What do you think about Diabellstarr so far

I've got a few thoughts! I'll share them under a readmore. For reference to the uninitiated, Diabellstar the Black Witch is a Yu-Gi-Oh! card. It's powerful, new, expensive, and supposedly is going to kick off a new Yu-Gi-Oh! storyline, exclusively told through card art. (This has happened a few times before, though most recently, with the Albaz and Visas Starfrost storylines, they've taken about three years to complete.) It looks like this one is going to be following an outlaw on the hunt for treasure, and is the first girl MC that I've seen from a recent card storyline.

First, a quick overview of who Diabellstarr is, and what she does.

Diabellstar the Black Witch is a 2500/2000 7-star monster, with the effect below.

You can Special Summon this card (from your hand) by sending 1 card from your hand or field to the GY. You can only Special Summon "Diabellstar the Black Witch" once per turn this way. You can only use each of the following effects of "Diabellstar the Black Witch" once per turn. If this card is Normal or Special Summoned: You can Set 1 "Sinful Spoils" Spell/Trap directly from your Deck. During your opponent's turn, if this card is sent from its owner's hand or field to the GY: You can send 1 card from your hand or field to the GY, and if you do, Special Summon this card.

So, in a vacuum, without knowing what the 'Sinful Spoils' cards, are-- Not a bad monster. A free level 7 body, 100 ATK higher than Kashtira Fenrir, with an ability to come back to the board, and plus on summon. An important distinction about this effect, though, is the 'sending' from hand or field to the graveyard isn't cost. For her first effect, it's part of the summoning condition, meaning it can't be interrupted, and for her second effect, there's no semi-colon. This just means you won't be caught in a situation where you go negative to bring her out, only to get stopped. Not bad, but we really need to know what those 'Sinful Spoils' cards do, to make any value judgement. Let's take a look, shall we?

Sinful Spoils of Subversion - Snake-Eye is a normal spell card, with the following text.

Target 1 face-up monster on the field; place it face-up in its owner's Spell & Trap Zone as a Continuous Spell. You can only activate 1 "Sinful Spoils of Subversion - Snake-Eye" per turn.

This card has only one effect, and it's... Interesting. At first blush, it's a unique form of removal that most cards can't deal with -- Being placed in the Spell & Trap Zone isn't traditional removal, and only unaffected or untargetable cards could hope to dodge it, but it feels like there's probably better targets than this. Still -- Maybe a one-of, or a side-board option to have to deal with tricky decks you can't out.

Lore-wise, this appears to be what Diabellstar is after, the gem that is able to control other monsters to fight Diabellstar, and the object she either wants, or wants to destroy.

WANTED: Seeker of Sinful Spoils is a quick-play spell card, with the below effect. Add 1 "Diabellstar" monster from your Deck or GY to your hand. During your Main Phase: You can banish this card from your GY, then target 1 of your "Sinful Spoils" Spells/Traps that is banished or in your GY, except "WANTED: Seeker of Sinful Spoils"; place it on the bottom of the Deck, then draw 1 card. You can only use each effect of "WANTED: Seeker of Sinful Spoils" once per turn.

So, off the bat -- We're not going to be able to activate this card the same turn we set it with Diabellstar's effect, which is a big hit. Especially with the effect that we can see -- It's just an add. Not bad by any means, but it means you're going to want to see this in the opening grip to kickstart your plays, and not set it off Diabellstar's effect. Still, a free Reinforcement of the Army for an archetype is nothing to shake a stick at, especially with the second effect -- Recursion and a free draw is a great effect for a spell card to have, especially when it pluses you with its first effect anyways.

Lore-wise, I love this card. It's Diabellstar's wanted poster! There's even a line in the Age of Overlord Set intro where the announcer talks about how she'd like to lay-low in your deck for a little bit, if that's okay. Super cute.

Sinful Spoils of Doom - Rcilea is a quick play spell card, with the following effect.

Target 1 Level 7 or higher Spellcaster monster you control; apply the following effects. ● While face-up, that monster is unaffected by other monsters' effects this turn, and is sent to the GY during the Standby Phase of the next turn. ● All monsters your opponent currently controls lose ATK equal to the targeted monster's ATK, then if their ATK becomes 0 by this effect, destroy them. You can only activate 1 "Sinful Spoils of Doom - Rciela" per turn.

