Just realized The Young Master will have to pick a name at some point and all I can imagine is this fuzzy hulking adolescent space bat insisting it should be Mr. Case because of the upper and lower cases on printing presses.
This is generally fine but Pages feels it's too broad, unless it aims to mean all cases. Like luggage. You know, hoping to stir some more ambition in its child.
This prompts the Most Offended Rant about how it doesnt WANT to be broad, but too many things have the same WORD in English and how english is STUPID and it cant be Mr. Words because that is only vaguely related and it cant be Mr. Type because it wants phonographs too. And sure, if its handling type writers its not going to have the cases in the same way but, see point one: English is stupid.
This results in both bats pouting for a few hours. Young Master bc its frustrated and Pages because its overwhelmed with the realization that its child threw out Mr. Words without even hinting it wanted to take Pages job.
"Fourty years of raising and our young won't even consider deposing me!" It moans, head eclipsing its partners lap as it reclines in their nest. Its expression is distraught, though its partner is not entirely sure why. Another cultural thing, he assumes. A soothing pet between its horns seems to relax it a touch. "It should be planning to outstrip me in wealth and status-- instead it plots to lend..."
Its eyes narrow as if something sour had crawled through its teeth.
"... cooperation."
"Not embellishing tonight, love?" He ignored the withering look shot up at him and took to scratching slowly through Pages' neck fluff in small circles. "I think its sweet, our pup wanting to help."
Pages expression hardened and gripped his wrist, eyes suddenly fierce.
"Sweet does not have a place for us. It is weakness to act this way before its place is established!" It shook his arm a little as its voice managed to rise in pitch. "If it is to survive, to maybe one day see the Wilderness--"
Here it sat up and hunched, back firmly to him. It took a few measured breaths before turning back to its partner, eyes now full of an alien misery that took it whenever it thought too long on the High Wilderness. When it continued, its voice was hard.
"It must never assume kinship will mean friendship, safety." A beat of silence, followed by a wry look stealing over its muzzle. "It is more human than I... anticipated. You thwart me again."
Shaking his head, he took Pages' hand in his own, fingers tracing the boney joints.
"Kids will be what they will-- best we can do is steer. One day you'll get back to your Wilderness and it'll be with you." Pages opened its mouth, but was cut off with a knowing look and a squeeze. "You will see it again, love, even if I can't go with you-- our pup can. I know it's hard, teaching them how to be a curator when their human comes out. But you're doing great, for having to teach someone that's half me."
"You, too, are too soft." The statement lacked the heat of any actual admonishment. It gently ran a claw along his cheek, seemingly lost in thought for a long while. "Perhaps an alliance is not as disastrotrophic as I feared."
"There's my Pages." A warm smile helped ease the Master back into his lap, though the mood was now more solemn than tense. He restarted his slow scratches and earned a hum, Pages' eyes drifting almost closed. "It'll be fine. At worst we tell it to treat everyone like they're Fires after the union pamphlets."
"That.. might not be a terrible course of action."
Meanwhile Young Master is debating if Mr. Ink would be too close to Pages deal or no. Mr. Mechanism, because... mechanisms? No, no, that's not it. Maybe Case is fine, actually. And maybe it could branch out later to detectives because they work cases-- wait, parent has Reliables. Fuck. Names are hard. It gives up and steals a watermelon from Apples.

It hurts, to look at them.
Sasuke canât help himself. Naruto is his best friend, after all, and heâs not yet so desperate that heâll avoid him. Itâs worse, somehow, that he canât even dislike her.
Sheâs good for him, he thinks, when heâs feeling particularly self-deprecating. Her hair is dark and her skin pale as porcelain, and thatâs where the similarities end between him and Hinata.
Sweet, and so patient with Naruto. Soft-spoken, but not a pushover. Impeccably dressed, always, no make-up needed to outshine any girl beside her. A picture perfect couple, thatâs what they are. It wouldnât be so bad if he didnât have to watch it unfold from the front row.
How her shyness turned to surety, how her eyes would catch on Naruto and look away before, but now â now she looks at him like he belongs to her, soft smile on her plump lips.
Sasuke canât even hate her, and he wishes he could.
Itâs not her fault that Sasuke is the way he is. She doesnât know, isnât doing it on purpose. And yet, thereâs a stab to Sasukeâs chest every time she takes his hand, every time Naruto tucks her silky hair behind her perfect ear.
Naruto will kiss her cheek and Sasuke will be looking, always looking. His face devoid of emotion, his voice carefully neutral. He canât be mean to Narutoâs girlfriend, though he wishes he could. Maybe if Naruto got mad at him and pushed him away, Sasuke would be free to move on.
Itâs more likely that Sasuke would apologize and do better, and heâd rather spare himself the embarrassment.
Sometimes he imagines that Hinata will find out, that sheâll start treating him with suspicion, watch his every move with her wide eyes. Feel threatened by him. But Sasuke is no threat. Heâs tired and hurting, but heâs not a homewrecker. It would be a lot easier if Naruto didnât keep nudging him in Sakuraâs direction.
Itâs not Sakuraâs fault, either. Sheâs dreaming of something she canât have, and the similarities make him sick to his stomach.
Sometimes he thinks heâll date her, live the lie to the fullest. Give her what she wants, since heâs doomed anyway. He doubts heâd last long, though. If he had even the slightest bit of interest in women â but when he looks at her, thereâs just no attraction. Heâs not sure how no oneâs noticed yet. Itâs not like heâs that good of an actor. He thinks the only reason no oneâs figured it out is because heâs so deep in the closet, and theyâre all so heterosexual. Why would they suspect heâs gay? It suits them better if he isnât.
âOh, I didnât realize it was that late already,â Sakura says beside him, breaking him out of his thoughts.
The bar is lively around them, but the music is at a bearable noise level. Sheâs looking at her phone, frowning. On the other side of the small table, Naruto pouts.
âItâs not late!â he objects, the beer in his glass sloshing around as he waves his hands around. âWe just got here!â
âWeâve been here for three hours, I think,â Hinata says, leaning her cheek on his shoulder.
Sasuke wonders how she manages, the way he moves around so much. Perhaps her body is as soft as her voice, easily following him.
âI told you I have to get up early tomorrow.â Sakura sighs, irritated. She fishes her bag up from the floor, putting her phone inside it. âI really have to get going.â
âIâll walk you to the station,â Sasuke offers. Not because he particularly wants to, but heâs not in the mood to subject himself to third-wheeling Naruto and Hinata. âI should get going, anyway.â
âWhat?â Naruto looks disappointed, more disappointed than when Sakura announced her departure. âI thought you were free tomorrow.â
Rolling his eyes, Sasuke swallows down the last of his drink.
âDoesnât mean I want to stay up all night,â he counters with, easing out of the booth. âI still have to study.â
âYou study too much,â Naruto mutters, giving Hinata a smile like an afterthought when she squeezes his arm.
âMaybe if you studied at all you wouldnât need to panic before every exam,â Sakura nags at him, coming around the table to wait next to Sasuke. âSome of us care about our grades.â
âNerds.â At least Naruto looks a little happier, and Sasuke hates to think that itâs because he thinks anythingâs going to happen between him and Sakura. âDonât get lost, you two!â
They say their goodbyes, and Sasuke tries to pretend he doesnât notice how Sakuraâs cheeks fill with color when they step outside the bar. Sheâs put a jacket on, but Sasukeâs fine in his sweater. Itâs not cold enough that her blush can be blamed on the weather.
âThanks for walking me,â she says, hefting her bag higher up her shoulder. Sheâd joined them straight from the library, researching her latest paper. âYou didnât have to.â
âItâs fine,â he tells her, hands tucked into his sleeves.
He doesnât want to run the risk of her attempting to reach for his hand. As much as he dislikes her attention, itâs safer if she thinks heâs just playing hard to get. He wonât have to explain, then, why he hasnât outright told her to give up. He should, he knows. But Naruto would just nudge him towards some other girl, would bother him about it until Sasuke started going on actual dates. Itâs touching, how worried he is over Sasuke potentially being lonely.
Too bad Naruto himself is the cause of it.
âYouâre not doing anything tomorrow, then?â Sakura asks, stepping aside as they meet a group of half-drunk businessmen. âIâm working until fiveâŠâ
It would be so easy to invite her out. To suggest a movie, or trying out that new café near campus. To watch her eyes light up with hope, watch her mouth stretch into an excited smile.
âI really do need to study,â he says. âAnd Iâm almost out of clean clothes.â
None of it is a lie, technically. Heâs just not sure heâll actually do either of those things tomorrow.
âOh.â
She tries to hide her disappointment, and Sasuke is an expert by now at pretending he doesnât notice. They walk the rest of the way in silence, waving a quick goodbye at the ticket gates as Sakuraâs train is due to arrive in just two minutes. Sasuke buys a drink from a vending machine and takes small sips as he waits for his own, mindlessly scrolling through social media. He almost ignores the text Naruto sends.
> Wanna hang out tomorrow?
He contemplates it. On the one hand, yes, of course he wants to. On the other, having an entire day to himself has its appeal.
> Iâll be busy
> Ooh, with sakura?
The train arrives, and Sasuke snags a seat next to a couple too caught up with each other to pay attention to him.
> No
> Got studying and laundry to do
The reply is instant.
> Thatâs too boring!!! Iâm coming over for lunch
> Whatever
He pockets his phone, and stares down at the bottle in his hands for the rest of the trip. It doesnât help against the warmth rising in his chest. At least he doesnât do this to Sakura â doesnât invite himself into her space, ignorant of her feelings. It doesnât make him feel better.
xxx
Sasuke doesnât have a lot of friends. Heâs got Naruto, and then thereâs his small group of friends from high school. Naruto is the only one who still lives nearby. Rather, Sasuke had ended up staying in Konoha like him. Itâs a big enough city that most of his classmates are strangers, although slightly less so in their second year. He stayed with his parents for his first year, but when one of his cousins moved abroad for work he took the opportunity to stay at her apartment instead. Itâs closer to his university, and if he, potentially, wanted to bring a guy home then no one would know.
He doesnât think his parents would mind, but there wouldnât be any privacy. He relishes in it, and Naruto does, too.
âI should just move in with you,â Naruto groans, spread out on his couch. âYou wouldnât believe how annoying my mom was this morning.â
âI think I can believe it,â Sasuke tells him, cleaning up after their lunch. âAnd just to be clear, Iâve never said youâd be welcome to live here.â
âStingy,â Naruto grumbles. âHow long is your cousin gone, anyway?â
Shrugging, Sasuke dries off the counter just for something to do with his hands.
âA year at least. Weâll see. So itâs not like Iâll be living here forever.â
âBut still!â
âWhere would you even sleep?â
Naruto happily pats the couch. When Sasuke scowls at him, he simply grins.
âCome on,â Naruto says. âI want to watch a movie.â
âI wasnât lying when I said I need to study.â
Still, he gives in too easily. Naruto lifts his legs to give him room, dumping them all over Sasukeâs lap once he sits down. Itâs things like this that makes Sasukeâs heart refuse to give up. He leans his elbow on the back of the couch, cheekbone pressed to his closed fist. He doesnât say anything when Naruto picks a drama at random, letting him comment on the plot as much as he wants. Watching movies with Naruto is certainly never quiet, and he winces as Naruto kicks his legs as he shouts his anger at the main character.
When the movie ends, Naruto doesnât start a new one. Instead he chews on his bottom lip, playing with the remote. Sasuke considers getting up to use the toilet, maybe suggesting going to the corner store for snacks, but then Naruto clears his throat suspiciously.
âWhat?â he asks, irritated when Naruto takes his time.
âSo, how are things going with Sakura?â
He resists the urge to pinch his nose. He still lets out a heavy breath, not quite a sigh but close enough that Naruto frowns.
âI mean,â Naruto continues, âyou could just ask her out. Sheâs definitely going to say yes.â
Sasuke shifts, uncomfortable. Narutoâs legs are still on top of his. His socks have little frogs on them.
âIâve told you Iâm not really into the idea of a relationship right now.â
âUh-huh.â Naruto rolls his eyes, pushing himself up and finally removing his legs, crossing them at the ankles instead. âSounds like excuses to me.â
âJust drop it, Naruto.â
âBut if you get together things will be so much easier,â Naruto insists, poking at his arm. âWe can go on double dates, and stuff.â
Sending him a glare, Sasuke pulls a leg up to his chest. It wonât prevent Naruto if he decides to get comfy on his lap again, but it might make him think twice at least. Narutoâs only wearing shorts, and all that naked skin isnât good for his heart. Itâs definitely too cold for it, but Narutoâs never been one to care about the weather.
âWe already go places together.â
âYeah, but itâs not the same!â
Sasuke pinches his lips, looking away. If heâs not careful, those large blue eyes will convince him to cave in, and then heâll find himself with a girlfriend. He does a lot for Naruto, but there are limits.
âIâm not going to ask her out,â he mutters, knowing it will only lead to more questioning.
Sure enough, Naruto makes a noise of protest.
âBut you havenât rejected her either!â
âShe hasnât asked me out either.â
âItâs obvious she likes you.â
âThatâs her problem.â
Naruto kicks at his thigh, using his heel. He looks properly annoyed now, as if Sasuke is a petulant child, refusing to do whatâs best for him.
âIf you got over yourself for a minute, youâd realize what a catch she is!â
He doesnât reply. Let Naruto think heâs just stubborn, or an asshole, or whatever. Let him think Sasukeâs just stringing her along, keeping her attention while refusing to commit. Itâs better than the alternative.
âLeave it, Naruto,â he warns, getting up and moving to the kitchen. âWeâre not talking about this.â
At least Naruto doesnât follow him, though it doesnât make much of a difference. The apartment is small, no wall separating the kitchen from the living room. He searches through his cabinets, locating a forgotten bag of wasabi peas. He throws them at Narutoâs head.
âEat these and shut up,â he says.
To his relief, Naruto does as told.
xxx
He picks up the call from Karin half-distracted, mind still stuck on a question for tomorrowâs seminar. As usual, she doesnât wait for him to say hi, making her wince with the volume of her voice.
âDo you have any idea how tiring it is to listen to Naruto whine about you?â she starts with, the background noise suggesting sheâs outdoors. âCanât you just tell him youâre gay and put me out of my misery.â
âNo thanks.â He drops his pen on his desk, rubbing at his eyes. He regrets not going to the university library, at least then he wouldnât have been able to pick up the call. âWas that all? Iâm kind of busy.â
âYou know, this is exactly why I moved away,â she continues, ignoring him. âI thought I could get away from all the high school-level drama. Just get yourself a boyfriend, and go on those stupid double dates my cousin is so desperately yearning for. How hard can it be?!â
He can feel a headache incoming, and he rubs his fingertips between his brows. Naruto had sulked for hours the day before, until Sasuke got sick of it and threw him out. It was definitely backhanded of him to call Karin and complain.
âIf you really wanted to be left out of it, why are you calling me? Thatâs the opposite of not getting involved.â
âBecause itâs really painful and Iâm morally obligated as the only person with functional brain cells to tell you to move on. Juugoâs too nice to say it and Suigetsu would give you terrible advice and sit back and watch. Iâm being nicer to you than you deserve.â
âBy telling me to move on,â Sasuke deadpans, wondering why his parents couldnât have settled down somewhere else.
âWell, someone has to do it! Clearly Iâm the gay cousin in the family, so youâre screwed. Might as well get over it and get laid.â
âI really hate you sometimes, you know that?â
She huffs at him, traffic and broken conversations filtering through the phone. Thereâs the jingle of a shopâs door, and the noise cuts off.
âYour pining is just getting sad,â she eventually replies, distractedly. âTrust me, I know my cousin. Heâs not worth it.â
Something unpleasant churns in Sasukeâs stomach. He wants to argue with her that he is worth it, but he doesnât want to land himself in an hour-long lecture if he can help it. He rolls his neck, making a face. Sheâs got a point, but he doesnât enjoy hearing it. His life would be a lot simpler if he could find someone who made him forget about Naruto. Heâs just not sure itâs fair to expect someone to instantly replace a lifetime of friendship.
âI donât think I should have to come out just because Naruto irritates you,â is what he says instead, leaning back in his chair. âWhat if my parents find out and disown me? You want to be responsible for that?â
âSasuke,â she sighs, âyour brother is literally gay and your parents love his boyfriend.â
âSo?â
âStop. Making. Excuses.â
He bites his cheek, holding back a denial. Heâs not worried about his parents, heâs worried about Narutoâs reaction. That things will change between them. That heâll think Sasuke has feelings for him, which would be correct but would also ruin absolutely everything.
âIâll⊠consider it,â he concedes, after a long silence, during which Karin has finished buying whatever it was she needed.
âReally? Because Iâm going to hold you to that.â
He sighs.
âNext time Iâm not picking up when you call me.â
xxx
A few weeks pass, and not much changes. Naruto still takes up too much space in his head and life, Sakura continues to drop hints but refuses to make the first move, and Hinata is still as lovely as ever. She doesnât seem to have much of a personality other than being Narutoâs girlfriend, but to be fair Sasuke hasnât precisely paid attention or tried to get to know her. Narutoâs birthday is drawing closer, and he canât bring himself to do anything to break the status quo before then.
Heâs been considering it, though. It would be a relief to stop pretending. He canât imagine himself finding a boyfriend, though, because where would he even meet someone? Itâs too awkward to use a dating app, and heâs not precisely social. He doesnât have any experience, either, if you donât count those childish games they played sometimes when they were younger. And that one time Naruto kissed him by accident when they were twelve.
Because of this, heâs really not expecting it when one day in class, just as the lecture ends, his eyes fall on the messenger bag that the guy next to him has just finished packing. Thereâs a rainbow pin on it, and Sasuke blurts out his question before he can stop to think about it.
âAre you gay?â
He only lifts his eyes from the pin when the surprised silence stretches out a bit too long. Their eyes meet, and the other boy is staring at him like heâs not sure how to react.
âUh,â he says eventually, fingers clenching around the bagâs strap. âI mean, yes? But if youâre thinking about the pin itâs just a regular rainbowâŠâ
He trails off, and Sasuke feels his cheeks heat up a bit. He canât believe he just asked, when he himself has gone to such lengths to make sure no one made such assumptions about him.
âSorry,â he apologizes. âI shouldnât have asked.â
âItâs fine.â
Maybe he should know the guyâs name, but he doesnât. Heâs pretty short, hair dyed a light brown and glasses perched on his nose. Cute, but Sasukeâs not sure heâs his type. Heâs not sure he has a type, other than Naruto.
âAre you gay?â the guy asks him, eyebrows rising above the frame of his glasses.
Sasuke licks his lips. He could say no, but to what end?
âI am,â he forces out, breathing in a deep breath.
âOh.â Thereâs red color blooming on the other boyâs face, his eyes flickering to the side for a moment. âI was kind of hoping, but, um⊠I mean, hoping sounds weird! Sorry, I just wasnât expecting you to ask outright.â
When Sasuke stands up, he realizes heâs almost a head taller than him.
