@heartfeltletters-written asked me 💥 How do you feel about criticism? and it felt like something that needed its own post, so here goes: the hypocrisy of critics in modern fandoms, an essay.
Criticism. I don't like getting it or giving it when it comes to writing. I struggle to even gently give it to friends, even when they ask me what I think of their work. Writing is such a personal thing that we pour our heart and soul into and like you say, many criticisms aren't necessarily valid. By that I mean, there's a difference between "Amy you use em dashes a lot babe" (I do) and "This story would have been so much better if Remi were a virgin" (actual criticism I have received, lmao).
Unlike traditional authors, we will never make money from this, we do it for the love of it and it's time we will never get back. For some of us, it's time we could be working on our own original manuscripts too. I don't think people who give the second type of criticism are writers, generally. They don't understand the craft and what goes into it. Whenever I post and someone says a chapter was short or they immediately ask when the next one is, and that's all they say, I die inside a little. I try not to take it personally, but it's hard.
Personally, I think fandom behaviour is getting worse and that flows over into our comment sections and tumblr asks. I have a whole other dissertation on this that we’ll call ‘the slow death of fandom as we know it: an essay’, but that’s perhaps for another post. I don’t know how welcomed that commentary would be.
You said the word ‘entitled’ in your original ask and I think that’s spot on. People have become more entitled in general and downright rude (which is not restricted to online spaces, by the way). I write for ACOTAR, but you’ve never seen me discuss it here because no matter what you say in that regard, you can’t win. Someone will always attack you and I do mean attack. Even in regards to Fourth Wing, I don't talk about my opinions a lot outside of my own little bubble of friends and readers.
And that's the kicker to this whole conversation, really. If I were to criticise Iron Flame/RY everyone would jump down my throat (as has happened on other platforms), even though I'd never say it to her face. Do I stand by my opinions? Absolutely. But it would be rude to tell her them, unless asked. I’m not allowed to (validly) criticise certain elements of her story, a published novel, without being attacked for it, but those same people are fine criticising my work directly to me. Hypocrisy at its finest.
There’s a new influx of people to fandom spaces who are completely unwilling to integrate and completely unwilling to be kind. You mentioned those who criticised your work could have saved themselves the trouble and read the tags, but the thing is: they don’t want to. They can’t be bothered to take five seconds and figure out how they work, to curate their own experience, because that’s what half these people are like. They want an algorithm to do it for them, gods help us.
For me, personally, I'm my biggest critic. I also have raging generalised anxiety, so just posting on the internet is enough to send me spiralling (seriously, I feel sick just typing this out). It's very, very out of my comfort zone and I've been very, very lucky so far to have cultivated the readership I have, full of very like-minded people. Perhaps due to some of the darker content matter. But the second I get harshly worded comments, I get upset.
I don't say that to elicit sympathy, it's just a fact. I get upset about it the same way I would if you were standing in front of me saying it to my face, and for someone with depression and anxiety, that lingers. I'm getting better at laughing at them, but it's like when someone tells you they don't like you and your mum says "just ignore them"—not that easy, right?
So yeah, I don't mind if you want to tell me I use a lot of em dashes, or that I've used a word incorrectly in context, but I don't need to hear how much you hate original character fic when you could just use your last remaining braincell the back button and continue on with your day. Just be kind, is all I'm saying.

Get to Know Fanfic Authors
saw this on my dash, bringing it to the TDP corner of the world!
1. How many works on AO3? 74
2. Total AO3 word count? 479,641...approaching half a million!!!
3. Top 5 fics by kudos:
call it what you want
drawn to you
the very first night
next time
absolutely smitten (wild to me that this long abandoned modern au is on this list!)
4. What fandoms do you write for? Literally JUST The Dragon Prince :) (I tried my hand at some long-ago-deleted ATLA fic way back in the day.)
5. Do you respond to comments? I try, I swear, but...sometimes life is just. A lot.
6. Fic with the angsty ending? Uh...well...I left cursed unfinished and that's quite angsty. drawn to you is also quite angst but I don't think it really count as an angsty ending because obvs we know Rayla comes back <3 I guess love like you could be a contender since it ends right before the end of TTM...
7. Fic with the happiest ending? Most of them!!! I'm gonna go with like we're made of starlight because it's canonverse starscraper sandwiches and it doesn't get much happier than that!
8. Do you get hate? Not directly to me, but you know how Twitter can be...
9. Do you write smut? So very much.
10. Do you write crossovers? I haven't, no. I can't think of anything I'd be compelled to WRITE a crossover for. I could certainly be convinced to READ a crossover. (Am currently reading Sunrise on the Reaping and I would EAT UP a well-written rayllumy Hunger Games fic.)
11. Ever had a fic stolen? No, omg 😭
12. Ever had a fic translated? Also no.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic? Yesss!! @mistenflute and I have our ttm baby au!
14. All time favorite ship? It's rayllum, bby <3 kataang and robstar are some others I've gone through obsessions with!
15. WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? God, all of them? Just kidding. Maybe craft store au? I really doubt I'm going to finish it. It got too big for it's britches.
16. Writing strengths? sentence-to-sentence flow! I think I do a good job of making sure pretty much everything links together.
17. Writing weaknesses? uh. exploding word count? not very succinct? extremely verbose? Also...I literally don't write things with actual plot because I don't trust my creativity to not be stupid, lol. Character work, one-shots, and internal conflict, my beloveds!!!
18. Thoughts on mixed language dialogue? I don't think I have an opinion?
19. First fandom you wrote for? I wrote like two ATLA oneshots back in the day...
20. Favorite Fic you’ve ever written? I'm going to go for one not mentioned yet here, which is clean slate (post s3, pre ttm, rayllum in katolis). I really love call it what you want, as well, but clean slate is like...ALWAYS in the back of my mind. Sweet sweet katolis rayllum.....<3
Tagging 5 folks! @zuppizup @a-very-sparkly-nerd @jedidragonwarriorqueen @numptypylon @konmaao3

march fic recs!
this list is otherwise known as: mania_sama's fic recs: marvel/sambucky addition! because somehow, of the 76 fics i read this month, 74 of them were MCU. of those 74 MCU fics, 61 of them were tagged with sambucky (including platonic). i don't know what happened. hyperfixation really cannot be forced because i was absolutely blindsided by this. never cared for TFATWS. still don't, honestly, but somehow i'm here. please enjoy. i assume next month will be a little more... diverse... in the fandom and ship selection.

