Continuing to watch through the Writer/Director commentary of LotR (with Peter Jackson, Philippa Boyens, and Fran Walsh) and jotting down any new-to-me information I come across. Here's what I gleaned from TTT:

When they got the New Line logo to put on the movies, it was very old and scratched, so PJ gave it to Weta to touch it up. They joked about how they should bill New Line for it XD

Originally, the studio wanted TTT to start off with a prologue too, with Cate Blanchett narrating what sounds like it was basically going to be a "Previously on..." spiel, even though they didn't like the idea of the prologue in the first one. Thankfully, these three ignored the studio's advice both times XD

The Uruk who says "Manflesh" is also the guy in Sauron's armor in the prologue!

In the scene where the Rohirrim find Theodred, it's not actually raining! They used rain towers for the close-ups, but any wide shots just have CG rain. I would never have guessed!

Andy Serkis did the voices for the Uruk-Hai who says the "maggoty bread" line, and the orc who says, "Yeah, why can't we have some meat?" (The actor in the suit for the latter is, of course, Jed Brophy, who went on to play Nori in the Hobbit movies.)

Somehow it never registered for me that Orlando Bloom has brown eyes, and so he had to wear blue contacts when he played Legolas ^^' But sometimes he wasn't able to wear the contacts (or forgot), so there are some scenes where they had to fix it in post.

PJ called the Treebeard from the animated Bakshi movie "a walking carrot" XD He also said that Treebeard is his favorite character!

The scene with Smeagol killing Deagol was originally going to be a flashback right after Frodo says his name, and then the Nazgul shriek would pull the audience out of the flashback. They decided not to do that for pacing reasons and because we haven't spent much time with Gollum yet, so that's why they put it at the beginning of RotK instead.

Bernard Hill had his son with him on the shoot and would play with him in his downtime on the Edoras set. Puts things into perspective when you hear that he was the one who came up with the line "No parent should have to bury their child."

They were originally looking at Bernard Hill for Gandalf! (I feel like I've probably heard this before, but anyway.)

They filmed a flashback to Aragorn and Arwen's first meeting?! Viggo shaved to make himself look younger, and it was a scene of the two of them "frolicking about the forest." It was originally going to be put in the Lothlorien sequence, but they cut it out in favor of that scene between Aragorn and Boromir, because they decided it was more important to earn Boromir's death scene than to remind the audience of the romance. I agree with that decision, but it would be cool to see that footage! (I say as someone who prefers to skip the TTT Aragorn/Arwen scene entirely XD)

Originally, the warg battle was going to happen at Edoras itself. It was going to be at night, everything was going to be on fire, and ultimately that was going to be the reason everyone evacuated and went to Helm's Deep. Also, a warg was going to be set on fire and end up dragging Aragorn through the streets, and that was going to be how Aragorn would be left for dead. Ultimately, the reason they did it the way they did was because the studio wasn't sure Weta could do a flaming warg (something all three of them laughed about, considering everything Weta did manage to do with flying colors), and because it would have been a nightmare to light the Edoras set at night, because that location was so remote and so windy. Which is why every scene in Edoras takes place in the daytime!

In the scene where Faramir talks about his dream where he saw Boromir in the boat, you can see a sort of pinkish color in the water around Boromir's body. That's because the dye from his shirt (surcoat? idk) was leaking out into the water! XD

When Andy Serkis did ADR for the Forbidden Pool scene, he couldn't manage to sing the song off-key, so they had to use the audio from the motion capture footage XD

They shot some additional footage of Aragorn unconscious on Brego's back, riding past an orc encampment, that they never ended up using.

Theoden was originally going to give a speech to the soldiers in the armory, but Bernard Hill's performance was so inspiring that it defused most of the tension they were trying to build up before the battle, so they took it out. Would love to see that footage!

