Steve arrived at Bucky’s with a ‘friend’ tonight. She was sweet enough, at first, but now she’s really making you mad. ‘Sharon’ won’t stop flirting with Steve, who seems especially uncomfortable when her hand brushes down the length of his back.

Steve’s neck tenses slightly as she whispers something in his ear. His body stiffens each time she laughs and rests her head on his shoulder. He does not move his hand over hers once she lays hers on his thigh to lean forward in conversation.

She leaves it there.

Her hand, just sitting there, on Steve’s lap, and he’s clearly not into it.

You hop onto the coffee table and swat at Sharon’s hand before she suddenly moves to touch you.

“Awww, Steve, look. I think she’s jealous of us,” she coos.

Sharon flips to scratch at your cheek, which feels good, then she says exactly the wrong thing.

“Don’t worry, babygirl. He’ll still be around to pet you.”

No one—no one—calls you that but Steve.

Your fangs are out instantly, claws spread on both front feet as one raises into the air, and both Steve and Bucky pounce to stop you. Sharon, however, is the fastest to grab the scruff behind your neck and lift you to arm’s length.

“No, Alpine, we don’t attack friends,” Bucky soothes.

“Bad kitty,” Steve bites from behind bared teeth. “Stop that.”

You fall limp in Agent 13’s hold, eyes wide and questioning to the handsome blond man whose honor you were protecting, but after a moment of silence, Bucky cracks up, doubled over with near tears in his eyes.

Sharon breaks next, gently placing you in Steve’s lap as he settles back onto the couch, a dejected look on his face.

You don’t understand. You think they are laughing at you, so you growl in annoyance.

“Well, at least somebody bought it,” Sharon chides Steve. “Can’t say your performance will work on anybody else.”

“The point is for the mark to believe you two are a couple, punk. I barely believe you’re friends. You look so uncomfortable.” Bucky shakes his head, sweeping over your haunches before returning to his seat.

Sharon scratches your butt, and your head whips around to give her the stink eye from behind the tucked forearm of Steve. She smiles, almost proud of your fighting spirit.

“Don’t worry,” she loudly whispers to you. “We’ve kissed before, and let me tell you, there is nothing there.”

“Hey,” Steve grumps, ��it wasn’t that bad.”

Bucky makes a face. “He…tried. Gonna have to try a hell of a lot harder to convince a new gang in Madripoor—“

“I know, but it’s not really me, is it?” Steve pulls you a little closer, holds you a little tighter in his defense.

“The photostatic veil cannot make you a believable boyfriend just like it cannot make you a good dancer,” Bucky points out.

“Woah, now,” Sharon chuckles, “baby steps. Literally. Rogers has two left feet.”

Steve looks down at you gazing up at his handsome face. “Alpine has faith in me,” he mutters.

“We’ll have faith in you after you practice. Put down your real girlfriend and come dance with your fake girlfriend so we don’t all die in two days!”

He just buries his fingers in your fur, talking about how soft you are in hushed tones. You don’t like how stressed Steve looks, and you wedge your face into the crook of his elbow in an effort to console him.

Bucky clears his throat.

“No, you may not take my cat into a sting operation—” he stretches his arms toward you to take over “—not until she’s had some training at least.”

“Absolutely,” Sharon bursts. “Train her up! Bring her everywhere—that’s safe—because I like her. She’s feisty.”

“Ok after this one we have one more left.” You said as you gave Jimmy and yourself a full strawberry and a block of cheese. “This is one of my favorites.” You said as you just ate the whole thing in one bite, not even bothering to say three two one.

“Damn girl! It was not that good Y/N.” He said as he took a bite his eyes widened in shock. “What the hell?” He said before eating the rest. “I told you!” You laughed out loud as he grabbed another strawberry and some more cheese.

“Ok this is our last one and I actually haven’t tried this one, it’s watermelon and yogurt so let’s try it and see if we like it.” You said as you handed Jimmy the slice of watermelon and topped it with some peach yogurt. “Cheers.” You said as you both ate it. “Mmm I like this one but it’s kinda weird to me, this yogurt is a little too tangy, and tangy and sweet don’t mix with me unless it’s any fruit and Tajin.”

“I like it.” Jimmy said as he dipped his slice into some more yogurt. “It’s kinda like savory to me.” Jimmy said as he ate the rest and took yours since you said you wouldn’t finish it.

“Well that was fun.” You said as you yawned. “Uh oh, Someone’s sleepy.” Jon said before picking you up bridal style and taking you back to y’all’s shared bedroom. “Jon! Not with those simple maid clothes, not with those hands always busy scrubbing, sweeping, gardening, or carrying clean sheets upstairs. Not with that calm smile you gave to everyone, without exception, even him.