✎ When You Awake by Lunar_Pull ❧ explicit, 19.3k ❧ james "bucky" barnes/sam wilson ❧ sam has complete amnesia after falling from the sky in a terrible accident during a mission, written entirely in second person. i have said it once and I'll say it again: i find second person really interesting when it's not written from the "y/n" perspective. i like being placed directly in the shoes of a given character. the choice to use second person in this fic is an incredibly powerful one; you really do only know as much as sam knows, aside from what we've gleaned through the tags. we can only put things together as sam puts them together, which leads to some pretty crazy conversations, but also a pretty crazy amount of emotions that swell and tide all at once. i particularly enjoyed the beginning of the fic (though i love all of it); there is a segment where sam starts to truly remember some things for the first time, and he does it through natasha. he remembers loving her. i think it's important for love of all kinds to be showcased, and that intense feeling of love and loss for a friend cuts so, so deep in my heart. it's so well written. and then there is the development of bucky and sam's relationship, of bucky knowing more than what sam knows, but of sam also only knowing what sam knows. bucky's intense desire to do what is best for sam but also to return to what they had before the accident is a very hard emotion to parse through. the whole fic has its ups and down in terms of it being an emotional rollercoaster, but it is SO good and so worth the pain and the suffering that may happen along the way. ❧ You bite your lip nervously, hard enough to cut through the skin. You don’t want to say ‘who’s Sam?’ Because that’s crazy, that’s just insane. Youre Sam. Obviously , you’re Sam.
✎ TFATWS/CA Fics by midnightdragons ❧ general audience/teen and up, 36.0k (in progress) ❧ james "bucky" barnes/sam wilson ❧ this is an ongoing series of disconnected one-shots by midnightdragons. you may thinking, why not just recommend one or two fics by them, instead of all of their sambucky fics? truth is, i CAN'T. i can't just stick to one. all of their sambucky fics are phenomenal and i've loved every single one of them. they are all relatively short, so you can certainly go through them all. they are just MMMMMMMM. most of them tackle sam and bucky's respective traumas in one form or another. typically it's bucky's, but that is to be expected: the draw of the winter soldier's endless pit of nauseating, suffocating trauma is literally impossible to resist. but they do an incredibly good job of it; each one is a breath of fresh air from the next; each one addressing another segment that was usually overlooked by the movies and/or TFATWS. if i had to pick a favorite one, i'd probably say Daybreak, because it takes something so simple yet so vital to the relation of trauma: the prosthetic. it has always, always meant fighting. he has only fought with it - only went from one fight to the next for years on end. he only received an arm from the wakandans to fight against thanos. and now? now what is he supposed to do? these kids aren't scared of the arm, they think it's cool. which is so unfathomable to bucky, who simply cannot associate it as such. i think that's a good approach to bucky's character. and then there's the rest of the dynamic, the relationship between the two. it always alternates between sincere and cheeky, like always. and like always, they find room to love each other in between (romantic or platonic, it's up to interpretation. i kind of like the nebulous dynamic). ❧ “If you really wanna act like I’m on my deathbed, you can just sit there and be quiet,” he said at last, voice dry and light. Bucky’s mouth twitched a little, which was a positive. “Your pacing is loud as hell. It’s almost like you’re worried about me, or something,” Sam teased him.
✎ down bad (bone deep) by glittercake ❧ explicit, 16.8k ❧ james "bucky" barnes/sam wilson ❧ during a new-avengers fight with the red hulk, sam completely shatters more than a few bones in his body and has to spend a long time in complete rehabilitation, starting from bed-bound, to wheelchair, to eventual full recovery. if it wasn't obvious by the first fic i recommended in this month's list, i love caretaker! bucky. i think it's neat. and this fic does it WELL. because while the other fic was in sam's point of view, this one is in bucky's. it's a whole different slew of emotions that come along (as well as the fact the original nature of their relationship is different, but i digress). aside from all of the delicious physical caretaking (of which i take GREAT pleasure in. i love it when character A has to fully, manually take care of character B, including washing B, moving B, feeding B, etc), the gradual process of bucky and sam falling in love over the rehabilitation period is something that i'm not sure i can put into words. it happens all so naturally, like how i would imagine two real life people would fall in love with each other. these two do it like they are real. and that is a master of an art, to bring out the reality in the fiction. the banter is, also, once again, absolutely amazing. it really isn't sambucky if there isn't a healthy amount of banter that makes you laugh. ❧ The rustling paper bag has Sam opening his eyes again. A quick, surprised expression passes over his face like he didn’t expect Bucky to be there. He blinks. “Buck,” he says with the faintest smile before he closes his eyes. “I missed beers.”
✎ this whole song and dance by Lunar_Pull ❧ general audiences, 3.7k ❧ michelle jones/peter parker, james "bucky" barnes/sam wilson ❧ peter comes by the diner mj works at every day, because he still loves her, and it's so hard to be away from her, even though it hurts him to see her serve him every day without a hint of recognition of their past relationship. one day, when he's there as per usual, sam and bucky walk in, talking loudly and acting as if most of the population doesn't know who they are. they then both talk to peter; in rounds, of course, and unintentionally doing so when their other half has walked away. peter has a lot of conflicting emotions in this fic. mostly, it's about peter having lost his entire life and being unable to give up the girl of his dreams. but it's also about how bucky and sam both individually relate to peter's situation and give him advice on what to do going forward. even though neither of them show a hint of remembering him, their words strike a deep cord within peter. because it's not just about the question of whether or not the love is real or if the other person will reciprocate; it's about being the best person you can be for your partner, and about waiting until you are both ready to indulge in something good. this entire fic is a wonderfully beautiful way to relate the complex emotions around love and loss. ❧ Barnes takes a deep, long breath. He shifts in his chair to lean over into Peter’s space. He’s frowning, his entire face is deadly serious, and Peter only briefly wonders if he’s accidentally triggered the Soldier somehow before Barnes responds. His voice is full of conviction when he says, “Then you work your ass off to become the best man you can be. The kind of man she’s not better off without. And when you’ve done that, if you’re lucky enough that she’s not seeing anyone else, you ask her out.”
✎ No Ordinary Love by TheFlashFic ❧ teen and up, 11.6k ❧ james "bucky" barnes/sam wilson ❧ bucky develops hanahaki disease for sam - a classic. if anyone is going to develop hanahaki, across the span of time, space, fandoms, the multiverse, every show and every book and every film every created, bucky would be the one to do it. the intense yearning and longing he has for anyone he sets his eyes on is UNMATCHED. it would also be just his like, in my opinion, that he would finally have something good in his life, only for it to then be untimely ripped away from him. there is a lot that goes on in this fic, and it sort of tackles all of that. he loves sam, that much is undoubted. it's him learning how to cope that his love will be what strangles him. the worst part about it is that sam struggles to leave him along, so when bucky runs off to die alone like an animal would, sam tags along. and it's all just. it's all just exactly what a hanahaki fic should look like, with the addition of everything that comes with the trauma of having once been the winter soldier. ❧ “Someone in the far east however many decades ago saw the Winter Soldier, this mindless Hydra assassin, and said ‘yeah, someday he’s gonna fall in love, and we can’t have that.’”
✎ Constellation of Touch by st4rlabsforever ❧ explicit, 13.4k ❧ james "bucky" barnes/sam wilson ❧ platonic touching is very special to me. despite, the romance tag and the explicit warning, that's honestly what most of this is: learning how to lean into a touch instead of away from it. learning how to love the feeling of skin-on-skin contact, of a body encasing another, without the price or expectation looming over your head. there is a certain catharsis to seeking out touch when you feel it should be banished from you, which is why i particularly enjoyed it in the context of these two. one person, who feels that he will get hurt again if he chooses to express his desire for contact and true friendship. a second person, who fears his own reaction to touch, as though it may turn him into something uncontrollable, and who is actively learning how to go through the steps of expressing any emotion normally. outside of the angst and the parts where they learn that "falling" does not mean "dying", it's also really funny. this author writes dialogue and internal monologues so effortlessly. it's all very natural and all of the voices are extremely in character. a great fic for my platonic touch lovers (TRUST ME ON THIS. THEY DO GET NASTY AT THE END BUT IT IS A SMALL PRICE TO PAY). ❧ He smirks, directing his eyes skyward. In a roundabout way, being forced to acknowledge just how touch-starved they are isn’t so bad either. Neither is learning to lean on your partner from time-to-time.
✎ The Tucson Job by to_be_a_dreamer ❧ general audiences, 11.5k (in progress) ❧ joaquín torres & sam wilson, isaiah bradley & sam wilson ❧ joaquín goes mysteriously missing during an undercover mission that he didn't tell anyone about, and sam and isaiah team up to find him. there isn't much along in this fic yet in terms of the plot, it really has only just begun. but it is already SO promising and so good. the idea the author has is to mix joaquin's comic backstory with his MCU persona, which makes for the whole "missing" plotline. if you don't know what his comic backstory is and want to read this fic, i would say go in blind. it will be ten times more mysterious and intriguing, since you definitively do not know what will happen to joaquin. the story is also a little bit more than just a search-and-rescue. there is a lot of torres family drama, and a whole lot to do with the world of illegal immigration and helping those who cannot be helped by the law or by people who work under the law. it's an emotional piece for sure; the whole fic is about what happens when the government continuously does the wrong thing. i highly recommend this because it fleshes out joaquin's character in a very important and very interesting way. i also live for sam going against the government, because when is captain america not going against the government? ❧ Sam still looked worried, but Joaquín didn’t need him to think everything was okay, he just needed Sam to let him go without asking too many questions, “Okay. Okay, but if you need anything you call me, alright? I mean it, Joaquín, anything at all and I’ll be there, no questions asked.”
✎ diving blind by yukla ❧ teen and up, 10.7k ❧ james "bucky" barnes/sam wilson ❧ i am a firm believer in bucky acting like a traditional gentleman to sam in a relationship. not that they are in an official relationship until the end, but bucky's trying really hard and that's what counts. he was built to open doors and bring roses and pay for dinner, what more is there to say? buried in the fluff of sam and bucky's adventures as a half-couple is the angst. something that yukla is good at is balancing the tones of the story and making the fic deeper than it originally seems. treading just underneath sam willfully pretending that bucky isn't into him, is sam's trauma. he doesn't want to hurt again. he doesn't want to hurt anyone else again. he doesn't want to have something good, and then watch it plummet to the earth like a bird shot out of the sky. he's done that once already. i can also appreciate how bucky is written, with his capacity to wait, even if it comes at some level of pain. and then, the moment when it shatters like ice between them. that is something i love about yukla's works: that breaking point in the tension, where sam and bucky actually communicate. good soup. ❧ “There are more ways to be hurt,” says Sarah, “than just losing someone.”