So, we're getting a card with two effects, with a once per turn activation. Keep in mind, cards that negate activations will allow this card to be played again, assuming you have another copy. The cost to target a level 7 or higher Spellcaster monster... Does in fact synergize with Dark Magician, yes, but it's obvious this is intended for use with Diabellstar. The first effect is... Okay? But has some inherent non-synergy with the fact that Diabellstar hitting the graveyard is actually okay, with her built-in-recursion effect, and there's nothing specific about her that makes her great, or worthwhile to keep around on the opponents turn. The second effect, however -- Not... Great, but not terrible. Because it's an attack-modifying effect, I believe it can trigger in the damage step, and if it's not set off of the effect of Diabellstar, (IE not known by your opponent), then it could be a semi-valuable series of pops for your opponents monsters. I could see this being a play.

Lore wise... I'm not sure what's going on here. It looks like Diabellstar has huge ass wings, and she's getting ready to fight a... Miasma of some sorts. Good for her. #girlwin.

Sinful Spoils of Betrayal - Silvera is a normal trap card with the following effect.

Send 1 "Diabellstar" monster from your hand or face-up field to the GY, then target 1 face-up card on the field; negate its effects. When your opponent activates a card or effect in response to your "Diabellstar" monster effect or your "Sinful Spoils" Spell/Trap Card or effect activation: You can banish this card from your GY; negate that opponent's effect. You can only use 1 "Sinful Spoils of Betrayal - Silvera" effect per turn, and only once that turn.

First things first - It's a trap card. Those are generally not great, even archetypal ones that plus you to infinity. Still, let's give it a look. The cost to send from face-up field... Sucks. It has non-synergy with the last card, and dies to a book of moon before you're ready to use the rest of the effect, but the fact it does send from hand means it synergizes with the WANTED at least. A targeted negate is pretty good, especially as an omni-negate. The second negate is even better -- Finding a way to cheat this into the graveyard, just to use the second negate, actually would be pretty good. This card, I'd argue, would border on playable if not for the strict hard-once-per-turn condition at the end.

Lore-wise, this kind of gives some light to what's going on in the previous card -- It looks like Diabellstar can use her effects to control that... Other dragon, to attack the blue dragon controlled by snake-eye. Cool!

Original Sinful Spoils - Snake-Eye is a normal spell card, with the below effect.

Send 1 other face-up card you control to the GY; Special Summon 1 Level 1 FIRE monster from your hand or Deck. You can banish this card from your GY, then target 1 "Snake-Eye" or "Diabellstar" monster in your GY; add 1 Level 1 FIRE monster from your Deck to your hand, then place the targeted monster on the bottom of the Deck. You can only use 1 "Original Sinful Spoils - Snake-Eye" effect per turn, and only once that turn.

So, with the first effect -- The cost is a bit steep. Requiring a face-up card likely means it'll be a monster, turn one, and can't be activated under shifter. Remember, though -- Because Diabellstar can set any sinful spoils card from deck to field, this is a good candidate. Since it's a spell card, it can be activated this turn, and we're already going to have a Diabellstar face up on our field to send, so that cost isn't too much. Now, factoring in the effect... Special summoning any level 1 FIRE from hand or deck. Wow. That's pretty good -- Notable level 1 fires include Jet Synchron, which will give you repeatable access to tuners for synchro summoning, a few monsters to support the Infernoble Knight archetype, and Rescue Ace - Fire Hydrant, to start any R-ACE plays. Considering the Diabellstar -> Snake-Eye -> LVL1 Fire combo only costs a single discard, and can start your plays off without falling prey to Droll & Lock Bird... Pretty good! Now let's read that second effect. Pretty good recursion, balanced out by the hard once per turn clause at the bottom -- It just means unless this card gets removed from the grave, you're likely going to be able to get another Level 1 FIRE monster on your next turn, as well as resetting your Diabellstar for the following turn as well.

Lore-wise, it looks like this card shows Diabellstar... Seemingly winning! Using her cool ass dragon and powers to kill the snake eye dead, and hopefully gain its power? All and all, an interesting set of cards, from a lore perspective.

