yeah 2023 wasn't always fantastic but growing is so much better than being stagnant. i might have the worst year of my life ahead, you never know, but at least I got over my first love & opened myself and my heart to other people. if i die tomorrow at least i did the scariest thing i'll ever have to do, come out to my parents. maybe i'll get kidnapped next week or i'll get a fatal illness but you know what! i'll never cry myself to sleep again in fear of my parents' reaction to the truth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that is worth so much more than a comfortable un-painful year
#i feel like I have lived 12 million lifetimes during the last year#so many scary things turned out to be such blessings#the realisation that doing hard things is possible wasā¦something#I havenāt felt this content with my life in perhaps 10 years. or ever#one day Iāll divide my life in before this year and after this year. āAs I sit down to write this letter to you all, I donāt quite know where to begin, or how I feel. Thereās sadness, of course, that in a few short weeks this will all be coming to an end. But every time I think about you ā about what we have achieved over the last 12 years, together ā I canāt help but smile. Because you made it. You made the experience, this journey that we have been on, far greater than you will ever know. There is nothing more special than the love between a team and its supporters, and I canāt ever thank you enough for what youāve given us over the years.
I think back to those humble beginnings at Staines. Wheatsheaf Park might seem like a million miles away from what weāve built at Kingsmeadow, but to me it was the start of something magical. A small, but dedicated, home fanbase quickly became a small travelling army. Those chants we heard at Wheatsheaf Park soon started popping up at Donny. Then Birmingham, Manchester, wherever.
You know I did everything I possibly could to make it the best experience for you, pushing the club to put on buses, even funding trips myself over the years ā and plying you with wine gums and mints to keep you sugared up! More than that, I wanted to provide you with a team thatās reflective of you, a diverse group that we can all see ourselves in. One that is proud to represent the badge, that would run through brick walls for each other and do anything to achieve success. Because thatās what you would do for us.
Weāve created so many magical memories together. From the first FA Cup win at Wembley, quickly followed by a first WSL title at Staines, to those early Champions League trips ā something special was building, and itās just gone on and on from there. Honestly, thereās too many highlights for me to list.
When I think of the journey weāve been on, I cannot imagine what it would have been like without you. We had a taste of that during Covid, and football just wasnāt the same. I feel sad that you werenāt able to be with us for the Champions League semi-final win over Bayern Munich, and I honestly believe it would have been a different experience if youād been there with us in the final. But to come out of the other side of that with an FA Cup final at Wembley against Arsenal, on a cold afternoon in December, and being together again is something that will always live with me.
I love that youāve created a community for yourselves, starting at Wheatsheaf Park and then onto Kingsmeadow, which has become like a fortress because of you, and now Stamford Bridge. As weāve grown, so have you. Wherever we go, youāre there with us in huge numbers, developing your own memories from supporting the team across the country and Europe, over land and sea (and Leicester!). Youāve been amazing to our players throughout that time, and I know youāre going to keep creating memories together long after Iāve gone.
I want to thank you for all the songs, which kept me going so many times on the bench. I especially want to thank you in those losing moments, which fortunately there havenāt been too many of. I always heard you. Always. You show your appreciation for the team no matter the scoreline or how the game has gone. Thatās what true fans are.
Youāre the lifeblood of this club, the heartbeat, and I think youāve been the envy of the entire league with the support youāve given the team. I look forward to being one of you at some point, with Harry alongside me.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for making this the experience of a lifetime.ā

