“I swear to God, Civ Pro is going to be the fucking death of me,” you groaned, tossing your highlighter on the table.
Civil Procedure was providing a rare extra-credit opportunity. You’d just finished covering pleadings, and Professor Hunt had provided materials to draft a complaint by November. He allowed groups of no more than six students to work together to write a complaint based on a hypothetical he provided, using assigned cases to determine the elements of the cause of action. Since you and Andy already had a study group made up of six people, it was only natural that the six of you worked on the complaint together.
But, goddammit, it felt your brain was about to ooze out of your ear or something.
“You said that about Torts yesterday,” Teddy teased.
“And Contracts the day before,” Billy added.
“Pretty sure you’ve said the same thing about Research after every, single, class,” Denny said.
“Hey, now, to be fair, Research is a snooze-fest,” Andy jumped in. “But let us not forget the hour-long rant about Property.”
“Hey, that class is a scam and you know it!” you said, pointing your finger at Andy. “All that woman does is read us the fucking cases we’re assigned. I might as well not even read before class! And you hardly have room to talk. You’ve already used all your skips because you couldn’t be bothered to show up!”
“Alright, alright,” Andy said, holding his hands up while sending you a wink, “clearly it’s time for a break.”
“Finally,” you said, leaning back in your seat and rubbing your face with your hands.
The others pushed their papers in front of them, signifying that they were momentarily giving up as well. They began to chat, but you couldn’t be bothered to listen. Your head was beginning to ache from spending the last hour trying to figure out the best way to format the complaint. You were ready to throw in the towel for the night a half hour ago, decide to come back to this later with a fresh mind. After all, you have over two months to work on it. But noooo, everyone else wanted to get it done fast.
Plus, the sooner you were done for the night, the sooner you could get away from Andy. It ate you alive to know that you liked him so much, that you would throw yourself out at him if given the chance, all while his heart belonged to someone else. Someone else, that he was going to marry.
But…did his heart really belong to someone else? If he loved his fiancée so much, why was he so…flirty with you?
“So, what about you?” Teddy asked.
It took you a moment to realize she was talking to you. “Huh, what? Sorry, I zoned out. What did you say?”
“We were just talking about our epic romances,” Teddy said. Billy laughed and Denny’s face turned red. For a moment, you wondered what embarrassing story you missed out on. Denny was notorious for his epic failures with women, and you could honestly use the opportunity to laugh. “So, you seeing anyone?”
“Been too busy to date,” you said. “By the time I’m done sobbing in my Torts casebook, I’m in no mood to be hit with cheesy one-liners by sleazy men in bars.”
“Well, hey, why don’t I set you up with one of my friends?” Teddy suggested. His name’s Frank. He’ll still hit you up with cheesy one-liners, but he’s super cute. And he just graduated, like, last May and is a professor of philosophy at Boston University.”
“Philosophy, sounds like a great way to get talked down to,” you laughed.
“Nah, Frank’s not like that. He’s a bit rough around the edges, sure, but that’s mostly because his mom’s super intense, but he’s a real good guy. I just know you’ll like him.”
You almost wanted to say no. And you almost did. But, you didn’t miss the way Andy went silent, the way his fists clenched, the moment that Teddy brought up your love life. A part of you wondered if that meant you had a chance. But, the more realistic side of you knew that Andy would never act on it unless he was pushed. And what better way to push him than to show him that you wouldn’t wait around?
“Oh, what the hell!” you said. “Give him my number, and tell him that I’m free Saturday if he wants to call and make plans.”
Andy’s eyes narrowed at you as Teddy cheered. While she continued to gush about Frank, he began to scribble at the top of his notes. When the others weren’t looking, he turned his notebook towards you.
Your eyes zeroed in on what he wrote at the top.
You’re playing with fire, sunshine.
And it should have scared you. Really, it should have. But, the little devil on your shoulder told you that you still had a shot, that he wasn’t unavailable until he was married. That you still had time. That ending an engagement was easier than ending a marriage.
So you smirked and sent him a wink. Game on.

“She lives!” Jensen declared, throwing his hands up in the air when he saw you standing in the doorway of his office.
“It’ll take more than a set of stairs to get rid of me,” you said. You couldn’t stop yourself from smiling when you looked at him. “Unfortunately, my brain decided to betray me and give me a concussion.”
“Stupid brain,” Jensen said. “I-I mean, not that you’re stupid. ‘Cause you’re not. You’re, like, amazingly brilliant. They should honestly study your brain when you die. I mean, if you want to donate your body to science! And, obviously…You know what, I should probably shut up.”
You giggled, shaking your head. “Don’t worry about it. It’s kinda cute to see you ramble like that.”
“Cute, I can handle cute,” Jensen mumbled to himself before saying louder to you, “So, teach, what brings you to my office?”
You smiled at Jensen, holding up your laptop as you said, “Had a question for the tech genius.”
His chest puffed out at your compliment, a smile overtaking his face. “Yeah? What’s that?”
“I was wondering if there was a way to block someone on email?” you asked, chewing on your bottom lip. “I tried Googling it, but staring at the screen made my head hurt and trying to read made my head hurt worse and, honestly, I’m not entirely sure if I even managed to Google the right thing.”
“Yeah, sure, it’s easy peasy!” Jensen said, holding out a hand to take your laptop from you. You passed it to him, telling him your password so he could get in. “So, what, you sick of spam emails or something?”
“I wish it were that simple. This guy, he’s been emailing me and it’s just easier to block him than deal with it another way. The last email he sent’s already pulled up, so you can see what his email address his.”
Except it wasn’t. And, really, you knew it wasn’t. Andy Barber wouldn’t just disappear from your life because you blocked his email address. He would find a way. He always did. You considered yourself lucky that he had left you alone for so long now. But he was back, and you knew he wasn’t going to let you go again so easily.
“Okay, and he’s blocked.” Jensen’s brows furrowed together. “Wait, a guy? Is everything okay? Because if it isn’t, I can do more than just block his email for you.”
You almost wanted to laugh. Sure, Jensen was built well. His short-sleeve button-downs did little to hide his bulging biceps. And you’d heard from one of the other professors that she’d seen him working out, shirtless, at the rec center and she found out he’d been hiding what she could only describe as “the most beautiful Adonis belt and six-pack she’d ever seen”. But Jensen was also a nerd, and you weren’t sure if you could trust that he’d throw a punch if need be.
And yet, the sincerity in his voice almost made you buckle at the knees.
“Just some crazy ex.” The lie shouldn’t have felt as natural as it did. Then again, everything you and Andy did…The only thing that was a lie was that there was never an official title on it. “I guess he just googled me and all he could find was my information on the faculty directory.”
Jensen raised his brows. “What? No social media?”
“Was always freaked out about it. Heard too many horror stories about stalkers and didn’t want to become an unwitting victim. Though, I did download Facebook for, like a day, and determined that I definitely wasn’t missing out on anything.”
“He’s an idiot,” Jensen said. “Your ex, I mean. Stalking a lady isn’t the way to win her heart.”
You couldn’t stop yourself from asking, “And how would you? Win a lady’s heart, I mean?”
A soft smile curled across his face. “Well, you just gotta stick around to find out, teach.”

Song: “You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman” by Aretha Franklin
~*~*~*~
“So, I’m guessing I won’t be seeing you for a few weeks?” Rafael stirred the salsa that was simmering on the stove as Anna sat on the other side of the breakfast bar, hunched over a book.
She barely looked up. “Maybe.”
He smiled. “Well, your exams are coming up, aren’t they?”
“Mmhmm,” she mumbled absently.
“I guess I’m going to have to hang out with Carisi to fill the time.”
She turned the page. “Fine by me.”
He was entertained by this little game. “And then I’ll do a striptease across the squad room.”
“That’s good.” Then, as if she had snapped out of a trance, her head jerked up. “Wait—what did you say?”
He laughed and checked the beans, which were almost ready to mash. “I see how it is. You ignore me until you hear the word striptease. Then I have your attention.”
She rubbed her eyes with the heels of her hands. “I’m sorry. I was just—”
He smirked. “More interested in the Rule Against Perpetuities than in me?” He walked around the counter to stand behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist. “It’s okay. It has that mysterious and sexy vibe.” He pulled her sweatshirt—well, actually, his sweatshirt—aside and nuzzled against her neck.
“You keep doing that and it won’t get any less mysterious to me,” she whimpered, reaching her hand up and around her head to caress the back of his head. “Or I’ll just get turned on in the middle of the exam.”
“Nobody understands that rule.” He gave her a quick nip on her earlobe but released her from his grip and went back to the food. “In some states, you can’t actually be sued for using it wrong.”
“I wish that applied to civil procedure, too. I will never understand Pennoyer.”
He cracked two eggs into a skillet that had once held tortillas. “More stuff you will never use. I do, however, expect you to get a perfect score on your criminal law exam.”
“What happens if I disappoint you?”
He glanced up at her and saw that her face had fallen just slightly. Despite her notoriously great poker face, the longer he was with her, the more he was able to read her micro expressions. “Mi corazón, I was kidding.” He tilted the pan to redistribute the oil and then went back to the beans. “You could never disappoint me.”
She sighed. “I’m worried I’m going to disappoint myself.”
“How?”
“I worked really hard to get into school. And I’ve worked really hard all semester to keep up with the work. It’s a lot harder than I thought it would be.”
“Si, pero you’ve come this far. Exams are just regurgitation of what you’ve been discussing all semester,” he replied. “I promise, the hard stuff is what you do in class. And if it makes you feel any better, how you do in law school—or even on the bar exam—doesn’t tell you how you’ll be as a lawyer.”
She brightened a bit. “Really?”
“Yeah, I mean, look at Carisi—”
“Raf, you know that’s not nice!” she scolded. “Sonny is a perfectly fine attorney.”
He finished plating their dinner. “Sorry. I’m just saying that some of the best attorneys I know were only average in school. It doesn’t mean anything.”
She raised an eyebrow. “Oh yeah? And how did you do in law school?” It was a rhetorical question. She knew perfectly well how he’d done.
He pushed a plate across the counter from her and sat down next to her with his own. This was where they usually ate together; the dining room table had other uses. “Don’t compare yourself with me, Anna. Don’t compare yourself with anyone. You deserve to be a lawyer more than anyone else I know. And I will be as proud of you the day you take that oath as I am right now just for working as hard as you are.”
“Are you sure you won’t be disappointed if I—”
He set his fork down and took her hands in his. “The only way you could disappoint me, Anna, is if you’re so worried about the lawyer you’ll be that you forget about being the woman you are.”
She dipped her head for a second and then kissed him. “Thank you. I needed to hear that.” She took a bite of the huevos rancheros he had prepared and sighed. “Jesus, this is delicious. Is there anything you’re not good at?”
He thought for a second. “Stripping?”
When she threw her head back and laughed, he knew he had broken through the wall of negligence and consideration, theories and rules. After her shower, he caught her singing along to Disney soundtracks in the bedroom as she blow-dried her hair. When she saw him watching her, she motioned for him to join her one-woman concert, creating the perfect harmony. And for the rest of the night, Anna was his Anna again, and there was no way he could ever be disappointed with that.
***
The day grades were posted on the school’s intranet, Anna had to wait all day to check them because she wanted Rafael to be with her when she did. And of course, that had to be the day he got home late; a trial had run over and then he had to meet with the squad regarding a new case that had just come in. By the time he arrived at her apartment, she was clawing the walls. When they finally sat down to look, she couldn’t do it—she made him open up the website and look for her while she paced between the couch and her kitchen counter.
“Well?” she asked, impatiently.
His face betrayed nothing. He took a deep breath and looked up at her from behind her laptop screen. “Do you want the bad news or the good news first?”
Her heart fell into her stomach. This was torture. She prepared to hear that she had done poorly enough that she wouldn’t be able to return for the next semester. “Just get the bad news over with, I guess.”
“Well,” he continued, “you’re probably going to want to get very drunk.”
“Oh God,” she said, walking to her liquor cabinet. “Do I want wine or scotch?”
His face started to twitch. “Don’t you want the good news?”
She turned back. “Oh. Well, I guess that couldn’t hurt. What’s the good news?”
He stood up. “The good news is that you’re going to want to get very drunk celebrating with a bunch of people, because, mi corazón, your GPA is a 3.0.”
Her ears filled with the sound of her own heartbeat. She wasn’t even sure she had heard him correctly. “I’m sorry, did you say—”
A wide grin stretched across his face. “I did!” He threw his arms around her waist and spun her around. “You did so well, Anna! I’m so proud of you.”
But her face was not what he had expected it would be. She didn’t look as happy as he thought she would have. Although she was smiling, it wasn’t the genuine smile he loved so much. She pulled herself out of his arms and sat on the couch to examine the grades more closely. She had an A in criminal law—no surprise there—and another in torts. But civil procedure and property had been her downfall: she’d only managed to pull C’s in those two classes. Her eyebrows pinched together. What happened? she wondered.
Rafael, however, seemed thrilled with her work, and she didn’t want to dampen his mood with her own. She would have plenty of time to analyze what had gone wrong when she was alone. So she put on the happiest face she could muster and stood up to face him again.
“Thank you, honey,” she said. “I appreciate how supportive you’ve been all this time.”
He smiled at her and tilted his head. “Are you all right? You seem a bit—”
“Oh, no, I’m fine!” she said, a little too emphatically. “It’s just kind of one of those adrenaline things. You know, anticipation and then…”
He squinted at her just a bit and took her hands. “I love you. We should go celebrate.”
She shook her head. “Oh, Raf, I’m not—I mean, it’s late, and I’m kind of tired. Stressful day, you know? Can we just—”
“Chinese?” he offered. “You may even be able to convince me to watch the new version of Beauty and the Beast.”
“Sure.”
“Are you sure you’re all right?”
She kissed him on the cheek. “I’m fine, Raf. Really.” Then she went into the kitchen to find the menu for their favorite Chinese place down the street, leaving a trail of lies in her wake.
***
A week later, just before Christmas, Rafael had a surprise for Anna. Between his work schedule and a two-day migraine she’d had, they hadn’t had time to celebrate properly. Getting the squad together was like herding cats, but he had managed to do it. He organized a small get-together at Forlini’s with them, plus a couple of Anna’s friends, to celebrate the successful end of Anna’s first semester of law school. The night of the party, he arranged for the two of them to Uber from his apartment to the restaurant, as if it were just another date night. Anna didn’t ask too many questions, although she was surprised that he suggested Forlini’s, as it was where he usually went to drown his sorrows after a tough loss.
“I’d like to start associating this place with good things,” he said to her as they exited the car.
“Gotcha. I’m kind of excited to go here, to be honest. Maybe I’ll start feeling like I might actually become a lawyer someday.”
Over the last week, Anna had made a few offhanded comments like that, and it concerned him slightly. Ever since grades came out, she hadn’t quite been herself. He assumed it was the migraine and also the post-exam comedown, but something seemed a bit off. He tried to put the thought out of his mind; he wanted tonight to be all about her and her success. After all, they had celebrated enough of his victories.
“Surprise!”
To Anna’s utter and complete shock, she entered the main dining room to find Olivia, Fin, Sonny, Amanda, and three of her friends gathered around a long table, cheering and shouting congratulations. She had no idea how to react at first—she hadn’t been expecting this at all.
“Holy sh—what are you all—”
Sonny came around the table to high-five her. “Rafael thought it would be a good idea to celebrate. He said you did really great your first semester!”
“Yeah, a 3.0? That’s better than I ever did, even in high school,” Fin added.
“No shock there,” Amanda said, elbowing him playfully. He gave her a faux glare.
As everyone else around the table offered their congratulations, Anna was aghast. She had no idea how to react to this. She knew that everyone gathered around this table was there to celebrate her, and that they all genuinely believed she’d done well. But all week, she had been turning the semester over in her head, trying to figure out how she had done so poorly in civ pro and property, and how she could have done better in her other classes. As soon as she got back to school, she planned to ask for copies of her essays, after which she would spend a great deal of time reviewing them and making notes on what she had missed. For now, though, she didn’t want to disappoint all these people who had made time out of their busy schedules to come together on her account. So she plastered a smile on her face and thanked each of them individually before they all sat down to dinner.
All through dinner, Rafael barely stopped touching her. He would squeeze her leg under the table or hold her hand while they waited for their next course. They made small talk with her friends, who would later tell Anna that they couldn’t believe he was as old as he was because he was so handsome, and, of course, they asked all about how she was liking law school. She gave the appropriate answers, told them what she knew they wanted to hear. After a while, though, she knew her façade was starting to falter, so she excused herself to the bar to get another glass of wine.
“I’ll go with you,” Amanda said, signaling to her empty glass. “If I’m paying a sitter, I might as well live it up.” While they were waiting for their drinks, Amanda glanced backward at the table. Rafael was sitting at the end of the table facing the bar, and although there was conversation going on all around him, his eyes were focused on Anna. He was clearly trying to be subtle; his eyes occasionally darted back to someone else’s face, and he would take a sip of his scotch. But inevitably, his bright green gaze would land back on his girlfriend, like he was worried that if he looked away too long, she would disappear. “He stares at you every time you look away,” she finally said.
“Excuse me?”
Amanda smiled and leaned toward Anna, lowering her voice conspiratorially. “If you looked over your shoulder right now, you’d see it. He’s so proud of you. And Barba is never proud of anyone. He barely said congratulations to Carisi when he passed the damn bar exam.”
“I don’t know why,” Anna said sadly.
“Because he thinks Carisi is enough of a puppy dog and doesn’t need any more encouragement.”
“No, that’s not what I meant. I mean, I don’t know why he’s proud of me. I didn’t do as well as I’d hoped.”
Amanda played with her empty glass. “A 3.0 is pretty damn good if you ask me.”
“I’m dating Rafael Magna-Cum-Laude-At-Harvard-Law-School Barba,” Anna said. “The guy who started as a poor kid in the Bronx and moved up to be—well, look at him.” She gestured to Rafael, in his three-piece suit, now debating the latest gun control measure in the state legislature with Sonny. “How the hell do I live up to that?”
Amanda set her glass on the counter. “Does he make you feel like you have to live up to something? Because that’s not what that stare says to me.”
Anna didn’t say anything for a long while, and then she looked at the usually cynical blonde. “So, detective, what does that stare say to you, then?”
“Look, I’m no romantic,” Amanda began, “but I’ve known Barba for years now, and I can tell you right now that I have never seen him look at anyone the way he looks at you—especially when he knows you’re not looking. It’s like a compulsion or something.”
Anna felt a flush wash over her skin. Suddenly, she was very aware of the pair of eyes on her from across the room. It wasn’t creepy; on the contrary, he looked at her the way she always hoped someone would look at her. But she still couldn’t shake the idea that she hadn’t earned that look, that she had somehow failed to live up to what Rafael Barba deserved in a partner.
Just then, their drinks appeared on the bar. “Thank you, Amanda,” she said, bracing herself for round two.
“No problem. And for what it’s worth? Carisi only got a 2.9 his first semester.”
***
“Did you have fun?” Rafael asked as he shut her apartment door behind them.
Anna stepped out of her painfully high heels, suddenly becoming shorter than him again. “Yeah. I’m just surprised you were able to get everyone together!”
He loosened his tie. “It wasn’t easy, believe me. Not that they didn’t want to come, but, you know, kids, grandkids, that kind of thing. You should be very aware of how much they care about you.”
“You mean how much they care about you,” she muttered, heading to the kitchen for a glass of water.
“What does that mean?”
“What are you, a bat?”
“Don’t deflect. What’s wrong, Anna? Something’s been off all week, and I can’t figure out what. Did I do something wrong?”
“No,” she said, a hint of sadness in her voice. “That’s the problem.”
“Well, now I’m very confused.” He took her by the hand and led her into the living room, pulling her onto the couch with him. “Sit. Breathe. Explain.”
She sighed deeply. “It’s not easy being your girlfriend sometimes, you know.”
He laughed a little. “I could have told you that months ago. In fact, I think I did tell you that.”
She shook her head. “No, it’s not—it’s not that you’re doing something wrong. You’re easy to be with, actually—a lot easier than you think you are.”
“That’s an argument for another day. What’s not easy, then?”
She tried to look away, but he turned her head back gently. “Do you remember when we were just barely together, and you asked me why I chose you?”
He nodded. “That was the first time you said you loved me. How could I forget that?”
She gave him a sad smile. “Well, as easy as it seemed for me to say that, it wasn’t.”
“Why not?”
“Because,” she replied, “I had the same question for you.”
It was his turn to be aghast. His eyes widened and he took her hands in his. “Why in the world would you have to question that? If anyone should be insecure, it’s me. But I know you love me. So why do you doubt that I love you?”
“It’s not that I doubt that you love me, Raf. It’s that I don’t know why. And last week just made it worse.”
His brow furrowed in confusion. “What happened last week that would make you wonder—” He stopped. “Oh, Amor, you don’t mean your grades.”
A tear fell from her eye and she tore one of her hands away from his to wipe it away. “I told you I was afraid of disappointing you, and myself. My grades were—well—not what I expected.”
“Mi amor, it is so common for your first semester of law school to be imperfect. And you did remarkably well, especially considering you also have a job.”
“You did remarkably well. I’m just…average. And when I look at you, when I see you in court, when you sit there and debate gun control with Sonny, it becomes all the more apparent to me that you could do so much better, and—”
“Anna, listen to me. There is nothing better than you. I could look for it and I wouldn’t find it because it doesn’t exist. You could work at McDonald’s for all I care. You are not your career. I know I make it seem like that’s a lifestyle, but if you haven’t noticed, I’m not the most well-adjusted person.” He gave her a small smile, trying to make her laugh, but she didn’t.
“I just wanted to make you proud of me.”
“I’m proud of you every day. Why do you think I can’t stop touching you when we’re out? It’s not that I’m trying to tell the world that you’re mine.”
She wiped another tear away. “No? Then what is it?”
“It’s that I want everyone to know that I’m yours,” he said. “I want people to know that you chose me. I told you, Anna. The only way you could ever disappoint me is by forgetting who you are in favor of what you’re becoming. And you shouldn’t be disappointed in yourself, either. What you’ve accomplished in the last two years is nothing short of amazing, and if I have to tell you that every day, I will, until you believe me.”
She looked up into his now-watery eyes, and in that moment, she was so grateful for having a partner who was just that—her partner. He never made her feel silly for having feelings or that she had to be something more than what she was. And then she thought about what Amanda had said about him staring at her, and suddenly she realized that her insecurity wasn’t coming from him. It was only coming from inside her head.
To his great relief, she finally broke into a smile. “You know what really would make me feel better?”
“What’s that?” he asked.
“Seeing if you really are good at stripping.”

