers are in order. the only tie was big al, sweet ann, and an excluded lola. i'll address her and leon in the summary) the rest of this post will be going over some of the results as well as reflecting on the survey itself, its shortcomings, and a possible sequel with improvements :)

FIRST OF ALL: EXCLUSIONS

i am so so so so sorry for not including your fave on the survey, even if they had a realistic level of popularity! i either straight up forgot or didn't think they were that relevant or arbitrarily decided "nah this might be too far, don't wanna scare anyone off" before deciding to include more obscure synths. yukari fans in particular were very vocal about her exclusion, and i totally get it!! i also get the confusion in the exclusion of seeu and maika (the main korean and spanish-speaking loids respectively).

out of the other synths i didn't include, i wish i included yukari, seeu, maika, mayu, iroha, yohioloid, the rest of the isotopes, and the rest of the vsingers. you'll notice i included the rest of starry court + the tokyo6 girls even though they expectedly did pretty poorly among general audiences. i almost scrapped saros, nyl, karin, and chifuyu, but was like "what the heck might as well complete the full set right". and then did not extend that grace to kafu and tianyi's friends!!! aughh!!

also, EARLY on in the survey, i included calne ca as a character to recognize, which some ppl didn't get since unlike other fanloids she didn't really have an associated "voice". while this survey was more about the fandom and character side rather than the music, i figured it was a fair point since i didn't extend similar grace to several other fanloids without significant voices like mikudayo/hachune miku/more. so in order to just remove it from the picking or without fucking up the sample size by adding more questions after the fact, i just removed her.

leon and lola stayed on the survey till closure, but when i was tallying up the results i decided it didn't really make sense to include them (at least the way that i did). i'll discuss this more when i talk about fan designs.

1 - what went down

so based on the results of the iceberg, i was about expecting these types of results with a few surprises here or there. it should come to no shock that ol' reliable hatsune miku scored a 100% recognition rating. 99.7% respondents recognized her name and design. curiously, a SINGLE respondent (.3%) only recognized her name.

the rest of the top tiers are nothing surprising. the rest of the "cryptonloids" near the top were expected (for those OOTL: cryptonloids refers to vocaloids made by crypton future media, miku's parent company, and therefore are the ones that appear alongside her in all officially sponsored events/merch/games/concerts/etc. so they're seen A Lot). meiko was a bit of an outlier and the only one among the six to score below 90%, which was sort of surprising? like, perhaps she just doesn't have as much vocal fans compared to kaito idk. gumi and teto, the non-cryptonloids, are also no surprise to see up high. gumi is very popular, especially back in the day where she was THE girl for your english vsynth song. teto has seen a massive resurgence through many sources, most of which stems from her synthv voicebank and songs made with it. mesmerizer and its copycats, daemon doll, on top of general nostalgia. teto was also huge back in the day considering triple baka. she's older than luka just short of a year, so she was included in some OLD songs (or at least their mvs) before luka even existed.

a rung below that is also fairly standard, minus my slight surprise for meiko scoring in a different tier from her friends. neru's standing comes to no surprise due to triple baka/classic music videos including her as well as a slight resurgence in relevance through people including her in mesmerizer. mikuo, a derivative of miku, did a bit better than i thought. as i expected, the art trend where people redesigned him gave him a bit of a leg up in recognition. also, the general concept of his character is just... very straightforward to grasp just by looking at him, so i wonder if that also played a role.

i expected yuki to do a little bit better, maybe even better than gakupo, who did worse than i thought. yuki's been going through a renaissance in recent years like through the work of inabakumori, yukopi, and yes whether we like it or not, the ensuing drama that surrounded hiiragi magnetite's "zako". but still, scoring above 70% is nothin' to sneeze at. i SWORE gakupo would do better tho, idk! i'm surprised even fukase surpassed him, even by less than 1%. i associate gakupo as being part of the main friend group. several ensemble songs (namely the hitoshizukup x yama variety) include him alongside gumi and the cryptonloids.

the 60-69% threshold is the middle ground, and for the most part it's a little mundane and expected. lily (and leon, who is not here but if he was would be between lily and una) did a bit better than i thought, though i think i can see it. before i knew about ia and mayu (i feel rlly dumb for not including her bc as i said i'm a yamashizuku enjoyer and mayu is usually included in 10-vocal ensembles augh!!!), i considered the main vocaloids after gumi and gakupo (numbers 9 and 10, since that's how i conceptualized it) to be lily and miki. i think several pieces of older fanart that feature popular vocaloids, ie the cryptonloids + gumi and gakupo, often threw in lily and miki as well. i wonder if lily's artwork being done by kei had something to do with this? i wasn't there at the time haha i just consumed vocaloid thru youtube reuploads and not so much with the community when i was a kid.

as we travel deeper down the iceberg, we drift far away from the vocaloid software and more into alternative vsynth softwares and their characters. while my variety in software included in the survey was fairly basic, it came to no surprise that among the general responders, synthv/cevio/utau characters were less recognized.

the bottom tier, in that case, makes perfect sense. saros, nyl, and chifuyu are particularly young voicebanks (nyl being the youngest on the list, released october 2024).

qi xuan was INTENTIONALLY a cheeky curveball saved for the very end and i'll admit it was extremely funny seeing people whose otherwise perfect streaks ended up slipping when she showed up at the end. qi xuan is the only ACE virtual singer i know, so might as well use her to rep the software, right? i figured she might have had some legs to stand on thanks to her recent appearances in kikuo's latest songs. sure enough, the majority of people who recognized her at all only knew her name and didn't recognize her design. in fact, she was the only synth where more people only knew her name rather than both name and design.

2 - regarding fan designs

something a little unorthodox about the survey was that i included fan designs for kevin, yi xi, and kinda vy2 ("roro" is semi-officially acknowledged, acknowledged enough to have his own spot on the fandom wiki, so i think he's a special case). my thought process was this: from my perspective, kevin and yi xi were probably the most popular or well-known faceless dreamtonics synths. but they don't really have a design to recognize. no one really uses the letters, not that i know of in original songs anyway. my logic in using ivylare's mr kevin synthv design and vimalion project's yi xi design was that they were probably the most recognized fan designs for dreamtonics loids. IN MY OPINION. the former's meme status + the latter's inclusion in butcher vanity meant that this would be the necessary push to give responders a reminder "hey in case this random fucking letter doesn't ring any bells, maybe this fan design will?"

BUUUT i acknowledge that is a bit of a leading question and doesn't actually consider OTHER popular fan designs these two (and all the other faceless loids for that matter). The Most popular fan design is actually pretty subjective tbh!! so i'm sorry if my inclusion of certain fan designs might have been confusing to any survey takers. however, i still included kevin and yi xi's results in the icebergs since the inclusion of the fan design, flawed as it was, was still a Character to recognize (which their original letters Certainly Were Not), which was the point of this whole survey.

The same could not be said for how i handled leon and lola. i'll admit, these two were a stretch even when i was making it. i cheated a bit and included them to gauge whether responders knew their vocaloid history rather than their vocaloid characters. so if anything i probably should have left them as a bonus question at the end idk. i didn't include fan designs for them because uh from my perspective, they don't really have a widely accepted super duper popular fan design? but i could be totally wrong on that, again this is a very subjective and tricky subject i was not ready to go into! so i just left them as is for the history question. considering this while i was tallying the results, i decided it didn't make sense for them to be included, so i cut them from the iceberg. if they were included, as previously mentioned, leon would be between lily and una, and lola would be tied with big al and sweet ann.

3 - the sqeakwel?!?

i do plan on making a follow-up based on the lovely feedback i got from the folks that took my survey (though this could be months from now, i'm a bit busy + google forms got very laggy with just like 45ish characters so augh). YES, i will be blowing up the scope way more to make sure no one feels left out. i might be a bit shaky on faceless loids (would miriam count? her box art is her VP's face but there's not exactly much else to go off of hhh), they might get their own section dedicated to various fan designs (but how do you account for all of them ?! or the most relevant ?!?!). there's also the goliath of a question that is How Do You Possibly Narrow Down The Roster of Utaus For Another Survey. utaus and similar tech like diffsinger can be made by anyone, so it just isn't realistic to include everyone. i thought about using vocadb + my own knowledge but idk? if anyone's got suggestions i'd love to hear it.

some other demographic questions were suggested by feedbackers will also be included. one that popped out to me was asking what years the survey taker was invested in (and possibly fell out of) the vocaloid community, which could provide some insight on which characters are recognized compared to others. like, who would someone who hasn't thought about vocaloid since 2012 recognize vs someone who got into it in 2020? this is an interesting question and i'd love to see what would come out of it.

some feedback suggested providing voice samples since some vocaloids have appeared in songs that people might not realize they've already heard (like avanna's appearance in several porter robinson songs. this could possibly solve the conundrum i had with kevin and yi xi). i am a liiiittle mixed on it idk? maybe this is just me but i feel like several factors like voice colors/multilingual voicebanks/the definite possibility someone might not recognize a voice from one source and connect it to another might make collecting data on this kind of messy and unreliable. like yi xi's vb is natively recorded in mandarin yet her most popular song is in english, idk i feel like there are a couple of factors to consider when showing vocal samples (i also do not have access to every voicebank so i can't make consistently neutral do-re-mi samples for them). i DID consider this by including song links (which i think some people also had in mind) but i didn't want the question to be Do You Recognize This Song. and again, i feel like there's a possibility there could be a mixup or the recognition doesn't come but idk i might just be deaf. lmk your thoughts!!