MEET HALFWAY OUR NEEDS - one shot
a/n: hi! this is my first time ever posting one of my writings online (I'm about to shit myself but oh well). I literally wrote this so fast I'm impressed, but anyways I (kind of) proof read this -not really- just quickly read through it after I finished it. English isn't my first language (I'm so self conscious I'm probably gonna say that every time I post something) but besides that, I really hope you enjoy this <3 feedback is truly appreciated, it helps me improve!
-Joey
Pairing: Harry x Y/N
Warnings: detailed sexual content
Word count: 9.2k (of mostly smut??? sorry)
the one where Harry wants to get married but Y/N doesn't.
As you grow older, you start realizing life isn't as easy as it seemed when you were a kid. Not everyone gets lucky enough to have a job they're passionate about. Not everyone can satisfy all their necessities. In fact, you realize it's most people instead of "not everyone".Ā Friendships and relationships won't last you a lifetime (those promises of being there for each other forever now seem like genuine naiveness) if you don't put enough effort in them. When you are young you believe that being able to play for hours straight without getting bored is what true friendship is about. And maybe it is, during those years.Ā Adult relationships require a lot of time, and effort. And sometimes, sacrifice. Conversations have a different weight, and being able to trust someone with your most uneasy thoughts and experiences is hard. To find and to keep.Ā When it comes to love, you start realizing that the thrill and intensity of teen romance isn't what true love is about. It's not about getting into fights, hardcore jealousy and toxicity behaviors. It's about being able to just be there, with that someone. Being able to coexist in each other's worlds, share what you're passionate about without any fear or remorse, being able to communicate. To ask for help when needed. Now, that doesn't mean things can't get complicated.Ā For the past two months, Y/N and Harry's relationship has been balancing on a very, extremely, thin line.Ā After six years of being together, and three of those living together, being the happiest they've ever been, everything started to look different for Harry. He was ready to take a step Y/N wasn't.Ā Harry always knew he wanted to get married, have kids, move to a pretty house outside New York (it's been his favorite city ever since he visited when he was 12, then moving all the way across the globe from Manchester to attend Columbia University). And when he met Y/N, he knew she was the one he wanted all that with. But Y/N... she wasn't so sure that was the life she wanted. Having kids was a no at least until she was in her 30's. And even then, she knew she'd have to re consider if that's what she really wanted.Ā She loves kids, she has a couple nieces a nephew's (coming from a big family has it's perks) and she's a preschool teacher. She's good with kids, but she wasn't so sure she'd be a great mother. Not for a specific reason, but she really feels like that's the case. Taking care of someone else's kids versus your own is extremely different. Now... it gets even more complicated when it comes to marriage. She doesn't believe that a piece of paper kept in a legal's office will make any changes in their relationship. It will all stay the same, married or not, so she just doesn't think it's important, nor worth the money.Ā Harry, on the other hand, thinks marrying her will change everything in his life. For the better. He loves her more than he'll ever be able to put into words. And because he can't put it into words, he feels like it's the actions, small and big, that help him communicate his love a bit better.Ā He still remembers the moment he mentioned marriage to her (not for the first time, but definitely the first time he actually thought 'ok i really want to marry her right now') like it happened yesterday. He remembers exactly what it felt like to physically feel his heart shatter inside his chest, and the way he silently cried himself to sleep that night with Y/N in his arms.Ā "Would you ever, uh... consider g-getting married? like, I don't know, if we ever have, like, an actual conversation about it, would you consider it?" He asked her in the middle of their Lord of the Rings marathon.Ā Harry could feel her intense staring at the side of his face. She was quiet for so long, it killed him. He truly wanted the cushions of their pink couch to just suck him inside the furniture piece.Ā He wouldn't dare to turn his face. He couldn't look at her, no. Not to face the rejection of his lifetime.Ā "Uh, I don't think so." She said, and Harry only nodded, thinking the conversation was over
once he felt her move her head to face the television again. "You know how I feel about you and how I feel about marriage. I honestly think it's useless. You don't need a signed paper to know how much I love you, Harry." Her tone was soft, but the words that left her mouth felt like a million knives inside his chest.Ā That conversation sent him spiraling over a thousand thoughts, overthinking their entire relationship and how he now felt like they were getting nowhere with it.Ā He respected her decision, though. That's why he didn't bring it up again.Ā Y/N sensed his mood change that same night. She kept her mouth shut, because she truly didn't know what to say. She didn't understand where he was coming from, or why it was so important to him. At first, she didn't think his mood was affected because of her not wanting to get married, maybe he had something else going on and was struggling to talk about it, but after many sessions with her therapist going over and over their conversations and trying to decipher why everything was so weird between them, she came to the conclusion it might have to do with them not getting married.Ā She just didn't want it. And she didn't know how to make him understand. But she couldn't lose him either. He was her everything. It took her months to be able to sit next to him like she did the night he was watching The Little Mermaid in the living room of their small New York apartment.Ā It's been months since they last shared a movie night, or a date. They've been eating dinner while having awkward small talk about their jobs and friends, going straight to bed after cleaning everything up, each to their side. They haven't touched each other except the occasional greeting peck ever since that night. And it was killing both of them, but neither knew how to approach the other.Ā As she sat down to his right, she saw him tense immediately. It broke her, to see him so on guard around her. Y/N couldn't look away from him, with her body facing him and her head rested on the back of the couch, she wanted to grab his hand so badly, but she didn't know if he'd reject her.Ā The doorbell rang, and he looked at her for the first time that night. His eyebrows had the cutest frown and she wanted to kiss his forehead to make him relax, but of course, she didn't.Ā She sent him a shy smile and stood up, going straight to the door and picking up the cash she left prepared on the little table next to it. She could feel his stare burning holes in her back, which sent chills down her spine.Ā "Thank you so much." Harry heard Y/N say, immediately hearing the door shut. From where he was sitting he didn't have a clear view on who was on the other side of the door. Y/N made her way to their kitchen (to do God knows what, Harry thought) only to appear seconds after with two tubes of ice cream (from his favorite place) and two big spoons.Ā She sat back down next to him with her legs under her, a little closer than moments ago but still out of Harry's reach.Ā She handed him one of the tubes, and Harry immediately noticed it was chocolate chip mint, his favorite, he might add. He looked up at her, who gave him a small shrug of her shoulders and a side smile, and he couldn't help but smile widely at her, his deep dimples on full display.Ā God, I missed those dimples so bad. Y/N thought.Ā But what she didn't know is that Harry was thinking about how much he missed her. Entirely. He hated himself for overthinking every small detail, and for thinking so lowly of their future. But he couldn't help it. "Thanks." He shyly took the ice cream and started eating right away. Not five minutes later, he grabbed her by her thigh and dragged her next to him, only to have her close to his body. And because he missed her. And her body heat. And her addictive smell of clean soap and vanilla. And a lot of other things which would take a lifetime to enumerate.Ā She looked at him from her new spot, and due to the proximity, she had to shift her head slightly up to look at his face. She slid her right arm around his left,
carefully looking at him to see any kind of reaction that might show discomfort, and when she noticed his smirk slowly and barely making an appearance, she relaxed next to him, fitting half of her body under his arm, with his elbow resting on her stomach and her head on his upper arm. Half way through the movie, with their ice cream tubes forgotten on their coffee table, Y/N looked back up to him, and even though she's been doing it every two minutes, Harry knew she wanted to say something this time. He doesn't look at her, though, thinking it might shy her away, but right when he was trying to concentrate back on the film, he heard her say something.Ā It was barely audible, almost like she didn't want him to hear it. Did he imagine it? Maybe he's so deprived from her and her touch and her words that he's finally going insane.Ā Harry looked at her this time, and looking straight at her grey eyes so closely for the first time in two months felt like a thousand fireworks exploding violently on his stomach.Ā "Did you say something?" He looked at her confused, and the look on her eyes is so hard to decipher he thinks she definitely said something she's scared to repeat.Ā "I miss you." Y/N repeated herself, barely louder. But then he knew for sure he didn't imagine it.Ā His Y/N missed him. For so long Harry thought he was losing her, that after distancing himself from her she finally realized she not only didn't want marriage, but a relationship with him at all. But she missed him. And he missed her.Ā "You miss me?" He asked, almost like he didn't believe her, his tone was low and his voice sounded deeper that ever.Ā Y/N nodded, but she felt pathetic. She felt like he didn't miss her like she missed him, maybe he didn't miss her at all. For two months she's been feeling like he wanted out, that this relationship felt like an obligation to him.Ā Harry felt her slowly sliding away from his arms, and that's when he realized he's been so stuck in his head he still hadn't replied.Ā "Don't," he quickly grabbed her by her thigh with his hand closest to her body "please, don't go." She stayed still in her place, looking at him with soft but sad eyes. "I miss you so much, Y/N." Harry turned on his spot so he's facing her, and softly cupped her jaw with his free hand, caressing her cheek with his thumb. "You have no idea." He whispered, slowly getting her face close to his while closing his eyes. He kissed her forehead so lovingly she literally burst into tears. Y/N's soft sobs alarmed Harry, lifting her head up by his hold on her jaw. "Please, don't cry baby. It breaks me when you cry."Ā Y/N shifted on her place so she was with her body facing the back of the couch, her knees pressed against it, but she tilted her body to the side so she could hug Harry. She slowly draped her arms around his torso, resting her head on his chest.Ā A sigh of relief left Harry's lips, resting his chin on top of her head while he hugged her back. One of his arms was resting low on her back, while the other one rested on her shoulder, his giant hand cupping her head to softly caress her hair.Ā They stayed in that position for a long time. Y/N could feel Harry's heartbeat, and how it slowly picked up speed when she pressed her lips to his chest. And even though he was wearing a shirt, Harry could feel the heat of her lips through it. He pressed his own lips on top of her head, leaving them there for a while, almost like a very long, still kiss, until he felt her head shift underneath his lips. He pulled away just barely to allow her to look up at him, and when she noticed him quickly looking down to her lips, she stretched her neck up to press their lips together.Ā It was a short, very sweet kiss. With fear as an undertaste and nervousness written all over her. She was just scared he was going to leave.Ā When she pulled away from him, she didn't have time to open her eyes as she felt Harry press their lips together again. This second kiss was almost the same as the first one, insecure.Ā It's funny, if you think about it. How similar their
feelings were and how scared they were of messing everything up with a single wrong move.Ā Once Harry pulled away from the kiss he initiated, they locked eyes, yet again. But this time, it was written all over their faces how badly they missed each other, and how much they dreaded to feel the effects each had on one another after so long.Ā The third kiss they shared, it's initiated from both sides, almost as they were able to read each other's minds. Their lips moved in sync, and as Harry softly captured Y/N's bottom lip between his own to slightly suck on it, she put more pressure into it. The kiss slowly started to gain force, passion and need. But she was scared to take the next step. She wanted him to take the full lead, as opposed to what they were used to, just because she didn't want him to feel like he owed her anything.Ā And then, he did take that step. The hand he had holding her jaw moved under her hair to grab her by the neck, while slowly tracing her bottom lip with his tongue, asking for access to her mouth. And once she allowed their tongues to meet, his hold on her lower back got stronger, draping his arm completely around her waist to pull her closer. That action made Y/N's body lift up from how strong he was holding her, and she took this as a sign to move. She straddled him on the couch, sinking (almost on slow motion) to sit on top of his thighs. Harry groaned in frustration. She's too far away, he thought.Ā "Closer." He said in a pleading tone, and Y/N complied immediately. She slid her body up his thighs, and he forced her chest to collide with his. The hand that was holding her neck slowly traced her entire spine, to join his other one on her lower back.Ā Her tongue felt so warm and soft, so inviting. He had always loved the way she kissed him, with so much passion but with a gentleness that was so her. She managed to fully relax in his hold once her hands found their way to his hair, right behind his ears, and he couldn't help but whimper at the feeling of their groins pressing together.Ā This sparked a burning fire inside both of them. A fire that burned so good they'd rather die caught on it, than to never feel it again.Ā Harry slowly slid his hands up and down her sides, all the way from her outer thighs to her side boobs. And when he did it for the second time, on his way up he slid his hands under her shirt instead of continuing their path over it. When his hands stopped at the higher part of their path, he caressed her side boobs with his thumbs, doing the same afterwards right below them, and when she finally grinded down on him, letting a deep groan leave her lips, he cupped her breasts with his hands.Ā But when she pulled away, he dropped his hands automatically. He started eating his brains out thinking he really messed up, he was taking things down a road she didn't want to take yet, which was okay, it's not like he only wanted her body back, but he was scared he made her uncomfortable.Ā Only then, his dick grew incredibly hard when she grabbed the hem of her oversized t-shirt to pull it up and off her body. Her perfectly perky boobs bounced slightly when Y/N dropped her shirt on the floor, resting her arms on her sides.Ā He looked up from the lovely sight of her boobs thinking about how badly he wanted to devour them, only to find her with an uncertain look on her face. And he hated it. He hated the thought of her doubting herself so much.Ā Harry ran his hands up and down her soft stomach, and then slid them up, softly but barely touching her boobs. His destination was somewhere else (for now), and he grabbed Y/N by her neck to pull her close.Ā Their lips met again in the softest kiss they shared that night so far, and Y/N melted in Harry's arms like the forgotten ice cream behind her. He kissed the corner of her lips as he pulled her hair slightly so he could start kissing her jawline, down to her neck, leaving pepper kisses all over her skin.Ā When he reached her collarbone he started sucking and biting (she loved when he bit her) knowing he couldn't do it to her neck
due to her job. She let a moan leave her lips, and when Harry slid one of his hands to grab her by her hip, she grinded down on him again, with more confidence this time.Ā Harry lowered his face a bit more so he could finally reach one of his favorite features of his Y/N, her boobs. He took her left breast in his mouth, sucking on Y/N's nipple, making her whimper and jerk forward, tightening her hold on his brown locks to pull him even closer. He slid the hand that was holding Y/N's hair down so he could pay attention to both nipples at the same time, while using his hand on her hip to keep a steady peace to her grinding. Once she caught up with the slow but rough peace he wanted, he let go of Y/N's hip to grab the nipple he had in his mouth with in his hand, and he pinched both of them at the same time, rolling the hard buds on his fingers, then moving his mouth to the other one.Ā He spent a lot of time paying attention to Y/N's nipples, nibbling, sucking, groping, knowing damn well they were extremely sensitive (she could orgasm just by nipple stimulation if done correctly, but she really wanted him right now). Y/N pulled from his hair enough to let him know she wanted something else, and when he let her nipple fall from his mouth, he looked straight into her eyes.Ā Harry's cheeks were tinted a pretty shade of pink, and Y/N couldn't help but admire the beautiful man under her.Ā He looked at her with such pure eyes, but lustful at the same time. She didn't understand how he could look so innocent but so fucking hot at the same time, it was unfair how angelic he was.Ā She grabbed a handful of his shirt, to let him know she wanted it off. Once Harry complied, throwing his shirt somewhere near Y/N's, he immediately reached for her cream silk shorts, tugging the elastic band down as a silent plea for her to get out of them for him.Ā She stood up from the couch, knowing Harry loved when she undressed herself for him, and still in between his legs holding eye contact, she slowly slid her shorts down her thighs along with her underwear.Ā Harry couldn't keep eye contact for long, though. His eyes were glued to her glistening core that was slowly making an appearance, and he was getting frustrated at how slow she was being.Ā He sat straighter on the couch so he could reach for her, and slid his hands down the front of her thighs, and on their way up he slowly slid them to their insides, getting close to where she wanted him. He slid one of his hands down again, but this time he grabbed her right leg from behind her knee, to pull it up. He made her rest her feet outside his thigh, which was now in between her legs. In this new position he got a clear view of her pretty pussy, all on display for him.Ā "So wet, baby." He whispered, and she couldn't help but return her hold on his hair to pull him closer to her. "All for me?" Harry asked her, looking up to stare at her right in the eyes. When she nodded, he hummed in response. "Let me take care of you, it's been so long. You probably need it so much, don't you?" His voice was so fucking deep and raspy she nodded desperately in response. Y/N couldn't handle much teasing, and she let Harry know by tightening her grip yet again, and forcing his face to be so close she could feel his breathing on her.Ā "Please, Harry." She pleaded. Harry loved teasing her, but he knew it's been a long time, he didn't want to frustrate her much.Ā He finally licked very slowly up her folds, all the way from her opening to her clit, humming when he reached her sensitive bundle of nerves. Y/N let out a long sigh of pleasure, her eyelids fluttering shut. She felt like she could literally come just by that, and when he closed his lips around her clit, she grind her hips against his lips. He started switching between sucking and pressing his tongue on her clit until he started to move it, creating undefined figures with the tip of his tongue.Ā They missed each other so much, so so much. And they both knew sex wouldn't magically fix everything. They knew they needed to work things out. But
sometimes conversation needs a little push, something to remind them why they need to fix things. The magnetic pull they felt towards each other was unbearably strong. They needed each other, in every imaginable way, but at that moment, they needed each other's bodies and emotion, no words needed. Just feel each other close.Ā Harry gave her clit a sweet kiss, and looked up at her while his fingers traveled up and down her folds, until they found their home in her opening. He searched her eyes for approval, and when she whispered a soft 'please' he slowly sank his ring and middle finger, knuckle deep. She whimpered loud at the sudden pressure, and he groaned at the tightness of her hole.Ā He rested his forehead on her navel for a second to let her adjust, and when he felt her grind on his fingers, he held her gaze while lining his mouth with her clit yet again. Harry started to work his fingers in and out of her, sucking on her clit. But what turned him on the most was her slow grinding on his face and fingers, like she was fucking his fingers nstead of his fingers fucking her.Ā Harry used his free arm to slide it under her leg that was up on the couch, and grabbed her ass with a tight grip to pull her even closer.Ā The pleasure was beginning to feel overwhelming, the pressure deep down on her belly begging for release was making her desperate. Y/N's moans and breathy sighs were becoming louder and consistent and the way he could feel her legs slightly shaking gave away how close she was to her release.Ā Harry wanted her to make a mess on his face, so badly. He lowered his head and replaced his fingers with his tongue, not before he moved his fingers one last time to massage her spongy spot at the front of her insides. He fucked her with his tongue as he used his soaked fingers to stimulate her clit, circling in the fast and rough peace he knew she enjoyed so much.Ā Her insides felt like a rocket about to launch, between his moans sending vibrations through her entire body and his fingers stimulating her clit the way she exactly needed, she became a moaning mess. Y/N couldn't comprehend how she was still standing up, even though Harry's arm under her thigh was holding most of her weight up, her knees were about to give up soon.Ā "H-Harry, I'm so close," Y/N spoke as clearly as possible, knowing her panting was messing with her words, "please don't stop." He admired the way her jaw tightened and relaxed, her mouth opening shortly after, making a perfect 'o' with her eyes pressed shut.Ā With one specific movement of Harry's tongue, she finally let go. With her eyes rolling back she let a couple of continuous 'fuck's quickly leave her mouth. Her entire body jolted forwards, bending a bit over him while his mouth was still attached to her core, helping her ride her orgasm, making it last for as long as possible.Ā Y/N pulled Harry away from her with her grip on his hair once it became too much, and looked down at him. Without a second thought she bent down to lock her lips on his, with so much force it threw him back into his original seated position on the couch.Ā "Take your pants off, now." She demanded, but adding an almost inaudible 'please', mostly for her. He happily obliged, taking his boxers down with them, imitating her previous actions. His cock sprung free, and he hissed at the feeling of freedom. Harry was so focused on her he didn't realize how painfully hard he was. He could feel his own heartbeat thundering in his chest with so much force it was almost alarming. He needed her so, so badly. Once his pants and boxers were thrown and forgotten on the floor, she straddled him.Ā Giving him a quick but soft kiss on the lips, she began making her way down his neck, reaching back up again to (what she knew) was his most sensitive spot behind his ear. Y/N sucked a small bruise, and he whimpered. God, Y/N loved those small noises he made. She kissed her favorite beauty mark on the right side where his neck meets his shoulder, and that small action alone made his heart feel like someone was squeezing and
twisting it. He missed those small loving details from her.Ā Y/N kept making her way down his chest, leaving wet, open mouthed kisses all over him, not forgetting to suck and nibble at his nipples. She loved taking care of him. All of him. And the way he enjoyed her playing with his nipples was something he was always scared of admitting, but he knew he didn't have to ask her to do it, because she just knew.Ā She sunk down to her knees, still sucking and licking the skin all over his stomach while caressing his thighs (Oh, those thighs). Y/N finally grabbed his dick and slowly stroked him all the way from his base to the tip, collecting some of the precum leaking from his deep pink, swollen head. He groaned loudly, lifting his hips to fuck her fist once. She took that as a sign to lower her head even more, his cock now in front of her face.Ā "Want my mouth, baby?" She tapped her plump lips with his tip, and when he looked down at her, she moved her closed lips around him, almost like she was using his precum as lipgloss, her hand still slowly moving up and down his length. She got him hypnotized. "Hmm?" She raised her eyebrows at him.Ā "Y-yes, please." He heavily sighed. His begging made her drip down her thighs, he knew how much she loved it, and she knew he loved begging too, maybe even more than her. She always took such good care of him.Ā She swirled her tongue around his tip once, then proceeded to lick up his shaft a couple of times like his dick was an ice lolly. Once she finally wrapped her lips around his tip, he sighed in relief, and relaxed his shoulders. Harry's hands grabbed her neck to pull her head down, and she surprised him when she suddenly deep throated him before even working her way there.Ā "Fucking hell, Y/N." He moaned when he felt her humming around him. Harry grabbed her hair making a shift ponytail, to help her get her hair out of the way, and using his grip on it to lift her head, her mouth left his dick, and he smirked at the small pout on her lips. "You are so perfect." She ignored him and tried to lean forward again, which made him smile at how desperate she was. He let her get what she wanted, allowing her lips to wrap around his tip again. She licked up his slit and swirled her tongue around him, and hollowed her cheeks to suck on his tip. She took more of him in her mouth, using her right hand to work on his base and her left to gently cup his balls and play with them.Ā Harry knew he wouldn't last long. It's been a while since they've done anything remotely sexual, and his hand... his hand wasn't her. So even though he could get himself off, nothing in the world would compare to how it felt when it was his Y/N pleasing him.Ā His breathing became irregular as she bobbed her head up and down his length in a steady rhythm, and when she tugged on his balls he knew he had to pull her away right that second, or he would come. And he really wanted to, but not like this.Ā "Baby, please," he tried to pull her head away with a tug on her ponytail, but she didn't oblige. Instead, she looked up at him through her eyelashes, still bobbing her head up and down on him, and that sight alone could make him come in a heartbeat. But he kept it together. "I wanna come inside you, p-please."Ā And that made Y/N pull away, her mouth making a 'pop' sound when she let his dick fall from her lips. She then straddled him, her hands finding their home right behind his ears, grabbing him by his hair, while his made their way around her body, hugging her close. His dick fit perfectly between her lips, and Y/N grinded on him to feel his wet cock slide through her folds, creating the most delicious friction. Harry kissed her passionately, trying to pour everything he felt in the kiss. And Y/N did feel it, because she was trying to do the same. They repeated the action a couple of times until she reached in between them to grab a hold of him, positioning him on her opening.Ā And when she finally sank down on him, they locked gazes. They sat still, connected. They were so close. They felt so close.Ā Harry
nudged her nose with his, softly brushing their lips together. He then noticed a single tear run down her cheek, and reached for her face quickly. Right before it got in her mouth he caught it with his thumb, and she leaned in his touch.Ā They didn't say a word. Just sat still.Ā With Harry caressing her cheek, and Y/N looking straight into his eyes. Y/N leaned forward to capture his top lip between hers, leaving the sweetest kiss, repeating the action with his bottom lip. After, she went for the right corner of his mouth, his cheek, his jawline, his pulse point, behind his ear. And repeated the exact same trail on the left side of his face, finishing with his top and bottom lips, one last time before starting to slowly grind and circle her hips on him.Ā Harry just couldn't stop staring at her. The amount of love and adoration he held in his heart for that woman was beyond words, and actions. And he then understood. He understood that he could live a life without marriage if it meant living it with her. He could handle it. He would get over it.Ā He involuntarily dropped his head back and shut his eyes with so much force, while hissing through gritted teeth when she finally lifted her weight on her knees, sliding up on his dick until he was almost entirely out, only to sink back down roughly, going so deep it made both of them moan loudly at how tight she was.Ā She slid one of her hands around his neck to grab him by his chin, forcing him to look at her. Y/N kissed him again, and this time their kiss was messy and desperate, between crashing teeth and loud moans due to her fucking him with all she got.Ā She let go of Harry's mouth to sit straighter, using his shoulders as support to move faster. This position gave Harry a view he wouldn't trade for anything in the world. He could see his cock, so drenched of her arousal, and her pussy taking him so well. The wet sounds leaving their connected centers were magical, so erotic, accompanied with the small whimpers and moans coming out of her perfect lips.Ā Harry thought she looked like a fucking goddess, with her round and perky tits bouncing up and down every time her tight pussy took him entirely.Ā "You're being so good, baby. Letting me fuck you just how I like it." She whispered to him, staring at his heart shaped, swollen lips. The lips she was so addicted to.Ā "You take such good care of me, angel. Always." He replied, looking into her eyes which were still glued to his lips. She licked her own, and moved forward to crash them against his on another messy kiss.Ā They both were so close. Harry couldn't understand how he managed to hold his release for so long, but he was proud of himself.Ā Y/N separated their lips for a moment to make him suck her point and middle finger, which he complied immediately, knowing exactly what she was doing. He then watched her lower her hand between their bodies again, but this time to reach for her clit, where she started to gently rub circles, stimulating herself.Ā Harry started thrusting up with force, to meet her halfway, tightening his grip around her middle. Y/N bit down his shoulder to stifle a loud moan, which only made Harry thrust faster.Ā "Please come for me, Y/N, I wanna feel you come all- all around my cock." He managed to plead between breathy whimpers. And it only took a few more thrusts from him to make her insides explode in the most blissful sensation, like electricity running all the way from her belly to her toes. She stiffens in his hold, her inside walls tightening and clenching so hard it almost sends him out of her, making his balls tighten right before he lets go. She could feel him emptying inside her, his spurts of cum filling her up, leaving both of them exhausted, satisfied and utterly fucked.Ā None of them moved for a while. Y/N's breathing calmed him, almost like a lullaby, and the way Harry was gently stroking her back made goosebumps erupt all over her body.Ā Without any warning, Harry stood up, making Y/N wrap her legs around him, she hissed through the feeling of his dick moving while still
inside her, and she bit down his shoulder again. She didn't question what he was doing, she didn't care.Ā Harry sat her down on a cold surface after turning the lights on, and when she opened her eyes she realized he sat her in their bathroom counter. He put some space between them so he could finally look at her again. The fact that they barely spoke during sex today (when they were usually pretty vocal) made everything so... different. Not in a bad way, though. It made them both enjoy sex as the pure performance of just loving someone. No need of crazy positions, weird kinks or edging each other the way they're used to. Just love. The need to feel connected. The need of physically demonstrating each other's love. How they are each other's entire world.Ā "I'm gonna clean us up, okay?" Harry told her softly, and she only nodded in response. She leaned in to give him a soft kiss, which honestly caught Harry off guard now that the sexual act was over. But made him happy nonetheless. She was scared of him shutting her out again. But he was scared of her getting tired of him.Ā He knew she was a free soul. She wanted so many things, and settling down to start a family like he wanted to wasn't in her near plans, maybe in her plans at all. And he knew that. He understood it, and he respected it. He just thought about how badly he truly wanted that life with her. He was just scared she would let him go.Ā They both looked down and hissed the moment he slid out of her. Harry had the perfect view of their mixed cum dripping down her core, making a mess on the marble counter under her. And Y/N saw his dick twitch at the sight, but decided against commenting on it. Even though it made her slightly smirk.Ā Harry took his time cleaning both of them, and Y/N didn't look away from him. Not even for a second. He lifted her up again and literally sat her down on the toilet so she could pee. They've done this a thousand times, it was normal for them, she wasn't modest about him seeing or listening to her pee.Ā After they brushed their teeth next to each other, stealing curious looks (especially Harry at Y/N's boobs through the mirror), they went to bed together.Ā And for the first time in two months, she rested her head on his chest, with his arms wrapped around her.Ā The only thing she didn't notice was that once Harry knew she was asleep, he couldn't keep it in. He cried himself to sleep that night. But it wasn't any different from what he was used to from the past couple of months.Ā The only difference was that this time, he knew he'd give up his dreams if it meant he could keep her around.Ā &Ā The next morning, Y/N felt something, or someone, shift behind her. She knew it was Harry. His arm was thrown over her waist, resting dangerously close to her boobs (she secretly loved the way Harry seemed obsessed with her boobs) and she could feel his breathing hit the back of her neck.Ā She hugged his arm closer to her body to let him know she was awake, which made Harry shift even closer, cup her left breast and press his pretty pink and warm lips to her neck.Ā "Good morning." She said with a breathy laugh, her morning voice was a sound that drove Harry mad. She sounded way too sexy for her (or his) own good.Ā "Hi." He nuzzled her neck with his nose, "how'd you sleep?" He left another lingering kiss, this time below her ear.Ā "Amazing. Haven't slept this good in a while." She replied honestly, wiggling her body back towards him so their torsos were pressing together.Ā "Mhm, me too." He whispered, tightening his hold around her, his morning wood pressing on her lower back. She could already feel the pool of her arousal in between her legs, and when she arched her back so now his dick was pressing against the curve of her ass, he groaned in her ear.Ā He slowly started to grind himself against her ass, moving down on the bed a bit so he could better his position. And when she grinded back against him, he reached in between them to position himself on her opening. He pushed the tip in, just enough to feel her tight hole around
him.Ā "Can I?" He asked her to make sure they both wanted this. When she sighed deeply in pleasure and murmured a 'yes', he slowly thrusted into her, both moaning a bunch of profanities.Ā They both were huge lovers of morning sex. It increased their moods during their days, helped them relax and carry their days with a carefree feeling. So, he fucked her. Hard. Not even close to how loving they were last night. He woke up with an unbeatable energy, and he wanted to take advantage of it. He fucked her in the position they woke up in. He turned her to her stomach and fucked her while (almost) laying completely on top of her (she loved feeling his weight on her) and he fucked her on all fours, only to end up in their initial position, with her back against his chest on their sides, so he could play with her clit to help her come.Ā That morning they spent it in bed, Y/N made them breakfast, Harry read a book. They both knew they needed to talk, but they wanted to enjoy some time where everything felt normal between them again. So they avoided the topic.Ā But the conversation they owed each other kept being pushed. And for another two months, everything slowly started to feel normal again.Ā Usually, avoiding conversation will lead up to more hurting. But with Y/N and Harry, it ended up becoming a realization point.Ā Harry got in terms with the fact they wanted different things. He decided she was worth anything and everything in the world, because she was his world. But what he didn't know was that Y/N spent those entire two months imagining what a life like the one Harry wanted with her would be like.Ā And after one day, on Harry's 28th birthday, during a small walk they were taking on Central Park, she realized she would do anything in the world to make him the happiest man he could ever be. She kissed him so passionately that day, interrupting their walk. He looked at her with a confused look when she pulled away with the brightest smile on her face. But that smile made him confirm he was willing to give up his dream of getting married.Ā That's why in mid February, Y/N found herself shopping in a very expensive jewelry store. She knew Harry liked that place since his 'H' and 'S' rings were from there. They had an amazing section of handmade rings that she spent a long time going through. She wanted to pick the best one she could find.Ā She found the prettiest, most fine silver ring with a red stone adorning it's top. She knew he would love it. It definitely didn't look like the typical engagement ring, but nothing about Harry was typical. It would match the rest of his rings lovingly, and Y/N knew he would simply love it. Not only because it was a pretty ring, but because it would mean something big for them.Ā Three days later, Y/N came back from work to find Harry sitting on their living room couch watching the forecast. Why? Who the fuck knows. He never watched cable TV.Ā Y/N just stood there for a while, just staring at him.Ā "Hi, love." He greeted her. "Are you alright?" He asked with his eyebrows furrowed. The crease between them made an appearance, even though it was there most of the time.Ā "Hey." She finally moved, dropped her keys on the little bowl sitting on top of the small table in the hallway. "All good, gonna put some comfy clothes on really quick." She lied. She just couldn't wait any longer. Watching him sit there all frustratingly beautiful doing absolutely nothing was fucking annoying, it was so unfair how beautiful he was. She had an entire evening prepared but she just couldn't wait any longer. She wanted to do it now.Ā She dropped her purse on their bed and quickly got rid of her shoes, but didn't change into anything comfier. She just grabbed the small black velvet box from her t-shirt drawer and went back to the living room, sliding it in the back pocket of her jeans so he wouldn't be able to see it.Ā Harry looked at her with a confused look, wondering why she was still in her work clothes walking directly to him when she said she wanted to change.Ā She sunk to her knees in
between his legs, which only made him even more confused. "You sure you're alright?" Harry gently asked her. She just hummed in response and grabbed the remote sitting on the coffee table (moving as little as possible, she didn't want him seeing the small bump on her jeans because she knew he would ask about it), and turned back around.Ā She rested her ass on her ankles, and her arms on top of his thighs. "So..." she started.Ā "So..." Harry repeated, confused.Ā "I love you, so very much." Y/N started and Harry's breath got caught in his throat. He wasn't expecting this at all. "So much, you don't even understand." Her voice was barely louder than a whisper. They haven't told they loved each other in so long, scared of the other not saying it back. God only knows why, because it was clear as water they still loved each other with their whole beings. "And I know we both always wanted different things."Ā This is it. Harry thought. She's breaking up with me.Ā "And I know there are some things I believe that you will never understand, and there are some things I- I didn't understand, for a long time." Harry furrowed her eyebrows further at this last part. Now he truly didn't understand what she was trying to say. "For so long I thought I wanted something, you know? Like I was sure I had it all figured out for myself, the life I wanted. But I actually- I was searching for a life that wasn't mine. And I didn't realize that what I already have is everything I could possibly want." Y/N's cheeks were flushed, tears streaming down her face so fast they were drenching his hands that were now pressed against her cheeks, softly caressing them. "I know now, that love is about finding common ground. Meeting each other's needs. And sometimes we have to step out of our comfort zone to do that. And I came to a conclusion." She swallowed the big lump on her throat, and that finally allowed her to let a long breath leave her chest. "I love you more than anything in this world. I hope you know that, and I know I struggle sometimes with letting you know how much I adore and admire all of you. But I promise to do my best today, and for the rest of my life, to make sure you know how loved you are. How much I'm willing to do for you. And this took me a while to understand, but I do now. I understand why you felt like you needed to take that 'next step' with us. And I understand why it'd make you as happy as you always said. So, it'd make me really happy to ask you to," Y/N reached her pocket and heard him gasp when she pulled the box in front of him, revealing a beautiful ring for him, "marry me." Harry was speechless. Truly, ultimately speechless. Not only was the love of his life asking him to marry her, she was saying she truly wanted this. Harry's gaze kept going from the ring back to her eyes. And after a while of no one saying anything, Y/N cleared her throat. "H," she whispered, "Will you marry me?" She asked, the soft tone on her voice and the question he dreamed so many times asking her knocked him back to life.Ā "Yes, yes, Y/N, yes- oh Y/N-" he choked a sob, and the biggest smiles appeared on both their faces. Y/N threw herself to him, wrapping her arms around his neck so tightly. He helped her straddle him so he could wrap his own arms around her.Ā They held each other for a few seconds, both crying the happiest tears they ever let drop, and when she pulled away to put the ring on him, he surprised her by crashing their lips together.Ā They shared their most passionate kiss in the entirety of their relationship, both still crying, smiling, spilling so much love and adoration with each stroke of their tongues. When he pulled away, she finally placed the box in between them again.Ā "Can I put it on you? I know you like to wear your 'H' ring on your ring finger, so we could put it somewhere else, you know? And make it our own thing-" Harry interrupted her giving her a soft peck, "or we could-" another kiss, "I don't know." She finally gave in, pressing her lips harder against him.Ā After another long kiss, he finally told her
where he wanted his ring, and with a last kiss he patted her ass to let her know he needed her to stand up.Ā "Wait here." He pointed at her, and she sat on the couch with a soft 'okay'.Ā He returned moments later with his hand behind his back and a lopsided smirk. He sat in the same position she was for her proposal, in between her legs.Ā Before he said anything, he moved his hands in between them, opening a red velvet box. She gasped like Harry did moments ago when she saw the beautiful ring with a small red stone (yes! Like his own ring) placed on top of a very thin and delicate silver band that was sitting inside the small box.Ā "It was my grandmother's." Harry said in a quiet tone. "She gave it to me before she passed away a couple months after we met, remember?" She slowly nodded, lifting her gaze to meet his eyes. There was so much love written all over his face. "I told her you were it for me. I knew I wanted this with you ever since we met at our university library. She gave it to me in hopes I could... give it to you some time." He gulped, his Adam's apple bobbing. "I kept it hidden from you all this time. Didn't want you to find it and make everything weird between us. But I'd really love if you could, um... wear it if you want?" He shyly asked.Ā "It'd be an honor to carry her ring with me, Harry." His face lit up so fast at her response.Ā "Yeah?" He asked, perplexed.Ā "Yeah." Y/N replied with a big smile.Ā "Will you marry me, Y/N?" He asked her this time, and she couldn't help but giggle.Ā "I asked you first." She pecked his lips. "But yes, Harry. I'll marry you." And she kissed him again, and he couldn't help but smile so widely she ended up with her lips against his teeth.Ā After putting his grandmother's ring on her, they shared another night of pure, loving sex. None remember how many times they made each other come, but they did have another important conversation between rounds.Ā "Something else I wanted to tell you..." She said, in between kisses (they loved giving each other soft small pecks all over each other while they were talking). She was straddling him in their bed, his back against the headboard. He didn't want to pull out of her just yet, keeping his cum inside her for as long as possible.Ā "I know you're ready to have kids, like, right now." She said, and he raised his eyebrows playfully at her. "I can tell by your breeding kink, honestly." He let a loud laugh leave his chest, making her smile too. It was honestly hilarious, I mean, look at their position.Ā "I decided I really want to have kids with you." He gasped, "But..." he sunk down in his position, a visible pout on his lips, which she kissed away from him. "Promise me you'll wait for me, until I'm in my 30's" He locked eyes with her. She really wanted this. So much.Ā "Only three more years?!" He asked with so much hope.Ā "Three more years and we can start trying, I promise. I just thought that- that we could get married now, have some time as a married couple, you know? To enjoy ourselves." She shrugged and he couldn't help but smile widely and her, nodding frantically. "That way we are both adapting to each other, you know? Meet halfway our wants."Ā "God, I love you so much." He chose to say, instead of replying straight away. "I'll wait a lifetime to have kids with you if that's what you wanted, just please- decide before you reach menopau-" He couldn't even finish his sentence since she shut him up by putting her hand over his mouth.Ā "Don't even say it. God, I don't wanna be old." She sighed in frustration.Ā "I honestly can't wait to grow old with you." Harry said with such a loving tone, like an enamored teenager, hugging her closer to him. And she couldn't help but smile back at him. Because even though ageing scares her, she's ready to spend the rest of her life with him.Ā "I love you, my angel." Y/N told Harry, before kissing his lips, yet again.Ā
"I love you, my Y/N." Harry whispered to her, keeping her face close to his.Ā