AN: It’s Galileo day and I am beyond excited. Couldn’t sleep so I put the muse to work. CW: language, sex, def NSFW. References: The Undiscovered Country, S.19,E.13
Reader x Rafael. CW: language, sex, you know the drill. It’s Barba’s first day as a professor of law. Reader pays a visit!
***
Rafael dusted the chalk off that rubbed onto his vest. Rolling back his sleeves, he took a step back and looked at his scribbles on the board. Today was a new day for him. After leaving the D.A.’s office after being acquitted from the Householder case, Rafael took much needed time off to reconvene and figure out his priorities.
But Rafael wasn’t meant to be a homebody. He was growing increasingly bored and irritated at home.
It was only at your prodding that he interviewed for the professor opening at New York University.
***
“Rafael,” you said your boyfriend’s name firmly. “I love you but wasting away here at home. You have got to get back out there.”
“No one will hire me. I was acquitted formally but everyone will just think I am a baby killer,” Rafael protested, irritated. He scratched his 5 o’clock shadow and took a large gulp of his scotch. He sat down at the table in the apartment you two shared. Smells of roast chicken and yellow plantains mixed in the air.
You began to slice some tomatoes for the salad you were preparing. You picked up the slivered fruit and tossed them in the bowl with rest of the vegetables and wiped your hands on your apron. You turned to Rafael and placed your hands on your hips.
“Rafael, you live in a place that the men who wrote the law don’t even think about. You’re not a class A felon. This is not your Achilles heel. Just go - go for the interview. Who knows what will happen,” you reasoned. Rafael looked at you intently. You met his stare and cocked your brow, your lips pursed.
Rafael gave an exasperated sigh and threw his hands up. “Fine cariño. I’ll apply.”
“You have to get back out there love. You can’t stay inside forever. It’s not you,” you replied bringing the salad over to the table. You bent down and kissed Rafael softly.
Rafael pulled you into his lap and nuzzled your neck, breathing in your scent. “What did I ever do to deserve you?”
****
Rafael’s phone buzzed loudly against the wooden desk, shaking him out of his reverie and back to reality. He saw that it was you and he answered it eagerly.
“¿Chula, que tal?” Rafael greeted you. “Can’t wait to see you later. I made dinner reservations.”
You sighed on the other line, knowing you were about to disappoint him. “Rafi, bad news. The deposition took forever and I missed my flight. I won’t be home until tomorrow morning.”
Rafael sighed, disappointed. “Okay.”
“I just wanted to wish you good luck on your first day. You’re going to do great Professor Barba. Love you.”
“Love you too,” Rafael replied. “Be safe. Call me before you take off.”
You promised you would and you hung up. You looked at the building in front of you, and smiled entering. After speaking with security, you made your way to the lecture hall that Rafael was teaching at.
Through the glass partition, you saw Rafael’s back was to you, so you quietly opened the door and sat in the first empty seat you saw in the back row. Taking the baseball cap from your bag, you slid it on and lowered the brim so that he couldn’t see your face.
“Welcome to Torts. I’m Professor Barba. There are few ground rules...”
You smiled as Rafael went through the ins and outs of the class and his expectations.
“Tort law is the area of law that protects people from bad acts of others. When someone acts in an unreasonably dangerous way, it is called a tortious act. However, tort law is not criminal law. Tort law gives a victim a civil remedy in the courts. The four elements to every successful tort case are: duty, breach of duty, causation and injury,” Rafael continued, his voice booming, filling the hall.
You smiled and discreetly looked around, seeing all the students transfixed on Rafael. You knew he’d be perfect - he had an audience in the courtroom- and now he had one right here.
“The four conditions must be met, each are necessary. None in itself is sufficient. There must be a duty or an obligation. This duty must have been breached. The breach must have a caused...” Rafael continued.
Ninety minutes later, Rafael ended his class, giving instructions on what readings to complete prior to the next class and hinting about a possible quiz in the immediate future.
As the class slowly emptied out, Rafael noticed you in the back, your head still bent.
“Can I help you? I have office hours this afternoon, but another class will be here in about thirty minutes,” Rafael called out you, as he packed up his briefcase.
You looked up, and removed your cap, revealing yourself. “Oh, I think I will need so much help, Professor.”
Rafael was surprised and he gave you a toothy grin. “Y/N - what are you doing here? I thought you had missed a flight.”
“I’m a lawyer darling. I know how to lie,” you teased as you negotiated the stairs and approached him. You pressed your hands against his chest and kissed Rafael.
Rafael returned your kiss and cupped your chin, tilting your face more towards him. You broke the kiss and hopped onto his desk. “You know,” you began, running a finger down the neckline of your blouse, “I never had a professor who looked as good as you.”
Rafael eyed your cleavage and smirked. “No?”
You shook your head. “No... your students are very lucky. I bet your office hours will be packed with students who just cannot seem to focus. They’ll need extra time with their sexy professor.” You began unbuttoning your blouse. Rafael swallowed hard, and ran a hand through his dark hair.
“Cariño,” Rafael warned, his eyes darting to see if anyone was around.
“What?” You asked innocently, batting your lashes, letting your shirt hang open to reveal your lace encased breasts.
“Y/N! It’s my first day!” Rafael hissed. “We can play at home.”
You rolled your eyes and hopped off the desk, turning to show off your derrière. “Oh come on Professor Barba,” you continued to goat. “I bet all of your students will be fantasizing about getting under you. I know if you were mine, it would be all that I could think about.”
Rafael swallowed hard. He could feel his cock twitch as he took in your form. ‘It would be so easy,’ he thought - to just take you where you were. He would just flip up your skirt and unzip his fly... he just knew how wet you were and how easily your pussy would welcome his cock.
“Okay y/n, but we make it quick,” Rafael agreed. Before you could react, Rafael was on you, like a hyena capturing a wildebeest. Rafael spun you around and kissed you hard. Your tongue tangled with his. Rafael tasted like coffee, mint, and something that was uniquely him. You moaned softly as Rafael suckled on your sweet spot. He nipped your neck and you hissed in pleasure. His tongue snaked out to soothe the hickey he left and you groaned again. Your panties were soaking already - you were so turned on and the two of you had just started.
Reaching to your thighs, you shimmied your skirt up and then reached down to pull down your panties to mid-thigh. Rafael copped a feel and he growled at how wet you already were. You writhed against his hand, trying to increase pressure or get him to finger fuck you. Rafael took the hint and slipped one digit inside of you. Your hips bucked automatically to Rafael’s ministrations. You head fell forward, as Rafael thrusted his finger in and out of you in a languid pace. Rafael used his other large hand to undo the fly of his pants and released his aching, weeping cock. Rafael slipped his finger out and you whined at the lost sensation.
Your whines were replaced with moans as you felt the head of Rafael’s cock at your entrance. You lowered yourself further into the desk and braved yourself. Rafael spread your legs a bit further- or as further as they could go with your underwear still at your thighs. “You’re so fucking beautiful,” he murmured as he took in the sight of your naked ass. Teasingly he ran his cock up and down your slit before entering you. The two of you groaned at the sensation. “Remember, gotta be quick,” Rafael groaned. You nodded. “I...I know,” you choked out.
Rafael began thrusting in and out of you quickly. Each snap of his hip propelled you forward. You met his thrusts eagerly and the sounds of furious fucking filled the lecture hall, echoing off the empty room. Rafael reached down to rub your swollen clit and you choked back a sob as pleasure coursed your body.
“I am so close,” you panted. “Give it to me. I want it.”
“Take it y/n,” Rafael growled in response. “Take that cock.”
Rafael’s filthy words were your undoing and you came around his cock, his name on your lips. Rafael followed soon thereafter, his hips stiffening as he emptied his load into you. Rafael chanted your name as if it were a prayer.
The two of you stayed intimately connected for a minute before Rafael slipped out of you. As he tucked himself back into his pants, you reached down to pull up your panties and slip down your skirt. You could feel Rafael’s cum drip out of you and pool in your panties, and out the sides, to your thighs. You felt erotically charged.
“Well, safe to say you’re having a great first day,” you teased pressing a chaste kiss against his lips. Rafael wrapped his arms around you, and returned the kiss.
“That I am. But I have to return to my office and get ready for my next class. I’ll see you tonight, definitely dinner.”
You nodded, pulling away to grab your belongings. As you headed to the stairs, you looked back at Rafael. “Hey Professor Barba?”
Rafael looked at you, a flicker of lust in his eyes. “Yes?”
“I think I’ll drop by during office hours. Make sure your door lock works,” you winked.
“You’re incorrigible!” Rafael teased watching you bound up the stairs.
“But you love it,” you called back before exiting.
“That I do,” Rafael murmured as he gathered the rest of his stuff. “That I do.”

well, today was fine. not exciting, but there are gonna be a lot of those now that I’m officially immersed in bar studying as a full time thing. I set an alarm for 1:15 pm because I didn’t want to sleep in too much, so I got up when that went off. I made eggs for breakfast because I feel like I’ve been living off sugar and carbs lately (I say this as I’m snacking on “cinnamon toast crunch blasted” shredded wheat, which is entirely sugar and carbs) so maybe I should vary that a bit. By 2 I started my first bar video, which was 3 1/2 hours, and basically finishing what we were doing yesterday by going through each of the 7 subjects tested on the MBE (multi-state bar exam), being torts, con law, contracts, property, criminal law and procedure (which is two different classes but treated as one subject), civil procedure, and evidence. So we did 5 practice questions for each and then went over them. So that was the first video, which I finished around 5:30. I took like ten minutes to get some food, then started the next one, which consisted of a “mini-test” which had two questions for each of the 7 subjects we’d reviewed in a random order like it would be on the actual bar, and then we went over those, so nothing too mind blowing, just a long time commitment and having to stay engaged. There are a handful of other bar tested electives like secured transactions and wills & trusts, but those are on a different part of the exam. While going through the second video, Jess and I started to scheme about going to eternal con in a few weeks, which is conveniently located on Long Island, where my family is, so we could stay with them, and it turns out Frontier Airlines finally unrolled their direct flights from O’Hare to the LI airport that they told my parents they were going to do like two years ago and they’ve been bugging me about it ever since, lol. They are currently the only airline that has a direct flight from Chi into the LI airport and not the city, which is a big deal for my parents because they really loathe picking me up from Laguardia (like, a lot) so I knew flying into Islip would be a lot easier. Once the bar review video was over I called my dad and talked it over, then made the arrangements, so we are good to go! I’m super excited because I haven’t been at a con since HVFF Chicago, and by the time I’ll get to this one it will have been like 2 months, lol, which is way too long considering the rate at which we’d been going before conpocalypse weekend right before everyone got super busy with life stuff. I’m trying to figure out if we might run into anybody I know, there are a couple people from LI that I know do cosplay, so we may run into them. I’ll have to figure out what I’m doing cosplay wise. But yeah, I’m excited about that. I also talked to him about the bar and future plans and all that good stuff, I still haven’t heard back on the email I sent the NY job, so if I don’t get anything tomorrow I’m gonna go ahead and call them. I’m feeling more and more like this isn’t going to happen based on how I haven’t heard a peep from them yet, not even like a “hey we’re still deciding but we’ll get back to you” it’s just been nothing, and I don’t know how I feel about that. I mean, I’m pumped about potentially staying in Chicago, which is objectively the better option at this point  job wise, but the idea of really not having a job lined up makes me anxious, even though I know a lot of people don’t get hired until after they take the bar. just gotta keep applying....I need to spend some time looking for jobs and applying soon, the bar studying schedule is just really intense, they have stuff scheduled for every day, including weekends, so that’s gonna be a lot when I do have weekend obligations I need to do, so I’ll have to figure all of that out. We’ll see what happens, hopefully by tomorrow I’ll at least know if I’m going to get an answer. After the phone call I watched one episode of 13 Reasons Why, which the only comment on I’ll make is that in reality the entirety of Clay’s mom’s firm would’ve been conflicted off the case, not just his mom, because if they attempted to screen her off and establish a “chinese wall” (that’s the term they use to describe it when you cut one lawyer off from any info in a case, I have no idea why) they clearly have broken it on multiple occasions and the courts don’t play with that shit, so they’d be long gone at this point. That and I have to reiterate my assertion that there is no way in hell the school would ever have gone to trial, even if all their offers got rejected, and they especially would not be making the arguments they’re making in court because they would be getting absolutely crucified by the media and it would look really, really bad for them. Anyway. The fact that the Krypton season finale was on tonight and there were people tweeting about it on my feed reminded me that I haven’t watched last week’s episode (and I won’t be able to watch the finale until tomorrow because I don’t get stupid Syfy) so I then switched over to that. Interesting developments, the most of which I’d credit to the Zod family, finding out Drew Zod is actually Seg’s son as well as Lyta’s was quite the revelation, being that it means him and Jor-El are actually brothers (who end up being sworn enemies). So I guess we’ll see how that plays out in the finale. After that I watched a few episodes of 30 Rock while I tried to wind things down on the computer (and by that I mean reading all the articles and buzzfeed posts I’d pulled up) before starting to get ready for bed, and now I’m here. Good stuff. PT tomorrow, then more bar prep of course. Such an exciting life I lead, I know. I’ll take it though, because boring right now means excitement later, and that’s where I want to end up being. Alright, I’m done for now. Goodnight huns. Sleep well.

