okay not to go cringe on main but the final episode of the 2003 series truly is an absolute and unmitigated masterpiece of storytelling. the constant back-and-forth between the past timelines, where Tobio and Atom both rejected Tenma’s twisted version of love with the exact same words, and the present, where Tenma and Atom have their last on-screen interaction??? the seamless transition of Atom riding in the elevator to meet Tenma in the lab, only to end in a cut back to Tobio and Tenma stepping out of that exact same elevator in the past??? that flashback where Tenma is clutching Tobio’s body, sobbing hysterically in the middle of the street??? when Atom says “you never loved anyone, you never loved me at all”??? when Ochan is fighting like hell to get into the Ministry and when Tawashi tries to stop him, he says “my son is in there”???? all those flashbacks to the previous episodes as a big Nostalgic Gut-Punch, reminding you just how far Atom has come, and how much he has grown up over the course of the series???? Tenma’s desperate attempts to manipulate Atom and win him back over to his side??? Tenma’s quiet resignation when Atom refuses him??? Atom’s refusal to leave Tenma behind in the Ministry????

the Hug™️ between Atom and Tenma??? how Tenma freezes for such a long second that you think he isn’t going to react at all??? how he lets out the exact same anguished sob that he did when he saw Tobio’s body in the road?? how Atom calls him “father”??? Atom’s choice to forgive, and forgive, and forgive???? when Tenma finally refers to Atom by his true name instead of the name he tried to give him??? when Tenma gently pushes Atom toward Ochanomizu and says “he’s a good father, and I am not”?? when Tenma sits in his prison cell and looks at the pictures of Atom and Tobio side-by-side, because he has accepted Atom as his own person now, and he truly understands and regrets his actions??? when Ochan finally declares equal rights for robots, and all the various humans hugging and congratulating the robots around them, giving them gifts and thanking them for their services??? how Atom watches silently from the shadows, thinking about all the robots who were hurt or killed in the long and painful fight??? the palpable relief that the fight is over now??? the final shot of Atom sitting on the rooftop, staring out over the city???? god i’m gonna go chew some electrical wires!!!!

I really think father and hohenheim should have been the same character? I mean, father is such a bland villain. Maybe I just haven't looked enough but I haven't seen even the most hardcore bh fans talk about him? It's all just about how ed punched god or whatever. No one's actually interested in the guy himself. I can think of several ways them being the same person would make it a lot more interesting, at least to me. I mean, first of all ed and al having to fight their own shitty father is some delicious angst. Second I really like the mad scientist type character and that's what hoho would be in that scenario. Third I think it would be fun to analyse the "sins" he took out of himself if he was a human to begin with. Ohh and come to think of it, it would go really well with Ed's whole "alchemists are the closest things to God yadda yadda" speech in the beginning wouldn't it? Honestly I can't think of any reason why they had to be different people at all...Ah, except how can I forget. Arakawa's writing this. Of course they have to be two different people. One who actually did all the wrong things and the loving father and husband who's going around trying to make everything right(nevermind that he left Trisha to care for their 4-5 yos all alone with no support. Nuh uh he's perfect) If she held the fact that the two can in fact be the same person it might just explode her world. I'm rolling my eyes.

Father and Hohenheim as the same character? Who is a mad scientist? Who as a result reimburses Ed's pompous "Alchemists are the closest things to god"? Blends aspects of being an unforgivable monster with having loved his family? I've got your guy!

Oh sure, he's not the final big bad that the Elric bros have to fight, and sure he's more of a retired villain who's mildly penitent for his centuries of bloodshed, rather than continuing to enact widespread destruction. But we do get to see the results of all his transgressions against humanity and his own first son too! So, 🎉 ta-da! 🎉

To actually address your ask:

Besides what 03 had already done, for awhile I actually thought Father WAS Hohenheim in Brotherhood.

To clarify: I avoided the online fandom from 2009 onward in order to prevent getting spoiled for the (at the time) new fma adaptation. I kept putting off watching it for well over a decade (lol), and for no other reason then a combo of 1) not being in the mood for more fma, and 2) when I was, I would immediately run right back to fma 03 without fail, and then be so thoroughly satisfied with revisiting a long time fave that I just. Would put off watching Broho for another time.

