the WGA strike & my future as a writer

cazio here. hey. maybe you’ve noticed my chapter updates slowing down over the past few months. you also may have heard me talking about being unemployed. how do those two correlate? i’ve spent the past month in a state of so much stress & anxiety i can’t focus on anything, that’s how.

the writer’s strike/impending SAG strike (read: studio greed) is having a ripple effect on everyone in film. non-union employees (like me) are suddenly looking at potentially being jobless until 2024 with no union to help us. the singular emergency relief fund for non-union workers in entertainment won’t let us apply for aid until our bank statements prove there aren’t enough funds to pay the bills--and our request could still be denied.

as a freelancer, i typically have 6 months of savings ready to go. now i’m looking at 8 months of unemployment due to the timing of my last job ending.

in a perfect world, i would write fanfic for a living. but all of us fandom folks know it’s illegal to profit off of fanfic.

however, i do plan to be a full time writer someday. i’m in the process of finishing up the second draft of my first commercial manuscript to get published, but even if i get an agent tomorrow, it will be at least a year before i see anything come of that.

i’m starting work on another manuscript to have ready to go when the time comes--in fact, i’m converting phantoms and pencil marks into an original work called Phantom Pains. this means character and story changes that will bring new insight and new scenes & storylines to readers, even those who read the fanfic version (as in 50k words of more content).

i will be posting the first draft of the new original story chapter by chapter, exclusively on my ko-fi for my supporters.

if you don’t care about an original work, that’s fine. i get it--fanfic is special because we all know the characters involved. i have a maxiel fanfic outline and a piarles outline in the pipeline for when FG and MIATT are finished, but right now those chapter updates are excruciatingly slow, since every time i sit down at my laptop i’m faced with either writing a story for fun or applying to corporate jobs in the worst job market since 2008 (lol).

May and June Reads

I know it isn’t the end of June but I am posting this anyways! It’s been a rough month and I am working on resetting and orienting so Imma imagine that posting this marks a new start for my reading log periods. Last month, I read seven pieces and this month I managed to read ten! Which makes me quite happy! So many of my reads were stuff that I got consumed in and couldn’t step away from! There are truly so many amazing creations and I am so glad that I am exploring and reading them!

Two months ago when I last posted my reads, I talked about starting a schedule for fanfic reading... I’ve not. BUT! I did put fics that I already know I am interested in reading on my document and filled in everything other than my comments on it. This really helped me keep looking to reads. I plan to continue to putting fics I know I want to prioritize onto my bimonthly log when I find them because that helped so much! I think it also helped me to mix up shorter pieces and longer pieces. I had two pieces that I read that were almost 50k (wow! In so much awe of the authors) and it really helped to have some smaller pieces that I could intersperse as well! It’s been so nice to mix my book reading with my fic reading and work fic reading in as little breaks from all that I am doing!

Generally, I try to only post finished pieces BUT Cath’s amazing works have been things I’ve been slowly reading throughout the past four months! I immediately got hooked on Hoseok and Chaeyoung’s storyline. Because OMG CHILDHOOD NEIGHBOR’S TO POSSIBLY LOVERS? It is gold! I inhaled it! THERE IS ANOTHER PART THOUGH THAT I’VE NOT READ AND AM SO EXCITED TO! And recently I’ve started reading Yoongi and Miso’s storyline which is also SO INTERESTING! I am a slow reader and have been interspersing my reading of her universe through all my other pieces and because everything is one universe and each series is being updated kinda at the same time (which is so impressive! Cath weaves so many stories together and I am so in awe). It didn’t feel right not to mention it.

If you’ve never read an MxOC piece before or don’t really read them, I highly recommend Cath be your introduction to it! I know that on tumblr there is a strong pretense for MxR rather than MxOC (I only read one other OC piece in the six months I’ve been doing this and that is also in this post). The range in MxR is BROAD. We have some who have no physical characteristics, some who do and are labeled, some who do and aren’t labeled, and all of them have personality traits that are close to how the reader is or isn’t. Each reader is a character. They are just vague in some places. OCs are just other characters. They also exist on the same range and are just as rich in depth! I highly recommend you read some if you enjoy reading books and fanfic!