He, who was a nobleman. The heir to House Zigvolt. Disciple of Prince Malleus Draconia himself, scion of a family. An honorable nobleman. Impeccable. Proud.

"Why can't I stop thinking about her?!" Sebek yelled as he slammed a book in the east wing library.

But he was alone. Alone with his jumbled thoughts and the image of your smile intruding into his head every hour of the day.

He'd first seen you when you were helping one of the cooks carry buckets of water to the stables. Your dress had mud on the hem, and your hair was slightly tousled by the breeze.

And yet… it was there, right at that moment, that the most dangerous thought of all crossed Sebek's mind:

From then on, he began to notice you too much.

When you passed the rest of the staff in line to serve tea, when you greeted him politely without meeting his eyes, or when you giggled softly with one of the other maids… he listened. He looked at you. He analyzed you. And he hated it.

"No! This is improper! My duty comes above all!" —he said to himself in front of his bedroom mirror, clenching his fists, his reflection reflecting the expression of a nobleman tormented.

But his determination didn't last long.

One afternoon, while he was reviewing documents in the sunroom, he heard noises in the garden. He looked out the window and saw you: you were on your knees, trying to save some flowers ruined by the rain. Your furrowed brow, your focused expression… and the fact that you were working even though no one asked you to… all of that was the final straw.

He left immediately.

“Hey, you!” he called, his voice firm and projecting as always.

He did it in an authoritative voice, as if it were important. But you both knew he just wanted to see you.

And you… you began to notice it too. You noticed how his voice became less rigid around you. How he blushed when your hands brushed his as you handed him a cup. How he stared at you for a second longer than appropriate before looking away with a grunt and a "Do your job, woman!"

You were amused by his efforts to appear serious. Because even though his voice was strong, his heart screamed louder.

One day, you found him in the stables, ostensibly checking the saddles, but looking like he was having an existential crisis.

"Are you all right, young Zigvolt?"

"What are you doing here?! This isn't your sector!"

"I was looking for the gardener's horse. The rope came loose," you said, shrugging.

Sebek looked at you. He lowered his head for a second. Then he spoke to you, more quietly. Less… noble.

"…Can I ask you a question?"

"Sure, my lord."

"If I… if I were just an ordinary boy. One who doesn't live in a castle or have a long last name or wear clothes with gold buttons… would you still talk to me?"

You looked at him silently.

"I already talk to you, do not I?"

"Ugh! You're impossible!" he growled, turning around. "You don't understand! I…"

He broke off.

Then he sighed. For the first time, in human form. Vulnerable.

"I lo-... maybe like you," he said, almost annoyed with himself.

"And I hate it. Because it's not right. Because I have a duty, a name, a family. Because you're… a simple servant."

His words hurt you. But you also saw the tremor in his voice. The real conflict in his eyes.

"…What if I felt something too?"

Sebek looked at you, as if his world had stopped.

"What…?"

"I am not noble, nor special. But I'm human too. And my heart feels things it shouldn't.

He took a step toward you.

"I can't offer you a trouble-free life. Or promise that this will be easy. If anyone finds out, it'll be a scandal. And yet…"

"And yet?" you asked, your voice low.

Sebek lowered his gaze for a moment. And then, he looked up resolutely.

And that's how it all began. His clumsy gestures. The notes hidden under napkins. The encounters in empty hallways. The accidental brush of fingers as he handed you a book.

Sebek still struggled internally every day. But he wasn't alone in that dilemma anymore.

Because you… you chose him too.

Despite everything.

Your relationship was secret. The stone walls, the fogged-up windows, the silence of the gardens at dusk knew it.

Sebek never said it clearly (how could he say I love you without fainting from embarrassment?), but he showed it to you.

He left you little flowers between the pages of the book you knew he'd already read. He learned your schedule so you'd bump into each other “by chance” in the hallway. He memorized what you liked to eat… and magically, it would appear in the leftovers the kitchen “by chance” left you at the end of the day.

It was your favorite color.

There was an empty room, in an old tower of the castle. It was full of cobwebs, old books, and a window that looked out onto the woods.

And that was where you could be honest.

That was where Sebek took your hand for the first time.

Where he told you (after ten minutes of stuttering and yelling incoherently) that "your eyes had the same glow as the fireflies in Briar Valley, only with more warmth… and that's important, right?! Because warmth isn't common! And—ugh, forget it! But you understand me, right?!"

That was where you told him you didn't need rare flowers, or promises of jewels, or titles… you just wanted him to keep looking at you like you were the most valuable thing in his world.

And he, his cheeks burning bright, whispered,

"You already are."

At night, Sebek would sneak into the kitchen to leave you clumsy notes in his exaggeratedly formal handwriting:

“You worked hard today. I'm proud."

But you did it first. You curled up next to him, resting your head on his shoulder. And Sebek, after a few seconds of remaining as stiff as a statue, lowered his head and rested his head against yours.