So the boy Aragorn encourages before the battle ("There is always hope.") was Philippa Boyens' son, who was 13 when they filmed the scene. But by the time they went to do ADR, his voice had broken, so they had to get a different child actor to say his lines.

Aww, the extra who was missing an eye said he always felt self-conscious about his missing eye, so he always wore an eyepatch. But then after they gave him a close-up and the guy saw the movie, he said he felt much better about his appearance! :')

Treebeard's line "I always like going south; it feels like going downhill" was ad-libbed!

When Saruman turns and reacts to all the water pouring in and washing his machinery away, that shot was actually a reaction shot to Wormtongue on top of the tower from the RotK movie that they repurposed for this scene instead, since they hadn't shot any reactions to the flood.

At least at the time of the recording of this audio commentary, the final shot of Gollum, where he's arguing with himself and ultimately decides to lead Frodo and Sam to Shelob, was the longest CG shot in any movie. (I tried to google what the current record is, but couldn't find anything, so if anyone knows, I'd love to hear about it!)

Fran Walsh: "All cinema storytelling, to a degree, is shallow. That's the nature of the medium. You've got two or three hours to present a world and a dense story with a hundred themes and a ton of backstory, in this instance, and 22 characters...so you can only really have the veneer of depth. You really can't have anything that comes close to the depth of the books, or the experience of the books. So I think what we attempted to do was to use the language of the books where we could and to certainly invoke them, the iconic images, where we could, but to keep the storytelling very much...to modernize it, if you like, in terms of cinema language. So we didn't, for example, use the style of storytelling that was in the books between these different after-the-fact storytelling, of Sam and Frodo and then a chunk of the Aragorn story. We completely undercut it. That was a far more immediate and engaging way to connect it to the audience. You can't really hope to satisfy people who adore this book, with the movie. You can only ever give them the sense of what might have been. That's all a film can do. I think, in that sense, films...I mean, they're entertainments. They're just not going to give you the pleasure that a book can give you."

I was tagged by @marsharmonicorchestra , thank you so much it was such fun to answer those. I honestly love that kind of games 🤩🤩

How old were you when you read/watched LOTR for the first time? I was a Harry Potter kid and none of my parents/aunts/uncles/anyone really was into fantasy genre, so to be fairly honest I only read it last year. So i was 17 years old for both movies and books. I kinda regret that i have no experience of being a tolkien kid, but also it was so fun to be able to read it while analysing it as more mature person. And i fell hard as never.

Favourite lotr character?: Boromir forever and ever. It was not initially that I fell in love with him, but as someone who feels very deeply connected to my humanity and weaknesses of human kind, he just spoke to me. Also i am an older sibling and i relate to him a lot. Next in line are Faramir, Arwen and Aragorn, no order in particular.

Books or films?: both? I don’t know, depends on the mood. I love books, but movies are easier to interact with when i’m tired and i need some comfort in life. Also Viggo and Sean. So yeah, both

Favourite movie: The Fellowship, but my favourite scene is from Return of the King (i hope i did not mix them up lol), deleted one with Boromir and Faramir in osgiliath

Hello. As a watcher of a few drama series as well as a reader, I like how you noticed Easter eggs from season 1. Me personally, I follow character development as well as Easter eggs. (Not saying you don't.) For example, following Disa's development in season 1, one can conclude that she is a character who will fall under Sauron's influence going forward, which also, reinforces lore regarding the dwarves and hoarding. Interesting how the showrunners reinforce that she will get corrupted.

I want to add that if I go by Easter eggs alone and ignore character development, Bronwyn will be under his influence, as celebrimbor and Galadriel were, and Ar-Pharazon. However, since they will all know who he is this season, based on her character development, and not just Easter eggs, when she learns who he is, I see her leading a faction against him. Also she isn't in the lore so I wonder how much she will be a focus going forward, whereas Disa might be more likely effected.

I agree! And you bring up a very interesting topic.