Still, being online in any capacity meant that every once in awhile I was unavoidably being exposed to the odd screenshot, text post, and fanart. No big deal, nothing really spoiled anything heavily enough for me to know the full story, and I could easily scroll away before making sense out of anything.

But I did one day stumble into a screenshot of Father glowering in his underground throne. And here I thought "Oh shit! Hohenheim is actually in full villain mode this time around?! We're going to actually explore the mass annihilation he commits for philosopher stones and how his sons will have to contend with their own father. This will surely dig even deeper into Ed and Al's heel turn against the military, and what alchemy means as a method of power and control. Man, this is gonna fuck!"

So to my now endless disappointment I finally watched Brotherhood this last spring. And although I surprisingly liked* this affable, bumbling, rather tragic version of Hohenheim (which stumps me, given my initial assumption for Brotherhood AND being a long time Hohenheim of Light enjoyer) (I still like Hoho of Light more tho), Father was such a fucking let down on every front.

*Don't get me wrong, I'm not claiming Von Hohenheim didn't do wrong against Trisha and his kids. As much as he had to build the anti-circle around Amestris, it doesn't erase the fact that Trisha had to shoulder the full burden of raising their kids, and child Ed's sense of abandonment and outrage against him is highly warranted.

Even keeping Father as a homunculus that duplicates Hohenheim's appearance, he still could have been an interesting character and villain. But every step of the way he was just the obvious big bad mostly relegated to the background, stored away except for a few key encounters and flashbacks. He was paper thin, an easy excuse for why the core ills of Amestris are all his exclusive fault, and conveniently the canon has an in-baked reason for why he has the personality and stage presence of cardboard. Woo. hoo.

God the lore and function of homunculi blows in mangahood. At the very least make me actually feel like they are parts of this once former-cyclops in a bottle! And still make Father an actually compelling character! In fact the other homunculi could have potentially been an effective vehicle for that, but noooooo-

Honestly, I agree. It would have been so much more affecting for Hohenheim and Father to be one, singular character. Of course much of his backstory would have to change, but that's not a loss in my hater's opinion. The implications for the Elrics, for their paradigms to be entirely torn asunder and have to be rebuilt in order to survive and make sense out of their position in Amestris, it would have been juicy.

You're right, I have seen next to no deeper interest or investment into Father as a character and as a narrative device from hardcore fans either. I'm sure it does exist, given Brotherhood's immense popularity, but damn if we can be forgiven for getting the impression that most fans just don't give a rat's unseasoned ass. I see more posts and fanart for Von Hohenheim than I do Father lol

Mangahood simply can't have (or actually address) any truly murky topics, or depict messy and complex characterization, if it doesn't ultimately shine the brightest, most admirable, most absolving light on our protags as possible. So why would Von Hohenheim have anything to do with Father besides having been his victim?

We remain starved by the emaciated, sorry excuse for 'pathos' that is Father's whole deal. What a shame.

This is actually so fucking stupid. The file on our Loki variant states that they were born with a “fluid” sex (whatever the fuck that means), and we are to assume that a lot of parts of variants are intrinsically the same between each other, so you’d assume that Sylvie would also be born with a “fluid” sex

10:07 - Loki and Sylvie are finally bonding by discussing what “makes a Loki a Loki” and Loki insisting that its their collective ability to survive - of course they have to be fucking weird about it which causes a Nexus event, because plot i guess

11:00 - i hate that we don't get to actually see Loki and Sylvie get picked up

12:39 - isn't it a little fun, a little silly, that the bad memory Loki is stuck in is Sif saying “I hope you know you deserve to be alone and you always will be”

17:17 - it's interesting however that it doesn't really hit for Loki until after hes admitted that he does things for attention because he's scared of being alone - BUT i don't like that that is probably reason that the writers had for him falling for Sylvie, him thinking that because she is like him that she has similar fears and thus wouldn't do something to lose that companionship, rather instead it would have been interesting in its use to how Loki has inexplicably grown attached to Mobius of all people (especially because it is immediately followed by Mobius coming in)