âIâm Sasuke,â he offers, clicking his laptop shut and slowly sliding it into his bag.
âI know. I mean! Iâm Hiroshi. Nice to meet you.â
Sasuke nods, and awkwardly turns to leave. Hiroshi stops him with a hand to his arm, though, and Sasuke swallows nervously as the turns back. Heâs not interested in Hiroshi, not really, but heâs never been asked out by a boy before and the novelty of the situation is getting to him.
âDo you, um, are you busy right now? We could have lunch?â
He weighs the pros and cons in his mind. As nervous as Hiroshi looks, thereâs a determined glint in his eyes that sways Sasuke over.
âOkay,â he says, and just like that heâs doing what Karin told him to do.
Heâs trying, at least.
xxx
Over the course of a week, including having coffee together and a visit to the aquarium, Sasuke learns a lot about Hiroshi. Or Hiro, as he likes his friends to call him. They donât have too much in common, but theyâre both gay and studying agricultural economics. Once Hiro gets over his initial shyness, Sasuke finds heâs got a great sense of humor and wonât hesitate to poke fun at him.
Itâs a breath of relief, to spend time with someone who doesnât know him from before. He didnât realize how much he needed it â just being able to be himself, without constantly keeping himself in check.
He canât fool himself to think itâs enough to replace Naruto, but maybe he doesnât need to replace him. Maybe itâs enough that Hiro seems to like him. He doesnât really think about it, when he invites Hiro over on a Saturday night, after theyâd had dinner at a nice udon place.
âOh, wow,â Hiro says as he steps into Sasukeâs apartment, making an impressed face. âNice place.â
âItâs my cousinâs, so no need to sound so impressed.â
Hiro rolls his eyes, taking off his shoes and jacket and following Sasuke inside.
âAlright, Iâll try to keep it in,â he teases, sitting on the couch when Sasuke motions him towards it. âBut it must be nice, to have your own place like this. The dorms are fine, but I canât exactly bring guys there.â
Humming his agreement, Sasuke grabs two cans of soda from the fridge, handing one of them to Hiro when he sinks down on the couch next to him.
âWant to watch something?â
Hiro nods, and Sasuke brings the TV to life. Heâs not expecting anything to happen â theyâve only known each other a week. Heâs still coming to terms with having a friend other than Karin he can talk to like this, and she doesnât really count since there was never the potential for anything to happen between them. Hiro is⊠potentially someone Sasuke could date. At least thereâs nothing wrong with him, not yet, and Sasukeâs easing himself into the idea of getting to know him better.
He finds a movie at random, some sci-fi that doesnât look terrible. The movie turns into background noise as they talk, Hiroâs eyes watching his face more than the screen. Itâs nice, in a new, exhilarating way, to have a guyâs attention on him like this. Heâs not sure what to do with it. When Hiro moves closer, knee touching Sasukeâs thigh, hand resting on the back of the couch and occasionally touching his neck, Sasuke canât find it in him to move away.
It feels like a secret, shared between the two of them. He thinks of Naruto for a long moment, allows himself the pain lacing through his chest as he imagines light brown hair replaced with blond, dark eyes replaced with blue. Then, he pushes it away, tells himself he can have this. The emotions are only his own.
Itâs all happening too fast when Hiro grows bold, leaning in to press their mouths together, but he doesnât care. Itâs no oneâs business if he spends the evening on his couch with a boy in his lap, a boy who isnât his best friend.
The pain is easier to swallow if he tells himself that heâs the only one hurt.

wayward pines  // sirius black
Summary: Sirius Black and Ravenclaw!reader have loved each other for years, obvious to everyone apart from them
Request: Hii, if you aren't too swamped, could you please write a sirius black x ravenclaw reader fic based on the song 'you're in love' by Taylor Swift where the reader and sirius have been friends since their first years and have been pining for each other? And could it have some angst with a fluff ending please? Thank you!
A/N: k so I said that Lily and Sirius arenât really friends but thatâs partly for the plot and partly bc timeline but I promise u Lily and Sirius were the best of friends also I enjoyed thisÂ
Reader: unspecified
Warnings: swearing
Sirius Black knew every single person that walked the halls of Hogwarts, it was a talent of his. That said, he didnât have many friends. He had James, of course, and Remus and Peter and on a good day, he would probably call Lily and Marlene his friends, too. He also had you. And whilst he was all clashing teeth and stubble and sharp words and leather jackets and pride, you made him soft; you made him feel more. With you, he was everything he ever wanted to be and, Merlin, did he love you for it. Heâd loved you since the day you met, he always thought.
You were both so young back then and it was all so long ago, but he remembered every detail. He was scared shitless, with his relationship with his family already so strained; just a scared kid sitting on his own on a magical train to a magical castle. And then you appeared, excited and curious. And you made it better. He remembered your face when you were sorted; heâd been sure blue suited you. Heâd been right. When he was sorted, he had no idea how to feel. He sat next to James that first day, which he was grateful for now, obviously, but at the time it didnât matter because he didnât know James. He tried to be happy that he wasnât like his family but he knew there would be hell to pay eventually. He caught your eye, though, as you shot him a thumbs up across the hall and, to him, that mattered. It meant everything to him, actually, because he knew you. He felt like heâd always known you.
âOi, Pads, mate,â James shouted as Sirius stared out the window, watching the snow fall and some Hufflepuff students already rushing out to brave the cold. Sirius blinked, trying to brush the thought of you from his mind. It didnât work; it never worked.
âYou coming outside? Or are you just gonna sit there pining over Y/N?â
With his mood immediately soured over being caught, Sirius picked up his scarf and threw it at James, pointing toward him with an accusatory finger.
âAre you really one to talk about pining?â
Jamesâ face dropped as Remusâ laughter filled their dorm.
âHas a point, Prongs.â
âShut up, Mooney.â
There was a great deal of competition to get outside; everyone was milling through the corridors to enjoy the weekendâs weather. The snow was ridiculously bright when they finally got downstairs, though not nearly as bright as Jamesâ sinister grin.
âOh fuck,â With horror in his eyes, Sirius watched a large clump of snow fly towards him. With snow now down his neck, in his eyes, mouth and hair, his face was so bitingly cold he almost couldnât hear James snorting. Almost.
âYouâre dead, Potter.â
âOoh,â James taunted although he was definitely running away. âPotter.â
His teasing didnât last long as a very, very compact snowball hit James directly between his eyes, covering his glasses in ice. Sirius looked over to Remus who only turned around, looking behind him for whoever had thrown it. He shrugged in mock confusion, sending Sirius into bouts of laughter. That was before Peter pummelled him with a block of snow to the side of his head. Like children, they played for hours outside, as did the rest of Hogwarts, it seemed.
It wasnât until something cold and hard hit him in the back of the head that Sirius decided he was done with their snowball fight, because when he turned around expecting to see his friends, there you stood with the smuggest grin heâd ever seen. For a moment, he just stared at you, his heart clenching at the way the snow fell into your hair, your bright smile and your fluffy gloves messing with the buttons on your coat.
âDo you think thatâs funny?â he asked, running towards you. You struggled to suppress your smile, trying to replace it with a deep frown.
âNo, Mr Black, I think this is a very serious matter.â
He rolled his eyes as you giggled, looking up at Hogwarts. He moved so you were stood shoulder to shoulder, both of your staring up at the castle in the snow.
âBeautiful weather weâre having.â You said softly, thinking about how truly beautiful it was.
Looking at Sirius didnât help. With snowflakes melting in his hair and his cheeks rosy, he looked more handsome than ever.
âIt wasnât forecast.â He added, enjoying your mock small talk. He always enjoyed playing pretend with you. He looked down, noticing that you were watching him. He smiled.
âCare to dance?â he asked, turning to face you with one hand raised expectantly. Sometimes, you thought Sirius knew exactly how much you liked him and that he used it to mess with you somehow. Though truly you knew his pretend-flirting and light touches could never hurt you as much as you hurt yourself by accepting his heart-wrenching offers.
âOf course.â
If Hogwarts had a gift shop, and if that gift shop sold snow globes, Sirius was sure the image of you two dancing there, despite how clumsy and awkward it was in the snow, would be the only thing worth trapping inside of them. Heâd buy them all, he thought, every single one. He didnât have to though, so it was lucky Hogwarts had neither a gift shop nor snow globes; heâd remember that moment for the rest of his life. Bathed in comfortable silence with matching grins on your faces, the two of you side-stepped from left to right, leaving footprints into the snow. Through gloves, you held hands and through your coat, he held you and in some unexplainable way, it was perfect. It had been perfect. At that moment, he decided that you were the only one he wanted to share his world with. At that moment, you decided that you couldnât keep throwing your heart at a boy that could never love you the way you wanted him to so desperately.
âSirius, I-â you said, unsure of the right words. âI donât-â
You were glad when that snowball hit him, truly, because he knew you more than you knew yourself and had he not been distracted by the clump of ice lobbed his way, he wouldâve known there was something wrong. You watched his face turn from peaceful to annoyed amusement and for that second, you cherished it like it was the last time youâd see it. May it would be.
âSorry, love. I need to teach a git a lesson in manners.â
Shooting you a signature grin, he raced over to his friends, picking up snow from every surface he could on the way. You watched him with fondness as played childlike games, heart already aching at what you knew you had to do.
After that day, you didnât talk to Sirius for two weeks and three days. Though it doesnât sound a lot, it felt like years for the both of you. It wasnât easy to avoid him, especially when heâd made it his mission to find out why you, of all people, had started ignoring him. Despite your best efforts, you were also in more pain now, without him, than youâd ever been around him. You kept telling yourself it would get better and that youâd done the right thing but now you werenât so sure. You missed his voice and his laughter and his presence and how even in silence you felt like no one would ever know you better than he did. Maybe thatâs why you didnât run when he found you at the lake. You just sat there; your knees hiked up to your chest as you looked at the frozen-over water. Youâd seen him coming but made no move to escape and he, in his upset state, had taken that as a win.
Sirius Black had been through many things in his life, many awful things. Heâd also done quite a good deal of awful things himself. Nothing compared to those weeks without you. He felt like heâd lost everything good in his life and everyone had noticed how entirely absent he was. While James had been vaguely irritated at his constant pining over you, perhaps unfairly, heâd take that any day over Siriusâ vacant stare and empty laughter. Though Sirius wouldnât talk about it, he knew it was about you, that much was obvious. It was always about you: anyone whoâd known Sirius for more than five minutes knew he was in love. After spending all week looking for you, desperately chasing you after class, lurking outside of your common room and even hunting in the library, when he finally saw you by the lake, he almost thought he was dreaming.
You expected him to be angry but when you looked at each other, your stomach sank at the tears in his eyes. You realised how unfair you were being; it wasnât Siriusâ fault he didnât love you like you loved him.
âYouâre my best friend,â he said, swallowing. âYou know that?â
You didnât know what to say. You didnât know how to say that that wasnât enough. You felt like a monster. Fortunate for you, he didnât give you a chance to reply anyway.
âAnd I want to spend every day of my life with you. I want to make you breakfast and burn your toast and I want you to wear my shirts and I want us to talk for hours like we always doâŠâ
Your mouth dropped open. Did he mean that?
âI spent this past fortnight falling apart because I canât do that. I canât do my life without you in it, Y/N, because itâs not my life at all. It means nothing.â
âSirius-â
âNo, itâs okay that you donât feel the same. Y/N, Iâve loved you for years and I could never put into words the way you make me feel. Iâm sorry that Iâve ruined us, Iâm so-â
âSirius.â
âI just need you. Itâs okay that you donât feel the same but please just be my best friend again.â
Tears were rolling down his cheeks and when he turned to you, your voice caught in your throat. You stared at his bloodshot eyes, noticing how sad the grey seemed. You couldnât find the words you wanted to say so you said the only thing that came to mind as you looked at his beautiful face.
âI keep a picture of you on my desk at home.â
His eyebrows shot up and then drew down again, sharply, confused.
âItâs because when Iâm not here, youâre the only thing I ever miss. The only bit that matters, I suppose.â
You saw the hope brewing in his eyes and you couldnât help but smile slightly.
âIt doesnât matter where I am.â You looked back for a second at the lake, eyes skimming over the frozen surface. âAs long as youâre there.â
He nodded, licking salty tears from his lips as a smile tugged at them. He pulled your arm towards him.
âYou really mean that?â
You stared at each other for a moment as you scooted closer, identical bashful smiles lifting your cheeks. Like the world was right again, the silence between you felt normal.
âI love you, Sirius.â
The way his eyes softened at your words sent a warmth through your chest at the sight of him.
âI just didnât think you could ever feel the same Iâm sorry.â
Without saying anything, he leant forward and rested his forehead against yours. His hand dragged down your arm to rest on top of hand, grass tickling his palm through your fingers. Slowly, he interlocked your fingers together and smirked.
âI thought you were supposed to be the smart one, love.â
You scoffed. Maybe he was right. It was hard to deny that youâd both been blind, though.

An analysis on Guy, Eep and Grug NOBODY asked for in Croods - A New Age but tough shit
help
So its theory time :U Since this trailer seems to finally go into Guyâs perspective over things happening in the story. It seems like though Guy has been accepted into the Croods family, its not peaches and cream as one would think. Guy is used to having personal space, basically being able to have peace and quiet. Now after a lifetime of solitude [srsly, how long has he been alone??], this is a big adjustment for him. I donât doubt he doesnât care and love the Croods like family because they are his family now, he gave up a lot for them and Eep. Thereâs something of a culture difference between the family and him, with the Croods being used to being jam packed together and Guy who is more used to personal space.
Look how excited he gets over having his own space once they get to the Betterman Farm!
This also translates into his relationship with Eep. If you notice in a lot of the teasers so far, theyâre never alone together. Grug is usually looming in the background or the family is there, theyâre even using Chunky of all things to try getting away from them.
[also judging by the weave work here on the wood sheâs probably in one of the spare rooms at the farm and the fact the clip launched with âWorldâs First Crushâ, it might be safe to say even Eep starts to enjoy having privacy since this means you know, more Guy time but Iâll get more into Eep and what I think their âconflictâ will be later!]Â
but ofc Grug is still there getting in their way, and if youâre a teenage boy in love with a girl, it bites hard that you canât just enjoy one on one time alone with her. They keep getting interrupted whether it be by animals, the family, Grug or nature itself; that would cause tension for anyoneâs relationship. Guy even needs to explain to Eep what privacy is and knowing how she lived, ofc this is a real weird and exciting concept for someone so used to having other people breathing down her neck. Â
This translates into his relationship with Grug because I personally feel this has nothing to do with Eep herself and Guy doesnât hold that against her. Grug is mentioned in interviews that heâs ânot ready to accept Eep is all grown up and has her relationship with Guyâ and that âsheâs ready to leave the packâ, as Grug calls it.Â
They survived the end of the world, but dynamics change, and I love continuing with where do Eep (Emma Stoneâs character) and Guy (Ryan Reynolds) leave off (with their romantic relationship) and how does Grug (Nicolas Cage) accept the change that his daughter is now grown up? So we definitely further those themes of a father not wanting his daughter to leave âthe packâ â as they call it â but sheâs ready, and her relationship with Guy starts off where it ended in the first film.
Guy even causes what seems will be quite a fight when he tells Grug to chill out after Grug mentions âthe pack is stronger togetherâ.Â
Grug probably wouldnât be having this kind of fear if there was nothing to fear. It might be safe to say Guy and Eep are planning to leave the nest to be on their own. Theyâre both young adults and in love, its a natural step in a relationship to want to fly the coop. This snippet here really gives me those âengagement/promise ringâ vibes with how Guy is holding the rock drawing and Eep is reacting.Â
Just what did he say before this? Theyâre also huddling away and discussing privacy, perhaps it was the lead up into âHey Eep, letâs move outâ, or whatever the caveman version of it is.
and Grug is watching them very worriedly.Â
There is something up going on with them now, and though Grug has accepted Guy and Eep, this isnât a step heâs ready for as a father [and honestly probably after surviving The End/repaired his relationship with Eep, didnât think would be coming this soon]
This segment in the interview really heavily implies these sort of things too:
The world is always changing, and families also change. As a father, Grugâs maybe not ready for the next step of his daughter leaving home. And with Eep and Guy I thought, âThis is a great opportunity to now hand it off to them.â In the first movie itâs like puppy love between Eep and Guy. They meet each other, and theyâre in love. But theyâre the only two teenagers in the world, so of course they love each other. This story answers the question of why they actually belong to each other. Through the course of this story, we challenge what their relationship means, and why they should spend their future together.
You donât talk about challenging what a relationship means and what their future will be without planning something surrounding that. They are planning and its freaking Grug out.
I also think in Grugâs own way he doesnât want to see Guy go either, since it must say a lot about how different the dynamic of Guy and Grugâs relationship as a son and father figue have shifted if Guy feels he can tell Grug to calm down and also flirt/court Eep with protective daddy vision on him all hours of the day. When the Bettermanâs show up, I am convinced Grug is going to get defensive over Guy bc heâs now as good as his son.
Thereâs also these little moments which seem pretty small but:
[as sour as Guy looks here, it probably means a lot for Grug to actually let Guy be in their sleep pile]
[also look how pure and excited Guy is to share about the shower with Eep and Grug]
I feel Grug does care for Guy but being how Grug is has unintentionally made Guy feel like an outsider in the Croods clan.
Now, back to the Bettermans and Guy. The lifestyle they live is clean, modernized and has routine, things Guy is probably craving with an inventive mind such as his. Heâs just in heaven rn. These people are more like him than the Croods are, and I donât mean that in a bad way. The Croods are still important to him but it probably feels invigorating to meet likeminded people.
You can already tell in the trailers Guy is going to form a bond with them. Part of me doubts theyâre actually related to Guy like as parents and a sister but I wonât rule out the possibility, considering how invested Phil seems to be with Guy in a lot of the teasers and trailers. Perhaps theyâre extended family or old family friends who knew Guyâs, we wonât know yet.
This bond I feel will be the prime focus of the film and conflict as well. [and no, not in the love triangle way concerning Dawn, thereâs already an interview disproving that!]
âIt seems from the trailer that Kelly Marie Tranâs Dawn and Emma Stoneâs Eep hit it off immediatelyâŠâ Thereâs definitely a lane that is driven a lot in romantic comedy type things where the new girl is the cause of jealousy. With Eep and Guy, when this other girl comes into the picture it would have been easy to go, âOh, she could be the romantic rival.â We made the purposeful decision to not go down that lane.
However I do think his friendship with Dawn will be something as a compare/contrast with how Eep treats her. Both are doing what they feel is better and right for the sheltered girl, with Eep wanting to take Dawn outside the wall and Guy getting upset when he finds out Eep took her out.
Heâs obviously going to catch them and lecture Eep about this. Now, how does Eep feel about Guyâs shift?