We've got one more aspect to cover though, and it's not very fun. WANTED: Seeker of Sinful Spoils came out as a secret rare in AGOV, and Original Sinful Spoils - Snake Eye, came as an ultra rare in the same set. These look like the two best Sinful Spoils cards. The former is $80, the latter is $4, and Diabellstar is $20 (coming out in AGOV also as a secret rare), which means... A playset will easily get you into the $300 range. Ouch. This is a part of yugioh I'm not a huge fan of. While it's nice that the... Worse cards are all less than a dollar, and there is another printing of those three cards... They're all 25th century rares, which are much more expensive.

Which, obviously, sucks! The fact they're level-one-fire support, as mentioned before, can help synchro archetypes, rescue-ace, and infernoble knight, all three are very competitively viable! It also very much feels like we're gonna be seeing a sinful spoil level 1 fire monster in the future, and kidna guessing at what is gonna come up next is super neat. I'm also clearly a big fan of women, and I hope Konami pulls a dogmatika with her, and not an ice barrier :3

So, in conclusion -- I like Diabellstar! It interacts with the game in a very interesting way, it has some clear setup for a cool storyline in the future, and also has some neat gameplay loops. It feels balanced, it feels interesting... I just wish it was cheaper :)

I tend to alternate what I use for him when not in the book, and even in the book he shrugs off a couple "she's." And there's actually not any romance in that one; Tiadane and my deuteragonist's relationship is platonically weird in that one. I'm really sorry for just asssuming Tiadane to be a guy. On the other hand I love when fantasy worlds explore cultures that dont have the same understanding of gender as us. I feel it isnt done enough and where it is atempted its never done with the enough care.

Also when I said 'relationships' I didn't mean them as explicit romantic ones. I'm a big fan of interesting dynamics and I dont believe they always have to be romantic to get me interested. There are so many ways humans interact with one another. That is whats most facinating to me.

sort of. I asked my mum and she listed a few people but the main one is a very hedonistic character from a book.so that’s a fun role to fill. the other people are a bit more daunting in their accomplishments.

not very often, I guess. ive been told I am very difficult to read if im telling a joke or not. especially sarcasm. im mostly sarcastic when im being mean rather than funny. I guess im more likely to be dry?

I honestly have no clue. definitely not their shoes. and probably not their face because I can never remember what people look like. I sat in a car with my driving instructor for months but could not tell you what he looked like. physically, I probably notice hair and clothes first? but otherwise if im meeting someone new I just notice whether they talk to me or not and how they hold a conversation.

im a wimp and I dont like scary movies. so I guess I prefer happy endings, although I dont mind some tragedy. for tv I almost exclusively watch comedies. i dont watch a lot of films so i’ll mostly watch what other people want. im a fan of rewatching, so it is rare I will willingly watch something new on my own. as for books, ill read anything! but especially interesting gothic classics and translated books. I like slice of life and anything with great world building. not a huge fan of ya probably because it was all I read when I was younger so I got a bit bored of it.

I never know how to answer that. im decent at various things but nothing in particular. if you showed me a relatively common uk bug I think I would be able to id it.

im into entymology. I like taking pictures of bugs and recording their species. there are other things I do, but im hesitant to call them hobbies because I dont do them that regularly.

I dont play sport regularly. did the usual sports at school. (I did some more interesting stuff but im trying to be humble. im big into baseball - Ive got a batting average of .328, have 118 home runs and batted in 1014 runs. im also in the baseball hall of fame. that’s right guys, im baseball superstar wade boggs. 4. piece you wish got more love?

Ive found from experience that original art tends to not do very well on social media, which kind of makes me sad. It's not much of a problem for me (because most of the stuff i post is fanart anyways) but i can't help but think that part of the reason i rarely ever draw original pieces or make OCs is because of the lack of feedback i get on social media. I know tumblr is supposed to be the fandom website, and maybe id have a different experience on another site, but it is disappointing when i post something original that I'm very proud of and it barely manages to get more than 20 notes, whereas something i like less easily surpasses 100 just because of the tags i put on it. i think the most recent example of this is this piece, which admittedly did get quite a few notes for an original piece, but definitely would have gotten more had it been fanart of the same caliber. this is also not to blame anyone or make anyone feel bad about not reblogging original art (god knows im guilty of that too, and art piggybacking off the popularity of other works of art are of course gonna get more notes), its just something ive noticed from my time on social media.