In this fic, Yoongi is a king bee and I absolutely love how his hybrid identity is tied into his trans identity! The story introduces the readers to yoongi and his struggles in such a quick but heartfelt an empathetic way and we get introduced to Namjoon, Hoseok, and Jimin in such a fun and open way! Although the story is only 1.5 k and we only get their meeting, there is so much personality and hope packed into the story. If you're wanting on uplifting quick read, this is a great one.

Only thing: he is emotionally constipated and Yoongi feels so much that he struggles… Oh and also Suga kinda likes Jimin… or does he? Owo. It’s such a good series! The chapters are short and addictive and left me unable to put the fic down! It’s angsty and focuses on the growth of everyone and it’s such a wonderful read. Okay wait now that I'm seriously getting back into writing fanfiction, I'm gonna give you the best piece of fanfic-writing advice I think I can give:

Even if you think it's not your best work, or if you think it's just plain bad, especially if you think it's cringe, post it anyway.

It is a hard lesson to take in. You read other people's works and you compare it to your own. You write and write and write and you still can never get the word choice you think would do your work justice. You worry that the view/like count won't get higher than double digits, if that much. You second guess yourself and even when you really wanna post your work, you don't because you're scared of getting judged.

And it's true, some people are gonna judge you, but the flipside of that is that some people are gonna get so much joy out of what you write.

My fic baby is a 50k xreader fic I wrote when I was 17, and for the most part, I'm really proud of that fanfic because I put a lot of work into it. But Jesus Christ the smut is so bad in it. I wrote that the female reader was on the verge of orgasming, but instead of just saying that, I said she was "caught in vaginal limbo". I thought I was clever. Now that I'm in my 20s, I realize just how fucking cringe that is. I've thought about going back and rewriting that scene dozens of times, but every time I think about doing that, I remind myself of the comments on the chapter. Of course there were people who said things along the lines of "wtf are you writing", but there were also comments of people saying "author vaginal limbo made me laugh so hard I cried" and I remember this: my bad writing made someone smile and that's all that matters.

Most of the fics currently on my AO3 are ones I wrote as a teenager, and a lot of them are not great, but if the fic has just one comment, or one kudos, I tell myself, someone liked it, and I leave it up, unchanged, for them.

And even if your fic is badly written, you may have a great plot idea, and inspire someone else. I've had that happen to me too. The person who came along didn't tell me my fic was bad, but I told myself it was, but they asked me if they could write a fic about the same premise because they loved my prompt idea, and I told them I couldn't wait to see what they made (with credit for the idea ofc), even as I was so paranoid it would be better than mine. And it was better than mine. But honestly it doesn't matter whose was better written. It only matters that we both had fun writing and reading each other's fics, and contributing to that fandom space.

Lastly, I wanna say that this extends past fic writing. It doesn't matter if you're cringe or awkward or weird or clumsy. If you embarrassed yourself by tripping at the mall and spilling your drink, well, the lady sitting across the walkway got a good laugh that afternoon (and she helped me get napkins to clean up, which was nice). If you stutter over your words, someone will find that endearing, even if that someone isn't around now. If you fuck up a presentation at work/school, maybe that reflects poorly on you, but maybe someone in the audience is sitting there thinking "gosh I'm so glad I'm not the only one who gets nervous about presenting."

Yes there's always gonna be people who call you out and berate you for being cringe or annoying or embarrassing. But life isn't any fun if you're always winning. It isn't fulfilling like that. No one is perfect. No one has to be perfect. And by not being perfect and accepting that you are not perfect, you are not only going to live a happier life, but you're also probably going to inspire someone else to live a happier life too.

currently, TPOAA sits at 81450 words (HUH. WHAT) and 13 chapters! i'm confident that i can reach 30k words, all i'd need is like. one or two REALLY good wriitng days, so maybe i can actually aim for the nanowrimo 50k goal, but i don't want to stress myself out, so i'll focus on my goals above first and foremost!

