alright bros, the first thing i have to say is 1, you're not always the cause. bad things happen to good people and i know it sucks but it helps you grow. if only good things happened then you'd probably be boring as hell. i hear some of you guys can be because you cant keep a conversation going. the thing is, you may be a victim MOST OF THE TIME but that doesnt mean ALL THE TIME!! you can be wrong in an argument, you can be right in an argument. but it changes. you're a very driven, smart, confident person in most areas but that doesnt mean because you're the right person to be a firefighter but not a baker. 7 of flowers is saying dont back down from the things you KNOW you are right in, but when someone makes a valid point. take it, it can help you. being passionate is a good thing, but dont be ignorant.

Hii lovely! I'm a very anxious person, so I'm so sorry if I come across as awkward in any way shape or form, I tend to be more of a lurker, but I'm trying to get better at interacting!!

First of all, your Bridgerton fic is??? SO?? GOOD??? The way you portray all the characters, the language, the settings, everything is just absolutely chef's kiss!! Hi! I wanted to ask a question and I wasn’t sure if it was too personal or not so just ignore this is you’d rather not answer, but I was wondering if you went to art school or got a degree in it? I really want to start learning and maybe one day start a career in animation and wasn’t sure whether I should spend time and resources getting a degree. I know it’s going to be different for everybody and nothings a guarantee for this field but since I love your style and technical skill I was curious whether you had done that and what were your thoughts on it or if you are self-taught.

Ig I should quickly go through my art journey so you can have an overall look of why I went to art school lol.

So I'm from Vietnam. I think back in 2013 I went to a small art school in Singapore (they were the only one that gave me a scholarship). My major was 3D modeling actually, but during my final year, I realized I only wanted to draw characters for animation. I could already draw decently, so I just read The Silver Way book and built a character design portfolio on my own during this time. I was lucky I got a job as a concept artist at a small animation studio there so I learned a lot from the job. I also did a lot of self-learning and took Woulter Tulp's Expressive Character class on Schoolism.

Then after 3-ish years of working, I got sick of the tiny and dying animation industry in Singapore. I wanna do sth more than just preschool shows and I was severely underpaid lmao. So I quit my job and took the MA VisDev program at AAU. It's a little more affordable cuz u can do 1 year online and the second year on-site. The reason I went to this school even tho i could just take a VisDev class online was cuz i need the visa so i can try to break into the industry in the US.

Now back to your question. Is art school a must? No. Should you still take it? Maybe, depends on your situation. If you can afford it then hell yeah by all means. Art school is great cuz you have professors and peers to help guide you along the way so you won't get lost while trying to figure out your shit. And to have a few years just experimenting and focusing on art is a great experience. Plus you can make a lot of meaningful connections in school and it will help you a long way after you grad. But if you have to go into debt to go to art school, then don't. There are places like Schoolism, CGMA, and Warrior Art Camp where you can pick what class and from whom you wanna learn. If you are not from the US and wanna break into the industry here like me however, then yeah getting a degree is a better bet cuz you can use the student visa and OPT to hopefully get a job here (it's still very very hard tho ngl im struggling rn as we speak lmao). Also, you need a BA to work overseas so there's that too. The hard truth is studios prefer to hire locally than some rando from somewhere else and have to wait for them to relocate and shit, (unless you are exceptionally good and they'd do anything to have you, but that is super rare lol).

Even though I did go to art school, I have to say most of my skills are from self-study. It requires a lot of self-discipline but I'm pretty much obsessed with drawing and I draw everyday so it's not a problem for me. But my friend is not good at that, so she found art school/classes helped her better cuz there are deadlines and instructors to help guide her to reach her goal. So it depends on your learning style tbh.

There is this chart that can help you consider your options. Im sorry it's a very long answer, cuz yes everyone's experience is different. Feel free to drop me another ask if you still have anymore questions tho ^^

Edit: I must also add, though there are online classes and ways to self-learn animation,I do think it only truly benefit you if you know exactly what you wanna do in this industry (for example I already knew i wanna become a character designer for 2d/3D animation specifically so any books/classes i took I tailored it to fit my goal). If you are unsure what you wanna do, then maybe even a cheap animation course will do better, and then you can take extra online classes on the side.