✎ the crossed threshold by yukla ❧ teen and up, 3.4k ❧ james "bucky" barnes/sam wilson ❧ THE AUTHOR THAT YUKLA IS. i wish i could read 500 sambucky fics by them because they just get sambucky like no other has, in my opinion. but alas, they only have three fics, of which i am grateful that they have written any for sambucky at all. the thing i love the most. THE MOST. about their fics is their understanding of sam's character. nobody gets sam like yukla does, okay? it really comes out in this fic. the highlight of the story is this: nobody cared about whether or not sam wanted the shield in TFATWS. nobody cared what it would be like for him to carry the stars and stripes. they do address it, yes, in a manner of 6 episodes and a whole lot of flag-smashing in between. it's about a whole lot of things, carrying that shield. it's about a whole lot of things for sam in particular to carry it. in this fic, he reaches out to bucky in person before the events of TFATWS. he tries to talk to bucky; it doesn't go well. bucky terrorizes sam some. sam breaks. and then they do talk, eventually. because they hit that shatter point when all that's left to do it fit back together the pieces of the porcelain plate. in my mind, yukla and i are writing buddies /j ❧ “Listen to yourself. Listen to yourself talking about this damn metal disc. First it’s about Steve, then it’s about you, and then it’s about John fucking Walker, it’s all about power and legacies and the damn United States of America. There's no room in this conversation for me at all, not for people like me. Nobody asked me what I wanted, even once. Steve didn’t. The government didn’t. John Walker didn’t.”
✎ No more waiting by Barely_Vibing ❧ teen and up, 4.2k ❧ james "bucky" barnes/sam wilson ❧ in other words: bucky, who hails from the 1930s, is not exactly built for modern-day situationships. because what do you mean you're calling me friend when we both obviously want to suck each other's faces off? yeah, he's not dealing with that. so he sets off to stop these almost-dates by making them official. it's very cute and very in line with bucky, i think, because i don't think he could honestly handle a situationship on top of everything else has constantly has going on. bucky is the president of the "death to situationships" club. he's also cute and gentlemanly in this fic, which i believe in wholeheartedly (as we know). great little fic, very fluffy. ❧ Bucky stepped forward, handing Sam the flowers. He took them if not just put of pure confusion. "They're flowers. For you." Straight forward and to the point. No sense being subtle. "Back in my day, y'know, it was the gentlemanly thing to do for your date."
✎ Fluent in Mistakes, Relentless in Pursuit by Bolets_de_Montjuïc (elsur1953) ❧ teen and up, 2.2k ❧ james "bucky" barnes/sam wilson ❧ sam is learning spanish, and while he's good, he's certainly not perfect. learning another language is hard. his mistakes are hilarious. overall a very cute fic where sam has some misadventures when speaking the language, but all of his friends and joaquin's family help him along the way. mostly, though (aside from the funny bits), i appreciate the reasonings behind sam learning the language. his goal is to help people, and he can't expect all of these people to be able to speak English, especially since he's located in the united states. it's important for him, as an icon and as a savior, to speak the language of victims. i think that's pretty neat and very in-character for him. ❧ “You let me say ‘I’m pregnant’ in front of the Torreses, and multiple times?”
✎ The Waiting Game by BlueSpark96 ❧ teen and up, 6.0k ❧ joaquín torres & sam wilson ❧ this fic is really interesting. essentially, joaquin and sam take up a mission in antarctica to investigate a glowing cave they suspect is filled with a precious metal. the mission is odd, though. joaquin receives an odd text message on the plane ride over about starting "the waiting game". he ignores it, but then he sees the message again on a computer. he chooses not to think about it. other odd things happen, too. he keeps hearing people in his ear, saying words that they apparently aren't saying at all. then, the mission goes sideways. i can't say anything more because it will spoil the whole thing, so Iill be careful about what i say in terms of praise. it's a VERY entertaining and very interesting fic. i like the breaks in reality, joaquin's confusion, and the overall visuals of the fic. i like stories where reality is not what it seems, that the characters are in far more danger than is being portrayed, and this is exactly that. ❧ “I know,” Joaquín murmured. “Did you know you go to Antarctica when you die?”
✎ Five Times Joaquín Torres Isn't an Undercover Flag Smasher and One Time [REDACTED] by silver_penny ❧ teen and up, 5.1k ❧ joaquín torres & sam wilson, james "bucky" barnes & joaquín torres, joaquín torres & karli morgenthau ❧ this was a hard read for me. it still kind of makes my stomach gurgle when i think about it, which is kind of crazy considering that nothing much actually happens in the fic. it essentially tackles what i really didn't like about TFATWS, which was the fact that it kept trying to get me to sympathize with a t^rrorist group. or, at the very least, it kept trying to get me to sympathize with karli. and i'm sorry, but i couldn't. i couldn't get behind the flag smashers in any capacity, and because karli was part of it (without ever reforming), i couldn't get behind her, either. so, where does this leave this fic? well, it's set over the course of TFAWTS, except joaquín is an actual member of the flag smashers, and not just an undercover spy. it's a lot. it's a lot for me emotionally because i really, really like joaquín. the fic is written masterfully, to the point where it's genuinely believable and applicable to canon - almost like that is what happened, if it wasn't certain that joaquín's characterization didn't allow room for radical idealogy. and for the first time, i sympathized with a flag smasher - until i didn't. because i still can't sympathize, still can't get behind it in any capacity after all this time. it really sucks. this fic is so masterfully written and gut-wrenching in all of the right ways, and any fic that can twist and scramble my mind and stomach in such a way is well worth the recommendation and read. ❧ He leans back against the wall and flips the little scrap of paper over and over in his fingers. He has a choice, here; the last five years have taught him that you always, always have a choice, even if it is hard and vanishingly small.
✎ love, zombies, and barry white by zevlore ❧ mature, 8.3k ❧ james "bucky" barnes/sam wilson ❧ a series of two fics set in the zombie apocalypse (no powers au), technically set in their own canon but following the same universe/storyline. it's also written entirely in dialogue, with the idea that we are reading transcripts of the conversations that have recorded over the several months that they are traveling around the united states during this apocalypse. it is SO good and so entertaining. the best part of any story, in my opinion, is the dialogue (should it have any - some are formatted differently). in this case, it is ONLY dialogue. it's impressive to be able to capture a character only by the way they speak, and this author does it perfectly. even in an apocalyptic universe, they find a way to be domestic and love each other and be happy, no matter what's burning around them. they've been through so much and yet the reach for each other's hands in every clip. and then when they fight - they make up, because there is no time to be angry in the end of the world. the first fic has a happy ending; the second... not so much. both of them are spectacular though in their own ways, and if you want amputee bucky, you'll have to read the sad one. but it's worth it, in my opinion. both are amazing. ❧ We found a radio to fill the silence a little. Whoever’s out there just playing Barry White, Marvin Gaye, and Tavares on channel seven, know that my husband loves you.
✎ so stay away (or maybe, baby, maybe you should stay) by zevlore ❧ teen and up, 7.0k ❧ james "bucky" barnes/sam wilson ❧ i'm always an absolute sucker for a mermaid au. set in the 1880s, sam is a fisherman in delacroix, and bucky is a bayou half-man half-fish creature of some sort. when sam is finally able to coax him out, they become something like friends. it's all very sweet, as sam and bucky slowly fall in love with each other. even with a massive communication barrier (which is revealed to be a curse that a warlock had put onto him to not be able to speak more than a couple syllables at a time, all broken and choppy), they find a way to talk and share their lives. it's just. it's so beautiful. they love each other so much. the author's writing is also very pleasant and enjoyable; i recommend reading more of their works if you like one. there's a lot to find in their library, and all of it is delicious. ❧ Bucky shakes his head, looking grim. “Break. No. Love me. Can’t. Love me. Ree-pull-seeve.”
✎ Part of it, Parted by it by outsidertalk ❧ general audiences, 6.8k ❧ james "bucky" barnes/sam wilson ❧ sam has died, shot fatally during a public speech by a man seeking revenge, and bucky grieves. that's it. that's the whole fic. it transitions between certain points where he's reminiscing on the things that he has lost. that the only way he can now measure love is by what he does not have. it's a lot. there is a lot of introspection on his inter-relationships, on his and sam's lives, on their love, and of the future that they'll never get to have. mostly, though, he thinks of all that sam has given, and all that has been taken from him by the people he swore to protect. i think it accurately tackles what it's like to lose a loved in a way you could have never predicted, never prevented, and having nowhere to go with that idle rage and desperation to turn back the clock. you can only sit there and think. it's miserable. this fic is absolutely heartwrenching. and the ending line? the ending line destroyed me. despite the relatively short length of the fic, it feels like it stretches on, and on, and on, that months have passed in this hazy state. but then you find out how long has actually passed. great work. ❧ Tragedy was useless. Self-defense only invited more accusations. The greatest pleasure in the world was listening to tragedies that did not befall oneself—especially if those tragedies were soaked in suffering and spectacle.
✎ Got You Now, Kid by Forge_Makes_Stuff ❧ general audiences, 6.3k ❧ james "bucky" barnes & peter parker, peter parker & sam wilson, james "bucky" barnes & sam wilson ❧ my guilty pleasure are fics where sambucky are the only ones to remember peter parker in some capacity. and i'm not talking that they retain all of their memories of him or that they had some specific epiphany where things are rushing back, but they have some small thing. a deep, unsettling feeling that something is wrong. there's a scratch in the record when they look at spider-man and hear his voice, that there is, quite simply, something missing in their brain. it's a guilty pleasure for the reason of it being that there is no reason they would remember him. bucky has a slightly stronger case than sam (being that he's familiar with the tampering memories in his brain, and the separation of bucky vs the winter soldier), but sam... not so much. but i don't care. them recognizing peter and filtering through these blips of wrong in their brain is EVERYTHING to me. and them putting past their humiliation in Germany to help out someone in need? i love it. i also love the idea that, since they don't fully recognize peter, bucky has to wonder if this missing memory is one of the winter soldier's, which then leads to the problem if this is a victim. it would dramatically change how they approaches the whole idea in a way that greatly pleases me. it indulges me greatly in my guilty pleasures for sambucky + peter and for that i am grateful. ❧ Sam’s used to looking for Bucky’s little tells, the things he does when he’s hurting and won’t tell anyone. Right now, there’s a slight tremor in his right hand, and something in his face that says he wants to bolt. “Kid, I need you to be honest,” Bucky says, just as quietly. “Did I—did the Winter Soldier—”