I’ve seen other fanfic writers do an AO3 wrap up and tbh I’ve been kind of embarrassed to do one myself because I was only a productive writer from May to October which isn’t even half of the year (thanks to Jedi: survivor, bg3, and everything in my authors notes) but it was also my most productive year for writing fanfic that I wanted to do something so…

Ao3 statistics don’t easily separate by year for a multi chapter fic that I started back in 2021, but I can do a rough estimate of 2023 stats and then reflect on every fic that I’ve written this year. (Edit: by the time I finish writing this we will be a week into 2024 at least)

I have had so much support for my writing this year thanks to the amazing I Expect You To Die fandom and the IEYTD fandom discord in particular. To be honest, you guys really make it hard to be humble with how much love is showered over my fics and I am so grateful for every kudos, comment, and bookmark I’ve received since I started the Celebrity Crush series way back in 2021 when a certain actor lived in my head rent free.

Like I said before the statistics are rough estimates and I think that the best way to celebrate all I’ve done this past year is with words more than numbers and statistics.

The Spy and The Liar: The Movie

This is probably the best fic I’ve ever written! I am so proud of how it has grown beyond ten bullet points to be the 66k story it currently is with more to come. I’ve loved weaving foreshadowing and subtext into the story that I think most people have missed.

It’s also really hard to stay humble as this is the most love I’ve ever gotten on a fic and it has somehow seemingly become the Agent Phoenix/John Juniper fic on ao3. I’ve literally dropped all my other wips for other and bigger fandoms because of how much love and support it’s gotten. Especially because of the people in the fandom discord. Maybe it’s the instant appreciation but I had never been more motivated to write than when y’all shared your love for this fic and the Celebrity Crush series in general.

The Celebrity Crush series and ieytd was the first thing that got me back into writing after going through the most traumatic and violent loss and experience of my entire life back in 2020 (wasn’t even covid related lol). Literally an entire year had passed before I could write again. To know that this story has meant as much to you guys as he has to me has been the greatest gift that could ever been given to me.

The Spy and The Actor

This story wasn’t really supposed to be anything. The first (and only) chapter was written on a whim in one sitting based on a conversation in the fandom discord. Just the third time I’d be rewriting the ieytd 2 with an Agent Phoenix/John Juniper twist…

But then came the comments.

For those that don’t know, the point of the fic was that it was written and published by John Juniper but to come off as a fan thirsting for John instead of John thirsting for Phoenix. At its core it was me roleplaying as John Juniper. And the discord decided to roleplay in the comments as various characters from the games and of course I had to respond in character as John Juniper!

Even when I was a teen I thought roleplay was kinda cringe. But now? I get it, like I get it! I had so much fun roleplaying as John Juniper!!! I’m usually really nice so being able to just let go and be an absolute bitch. I’m so excited to work on the next chapter but I know it’ll have to be when I’ll have time to sit down and roleplay with everyone again.

Phoenix the Vampire Hunter

This was written for Calivide for beta reading a chapter in The Spy and The Liar: The Movie. This is the first fully alternate universe fic I’ve ever written and I absolutely adore the world I’ve created. It’s a sandbox that I’d love to play in more and I’d love for others to play in the sandbox too if they ever feel like it and write their own stories of the world. The ending I have planned leaves the world open for so many possible stories for myself or anyone to explore.

And I promise that I wrote vampire!Juniper before I ever played Baldur’s Gate III and fell in love with Astarion

God this got long but these fics mean so much more to me than simple statistics can tell and I hope people can see why I chose to elaborate on everything.

With 2024 signaling the 10th year of me writing and publishing fanfiction and with last year being so productive, I’m hoping to bring all of last years productivity into the new year as long as the video game industry stops releasing so many good games (I haven’t even gotten to spider-man 2 yet lol)

Do you have any advice/tips for writers with ADHD? I have ADHD and dyslexia on top of it and I've recently started writing fanfic. I love it but it takes so long for me to actually order my thoughts into something readable and find the right words to put down. I get distracted easily. I usually need to get in the mood of the fic I'm writing to have a decent flow but it's rare that I can do it. I just feel distressed cause I have so many ideas but I'm so slow at writing it takes me months to write a 5k oneshot.