Camila has never really appreciated why windows in tall buildings are always sealed. Like, maybe she just wants to crack a window open every once in a while, get some fresh air or something.
Well, she never appreciated sealed windows until now that is. Right now, she’s two seconds away from jumping out of their seventh floor research lab and she honestly, probably would have, had the windows not been sealed. So she has whoever invented sealed windows to thank for saving her life.
It’s almost nine at night and she’s still at the lab running this stupid experiment. She’s been working since eight in the morning and she’s exhausted. Camila is spending her gap year between graduating college and matriculating into medical school working in a research laboratory in Columbia University. She’d already gotten accepted to a few schools, but her heart is pretty much set on Columbia. It’s where she went to college and has spent the last three years getting involved in their neurology department’s research on neurodegenerative diseases, so she really can’t think of anywhere else she’d rather go.
Camila has also fallen in love with New York so that all but seals the deal. Right now, however, she’s anything but pleased about working in this lab. Their lab is getting ready to submit a grant proposal and so everyone is working hard to generate as much clear and concrete data for their preliminary results. This means late nights and early mornings in the lab and Camila just misses her bed and her cat and now the centrifuge machine isn’t working.
She was on her last run on this dumb centrifuge when it just stopped working. She’s called some people that work in the same lab and they advised that she turn it off and wait another 30 minutes?! and just try again, so that’s what she’s doing: waiting and contemplating about jumping out the window.
–
Lauren is mopping the floor on the seventh floor of Columbia’s Center for Neurological Research lab while trying to read her notes for her Torts class the next morning. She took a full-time job as a custodian in the building because it’s the only full-time job she could secure while still attending law school. As a first year J.D. student at Columbia, there isn’t much flexibility in her schedule. Her parents cut her off right before she started undergrad when she came out to them, so she’s been fending for herself for a while. A full ride to Columbia for pre-law meant she was able to work and save money to be able to continue living in New York and attend law school. Student loans is covering the rest of her tuition.
Lauren doesn’t care much about spending the rest of her life paying off student loans if she can have her dream career. She’d wanted to be a lawyer since she can remember hanging out in her dad’s office at the age of six, marveling at how her dad worked tirelessly for other people. She’s sad that her hero won’t see her achieve her dreams, but she likes to imagine her dad is somewhat still proud of her. So now, she’s taking classes during the day, and working as a custodian from 5 pm to about 1 in the morning. She doesn’t get much sleep or rest in between school and work and studying, but her eyes are on the prize so she makes it work. Unfortunately, however, that doesn’t give her much time to build real relationships, so casual, no-strings attached hook-ups will have to do. Her many one-night stands and lack of commitment may also have everything to do with abandonment issues she’s brushed to the back of her mind.
She’s looking at the different examples of non-contractual wrongs most frequently covered in tort cases when she hears a very frustrated “Ughh!” coming from one of the labs on the floor. She immediately goes over to the source and figures it’s the brunette that she always sees working late as of recently.
Lauren and the girl has this sort of implicit acquaintance kind of relationship where they don’t really know each other’s names, but they’ve seen each other so much the last few weeks that they’re on a wave-and-smile-at-each-other basis now. The brunette works on both the sixth and seventh floors and uses multiple lab rooms for her experiments, depending on what equipment she needs.
This doesn’t usually pose a problem because during the day, all the labs are unlocked. As people leave, however, and they lock their respective lab rooms, Camila has to deal with going up to the seventh floor, only to go back down to her main lab and retrieve her keys because she never has them with her.
Lauren has picked up on the girl’s tendency to leave her keys as she’s seen the brunette stomping through the floor, muttering profanities and stupid keys under her breath as she tries to walk quickly without spilling the samples in her hands on multiple occasions.
As amused as Lauren is watching the girl, however, she does feel bad for her. So, she got in the habit of unlocking all the lab doors in both floors when she first comes in for her shift. Camila doesn’t really know about it but it always makes Lauren smile when she sees the other girl whisper-yell Bless! when she finds out the doors are unlocked.
Up until this moment, they haven’t really said a word to one another. Lauren rushes into the lab where she figures the other girl is and cautiously steps in,
“Um, is everything okay in here? Are you all right?” Lauren asks.
Camila turns around and blushes in embarrassment at attracting attention to her meltdown. She forgot Green Eyes works on this floor too. “Oh yeah, um –,” Camila responds. “Everything is fine,” she says hurriedly, then pauses to think. “Actually, I’m contemplating about the possible the consequences of breaking the window and jumping through it, but other than that, everything is absolutely fine,” she says with a pained smile.
Lauren rubs the back of her neck unsurely and says, “Is there any way I can help?” she asks. “Coz I mean, I’d probably have to clean up the shards of glass if you do that and I still have this floor and a few floors to get through,” she says with a smile.
Camila, for the first time that night, cracks a small smile, “Well I don’t know if you know much about equipment stuff, but this centrifuge,” she gestures as she sends the machine a cold glare, “just stopped working for no reason.”
“Did you try turning it off and on again?” Lauren asks with a hint of a smile.
“As a matter of fact, I did,” Camila says seriously, “it’s still not working.”
Lauren takes a look at the machine and says, “Well, I’ve seen this machine in a few other floors. There’s one on the tenth floor, I think?” she says as she scratches her head. “I can get you access to one of the rooms if you want. Just make sure you don’t break that too,” Lauren offers.
Camila’s eyes brighten at that, “Can you really do that?” she says with excitement. “I promise I’ll be quick, I just want to go home,” she pouts.
“For sure,” Lauren says, “Come on, I’ll show you there. I’m Lauren, by the way,” she introduces herself as they get into the elevator.
“Camila,” the brunette responds. “Thanks for saving my experiment.”
“No big deal,” Lauren says. “Just gotta give me credit now when you guys get published,” she says with a smirk.
Camila laughs and thinks the night’s not so bad after all.
–
After the centrifuge incident, Camila and Lauren’s relationship has progressed to short, friendly conversations, asking each other about things like Camila’s project and Lauren’s Legal Procedures class and Camila’s cat and so on. One Friday night, Camila doesn’t come into the lab until around five. She’s spent the day attending meetings after meetings and conferences about upcoming conferences and afterwards, she had to meet with her mentor about revisions to her grant, so, long story short, it’s been a long day. And she still has to come in the lab because the experiment she started yesterday had a two-day time course. Despite her exhaustion, she doesn’t really dread coming into lab like she would have before meeting the green-eyed girl, however. In the few times she’d been able to talk to the other girl, she’d found out how Lauren was juggling school and work and she can’t help but admire her. Camila knows she herself works hard, it’s no small feat to get into Columbia Med, but she had also lived a very privileged life. Both her parents are doctors and they attended Ivy League schools for both undergrad and med school. Camila never had to worry about working for tuition or running out of resources when studying for standardized tests. Lauren, on the other hand, is pursuing her dreams without any support from her family. Camila discovered that Lauren is very intelligent, but can be very silly too. She puts out this bad girl image but is an actual puppy once you get to know her. It also doesn’t hurt that she’s hot as fuck. Lauren has midnight black hair that plunges down her shoulders in semi-short, wavy locks. The way the strands flows through Lauren’s fingers when she flips her hair to achieve a careless-but-gorgeous messy hair look sends Camila’s heart racing and mouth watering. Her lips are almost always chapped but they still look like they could be softer than lilac and Camila sometimes wonders how those lips would feel against her own, or her neck, or other places. Camila’s not even going to get into details about Lauren’s eyes. They’re vibrant and tantalizing and lets Camila know every emotion Lauren might be trying to hide otherwise in her attempt to have a mysterious girl persona. Thick eyebrows provide a perfect complement to the way her velvety lashes fall over her forest green eyes. Her body looks soft and toned at the same time and Camila imagines the many different ways she could worship her silky, creamy skin that envelopes her voluptuous curves [A/N: Can you tell I’m a Lauren girl or what].
So, yeah, she’s tired but excited to see the other girl. She also brought some Pad Thai for them to share over dinner. She noticed Lauren rarely had more than a mere sandwich for dinner and she figures meals take a back seat when she goes to school all day and works all night. “Hi Lauren,” she greets happily. “Hi Camila,” Lauren says as she’s pulling her cart out of the supplies closet. She can’t help but feel lighter at the other girl’s presence. Camila, she found out early on, is a very cheerful person. She might a have a mental breakdown or two every once in a while, but Lauren figures that’s probably normal for aspiring doctors. She’s also very smart, and nothing turns Lauren on like a sexy mind. Lauren really appreciates her company. The older girl can be very closed off and that’s mostly because she’s been alone for a long time, and although that’s mainly her choice, she hasn’t realized how much she missed genuine companionship until Camila. At around half past seven, Camila calls Lauren over to the lounge. “What’s up,” Lauren says, walking into the lounge and finding Camila pulling out two Styrofoam boxes. “Eat dinner with me,” she says with a wide smile. That smile is really going to cause problems for Lauren in the long run. “And don’t even try to say you’ve eaten already as an excuse, I know you don’t usually eat till like eight,” she says as she continues to unpack their utensils and napkin. Lauren walks in and sits across from Camila, “Well since I’m being coerced, I guess so,” she says with fake annoyance. Camila smiles so widely Lauren’s scared she might split her face in half. “Ooh, my favorite,” Lauren says excitedly as she opens the box. “Yeah, I remember you mentioned it once,” Camila says as she stuffs her mouth with a forkful of noodles. Lauren watches with something in her eyes but Camila is too busy trying to poke her shrimp with her chopstick to notice. Lauren just shakes her head fondly and is glad to eat a real meal for once. Camila doesn’t finish her experiment until around midnight and it’s not until she’s locking up that she realizes the city circulator only runs until midnight and now she’s either gonna have to pay the outrageous Friday night prices for Uber or take an equally pricey cab home or risk New York subway at this time of night.
“Fuck,” Camila whispers as she takes her phone out to check Uber.
“What’s wrong?” Lauren asks as she slings her backpack over her shoulder, approaching Camila with her keys in her hand, ready to lock the building up. Camila looks up and briefly wonders how someone can look good in a blue and white striped button-up polo shirt and gray pants (their lab’s custodian uniform).
“I missed the last run of the circulator,” Camila sighs. “I’m gonna have to get Uber with this crazy price surge or risk the subway,” she pouts and proceeds to take her bottom lip between her teeth, a nervous tick Lauren has learned to recognize. A very tempting and distracting nervous tick, might she add.
“Well I can give you a ride,” Lauren offers. “I’m clocking out early anyway since I finished the floors quicker than I thought I would,” she says with a shrug.
Camila lets out a sigh of relief and with an exaggerated bat of her eyelashes coupled with her hands clasped tightly in front of her, “Please, if you would be so kind. That would be much appreciated,” she pleads comically.
“You sure you don’t want to be an actress instead?” she quips while lightly shoving her. Lightly is a relative word however and with Camila’s (lack of) coordination, she nearly takes a fall face-first and sees her life flash before her eyes before she feels strong arms wrap around her and the rush of sweet-smelling vanilla invade her senses. “Whoa, Camila,” Lauren says still holding onto the other girl. “I didn’t even push you that hard,” she ends up laughing at the other girl as she steadies her and finally lets go.
Camila just pouts and crosses her arms, “I could have died, Lauren! My coordination is like that of a baby deer, you can’t just mess with me like that.”
“Okay, princess,” Lauren says holding the door open for Camila, “Noted: Camila Cabello is fragile. Please handle with care,” she chuckles as Camila wills the blush that creeps up her cheeks at Lauren’s words away.
–
Camila knows she’s a pretty smart girl. Again, Columbia Med is the real deal. She can be very forgetful about things that doesn’t concern cells and biological pathways, however. Things like remembering to bring her house keys before she leaves the house. She shares a town house with her roommate, Dinah, who just so happens to be out of town and won’t be coming back until that Saturday evening.
So now, she’s standing in front of her door, with her forehead leaning against it, praying to the heavens above that it could magically open for her. It’s nearing one in the morning and she’s been up since seven yesterday and she just wants to lay her overworked body down.
Lauren is sitting in her car watching Camila as she bangs her head against her front door. She gets out of the car when she figures Camila has probably done enough damage to her head and walks up to the brunette, “I don’t think that’s how doors work.”
“Shit,” Camila turns around with her hand on her heart. “You scared me, what the hell, Lauren. I thought you left.”
“Well I wanted to make sure you got in your house safely first,” she explains and Camila’s gaze softens. Lauren makes it obvious that she looks at the locked door and then back to Camila’s defeated expression and says, “And it looks like that was a good decision on my part. Did you lock yourself out?”
Camila just bows her head and mutters a low, “yes.”
Lauren’s mouth curves into a small smile and says, “Would you like to stay over at my place for the night? We can work this out tomorrow morning, when we’re both not running on six hours of sleep combined.”
Camila thinks about it and well, she discovers there’s not much she’d say no to when it comes to Lauren.
–
Lauren’s place is a single-person loft that has an open floor plan so the bedroom/living room is basically in the same area as the kitchen. It’s essentially an only-slightly bigger room than a bedroom in a normal-sized house with its own bathroom. She lives in New York so to have her own place like this feels like she’s living in a mansion. She just hopes Camila doesn’t mind the tight space.
“So um-,” Lauren starts. “I live by myself and I only really use this place to sleep so I don’t have like a separate couch or anything, but if you feel uncomfortable sharing a bed, you can stay in mine and I can lay down a few blankets on the floo-” she starts to ramble self-consciously once Camila has gotten a good look around the place.
“Don’t be silly, Laur” Camila says while still admiring the place. It’s very small but it’s also very cozy and she noticed that the little decorations and posters are very Lauren and she can’t help but think she’s been given a rare chance to see another side to Lauren. “Of course I’ll share a bed with you. You’ve already helped me out so much this evening, I’m not really in a position to be demanding,” she chuckles.
“Okay,” Lauren says relieved, she really didn’t want to sleep on the floor. “Well, the bathroom is that way,” she gestures to the far side of the room “And I have some clothes you can borrow in the bottom drawer of my dresser.”
“Sweet,” Camila says as she heads to the dresser.
–
Lauren finds out the painful way that she might have been better off on the floor. She wakes up a few times during the night only to find one of Camila’s limbs haphazardly strewn across her face, or her stomach, and every once in a while, she wakes up with half of Camila’s body on top of her. Lauren, in her tired and sleepy state, goes only short of throwing Camila’s body off of her own and she learns that the brunette is a very heavy sleeper.
When she wakes up thirty minutes before her alarm with Camila wrapped around her like a koala, she decides it’s not worth trying to go back to sleep. She carefully pries Camila’s arms and legs from her and moves on to the bathroom to get ready for her day. When she gets out of the bathroom, she’s met with the smell of brewing coffee and a sleepy Camila sat on one of her dining chairs, rubbing her eyes with her hands.
“Good morning,” Lauren says walking to sit across from Camila. “I didn’t think you’d be up for a while. You’re the heaviest sleeper I’ve ever seen, I had to make sure you were still alive before I got up,” she laughs lightly while pouring herself a cup of coffee.
Camila frowns a little and furrows her brow, scrunching up her nose when she says, “It got cold,” she rasps, voice still thick with sleep. Lauren smiles at how sleepy and confused Camila looks. After a few minutes of eating some light breakfast in comfortable silence, Camila finally notices that Lauren is dressed like she’s going somewhere. It’s only seven-thirty in the morning. And it’s a Saturday.
“Do you go to work on the weekends too or…” Camila trails.
Lauren cleans up their dishes and says, “Um no, I go to this thing on Saturday mornings. You can stay here and sleep or rest or whatever, I know you’ve had many long nights these last few weeks. We’ll sort out your key situation when I get back around noon.” Lauren wipes her hands on a kitchen towel and is getting her stuff ready to go when Camila says,
“Wait, ‘this thing,” Camila says, making air quotes with her fingers. “That’s suspiciously vague, Lo” she smiles teasingly.
Lauren is caught off guard with the warm feeling that spreads through her with the nickname. She feels the words leave Camila’s mouth and permeate her being like an all-encompassing fog that muddles her brain. She shakes her thoughts away and says, “Yeah, it’s no big deal. It’s just this place I help out with when I can.”
“Okay, if you secretly run a drug cartel, I won’t judge you. I promise, I know times are hard,” Camila says with a smirk putting her hands up as if to say she’s surrendering in probing about this thing that Lauren does on Saturdays.
“Not a drug cartel, just a small prostitution business thing to help out with the bills, you know” Lauren says with a straight face.
After a few seconds of looking at each other seriously, they both burst out laughing. “Okay, seriously,” Camila manages to get out when her laughter subsides, “Is it like personal, because if it is, I totally get it. I won’t ask any more. But if it’s nothing like that, I’m just curious” she shrugs.
“Okay, um-” Lauren shuffles in her place a little, running her hand through her hair and flipping it to one side as a sign that she’s getting a little nervous. “I volunteer at this homeless shelter,” she finishes in a quiet voice as if she just confessed to being a serial killer.
Of course she volunteers at a homeless shelter. Because she doesn’t have enough going for her. So apparently, she’s not only incredibly smart and hot as fuck and pretty and adorable, she also part-times as Mother Theresa on the weekends, because why the fuck not. Camila is really close to doing something reckless, like kissing Lauren, or burying her hands in her hair - or somewhere else.
“Oookay,” Camila drags out. “Well, I don’t have anything else to do, so if you don’t mind, can I come with you?”
Lauren looks up surprised, “Yeah, sure. They’re always looking for volunteers,” she says with a wide smile.
–
Lauren walks in the shelter and is immediately brought into an elderly Hispanic woman’s arms, “Lauren, mija, I’m so glad you could stop by,” she says. The woman looks to be in her fifties and she has a full head of powder-white hair neatly contained in a bun. The jaded crow lines around her eyes lets Camila know she’d lived a life not without worries but filled with laughter nonetheless. She has an amiable smile and her bright hazel eyes twinkle with years of wisdom.
They pull apart and Camila approaches Lauren, standing to the older girl’s side while fiddling with her fingers, not really sure how to act. “Mima, this is my friend, Camila,” Lauren says with a slight Cuban accent and wow it’s suddenly hot in the room Camila thinks.
Camila goes in for a handshake but gets taken in for a hug instead. She sees Lauren looking at her with a soft smile over the woman’s shoulders and she feels inexplicable affection course through her veins. Lauren’s gaze is unwavering and gentle and just so soft that Camila feels like she’s suffocating in the best way.
The woman finally lets her go and coos, “Oh, mija, you’re absolutely beautiful.” Camila blushes and Lauren just looks at the pair completely endeared. The woman looks back at Lauren and winks, “You did a good job with this one.”
Camila blushes even more, she’s sure everyone in the room can feel the heat radiating off her face by now. “Mima,” Lauren says exasperatedly, “I just said she’s a friend.”
“Right, friend’” the woman says, “Is that what the kids call it these days?” She pretends to think and snaps her fingers, trying to remember something, “It’s like a – oh what did that show call it – friends with strings? Or strings benefits?” she says with a confused face.
“Oh my gosh, Mima,” Lauren says, now blushing herself, “Can we not do this today, please?”
“Oh I’m just messing with you, Lauren,” the woman says with a light laugh. “Anyway, you can call me Ms. Maria, or if you’re comfortable enough, call me Mima,” she addresses Camila with a squeeze of her shoulder.