✎ Gojo Shows You His Gojo: Gojo x Reader by 1s4angelonia ❧ teen and up, 2.8 ❧ gojo satoru/reader, loki/reader ❧ the reason that this is an honorable mention is because, while it is technically a marvel fic, i would say this is moreso for jujutsu kaisen than it is for mcu. also this is a crack fic. but it is a MASTERFUL one. of all of the crack fics i've read, this is one of the best. there is a true art (and i believe this with full sincerity) to the crack genre and this author has it down pat. everything from the tags to the actual contents of the story. the verbiage, the prose, the characters, the backstories. it's amazing. i could only wish to produce a crackfic as masterful as this one. i don't want to get into the plot because i believe any crack fic is best experienced completely blind. i laughed at almost every single line. absolutely amazing work is done here, really the vessel of god's intent. i love crack fics. everyone should be a crack fic enthusiast. ❧ It’s Loki, from the famous Disney plus series Loki! (or from Marvel Comics, before y'all get your panties in a twist).

I love this truth or dare ask game, but having learned my lesson, I will ask the authors I like directly. :)
Tag whomever you like or are curious about.
I am curious so here are my questions. My "dare" in case you dislike answering will be a story for one of my favourite pairings. ;)
🍓 ⇢ how did you get into writing fanfiction? 🥑 ⇢ you accidentally killed somebody, which mutual(s) do you text for help? 🐇 ⇢ do you prefer writing original characters, reader inserts, or a mix of both? 🍄 ⇢ share a head canon for one of your favourite ships or pairings 🍬 ⇢ post an unpopular opinion about a popular fandom character 🔪 ⇢ what's the weirdest topic you researched for a writing project? ❄️ ⇢ what's your dream theme/plot for a fic, and who would write it best? 🍦 ⇢ name three good things about a character you hate 🪲 ⇢ add 50 words to your current wip and share the paragraph here ☁️ ⇢ what made you choose your username? 🎨 ⇢ link your favourite piece of fanart and explain why you like it 🧩 ⇢ what will make you click away from a fanfiction immediately?
Writing your favorite pairings? Don't get greedy girl, I basically just gave you romantic garden sex! (Also you KNOW I will answer anything because I love that and I love procrastinating) 😂
🍓 ⇢ how did you get into writing fanfiction?
Just like that. I don't remember how I got into it back in the 90s, but in 2020, I got into it because I liked some Emralt stories so much, I thought, "Hey, maybe I can do that, too."
🥑 ⇢ you accidentally killed somebody, which mutual(s) do you text for help?
Probably @deagle. She'll know what to do because she's seen it in a movie with Sabin Tambrea 😂
🐇 ⇢ do you prefer writing original characters, reader inserts, or a mix of both?
Weeeeeell. Might be one of my OCs is a tiny bit like myself. But in general, I don't do reader inserts a lot.
🍄 ⇢ share a head canon for one of your favourite ships or pairings
I'm convinced Buck didn't tell Tommy about the sperm donor thingy yet, and it will become a major issue between them for whatever reason.
🍬 ⇢ post an unpopular opinion about a popular fandom character
I still think his bachelor party behavior was absolutely out of character for Eddie. I know the fandom theories, but I disagree.
🔪 ⇢ what's the weirdest topic you researched for a writing project?
Maybe the kind of injuries you get from either falling of a certain height and from being shot with a .45
❄️ ⇢ what's your dream theme/plot for a fic, and who would write it best?
I will fail you... still obsessed with the song, so I'd love to see the topic of the seemingly infallible fail to rescue their loved one. Not necessarily resulting in MCD, though. Don't care which pairing, don't care who'd write it. It's juicy.
🍦 ⇢ name three good things about a character you hate
Listen, I don't hate characters. That's stupid, they're not real. I admire writers of any kind if they make me feel things about a character, even if it's repulsion. But wait, we have Gerrard in the coming season. Nobody likes Gerrard... are there 3 good things about him? Let's see. He's old, so he might just die soon. He screams at Buck, that might get him in trouble. He's jealous, so he might make a mistake. I think those are good things 😂
🪲 ⇢ add 50 words to your current wip and share the paragraph here
Yes, ma'am! Not edited.
“Who killed my father, Pablo? Was that you?”
Carlos pushed himself away from the car’s wreckage and fixed Pablo with his gaze.
"Me? Oh boy, I don't cross the border so easily these days, you know? And certainly not to get some old guy out of the way. I've got my men for that.“
☁️ ⇢ what made you choose your username?
I love Dick. Philip K. Dick, that is 😂
🎨 ⇢ link your favourite piece of fanart and explain why you like it
There are so many, you know I love all the fanart I ever commissioned or got as a present. But today, I'd like to say this piece by @johix (sorry, if you don't want me to put it directly in a post please tell me!) I just love it.
Tumblr media
🧩 ⇢ what will make you click away from a fanfiction immediately?
Usually, two breaks after a paragraph throughout the whole fic. Or when the fic turns out differently than expected, because I often don't read tags and I rarely read things like MPREG and stuff.
THANK YOU! This was fun. I'll throw the same questions right back at you.

Hi! I absolutely adored your Soulmate Trope series and it inspired me to get into writing fanfics.
The thing is I've been struggling with whether my stories (working on multiple ideas rn) would fall under x reader or OC. They are supposed to be x reader (unspecified name/physical description, and a vague backstory if any) but i've seen some people say that x readers should be as generic as possible, even when it comes to personality.
So since you're one of my favorite fanfic authors, I wanted to reach out and ask you: Where do you draw the line between a reader insert and an OC, especially when it comes to portraying their personality?
Thank you!
disclaimer: there's no set way to do this, but this is what i do for readerfics, having been writing them since 2013.
writing advice incoming.
Specificity about the body is your enemy, especially numerical measurements. They are immediately deniable and can break immersion. "You were a 5'3", petite, blonde woman with small breasts--" No, I'm not. I'm not 5'3". I'm not blonde or petite. Height, weight, body type, hair colour, eye colour--everyone's different. You immediately alienate part of your audience by specifying these things, and even vaguer phrases like having "a great ass" can still be off-putting, bc what if your audience doesn't consider their ass great. The main thing is you don't need to mention physical traits at all. They don't contribute to the plot, generally. So, leave out stuff like "his green eyes looked into your e/c ones" because the colour makes no difference whatsoever. The only real reason to specify about the physicality of the reader is if it's a plot point, such as the whole fic being a comfort story about the burdens of having big boobs or the stigma of having a wing quirk--OR if there is something particularly non-normative about a canon character's body that you're comparing the reader to, and even then you don't want specifics. Here I'm thinking about Levi Ackerman (snk) and how short he is. He's 5'3". Me, personally, I'm 5'9", but to avoid alienating people, I'd say something a bit vauge like "your height difference kept you from looking Levi directly in the eye, but you managed to shoot a glare in his general direction." Like, through that, we get that reader and Levi aren't the same height, but we don't even say who's taller, keeping both taller and shorter readers along for the ride.
2. If you do decide to specify a physical trait for a reader that doesn't necessarily contribute to plot, you want to tag it. I wouldn't worry about fewer people reading your fic bc it "doesn't apply to them," bc for me, there's a sense of shock/breaking immersion if suddenly I am a tiny, tiny blonde woman. But if you tagged short!blonde!reader, then I'm prepared for that. In general, you always want to tag gender.
3. I personally don't use "Y/N" in fics. I come from back in the days when authors would just put __________ in fics for you to imagine your name, and I can't divorce that odd blank from the placeholder. I do, of course, use that interactivefics plugin, and if I really want a character to say our name, then I just say in narration that he does, not in dialogue. This is because seeing the "Y/N" breaks immersion. Reminds us we're in a fic, and that lots of people are reading this, not just you. Makes it feel a bit less special.
4. Reader personality. Listen. Lots of people have lots of opinions on this. Think about what's relevant to your story, the plot, the relationship with other characters. That's the stuff you want to include. If a piece of info doesn't affect any of that, cut it. For instance, in my Soulmate Trope series, reader always has a quirk, but I never specifiy what it is--because it doesn't matter for the plot. I mention that she's good at stealth, because that gets us working with Aizawa, or getting Shigaraki to practise tailing us. And by not specifying what type of stealth work, the audience is left to imagine what parts of stealth they'd be good at, and insert it. And really, when people say they want a generic reader--they're doing the reader character a disservice, because she still has many personality traits--kind, shy, easily flustered, secretive, stubborn, easy to love, keen to fall in love. These are still distinct personality traits, but since this combination of traits tends to be a bit passive, it can feel dull. But even if it feels dull, reader is still the character driving the plot. Like, think about the reader in my Hawks fic, "and i've gotta crow." She's manipulative, violent, impulsive, closed off to love but continually surprised by it, eager to hold grudges, and continually seeing life as a game. Because that's the sort of person who would fake amnesia, going so far as to marry her hot bully as revenge. Reader personality drives the plot: for your reader characters, consider what types of person would get into these situations, what personality traits would help in this situation, and what traits would make everything worse. In Torodoki's route, reader needed to be a bit situationally unaware and bullheaded; Aizawa's route's reader needed to be a professional Yearner; Shinsou's route's reader needed to be an anxious virgin who overthinks everything; Shigaraki's reader needed to be someone chewed up and spit back out just like him--otherwise, these readers wouldn't get into the situations the plot calls for. Personally, if I read a fic with a reader with a personality trait I would never exhibit, but the trait drives the plot, then, of course, I can pretend for the sake of the story. It's fun to imagine yourself being a bit more daring, perhaps, or smoother with flirtation, or more self-destructive. We can always pretend for personality, because it's like acting or roleplaying.
5. This one is super specific to me: specifying clothes/makeup bothers me, mostly because people like to put reader characters in gold, and I am cool-toned and would therefore never wear gold. Or saying something like "silk that clings to your body" what if I hate my body and don't wanna show it off? What then? I tend to not specify what particular shades of a colour that reader is wearing, because then the audience can imagine light or dark, whatever looks better on them, and as for shape/material, if the clothing is not plot relevant (as in, there's not going to be a clothing mishap), then I say something vague like "long and made out of a flowy material that reminded you of a jellyfish." Lets the audience imagine what that looks like for them, since everyone has a difference idea and would know what looks good on them. One time in Soulmate Trope I mention a specific article of clothing is in Aizawa's route, when reader is dressing up to go out with friends but shifts to Aizawa's shower. She's wearing a mostly backless tank top, and the reason we get a description of the cut is because it's plot-relevant: Aizawa places his hand on her bare back, marking her with the pink handprint.
6. If your reader character has a name, then it is not a reader character. It is an OC. It is, of course, acceptable to make the reader character have an in-universe nickname with good reason, such as my reader character in "Viper," who goes by...Viper, to protect her real identity from other mafia members. But if a character has a name name, that's an OC. If you write an OC, do not tag it as readerfic. For me, personally, an easy way to get around this in BNHA fics is to call reader by her hero name--but, of course, those are usually tied to quirks, which, again, may alienate some readers if they don't think they'd have that quirk. You have to decide which you're more willing to have.
7. In the decade+ I've been writing/reading readerfic, these are the things that make me think a character is an OC over a reader character: a name, a specific family dynamic (such as having a single mother and two brothers, especially if those family members are plot-relevant), specific physical traits that do not contribute to the plot, or being born in a long line of special people (think magic users, or something, like a chosen one situation). All of these things have one, main throughline: they're things that a person can't change about themselves, pretty much ever. All of them point to being a bit too different from your audience, and there's nothing they could do to change it. Your audience could learn to dance better, or get shyer, or have the courage to ask that guy out, because those are potential paths of growth in real life. Because they're things that your audience could realistically change about themselves IRL, it's much easier to imagine being that in a fic. It's harder to imagine only living with your mother if you live with both your mom and your dad. It's hard to make up a brother to have in a fic if you don't have one IRL. (though i personally work around some of this by imagining jeff goldblum and emma thompson as my parents in fic, bc my irl parents would NEVER be, like. incredibly cool or super abusive or whatever.)
8. But again! If you don't like any of this advice, ignore it! This comes down to personal preference, and I'm picky! These things are, at the end of the day, just things I personally like. Ultimately, fic is fun. It's not supposed to be a chore. If you think it's easier to go against any of the above, go ahead. It's your art.
i love you v v v much. we are holding hands. i'm immensely flattered that you'd reach out to ask for writing advice; wow. will you tag me in your finished fic??? no pressure, of course!! but i love reading new stories and spreading them around!!! very best of luck to you!!! xx.