Hello!!!!!!!! Yes I have some advice, I would love to share what helps me! I do want to acknowledge that what works for me might not work for you, but something that I find like mega super-duper important as an ADHD life hack is to be honest with yourself and start learning what works for you and how to find tools that work with your specific life. Like, for example, I heavily rely on routine to function AT ALL, but I know that I have to come up with a NEW routine every few months because when they become too familiar they get boring and stop working. And it took me a long time to learn it was okay to just like, leave an ineffective routine in the past and come up with a new one instead of beating myself up because it wasn’t working anymore.

(Please keep in mind that I’m in the US and I don’t have insurance so I’m like learning all this shit cold brew, white knuckling it on my own where like maybe this is extremely pedestrian advice that a mental health professional could’ve just told me years ago and saved me the time LOL)

And re: Dyslexia! I am not dyslexic so I’m not qualified to give you advice about this; if anyone wants to pop in and share please do! The one thing I know that can help is picking fonts that work for you!!!!!!!!!! Using a screen reader can also help when you’re reading to proof read so that you can hear typos or wonky sentences that your eyes miss. (I do this for all my fics and it’s so helpful!) Also if you’re in a frenzy to jot ideas down in your notes to start organizing yourself it might help to use voice to text!

This is gonna be long, I apologize LMAO. Easy for me to scream and shout because I have ADHD but perhaps not easy to read if the reader has ADHD SORRY SORRY, take it a piece at a time if you must. But I’m gonna break this into two main parts, the ADHD Life Advice Stuff and the ACTUAL WRITING STUFF.

ADHD Life Advice Stuff:

I mentioned a couple things in my last post about how I approach writers block & burnout and I think tbh I approach this from an ADHD perspective, as well, particularly the burnout part. I don’t wanna repeat too much of that but basically for me, I think it’s just extremely essential to be honest with yourself, know your limits, and build your life AROUND the ADHD. You really can take any ADHD life advice and apply it to writing. I’ve done it a lot with house cleaning advice!

I’m a slow writer, too! And it’s taken a ton of practice to get to a place where I write longer fics. But like, five years ago I don’t think it would’ve been realistic for me to sit down and crank out a huge fic, I just didn’t have the skill and practice and confidence and patience yet.

This is not a race, it’s not a contest. Patience can be frustrating but getting to where you want to be might be a slow process and take practice, and if you sit down to write and think you’re gonna crank out 50k fic on your first try it’s probably not realistic, and if you push yourself and fuck it up, it’s only going to wind up being discouraging and unmotivating in the end. Imo it’s better to be gentle with yourself until you feel confident and have the hang of it; set smaller goals and be realistic about where you’re at NOW. It doesn’t mean that you will ALWAYS be at that level, it just means you have to walk before you can run.

I would say this also goes towards having a million ideas; THIS IS ME, I HAVE IDEAS ALL DAY ALL THE TIME, but I realistically know that I do not have the time to write all of them. Sometimes I write them down in my notes app so I don’t forget, but it doesn’t mean I’ll commit to writing a whole fic. Again, you have to be realistic about the time you have and the level you can write at. Prioritize ideas that really inspire you and make you excited.