At first, I really think she supports him on connecting with the Bettermans and all the stuff he wants to do. Guy is quirky, heâs inventive, and likes to push the mold in what he can change to make life easier on himself and the people he loves. This place is his Utopia and considering the exchange she has with Grug over âa little change isnât the end of the worldâ, she probably is willing to give the farm a chance because she knows Guy has been feeling lost and probably the butt of the joke lately [least where Grug is involved]
We also know Eep loves to try new things, she just in general loves new. Its what attracted her to Guy and even after it all, still loves Guy.Â
However, this is what I believe is going to be the start of the conflict between Eep and Guy too. Guy starts to change too much and Guy being Guy probably doesnât realize it. She starts seeing the farm as another cave, another place to hide and seeing Guy thriving here probably makes her feel worried about what this means for them as a couple. That wall like Eep said is Dawnâs cave, and Guy probably doesnât think of it that way after a lifetime of danger and being on the run from The End. Also the private bedroom probably helps
Anyway, what was I saying?
also something I noticed was when they first arraive in the elevator you got Guy looking at Eep to see her reaction to this place. Heâs obviously hoping sheâs finding the Bettermans has amazing as he is.
and just look how happy he looks seeing Eep isnât going to freak out at Dawn I guess??? lolÂ
Just âthese two worlds are melding nicelyâ
However something I think is going to happen as the premises of the movie is both families settling their diffĂ©rences aside/celebrating them, is that somewhere along the line as Eep and Guy get closer to Dawn, thereâs going to be a shift. The Bettermans perhaps act uppity with the Croods since they are cavemen and deemed less intelligent, so you got Guy stuck in the middle with his two found families trying to co-exist [also Eep too, bc her friendship with Dawn is obviously a major plot thread of the film]
Eep takes Dawn out for a joyride and the two bring in danger that followed them there.
âWhatâs on the other side of the wall?â
also totally predicting some kind of reveal that makes Guy have a temporary fall out with Phil, I donât know why but its just a vibe Iâm getting. Phil looks scared and Guy looks pretty pissed off while asking about the wall. That or he says something about the Croods themselves he feels is too far, I mean, Guy looks rather uncomfortable here as Phil says âWeâre an evolved peopleâ pretty smugly.Â
âPhil those are my future in-laws, stopâ
Heâs also seated on their side of the table, keep note of that with the Croods on the other. Thereâs going to be a sense torn between both worlds going on for Guy in this film, at least I think so. And its going to challenge him and how he cares for Eep and the Croods.Â
Leading into Eep and the Croods.
The big bad shows up, wrecks some shit and abducts everyone, at least it seems like it here.
âThe only way to survive is if the pack stays togetherâ, this whole adventure reminds Guy of his place in the Croods family and gives Eep and Grug a better understanding of what Guy is feeling/going through.
People loved The Croods, and theyâd been trying to make another one⊠but itâs a high bar. I can say this because I didnât work on [the first film], itâs a beautiful movie. Itâs funny, and itâs about family. I was like, âI want to see the continuation of where we left off with these characters.â Especially with the father/daughter aspect of the first one, and going, âNow that Grug has accepted Guy into his pack, and has this great relationship with his daughter, where do they go from there?â
Something tells me Guy and Eep have their big blow up somewhere around Rafikzilla shows up, and after getting separated, Guy has a heart to heart with Grug about Eep and just their strained relationship in general. They patch things up, and together with Phil go forth to kick some monkey ass. And they reunite and things are okay again. Blah, blah, blah. Wow this got weak near the end, um but this interview sums it up pretty good for me tho.
âWas it always the idea to introduce a second family?â Yeah, that was there in my first pitch. You have the Croods come across another family, the Bettermans, who are a more evolved family, and these two families couldnât be more different. The Croods lead with their heart, and the Bettermans lead with their brain. Of course, thereâs conflict, they face challenges, but they learn to appreciate each otherâs differences â not just to live with each otherâs differences but to almost celebrate them. Thereâs a lot going on. Thereâs a lot of characters in this one. Thereâs a lot of wonderful, powerful themes. But itâs a ridiculous comedy too.
Basically, Guy is having a midlife crisis at the age of 19 and gets his shit together, Eep gets a better understanding of her boyfriend, and Grug finally backs tf off so we can get Croods 3 where Eep and Guy have a kid :U also Iâve been calling A New Age the âShrek 2âł of the Croods in terms of how the story seems to be shaping up with Guy, Eep and the two families, Iâm hoping Iâm right because that would be some delicious development to see.

RATE THE EPISODE 155 responses
94.2% of respondents gave the episode either a 4 or a 5, with the definitive majority being 5s. In addition, there was only a single grade (2) below a 3. Very nice!
Probably the best episode post marley
HYPE
One of the best non-action episodes so far, with perfect adaptation of given scenes. Really looking forward to next episode.
Very emotional and exciting. Pacing was great.
Much better than the last
Must watch episode.Â
Loved it
WHICH MOMENT AT LEVI AND ZEKEâS LOCATION WAS YOUR FAVORITE? 155 responses
Levi and Zeke had more than a few moments in this episode, so we asked you which one of those was your favorite. The definitive majority (60.6%) stated that they clearly preferred the scene of Levi lamenting the deaths of his comparades in pursuit of saving Eren over the years. A noted minority (21.9%) also seemed to enjoy the scene of Zeke telling Levi that he must not be popular or the scene wherein the truth about Ragako is revealed (8.4%). Levi accusing Zeke of being guiltless or learning about Erenâs escape from prison garnered less praise.
WHICH MOMENT INVOLVING FALCO, GABI, THE BLOUSE FAMILY AND NICOLO WAS YOUR FAVORITE? 155 responses
That being said (previous question), the majority (plurality?) of the episode was taken up by the second part of Gabiâs Bizarre Adventure. As such, we also decided to ask you which of those moments was your favorite. The plurality (44.5%) gave their preference to seeing Mr. Blouse deescalate the situation. In second place (16.8%) we had Nicolo revealing the truth about the wine. Closely behind, 16.1% stated that they most appreciated seeing Gabi and Falco find Nicolo in the restaurant cellar. Finally, 12.9% enjoyed seeing Nicolo and Gabi argue. The rest of the options (Kaya suspecting a romantic relationship, the Blouse Family enjoying Nicoloâs food and the Blouse kids calling Gabi a bumpkin) didnât garner as much fanfare.Â
Mr. Blouse's line about the children in the forest is one my favorite lines in the whole story, and this is such a major turning point for GabiâI'd been looking forward to this episode, and it did not disappoint!
Papa Blouse is wisest man in this universe, prove me if Iâm wrong!
WHICH MOMENT INVOLVING THE SURVEY CORPS WAS YOUR FAVORITE? 154 responses
A fair bit of the episode was also taken up by the Survey Corps doing their own investigating. We also asked what your favorite moment from those segments was your favorite. 45.5%, a plurality, stated that it was Eren showing up and telling AM that he wanted to talk. Another relatively popular option with almost 17% was Hange & Co. learning about Flochâs involvement with the wine. Almost 15% chose the scene with Mikasa saving Gabi from Kayaâs attack as the one they preferred the most and 11% said that the scene with Nicolo saving Jean and Connie from drinking the tainted wine was their favorite. Other scenes, like Armin and Mikasa talking with Gabi and the rest of the major SC members learning about the wine were less popular.
ZEKE ACCUSES LEVI OF BEING UNPOPULAR. LEVI DENIES THIS. WHAT DO YOU THINK? 155 responses
Zekeâs accusation is one of the funnier interactions he has with Levi (in the opinion of the person writing these small paragraphs), so itâs no surprise that 40.6% thought that it was rather funny how defensive Levi got over it, even if they werenât sure how popular the man himself was. 32.9% seemed to believe that Levi was actually rather popular, owing to his title of âHumanityâs Strongestâ. 12.3% thought that although his image might be popular, but that it was most likely restricted among members of the Survey Corps. Finally, a minority was, in fact, convinced that Levi wasnât popular at all, really.Â
Man slut Levi tapping dem beeyatches playing dem hoes
If Zeke knew how much pussy Levi got from the fangirls heâd hide every woman he knows from Levi
I mean he's definitely popular among those who idolize him, but he's an awkward grumpy gay so I bet a lot of people are put off by his personality when they meet him lol. But he's best boi and I love him
BrO he knows hes hella popular, heâs just humble like that đ
i think he's popular but probably hasn't taken advantage of it bc he's awkward LMAO
Actually in Season 1, random villagers were calling out to him by name. On Paradis he's got clout with that killstreak
It could be one of those self aware manga moments? Like breaking 4th wall but much more subtle?Â
He is definitely popular. But anyway what I noticed here is that it's a little different in anime and manga. In anime, he was kind of defensive which is funny and cute. In manga, he looked more like he was lamenting that he used to be popular back when killing titans was the only thing important. Anyway, regardless, I like both versions.
Levi as a story (humanity's strongest!! He took out a million titans on his own) is popular among the survey corps/army. Levi the actual man is awkward as fuck. He's one of those heroes who you don't want to meet cause it turns out he's short and grouchy and ill-mannered in actuality.
he's popular with hanji hehehe
He's gotta be pretty popular just because 1) he was always next to erwin and 2) he survived this long
He's totally popular... in the fandom.
I mean, it's pretty obvious that he's admired for being humanity's strongest, so yeah, he's popular.
PAPA BLOUSE SAYS THAT IT IS UP TO THE ADULTS TO SHOULDER THE SINS OF THE PAST, AND TO âKEEP THE CHILDREN OUT OF THE FOREST.â WHAT DO YOU THINK? 154 responses
Mr. Blouseâs speech seemed to resonate with the majority of the fandom (64.9%), who thought his sentiment ringed true and that it was something one should strive for. 25.3% of respondents noted that although the sentiment wasnât wrong per say, it was too idealistic for how the âreal worldâ functioned. Finally, a small minority wasnât having it and seemed to think that children were no different from adults in this cruel worldâąïž (Thanks, Mikasa and Bertholdt.)Â
It's expected that children will inherit some of the sins of the past, but it's the responsibility of adults to teach kids to do and be better.
Generational wounds require generational healing
Children are inevitably gonna have to bear the sins of the past until the world as we know it is destroyed and rebuilt into a better world
Normally I would agree excoet those are Gabi's own actions we're talking about...
In a perfect world, children wouldn't have to inherit the sins of the previous generation, but the AoT world is far from perfect. But, sheesh, what these kids are having to deal with is just unfathomable.
Weak, pathetic coward and I lost all respect for him as a man
Blouse Parents MVP's this ep.Â
I agree that you shouldn't pass on the hate onto new generations, but I don't think that shouldering all the sins is EVERY adult's responsibility either.
WHAT DO YOU THINK, DID MAPPA DO THE DRAMATIC RESTAURANT SCENE JUSTICE? 152 responses
The restaurant scene was rather dramatic, all things considering, so it was no wonder that getting its atmosphere through was of key importance. The overwhelming majority was very happy with what was shown on screen, with 67.1% thinking MAPPA went above and beyond and 27% simply thanking the animation studio for the accurate adaptation. A few people, in contrast, thought that the manga conveyed the tone more effectively than the anime did.Â
I just wanted to see Sasha eating pizza :(Â
It was freaking amazing, absolute perfectionÂ
Mixed feelings! I really loved the tension, emotion and voice acting! But I'm a bit sad they didn't include the sasha flashback bits that could've added to the emotions.
A COUPLE MEMORIES OF SASHA EATING NICOLOâS FOOD AND LEARNING TO HUNT WITH HER FATHER WERENâT ANIMATED. DO YOU MISS THESE SCENES? 154 responses
The flashbacks with Sasha eating pizza were cherished by a small part of the fandom, so it is no surprise that at least a certain part of the fandom was disappointed in not seeing these panels animated. That segment, as mentioned, was rather small, as only 10.4% stated that it was a near deal breaker for them. In contrast, 58.4% were willing to accept the cut, even if there was a small part of them that wished that it was animated. Some stated that they never cared about those panels at all and 22.7% simply never noticed the cut.Â
No, I like it that we can focus on Sasha's parents' faces during the speech
I miss those scenes, but including them wouldn't flow nicely with this medium
I really wanted to see her eating pizza but I knew it wouldn't make it in. It wouldn't make sense with the tone of the main scene.
NOW THAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE WHOLE WINE PLOT, DO YOU THINK THE MAIN CAST WAS EXEMPT FROM CONSUMING THE WINE BECAUSE OF EREN? 148 responses
Many have argued that Eren was pretty reckless with allowing the wine plot to happen. Though 40.5% are certain that the plan truly was only to have higher ups drink the wine (and perhaps Eren assumed there would be no risk to his friends). 18.9% believe that neither Yelena nor Zeke cared about who would drink the wine, but that Eren negotiated terms with them. 18.2% on the other hand believe that Yelena/Zeke actively avoided getting his friends involved, knowing that he wouldnât approve of it. 9.5% canât say for certain, and only 8.1% believe that Eren didnât care if his friends drank the wine at all, and that Nicolo is the one who actively spared them.Â
Itâs paths Yams donât gotta explain shit
Priority probably went to the military police and garrison- Leviâs team in the forest makes a big deal about getting the wine.Â
They thought they might still need the scouts after a scream so it was made sure they wouldn't drink any.
I think Eren maybe saw enough about what was gonna happen that he didn't have to vocalize or care too much about who drank the wine. Although, poor Pyxis and the rest. Eren has had contempt for "lazy" military higher ups before, but he also saw people like Hannes change. Idk, maybe he felt their lives were worth sacrificing.
Plot convenience. At least Hange is in my opinion a high up if Nile and Pixis are too.
I think eren had something to do with the wine not being distributed to the survey corps, whether it was him directly or if it was zeke and yelena knowing that it would've pissed eren off, but obviously eren didn't do anything to specifically prevent it because if niccolo hadn't stopped them, main cast would've drank itÂ
I think it didn't matter if only the higher-ups got to drink the wine, but since Niccolo had kind-of relations to Jean and co., he didn't want them to drink it.
DO YOU THINK MAPPA EFFECTIVELY FORESHADOWED AND BUILT UP THE WINE PLOT? 148 responses
The wine plot was built up meticulously over the course of months in the manga, which allowed for a whole bunch of theories to prop up. The anime goes by quicker, naturally. So we asked if you felt that the build up for said plot was done well in the adaption. The overwhelming majority thought so, with 48% stating that they felt MAPPA did an even better job than the source, in contrast to the 35.8% who stated their belief in Isayamaâs superiority. On the other hand, a fair few also stated that they didnât enjoy MAPPAâs portrayal of this subplot and preferred the original. Weâve also gotten a fair few write-ins, mostly stating that itâs hard to compare the two.Â
I think it's hard to compare because in the manga we had months in between the first foreshadowing and the reveal that there was something up with the wine. We had time to simmer and theorize, the anime didn't have much time to delve deeper into that particular moment especially with everything else going on in the series at the same time. They did a good job!
no real opinion either way
Yes, they did it accurately.
Idk man
It was good, even with the manga.
Hard to say bc in the manga, I felt completely blindsided and surprised. And, of course, I knew what was happening in the anime. Both were well done, I think.
I think it was way on the nose. It was better and subtler in manga.
I have no opinion
It has been so long, I forgot how it went down exactly in the manga. MAPPA's version was good though.
I don't particularly prefer one over the other. I think MAPPA did a really good job building up this plot.Â
They did good, though it was a little more obvious here. Then again, I knew it was coming already, so eh.
THE SCENE WHERE LEVI FINDS OUT THE MILITARY PLANS TO HAVE SOMEONE EAT EREN IS IN BETWEEN THE RESTAURANT SCENES. DO YOU THINK THIS WAS A GOOD REARRANGEMENT? 150 responses
As seen in the season prior, MAPPA has rearranged certain scenes with the narrative. This time itâs the Levi/Zeke forest scene, juxtaposed with the restaurant scenes. A plurality (42.7%) thought the change worked in its favour. 18.7% didnât mind it too much, but did prefer Isayamaâs version of events and a few thought the change was simply bad outright. 33.3% thought the change didnât really make a difference one way or the other. There was also a write-in.Â
The complaint O have its that these scene occurs at night and the restaurant one was in briad daylight, so it felt odd because Im assuming its the same say.
THE VISUALS OF LEVI REMEMBERING THE DEATHS OF HIS COMRADES WHEN RESCUING EREN ARE DIFFERENT IN THE ANIME THAN THE MANGA. WHO DID IT BETTER? 154 responses
There was somewhat of a contrast between the flashbacks experienced by Levi in the manga and anime. We asked which version you preferred. Though most (57.8%) noted that both versions were nice, 31.8% said that they preferred the animated version, in contrast to the 10.4% who liked Isayamaâs art better.
Weâve also gotten a very passionate write-in for this one.Â
I'M SO UPSET THEY DIDN'T ANIMATE THE PANEL OF EREN'S FACE NEXT TO LEVI'S FROM WHEN HE SAVED HIM THE FIRST TIME IN TROST. Like I get it that they wanted to focus on all of the people Levi has lost, but in comparison with the manga it makes it seem like Levi doesn't even care about Eren anymore. If they had a shot where Levi is thinking about Eren specifically before focusing on his comrades, then it would've made more sense why he basically rejected the plan to have Eren be eaten. It would've shown that Levi still cares about Eren and doesn't want him to be killed unless there's nothing else they can do. It just feels like the anime (both WIT and Mappa) is constantly undermining Eren and Levi's relationship (and don't even get me started on how much worse it is in the dubbed version). Although, to be fair, the anime seems to do that to all of Eren's relationships that aren't with Mikasa. Like not even from a shipping perspective; even his relationship with Armin got parts ignored in favor of replacing them with moments with Mikasa. But whatever. Levi still cares about Eren, and I just wish the anime did a better job at showing that.
LEVI IS CUT OFF BEFORE HE GETS A CHANCE TO TELL THE SOLDIERS THEY SHOULD HAVE ZEKE EATEN INSTEAD, AND THAT THEY CAN ATTACK MARLEY AGAIN IF NEED BE. DO YOU THINK WE WILL GET THIS PART OF THE CONVERSATION NEXT EPISODE BEFORE HE TRIES TO MAKE A MOVE ON DEBILITATING ZEKE? 148 responses
Leviâs lines focused on explaining himself were cut a bit short in this episode, so we were wondering if we were going to hear them next episode. As it turns out, 49.3% believe so, stating that theyâre important for the story and its context. In contrast, 20.9% believed that these lines were not actually necessary and werenât going to be shown. 29% canât say for sure, one way or another.Â
Maybe it will be shown next chapter? MAPPA does that often.
A lot of missing dialogue from Levi that look important for the final chapter
IN THE FINAL SCENE, DO YOU THINK EREN APPEARS MORE SOMBER THAN MENACING IN COMPARISON TO THE MANGA? 151 responses
The vast majority of the fandom feels that MAPPA really brought out the somber expression Eren wore as he prepares to break the hearts of his friends, feeling that it signifies how regretful Eren is of what heâs about to say. 11.9% felt it was hard to read his expression properly due to the scene being cut off. 7.9% feel the opposite of the majority. While they agree he appears more somber, they arenât buying it as genuine for a minute. Only a small handful felt that he still looked as menacing as in the manga.Â
My boi is looking positively dead inside
More depressed, less menacing.
