the terror (2018), last 3 eps

this is primarily for @corinthes, whom i’ve been yelling at for the past few days bc of this show. it got a bit lengthy and and i doubt you’d enjoy reading this from the chat box. spoilers beware for anyone curious enough.

i feel like episode 8 is the calm before the shitstorm that is ep 9-10 and it certainly has the feel of a filler episode, but i love it nonetheless. people talk! people have lines and are given the time to deliver them! francis and james have this important conversation even before the credits roll and that makes it all the more important. i love this scene; i see what you mean about how it belongs to a stage. it's just two guys having a heartfelt convo, beautifully acted. when the camera goes further and shows them standing apart, right in the middle of the frame, in this vast wasteland, looking at each other and having an understanding--gaawwd.

tobias's delivery of "i would like that very much" was so good! so vulnerable and open and hopeful. even now, he needs validation and it's important that he gets it from francis. and francis--having labeled the ship as a confessor--fills the ships' gap and becomes the confessor for everyone apparently. and at this point, he's reached god-like zen bc seriously he looks so put together after everyone's spilled their guts out to him. til the end, he dispenses "i forgive you" and "you did your best" and "you're a good lad" like pancakes. and he starts calling people by their first name too. and this, coming from a francis crozier who has known to be miserable and disagreeable, is called d e v e l o p m e n t. further on, when tells his lieutenants that if they got sick, he wouldn't leave them either, i thought "yes, i would die for you, i would follow you to hell and back". thank you, jared, for this performance.

i loved the almost-hanging scene too. it's a very looong scene and it's sad how so few shows actually take the time to have their characters talk! i can easily imagine this on a stage, complete with atmospheric smoke and sepia lighting. i knew that letter was gonna bite francis in the ass. i was waiting for it and hickey put down that card in the best time possible. hickey, you are a murdering, mutinous son of a bitch, but i also can't help but admire you.

ep 9 is like one sucker punch after another. god wants you to live, can we sleep, bridal carry, what can i do for you sir--this is... too much. special props tho to goodsir bc he has been through some shit. this show has added so many actors to my watch-for-next-projects list and that includes paul ready. he goes through such a transformation, so filled with hope and optimism and empathy and by the time they ask him to butcher gibson, he just looks so fucking done. we know he's going to die and it won't be by anyone else's hand. i love the part where hickey stabs gibson and they get into a struggle, but it’s less a physical struggle and more a battle of wills. can't believe they brought out the bits of glass from episode xX. his death was so beautifully shot. first, from where he sits still and looks in the direction of the camera while the tent canvass behind him thrashes wildly. that was hauntingly beautiful. then when he cuts his wrists but we can't see his face, only his spasms. and then when he pictures the flowers and shells. that broke me. he was a science man to the death.

i have words for jopson but i will reserve them for ep 10.

francis gave a service for james but they did it alone. ok then! fuck me up some more! this, plus blankly's revelation that he's gonna die soon, chips at francis' state of zen and we see him break a bit. i love how his voice breaks in "why didnt you say aything?!" and then they're laughing and crying at the same time and yeah, there is no toxic masculity in this murderland, just a whole lot of love.

this show like oprah giving out prizes. "you get a monologue! and you get a monologue! and you get a monologue!" and i love it! hodgson and tover are relatively minor characters but they are given time to speak up, and despite their shitty actions, you can't help but empathize. and their breakdowns aren't the same either. goodsir breathes heavily, hodgson is still and haunted, tover hugs himself and shudders, and they all do it so well! how is everyone in this show so good?? jared did mention that most of the cast was theater-trained so i guess that played a part.

i have to tell you that before bingeing the last 3 eps i watched almost all the terror crack videos on youtube, so these last eps were, though still heartbreaking, were also a bit funny for me, in an absurd kind of way. when james fires the rocket, i can hear "rocketman" in the background. when goodsir mixes the poison, i almost yelled "chemistry time!". it's just... i needed to make fun of it or i wouldn't surive the heartbreak. which leads me to:

jopsoooooonnn! the best boi! the goodest boi! the most loyal boi who did no wrong! apart from his death, what's more heartbreaking is that he thought crozier left him. he didn't know that the captain was abducted so he thought he's been deliberately abandoned. his hallucination reduced me to tears. he was probably starving to death and here was all this food but no, he! just! wanted! his! captain! he sees the captain in his best form--well kempt, alert, emphatic--and at the end of it, his captain is turned away from him. fuck me up seven ways to sunday. i desperately want bts pics from this scene bc the eeriness of having a full dining table in the wastes must be jarring.