10. how do you deal with artblock?

i dont get art block very often, but when i do, its ANNOYING. it mostly manifests in me having a bunch of motivation for a part of my process that i cant get to without doing the stuff i have no desire to do (does that make any sense?). like, ill have a strong urge to render an artwork, but no ongoing WIPs that are at that stage, meaning i would have to sketch and color and shade a whole new piece before i could satiate that urge, or do the steps out of order which could mess up the flow and end look of a project. when i get like this, i find its best to try and translate those desires into different activities and take a step away from art. for example:

if i want to sketch, but nothing comes out right digitally, ill find a scrap piece of paper and a crappy pen and make thumbnails until i cant think of any other iterations of the ideas in my head. if one of them turns out good, ill take a picture and transfer it into my software, but only go over it a day or so later so i can have fresh eyes.

if i want to color, but i have no sketches currently ready for coloring, ill go into my photo editing program, find some random old photos that i never edited, and post-process them until i get something im happy with.

if i want to shade, but have no colored artworks ready for that, ill usually do a study of a photo ive taken, because most of the time me shading is really me wanting to see how light and shadow interact in certain scenarios. i actually did a whole AP portfolio on that because i liked shading and lighting so much!

if i want to render, but ive got no pieces ready for rendering, i find its easiest just to find a tedious activity where i can be a perfectionist but also feel like im the smartest person in the world. this generally turns into me cooking some big meal because its constantly engaging but also not that difficult. i know its probably weird for it to not have anything to do with art but this is just what works best for me, and i get the bonus of a nice meal at the end of it!

if i get the more classic kind of art block where everything sucks and nothing i make is good, i find its best to go back to the media that inspires me to make art, and not worry too much about having made something by the end of it. generally the media that inspires me ends up, well, inspiring me, and i can remind myself that art is a voluntary practice that i do because its fun, not because i want something out of it. if it doesnt manage to inspire me, thats okay, i can just tell myself im taking a break and live life for a bit.

2:51 | oh wow the "fixing art" thing. i dont think this is a thing anymore but it definitely was a big thing back in 2019! the thing is im quite neutral on it because a lot of artists dont like their work being edited but on the other hand if you dont like when people put the correct skintones on your art then maybe you should colour it right the first time

i will say though if you see cool art of like dark choco or espresso and its whitewashed and u wanna edit it so its not and u keep it to yourself then idc thats fine to me. the grey area is when it comes to characters like moonlight or alchemist, who's skintone is quite difficult to pull off in some artstyles. a lot of the examples in the video use people like cherry blossom or cotton candy who don't quite fit in the same category but are usually targets of this anyway

a very simple fix is to just use a different colour but to not make them significantly lighter from how they look in canon, which alot of the examples you showed don't do. they all look pale as shit compared to what they actually look like ingame and thats why people complained about them

devsisters really love showcasing whitewashed art of their characters (they used to do it on their forums rarely but thats now gone) and recently they've been quite excited to dabble in the whitewashing themselves (keep in mind the others except from twizzly gummy don't really count as whitewashing but they're all significantly lighter than their regular appearance). its like a hobby or sumn. everytime they host a fanart contest i brace for god damn impact. and this has been a thing since FOREVER

speaking of race and ethnicity, lilacs costume (and redesign in general) is just... bad but i dont think they were even introduced at the time of this video. milk and yam WERE though and its extremely baffling to me how this went through an entire team/company and got greenlit. its insane how shit they are (if it was just yam on his own i wouldn't hate him as much, i still wouldn't like him tbh, but they decided to pair him up with a white saviour). would i call them racist though? ...idk? they've been moving funny recently cant lie

whitewashing is obvious why so i'll move on. some characters can be seen as lesbian coded (white choco and rose for having majority girl fans, sea fairy in general) and there are a few characters that explicitly aren't referred to by any pronouns (dark choco before the guild adventures, peppermint, ect.) which u dont see everyday in games. so yeah.. people care about these things because they like representation. who would've thought?