Here is a quick (maybe long) run down on how to get into Evillious Chronicles!

Starting off with the novels since you mentioning trying to find where you could read a translation of them. I found this post with a bunch of unofficial translations for the series that includes the novels and the booklets though when I’ve tried to click on the links to read the novels, I’m unable to read them for some reason but it may work on your end.

So for me at least I’ve been reading the Evillious Chronicles wiki to understand the lore since it also has information from the novels and booklets. Sometimes wiki’s aren’t the best sources but in this case it kinda is since it has the most information about the series that regularly gets updated when new songs/novels/any of information gets dropped. So your safest bet right now would be to read the information on the Evillious wiki until you’re able to find English copies of the novels yourself.

But for actually starting to get into the series I would recommend starting off by listening to the songs before jumping straight into the lore as you may find yourself very confused as the lore revolves around the songs. And here is a little background on the start of series itself; Evillious Chronicles created by Akuno P or more known as Mothy nowadays started back in 2008 with Daughter of Evil series (Story of Evil). From 2008 on, Evillious Chronicles grew to what it is today and is still being updated with new songs, novels, etc. And technically Evillious Chronicles is kinda the first Vocaloid series, starting a little before Kagerou Project from what I remember.

After listening to all of the songs, I would recommend not only reading up on the lore to better understand what happens since things do get confusing but also watch Evillious Chronicles explained videos which will be linked below. Some of these videos may be a little outdated or the creator of the video interprets the lore wrong but the videos may be able to help you understand the lore too if reading the wiki/novels start to stress you out.

I'm the same anon who asked about the song lyrics. I actually didn't know that the booklets contained the song lyrics, only the album description things, and I totally forgot about the online shops. For some reason, I always assumed that new songs would always be bundled together into an album, but I suppose that's not exactly the case? They could be standalone and stuff? That clears up a lot actually. Thank you for clarifying!

I know that the popularity of physical albums has taken a nosedive since the advent of streaming, but in my experience it's pretty standard practice to include lyrics with song booklets. ...But then, I don't know if that's true of most Japanese works. Mothy's the only Japanese producer I've bought albums of, and he's admitted a very heavy Western inspiration in his music.

Well--no, they are bundled into albums. There are some instances where you can buy them individually online, but they would still be part of an album "set", as it were. AFAIK mothy always puts them in physical albums because he will sell them at VOCALOID conventions. Occasionally he'll have a song release as part of a collab, in which case it'll be on an album with other song artists as well, but still--on an album.

btw i wanna apologize if the profiles look "inconsistent", this is gonna sound weird, but i worked on everything, including the profiles, the vds, the mv descriptions, etc, for a couple months and it's like, basically if i had some free time, i worked on those things, so i had some things in my phone notes, if i had my tablet with me, i wrote something in my notes there, if i wasn't having any problems with my computer, i used it instead. i know that it would make much more sense to just have everything in one place, but because of some stuff, i wasn't able to do it that way. i often forget to edit some things, like i forgot that i don't need to write "kei's t2 profile" in his profile and i also forgot to change "non-deco*27 cover" to "different vocaloid producer cover" in eiko's profile. also my computer keyboard is kinda broken which. makes things a lot harder to write and even though i have a second one, IT'S ALSO BROKEN AND IT'S EVEN WORSE. sooooo uhhhh yeah sorry djsksksls

General info.

T1 Verdict: Asahi was voted innocent and he sure was happy with his verdict! Haha, he totally expected to be forgiven, no, he knew that he's gonna be forgiven. I mean, they had to forgive a child, they wouldn't punish someone as young as him, right? Asahi's hair grew a little bit longer between trials, so he got a new hairstyle. He also got a new outfit, though it's kind of similar to his T1 one. Even though he was voted innocent, he still has a bandaid under his right eye because of Yurika's attack and yes, it's definitely not as serious as Akio and Kei's injuries, but he still likes to remind everyone how much of a victim he is. Like, look at him, how dare Yurika hurt a poor child like him? He got a few other scratches because of her, but they have already healed and there's only one left now.

T2 Personality: Asahi, surprisingly, is more polite now and he doesn't swear as often as he used to. At least that's what it seems like on the outside. Asahi is happy that he got forgiven, but he's secretly very afraid of being voted guilty this time, so.. Why not start acting like an even more "cute" version of himself? People will love him more if he starts acting nicer and more obedient, right? It doesn't mean that he really is nicer now though. When nobody else is around, he will gladly make fun of the guilty prisoners, go back to his usual manner of speaking and bully those who are even weaker than him. And if anyone even tries to accuse him, he will start crying and claiming that this never happened. And well, Miki can't help but forgive him again and again, even though this kid is trying to manipulate not only the guards, but also the other prisoners. He even steals food and other things from the guilty prisoners. He doesn't even need those things, he just does it because.. uh.. because.. Well, because he deserves them!

T2 Relationship dynamics:

Yeah, Naomi and Asahi's relationship is.. not good, to say the least. It's very sad to think about, when you remember how much Asahi wants a mother figure and kinda expects Naomi to become one, but she's not interested in that at all and clearly hates the kid. So no matter how hard Asahi tries to make her like him, she just ends up hating him even more. Honestly, if it wasn't for the guards, she would've probably already killed him, he annoys her that much.

Obviously, Asahi dislikes Yurika now, and when other people are around, he doesn't hesitate to remind them how bad she is and how he's still in "so much pain because of her". However, when there is only Yurika around, Asahi suddenly stops acting so brave and tries his best to avoid her. He knows that Yurika isn't afraid of the guards, so even if they try to stop her, she will attack anyone who makes her angry.

If Naomi and Asahi's dynamic makes you sad, don't worry, because Eiji and Asahi both hate each other equally! <3 Eiji hates him because he still finds him annoying and suspicious and he doubts that Asahi deserved to be forgiven, but he can't say anything because he's Miki's brother. Meanwhile Asahi is very protective of Miki and he thinks that Eiji will end up hurting her one day, so he keeps his eye on him and sometimes purposefully asks Miki to hang out with him so that she doesn't have to spend time with Eiji. Both of them hate each other, but for Miki's sake, they try to hide it.

Asahi likes Miki so much, even though it may not be obvious because of his personality, but he does. He may ask her to spend time with him so that she stays away from Eiji (but also so that he can show Eiji that "she likes Asahi more"), but sometimes he actually wants to help her feel better. He can even share his food with her sometimes or ask her to play with him. Yes, Asahi is a terrible and very annoying kid, but he's also still just a kid.

It makes me very sad to think about the last lyrics ("That body of mine disappeared, well then, where shall I go?"), because Asahi was kicked out of his new home by his adoptive father and he just.. walked, trying to find a place to stay or someone to ask for help. It's even more difficult than it already sounds, because his biological parents are dead and his adoptive mother as well, meanwhile his adoptive father doesn't want to do anything with him for a good reason. So.. yeah, he really had nowhere to go. It's highly possible that if he wasn't able to get any help before getting kidnapped and being brought to Milgram, he would've died of starvation or some other reasons (he could easily end up in a lot of dangerous situations because of his mental state), which makes him being the most demanding prisoner more understandable and really sad.)

As you've probably already guessed, Asahi really wants to be forgiven again, though it's hard to say if that will happen, considering his behavior.

Speaking of his verdict, interestingly, his VD shows him in a much more innocent light, but his MV shows him in a more guilty light and the ending is particularly creepy. It's like the opposite version of Kei's situation, because I personally think his VD still shows him as someone who's more "guilty" and his MV definitely shows him as someone who's more "innocent".

He's actually gonna reveal a lot about his murder this time!

Since Asahi's thoughts were affirmed, this is one of the reasons why he tries to act more "cute" and "soft" this time. To be honest, he thinks that he got forgiven only because he's a cute child and not because of his crime being understandable and something that can be forgiven, so.. yeah 😔

All the tribunes and the entire plate in the stadium was filled with fans who were just singing accapella one of the songs of the fair-haired female idol. There were colorful posters everywhere, screens with VCRs on them, and black, big cameras with flashing lights. There were also bodyguards and medics around, as well as people responsible for sound. In between all this you stood – with a small mascot in your hand and a tiny but cute banner with a clearly pasted name and a big, red heart. 