In my last post too I mentioned that a lot of times my “writing advice” is more like, COPING WITH ADHD advice and tbh I think they’re inextricable. My life was a COMPLETE disaster before I found out I had ADHD because I was constantly forcing myself to try to live like other people, to some “normal” standard, and it’s just not how my brain works. It’s important to set up your life FOR your ADHD and just make things easier for yourself. And a lot of that is very personal and individual, so when I say be realistic and be kind to yourself, YOU know you more than I do. You will know if turning your wordcount goal into a game is more motivating than not stressing about your wordcount. You know if writing in a noisy Starbucks is more motivating than writing in your cozy silent home. I think sometimes you have to just try stuff on and see if it fits and create a routine that helps you, and sometimes the routine is gonna wear off and you come up with a new one. And it’s frustrating as fuck when you haven’t figured out what works yet. It’s a fucking process!!!!!!!!!!!! But there’s something to be said for being kind to yourself and saying “It’s okay, this doesn’t work for my brain, we can try something new tomorrow” instead of “This sucks and I’ll never be good at it and I can’t do the thing everyone else can do.”

So I’ll share some like actual technical tools now but I always feel like it’s important to talk about the ADHDness of it FIRST, like. This is you, it’s how you are. Find ways to make it work for you and don’t force yourself to use random normies’ routines if they aren’t built for people like us. Personally when I started being kinder to myself and making accommodations and cherrypicking random bits & pieces of advice that I thought I could manage, I became a lot more productive and had a lot more fun writing!!!!!!! This is like putting the oxygen mask on yourself before your child.

Actual Writing Stuff:

OUTLINES.

I feel like ADHDers don’t want to hear this LMAO. And it took me a suuuuuuuuuuuuper long time to figure out a method of outlining that worked for me. I was against it at first because it made me feel way too constricted and I thought I wouldn’t be able to be creative if I was sticking to one.

People talk about planners and pantsers with writing and I started thinking of my outlines as a TOMATO CAGE. (I found out this is also called tentpole method LMAO but I’m still calling it my tomato cage.) But picture that you have enough of a framework to have some structure and keep the story moving forward, but the plant will grow however it wants to and you can arrange the limbs accordingly.

I talked about how I outline a while back in this entry too so I don’t want to repeat too much, but basically I try to think about like what’s the structure and pacing of the story and build from there. For example, my longest fic on AO3 is called Tonight the Stars Revolt! and I started it by listing out 14 kinks/sex acts and arranging them in order of escalation. So that was my outline.

Chapter 1 – Jerking off in front of each other

Chatper 2 – Jerking EACH OTHER off

Chapter 3 – Oral

Etc!

That’s how the story started, that’s all I knew, but it gave me a roadmap to work with. So you can start an outline as vague and broad as you need to, and as you approach each chapter you can start adding more detail. You can also leave yourself notes as you have ideas, like as an idea strikes you, go ahead and park it in the outline where you think it might fit. This is so helpful if you're trying to build motifs or foreshadowing so that you can be sure to plant all those seeds earlier in the story.

And again, like I said with being flexible about routines and accommodations, it’s okay to rearrange your outline! It’s not the end all be all, it’s your story! I’m constantly tinkering with the outlines as the story evolves.

But for example, say you know chapter 3 is about oral, when it’s time to write chapter 3 you can then start thinking about what scenes you might want to include, like

Chapter opens with them fooling around in a closet

They get called away to do a mission

Mission is very scary! Action! Danger!

Blowjob when they get back!

And then you add to it EVEN MORE as you approach each scene. Like, when it’s time to write the actual scene about the mission you can break it down even more

Open with the team strategizing how to escape

They get separated

There’s a fire

I also like to choreograph all my smut scenes LOL so like when it’s time to write the blowjob it’ll be like

He grabs at Shiro’s waistband

Gets on his knees

Shiro is telling him he doesn’t have to

He does it ANYWAY

Shiro tries to pull out to not come in his mouth!!

So that way when it’s time to actually WRITE! I just have to look at the next point. Like, instead of climbing the mountain that is a WHOLE FIC every time I try to sit down, I can check the outline and go “Today I just have to write about the fire.”

It breaks the story into manageable pieces!! And if your attention span is such that you can’t focus for a LONG time at once, that’s perfect! And if you’re someone who can like get into the zone and need to be really tuned in to get there, it works for that too! You’re just leaving yourself a trail of breadcrumbs to follow so that you always remember what’s the next part you need to write.