now im gonna be fucking real. the arguments over cookies ages were always annoying - the reason why the fandom has arguments about ages so much is because devsis REFUSES to tell us canon ages. think about it, majority of the "canonially confirmed" children in the game are from a child event that happened in LINE. thats a completely different company running the game. because of how character-heavy the game is, ships are a very big part of the fandom. i sincerely doubt theres anyone in the fandom who doesnt like any ship and at the time rarepairs were rly common. so when you've got a fandom who really likes to ship and developers that dont ever mention ages then you get a fucking mess. i dont know what sorbet shark or roll cakes age is and its pointless to even debate it because id rather just have the devs confirm it themselves (not like they ever will). and even for the one singular time they did specify that one of the characters was a child, they still showcased fanart of said kid being shipped with an adult anyway

total number of completed works: 18! wow i know thats not a lot in the grand scheme of things but its more than i was expecting considering last January i was proud of myself for posting 2 fics 😭

total word count: on ao3, 65,292! but thats not including wattpad or wips ive done this year, so hold on one moment.... 

oh... oh wow... i have more words in wips than i do in posted works and it comes to about a whopping 67,271 words but thats not including stuff in my notes app or on paper because im too lazy to go through that lmao

but anyway that puts the rough total at... 132,563 words holy crap i need to get a life-

looking back did you write more, less, or the expected amount of fic this year?: MORE DEFINITELY MORE LAKSDJLJDS,F i didnt really expect to write at all really so yeah definitely a lot more

your own favorite story of this year?: dont- dont ask me to choose something i am the most indecisive person i know- especially when all the options are bad ones

did you take any writing risks this year?: um id say posting my writing to begin with? considering im mortified of people finding out about this lmao (eg. this summer when my older brother sent this text to me after finding my wattpad, tumblr, and ao3: “so I just found out you’re a fucking nerd. the jig is up.” with a screenshot of my tumblr page and i wanted to either kill my brother or myself but unfortunately chose to do neither and just panicked by digging up blackmail to hang over his head 🤩

do you have any fanfic goals for the new year?: idk, nothing too big probably, but i really really really want to finish some of the wips im super excited about, like this angsty modern au one shot i started like last feb/march featuring anakin and ahsoka that i have sitting in my google docs with no discernible plot yet and 16,110 words 

most popular story of the year?: in terms of kudos/hits, lean on me (but let me laugh, first). basically, ahsoka purrs in her sleep, and everyone finds it very amusing (except for her). ill be honest i dont like this one; i dont like the writing but ig people seem to like it well enough?? somehow the only angst-free fic i wrote is my most popular and idk how that tracks but it does ig

in terms of how people have received my fics, ive been told by people that they like it’s not good grief (but it’s better) which is just anakin and ahsoka post wrong jedi arc (and angst, per usual)

i’ve seen the discussion going back and forth on boundaries and sexual objectification, and i don’t have much to add to the conversation other than to say everyone is allowed to determine their OWN ‘lines’ and just because we don’t vocalize them doesn’t make them any less valid. but here’s the limits i set for my blog if anyone feels it is important for them to know (<3):

personally I consider ‘characters’ fair game for anything goes, with ‘public personas’ a little more iffy. ‘RPF’ isn’t new - it just takes on a new more accessible/visible form nowadays. i remember reading my first fic about a ‘real person’ back in my LOTR fandom days - it was a story in first person perspective about the main character meeting orlando bloom on a plane before he was ‘famous’. like a lot of these types of stories, it wasnt so much about the person as it was about the meet cute. the actor was just a convenient placeholder with a handsome face and some personality quirks thrown in to make the romance/dialogue more specific. i personally dont read much xReader fic nowadays, but mostly only cause i’m an old fart who can’t relate to the ‘you’ format. i miss the good old days when people actually created OC’s and then inserted them into things LOL. but also LOL if you think i’ve gone an entire year of quarantine without some imagined personal fantasies of joe mazzello (or steve aoki in the years before)(ramilicious can attest to this. she can also attest to most of these fantasies ending in friendship rather than anything explicit cause that’s just how i roll these days lol). the line i draw is i would never post these types of fics in a place where the subject could accidentally find them - you have to go looking for this stuff on tumblr, most fics are given explicit ratings and under read-mores. with the blacklist tags it’s pretty easy to filter things out. its even easier to add filters to ao3 searches. i am NOT going to do something like message steve aoki and say ‘yeah i watched that movie Ibiza like five times, here is my 1k fic where you’re the dj and i’m the one night stand’. but obviously people still enjoy imagining scenarios like these otherwise movies like Ibiza wouldn’t exist?