I was gonna have BLU look like RED but with blue accessories instead of red, but I also wanted to see if I could change their fur colors depending on team, y'know, cause they're technically different people and all. That and I wanted to tinker with alternative fur colors, patterns, and eye colors slightly. I might tinker with them more.

I was also drawing Merasmus, Saxxton, and the Administrator, but I couldn't get them right, so I settled with this, for now, at least. I know there's only one Miss P, but I added her to both teams because idk it just felt fair.

Hello! I love your art so much! Your cult of the lamb stuff has really inspired me and has pumped me up and I’m trying to basically re learn how to draw again! Do you have any advice for a fellow artist and how to approach story telling? :D

anon its been like a good while since this message has been sent (I think? based off all the homophobic crown asks this was wedged btwn) and WAHHH im so happy for you, I hope youre enjoying your reentry into art C:

first and foremost, try to enjoy the process rather than the end result. a much wordier explanation in this post (X)

theres also the discipline aspect of it, you need to be pretty concious of balancing learning with enjoyment (and you can absolutley have that balance without thinking about it). but I find a lot of new/learning artists get easily discouraged when a piece doesnt pop out exactly how they imagined it. I have a secret, lets be realistic, none of my pieces do lol. expectation is the killer of art imo, just go with the flow of enjoyment and learn what you can to become better at it. get used to adapting often.

even if you arent always studying (dont make it boring for yourself now), just you constantly drawing will improve your art, but dont expect to notice an improvment with every piece, its an incremental process and youll have bad days. just focus on the journey not the destination is what im getting at.

REFERENCE!!! its a beautiful, beautiful thing, anyone telling you its cheating is a silly billy who needs to learn. look up artists you admire, try to figure out how they tackle a piece, examine photos that you think are beautiful. just collect different pieces of reference, and try making a piece based off of them, a fun excercise. it'll improve your art.

as for the story aspect of this, im ngl, Im still learning myself. my main rule of thumb is "if i want to see this, someone else out there will too." so dont get discouraged by thinking no one will want to see your story idea.

I'm constantly adding story ideas to my notes to save for later, idk bout you, but I WILL forget the idea if I dont write it down immediatley (built worse), and if you have a mental image of it make sure to add very vague stage direction to supplement it, dont get too detailed tho, youll be changing alot. if youre anything like me -pepaw brained- try to keep in the habit of that. some storyboarding tips for staging tips and reference (X)

from there, I'll take a key moment -money shot or emotional moment- of the story, and base the rest of the comic around that image -> how I tackle formatting and making a comic (X).

the best way to learn is by doing, and failing and learning from that. so dont sike yourself out when you get there and it doesnt turn out as expected, it might be something so much better, thats the fun of it (:

you always failed to notice the one girl admiring you though.

she had her eyes on you like you were a new art piece, examining your features from afar.

your hands were stuffed into both pockets of your half zipped up hoodie as you strolled across the floor, taking in each detail of every frame in front of you.

she came here just as often as you did, using it as an excuse to catch glimpses of you.

the girl was anxious and fidgety compared to your somber and peaceful demeanor. her antsy energy collided with your tranquil one across the room as she worked up the courage to come up to you and start a conversation.

thoughts of a public rejection and humiliation clouded her mind and filled her ears with responses that haven’t even been uttered yet, but nonetheless, she had a little hope that it could go well.

her hands were clammy as she rubbed them together restlessly, the sound of her heart beating at the speed of light replacing the previous scenarios.

she felt her footsteps grow heavier with every step she took closer to you, approaching you like you were a radioactive substance.

you stopped in front of a piece that intrigued you — it was one the artist left for you to interpret in different ways, just how you liked it.

as you studied the meanings of the painting, you looked to your left and saw a pretty girl standing next to you.

she was shorter, her long hair covering some of her features, and her simple dress outfit with a black coat over it drawing a smile out of you.

the girl turned her head to you and froze seeing your smile, awkwardly smiling back and shying her face away.

you watched her slightly rock back and forth on her heels and glue her eyes to the wood floor below you, wondering what’s got her so worked up.