This story would be nothing without you.Ā
Ā ~~~
Chapter 1
āTrust me.ā
I did. I trusted Katniss with my life, and so it seemed at the timeā¦with my impending death.Ā
After everything we both went through to survive, enduring the pain and horrors only The Hunger Games could bring, it wasnāt enough.
It would never be enough.Ā
The Capitolites craved this abhorrent form of entertainment and under the watchful and devious eye of President Coriolanus Snow, thrilled at the sight of children kill and be killed.Ā Ā Ā
As it was in previous games, once the first wave of bloodshed was spilled, tributes from Districts 1 and 2 formed packs like wolves and hunted down the weak and vulnerable one by one before turning on themselves until only one was left standing.Ā Ā Ā
The Victor.
All this savagery was broadcasted live each year across Panem in all its goriest detail and deemed mandatory viewing for every citizen.
Through it all, Katniss and I beat the odds and fought our way out of the gruesome web the Gamemakers spun to be the last two remaining tributes from the same district. But I should have known betterā¦should have never allowed myself to be duped into believing the odds would at last be in our favour.Ā
All our valiant efforts to stay alive was thrown in our weary and battle-scared faces.Ā
President Snow had no intention of honouring the change in rules by allowing both of us to live and for the first time in The Hunger Games infamous history, have two tributes jointly crowned as Victors. So when the words bellowed in the air announcing the revocation of those rules, it came as little surprise to me.Ā
The promise of a peaceful life and all the wealth any citizen could ever want held no sway over me. Already knowing the odds would never be in my favour, I accepted my fate.Ā
For as long as I could remember, it had always been a fanciful dream of mine to live a life with Katniss, if she would allow it. Dreaming of our toasting and the vows I would say to her as I broke a piece of bread I baked myself and brought it to her sweet mouth. The feel of her soft body as we made love for the first time, even as far as raising a family of our own someday was a stupid pipedream, and I foolishly clung onto it all. Any hope of it becoming a reality was ripped from my grasp and shattered into a million pieces.Ā
The choice was a simple one. When we were reaped, I vowed to do everything I could to protect Katniss even if it meant sacrificing my own life so she could live. I had no chance of winning and besidesā¦no one needed me back home. But it became apparent Katniss had other ideas.Ā
āTogether?ā
The sound of her voice echoing my question came as a soft whisper and in that moment we understood each other. If we couldnāt leave the arena together, then we would dieā¦together.Ā
In the face of death itself, that one singular word gave me a strange sense of calm and peace.Ā
āOne.āĀ
Starting off the count knowing how little time I had left in this cruel and merciless world, the chance to tell Katniss what Iāve always felt in my heart was before meā¦and quickly ticking by.Ā
āTwo.ā
I inhaled a deep breath sure the words would flow but instead my voice fell silent. Time was clearly against me but how many words would I need to express what Katniss meant to me?
In the precious dying second, my hand as if possessed with a will of its own, reached for her braid. This was something I had always longed to do and if I couldnāt say those words to Katniss, then I hoped she would feel them through this one innocent touch.
I would have given anything to sketch those steel grey eyes staring back at me. A chance to kiss her deeply and unravel her braid as I gently combed my fingers through the silky dark tresses the way I hoped she would like. Just one last chance to watch over her as she slept soundly in my arms and whisper the words she should have heard me say years ago.
But this was the cruel reality I was faced with and the closest thing I would ever get to realising any part of my dream. And I made sure not to let that final moment between us slip by. Ā
āThree.ā
I focused on the only image I would take with me into the darknessā¦her eyes.
Slowly, we brought the handful of poison berries to our lips, ready to end this before the Gamemakers took the choice away from us when the deafening sound of Claudius Templesmithās desperate shout rang out from the hidden audio speakers, freezing us both from any further movement.
āSTOP! STOP! STOPā
ā¦and so we did.
***
All that seems like a lifetime ago instead of weeks. The Hunger Games, The Victory Tour and everything in between changed after the cameras finally stopped rolling and we boarded the train for home. And as we sped closer to District 12, Katniss began to withdraw from me and eventually shut me out completely and it confused me.
What did I do to make her feel so indifferent towards me?
Those lonely nights on the train were the hardest to deal with. Sleeping without Katniss beside me was a new torture all on its own but it was what she wanted. I guess in the end, conscience got the better of her and I was finally put out of my misery with the hurtful truth.
It was an actā¦a show that Katniss and our mentor Haymitch Abernathy devised to fool the Capitol into believing we were star-crossed lovers desperate to be together even in death, only it was me who was completely fooled.
But their plan worked, and it kept us both alive. The caveā¦the embracesā¦the whispered wordsā¦all those kisses were just part of the act and she wanted to forget them allā¦but I didnāt.
When we finally arrived home, the citizens of Twelve were all at the train station to welcome us home. To my astonishment, they were cheering us both as heroes. Perhaps they too, were acting in front of the cameras. But as soon as the scripted speeches were done and the crowd slowly dispersed taking Katniss and her family along with it, the finality of it all hit home.
I was alone.
***
Living in the Victorās Village was a new start. But even in our proximity, Katniss avoided having any sort of contact with me. I tried my best not to let it affect me, but the hurt I felt inside festered like an open wound.
I missed her so much.
At first, I blamed myself for Katniss distancing herself from me. She said she wanted to forget and maybe I reminded her too much of the arena and the nightmares those memories brought her.
But I had nightmares too.
Hearing her screams in the dead of night will haunt me forever and even now, it takes all my willpower to stop myself from crashing through her front door and rushing to her side.
She doesnāt need me.
At first, I thought time alone would help her figure things out in her head and I of all people, understood. But time wasnāt what she needed. I finally came to terms with what was real.
Gale Hawthorne had been her choice all along.
***
As one lonely day slowly creeps into the next, working in my familyās bakery has been my saving grace, helping me cope with my new life a little more each day. With both Bran and Rye learning new trades from the Merchant businesses they successfully married into, it left my father with no resources to help run the bakery, making me his only viable option.
The strain showed on his face and although dad would never admit to it, especially in front of my mother, I knew he needed my help desperately. So, when I suggested I could work in the bakery for a few hours each day, he accepted my offer in a heartbeat. In an odd kind of way, it felt good to be needed even if I was being used to keep our family business afloat.
It wasnāt like I had anything better to do.
Understandably, my older brothers were quick to register their new living and working arrangements at the Justice Building, automatically forsaking any claims of inheritance or ownership of the bakery. But it was a small price to pay as far as they were concerned, if it meant being free from under our motherās thumb.
So, technically speaking I am now part-owner of the Mellark Bakery with all rights and privileges bestowed to any Merchant business holder, making mother my employee.
An ironic twist in fate.
***
Safely hidden in the darkness of my own room, my racing heart begins to calm after waking from my usual nightmare. As it is on most nights, my first compelling impulse is to rush towards the opened bedroom window and look in the direction of her room and breathe out a sigh of relief when I see her.
āItās okayā¦just another bad dreamā¦sheās safe,ā I whisper to myself as I stare at the shadowy figure pacing the floor from across the way. Even in the darkness of her room, I would recognise her silhouette anywhere and sheās becoming alarmingly thinner by the day.
Katniss always leaves her lamp on during the night because she fears being left in the dark. Her phobia started soon after her fatherās tragic death in the mines and the thought of him being buried alive in the explosion has left her emotionally scarred. At least thatās what she told me once before she drifted off to sleep in my arms.
Now, each night I watch on helplessly as Katniss paces her room. When I leave my house in the early hours of the morning for the bakery I try so hard not to look, but it only takes two steps outside my front door before my eyes dart towards her dimly-lit bedroom. Sheās always there. Standing at her window, sleepless, anxiously twirling her messy braid around her fingers. When she spots me, sheās quick to move from sight.
I tell myself I must be imagining it, but I swear I can feel her eyes boring into the back of my head as I walk along the pathway, towards the gate. But I wonāt allow myself to turn around and see if Iām right. Sheās probably glad to see me leave while she waits for Gale Hawthorne to arrive.
Itās no secret Gale and Katniss are together now. My mother takes great pleasure in reminding me of this fact.
āStop pinning over that Seam trash! She used you! Itās a known fact what she does with that Hawthorne boy in those woods. Sheās probably carrying his brat inside of her. Time to get on with your own life and find a wife to help you in the bakeryā¦a nice Merchant girlā¦someone pure like Delly Cartwright. Sheās smart, pretty, comes from a respectable family. Those qualities are a rarity. Dellyās the perfect choice for you.ā
Choice. Why do I always cringe when I hear that word?
I canāt continue to ignore the facts before me. Katniss hates me. She spends every Sunday with Gale sneaking off to the woods for hours. When they return, he stays at her house until late and the curtains in her bedroom which are usually left open even during the night, are drawn until he leaves.
Iām surprised Mrs Everdeen who was brought up with Merchant values would allow such a thing, but I guess after watching us in the cave during The Games and The Victory Tour, sheās not troubled by it now and happily overlooks her daughterās lack of propriety because itās with Gale Hawthorne after all.
Iām sure to hear the announcement of their toasting soon.
I need to keep reminding myself what Katniss does with her life is none of my business. What made me think it ever was? Sheās clearly moved on with her life and maybe itās time I thought about doing the same with mine.
For once my mother may have a point.

Fine, not fine
When the pandemic broke out in 2020, I was left with nothing to do. Our WFH arrangement during those times is not something I consider as a heavy workload so most of the time I just find myself alone with my own thoughts ā which is one of the scariest scenarios for me. To kill time and distract myself from my own self-destructive thoughts, I decided to watch documentaries on Youtube but there really isnāt enough for me so despite not having a huge salary, I decided to subscribe to Netflix and from then on, I was able to watch a lot of movies, series and documentaries. I really wanna write a reflection on each of the stuff Iāve watched but Iām too lazy these days (and yet, here I am writing one).
As I mentioned, I watched a lot of stuff on Netflix but the last three that Iāve watched lately (before I start being invested with American Horror Story series), Angelās Last Mission: Love, The Good Place, and Mystic Pop-up Bar tend to have a common theme ā life, death, afterlife. I didnāt even do it on purpose; I was just really interested in the plot of their stories. What these 3 shows have in common is that they discuss about the morality and consequences and these days, Iām really interested in those topics. Lately, Iāve been questioning myself about what kind of person I am ā am I good or bad? I also keep on having an internal debate with myself as to whether or not there is an afterlife and if there is, then where will I end up? Heaven or hell? Those questions are kinda giving me some headache these days but at least itās a good distraction from my own self-destructive thoughts. Somehow, Philosophy seems interesting to me now (during my College years, I dreaded that subject but still managed to get a 1.25 final grade lol). Anyway, here are my thoughts about the shows:
Angelās Last Mission: Love
Major lesson: Keep the faith
This kdrama has such a beautiful way of presenting its story that you will fall in love with it in just the first episode! (Also because Kim Myung Sooās dimples are to die for, omg Iām so in love) Anyway, this dramaās plot is interesting: an angel who disobeyed the law (heās not allowed to meddle with the lives of humans especially since heās a guardian angel for animals) on his last day was given the most difficult mission ā to make the fallen ballerina know what love is. As I am writing this, I canāt help but feel emotional because the show knows how to attack oneās heart. I will not be telling more of its plot for I might end up spoiling it so Iāll just provide my major take away from this kdrama. (This is one of those kdramas that I can watch again and again coz itās beautiful)
I was raised in Catholic faith, which is really not a surprise for a Filipino like me since this country is heavily influenced by the Catholic Church, but ever since Iāve become an adult and finally opened my eyes and allow myself to stop living under the notorious gaslighting of people around me, I struggled with my faith in God. Itās really difficult living a traumatized life. In 2018, I seek for professional help and was diagnosed with Dysthymia and Social Anxiety Disorder. And despite therapy and medication, I have not yet healed and sometimes feel like my situation is getting worse. As such, I felt so alone in my struggles which became the reason why I relate to Yeon Seoās character. People labeled her as a cold bitch and most of them are expecting her to just move on and heal without fully understanding where she is coming from. When Yeon Seo said āDo you know what it feels like to be left behind? It feels like Iām abandoned alone in an endless desertā it hit close to home. I know that oneās pain should not be an excuse for acting up and being mean but people should also understand that healing is different for all of us ā we heal at our own pace at our own time. Pain can change a person ā I know it fully well for Iāve become a completely different person because of all the pain Iāve been through. But what this show taught me is that God is a merciful God and He will not let us be drown into the abyss of darknessā¦..somehow, He will make a way to get us back on track and sometimes itās in ways we never imagined it to be. Like how they sent angel Kim Dan into Yeon Seoās life, God will also be sending us the answer to our prayers for He loves us and He is the only one who will never give up on us ā even though we gave up on ourselves.
The Good Place
Major lesson: There is hope for humanity
Iāve been obsessed with sitcoms since 2019 (if I remember the year correctly) for theyāre easy to watch and just fun but I never expected that a sitcom will make me become philosophical and somehow question my own morality: am I a good person?
For a show with only four seasons and fifty-three episodes, The Good Place sets the bar high for a sitcom. Ā It did not drag its plotline but is able to tell the entire story in a way that leaves the viewers satisfied with it. The Good Place is a story *SPOILER ALERT* that revolves around the afterlife lives of the four main characters: Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani, and Jason who all end up in the āgood placeā because they earned enough points on Earth but thereās a catch, two of them are not actually meant to be in the good place. Eleanor and Jason both mistakenly went to the good place because they died at almost the same time as someone with the same name as them but the other two actually deserved to be in the good place. The dilemma started when Eleanor admitted the truth to Chidi, a Philosophy professor who specialized in Ethics for he is torn between helping them or snitching on them. But perhaps the biggest plot twist of all, *SERIOUSLY STOP READING IF YOU DONāT WANT ANY MORE SPOILERS* they are not really in the good place. All four of them are in the Bad Place disguised as the good place and they were specifically chosen to torture each other, just like what Jean Paul Sartre said, āHell is other peopleā Now this gets interesting because while none of these four people have committed heinous crimes which can then make them deserving of a spot in the bad place, the actions theyāve done during their lifetime on earth has bearing. At first I find it surprising how Chidi and Tahani end up in the bad place considering that Chidi spent his life in the pursuit of goodness and Tahani is a philanthropist who raised millions of dollars for charities. But then, as the show progressed, I understood. Chidiās vast knowledge of morality made him become an indecisive person which led towards the suffering of others. Chidi made other people suffer because he finds it difficult to make a choice. On Tahaniās part, she raised millions of dollars to help improve the lives of others but such is a self-serving interest ā she did not do those things because she wanted to help but because she wants to make herself look good. On Eleanorās part, while she did not commit serious crimes, she was a big ass jerk towards others during her time on earth. With Jason, although he is kind, his actions often lead to disasters and although unintentional, harm towards others. With these in mind, I guess itās safe to say that humans are doomed for the things we do are most of the time self-serving. Itās hard to make it to the Good Place because in one way or another, we do some things that affect others in a negative way. But what this show also taught me is that while itās true that hell is other peopleā¦ā¦humans have a chance to improve and be better when given the proper environment as well as when they help each other out. Just like what Michael said āThe point is, people improve when they get external love and support. How can we hold it against them when they donāt?ā
At first, this show kind of made me realized that Iāve been a bad personā¦.that most of the decisions Iāve made in life are self-servingā¦.I only do things that benefit me and I could not care less about other people but my biggest realization here is that, I acted this way because my unhealed pain and trauma is manifesting itself. I have been hurt way too much that it made me become a bad person and end up with the mantra that life is shitty anyway so why try to be good? And because of that, I felt bad. Now, I try my best to do good things, not because I want to feel good for myself but because itās the right thing to do. I have come to the realization that just because I was hurt does not mean I have the right to inflict pain on others. I know that morality is not something that can easily be answered since itās such a complex thing and humans are flawed but as what Michael said (he has a lot of great lines from the show, I canāt help but to keep on quoting him) āWhat matters isnāt if people are good or bad. What matters is, if theyāre trying to be better today than they were yesterday. You asked me where my hope comes from? Thatās my answer.ā Please, please, please watch The Good Place! I guess itās one of the best, if not the best, sitcoms ever.
Mystic Pop-up Bar
Major lesson: Grudges are the heaviest to carry/ the art of letting go
One word to describe this k-drama? HEARTWARMING. With only 12 episodes, this k-drama was able to provide me comfort and healing. I did not actually expect much from this as I only watched it because of Yook Sungjae but what I failed to realize is that this kdramaās approach to storytelling will be heartwarming. The plot is pretty simple for a fantasy drama: a woman, Weol-ju, runs a pop-up bar in order to fulfill her mission of settling the grudges of 100,000 people but as the years went by, it became difficult for her to have people to open up. When people fail to open up about the grudges they are holding, then it will be difficult for her to help them in solving their problems. And since it is taking her way too long to finish her mission, she was given an ultimatum of having to finish her mission within a month ā good thing is she found two people to help her with the case: the afterlife police agent Gwi and the human with special ability of making people open up to him just by having a slight physical contact with them, Kang Bae. I love the way these three main characters complemented each other and I sometimes wish that I was given the chance to be a customer at the Mystic Pop-up Bar not just to have them help me solve my grudges but because sometimes, all we need is people who will listen to us.
As mentioned, Weol-juās mission is to help people settle the grudges they are carrying and she makes it happen by having people go inside her pop-up bar, let them tell their stories to her and then she will eventually offer them a special drink (which she disguises as an alcohol) that will make them fall asleep so she can enter the dream world and do her work in settling the grudge. While watching this drama, I canāt help but wonder: why do people drink when they have problems? For someone who never drinks and is not interested in drinking, Iāve always been curious of it. They said that alcohol tastes bitter, so I donāt understand why it seems to be helping people in dealing with their problems? Some say that by drinking, it helps them escape their reality for a while. I did some research about this topic and according to Origins Recovery, alcohol contains anxiolytic properties which means that it helps in inhibiting stress or anxiety. As for the bitterness, I heard from someone that as time passes by, the bitterness become sweet unlike life itself in which as time passes by, it becomes more overwhelming. I guess drinking really helps people to take a pause from the absurdity of life despite its bitterness as well as the headache that follows after drinking. Moreover, who am I to judge people who rely on drinking when their life becomes a mess when I also have my own ways, sometimes self-destructive, of finding an escape from this horrible world that we live in? After all, when life gets too tough, we all just want an escape ā even though itās temporary.
With every episode, Weol-ju and her squad helped people settle their grudges and each time they do, it makes me feel emotional. This show makes me realized that all of us are carrying grudges we donāt talk about and when we do not have the avenue to vent it out, then it eats us up alive. All of us are no stranger to struggles, but it is important to be strong and courageous. We can choose to struggle alone but asking for help does not mean you are weak.
Let me end this blogpost by putting my favorite line from Weol-ju: āNo matter whatās making you suffer right now, things will settle and pass eventually. Hang in there until then, and youāll find yourself strongerā
x,

44. Was a huge supporter of LGBT+ rights, saying the following quote about fellow actor and friend, Montgomery Clift to journalist W.J. Weatherby in 1960,
āI was remembering Monty Clift. People who arenāt fit to open the door for him sneer at his homosexuality. What do they know about it? Labelsāpeople love putting labels on each other. Then they feel safe. People tried to make me into a lesbian. I laughed. No sex is wrong if thereās love in it.ā