Alright so as far as introductions go, I guess I should probably make one before I get too far into this.
HERES MY ABOUT ME POST!
My name's Leonardo, and you can call me any version of that that you want (Leo, Leon, Leonard, Nardo[my favorite], either way, it's all the same to me.) My pronouns are He/Him. I am an artist, author, animator, and a DEDICATED CLAWCODE ENTHUSIST (Hence the name)
I am also VERY autistic and don't get tone a lot, so tone tags are very important to me, especially when there's joking or sarcasm involved.
Ahem.
I know the Spiderverse Fandom isn't particularly alive (SCREAMING CRYING THROWING UP) but I will try to post often, even if it's just a shitpost here and there. I really want to help feed into the ClawCode brain rot since the content for these two is SEVERELY FUCKING LACKING. So. If you have requests for things, I will probably end up doing them! My asks are always open, and I'd love to hear from anybody. I don't have any friends that love them the way that I do 😔😔
I have not had Tumblr before! Which is a little insane, so I'm new to all of this and learning how everything works. Please forgive me if I don't know the proper etiquette on this app lmao. My friend has been guiding me through all of this and told me to make an About Me post, so that's what I'm doing.
Here are some tags that will frequent my posts!
Yapping Hour - Will either be used for headcanons, or short stories/ideas/other ClawCode related crap. It's just going to be a general tag that will probably go on most of my posts from here on out.
Slur Gallery - Will be of the art I post of them, be it ship art or other :3 because everybody deserves a gallery of slurs to look at. AND JUST LOOK AT THEM!
Earworm - Is the tag I'll use when there's music involved, like songs that remind me of them (and the heavy analysis that goes with it **COMING SOON**), or animatics that I'm working on, or just anything that has to do with a song. Edits, artworks, the whole shebang.
Talkaholic - This will ALSO be used for mini stories/facfics, but more often than the yapping hour. So if you wanna read my writing of them that's what you can find it under.
Offline - will be under posts like these, where it isn't directly related to anything, just random blocks of text or other art that I feel like posting.
Oil And Water - THIS tag will be about the fanfic I am currently (excruciatingly slowly) writing! It doesn't have a happy ending and is meant to be a HEAVY angst story, like hurt/no comfort or very little comfort. I have one chapter out currently but will be working on more soon (and will make a separate post about it! But I will link it here as well. MOTIVATE ME TO WRITE IT /HJ)
Prowler Party - Is what I'll put on ALL of my posts as an extra way to help find me if one so desires d=(^o^)=b
OOC - On the chance that I might make something intentionally out of character, I will put this beneath it. I know a lot of people don't like mischaracterization, or incorrect portrayal of a character, but sometimes it's really fun to write, so I will be including that was well.
I think that's all that I can think of right now (I'm running off of an hour and 40 minutes sleep), but things may change or be edited in the future. But for now, I'll be signing off.
Shipwrecked - THIS WILL BE ABOUT MY SELKIE/SIREN AU BECAUSE IM ACTUALLY NOT OKAY ABOUT IT AND NEED TO SHARE MY INSANITY
HELLO AND THANK YOU TO THE WARM WELCOME I'VE RECIEVED!!
MORE COMIGN SOON

this is a little out of nowhere but do you know if there are any primers for running a fic exchange? I saw you mentioned bring back a caps exchange like a month ago (which would be so cool). it kind of inspired me with another fandom, but I can't find any good guides and was hoping you might have some recs.
(Sorry for the long delay in reply. Clearly when I say I will get to something in a day or so, I-- uh, will not. Life's been a lot. Very sorry!)
With the proviso that @weaglerock did most of the actual hard work of the ALLCAPS Exchange and my role was mainly to make shitty promo manips (actually I still like this one) and nag people to turn stuff in and occasionally pinch hit--
Honestly, AO3 actually has some of the best resources for you, if you're planning to be like most exchanges and run your exchange through/post there. They've put together FAQs and tutorials and I think they're pretty straightforward and easy to understand.
Tutorial: Running a Gift Exchange on AO3
Archive FAQ: Gift Exchange
Challenges tutorial: creating and running a gift exchange
Signing up for a gift exchange
Reddit is also handy, and I've found a number of their posts with good advice: here, here (more from the user POV rather than the runner POV but good to think about, and this post were ones I referred to.
General advice:
I find if you have a random question and you can't figure out how to make shit work with AO3 or something, Fail Fandom Anon is a decent way to ask for help. Every post has a thread related to various Bangs/Exchanges going on, and you can post an anonymous request or question. Quality and quantity of response can vary based on when you post it (if the post is almost at comment limit and about to move to the next, you might not get much; just try again with a newly opened post), but usually someone will respond.
Most of the exchanges I've helped with were done before discord got huge, so I haven't utilized it as an organizer as much, but I've been in exchanges as an author where it originated from a fandom discord, and it did streamline communication to have a dedicated channel/discord for the participants. But mostly we used tumblr, gmail, and a googledoc for notifications and tracking.
Always assume some people are simply going to dip, for legitimate or other reasons. Shit will happen. It's super frustrating to delay opening an exchange because you're scrambling to make sure everyone gets something and that it's of decent quality so I'd advise definitely lining up multiple pinch hitters (and assume some of THEM will also bolt randomly) in advance, or be ready to do it yourself, or build in an extra time period of complete works being due before going live, or optimally, all of those things. Having more than one organizer/moderator is helpful!
Highly encourage people to include detailed author letters to accompany their requests. Have regular timeline check ins and reminders. Also, it's easiest to assume everyone's a newbie and err on the side of over-explaining. Have templates and formatted examples on hand for transparency; this includes examples of how you want people to make their requests and examples of an author letter.
Anyway, honestly my best piece of advice is to find a moderator who's already done this before and is good at all of it and will do most of it, and then just act like you've always been there and tag along for the glory. It worked marvelously for me. (But no, really, in the end I think the best bet for success is go back to an exchange from any fandom you enjoyed and felt was well run, look at their set-up/timelines/rules/verbiage, and then model after that accordingly. Obviously don't copy everything directly, or if you do, credit the those organizers.)
And, like, have fun.