I love how we can predict each character's story arc and development. The potential (and assured) tragedies and triumphs make for an enriching analytical experience. It often saddens me that not all of the characters we love will have happy endings. For example, you have beloved characters like Isildur, who dies tragically, being ensnared by the Ring. We know how vulnerable Eärien is to certain influences, so her looking into the Palantir in episode 8 does not bode well, considering Sauron can communicate through Palantiri. Theo also has an extremely dismal path ahead of him.

The Stranger is a little less predictable, and we might think it's obvious that he'll end up being good (he probably will), but there are a few indications in interviews that it's not set in stone yet, despite him saying, "I am good."

So, in Season 1 alone, every character has a pretty solid foundation from which we can predict the direction of their development, and it's really fun to talk about. You brought up Bronwyn and Disa, so let's talk a bit about them.

This was used even for Gollum, whose ending was nigh certain from the beginning, although he was technically redeemable.

"He was interested in roots and beginnings; he dived into deep pools; he burrowed under trees and growing plants; he tunnelled into green mounds; and he ceased to look up at the hill-tops, or the leaves of trees, or the flowers opening in the air: his head and his eyes were downward." (FOTR: The Shadow of the Past)

DISA

There's a lot here. I agree that she will be deceived by Sauron. I love her, but she is walking a very tight rope.

It is difficult to drive the point home without talking extensively about mithril, but I am in the middle of explaining all of the mithril stuff on my blog, so my thinking will be exposed soon.

Sauron can plant certain words in the mind, so that the speakers believe it came from their own thoughts. For example, Isildur, Gollum, and Bilbo independently describe the One Ring as being "Precious." Celebrimbor talks about "the key that unlocked the dam," "power over flesh," and a "power of the unseen world," without knowing that those are Sauron's words. Then, he continues to use words that Sauron has used before (as he fidgets with the mithril).

(1x08): Galadriel: "Those words. 'Power over flesh.' Where did you hear them?" Celebrimbor: "I... I was conferring with my smiths, I think. I... No, I believe those are my words." G: "Was Halbrand with you?" C: "What's it matter? It's over."

(1x02): Galadriel: "Your home. Where was it?" Sauron: "What's it matter? It's ashes now."

So, when Elrond turns to Disa and says...

"Go towards goodness."

...we are left with a very important question:

Will she?

Depends. Is her gaze up or down? Is she whispering the same things that Darkness whispers, or is she "whispering of grander things than Darkness ever knew?"

In episode 7, her true motivations are brought to light. She's not evil, but she is treading some dangerous territory. After Dúrin says that he failed Elrond, and it's his fault that the Elves must flee, Disa gives a very unnerving monologue:

"No. No, it isn't. [...] It's your father's. He's grown too old, too suspicious, his mind too feeble, his eyes too dim to see that no matter how many crests he hurls to the floor, one day this will be your kingdom—Dúrin IV's. Not your brother's. Not some other Dwarf-lord's. Yours. And mine. And together, we will rule this mountain and all others before our time is done."

Pause.

Now, I don't know about you, but that just raises a ton of exclamation points in my head. Do the highlighted words sound familiar?

"Against your enemy. And mine." "Together, we can save this Middle-earth." ["Save, or rule?"]

Disa is so intent on gathering mithril, that she doesn't recognize the nature of what she's saying.

She seems to genuinely care about Elrond, and the idea that he and his people will become extinct if they don't leave Middle-earth is probably distressing, especially since the Dwarves have a supposed means of saving them, and Dúrin III isn't helping.

However.

In retrospect, the apparent dependency the Elves have on mithril seems almost like an excuse for her.

Disa: "Lice-bearded, uncaring, old fool!" Dúrin: "What if he's right?" Disa: "You're not thinking of letting this happen!" Dúrin: "What choice do we have?" Disa: "You said the other Dwarf-lords were open to the proposal. If we reopen the mine ourselves, prove to them there's a safe way to gather mithril, perhaps they'd make him listen. Perhaps we could force your father's hand" (1x07).