48. Now known as the, āMe Tooā movement, Marilyn was one of the first Stars to speak out on the, āHollywood Wolvesā in a 1953 article for Motion Picture Magazine entitled, āWolves I Have Knownā. The most famous incident being with the Head of Columbia Studios, Harry Cohn, who requested Marilyn join him on his yacht for a weekend away in Catalina Island. Marilyn asked if his wife would be joining them, which, as you can imagine ā did not go down well and her contract was not renewed with the Studio. Marilyn made only one film with Columbia during her six month contract, this being Ladies Of The Chorus (1948) which was shot in just ten days!
49. Loved animals dearly and adopted a variety of pets over the years. These included a basset hound called Hugo and parakeets, Clyde, Bobo and Butch with Husband Arthur Miller.Ā A number of cats including a persian breed called Mitsou in 1955 and Sugar Finney in 1959. Her most famous pet was gifted to her in March or April of 1961 by friend, Frank Sinatra, a little white maltese named Maf. 50. The book she was reading at the time of her death was Harper Leeās, To Kill A Mocking Bird.
51. One of the movies she starred in was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture and won, this being All About Eve (1950) at The 23rd Academy Awards on March 29th 1951. 54. Was right handed, not left as often believed.
55. Third Husband Arthur Miller wrote the screenplay for Marilynās last completed film, The Misfits (1961) which was originally written as a short story for Esquire Magazine in 1957. After the tragic ectopic pregnancy Marilyn endured in August of 1957, friend and Photographer, Sam Shaw suggested to Miller he alter his short story specifically for her. Ironically the making of this film culminated in their divorce and Marilyn stating,
āHe could have written me anything and he comes up with this. If thatās what he thinks of me then Iām not for him and heās not for me.ā 56. Was Author, Truman Capoteās original choice for the role ofĀ Holly Golightly in Breakfast At Tiffanyās (1961) however, she was advised to turn it down by her Acting Coach, Paula Strasberg, who did not think the role of a prostitute would be good for her image. Writer George Axelrod, who wrote the Screenplay for Bus Stop (1956) and the play, The Seven Year Itch, ironically ended up being the Screenwriter for this movie.
Capote said this regarding Marilyn,
āI had seen her in a film and thought she would be perfect for the part. Holly had to have something touching about her . . . unfinished. Marilyn had that.ā
57. Second Husband Joe Dimaggio had The Parisian Florists deliver red roses on Marilynās grave twice a week, for twenty years, from August 1962 until September 1982. Marilyn had told him how William Powell used to do this for Jean Harlow after her death and he reportedly vowed to do the same after their Wedding Ceremony. After the 20 years he then donated to a childrenās charity, as he thought it would be a nice way to honour her memory. They also created the flower arrangements for her casket at her funeral.
58. The following five Directors directed Marilyn in more than one movie;
ā John Huston; The Asphalt Jungle (1950) and The Misfits (1961) ā Richard Sale;Ā A Ticket To Tomahawk (1950) and Letās Make It Legal (1951) ā Howard Hawks; Monkey Business (1952) and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) ā Billy Wilder; The Seven Year Itch (1955) and Some Like It Hot (1959) ā George Cukor; Letās Make Love (1960) and Somethingās Got To Give (1962)
59. Was an illegitimate child, which unfortunately was attached with a lot of stigma in the 1920s. Her mother, Gladys, listed her then husband Edward Mortenson on the Birth Certificate, although it is commonly accepted that her real father was Charles Stanley Gifford, as Gladys left Edward on May 26th 1925. Gladys had an affair with him, which ended when she announced her pregnancy and he never acknowledged or met Marilyn, although she tried multiple times over the years to speak with him.Ā
60. Stayed in a number of foster homes during her childhood,
ā George and Emma Atkinson; February 1934 ā September 1934 ā Enid and Sam Knebelcamp; Fall of 1934 ā Harvey and Elsie Giffen; January 1935 ā March 1935 ā Grace and āDocā Goddard; April 1935 ā September 1935 and June 1937 ā November 1937 and end of 1940 ā February 1942 ā Ida Martin; November 1937 ā August 1938 ā āAunt Anaā Lower; August 1938Ā ā End of 1940 and February 1942Ā
61. Had her hand and footprints immortalized in cement at Graumans Chinese Theatre on June 26th 1953, with Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) co-star, Jane Russell. Marilyn would place a rhinestone in the dot of the letter āiā as a reference to her character, āLorelei Leeā but it was sadly stolen. This was an incredibly special moment for her, as she often talked about placing her hands and feet in the many prints there, when she spent her weekends at the Theatre as a child, especially in 1933 and 1934.
āWhen I was younger, I used to go to Graumanās Chinese Theatre and try to fit my foot in the prints in the cement there. And Iād say āOh, oh, my foots too big. I guess thatās out.ā I did have a funny feeling later when I finally put my foot down into that wet cement, I sure knew what it really meant to me, anythingās possible, almost.ā
62. The famous gold lamĆ© dress worn in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) and designed by William Travilla, was deemed too risquĆ© by the censors. Unfortunately for fans, this meant that the musical number, āDown Boyā was cut from the film and we only glimpse a few seconds of the dress from behind, on screen.
63. Due to the censors, the original, āDiamondās Are A Girlās Best Friendā costume was changed to the now iconic pink dress with black bow. Originally it was to be a diamond encrusted two piece, which was extremely daring for the then Motion Picture Hays Code.
64. Loved Erno Lazlo Skin Cream, Vaseline and Nivea Moisturizer.
65. Had she completed Somethingās Got To Give (1962), Marilyn would have been the first Star in a major Motion Picture to appear nude on film. As she passed before it was completed the achievement went to fellow Blonde Bombshell, Jayne Mansfield in, Promises! Promises (1963).
66. Met Queen Elizabeth II in England at the Empire Theater in Leicester Square whilst attending the Premiere of, āThe Battle Of The River Plateā on October 29th 1956.
67. The Misfits (1961) was both Marilyn and Clark Gableās last completed films. Clark died 12 days after filming finished, on November 16th 1960. The film was released on Clarkās would be 60th Birthday, February 1st 1961 and Marilyn passed 18 months later.
68. As Marilyn died before the completion of Somethingās Got To Give (1962) it ended up being remade with Doris Day and James Garner, entitled, Move Over Darling! (1963). The film was originally intended to be a remake of, My Favourite Wife (1940) which starred Cary Grant.
69. Signed a recording contract with RCA Records on September 1st 1953. One of her songs from River of No Return (1954) entitled, āFile My Claimā sold 75,000 copies in its first three weeks of release.
70. Was admitted to the Payne Whitney Psychiatric Clinic on February 10th 1961 by her then Psychiatrist, Marianne Kris. Originally thought to be for rest and rehabilitation, following her divorce from Arthur Miller and the strain of filming The Misfits. However, Marilyn was placed on the security ring and held against her will. Thankfully, she was able to contact ex Husband, Joe Dimaggio, who stated he would, āTake the hospital apart brick by brickā if she was not released and after three days of emotional trauma, she left.
71. Visited the following Countries;
ā Canada ā (July ā August 1953) ā Japan (February 1954) ā Korea (Feburary 1954) ā England (July ā November 1956) ā Jamaica (January 1957) ā Mexico (February 1962)
72. Purchased her only home, 12305 Fifth Helena Drive on February 8th 1962, where she would tragically pass just under 6 months later.
73. The home had the following tile located on the front paving entrance saying, ācursum perficioā meaning, āmy journey ends here.ā The title is still there to this day.
74. Her final interview was published in LIFE Magazine on August 3rd 1962 and was written by Richard Meryman.
75. Aside from her millions of fans, had a staunch group of supporters affectionately known as, āThe Monroe Sixā who followed Marilyn around New York during her time there. Their nickname for Marilyn was, āMazzieā and they became so acquainted that Marilyn actually once invited them for a picnic at her home.
76. First married at just sixteen years old, this was to avoid returning to the Orphanage she had spent almost two years in as a child.
77. Supported numerous charity events, most famously riding a pink elephant in Madison Square Garden, to support the Arthritis and Rheumatic Affections Association on March 30th 1955.
78. Left 25% of her Estate to her then Psychiatrist, Marianne Kris and 75% to mentor and friend, Lee Strasberg. For reference, her Will was last updated on January 1961 ā a month before she entered the Payne Whitney Hospital on the advice of Marianne Kris.
79. At the time of itās release, The Misfits (1961) turned out to be the most expensive black and white movie ever made, costing a budget of $4 million dollars.
80. The Premiere of The Seven Year Itch was held on her 29th Birthday, on June 1st 1955, she attended with ex Husband, Joe Dimaggio.
81. Laid to rest at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery on August 8th 1962 at 1:00 PM, with friend and mentor Lee Strasberg delivering the Eulogy.Ā
82. Although so often associated with diamonds, actually wasnāt that fond of jewellery stating, āPeople always ask me if I believe diamonds are a girlās best friend. Frankly, I donāt.āĀ
83. Spent her 36th Birthday filming Somethingās Got To Give (1962) and then attending a Charity Event for muscular dystrophy at the Chavez Ravin Dodger Stadium, which also happened to be her last public appearance.
84. Whilst recovering in hospital from an appendectomy in April 1952, Marilyn asked long time Makeup Artist and friend, Allan āWhiteyā Snyder to do her makeup, should she pass before him. She gave him a gold money clip with the inscription, āWhitey Dear, while Iām still warm, Marilynā and he did fulfill this promise to her.
85. Converted to Judaism for third husband, Arthur Miller on July 1st 1956.
86. Despite appearing in 30 films, she only actually dies in one, that being her breakout movie, Niagara (1953) where her character Rose Loomis, is strangled by her Husband George, played by Joseph Cotten.
87. Moved to New York City in 1955 and attended The Actors Studio, after breaking her Film Contract with 20th Century Fox. This was for a number of reasons, mainly years of low pay, unsatisfactory scripts and lack of creative control. A new contract would finally be reinstated on December 31st.
88. Repurchased a white Baby Grand Piano that her mother, Gladys, owned during their time living together in 1933. After Marilyn passed it would then be sold at the Christies Auction of her Estate in 1999 to none other than, Mariah Carey for $632,500.
89. Wore long hair pieces in River of No Return (1954) and a medium length wig in The Misfits (1961). The first I can only assume was due to the time period and setting of a Western and the second was due to the bleach damage her hair had suffered. After the filming in 1960, she wore the wig a couple of times in public events and then reverted back to her normal hair.
90. Like all students, it was tradition to perform in front of each other in The Actors Studio and on February 17th 1955, Marilyn acted out a scene from āAnna Christieā with Maureen Stapleton. Although it was an unwritten rule that students were not meant to applaud one another, an eruption of cheers and clapping happened after Marilyn had finished.
āEverybody who saw that says that it was not only the best work Marilyn ever did, it was some of the best work ever seen at Studio, and certainly the best interpretation of Anna Christie anybody ever saw. She achieved real greatness in that scene.ā
ā Actor Ellen Burstyn, on recalling Marilynās performance.
91. Used the pseudonym, āZelda Zonkā, when trying to remain incognito.
92. Marilynās mother, Gladys Baker, suffered from Paranoid Schizophrenia and after various stays in institutions, was declared insane on January 15th 1935, when Marilyn was just 8 years old. After 10 years she was released and managed to retain various cleaning jobs and had developed an intense interest in Christian Science. However, by 1951 she was back in various institutions and would stay in the Rockhaven Sanitarium until 1967. Even after death, Marilyn continued to cover her motherās care payments and Gladys would go on to outlive her for 22 years.
93. Favourite photograph of herself was taken by Cecil Beaton on February 22nd 1956.
94. Last professional photos were taken by Bert Stern, famously known as āThe Last Sittingā for Vogue Magazine on June 23rd, July 10th and 12th 1962. Allan Grant took the LIFE Magazine interview pictures in her home, on July 4th and 9th 1962. Whilst George Barris took his photos for Cosmopolitan Magazine, the previous weekend on the 29th and 30th of June, until July 1st 1962. ______________________________________________________________________________
To those of you who took the time to read through all 3000+ words, thank you! It truly means more to me than you know and I really hope itās shed some light on the truly special person Marilyn was and made you hold a good thought for her on her big day.

Summary:Ā When Tup murdered General Tiplar during a battle, Anakin Skywalker and Captain Rex dispatched Ahsoka, Fives, and Yara to solve the mystery that was plaguing the Clone Army. Meanwhile, Senator Padme Amidala contacted Commander Fox, Commander Tori, Riyo Chuchi, and Dipper to help her continue investigating the death of Palpatine, suspecting that Dooku was behind the evil plot. But when Dooku send an ISB agent to stop them, the team had to race against time to search for the truth, which could alter the course of the galaxy.

āHow long till we reach the checkpoint, general?ā Thire asked, standing in front of him.
āWeāll reach there in half an hour,ā Raul answered, glancing at the holomap of Mendes. From what heās gathered so far, there were millions of people living there and were protected by the main city gate. The entire purpose was to protect the citizens from wild animals, though they were lucky enough to not encounter any of them.
Out of all the terrains he explored in his lifetime, the tropical jungle was his least favourite. Besides the irritating blood-sucking insects and intense humid air, Raul was often told that the jungle was a good place for people to get lost and never be seen ever again. His mother would say that the spirits living in the jungle handle peopleās disappearance, but he felt it was the wild beasts that may have caused it.
In his childhood, Raul dreamed about living in a tropical climate and building a treehouse with Erina. Unfortunately, during his first experience as a Scout, he changed his mind. He decided that the jungle wasnāt for him and wished to live in a tundra-like climate instead, where everything was peaceful.
Mina analysed the map over and over and wondered about the main city gate, which was guarded by the Imperial droids. āGeneral,ā she spoke, raising her hand. āI donāt want to sound stupid, but whatās with the large gate, anyway? Was that necessary?ā
āThe entire purpose was to protect the inhabitants of wild animals at night,ā Raul smiled. āItās been there since the city was built, but the Empire took advantage of that protection and turned it into a tool of oppression instead.ā
āThatās terrible,ā she remarked. āIām sure the people of Hocura are confined to their miserable lives.ā
āFrom what Iāve heard, there are lots of things to do on Hocura, but I agree with you, commander. People were doing well before the Empire showed up on their doorsteps.ā
Stoneās fist clenched as he heard Raul and Minaās conversation. āWeāll defeat the Imps once we reach there.ā
Raul chuckled. āThatās the spirit, trooper. Weāll do everything we can to destroy the power generator without letting innocent civilians die.ā
āI agree, general,ā Thire said, holding his weapon. āThe last thing we want is the Empire blaming us for the death tolls of civilians. Whatever weāre doing now is now being weaponized by the Emperor to make us look bad.ā
āThatās the whole point of propaganda,ā Mina said. āIt paints our opponents as the villains. Iām sure the Republic is guilty of that too, not that Iām against our forces, of course.ā
Nygma raised her eyebrows. āNo one is saying that to you, commander.ā
āI know, but just in case you guys have doubts about me, I have to assure you I am on your side just to calm you down.ā
āThat sounds exactly like what a traitor would say.ā
āRelax, Nygma,ā the other Mina spoke out. āWeāve been fighting side-by-side for years now. There is no way she would betray us after what we went through together. Besides, when was the last time you slept, anyway?ā
He let out a sigh, rubbing his eyes. āHow can I sleep when you have the same nightmares over and over again?ā
She nodded, her lips pressed together. āI know that feeling, too. I even started losing count on how many of those nightmares I had, you know.ā
Thire and Stone joined in the conversation, relating to their similar experience. āWe also had that kind of dream every night, too. Why do you think we Corrie Guards do night duty in the first place?ā
āBut of course, since we had a new boss, we had to re-experience the same thing when we dozed off.ā
āCorrect me if Iām wrong,ā Commander Mina raised her hand. āBut was it the nightmare where we killed a Jedi and we couldnāt do anything about it?ā
āBingo,ā Nygma fingered a gun at her. āThat dream was the reason I woke up in the middle of the night.ā
āKeep it down, or the general will hear us,ā Stone hissed, gesturing to the both of them.
But Raul was listening to their conversation. From what he knows about dreams, they were common among sentient beings as it is part of their brain processing when they were asleep. He knew also that nightmares are normal and dreams about being chased or falling down recur from time-to-time. But dreaming about killing a Jedi every night was intriguing for him, and he wants to learn more about their problems.
āSo, what were you talking about?ā Raul asked, his legs crossed.
Thire and Mina darted eyes with each other as Nygma glanced away from the general, focusing on the blank wall instead. For a moment, the general checked on his gloved hands as he waited for at least one of them to break the awkward silence between them. The other Mina turned to Stone, who was wiping his helmet, wondering if she should say something to Raul. The last thing she wanted was to keep him waiting.
After what seemed to be forever, the other Mina decided to do the honours. āWe were just having a small talk with each other, thatās all.ā
āAre you sure, Mina?ā Raul gave her a delicate smile. āThe long silence was rather telling, if you asked me.ā
āItās personal between us clones,ā Thire convinced, clearing his throat. āYou wouldnāt understand anyway, no offence.ā
āNone taken, Thire. Besides, I majored in psychology in college, so I know a few things about dreams and how it can mirror our making moments, you know.ā
āThatās really interesting, general,ā Mina chuckled, feeling her sweat pouring from her forehead. āBut weāre good, so thanks, anyway.ā
Before Raul could say anything, Beetle called from the driverās seat, prompting him to get up from his seat. āWeāll be having this discussion after our mission is completed.ā
Thire nodded as he watched him walk away. His heart was pounding, realizing that no matter what, Raul will insist on talking about their nightmares. The fact that the general referred to him by his first name was odd, since Palpatine never did that.
āDoes the general always call you by your first name?ā he asked Commander Mina, tapping on her shoulder.
āYeah, he does,ā she bobbed her head. āBut in my case, he had to address me by my rank since thereās another vodāika with the exact name as mine.ā
Turning to the other Mina, she glared at her, crossing her arms. The other Mina stretched her lips, hiding her hands. āIn my defense, I didnāt expect to be in the same battalion with you.ā
āWhy not change to a different name instead?ā Stone placed his hands on his waist. āItās really confusing when thereās two clones in the same battalion with the same name.ā
āThe name was stuck already and besides, Mina was the only name I could think of.ā
āWell then, I canāt argue with the name Mina.ā
As they were laughing, Raul approached them with a stiff face, ready to give them new orders. āWeāre almost to the city of Mendes. Get into position, all of you.ā
āYes, general,ā Nygma acknowledged, as he and the rest of his siblings put on their helmet, loading their blasters.
The cityās gate was made from stone, which was covered with cushiony moss and spotty mushrooms. The general stood between Beetle and Bouncy, who were piloting the Imperial Troop Transport, observing the two B1 battle droids guarding the front door to the Hocuran city. *This looks like a piece of cake.*
The transport stopped in front of the gate and allowed the droids to inspect their vehicle without suspicion. Nygma and the other Mina waited as the rest of the 197th and the Corrie Guards were still as a lake. The moment the droids stepped inside, Commander Mina and Thire blasted them into bits, lasting for two seconds.
Nygma and the other Mina stepped out of the vehicle and searched through the Imperial checkpoint. The latter grabbed a clipper and cut the wires from the radio while the former pressed the button, signalling to the troops that they were all clear.
Heading back inside, the duo met Raul, whose lips were curled upwards. āYou guys did great out there. Well done, Iām proud of you both.ā
āIt was nothing, general,ā Nygma shrugged it off. āBesides, this is only the easy part. We havenāt gotten to the hard part yet.ā
āYouāre right,ā Commander Mina agreed. āWe have a long way to go before we defeat the Empire on Hocura.ā
āWe should contact General Kenobi and General Almarez-Guttierez,ā Thire suggested.
āGood thinking, Commander,ā Raul said. āLet them know that we have opened the cityās gate.ā
āSir, yes, sir.ā

Layers
Layer 1: The Basics
Name: Since thereāve been several people whoāve followed me recently anyway, HI Iām Robyn.
Age: 23.
Birthday: April 21st.
Gender: Female.
Zodiac Sign: Taurus.
Layer 2: Your Family
Do you have any brothers or sisters? Yes, I have one of each.
Do you have any pets? Yup, two dogs.
Do you still live with your parents? I do. Iām not in a rush.
Do you have any stepparents? Nope.
How many cousins do you have? 11 first cousins. Throwing my second cousins into the mix would dramatically increase the number and I donāt feel like counting rn.
Layer 3: Your Friends
Who is your best friend? Angela and Andi.
Who have you been friends with the longest? Angela and I have been friends for 16 years and itās stronger as ever these days because of our mutual love for BTS hehe.
What do you like to do with your friends? It really depends! Thereās no one thing I like doing most with any of them; as long as Iām with them Iād consider it time well spent.
Do you have more friends online or in real life? Real life. Itās hard to form friendships online once nearly everyone starts becoming younger than you.
What is a good way to make friends with others? One thing I learned is that you have to be okay to initiate, and thatās not really something I like doing all the time.
Layer 4: Your Home
Do you live in a home, apartment, duplex, trailer, etc? I live in a house.
How many rooms are there in your house? There are 4 bedrooms and 5 other kinds of rooms ā thatās 2 bathrooms, the living room, dining room, and kitchen.
Is your home large or small? Iād say itās medium-sized. Itās not small that I feel cramped or inadequate, but itās also nowhere near a mansion. Itās very comfortable for a family of 5.
What is your favorite room in your house, and why? Rooftop. My family barely goes there (and what a shame they donāt), so itās a nice place to go to when I want to be alone but canāt get out of the house. Not to mention that itās open-air and windy there, so whenever I feel as if Iām getting cooked inside I can always depend on the rooftop.
Do you prefer having people over to your house, or would you rather go to theirs? Iād rather go to theirs. Our house is really deep into the village and is a challenge to get to, especially if youāre unfamiliar with the general area.
Layer 5: Can You
Can you fold your tongue into the taco shape? Yes, but thatās the furthest it can go. I canāt really bend or twist it into shapes more complex than that.
Can you touch your toes without bending your knees? Nah, I lost that ability years ago. I didnāt make the most out of my flexibility back when I still had it.
Can you tie a cherry stem in a knot with your tongue? I never tried.
Can you hold up your end of a physical fight? I bet I canāt.
Can you do any yo-yo tricks? No, I was always terrible at the yo-yo.
Layer 6: Who
Who inspires you the most, and why? I donāt have any ~inspirations. I do like looking up to whoever my current obsession is ā be it Rhett and Link, Paramore, BTS, etc. ā to help me be happy and have something to smile at, but I try not to let any of them govern every single aspect of my life.
Who helps you maintain your sanity? My best friends. And these days, surprise surprise! ā BTS.
Who do you go to most often for advice? Depends on the topic; I always run to either of my best friends. If I need a collective opinion, I go to my college friend groupās group chat.
Who knows you better than you know yourself? At one point it had been Gabie, but *shrug* Nowadays, the person who knows me best would probably be Andi.
Who is someone that you would die or put your life on the line for, no questions asked? Any of my friends.
Layer 7: Do you
Do you still eat sandwiches without the crusts? Nah - Iāve grown to be a fan of the crusts. I used to make my grandma slice them off as a kid or else I wouldnāt even think of touching the sandwich; then something changed as I got older and now I absolutely have to have the crust. At home, I even call dibs on the first and last pieces of bread (the ones that are all crust) whenever we get a new pack of sliced bread.
Do you typically finish your meal at a restaurant, or need to take a container home? I usually ask for it to be packed up for takeout.
Do you pull an Oreo apart in order to eat it? No, I just bite into it.
Do you read a lot of gossip magazines? As a kid/teenager. Iām over that now.
Do you make friends easily? Iām not the biggest social butterfly, but Iām also not super closed off. Iāll be happy to talk to anyone who approaches me.
Layer 8: How Many?
How many people live in your house with you? Four.
How many pets have you had in your lifetime? In my lifetime...I guess a good rough estimate would be somewhere around 10? Iāll never know exactly how many weāve had since I never kept track of how many goldfish we kept.
How many tries does it take you to become successful at something? Depends. I never learned how to ride a bike even if Iāve pushed myself to practice ever since I was 5, but there are other things Iām able to pick up easily.
How many meals do you eat a day? One, dinner.
How many people can you honestly tolerate? This isnāt really an issue to me haha, I like being around people and my patience around them is usually long.
Layer 9: How
How do you typically get to school or work? I work from home at the moment and probably would for a little while longer; but if things were different, I would be driving myself.
How do you deal with a breakup? When I was going through mine, I was stupidly stubborn at first and refused any form of help. I deactivated all my social media and shut both my best friends out; it even got to a point where mutual friends were beginning to ask Andi where Iāve been as Iāve ādisappeared off the face of the Earthā (an actual quote they relayed to me). I cried day in and day out, cried during my shifts, stayed holed up in my room; and I skipped hundreds of meals, sometimes not eating all day. It wasnāt a good place to be in.
But I knew I was on the right path to recovering the moment I reached out to friends again and acknowledged that I needed help. I started to help myself, too; I cut the person off slowly, and I started to look for new things to get into, new hobbies to invest in. I let my friends give me tough love and show me the reality of my situation, and I listened this time around. I donāt know what drove me to make a sudden change in my life but Iām really glad I came around to the decision, because Iām happier than ever these days.
How do you like to help others? All sorts of ways. I always want to make othersā lives a little easier.
How do you know when youāve found āthe oneā? I donāt trust that instinct anymore.
How do you sleep in bed? On my side, clutching a pillow. No pillow to hug, no sleep.
Layer 10: What
What do you think happens when we die? That I just fall asleep for a very long time.
What do you do if thereās no toilet paper left on the roll and youāre already peeing? Turn around and hope there is at least a bidet in the stall.
What do you eat most often? Rice.
What toys did you enjoy most as a child? Anything with a lot of buttons or features to play around with, like detailed dollhouses.
What do you do if you witness someone being awful to someone else? Intervene, for the most part.
Layer 11: Where
Where is your favorite place to eat out? BGC has great ambience and restaurant choices, but itās been a while since Iāve been there. I also still feel weird about the place since Gabie and I had dates there pretty often, sooooo I really ought to make new memories there with new people once I can.
Where is the place that has the best ice cream in your area? We donāt really have places known for ice cream...most people just buy pints or tubs of them at the grocery lol.
Where did you meet your current or last significant other? School.
Where can you be found at 7 PM. typically? Wrapping up work in my room.
Where can you find the best French fries? Potato Corner.
Layer 12: When
When did you find out the truth about Santa, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy? Never believed in the first two. Tooth Fairy I lost hope in when I placed a tooth under my pillow when I was around 6 or 7 and woke up to nothing.
When do you typically fall asleep? Early hours of the morning tbh. Iād sleep anywhere between 1-4 AM these days.
When was the last time that someone paid you a compliment? Kata and I often make sure to compliment one another for our hard work by the end of particularly grueling shifts.
When do you feel most comfortable? Friday nights when Iām sure I can finally close my work group chats for the next two days.
When did you last go to the bathroom? Around an hour or so ago.
Layer 13: Why
Why do you enjoy taking surveys so much? Itās a stress reliever that has never failed me, and it lets me answers quirky random questions no one would ever have to ask me.
Why do people gossip so much? For one, probably the thrill of knowing something that's meant to be a thing.
Why canāt humans fly? It wouldnāt have been a necessity, Iām guessing.
Why arenāt you doing something else right now? Because I just spent the last 24 hours streaming Butter on Spotify and YouTube to raise views and plays for the boys, and taking this survey is actually the first thing Iāve done all day after taking a quick nap this afternoon to recover from all the streaming I did hahaha.
Why is the sky blue? I donāt know.
Layer 14: Ifā¦
If you had a million dollars, what would you spend it on? Buy chocolate chips because Iām craving them rn; get all BTS merch in one go; give a chunk to my parents; keep the rest.
If you found out someone was cheating on you, would you ever take them back? I donāt really have consistency when it comes to this situation. I know I definitely wouldāve been stupid enough to stay with Gab if she hypothetically cheated on me while we were still together; Iām not sure if Iād stay when it comes to another person entirely.
If you found a wallet with cash in the street, including identification, would you turn it in? Why or why not? Yeah, Iād look for the owner. Iām not that desperate for money, personally.
If you could have any food right now, what would you like? Ā SUSHI.
If you found out that the world was going to end tomorrow, how would you spend your last day? Go to the mall and get some much-needed air, then probably drop off some japchae and tteokbokki at Angelaās place.
Layer 15: Firsts
When did you lose your first tooth? I was in Prep and it actually fell out while I was in school. We were having storytime and I had to interrupt the session to tell my teacher it was starting to feel loose, so she got me some tissues to help me get it out.
Who was your first teacher that you ever had? Her name was Kathy. I donāt really have any substantial memories of her because I was 4 lmao, but I know she was nice.
When did you first learn how to ride a bike? ...Still learning...
When was the first time you had sex? Like a day or two after turning 18.
Did your first birthday have a theme to it? Not necessarily but my parents threw me a party at Jollibee, so it kinda had to be Jollibee-themed lol.
Layer 16: Lasts
Last person you texted: I donāt feel like checking because it was most definitely a work-related text and I donāt want to be reminded of work on a Sunday, but it was a media person.Ā
Last drink you sipped: The last of my coffee.
Last time you rode a bike: Like, March last year when the pandemic had still been fresh and I thought I could use all the free time to finally learn how to ride a bike. Absolute clownery.
Last time you swam in a pool: August 2019.
Last person you hugged: Not sure. Angela, I think.
Layer 17: Favorites
Favorite Color: I think pastel pink is still taking the lead for me.
Favorite Season: We donāt have the usual four seasons, but I do have a liking for winter. It just seems very cozy for me.
Favorite Shape: I donāt have one.
Favorite Letter: Mmmmm, donāt really have one of these either.
Favorite Number: 4 or 7.
Layer 18: This or That
Pepsi or Coke? I donāt drink softdrinks.
Movies or Television? Movies, but I havenāt really been watching much of either recently.
Phone or Tablet? Phone. Havenāt used a tablet in yearrrrrsssssss.
Fruits or Vegetables? Veggies. Hate fruits.
Animals or Humans? I think I like both an equal amount.
Layer 19: Which
Which Pokeāmon is your favorite? Chikorita.
Which day of the week is your favorite? Friday, because of course.
Which birthday celebration was the most memorable for you? My 18th, even though out of all the friends I celebrated my birthday with I only have one of them left in my life. I know I was happy during that time so I wouldnāt invalidate that experience for myself.
Which holiday is your favorite? Christmas, only for the sheer amount of food I get to have.
Which shoe do you put on first? I always switch it up, Iām pretty sure. I donāt have a particular habit.
Layer 20: Love Life/Relationships
What is the name of your first love? Gabie.
How many times can you honestly say youāve been in love? Once.
Have you ever been in a relationship before that was abusive in any way? After being able to take a step back and analyzing it deeper, yes.
Have you ever been engaged or married before? Nope.
Do you have any children? I donāt.
Layer 21: Jobs, Dreams, & Goals
What did you want to be when you grew up (as a little kid)? I couldnāt decide among being an astronaut, firefighter, or veterinarian.
What do you aspire to be now? What interests you? I realized I wanted to be in the field of media and public relations, and thatās where I am now. I like being able to use my writing skills for something I find fun and fulfilling, instead of rotting away in a newsroom writing news Iām usually too sensitive for.
What is the most recent goal youāve achieved? I got regularized! :)
What is a goal you are still striving to reach? A salary increase would be nice, and then a promotion down the road would also be awesome.
Have you ever won any sort of awards before? If so, for what? Sure. I was consistently on the honor roll in college and graduated with Latin honors, if those count as awards.
Layer 22: Opinions & Beliefs
Pro-life or pro-choice? Pro-choice.
Were you raised with any sort of religious background? If so, then what? Yesss, I was and am raised in a Catholic household. Weirdly enough my parents have grown more laidback in the last few years and my mom no longer berates us for not doing the sign of the cross when we pray before eating (my siblings have taken after me and refuse to do it as well). No idea what sparked that change but Iām just glad I never have to do gestures like that one anymore.
Democrat, Republican, or Independent? We donāt have the same parties here.
For or against the death penalty? This is a very complicated web and for reasons largely relevant to my country and the issues we have, I am mostly against it.
Thoughts on assisted suicide? I am ok with it as long as there is consent involved.Ā
Layer 23: Currently/Today/Present