I've seen many posts about people missing how common asks used to be so I have been trying to send about an ask a week. Now I send this ask first anytime I follow someone as I really don't want to bother anyone, so I'd love to know if you enjoy receiving asks and if so what kind of asks. Not having energy for asks or being comfortable with them is perfectly okay.
The categories I have in my ask notebook that I file under are in colour. Please feel free to make your response as long as you want or private (the asker cannot directly respond to private responses).
Self, Job/Work: please let me know what you are comfortable with from eh idk just ask it to nothing personal at all.
Baggishield/Tolkien, Dragon Age, Johnlock/Sherlock, ineffable spouses, other fandom: Please let me know what fandoms. I think my main fandoms and ships are Bagginshield/The Hobbit, Sherlock/Johnlock, Dragon Age Inquisition, {Pippin/Faramir Merry/Eowyn}/The Lord of the Rings and I dip my toes in a few that I currently can't remember but ships I don't engage with the canon of at all are: Good Omens but only for Crowley/Azirapheal, Stranger Things but only for Steve/Eddie , The Witcher but only for Geralt/Jaskier, and Ladybug and Cat Noir but only for Adrinette .
OC's, art/drawing, their writing, blog specific only
Story snippets ideas and prompts: Do you like receiving them?
Pets: I'd love to know all about them
Garden and Hobbies: What type of gardening and/or hobbies?
Like being tagged in things: If so what kinds of things?
*Asks are sent for fun, no pressure to answer.
hello!!! yeah, i love receiving asks, lmao, & as for ur questions:
self, job/work: hmmm. im not rly comfy w any major questions ab my irl life (like stuff along the lines of “where specifically t do you live” (like im a brit, but if somewhere were to ask js where i live in the uk, i wldnt answer, as is common sense (imo) when it comes to the internet), “how old are you” “what is (are) your irl name(s)” etc. etc. - identifying stuff, basically), tho anythin’ else is pretty much on the table rn.
fandoms: oh, fandoms my beloved. my main fandoms atm (for both reading & writing, tho some r only reading while some r only writing, etc. etc.) are cuphead (i have way too much worldbuilding for this one au of mine that branches off into so many aus of the au, its genuinely gettin a lil crazy /pos /lh; i write fic for this one, aswell- in fact, its kinda my main writing-for fandom atm ^^), the hobbit (bagginshield my beloved i love you shjshsjehejs - i also dable vaguely in lotr (mainly gimli/legolas + parentshield tbh lmao) but its mostly js the hobbit for me), good omens (i love the ineffables i love s1 & s2 & HSJSHSJSHSJ i js love it like. all around. fuck gaimon tho, death of the author tyvmm), my hero academia/boku no hero academia (i dont engage w fandom much other then a few fanfic writers’ blogs here on tumblr & ao3 fanfic lmao XD; love the anime tho), harry potter (FUCK jkr, speaking as a brit myself none of us claim her, the transphobes can have her, we dont want her /lh - love the (good parts of) fanbase tho. ive actually made some rly good fic-writer friends thru it over on discord lmao), & ofc rise of the guardians!!! (fuckin love that thing, so sad there was never a second move :sadblob: love playin around w fanon/fandom lore tho, & i LOVE jackrabbit (bunnymund/jack) its my main ship in the fandom, tho im a multishipper so im also kinda partial to some other ones ofc)
ocs, art/drawing, writing, blog specific: not entirely sure what this one’s asking/if its actually a question, but imma answer it any lolol XD. anygays - ocs: i have a few cuphead ocs, but none of ‘em r self-inserts & all only rly exist bc of/for/to enhance/move forward the plot of my (main) cuphead au, tho ofc theyre still ocs - love ‘em like my children even if i dont love ‘em as much as i do the canon characters, snirk. art/drawing: i do draw, tho i rarely post any of my art, and one or two times i have its usually bc im js proud enough of it to want to share it, ehehe. writing: i write. so much fanfic. none of its posted, but i have so many wips i frankly dont know when any one of ‘em will be, sooo… shrug. blog specific: my blog isnt rly “specific”; its more js a place for me to enage w cool art & fics & such & reblog stuff i like on here as well as probably self-promo my own fics & such, as well as js a place to put my random ramblings in XD.
story snippets & prompts: oh, i love ‘em!! always nice 2 get a new burst of writing motivation ::D
pets: ohhh, cats. i love cats. had one for a while for around a good two years or so but after he injured his paw & we had 2 keep him inside for 3 weeks straight, the flightly lil bugger’s runaway. he (might’ve; still don’t know for sure whether it rly was him or not, but he apparently responded to his name from my mother’s accounts, so ) came back in the middle of the night a week or so ago now, but idtk whether he’s dead, alive, or js been taken in by some other family who thinks he’s a stray. :sigh:
gardening & hobbies: i don’t garden, and as for hobbies… not much, rly. i like writing fic, i like reading, i like going on (short, i have shite stamina) walks every other day or so, i like talkin w my few friends. like i said, not much. ::)
like being tagged in things: yes, i do! and as for what… anything, rly! tag games, fic wip games, askbox/ask games, im good w ‘em all! ::D
thx for the ask; have a good day/night/timezone!! ::>

WIP Questionnaire ±2
I was tagged by @rjcopeseethemald! I haven't done one of these in a while and really enjoyed the questions here, so I decided I'd give it a go for my wip: Wings of Faith!
Original from @illarian-rambling.
If you want to know more about Wings of Faith, check out my post here!
RULES: 1. Answer as few or as many of the following questions as you’d like! 2. In passing the tag along to others, you can add one question of your own, or replace an existing question.
This art is a bit old but it's the last time I've drawn everyone all together haha
Tumblr media
1. What was the first part of your wip that you created?
Surprisingly enough, Emmie (a main character, but not the protagonist) is the first part of my wip that I created (See the red girl on the top left). She was the protagonist of the very first book I wrote in fifth grade, and I wanted to pay homage to that work by including her. However, she's changed a LOT since then (even her name!), and the only remaining carry-over is the red streak in her hair.
2. If your story was a TV show, what would the theme song/intro be?
Intro song: "Run to the Devil" by Dragonwyck or "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" by Blue Oyster Cult. Outro song: "It Will Come Back" or "Francesca" by Hozier Instrumental: "Dragonlord Placidusax" from the Elden Ring Soundtrack or "Danse Macabre" by The Oh Hellos
3. Who are your favorite characters you’ve made? Why?
Andrew, my protagonist, is by far my favorite character. Writing from the POV of an incredibly sensitive, incredibly traumatized person (who feels things very deeply), while outwardly projecting a cruel and defensive facade is... *chef's kiss* Otherwise, I'd have to say Emmie. She is a very layered and multifaceted character with an incredibly important role to play in the story, and her kindness is refreshing amid a mostly hardened cast of characters.
4. What other pieces of media do you think would share a fan base for your story?
Six of Crows fans
Dante's Inferno fans who don't mind me bending the lore a bit
Fellow ex-Catholics
Fans of Hozier's "Unreal Unearth" album
Supernatural fans into the "corrupted angel x man struggling for redemption" dynamic
5. What has been your biggest struggle with your wip?
Keeping the facts straight. This has been a 10+ year project and sometimes I forget the revisions I've made, and accidentally cut out important details...
6. Are there any animals in your story? Talk about them!
Yes! Rimfaxe is a wraith, aka a shapeshifting shadow monster that takes the form of the things he's killed and eaten. (See the top left of the art above!) Emmie stole him from the government and now he's basically her kid.
7. How do your characters get around? (ex: trains, horses, cars, dragons, etc.)
They mostly walk (or fly on Rimfaxe)! Because Hell has a ceiling, the authorities restrict car transport to government officials ONLY to keep down emissions.
8. What part of your wip are you working on rn?
A giant, chapter-long fight scene that I've been working on for a literal year. It's TORTURE. Can't explain much else because of spoilers haha.
9. What aspects (tropes, maybe?) of your wip do you think will draw people in?
The main romance is an mlm enemies-to-friends-to-lovers angel x demon pairing! (Angel x demon pairings where they're both assholes>>>>>) Also I feel like there's been a void in lore-focused media dealing with angels and demons, and I'm hoping Wings of Faith will fill that void!
10. What are your hopes for your wip?
That I get it done after 10+ years... and that people will like it :')
11. (Added by rjcopeseethemald) What pieces of media have been the most inspiring to you for this wip?
Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo
The Inferno by Dante Alighieri
Hozier's "Unreal Unearth" album
Adding a Question 12: Is there a part of your wip you wish that you could change, but it's too late to go back now?
I don't want to bother anyone by tagging them directly, so I tag anyone who sees this post and wants to do it! Blanks below.
What was the first part of your wip that you created?
If your story was a TV show, what would the theme song/intro be?
Who are your favourite characters you’ve made? Why?
What other pieces of media do you think would share a fan base for your story?
What has been your biggest struggle with your wip?
Are there any animals in your story? Talk about them!
How do your characters get around? (ex: trains, horses, cars, dragons, etc.)
What part of your wip are you working on rn?
What aspects (tropes, maybe?) of your wip do you think will draw people in?
What are your hopes for your wip?
What pieces of media have been the most inspiring to you for this WIP?