Camila and Lauren are working side by side preparing the food that is about to be served for breakfast when Camila nudges Lauren, “So what else do you do on your day off,” she asks the green-eyed girl with a hint of teasing in her voice.
“Save kittens? Secretly work on the cure for cancer?” the brunette asks as she cracks some hard-boiled eggs.
Lauren shakes her head and flicks some water on Camila. “Hey!” Camila says and retaliates by flicking some of the bread crumbs by the table at Lauren. “Camz!” Lauren says while laughing and holding her hands up, catching Camila’s wrists when she tries to smear some on the dark-haired girl’s face.
“Alright lovebirds, save the foreplay for when you’re alone please,” Ms. Maria casually says as she walks past them to set a tray of food by the far end of the table. Both girls flush red and immediately go back to work.
Lauren clears her throat and says, “This place is really important to me.” Camila’s attention is immediately taken by Lauren when she hears the seriousness in her voice.
“I made the mistake of thinking my parents were going to be accepting of me and came out to them in the beginning of the summer before college. They immediately kicked me out and essentially ostracized me from our community and the rest of our family friends so I was practically homeless for a period of time, basically from the start of the summer to the beginning of the semester, during which I could live on campus because I secured a full ride” Lauren explains with a small crack in her voice.
Camila looks at her with a mix of rage and sympathy bubbling inside her, but most of all, she feels her heart clench at hearing about what Lauren has gone through.
“I didn’t have anywhere else to go so I used some of my savings for a trip to New York and thought I’d make it work here and just wait it out until I could start school. Mima took me in the shelter and basically helped me survive those couple months. So now, I try to do my best to help out here,” she looks up at Camila with a shrug and a weak smile.
Without even thinking about it, Camila takes off the plastic gloves on her hands and reaches one hand up to delicately wipe a tear that has escaped Lauren’s watery green eyes with her thumb and whispers so only Lauren can hear, “I’m so sorry about your parents,” she says sincerely. “I want you to know that you’re not alone, fuck them, alright? I’m here for you.”
“Hey, it’s okay,” Lauren assures her, wiping some of Camila’s tears that she hadn’t even realized were falling too. “I’m okay now and I’m happy. Thank you for being…” Lauren trails off and swallows hard. Her smile is full of tenderness when she finishes, “Thank you for being you.”
–
They’re cleaning up the place after breakfast when Camila looks up at the sound of booming laughter. Lauren is surrounded by some of the patrons that are yet to leave and laughing at something she’s saying. She’s gesticulating wildly with her arms and has got everyone’s attention on her. There’s a diversity to her audience in that there are men who are dressed with tattered clothing while holding onto trash bags that hold whatever belongings they may have, while others are dressed with slightly better clothes and have tattoos on their arms and faces, a few of which Camila notices, are sporting teardrop tattoos by their eyes.
As tough as these men look, they’re all looking at Lauren like kindergarteners during story time.
Lauren’s skin is bright and glowing under the harsh fluorescent lights and Camila can hear faint police sirens in the background, a subtle reminder to Camila that despite the warm and comforting environment Lauren has made with her presence and her smile and her stories, they are still in the dangerous part of the neighborhood.
Camila watches them and can’t help but smile.
“She’s a keeper, no?” Ms. Maria sneaks up on Camila and it’s like the brunette has to forcibly turn her attention away from Lauren before she’s able to answer,
“Huh?”
Ms. Maria just shakes her head and says, “Lauren can be very closed off, I’m glad she has you.” Camila is about to respond when the older woman says, “As a friend, of course,” she adds with a wink. Camila looks down with a hint of a smile and says,
“I’m glad I have her too.”
“As you probably know, she’s had a pretty rough time since getting disowned by her parents. She’s gone through so much and still loves like she’s never going to get hurt,” Ms. Maria says while fondly watching Lauren.
“She cares so much about the people around her that I worry who is there to take care of her, you know?” Ms. Maria continues while turning to Camila, “She might be hard to crack at first, but once you’re in, she loves with all of her heart.” She takes a pause before saying,
“Take care of her, okay mija?” the older woman asks Camila with nothing but genuine sincerity in her eyes.
Camila wants to say, of course, she’ll take care of her. She’s her friend. That’s what friends do. She wants to clarify that despite the insinuations throughout the morning and the subtle flirting between them, they’re just friends. Instead, her thoughts come out as,
“I’ll take care of her with all of my being, Ms. Maria. I know she deserves so much more,” she says sincerely. There’s a glint to Ms. Maria’s eyes like she had gotten what she wanted from Camila and they continue to work to get the shelter ready for new group of people coming in for the lunch hour.
–
Ever since their time at the shelter, there has been a noticeable amount of increased tension between Lauren and Camila. It’s making the air thick around Camila and the heat between her thighs uncomfortable.
It’s like this constant heavy wave of sexual tension that rises and ebbs within Camila whenever she’s around Lauren. The older girl’s eyes pull her into a trance that seems to keep the rest of her body’s fibers anchored towards the green-eyed girl. The taut atmosphere is pulling at Camila’s nerves in every direction and she wonders how much longer her body can take being strained without snapping.
She’s being suffocated and she doesn’t think she minds, especially if it’s going to be by Lauren’s thighs. Lauren, for her part, is either a fantastic actress or is completely oblivious to the smothering air.
It doesn’t help that Lauren makes the most mundane things look so sensual. Camila finds herself staring at Lauren’s mouth when the other girl’s talking and the way her pink tongue glides along her luscious lips when she’s trying to keep them moist completely captivates the brunette. Sometimes, they’ll hang out in the lounge during Lauren’s break and the green-eyed girl will play with Camila’s pens and the brunette finds herself entranced in the way Lauren’s long, slender fingers will slide along the pen, back and forth. Camila learns Lauren can get really restless with her fingers. She thinks of a few ways she can help Lauren with that.
So, yeah, Camila is feeling taut and frustrated and she’s not a hundred percent sure she’s not going to jump Lauren anytime soon.
She figures some completely platonic time with Lauren in a setting where she’s not alone with the dark-haired girl can help dampen down her frustration a bit. She decides to invite Lauren to a small symposium event where she has a brief presentation about her research. While they’re walking out of the event, with Camila holding her poster tube in one hand and a box of take out Lauren had ordered for them to eat back in the younger girl’s place, they run into someone.
“Lauren, hey!” the girl says as she engulfs Lauren in a hug that’s a little too long and a little too tight for Camila’s liking. “It’s so good to see you,” the girl, who’s keeping both hands on Lauren’s arms, says with a megawatt smile.
“Hey, Tanya,” Lauren greets with a wide smile of her own. “How’ve you been,” she asks. And, okay, is Camila like chopped liver or what?
“I’ve been good,” girl with the perfect teeth says. She’s got beautiful, flawless ebony skin and her body is banging, Camila notes. “Though, I have missed you,” she says with a flirty smile and a brush of her slim fingers down Lauren arms and Camila finds herself imagining swinging the tube in her hand and hitting this girl who is shamelessly touching her Lauren. Not really her Lauren, but who cares about semantics?
Camila clears her throat and Lauren startles, as if she’d just remembered she wasn’t alone. “Oh yeah, Tanya, this is my friend, Camila,” the green-eyed girl gestures to the brunette, whose quiet seething seems to be unnoticed. Tanya subtly rakes her eyes up and down Camila’s body with a kinked eyebrow and says with a tight-lipped smile, “Hey.”
“Hi, it’s nice to mee-,” Camila tries to say.
“So, who’s keeping you busy these days, huh?” Tanya interrupts, turning her attention to Lauren once again.
Lauren rubs the back of her neck and throws a subtle glance in Camila’s direction that goes unseen by the brunette because she’s too busy staring holes into Tanya’s head. “Um, no one really,” Lauren finally says.
Tanya’s phone rings and she looks at it briefly before she sighs out, “Ugh, gotta take this. But keep in touch, Laur. You know where to find me if you ever wanna relive the good times,” she winks and finally walks away.
Camila stays quiet on their way to her place and Lauren breaks the silence hesitantly, “So um- are you still good for Saturday this week?” Lauren asks unsurely, her eyes trying to gauge Camila’s reaction.
“Um, you know what, I actually don’t think I can come this week, something came up,” Camila says, her tone cold and too aloof for Lauren’s taste.
“Oh, that sucks. The boys were kind of looking for-” Lauren tries to say, but Camila’s bad mood is getting to her and she snaps,
“It’s one time, Laur. I said I was busy. Why do you have to make me feel guilty?”
“I- I’m sorry,” Lauren says with her head down. “I wasn’t trying to make you-”
“Why don’t you ask Tanya? I’m sure she’d love to go” Camila says, her voice dripping with irritation. “You guys are close, right?”
“I wouldn’t say close,” Lauren says weakly. She looks at the other girl’s demeanor and furrows her brows. “We had this thing, but it was never serious.”
“Of course,” Camila scoffs.
“What is that supposed to mean?” Lauren asks with a flash of hurt in her voice.
“Oh come on, Lo,” Camila insists, still unaware that she’s touching on a sensitive topic for Lauren. “You’ve told me stories about these girls, they practically come in and out of your place and you go through them like a merry-go-round, right?” she says, finally looking at Lauren and seeing that she’s stopped walking. Instead, she’s standing with her fists closed and her jaw clenched.
Camila quickly tries to backtrack and says, “I didn’t mean it like-“
“No, you’re right,” Lauren says with a curt tone. “You know what, I don’t think I can come to your place today after all, I just remembered something.”
“Lo” Camila says dejectedly, her actions and words finally catching up to her.
“No it’s fine,” Lauren says with a derisive laugh. “I forgot I had an appointment with one of the hundreds of girls I sleep with on a daily basis. It’s cool, maybe I can pencil you in some time when you’re free,” she says with a quiet but steady tone that send shivers down Camila’s back.
Lauren walks away before Camila can say anything and the brunette’s heart aches at seeing Lauren’s retreating figure.
The next day, when Camila has to stay late in the lab again, she notices Lauren making an extra effort to avoid her throughout her shift, only cleaning the labs she’s using when the green-eyed girl knows she’s done with the room. Camila also doesn’t appreciate how every lab room she needed to use that day was locked.
So now, she’s standing in front of Lauren’s apartment door on Saturday night, holding a bag of take-out Pad Thai. She’d contemplated on surprising Lauren at the shelter, but she figured Lauren wouldn’t appreciate her showing up when she knows the other girl is pissed at her and she didn’t want Lauren to talk to her only because she felt pressured.
She’s been standing for about ten minutes, trying to gather her words and rehearsing her apology when the door swings open and Lauren comes out, nearly bumping into Camila.
“Camila,” she says confusedly. “What are you doing here?”
Camila looks down and fiddles with the bag in her hands while biting her bottom lip. After a few seconds, she finally looks up and Lauren is looking at her with an expectant look and arms crossed against her chest.
The brunette takes a deep breath and starts with, “I’m sorry. I hope you believe me when I say I don’t think any less of you because of – of you know, how many people you date, or you’ve been with, or whatever -  I – just, um,” Camila lets out a frustrated breath, running her hand through her hair while shutting her eyes closed.
“I’m just sorry. I didn’t mean to be so insensitive. I have this bad habit of not thinking about what I’m saying and trying to hurt the other person when I’m angry, and I was just being moody and stupid, and I hope you can let me make it up you” Camila finally sighs out dejectedly.
Lauren looks at her and her gaze softens at the way Camila seems to be really beating herself up over their fight. Truth be told, she’d forgiven Camila the moment she opened the door and saw the brunette standing right outside her place. She had missed Camila so much in the last few days that they hadn’t talked that she finds herself feeling like she’d just lifted a ton of weight off her shoulders now that they’re talking again.
“It’s okay,” she finally says with a small smile. “We all says things we don’t mean every once in a while.”
“It’s actually not okay, but I’m not gonna pass up the opportunity to make this right again,” Camila says with a small smile. She looks at how Lauren is dressed to go and asks, “Were you on your way somewhere or…?”
“Yeah, I was just about to grab dinner,” Lauren responds.
“Perfect timing,” Camila says with a smile. “I brought Pad Thai. It was going to be a last ditch effort for your forgiveness if my speech hadn’t worked,” Camila says with a cheeky smile while holding up the bag like it’s a prize on The Price is Right. Lauren looks at her and shakes her head,
“Damn Cabello, you already know my weakness,” Lauren quips while re-opening her door and moving aside to let the other girl in.
“Comes in pretty handy,” Camila replies as she moves past Lauren after throwing her a wink.
–
After making up, the tension between the two picks right where it left off. Truth be told, Camila’s not really sure why she hadn’t made a move yet. She knows Lauren is bi (she got kicked out of her house for it). But for some reason, Camila is scared that she’s just reading into this whole thing completely wrong.
Then she thinks about the fact that ever since making up, Lauren seems to be clingier and generally touchier than usual. There’s always a hand on her lower back when they’re walking out of doors, lingering hugs and touches, and a lot of staring. Like, Lauren stares at her a lot and most of the time, the green-eyed girl doesn’t know that Camila knows she’s staring because Lauren’s eyes are locked on her lips. And maybe that’s what scares Camila the most. What if Lauren does like her back? She doesn’t know if she’d be able to handle all of that.
“So what are you doing for the holidays?” Camila says one night while they’re hanging out at the lounge.
“Um-,” Lauren starts, scrunching her brows and thinks about her plans. “I usually don’t have plans for the holidays. I mean, it’s not like I have family. So I just work, you know, get that holiday pay,” she says with a weak smile. “But since Christmas falls on the weekend this year, I’ll probably just catch up on some sleep.”
Camila’s heart tightens at the reminder that despite the fact that she gets to see a happy and carefree Lauren most of the time, the older girl is actually dealing with a lot more than just school and work. She clears her throat and keeps her eyes on her fingers when she asks,
“Well, this is completely up to you and you can say no, I promise it won’t hurt my feelings,” Camila starts to say nervously. “But if you want, and like I said, if you think it’s too much or too soon, or we aren’t there yet in our friendship, I just wanted you to know it’s compl-”
“Camz,” Lauren laughs a little. “Just ask me already.”
“Um, well I usually drive down to Miami for the holidays, you know, to come home,” Camila explains. “I know it’s a long drive, but I don’t really like driving anyone else’s car when I’m home so the drive doesn’t really bother me. But, if you don’t have plans and you can take a few days off for the holidays, you can come with me? I definitely won’t mind the company,” she finishes as she looks up with a smile and hopeful brown eyes. She really doesn’t want Lauren to be alone, she’d meant it more than she thought when she said she would take care of the other girl.
Lauren is looking at her with an unreadable expression. The green-eyed girl doesn’t know what she did to deserve someone that always looks out for her like Camila does and although her first instinct is to decline, she finds herself saying,
“If it truly isn’t a bother…” Lauren responds with a bashful smile that just tugs at Camila’s heart strings.
“No of course it’s not,” Camila says happily. “Oh my gosh, this is so exciting. I’m gonna make you listen to every boy band to ever exist in history for twenty whole hours!” Camila exclaims with a cheeky smile while raising both hands in the air.
–
Camila finds herself wide awake in her childhood bedroom while Lauren is snoring softly next to her. It had been a very long and tiring, but cheerful and exciting last few days in Miami. They arrived in Miami around midnight and got about six hours of sleep before the entire Cabello household was up and about. The Cabellos host the Christmas holidays every year and so just about every nook and cranny of their home was filled with several generations of Cuban and Mexican heritage: from bisabuelo/as to abuelo/as to papĂĄs and mamas, to tĂo/as, and sobrina/os, and so on and so on. It was a full house.
Camila’s family has always been welcoming and never really been hard to please. Still, seeing Lauren interact effortlessly as if she had grown up with Camila’s cousins and it was her who is Camila’s abuela’s favorite, well it clarified one thing to Camila. She is not only attracted to the older girl, she’s undoubtedly falling for her too.
“Mija! You’re finally home!” Camila drops her bags and runs straight into the arms of who Lauren assumes is her mother, as she carries both of their bags towards the front of the house. She smiles softly at the younger girl and the brunette’s mom catches her eye as she keeps Camila in her arms.
“Oh hi, you must be Lauren,” Camila’s mom says as she brings the other girl into a hug as well. Lauren returns the hug and smiles unsurely over the older woman’s shoulder while Camila just grins widely and brings her two thumbs up.
“We’ve heard so much about you. I’m glad Camila is finally bringing someone home,” the woman says with smile and a glimmer in her eye.
“Mami,” Camila stresses while her mom just waves her off. “Oh I just mean I’m glad you’re not all alone in that big ole city, mija” she quips.
“Well, I hope I’m not intruding Mrs. Cabello and you have a lovely home,” Lauren says as they walk in through the threshold, Lauren still the only one carrying their bags.
“Oh don’t be silly, call me Sinu” the woman smiles warmly.
“Kaki!” a mini Camila comes running down from upstairs, jumping from the second to the last step to wrap actual Camila into a koala hug.
“Sofi, it’s almost midnight,” Sinu tuts. “I told you to go to bed hours ago, mija,” she says sternly.
Sofi clings onto her sister and pouts dramatically, “But I miss Kaki.”
“Oh, it’s okay Sof, I missed you too,” Camila says as she hugs her tightly and then says, “I promise we’ll play all day tomorrow, okay? Go to bed,” she finishes while hugging her once more and sending her off. Before going up the stairs however, Sofi goes up to Lauren and says with a wide smile,
“You must be Ms. Pretty Green Eyes. Kaki talks about you a lot. She says-”
“Ookay, Sof, that’s enough,” Camila laughs awkwardly while clamping both her hands around Sofi’s mouth. She throws her mom a glare when she hears her snicker to the side and Lauren is just looking at her with a kinked eyebrow and an amused smile.
Throughout the last few days, Camila couldn’t help but watch Lauren and how the dark-haired girl wove her way into the hearts of the most important people in Camila’s life with absolute ease and grace. People naturally gravitated towards her and constantly surrounded her all day, listening with eager ears and bright eyes. She looked especially at home among the kids, playing with them and teaching them how to play the piano while dressed in a reindeer sweater and a bright red Santa hat and Camila knows she’s falling.
“Well you’re definitely smitten,” Camila’s abuela on her mom’s side takes a seat next to her on the couch as she sips on her tea. “I don’t blame you though, your girlfriend is very pretty.”
Camila’s eyes widen and she struggles to say, “Um, ‘buela, no,” she laughs nervously while running a hand through her hair. “We’re not, um-, she’s just, we’re like-”
“Oh Camilita,” her grandma says as she reaches out a hand to rub her back and calm her down, “I may be old but I know the look of love if I ever see one,” she smiles. “It’s how your abuelo used to look at me everyday of his life before he passed.”
Love?
She’s not – she’s falling, yes. But does she love Lauren? She can’t yet, right? They’re not even together.
Lauren impressed the mothers with her skills in the kitchen, earning several Oh you’ll make such a good wife, mija type of comments throughout the day and Camila swears she sees Lauren blush and throw her a quick look. She also managed to get into the exclusive club of Camila’s tíos, easily baiting them with her knowledge on various sports, speaking on touchdowns and batting averages and whatever it is sports people talk about. Camila can’t help but imagine coming back to Miami with Lauren under different circumstances.
She looks over to her left and smiles when she sees Lauren move closer. Lauren is on her stomach and snuggles close to Camila so her face is tucked in between Camila’s shoulder and neck while the rest of their bodies are kept mostly apart. They’re barely touching and Camila already finds it hard to breathe.
After a tearful goodbye filled with hugs and her mom begging her to Please come visit again soon, mija and Sofi sending her off with an I’m gonna miss you so much, Kaki. Can we keep Lauren forever? She’s more fun than you sometimes, they’re finally on the road again.
They’re in the middle of rural Pennsylvania when a strong storm leads them to get stranded behind a closed-off back road after several trees and telephone lines block the roadway as a result of a landslide from the surrounding hills. The severe flood warning blowing up their phones pushes them to take a detour in a side road and stop by the closest inn they come across.
“Fuck,” Camila says frantically searching her bag as Lauren pulls in to park at one of the spots in the inn’s parking lot. She notes that they have a full house and she hopes there’s room for them still.
“What’s wrong?” Lauren asks.
“Ugh,” Camila says as she leans back and hits her head in the head rest repeatedly in frustration.