There are less than two minutes left until the concert starts.

You were excited, happy, amazed, but also terrified. A hundred emotions and thoughts swirled in your heart and head; you’ve been dreaming about this moment for over four years, that is since you first heard the song of the then sixteen-year-old star.

Suddenly all the lights went out, the crowd fell silent, all you could hear was the voice of the guy with the earpiece, who started slowly counting down from ten. Tears of happiness welled up in your both eyes. You were counting under your breath with the man, and when you said ‘zero’ together, the stage lit up with colors of white, light blue and green. Everyone around you started cheering and squealing, and Hatsune appeared in the middle of the huge stage, which was decorated with several props and dancers. This was the moment – the moment you’ve been waiting for since you got the tickets.

“... Welcome everyone!” The twenty-year-old shouted to the cheering crowd of fans, and then the first welcome song began.

Together with everyone, you sang at the right moments, chanted the name of the young idol, and also tried to wave at her and show a cute banner with her name. Those were wonderful moments, full of joy and a fast beating heart. You watched with big eyes as Miku danced, smiled, waved towards the stands and sweetly encouraged everyone to play and jump with her.

After the first few songs that made your heart glow, it was time for the first panel of the night, where Hatsune talks to the fans.

“... Good evening once everyone again!” She screamed as soon as she caught her breath, and everyone in the stadium screamed again, you too. “Thank you all for coming to my concert! It means a lot to me, really...! Remember about fun, safety and water. There is help around if needed. Today’s concert is especially important to me...” She said calmly, and no one dared to disturb her. “Today is the fourth anniversary of my debut! So at this point I would like to go back to those beautiful times and at the same time give special thanks to everyone who has been supporting me for years. Love you all, guys!”

At that moment, you could have sworn you made eye contact with her, and she smiled at you and only you... However, perhaps it was a false effect, caused by emotions and tears. You weren’t sure...

However, when the next song and the sound of the electric guitar started, you forgot everything again and your mind went back to the moment when you heard her debut song and album for the first time.

MASSIVE TW: Mentions of Overdosing, bullying, suicide, drugs, Thoughts of self harm

Some Context:

This is an AU of a Kaiju Paradise rp me and a friend made where what we think would have happened if these Characters weren’t exposed to Laminax Labs at a Young age.

This is told from the perspective of Kanade Yukimura, an Idol/Popstar which gives an explanation as to why she takes a break near two specific dates each year since the beginning of her career in an interview with a Journalist. Below is what was said in the interview.

Ever since Fourth Grade, Me and my friends had to deal with our own personal issues that we’d tell each other, One of us had it bad. Koneko was one of my closest friends. We did everything together and we even started dreaming of becoming idols together. when we hit fourth grade Koneko started being bullied by some kids in a higher grade than us. At first, it started as just insults on her comfort clothing and Interests and Koneko was able to take it because she knew it was ‘weird’ and that's why she liked it, but the bullying soon escalated and started getting physical.

The kids, who were in seventh grade, would Constantly push and shove Koneko when they got the chance to and Koneko seemed to try her best to not engage because whenever I and our friends convinced her to go to teachers, counselors, or even the principal about it but they’d just tell her to ignore it or ignore her. One day those bullies pushed Koneko down the stairs and she was rushed to the hospital, she awoke a week or two later, and I was so happy she was alive that I didn't care about anything else, this is when Koneko started to spiral deeper and deeper into depression though. In first grade, Koneko started drawing, and by fifth grade, she started showing us her drawings.

At first, her drawings were adorable usually drawings of her special interests at the time such as Pokemon, Vocaloid, or My Little Pony but the bullying started getting worse, Koneko couldn't go into the hallways without being harassed by her bullies, and watching her suffer pained me. I tried to help, I tried to protect her but we were younger and weaker and I already suffer from a condition that makes me even weaker than I already am so every time I tried to help I always failed and I’d be forced to watch as she got hurt over and over after I was harmed.

By seventh grade, Koneko’s drawings started getting concerning. It went from just fan art of her favorite media to more gore and vent art, she always disguised it as her own original characters or from series like The Evilious Chronicles and I didn't want to question her about it as I didn't want to seem pushy or even seem like I'm trying to be invasive of her personal problems.

Koneko always carried a diary, she never let anyone read it and kept it to herself due to it being one of the only times she could talk about her problems. Buck, Blaxor, and I knew she was Genderfluid and how she liked girls, she had written that in her journal because what kid wouldn't? After all a journal is a kid's written safe space after all. Somehow during P.E. One of the bullies broke into the locker Koneko’s diary was in and stole it, During lunch we used to sit together at the lunch tables and that's when it happened, The kid who had her journal and outed out many of her secrets including her gender identity and preference, She never stepped a foot in that cafeteria again.

Eighth grade rolled around and Koneko had become a shadow of her former self, she stopped drawing and burned her journal one day, she started falling asleep in class and would push me, Blaxor, and Buck away and no matter how hard we tried to help her, she never let us. One day Koneko got access to drugs, I can’t remember what grade we were in but I remember that day very clearly up to a certain point.

I went to visit Koneko that day because I was worried about her, Blaxor’s Dad had to pick her up because she had expressed thoughts of self-harm in one of her assignments and Konekos father was supposed to keep watch of her due to ‘the schools concern with things at home’, Konekos sibling Hex wasn’t home and was at military school so when I entered I was hoping that at least Konekos father was at least there, but the house was empty, I felt a sinking feeling, I slowly walked to Koneko’s room hoping that the feeling would go away and started asking if she's okay and if I could come in. There wasn’t an answer so I said I was going to go in and check on her, I gently opened the door... and Koneko was there.. on the floor with a bottle of pills in her hand.

I froze, I didn’t know what to do, I must have blacked out or I blocked out that part of the memory because the next thing I knew, I, Blaxor, and Buck were at the hospital, I was praying to every God possible at that moment, Hoping that Koneko would wake up and be okay. Luckily she woke up and I was so happy about it that I started crying, all that mattered to me at that moment was that she was alive. She was sent to a mental health facility after she was discharged from the hospital and I would visit along with Buck and Blaxor, she seemed so much happier there. When Koneko returned to school the bullying started again and it got worse.

Someone told the whole school about Koneko’s suicide attempt and being at the mental hospital and so many people would say horrible things. It was from things like “she's crazy” and “she's unstable” to things like “You should try again” or “Next time you try to overdose do it right”, This caused Koneko to Push everyone further away and it got to the point the only time she talked to us it'd be online with our group chat and even then it would always be with short phrases.

I Liked her, Like really liked her, I never told her though because of my fear of rejection but I wish I could go back and tell her that I loved her because I look back and realized that maybe those three words would have saved her.

It was ninth grade and the school year was nearly over, we just had three months left and at this point, Koneko never talked to me or the others as much as she used to. They had broken her down and she went from a young and hopeful child with dreams to someone I didn't even recognize anymore, she lost her spark and what made her so joyful. I realize it now but Koneko had been planning it for a while because one day she seemed so happy and gave Blaxor, Buck, and me her most valuable and sentimental things. She gave me a lot of her stuff like her guitar. I should have realized what she was doing due to the sudden shift in behavior because...

it took her away from me...

It was a Thursday and It was lunchtime. I was eating on the rooftop because we no longer sat in the cafeteria after the incident, I saw Koneko come from inside the building and walked to the Fence that surrounded the school's roof. I saw her climbing it and my vision started getting blurry and I started blacking out as I realized what she was doing, I screamed her name to try to get her to stop but as my vision cleared...

She was gone.

I don't remember much after she jumped. According to people who were there, I tried to climb the fence too but two kids grabbed me and held me back telling me that I had so much to live for and just trying to calm me down. The school was put on lockdown after a while. I could feel my phone Vibrating like crazy as Blaxor and Buck spammed the group chat. I didn't care. She was gone. I couldn't stop her. I knew she was suffering. I knew she was hurting, I saw the signs and I didn't do anything. An hour later, the school called the parents to pick up their kids as there was an incident at the school. Buck and Blaxor found me on the rooftop with the two other kids as no one came to get us. Of course they wouldn’t, that school didn’t care about us.

Buck and Blaxor tried to ask me questions but I couldn't hear anything, I could only hear a high pitch as I tried to process everything, I just refused to believe it. We went home and I just locked myself in my room, I refused to eat dinner or even any food after that, I felt sick, I felt like I was to blame because I saw the signs if I did something she would still be here. I felt disgusted in myself because I felt that because I didn't help her, I was just as disgusting as those kids that pushed her over the edge.

I didn't go to school for a month, and I refused to face the kids who were the reason Koneko was gone, turns out she survived the fall and was in a coma, I felt a sense of hope that she would be okay but...