7, 11, 18, 65, 74!
(This got a little long so let me put it under a cut)
7. How do you choose which POV to write from?
My default is 3rd person limited. I've only recently tried 1st person-- it can be downright addictive, because it puts you so close to the character. Thing is, I always feel like I need a *reason* to write 1st person, otherwise it can be a little strange to me??? Like why are we hearing them talk directly. Do they know they're writing a book*. So I usually stick with 3rd person limited. The only fics I'm working on right now that are 1st person are a Billy afterlife au-- I felt I needed his direct voice, also his "justification" is that he's dead. he's screaming into the void and trying to see if someone will listen-- and another one that's essentially "what if the ministry of time but with John Irving and also his bridge is a bisexual man of pakistani descent"-- the book was in 1st person so it made sense that a fic based on it would also be 1st person.
11. Link your three favorite fics right now.
Wait, of mine or of others? I'm gonna say of others. I've recently read If on an Arctic night an author which I think is one of my all-time favorite terror fics (as the author said in the tags: porn and post-modernism. it's amazing). Another all-time favorite terror fic is húshuō bādào which is essentially the other side of Fitzjames' Chinese sniper story and I cannot praise it enough. Lastly I'm still obsessed with I dreamed of the fine, deep harbour I'd find (50k word Hartving modern au my beloved)
If it's mine. Hands down best thing I wrote in terms of fanfic was Three Scenes from an Afterlife, I think. Unnatural and Detestable still works, I think, because of its smaller scale-- I tried to chronicle only a moment and not the whole history of something, so I think I managed to do ok. And if nothing else at least Jacko, the Ripper is funny.
18. Do you title your fics before, during, or after the writing process? How do you come up with titles?
Sometimes a title inspires a fic, other times I'm tearing my hair out trying to think of a title. I was listening to a Nicole Dollanganger song and it reminded me of hickeygibson, so I thought "hey, what if I wrote a Billy afterlife au with this line from the song as the title?" (still working on it). But with my Bryant/Chambers fic I had absolutely no idea what to call it, and then I thought "well I think I've used the idea of warmth as like a recurring thing here so. ok let's call it Warmth". Jacko, the Ripper was too good a pun to pass up. Unnatural and Detestable is from how the Articles of War in the navy described the crime of sodomy, and it plays well with Irving's self-loathing in that one.
65. Tell us about what you’re most looking forward to writing – in your current project, or a future project
My only ongoing fic is The War Between Us and Our Ghosts. I'm planning for next chapter to have Tommy and Pilk go on a "night on the town" before Pilk leaves for a while to go see his family in Bristol and then oops some gay stuff happens. I'm looking forward to that; only reason I haven't written it is bc I'd need to do some research on "things working class people in London would do for entertainment in the mid 19th century" like. Would they go to the theater? If so, which type of theater, with which type of plays? What might they have eaten? And I don't feel like looking it up *right now* so I haven't written it yet, lol.
For future projects, I think the "tmot but with jirv" thing will be quite fun if I do manage to continue it (i'm only posting after i finish writing it). can't wait to see how john irving deals with the modern world and how the narrator deals with falling in love with a "glorified zombie" as he's called him so far.
74. You’ve posted a fic anonymously. How would someone be able to guess that you’d written it?
I've never posted anonymously. I have no idea how one might guess I wrote it lol sorry.
*weirdly enough I only get this hang-up about fics. i've written original works before that do 1st person without feeling this kind of "offness".

Fic Tag Game
I was tagged by @beri-allen. Thanks!
How many works do you have on Ao3? 14
What's your Ao3 word count? 51 699
What fandoms do you write for? Currently only Wednesday, but I used to be really active in the Harry Potter fandom in middle/high school.
What are your top 5 fics by kudos? 1. Biology Lessons 2. I Dig You (Up) 3. Read the Fine Print 4. Payback Is a Bitch 5. Window Shopping
Do you respond to comments? I did for a bit but I honestly don't know what to say other than "alkjsjdf thank ily" and I feel super awkward. I love you all and your comments make my days brighter <3.
What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Why would you ask me, a porn writer, this... I Dig You (Up), 100%.
What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? I'm a porn writer, they all have ✨ happy endings ✨. I'd say Biology Lessons.
Do you get hate on fics? No hate so far, just one very very horny man who described what he did (in detail) while reading the fic. I deleted that comment after vomiting in my mouth a bit.
Do you write smut? What kind? Yes. And yes.
Do you write cross-overs? I've never been interested in crossovers. And I usually only fixate on one thing at a time.
Have you ever had a fic translated? No. Let me call my waifu real quick to see if she's interested in some translation work lol (we're both professional writers/translators)
Have you ever cowritten a fic before? No. Hmu tho 👀
What WIP you would like to finish, but doubt you ever will? I'll finish all of them... eventually. I will!
What's your all-time favorite ship? Let's go back to my roots: Wolfstar (Sirius Black x Remus Lupin) from Harry Potter. I've been in love with Remus since I was 9 and I love angsty relationships. I've had a thousand OTPs in my life, but they're my forever one.
What are your writing strengths? I will literally write 10k in one go.
What are your writing weaknesses? If I don't want to write, I will not write. I've literally stared at blank pages for months. But it's a cycle, I know I'll be back on my bullshit in no time.
Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic? Depends.
First fandom you wrote for? Harry Potter, closely followed by The Mortal Instruments.
Favorite fic you've ever written? I'm so so happy with Stuck in the Middle with You. It was a literal 6k word vomit that came out fabulous. I have to say that Heaven's a Place on Earth with You (a short Attack on Titan thing I wrote like 10 years ago) has a special place in my heart.
What fic would you want to rewrite one day? Frankly, all of them. I'm impatient and publish first drafts and I think they deserve some reworking. They're fine for now but if I ever want these to become a portfolio, they'll need some serious editing. This might be the right time to confess that all my fics are written by a possessed author, reread for typos once then published as they are. Y'all are tapping directly into my brain here.
I've been out of order for so long idk what's been going on/who's done this already. I tag @suchaladyy, @nonamemanga, @cupoteahatter, and @wincestation

I've been following you for a coupla years now ever since your xicheng era. It's interesting to see whenever you get into new fixations, it introduces me to lesser animes or BLs or new ships that otherwise I would never think of and more often than not I got hooked to them thanks to you 😁 I'm very shy and awkward so mostly in fandoms I'm in im just a silent enjoyer and follower. I'm so happy when you started posting and reblogging jjk because it's a fandom I've been silently lurking for years and moreover because you like stsg and also chousou because they are one of my favorites too. I pretty much enjoy reading your posts and your reblog tags, they are funny! May you share how you got into that? Because you mention one time that you regret those who drew you into jjk 😅 is it something to do with big fandom?
Ps. I like your fic so much, it's like a healing session after chapter 236, I thought i'd let you know here because i'm too shy to comment directly on the fic
Omg this is so sweet of you, anon, thank you! I hope y'know your kind words just made my whole day <3. Wow if you've been following me that long then you shud go off anon so I wud know who you are ^^ but I get it! I enjoy being silent lurker and follower too from times to times.
Also wow I'm amazed you've put up with my everchanging fixations that long lol I know I'm annoying that whenever I'm into new fixation then I wudn't shut up abt it for a while and too lazy to ever make sideblogs. Anw, I don't really remember when I said that ahaha I'd most likely just joked or be sarcastic when I wrote that. I did feel so much pain knowing my otp is a doomed ship but it's nothing I didn't know before I even started jjk. Moreover it ended in a good note for me what with the latest chapters of them so it's all good now. The abundant loveable characters of jjk making it easy to explore other dynamics and ships too. Even dynamics I'd usually nvr entertain so it's been an eye opener experience! I don't regret a thing. Glad to know we share similar tastes :)
but yea I'm really not good with big fandoms overall and am usually content with the tiny corner of my own. My last experience with big fandoms, before I switched completely to obscure fandoms, were too unpleasant that I didn't wish to ever repeat it. But I'm more adept with curating what I wanna see now so I won't get put-off or get bored quickly. Tiny fandoms are nice and comfy but they were oftentimes unsustainable for me due to the lack of interactions. Still, I'm so happy to hear my shitposts could actually introduce you to new fixations!
Abt how I get into jjk. Well, unlike any other animes mangas I'm into, I actually have irl friends and coworkers that are fans of jjk. 3 of them are close to me (one of them is my spouse lol) and had literally pestered me to try it for long so they'd have someone to talk with. So I'd known about it since around 2 years ago when the movie came out. I was curious bcs it was such a hype around me even though they were all adults who usually didn't even watch anime so there must be sth different abt it. Yet I kept putting it off cz I was just not into supernatural fantasy shounen. I decided this year would be a good time to start since with season 2 the hype around me was too high that I just got swept in it, naturally. I cudn't tamp down my curiosity any longer plus I got time now during this break so why not, right? The thing is my irl friends arent into simping let alone shipping (at least not that I know in public, who knows what they might be doing in private) so I keep that side here ofc!
Awwwh thank you so much for letting me know you like my fic! Ch 236 was indeed devastating for a while tho it was still a HE in some aspects (for me). It's an outlet for me to pour my HCs for the characters that stuck with me. I hope you know that even if it's just excited emojis, a comment in the fic worths a lot for authors cz it let them know not just abt whether their fics are being read and liked, but how their works actually affect the readers, it's a potent drive for authors and feedbacks are helping authors so you don't need to be shy 😉