“Okay, you really gotta stop abusing your head like that,” Lauren says as she reaches out and puts her hand in between Camila’s head and the head rest. “You need that for medical school, you know,” she chuckles while subconsciously wrapping her hand around the back of Camila’s neck lightly and rubbing soothing circles on the skin just above the brunette’s shirt with her thumb.
Camila relaxes immediately and looks at Lauren. The world around them sounds like it’s falling apart and Camila has never felt safer. The downpour is relentlessly thrumming against the roof, the winds are howling around them, and the rain is steadily drumming against the windows of the car, but she feels absolutely secure. She thinks it may have something to do with the way Lauren is holding her gaze and the way her touch is keeping her grounded.
Lauren’s eyes look luminous under the single light bulb pouring in through the front from the inn’s porch and the reflection of the water gliding down the windshield is casting mesmeric patterns on Lauren’s face, making her look absolutely ethereal. In Camila’s world of stressful and rainy days, Lauren is her constant source of peace, her own personal serenity in the midst of storms.
Camila smiles lightly at Lauren then looks down at her hands, “I’m like ninety-nine percent sure I left my purse at Mami’s house,” she pouts.
Lauren laughs lightly, “Oh Cabello, you and your forgetful self. It’s okay, I’ll spot you this one time,” she says easily. “You can pay me later. I know you’re good for it,” she winks and wow the tension is back full force. God damn Lauren and her stupid, beautiful self.
Lauren then grabs her jacket from the back seat and runs out of the car without putting it on, confusing Camila until the older girl runs to her side of the car and opens her door, both hands holding up her jacket where Camila can step out under it. Camila quickly grabs their stuff and gets out of the car, huddling close to Lauren as the green-eyed girl holds the jacket over both of them, most of it over Camila, if Lauren’s soaked hair and clothes are any indication.
They rush inside and see that there’s a line at the desk. Lauren grabs Camila’s hand and brings them both to the end of the line, not letting go even after they’re stood in line. Camila is smiling at how perfectly their hands fit together when Lauren mutters under her breath, “Shit.”
Camila looks at her and raises her eyebrow. “Look over there,” Lauren says as she raises their intertwined hands to gesture towards a bulletin board behind the lady in the front desk, her other hand holding the bags she’d taken from Camila the moment they were inside. “Those rates are crazy, I don’t think I have enough money.” Lauren has been cutting it close on her finances in the last week because she took a few days off and she had to recently pay for the books she’ll need for the upcoming semester.
Lauren’s eyes scan the board and comes across a note that says Discount for Newlyweds. Bingo. She looks around and realizes the décor of the inn is very homey and gives off a vibe of a getaway house and she realizes she’s surrounded by all kinds of couples.
“Next,” the old lady at the front calls out.
“Alright, follow my lead,” Lauren whispers in Camila’s ear, the proximity of Lauren’s mouth to her face distracting the brunette for a few seconds and before she realizes it, she’s being dragged to the front.
“Hello, welcome to The Lovers’ Lodge, how may I help you?” the old lady smiles.
Lauren squints at the woman’s nametag and says sweetly, “Martha, what a lovely name! Just one room, with one bed,” she adds conspiratorially, “for my new wife and I.” Camila looks at her with wide eyes. Lauren’s words fall from her lips with ease as they travel through the air and dives right into Camila’s heart, pulling at her heart strings and her lungs and literally taking her breath away. She’s brought back when Lauren squeezes her hand. The brunette takes a while to catch up, but when she does, she takes a deep breath before gently leaning over to rest her head on Lauren’s shoulder and smiling at the lady at the front.
“You guys are married?” an older man comes up behind Martha and squints his eyes at the couple. “How?”
Lauren is about to answer when Martha cuts in with “Harold, they’re lesbians” she says with an eye roll.
Harold crosses his arms and says curtly, “Well, we need proof that you guys are married for you to get the discount. Usually, matching rings are enough for us.”
“Um, well actually,” Lauren says trying to think on her feet. “We just sent our rings back to be re-sized. They sort of messed up our orders, but I can assure you, sir, I love my wife very much,” she says, looking into Camila’s eyes sincerely and placing a tender kiss on her forehead, causing Camila to close her eyes and her cheeks to blush.
“Oh Harold, they’re obviously in love,” Martha says happily, “You ladies can have the discount,” she winks at them. The comment throws Lauren off guard but she recovers quickly and smiles, “Thank you Martha. You’re such a sweetheart.”
The inn is designed to look more like a house than a hotel and since the owners are old-fashioned and very traditional, they invited the couples who are staying in the lodge for a huge home-cooked dinner. Lauren and Camila find themselves sitting around a large dining table, just talking with other couples in the inn while having dessert.
There’s a variety of different couples that range from young newlyweds to couples who have recently celebrated or are nearing their golden anniversary. Lauren’s eyes marvel at the amount of love that surrounds her and she can’t help sending Camila a fond smile.
“So, what’s everyone’s story? I mean, how did y’all meet,” a man who looks to be in his mid twenties asks the table with a Southern accent, breaking Camila and Lauren’s staring contest. Lauren listens in carefully as she hears couples talk about how they were high school sweethearts, or how another couple met while the woman was working as an army nurse and her husband was sent to their station when his troops got caught in an ambush, or how this very young couple said they defied their parents and decided to elope.
She’s enjoying the stories so much she doesn’t realize everyone is now looking at her expectantly. “Lo,” Camila nudges her arm and she realizes it’s their turn.
When she just looks at Camila helplessly, the brunette takes the lead and says, “Well, the first time I met Lo officially, aside from just seeing her in passing in the building where we work, was when she saved me. I’m basically her damsel in distress,” she says dramatically with a hand to her forehead, eliciting a round of chuckles around the table. Camila looks at her and winks. “From then on, I got the impression she’d be important to me,” she finishes genuinely.
“What about you, Lauren” Martha asks. “What was your first impression of Camila when you so-called saved her,” she chuckles.
“Actually, the first time I got an impression of Camila was way before we had spoken,” she says candidly while Camila turns to her with furrowed eyebrows. Lauren casually drapes her arm around the back of Camila’s chair and continues.
“I was walking on my way to work when I saw Camila coming out of the building to head home. My first thought was, as I assume is everyone’s first thought when they see her, is that ‘wow, that girl is really beautiful,’” Lauren says with a fond smile. “Then, I see her read something from her phone and she does this stupid little dance that looks more awkward than anything,” she says as Camila lightly pushes her face away while muttering Oh my gosh, Lo. “And I was completely smitten. From then on, and she doesn’t know this,” Lauren says with a pause while looking at Camila, “but I made sure to look out for her whenever she worked late. And when she needed my help that one night, I knew that was my chance,’” she says finally looking back out to the rest of the guests. “So I took that opportunity and the rest is history. Seeing how happy I made her while helping her out made me realize there’s not much I wouldn’t do to see that smile,” she concludes.
While everyone in the table coos at the story, Camila is looking at her, stunned and completely captivated. This is fake, she tells herself. Lauren is embellishing to cover for their whole married act. This is all for the discount. The hammering in her chest and the fiery feeling that starts in her stomach and courses through veins and blazes in her nerves tell her otherwise.
She’s jolted out of her thoughts when Scott, the man who’d started the whole story-telling thing in the first place says, “Well that’s gotta deserve a kiss,” he smiles cheekily. The request is immediately picked up by the rest of the table and they all start cheering for a kiss.
Both girls immediately flush and Lauren turns away from Camila, looking at the people around her when she says, “Oh come on, guys. Are we in fifth grade?” she rolls her eyes.
The cheers continue and Lauren thinks she has to do something to satisfy them somehow so she turns to Camila and places a lingering kiss on her cheek.
“Boooo!” the boys on the table yell out lightheartedly. “Giver her a real kiss!”
Soon, the whole table is chanting “KISS! KISS! KISS!” and Lauren feels overwhelmed and she doesn’t mind kissing Camila to keep up their act but she also doesn’t want to overstep any lin-
Her thoughts are cut off by slender fingers softly holding her jaw to face towards Camila and she isn’t prepared for the softest lips she’s ever felt move along her own. It takes her no time to reciprocate and she’s lost in Camila’s velvety lips when the brunette pulls away, looking as dazed as Lauren feels. She really didn’t have a say when her body instinctively leans forward to capture Camila’s lips again. This time, more forcefully, with more passion and Camila gasps into her mouth as Lauren’s hold on the back of her neck tightens. Lauren probes Camila’s swollen lips with her tongue and quickly swipes the inside of her mouth once she’s granted access.
The table had erupted into loud cheers and obnoxious celebrations since Camila first grabbed Lauren’s face and it’s when the laughter dies down and Martha says, “Alright, let’s save that for the bedroom, yeah?” that they finally pull apart. Lauren looks at Camila’s swollen lips and dark, dazed eyes and she feels a fire at the pit of her stomach, every nerve and particle of her body thrumming inside her to drag Camila to their room and take her all night.
–
After dinner, Lauren and Camila wordlessly go back to their room, both still a little flushed from trying to assault each other’s mouths earlier. The air is thicker than ever and Camila makes a beeline for the shower without so much as a glance to Lauren.
Lauren, on the other hand, keeps her gaze at the closed bathroom door as if it would open on her silent command if she tried hard enough. She takes a few calming breaths to slow her heart and her libido down and takes a seat on the bed. She doesn’t realize how long she’d been replaying the kiss in her head when she hears the shower getting shut off.
She immediately goes to the door and knocks hesitantly, “Hey Camz, are you done? Can I come in? I just need to do something real quick.” The door opens and she enters. And she swears she really didn’t come in with the intention of making a move or anything. She came in to – actually, she’s not sure. She just wanted to be in close proximity to the brunette. Any lingering innocent thoughts fly out the window though when she gets a proper look at the brunette.
Camila is in front of the mirror setting up everything she needs for her nightly routine with one hand while the other is haphazardly holding her towel up. She’s dressed in nothing but a very short towel that is only loosely wrapped around her lithe body because Lauren can very clearly see the way Camila’s tan back dips invitingly down her spine as the edge of the towel lies carelessly just above the brunette’s ass. She really didn’t do a good job of drying her hair at all because clear beads of water are cascading down her skin, her auburn hair flowing down her back in wet, wavy locks, making her back glisten and inviting Lauren towards her even more.
Lauren doesn’t stand a chance against her body’s reactions as she suddenly finds herself taking steps towards Camila and standing a little bit to her left but still right behind her that there’s barely any space between their bodies. She steels her gaze against Camila’s through the mirror as she trails the tips of her fingers down Camila’s arm, watching as her movement leaves a trail of goose bumps and the brunette’s breath hitches at the back of her throat and she stutters out,
“L-Laur, what are you doing?” Camila whispers and she can’t find the willpower to look away from Lauren’s gaze.
Lauren keeps her eyes on Camila’s as she continues to move her fingers along the brunette’s arm holding her towel. She grasps Camila’s hand tightly and pulls both of their hands down, stripping Camila naked as she holds her gaze while Camila gasps, but doing nothing otherwise to stop whatever is happening. The dark-haired girl rests one hand on Camila’s hip and uses the other to gently move Camila’s hair to the side and over her shoulder. Lauren turns her head and sucks on Camila’s neck as the brunette keels forward and grabs onto the counter to steady herself. Her eyes shut in pleasure as Lauren grazes her tongue over Camila’s silky skin after biting it and the older girl moans as if she’s getting off of pleasuring Camila.
“I think it’s time we address this tension, don’t you?” Lauren husks out in her ear. The younger girl forces her eyes open and manages to barely get out,
“Are you su-,” she struggles to find her words when she feels Lauren’s hands roam her body as she buries her face in Camila’s neck and continues to absolutely devour her. “Is this what you really want?”
Lauren laughs, almost disbelievingly, then she turns her head back to the mirror and transfixes Camila’s gaze on her through the mirror,
“Eres divina, Camila,” she rasps while moving her hands to the underside of Camila’s boobs, lingering there with almost feathery-light touches before she moves them up and kneads the other girl’s breasts, causing Camila to inhale sharply and close her eyes. Lauren pinches her stiffening buds and says in a low voice, “Look at me, Camila.”
Camila’s whole body is aching and yearning for more of Lauren’s touch and she forces her eyes to meet Lauren’s again,
“Te deseo como no te imaginas,” Lauren whispers as she uses her hips to press herself into Camila, pushing the girl’s bare sex onto the cold counter, setting Camila’s nerves alight. Lauren’s hot breath in her ear and the girl’s warm hands on her body and everything that has led to this moment are almost enough to send Camila over the edge and she spins around abruptly, grabbing Lauren’s face and kissing her harshly as Lauren catches up and moves her hands around the younger girl’s waist, hoisting her on the counter while their eager tongues tousle with one another. They ravage each other’s mouths as their tongues swipe and delve into one another, while they exchange hot breaths, neither one wanting to pull away.
Camila’s hold on Lauren’s hair tightens as she feels the girl trap her bottom lip between her teeth and drag it out, the dark-haired girl immediately diving into her neck once she lets Camila’s lip go. Camila’s nerves are on overdrive and she’s breathing heavily as she leans backwards on her hands and tosses her head back in pleasure as Lauren puts her mouth around her left breast and sucks hard, hollowing her mouth and proceeding to nip on her hardened nipple. Lauren pulls back and marvels at the sight in front of her.
There is something so erotic about the fact that Lauren is still fully clothed while Camila is baring her stark naked body with her legs spread wide for Lauren to ravage. Camila’s eyes are shut tight, her swollen bottom lip, which has bite marks from both Lauren and Camila, are caught in between her teeth. She’s leaning on her hands with her chest heaving heavily as she arches her back so her perky boobs are splayed out in front of Lauren as a deep blush reddens Camila’s cheeks, neck, and chest. She looks absolutely wrecked in the most delicious way.
That night, Lauren gets what she’s been craving since seeing Camila for the first time and takes Camila over and over again until they’re too spent to move and Lauren is laying on top of the brunette, head in the crook of the younger girl’s neck, while Camila is rubbing her back soothingly and holding their sweat-slicked bodies together.
“That was like the best sex I’ve had in a while,” Lauren chuckles into Camila’s neck.
“You the best I ever had,” Camila starts singing Drake’s Best I Ever Had softly and Lauren lets out an endeared light laugh.
“You’re ridiculous,” Lauren says as she props herself on her elbows and hovers over Camila. They look into each other’s eyes softly and they know this is the start of something different for the both of them.
–
After they burst the bubble of tension that seems to have taken over every moment they spent together, Lauren and Camila seamlessly move into a relationship filled with easy smiles and good times and just pure, genuine feeling of being content with finally being together.
Things don’t get weird until three months later when Camila is getting ready to leave for work.
Lauren had moved into Camila’s place a week before when her lease ended. Paying half the rent of Camila’s apartment was about the same amount of money Lauren was spending at her own single apartment and she’s essentially moved into the brunette’s place anyway, her clothes already taking up half of the other girl’s closet.
Lauren’s morning class has been cancelled so she doesn’t need to leave the apartment until later, but Camila has to come in early to start on an experiment that will take her all day (and probably into the night) to finish.
Camila stuffs her mouth with a granola bar while rushing around the apartment, picking up her coat, keys, and bag as Lauren just watches her fondly from where she’s sat at the breakfast table. Camila is almost ready to go when she realizes she doesn’t see her glasses anywhere.
“Fuck,” Camila mutters as she looks around, “Where did I put my glasses?”
“On top of your head, love,” Lauren says without even looking up from where she’d dipped her head to drink the milk from her cereal bowl.
Camila rolls her eyes and pulls hers glasses down as she approaches Lauren.
“Thanks, baby,” Camila says as she grabs Lauren’s face with both of her hands and plants a deep kiss on her lips, “I love you, bye!”
Camila pulls back with wide eyes and sees that Lauren is mirroring her expression. She’s still holding Lauren’s face when she says “Um-, I mean,” Camila stutters. This is the first time either of them had said those words, even though Camila’s known for a while now that she does love Lauren. She just isn’t sure how deep Lauren’s feelings are for her so she had been keeping it to herself. Until now that is.
Then she lets go of Lauren’s face and makes a beeline for the door but the green-eyed girl grabs her arm lightly, “What did you just say,” she asks with an unreadable expression on her face.
“Um,” Camila says in a panicked voice, her eyes anywhere but on Lauren’s. “I said, ‘thank you!” and that’s it, I didn’t say anything after that,” she chuckles nervously. “I think you’re hearing things, you should get that checked out, Lo,” Camila says while pulling her arm away gently. “Well, would you look at the time!” she exclaims while examining her arm that does not have her watch, “I really gotta go, bye!”
Lauren watches her go with a confused but amused look in her eyes. She shakes her head and continues with her breakfast.
–
When Lauren comes in the lab later that day, she sees Camila for all of two seconds before the brunette not so subtly makes an abrupt turn and takes the far stairwell instead in an attempt to avoid the other girl. Lauren smiles to herself and proceeds to get her cleaning supplies ready.
About two hours later, Lauren is patiently waiting inside the lab room she knows Camila is working in while the other girl is in the bathroom. She sees Camila quietly enter the lab while looking behind her to see if the green-eyed girl is in the vicinity.
“Hey, baby,” Lauren says with a smirk.
“Shit!” Camila turns around with her hand on her heart, “You scared me, Lo! Why do you enjoy sneaking up on me?”
Lauren smiles and raises a perfectly-shaped her eyebrow, “Did you forget we work in the same place or something?”
Camila then realizes what’s happening and hurriedly says, “Oh well you know what, I actually have to go start this thing soon um-,”
“I can see that you’ve set a timer for an hour, Camz,” Lauren says, pointing to the timer attached to the bench top that currently has about 50 minutes left on it. “You have nothing to do for another hour.”
Camila crosses her arms and gives up her efforts to avoid the other girl, “Okay, fine. What do you want?” she asks, keeping her gaze on the floor while shuffling on her feet slightly.
Lauren approaches her so she’s right in front of Camila and ducks her head to try to get Camila to look at her, “You know what I want” she says straightening up when Camila briefly meets her gaze.
Camila sighs resignedly and says,
“I’m sorry,” in the same instant Lauren lets out an “I love you too.”
“Wait, what?!” they exclaim at the same time.
“What are you sorry for?” Lauren asks hesitantly.
“Um, for saying ‘I love you?’” Camila says unsurely, scratching the back of her neck.
“Did you not mean it?” Lauren probes with a hint of sadness in her voice and her eyes scanning Camila’s face worriedly.
“NO!” Camila exclaims loudly. “I mean yes. I mean - ugh!” she says exasperatedly. “It’s not that, of course I mean it,” she says more quietly. “I just wasn’t sure if you were ready to hear that yet, but yeah, I do love you,” Camila finishes, finally meeting Lauren’s eyes with sincerity and adoration and love pouring out of her brown eyes.
Lauren further closes the distance between them and places her arms around Camila’s waist while the brunette instinctively wraps her own arms around Lauren’s neck, instantly playing with the small hairs on the nape of her neck.
“Oh baby, never apologize for letting me know you love me ever again,” Lauren whispers against the other girl’s mouth.
Camila smiles widely, her eyes crinkling and her tongue barely poking out between her teeth, “Sooo, you love me too, huh?” she says, eyes expectant and heart hammering against her chest. She’s pretty sure she can feel Lauren’s own heart trying to jump out of her chest, letting her know that despite Lauren’s ever calm and collected façade, she has the same effect on the green-eyed girl.
“Well if you hadn’t run like your life depended on it this morning and then proceeded to avoid me all night, you would have known much earlier,” Lauren teases her.
“I love you,” Camila says while keeping her gaze on Lauren’s eyes.
“I love you too, baby,” Lauren returns with a smile. She leans her head forward and captures Camila’s bottom lip in between her own and their kiss turns heated in no time.
Lauren pulls back with dark eyes and swollen lips and looks behind Camila at the bench top before she brings her gaze back to Camila’s lips and rasps out, “There’s about 40 minutes left on your timer. What do you suppose we could do to fill that time?”
There’s a glimmer in Camila’s eye when she leans forward and whispers, her breath hot against Lauren’s ear, “I can think of a few things.”