Yes, and I didn't like it. Manga version is better.
Yes, he seems more somber than menacing but Idk why. Even after the latest chapter, I still dk if he is/was acting or really explaining how he felt in a sense. Still not sure if he's like, "fuck it, I'm burning the whole world" or "I don't want to but I have to do this."
I like it in manga way more
He looks regretful in both manga and anime to me?
IT WOULD APPEAR THAT EPISODE 14 WILL ADAPT THE REST OF CHAPTER 112, ALONG WITH THE ENTIRETY OF CHAPTER 113. GIVEN THAT ACTION GENERALLY IS MUCH QUICKER TO ADAPT THAN NON-ACTION, DO YOU THINK EPISODE 14 WILL FEATURE ANY SCENES BEYOND THOSE TWO CHAPTERS? 147 responses
As weâre coming to seasonâs end, one canât help but wonder how the rest of the episodesâ content will be spread out, knowing that it ends on 116. We asked if you believed Episode 14 will feature content from post-Chapter 113. The majority (55.1%) didnât seem sure. But some (19.7%) thought that we were going to see elements from 114. As for the rest, a few thought that it was going to simply end on 113, some believed we might get anime-only content, a few thought we were going to see 115 scenes and some just didnât care.Â
Nah. I think itâll end exactly where 113 ends
Tbh I'm too lazy to see what the next few chapters cover but they've been rearranging a lot of scenes in the past few episodes, so probably.
IN LINE WITH THE PREVIOUS QUESTION, DO YOU THINK WEâLL GET ANY MORE STORY REARRANGEMENT IN THIS SEASON? 148 responses
MAPPA has taken some creative liberties when adapting this season, including the rearrangement of certain scenes between episodes. The question posed was whether MAPPA will do it again. A slight plurality (49.3%) believed that it was going to happen again, in contrast to the 41.2% who werenât sure. A select either didnât think itâs going to occur or just didnât care.
WHICH SCENE FROM THE PREVIEW ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO? 154 responses
The majority (55.2%) seems to be most enthralled with seeing the EMA Table Talk on screen, followed by a notable amount (37.7%) of folks who were most looking forward to seeing another battle between Levi and Zeke. A select few (7.1%) were instead most interested in seeing the scene with Hange, Floch and Shadis.Â
Mmgh
How dare you make us chose between these three scenes, this was so hard, I'm looking forward all three !
ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS ON THE EPISODE?
M O N K EÂ J U I C E
I hate Floch more than ever, and that cliffhanger at the end was a cruel spot to leave us at for a whole week.
SHHHH
That iconic Eren holding his bloody hand scene was spot-on!
Why no Mikasa hugging Gabi?????Â
itâs a real 3 ring shitshow- survey corps made into clowns, children screaming, monkey business, unamused adults, and the ringmaster just waltzed on into the middle of it.
I was disappointed at first when I saw the screenshots and spoilers, but man, when I watched the entirety, that was some great acting and pacing. Way better than the previous 2 episodes. Thank you MAPPA! Really hoping they do well again next episode. Could be the as great episode 6/7! And thank you as always, SNK poll team!
Thankfully this first part is almost over. The manga is legendary and that season is barely good. I'm so disappointed. And I really liked Eren's expression better in the manga. I don't understand why they changed it.
I miss the rotoscoping from the first Mappa episodes. Everything looks a bit stiff.
I cried more in this episode than I have at any other this season so far smh.Â
When Mikasa stops Kaya from stabbing Gabi. In the manga it seems that Mikasa was protecting Gabi and bringing her head close to her chest, but in the manga she looked somewhat uncomfortable. And it wasn't appreciated enough. I also did not like that they excluded Hange moments because it helped the way of seeing her as a leader and the scene of Levi thinking about his dead comrades looked very simple to me. I prefer manga. but the voice actors were amazing! I liked the episode but it is not one of my favorites.
i didnt think i could hate floch any more than i already did but the way mappa animated him made me want to punch my laptop omg
Gabi deserves what she got. Shame I lost all respect for Mikasa for stopping Kaya from killing Gabi.
Mikasa is dead to me. So is Sasha's dad. WHY would they just let Gabi walk away scott free?
As a Gabi hater, this is where fandom hypocrisy gets me in regards to Mr. Braus and Mikasa sparing Gabi. Mr. Braus becomes widely regarded as some virtuous and compassionate saint while Mikasa is bad for stopping Kaya. They BOTH suck for betraying Sasha's memory. Poor Sasha deserved so much better.
sorry my only thoughts are PUNCH PUNCH PUNCH PUNCH.Â
That scene with Jean + Wine Bottle hit real different after recent events..Â
ALL HAIL SUPREME GOD EMPEROR OF ELDIA FLOCH FORSTER!
The voice acting in the restaurant scene had me crying. Had to pause it
The shading and animation in the forest look awesome which could really make the Levi vs. Zeke fight outshine the Manga.
Mr. Braid's speech was just as cringe in the anime as it was in the manga. Shame on him for not avenging his daughter.
I think the manga did better in the scene where Kaya was about to kill Gabi in how sudden it was. In the anime, we got to follow Kaya's whole trajectory up until she was stopped by Mikasa, so Mikasa saving Gabi didn't feel as monumental. They did great on Kaya's murderous rage and breakdown though.
As long as I live I will never understand why Mr. Braus could be so pathetic as to forgive his daughter's killer. Especially knowing what happens later in, no true parent would just let their childs killer into their family. It's disgraceful.
Gabi sucks

when i was writing my answer for the second part of this ask from alicia, i actually came up with a fic idea but since my schedule is pretty packed for a while to come, i probably wonât be able to turn this idea into an actual fic. so to keep this from fading away into the oblivion that is my awful memory, iâmma just do what ive made this blog for, which is rambling away:
thereâs this hongkong tv show i watched ages ago, but one of the subplot really stuck with me. it follows one of the main characters on his journey to his eventual greatness. in this subplot, heâs stuck in an ice cage and, every night, heâd meet a girl (circumstances are a bit icky, but letâs digress). the ice cage is so dark and freezing that, to both of them, it feels more dreamlike than reality. they even prefer to each other as âmá»ng langâ and âmá»ng cĂŽâ which loosely translates to âdream manâ and âdream ladyâ.
later on, the girl (who turns out to be a princess) hosts an event to search for a consort (although, in honesty, sheâs hoping to meet her dream man again). in the event, she hides behind some thick drapes that hide her identity, and asks her suitors questions that only her dream man would be able to answer â or answer correctly, anyway. the guy only comes to the event out of obligation, rather than any actual wish to be the prince consort. however, his intention changes as his turn to go âmeetâ the princess comes, and then the questions, and then the realization that his dream lady is just behind those drapes.
i just find it so poetic that they only meet each other through bizarre circumstances, that they donât even know of each otherâs true identity, only falling in love with each otherâs voice and wits. then, after a while apart, they find each other again, through sheer coincidence, and are able to reconcile on what theyâd thought was only a lost connection.
which, ahh, makes me think of an AU, of sorts, for protagoneil. perhaps, they wouldnât meet in an ice cage, but in a prison (idk, thatâs just what my mind decided on), maybe in some place where theyâre held captive in rooms next to each other, a place with rules so reclusive that they never get to see each other, only a voice as proof of the otherâs existence. their situation â being locked up in a room with only a small window as indication that the outside world does exist, although distant â would make their interaction with each other so surreal, as if the other is nothing more than a figment of their imagination, another sign that theyâve gone mad in this captivity.
hell, we can make this even more tragic by setting in the tenet âverse, post-canon. perhaps a mission went awry, and the protagonist finds himself captured by some antagonists with greedy, self-serving purposes for tenetâs inversion technology. perhaps, the protagonist thinks neilâs voice â or whoever it is that sounds so much like the neil he once met â coming through the wall is just his mind coping to the loneliness and isolation. heâs never had problems with either before, but the circumstances are different now. now heâs got a ghost living up in his head, that heâs been missing and thinking about more than heâd ever admit to another soul.
i imagine their conversations can only be held in the night, spoken so quietly â barely above a whisper â so as to not alert the guards. the secrecy drown in complete darkness truly adds another layer of surrealism to it all. they never exchange names â the protagonist bc he doesnât want to compromise himself, and neil bc well, if the protagonist doesnât bother to offer name then why should he?
the things they talk about are simple, although unclear on whether what is true and what is warped into something not quite a lie, but close. they talk mostly to keep themselves sane (ironic, isnât it?), to have a little distraction from the horrid things await them when morning comes.
i imagine the protagonist would wake up one day, call for neil, but get no answer in return. he tries more times, through many nights but still, no answer. neilâs just gone, so suddenly, and the protagonist canât decide which sense of the word is worst. eventually, after a few more days of torture, of wondering and dreading, the protagonist finds his freedom.
itâs a joined effort, from himself and the tenet team sent to rescue him. i imagine the protagonist checking the room besides, finding it vacant of any furniture and living soul. he decides there that, yeah, perhaps the time in and out of inversion, paired with the isolation and torture he was put through, has really done a number on his mental state.
then, some months later, the protagonist would meet the voice in his head once again, but this time, with confirmation that itâs been real all along.
see, neilâs been moved to another holding facility. the antagonists have wanted him to work for them; have taken interests in the research heâs been doing on a particular field of physics and decided that he would be perfect to help them in their malicious plot for greed. neil... well, i wouldnât say they broke through him, but he did agree eventually. the torture had been too much, and he was tired â he hated having to go back to the cell they were holding him in, facing this sickening dread as he questioned his sanity.
the voice in his cell had been a great reprieve from the undue punishments on his body, but not enough to completely elevate him from the pain of it. so he âbrokeâ. he agreed to work with the antagonists, to save himself since it was obvious that no one ever would.
and thatâs how the protagonist finds him again; when he breaks down the antagonistsâ second location and discovers a compliant neil seemingly working for the people that was going to put a whole lot of lives in danger for their own greedy purposes. before they can say anything to each other, though, neilâs taken out by another agent â a sleeping dart placed carefully on his neck and pushed. the protagonist never did get the agentsâ identity, having lost track of them in the midst of chaos going around him.
later, when neil is put in their medical care facility, the protagonist stands outside of his room, watching him sleep through the glass window and listening to a report about his conditions. it contains everything from the moment neil went missing from his london flat (presumed dead), to the time heâs spent under the antagonistsâ captivity, to the point where they found him. then, the protagonist is shown a document, including various equations and graphs and terms that mostly went through his head.
he looks to the reporting agent, expecting a better explanation. the agent points out that the equations are wrong, but so delicately that she wouldâve missed it if she hadnât thought to take another, harder look.
âeven if theyâd gotten with it, their plan wouldâve failed. that document youâre holding in your hand ensures that.â she turns to look at neil, regarding his sleeping figure. âhe mightâve given into the idea of ever getting out of their claws, but he never gave in. he never truly gave them what theyâd wanted from him.â
all of that winds down to one simple fact: neilâs passed the test, and the protagonist knows what that means. the protagonist has to wait a few hours for it, though; for neil to finally wake up and have his induction into tenet. in the meantime, he sits on the couch inside neilâs room, and waits, watching neilâs eyelids flutter in sleep, and feeling sorrow/rage/frustration grip tight to his being as he thinks about things that has and will happen to neil.
when neil wakes up, the protagonist is just right there to welcome him into the afterlife. he keeps his speech short, giving neil a brief overview of his situation, but neil isnât really listening. the protagonistâs words blur together, not because of neilâs groggy mind, but because of a single, simple realization. it hits him so hard that he just canât keep in the lone tear falling from his eyes. the protagonist sees this, and his heart aches â remembering how itâs felt when he was the one who was lying on the bed, getting told that his entire team had failed to make it out alive â and unlike his own recruited, the protagonist tries to comfort neil with, âlisten, i know itâs hardââ
but neil just cuts him off entirely, reciting a phrase heâs said before, to the man heâs thought was just a dream his tired mind made up to keep him company at the late hours of the night. it stops the protagonist right in his tracks, staring down at neil, breathing harshly through his lips because he canât believe it. heâs thought, also, but apparently, heâs thought wrong.
âiâm glad youâre real,â neil says, as he watches the same realization heâs experienced dawn on the protagonistâs face.
the protagonist takes a moment to respond, still a little bit stunned by neilâs words. then, he takes an easy breath, relaxing his tense shoulders, smiles down at neil - small and private, something just for the too of them - and says, âme too.â
because despite everything that had happened to them both during their time in that prison, they still had each other. they were there for each other, and the protagonist gets it now - the beautiful friendship that neil had alluded to. it is quite beautiful - poetic too, maybe - for them to have found each other in such a hopeless place, then lost that connect, then reconnecting it again because fate has willed it so.
the protagonist canât help, even more so now that they are together again, looking forward to the things they will get up to - as promised. neilâs smile, sleepy yet sincere, tells him the very same thing.
#protagoneil#its only an idea so some parts are weird and super vague and just improbable#i really want to write it but damn i can't be profound enough to write something like this; and like i said my schedule is packed rip#and i have so many wips already ahhhhhhh#gotta finish them all before i can jump on any other projects and i just love this one to much to leave it there collecting dust#so here goes#if anyone wanna hop on this please do#you'll get my eternal love in return#also kudos for anyone who knows/figures out the show i'm talking about here#it's based on a very famous novel (that i have never read before; but have heard enough of it from my dad while watching the show with him)#(fun times; maybe that's why the show (or parts of it) really sticks to me hah)#idk what to tag this#*my ramblings#my prompt#ig???#i'll figure something out later but this will be it for now

cayyyy can i request a bit? domestic modern varigo but it's hugo gay panicking bc v just claps back? safe flight btw!! love you and all ur fic babies!!
Ok sorry babes I saw gay panic and modern and the rest went out the door!!! I hope you still enjoy!!! A continuation of my day 5 varigo week prompt!!! Enjoy!!!! â€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïž
It had been two weeks since heâd ran into the most beautiful stranger heâd ever seen, and he couldnât stop thinking about him. Sure heâd been able to keep his cool during their initial encounter, but since then he found himself becoming more and more flustered whenever he thought about their upcoming meeting in a few hours. Varian had texted him only forty eight minutes after their disastrous meeting, not that heâd been counting the minutes or anything. And after three failed attempts to meet they were finally meeting up at a local cat cafe that Rapunzel had insisted they go to. Realistically he knew he had nothing to worry about, there was no way this could go worse than their first meeting, but mentally he was freaking out. Heâd spent the last two weeks not only casually texting Varian, but also getting Rapunzel to share as much information about him as possible. He didnât know what the fuck was wrong with him. He hadnât cared this much about a date in a while, hell he hadnât even cared when it was a blind date, but now he was a fucking mess. And now it was time for him to meet with Varian.
He quickly grabbed his keys off the counter and headed out the door, the cafe only being about two blocks for each of them. Which was great because neither had a car. He hurried down the street, shooting Varian a quick message to let him know he was on his way, not five seconds later he got a reply.
Coffee Bean: see you soon!!
Hugoâs heart melted as he held the phone to his chest. Heâd heard the words before, but when they came from Varian it sent his heart pounding in his chest. Actually anything Varian did sent his heart fluttering. It stopped completely when he spotted the shorter, panic quickly rising in his chest. He looked like an absolute angel standing on the sidewalk, rocking back and forth on his heels slightly, his eyes glued to his phone. He wore a smiple pair of dark jeans, the bottoms rolled up around his dirty untied blue converse, a dark grey T-shirt underneath his too big blue flannel. Hugo glances down at his own outfit, a pair of black slacks, his freshly polished work shoes instead of his usual boots, a plain white button up with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, and a green vest left open to appear more casual. Shit. And it was with a startling realization that Hugo knew he was overdressed. He didnât have time to go back and change, heâd already told Varian he was on his way, if he took too long heâd think something happened, or worse that heâd been ditched. Hugo ducked into a nearby alleyway, shedding his vest and button up, tossing the button up behind a garbage can and praying it would still be there when they finished their date before throwing the vest back on over his white undershirt. There wasnât much he could do about his bottom half, but he hoped he didnât look too overly dressed now. He took a moment to compose himself before heading back onto the sidewalk.
âHey, Coffee Bean!â Hugo called, his heart fluttering as Varian turned to face him, offering him a small lopsided smile and a wave.
âI was starting to worry you got lost.â Varian teased, any nervousness he had when they met seemingly gone.
âHaha, me, lost? Psh, no.â Hugo said, a light dusting of pink already painting his cheeks. It was sweet Varian was worried and heâd made a fucking ass of himself. âUm, you look nice, I guess.â Fuck, he was so fucking stupid. âI mean you always look nice! Like constantly. Just in this constant state of nice.â
âJust nice? I thought I looked pretty sexy with coffee all over my shirt.â Varian said, pushing up on his tiptoes so he could smugly smirk at Hugo.
âI- Iâm- uh- you- yes.â Hugo stuttered, shooting a finger gun in Varianâs direction. Thankfully Varian just laughed.
âIâm just teasing, but you do look nice too.â Varian said, sinking back to his normal height. And Hugo quickly found he missed him being so close. âShall we head inside?â
âYes!â Hugo said, perhaps a bit too excitedly if the look Varian shot him was anything to go by. âI mean, Uh, unless you donât want to?â
âOh no, I do. You still owe me that coffee.â Varian said, swinging the door to the cafe open. Hugo followed close behind, mentally slapping himself for already making an idiot of himself. He should probably apologize for ruining his shirt again.
âHey, Var-â
âWhat do you want?â Varian asked, pointing to the menu on the wall before heading to the register. âIâll have a hot chocolate please.â
âIâll have a coffee, Uh, black.â Hugo ordered, cringing at his own order. He didnât even fucking like coffee, why did he do that? He hadnât even paid any attention as the barista rambled off their total until Varian held out his card. He didnât think as he grabbed Varianâs hand, preventing him from handing over the card. âItâs my treat.â
âI- I thought you were joking.â Varian admitted, his face flushing as he glanced down at their hands. Hugo quickly pulled back.
âN-no, I was serious. I told you Iâd get you that coffee.â Hugo said, handing over the cash to the barista and putting the change in the tip jar.
âBut I-â
âYou can thank me later.â Hugo said with a wink before tripping over a cat that had chosen that exact moment to rub at his leg. âFuck.â And the furry death trap had the audacity to hiss at him.
âShit, are you okay?â Varian asked, barely suppressing the laugh that bubbles from his lips. Hugo stares emptily at the ceiling, could he just disappear right now? Could this please be a dream? Was a redo possible? A cat jumped onto his stomach, apparently not. âAwww, this one likes you.â Varian cooed.
Hugo glanced down at it, the same gray bastard that just tried to kill him. âHeâs plotting my death I can feel it.â Hugo deadpanned, pushing himself up into a sitting position, staring in awe as Varian joined him on the floor.