Ranking : Spike Lee (1957 - present)
There have been countless directors whose careers have spanned my lifetime, but out of these countless masses, the one whom I can find the most in common ground with (as well as endless inspiration from) is Spike Lee.Ā A New YorkerĀ through and through, Lee went from a series of films that seamlessly blended hip-hop and old schoolĀ HollywoodĀ aesthetics, to personal films, to his take on the blockbuster, and currently, to the point where his canon has earned him artistic freedom and expression that many of his peers have not been able to achieve.Ā He is the perfect bridge between the director-driven mindset of the 1970s and the cultural boundary-pushing films of the 1990s-forward.Ā Not everything that he directed was a hit or a masterpiece, but this man has more iconic films under his belt that some directors have films to their name.Ā That being said, itās time to stir the pot and make an attempt at the monumental task that is ranking the films of Spike Lee.
I will only be including theatrically released feature films of Spike Lee that I have seen.Ā His documentary work will be excluded, as well as his films I have missed or have yet to see.Ā Here is a list of these films : Da 5 Bloods, Chi-Raq, Da Sweet Blood of Jesus, Joeās Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads, 4 Little Girls, The Original Kings of Comedy, When the Levees Broke, A Huey P. Newton Story.Ā
20. Oldboy (2013) Every film that you make canāt be a winner.Ā In the case of Leeās attempt at remaking Oldboy, there were already two major strikes against it : a superior version of the film already existed, and that version was the middle film of a trilogy.Ā I doubt that even a team of the most talented directors could have made a superior version of Oldboy that surpassed the original, but after 30 years of making films, itās admirable that Lee would even attempt something so bold and seemingly insurmountable.Ā Ā
19. Red Hook Summer (2012) When your film catalog covers three decades, thereās bound to be some overlap, be it stylistically or narratively.Ā Iāve only seen Red Hook Summer once, but it was impossible for me to look at it subjectively, as it seemed to be a modern day mirror to another one of Leeās explorations of New York adolescence.Ā While this story is not a direct copy of a Spike Lee film that I will go into more detail on later, it does feel like the update equivalent that focuses on himself rather than the childhood of his sister.Ā While an entertaining film from what I can remember, it sits behind a list of previous impressive achievements.
18. She Hate Me (2004) Humor has been an element present in a number of Spike Lee films, but for my moneyās worth, this film is the closest thing to an outright comedy that he ever made.Ā Like a number of films on the back half of his career, he is touching upon important topics (sexuality and toxic masculinity, in this case), but these are topics that he has hit with more nuance and creativity in earlier films.Ā This film did help transition Anthony Mackie into a leading man role, and he certainly took that opportunity and ran with it, so She Hate Me could be heralded for that alone.Ā That being said, it was a great idea that slightly missed the mark, therefore placing it on the backend of the memorable films list for Lee.
17. Miracle at St. Anna (2008) This film had the potential to be a breakout resurgence for Spike Lee.Ā He was coming hot off the heels of Inside Man, a perfect blend of LeeāsĀ style and modern HollywoodĀ fare, so having a period-piece war film seemed like a slam dunk.Ā His cast was strong, while also being filled of relatively unknown young actors on the verge of becoming stars in their own right, but for whatever reason, this film failed to make a connection with the masses.Ā While I do remember mostly enjoying my watch, I also remember feeling a bit underwhelmed by the ending, which in turn left me lacking a reason to revisit it.Ā Maybe itās a hidden gem that I havenāt seen enough times yet, but at this moment in time, its home is near the bottom of LeeāsĀ impressive list of films.
16. Get on the Bus (1996) Many peopleās eyes were opened to racial injustices during the COVID-19 pandemic, as several African-American men and women found themselves on the wrong end of violent acts from the police and other citizens in the midst of aĀ āshelter-in-placeā era.Ā Not only have these injustices been going on for my entire lifetime, but theyāve been a generational trauma for many African-AmericansĀ in the United States.Ā When the Million Man March was announced in 1996, it was not surprising that Spike Lee took it as an opportunity to both document the march and build a narrative around it in which he could showcase a collection of actors heād either featured in past films or would work with in future films.Ā To my knowledge, this is one of maybe two or three films about the event, and it was certainly the film released in the closest proximity to it.Ā For an independent, quick shoot, it definitely stands up, but in comparison to Leeās other works that benefited from full crews and production schedules, it finds itself paling in comparison.
15.Ā BlacKkKlansman (2018) Despite the fact that this is the film that finally got Lee some sort of recognition at the Oscars, BlacKkKlansman was not quite the true return to form that many fans ofĀ Spike Lee expected.Ā The film had moments of humor, compelling moments that directly focused on racial injustice and systematic oppression, and it pulled no punches while doing so.Ā Like a handful of Leeās other films, however, this one falls when compared to his other films that deal with similar subject matter.Ā Adam Driver continued to show fans his expansive range, andĀ Jasper Paakonen deserved INFINITELY more recognition than he got, but ultimately, this film checks all theĀ āgoodā boxes where it was expected to check theĀ āgreatā ones.
14. 25th Hour (2002) As the year 2000 approached, Lee seemed to attempt and make a shift from films that specifically spoke on aspects of the African-American experience in favor of occasional films that reached a wider audience.Ā While Summer of Sam would be considered the first foray into that realm, the true mark of this elevated sense of creative duty came in the form of 25th Hour.Ā With the actors in tow, in tandem with the cinematography and skilled directing ability displayed in the film, one would expect a powerhouse movie, but ultimately, the expectations exceeded the narrative of this film.Ā This one is entertaining, donāt get me wrong, but I personally did not find a connection with the story, meaning that the film was, at best, fun to watch.
13. Summer of Sam (1999)Ā Iāve been a true-crime junkie since my early teenage years, and even the most casual of true-crime fans is more than likely familiar with David Berkowitz, also known to many as the Son of Sam.Ā While Red Hook Summer did come out after Summer of Sam, itād be hard to deny the fact that Summer of Sam is the last of Leeās love letters to New York City.Ā This was the film where Spike Lee stepped out of his comfort zone of the African-American experience, choosing instead to focus on more colloquial aspects of the American experience, and for my moneyās worth, it was the start of an important shift for him.Ā Despite being light on the Son of Sam action, the actors this film does focus on (and the story it chooses to tell) is a fresh look at a familiar era, and a crowning achievement that signaled new things for Spike Lee.
12.Ā He Got Game (1998) If you made a Venn diagram of people familiar with Spike Lee, the two biggest circles would be film fans and people who have seen at least one New York KnicksĀ game since the 1990s.Ā Therefore, the only thing that was really and truly surprising about He Got Game was the fact that it took Spike Lee 15 years and 11 films to make a film about basketball.Ā On the outset, thatās exactly what it is : a film about basketball.Ā Viewed with a wider lens, however, this story is a love letter to one of the most popular American inventions, and a story about how it can serve as a common-ground bridge for those from wholly different walks of life.Ā The juxtaposition of Aaron Copland and Public Enemy made the soundtrack provocative, and Ray AllenĀ stood out in his lead role, holding his own against the living legend that is Denzel Washington, who is always good for a stellar performance in a Spike Lee joint.Ā Donāt mistake this filmās place on the list for my feelings about it... this is a stellar film, in my opinion, and one of my favorites to revisit.
11. Crooklyn (1994) After making what many would argue to be the most important film of his career (which we will eventually get to), itās no surprise that Spike Lee circled his creative wagons and made the focus of his next film inward.Ā Crooklyn covers what seem like many personal bases for Spike Lee : he portrays the New York of the past vividly and beautifully, while spinning a true-to-life tale based on his personal experience, but opting to focus on his sister Joie LeeĀ and his father Bill Lee.Ā Of Leeās many, many films, this was the one that I felt the most compelled to see at the time of release, it is one of the two I have the most vivid memories and recollections of, and it has a number of stylistic choices that keep me wonderfully perplexed to this day.Ā Despite not cracking the top ten Spike Lee films, this one ranks high on the list of Spike Lee films that hit the bullseye of my heart.
10. Jungle Fever (1991) Interracial romance is one of those things that seemingly will always be a sensitive subject.Ā Iāve heard many people say that Jungle Fever has a dated look on the subject, but Iād argue that the film was very forward thinking, especially in showing that an interracial romance is not the answer to the cultural and societal problems that life presents us.Ā The movie also touches deeply on drug addiction without crossing over into the realm of being preachy or talking down to the viewer.Ā It didnāt hurt that Stevie Wonder also managed to create a soundtrackās worth of new material that instantly brought the seemingly controversial film directly into the public eye.Ā Maybe it is dated... maybe it is uncomfortable... but what it is, undoubtedly, is an early masterpiece that fell near the end of one of the most stellar introductory runs that any filmmaker has presented us.
9. Clockers (1995) Ever wonder what would happen if a Martin Scorsese film found its way into the hands of Spike Lee?Ā Well, wonder no longer, because Clockers is out there waiting for you to discover it.Ā The amount that this movie gets slept on is an outright tragedy and travesty.Ā The soundtrack is KILLER, the color-timing puts the viewer in an immediateĀ ācold-worldā environment, the order of operations presented in this film is brutal and unforgiving, and yet, it manages to be one of the most heartfelt films in the Spike Lee canon.Ā EVERYONE presented in this movie brought their A-game to the table, from the Spike Lee regulars like Isaiah Washington, John Turturro and Harvey Keitel, to the glorified cameos and supporting roles, like Thomas Jefferson Byrd, Sticky Fingaz and Fredro of Onyx, and relative newcomer but promising leading man Makhi Phifer.Ā This film is intense, but it is more than worth your time and attention.
8. Bamboozled (2000) Bamboozled was shocking when it was released, to say the least.Ā The true revelation, however, has been the way that relevance has seemingly caught up to the film... fake wokeness, modern day minstrel shows, low budget/high yield television and behind the scenes scandals have all come to light many years after this film had its initial run.Ā While this film did not transition Savion Glover into the world of superstardom and crossover success, it certainly crystalized his immense talent and charisma in a way that his recordings of stage shows had previously been unable to capture.Ā The imagery of Americaās strange fascination with the dehumanization of African-AmericansĀ for generation after generation is rich, and every performance is compelling.Ā This was definitely Spike Leeās first masterpiece of the new millennium, and at the risk of being bittersweet, probably one of his last truly stunning achievements.
7. Girl 6 (1996) Every ranking list has to have the controversial placement, so hereās mine... Girl 6Ā started as a lingering interest for me.Ā The internet was just about to change the world, but we were still locked into landlines at the time, with cellular being a luxury, so the world of phone sex still had relevance.Ā Upon seeing the film, however, I quickly realized that the phone sex exploration was playing counter to a Hollywood hopeful narrative that was brave enough to explore new ground (per the changing times) while being mindful enough to pay homage to the countless stories of Hollywood hopefuls that came before it.Ā Many of the shifting cinematography looks that made ClockersĀ so gritty were used to make Girl 6 feel dangerously euphoric.Ā The list of cameos and brief supporting roles were not only a whoās who of cultural movers and shakers at the time, but it ran about as long as my arm.Ā I recently revisited the film and expected it to be a bit more on the side of kitsch, but surprisingly, the times had not been as hard on the film as I anticipated.Ā The film shifts quite well between light and dark, and even the ending that initially slightly annoyed me has found a strange sort of charm in my older, more life-experienced years.Ā Add to this the hilarious running joke of Isaiah WashingtonĀ being a kleptomaniac in nearly every scene he appears in, and thereās a realization that there are sublayers going on right in front of our eyes.Ā This collaboration with Suzan-Lori Parks gives me hope that maybe one day, weāll get a Spike Lee film adaptation of Topdog/Underdog, but we will see.
6. Inside Man (2006) If you had to pick the mostĀ āHollywoodā of the Spike Lee films, my money would be on this film ending up as the chosen one.Ā By this rationale, it makes the film that much more impressive, as it also stands out as one of the most compelling, well-directed and well-acted Spike Lee films.Ā At the time of its release, it was not only a return to form, but it seemed to signal an evolution.Ā Spike Lee was able to use his signature, iconic shots that he was known for, like his camera-turned-to-dolly float, or the push-pull zooms, but he was also able to incorporate familiar HollywoodĀ tropes, including the twist ending, and give them a breath of fresh air via an newly infused sense of style.Ā Lee also stayed true to himself by educating as well as entertaining, bringing to light how atrocities from the past have more than historical connections to modern day benefactors.Ā While I do think there are a handful of betterĀ āpureā Spike LeeĀ films, if I had to pick one movie for a curious party that my be skeptical, this would easily be my pick.
5. She's Gotta Have It (1986) Oh, the joy of having your first film be a breakout success, but not to the point of pigeon-holing your career.Ā Sheās Gotta Have It was an important introductory step to the masses for Spike LeeĀ : it showed his dedication to putting African-American performers into familiar narratives, it showed an appreciation for the voice of women on film that many first-time directors would likely not want to be the initial association to their style, it introduced the world to Mars BlackmonĀ (who became a cultural icon), and it presented sense of style that switched on the viewer the moment before they could label it pretentious.Ā Having characters address the camera made it feel like a play or a novel, but when the film shifted into movie mode, the camera moved with the energy and grace of a performance artist or dancer, which in turn fed into the character development and narrative it presented.Ā As a bonus, the property found new life nearly 40 years later as a Netflix original series, introducing new generations to a modern day classic statement of feminism, and how it does not excuse bad behavior.
4. Mo' Better Blues (1990) Those familiar with Spike Leeās family know that he was raised by jazz bassist Bill Lee, who scored some of Spikeās early films.Ā By this rationale, it comes as no surprise that Lee could make such a rich, nuanced and heartfelt film about jazz music that serves as an allegory for the hurdles that beset those driven purely by passion.Ā The conversations about race, musical integrity and commercialism also work on both direct and symbolic levels, giving Moā Better Blues some of the highest repeat viewing value of any film in the Spike Lee canon.Ā The film also marked the first collaboration of Spike Lee and Denzel Washington, a combination that yielded artistic, career, creative, commercial and critical success, led to a multitude of classic performances, and ultimately led to a generational collaborative changing of the guard in the form of John David Washington.Ā The only negative I can give this film is that it did not lead to future films that explored genres of music like hip-hop and soul.Ā While Sheās Gotta Have It did focus heavily on relationships and intimacy, it could be argued that Moā Better Blues was Spike Leeās first adult contemporary film, and his first look at modern romance in the moreĀ ātraditionalā sense.
3. School Daze (1988) The African-American college experience, specifically that ofĀ HBCUsĀ (Historically Black College and Universitys), is one that has often been neglected in the annals of film history.Ā As a graduate of Clark Atlanta University, it makes total sense that Spike Leeās second commercial film would focus on that specifically overlooked culture, as it became a fitting vehicle for establishing Leeās sense of duty and responsibility for education, sharing the African-American experience to the masses, and exposing systematic injustices and hypocrisies that kep the disadvantaged in a disadvantaged position.Ā The real genius of this film, however, comes in the juxtaposition of presentations it jumps between... for the majority of the film, it is an unflinching look at the coming of age process that teenagers must traverse on their way to adulthood, including the hurdles of romance, forming your identity and expanding your view of the world around you.Ā At key moments, however, the film switches into musical numbers, song performances and school dances that not only expand on the inner feelings, emotions and desires of characters, but heighten the reality of the story to a dizzying pace.Ā In all the ways that Sheās Gotta Have It put the world on notice that a unique voice was present in the industry, School Daze signaled the continuation of a run that would last another handful of films, and it firmly established Spike Lee as a generational talent.Ā
2. Do the Right Thing (1989) I would guess that over the course of a career, a director secretly hopes that at least one of their works comes close to making an impact culturally.Ā In the case of Spike Lee, however, we have a man who released two cultural-shifting films, and did so in a span of less than 5 years.Ā They say the third time is a charm, and thatās exactly what Do the Right Thing was for Spike Lee.Ā The vivid colors, stylistic earmarks, historical and cultural sense of urgency and focus on telling minority stories all expanded greatly with this film, which acted as both a parable of how past injustices can come back to haunt you, and a harbinger of how the reactions to these continued injustices would only amplify if not addressed.Ā The fact that Spike Lee not only directed this film, but played the lead actor as well, is a monumental achievement, especially considering how few flaws the film has, if any.Ā Several established actors played some of their most iconic roles in this film, and a breadth of newer, younger faces exploded onto the scene, almost all of whom either continued to work with Lee or found themselves evolving their careers in the wake of Do the Right Thing.Ā The film is also directly responsible for perhaps the most iconic hip-hop song of all time, Public EnemyāsĀ classic protest anthem Fight The Power.Ā Any fan of film would be foolish to skip the Spike Lee catalog, but regardless of whether youāre interested in his work or not, this film is one of two he made that should flatly be considered required viewing across the board.Ā The other one, being...
1. Malcolm X (1992) For everything that Do the Right Thing did for Spike Lee and those involved in the production, the monumentally powerful biopic Malcolm X did all of that while also managing to humanize, canonize and create and icon out of a man that America tried its best to demonize.Ā The masterful hand that Lee used to direct this film shows, as this film is the mostĀ āevery frame a paintingā in his canon.Ā Everything from the period costuming to the locations to the dance numbers to the cinematography absolutely leaps off of the screen.Ā The editing is kinetic, the performances are full of life and depth, and the narrative does just enough going forwards and backwards to make proper connections without beating it over the head of the viewer.Ā The respect shown to Malcolm XĀ is massive, so much so that almost seemingly overnight, Malcolm X went from being a feared and often heavily criticized sign of aggressive blackness to a commercial commodity and household name, with the famous X suddenly adorning t-shirts, baseball caps and necklaces of all American youth, not just minorities.Ā The impact of this film was so immediate that many schools held field trips for viewings, which further cemented the immediate and historical value of the film.Ā Often, the connotation of saying someoneĀ āpeakedā for a film so early in their career would be negative, but the heights to which Malcolm X achieved on all fronts meant that even if the rest of Leeās career was a steady decline (which it certainly wasnāt), he more than likely still would have ended up in a pantheon far above that of the average director.
With projects reportedly in the early stages of development, it doesnāt look like Spike Lee has any plans on stopping anytime soon.Ā I certainly owe it to myself to see the handful of his films and documentaries that Iāve not seen yet... who knows, perhaps I may even go back one day and add the documentaries into the list, or find a surprise gem in one of his more recent movies Iāve yet to see.Ā Ā