Chapter 2—Friend or Foe?
Prompt: History
I—Scrutiny
The interview did not go at all as Lucy expected. For one thing, it was a great deal more informal than any interview she'd ever had for a job (other than one for a paper route that her father wouldn't let her keep). The real shock, however, was finding out that the law firm of Makarov & Vermilion—known to lawyers as Fairy Tail—had a history with her family.
The room was more or less what she had envisioned—corporate-Fiore standard boardroom with an oval table, big comfortable chairs, and fully updated with the newest in lacrima technology. The artwork was a little unusual, and appeared to have been contributed by various members of the firm, since there wasn't any cohesion or similarity between the pieces that she could make out. Lucy couldn't help but glance at Natsu when her eyes caught what appeared to be an original Star Wars movie poster in all its kitschy, late- seventies glory, mounted in a place of honour on one wall. Natsu gave her two thumbs up, apparently aware of her interest—in the poster—and Lucy found herself smiling.
"That's the slightly more common version, of course," he stage whispered to her as she sat down in her designated spot. "But I have the Type A poster at home."
Lucy had no idea what he was talking about; apparently Natsu was an even bigger geek than she was. Also… was that a pick-up line? Gray either shared her concern or saw her expression. He punched Natsu none-too-lightly on the shoulder.
"Seriously, Pepto B? Lucy's here for a job interview and you sound like some kind of nerdy pick-up artist."
"What the hell, Gray?! I just thought she'd like to know—I mean she can recognize an Imperial Destroyer-class capital ship when she sees one!"
"So could anyone who's known you for at least five minutes," argued Gray, unconsciously pushing back his sleeves. His pale blue shirt was now unbuttoned most of the way down his chest, revealing a stylized silver sword on a matching chain around his neck—and some very nice muscle, and part of a dark blue tattoo.
Lucy saw Erza Scarlet, the firm's youngest-ever managing partner start to tense at the childish behaviour. She leaned forward, but Makarov Dreyar, the firm's senior partner, shook his head at her slightly, and Ms. Scarlet sighed but didn't intervene. Lucy wondered just how often this kind of thing went on around Fairy Tail. Were they at least more professional around clients? And did their lead forensic specialist really need to show off his chest like that? Lucy found herself looking back at Natsu in the hope that maybe this was a common habit for Fairy Tail guys. Hope?! Did I really just think that? Ugh! This is getting out of hand.
Ignoring Ms. Scarlet's glare, Natsu poked Gray in the chest with a forefinger. It didn't look like much, but Gray almost fell out of his chair.
"Hah!" crowed Natsu. "Shows what you know, Stripper! Lucy hadn't known me for five minutes yet!" He beamed at Lucy, who once again felt like a deer caught in particularly attractive headlights. She scrambled to get her wits together, her task made harder as Natsu reached up and loosened his tie and unbuttoned his collar. Mercifully, he stopped with just one button.
"… I guess not," she ventured. "At least, I know it wasn't for very long."
Gray leaned forward toward Natsu with a predatory smirk. "Thought so. You didn't go fetch Lucy like you were supposed to, did you? I'll bet you ran home to let Plue out, set Happy to keep an eye on him, and then—let's see—you had to rush back here because you can't stand riding the subway. You know, I thought it was strange that Lucy got caught in the rain."
Lucy felt a blush starting—why had she lied to cover up for Natsu? Then she discovered that nobody else seemed especially upset, although Ms. Scarlet was obviously irritated.
"And which great detective are you today, Ice Cube Brain, Poirot or Holmes?" Natsu rolled his eyes. "I mean for crying out loud, Ice Princess, don't you—"
"That's enough!" Ms. Scarlet's hand smacked the table, and Lucy jumped right along with the guys. "Natsu—we'll have to have another chat about your billable hours later today. Gray, put your shirt back on and stop baiting Natsu."
Wait, what? Lucy stared at Gray, whose expensive broadcloth shirt was hanging neatly over the back of his chair. What the hell?
Okay, so the lawyers at M&V were a little… unusual. Lucy had already known that in advance. She'd done her research—and seen the news stories—so she'd been aware that Makarov Dreyar was extremely short and tended to conduct business sitting cross-legged on top of tables, podiums, bars, and—in one very famous case—the back of a client's expensive and extremely explicit Greek statue of three lovers.
Mr. Makarov had argued that as the statue was a perfectly functional chair, and as there were no obscenity by-laws regarding lawn furniture, the City of Magnolia had no right to either fine his client or force him to remove the object from his front lawn. He'd lost the case, but it had made his law firm known to most of Fiore by the time it was over. On top of that, the client had reputedly been pleased that he and his statue had been on the news for the better part of two months. It had allegedly doubled the client's business, which Lucy preferred to not think about too hard.
Lucy had also been prepared for Erza Scarlet to be a gorgeous redhead who was not much older than she was. Ms. Scarlet was known equally for her uncompromising courtroom tactics and her custom-designed suits, which had a strange tendency toward colorful bows and thematic patterns that she claimed were related to her cases. Three years ago, journalist Jason Khol had commented that if Erza Scarlet ever showed up for court in a regular black or navy suit, he'd know for sure to leave immediately; the case would either be boring or leave people dead. He had also reported that the lawyer's one weakness was strawberry torte with real whipped cream. Looking across at the giant portrait of a piece of cake so deliciously realistic that Lucy's mouth immediately began to water, Lucy concluded that the information might have been more accurate that Jason's usual offerings.
She was called back to the present when Ms. Scarlet cleared her throat and thanked Lucy for coming to the interview. Lucy almost hugged her for saying something so normal.
"I'm very happy to be here," she began.
"Well, that's just it," interrupted Makarov. "You see, we've had our eyes on you for some time, but since we're all very much like family here, we had to make sure that you weren't just applying for a position in order to spy for your father."
Lucy froze in place. This was actually worse than she'd expected. She'd become more or less inured to being courted for her family's wealth and connections, but she'd never ceased to be hurt on the rare occasions that she'd been met with grim scorn or open hostility because of her family's "opportunistic" business practices.
"Oi, gramps!" Lucy blinked in surprise. It sounded like Natsu was—angry?—on her behalf. Sure enough, the pink-haired securities lawyer waded in with total disregard for rank or protocol. "You didn't have to put it like that! Besides, it's perfectly obvious that she's not here to spy for Old No-Heart Heartfilia!"
No-Heart Heartfilia. Yes, that's what they called him—the nebulous "they" being almost anyone from whom he'd ever wanted something.
Lucy looked up when a heavy arm dropped around her shoulders and squeezed. She automatically noticed the high-quality wool of the suit and the fine linen of the shirt cuff. She'd been raised to notice things like that in the same way that others noticed hair and eye colour. Still a little in shock at the unexpected—well, not attack exactly, but close—she mused that she didn't like Natsu's cuff links and would have to choose him a new pair. That thought brought her out of her daze. What was it with him that made her think things like that? He smells good, her nose suggested. She didn't recognize the soap, so it was probably an off-brand—something he'd picked up for himself—but there was a hint of pine and fresh wood smoke that was both very odd and somehow comforting.
"I have to agree with Pinky, jiji." To Lucy's surprise, that was Gray's cool, rather deep voice, and it sounded like he was on her side too. "Lucy lied like a champ for Natsu and—as we've heard—she barely knew him. Not just that, but I'm pretty sure she didn't know he was a partner, so I doubt she was looking to buy favours." Gray must have moved closer, because she heard him murmur sotto voce: "Waste of time with Natsu anyway…"
Lucy looked up at Mr. Makarov, who seemed to be frowning at her. All at once she realized that Natsu was still hugging her. It was nice, but she preferred to stand on her own two feet, metaphorically speaking.
"Um, Natsu?"
"Natsu—personal space?" Erza's voice sounded slightly weary; no doubt they'd had this conversation before.
"Yeah, Natsu, she hasn't accepted your offer to come see your Type A Star Wars poster yet you know." Sure enough, Gray was right behind her.
"Gray—put your shirt back on."
"Oh—sure thing Erza."
Gray's presence disappeared from behind her and at the same time the warmth around her shoulders vanished. She felt surprisingly disappointed, but persevered.
"Mr. Makarov—Ms. Scarlet—is this still an interview for a job? Or am I here because you're angry with my father?"
"Hmmm, well, I wouldn't say I was ever angry with you, Ms. Heartfilia. It's just that your father has a way of hurting people when he doesn't get his own way, so I am… protective."
Lucy stood up, pleased to find that she was fully in control of herself and her voice again.
"There is nobody who understands my father's nature better than I do," she said in a clipped voice. "Am I here for a job? Or a trial?"
Mr. Makarov smiled at her, and to Lucy's surprise, his smile had quite a bit of the same elusive, sunny charm as Natsu's.
"Actually, if Gray and Natsu hadn't jumped in so quickly, I would have explained that although we were concerned about your motives for seeking employment here, we've already determined that you're just the kind of person we want here—and the right person to make sure that past history stays in the past."
"Oh." Lucy suddenly felt deflated. Then her normal good spirits—which had somehow survived her father's rule after her mother's death—started to bubble back to the surface. "Um, Mr. Makarov?"
"Yes?"
"Does this mean I'm hired?"
"If you want the position, it's yours."
Lucy nodded firmly. "Absolutely. I've dreamed of working here."
"Awesome!" That was Natsu, and he was grinning even more brightly than before.
"Welcome to Fairy Tail," said Gray, who still hadn't put his shirt back on. He offered Lucy a slight smile—the first she'd seen other than when he'd been laughing at Natsu.
"We're very happy to have you here," put in Erza. "Please, just call me Erza. If you have some time now, we can do up the proper contracts and so on."
"And discuss billable hours," muttered Natsu.
"Nonsense, she's a summer student," Erza told him sharply. "You on the other hand…"
"Right—got it! And, uh, I've got to get going… are we done here? I mean, gramps has a beer out now and all…"
Sure enough, Mr. Makarov was drinking placidly from a giant beer stein. Where had that come from?
"Fine. Go." Erza shook her head as Natsu rushed off. "That boy… brilliant, of course, but not focussed."
"He's young," murmured Erza's boss—to the extent that she had one. She started to nod in agreement, when Makarov added, "So are you, of course."
"Well then, time to wrap this up," said Gray. He was looking impatient, but was too polite to simply leave.
Just then, Natsu stuck his head in at the door.
"Lucy! I forgot! I'll walk you home, okay? Also—don't let Gray convince you to try out for the hockey team and don't let Erza talk you into putting on a musical. See you in a couple of hours!"
The pink hair vanished as quickly as it had come.
"Musical?" Lucy asked, puzzled.
"Oh yes!" replied Erza, suddenly looking much less severe and considerably younger. "I happened to notice on your résumé that you've done some amateur theatricals, and…"
Lucy heard a snicker from Gray; he patted her on the shoulder on his way out, careful not to interrupt Erza's excited description of the potential for the first ever Fairy Tail musical operetta. Seated to Erza's right, on the conference table, Lucy saw Mr. Makarov smile into his beer.
II—Not Alone
"So, how was your first day?"
Lucy looked sideways at Natsu, who looked cheerfully unrepentant about leaving work early. He'd told her that he'd probably go back later. Unless she wanted to see the poster today, of course. Lucy had declined, citing fatigue and a need to find a place to live in the city now that she could more or less afford to pay rent.
"Well, I didn't really do any work… I mean, I still have end of year exams to go before I can work full-time for the rest of the summer."
Natsu gave her a knowing look.
"I'll bet Erza talked you into the musical."
"True. But she agreed that it might be better to consider a play to start."
"Heh. She wants Gray to sing—he's a dork, but he's got a good voice. He's usually willing to go along with stuff, but he's put his foot down on the singing." Natsu paused, considering. "So far."
"I know exactly what you mean," Lucy told him with considerable feeling. "Erza's amazing, and she's been my idol for the last two years, but she's really… intense."
"Accurate," Natsu agreed. Despite the beautiful clothes, Lucy was starting to believe that he really wasn't much older than she was.
They walked along for a few more minutes, chatting and laughing with surprising ease, when Natsu stopped abruptly and looked toward a park about a half-block away.
"Come on," he said. "I've got to get Happy and Plue."
Bemused, and amazed that she was going with him despite her skirt and heels—she'd ditched the stockings and not bothered with her spare pair—Lucy trailed along behind Natsu. When they reached the park, the white dog and blue-grey cat came trotting up. At Natsu's request, Lucy carefully squatted down in her tight skirt to pet the dog. He was an adorable little thing, with short, velvety fur and dark, expressive eyes.
"So his owner is away?" Lucy asked.
"Yeah… Well, kinda." Natsu shifted from foot-to-foot, his cat Happy in the crook of one arm. "Actually, they're not coming back. But I didn't want Plue to go to just anyone, so I took him in. The building doesn't allow dogs, but I'm planning to get my own place soon anyway, so I thought—why not?"
There was obviously some kind of story there—more old history?—but for some reason, Lucy didn't feel the need to find out about it the way she usually did. She liked the dog—more of a puppy, really—and for some reason, she liked the man. She smiled when it occurred to her that Natsu seemed like a bit of a puppy himself at times. Corporate law shark he might be, but she hadn't seen it so far. She might feel differently once they'd worked together for a while, of course.
A hand reached down, and Natsu helped her to her feet. He seemed a little abstracted, so Lucy gave him his space. Or tried to, anyway. He appeared to like walking close to her, and—again, she wasn't sure why—it didn't bother her.
"How about I give you a hand with finding an apartment?" Natsu asked, after several minutes of silence.
Lucy stopped, since they were about to head down into the subway station, and it would be next-to-impossible to chat down there, given the noise and people. She was surprised by the offer—but not really.
"You don't mind?" She hesitated, and then said bluntly, "The thing is that I'm going to have to do a fair bit of looking. It's got to be nice enough to be comfortable, but not too expensive—although I've got some money saved up, which will help. But the big thing is that my dad's going to be really upset. So I need to look without him knowing."
Natsu nodded, obviously thinking. "So you're running away then?"
"Pretty much. But I've still got a year of school to go so… I don't know exactly how it will work out."
Her companion studied her face and then smiled reassuringly. "We'll make it happen—no problem! You're not on your own now, you know?"
An odd lump rose in Lucy's throat, and she hastily blinked away tears.
"Yeah. Thanks, Natsu."
"There is one thing, though."
"What?" Lucy could feel her original wariness return.
"I really hate subways. Worse than anything." He looked embarrassed and ran a hand through his pink hair.
"Oh. I see the problem." Lucy pulled herself out of her unproductive thoughts. She smiled at Natsu. "I think I can make it home from here on my own, to be honest. Besides, Erza will be happier with you if you head back to work, won't she?"
"Yeah… After I drop off these two, anyway." He seemed a little disappointed, and Lucy hoped it was because he was sorry she had to go. "Well, maybe you can come by on the weekend? Hang out with me and these guys?" His head indicated the cat and the dog.
Lucy didn't know what to say. She wanted to say yes, but it was ridiculous to trust a guy that she barely knew.
"Aren't you going to be working?" she temporized.
"Probably not; there's nothing big in the works for a couple more weeks. Actually, that's the thing—I don't always have a ton of free time, but this weekend's good. That's how it goes in my practice area—you're either working flat out or not too much. I don't mind it. But I want to help you find a place, so…"
"Well, okay then." Lucy gave in and decided to go for it. She couldn't tell if the guy was just being nice—very nice—or whether he was asking her out in a very, very circuitous way. It was impossible to tell. At the very least, he seemed to want to spend time with her. She definitely wanted to spend time with him, although she couldn't quite explain why. She felt less alone than she had in years.
Natsu was frowning again, but he grinned at her response. "Great! Okay, let's exchange numbers"—they each pulled out their communications lacrima—"and we'll aim for early Saturday afternoon. Good?"
"Works for me."
"Also, if you ever just want to come over and study, I can probably help. Gray's not too shabby either, though I wouldn't tell him that."
"Such fulsome praise!"
"I know, right?" Another blinding grin.
"See you on Saturday, Natsu!"
"Bye Lucy! Don't trip in the turnstile this time!"
Lucy opened her mouth to protest—it was Happy and Plue that had tripped her up—but Natsu was already jogging away. She suspected he was laughing.