âAw no, heâs just a sweetheart. Arenât you?â Varian said, scratching the cat underneath itâs chin, it immediately erupted into a series of purrs. He turned the tag over in his hands, glancing at its name. âRuddiger?â
âHeâs been here for a while.â The barista said, leaning over the counter, expanding when Varian tilted his head. âRuddiger. All of the cats are adoptable, Ruddyâs been here the longest.â
âIs that so, buddy? I canât see why.â Varian said, letting the furry beast crawl all over him.
âI can.â Hugo mumbled, not that Varian heard him, he was too focused on the furry fleabag.
âCan we adopt him?â Varian asked, why he asked him in the first place heâd never know, but he did with those wide blue eyes, his bottom lip jutting out into a pout, the cat squished against his face. And Hugo knew he was so fucking royally screwed. Heâd never be able to say no to this boy, and goddamn it he didnât think he wanted to.
âOkay. Fine.â Hugo grumbled, pinching the bridge of his nose, Varian letting out a squeal as he hugged the cat close.
âYou hear that Ruddy? Youâve got a home now!â Varian said excitedly, nuzzling the cat. Hugo smiled, completely enthralled watching Varianâs face light up with complete and utter happiness. They forgot about their drinks, and left the cafe, Ruddiger in tow, to get Varian all set up for his new friend. It definitely wasnât the date he had planned but he wouldnât change it nonetheless. Varian was perfect in every way and Rapunzelâs numerous descriptions of him did no justice to the boy in front of him. He hadnât even noticed the night was over until he was at Varianâs doorstep.
âIâm sorry this didnât go the way you planned.â Varian said, wiping his hands on his jeans, the furry bastard already settled inside his apartment.
âThatâs okay, this was a hell of a lot better than drinking coffee in some stuffy cafe.â Hugo said, stuffing his hands into his cat hair covered pants.
âIâm glad you think so, because you still owe me a coffee.â Varian said with a smirk.
âIâm- what?â Hugo said, the realization that he never actually bought Varian the coffee he promised dawning on him. âYouâre right.â
âYouâll get used to it.â Varian said with a wink, not giving Hugo a chance to respond before grabbing the front of his shirt and pulling him into a kiss. It was fast and a little sloppy, almost like he had to convince himself to do it before he backed out, but to Hugo it was perfect. And he didnât even care that his button down was gone when he got back to the alleyway.

Ok ok but What If i did write out the new story vibe
So it's like the twinswap au, where in that AfO collects Touya and Fuyumi for experimentation after The Incident, but, he goes ahead and nabs the other two as well.
Just, AfO, looking at Natsuo, small kid, angry kid, quirkless kid. An older brother, but also a younger one. White hair, grey eyes. A perfect combination of AfO and his own brother, it seems.
So AfO approaches, makes an offer- "I can help save your beloved older brother, I can heal and make him better, I can take you younger brother away so he isn't lost in the same way, I can make sure your sister never gets hurt like your mother. I just need you to work with me, since you're quirkless, you're special, you can help by holding and testing different quirk copies for me. Oh, and we can take care of your father too."
And well... Natsuo's a little kid. He loves his siblings with everything he has, and he has almost nothing.
So of course he agrees.
He agrees, and they're taken away. Fuyumi is led away by a doctor, explains that she's a compatible donor for Touya, don't worry, just a surgery, you'll wake up fine after, and your twin will be alive too. Shoto hides behind Natsuo when they're the only two left, and Natsuo tries to get over the feeling that he feels like a stranger. Quiet talk, perhaps. Slowly getting comfortable with each other.
And then the man comes back, gives Natsuo a 'copy' of a quirk, which feels weird, gives a headache, but isn't too bad. Has him talk about the backlash on a body that wasn't born with it. Has him report on anything stored inside, or new challenges, before switching out for another. Shoto watches silently, and sometimes they're given food or sent to bunk beds.
Three days of quirk testing later, the twins both wake up. Fuyumi now has fire as blue as their eyes, and Touya has ice as white as their hair. It fits their body better.
And then once the twins are healed, time to start training. Easier, at least, than Endeavor's. But not easy, Fuyumi's never had to train before, Touya still gets tired so fast.
But they get stronger. When Shoto turns 11, they start training him, now that they're experts on each side.
AfO tells them he has another ward, they can meet him once they have all finished training.
I don't know about Plot from there I only had a Vibe ok
But I'm feeling a connection in that another, smaller trafficking ring takes children Uraraka and idk someone else maybe Shinsou, bc man useful quirks am I right. Much easier to feed one young girl than to pay for moving heavy merch and supplies.
But anyway Aizawa takes some looking into that ring and obviously saves the kids, finds a link probably through trigger to AfO, and oh no now useful useful erasure is on the villain's radar again.
So then it becomes unstoppable force of Aizawa Getting The Children vs the immovable object of AfO's Manipulation and idk how that plays out but it sounds fun to watch
Like I said just a Vibe
*i dont actually know about shigaraki or the potatoing asdfd no clue head empty
#i dunno#slam all that idea together i guess#its kinda like the opposite of the commision roki au#hm i seem to be vibing with lots of natsuo love recently

31 Horror Movies for the Halloween Season
Well.. Itâs a little bit over 31 bc of sequels and such but itâs a fun title for horror recs! For the record these are in no particular order in like whatâs the best or anything! Itâs just a list of horror movie recommendations that might get you in the Halloween mood. I tried not to have huge well-known movies on here, but I did throw in a few just because I love them and couldnât resist. I did try to add small descriptions for each one, but given thereâs like 31 movies on here, they are rather short. Either way, hopefully youâll find one or a couple movies here that youâre interested in!
1. Trick âr Treat
A rather well-known one but is it really a list without Trick âr Treat? A fun horror anthology with four different stories that connect to each other in some way - including the fact they all take place on Halloween night! A fun one to actually watch on Halloween.
2. Hell House LLC
For the record there are two sequels (Hell House LLC 2: The Abaddon Hotel & Hell House LLC 3: Lake of Fire), however I have not seen either of them so canât include them here, but if you want to watch them Iâd say go check them out! Basically itâs a documentary style type film that follows what happened up to the days a horrible tragedy took place on the opening night of a haunted house attraction. No one knows exactly what actually went down, so the reason for the documentary is to attempt to figure out what truly happened that night.
3. Repo! The Genetic Opera
A horror musical! Itâs set in a future where organ failure is extremely common so naturally a huge company comes along and is like âOkay you can have an organ transplant, but you have a huge payment plan and if you canât pay then weâre just gonna kill you and take your organs back.â Also it has so many good songs would highly recommend if you havenât seen it (and you can stomach a bit of gore).
4. The Devilâs Carnival & Alleluia! The Devilâs Carnival
Another horror musical! And done by the same people who did Repo! For the record The Devilâs Carnival is only about an hour long but the sequel is a full length movie! A short quick explanation is that itâs set in Hell (unsurprisingly) and follows the people who end up there - also during this the Devil is planning an attack - but Iâll let you find out the rest if you havenât seen it yet.
5. Ju-On and/or The Grudge (Any Film)
Itâs my favorite horror franchise, so of course Ju-On was gonna end up on here! Whether it be the original Japanese films or the American remakes, it follows vengeful spirits who were murdered in their home and are taking revenge on anyone who enters.
6. Sinister & Sinister 2
Okay I know Sinister 2 is one not very well liked, but since I have seen it I decided I might as well include it (though I donât really remember my thoughts on it itâs been a while). Video tapes that contain children murdering their families and a mysterious being that may be at the center of it is the basic plot for these movies.
7. Tragedy Girls
Basically you got two best friends who capture a serial killer because they themselves want to become serial killers! Donât wanna say too much outside of that, as that is the basic plot concept honestly, but itâs a really fun movie.
8. The Final Girls
A girl dealing with the anniversary of her motherâs death ends up, with a small group of others, stuck in a horror movie that her mother actually starred in. Okay as much fun as this one is it does pull on the heart strings a bit I gotta admit. But itâs truly great and naturally has a feel of an older slasher movie.
9. You Might be the Killer
Another one thatâs got that older slasher movie vibe as it takes place at a camp. One where the counselors are getting picked off one by one by a masked killer. Comes in our protagonist, who is calling his friend, who isnât at the camp and also is a huge horror enthusiast, for help to figure out what to do and maybe figure out whatâs going on/who the killer is.
10. Danur (aka Danur: I Can See Ghosts)
A young girl who just wants friends finds them in the form of three potentially paranormal ones. Though it seemingly being just a childhood thing, it actually becomes of great importance as she gets older. This movie also has a sequel, Danur 2: Maddah.
11. Fright Night
For the record I am talking about the remake here, as I have not seen the original, but if you would prefer to watch that one - or maybe even both - go for it! Basically, teen starts to believe his new neighbor is a vampire after more and more people go missing. Also David Tennant is there if you go with the remake so thatâs always fun!
12. Tales of Halloween
Admittedly I wasnât too into this film, but I know a lot of people like it! Not too much to say, itâs a horror anthology with 10 different segments that take place on Halloween! So youâre bound to find something you enjoy within it, whether it be the paranormal, witches, or even just dumb fun horror comedy antics.
13. The Tag-Along
Based on an urban legend from Taiwan, âThe Little Girl in Redâ, it focuses on a man and his girlfriend. Of which the manâs grandmother suddenly goes missing one day - eventually leading to him discovering clues of a potential unknown little girl who had began following his grandmother around. There are two sequels to this movie as well that I have not seen yet, that being The Tag-Along 2 & The Tag-Along: The Devil Fish.
14. Three... Extremes
Another anthology film that contains three separate stories, each one coming from a different East Asian country. It also has a prequel, Three (or 3... Extremes II in the U.S.), and a full length film made from one of the stories within it, Dumplings.
15. The Hallow
Really feel like the point of this movie is like âDonât fuck with the woodsâ. As it basically focuses on a couple and their baby, who seems to be the target for the odd things happening to them that seems rather connected to the woods nearby.
16. The Devilâs Candy
A man moves with his family into a new home, and slowly begins to feel as though something is possessing him in a sense. That and also the potential fact his family is being targeted by the previous resident of the home.
17. Wake Wood
Apparently FMA did not teach us not to fuck with the dead enough, so hereâs a movie about a grieving couple that lost their daughter who move into a town that holds the power to bring someone back from the dead for only 3 days. Unfortunately like FMA, things go horribly wrong (just not... in the same way as FMA).
18. The Cabin in the Woods
College students go out to a cabin in the woods in which things quickly take a turn for the worst. Seems simple enough, but itâs so much more complicated than that - however I wonât be sharing any of those details for those who havenât watched it yet.
19. Prevenge
A pregnant woman whoâs husband has recently passed away, believes that her unborn child wants her to track down and kill everyone who was involved in the accident. An extremely wild but honestly rather fun time.
20. Youâre Next
Home invasion, baby! In which everything goes to hell for a family and their partners when masked killers start trying to kill everyone there. Though things take a turn quick and you start to wonder who is really the ones being hunted down here. (A fairly well known one, but I had to recommend it given one of my favorite characters in horror is in this movie)
21. Kuronezumi (aka Black Rat)
Not too much to say here basic plot wise. Six students receive texts from their dead classmate, they follow as the texts ask and go to the school at night, and then start getting targeted by a killer wearing a rat mask.
22. Lights Out
A family potentially being haunted by a creature that only appears when the lights go out? Plus a whole lot of family drama? Always fun truly! Itâs also somewhat based off a viral short film of the same name that the director had made before he got to make it a full length film.
23. Absentia
Absolutely had to put a Mike Flanagan movie on here. One that focuses on a pregnant woman whoâs started towards attempting to move on with her life after her husband disappeared seven years ago. However, as she takes a huge step towards doing so, something rather odd happens - which Iâll let you find out for yourself if you choose to watch it.
24. Halloween III: Season of the Witch
Perhaps itâs because itâs the one Halloween movie without Michael Myers, or perhaps itâs because I was blanking out on movies I watched that arenât extremely well-known, but I felt the need to add this one on here. It focuses on this man who is out to kill children on Halloween by using a line of Halloween masks. So basically another fun one to watch on Halloween!
25. The Barn
Teenagers go to a barn where thereâs a supposed curse that can awaken Halloween-themed monsters on Halloween night. What could possibly go wrong? Honestly another one that would be a lot of fun to actually watch on Halloween.
26. Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon
A really fun documentary type film where itâs set in a world where iconic horror slashers are actually real! And a documentary crew are out to make a movie centered around Leslie Vernon, who wishes to go down in history as another one of the famous slashers. This one is really just *chefâs kiss* to me, very much recommend if you havenât seen it.
27. Creep & Creep 2
Found footage type films in which we follow people who are hired by this rather concerning man to film him. Thatâs really all I can say unfortunately without trying to give away too much.
28. What We Do in the Shadows
Another documentary-style type movie! It tends to be more comedic than it is horror, but it follows  a group of vampires that live together! Sort of documenting their lives and how they survive day by day. Honestly itâs so ridiculous and hilarious, and I know many people have seen it by now but I have to recommend it none the less as itâs one of my favorites. Plus, it also has an equally hilarious tv series now that you can also give a watch!
29. The Banana Splits Movie
Who doesnât want to see the Banana Splits as animatronics that start randomly slaughtering people after the news that their show is going to be cancelled? Honestly itâs really just a fun, ridiculous movie that isnât meant to be taken seriously. Perhaps something to watch with friends to get in the mood for Halloween.
30. The Last Exorcism
Another one that has a sequel I have not seen: The Last Exorcism Part II. Another documentary style film (Sorry I added so many of these whoops), that follows a reverend who goes around performing fake exorcisms. Things start getting a bit more complicated though when lines start beginning to blur between what is real and what is fake while doing his current âexorcismâ he was asked to perform.
31. V/H/S & V/H/S 2
There is also a third film, V/H/S: Viral, however I have not seen that one. Not too much to say here, theyâre basically just an anthology of short horror films that are supposedly being shown from VHS tapes.

HIHI !Â
I go by Fany & she/her -- itâs been a looong time since I rped so honestly pretty excited to be here and get this muse on the road :> no lie itâll probably take me a bit to adjust and get in the groove of things so forgive my extra slowness but Iâd love to plot n chat with all of you peeps like actually please lets !! do have a profile page up youâre free to check ( still being worked on shh ), and a rules page thatâs really just more an info dump about rping with this mun & muse and some stuff about me in general if youâre curious ye
donât have any plots up for grabs sadly, yet, but brainstorming is much welcome
hereâs some tidbits about muse that might be helpful in the meanwhile tho ;
to start off, where she actually comes from;
From where her lineage diverged the Gwan bloodline has notoriously been known as very powerful divination magick practitioners within the Kyegeum house
alongside being super cordial with other houses and often the other genera as well, but generally aloof in matters that did not strictly concern them. this extended to the normal world and society as well
this was especially true for her grandpa, Gwan Youngchul
who ended up being turned in a surprise attack from a werewolf when the man had been out with his familiar companion -- Seok -- who despite best efforts could not save the witch from this sudden fate, could not stop their treasured bond severing
and despite managing to keep Youngchul alive through the whole ordeal, it would not take long ( if anything, suspiciously quick ) for a certain group of hunters to get whiff of the circumstance and swiftly rid off the ex-witch
Perhaps one bright side to look at was that he was able to communicate last wishes, some of which had already been written on letters hidden for the chance of an unlucky situation such as the one they were currently in arising. one of the wishes being a plea to protect his only daughter Jiyeong
At a tender age of seventeen Jiyeong took the news with surprising grace, not to say she wasnât devastated and cried but what seemed to be request of her father to bond with his familiar was accepted after a moment of thinking it over, and bonding ritual decided to take place within the week
Jiyeongâs mother had been the one to mainly oversee her training once abilities started manifesting, a Kyegeum witch herself, with very different abilities compared to her husband
It was perhaps no surprise then that Jiyeong became very adamant not long after fatherâs death to focus studies and abilities on what her father had been so revered for; divination
something his older sister, Jiyeongâs aunt, was known for as well and gladly helped the girl with alongside taking the widowed family under her wing and protection
Jiyong followed after her fatherâs footsteps in many other things, most notably making friends and upholding favorable relations to the other houses, other genera as well
was endlessly fond of nature magic too, had an abundance of flowers and plants in every nook and cranny, a beautiful garden she tended to with care
many would even say she was touched by the sun itself, vibrant and warm soul she was, nurturing not with only plants but people themselves
eventually met a man who slowly swept Jiyeong off her feet, and not but a few years later they had a child, naming her Sooah. my muse. weâll get to her in a bit I promise ._.
the man aka Dad is a human, just plain oleâ human. orphaned at a young age so while they wouldnât know for certain if he has any sliver of witchy magic in him itâs unlikely
insists he fell in love with Jiyong at first sight pretty much. which is frankly understandable she was such a lovely person ;u;
was surprisingly chill about all the, well, witch stuff and whatnot, very curious too but also did want her to be careful and if possible not be that involved with that world
for about next 10 years things went on fairly normally, ya know, living the happy family life, going to work, mingling with the magical side of society
then she started getting sick every so often, out of the blue, however nothing even remotely seeming serious. though it was odd for a witch to be affected with flu so often
she didnât think it was serious itself, and had a habit of hiding it in the beginning too when it wasnât even noticeable
until it got to the point it simply could not be ignored, could not be just a passing small thing, could not be cured by any means she knew
and the next thing anyone else knew she was gone. almost like someone had reached and snuffed out her flame, just like that
where in the story we get to Sooah, so;
her early life wasnât that special in honesty, if you donât count all the stories her mother told about the secret magical world she too would be part of one day, and the lineage she was to inherit, abilities she would discover, all to be learned together
she had been a deviously curious child, daydreaming every other moment and next begging to see if even take part in what her mother was doing with her own magick
Sooah was quite interested in the guy sometimes accompanying her too, a friendly face sheâd grown to know as Seok who she had learned eventually was momâs bonded familiar, a fact she was entirely too excited about. but who also was before bonded to her grandpa that the girl never got to meet herself
would not fail to mention to him many times how she was going to one day find a familiar to bond with too, someone who was fun and kind and wanted to go on adventures and they would be the bestests of friends ever. and definitely cooler than him
she was always eager to understand and practice the power inside her in general, which she was starting to more and more by the days, before the sudden passing of her mother
it broke her :<
dad too, for a while he was nothing but basically a walking shell. sheâs sure neither of them really truly recovered
backtracking just a lil because one very, very important notion was the familiar was of course bound to die soon along with the mom, Sooah was well aware of the fact by then and while she was stricken by grief at the time she was dedicated to finding him, no real plan in mind but urgent to know he was okay, like it would somehow make the situation any better
she did end up meeting him, understandably shaken himself but apparently already accepted own fate-- which at the moment did not sit well with her at all and Sooah, not even yet 14 years old, decided she was not going to let him just wither away and die alone how horrible would that be, how sad for that to be the end when her mom had exuded everything opposite, she was not going to let that happen no matter what
which meant the only thing she could actually do was to bond with Seok and by sheer force of will and maybe some tears - definitely some tears - did manage to convince for him to agree to it
a whole mess
she doesnât regret it one bit, absolutely refuses to, yet does occasionally wonder if it was the right thing to do or even fair to him
but ultimately sheâs glad he is in her life, aiding in any matter she may require, definitely now seen as a big brother she never had-- if sheâs not too busy calling him grandpa bc seriously heâs old as all fuck. it still surprises her from time to time
( okay but it is hilarious to think Seok going from being as old as he was, looking about 40 to then having a 14 year oldâs body lmaoo )
bless the grandma tho she was really a rock in this emotional time, even though she was dealing with the loss of her daughter, after having lost her husband so early in their lives too !