Thank you for the tag @panlesters !! <3 iām not sure who has and hasnāt been tagged already but iāll tag the lovely @echoedvoices and anyone else who wants to join in :D
1. and when the whole world is watching
Walker is unhinged.
Itās apparent in the way his eyes are bulging from his head, the irritable twitch of his fingers, the thick pulse in his neck that strains against the pale of his skin like a snake writhing under bladed grass.
It was also apparent in the dark, red blood splatter on the once polished shield he held tightly in trembling hands.
2. the no manās land of my mind
Everything is cold. His body is tickled with it, his skin shivers as the icy breeze brushes past him, and when his muscles tense and constrict, thereās a dull ache; body used and underused in unison.
His head is throbbing, like his brain pulsating against the walls of his skull, banging like a tight skinned drum, desperate with each beat to escape itself.
3. the fox
āHeās gonna be sick.ā
Thereās a voice that feels both a million miles away as well as super close at the same time, like theyāre literally in his ear.
4. company policy
Thereās music thumping through the wall, faded and muted that makes it hard to hear the exact lyrics, but if Dan was to strain his ear, heās sure heās able to pinpoint what it is, since heās sure that recognising music is some kind of lame superhero power he has, but in all honesty, itās a little hard to concentrate with someone railing him from behind.
5. catboy roleplay thursdays
Thursdays, Phil decides, are for his time. After hours of watching Jenna Marbles videos, Phil soon becomes very accustomed to the phrase that becomes a household name signature in his house, āme time.ā
6. filters
Phil is sure heās probably wasted about eighty percent of his adult life on his phone. Between the endless scrolling through TikTok and the wormhole that is Snapchat clickbait news stories, Phil is pretty much glued to his phone, even when he knows he shouldnāt be. 7. king of packed lunches
āHow the hell do they make it look so good?ā
Philās back is aching, burning almost, as heās leant over the kitchen counter, squinting down at his phone as the TikTok replays again for what feels like the billionth time, the speedy hands of a mother perfecting what seems like the world's most incredible lunch box.
8. the fishermanās guide
A seagull soars across the sky. Its wings spread wide, momentarily paused against the blue as it glides through the air, not before it flaps its wings again. It passes through the sunlight, briefly shadowing the world for a moment in a blink of darkness.
9. an empty house
Numbness spreads across his body like heās been dunked in freezing cold water. Itās tingling in the tips of his fingers, burning fiercely in the soles of his feet, making him want to just run.
The police station is too loud. Itās too bright and itās too big and his heart is so heavy where it sits in his chest, it feels like a rock pulsing against his ribs, each beat and each out of sync pounding is like another dull ache there, spreading across each inch of his body until heās completely and utterly numb.
10. fall and iāll catch you
The early sunlight filters through the half pulled blinds of the bedroom window. It oozes all over the room, dancing against the walls and door, falling over items dotted around the teenagerās room. It floods over his body, the small warm feeling prickling against his skin, and when it comes to rest across his face, does it wake Peter up.
11. eight million
She sits by the phone, fingers trembling, her leg bounces with a bubble of anxiety that flows through her body, jolting every nerve in her body like hot electricity. He was supposed to be on the bus. He was supposed to be okay. But itās been half an hour since the world ended and she hasnāt heard from anyone.
12. thanatophobia
Itās a fear of dying. It burns itself into so many minds across the earth and universe. It lives, deep rooted for a lifetime, or is sparked to life early. Itās a bubbling anxiety that grows in the pit of your stomach and comes out in sleepless nights and heavy beating hearts. Itās a fear that canāt be faced.
13. familiar faces
Philās deep into a Mario Kart round when thereās a knock at the door, making him jump. He looks at the door, then back at the TV where heās slipped into eight place as Baby Peach absolutely totals him with a green shell thatā
The door knocks again, and Phil pauses his game, his own Mii frozen on the screen with a look that can only be described as utter disappointment as Phil turns away and heads towards the door.
14. end of the page
āThought? Feelings? Hate it, love it? Kinda wanna set fire to it?ā
Philās shoulders are shaking with a silent laugh as he takes the mug from Danās offering hand, bringing the rim of the mug to his lips as he takes a long, slow sip. Honey flavoured tea, his favourite.
15. coming home
The key in the lock seems to echo so loudly in the quiet of the night, and as Phil struggles through the front door, feet clip clipping loudly into the hall, he can hear the sounds of Danās shushing as their dog bounds towards them from the other room, probably where heād made himself on the sofa he knows heās not allowed up onto, and Phil pulls the baby carrier up out of his eyeline, shushing him further as he starts to whine, tail wagging, clearly wanting some attention since heād been left alone most of the day.
16. vacation getaway
Phil is squeezing the last of the suncream into the palm of his hand, squirting out rather pathetically, he looks at if for a moment as it melts between his fingers under the hot sun, and he starts rubbing it up and down his arm, when thereās suddenly a shadow being casted over him.
17. just another drop stitch
When Hermione wakes, sheās cold. Itās something sheās become very accustomed to in their cottage, and as their first winter here had rolled around, sheād had to use her initiative to find ways to keep her waking feeling freezing.
18. beneath the ice
When Kurt wakes, the first thing he does is stumble out of bed, almost tripping over his own feet as he runs towards his window, pressing his face against the glass, fogging it up with his breath as a grin breaks across his face, eyes lighting up at the sight of the snow thatās now blanketing the outside world. He doesnāt hesitate to spin on his heel, rushing out of his room to find his dad, skipping two, three steps at a time.
19. in sickness and in health
Of course both Dan and Phil get sick during their honeymoon.
Of all the places theyād travelled around the world, Hawaii had been one place theyād somehow managed to skip out on.
20. dear santa
Dear Santa,
My name is Dan and I live in England and Iām eight years old. Iām in Year 3 at school and itās okay I guess. The work isnāt so hard but the other kids in my class are kind of mean and I donāt really like them that much.

Billboard Woman of the Decade Taylor Swift: 'I Do Want My Music to Live On'
By: Jason Lipshutz for Billboard Magazine Date: December 14th issue
In the 2010s, she went from country superstar to pop titan and broke records with chart-topping albums and blockbuster tours. Now Swift is using her industry clout to fight for artistsā rights and foster the musical community she wished she had coming up.
One evening in late October, before she performed at a benefit concert at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, Taylor Swiftās dressing room became - as it often does - an impromptu summit of musicās biggest names. Swift was there to take part in the American Cancer Societyās annual We Can Survive concert alongside Billie Eilish, Lizzo, Camila Cabello and others, and a few of the artists on the lineup came by to visit.
Eilish, along with her mother and her brother/collaborator, Finneas OāConnell, popped in to say hello - the first time she and Swift had met. Later, Swift joined the exclusive club of people who have seen Marshmello without his signature helmet when the EDM star and his manager stopped by.
āTwo dudes walked in - I didnāt know which one was him,ā recalls Swift a few weeks later, sitting on a lounge chair in the backyard of a private Beverly Hills residence following a photo shoot. Her momentary confusion turned into a pang of envy. āItās really smart! Because heās got a life, and he can get a house that doesnāt have to have a paparazzi-proof entrance.ā She stops to adjust her gray sweatshirt dress and lets out a clipped laugh.
Swift, who will celebrate her 30th birthday on Dec. 13, has been impossibly famous for nearly half of her lifetime. She was 16 when she released her self-titled debut album in 2006, and 20 when her second album, Fearless, won the Grammy Award for album of the year in 2010, making her the youngest artist to ever receive the honor. As the decade comes to a close, Swift is one of the most accomplished musical acts of all time: 37.3 million albums sold, according to Nielsen Music; 95 entries on the Billboard Hot 100 (including five No. 1s); 23 Billboard Music Awards; 12 Country Music Association Awards; 10 Grammys; and five world tours.
She also finishes the decade in a totally different realm of the music world from where she started. Swiftās crossover from country to pop - hinted at on 2012ās Red and fully embraced on 2014ās 1989 - reflected a mainstream era in which genres were blended with little abandon, where artists with roots in country, folk and trap music could join forces without anyone raising eyebrows. (See: Swiftās top 20 hit āEnd Game,ā from 2017ās reputation, which featured Ed Sheeran and Future.)
Swiftās new album, Lover, released in August, is both a warm break from the darkness of reputation - which was created during a wave of negative press generated by Swiftās public clash with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian-West - as well as an amalgam of all her stylistic explorations through the years, from dreamy synth-pop to hushed country. āThe skies were opening up in my life,ā says Swift of the album, which garnered three Grammy nominations, including song of the year for the title track.
She recorded Lover after the Reputation Stadium Tour broke the record for the highest-grossing U.S. tour late last year. In 2020, Swift will embark on Lover Fest, a run of stadium dates that will feature a hand-picked lineup of artists (as yet unannounced) and allow Swift more time off from the road. āThis is a year where I have to be there for my family - thereās a lot of question marks throughout the next year, so I wanted to make sure that I could go home,ā says Swift, likely referencing her motherās cancer diagnosis, which inspired the Lover heart-wrencher āSoon Youāll Get Better.ā
Now, however, Swift finds herself in a different highly publicized dispute. This time itās with Scott Borchetta, the head of her former label, Big Machine Records, and Scooter Braun, the manager-mogul whose Ithaca Holdings acquired Big Machine Label Group and its master recordings, which include Swiftās six pre-Lover albums, in June. Upon news of the sale, Swift wrote in a Tumblr post that it was her āworst case scenario,ā accusing Braun of ābullyingā her throughout her career due to his connections with West. She maintains today that she was never given the opportunity to buy her masters outright. (On Tumblr, she wrote that she was offered the chance to āearnā back the masters to one of her albums for each new album she turned in if she re-signed with Big Machine; Borchetta disputed this characterization, saying she had the opportunity to acquire her masters in exchange for re-signing with the label for a ālength of timeā - 10 more years, according to screenshots of legal documents posted on the Big Machine website.)
Swift has said that she intends to rerecord her first six albums next year, starting next November, when she says sheās contractually able to - in order to regain control of her recordings. But the back-and-forth appears to be nowhere near over: Last month, Swift alleged that Borchetta and Braun were blocking her from performing her past hits at the American Music Awards or using them in an upcoming Netflix documentary - claims Big Machine characterized as āfalse informationā in a response that did not get into specifics. (Swift ultimately performed the medley she had planned.) In the weeks following this interview, Braun said he was open to āall possibilitiesā in finding a āresolution,ā and Billboard sources say that includes negotiating a sale. Swift remains interested in buying her masters, though the price could be a sticking point, given her rerecording plans, the control she has over the licensing of her music for film and TV, and the market growth since Braunās acquisition.
However it plays out, the battle over her masters is the latest in a series of moves that has turned Swift into something of an advocate for artistsā rights, and made her a cause that everyone from Halsey to Elizabeth Warren has rallied behind. From 2014 to 2017, Swift withheld her catalog from Spotify to protest the streaming companyās compensation rates, saying in a 2014 interview, āThere should be an inherent value placed on art. I didnāt see that happening, perception-wise, when I put my music on Spotify.ā In 2015, ahead of the launch of Apple Music, Swift wrote an open letter criticizing Apple for its plan to not pay royalties during the three-month free trial it was set to offer listeners; the company announced a new policy within 24 hours. Most recently, when she signed a new global deal with Universal Music Group in 2018, Swift (who is now on Republic Records) said one of the conditions of her contract was that UMG share proceeds from any sale of its Spotify equity with its roster of artists - and make them non-recoupable against those artistsā earnings.
During a wide-ranging conversation, Billboardās Woman of the Decade expresses hope that she can help make the lives of creators a little easier in the years to come - and a belief that her behind-the-scenes strides will be as integral to her legacy as her biggest singles. āNew artists and producers and writers need work, and they need to be likable and get booked in sessions, and they canāt make noise - but if I can, then Iām going to,ā promises Swift. This is where being impossibly famous can be a very good thing. āI know that it seems like Iām very loud about this,ā she says, ābut itās because someone has to be.ā
While watching some of your performances this year - like SNL and NPRās Tiny Desk Concert - I was struck by how focused you seemed, like there were no distractions getting in the way of what you were trying to say. Thatās a really wonderful way of looking at this phase of my life and my music. Iāve spent a lot of time re-calibrating my life to make it feel manageable. Because there were some years there where I felt like I didnāt quite know what exactly to give people and what to hold back, what to share and what to protect. I think a lot of people go through that, especially in the last decade. I broke through pre-social media, and then there was this phase where social media felt fun and casual and quirky and safe. And then it got to the point where everyone has to evaluate their relationship with social media. So I decided that the best thing I have to offer people is my music. Iām not really here to influence their fashion or their social lives. That has bled through into the live part of what I do.
Meanwhile, youāve found a way to interact with your fans in this very pure way - on your Tumblr page. Tumblr is the last place on the internet where I feel like I can still make a joke because it feels small, like a neighborhood rather than an entire continent. We can kid around - they literally drag me. Itās fun. Thatās a real comfort zone for me. And just like anything else, I need breaks from it sometimes. But when I do participate in that space, itās always in a very inside-joke, friend vibe. Sometimes, when I open Twitter, I get so overwhelmed that I just immediately close it. I havenāt had Twitter on my phone in a while because I donāt like to have too much news. Like, I follow politics, and thatās it. But I donāt like to follow who has broken up with who, or who wore an interesting pair of shoes. Thereās only so much bandwidth my brain can really have.
Youāve spoken in recent interviews about the general expectations youāve faced, using phrases like āTheyāve wanted to see thisā and āThey hated me for this.ā Who is ātheyā? Is it social media or disparaging think pieces or... Itās sort of an amalgamation of all of it. People who arenāt active fans of your music, who like one song but love to hear who has been canceled on Twitter. Iāve had several upheavals of somehow not being what I should be. And this happens to women in music way more than men. Thatās why I get so many phone calls from new artists out of the blue - like, āHey, Iām getting my first wave of bad press, Iām freaking out, can I talk to you?ā And the answer is always yes! Iām talking about more than 20 people who have randomly reached out to me. I take it as a compliment because it means that they see what has happened over the course of my career, over and over again.
Did you have someone like that to reach out to? Not really, because my career has existed in lots of different neighborhoods of music. I had so many mentors in country music. Faith Hill was wonderful. She would reach out to me and invite me over and take me on tour, and I knew that I could talk to her. Crossing over to pop is a completely different world. Country music is a real community, and in pop I didnāt see that community as much. Now there is a bit of one between the girls in pop - we all have each otherās numbers and text each other - but when I first started out in pop it was very much you versus you versus you. We didnāt have a network, which is weird because we can help each other through these moments when you just feel completely isolated.
Do you feel like those barriers are actively being broken down now? God, I hope so. I also hope people can call it out, [like] if you see a Grammy prediction article, and itās just two womenās faces next to each other and feels a bit gratuitous. No oneās going to start out being perfectly educated on the intricacies of gender politics. The key is that people are trying to learn, and thatās great. No oneās going to get it perfect, but, God, please try.
At this point, who is your sounding board, creatively and professionally From a creative standpoint, Iāve been writing alone a lot more. Iām good with being alone, with thinking alone. When I come up with a marketing idea for the Lover tour, the album launch, the merch, Iāll go right to my management company that Iāve put together. I think a team is the best way to be managed. Just from my experience, I donāt think that this overarching, one-person-handles-my-career thing was ever going to work for me. Because that person ends up kind of being me who comes up with most of the ideas, and then I have an amazing team that facilitates those ideas. The behind-the-scenes work is different for every phase of my career that Iām in. Putting together the festival shows that weāre doing for Lover is completely different than putting together the Reputation Stadium Tour. Putting together the reputation launch was so different than putting together the 1989 launch. So we really do attack things case by case, where the creative first informs everything else.
Youāve spoken before about how meaningful the reputation tourās success was. What did it represent? That tour was something that I wanted to immortalize in the Netflix special that we did because the album was a story, but it almost was like a story that wasnāt fully realized until you saw it live. It was so cool to hear people leaving the show being like, āI understand it now. I fully get it now.ā There are a lot of red herrings and bait-and-switches in the choices that Iāll make with albums, because I want people to go and explore the body of work. You can never express how you feel over the course of an album in a single, so why try?
That seems especially true of your last three albums or so. āShake It Offā is nothing like the rest of 1989. Itās almost like I feel so much pressure with a first single that I donāt want the first single to be something that makes you feel like youāve figured out what Iāve made on the rest of the project. I still truly believe in albums, whatever form you consume them in - if you want to stream them or buy them or listen to them on vinyl. And I donāt think that makes me a staunch purist. I think that that is a strong feeling throughout the music industry. Weāre running really fast toward a singles industry, but you got to believe in something. I still believe that albums are important.
The music industry has become increasingly global during the past decade. Is reaching new markets something you think about? Yeah, and Iām always trying to learn. Iām learning from everyone. Iām learning when I go see Bruce Springsteen or Madonna do a theater show. And Iām learning from new artists who are coming out right now, just seeing what theyāre doing and thinking, āThatās really cool.ā You need to keep your influences broad and wide-ranging, and my favorite people who make music have always done that. I got to work with Andrew Lloyd Webber on the Cats movie, and Andrew will walk through the door and be like, āIāve just seen this amazing thing on TikTok!ā And Iām like, āYou are it! You are it!ā Because you cannot look at what quote-unquote āthe kids are doingā and roll your eyes. You have to learn.
Have you explored TikTok at all? I only see them when theyāre posted to Tumblr, but I love them! I think that theyāre hilarious and amazing. Andrew says that theyāve made musicals cool again, because thereās a huge musical facet to TikTok. [Heās] like, āAny way we can do that is good.ā
How do you see your involvement in the business side of your career progressing in the next decade? You seem like someone who could eventually start a label or be more hands-on with signing artists. I do think about it every once in a while, but if I was going to do it, I would need to do it with all of my energy. I know how important that is, when youāve got someone elseās career in your hands, and I know how it feels when someone isnāt generous.
Youāve served as an ambassador of sorts for artists, especially recently - staring down streaming services over payouts, increasing public awareness about the terms of record deals. We have a long way to go. I think that weāre working off of an antiquated contractual system. Weāre galloping toward a new industry but not thinking about re-calibrating financial structures and compensation rates, taking care of producers and writers. We need to think about how we handle master recordings, because this isnāt it. When I stood up and talked about this, I saw a lot of fans saying, āWait, the creators of this work do not own their work, ever?ā I spent 10 years of my life trying rigorously to purchase my masters outright and was then denied that opportunity, and I just donāt want that to happen to another artist if I can help it. I want to at least raise my hand and say, āThis is something that an artist should be able to earn back over the course of their deal - not as a renegotiation ploy - and something that artists should maybe have the first right of refusal to buy.ā God, I would have paid so much for them! Anything to own my work that was an actual sale option, but it wasnāt given to me. Thankfully, thereās power in writing your music. Every week, we get a dozen synch requests to use āShake It Offā in some advertisement or āBlank Spaceā in some movie trailer, and we say no to every single one of them. And the reason Iām rerecording my music next year is because I do want my music to live on. I do want it to be in movies, I do want it to be in commercials. But I only want that if I own it.
Do you know how long that rerecording process will take? I donāt know! But itās going to be fun, because itāll feel like regaining a freedom and taking back whatās mine. When I created [these songs], I didnāt know what they would grow up to be. Going back in and knowing that it meant something to people is actually a really beautiful way to celebrate what the fans have done for my music.
Ten years ago, on the brink of the 2010s, you were about to turn 20. What advice would you give yourself if you could go back in time? Oh, God - I wouldnāt give myself any advice. I would have done everything exactly the same way. Because even the really tough things Iāve gone through taught me things that I never would have learned any other way. I really appreciate my experience, the ups and downs. And maybe that seems ridiculously Zen, but... Iāve got my friends, who like me for the right reasons. Iāve got my family. Iāve got my boyfriend. Iāve got my fans. Iāve got my cats.
Taylor Swift Discusses 'The Man' & 'It's Nice To Have a Friend' In Cover Story Outtakes
Billboard //Ā by Jason Lipshutz // December 12th 2019
During her cover story interview for Billboardās Women In Music issue, Taylor Swift discussed several aspects of her mega-selling seventh studio album Lover, including its creation after a personal ārecalibratingā period, her stripped-down performances of its songs and her plans to showcase the full-length live with her Lover Fest shows next year. In two moments from the extended conversation that did not make the print story, Billboardās Woman of the Decade also touched upon two of the albumās highlights, which double as a pair of the more interesting songs in her discography: āThe Manā and āItās Nice To Have A Friend.āĀ
āThe Manā imagines how Swiftās experience as a person, artist and figure within the music industry would have been different had she been a man, highlighting how much harder women have to work in order to succeed (āIām so sick of running as fast as I can / Wondering if Iād get there quicker if I was a man,ā she sings in the chorus). The song has become a fan favorite since the release of Lover, and Swift recently opened a career-spanning medley with the song at the 2019 American Music Awards.
When asked about āThe Man,ā Swift pointed out specific double standards that exist in everyday life and explained why she wanted to turn that frustration into a pop single. Read Swiftās full thoughts on āThe Manā below:
āIt was a song that I wrote from my personal experience, but also from a general experience that Iāve heard from women in all parts of our industry. And I think that, the more we can talk about it in a song like that, the better off weāll be in a place to call it out when itās happening. So many of these things are ingrained in even women, these perceptions, and itās really about re-training your own brain to be less critical of women when we are not criticizing men for the same things. So many things that men do, you know, can be phoned-in that cannot be phoned-in for us. We have to really ā God, we have to curate and cater everything, but we have to make it look like an accident. Because if we make a mistake, thatās our fault, but if we strategize so that we wonāt make a mistake, weāre calculating.
āThere is a bit of a damned-if-we-do, damned-if-we-donāt thing happening in music, and thatās why when I can, like, sit and talk and be like āYeah, this sucks for me too,ā that feels good. When I go online and hear the stories of my fans talking about their experience in the working world, or even at school ā the more we talk about it, the better off weāll be. And I wanted to make it catchy for a reason ā so that it would get stuck in peopleās heads, [so] they would end up with a song about gender inequality stuck in their heads. And for me, thatās a good day.ā
Meanwhile, the penultimate song on Lover, āItās Nice To Have A Friend,ā sounds unlike anything in Swiftās catalog thanks to its elliptical structure, lullaby-like tone and incorporation of steel drums and brass. When asked about the song, Swift talked about experimenting with her songwriting, as well as capturing a different angle of the emotional themes at the heart of Lover. Read Swiftās full thoughts on āItās Nice To Have A Friendā below:
āIt was fun to write a song that was just verses, because my whole body and soul wants to make a chorus ā every time I sit down to write a song, Iām like, āOkay, chorus time, letās get the chorus done.ā But with that song, it was more of like a poem, and a story and a vibe and a feeling of... I love metaphors that kind of have more than one meaning, and I think I loved the idea that, on an album called Lover, we all want love, we all want to find somebody to see our sights with and hear things with and experience things with.
āBut at the end of the day weāve been searching for that since we were kids! When you had a friend when you were nine years old, and that friend was all you talked about, and you wanted to have sleepovers and you wanted to walk down the street together and sit there drawing pictures together or be silent together, or be talking all night. Weāre just looking for that, but endless sparks, as adults.ā