She never mentions Elrond, or the Elves.

Also, who really likes to use Force?

"But he ruled rather by force and fear, if they might avail" (The Silmarillion: Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age).

"Supposing that's the trouble. Supposing we've been using too much force" (1x08).

But what connection could she possibly have to mithril? Why does she want it so badly?

She was the first one to find it. In episode 4, Dúrin tells Elrond, "Disa detected it during a routine gold-seaming."

The remainder of her monologue is the most revealing.

"That mithril belongs to us—to you and me. And together, one day, we are going to dig."

Keep in mind that Elrond has just been cast out of Khazad-dûm, and Dúrin and Disa believe there is no stopping the Elves from leaving Middle-earth. The only race they are concerned about now is the Dwarves. Yet, Disa is still set on obtaining mithril, and she no longer has the excuse that it's to save the entire Elven race. She emphasizes "to you and me," as if to say, "Forget the Elves. Now, it's ours."

All of this sets Disa up to be extremely vulnerable to Sauron's intriguing suggestions, if/when he comes to Khazad-dûm. I think we can compare her to Celebrimbor in a lot of ways. She's a smith, like Celebrimbor (and Sauron), and wants to make the Dwarven people prosper. But excessive ambition can lead to pride, and...

"Humility has saved entire kingdoms the proud have all but led to ruin" (Galadriel, 1x06).

BRONWYN

We can end on a happy note.

Like Disa, Bronwyn can also be compared to Celebrimbor in some ways. Celebrimbor is an artificer, who wants to bring beauty to Middle-earth, and Bronwyn is a healer (which is what Sauron claims he wants to be). However, she is much more humble, with little ambition but for the welfare of her son and neighbors. She also has Arondir to help her in moments of despair, like in episode 5.

This season, she seemed to be very defensive of Halbrand, understandably so. Leading the Men of the Southlands was "a burden [she] never sought to take up," so having the Promised King finally appear was a tremendous relief. She did everything she could to heal his wound in episode 7 and asked Galadriel what to do with him when it continued to fester. She did not hesitate to gather provisions for the ride to Eregion, and was the first to say, "Strength to the King."

But despite her fidelity to Sauron's kingly guise, I think we can be assured that she will perceive the peril sooner or later. Let's repeat the same question as before:

Will she go towards goodness?

Depends. Is her gaze up or down? Is she whispering the same things that Darkness whispers, or is she "whispering of grander things than Darkness ever knew?"

Answer:

Theo: "Do you remember when I was little, when I used to have bad dreams?" Bronwyn: "I remember." Theo: "Do you remember what you used to say, when you would hold me in the dark?" Bronwyn: [nods] Theo: "Would you say it to me, now?" Bronwyn: "In the end, this shadow is but a small and passing thing. There is light and high beauty, forever beyond its reach. Find the light, and the shadow will not find you" (1x06).

By the time everyone knows who Sauron is (after the One Ring is forged), I can picture a dynamic like the one in Númenor between the Faithful and the Kingsmen. Bronwyn and Arondir's standing might be similar to Míriel and Elendil's. Judging by this scary piece of foreshadowing, Sauron will probably try to seduce Bronwyn in some manner. Charlie knew what he was doing when he made this face:

Arondir would obviously NOT be too happy about that, and in episode 7, we can already see many hints of his distrust. Considering that Sauron injured himself with a wound that needed Elvish medicine (which probably required some sorcery), I wonder if Arondir witnessed something. (I can make another post on this, later.)

In any case, I don't think Bronwyn will be 'conquered.'

The lyrics of Plea to the Rocks solidly point towards where her arc is going.

Hork-Bajir are incredibly dangerous and very powerful. They stand on two legs, balanced

blade. Atop their snakelike heads are two more blades, swept forward. And their tails end in long, sharp spikes.