@oldchipbuddy
Not the person who made the initial post, but I can offer clarification here. So the reason a boycott works is because it leverages collective action. This is because corporations are big enough that they can easily take a hit if just a few people are like "eh, nope!" but they rely on sales to make money. When you decide to start a boycott, this means you need to assess your reach and resources first, because, like you say, not everyone has 100k followers.
The first thing is that you're gonna have scale your boycott to your resources. If you don't have 100k followers and national/international reach, you're not going to be able to start something on a nationa/international scale. In this scenario you have two options: you can create a local initiative that focuses on a particular outlet and that outlet's management, or you can tag along on the initiative someone with much larger reach and influence has established. Both are worth doing.
If you are going with a local issue, you're gonna want to reach out to people who are likely to already be aligned with you. If you can reach out to groups directly (for example, emailing a member like "hey x company is underpaying their workers, I want to set up a boycott for this particular location until that particular location pays its workers better, you in?") or putting up fliers in places that are well-trafficked to let people know what's up if you don't have a way to reach out directly. If you're going with the local approach, set your expectations accordingly: you're not going to change the overall company, but you can help the people in your community get paid what they're worth.
If you want to tag along with someone, you are becoming part of the people power that makes their reach valuable. It doesn't matter how many followers a person has if none of those follower will, well, follow. From the sound of it, this is already kinda what you're doing. In this case, someone else is making waves and your job is to back that up so that the company continues to feel the economic pressure.
But your question was less about how to join up, and more about how to communicate to the company. In both the local and broad scenarios, you're likely going to get a person or group of people spearheading the initiative. Likely, they're going to be the people communicating directly with management at a company, and then the people who are participating echoes, saying "yeah, what leader-person said, we're with them. we're not buying until x reform is demonstrated."
If that person is you, then what you're going to do is assess the number of people you have backing you, and what you think their stamina is going to be. If it's going to be harder for them to stay for the long haul, pick changes that can be made more easily and don't require as much of a profit loss to the company. If you've got a more seasoned group, you can set your goal a bit higher for deeper changes. The thing to remember is that a higher chance of some change is better than a lower chance of a lot of change. Reform can happen in steps, and it's easier to get the necessary momentum if you can demonstrate that what you're trying to do creates results.
Once you have your people, there are two ways to go about the next step. If you have enough momentum already, the local news may do your job for you, and pick up the story. In that case, your job is making sure you keep your story straight so that it's harder bad actors to villainize your movement, and have a clear message so that more people will be inclined to join.
If it isn't something the local news wants, then you can set up a meeting with people who have some level of authority to do what you want them to do. I'd coordinate via emailing civilly, respectfully, and professionally. The timing of when you do this can vary because at this point you're very much playing a power game. If you think they might roll over more easily, you might reach out kinda early and say "hey this community's really upset, and is ready to boycott but if we work this out, we can come away mutually benefiting" and then give them the opportunity to use their change as a PR boost "hey we're so responsible cause look we care for the community!" OP got at this a little bit, but I'm gonna say it more directly: boycotting is a leverage tool for negotiating - if you're just trying to penalize someone, they're gonna see you as a sunk cost and move on instead of being willing to change their behavior. If instead it's something you're really gonna have to push at, you can let the momentum build a bit so that they feel the pressure and then reach out like "hey let's figure out a way to make this work." In either case, you can take the results of the meeting back to your movement to incentivize continued action.
This post got long, so I'm gonna cap it here, but if anyone wants me to go into more detail on any of this, lemme know
Hey remember that a boycott if actually MORE effective under capitalism if you profess you would actually end the boycott under certain conditions.
“Nothing this company does can make up for their bad actions, I will never buy from them again!” Okay so they’ve lost you as a customer and have no reason to try and get you back. You can HOPE to drive them into bankruptcy but Chic-Fil-A is evidence of how well that works.
“This company did something bad. I would not consider buying their product again, UNLESS, they publicly apologized and made up for it by … [donating money to a cause, promoting different content, offering better care to their employees, etc.]” This is actually MORE likely to be effective because if enough people say this, the company m sees them as potential customers of a certain demographic, and is willing to make changes to get those customers back and, long term, make money from them.

❤️ What is your favorite line that you’ve written in a fic?
💕 What is your favorite fic that you’ve written?
😎 What fics do you prefer on a scale of canon compliant to wildly original?
❤️ What is your favorite line that you’ve written in a fic?
Y'know what, I think I do actually have a standing answer to this! Although now I don't know whether to be concerned or not cuz it's an old line XD But I posted an unfinished (as in, bracketed author's notes still in the text kind of unfinished) fic specifically so as not to lose the line, so I shall slap it in here.
Ah. Turns out it works best as a set of lines, but it was still the first thing that popped into my head, so here goes:
CW: Non-Graphic Animal Death
Carlos was counting the lab mice, suspicious that the bonsai they lived next to may have picked up some carnivorous tendencies. [...] Carlos lost count of his mice. His hands hovered over the cage, frozen. What had Cecil just said? Miss Frizzle? Aunt Valerie ? It refused to process. Carlos turned away from the cage to grab his phone, missing as the bonsai unfurled a branch and snagged a mouse by its tail and dragged it, shrieking, into its thick leaves.
END CW
💕 What is your favorite fic that you’ve written?
Oh, gosh, there are a few contenders. I could say the first one I remembered making, because I got to hand it to Mary Pope Osbourne before I knew giving authors fic was Bad. And I really don't remember much about the contents of it, just that it was handwritten and I did a little cover for it.
Of my modern fic, I think I'll pick two, due to them being the fics I've shown the most commitment to.
Face to Unfamiliar Face, recursive fic of @tulipscomeinallsortsofcolors's Love and Other Fairy Tales. I think about it a lot because I'd like to do more work on it. Alas, every time I go into it thinking that this time I will post it to AO3, I start sketching out major structural edits and get scared of the workload and let the poor thing keep languishing. I should just carry it over directly and then redux it later, just for the purpose of archiving it. Maybe I'll do that today. (Thank you in advance if so, Willow 💜)
And The Princess's Son (Ba, Ba), a Witcher fic where Jaskier is Renfri's kid. It haunts me constantly. I think as-posted, it's finished and satisfying from a reader's perspective, but from my Author's Vision it's unfinished, so the haunting continues. Alas, the redux keeps stalling out in the first few chapters. And then I don't want to just skip forward to get it started with because I feel like I can better build up the Lilit stuff so it's not such a Deus Ex Machina, even if I don't think I've changed all that much about the mechanics of her whole Thing. 😭
😎 What fics do you prefer on a scale of canon compliant to wildly original?
I think solidly in the middle as a reader? I know I lightly avoid 'modern AU' tags in AtLA and Witcher and stuff, but not strenuously. I like plenty of Sanders Sides fic where they're proper people and not just figments in the mindscape. But I think I also prefer to read when it's not super rooted in canon, either? Fleshed out side characters and Everybody Lives, Nobody Dies for the win, baby!!!
Now as a writer...
One of my provided filter-able tags is canon divergence XD I still like to keep things pretty rooted in canon, though. I like having a scaffolding to build around. Going too far into original territory tends to make everything feel a little too wobbly.
I think the most original I get is smashing together fandoms that don't necessarily make sense based on tiny details. (Or details that aren't there. Ben Wishaw and Colin Morgan are just. Connected in my brain for some reason and so I have Once And Future...Spy?!)

//I'll answer these for Mun as I tagged it Munday =) Questions for movie fans Specify if for mun and/or muse! - @dontcxckitup
What’s your favorite movie?
Mun: THE MUMMY RETURNS/The Mummy - I mean as if it wasn't obvious. I love the mummy returns so much it's just so much fun and so quotable and it's one of those formative films that made me fall in love with adventure/pulp movies like that.
I also really love: The World's End, Galaxy Quest and Muppet Treasure Island, Die Hard.
Who’s your favorite actress/actor? -
So I have a few, I used to get very hyperfocused on actors, but I'm going to be honest I might not have seen everything they've been in. I think part of this is because I really like characters so if they have several characters I like I just class them as my favourite actors. I also think Rickman's death had an impact on me getting too attached to actors/actresses.....
Anyway, my favourites are: Rachel Weisz, Alan Rickman, Sam Neill, TIlda Swinton
Do you collect anything movie-related? Is there a backstory to any of those items?
So I used to collect DVD's and I have about 300+ of those but I stopped because of streaming/room/cost. They used to be a special thing I could get when I wasn't earning very much money. I have a few pop funkos and such but I think my collecting of movie/tv stuff really stopped after a certain author revealed herself to be a certain type of way. I don't want to get into politics here but that franchise was my specialist interest and I knew everything and I had so much merch, even a lot of stuff from before the films ever came out. I even have sticker books with animations from before the movies were released. I just found that I couldn't, in good conscious, keep engaging with the franchise and talking about - which kind of meant endorsing it - when the author/creator was and still is actively trying to hurt a minority of people.
I still have the stuff in my loft, packed away safe in case she ever apologises and realises the error of her ways but it kind of made me hesitant about collecting a lot of movie stuff.
That being said I do enjoy getting stuff that's like not directly merch but more fan created or something I see and associate with the movie (if that makes sense) - so like I have a Mark Sloan (Diagnosis Murder) build a bear. I have a star trek build a bear too with a little phaser.
That was a lot of rambling sorry!
Are there any movies that had a huge impact on you? In what way?
The Mummy/The Mummy Returns - It influences everything. I think watching it was one of the first times I sort of registered that this is how you do good, 3 dimensional characters. It's such a fantastic example of how to do a good ensemble cast movie. A brilliant example of how to balance comedy and horror and I adore it.
There's a lot of movies that have had a huge impact on me in different areas of my life so it kind of depends what we're talking about. I have to break them down and catergorise them haha!
Have you ever met an actress/actor? -
Tv actors and actresses I've met a few, I used to know someone who worked in soaps over here in the UK and they'd often have parties with soap actresses/actors.
I met Bianca Del Rio at a meet and greet.
I had the opportunity to meet a few at the Macbeth Premiere in Edinburgh but I was too nervous and chickened out (I wanted to meet Paddy Considine and have him sign something for me so BAD).
I just get too nervous tbh. So I don't know if I'd be able to meet one.