15:27 - “aren’t you supposed to be interrogating your variant pet?” r15 to Mobius

19:11 - “I'm going to miss these little tete-a-tetes.” “Me too.” mocking from Mobius, a bit more genuine from Loki

34:26 - okok, i think it's fun and a little silly that Loki has a big reaction to Mobius being pruned, one that's harder for him to conceal than the one when he's told that Sylvie’s been pruned - but also, a bit nitpicky here i know, it's really dumb that he's just standing there, he doesn't even try to reach out to Mobius to move him out of the way or anything

41:18 - the “No, i have to tell you something” & “back on lamentis…. This is new for me.” & grabbing Sylvie’s shoulders - clearly supposed to set up the idea that Loki has some-fucking-how fallen for Sylvie (which is dumb as even worse written than most straight relationships) and wants to tell her now? For some reason? HOWEVER, it could have so easily been (and would have been better) instead, him trying to tell her that he trusts her and sees her as a partner in crime and a friend. Because that's the whole thing, right? Loki is scared of being alone, and yet doesn't do friends, and doesn't do partners, because he knows that he will always be alone anyways. The nexus event is him finding solace in the fact that he will die beside a friend rather than alone like he's always known he would. But nooo selfcest is definitely better than meaningful friendships, why dont you fucking kill me for thinking otherwise. Anyways he gets pruned here anyways so L Loki, fucking loser.

Episode 5

Unrelated but where the hell did the Lokis get their clothes - like, i get Sylvie because shes been fucking off all over the timeline for a long time, but everyone in the void? Why do they have their clothes

Again it seriously kills me that Sylvie has no character - no likes, no goals outside of destroying the TVA, no self-reflection, she's the woman character that is smarter and cooler than her male counterparts because they need to be looked after in order to not be killed

Another note on this, we can get a vague idea of what Loki will want when everything is over - he jokes about wanting to rule an entire universe/timeline, but in reality everyone knows he will just want to go somewhere where he's cared about and seen as equal, somewhere where he won't be alone - but we don't know what Sylvie will want, we cant even conceive an idea, because all we know is that she wants the TVA and whoever controls it gone, and we can assume that she wanted to be a valkyrie when she was little, but we know literally nothing else about her, so we have to assume either her and Loki are going to figure out their paths together, or that she will go off to figure it out on her own and we won't hear or see her again until she has a dumb cameo I think i would respect how little we know about Sylvie if it were a “i've spent so much of my life surviving and fixated on this one thing that i haven't had time to figure out who i am as a person and what i like and what i want after its all over”, but we never get anything like this, at least in any kind of depth that would make it good The Strong Woman trope is what I was looking for

16:04 - “Have any of you met a woman variant of us?” “Sounds terrifying.” i'm going to bash my head against the wall until my brains are crawling out the other side

Whoo president Loki, aka the only version of Loki selfcest i can stand behind, because at least commit to the bit if you're gonna do it

The one black Loki is the overly aggressive one that betrays everyone first, because what else should we expect from hollywood. Fucks sake

I do adore that the Lokis have so easily adopted Mobius within their little group and how good he is at understanding all of them

okay, I'm not saying that they should have made Mobius the love interest, however I absolutely am saying that. I personally think that would be far more compelling than the selfcest plot, it wouldn't be out of nowhere like i'm sure some may argue because so much of this show was spent on showing that Mobius is the only person that's been able to truly understand Loki and get a good read on them and Loki views him as a friend despite it all, on the other hand i think the selfcest plotline is absolutely out of nowhere, but its not viewed as such because its portrayed as straight and thus expected, they have little to no romantic chemistry, they have had very very very few scenes where they are interacting positively with each other that aren't surrounded with the fact that they are working together because they have the same goal and are trying to survive and most of those interactions are sandwiched between arguing.  I just think this scene could have easily been about Loki acknowledging that he cares about Mobius in a way that he doesn't think he has anyone else before, Sylvie could make a call back to her mailman, and then Loki can go quiet and amongst that have the blanket thing w/o the strange glances and awkward pauses and then they can discuss betrayal and what they want to do once everything is all over

I hate this show so so much, but i do really like when the silly mascot character that is kind of overlooked as comedic relief turns out to be a vessel for the villain, or at least are more sinister than they first seemed and they just become kind of uncanny and unsettling 

I also really like immortal characters that have been alive for so long that they are truly exhilarated by their end

33:45 - Loki having a “no stop, this isn't you ;(” moment is so funny

34:56 - the grossest moment of the show. Selfcest, ladies and gentlemen!