Koneko’s father decided to just let her go...

Now she was truly gone...

I spiraled and barely ate any food, I just couldn't bring myself to be able to eat because of flashbacks to that day. It hurt and it still does. I considered self-harm and even considered Suicide to escape the pain I was experiencing that barely anyone took seriously.

I returned to school a month later and talk about that day was still happening. I couldn't take it, I felt sick, I started getting dizzy, and passed out. I remember waking up in the nurse's office and she asked me if I was okay. She's the only one who cared about any of us, She was a mandated reporter though so I lied and said I was okay.

That same day an assembly about suicide was scheduled to happen, it also served as a memorial for Koneko. I hate that school, and I still hate it to this day, During the assembly, I blocked out everything the school said because it was all a lie, It was just lies and I hated it, I heard kids snickering and laughing during the assembly, I felt sick again, I hated being there. I walked out of the gym, Shaking and in tears and called my mom to take me home early.

I convinced my mom to let me stay home the rest of the year as I couldn't take being there anymore, she told me that I still would have to attend school next year which I agreed to.

I look back at everything that happened and I wish I did something, I still blame myself for it and I’ve been told that it’s not my fault but if I just did something she would still be here.

I kept her diary and her guitar. Her father reluctantly gave me her phone with everything still on it, I never changed anything on it.

On her birthday and on her deathdate. I always play her favorite song on her guitar or the piano with Koneko’s Brother, Hex. I listen to the music she used to listen to, watch the media she used to indulge in, and even try do things that she wished to do in life, Such as becoming an Idol.

I might be crazy for doing all of this but I don't care about what others might say. That school and the people in it broke a girl who simply wanted to grow up like every other person on this damn hellscape of a planet. I’ll keep living and I’ll fight on as a way to Inspire others like we wanted to do.

Okay so the basic premise of the game (story-wise, gameplay-wise it's basically just a standard rhythm game) is that if a person or group of people have strong enough feelings, it makes like a parallel universe called a Sekai. A Sekai is basically like a manifestation of their feelings, and it has vocaloids in it that act like therapists. The story follows five bands and their Sekais.

  Hazel was diligently typing away at her computer. The latest proposal was coming together quite nicely so she decided to take a quick break and rest her eyes. As she stretched her arms, Kiki ran over to her desk excitedly.

“Boss! You got an invite to a photo shoot!”

Hazel turned to her subordinate while sporting a confused look.

“Huh?”

“Yeah! This company saw our Group Fairytale Wedding shoot and they want you and Gavin to participate in their upcoming magazine spread.”

Hazel pondered over the invite for a bit. Tossing the idea back and forth; she finally responded.

"Well, what’s the theme?”

“It didn’t really mention the theme but it did have an email and phone number to contact them. Let me pull up the email.”

Kiki commandeered Hazel’s computer and pulled up the invite in question. Hazel looked it over herself but still remained skeptical.

“I don’t know… and I don’t even know if Gavin would be up for it.”

Just then, Minor piped up.

“Boss, you know he would if you just ask.”

Hazel jumped at Minor’s sudden appearance.

“Minor! Don’t scare me like that!”

Minor just grinned sheepishly.

“Sorry, Boss”

Hazel let out an exasperated sigh at her subordinate.

“I’ll just give this company a call later.”

Later that day, back at her place, Hazel stared at the phone number she typed in. She hesitated a bit before pressing the dial option. After a couple of rings, a male voice answered.

“This is Twisted Dreams Photography, how may I help you?”

“Hello, is this Jacob Cordova?”

“Yes, how can I help you?”

“This is Hazel May from Anaheim Electronics Company. I’m calling in regards to the photoshoot invite.”

“Ah yes! Thank you so much for calling back. I saw your promo shoot and was floored at your chemistry with the groom you were with. Compared to everyone else, you two stood out the most to me. Do you think you can both participate?”

“Well, I’m not sure. I would like to know more about this photoshoot, if you don’t mind sparing some details.”

“Of course. I apologize for not including that in the email. Okay, the theme for the shoot is Twisted Romantic Fairytale. I was hoping that would be our Red Riding Hood and your friend would be the Big Bad Wolf. Nothing explicit or too risqué and you’ll be able to take the outfits home after the shoot. The article itself will be featured in the popular magazine CosPLA and of course, you two will get copies of it before it even hits the shelves. So what do you think? Will you accept?”

“That sounds delightful, but let me talk it over with my friend and I’ll get back to you as soon as possible. How soon do you need to know?”

“Can you respond in the next few days?”

“Yes”

“Awesome. Oh, and I’ll need measurements from both of you as well. Your outfits will be tailored to you both. I look forward to hearing from you, Miss May. Have a nice day.”

“Thank you and you too.”

Hazel ended the phone call while sinking back into her couch.

‘Will Gavin even be available? Crap, I didn’t get the date for the shoot’

She proceeded to text Director Cordova.

-I forgot to ask when the photoshoot takes place-

Five minutes passed and Director Cordova responded.

-July 29th-

Hazel paled at the date, Gavin’s birthday. She really hesitated before responding.

-Okay, thank you-

She pinched the bridge of her nose and sighed. 

‘That’s Gavin’s birthday. Is he really gonna want to do something like this on his birthday???’

She let out a frustrated huff as she scrolled through her phone contacts, finally landing on Gavin’s name. Hazel paused for a bit, then pressed ‘dial.’ Gavin didn’t pick up and it went to voicemail. Though not even two minutes later her phone rang, Gavin’s name was on the screen; she quickly answered.

“Hey Hazel, are you okay?” His question laced with concern.

“Yes, yes. I just had a proposition but I don’t know if you’re up for it.”

“What is it?”

“Well, remember that shoot we did a while back?”

“Yeah”

“Well, another agency saw it, particularly us, and wanted to know if we were interested in being a part of their photoshoot.”

There was silence on the other end, then he responded.

“Hmm.”

Hazel went on.

“The theme is Twisted Romantic Fairytale and you and I would be dressed as the Big Bad Wolf and Red Riding Hood.”

Again, silence, and little longer than the first pause.

“Uh, Gavin? Did I lose you?”

“No, no. I’m still here”

“What do you think? Would you be interested?”

“Hmm, when is it?”

Hazel gave a small squeak.

“Yeah, that’s the issue I have… It’s on your birthday.”

“Oh?”

Hazel got nervous over his answer so she tried to back pedal out of the awkward conversation.

“If you’re not interested, that’s totally fine. I can call up the director and —-“

“I’ll do it”

Hazel blinked and questioned if she heard right.

“Huh?”

“I said, ‘I’ll do it’”

“A-are you sure?”

“Yeah. I had fun at the wedding shoot, this might be fun too.”

“But… your birthday…”

“Look, as long as I’m with you, it doesn’t really matter what we do for my birthday.”

Hazel gave in to her boyfriend.

“If you’re sure then.”

“Yes, I’m sure.”

“Then I’ll confirm it with the director. I’ll also need your measurements too, when you get a chance. Talk to you later”

“Sure thing, bye”

After she got off the phone with Gavin, Hazel then texted Director Cordova with the official confirmation.

July 29th: Day of the photoshoot.

Gavin was leaning up against Sparky while he waited for Hazel to come out of her apartment building. A few minutes later, she came bounding out, excited to see her boyfriend.

“Hey Birthday Boy!”

She handed him a small gift box.

“What’s this?”

“Open it and find out, silly”

Gavin went ahead and opened the small box and held up the necklace that was inside. It was a simple black leather cord, done up cinch style. The crescent shaped pendant was made of obsidian with a silver outline. Hazel beamed at the birthday boy.

“I saw it and thought that you would like it”

At this point, Gavin hadn’t said anything yet, which made Hazel anxious.

“I-I figured it wasn’t too flashy, a-and it can long or a choker and—-“

A chuckle interrupted her rambling,

“I love it”

She put the necklace on him and admired how it looked against his white shirt.

“You want it to hang down or be a choker?”

“Hang down, please”

Gavin caught her hand and kissed it, causing her to blush a tomato red.

“Thank you, my love”

Hazel flustered but manage to croak out,

“A-anyway, we should get going or we’ll be late!”

Hazel guided Gavin to the facility with some time to spare. As they headed in, they heard commands being barked out. A tall, lanky man clad in blue jeans and a black t-shirt, Jacob Cordova was busy setting up.

“Hey! I need some lighting over here, please!”

A studio helper came by with some fake foliage.

“Sir, where do you want this?”

The director looked up from his tablet and then looked around.

“Uh… Oh! Over here would be good, thank you”

He eventually spied Hazel and Gavin walking on to the set, he lit up immediately.

“Welcome! I’m glad you two were able to make it. I really appreciate it!”

“Pleasure to be here,” Hazel said while extending out her hand. They shook hands, and then the Director instructed them to go to the makeup area and get ready.