little doesn't get enough credit, because while he did mess up, his loyalty is also something to be admired. they were hungry and sick and dying--they could very well have just kept on south but he was still insistent to save francis. "you would leave our captain with that devil of a man?" yes, little, you did your best. you deserved to die last.

if tunbaaq is meant to be a metaphor for nature and balance, it's absolutely fitting how it's defeated by lead and chemical poison. ultimately, how we've used technology and industrialization kills the environment--or at least that's how i read it.

i really have to applaud adam nagaitis for his performance here and i do think he deserves top billing as much as the lead cast. by the end of it, he draws as much screen time as crozier and you can even say that he holds the last 2-3 eps together. and you genuinely fucking hate his character. were those really james' boots he was wearing? does that mean they dug him up and looted him? that unforgiveable swine, may he rot in hell, but gawwd adam pulled it off well.

i've been debating with myself if it was kinder and more poetic to have crozier die at the end so that he wouldn't have to grieve or go through survivor's guilt, but for my own mental health, i'm glad he survived. it's a small mercy but i'm glad he got to live. i'm glad he got to see what happened to his men, that he saw jopson one final time, and little too. his survival also sends the message that the one most willing to adapt (and respect the culture) will survive. he tries to follow silna but stops when the chief says "it's just how we do things". he understands and he lets it go. he learns the language and the way of life--and he lives.

i've watched featurettes and interviews for this series and from there you can really see that this show was a labor of love. it was a product of collaboration, research, open-mindedness, and a solid cast and crew. you can have all the special effects, all the expensive costumes, but at the core of it, what makes a good story is Dialogue. i can honestly say that it's one of the best scripts this decade has ever produced. the showrunners set out to tell a story and they did it to the best of their ability. i'll be coming back to this series for the next few months and rewatching it many times over.

Morning. 6am

I have not made an entry in so long, and i am safe to say that everything is going well. So well in fact that i dont know who i am anymore, to anyone else this would seem a bad thing, it would mean they are losing touch and all else. Yet for me it is a very good thing, i am losing the sides to me that held the devestation of rage and all that bares with it. It seems to be slipping away and i can only find one cause for that being true and that is the human. How could i possibly call him that after everything, Yeti, my love, my one and only escape. It seems strange to read the entries of so long ago of how filled i was with hatred to all as well as the boy. But now i find light in some things, this isnt a time i say i am a changed man however. I still have hard times, i still get upset. Yeti has done everything for me in order to change, yet he is doing it all so understandably, as if he knows. I feel more connected with him than i ever had. We are in love, he is now my fledgeling after mishaps in the twon Krul resided in and i turned him purely because i cannot trust him enough human to look after himself. He is sweet, innocent, child like, if it came to life or death i doubt he would know how to fight it. So i hope with my given vampirism to him he will use it as a blessing in its curse to get stronger in any way he can.

We, yeti and i, have gone reasonably well. There were upsets at first in that town and once things were settled enough for krul i left with the boy to some place better. I wokt jot down where however, but it is peaceful here, its just us up in a snow cabin perfectly snug and sound considering. And i say considering because there are small things i havent told him, things such as this journal. My other abilities, my work, my family, my dreams. Hell. Thats about everyhing, its as though yeti is living with a stranger. And he is to innocent to pry with questions since the moment i sound angered he begins to cry or close too, which i have come to not mind. In a way i am thankful that he cries so i can hold him and care. Care. Thats why i dont mind it, because i feel a strong gut urge to care for him and i know part to the reason is he is my fledgeling. So here we are and everything is perfectly well, so perfect in fact that i will not make another entry for the time, i need to spend it with him. So i wil make this last entry /for now/ somewhat decent enough to everything.