"If anyone finds out about this… I'll be finished."

"Me too."

Sebek hadn't stopped being noble. Nor had you stopped being a maiden...

… but the most sincere romance of his life was being written.

Real talk: the fact that Anya expects to read Demetrius’ mind but sees nothing is kind of sad because Demetrius saw his 6yo brother approach and congratulate him, and had zero thoughts in his brain. But that doesn’t mean Demetrius doesn’t care about him. When Damian stutters, Demetrius initiates conversation by talking about Damian’s grades, showing that he indeed pays attention.

Demetrius seems almost resentful by Damian’s insistence to impress Donovan, giving out a snarky, passive aggressive, teen appropriate response: “How would I know? It’s not as if I’m in regular contact with him.” This is like the passive aggressive version of whatever is going on with Melinda. Damian is a relatively innocent 6yo kid seeking his father’s approval, but both his mother and his brother appear to be seriously affected (in a bad way) by Donovan, and they avoid talking about Donovan even as Damian repeatedly mentions him. Demetrius doesn’t understand Damian’s desire for their father’s approval. He also doesn’t understand his father, hinting at some sort of disconnect between them.

What also saddens me a bit is how Demetrius barely acknowledged Damian’s friends talking to him. Like, they’re six year old kids trying to make a good impression. Still, Demetrius didn’t completely ignore them, just gave a meaningless “oh” and decided to stop thinking about people. It’s very much giving “stressed (and depressed) to the point of apathy”. When facing the innocence (ignorance?) and optimism of 6yo kids, Demetrius doesn’t understand. (And maybe he doesn’t understand friendship, which is what Damian has?)

I mentioned before that characters Anya met are probably “good” characters on the side of Forgers or at least are sympathetic to readers. Because if Anya met a “bad” character and read their mind, she would be too OP and the plot could be quickly solved. It’s like how we all thought Melinda was suspicious when she met Yor, but then Anya met Melinda and read her mind to reveal that she cares about Damian (even if it’s in a twisted way). Demetrius is interesting because he subverts what I said above by thinking very little, so Anya cannot really read him. But so far, I think his portrayal is that of a typical middle schooler with middle school angst, and he cares about Damian even if he has zero thoughts on his brain (and doesn’t like the way Damian craves fatherly approval). He is still a child and presumably a victim of his father’s parenting.

The framing is also interesting. Damian telling his friends to go on without him while he waits for Demetrius. The panel of Demetrius towering over a stuttering Damian. Demetrius going away, showing a panel of him as a small figure in an otherwise blank background. That panel when Anya thinks Damian’s relatives are weird has her looking at Damian while he’s some distance away from her (and the rest of his friends). The brothers feel disconnected. Damian is both eager and nervous to talk to Demetrius. Demetrius is nonchalant and apathetic, but not impolite or outwardly wholly dismissive.

Given Damian’s wacky family situation, I’m glad he has friends at Eden. Ewen and Emile of course are steadfast and loyal companions, always eager to back up their beloved boss man. Anya can read his mind and she knows about his insecurities (and also his weird family).

Becky is also good as a friend because she doesn’t care about sucking up to Damian, she often calls him out, but she also supports Damian when he deserves it. A sweet scene here is Damian saying he’s a Desmond so he’s expected to get a star, and Becky adding “it’s still a great achievement. Congrats!”. Becky is validating his success and telling Damian it’s okay to be proud and happy for himself. Even though she’s usually judgemental towards Damian, she’s still kind to him because that’s who she is as a character.

In the end, Damian still wants his father’s attention. He had no idea Demetrius wasn’t that close to their father… I would assume Demetrius spent most of his time at Eden and this is Damian’s first year at Eden, so he actually gets to interact with his brother instead of hearing things about him?

So far, Demetrius seems like a very jaded character in contrast to Damian who feels like a beam of sunshine now. He’s the heir so he’s got more troubles. But it’s nice that he’s finally debuted and no longer in mystery. Can’t wait to see what Endo has in store for him :)

You sighed with relief when the front door to your house closed and you heard the familiar footsteps of your husband. You rest your hands against the kitchen countertop, closing your eyes and trying to find a comfortable position. The baby inside of you recently became too active and she gave you no time to relax, always kicking and moving. 

“Hey, sweetheart, are you okay? What’s going on? Something with the baby?” Before you could even understand it, Rafe was already near you, turning you around to face him. You opened your eyes, immediately feeling a desire to melt in your husband's hands, and softly smiled at his concerned voice.

“Hi.” Whispering, you put your arms around his neck, bringing Rafe down to your level, and gave him the biggest hug you could with a baby bump between you. “We’re okay. Just from the moment you left this morning, your daughter decided to throw a party inside of me or something. She’s been kicking me non-stop and my poor bladder cannot take it anymore.” You buried your face in Rafe’s shirt, inhaling your favorite smell of his perfume. It felt like your whole body relaxed the moment he slowly hugged you back, running his hands down your sides and reaching your belly. 