“i really love this piece. i love the way the artist has multiple things going on to make one big picture. what do you think?”, you blurted out to fill the silence.

the girl shot her head up and flipped her gaze between you and the piece on the wall which she couldn’t care less for right now, hurriedly looking for something she can relate with.

“y-yeah, i really like the.. the details.. and the way you can see a different like scene.. if you just look at it from a different perspective.”, the girl was visibly nervous, her tone further proving it.

“exactly! i think perspective is so important in art. it shapes your view of every work you come across and how it should be interpreted, you know?”

you were glad to have someone you could share your love in art with, even if she’s a little confusingly timid.

the girl cleared her throat and nodded her head excessively, “right yeah, i know, it’s a different meaning for everyone. for me i think the piece represents the beauty of falling in love and how it unfolds.”

you smiled and tilted your head curiously, her response being exactly the one you wanted to hear.

“wow, that’s actually crazy”, you said, laughing slightly.

“what is?”, the girl answered hesitantly.

“i see the piece the exact same way. the way it shows the first stages of falling in love with someone. like here’s the infatuation stage and the euphoria of it. that’s why this part is a little messy”, you slid one hand out of your pocket to point at the area you were talking about, “it represents the blurry feeling you get when you’re in that state.”

you turned to look at the girl and observed her reaction, stuffing your hand back into the pocket it was in.

she was already staring at you when you looked back, probably not even focused on anything you just said.

she smiled and silently agreed with you, nodding her head again and scanning her eyes over your face — almost like she was in some sort of infatuation stage.

“yeah.. i feel the same way.”, her doe eyes locked onto yours, entrancing you.

there was a pause in the air, both of you only focused on each other.

“i’m.. i’m y/n.”

you turned your body to fully face her, holding out your hand to shake hers.

she reached her own hand up to meet with yours, the both of you grasping each other in a firm handshake.

“i’m chaeyoung.”

your eyes didn’t leave hers yet, too scared they might disappear if you looked away.

“it’s nice to meet you, chaeyoung.”

chaeyoung’s hands were soft and warm, but not too warm and not too cold either.

she let her grip on your hand go, ending the handshake, but you wished it didn’t end there.

“it’s nice to meet you too, y/n. would you maybe wanna.. grab a coffee with me? there’s a small cafe just down the street.”, chaeyoung almost regretted asking, mentally punching herself to prepare for your rejection.

“yeah! i would love to.”

she raised her eyebrows slightly in shock, shaking her head to refocus.

“okay.. okay! come on, i’ll lead us there.”, she said, motioning for you to follow her.

as you two walked down the street, you both engaged in light small talk, getting to know each other beyond your shared love for art.

“so.. do you come to the museum often?”

of course chaeyoung knew you came often. every friday at around 12 pm. she just didn’t wanna look like some complete freak who stalked you.

“yeah i do actually, i come during my lunch break since i work not too far from here. what about you?”

“i go sometimes to destress from work and whatnot, it’s a nice way to get my mind off of things i guess.”, she said, shrugging.

you hummed in response, slightly upset that she seemed to have a lot on her shoulders.

the two of you arrived at the entrance of the cafe, chaeyoung speeding up a bit to open the door for you.

you giggled at her kind gesture, thanking her and holding the door for her on your way in.

as you ordered your drink at the counter, she was just as attentive as the barista taking your order, silently telling herself to memorize it and bring it for you the next time you meet.

you two sat down at a table in a far corner, sipping your drinks and continuing your conversation beforehand.

when you got lost in explaining some work drama to chaeyoung, she pulled out a pen and started scribbling on a blank napkin.

after you finished your rambling and looked at chaeyoung, you saw her constantly looking up at you and back down to her napkin, her pen moving skillfully.

“okay, done! sorry, you just looked really pretty, i had to draw this moment before it went away.”

chaeyoung slid the napkin across the table and you finally got to see what she had been working on when you were going off about your dumb coworker.

it was a sketch of you, arm on the table with your chin resting on your palm. she managed to perfectly capture the way your hair was styled, the way your smile shined, even down to the rings you wore on your fingers.