They are not a species you want to start a fight with. Which may be why they were such a

peaceful, even poetic, species. They had no one to fear. Until the Yeerks began to make

them into Controllers.

I’m actually really glad with who is in my tribe so far. Like tim and heather. Hopefully this doesn’t screw over my plan since they all ready know how I play. Isbdownriwkd maybe I shouldn’t have revealed everything to them. Maybe loyalty will perserve and they won’t fear back stab me ;-; This will throw a kink into things. I’ll see how much I can get the loyalty of the others to have a buffer against this chance

I just got situated on my new tribe and I was absolutely delighted to meet everyone. Everybody seems super friendly and excited to play. Right off the bat I recognized 3 other people from Zwooper, where I usually play Survivor games. Two of them I know vaguely, and another I am actually pretty close with. I know he’s a brilliant player and I have every intention of working extremely closely with him but I also know he is a huge threat, makes great speeches, and wins a ton of games. So I am just checking every avenue at this point. I am making sure not to get too comfortable in my little zwooper alliance. I have been talking to all the other new players - particularly Tim who seems really cool. It will naturally be in our best interests to keep our Zwooper background under wraps else we could easily be targeted for knowing each other. 

So I'm going to summarize my night one experience!!! The cast seems very very promising ! I love my tribe although I haven't spoken to everyone privately just yet. So inside the rules were an extra search up the mountain and I took it! I'm positive that I'm not the only one who found it though but it did in fact come in handy. The first task was to photoshop a picture of Zach riding a rhino during some historic event and that was hilarious lol. Its not the best quality since I made it for speed. On the second trip, I had to do a puzzle and omg do I hate puzzles why must yall make me suffer. I spent like 20 mins trying to do that puzzle lmao!!! This definetly puts everyone who took the advantage ahead by atleast one step. So the challenge!! Its a scavenger hunt and im happy that we get to do that! I really am stoked about the shakespearean stuff but Tim isnt a fool. This is fans vs faves after all and its important to be aware of the game collectively. Your boy  (partially) studied the cast as of last night more specifically the favorites and I am aware that Rebecka is extremely fond of scavenger hunts so Im going to make sure I put some extra effort into the challenge. I'm super excited for the game to pick up and really start rolling. Hopefully I can be able to make it pretty far and at least past first merge boot. Let the battle begin I guess!

Im going to slow down the rate at which I search the Dientes de Navarino. Im speculating that once you use all 5 paths on level one up you're searching potential is over. Its smarter if I wait foran alliance so we can collaborate on which paths to use, ensuring that we dont run out of searches. I can also use that knowledge to sabotage them mwahahaha.

I'm back at it again I LOVE this new pink room with pretty smiling faces at the top. The other confessional rooms could never. I feel guilty because this is how I act in like a group project at school like pretending I'm helping by little comments but in reality I'm just sitting there because I don't know what I'm doing nor do I have access to stuff that can help. I'm feeling... ANNOYED. I know I participated a lot to that challenge and I had fun doing it! So even though it didn't result in a win I do NOT regret taking flour to the face or shanking three balloons or any of the other crazy stuff I did. With that being said we COULD have won this challenge if everyone pulled their weight. Four people didn't lip sync. If those four people had taken the five minutes required to make a half-decent lip sync video we would have beaten the fans by ONE point. The four flops are Shoib, Tee, Trixie, Katherine. Tee and Trixie did a lot of photos and seem pretty cool, so they are off the table. That leaves Shoib and Katherine. Shoib is in my Zwooper alliance of four so I have to cover for him... which is really unfair. If he wasn't a number for me I would not at all be opposed to voting him off for this. He really let the tribe down and contributed a whopping TWO things to the entire list. I used his rule-reading video as leverage while trying to point out who contributed more between Katherine and him. Most people seem to kind of agree that Katherine didn't do much, doesn't talk much, and isn't an asset to the team. Hopefully, we can just trim the fat and send her packing. 