“Is that right, baby girl?” He slid away from your hands, sinking to his knees in front of you. Rafe smirked at you, as he pulled one of his shirts that you were currently wearing up, revealing your bump. Then he looked at the silhouette of his daughter’s legs, showing through the skin, and put his hands on top. “Have you been bothering your mom, hm?” 

You sighed in relief at the feeling of the two soft palms caressing your skin. Rafe loved talking to your bump, he was sure that the baby could hear him, so he spent hours just saying random things and stories. Honestly, you were sure that his voice was working as a sedative for your baby because the violent kicking calmed down again. 

“She’s already such a daddy’s girl, oh God.” You giggled, looking down at Rafe who looked at you back with a proud smile. “I can’t believe that I’ve been trying to stop it for the whole day without any results, and it took you like one minute. That’s so unfair.” 

"Sorry, sweetheart, I can’t do anything about it.” He placed a few light kisses on your belly, talking to the baby again. “You should give your mommy some rest, pretty girl. You know she’s tired of taking care of you for almost eight months, so you better behave yourself when I’m away.”

“I swear, she calms down only when you’re here.” You sighed, gently touching Rafe’s short hair with your hand. He gave you another sheepish smile, before placing a last kiss on your exposed skin and standing up. 

“Then we should go back to bed, so you can get some sleep. How’s that sound?” Rafe put his hands on the sides of your face, making you look up at him and connecting tyour lips together. "Fuck, I missed you so much.”

“Mhm, me too. And I really want to go to bed and lay with you. You don’t have to work anymore today, do you?” You mumbled, enjoying the light touches of your husband’s lips on your forehead and cheeks. 

“Nah, I want to spend the whole evening with my girls, the work can wait.”

When Anaxa's wife complains that the only thing missing from their home is a scientist cat, she is immediately corrected - even the cat in this family is involved in science.

Anaxa sat in his usual chair, slowly sipping the tea he had prepared himself, since "no one in this house could brew it properly." There was a stack of books on the table in front of him, but he didn't even try to look at them today. He had other entertainment.

- You don't understand anything! - the eldest daughter exclaimed indignantly, folding her arms over her chest. - The texts carved on the ruins of the Western Amphitheater cannot be deciphered using traditional linguistics! They are an archaic form of symbols that convey not a literal meaning, but a concept!

- This is nonsense! - the youngest leaned hotly on the table. - Concepts are abstractions! I am sure that they can be translated using the usual method of comparative analysis!

- Ha! Then why has no scientist done it yet?!

- Because they do not have my genius!

Anaxa raised the cup to his lips with a slight smile. For the first time in a long time, he felt completely satisfied. Both his daughters were smart, daring, and intolerant of stupidity. Just like him. The only person at the table who did not share this enthusiasm was his wife. She sat opposite him, her head in her hand, and looked at her daughters as if fate had played a cruel joke on her.

- Why did this happen to me? - she moaned, looking at the ceiling. - The whole house is made up of scientists. Even the tea is probably brewed according to scientific formulas.

- Don't exaggerate, dear, - Anaxa put his cup on the saucer and looked at her with a soft smile. - You just have a subtle perception of reality.

- I have a subtle nervous system, - she corrected.

- Stop it, you like it when we think about the nature of the world, don't you? - she slowly turned her gaze to him.

- Think - yes. But when it happens at dinner, at breakfast, during a walk, when I sleep, when I’m not sleeping… I don’t want the cat to be a scientist!

At that moment, a disgruntled "Mrrr!" was heard from the windowsill. The wife slowly turned her head towards the source of the sound. Anaxa's cat was sitting on the windowsill - a fluffy black animal with icy eyes, who looked at her with disdain, as if offended by such a statement. Anaxa nodded calmly to the cat.

- You see, even he agrees that you are talking nonsense.

- That's it. Enough, - the wife closed her eyes tiredly. Anaxa, smiling, touched her hand.

- You are just jealous, because you do not have such amazing abilities for knowledge as we do, - she snorted quietly.

- You know, it seems to me that the only thing I got from you is patience.

- And excellent taste in men, - he added calmly, sipping his tea.

The wife rolled her eyes, and their daughters continued their furious scientific argument, not paying any attention to their parents. Anaxa bowed his head slightly, watching them.

- But admit it, you're proud of them, - she sighed, looked at her daughters and, smiling slightly, shrugged.

- Of course, I'm proud... But I'm scared to imagine what will happen if they grow up and find husbands, - Anaxa thought for a second.

- Then we'll drink tea and watch them trample their husbands into the ground with logic.