35:12 - i feel like it is very important to note that sylvie saying “but i'm not you” here, is NOT her denying that her and Loki are the same, just that the experience and feeling that Loki is expressing is not shared

39:49 - “Who are you? What's your name?” Mobius to Loki - sobs it's so upsetting i can't do this - imagine how much more tragic this scene would've been if Mobius was set up as the love interest shm my head stupid fucking show

"Loki?" Mobius walked into his office where Loki was sitting flipping through files.

They were leaving in a few hours for Alabama in 2050.

"Yes?"

"Would you mind accompanying me to the projection room? I want to show you something."

Loki stood up and nodded.

"Let's go."

They entered the room where Loki had been viewing parts of his past and future life when he arrived at the TVA

Everything that made him a villain.

He stopped when he saw the projector on the table in the middle of the room.

"If this is to make me cruelly realize who I am, so I can keep me on a short leash before the mission, it's not worth it."

Loki turned around ready to leave the room.

"Loki, no!"

Mobius held him back by the sleeve, Loki struggled blinded by the feeling of disappointment that washed over him.

Mobius wrapped his arms around him from behind and said in his ear;

"Loki, I promise you that it is not about that. This time it's my turn to ask you to please trust me."

Loki stopped struggling and let Mobius pull him into the room and he made him sit in front of the screen.

Mobius stood behind him with his hands on his shoulders and gently asked Loki, "Do you remember what you said you were, in this very room last time?"

Loki bowed his head and whispered, "A villain."

Mobius continued, "And do you remember what I replied?"

"That this was not how you saw it."

Mobius pressed his shoulders and answered, "That's right. And I want to show you why I said that. I'm going to show you two excerpts from your past life and one from your future life.Is it okay to watch them?"

Loki just nodded.

Mobius pressed the power button and resumed his place behind Loki with his hands on his shoulders.

"I can stop anytime you want, you just have to say so."

Loki nodded again.

He saw himself and his brother in their ceremonial clothes just before Thor's enthronement.

Thor was taking his helmet presented to him by a servant.

Loki looked at him and said with a half smile, "Oh... nice feathers. "

Thor laughed wryly before replying, "You don't really want to start this again do you?

Loki protested, "I was sincere. "

"You are incapable of sincerity. "

"Am I?"

" Yes "

Loki looked at his brother with affection and replied very seriously, "I've looked forward to this day as long as you have, my brother, my friend. Sometimes I'm envious, but never doubt that I love you. "

Thor put his hand on his shoulder and said softly, "Thank you."

Loki could hardly swallow the lump that had formed in his throat.

They may have clashed often, they may have been on bad terms when Loki ran away, but Thor was the person he missed the most since he was here.

Mobius paused and stood in front of him, kneeling down to be at his level.

He simply placed his hand on Loki's arm and asked, "Do you think someone who shows such brotherly love is a villain?"

Then he stood up, not waiting for an answer and pressed play again.

The scene was happening in Odin's room.

Odin was staring thoughtfully out the window and then turned away. Frigga sat in a vanity and tried different earrings before the mirror.

Odin asked her, "Do you think he's ready?"

"He thinks he is. He has his father's confidence." answered Frigga gently.

Odin retorted,"He'll need his father's wisdom."

Friga laughed and answered impertinently, "And his humility?"

Then Frigga added, "Thor won't be alone. Loki will be at his side to give him counsel. Have faith in your sons."

Loki could not remember ever having witnessed such a scene between his mother and father. He had never imagined his parents discussing Thor and him in this way, it was strange in a way. He had felt like he was witnessing a private scene. But to hear his mother talk about him in this way was beyond comprehension.