Gavin was greeted by a young makeup artist. She was dressed in blue denim capris with a black Muse tank top. Her hair was short, spiked and streaked purple, which brought out her blueish grey color eyes.

“Hello, I’m Trish. Nice to meet you.”

“Nice to meet you too,” Gavin said as they shook hands. Trish went behind the changing curtain and got his outfit for him: black, ripped jeans, dark blue, ripped t-shirt and black combat boots. She then got a good look at his eyes.

“Oh! Your eye color is perfect! You won’t even need the contacts,” she said, marveling at Gavin’s unique eyes. However, Gavin felt a bit awkward at the friendly scrutiny.

“That’s great…?”

“Oh Yes! The contacts are a real pain to wear. Okay, go get changed. Oh and we’ll keep your jacket as part of the ensemble. I’ll be back to do your makeup”

Meanwhile, in the room next door, Hazel was greeted by a makeup artist from Australia. She was clad in black denim shorts with a blue, baby doll, Vocaloid shirt. Her jet black hair was pulled back in a high ponytail, her green eyes glimmering as she adjusted her glasses when Hazel stepped in.

“G’Day. My name is Nancy. How are you today?” 

“I’m good, maybe a little nervous,” Hazel answered as they shook hands.

“All right then, let’s get your outfit,” Nancy said with a nod. She ducked behind the curtain and came back with the Red Riding Hood costume. It was a different twist on the whole look: red and black plaid dress that stopped just above the knees, a black corset with red lacing, black fishnets, and black wedge heels. The red hood part was about four inches longer than the actual dress and it tied in the front, the sleeves flared out and stopped at the wrists. Hazel was a little apprehensive about the length of the dress but went along with it anyway.

Gavin waited outside in the hall for Hazel. A few minutes passed and she emerged from the changing room. He uttered a barely audible “wow” as she smoothed out her dress. He could feel a slight blush creep up his face as he looked at her. Hazel finally looked up at Gavin and it was then her turn to blush. 

“You look amazing!”

She spied the necklace she gave him earlier around his neck. Gavin blushed even more; he then cleared his throat.

*ahem* “Shall we go,” he asked, holding his arm out to her. Hazel giggled a bit and then grabbed his arm. She noticed all the makeup details on him as they walked over to the set. The first thing she pointed out was that his actual ears were expertly hidden.

“How did they cover your ears?”

“Uh, with some extensions, they’re annoying though.”

She then saw the fangs the more he spoke.

“Oh! You have fangs too!”

Her gaze dropped down to his hands, then marveling at the claws on them. Gavin felt his face get warmer as she examined his hands more closely.

“They did a wonderful job on you,” she said as she reached out to touch the wolf ears on his head. 

Director Cordova hailed them down when he saw them reach the set.

“You two look wonderful! Okay, come with me and we’ll get started.”

The director led them to a small forest scene where they did various generic poses. He seemed pretty satisfied with the shots but he wanted to ramp things up a bit. 

“Okay, for this next shot, could either of you do something unexpected or surprising?”

The two photo subjects looked at each other, unsure on how to respond to this request. Hazel then had an idea. In a bold fit of spontaneity, she grabbed Gavin’s shirt and planted a passionate kiss on his lips. Wide eyed with shock but not making any kind of move to stop, Gavin just stood there as the clicking of the camera shutter rapidly went off. Hazel broke the kiss off to breathe and immediately flushed a bright red over the realization of her action. Gavin’s blush nearly matched hers as he looked away. They both turned toward the excited clapping coming from the director.

“That was perfectly executed! Hey, listen, you two take a break and be back here in about an hour and a half and we’ll finish the last few shots. How’s that sound?”

Somewhat bewildered, the photo subjects both responded with an “okay.” There was an awkward silence between the two as the director and crew walked away. Hazel decided to break the silence.

“I’m really sorry if that was way too bold of me,” she apologized while fidgeting with the hem of her dress.

“It was definitely unexpected,” Gavin’s voice lowered, “though not unwanted.”

Hazel blushed a beet red once again, and then noticed the somewhat weird placement of his jacket. She went to take the jacket off his hands but he denied her that action. 

“Are you sure you don’t want me to hold that?”

It was now Gavin’s turn to blush the beet red.

“Uh no, no. That’s gonna stay right where it’s at.”

Hazel gave her man a curious look and then caught on to the meaning behind his refusal. Her eyes went wide with shock.

“Y-you’re…?”

“Yeah, that bold little kiss caused it, thank you very much…” he responded, feigning indignance.

She blinked and looked around, then gestured to lower his head.

“Should we, you know, take care of that?”

He scoffed at the idea.

“Where exactly?”

He gave her a skeptical look but soon saw the gears turning in her eyes; she most definitely had a plan.

“I’ve been to this facility quite a few times so I know there’s a couple of storage rooms down that way,” she pointed towards a hallway. 

“And they’re usually unlocked, follow me.”

They made their way down the corridor, thankfully no one was around. Hazel tried the first door; much to her dismay, it was locked. They moved on to the next door which wasn’t locked. After successfully ducking into the room, Hazel promptly locked the door behind them.

Hazel turned and pounced on Gavin, causing him to stumble backwards into a wall. A flurry of fervent kisses ensued as Gavin turned to pin Hazel against the wall. Since time was dwindling fast, they hastily disrobed their lower halves. He then hoisted her to wrap her legs around him. Hazel snaked her arms around his neck to further close the gap between them. Warm breaths intermingled in the anticipation for what was about to transpire. His hard length slipped in smoothly causing Hazel to bite her lip, stifling a moan that threatened to escape. The fear of potentially getting caught made Gavin’s thrusts quick and intense; he had to bite his own lip to keep quiet as well. The clenching of her walls around his length was a sure sign that she was close. As both of their coils snapped, they locked lips to swallow each other’s moans. Heavy panting still prevailed as they came down from their sexual high. Gavin buried his face into the crook of her neck, trying to steady himself as he pulled out of her. Her legs were like jelly as she tried standing on her own. She looked around the room for something to clean themselves with and found some brand new packages of paper towels. She handed a paper towel to Gavin who was gathering up his pants and shoes. 

“Well, that happened,” she said, giggling.

His hands came up to cup her face and kiss her.

“Happy Birthday to me,” he said into the kiss. They both gazed at each other lovingly, the afterglow still present in their faces.

“There are bathrooms down the hall, let’s get cleaned up better there,” she instructed.

“Right.”

They cleaned up and headed back to the makeup rooms to refresh their looks. Not much had to be done with Gavin’s look but Hazel had some issues. Nancy took one look and was a little worried for Miss Riding Hood. 

“Whoa, is it blazing hot outside,” she inquired, noting Hazel’s messed up eye makeup.

“Yeah, a little bit,” Hazel responded sheepishly.

Ten minutes later, both Gavin and Hazel headed back to the set where Director Cordova was waiting for them. 

“All right, let’s get this last shot and then do some reviewing of the photos.”

The final shutter click signified the end of the photoshoot. The three of them sat in front of the director’s computer and started to pick and choose the best shots for the article. 

“Awesome picks! Here, give me a minute,” the director reached for a thumb drive  and transferred all the photos taken that day.

“Here, for you two, and I’ll be sending a copy to each of you before it officially releases.”

Hazel’s eyes lit up with delight.

“That’s great! Thank you so much!”

“Thanks to you two, this’ll be an awesome spread.”

As Hazel and Gavin walked out to where Sparky was parked, Hazel nudged his arm to get his attention. He turned to her and leaned in to hear her whisper.

“I think we need a repeat performance but this time, “ she paused, “we can be as loud as we want.”

The tips of his ears flushed a bright red but the smile never left his face.

Two weeks later, they each received a copy of the magazine. Hazel headed over to Gavin’s place to look the article over together. They marveled at how well the article was written and put together. They were also surprised that some candid, ‘behind-the-scene’ photos were included as well.

“This came out really well, huh?”

“Yeah, I like this shot especially,” he said while pointing to one of the candid shots where she was smiling brightly at him. Hazel blushed a bit before responding.

“That’s a good one, but I like this shot a lot,” she was pointing to the ‘unexpected shot’ with Gavin’s shocked expression. He cleared his throat.

“You would like that one,” he chuckled as he placed a kiss on her forehead.

“I love you, my Little Red Riding Hood.”

Hazel leaned in close, nabbing his chin in the process.

“And I love you, my Big *kiss* Bad *kiss* Wolf.”

This is their highschool years btw and its about Hizashi, Shouta, Oboro, Nemuri, Kan and Tensei having a halloween party and also having a contest on who could have the best costumes! And the two winners would be going on a date. This was set up by Nemuri, Oboro, Kan and Tensei cause they know that Shouta and Hizashi had been dancing around each other for a few years and they wanted to help. So yeah XD Hizashi goes as Hatsune Miku! Which as he likes to call it, Present Miku! XD

If only he had put a bit more effort into his costume, his friend Kan wouldn’t have felt as personally offended. 