The urges to kill have subsided and work has been dull enough to not be heavily reminded as to who i am. I can now safely say that i do not have to worry for some demonic entity to arrive at the doorstep in order to drag me back for another shift. I havent explained wholey what i do and i believe this is the time for it since i will not regret it later due to yetis company. By the way he is asleep by the bed. I am merely an armchair away and using my ability in order to be as quiet as possible. It is quite hilarious seeing his reaction every time i appear with no noise or quick to get to other places.... but any who. I have a lot of business lines that i attend, i like to jumble it up. Nowadays they call me something of a workaholic, i dont think i remember a time before now that i hadnt spent a day without a business paper in hand. First i will start with more human of jobs, i own three fashion outlets, yes i know, how odd for an assasin. You may think so until you look to the stock markets and just how rising the fashion is becoming these days. Of course i dont sit home coming to designs each day tiresomely. I have many, many peoplein order to look after things without me. I simply own them and grow profits. This is the same case for four other lines to work, i manage military exports and imports for almoat every country, the ones that side to french and america, britian. In simpler terms i handle a lot of 'who gets what?' In human military reources. Yes, they are quite away i am a very old vampire, we have an agreement in contract that is beyond a simple paper script to lawyers and such. I cannot say exactly what i do, but that is a good general basis for you. Yes, i also do this with the aid of other very trusted and secreted members so i do not have to rarely lift a finger. How can i do that? Its the military. Governments are well aware of the higher authority to the devil and the fact i am his right hand man, so they also understand i am busy doing business of more importance. In honesty i do not want to handle their play things yet i do. Money.

Now for my last jobs, in total i have 13 organisations to run and mess about in. But the alst are my personal favourites hence to the reason why i left them to last and why the ones i have now explained i don't participate fully in. See i am an assassin of sorts although i dislike that title greatly. I am a mix of species that many people, wonce they find out i am murderous... well lets say they want my help also. So therefore i go about as a hit man, i am given a folder of heads with their location and i go and knock those heads off one by one. This is where i get most of my money since i enjoy it. Who wouldmt? ... mixed breed yes. My father is the king of Alfheimr and that means he is a white elf, the higher classed elves of pure royalty. Not my scene one bit. My mother however is a vampiric empress of pure blood. Not only that but she is a dark necromancer of the highest levels, even though ahe is petty as all hell. So that leaves me carrying all three traits unlike my brothers who stuck to the two. With this being said it meant childhood was nonexistent, i was paraded a rare species, one to be studied and concealed. My father was sure on it and was the reason for a lot of dark days in my past. Since he did not let me study my magic as mother pleaded because it would bring burdens to Alfheimrs pure elven crown. I was left to feel.. detached in a way. I have never once classed them as a family only by the relation to blood. Nothing more. It was because of my mixed kind that my father lay many tests onto me, i cannot count how many soecialists came to see me, to study me and research how on earth one of the genes didnt die off. It was pointless of course since they never came to a conclusion.

yeah the speed dating scene was pretty interesting. i really like in general how the face blindness is portrayed with the comical same faces. like something about that makes face blindness both understandable but subtly horrifying

1. We start with a general outline of what we want to see happen 2. eventually that goes down to what is really needed and my husband Sanders writes a 1st draft 3. I then read the draft and make changes-- rewrite scenes, take away, change dialog 4. we argue 5. and repeat till we are happy with it! 6. I start rough layouts/lettering/edit some more 7. (see step 4) 8. eventually everything falls into place and then we have a final edit pass 9. BOOM done.(edited)

The inspiration of the town is a mix of our experiences of small towns in Arizona and on the Navajo Rez. But also-- bc we like small towns

I based the town layout off of Holbrook Arizona more or less.

QUESTION 2. Not long after the mysterious body is found in the story, Agent Fink enters the scene and gets involved “off the books.” However, his motivations remain elusive. Why do you think Agent Fink is so intent on everything staying off the record? Is it personal or is this a professional risk? What do you think is the significance of the rock found with the body, and why does Agent Fink seemingly have more rocks? Do you think this mystery has something to do with Isaac? If so, how does Isaac factor in to both the mystery and Fink’s motivations? Lastly, what do you make of the dreams Fink has been having?

Catching up: I love so very many of the scenes, but the one that really hooked me was the coyote scene-- such a classic, beautifully executed mystery setup. And I loooved all that wildlife

Still catching up: One thing I think really works with the comic is the balance between quiet, slow images and faster moving dialogue: I love when the comic slows down to linger on images. One part that I kinda liked for that reason was with Yazzie visiting Nathaniel's house and looking at the rug on the wall, the lingering look at the rug really slowed the scene in the best way. Also when Fink is wandering through empty Rocket Ridge. Such a good way to build tension, improve pacing, and draw attention to the art. So good

and regarding question #2, I always get a feeling from this comic that things aren't quite what they seem in this story, so I'm very hesitant to barf up ideas about Fink's motives. I went through several sketches with Fink. I knew he was tall, slender, and had a dog... much like Tin Tin and that's sorta why he looks cartoony in the beginning I think... but as the story evolved, again, I just kept pushing he design to reflect that. He is supposed to resemble a bird with his hair a bit. Sort of like a crest.