for art, i consider anything already on display up for grabs, we all know a certain person’s ass is all over the place...all you have to do is google ‘need for speed’ and rami’s name. HOWEVER, in the case of actors i personally would not draw anything more explicit than what’s already there. i’m not gonna draw full frontal nudity for rami (unless he gifts us with it in a movie, i suppose) or anyone. this is 100% a personal choice for me. 

i was a sophomore or junior in college when i volunteered as a figure drawing monitor where i’d time the nude model’s poses and help them set up the stage and lighting and such. there was this one guy in his mid forties probably, a regular who came every week, and i always thought of him fondly till one day (the day after i ran into my Hot Programming TA during dinner and later sent him an email begging him to go on a date with me because i was desperate for kissing experience)(and Hot Programming TA emailed me back within minutes saying yes) this artist guy who i saw all the time and thought i knew fairly well, decided to draw me instead of the model. which would have been fine except he drew me naked. i was NOT naked at the time, i was wearing a shirt, and a bra, and a full prairie skirt with alternating calico and floral patterns. he drew what he imagined was underneath all that. he came up to me after the figure drawing session and showed me his drawings and told me i had been ‘glowing’ and my response was to laugh it off awkwardly and get the hell out of there as soon as i gave the model their pay check. but inwardly i was thinking a) i was NOT glowing for this creepy man twice my age and b) i did NOT give him consent to sexualize my body under my clothes and then SHOW me that objectification. i never said anything to him or anything else, i continued to be the monitor, and i continued to field off creepy advances from him including multiple job offers, but when i finally realized i could just...stop..and i passed the student volunteer monitor job on to my friend naeem, i also realized that what that older male artist did was NOT ok in my book. and it was probably not something he would do while naeem was monitoring.

nowadays im working in an industry that regularly objectifies female bodies. in the past year alone i have had to deal with requests to make breasts bigger, i have been given character rigs that in addition to the usual elbow, knee, and spine joints also have ‘nipple’ joints but ONLY for the women (to make them jiggle for animation), every time i send out a female pose i get it back with notes that push it further into the sexy type of body language reserved for women (twist the spine more! sway the back more! give it ‘energy!’), i have been told to erase wrinkles and fat and pores but ONLY for the women (men you ADD pores bc realism! and manliness!) and this is all me working for a company that is actually fairly progressive in terms of sexism compared to OTHER studios.

like it or not, sexual objectification is a huge part of specifically women’s lives and how we react to that is our business. for me, turning the tables and putting men on display feels like fair’s fair. i cant stop the men from doing it, so if i want to enjoy sexualizing male bodies, damn it im gonna! like dang it, boy do i want to send steve aoki a thank you note every time he posts a video of himself doing those ice baths during the sunset golden hour bc holy shit gorgeous or working out in his gym wearing VERY little clothes, but i dont because i know what its like when someone imposes their personal fantasies on the subject. or, god, there was that time i had to unfollow nicole’s insta for a while bc i had a very explicit dream about her and realized, shit, i need to take a break and get my emotions under control before i can refollow. and god some of the stuff i see dudes sending her during her live videos on mental illness/meditation is TOTALLY gross and not something they should be confronting her with. and she’s not even ‘famous’ famous. or how some fans send their idols explicit direct messages without consent. THAT feels inappropriate to me.

a part of me feels like i shouldn’t have to defend this. men don’t. they’re even encouraged in mass media to sexualize women. but i also recognize the importance of talking about consent. the importance of recognizing that a celebrity deserves to have their boundaries respected. these are my lines in fandom. other people have different lines they won’t cross, and that’s okay to me. i block or blacklist any blogs or tags i think go over the top.

heck, even in fandom-only spaces i still try to keep my own more sexual fantasies off this blog and only in private messages with my friends and mutuals, and i feel like that might come across as unintentionally prudish or judgmental sometimes. i’m not ‘horny on main’ very often. but like...every time i reblog that particular ‘washing machine’ gif of joe mazzello am i thinking about him naked and thinking about how he’s got very loooooong feet, and ‘gee i wonder if that means /other/ things are Too Big for my tastes’ but also ‘gosh wouldnt that make a pretty picture to draw’???? hell yeah.