I also prefer to write full screen so that I’m not distracted (I use Scrivener which has a full screen and you can customize the colors so I have full screen & dark mode!) and I keep all my notes in the bottom of the document, so I always to make it that I can SEE the next point at the bottom of the screen so I’m always sort of typing towards it. (Scriv also has typewriter mode which is awesome for this, where the line you’re typing on is always centered!)

SPRINTS.

This goes both towards the “small manageable pieces” concept but also towards the “set a time of day to write” concept. But if you have any friends who also write and would want to write WITH YOU to stay accountable, it’s fun to text them and you can both start the clock and write without distraction and then compare at the end. (I’m gonna come back to this in a sec re: wordcount games.) But having someone to spend that time with you really helps.

There’s a Discord bot called Sprinto that you can use to have it in your chat but you can run it on your own too if you want to have a log. I use this a lot! I also sometimes have “sprint time” with my friend who ISNT writing, like she’ll do her dishes while I work on my fic. LOL. It’s just about having someone to be accountable with.

PRODUCTIVITY APPS.

Speaking of sprints, for me personally I try to be like DISTRACTION FREE while the clock is on, and on days where my attention span is particularly garbage I have some apps that lock me out of distracting websites/apps. On my phone I have Forest App, I THINK IT’S A DOLLAR? But very cool and cute. It plants a lil tree and if you leave the app the tree dies and you feel bad. So I’ll put that on when I’m writing so that I don’t pick up my phone and start fucking around.

I also use StayFocusd on my laptop for Chrome. This puts a daily timer on how much you allow yourself to use certain websites and then locks you out. I tend to write at the end of the day so I’ve usually used all my fuck around time by then.

WORDCOUNT GAMES.

Personally for me, I don’t like to agonize over my wordcounts because I worry I fall into “quantity over quality” mindset. I just have my lil challenge to write 100 words a day, but other than that I don’t worry about it. But if that’s motivating to you, you can make it a race or a challenge. Even doing sprints you can see if you can write more than your friend. I think Scriv lets you set a word goal for a session so you can watch the words count DOWN as you’re typing.

I just know for me I have to turn everything into a fucking game to make it interesting LOL so I would encourage creating wordcount games if that will work for you.

TIME OF DAY.

I tend to write at night because I have too much to do in the morning before work, but I like to write in the morning on weekends when I have the day off. Figure out which time of day works best for you!!!!!!!!

Writing in the morning can be awesome because your mind isn’t smushed down by the decisions fatigue of a whole day. Writing at night can be awesome because it’s dark and quiet and time to be cozy. Maybe you’re most alert after lunch, idk man! Figure that out and work with it.

ATMOSPHERE.

When I write at night I like to fucking, put the appropriate music on, turn all the lights off, get my purple fairy lights going, light incense, have a snack, etc. This is gonna be different for everyone. I also live alone so I have the luxury of controlling the environment the best I can. But create a space for yourself if you can, something that works for you. If you get distracted easily try noise cancelling headphones, if you get overstimulated by something try to remove yourself from it. Wear comfy clothes if you need to, etc. Make it easy on yourself so that you can show up and be present with your writing.

I also wanna mention if you can’t write with music on, try ambient sounds. I know there’s a bunch on YouTube and some other writing sites but you can like, listen to ambient café noise, or traffic, or the woods! It can be really immersive!!!!!!!!!

TRY DIFFERENT LOCATIONS.

It can be helpful to write in a different location, if you’re able to. (This is not easy if you’re writing on a desktop but!!! If you’re able to move around sometimes it helps.) If you’re stuck in one space try to change the lighting, or hang up a new picture, get a plant, whatever you wanna do to make your desk feel different.

I do most of my writing at my desk, but I also have my WRITING CHAIR that I sit in sometimes, and when I’m really stuck sometimes I write on the couch, or on my bed! This is the same as if you go write in public. When I used to work on ships I’d go out in port and write in the woods, or in libraries, or in cafes. Inside the ship I’d try writing in my room, in my office, in the crew bar.