“You know, you could have at least bought one from the dollar store instead of wearing your black curtains as a cape,” Kan remarked, crossing his arms. 

Shouta shrugged as he sat down next to Oboro, “I wasn’t going to come in a costume, but Nemuri warned me that if I didn’t dress up then she would make a scene on my birthday.” 

“What type of scene?” Oboro asked, getting comfortable on the couch as he opened his tenth candy wrapper for the night. 

“She didn’t specify, but honestly, I‘d rather not know,” Shouta responded, laying back on the couch as he gestured for Oboro to grab him a candy from the bowl. 

Even if it wasn’t his original idea to attend the party, he had to admit, Tensei’s house was pretty impressive. From the moment he stepped onto the front gates, Shouta felt out of place with his cheap cape and DIY fangs. As the gates opened, he could see the massive garden filled with colorful plants and fancy statues. There was even a mini pond with lily pads that ran probably the bluest water Shouta had ever seen. 

As he approached the huge double doors, Tensei was already waiting for him with that flashy smile that captivated everyone in class 1-A. With the best grades in the class, and being a descendant from a family of heroes, it was no wonder he became the president of 1-A. 

When Shouta first arrived at class 1-A after transferring from General Studies, he hadn’t expected such a warm welcome from the president. The one from General Studies displayed a high ego and God complex that was unbearable most of the time. Tensei let Shouta feel included the second he entered his new classroom, and introduced him to Hizashi and Oboro - his current two best friends. 

As Tensei let him inside the house, he was greeted by an ecstatic Nemuri, who was wearing a scantily clad Poison Ivy costume. Already seeing Tensei’s detailed costume of Link from Legend of Zelda and the custom made Poison Ivy outfit from Nemuri made Shouta feel like the odd one out with his poor excuse of a costume. It didn’t help immediately getting berated by Kan for “not putting effort into his Dracula costume”. Though he had to admit; he completely forgot about Kan’s attendance and how...insensitive it would be to come with a poorly done Dracula outfit. Kan’s family, who all have similar quirks that deal with blood, practically venerate the Draculian lore. 

Kan was dressed as a chef, claiming the film Ratatouille inspired him. Shouta just rolled his eyes at the explanation and walked towards the living room. His eyes scanned the enormous living room, finding Oboro sitting down on a couch that probably cost more than his parent’s apartment. 

He currently sat on that same couch, waiting for the last person to arrive. He sighed as Oboro’s white wings hit him in the face again for the fifth time. His friend opted to dress as an angel, and his explanation was even worse than Kan’s. 

“Well, for one, I am an angel. Two, I am really feeling like acting as Cupid today,” Oboro stated, fluttering his eyes as he smiled at Shouta. 

Shouta groaned, “are you sure it isn’t an excuse to use your clouds as a substitute for pants?” 

Oboro cackled as he handed Shouta a piece of chocolate. They began talking with Kan about the scariest experiences they had with the supposed supernatural. Kan was in the middle of explaining the footsteps he used to hear walking back and forth on his apartment’s hallway at 3 in the morning when the lights were suddenly turned off. 

Shouta looked at Oboro in confusion, who stared back at him with the same puzzlement. Rays of lights invaded the room as a certain pop song blared through the speakers. Shouta winced as he covered his ears. The loud music sort of reminded him of someone…

Tensei appeared from the entrance of the living room, looking unfazed. He turned on the microphone he was holding, which let out an unpleasant howling noise. Tensei smiled apologetically, and sighed before using the microphone to speak. 

“People of Halloweentown, get ready for the greatest pop star of our generation. Please receive the wondrous, fantastic, fabulous, talented, and amazing: Present Miku!” 

Nemuri released a giant confetti cannon, which sprinkled all across the room - blinding Shouta. Of course, Shouta thought, Hizashi would be one for dramatic entrances. 

Hizashi suddenly appeared with a microphone on his hands, and began lip-syncing to the song that was still playing from the speakers. Kan leaned towards Shouta and Oboro as he covered his ears. 

“What song is this?!” He yelled, yet Shouta could barely hear him as the song blasted through their ears. Oboro laughed hysterically as he moved to the beat of the song. 

“It’s a Hatsune Miku song!” Oboro replied, “I think it is called ‘Desert Wolf’!” 

“Is it the vocaloid girl he is obsessed about?” Shouta asked. His ears finally adjusted to the loudness that invaded the room. Someone would have believed he was prepared to be bombarded with sound, considering he was friends with Hizashi, the classmate with a Voice quirk. 

Oboro smiled widely. “What do you think?” he said, pointing at Hizashi. 

A long teal hair tied in pigtails adorned Hizashi’s head, falling to his hips. He wore a grey shirt that traced his waist with a black skirt. Shouta’s eyes lingered towards the bottom, where Hizashi posed with thigh high boots. 

Shouta had to admit, Hizashi looked really nice. 

It was clear that out of everyone here, especially Shouta, Hizashi put the most effort into his costume. He even had the clothing piece on his arms glow a color similar to turquoise. His tie had his name ‘Present Miku’ engraved on the top, with small pins of Hatsune Miku attached. 

Shouta caught Nemuri glancing at him, wiggling her eyebrows. He couldn’t help the slight blush that crept on his face as he looked away. 

The song soon ended, and Hizashi bowed, receiving applause from his friends. Oboro and Nemuri clapped loud and sincere, while Shouta and Kan clapped rather unenthusiastically. 

Hizashi proceeded to plop down in between Oboro and Shouta, putting his arms around them as he hugged them tightly. 

“Happy Halloween you two!” He exclaimed, flashing his brightest grin. 

“Took you long enough to arrive,” Shouta grumbled, leaning towards Hizashi’s embrace. He’s used to Hizashi’s shoulder being his personal pillow as he took a quick nap. 

He didn’t notice the way Oboro and Kan exchanged knowing looks to one another. They looked back to Nemuri, who nodded once in agreement. She approached the center of the room - heels clanking loudly. 

“As you know, there was supposed to be a costume contest,” she reminded, looking at Shouta with those disapproving eyes again. 

“The two people who win will get to go on a ‘fake’ date inside that door,” Nemuri explained, pointing her fingers at the closed white double doors at the right side of the room. 

“Tensei decorated it so that it may seem as authentic as possible.” 

“Authentic to what?” Shouta asked with his eyes closed, still leaning on Hizashi. 

“To a date, Shouta,” Nemuri replied with a smug smile, “so let’s start with the first lucky winner!” 

“Why do we need to do this now?” Shouta complained, “and also, don’t you think it is weird to make two people go on a forced date?” 

“Shut up, Shouta,” Nemuri scolded, being one of the few people that isn’t afraid to argue with him. His intimidating look might work on his classmates, but his upperclassmen friend isn’t threatened by those judging eyes. 

“Alright, remember not to vote for yourself!” Nemuri added, “pick a paper and once you write down your pick, just place it on this bowl.” 

She gleefully walked towards Tensei and sat next to him, writing down a name with her personal calligraphy pen. Shouta sighed as Hizashi passed him a piece of paper and pen. Might as well get this over with. 

He stared at the paper for a moment, remembering the details of everyone’s costumes. He didn’t even know why he was analyzing the costumes when he already knew the answer. 

He carefully wrote Hizashi’s name, tracing back the letters as he finished. He rarely got to write his friend’s name, yet it felt so familiar to him. 

He placed his paper into the bowl, and leaned back on the couch as he waited for the last person to cast their vote. Once Kan, the last one to vote, slipped his paper into the bowl, Tensei grabbed it and started counting. 

As they waited, Hizashi was acting as the DJ for the party, though it mostly consisted of Hatsune Miku songs. Shouta stood up once to grab a piece of pigs in a blanket. As he ate the small party appetizer, he sneaked a peek at Hizashi, who was dancing to the music with Nemuri. Shouta never knew Hizashi was talented at moving his hips. His heartbeat began quickening-

“I have counted the votes!” Tensei announced, beaming in front of his friends. 

“The winner is…” he began, and Oboro began tapping the table to mimic drums. 

“Present Miku!” 

Hizashi squealed, jumping up and down with Nemuri. 

“Can’t wait to see who will be my date!” 

“I feel like I know who,” Nemuri answered, looking straight at Shouta as she winked. What was she trying to say?

“Let’s not waste time and pick the second winner!” Nemuri sang, already picking up her piece of paper. 

“Wow, someone is excited,” Shouta joked in his deadpanned time. Nemuri stuck her tongue out at him before handing him another piece of paper. Shouta sighed again, but this time louder than before. 