QUESTION 3. Despite Rocket Ridge being a small town, the discovery of a body jumpstarts a lot of strange things. Do you think someone in the town had something to do with the body that was found? If so, who do you suspect (or have we not met them yet)? If not, do you think it has to do with the town supposedly having run-ins with the supernatural? In the most recent page we do see the supernatural, so do you think it has something to do with the body? In the background there is also Sheriff Logan, the man who discovered the body. Do you think Sheriff Logan will help or hinder Fink’s investigation into the situation? At the very least, do you think Logan will discover the real reason Fink is there? Of a last note, how do you think the comic’s events will affect Logan in general?

QUESTION 4. Besides the bigger mysteries, there is a lot of small town drama going on. At the game, we meet Emma Bloom who Dawn clearly doesn’t care for. What do you think the history is between them? Does it have something to do with Logan, or is it just between them? What significance might Emma have further along? Another noteworthy character when it comes to drama is Nathaniel. Why is Nathaniel trying to obtain a gun? Is it just for protection, due to his angst, or is something else going on? Do you think this will get him in trouble with Joseph who is keen on watching him? In respects to the larger plot, what does Nathaniel’s end of the story have to do with any of the other events going on? Are there any other dramas or characters you thought were intriguing?

‘Feud’ star says President Trump has created ‘great unity amongst women’

Shes the one Feud: Bette and Joan character whos largely fictitious but what she represents is truthful today as it was in the 1960s.

Pauline Jameson the capable assistant to What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? director Robert Aldrich who harbors ambitions to become a screenwriter and filmmaker herself is not to be confused with a British actress whose career was in full flourish around the same time as the series was set: they share only a name.

But as actress Alison Wright (The Americans, Sneaky Pete) reveals to Mashable, the character a composite of many smart, creative women working in Hollywood at the time represents an untold number of ladies hoping to shatter its many glass ceilings. Pauline herself may not be real, but the creative struggles depicted in her story were and in many ways still are as genuine as it gets.

Aside from what was on the page for you with this character, what did you need to know about her about women in similar positions as her, from that time period to wrap your head around what you wanted to do with your performance?

Wright: I had the good fortunate of Pauline being a composite character. Obviously, Ryan had a couple of guiding lines that he wanted her to be: book smart and cool as a cucumber was the character description. And that he wanted her to have a little feel of Eve Arden, and the ladies of that era and that sort of quirky personality.

So what I did was I started researching Bob Aldrich. We came up with the idea that Pauline had worked with Bob for quite a few years, and that she had worked on the previous project that he had done with Joan Crawford, Autumn Leaves. I came across a really great quote that Bob mentioned, a story that he was interested in telling, and the kind of characters that he was drawn to were characters that prevailed: characters that were struggling against the odds for their self-determination, for what they wanted their life to be. But no matter what the prevailing odds were, they didnt really concern themselves with those odds or focus on them, they just fought through and fought against them.

I thought that was a really great personality trait that would make sense for me to build Pauline around that. I obviously watched all of Joan and Bettes films, the ones that I hadnt seen yet. I read a couple of books about Bob Aldrich. I watched a ton of movies from a little bit earlier than that time, movies from more like the ’40s and ’50s, just because thats a time period that I really like, and something that I could take the opportunity to tip my hat to in my creation of Pauline, since I did have a little leeway.

That was probably where I started from and what my basis was for it. In terms of being a woman, I know how that goes.

Once you solidified your vision for her, what did she begin to mean to you as an individual character, and as a function in this bigger story thats being told?

I like the idea that its 1952 and she was somebody that had a broader scope for the picture of what she wanted her life to be than just being a mother and a wife. I like that shed somehow gotten the gumption in that time period to have those aspirations and dreams, and not really be bogged down with the difficulty of achieving them or how impossible it might seem or how the odds were all stacked against her. That is just what she wanted to do, and that she was going to try and do it.

Shes not in the victim corner, but she was quite proactive and had her head screwed on and sensible, and not living in a dream world. I think its very valuable for women to see characters like that on the screen reflected back at them. So I was very proud of that.