I plan on getting the vote on Kathy because I feel like she contributed the least amount to the comp and I haven't talked to her much.

I love autumn and would love to work with her but every time we try to work together in a game it's like cursed so here's hoping third times the charm??? Julia the witch is cool af I hope we can work well together after I voted her out in crossroads!! Lol!!!!!! I hosted circle with drew this past season and he hasn't said much to me/I'm pretty sure he's hated me since day 1 which idk why Bc he's never said anything about it but I just have social anxiety and I feel like he doesn't like me!! Idk here's hoping. He approached me asking if I'd wanna secretly work with him which I'd be incredibly down for because I'd love to work with drew but I just hope he's not fucking with me!! [This confessional is for before the immunity results, basically the first two days of the game)

Ahhh yes, time for my 2nd org. Last time I placed 2nd and this time I'm coming for the crown. 

Being on a fan's tribe is kind of intimidating, just because I think that all the players on the favorite's tribe are more experienced than us which could be an advantage. 

So let me just give a quick rundown of the cast. 

I actually know Tyler, Pocket, and Shoib from Zwooper. When we got added to tribes, Pocket & Shoib added me to a chat with them and were like "Zwooper Alliance!" And I was like umm, Tyler is from Zwooper too? Lol. They wanted to create a separate chat with him, so I don't think they trust him. I definitely trust Tyler the most though, we've been friends for a while.

As for everyone else on our tribe, I've talked to Tim and Trixie a bit, and they both like Nintendo so I like them! Heather seems cool too. I talked to Tee for a while as well, but the conversation doesn't feel that exciting. I haven't talked to Katherine or Vi much.

I am worried about the Faves tribe because Autumn, Julia, and Rebecka are there from crossroads. I backstabbed Julia and Rebecka in that game, oops. And I feel like they might form a tight alliance because Autumn told me that her and Rebecka wanted to be secret allies in crossroads, and I know that Julia and Rebecka got stoned every night in Ponderosa so they're def close. 

However, Drew is on the Faves tribe and he is a good friend of mind. He wanted me to play this game with him before we got cast so I think he would be loyal to me if we ended up on a tribe later on. 

Sooo we just lost the challenge, great. And we would've won if these people just did a FUCKING LIP SYNC! How hard is it to fake sing for 3 minutes?? Gtfo. Tyler is GUNG HO on getting someone who didn't lip sync out, and he brought up Katherine's name. And I'm fine with that. We barely talked Day 1 and she hasn't said a word to me in two days. Her name is going around because others are bringing her up to me. I feel like this vote should be more intense since the first vote for crossroads was, but then again that was a starting tribe of 6 and this is a starting tribe of 10, so maybe people are just focusing on challenge threats rn. Either way, I just hope my name isn't going around. That's all I care about.

Thoughts on: Meriadoc "Merry" Brandybuck from "Lord of the Rings" (2001-2003)

DISCLAIMER: I have only read FOTR and TT – I have yet to read ROTK. However, I want to analyse movie!Merry in particular because I love Merry in the movies.

SECOND DISCLAIMER: Some of the scenes I discuss are from the extended editions of the films.

I know most LOTR fans will choose Frodo, Sam or Pippin as their favourite hobbit of the four – but for me, it’s always been Merry. I may have, admittedly, been slightly biased by the fact that he’s played by Dominic Monaghan (who also plays Charlie in “LOST”, another character I will be analysing at some point) but as a character, Merry is one of my favourites.

When we first see Merry in ‘Fellowship of the Ring’, he’s with his cousin/friend/partner-in-crime Pippin, causing mischief by stealing one of Gandalf’s fireworks at Bilbo’s birthday party. The firework goes off, and he and Pippin are subsequently punished by being forced to wash dishes. The first impression we see of Merry is that he’s a bit of a lad, a young man who likes to have a good time, and he gets into trouble often by being mischievous with Pippin.