Hizashi was busy talking to Oboro to notice Shouta next to him. Shouta wasn’t listening to their conversation - too busy thinking on who he would pick. I mean, it isn’t a hard choice. Just pick the second best costume. 

Still, there was something impeding him from writing another name. He knew it was just a stupid date that meant nothing other than a way for his friends to tease the ones that got chosen. 

Whoever got chosen meant they were going on a “date” with Hizashi. Shouta couldn’t explain why he felt an aching in his heart as he thought about it. 

He brushed off his thoughts and wrote Kan as his answer. He didn’t know why he chose Kan, since he was sure everyone would probably pick Tensei. The speedster definitely had the second best costume at the party.

Maybe it was the thought of seeing Hizashi and Tensei having a happy date at the other side of the room that swayed his decision. He knew Hizashi wasn’t interested in Kan, especially after that time Kan told him about the pet tarantula he used to have as a kid. 

Tensei, on the other hand, always seemed to make Hizashi smile with his stories about his baby brother Iida. 

Shouta could never make Hizashi smile the same way. 

Shouta felt someone flick a finger on his forehead, bringing him back to Earth. He turned to see Hizashi smiling fondly at him. 

“Shouta, are you done?” Oboro whined, “I want to know the next winner!”

Shouta hadn’t realized he was the last one left to place his vote. He quickly stood up and dropped his paper into the bowl as he ignored everyone’s stares. 

“Are you ready to know who your date is?” Nemuri teased Hizashi. The blonde man simply raised his thumb in excitement as he jumped up and down his seat. 

Tensei didn’t take long to count votes, considering there were only six of them. Shouta just sat there, wondering how Tensei felt about receiving most of the votes. He knew he wasn’t going to win, so why did he keep feeling this pain on his chest? 

“Guys, the final vote has been determined!” Tensei announced, standing up from his chair. Shouta briefly caught Nemuri giggling with Oboro and Kan giving a nod of approval to Tensei. 

Now that Shouta thought about it - the four had been acting very suspicious throughout the night. 

“And the winner is,” Tensei started, gesturing for Oboro to do his dramatic drums. 

“Dracula!” 

Everyone in the room cheered, except for two people. Shouta didn’t know how to process what had just happened. He just gazed at Hizashi, who was noticeably pale. 

He was probably expecting someone else. 

“I can’t believe my two best friends won!” Oboro shouted, “don’t try to have too much fun inside there. Got it?”

Shouta noticed Tensei helping Hizashi towards the other room. He noticed the loud hero unusually quiet - blindly following the blue-haired man. His vision was obstructed by Nemuri standing in front of him with a deceiving smile on her lips. 

“Are you ready, big boy?” 

“Nemuri, I don’t know what is going on but this was definitely a set-up,” Shouta blurted, “and I don’t like it one bit.”

“Sure you don’t, grumpy cat,” she replied, “c’mon, your date is waiting.” 

Before he knew it, Nemuri shoved him inside a dining room. The table only contained two chairs and was decorated with a white tablecloth and a rose in the middle. The plates already had a small meal, which included a portion of lobster. 

Hizashi was sitting down, looking back at Shouta with an apologetic smile. 

“I’m sorry they put you through this,” Hizashi said, “I don’t want you to feel uncomfortable.” 

“It’s fine,” Shouta answered a little too quickly. He was still shocked over the obvious setup from his friends. Why would they want him and Hizashi to go on a date?

Did they realize his feelings for Hizashi? Was this a cruel plan to get his feelings rejected by his crush? 

He ignored his thoughts and sat down on the empty chair. The two stayed quiet for a long moment, nervous to even stare at each other. 

Shouta broke the silence, “I don’t know why they chose me. I had the worst costume out of all of us.” 

“I think you look cute!” Hizashi blurted out, blushing deeply as he realized what he said. Shouta’s cheeks also turned into that dreaded crimson color. 

“Shouta…” Hizashi began, hesitance in his voice. The ravenette focused back on Hizashi, trying his best to compose his pumping heartbeat. 

“I guess I feel a bit more confident in this outfit, but I just wanted to say…” Hizashi continued, rubbing the back of his neck. 

“Hizashi just say it,” Shouta ordered, eyes fixated on Hizashi. 

“I like you, Shouta!” Hizashi exclaimed, covering his mouth with both hands after he finished. 

Shouta’s eyes widened at the revelation. His mouth dropped open in shock and the room grew dead silent. Both lay eyes on one another; fear of uncertainty emanating from both of them. Shouta lowered his arms, trembling as he grasped for his utensil. 

“I- I like you too, Hizashi,” Shouta confessed, staring down at his plate. 

“You- you do?” Hizashi cautiously asked, thinking he heard wrong. The silent teenager liked the loud one? Oh, the irony that is love. 

Shouta nodded slowly, playing with his fork. He was surprised when Hizashi began to giggle loudly. 

“I think I should take you on a real date!” Hizashi proclaimed with excitement. Shouta chuckled lightly, still a bit timid over the whole ordeal. 

Shouta was never one to celebrate Halloween, but this year’s would definitely be unforgettable. He was celebrating it with his closest friends. His only friends. 

But best of all, he was spending it with Present Miku - the best pop star in the world. 

“So what do you say?” Hizashi asked eagerly, awaiting Shouta’s answer.

Shouta just beamed at Hizashi - showing off his DIY fangs. 

“I think I’ll like that.”

What music do you like ?

Anything that sounds good haha, I’ve gotten more open to genres over the years (recently I have been into marina, mitski, and florence+machine)

But if I had to say a style, it’s probably whatever music you’d call teen angst. This would include anything from Placebo, Linking Park, My Chemical Romance, Muse, a bunch of J-pop rock bands, and so on. Also rock, especially metal. I was a lot into rock bands during highschool (Iron Maiden is my favorite band– when are we getting a stand after them, Araki?).  I’m also a big fan of His Infernal Majesty (I love Ville Valo so much, what can I say). 

But I’ve also discovered I like mixed genres too. For example, Voltaire’s music is reviving folk music in his own way, and I really like that. Also Trans-Siberian Orchestra which is both classical music/opera and rock, and so are some female-led finish band. There’s a lot of interesting synthesia music that happens nowadays too.

Oh and almost forgot Vocaloid.

When he decides to try lucid dreaming to figure out how to push his story forward, he meets new friends, new enemies, and his literal dream girl. Making certain choices will either help or hurt his relationships, and the outcome of his story.

Introduce yourself!  *Hi! I'm Rindre! I've been working on RPG Maker for about 5 or 6 years at this point! First and foremost, I'm an artist, then a game developer, then a voice actor. I am also a garlic bread enthusiast. You might also know me as: -The voice of Aria/the lead translator in Aria's Story -Will's Teacher in The Hanged Man -The mod of Yumeresource -The admin of the RPG Horror Discord server -The host of the Pixel Horror Jams! I'm also on plenty of teams, mostly as a voice actor. These include b/f, AURORA, and The Doctrine of Perseverance.

What is your project about? What inspired you to create your game initially? *Rindre: lux is about a boy named Ben, who is an aspiring writer who hits a writer's block and tries to take up lucid dreaming to interact with his stories and characters find out how to advance his story. He ends up meeting interesting people, including his literal dream girl. Yume Nikki is a big inspiration for me. My stories I had written when I was younger also played a huge part, and I decided to recycle bits and pieces of them into lux. Ultimately, the frustrations and experience of being a content creator inspired me to make the game. Hopefully these themes will ring universal to whoever relates to being a creator as well.

How long have you been working on your project? *Rindre: You could say 5 years, or 2 years, or since July 2017! lux actually originated as a Yume Nikki fangame in 2012 (as are all games I've made...). I picked it up again on October 2 2015 as a concept to keep a work log, but actually making it into a tangible product took me until 2017's Pixel Horror Jam. The work log has 30+ pages to it! The Yume Nikki fangame version was prepared to be released, but I forgot, and now I'm too ashamed to release it because I meant to do it 5 years ago :(

Did any other games or media influence aspects of your project? *Rindre: I'm a big fan of psychological and sci-fi/cyberpunk media. These things usually ask: Who are we, and who are we in other people's eyes? What defines us? What does it mean to be an individual in our society? It's a question I like to ask myself and explore in my own projects. My major inspirations who ask these existential questions are deep within Satoshi Kon's works and Philip K Dick's stories, as well as other movies that were inspired by those two or are in the genre (like The Matrix, Inception, Akira, Ghost In The Shell, Serial Experiments Lain, etc.). Some other inspirations and influences that might be surprising are: Kappa Mikey (art style mixing), Vocaloid producers (Crusher-P, Mothy, Yuyoyuppe), Evangelion, Linkin Park, the Hamtaro GBA games, Kirby, and my own dreams. Unsurprisingly, Yume Nikki is the biggest inspiration. I really like the concept of dreams and escapism, and how it often plays into existentialism.

