hihi not a creature au ask sorry but do u have any tips to improving art skills? /gen, second question how did u get into digital art?
dont be sorry the asks are for anything really
my biggest tip is pretty boring and has been said a billion times probably but you u fortunately need to do the boring basics. you can go anywhere you want from there and its gonna be much easier. ex. - drawing alot of boring 3d shapes in dofferent types of perspective. boom now you can draw backgrounds. drawing from models in realism (live ones are better but photos are great too). boom now you have the skill and knowledge on how the human body works and can play around with it to develop ur own art style. greyscale form practice (like shading cubes or drapery or still life). boom u understand how light and shadow works. the hardest thing really (imo) is learning colour. me personally, traditional painting (acrylic, oil, guache, tempera) helped the most (again ALOT of still life). but learning colour theory, or just fucking around with whatever colour medium you like until it looks good is also very helpful. so again basics are really important.
next thing is, use resources. theres so many free art resources out there and theyre very helpful. my personal fav lately are quickposes and david finch on youtube. use refs, if needed take ur own.
also mindset stuff like being okay with making "bad" drawings. shitty sketches, wierd colour xombinations, wonky perspective. making art is not abt not making mistakes, but abt making them and learning from them cuz if u dont try ull never get it right, even if its bad at first. also always go from overall to detail. make 5 minute sketches, that forces u to focus on form and translatinf the overall idea more than hyperfocusing on detail. and ofc alot of consistent practice. draw every day, whether its a 5 min aketch or something more polished. (im gonna attach some of my oractice sketches so u get the idea of what im talking abt cuz i feel like im not the best at explainin)

as for digital art, i was first drawing on a regular ass samsung tablet with a pen wrapped in tin foil (it makes it work like a stylus fun fact) on ibis paint which is free and honestly it was great. on thing is if ur starting digital get some free simple program cuz if u try to start with something thats "industry standard" its just making ur life harder cuz on top of learning how to draw oj a tablet, you have to learn the software, and u dont need that when u start. i got my actual drawing tablwt after like two years and i was working in krita (also free and really good). now i work in csp and its amazing but theres alot going on and it is pricey (but well worth it imo) digital is easier in alot of ways but i still recommand learning traditionally

sorry for the shitty photo quality im bad at posting traditional art. but thats what im talking abt these are like 10-15 min each, focusing on form and the overall and not going into much detail

Could you show your sketching process? Like what base skeletons you use for the characters to make it so dynamic? Maybe using cuddy x cameron or hilson :)
Of course!! This is going to be long winded so Ill put this under the cut hahah
Im gonna follow my process chronologically with a few of my works to explain my different approaches!
HILSON
So especially for poses including two people i often use an app on my phone called "Magic Poser". This helps me understand the perspective and scale of the characters a bit better since this is something I struggle with. So ill take the models and pose them how I want them. What this app REALLY helps me with light sources since that is customizable too^^
So then I enter a phase where I am studying the pose. For this drawing I did it traditionally. first thing i do is break down the figures volumetrically, which is a figure drawing method where you break down the figure into simple box like forms. This helps me gain an understanding of how the shapes are interacting with space.
After that, I draw over the forms adding things like hair and clothes and building the specific face/body shapes of the character.

I do also use the little "circles" to mark joints when im drawing fast!
After that I scan the pencil sketch I do into Krita, and follow my work to get some lineart!.
CAMCUDDY
This one was a similar process, but i ported the reference image straight into my drawing program.
After that i do a volumetric sketch over the reference to break it down.
And then i do a more creative pass where i make these boxy dolls look more like the characters im trying to draw!
from there i do a final line art pass, and then i sit back..... and stare at it..... because even though model references SEEM fool-proof there are often things that just dont look right! Its really important to remember to not use those kinds of references as gospel, it should be a convenience and assistance rather than a crutch. So ill often go in and change things, either outright erasing and redrawing or using the warp tool to move stuff around! These models are only so helpful if once ur done you look at the drawing and it just looks straight doo doo lol.
FREESTYLE
While I do use models alot for something i want to draw really fast, its important to not rely on them! That can make your art become super rigid if you don't push yourself.
For drawings I approach without, i kinda go buck wild! Here on this one you'll see i kind of blend my volumetric phase with my detailing phase:
With these looser drawings i focus on shape and gesture. Then ill just do a final cleaning up pass for the line art.
I have a really fast and dirty drawing style that doesnt always lend itself to "perfect anatomy", but im far more concerned with visual appeal rather than realism.
Alot of the confidence I have with anatomy comes from yearssssss of drawing casually, and my classical study in college!

RESOURCES
I do really recommend some level of classical study when it comes to drawing the figure! Here are some video's on it I have watched and studied during my time in college that I really recommend:

I hope this was helpful!! haha sorry i get really nerdy about drawing process :))) If you have any additional questions let me know!

Congratulations on the 1k! <3
I'm currently getting used to drawing digitally and was wondering what kind of drawing tool (screen tablet) and software you're using?
Keep up the amazing work, your art is gorgeous!
Hiii :D thank you so much!! <3 I shall answer all your questions
As always though, I would like to preface my answers by saying the tools don't make the artist, you don't need an expensive tablet or industry standard software. What you really need is time, and practice!! It took me years to find programs and devices im happy with, and these probably wont be the same in a couple years time.
That being said, I have recently switched over to a Huion KAMVAS pro 16 ,which has a very large pen display. Personally I would recommend a smaller screen if you want to be able to take yours with you haha.
My tablet is also not touchscreen, which you do get used to if you're transferring from something with touchscreen (like i did), but i should remind you to check when youre buying because i didn't!!
Mine is a pretty expensive pen display, It was a gift, but huion does also have some smaller, more affordable options.
I have also used a Wacom Intuos pen tablet, i found it a harder learning curve to use a tablet (the ones with no screen) but they are certainly viable options, and usually much more affordable if you're just starting out :)
Software
Currently I am using clip studio paint! If you (or anyone really) would like a more detailed explanation of the program, because it can be a little overwhelming, i could put one together!
I love csp so much, there is a subscription service, but I bought a one time payment version, meaning I haven't technically got the most up to date version. I would recommend the one time purchases, I have never felt as though I am missing out. Although if you would like to use its animation feature at some point, make sure you get a version with that included! They seem to have alot of plans, so maybe one will suit you!
There are also some stellar free software i have used and can highly recommend though! If you would like to practice digital art before buying a software
Krita is an excellent starting point, it also has a free and pretty decent animation feature!
I have also tried paint tool SAI , it has a simple ui and i think the more streamlined software is a good option for beginners
when I was younger i used GIMP often, although i dont believe it is technically made for digital art specifically

hey! i love your art and was wondering what kinds of brushes you used to achieve the look of some of your recent pieces (namely, the latest one, at the time this ask was sent) i just love the texture so much! feel free to delete this ask if you'd rather not respond though, apologies if this sounds rude!
uhhhhhh the texture ur talking about is probably from this brush. ive been using it alot lately. (the art program i use is krita btw)
but tbh i was in a trance or something when i made that drawing i dont even remember making it. i just remember finishing it and being like ok. post.
#also ur soo silly for thinking anything in ur ask could be interpreted as rude...#its a nice ask thank u