she kinda took over seeing to Sooahâs teaching and helping in any other way as well, more than welcoming to having her stay over for however long she needed or wanted to
sheâs still thankfully alive and has a good relationship with both Sooah and Seok ;u;
Dad on the other hand.
they have both moved out of the house the family used to occupy with mom, into their own places
also have a somewhat strained relationship nowadays, more to do with his insistence on getting her to quit all the witch stuff cause itâs dangerous yadda yadda and sheâs obviously not going to do that
not to say sheâs not paranoid herself, and knowing how both her mom and grandpa died barely halfway into their lives even more so
itâs not only made her fearful of same fate but made her swear to stay away from any sort of divination magic if she can help it, somehow convinced that to be a factor in all of it
does have randomly prophetic dreams though, but nothing that has been major or necessarily that important so sheâs.. okay with that. kinda. does keep a dream journal just in case
Itâs coming up 10 years after the momâs death, so Iâm sure thereâs been some rumors or other witches wondering if the Gwan family was just cursed or something, probably mostly from older and the more traditional types. doesnât help Soaahâs dad being a plain human. or that sheâs not sure if that might just actually be the case oof
as thus sheâs definitely a lot more withdrawn when it comes to the other houses, or even Kyegeum themselves, doesnât exactly feel like part of the community if you will
but is friendly to everyone and usually can be outwardly seen as having nothing weird or unusual going on beyond what youâd expect of a typical witch in this day and age
designs and sometimes makes jewelry for The Gem Lab actually, or if an individual knows to ask her personally Sooah does take custom work too ! and yes they all have very carefully picked gems or crystals, often imbued with enchantments of basic protection or if one wants something very specific she can probably do it
is kinda rich?? like grandpa was very up in there and left part of his inheritance to the mom, who of course left part of hers to Sooah. who doesnât really like using that money as it is so itâs just sitting in a whole separate account. probably partly also because sheâs not exactly the best when it comes to handling finances so. yeah.
uhh
this is so long already god Iâm not gonna get into her personality or any of that now, yall can figure it out along the way or read up what I have on her page -- which isnât much yet but it is something !! Iâm def figuring her out myself too as I go haha
so ay if you wanna plot drop by my ims please ;; I do have a discord if you feel thatâs easier too just ask for it !
also go show some love to Seok ouo
#( ;âintro )#( ;âlore )#( ;âooc )#lies down- there we go#so I ramble hello guess some things haven't changed#psa: some things have been revised cause I'm a dumdum. nothing too big or what directly relates to muse so no worries!

Mark of Athena Re-read
Hey guys! If youâve been keeping up with my last couple of posts, youâll know Iâve been re-reading the Heroes of Olympus (HoO) series by Rick Riordan, starting with the Son of Neptune. If you want to my thoughts on it (spoilers included) and my background with the series, click here. I made a little bit of rant post about my feelings about the HoO series overall so far and you can find that here! This post will be about the Mark of Athena (MoA) and as always, spoilers abound.
Soooo yâall...I think this book is worse than the Lost Hero. I feel so bad for saying that bc I hated tLH (Like Iâd give that book 2 stars) but god, this was so bad. No wonder I forgot what happened when I originally read it. Before I get into it, I will say Iâm usually not negative in my âreviewsâ-Iâll give credit where itâs due (I did that in tSoN with Hazel and Frank who werenât really my fav characters to start with) but this book has very little redeemable aspects imo. So Iâll start with the thing I was most irritated about: Piper.
Piper...Piper...Piper. Gods, none of her chapters ever passed the Bechdel test. I DESPISE her and I hated every single one of her chapters. With characters like Frank, I admitted that sometimes his chapters were a bit boring but I never hated the guyâs narration. Piper, however, is an insecure hypocrite. Let me show you.
So at one point, Annabeth, Piper, and Hazel meet up with Aphrodite. The POV is Annabethâs and while Aphrodite is talking to them, it seems like Piper is just embarrassed to have her around.Â
âMother!â Piper said. âYouâre embarrassing me.â âWell, I donât see why,â the goddess said. âJust because you donât appreciate my fashion tips, Piper, doesnât mean the others wonât. I could do a quick makeover for Annabeth and Hazel, perhaps silk ball gowns like mineââ âMother!âÂ
And a few lines later she says again â âMother, Piper said, âis there a reason youâre here?ââ (30).Â
Okay so someone tell me why this girl says 10 pages later âBut also, Piper was secretly hurt not to have her mother to herself. Aphrodite had barely looked at her. She hadnât said a word about Jason. She hadnât bothered explaining her conversation with Reyna at all. It was almost as if Aphrodite no longer found Piper interesting. Piper had gotten her guy. Now it was up to her to make things work, and Aphrodite had moved on to newer gossip as easily as she might toss out an old copy of a tabloid magazineâ (40). LIKE GIRL MAKE UP YOUR MIND. Do you want your momâs attention or not? But Iâm highkey interested in what Aphrodite said to Reyna tho.
Letâs talk about Reyna for a second. First off, I feel so bad for her?? Percy turned her down-fine, he has a gf. Then I thought Jason had feelings for her but he says this in MoA, page 19: âItâs justâŠI never felt that way toward Reyna,â Jason said, âso I didnât think about its making you uncomfortable. Youâve got nothing to worry about, Pipesâ. Like damn can Reyna get any love?? I get that he doesnât like her anymore since he met Piper but to have never liked her? Thatâs rough. And notice how this quote is from page 19, but again on p. 40, Piper is still so insecure in their relationship. I donât sheâs listened to a word he said at all. Then towards the end of the book, she says oh I love you but she literally didnât know the manâs age prior to that. Like what?? Did they even kiss this book? I think like once lmao. Also speaking of the birthday thing, Piper says this while she waits for Jason to blow out his birthday candles.
âWell?â she urged. âBlow out the candles.â
Jason did. Piper wondered if heâd made a wishâhopefully that he and Piper would survive this quest and stay together forever. She decided not to ask him. She didnât want to jinx that wish, and she definitely didnât want to find out that heâd wished for something different.Â
Me @ Jason: This your girl? Come get her. Because Imma hurt her feelings. What do you mean you want him to wish to stay together forever? He should wish for Gaea to you know die so everyone can be safe. If I ever met Piper in person, Iâd fight her. ON SIGHT.Â
In a related note, Iâve got nothing to say about Jason. He was fine. He passed out alot during this book, didnât do much for how hyped his powers are supposed to be. I will say when he and Percy were possessed and they fought each other, Percy totally won that fight. He knocked Jason the hell out and was about to end his whole career until Piper got Blackjack to knock him out. But overall, I think Jasonâs rather bland and him and Piper have NO chemistry. But I donât think he deserves insecure Piper as a girlfriend. Sheâs a whole ass child of Aphrodite and sheâs worried about her relationship...let me move on.
My main issue with the book lies in the structure and plot. The previous two books had 3 narrators and each set of trio had a specific prophecy assigned to them-i.e: Percy, Hazel and Frank had to free death, retrieve the eagle. The prophecies are a catalyst to get them to go on the quest. And then obviously, we have the overarching prophecy of the seven that will come to fruition in small chunks until the last book of the series. Thatâs fine. So the issue with MoA is that now Rick is handling seven characters + Coach Hedge (like why was he necessary??). He has 4 POVs which threw me the hell off bc we had 3 in the previous two books and honestly, I think we couldâve gone without one of them (Percyâs actually). As a writer, itâs hard to balance multiple characters in the same setting constantly. If they have a conversation, one or two of them will have less lines because other characters have already said them. Therefore to give everyone adequate âscreen timeâ, Rick had to separate them by keeping groups of three or two on their own side quest. As a result, however, reading the book felt like I was being brake checked constantly. Ex-We follow Percy, Frank, and Hedge to an Aquarium then we follow Annabeth, Hazel, and Piper to meet Aphrodite, then they encounter the Romans, then Piper and Jason meet Hercules and get the horn and so on. Like theyâre constantly shifting and doing stuff but not going as a group so it feels like Iâm constantly trying to catch up. Thereâs too many pit stops for my liking. And I deadass have no idea what most of it had to with the MoA prophecy.Â
This disjointed-ness is what makes me rate it lower than tLH. Because while I didnât like Piper or Jason in that book, it was still cohesive. There was a plot and it was followed. Another reason I might feel this way toward MoA is because Rick has a formula and itâs starting to be predictable. Think about the original Greek myths-thereâs one main demigod like Hercules, thereâs a quest, thereâs godly interference so it makes sense the the PJO/HoO characters have the same thing. But all this talking to gods (esp gods weâve already met like Aphrodite) is taking up so much space and slowing the plot. It also didnât help that the minor villians in this book are all unlikeable?? All they did was talk. Otis and Ephialtes. Porchy and Keto. Arachane. All they did was talk. Hereâs how to defeat a PJO/HoO villain: con them to help you/let you go or fight them. Thatâs it.Â
This book is where I started to really regret reading the series. Like I was just over it. The plot was somehow slow and all over the place at the same time. The last couple of chapters were good because I was like finally, something relevant to the prophecy is happening.Â
Let me leave you guys with some positives about this book though:
1. Annabethâs POV. What a gal. When she faces Arachane, Annabeth mentions that she doesnât have an active power like the other Seven but she has her intelligence. And Iâm like yes girl, you are brave and everything I want to be. I would read the PJO series from her POV over this series.
2. Percabeth. They kept promising to come back to each other and my heart melted. Percy was so worried about letting her go follow the Mark but he knew itâs what she had to do and he let her go. And ugh, them falling got me all over again. And like just their chemistry is off the charts. Piper and Jason could never.Â
3. Percyâs comments about Luke. Percy realizes that heâs around Lukeâs age when Luke went all âGods are bad, their children are pawnsâ and like I get chills from reading that passage because you can tell Percyâs tired. He canât have a life because of these quests, heâs constantly moments away from dying. He never really got a chance to be a teenager. And I get he wants to help people and keep the world from being taken over by bad guys but heâs also human. Heâs seen demigods die...heâs traumatized. Like Percy, I really understand Luke better now (right idea, wrong execution) and l see how tired Percy is.Â
4. The Leo/Hazel/Frank disaster of a love triangle. Like Iâve mentioned before, I want Hazel, a THIRTEEN YEAR OLD child, to be left the hell alone when it comes to romance. But because Uncle Rick insists on pairing up everyone, I have to oblige. So here I am. The amount of times I cackled at Frank and Leoâs digs at each other is astronomical. Like shots were fired, no one held back. I was like is this even MG/lower end of YA anymore with all this salt?? Over the years Iâve been spoiled about the series so I know that Leo somehow ends up with Calypso so I know nothing will come out of the love triangle (and it seems to be wrapping up bc Leo and Frank complimented each otherâs abilities toward the end there) but passive aggressive-ness was peak.Â
5. Every single conversation between Reyna and Annabeth. Like two powerhouses talking about wanting to save their camps and the world. I loved it. Hands down. I hope they can be friends when this is all over.Â
6. And lastly, the reunion of Percabeth. The Judo flip. The fact that Percy talked about having a future with her.Â
Thanks for reading if you made it down here and Iâll see you guys in a couple of days with my House of Hades update. This book and the one after it Iâm reading for the first time ever so Iâm going in semi blind (like I said, I know some spoilers). Iâm currently on chapter 2 or 3 of that and ermm, it was a weak intro but Iâll keep going :) rooting for Percabeth to make it through.Â

( luke hemmings, twenty-two, cismale, he/him ) did you see BYRON CONELLY walking down main street earlier? Â you know who iâm talking about, theyâre a DECKHAND. Â everybody in town says that theyâre SANGUINE & NONJUDGEMENTAL, but have a tendency to be IMPRESSIONABLE & VOLATILE too. Â BYRON has been in town for ONE AND A BIT years. c'mon, theyâre always requesting SWEET CAROLINE by NEIL DIAMOND at karaoke nights. Â well, iâm sure youâll see them soon! ( ooc: sunny, 22, she/her, est )
hi thanks for tuning in, SUNNY here to tell you all a lil bit about westmereâs very own new nd improved favorite loser below. sorry for this summary being all over the place, itâs kinda how my brain works heh which is kinda perfect bc byron will for SURE be all over the place too ( u can rly tell at a certain point i was like ok i give up + iâm posting mf ). let me know if u have any questions about âem and most importantly, lmk if you would like to plot a lil connect or sumn đ
@westmerestartersâÂ
FAMBAM + BACKGROUND
born 14 years after the elder conelly ( wanted brother connect !!! ) entered this word to two parents who didnât seem to read the job description, it was clear that byron wasnât planned. and down the line, heâd soon realize through the tumultuous household he was brought up in - perhaps never even wanted.
byronâs parents had one constant - and that was fighting. over anything, all the time. there just wasnât any love between the two and they stayed together for whatever meaningless reasons until byron hit middle school. ( there mightâve been a super short lull in toxicity once byron was born, but it had to be short as his first memories are nothing shy of toxic. ) it was a messy separation ( they never paid the full legal fees for a full divorce ) - his father moving to the coast of nj & his mother moving to a smaller apartment nearby her own mother ( which, due to the negative relationship among his mother + grandmother, also called for more tension ). heâd often be dropped off @ his grandmotherâs house for baby-sitting or when he was â becoming too much to handle. â eventually his grandmother moved into his cousinâs house ( MONROE ) and although grateful he made a practically new brother, similar tendencies of feeling unwanted occurred when byron noticed their grandmother praising and coddling and favoriting monroe just a bit more.
( his mother was a struggling addict ( and had been her whole life ), but the loneliness, newfound pressures and whatever excuse she was able to name caused her drinking to spiral worse than byron remembered ( even at his young age ) before. )
( his father was rarely in his life, but when he was, he was THE coolest. always played good cop in any situation regarding his mother, despite choosing not to have an active role in byronâs life. byron looked up to him like no other. when he WAS around, he taught byron how to surf, skateboard, play sports, theyâd play video games, theyâd eat junk food - honestly anything that byron wanted to do. his dad was an adrenaline junkie and created the stepping stones for byron to be one too. he was a marine biologist & pretty successful at that. passionate, intelligent, but seemingly finding his newfound life a lot better than his previous - which is why he never wanted byron to stay too long, the boy reminded him of her, of the past. )
( his older brother moved out of the house when byron was just a lil kid, theyâre not very close and donât have much in common ... or so it seems. he lives in nyc and they only talk here and there on holidays. he was never a huge part of his life, but it does bum him out to think what couldâve been / could be. )
TO GET THE GISTÂ
due to never receiving the attention he craved from his family members, he made up for it tenfold in school. he was always talking to everyone, loud, boisterous, gregarious, life of the party; he wanted people to like him and they did. he become a total people pleaser, molding himself to make sure everyone was content and stayed around. impressionable, adaptable. he felt less this way towards adults and had a bit of a rebellious phase, hanging with the wrong crowd & getting into things he probably wouldnât do otherwise. old habits die hard and he still tries his best to make everyone crack a smile, to remember him - since he believes he wonât be remembered for much else.
after he just barely skated by in high school ( his grades were never as good as his cousinâs and never lived up to his fatherâs expectations ), byron felt a bit lost. a lot of people had plans, were heading off to college - but already under the assumption he couldnât reach any expectation in that realm ( a lil self fulfilling prophecy am i right pals ), he stayed in town - caring for his mother who hardly had anything together, his uncle who got sick very quickly & passed, spending time with his grandmother, while he himself fell into a rut. most of his days meant he drove out towards his dadâs place ( dad hardly there now, out and about with his new family ), surfing, smoking, and grabbing some cash doing odd jobs any way he could. he lost any purpose he once had ( but yall would never know it bc who wants to be in someoneâs life whoâs a buzzkill ? all smiles, baby, all smiles. )
IN WESTMERE
when his cousin offered the opportunity to travel cross-country in his van, byron had nothing to lose. always adventurous in spirit, he immediately said yes - deciding to ignore that âobligation,â that feeling to make sure they were a-ok that he felt towards his parents. he needed an out and this was it.Â
after landing in the small connecticut town for the night, the two fell for it - especially since when they got there along the water, it was a summer night + everything landed into place. they decided to stay there a bit longer ... and that eventually turned into more than a year. still antsy to keep traveling and to move around, byron has been ready to head out ... but stays for a few reasons - and them all being people ( bc lbh the surf is not even on point here ok )
his current job is a deckhand ( on a bunch of boats, ppl prob hired him as word of mouth got around that he knew what he was doing ). prob got that knowledge from being by his dadâs on the water when younger ( heâs ... obsessed with the water ) ! and also heâs just a quick learner ok ( ps: if your charrie has a boat pls letâs make somethin happen )
TO KNOW [ headcanons + more ]
his fav karaoke song is sweet caroline bc he knows everyone will be able to sing nd party along. he does it for the ppl, ppl.
he never saw too many baby / kid pics of himself which was kind of a bummer bc he really only remembers negative times - somehow they overpowered ( i bet lil byron was cute as fuck too fml )
heâs super into drugs, hallucinogenics, honestly you name it. it started off w/ him being impressionable, then bored, and now he just enjoys it. despite his motherâs addiction running through his blood, he still continues to do his thang. Â
longboards around town so watch your toes
uses đ€đ€ all the time and not ironicallyÂ
has an existential crisis on the daily about purpose but keeps that to himself most timesÂ
WANTED CONNECTIONS
someone pls give me a sugar mama idc how we plot it out they donât have to hook up they can idk idc i just want someone giving him money or expensive things it can be so much fun ok ,, pool boy ? idk sign me up
pls if your muse has a boat, let him be the deckhand ok it will also be so fun and potentially angsty if he fucks something up
a fling 100% - even multiple ? idc listen he is currently sharing a tiny VAN with his COUSIN he needs a place - like an actual bed - to crash on at night
can he save someone who was potentially drowning pls??? he used to be a lifeguard, it can be a cool/fun thread to write out
omg off of that can he teach someone how to swimÂ
look if anyone is into marine bio, can they somehow know byronâs father ?? i feel like that could make room for a cool plot
also i have an older brother connect on the w/câs page lmk lmk
give me a good influence that will somehow have him open up + tell him that itâs weird to be so sunshiny all the time. maybe someone who witnesses him at his worst + stays, ya know ??
a bad influence plot where y/c takes this impressionable young lad and puts him through the ringer tbh ( srrsly heâd do a lot for ppl, so ask him to do something illegal for them itâll be fun )
party pals, smoking pals, on the water 24/7 pals,Â
co-worker, other ppl that work on the water ( fishermen?? more deckhands?? captains??)