Have you come across any challenges during development? How have you overcome or worked around them?   *Rindre: They say that when making a game, 10% is actual development and 90% is bugfixing/quality assurance. This is VERY TRUE. I spent a couple months working with my bugtesters (Thanks Biel, Choko, Meaka, Pinkuboa, and Uboaappears). The actual demo was a bunch of crunch time for the jam, which was July - August). There were a lot of bugfixes involved, including a bug I was so puzzled with and thought I couldn't fix but the solution was so simple. It took me a month to figure it out! The RM2k3 update caused a bit of trouble for me, but I thank my bugtesters endlessly for helping me squash most, if not all, bugs. On the other hand, in case anybody asks, yes: I have lucid dreamt of my characters in lux when I hit a roadblock. These were never successful. I've only been able to do it twice, both by accident.

Have any aspects of your project changed over time? How does your current project differ from your initial concept? *Rindre: I usually go into development with a clear idea in mind with certain events and endings, but lux differs greatly from its old Yume Nikki counterpart (dream.girl). Notable major changes: Ben now wears glasses. Ben is now a writer. Stella used to not be a bunny. Stella also did not have any stars in her eyes before. The only things retained was the concept of dreaming a dream girl, and Ben's and Stella's names and facial appearance. Even if I make a bunch of plot outlines and flowcharts, things change, but it's natural! The stories that occur within lux also have changed slightly plot-wise from their earlier pre-2012 counterparts (most were written over 10 years ago!), and are begging for a facelift. One involved parkour, but sadly, there is no parkour anymore :(

What was your team like at the beginning? How did people join the team? If you don't have a team, do you wish you had one or do you prefer working alone? *Rindre: I prefer working alone when it's my project! I like working at my own pace, but if needed, I'll reach out to other people for help. I like helping people out on their projects too, but when it comes to my own, I like to handcraft everything by myself. It shows me what I'm capable of doing, and gives my game a "this was 100% made by me" stamp.

What is the best part of developing a game? *Rindre: Making music is relaxing and lets me convey a mood or theme without having to take out my tablet to draw or write something extensively. Being able to relax yet still work on the game is great. I like nights where I can sit down and make something nice I can put in my game. A lot of them are on my SoundCloud (Rindere), but some of the really nice ones are ones I haven't uploaded there. I'm really not a musician, but I did take a class on music technology. My favorite ones going to be in lux on my SoundCloud are "Nepenthean", which is also Ben's theme, "Choke On Your Misery", and "Empyria Incarnadine". It's also really nice to get files from your voice actors and they sound EXACTLY like how you thought your character would sound like! Special thanks to Aidan, Mizu, JR, and Nuei.

Do you find yourself playing other RPG Maker games to see what you can do with the engine, or do you prefer to do your own thing? *Rindre: I prefer to do my own thing! I like to push RPG Maker 2003 to the limit. A lot of the cool effects were done before the major update of RM2k3 that came out earlier last month. Some things I thought were never possible in RM2k3 are things that I made possible after some thought. Like any problem, it can be solved in a bunch of ways, even if you have limitations.

Which character in your game do you relate to the most and why? (Alternatively: Who is your favorite character and why?) *Rindre: The character I relate to the most is actually my least favorite character. It's Ben! I specifically modeled him after myself but changed certain things, like the intensity of his reactions. It was actually difficult to write him, because I had to think about how I would react in the situations I put Ben in. I feel like I had to get into some kind of mindset that was "mine", but also "not mine" as well.

Looking back now, is there anything that regret/wish you had done differently? *Rindre: I feel like I could've released the game sooner, or continued work on FLUX instead. I would like to go back to working on FLUX soon, since I haven't worked on it in a long while. But after hosting the Pixel Horror Jam with Choko and jamming on this game, I'd like to rest up a bit before I take on a big project again.

Once you finish your project, do you plan to explore game's universe and characters further in subsequent projects, or leave it as-is? *Rindre: Because lux is part of the -UX Series, it would naturally be a series with other entries. I don't know if or when they'll all be created, nor if they'll all be games, but I do eventually hope to see it finish. Something I want to explore is to further flesh out the stories Ben has written, especially because they were concepts written before lux ever came up as a concept. I've also given them -UX titles! I think I'll work on Crux/quX next.

What do you look most forward to upon/after release? *Rindre: I am donating proceeds to the One More Light Fund with what is being donated to the itch.io-uploaded version of lux, so I really am looking forward to donating to a cause that is important to me. I encourage people to donate to the OML Fund directly, not through me. I also really like fan reaction, but I love the catharsis of releasing something you've made. It's a mix of relief and pride, but a little bit of anxiety because you don't know how well the fan reaction will be. I hope that my game will affect somebody in a positive, personal way, whether it be a new favorite game, something for them to draw, or become inspiration for their own works. I look forward to free time and rewarding myself with something good, like chicken parmesan too!

Is there something you're afraid of concerning the development or the release of your game?  *Rindre: I constantly ask, "Is my game worthy enough for others to play? Is my game good enough?" But when it comes down to it, really you're asking it to yourself, not to the people that will play your game. Sometimes, you have to sit down and ask yourself, "Am I satisfied with what I have made so far?" Then you go down the list of things you've made and say either, "I'm proud of this!" or "This could use some more work." and you fix it accordingly. The first audience of your game is always you, so if your game is "worthy" and "good enough" to you, then it is for other people.

Question from last month's featured dev (Team Galanx): What kind of stories do you appreciate most in RPG Maker games? For example, do you like ones based off real-life experiences, fantasy elements, or morals? *Rindre: My series of games is called the -UX Series, with there being 4 main stories that are related to each other: "FLUX", "lux", "Ux.", and "X". The rest of the titles end in "-ux" as well. It was only natural to do that!

Do you have any advice for upcoming devs? *Rindre: Game Development -Give things meaningful names. -Back up your work in three different places. -Back up your games frequently. -Never be afraid to remake things, but do this occasionally. If you do this frequently, you'll be caught up in a loop of perfectionism. -Think if the cool new thing you want to put in will actually serve a proper purpose in the game. If it's only there just to be cool, don't put it in your game. -If things don't work out, it's perfectly fine to scrap ideas. -Don't pander. Make a game you want to make, not what others want to play. Releasing your game -Reach out to people who haven't played games similar to yours. You'll have opinions that you wouldn't normally get, compared to others who are familiar with your type of game. -Learn how to take critique. This might be the skill that will take you the longest to hone. -Not everyone is out to get you, but sometimes there will be people who want to bring you down. Even if this happens, there are always people there to support you. -You don't have to agree with every critique given to you. Other advice -If you're not embarrassed about your old work, then you haven't progressed. Continue to improve your skills and yourself. -Don't compare yourself to others. Compare yourself to your past self instead. -Don't be working on your game 24/7. Take up hobbies to occupy yourself, so you don't get burned out. -Learn to be a generalist, but also learn to specialize in something that people will recognize you for. -Be proud of your work.

Board Games, Video Games, or Tabletop Games: Maybe video games because I play them the most but I really enjoy board games too and while I haven’t done tabletop games much yet I definitely intend to. Do You Have Any OC’s? If so, Talk about a Couple of Them: I have SO MANY OC’s, so I’ll just describe the three main characters for the three stories I’m mostly working on right now. First there’s Euphranor Lakatos, who is an impulsive, hot-headed, well-meaning boy who loves singing but he lives on the street and has a curse on him so that anyone who spends too long around them suffers misfortune before getting killed. Liora is a hyperactive die-hard optimist who gains super strength, fire-manipulation, and chaos magic from an enchanted sword with a detached soul in it. And Ksenija is a sarcastic, paranoid, mischievous battle mage who serves in the Royal Guard of her country along with her warrior sister Sabina. One Thing You Wish was Canon in a fiction Story/Fandom: Um… I mean I guess I wish Touya and Yukito would more openly acknowledge the fact that they’re a couple in Cardcaptor Sakura, and there’s almost definitely some Star Trek books out there I’m going to want to be canon once I read them. I can’t think of what else; usually I only actively want to change specific things about canon if they piss me off, in which case it’s more about un-headcanoning it. Favorite Thing to Draw/Write About/Think About: My fandoms and OCs, honestly. I’m kind of obsessed XD. The Strangest Song You Like (And A Link if Possible): Strangest? Do meme songs count? Because I like Star Trekking Across the Universe and You Just Got Loki’d. I feel like I’ve had some “O_o” reactions to various vocaloid songs but I can't remember which ones right now. A Book/Story/Fanfic You Read Recently and Would Recommend (doesn’t have to be fiction): It’s been a little while since I read a full novel, but I would high-key recommend The Book Thief to everyone and of course the Harry Potter books, The Lord of the Rings, Anne of Green Gable, and um I think I just forgot literally everything else I’ve read (which…is lame because I’ve read a lot of good books).