A/Note: So, this chapter ended up three times longer than planned—mind you, I'm using the term "planned" in a very general kind of way.  I hope you enjoyed it! I'll probably do one more to wrap up Fluff Week. The story needs at least a kiss and definitely some cuddle time... but what do I know?
As always, your reviews and comments are very much appreciated! You'd be surprised how encouraging it is to know that people look forward to reading your work. :)
Confession time ~ I do have a law degree and practiced law in a large firm for just over two years after finishing law school. I practice law in Canada, which means primarily "common law" - that is, law based on both legislation and the decisions of the courts. The US, and most former British colonies, are also common law jurisdictions. The system is different in  "civil law" jurisdictions, such as QuÊbec (in Canada) and most of Europe.

A Day in the Life: Harvard Law School Student
Tumblr media
(brilliant song) – hello i am Heather, i am a 1L at Harvard legislation university, and i also went to Harvard university as an undergrad. (relax music) So modern-day a little bit bit unique, I almost always have category at eight:20 but today i have just a little little bit of time earlier than torts at 9:50. Most likely i’m going to get up somewhat early, review my readings, perhaps do a couple chores. After which around lunchtime i will meet up with a couple individuals in my part for be trained staff, to move over some issues for civil process. Then i have just a little bit of time to head to the library with my buddies and do some reading before my property class. And then tonight, one among my buddies in my section it’s her birthday, so we’re all gonna go out to the campus bar and exhibit her a good time. (chill track) – Why legislation school? – I’ve always wanted to get into civil rights law, i’m not utterly sure what that looks like, confidently work for the ACLU, or division of Justice at some point, but absolutely fascinated with the general public curiosity route.- whilst you had been an undergrad at Harvard did you know the whole time that you simply desired to go into legislation college? – I did, I did be aware of I desired to do it. Ever because I was a kid I wanted to be a lawyer however I did take some years off to ensure that is fairly what I wanted to do. There may be a enormous change between seeing something in a movie, and what it is like in actual life. So I took two years to work as a guide for Booz Allen Hamilton in D.C, which was a first-class experience.I shriveled at division of Justice which made me particularly realise I desired to be a legal professional. So it all labored out ultimately. – What type of work had been you doing at Booz Allen? – I used to be without a doubt contracting with the division of Justice’s government place of work for immigration review, so it’s the immigration court method of the united states. – So you might have only now been at regulation school for two weeks? – yes. – What has the transition been like? – it can be style of been trial by hearth, but in a good way. It’s concurrently being forced to be an grownup and being stuck in kindergarten everywhere once more. You get fairly nearly the humans on your part on the grounds that you spend 20 hours per week at school with the equal people, sitting within the same seats. However it’s just been a particularly wild experience, and the possibilities here are just beyond possible, it can be robust. – Why did you choose Harvard regulation in certain? – well I had a relatively powerful attachment to Harvard undergrad, the place we went collectively (laughs). I relatively benefit from the campus, I notion Harvard had all these wonderful opportunities. Exceptionally pass-finding out with the opposite departments and the other faculties right here. Harvard legislation’s additionally obtained unparalleled status. The giant measurement of the category allows for you to get to understand men and women from a style of distinctive backgrounds. You name it like race, gender, ethnicity, political stances, you have got obtained ’em all in bucketloads right here, which is the first-rate part of getting an schooling here. – pleasant, so what does your path load look like proper now? – So in 1L 12 months you have got set path load, so everybody takes the same classes. You may have bought your home, your torts, your contracts, that sort of thing. So we’ve five classes in the fall that we’re all taking together, the eighty of us in one part. Even as the opposite sections will take five lessons that may not be the same, but at the finish of the year we will be able to have all taken the equal classes collectively. So it’s the 200th anniversary of HLS, and my first week of school right here the Dean definitely committed this plaque to the enslaved humans whose labor generated the wealth to located the regulation college. So I suppose it was very significant to kick off the 200th year anniversary occasion to commemorate the slaves owned by the royal family, who endowed the primary 12 months right here at Harvard legislation. (kick back song) – How is a law study room run in perhaps another manner than an undergrad type that you’ve got been in? – correct, so in undergrad traditionally you have very enthusiastic individuals put up their fingers to answer questions, it is the complete opposite in regulation college, you do not need to be asked a question. We have a bloodless-calling procedure based on the case system, so most of our lessons will learn Supreme court decisions, or other court decisions, and then a professor will ask a individual or a number of men and women to, what we call temporary a case. So they’ll ask us like what are the details of the case, what’s the legal question right here, how did the court preserve. So every person does the reading, however you style of financial institution on being the seventy nine out of eighty who is not going to get bloodless-referred to as that day. – ok gotcha, have you ever been cold-known as but? – sure, i have been cold-known as in I suppose every single category and whenever it was a thrill (laughs).- A thrill, enjoyable, enjoyable. I suppose, would you have any recommendation for any individual going into legislation school, who perhaps intimidated by means of that form of thing? – No, I think it’s very frightening the first time, after which I suppose the primary time you truely mess up, and also you have an understanding of that no one on your classification remembers you messed up, because they had been too busy freaking out about not being cold-called, that’s whilst you stop taking it too seriously and also you just understand that it is a nice solution to be taught, there may be a rationale why they do it, it makes you read carefully, makes you pay awareness at school.I clearly opt for it to the way in which we studied at undergrad. – great, first-rate. What advice would you might have for anyone who’s not certain if they want to follow to regulation institution or not? – i might say you must really, relatively be definite. If you’re not sure in any respect, perhaps you is not doing it earlier than you talk to different men and women who’re at regulation institution. Legislation university is particularly high-priced, the debt will also be overwhelming, and if you’re no longer definite in case you wanna be a lawyer, i’m now not sure if that debt is valued at assignment. It’s an awfully depressing reply, but the economic fact is that you simply must be sure earlier than you commit, and if you are no longer sure, read a couple law books, watch a pair movies, talk to your associates, talk to your college regulation school councilor, speak to humans that you understand who are presently in legislation institution and see what they feel after the fact. However be sure before you apply, considering that it’s no longer valued at the cash if you are not definite. – don’t go to law tuition for the sake of going to regulation tuition. (slow tune) What sort of thing do you do external of class at Harvard regulation? – (laughs) what’s outside of sophistication at Harvard regulation? I am kidding, there is absolutely quite a bit to do. Every lunch there may be most commonly some kind of occasion, I suppose final week they had an occasion hosted via the federalist society about whether or not or no longer persons must be obligated to bake cakes for gay couples who’re getting married. So companies will carry in speakers, distinguished speakers from across the nation, for lunchtime sort events. Then there is also a entire style of social events hosted with the aid of HL relevant, which is like the party organization it seems like on campus, or the scholar practice organizations, or the affiliation agencies. So the Asian-Pacific Islander team will host a pleased hour, or the LGBT group will host a board sport night. So there is quite a lot of matters on campus to do that don’t seem to be type related. And then there may be of course simply general hanging around Cambridge, it can be an effective town. There’s a quality nightlife, great areas to simply get espresso or get a drink, some thing’s your sort. So yeah there is a lot to do. So once I was once an undergrad I felt obligated to become a member of a number of extracurriculars, and so I felt like I break up my time 50/50, if not swinging extra toward extracurricular events than school room. Whereas at law institution, certainly as a 1L, you are expected to devote the great majority of your time to your reading, in view that there may be quite a few it. And i honestly recognize that much more, it puts various, it takes off plenty of strain to do quite a lot of these extracurriculars. Additionally soldiering through the readings with the identical eighty individuals together type of bonds you collectively in a technique that in undergrad was extraordinary considering you were all taking distinct classes, regularly you felt just a little bit by myself. It can be not the case in regulation college. – What was once the application approach like for you, from undergrad to legislation college? – correct so, after you graduate, you have got to take the LSAT if you have not already. This used to be the legislation tuition Admissions experiment. It’s scored out of 180, you need to sit it to post a law school application. That experiment is weighed very heavily to your legislation university software, so you have to do lovely well in it.Then you definately send in a resume as well as a number of letters of recommendation, and an essay. And that’s mostly it, there without a doubt is not that much more to it, however I consider finding out for the examination is what stresses people out essentially the most. – What sort of advice would you supply someone who perhaps going through that utility procedure? – i’d say my largest piece of recommendation is that you will have to quite think rough before you take a seat the LSAT, if you are prepared for it. You shouldn’t do what I did and rush taking an exam that you’re not prepared for, in view that you can’t cancel your score and resitting the examination is various work. And on top of that, lots of legislation colleges do appear at both ratings and so they either do not usual them out or they take the lowest rating, that variety of thing. So i might say be very, very definite of yourself earlier than you stroll into the examination room. And even though you suppose reasonably unprepared, you mustn’t take it and just look ahead to the subsequent new release. – correct, and so that you mentioned you wanna emerge as going into civil rights legislation, some thing with the ACLU, whatever alongside these strains. What is going to the following couple years appear like, i guess external of the tutorial yr in terms of pursuing that do you believe? – Do you imply like summer internships, or– – Yeah, summer time internships that variety of, yeah. – correct so, truthfully i have never given it too much proposal yet. It’s a nationwide coverage truely that 1Ls can’t follow to summer season internships unless December 1st.So that’s throughout all legislation schools and all corporations in the country. So it does offer you some breathing room, however when December 1st comes i am considering of applying to GLAAD or other LGBT related causes just like the ACLU LGBT place of job, or to human rights crusade. I believe that’s on the whole the place i am heading on my first summer, fingers crossed. But that is means down the road. – correct, okay. (relaxing song) – well I feel a number of movies, whether or not it can be Legally Blonde or Paper Chase, and even like Cousin Vinny, sort of impressed upon me that Harvard legislation college be very aggressive and cutthroat, and that’s simply most likely no longer the case.At least my section is relatively collaborative, relatively fun, we ship notes to one another, outlines, we send locations of free food to one another over our team chat. – gigantic. – yes, massive, gigantic and tremendous. And all of that’s main to me as a individual, primarily the meals bit. I believe the geniality and the camaraderie has relatively amazed me more than whatever else. (chill tune) when you enjoyed this video and you wanna be trained more about top faculties, don’t forget to subscribe. .

[Orin Kerr] Taking the Bar Exam as a 46-Year-Old Law Professor
A lot of recent law school graduates are going to be taking the bar exam in less than two weeks. I can relate. I took the bar exam just last summer, twenty years after I took it the first time. Here's what happened, together with some possible lessons about the experience.
I. Why Take the Bar Exam?
I'll start with the obvious question: Why? I took the exam because of a job change. I accepted a teaching job last June to start teaching at the University of Southern California in January 2018. You don't need to be a bar member to teach law. But I do occasional part-time legal work in addition to teaching. I wanted to keep that up when I moved to California, so I wanted to join the California bar.
But there was a complication: California rejects bar reciprocity with other states. I passed the New Jersey bar exam in 1997, after I graduated from law school. I later waived in to the District of Columbia. But California doesn't let out-of-state lawyers waive in. If you want to practice law in California, you have to take and pass the California bar exam.
One way out of taking the bar would have been to rely on the federal practice exception. Technically, state bars can't really regulate purely federal law practice in their states. If you're a member of the United States Supreme Court bar, for example, in theory you could go to any state and maintain a U.S. Supreme Court practice there without needing a state bar membership. But the federal practice exception is surprisngly murky in scope when you get down to the details. And I didn't want to rely on it given even just the theoretical risk that it might expose me to unauthorized practice of law claims. So I decided to sit for the California bar, which was coming up in less than two months after I signed up to join USC.
II. What's On The California Bar Exam?
The California Bar exam is known to be pretty difficult. Part of that is because it has a lot of topics. The topics include:
Constitutional Law
Contracts (Common Law and Uniform Commercial Code)
Criminal Law
Criminal Procedure
Evidence (Federal)
Evidence (California Evidence Code)
Real Property
Torts
Wills
Trusts
Civil Procedure (Federal)
Civil Procedure (California)
Community Property (California law)
Professional Responsibility (ABA Rules)
Professional Responsibility (California Rules)
Agency Law
Partnership Law
Corporations
Remedies
California has in the past had a three-day bar exam, but that has recently changed: The exam is now two days. The sort-of good news is that I was able to take an additionally shortened exam, the Attorney's Exam, that California permits for lawyers who have been practicing elsewhere for a few years. The Attorney's Exam is just one (very long) day. It's the regular written essay exam minus the multiple choice Multistate Bar Exam. You show up for the first day and take the essays, and you don't have to take the second day that is the multiple choice part.
At first blush it seemed like a blessing to be able to take the Attorney's Exam. I didn't have to suffer through a second day of testing. And I was flying out to California to take the exam, so I could get back home to DC more quickly. Over time, though, I came to think the Attorney's Exam is actually harder to study for than the regular exam. The multiple choice Multistate Bar Exam only covers seven topics that are 1L and core subjects. Knowing that lets you focus your efforts; you know you'll be tested on those subjects. In contrast, the essay exam draws from all of the topics, and the only subject that always appears is something on Professional Responsibility. That meant you had to spread your efforts out widely, as you mostly had no idea which of the many topics might be tested.
III. How Did I Study?
I didn't need help with Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure. Constitutional Law wasn't going to be too hard for me, either, and I had taught federal Evidence Law a few years back and could dust that off pretty easily. But I had never studied a bunch of the topics on the bar exam. Subjects like Trusts, Partnership, Wills, California Community Property Law, California Civil Procedure, and California Evidence were all new to me. And although I had once studied 1L subjects like Property and Contracts, that was over twenty years ago. I didn't remember very much. I needed some bar prep help.
So I took Bar/Bri. Yup, just like old times. I had taken it in 1997, and I became a repeat customer last summer. Fortunately all the lectures were online through the Bar/Bri website, so I didn't have to show up in person and see my former students in bar prep class. I found myself watching Bar/Bri videos, sometimes taught by professors I knew or knew of, while filling in the big lecture notes books they give you. It was a strange experience.
I found Bar/Bri pretty effective in 1997. But I confess I found it underwhelming in 2017. Part of that may have been that I was a nontraditional student the second time around. For understandable reasons, they don't pitch bar prep classes to professors. Recent law grads usually have been exposed to most of the topics on the bar relatively recently; they often need mostly refreshers of stuff they have more or less seen within the last two years. Professors twenty years out are in a different place. We know an insane amount about a few topics, but next to nothing about others. So I needed to learn a bunch of subjects from scratch and to do it quickly.
I found the Bar/Bri materials an inefficient way to do that because the rules were presented without context. For me, at least, the fastest way to learn a new area of law is to first learn what the law is trying to do. Most fields of law are trying to achieve some goals or balance some interests in a way that you can state in a sentence or two. Once you know the goals of the law, you can understand the rules in that field as an effort to achieve the goals. It becomes a lot easier to learn the rules because they tend to fit the goals. My frustration with Bar/Bri is that the rules were not given any purpose. The rules were just rules, hundreds or thousands of rules to memorize, presented rule after rule after rule. It was something like memorizing Pi to a thousand places. It may have been a good fit for students who have recently taken classes in related subjects. But from my odd perspective, at least, it was frustrating.
IV: How Stressful Was It?
I was interested to see, when I signed up to take the bar, if it would be as stressful as it had been the first time. When I was a student, way back when, I didn't test lightly. I would go all out, being super-stressed for weeks. So I wondered if taking the bar exam a second time would be a lot easier and less intense twenty years later.
I wish I could say I was pretty chill about the whole thing. But nope, I wasn't. Yup, it was just as stressful in 2017 as it had been in 1997. I had more or less set aside about four weeks to study for the exam, and that meant about two days for each subject. I tried to spend roughly one day learning the basics of each subject, and then one day just memorizing the rules for that subject. But it was hard, and stressful, just as it had been right after law school.
Part of the problem was that intense memorization seemed so foreign. I wasn't worried about writing a nice lawyerly answer if I knew the rules. But studying meant trying to memorize a few hundred rules about random subjects I would never need. My middle-aged brain didn't take kindly to that. In my world, you pretty much never need to memorize anything. You can always consult your notes. Getting back into the memorization mindset after two decades off was harder than I expected.
Granted, I had the luxury that I didn't actually need to pass for my job. Most professors are not members of the state bars where they teach. So no worry if I failed, right? Well, yes and no. A lot of people were quick to remind me that former Stanford Law Dean Kathleen Sullivan had failed the California bar the first time. Many remembered that about her despite her brilliant academic and professional career. (I could see how it happened, too; if you don't spend enough time memorizing the silly rules you know you won't need IRL, you're unlikely to pass.) I could just imagine showing up at a new law school known among students only for an Above the Law headline, This Law Professor Can't Even Pass the Bar! So while I didn't need to pass the bar, I also kinda did.
V. Taking The Exam Itself
The actual process of taken exam was pretty similar to what it had been in 1997. The biggest difference was that in 1997, you either wrote your essays by hand (as I did) or you used a typewiter. By 2017, the standard was to use laptops, and that meant getting used to the ExamSoft software. As luck would have it, my laptop froze about 10 minutes into the exam. I was able to get back up and running without losing much time, though, and fortunately it didn't freeze up again.
The exam itself went fine. It was strange to be back in the position of legal exam taker instead of legal exam writer and legal exam grader. But I figured that was sort of an advantage, too. When I wasn't sure about a rule, I knew from experience how to write an answer that best obfuscated my lack of knowledge by burying it in a sea of otherwise-seemingly informed and intelligent words.
It didn't hurt that the last question, worth 25% of the exam grade, was a Fourth Amendment question. In the problem, you are a defense attorney and you are writing a letter to an AUSA about why he shouldn't bring a case in light of a Fourth Amendment violation you articulate your letter. They give you a fake Fourth Amendment opinion to rely on as precedent in your letter. I had to laugh when I saw the opinion, as I remembered reading the circuit court decision on which the fake opinion was loosely based.
VI. Reflections on the Experience
Happily, I passed. So the story has a happy ending. But we law professors like to make everything a learning experience, so here are some possible lessons I take from the experience.
(a) The California Bar Authorities Should Allow Reciprocity. It seems silly to not permit any reciprocity with lawyers who are practicing in other states. It would be fair to require experienced lawyers from other states to take a CLE course on a few specific areas of California law that may be particularly important. But not allowing any reciprocity with other states seems like pure protectionism. It's just trying to help California lawyers by making it hard for other lawyers to move here. I get that everything is overregulated in California. But it's still lame.
(b) There Are Too Many Topics on the California Bar Exam. I think the primary role of a bar exam is to require a certain amount of lawyerly competence. If that's right, I don't see why the bar exam requires learning so many topics. You just memorize some rules in case they show up, and then you forget all of them immediately after. I don't see the point in having so many different topics on the exam. It's not like you can test lawyerly competence among twenty topics any better than with ten topics. It just requires more time memorizing, and it's not obvious what that has to do with lawyerly ability.
(c) The Exam Should Be Better Run. The administration of the test on exam day left a lot to be desired. We were required to show up at 8am, but it took about two hours after that for the exam to actually start. There was only a 45-minute break for lunch, and then we had to come back to the exam room where we waited another hour or so to start the afternoon part. We didn't finish until 7pm. Maybe I'm just impatient in my old age, but I don't see why a 6.5 hour exam has to take 11 hours to administer.
(d) On Test Day, Don't Wear School-Related Clothing. The bar exam brings together people from all walks of life. Some people attended schools where the bar passage rates are very high, and others went to schools where it is not. Given the stress of exam day, don't wear clothing from your school, especially if you went to a school with a high bar-passage rate. It's just obnoxious.
(e) Yes, You Can Learn the Rule Against Perpetuities. My Property professor didn't cover it my 1L year, and I only learned a little bit of it when I took the exam after law school. But this time around I got into it, and I think I finally figured it out. It's a pretty interesting common law doctrine! Of course I have forgotten it now, see (b) supra, but at least there was a brief time when I understood it.
(f) Just Get It Done. Finally, a note to those reading who are taking the exam in less than two weeks. I know it's crazy stressful now. But it will be over soon, and when it is over you can forget everything you just learned. It's just a strange rite of passage, and when the exam is over and you pass you never have to take it again. At least unless you move to California someday.

