16. What is the most over-hyped book you read this year?

....okay full disclosure i have now been staring at my shelves for five (5) minutes trying to decide if i've read ANYthing that counts as "hyped," much less "over-hyped" and honestly i am...not sure that i have haha. NK Jemisin is fabulous as usual with GREAT CITIES, so she obviously doesn't count, and i did also really enjoy STARLING HOUSE (although that's probably the closest thing i have to hyped on my shelves).

i was fairly underwhelmed by HOW TO SELL A HAUNTED HOUSE by Grady Hendrix, but i'm not sure that one hits the Hyped Threshold haha. i just found him. mediocre. but i feel like i'd heard good things about him so... *shrug moji*

17. Did any books surprise you with how good they were?

i was surprised by how gripping and tense THE NIGHT GUEST was (many content warnings apply). i was not expecting to have as good of a time with DAYSWORK by Bachelder and Habel as i did--same thing with KAIJU PRESERVATION SOCIETY. i love happy surprise reads!