“wow, chaeyoung this is amazing.. how did you even draw this so fast?”, you said, amazed at her skill as you examined the intricate details she put into it.

“it’s pretty easy when your muse is nice to look at.”

you couldn’t control your burning cheeks and forming smile at her flirty remarks anymore, tilting your head down to hide your face.

chaeyoung wasn’t lying either. she thought you were the prettiest girl she had ever laid eyes on, and she was glad she finally took her chance and talked to you.

hearing your passion about art was the cutest thing ever to her. your genuine love for it attracted her to you more than she could imagine.

she wanted to know everything about you.

more than just the way you perceived the world, more than your coffee order, more than what irritated you about incompetent people at work.

she wanted to know what made you feel most loved. what it would be like to come home to you.

“whatever.. my turn to draw you now.”, you said, still giggling like an idiot.

you reached over to grab her pen off the table and took the napkin from under your cup to scribble your own sketch of her.

chaeyoung watched you patiently and noticed the way you hid your “drawing” with your free hand, slightly furrowing her eyebrows in confusion.

“aaand done! do you like it?”

you slid your napkin over to chaeyoung and observed her as she looked over the piece of paper.

the fact is, you didn’t draw anything special at all.

your idea of a sketch of chaeyoung was writing your phone number down and drawing hearts and smiley faces everywhere.

chaeyoung broke out into laughter at your antics, rubbing her thumb over the material.

“i do, i really like it.”

you reached into your pocket to check the time on your phone, realizing you had about 10 minutes to walk back to work.

slightly saddened, you put your phone away and held your face in both of your hands on the table this time, beaming at chaeyoung.

“well i have to get back to work, but make sure you interpret that drawing reeeally carefully, it’s an important one.”, you said, scooting your chair back to stand up and grabbing your drink.

“oh i will, don’t worry. i’ll be sure to consider every single detail.”, chaeyoung said as she watched you grab your things.

you laughed at her playing along, “i’ll see you next friday then?”

chaeyoung smiled and dropped her hands to her lap, still holding onto your art piece.

“next friday it is.”

you nodded and smiled at chaeyoung one last time, walking towards the door and looking back to mouth a “call me” and gesture a phone with your pinky and pointer fingers.

chaeyoung chuckled and watched as you headed back to your regular life.

when you completely disappeared from view out the window, chaeyoung drew her eyes back to the napkin in her lap, inspecting it again and scoffing to herself with a big smile on her face.

moments of your hour together flashed through her mind, making her blush as she pulled out her phone and went to her messages.

she typed your number in, making sure she didn’t miss a single digit.

chaeyoung was twiddling her thumbs over her screen, figuring out the perfect thing to text you.

she tapped the sides of her phone while she attempted to think of something, slowly growing frustrated with herself.

but oh boy im fuckin cooking with louie over here. ive said before that chapter 6 is gonna be very much an And Now For Something Completely Different moment, but that's not coming out for A While because i haven't even started it yet. BUT! the current project im working on — TITLE DROP! — sweet wine, starshine is going to be a kind of retrospective looking back on a lot of the stuff that happened over the Meat of DLD but especially chapter 5. this man is, uh, Not gonna be happy but he's gonna get Closure. and that's almost as good. (GENUINELY a shame that the romcom universe is technically noncanon for thematic reasons, calling it "the AU where you're allowed to live" is incredibly bleak but i won't even be able to explain for a long long time why it Is Required to be an AU.) i don't really know when anyone should expect this to be published but ive made a SHIT ton of progress on it over the weekend with how much support has been rolling in it's crazy.

and here's just hoping that i keep on a hot streak with my character interpretations! you might have already been passed this through the grapevine, but my next big project after i finish DLD is gonna be catch/cradle like i said in the A/N, and the two major pov characters for that are going to be lamella and yonny, which is certainly A Pair Of Characters To Characterize. i have Images Of Them In My Mind but we'll see whether they stand up to scrutiny in the very slightly more grounded take ive had on things so far.