We later learn in ‘Return of the King’, when Gandalf and Pippin are riding to Minas Tirith, that while Merry always got Pippin “into the worse sorts of trouble”, he was “always there to get him out”. In the books, Pippin is the youngest of the four hobbits, and so we’ll assume the same for the films: as the older cousin, Merry would perhaps feel responsibility for Pippin, especially on their journey. “He’s always followed me – everywhere I went, since before we were tweens” – again, Merry clearly shares an extremely close relationship with Pippin, and it would be no surprise if he felt he had to keep Pippin safe while they’re on their journey.

Hobbits are shown as being one of the strongest, hardiest folk in the series; all four of the hobbits display bravery and courage throughout the films, Merry included. When the Ents come to a decision that they shall not interfere in the world (“this is not our war”), Merry is furious and makes sure they know it (“but you’re part of this world!”) Bearing in mind that by this point he (and Pippin) have been a) kidnapped by Urak-hai/orcs, b) nearly killed several times, and c) separated from the Fellowship, you’d think he’d have had enough and wanted to go home. But, no, Merry wants to fight, he wants to do the right thing – Treebeard even says, “You are very young and brave, Master Merry”. Merry is one of the bravest characters in the series, and it’s shown throughout the entire arc of the trilogy.

Another example of Merry’s bravery is when Rohan answer Gondor’s call for help (the lit beacons that were, in fact, lit by Pippin); as the soldiers prepare to go to Gondor’s aid, King Theoden overlooks everything when Merry approaches him with his sword. “Excuse me. I have a sword. Please except it.” (he then bows) “I offer you my service, Theoden-King.” Just remember – tiny little hobbit, offering to fight against enemies far bigger than him…Merry is brave as hell. Theoden recognizes this, and makes him an “Esquire of Rohan” – an honour I’m sure most hobbits never dream of.

Later, Theoden tells him, “Little hobbits do not belong in war, Master Meriadoc”, and Merry looks devastated: “All my friends have gone to battle – I would be ashamed to be left behind!” Merry could have easily said, “Okay, maybe I should stay behind, it’s too big a battle for someone my size” – but nope, he wants to fight and battle, for the greater good.

Speaking of Merry’s size, it’s brought up in another conversation – this one between him and Eowyn. As they’re resting on the way to battle, he gives her an entire speech, which is referred to as “Merry’s Simple Courage” in the leaflet/guide that comes with the extended edition DVD:

“My lady, you are fair and brave and have much to live for…and many who love you. I know it is too late to turn aside. I know there is now not much point in hoping. If I were a Knight of Rohan, capable of great deeds, but…I’m not. I’m a hobbit. And I know I can’t save Middle-Earth…I just want to help my friends. Frodo. Sam. Pippin. More than anything, I wish I could see them again.”

Merry doesn’t want to go to war for glory or to win any crown or titles – he just wants to help do the right thing. He wants to see his friends again, more than anything – and at this point, he doesn’t know if he ever will again, for he hasn’t seen Frodo and Sam since they were separated at Amon Hen, and the last time he saw Pippin was when he and Gandalf had to travel to Gondor after Pippin looked at the Palantir. Any of them could die in battle or on their journey, and Merry knows that – but he still hopes, if only a little, that he will see them again.

And, of course, Merry fights the Witch-King with Eowyn, stabbing him before Eowyn finishes him off; he was injured when he did this, as we see during the film, and it’s Pippin who finds him later on the field of battle, injured and dying. I just…I love that Merry does this, okay? He not only rode into battle against his liege-lord’s wishes but then helped kill the Witch-King of Angmar – which killed Theoden, who he’d sworn fealty to, of course. There’s something very noble and poetic about this, I feel.

Merry is often forgotten or passed over, I feel; Frodo is the Ring-Bearer, Sam is viewed as the “true hero” of the series, and Pippin is the “comic-relief” who becomes brave and fights – but people seem to miss out Merry, which I feel is unfair because he’s a character who deserves recognition and respect.