Mobius simply said to him before the footage continued, "Do you think a villain would inspire such faith in him from his mother, who is not even of his blood, do you think a mother would put her trust in one brother to support the other if deep down she thought he was a villain?"

The question hung in the air as the video resumed.

When Loki saw the scene beginning to unfold before his eyes, he protested and wanted to stand up, "Mobius, I've seen it before, I know this is the scene where I die!"

Mobius put his hands on Loki's shoulders again and said, "Look at it again this time, please. I really think you need to see it to the end."

Loki was talking to Thanos, "If I might, interject… If you’re going to Earth, you might want a guide. I do have a bit of experience in that arena."

Thanos glared at him and replied "If you consider failure experience…"

Loki, losing none of his cockiness, answered, "I consider experience, experience. Almighty Thanos. I, Loki, Prince of Asgard… Odinson… The rightful King of Jotunheim, God of Mischief, do hereby pledge to you, my undying fidelity."

Thor squinted and noticed a dagger in Loki’s hand. Loki attempted to stab Thanos, but failed.

“Undying. You should choose your words more carefully."

Thanos tightened his hold around Loki’s neck.

Loki made eye contact with Thor before Thanos increased his force on his neck.

He struggled to articulate, "You… will never be… a god."

Thanos snapped Loki’s neck, killing him then added, "No resurrection this time." before disappearing.

Loki closed his eyes, unable to stop a tear from rolling down his cheek.

Mobius leaned over and said softly in his ear, "Loki, watch, I know it's hard, but please watch."

Thor was crying, "No… Loki…"

He was then released from his binds and crawled over to Loki’s body. He laid his head down on Loki’s chest, shedding tears.

Mobius knelt before Loki and took his hands, "Loki, after this, after many twists and turns, Thanos has lost and you played a part in his loss. Your death played a part. But more than that, after all you've been through, all the times you've faced each other, do you think Thor would have cried for you like that, if you were a villain? Loki, you are worth so much more than you think you are destined to be."

Mobius wiped away Loki's tear stain with his thumb and let his hand linger on the god's cheek.

Loki asked him in a slightly hoarse voice, "But why show me this, why would you want to convince me of the opposite of what you wanted me to recognize first."

"Oh no Loki, I never wanted you to think you were a villain, I wanted you to see that you were not the one you insist on parading to the world."

Loki protested, "But you told me I was born to cause pain and suffering and death. That's how it is, that's how it was, that's how it will be. All so that others can achieve their best versions of themselves. "

"Yes, I told you that not because I think that's what you are, I was just showing you that that's what you were limiting yourself to because you yourself think you're only capable of that. Because you want to rule so badly, that you don't see that you are made for bigger things. You asked me to trust you yesterday. I did because Loki I have faith in you and since you've been here you keep proving it. In your own way. Because you are undoubtedly the god of mischief. Unique. Not. A. Villain."

Mobius took his chin and placed a kiss on his forehead before standing up.

"I'll leave you alone for a bit, let you take some time to think about this, I'll come get you before the mission briefing." he headed for the door.

"Mobius?"

"Yes." Mobius came back to him as Loki stood up.

"I don't know why, but I really, really want to believe you."

Seeing a man as powerful as Loki, showing so much fragility and hope at the same time, Mobius thought he had never found him as magnificent as he was at that moment. He felt blessed that Loki had exposed such vulnerability to him.

"It's not an easy road, Loki, but it's worth it.It's not easy being a man, but that's why it's so wonderful when you manage to overcome the obstacles. Don't forget that you are not or no longer alone, I will be there every step of the way.  You just have to find the right direction."

Loki nodded and chuckled, "I don't know what deities decided to put you on my path, but I'm glad that it’s you."

He felt blessed that Loki would show such vulnerability.

"It's not an easy road, Loki, but it's worth it.It's not easy being a man, but that's why it's so wonderful when you manage to overcome the obstacles. Don't forget that you are not or no longer alone, I will be there every step of the way.  You just have to find the right direction."