Of course, the election actually happened right in the middle of shooting episode 4. Literally, the day before the election happened was the time I was shooting a scene with Fred Molina as Bob Aldrich, and I was asking him, Would he read it? Would he read my script? Would he even consider producing it? He said that he would, and kind of laughed and joked a little bit at me. He said, Why are you so surprised that Im going to help you? Shes very able and competent. I had some sort of line like, Well, some men just dont like the idea of a woman in charge.

There was a certain sense of irony in the place in the storytelling, and the time in history that this was set, that I imagined once this was shot and people were watching it, that there would be a little bit of a tongue-in-cheek look back to how things were for women 50, 60 years ago.

Then of course, it turns out that its resonating on a much deeper level, because things are really just exactly the same and really havent changed that much. So it is very timely and important and had something to say. Its great as an artist when you get to be part of something thats more than entertainment.

Is was poignant to see these female characters from all different levels of Hollywood, from Mamacita to Pauline on up to a star of Joan Crawfords caliber, having to conspire together to achieve their dreams and ambitions. Has it changed significantly in your experience in Hollywood? Or is there still sort of a sisterhood alliance thats needed to push things forward?

I think its still needed, and I think we still need to cultivate it more and work on it more. I do think that given the current situation that were now in, women are empowering each other more, and trying to lift each other up more, because a divide and conquer will do just that. Theres not just room for one woman. Theres enough of the pie for everybody. Even for actresses.

When we get that through our head that were not all competing for this one top spot, theres just not just one of these places, there is enough for everybody. Then if we can understand that more, and band together, and lift each other up to support each other more, everybody wins.

I think its something that feels like its a movement thats happening now, in no small part thanks to the person that is the president now. I feel like weve had this great unity amongst women at the moment, in every walk of life. I hope it continues. We need more of it. We need more women to try and shake things up and make room for other women.

Were discriminated against as women for so many different things, in just the casual sexism and misogyny that we accept. Things like Throwing like a girl, all these expressions that we have. If we could all just take a second to actually point a finger at those things, and hold the mirror up, maybe they will change. I feel like were really at a moment in my lifetime where that stuff is very tangible, and hopefully pushing forward in changing things Im sure they said the same thing 40 years ago.

You clearly leaned into your research. What were the great takeaways of studying all those classic era films?

Theres no negative takeaway at all. Its fabulous entertainment. I dont know how many times I watched The Women, the original one the excellent one, not the dreadful remake. The one from 1939, I watched that over and over, just to get an idea. Even if it wasnt for Pauline, just the kind of women that Pauline would have to have been used to being around. Its very specific that she could hold her own against anybody, but she wasnt a wallflower. Shes got her own wit, and cheekiness about her.

I read a lot of their biographies too, I saw all of their interviews. I tried to read anything about any women that worked in the studio system and what it was like to have to shuttle between departments to try and work your way up. I read about what life was like in Hollywood in the ’20s, ’30s and ’40s.

Pauline obviously came from somewhere else. Shes not from Hollywood. And obviously Im foreigner, and I live in England. I got to read all about the development of California and Los Angeles, and the business itself as well. Theres no downside to any of that. Thats part of being an actor: the random pockets of knowledge that you get from all the stuff.

It came in really handy when Im doing it, because one day I was with Sarah Paulson and shooting her scene when shes Geraldine Page. She has a phone call with Joan Jessica couldnt be there she was away, so they asked me to step in and be Joan Crawford off camera for Sarah Paulson. So I got to do that, and luckily Ive been watching Joans movies nonstop. So I got to have fun, and sit on a toilet around the corner in the dark and do my best Joan Crawford impression to the bathroom walls all day long. So that was a really awesome moment too. Id like to think I was pretty good, but who knows?

Since Pauline is a composite character, if you could write her ending, what would you love to see happen for her in her ambitious Hollywood career?

As luck would have it, I by no means claim that I got to decide on anything about her, but since she was a composite character, there was a little discussion about what her story may end up being. Tim Minear had a few options, and we talked through them. We had the luxury of deciding what was going to be the most exciting for the end of her storyline.

I had my input, and they took it on board. They chose the ending that I wanted the most, Im sure because they wanted it the most too. But I did happen to have a little luxury to actually do that in this case, which is wild. So of course I want to be a great example for women, and of course wanted her to succeed, and not fail, and not be beaten.