Does a warning for running a red light increase insurance rates? PLEASE HELP!?
Today I got pulled over for the first time for running a red light , when the officer pulled me over, as he was getting off his bike I took my seatbelt off (I know, now that I think of it, it was such a stupid thing to do, but it was my first time being pulled over and I didnt know how to react). He di.dn't say anything about the seatbelt, but he told me that I ran the red light back there. Ok, let me explain this to you guys now, i don't know if you're familiar with Cape Cod or not but there are TONS, literally tons of tourists here right now, and the roads are really narrow.. There was a guy in an Audi pulling into a parking spot in reverse in front of me and he was taking half of the lane that I was on.. This parking spot happens to be 10 ft away from the set of lights. In my mind I was thinking, I'm gonna go to the left side to let this guy go in, and while that was happening I was worried about the tourists that like to jaywalk and cross the road inbetween cars... So I go to the left and the left and gas it a little bit, I was going like 10 mph as I was taking off, and the light turns yellow, I cross the crosswalk, then the light turns red and I drive under the set of lights.. These 2 bike cops came immediately after me... So long story short, it was my first time being pulled over, I took the seatbelts off, and I ran the red light because there was a guy pulling into a parking stop right in front of me and I was too worried looking around afraid I was going to hit a jaywalking tourists. I know people always think they're right, but I honestly think I didn't do anything wrong here. I got a $25 seat belt fine and a warning for running the red light, which is complete BS. I know it's a warning but I don't want it on my record at all, how can I appeal, any tips? Im only 18 years old, just got off my JOL and I'm very conscientious of other people, never speed or anything. I appreciate your help, will give best answer, thanks!""

How do you fight with the other party's insurance company?
Hi, my car insurance covers for liability only and now I have an accident with a big truck. The big truck hit my car from the side. We were driving from 2 lanes next to each other and at one point the two lanes combine into one. While I was alittle pass over the truck, it hit me from the side. Their side has no damage since it is a big truck and our side has damaged from the driver side. The police report didn't explain clearly about whose fault it is except it mentions what the two drivers said. I think it is not my fault and the other driver denied it is his fault either. My insurance company didn't help much because we only have liability. Now, the other party insurance company called me and said they can't pay for the damanges since it is both parties fault. Therefore, pay for damanges on our own. Like I said, the other party didn't have any damages. If we have to fix it by ourselves, it will cost over $1500. :-( How should I fight with the insurance company to get my claims?""

Minor car accident (not at fault) - should I go to my insurance or small claims court?
I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice. Last week I was involved in a minor car accident. I was at a stop light and the car behind me decided they could not wait and they tried to get by my car to make a left turn. They did not have enough room and scraped against my car with theirs. No one was hurt and no police were called. We pulled over and I got their name, phone number and address. They did not give me their insurance information and said they'd like to settle outside insurance because there are only scratches. I know it was stupid but I said okay. Also I do not have the license plate number of the car. I thought I wrote it down but I did not (I understand this is a big mistake on my behalf). We made contact over phone throughout the week and discussed repairs but suddenly they stopped answering my calls. I believe they are avoiding me. Now I am at a loss of what to do. Should I take this issue up with my insurance (at the risk of raising my premiums) or should I take this to small claims court? In either case I do not have the car's license plate so if it isn't their car will that be insufficient evidence to prove they are at fault (my word against theirs)? Thank you in advance for all your answers.""

Do you have to have car insurance for all of your vehicles (California- read more for details)?
I live in California and I understand that by law here you have to have car insurance; at least minimum coverage that is. But does this apply to all cars regardless of whether you even drive them on the street or not? The reason why I ask this is because I have a 1971 Chevy Camaro SS which I bought from my father about a year ago (He basically gave it to me, but I didn't want to look spoiled in front of my sister so I gave him $2,000 for it). I did have it insured for the first year thinking it probably wouldn't cost me much, but now I really regret getting it insured since it costed me nearly a fortune this year alone. And the thing that really sucks is that I've never even driven it yet since it still needs a lot of tuning up (and unfortunately I don't have enough time to fix it up since I'm usually a very busy person). Do you think it's possible to uninsure my camaro since it's not even drivable yet? I mean it's not like I'm going to hit a car or something with it since it's just sitting in my garage the whole time. I would ask my insurance agent about this, but I never really trusted them. (They were the ones that persuaded me to get it insured in the first place without even telling me whether I had to or not)""

Questions about finding inexpensive car insurance usually refer to it as cheap . Questions about finding inexpensive health insurance usually refer to it as affordable . I do not recall ever seeing a question refer to affordable car insurance, and only rarely to cheap health insurance. Why is this? Why do car insurance questions use the word cheap and health insurance questions use the word affordable , and not the other way around? Is it just tradition, like saying Merry Christmas and Happy New Year , but never saying Happy Christmas and Merry New Year ? Is it because the law has the word affordable in its title, causing that word to be associated with health insurance? Is it because most of the questions are from someone who is trying to manipulate search results by causing searches for cheap car insurance and affordable health insurance to come to this website? Is it because car insurance questions usually come from users under 25 years old and questions about getting health insurance usually come from older users (health insurance questions from users under 25 usually have to do with saying on their parents' insurance and/or using their parents' insurance)?""

Why is a five door car cheaper to insure than a 3 door car?
My father got a quote for a 5 door 1995 ford fiesta yesterday for 240. The previous car was also a fiesta of the same year and same engine but was a 3 door which cost 340 per year. We have had a 5 door ford fiesta before but that cost 340 per year as well, but the engine was the same and it was the same year. Why the difference in insurance cost between 3 and 5 doors?""

600cc supersport vs 1000cc sport insurance cost?
I'm young and most insurance companies wouldn't insure me on a supersport until I've been riding for 3 years. So i'm wondering if for some dumb reason they'd be more likely to insure me on a 1000cc sportbike than a 600cc supersport bike just because the 600 is a ss. The other part of the question is what's the deal with 1000cc vs 600ccSS with older riders? Thanks love ya guys

Full tort or limited tort... Is it worth it to spend the extra 15% to get full tort car insurance?
I am 21 and getting my first new car tomorrow. I am looking for car insurance. It looks like I could save about 15% on my car insurance if I get limited tort instead of full tort. What do I risk by only getting limited tort? Is it worth the money?
Which make of cars are cheap to insure?
I'm planning on getting a new car but which car manufacturers make cars that are cheap on insurance? It seems Honda is on the higher side, but I was looking at Mitsubishi and theirs seems pretty low, and Mitsu is the one I was going to go with to begin with. Any suggestions? Assume it's just a normal non-sports car.""
Have you ever added an additional driver to your car insurance?
Did it raise the cost of your premium? By how much? I realize this will differ for everyone. I'm only asking because I will be added on as a driver to my mother's car after I receive my license in a couple of weeks. I'm 21 (i realize this is late to be getting a license, there were some things that unabled me to throughout the years) but not a student. I realize what we will get charged (if at all) is not the same as what someone else did/did not get charged, just wondering what might come up.""
How much would car insurance cost for a 17 year old?

Insurance cost for a BMW 325i?
So I am 19 bought a 2004 BMW 325i for 12,000 dollars and was wondering how much the insurance would be? I live in CT and are only planning to use for school.""
Would you get Uninsured Insurance coverage in this case?
Car worth: $2000 (KBB) Annual driving: 4000 miles Uninsured Insurance Liability ($15k/$30k): $100 (a year) Uninsured Insurance Collision (up to $3500): $50 (a year) Not going to get comp/collision since it's only worth $2000. My insurance company is requesting that I sign a UI waiver since I initially said no to UI. So I'm not sure now. Just liability is costing me $700 a year (even with good driver discount) so getting UI would add $150 to it so was wondering if it's really worth it or not.

anyway. today, for a day where I didn’t leave my apartment, was about as good as they can get. I woke up at 12:14 pm (my late alarm was set for 1 pm), and I had cookies for breakfast because I mean they have oats and raisins in them they’re basically healthy. I didn't want to start studying secured transactions because secured transactions sucks, so I went back to making remedies flash cards to get through the rest of the outline I’ve been using. After a while of doing that, I wanted to get my stuff ready for the interview, so I spent a while doing that, and then I was combing through the emails trying to find an address and I was like FUCK I don’t know where I’m going so I emailed them and they were like “oh no sorry it’s just a phone interview” to which I was just like OH okay good that makes my life that much easier, I can be in my pajamas and have my laptop in front of me with information about the job in front of me in case I need to access it. So I was not upset about this development. I went back to doing remedies flashcards until the interview time, and sometime in there I got an email from my legal drafting professor with my graded final assignment attached. And I was just like, okay, deep breaths, don’t be upset you can handle this whatever it is it’s just gonna be and it’ll be fine. so I open it, and I’m looking at the point breakdown and seeing that I got all the points on most of them, and then I scroll to the bottom and see a 47 (out of 50) and I was legit like, wait, was this assignment actually out of 100?? because I couldn’t believe I did that well after an entire semester of getting like, half of the points on assignments. but here it is, in front of me, complete with comments from my professor talking about how great it was. my last assignment was 10 out of 20, and this one was 47 out of 50. guys, I was so overwhelmed I actually started crying. The feeling of relief was so immense. I was literally preparing myself not to get upset about getting a bad grade on an assignment that I poured my heart and soul into because this is the work I want to do, but I’d been doing so badly on the assignment I just had no faith that there was going to be anything good. I was telling myself that if I end up with one C on my transcript it wouldn’t be that big of a deal, even if it knocked down my GPA and class rank (which we all know I’m very protective of). I was so ready for it to be bad, but then it was good. so good, like, best grade I’ve ever gotten on a legal writing assignment ever. I felt so vindicated. I was beginning to doubt myself over my bad grades in this case. I was beginning to think that maybe I wasn’t a good writer after all, that motion that my supervisor thought was excellent was just a fluke, maybe I just suck at all of this. But I worked really hard on this assignment. I spent hours pouring through cases trying to find the right ones to use, and I found them, I found the best arguments, and I knew it was great but I still felt like it wouldn't get a good grade. but it did, and honestly, I was just so happy that it happened. So I took a while just being happy about that haha which was definitely justified. Got ready for the phone interview though, and sure enough at 4:30 I got the phone call. I had been poking around their website earlier in the day, and I found out the lady who was doing the interview is actually an alum of my law school, and my school is super big on alumni hiring newly graduated students and bringing them into the fold, so that was definitely good news. So I answered the call and I started talking, she was telling me about the company, basically they help other companies follow legal regulations they have to follow by apply technology to make the systems better, and basically this would be applying legal analysis skills to data and text and bringing out the ways to best comply with regulations, so that all seems cool and interesting. I definitely owned up to not knowing all that much about the field but I was ready to learn, and they were like that’s really fine we know a lot of people aren’t going to have experience and we’re just looking for someone who's willing to learn, and I was like okay perfect, because that made it seem like they’re actually considering hiring me (lol) because I kind of thought they were gonna do a preliminary interview and be like okay yeah she doesn’t know what she’s doing we can’t hire her 😂 but apparently not! Interviews always get me though, because when they have questions like “tell me about a time you worked on a team” or questions like that about stuff I’ve done in the past I’m like, entirely unable to think of any examples, and because my brain is so good at bs-ing, I end up coming out with these almost totally fabricated stories haha like it’ll be roughly based on something that happened just with completely changed circumstances to fit whatever the question was, and I hate doing it but it just happens when I can’t think of anything! And not gonna lie, my bs stories are pretty good. I told a totally fabricated version of taking charge of my legal writing team project first year (the one that was a total dumpsterfire, but that’s okay), I talked about hanging out with my sister when she was younger and trying to balance how much of a parent I was to her and how much responsibility I had with my parents when they would be like “it’s too late why didn’t you put her to bed” and I was like “because it’s not my job??” which did more or less actually happen, just not quite in the way described. She did ask what I’ve done that I was most proud of, and really all I could think of was forming the TWLOHA UChapter my senior year of undergrad so I talked about that and she sounded like, really impressed and touched by the answer haha. when she asked about what my weakness are I was basically like “well if I’m doing something that’s not engaging my brain it can be hard for me to stay interested in it” and she was like “wow, that’s probably the best answer to that question I’ve ever heard, because everyone always tries to turn it into a strength and I really appreciate that you didn’t do that” haha so there were lots of brownie points being scored all around, so that was good. We set up a *tentative* second phone interview for Monday, saying she’d send final say about it later today, so I took that as a good sign for sure haha. I just felt like everything went really well with it. It was funny at the end when she started talking about salary and was like “we really can only start you at $45K, and that’s not negotiable, so if that’s a dealbreaker for you then now would be to say it” and I was like 😂😂😂😂 honestly my salary expectations are basically “you pay me” because I’ve been working my ass off for so long with no compensation, so I will happily take whatever amount of money they will give me. And it’s not like that’s even an absurdly low number?? it’s pretty much par for the course in most public interest law jobs so I was cool with that, I guess with some areas of law that have six figure starting salaries there would be an expectation of there to be more but like, really, that’s not something that’s really going to be a dealbreaker for me. So yeah, it all went well and a little while later I got an email confirming the second interview for Monday, so this is all very good! It’s funny, because I’ve made more progress towards an Illinois based job in the past few days than I’ve had in literally months of sending out applications everywhere and not getting any response, but now I’m here with two very solid job prospects. The New York job is still going to be the first choice because it is what I *actually* want to do, but if that doesn’t work out I’m glad to have solid prospects that I wouldn’t totally hate. So yeah, all good stuff. For a while after getting off the phone I looked through the remedies flashcards for errors and reading over them, I’m not very concerned about this class despite the fact that I was way more interested in my twitter feed while legends was on than actually paying attention, because it’s really just a mix of contracts and torts and I already know those pretty well and I can cram the rest in, so I’m not concerned really because it’s stuff I already understand the concepts of, not like secured transactions that might as well be in another language. Then I only have civil rights, which I’m really not concerned about, but I will have to put some effort into prepping because it’s open book, so I’ll need to make an outline for it and read through all my case briefs because there were some cases I never actually read (whoops, blame senioritis) so I’ll know what cases to go to after reading a fact pattern, but that shouldn’t be too hard. I worked until a little after 7 before finishing up, made some dinner and got ready to watch Arrow. It was interesting, because I had literally no interest in the main plot with Oliver and Anatoly and Diaz, but I really liked the stuff with Quentin and black siren, along with the NTA stuff so like, everything except the main character 😂😂 but I mean the writers did that to themselves really. Katie Cassidy’s acting has really just been knocking it out of the park, her complexity in how you can see Black Siren having warring emotions is so well done, like honestly she deserves a fucking Emmy for this part. It’s so obvious that she is in it deep as far as caring about Quentin goes, and she knows it too, and when they had the scene at the end when Quentin talks about losing his Laurel and sometimes doing bad things for good reasons I basically died, they’re so fucking pure and I just love it so much and if they kill Quentin in the finale and just bring Sara in for his funeral I’m gonna be so fucking mad at them. I liked the NTA stuff too, they had some pretty awesome scenes, blowing up that truck with the drugs in it was pretty epic, so props to them for actually dealing with the problems right now, lol. I have to complain about the scene at the end though where Oliver gets “arrested” because like......it’s not like he was a fugitive they were trying to hunt down, they couldn’t done that at literally any point?? and then Diaz was like “don’t even think about bail” when he was already fucking out on bail and that comment makes zero sense???? then the tv was like “he was arrested for violating his bail” which is just like.....how exactly did he do that?? what are you even saying that he did to justify this?? and you suddenly care about bail conditions when you clearly didn’t when Oliver went out of state for Barry and Iris’ wedding (not leaving the state is a pretty basic bail condition legit everywhere in the US)??? So I had a lot of issues with that like, 30 seconds of a scene, so just IMAGINE how fun I’m going to be next week when there’s an entire trial for me to complain about and protest that they’re fucking it up?????? And yes, I am going to be insufferable the entire damn time because that’s who I am and I’m not giving that up, dammit. So I will be pointing out every single inaccuracy in the entire damn episode. I will say though, based on the preview, the appearance of Tommy potentially would be a game changer that could definitely help me feel better about the episode as a whole. So yeah, we’ll have to see how that goes. Didn’t have anything else to watch so I went back to Game of Thrones. I would probably find it more interesting if I had any idea who half of these characters are and how they play into the overall plot, and believe me I’m trying, but there are just people popping up left and right and I have no clue who they are. Also, I’m not really a fan of all the sex/nudity and gore in all of it, like it’s really graphic and like, that’s just not something I enjoy seeing, and constantly seeing people half naked or wholly naked just feels uncomfortable to me, so 🤷🏻‍♀️ I of course do enjoy other aspects of the show though and will probably keep watching for the time being, anyway. I witnessed the arrival of Brienne of Trath who was pretty damn bad ass, so I definitely appreciate her and I feel like I will do so for quite some time. When that episode was over I watched the news a bit before starting to get ready for bed. I should probably mention that somewhere in here I stumbled upon the video of a performance of one of the songs from the new Mean Girls musical on one of the late shows, and holy fuck man, I am obsessed with this song. I’ve literally had it on repeat all fucking day, lol. It’s called “I’d Rather Be Me” (and as you can see I changed my header on here to it already) and you can get it on iTunes and it’s basically the best thing I’ve ever heard, so I highly recommend that. And yeah, that about wraps up today. I know I said I was in a shitty mood earlier but I am feeling someone better after writing this post, so that’s good. Tomorrow I have PT at 2:30 but nothing else really, so it’ll probably just be more studying like I should be doing, good stuff. Alright, it’s past 1 am so I should be getting to bed now. Goodnight sweeties. Have a good one.