Was there ever a part of you that was like, āOh shit, I like this darker vibe, letās go even further down that path?ā I really Loved Reputation because it felt like a rock opera, or a musical, doing it live. Doing that stadium show was so fun because it was so theatrical and so exciting to perform that, because itās really cathartic! But I have to follow whatever direction my life is going in emotionally... The skies were opening up in my life. Thatās what happened. But in a way that felt like a pink sky, a pink and purple sky, after a storm, and now it looks even more beautiful because it looked so stormy before. And thatās just like, I couldn't stop writing. Iāve never had an album with 18 songs on it before, and a lot of what I do is based on intuition. So, you know, I try not to overthink it. Who knows, there may be another dark album. I plan on doing lots of experimentation over the course of my career. Who knows? But it was a blast, I really loved it.
I mean, look, a Taylor Swift screamo album? Iāll be first in line. Iām so happy to hear that, because I think you might be the only one. Ha! I have a terrible scream. Itās obnoxious.
Why Taylor Swift's Lover Fest Will Be Her Next Big Step
Billboard //Ā by Jason Lipshutz // December 11th 2019Ā - [Excerpt]
On why she chose to put together Lover fest: āI havenāt really done festivals in years - not since I was a teenager. Thatās something that [the fans] donāt expect from me, so thatās why I wanted to do it. I want to challenge myself with new things and at the same time keep giving my fans something to connect to.ā

Lights, camera, lockdown! All the films I watched at home this November.
Last month, the UK went on a one month down lockdown, causing cinemas to shut and new releases to be put on hold.
In fact, Christopher Nolanās Tenet was the only multi million dollar film to be released this year. Itās painful to think that Dune was supposed to be released almost two weeks from now and that we have to wait several months to see the sci fi film hit screens. Despite the post poned releases and closing of cinema chains, there are still some great films I hadnāt seen and used last month as an opportunity to look into them. Even though I didnāt see as much as I did in October, the quality of the films I managed to see this month is high.
His House (2020) as seen on Netflix
Starting off reasonably well with this horror brought to you by Netflix that centers the life around two immigrants and a spirit haunting the new lives theyāre trying to build in the UK. Itās certainly a new perspective that I havenāt seen in horror and definitely isnāt a film for the fainted hearted for some of the scenes in this are genuinely terrifying. The overall message was thought provoking and poignant as it sort of spoke for those whoāve lost their lives attempting to seek asylum and those whoa are still struggling to find a new home.
His House is available to watch on Netflix. Score: 9/10Ā Ā
Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight (2020) as seen on NetflixĀ
Definitely one of the most surprisingly good films I watched this month, Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight is a classic Netflix horror from Poland. The film follows a group of Polish teenagers addicted to social media who are sent to a camp to curb their addiction. However, when on a hike through the woods, one of the teens goes missing and without a phone to call for help, the kids are forced to face two grotesque monsters feeding upon humans. From start to finish, this film was highly entertaining and had a good structure to it. There were no gimmicks or cliches and itās definitely a film Iād recommend to just about anyone.Ā
Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight is available to watch on Netflix.Ā
Score: 10/10
The Ring (2002) as seen on BBC iPlayer
Gore Verbinskiās (A Cure for Wellness, Pirates of the Caribbean) infamous horror is a cult classic and must watch for scary movie fans. Usually horror films can be too gimmicky and borderline cringey without an ounce of substance to them. However, The Ring is surprisingly good in that it possesses a deep narrative with three dimensional characters, good acting and wonderful direction. When a journalistās (Naomi Watts) niece dies in unknown circumstances, she embarks on a journey to discover a horrifying tape that if watched, kills you in a weekās time. The box office sales for this film speaks for itself seeing as the film made nearly $130 million when it was released back in 2002. The Ring is certainly not for the faint hearted, so if horror isnāt your thing, Iād advise you stay well away from it.Ā
Score: 9/10Ā
Misery (1990) as seen on Netflix
Stephen Kingās Misery is turned into an unsettling thriller starring Kathy Bates and James Caan. Author Paul Sheldon (James Caan) ends up getting caught in a snow storm, that seems his car veer off the road, leaving him in a critical state. However, a seemingly caring and selfless woman, Annie (Kathy Bates) takes him in, using her work as a nurse to care for him. It turns out that Annie is a super fan of Paulās work and the care she has for him soon turns nasty and sadistic, leaving Paul in a panicked state for he is in the middle of nowhere with a practical psychopath. I wouldnāt say Misery is one of best adaptations of Kingās novels. There are better pieces of work by Stephen King that have been made into movies such as IT, The Green Mile and 1922. The pace was quite slow and the fact that it took place in only one settling detracted from the progression of the film. However, itās entertaining, well cast and had a decent story to it.Ā
Score: 7/10
Drive (2011) as seen on Amazon PrimeĀ
Drive is 1000% one of the best films Iāve seen this year, in my entire life in fact. Itās incredibly bold, ambitious, vivid, subtle and heart wrenching at moments. A stunt driver (Ryan Gosling) is torn between the world of crime he partakes in and the love he has for a young woman (Carey Mulligan) that lives in the apartment next door to his. The subtlety and sensitivity that both Gosling and Mulligan brought to this film was so pure and authentic to their characters, whilst bringing an underlying sadness to the entirety of the film. By the end of the film you want to cry but arenāt sure why and these sorts of films are rare to find. The sound track and SFX in this are unreal, again adding to the confirmation that this film is one of a kind.
Score: 12/10Ā
Time (2020) as seen on Amazon Prime
I was delighted to see Amazon Prime had put this straight onto their service seeing as Iād missed out on Time during the London Film Festival two months ago. This is one of the most moving and deep pieces of work Iāve seen this year. Time is a documentary filmed over 20 years that details the life of a woman trying to seek justice for her husband who was put in prison for life for armed robbery. Not only is she fighting for her husband, but also her four sons, two of which werenāt even born when their father was put away in jail. Fox Rich lives in Louisiana, one of Americaās toughest states when it comes to the criminal justice system. Sentences are of some of the highest in the entire country and are especially harsher to people of colour. Fox and her husband took the fatal and desperate decision to rob a bank in a bid to support their business and family. This drastic choice took Foxās husband away from his family and for 2 decades, Fox spent time trying to get her husband out of jail. The thing that moved me the most about this documentary was her sons; four beautiful, smart and driven men who grew up without a father. It made me wonder how proud Fox must be of her kids and to see her fight for her husband and remain loyal to him is enough love to last two lifetimes.Ā
Time is availableĀ to watch on Amazon Prime now.
Score: 10/10
The Departed (2006) as seen on DVD
Throughout this two and a half hour film I was wondering how they had managed to get Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Alec Baldwin and Mark Wahlberg to do a film together. And the answer is that this epic and high profile movie was directed by the infamous Martin Scorsese. Itās a mystery why I hadnāt seen this film sooner, seeing as it was a huge hit during its release making a staggering $291 million worldwide during its release. This is definitely DiCaprioās best film (next to Revolutionary Road and The Revenant) and his performance was incredibly punchy and strong throughout. Everyone in this film was top class and the dialogue fitted well with each character with a natural story progression throughout. A top notch, Hollywood, must watch film.
Score: 10/10Ā
Murder by Numbers (2002) as seen on Amazon Prime
One of Ryan Goslingās earliest films follows two high school students committing a sadistic murder simply to see just how it feels. Detective Cassie Mayweather (Sandra Bullock) is put on the case to solve the murder and quickly pieces the case together, leading her to Richard Haywood (Ryan Gosling) and Justin Pendleton (Michael Pitt) two students at the same high school. I wouldnāt say this film was bad, however the ending played a big part in the overall quality of the film. It had a good pace and characters, however the ending definitely let down the film for it was rushed and unaligned to the rest of the film. Ryan Goslingās performance at the tender age of 22 was pretty decent and definitely stated to everyone else his ability as an actor for years to come.Ā
Score: 7/10
All Good Things (2010) as seen on Amazon Prime
As you can tell by now, I went on a Ryan Gosling whip this month. All Good Things is the true story of David Marks (Ryan Gosling), whose wife Katie (Kirsten Dunst) disappears and still to this day, has never been found. Marks was the prime suspect in the disappearance case but was never found guilty and lives a free man. Even though the story was interesting and the performances good, the fact this is a Weinstein Company Film made it hard to watch, especially with the totally unnecessary nudity and sex scenes that put Kirsten Dunst at its forefront. The film lacked a clear resolution and was left completely open ended like the case of Katie Marks, which is understandable, however not when it comes to making a good film.
Score: 6/10
Borat (2006) as seen on Amazon Prime
After finding the second Borat film to be highly entertaining, I decided to watch the first one and was certainly not left disappointed. The first Borat film introduces us to Kazakstan reporter Borat Sagdiyev (Sacha Baron Cohen) and his first visit to America, whilst taking in all the americanisms to report back to his own country. Soon his pursuit turns to Pamela Anderson whose doing a book signing across in California. The comedy has many jaw dropping moments and sees Cohen above and beyond the boundaries of comedy to bring the character of Borat to life.
Score: 10/10
Boy Erased (2018) as seen on Sky CinemaĀ
If thereās one film worth watching on this list, itād be Joel Edgertonās Boy Erased. This film is the product of a real understanding of film language and the ability to make a beautiful and heart felt story. Edgerton is a well known actor, but has taken time to go behind the camera as well as in front of it in this Golden Globe nominated picture starring the likes of Lucas Hedges, Russell Crowe, Nicole Kidman, Troye Sivan, Xavier Dolan and Joe Alwyn. Like HELLO if that cast isnāt making you immediately turn off this site right now to find Boy Erased, then I donāt know what will. The film based on a true story follows Jared Eamons (Lucas Hedges) and his time spent at a gay conversion centre with fellow homosexuals Gary (Troye Sivan) and Jon (Xavier Dolan). Jaredās father (Russell Crowe) is a pastor he and his wife (Nicole Kidman) take their religion rather seriously, which is why Jared has been forced to seek help for his sexuality. Itās a hard concept to swallow, especially in this day and age when most parents, religious or not, are starting to become more acceptable of their childrenās sexuality. This film exposes the reality beyond that and how some parents feel their child is damaged by something completely normal and feel the need to seek help for it. Boy Erased is made with sensitivity and beautiful acting from an a class cast. All round, itās a perfect film.
Score: 11/10
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009) as seen on Amazon Prime
I was a little confused starting this film to see it in Swedish, as I thought I was watching the David Fincher film of the same title. However,Ā The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was original a book and the first adapation of it for film was directed byĀ Niels Arden Oplev, two years before Fincher made his version, starring Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig. However, the fact that this version was in Swedish didnāt detract from the thrilling story spun onto screen. The three hour movie follows a journalist whose been hired to solve the mystery of a missing girl who is part of a high profile family. A young female hacker who once hacked the journalist and practically ruined his career, joins him along the way and the pair of them uncover a long string of untold secrets that see blood being split amongst numerous women. Itās one of the best thrillers Iāve ever seen and a must watch if you enjoyed Fincherās version.
Score: 10/10
Still Alice (2014) as seen on DVD
A highly anticipated film on my part, Still Alice is an arresting and moving film about a mother struggling with on set Alzheimers. Julianne Moore scooped up a Best Actress Award at the Academy Awards in 2015, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA for her performance as Dr Alice Howland and her battle with Alzheimers at the age of 50. Kristen Stewart plays her daughter and Alec Baldwin her husband and their performances are equal to Julianne Mooreās. Overall, this was a touching piece that had soooo much depth to it and yet carried a satisfying simplicity throughout it.Ā
Score: 10/10
Enemy (2013) as seen on DVD
I heard about Enemyās synopsis via a YouTube video and was throughly excited to watch it on hearing it was directed by Denis Villeneuve, a master director when it comes to thrillers and sci fi films. Even though Enemy was difficult to fully interpret, I still enjoyed the story and performance Jake Gyllenhaal brought to the table as a man who meets another man that looks exactly like him. Thereās some pure mind fuckery that plays throughout the film as youāre left questioning who is this other man or if there are even two men at all. If anything, itās an exploration of a man having a double life, wrapped up in some sinister secrets and tied between two women. All of Denis Villeneuveās work is exceptional and Enemy is no different. A must watch for thriller lovers.Ā
Score: 10/10
A Star is Born (2018) as seen on DVD
Bradley Cooperās A Star is Born certainly wins the award for making me cry the most this month. The last version I saw of this film starred Judy Garland and James Mason and was centred around a musical actress and the rocky relationship she had with her actor husband. That 1954 version possessed a lot of brilliance and it was easy to compare it to the more modern version starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. Who wouldāve thought these two could be such an authentic on screen couple? The songs, the lyrics and the acting that these two brought to this picture was on another level, it was incredible from start to finish. Obviously the fact that this film had been done 4 times before honed the quality of the film, however Bradley Cooperās direction and ability to bring out the best in Lady Gaga definitely makes this version of A Star is Born the best one yet. This directorial debut was nominated for 8 Academy Awards including Best Picture and Lady Gaga was handed the award for Best Music for a motion picture. Warning: you will cry whilst watching this or at least afterwards.Ā
Score: 12/10
Sorry to Bother You (2018) as seen on Netflix
Netflix certainly came through this month when it put Boots Rileyās fanatical dark comedy Sorry to Bother You on its streaming service. Itās honestly like nothing Iāve ever seen before and the innuendo and hidden messages within this film make it something that you can watch several times and never get bored of. Cassius Green (Lakeith Stanfield) gets a job as a telemarketer who gets promoted to aĀ āpower callerā and through pride and greed, ends up abandoning his ideologies and friends completely. The film speaks for the gentrification of Oakland, California and capitalistic society we live in today. There are many hidden messages amongst the film that at first are hard to decipher, but soon you realise these messages are as clear as day within our own society. Lakeith Stanfield stars alongside Tessa Thompson, Steve Yeun and Armie Hammer, not a cast youād usually put together but one that certainly worked. Sorry to Bother You is highly entertaining and will definitely make you laugh out loud at points and have you questioning your laughter right after.
Score: 10/10
The Florida Project (2017) as seen on DVD
Iām starting to think that films made between 2017 and 2018 are some of the best ever made and the Florida Project falls into that. I heard about this film through one of my favourite actors and was glad for the recommendation as this film is one of the best Iāve seen all year. The colours and character dynamics are strong and vivid throughout, as we follow the lives of people living on an apartment complex whilst speaking for the child poverty that plagues American society today. Willem Dafoe, who plays the complexās handy man and security guard, even earned himself a Best Supporting Actor Award at the 2018 Academy Awards.Ā
Score: 10/10
Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind (2014) as seen on DVDĀ
Usually Iād pass on a Charlie Kaufman film, seeing as they make no sense, however I felt that it was time I delved into this cult classic starring Kate Winslet, Jim Carrey, Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo and Elijah Wood. Itās a really well made film with a clear and distinct message to it thatās represented in some phenomenal filmmaking techniques. The plot line of this film follows a man trying to erase a past lover and his memories of her get wiped away physically before your eyes on screen. This film is certainly a conversation starter and one Iād recommend to just about anyone.Ā
Score: 9/10
Moonrise Kingdom (2012) as seen on DVD
Wes AndersonāsĀ wonderful mind is depicted in this endearing narrative about two children running away from home. This has to one of Wes Andersonās most iconic films and next to The Grand Budapest Hotel, itās definitely one of the films you think of when you think of Andersonās work. His work is known for having well rounded stories, beautiful shots and A List casts, with Moonrise Kingdom being no expection as Anderson manages to squeeze Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Jason Schwartzman, Harvey Kietel and a young Lucas Hedges into this film. If youāve seen any of Wes Andersonās work and not Moonrise Kingdom, get on it now. No, seriously, now.Ā
Score: 10/10Ā
Jarhead (2005) as seen on DVD
Sam Mendesā war film starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jamie Foxx translates the lives of US soldiers in Iraq onto screen and the brain washing their government has done to boost the importance of the US military and the service soldiers are doing to their country. Jake Gyllenhaalās execution in this film is a reflection of his ability as a great actor. He always has this patient and gritty approach to his work that makes him addicting to watch on screen. Thereās an entire video on YouTube about Jake Gyllenhaalās eyes and the way they communicate his emotions on screen. This is certainly present in Jarhead, as the anger, frustration, disappointment and despair is held within Jake Gyllenhaalās eyes throughout. Jarhead was originally a memoir written by a US solider named Anthony Swofford. The only thing I wasnāt a fan of was the open ended resolution to the film and the stagnant progression of Jake Gyllenhaalās character. He literally didnāt achieve anything, which I suppose is the point of the film and how the honour that soldiers who went to Iraq were supposed to feel, is more of a fantasy than a reality.Ā
Score: 9/10Ā
Silence (2016) as seen on BBC iPlayerĀ
This film was truly summit else and a refreshing turn on genre from highly acclaimed filmmaker, Martin Scorsese. Silence certainly proved that he has the ability to be more sensitive with his films and can tells stories outside his usual New York mobster type movies. The film tracks the journey of two Portuguese missionaries (Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver) in the 17th Century who go to Japan looking for one of their mentors (Liam Neeson). However in this era, Christians faced persecution in Japan and were practically slaughtered for not following the countryās religion of Buddhism. The priestsā journey is perilous and heart rendering as they are forced to abandon their own religion in order to save their own lives and the lives of others. Despite the film being just over 160 minutes, itās an inspiring story and one that is told in a tactful way. To believe this is a film is quite hard, as the accuracy of it makes it closer to reality than just a film itself.
Score: 8/10
Lynn + Lucy (2019) as seen on BBC iPlayerĀ
This film recently came out in UK cinemas and was put onto BBC iPlayer due to lockdown. I found it to be interesting and enjoyed the new perspective it gave to quite a simple story. Lynn and Lucy have been friends for almost their entire lives, and when Lucyās baby boy dies in unexplained circumstances, it drives a wedge between her relationship with Lynn, as people in their neighbourhood accuse her of being a child murderer. Eventually, Lynn stats to believe the rumours herself, leaving her best friend behind and favouring the opinions of those who hardly know her. A great debut and British film, Lynn + Lucy is profound story of friendship.Ā
Score: 8/10
Revolutionary Road (2008) as seen on NetflixĀ
Revolutionary Road has a metric score of 60% on Rotten Tomatoes, which I find quite offensive as the film nearly falls into theĀ āthanks but no thanksā category of films. Directed by Sam Mendes and starring Kate Winslet alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, I donāt see whatās not to like. I only clocked halfway through the film why DiCaprio had been cast with Kate Winslet (Titanic, duh) and it made their on screen chemistry more prominent for me. I always say this about EVERY SINGLE Leonardo DiCaprio film I watch, but his performance in this was unreeeaaal. His character went somewhere intense and never returned, making the hardship on screen 10 times more powerful. Thereās a scene where him and Winsletās character are in a full blown argument and DiCaprioās rage was on another level. Incredibly authentic and honest, Revolutionary Road showcases a wonderful example of when two masterful actors come together to make something great.Ā
Score: 10/10
Hillbilly Elegy (2020) as seen on NetflixĀ
Hillbilly Elegy recently got torn to shreds by critics as it was released on Netflix the other week, and I half agree with what most are saying about it, but also feel thereās unnecessary criticisms about this film. The film is based on a memoir of a Yale Law student, J.D Vance (Gabriel Basso) who comes from rough beginnings and ends up building the life he so desired from a young age. His mother (Amy Adams) is a destructive drug addict whoās moods change frequently so that sheās constantly at war with her own mother (Glenn Close) and two children (Haley Bennett and Gabriel Basso). The story follows J.Dās return to his home town to claim his mother from a hospital after she over dosed on heroin. The only problem is, he has an interview with a law firm from Washington the following morning and has to choose between taking care of his mother and landing his dream job. Sounds pretty intriguing, right? And it truly is. The film is laced with conflict and great performances from everyone, however critics have blasted this film with hate, saying that it doesnāt ring true to the entire American experience of living in poverty, without healthcare and enough money to bring food to the table. The fact that J.D made it to Harvard and now works for a successful enterprise somehow detracts from his struggle as a child, which I think is complete BS. I think this film should be taken for more face value than as a political story. Itās a straight talking, rags to riches tale that proves with hard work and dedication, you can transform your struggles into success. One critic had the audacity to say that āSelling out your origins is a kind of white trash cosplay because you were lucky enough to get outā. The irony of this is that the critic herself is white and it suggests had JD been a person of colour, itād made a better film, which isnāt the kind of world where I want to live in when stories of people of colour are used as poverty porn rather than something to enjoy or learn from.Ā My only criticism of this film would be the pace of conflict within the film and how things went from 0-100 waaay too quickly. This can happen in real life, but on screen it tends to look sloppy and rushed.
Score: 9/10Ā
And thatās it! A rather short list for this month, but as the year draws to a close, Iām just really excited for the new films hopefully hitting screens next year. Seen you soon!

