2022 Wrap Up: Nonfiction

I first challenged myself to "read more nonfiction" back in 2021, and it epically failed - so for 2022 I gave myself a concrete goal: one book every two months, or 6 for the year. And it worked! It actually went so well I'd already hit it by July, so I upped it to 10 - and surpassed even that. I'll be honest though, the only reason this is working at all is it's essentially an outgrowth of my podcast listening XD

The titles in bold italicized are my favorites/most enjoyable, and italicized are good and would recommend. I'd really like to sit down with Braiding Sweetgrass again myself, and Dark Archives would be a great read for spooky season (if books bound in human skin isn't too squeamish for you).

Did you have any nonfiction reads in 2022 you'd recommend?

They found him one day while on a gardening expedition. The little creature was all alone, seemingly abandoned.

Thus, as both very smart and logical people, they've decided to take him in, give him somewhere nice to sleep. They also decided it was best to give the small ant mole some nice clothes which Byakuya totally didn't stab himself several times with a needle in order to sew these little garments up.

And, once Makoto came back home after a nice visit with his sister, he was given quite the shock!

Don't worry! They all totally had the talk about how they now have a potential mythical creature on their hands.

Never posted this here so I thought I'd take a minute and do that now!

About a year ago while I was playing spiritfarer for the first time, I had the idea to make an OC which ended up being a self insert character of sorts! I really wanted to explore some of the different mechanics of spiritfarer characters as applied to something based off myself (like their spirit form, their associated flower, activities and events they do on the boat, etc) and how a character like that might add their own story into the larger narrative of the game, as well just what that story would even be. There's a lot of screenshot edits and drawing ideas I had that were never finished, but here's a few of the more completed pieces or concept stuff I did!

The thing about self inserts is that they get, well, personal at times. maybe even a little too personal. And considering the nature of the game, it was a really heavy topic to think about at points, so I ended up stopping work on the project after a while. (I also had a few issues when it came to screenshot editing since I could not find the right font used in the game ANYWHERE which definitely did contribute to me choosing to set it aside) But I still really like the work I did do and it is very special to me, so I'm hoping that one day I'll be able to come back to it! :)

Appreciation post for 'girly girl' characters and/or shows that celebrate traditionally feminine things that girls and women are shamed for.

Characters on this list that love makeup, fashion, hair, etc. Characters that are still written as strong, intelligent, brave, etc. That told young girls that these interests are valid, they are not lesser interests. Being feminine and liking traditionally feminine things does not make them weak.