Loki nodded and chuckled, "I don't know what deities decided to put you on my path, but I'm glad that it's you."

For once since the beginning of their strange relationship, Loki took the initiative and kissed Mobius lightly before stepping back."Go, I'll stay here for a while, a god of mischief can't show up with swollen and red eyes, there are limits to the lack of decorum."  He finished by winking at him.

Mobius chuckled before leaving.

Once the door closed, he whispered, "Me too Loki, I'm glad fate connected us."

Loki was standing in front of the portal through which the woman had just disappeared and deep down he knew he was going to have to follow her.

Not because of all the bullshit he had spouted at her just before.

Not because of his personal interests, well not only because of his personal interests. He was Loki after all.

But because of the man who was running towards him shouting.

Mobius.

Because Mobius had seen in him more than a glorious purpose.

Because even if it was for his personal interests, Mobius had needed him.

Because Mobius had made him see that he could be a better version of himself.

Because Loki was starting to believe it.

So as he turned to Mobius who was running towards him he put everything he could into his eyes.

Then, reluctantly, he turned away and went through the portal.

So exhibit A: The tweet. 

Exhibit B is the interview they gave before the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in 2016. Lewis said quite a lot of interesting things. There’s a short, nice version of the interview; especially Lewis part after 2:03 HERE. Take a deep breath before watching. Karting. Unicycling. Kellogg’s Frosties. Pizza. Doing crazy things. Motorbike tours. If you look closely, you can see that Nico almost starts crying when Lewis mentions that. He literally wipes over his face. Please. My heart cannot take this. And THEN. THEN. They’d talked about going to F1 together as kids! He doesn’t explicitely mention The Night In Greece, but it was a couple of days before that tweet was made so Lewis clearly brought some memories back up when he talked about their friendships like that... This is the whole interview, the part I highlighted in the shorter version is here at 17:26 give or take. I didn’t rewatch the whole interview right now, but that’s the only one I can think of where they almost explicitely talk about it! (I also wrote a fic about this way back in 2016. It’s pretty bad because it was my first english fic ever, oops.)

Anyway, I can’t really provide other sources I’m afraid, it really came from that tweet and became a fandom mythos - but I just dug around so much I found a fun article with quotes from other drivers. 

- Robert Kubica: “They would even have races to eat pizza, always eating two at a time.” - Dino Chiesa (their karting boss): “Many times I was called by reception about some problem in the room. It might be noise or they might have broken something. They would never sleep, so they were always tired the next morning. Both liked ice cream so much, particularly vanilla. During the night, they wanted to eat ice cream always, so I had to go out everywhere and find some to keep them happy.” 

There was also a German interview from 2009 I think where they said they used to “wrestle” in the hotel rooms, unfortunately that got deleted, but BBC quotes: “Hamilton and Rosberg competed over pizza slices and wrestling matches “ in this article (there’s also a nice video of Nico talking about Lewis and telling everyone that he has the most talented, bestest, greatest husband... honestly Nico is a bigger Lewis fan than me which SHOULD be impossible but here we are!!). 

I can’t find anything else right now because I’m not entirely sure what I’ve made up in my head and what’s real, but I thought there was something where either of them explicitely says that they were sitting under a tree, at night, looking at the stars. But that might just be my headcanon because I can picture that so well. A warm summer night, the ocean waves audible in the distance, a soft wind rustling the leaves of the tree above them. They sit there, next to each other but both leaned with their backs against the tree trunk. Maybe they were laying on their backs to look at the stars just moments before but now, now that they’re having a serious conversation they sit there like that... talking about how they will be world champions one day. Making plans which teams they want to drive for - as team mates, obviously. Arguing about which tracks they’re going to fight battles on, which tracks Lewis will win easily, which win will Nico snatch away from him right before the finishing line. They laugh, and dream, and they’re so young and everything seems possible. They feel invincible. Then, suddenly, Lewis straddling Nico and they kiss, softly, so softly, the wind cooling the sweat on their skin. They’re one, and their future is bright. 

I love them so much. I hope that whatever happend during that night - I hope the happiness they dreamed of tasted anything like the champagne on a podium.