1. How did you get into fandom? What was your catalyst to finding the tumblr community? Well shit. I got into fandom in general during a time most people on tumblr might not remember -- back when Quizilla was only quizzes and people made each question a section of their story with the answer holding the end of the chapter. The stories were drastic between good and bad, so a “Quizlist” was created to showcase good fics. I was a part of that forum and community, finding stories to add to the list, going through nominations, and offering beta services to Harry Potter fics. Then, I kinda fell away during college and randomly went looking for Inuyasha fanfics I remembered a couple years ago. Revived my long forgotten tumblr blog, dove headfirst into what was left, and haven’t looked back since.

2. What’s your favourite part about your favourite fandom? I don’t know if I can choose a favorite fandom, but I love the worldbuilding that happens. In the Naruto fandom, I’m attracted to the headcanons and people that build everything missing. The same for Inuyasha -- those things that focus on building the world around Papa Inu, or focusing on what happen in present time while Kagome’s gone, or things like that. I love the ingenuity that comes with it and how people can create around what’s there.

3. If you could spend the day with any fictional character, who would it be and why? Asuma! Hands down, Asuma. Can you imagine the stories he has?! He would just be so much fun to talk to, to learn more about his life and enjoy the day. Either him or Ron Weasley. 

4. What fictional character has had the biggest impact on your life or has inspired you the most? Ooooh Edmund Pevensie, definitely. The Narnia books are so close to my heart and I treasure them so much -- and his character is one of my absolute favorites. To see how he handled himself and earned a pride in who he could be by giving up pride in who he was, just absolutely fantastic. His is one of my favorite character development stories of all time and it goes further through the series. Love it so much.

5. Talk about your favourite book (I KNOW IT’S HARD but if you had to pick one). Howl’s Moving Castle! Okay, so it’s hard to miss that I love the movie, BUT THE BOOK. It’s wonderful! Miyazaki definitely edited and changed a few things from the book to make the movie, so the book is almost a new story. It adds in this sense of magic and realism that could be explored in every which way AND SERIOUSLY. If you’ve seen the movie, READ THE BOOK. It’s worth it!!

6. Do you have any accomplishments or anything in your life you feel the most proud of? I...honestly don’t know. 

7. Tell us about a project you have going on! Or if you don’t have one, maybe something you’ve always wanted to write or draw? Does wedding planning count?! I roleplay, so outside of writing those threads and asks, wedding planning is really taking up my time. I’d love to get back into writing fanfics, but it’s just not working out right now. 

8. How do you feel about AU’s? I LOVE AUS. I have 12 stories posted on AO3 right now and there are 7 aus in that. I’ve always felt there are other authors who can better explore canon and I love reading those, but my heart is always in creating other verses.

9. Do you have any favourite composers or soundtracks? I love the soundtrack to The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. If I have trouble settling down to write, I usually will put on that to help me focus. It’s just wonderful. Other favorite soundtracks are The Lion King, LOTR: FOTR, and Remember the Titans. As for favorite composers, I bounce all the time, but I think it’s probably Chopin.

10. In your opinion, what is the best Disney movie to come out since Disney’s Golden Age? So, apparently Disney’s Golden Age includes the movies he worked on while he was alive. For some reason, I’ve been mixing that up with Disney’s Renaissance. Knowing that, the best movie is Beauty and the Beast, but my favorite is Mulan. 

10. Fangirl about something, really go wild! There’s this peanut butter chocolate smoothie at the bagel place that just opened up in the front of my town. It’s delicious. Like, so good that even though the bagels taste more cakey than anything and the service absolutely SUCKS, I’ll continue going back and paying five dollars for because as soon as I start thinking about it, I want one. It’s a perfect balance between the two flavors and isn’t too thick to drink through a straw, and the chocolate chips are big enough to be satisfying when you bite into one. It’s fan-fucking-tastic and now I want one.