gimmie someone he accidentally bumped into while longboarding ( heâs a large human it mightâve done damage ok )
i want and need enemies ok i know heâs chill as fuck and wants everyone to like him but thereâs always a way to find enemies >:o. anything angsty for REAL.
unrequited thing? where he led someone on?? iâm sure he does this constantly
donât ruin the friendship thing omg plsssss always so fun
look iâm open for it ALL. every plot u have in mind so lay it on me

Youâre right about the kid Dimitri thing itâs a cute element of the movie that adds to their relationship and also dimitris search bc heâs looking for the girl he saved. See I have an attachment to Rasputin&the bat which is half my issue but youâre right about the new guy just. Not being dangerous enough for it to work in the musical. Also pls go off about Newsies I wanna hear about that one
okay this is going under a read more because it inevitably will get very very long.  also spoilers for newsies (1992 movie and musical) below:
first of all a disclaimer: I do like the musical and this isnât me saying that they didnât improve anything (Crutchy/Crutchie, actually developing their token female (although I do have thoughts about that as well), what they did with âOnce and for Allâ etc.) but I was a fan of the 1992 movie first so my loyalties lie there.  Also this is all just my opinion
First and foremost: all characters except for Jack, Medda, Crutchie, and Pultizer were done dirty. Â The background characters were my favorite part of the movie and the musical really dropped the ball with them, often at the sacrifice of historical accuracy
Mush Meyers, Boots, Kid Blink, Racetrack Higgins, and Spot Conlon were all real people actually involved in the strike (Kid Blink was historically the leader, they created Jack Kelly to have more freedom with characterization), and all of these characters were taken out of the musical or given lesser roles.  They also (along with Crutchy) create the supporting cast (with Jack, Denton, David, and Les being the main cast), which means I was emotionally attached to all of these people and then they were taken away from me :( Itâs clear that the people adapting the musical did not think they were important enough to keep consistent, which is just false
In general, because they spend so much time focusing on Jack and Katherine, all of the background newsies are less developed, which means that the Found Family vibes are also slightly less developed (especially when taking away the lodging house/newsies square as a definitive home base and Kloppman as a father/grandfather figure)
seriously I miss Kloppman that dude woke them up every morning, helped them with their spelling, lied to Snyderâs face about Jackâs whereabouts... MVP right there
Racetrack and Spot were done the most dirty (because the others donât even exist).  Allow me to explain: In the movie and in real life, Racetrack got his name because he sells at Sheepshead Races and bets on the horses there (the betting is more of a reoccurring thing in the movie).  Therefore, in âKing of New York,â he is the character to wish for âa permanent spot at Sheepshead Races,â and for absolutely no reason (besides laziness) they have someone else say that in the musical and also cut half his name??? He also is shown to be very good with kids (David telling him to watch Les when he goes after Jack, all of his interactions with Snipeshooter), and thereâs an interesting thing to be said about how Wiesel will spot him papers.  All of this is lost simply because they donât have the stage time for the background newsies
SPOT CONLON! WAS RUINED! perhaps thatâs a very strong opinion but they really did him dirty. Â In the movie heâs a shrimp with the aura of a mob boss. Â he wasnât buff, and that made him more intimidating because he still somehow was arguably the most powerful newsie! also by cutting out the scene where Jack, David, and Boots go to Brooklyn to see him, we miss seeing him as a true leader and getting an actual introduction to him and how the newsies of different boroughs interact. Â I miss his slingshot and his pimp cane. Â I miss David calling him the key to the strike. Â I miss him showing up earlier than the second act so it actually makes sense for him to be seen as the strike leader that the musical is so desperate to make him (seriously whatâs the point of him being in Pulitzerâs office at the end???). also by introducing him later we miss all of the sprace moments :(
I even have some beef with Katherine because, although sheâs much more developed as a love interest than Sarah (rip Sarah 1992 maybe if they had actually kept her song Truth About the Moon in there...), I think it was cheap and unnecessary to make her Pulitzerâs daughter, and she doesnât really have much of a personality outside of Strong Independent Woman who still somehow needs a man in order to get her big break.  She was really written as a Token Female and while I love her and I appreciate that she wants agency and to fight for a cause, Sarah punching a Delancey brother was more feminist.  Also, even Davidâs role in the story was lessened in order to give room for Katherineâs whole subplot and Dramatic Family Reveal and as an avid Javid shipper that made me sad :(
Now on to more plot-focused concerns!
The! Betrayal! Scene! The movie betrayal scene! So much better! Allow me to explain!
First of all, Jack just waltzing into Pulitzerâs office and getting captured? boring. cheap. Â Snyder and the police infiltrating the rally so we get to see Every Single Newsie try so desperately to keep Jack safe and yet he (and all the named newsies) still get captured? Heartbreaking! Engaging! Shows plainly the bond of the newsies!
(also allowed us to have the âon the grounds of Brooklyn, your honorâ line at the trial)
The one-on-one confrontation between Jack and Pulitzer is much more engaging and more of a game of wits in my opinion. Â You donât feel like Jack is the underdog and wonât win until Pulitzer directly threatens David, whereas having all of Pulitzerâs friends there in the musical means Jack is automatically going to lose and you donât even get a chance to cheer for him
The Alley Scene!!!!
Then the actual betrayal scene, with Jack fully dressed like a scab.  every single newsie feeling personally hurt and calling out to Jack, spot having to be forcibly pulled back by multiple people, and then David gets the chance to speak and nearly starts a fist fight when he was the one who always said they couldnât beat up the scabs⊠âI ainât got nobody tucking me in at night, like you.  Itâs just me, and I gotta look out for myselfâ âyou had the newsies!â
I quote that scene so much yâall
I miss Jack meeting Davidâs whole family. Â It really shows what Jack himself is missing and longing for, it more blatantly shows Davidâs Jewishness, and makes Jack finding a family with David and the newsies that much sweeter at the end. Â I also liked how a nuclear family was something no movie newsies had (less historically accurate, I know) because I think that bonded them together more, because they genuinely only had each other in the movie (can you tell that found family is extremely important to me)
Jackâs background story. Â him lying about his name and then it all getting revealed at the trial was a very spicy moment, and I think it shows just how much he relied on Santa Fe as an escape for him. Â Heâs created an entire other life in his imagination for himself, going so far as to change his name and fantasize about having a family, and I think that that makes his decision to stay in New York and accept both his reality and the newsies as his family sweeter
also in the musical itâs implied that Jack stole food and clothing for the kids in the refuge, and thatâs how he got himself arrested the first time. Â I almost like it better if he was stealing for himself at first, because I like having a protagonist who doesnât need to always be completely altruistic like he was starving and he stole some food and I think thatâs justified, so I donât like how they felt the need to turn him into some sort of saint who was stealing for someone else (thatâs a really nitpicky thing but!)
The absolutely bonkers commitment to nicknames in the movie was very spicy. Â I think Jake (and Jack, who was lying, and David and Les, who started as outsiders) was the only one with a name and he was even a very deep background newsie. Â Wasnât historically accurate but it sure created a lot of possibilities about the power of names that could be exploited in fanfiction
And now some nitpicky things about elements of a musical that bothered me:
they took away the upper harmonies in carrying the banner???? why would you do that you have Broadway singers and you take away the upper harmony???
switching Jackâs line of âI want space not just airâ to âI need space and fresh airâ idk I think the first one more fully portrays how trapped he feels in New York and in his situation also itâs more poetic
Iâve already talked about Raceâs line in King of New York :)
how all of the newsies are supposed to be kids but instead were played by adults... I know this was because of child labor laws but thatâs why newsies is going to be best done as a high school musical (or a combined middle school/high school like my school was... Mr. Holsen when you retire put in a good word for me so I can take over).  if you donât have at least 3 newsies who are small and young enough to be lifted onto another newsieâs shoulders then youâre doing it wrong
this is very much a personal preference but I really liked how the color pallet in the movie was a lot of browns and earth tones. Â with the musical doing a lot of steel and blues it definitely feels like the progression into the mechanical age but it also feels colder and more rigid and I liked the warmth of the movie.
In a similar vein that is also a very personal preference, I liked how the singing and dancing was a bit rougher around the edges in the movie. Â Iâm a dancer so Of Course I love the Broadway choreo but it feels too polished sometimes. Â these are young scrappy kids and theyâre dancing like professionals who went to julliard (which like. some of them probably did). the scruffiness of the movie makes it feel more down to earth and swallowable for me
Jackâs cowboy hat :( Jackâs costume in general :( his nickname is cowboy and they took away his cowboy hat and red bandana :(
This is obnoxiously long but I just. yâall I have so many feelings about newsies and everyone always talks about the musical when theyâre really two different stories and I just want to talk about the movie so thank you for indulging me

this is a very ⊠unexpected fc change notice !!
iâve been struggling for about ⊠a year ? trying to revitalize this muse ? not that iâve lost any love for yccjungrk â actually, thatâs why iâm trying this out to see if it makes much of a difference. sheâs a muse that i hold very close to my heart, and that i couldnât fathom abandoning ⊠so here we are, trying something different ! if you know me well or follow me on twitter, you probably know i was considering this fc change about ? i think a year ago ? and i think itâs finally time to give it a try. new year, new muse, i guess ? so, two years after her acceptance weâve finally moved from weki mekiâs choi yoojung to dreamcatcherâs lee gahyeon !! nothing more than her face ( obviously ), birthdate ( now february 3, sheâs an aquarius now ! ), and her hometown ( busan ! ) has changed !! it shouldnât affect her muse much, slight personality tweaks, although not so much due to the fc change versus a small revamp of her â but that will be explained below. itâs not even really a revamp.
but anyway â gahyeonâs among very few fcs i could see representing this muse, and i knew that if i ever did change yccjungrkâs fc, it would be to gahyeon. so here we are !! weâre starting this museâs third year here at rookies, as well as 2020, with a path to whatâs hopefully a happier, healthier, and more active muse. so, below are some ramblings trying to figure things out, as well as plots ( !! ) and some new information about royalâs lovely lupine, lee gahyeon !! please welcome her with open arms.
hereâs to new beginnings â„
things have been a little ? tough for this muse recently. so hereâs going back to the beginnings â because honestly, her muse wasnât very established when i started out here at rookies. instead, i started with a generic muse who felt a little lost, a little betrayed, and didnât know what she wanted to do upon coming to rookies. as i established her as a muse here, the following developed ::
her mother died when she was young, and is the reason she started dancing
her father shut down after her motherâs death, blaming himself for what happened
she tried to reconcile and cope with what happened, but she was young and her father, who was her only real support system at the time, wasnât responding well either ⊠so, she had to grow up very quickly and take care of herself
she worked at a dance studio throughout high school that sheâd attended as a student in middle school
she participated in a dance crew while in high school
she excelled in school because she wanted her father to notice her â but he never did because he paid little attention to anything
she managed to get into snu on a full-ride scholarship bc of her grades, and moved to seoul to attend as a linguistics major to go into a â practical â career where she could make money, but she ⊠really hated it
the only thing that got her through it was that she worked as a choreographer at a dance studio, image, in seoul; that dance studio was basically her life, if she wasnât at the snu library, she was there
finally alone, she thought about actually pursuing her dreams and doing what she wanted for once in her life
with the help of kim doyeon, she applied for the mgas
sheâs still confused as to how she managed to get a contract, and that royal entertainment of all companies wanted her
she was excited, but stressed, in the beginning â now sheâs mostly just stressed
her life doesnât have much direction now
of course the direction sheâs currently pointed is toward debut â and donât get me wrong, she wants to debut !! but with the boyâs recent debuts gahyeon canât help but look at them and feel a little helpless. because of course itâs a good sign â it means itâs possible to debut !! but it also means that she likely wonât debut anytime soon. she does love being a trainee and realizes how lucky she is to even have gotten this chance, much more with royal â but that doesnât mean she hasnât gotten a little ⊠well, lost ( *cue lost in the woods from frozen 2* ). she doesnât know what to do because sure, she has what she wanted â sheâs a trainee now !! sheâs so grateful !! but sheâs also, well ⊠a trainee now. her path is uncertain from here on out. sheâs aware that royal wouldnât debut a girl group for a while.
so ⊠what to do now ?
the simple thing is to throw her to the wringer. get her sick, have her father come back to haunt her, injure her, something simple. easy stuff. but not really likely ? gahyeonâs careful and knows her limits ( even if she tends to overwork herself anyway, but at least she usually realizes when too much is too much ), so she wouldnât allow herself to get injured nor is she likely to get sick, and the olâ mun in the back has plans for gahyeonâs father ⊠so that doesnât leave a whole lot. the lovely mod carly mentioned writing out goals, so ⊠what are those atm ?
debut, with the royal girls preferably
get lee dongmin to kiss her ( yes jess, she wonât shut up about it )
keep in better contact with her idol & non-trainee friends
create new choreography
go back to university
create a life outside of royal
admittedly, itâs not much. itâs hard to ⊠muddle through the fog thatâs surrounded her muse, because she feels stuck. she feels as though sheâs not making any real progress, and like everything involving trainee-dom is monotonous. she doesnât like doing the same thing week after work, and januaryâs evaluation is the first one sheâs actually been pretty excited about. she doesnât know how to fix that issue ⊠doesnât know where to go, who to talk to â but ⊠she has friends.
life outside of royal hasnât really ⊠existed much for gahyeon since signing. she talks with friends outside of royal primarily through text, and she meets with her friends at events around the city when she has time, but ? that canât be her life. thatâs really why everythingâs so boring. her life is work, eat, sleep, repeat. she doesnât do much outside of her trainee schedule ( not that royal gives her much time ), but all work and no play makes johnny a dull boy, and all that.
with the fc change, gahyeon isnât much different. actually, most of her personality changes have already been put in place via her becoming a trainee, and being more confident in herself and her skills. she still has severe insecurities about herself and her talent that she masks with a convincing enough façade â but maybe we can break that ? her birthdate change makes her an aquarius now ( which, iâm sorry aquarius friends, made me literally groan irl bc iâve met very few aquariusâ i like rip ). so, itâs almost as if the personality she was gaining fits her a little bit more now â just ⊠more insecure than maybe she should be. with her time as a trainee, gahyeon has become more independent, and is more likely to speak up for herself. it doesnât help the fact that sheâs a little, well, over-emotional. not that she wasnât before â itâs only amplified by the fact sheâs a little more forward than perhaps she was before becoming a trainee. she tends to take on a mentor/motherly role to anyone younger than her, or anyone who has any struggles and asks her for help. she puts other people before herself and is almost altruistic to a fault. she prioritizes other people and their progress over her own, but she usually makes up for it by working herself ragged. but thatâs always how her life has been â she took care of her father, so she takes care of everyone around her. itâs always been about them â never her.
iâve also noticed something: gahyeon needs connections.
i have this problem where she has relationships/friendships with people, but she never really ? interacts with them ? i donât know why, probably because iâm quite terrible at plotting and have run dry on ideas â but you know ! we need to change that. she only has maybe ? 2-3 solid, deep connections ? but we always need more.
anyone who may have met gahyeon back in her dance crew days !! this wouldâve been around 2015-17 ? she also wouldâve travelled a bit for it, so if you were perhaps part of one, yâall would probably have met at competitions !
sheâs now from busan instead of changwon â so maybe i could get more past connections for her ? maybe people she knew in hs or who went to the dance studio she was a junior choreographer at ?
people who used to take glasses from gahyeon and want to reconnect
people who went to snu with gahyeon and either knew she auditioned for mgas/were confused when she dropped bc they never knew and want to know what happened
youâve seen her videos online/saw her on the mgas, so you approach her !! maybe youâre also a youtuber, and you want to collab on something !! sheâs super open, and youtube challenges seem dumb and fun sheâll do it
you need a roommate, and gahyeonâs apartment is big enough for two people â after some talks with the super, theyâre letting her get a roommate, and honestly gahyeonâs super thankful, sheâs very lonely and hates living alone
you live in gahyeonâs building and her dog always at some point in the night ends up yipping â you realize that itâs when gahyeon comes home and decide to confront her about it. sheâs a child and scared when you confront her, maybe she cries â but sheâs exhausted and you notice and well now youâre friends
maybe we need a burnt out trainee support group bc gahyeon wants to lay on the floor and sleep all the time and thatâs just not healthy
speaking of which, you find her on the practice room floor one night because she fell asleep before she could manage to leave ⊠and maybe you reprimand her because she really shouldnât be doing that
someone she opens up to about her struggles â especially about her feeling inadequate. a connection where gahyeon hadnât realized there would be one.
you two were close before gahyeon became a trainee and she apologizes profusely for dropping off the face of the planet when she got signed but youâre here now so letâs go get some korean bbq and iâll pay for the drinks, okay !!!
literally anyone who will do bts cyphers with gahyeon ( preferably trainees, but if non-trainees would want this plot uh !! she has a youtube channel !! whatâs stopping her ?? catch gahyeon snatching j-hopeâs lines thank you very much
gahyeon likes to cook letâs have a party or smthing sometime soon and like. she can just cook for everyone. idk. let gahyeon cook more 2k20
not to mention, sheâs open for ... literally anything. please, if youâre interested in anything, hit me up, either here or on twitter ( @/arkendrai ). i want and need more plots, and i want gahyeon to last a long time here. if weâve already plotted and you want to snatch something up ! let me know ! if we havenât ! let me know !! we can get ... literally anything started, please
i love you all, and i hope this is a better year for us all

February 26th-March 3rd, 2020 Reader Favorites Archive
The archive for the Reader Favorites chat that occurred from February 26th, 2020 to March 3rd, 2020. Â The chat focused on the following question:
What generally makes the pacing of a comic too fast or too slow for you?
chalcara [Nyx+Nyssa]
My favourite comic style are those large sized, panel and dialogue heavy European comic books, line Blacksad and Asterix. Since every 80 page book tells a complete story, every page is progressing the plot significantly, and the whole thing is pretty compressed and the rate splash page has an impact you donât get in a more lose, decompressed comic. I love that kind of stuff and I look for similiar pacing in webcomics - heavier on the dialogue but without choking the art, low on wordless scenes (they tend to make me skim), taut and tight story-telling, every page asks and answers a question. I know itâs a matter of taste and got told more than once that I am too dumb for comics because I donât have the patience to read through six pages of wordless, plotless mood-setting; but eh - that kind of stuff just doesnât work for me. I firmly believe comicâs big enough a field that mood pieces and tightly plotted stuff can happily co-exist and find their own readership. Iâm just gonna be in the âplot, all the time!â corner.
sagaholmgaard
The a comic starts focusing on minor characters that don't hold much importance for the plot I'll find it to be wayy too drawn out. While One-Punch Man is one of my favorite comics, some fights are pretty unimportant for the overarching plot, focusing only on random small-fry heroes fighting random small-fry monsters and it's just... a million action panels for be too read through while waiting for the main cast to return (this turned out to be pretty specific, oops!)