Draft of the story Iām gonna tell my children if I ever have them
Will edit and revise and edit more and more and add things as time goes by and I recall more events and think of more ways to phrase it in a cool way. Iāll multi-chapter it. hereās what i have so far.Ā
(whatever word the kid said to set off the story) Now thereās something I havenāt heard in a long time.Ā
My teenage years were more average than youād expect, that is until the pandemic hit. But I guess you want a historical perspective on ALL of it, donāt you.Ā
So I guess we should start at the beginning.Ā
Part 1
It started with Harambe, I guess. Iām sure youāve heard that name before.Ā
It was an ordinary day in 2016. I was almost 12. I didnāt know anything about politics, except that the NDP were the good guys because my moms put their sign on our lawn every election year and we ordered a bigger sign when the neighbours put up a sign in a different colour that was way bigger than ours, like a sign contest.Ā
Please donāt take it for granted that you donāt know a lot of stuff about politics. Your life is much easier when you donāt.Ā
Dabbing was still a thing, but I only tried it once. Everyone was saying that nine plus ten was twenty-one. So now you have an idea of how long ago this was.Ā
I had begun using the internet more often. Itās not like I didnāt use it before, I liked to play dress up games and look at memes. Iād even begun learning to make my own memes. Most of them were terrible and I thought they were great.Ā
So I was using the Internet, and I went to look at a funny BuzzFeed article. And every article on the side was talking about something called Harambe.Ā
At school, everyone was also talking about it. I quickly learned what happened. Some toddler crawled into a gorilla enclosure and the zookeepers shot the gorilla, even though she didnāt attack the kid.Ā
Everyone was talking about Harambe. In fact, when we had some caterpillars in class and we watched them grow up into butterflies, the class voted to name one after Harambe.Ā
If someone from the future had told me that this was the event that kickstarted the worst timeline you could think of, I wonder how I would have reacted.Ā
[2020 start, bring up world war 3 threats that became a meme and then didnāt happen]Ā
[exaggerate 2020ā²s breaking of time a LOT. say time actually broke.]Ā
(just gonna write down the Nov52020 stuff because thinking of thatās what made me start writing this)Ā
And this is very important, because itās where it all comes together. Remember how I told you about Supernatural? Remember how I told you all the lore of Tumblr that I could think of? This is where it becomes relevant again.Ā
Because it still feels like the entirety of the 2010s had been building up to that one day.Ā
I remember it like it was yesterday. Probably because, for months afterwards, it still felt like it had been only a week ago. Just shows how broken time was that year.Ā
I was scrolling through Tumblr, looking for election updates. Everyone was talking about the election. Mostly, about Nevada.Ā
All the other states were either red or blue, and only Nevada was left. Everyone was waiting. You could cut the tension with a knife. There were memes all over my dash about how Nevada was taking ages. This election could mean the end of the world. Millions of lives were at stake here.Ā
Then, next thing I remember, everyone was talking about Destiel.Ā
I donāt remember how it started. I just remember it not having happened yet, and then it was in full swing.Ā
I suppose that only makes sense. It was like a fever dream. And if Inception is to go by, you never remember the beginning of a dream.Ā
When you think about it, the same goes for the entire pandemic. It wasnāt there, then it was all over the news, then it started happening in my city
They said that 2012 tumblr had returned.Ā
I still donāt know what emotion I felt that day. But it consumed every part of me. They compared it to being on crack. That day was a blur,Ā
I hear other websites were freaking out as well. But nowhere near the way it was on tumblr. They didnāt have the lore we did.Ā
[ok now mention georgia turning blue and me learning this from a crab rave meme, and how there were rumors of a sherlock season 5, and then finally the election results]
And so thatās how the insanity of those last few days ended. Between a dildo store and a crematorium.Ā
Itās rather poetic, if you ask me. Because when you think about it, all of life happens between a dildo store and a crematorium.Ā
And after all that, Iād had enough of a lot of things to last anyone a lifetime.Ā
I remember most of what came afterwards as a hazy blur, drifting between moments. [spn finale] [spanish dub] [other stuff]Ā
I wish I could say it calmed down in 2021. After a real life season finale, shouldnāt things calm down?Ā
But it wasnāt a series finale. There were far too many unresolved plot points.Ā
[ok next part]
Ā [Ending]Ā
And so thatās how things calmed down. They went back to what you think of when you think of life. But they didnāt go back to normal.Ā
They still arenāt back to normal. Because what I thought of asĀ ānormalā during the pandemic was never normal. It was always the apocalypse, only in more subtle ways you donāt know are there until they all come crashing down on you at once.Ā

J.J. Jamieson Interview
A writer, producer and former network executive, J.J. Jamieson, has produced movies for Hallmark Channel, including all three Graceland movies (Christmas at Graceland, Wedding at Graceland and Christmas at Graceland: Home for the Holidays), and is now working with Bounce TV, writing both their 2019 original, Greyson Family Christmas,Ā and this yearās Marry Me This Christmas, starringĀ Brandon Jay McLaren and Gabrielle Graham.
Ahead of Marry Me This Christmasā December 6th debut on Bounce (also available On Demand in Canada on December 8th), Jamieson was kind enough to take the time to talk from his Santa Monica home about what makes Christmas moviemaking special, and how Bounceās latest holiday entry came together despite a global pandemic.
Q: How did you get involved in moviemaking?
A: Iām originally from Princeton, N.J. and way back in the late 1800s (laughs), I joined NBC as a page and eventually became an assistant in the movies and miniseries department, as that just happened to be where there was an opening, and then stayed there for the better part of a decade, eventually becoming a creative executive.
When I left NBC, I moved out here [to California], because show business is what I felt like I should be doing, and this is where show business is. I became a producer and worked for a variety of different companies, and sometimes for myself, and because movies and miniseries were what I knew, I occasionally worked on TV movies includingāmuch to the horror of my childrenāone called Spring Break Shark Attack (laughs). You gotta pay the bills, right?
But, whatever youāre doing, my goal as a producer is to always to do the best with what youāre handed. Sometimes that turns out better than others, but the work is always the work, and you have to find that something that makes every project special.
A: How do you go from producing Spring Break Shark Attack to Hallmark movies?
Q: A friend of mine, Michael Larkin, a very accomplished creative producer, was working with Hallmark and said they needed a producer, someone to be the networkās eyes and ears on the ground, for a movie (Wedding of Dreams), and he couldnāt do it, so he said if they were really desperate, they could hire me (laughs).
Hallmark makes so many movies a year, their executives canāt be on set for the, usually, six weeks it takes to make themāthree to prep, three to filmāand then the edit, so they need someone on set to make sure everything is in alignment with the aesthetics of Hallmark.
ā¦So, I did one movie with them, and then three more movies after that.
Q: Whatās different about workingĀ on a Hallmark movie?
A: Iāve worked on a lot of different types of TV shows and movies, and have never been involved in anything else where thereās this fantastic love of the genre. People just love these movies.
I was shooting something in Tennessee, and struck up a conversation with this cop who was just sitting in his car, blocking the street while we were shooting outside, and he asked what we were filming, and when I said it was a Hallmark movie, his response was, āOh, I love Hallmark movies,ā and I was thinking, āReally? You do?ā
But he was serious. He was a fan. I think there are just a wide variety of people that these movies appeal to. Much broader than most imagine.
I think thereās comfort in the fact that when you sit down to watch, you know what youāre going to get. Youāre going to get a happy ending, you know itās all going to work out, and āWhatās wrong with that?,ā as my niece, who is also a fan, said to me once.
When I think about why Hallmark movies are so popular, I think of a conversation I had once with a friend of my wifeās, an MBA, a very accomplished woman, and she watches these movies. When I asked her, āWhat is it about Hallmark movies that you find so enrapturing, when thereās usually so little conflict?ā She said to me: I donāt need conflict. Iāve got enough stress with the kids, stress with my ex-husband, stress at the officeā¦I donāt need more stress. I want to sit down and watch something devoid of stress that feels good for the soul.
I think thatās the key, and I think itās what Hallmark has tapped into, and the competition to emulate that is just fanatical, particularly with the Christmas movies.
Q: What do you think of the explosion of Christmas movies across the dial?
A: People want to be in this game. When every other cable channelās ratings were falling, Hallmark was the only one going up. They were doing something right. They had tapped into something. Which I think is why Lifetime wants to do the same thing. I donāt think they have quite captured it, yet, but thereās also Netflix, doing it in a little bit of a different way. And then all these other channels, too, what, a dozen now? More? Producing their own [holiday] movies.
Iām shocked thereās not a saturation in the market, actually, because they keep on trying to spin that same wheel, but the appetite is obviously there, and I think thereās room, especially when youāre trying to do something a little bit different.
Q: How did you go from producing, to writing and producing, or in the case of Marry Me This Christmas, just writing? Are you a producer who writes, or a writer who also happens to produce?
A: Itās really a very different skill set, writers tend to be more introverted, more comfortable in front of a computer screen, because thatās mostly what writing is, just you in front of your computer, creating a world. Producing is more a job of management, making sure everyone shares the same vision of what the network wants.
To be a producer, is to be a generalist, and I guess Iām a generalist. Iām not a musician, but I can have a conversation with a composer and know enough to talk about what elements of a score I think a scene needs. Iām not a director, but know enough to see a scene and say, āLetās try one thatās less big,ā or whatever. Iām not a cinematographer, but I can see where we might want to try a few more lights, so we donāt lose the actor in a scene.
Being a producer is an incredibly humbling job. One of my favorite parts of being on set is the first day. It always reminds me why I came out to Hollywood to do this. Youāre surrounded by a team of experts, all of whom are brilliant at their specific jobāthe hair stylists, the makeup artists, lighting, soundā¦Every single one of them knows more about their jobs than I ever will, and you feel humbled by that. It makes one appreciative of the collaborative aspect of this art form. Itās nobodyās movie. Itās not the writers, or the producerās, or the executivesā, or even the directorās or actorsāāevery movie is a product of everyone who worked on it, and itās all our movie.
I had a good friend who went from being a creative producer to being a line producer (NOTE: a line producerās role is usually to manage the budget and act as an on-set human resources department; someone who puts out the inevitable fires that come up during filming), and I asked him, āBut donāt you miss the creative side?ā And he said to me, āItās all filmmaking. Weāre all filmmakers and itās all essential.ā I thought that was a lovely sentiment, and a testament to the overall teamwork nature of filmmaking. The people signing the checks in accounting are just as important as anyone else, because you canāt make the movie without them.
So, to finally answer your question, I think Iām more of a producer that also writes. A producer who spent enough time working with writers to get story ideas made, so that the idea of writing things myself began to feel realistic. And, so far, my record of giving my ideas to other writers, versus just me writing my ideas myself, has a pretty good percentage of getting things into production. The way I look at it, at least this way I have no one to blame but myself if something doesnāt work.
Q: How did you get involved with Bounce TV? And, for those like me who didnāt know Bounce even existed until last year, can you share a little about the network?
A: Sure, and youāre definitely not alone. Bounce is a sizeable basic cable and broadcast network, based in Atlanta. Theyāre in 94 million homes. Theyāre not in all markets yet, but thatās part of their mission, to increase their penetration and increase awareness.
I got involved because a good friend of mine thatās a talented producer and former Turner executive, David Hudson, moved from Santa Monica to Atlanta to oversee original programming for Bounce. His background is more in unscripted programming, so when Bounce decided they wanted more TV movies, he reached out to me and the first thing he said was that he needed a holiday picture for that same year.
Greyson Family Christmas was originally Greyson Family Thanksgiving. He gave me the premiseāa family lives next door to each other, one more conservative, one more liberal, and the daughter brings home her white boyfriend for the holidaysāand he needed a script. Given that it was so specific, I thought it would be easier if I just wrote it, which I did, and then worked as a producer on set during the shoot in Baton Rouge.
Q: Greyson Family Christmas ended up being one of my personal favorite movies of last season, and one thing I liked is that it was a little bit different. It wasnāt just a broad comedy or a straightforward holiday rom-com with little conflict.
A: Thank you, and we did try to make it about more than silliness. We wanted it to be light and fun, but also to say a little something about some of the very real things we wanted to address about race and family.
And we got so incredibly lucky with our cast, who were just amazing. Part of the trick of making a movie that has a lower budget, is doing what you can afford to do, and doing it well. Not stretching beyond what that budget allows. And we were very aware of that during production. With that incredibly short scheduleāwe shot Greyson in 12 daysāand tight budget, you have to be.
Look, I know you canāt please everyone with these movies. I mean, some people hate Dickens and Hemingwayāand Iām not saying Greyson is that, but I was really pleased with how the movie turned out, and think we had a great group working on it to make that happen.
We didnāt have a ton of money for publicity beyond the promos that aired on Bounceāno billboards, or things like thatābut the cast was great at promoting Greyson on social media, and even with the tight timeline and everything else, it ended up being the highest-rated original movie in the history of the network.
Whenever you make a movie, you try to make it the best you can, and how it performs is really out of your hands in a lot of ways, but it sure is nice when you havenāt let down your network, and it was doubly important for me, given my friendship and fondness for David Hudson, who my kids all call Uncle David.
Greyson Family Christmas will be re-airing this December, so I really hope even more people get a chance to discover it, because it really was a labor of love for me, and the network and, really, everyone involved.
[NOTE: Bounce currently has encore airings of Greyson Family Christmas scheduled for December 6th, 11th, 18th and 24th.]
A: The latest Bounce original holiday movie, Marry Me This Christmas, debuts on December 6th, which you also wrote. Tell us a little about the movie, and the process of filming it during a global pandemic.
Q: I didnāt produce this one, mostly due to COVID, [which is also why] it was shot in Canada.
Tonally we were trying to go for something more like a dramedyāsome comedy, but some real bit of business going on in the story.
I actually wrote this one a couple of years ago, not as a Christmas movie originally, and the whole idea is born out of the one joke at the end at the end of the first act, where she comes in to the pastor and says, āI know we havenāt known each other long, but youāve become really important to me, and this may sound crazy, but I really want you to marry me,ā and this guy who has had a huge crush on her is all excited and says āYes, yes,ā and her response is, āGreat, my fiancĆ© will be thrilled.ā
Thatās the joke, and itās silly. Itās a dad joke, really, but the whole movie was built out from there, and as silly as that idea is, we wanted to explore what would really happen if this young pastor fell in love with someone engaged to someone else. To try to make believable, and be about something.
Q: Was that inherent element of faith something that came from you, or a direction from the network?
A: This was all my own. I was raised Catholic, and grew up going to church every Sunday. My sons then went to Catholic School, so religion has kind of hung over my life like the cloud of dirt over Pigpen. (laughs) I mean, if I wasnāt going to hell before, I probably am for that line, right? (laughs, again)
Anyway, I really was interested in this notion of trying to be a good person playing against the other qualities of our human nature. Sometimes our hearts are drawn to do certain thingsānot bad or evil, just being human beings, not little boxes of saintliness. To me, the essence of the story was putting that around this character whose actual job it was to be a good guy, but on the other hand heās also a man, wrestling with the nature of love, and finally coming around to a greater sense of understanding than he had at the beginning.
We are all supposed to act with a sense of service and self-sacrifice, but on the other hand, weāre not utterly devoid of self. To be a human, even a human in service of God or goodness, doesnāt mean youāre also not supposed to fall in love with that same, almost religious, fervor, which is what I hope he realizes at the end. And itās all a lot more ambitious than that āha, haā dad joke of the premise.
I hope this movie is for everyone, not just people of faith. Thatās why I put in there that the best friend is an atheist. That a pastor and someone who doesnāt believe can still be friends. That [the non-believer] is still this supportive friend, and a good guy.
I was also very deliberate in that I didnāt want our pastor to pray for Godās help and receive it in a [direct] way. Thereās a scene in the chapel with the Bible, and I wanted it to be very clear that youāre not going to just get the answer to your problems [divinely], you have to figure out those sorts of matters yourself.
Q: How did the pandemic effect production?
A: Well, COVID has trimmed the number of original productions at Bounce in 2020. The plan is to increase our original movie production, and thatās been at least temporarily waylaid by all the [fallout] from COVID, but we did want to have at least one new movie for the fourth quarterā¦ and knowing how well last yearās original holiday movie did for them, there was definitely the sentiment of, āLetās do another Christmas movie,ā so it was a conscious and deliberate effort to make that happen, despite the pandemic.
So, I reached out to a friend of a friend, Thomas Michael [of Fella Films], because Canada had lower COVID infections and a rich film community, and he became our partner and producer. There also [had to be] a little extra money for COVID protections, and [filming] took a few extra days just due to safety protocols for the cast and crew. Plus, our cast is entirely Canadian, due to restrictions.
David Hudson and I, working as a consultant for the network, were looking for holiday movies, or rom-coms we could spin into a holiday movie. We were even looking at stories to develop into full scripts, and we just werenāt finding what weāre looking for, so I said, āLook, this has been sitting on my shelf, itās available, and Iām a cheap date.ā (laughs)
Q: Hallmark, in particular, has said casting Black actors in Canada is difficult, was that an issue you experienced?
A: I will say it was a question raised, because thatās not our usual production [location]. And working with Thomas Michael, we moved towards Ontario, because they do have a larger pool of Black Canadian actors, just because they have a larger Black population overall.
After some [research], we all felt very comfortable with the talent pool, and I think we once again got really lucky with our cast. These guys were just all really great. We did a read through, and I was just choked up by how good they all were.
They might not have the same name recognition of some of the actors in Greyson, like Stan Shaw or Robinne Lee, but theyāre all working actors. Brandon Jay McLaren, our pastor, is working on the new Turner and Hooch series, and I worked with him on a TV pilot 10 years ago. Gabrielle Graham, our female lead, has been a regular on two Amazon Prime series, [The Expanse and 21 Thunder].
I really hope people will respond to them, because I think they did a great job with the characters.
Q: How did Marry Me This Christmas end up with Megan Follows, best known as Anne of Green Gables, directing?
A: Once we had the determination to do it in Canada, we began looking for a Canadian director, on a pretty tight timeline. Our producer had a [working] relationship with Megan, and she has been directing more and more. We reached out to her and she responded well to the material, and I think got what we wanted to do with it.
She and the cast were terrific. And I think we just got lucky it turned out as well it did, given all the circumstances.
Q: There was talk there might be a Greyson Family Christmas sequel, was that idea a casualty of COVID?
A: Unfortunately, yes. We had a story worked out for a wedding, but with COVID and the difficulty in production, the soonest weād have been able to get it on the air was spring or summer 2021, and thatās a long time to wait for a sequel. But I like to think of Maya and Trent, and the rest of the Greyson family, living on happily, safely and healthily, nevertheless.
Q: Bounce is a network geared towards an African-American audience, does the fact youāre not Black come up when writing these stories?
A: Definitely. Especially in the first movie, Greyson, which really digs into more sensitive and deeper matters of race, having this white guy from New Jersey writing the movie was a little unusual, as Iāll be the first to admit.
I mean, when youāre telling a story, you are always putting yourself into characters unlike yourselfāteenage kids, the 75-year-old grandmotherāand trying to do it in a way that resonates and feels authentic. But, yes, I got help from people of color. Particularly for Greyson, where I was on set, the cast was extraordinarily helpful, making changes and making sure the voice was right.
I will say that where the characters in Greyson succeed, in respect to race, I give all the credit to the actors, who inhabited those characters and made them their own, and if anything feels a little off to an audience, I take the blame for those shortcomings.
In that movie, where I was a producer, and in my Hallmark movies too, I made an extra effort to hire and fill out our teams looking beyond the first resumes we received, because if Bounce canāt be supportive of the black filmmaking community, who can? We really did try to hire a crew that was reflective of Americaās demographics.
For too long, in this industry primarily driven by white men who have the tendency to hire other white men, that wasnāt the case, so you have to be open to the person who has 7 credits but might not have had the same opportunities, versus someone who has 35 credits, and not just pick the default. To undo that unconscious bias. Iām sure Iāve been guilty of favoring people with longer resumes, instead of saying we need those diverse voices that are more reflective of society at large. Itās something I hope to keep working on, because I think it makes the final product better as a result.
Q: What do you hope viewers take away from Marry Me This Christmas?
A: As a filmmaker thereās always something fun anytime you have an idea in your head and it ends up on screen for other people to see, so Iām just excited for it to air and hope people like it.
Bounce wants to be in that arena, making holiday feel-good movies, but maybe doing something a little bit more. Yes, itās a rom-com at Christmas, but I think itās a little bit of an alternative to all those other kinds of movies, and you might get something you donāt expect. A little present under the tree you didnāt realize was there. I hope it brings just a little extra joy for the holiday.