AshđŠ
Honestly, coming from a writing/literature background, I feel that most comics are too fast-paced for me;; I love the slow build up, it makes everything much more rewarding at the end, and the mood-setting that just lets you breathe and stare at the page, yes, a thousand times yes. I guess this is why I donât like reading or writing actions scenes... so fast-paced and they feel more like âthis is action for interesting action and the hero needs exp and not because itâs a necessary battleâ ;; but this is more of a personal preference than anything, and... yeah, I definitely blame the books I used to read xD
Capitania do Azar
I'm a little confused with the filler concept introduced here, given that most webcomics are made by individuals (not teams)... What would they even be filling for? I think it's fair to talk about less interesting b-plots or when the scenes are focused on characters we don't like as much, but I would hardly call anything a single artist decided it was worth enough to spend hours drawing by their volition "filler"
As for the pacing question, it is sometimes hard to combine the two facets of webcomics: that they're published on a page-to-page basis but they are often read in bulk, when digging through archives. I don't know if it's possible to find the perfect balance between these two, which makes it possible to think that certain scenes are too slow (oh no, we've been at this wedding for three months now!) but when read in the archive are suddenly too fast... I think breathing room is necessary every now and then, even for faster-paced comics.
RebelVampire
I think you need to consider that just because an artist doesn't see something as filler, doesn't mean readers won't. I've known a lot of comics where the creator created a scene that they loved, but in the bigger scheme of things it served absolutely no purpose to the plot and felt super out of place
So while the filler wasn't intentional as a "I need filler", to the readers it comes off as filler
FeatherNotes(Krispy)
I like long paced, slow- burn type stories where there is an obvious carefully crafted plot with each stitch placed intentionally for a bigger reveal and payoff. Much how i like any relationship shown in stories, i love it when an author almost makes readers work for that payoff. It makes the re-read value go way up, and to catch on to the subtle nuances of plot reveal on the second or third go at the story is very rewarding both as a writer and reader!
chalcara [Nyx+Nyssa]
You can easily have slow burn relationships in a faster paced comic. I actually like that better, because that usually requires the characters to have actions and interests outside of the relationship of interest, which leads to more well rounded characters.
A good example is the novel Clockwork Boys and itâs follow up - slowburn romance, and while the characters figured THAT one out, they solved a huge mystery.
renieplayerone
Im a big fan of stories that are able to turn the pacing up to 11 on a dime without it getting old or lowering the stakes at all. It takes such talent to be able to tell compelling stories with high flying action at the same time, so I appreciate anyone that can manage that balance
chalcara [Nyx+Nyssa]
My personal approach to writing pacing is that each page has to do at least two of three: further the plot, introduce/deepen story-relevant world building, deepen the characterisation. I aim for all three at once; if thereâs only two, there better be a good reason to keep that scene around, if thereâs only one, it gets cut and/or merged with another one. Eg. I have a scene where the character cook (foodâs relevant because thereâs a famine) and a scene where they argue about their plans, those can easily be combined.
Some scenes are still slower or faster than others, but they all matter to the story.
FeatherNotes(Krispy)
Def agree with Renie on that point too!
AshđŠ
Chalcara makes a good point too, and itâs something I definitely try to keep in mind in my own pages. I try to answer a question and ask another with my pages and pull as much double duty as I can wrench out of it. Now, whether I succeed every time? Absolutely not. But this is a good reminder when Iâm going back to edit issue 3- keep the push and pull of questions and answers in mind.
RebelVampire
Ok so at this point I do want to jump in and remind people that as per Rule #1, this chat should mostly be about your experiences as a reader vs. your experiences as a creator. So just want to make sure the convo doesn't delve too far into that realm.
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
My answer to this question is very much based on specific situations in comics. Pacing is SUCH a complex thing, and it's not always easy to see the impact in the grand scheme of things. To make a story seem too slow to me, a few things have to happen: the pages/ panels don't further the plot, don't deepen the characters/world-building, or the tension remains consistent for too long. Coming from a theatre background, I sometimes like to refer to this idea as beats. I focus a lot on the importance of every line having purpose. If a character says something, and it doesn't add anything to the experience, then perhaps the dialogue shouldn't be there at all. Or if a panel without dialogue doesn't add anything to the reader experience, the same thing applies. There should be no wasted space. Honestly, I am kind of a sucker for slow build-up (as long as there is actually build-up at all). So I'm not against slow-burn stories. To me, slow-burn shouldn't feel like it's dragging along, or like "nothing is happening," which is a common trap stories fall into. But we as readers need to see those slow moments in order to understand the fast moments too. Which brings me onto pacing that is too fast... Honestly, this is a much bigger problem to me personally. There is this influx in fiction of wanting to have the quickest jump into the action at the beginning of the story, and it always makes me want to stop reading. If the writer doesn't want to have ANY exposition at all or introduce the characters in any meaningful way, how am I as a reader going to give a shit about the characters? That's pretty much an instant story-killer to me. I don't mind if characters are introduced as we go, but completely glossing over them in favor of the biggest explosions never keeps my attention. All in all, I read comics (and fiction in general) for the human experience (which doesn't mean that your characters must be human, lol, fantasy and sci-fi writers).
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
@chalcara [Nyx+Nyssa] Thank you for mentioning that comics are big enough to accommodate all kinds of tastes. What I find to be too fast might be just right or even too slow for another person, and honestly, it's all valid.
FeatheryJustice
I like a coherent story. It doesn't matter if it is slow paced because I get to absorb the information. I don't mind if it is fast paced as long as I can understand it. If the story itself doesn't make sense because you want a slow paced story with weird inserts in the middle, you have lost me. If your story is too fast to the point of skipping scenes and details you lost me.
spacerocketbunny
I love slow building stories with larger payoff. Making sure that characters are fleshed out and given the chance to breathe while still facilitating the plot is a tricky thing to pull off but I've definitely seen it happen in comics like Shaderunners, TINF and Tiger Tiger for example. Shaderunners does an incredible job of showing a multifaceted inner conflict with characters while never missing a beat with super fun and high stake heists. TINF is one of my favourite romance stories that carefully builds up and constructs the characters and their feelings for each other while still maintaining that significant information on every page. Tiger Tiger is a slower paced story but keeps me on the edge of my seat every update. Petra utilizes space beautifully and I never feel like there's a need for condensing on pages. I boost these comics a lot but I personally find that pacing is a huge factor in my enjoyment for a comic, and I love these ones so much bc they suit my preference quite well!
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
There was a Korean professional webcomic (on Naver, though I don't think it ever got officially brought over to Webtoons) that I read, that had this interesting situation: seemingly fast pacing, very high tension, yet slow. It was a thriller that pitted a serial killer against the surviving wife of his latest victim. Once she got an inkling who the killer was, the tension skyrocketed, and it was a big game of chase. Problem was the chase part. It LOOKED fast paced if you just looked at like, one chapter of it. But they kept repeating the same scenario, just flavored differently. It was a rinse-and-repeat of this: "the wife found a new evidence; now everyone will believe her!" "oh no, the killer is about to catch her!" "the new evidence is lost" "wife finds another new evidence" etc. (It's been a while and my memory may not be accurate, but the idea is there) Nothing really changed throughout the repeated cycles. So yeah, repetition can be a problem.
Capitania do Azar
Haha, @keiiâii (Heart of Keol) I understand your frustration, but I feel like that kind of story is just aimed at a different audience... It almost feels like watching an episodic Tv show where everything has to come back to the starting point by the end of each episode
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
That is certainly a type with its own audience. Though if that's what they were going for, they probably could've benefitted from a different way of starting the story so readers would've known what they were in for. And there were lots of things that really felt like could have gone somewhere, but never did.
Hmm, I guess that's another thing that could affect how pacing is perceived: loose threads?
RebelVampire
IDK I think there's a difference between something being episodic and something being annoyingly repetitious. For example, Detective Conan is arguably episodic. Each situation in the larger scheme of things is largely the same: Crime happens -> There are red herrings and twists -> Conan solves it. As a mystery comic, it's never gonna deviate from that formula. But if literally every crime had the basic same plot flow, like if the red herrings and twists were the same everytime, then it ceases to be episodic and just becomes bland and repetitive.(edited)
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
OH and speaking of Korean webcomics, I wanna talk about a pacing-related concept that gets brought up a lot in their comment sections: yam vs sprite (they call it "cider" bu they really mean sprite/ 7-up). Baked yam is a common wintertime treat. It fills you up, it's delicious. But it's notorious for making you thirsty. It kind of clogs up & dries up your throat. Whereas sprite is a thirst quencher. So, the idea is you can't eat yams forever. You need sprite to balance it out. Yams are a metaphor for frustrating build-ups. There is a sense that you (and/or the protagonist) are being wronged. e.g. It's a sports comic, and the leader of the opposing team keeps trash talking, even cheats and gets away with it. Sprite is a metaphor for satisfaction. In the same sports comic example, the arrogant, cheating leader finally gets what they deserve. Most stories need its share of yams. But if the yam portion of the story goes on for too long, the comment section will be filled with "where's my sprite!!!" "I feel like I ate 1,000 yams and now REALLY need some sprite" etc.
spacerocketbunny
Ahh that's an interesting concept!
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
There are certainly stories that are big piles of yams by design. But I think when done well, readers who like a lot of sprite can tell what it is, and walk away pretty early on. So those comics attract readers who are into piles of yams.
(Of course, there's always gonna be That One Person who walks into a yam party and loudly demands a 5-gallon bottle of sprite... )
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
In that case, I definitely avoid yams! No matter how much I love a character or cast, I tend to go crazy if we stay in one location too long, or in one slow storyline for too many pages, or if I find myself going "COME ON, DO IT, DO THE THING, WE KNOW YOU'RE GONNA." To me, something new should happen on every page, even if it's a tiny plot progression or a tidbit of character info. I very much appreciate when a story takes time to breathe - and I find it's those quiet, cute, or slightly-unnecessary moments that are most memorable when I think of a comic - but too much of that will make me fidgety. I really need alternating paces to be happy.
kayotics
I think for me, itâs easier for a comic to go too slow than too fast. Iâve definitely seen comics go too fast, but the slow pace is more frustrating for me. What makes a comic slow for me are a few things: too MUCH focus on atmosphere (like multiple hand shots that donât have dialogue), repeated events, too much buildup for an event, and the last thing is technical ability (like speech bubbles that are too large or in vertical scroll comics the panels being way too far apart). Iâm pretty ok with letting things breathe, and I actually love that, but I need something to keep my interest, and those things above donât do it.
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
I don't think yams are about repetition, though it can certainly involve repetition. It could be a new level of frustration on every page, revealing something new about the characters. But those would still be yams.
Deo101 [Millennium]
I'm also of the mind that its way easier for comics to go too slow than too fast. However, I think that its also really easy for a comic to introduce too many things too fast, without giving me the time to get to know anyone (contradictory, I know, hear me out) I think a lot of comics will start in a boring setting, before the initial action. It takes a very long time to ramp up to the ACTUAL story, because they want to get me to a baseline of knowledge before we get to all the action. This is really slow though because essentially nothing is actually happening, plot wise, and I think that the creators know this and so they try to do it all as fast as possible, so by the time we get to the action there are 10 characters and a ton of lore I don't actually know.... So I think there are two kinds of pacing, the actual plot/events of a story, and the introduction of new ideas. For me, the plot/events need to be relatively fast, but the introduction of ideas needs to be slow. I can't start a story with 6 people, it will feel too fast no matter what, and I can't start a story with slow action or it will feel like it's dragging. I don't know if this makes sense or not
kayotics
I think I agree with that pretty wholeheartedly. I want a comic to get me into the action pretty quickly, but introduce new characters and concepts slowly. Give me, like... 3 characters tops to start with.
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
Yeah, too slow AND too fast is definitely a possibility!
kayotics
Fantasy and sci-fi are both genres that can fall into that trap easily, and I think the comics that bring me into the world building best is the ones that donât explain things IMMEDIATELY, but explain things over time as I need to know them
Deo101 [Millennium]
^ yes I feel this too. I think there is also a certain respect for a readers ability to suspend their disbelief that is oftentimes not taken into account... I think that, for the most part just being told something exists is fine, and learning how it works is what needs to take time. But, a lot of stories may try to justify things existing, which feels like overexplaining
kayotics
Itâs like explaining why trees exist. Sometimes they just... do. I donât question why theyâre there
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
Agreed, I think stories set in the real world have the advantage of starting with a bang, without much need for explanation - there's always a need for some explanation upfront in a fantasy/sci-fi setting, even if it's done through visual shorthand. You don't need to overexplain, but you definitely have to explain... more. Or at least make it abundantly clear that A) this is a different world, B) this is the general event that's happening, and C) this is how you should feel about it, even without living in that world.
Deo101 [Millennium]
Yes exactly I feel like I see it most commonly in scifi/fantasy, like you said, where someone wants to explain why their magic exists immediately. This will sound rude but at this point I don't care why it exists, maybe way later you can tell me but I don't care when I'm only just starting .. it feels like reading someone's worldbuilding essay idk
kayotics
Yeah... thatâs definitely a thing that can affect pacing negatively. I donât need a world building essay on how the magic works right away. As long as the logic is consistent in magic Iâll figure it out as a reader. Then you can explain details later and Iâll be into it.
Deo101 [Millennium]
Yeah cause later on it feels like connecting dots, almost like revealing the answer to a mystery
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
Yes yes! I love that sense that as a reader, you're being trusted to learn - not so much that you're being fed information, but that you're given enough to put the pieces together. Even done slowly, it's very satisfying.
chalcara [Nyx+Nyssa]
I like my storys with some unexplained mysteries. I mean, how many people know exactly how the internet works, and yet we use it daily? Dumping down a dissertation on how x works more often than not kills pacing for me.
kayotics
I think it can be done well to keep the pacing going, but it needs to be combined with something. Sometimes you need to provide that info dump so the story keeps working
I canât pinpoint any exact scenes but I seem to remember Gunnerkrigg Court doing that pretty well. Thereâs a lot of unusual concepts in that story that need to be explained, but it usually doesnât feel like a slog
Deo101 [Millennium]
Yeah for sure. I do think it can also be used either in tandem with or as an instigator to moving things forward, if done right. Its not illegal to reveal information about the world
I think people tend to do this kind of thing better with Characters than the world. Because with Characters, we want to get to know them and this comes more naturally, but with worldbuilding... It often feels like worldbuilding should be a baseline knowledge rather than also a storytelling element I guess
snuffysam (Super Galaxy Knights)
One thing that really annoys me with pacing is when a single story beat that should be relatively simple takes way too long in real time. Like in one comic I read, the villains tell the heroes to urgently meet them at some location. And, like, the heroes are talking back and forth, deciding who they should send and such. But, like... it's been six months, and they still haven't left the house yet. I guess the urgency feeling is probably there if you're binging the comic? But, it really doesn't encourage me to follow along with the comic if it's such a slow read. I'm not saying that these sorts of authors need to update faster, but if your update rate is to the point where it takes months to finish an urgent conversation, maybe some things should be cut out? Or they should at least be walking out the door while they're talking? I guess it's just sort of a general "something should happen each page" thing though. Like if the conversation is just going in circles, there's really no need for it, and it can be annoying to follow along when it's seemingly so urgent.
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
I know it's not the same thing, but that reminded me of all the gaming comic strips out there that poke fun at "it's final dungeon time, the stakes are higher than ever, and the player spends the next 80 hours completing the minigames"
sssfrs (JOE IS DEAD)
I have a rule that if any piece of dialogue isn't either directly advancing the plot, giving the reader new information about the characters speaking, or is funny, it should be cut
Definitely agree with what people have said, that big infodumps right off the bat are not enjoyable. I honestly don't ever want the author to sit me down and explain something to me. It's much more interesting to see parts of the worldbuilding in action, or to see things that arent explained and have to theorize about what it is or how it works before the mechanics behind it are shown
Capitania do Azar
I very much second that notion, @sssfrs (JOE IS DEAD) , that's my rule of thumb when I'm writing
Deo101 [Millennium]
I have a similar rule with my pages, but with dialogue I like to have more fluff so we feel like we're spending a bit more time with them
Capitania do Azar
if the info is not something I need the reader to know (and character development is) then what's the point of forcing myself to draw more stuff
but @Deo101 [Millennium] , fluff IS character ;D
Deo101 [Millennium]
Yeah! But it's not always new information is all
You gotta reestablish stuff, let some things marinate, and repeat things for them to really settle in I think, so it can't ALWAYS be new stuff, even if the page as a whole is introducing something new. I mean usually you can do it alongside other stuff but yeah
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
I think sometimes it's the same for the characters. e.g. The same characters can have multiple conversations about the same topic, but their understanding/ feelings toward the topic can change as things marinate.
Deo101 [Millennium]
Yeah for sure
sssfrs (JOE IS DEAD)
Meaningful conversations where you get to know the characterâs personality would fall in the 2nd category
Sometimes its hard to judge whether dialogue will be interesting to someone whoâs unfamiliar with the characters
Shadowmark Productions
Someone once told me that dialogue should reveal character and action reveals plot. If done correctly, both work in tandem to advance the story without exposition. Iâve found that to be very useful.
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
Ooh. True!
mirandalorian
That's a good way to put it. And it seems like that idea is pretty important in comics.
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
I think it's 100% fine if dialogue isn't interesting to people unfamiliar with the characters -- as long as it's compelling to people who have been reading from the beginning?
I live for the kind of scenes where like... character A just smiles... it's an ordinary smile to people who don't know A, but it means the world to people who know the context and the character
sssfrs (JOE IS DEAD)
Action can reveal character too
chalcara [Nyx+Nyssa]
Iâd say itâs even more important, I for starters love characters that say one thing and do another; itâs a good way to show conflict!
(Inner conflict, I mean)
RebelVampire
For me whether I think the pacing is too fast or too slow are actually two different things. In regards to finding the pacing too slow, I generally base this on a character's progress for their goals. While I like to see characters face setbacks and don't expect everything to be solved immediately, I expect some progress to be had. So if I wind up reading a comic and it's basically taking more than 100 pages for any progress to be made in the protagonist's goal and growth, that's just way too slow for my personal tastes. It kind of just ruins my investment in their goal since it doesn't feel like they're actually working on it, and that kind of defeats the point of a goal. In a similar but different vein, pacing is too fast for me if the comic never stops to breathe to exposit or showcase character emotions. Obviously, expositing a whole bunch is bad, and you don't want to take 20 pages to show a character crying. However, these moments where you take a step back and say "Hey look this character is struggling and here is a hint of their backstory" are super important for creating a bond between the reader and the characters. Without them, it just feels like you're sprinting from Plot Point A to Plot Point B. In relation to this, another element that would make it too fast is if characters are getting over things way too fast because plot is to be had. When something emotional happens, such as a character dies, I should still be able to feel those affects much later even if its not at the forefront. Of course, these are clearly just to my personal tastes, which pacing generally is a subjective thing in most cases.
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
For sure that thing about needing space after emotional events
not a webcomic but some of my favorite parts of One Piece are the crew goofing off after ever major arc
I feel like webcomics can fail at this sometimes, because things that feel tediously slow when writing week -by-week can feel fast when read back all at once