I think people call this ��change your environment writing” like I’ve seen articles about it and everything. But it’s the theory that being in a different space sort of unlocks different parts of your brain, stimulates you differently, etc.

OF COURSE, if you are too distracted where you NEED to be in the same old boring space, don’t do this!!!!!!!!!! But it’s worth a shot. This is my main trick when I’m STUCK on fics and it usually works. :D

and finally THINKING ABOUT WRITING IS WRITING.

I set aside an hour a day to write, and sometimes it's 53 minutes of zoning out to music and tinkering with the outline, and 7 minutes of writing LOL. It's not a failure or a waste of your time if you sit down to write and the process isn't JUST writing and isn't JUST words coming out of your head. I think there's a lot more to writing than the words coming out of your head. Spending time with the ideas internally and letting them grow is so important and like, I think if it makes you more in love with your story or more confident about the story you're trying to tell, the words will follow!!!!!! Make a playlist or a mood board or some shit, too. Invest in that time because it'll help you stay inspired. (At least, it does for me. :D ) I know there's a balance here on like, at some point you DO have to actually write the words, but I don't think it's bad to invest in your inspiration as part of the process.

Anyway I know this was a lot, but it was really tough for me to figure out what worked for me so I just wanted to share as much as I could think of at the moment. I’d rather overshare if it can help you!!!!!!!!!

Writing fanfic above all else is supposed to be FUN and if it takes you months to write 5k that is FINE. What’s the rush, what’s the race! Be patient with yourself and go at your own pace!

Check-in for October 24, 2023

I'm planning on doing regular check-ins that peeps can read or skip as much as they please. If you want to see behind the scenes of my projects or get to know me a bit better, feel free to peek below the cut! If not, just look at this color palette I made for my web dev class and admire it:

I know green and pink are my favorite colors, so I may be just a tad biased, but look!!! Look at how pretty it is!!!

I plan to use the palette for a website that is basically a guided tour of a fictional town that's populated by bug people, and while the colors used in the initial character sketches are still my preference, I don't think they look too bad in this proof of concept image! They definitely need some tweaking, and some details in the art itself need correcting, but all around it's not too shabby :>

I also made the logo for the website which, while uninspired, doesn't look that bad. I'm not in a logo design course, so I can't be too upset about that. I made two versions--- a light and dark one--- so that I could have it appear on most colors of background.

Also, I've printed off tons of art and stuck it on my walls over the past few days to inspire me. The art wall has been very successful in beautifying my space, but I've been a bit too worn out to draw much other than the start of a project where I draw individual generations of pokemon by memory. Venusaur looks exactly like I remembered it, but also nothing like that at all. Charizard's line only looks halfway decent by virtue of Twig existing.

I must say, though, that I am charmed by these drawings' doofy lil grins. Just look at Bulbasaur. He is raring to go! Charmander is ready to shake your hand! Look at these lads!!

I've been trying to learn Clip Studio Paint by drawing a new The Present is a Gift comic in it, but I cannot begin to explain to you all how intimidating of a program it is for me. I'm a Procreate gal, y'all. I have a conniption whenever I look at the Photoshop interface. When I look at this:

I am desperate for the cozy white space of this:

I spent over an hour struggling to draw a simple piece for Instagram, admittedly while desperately trying to get OBS to not give out on me while I recorded my screen, but I think that I'm slowly learning how to not faint whenever the Paint window boots up.

Anyhoo--- enjoy the WIP teaser for the upcoming comic featuring a chat between Dusknoir (piloting a KO'd Twig) and Darkrai amidst a cave-in. If I am found dead, know that said comic worked alongside Clip Studio Paint to kill me.

As an update for The Present is a Gift in terms of the fanfic, I recently broke 6,000 words for the first draft. I haven't been writing too regularly--- when I do, it's usually to just sit down for 30 minutes max to try and get a little bit of a head start on NaNoWriMo coming up--- but whenever I do, the words come in batches of 400-700+ at a time. My dudes, I used to take a week to reach the lower end of that amount. I've been beating perfectionism back with a stick while sobbing "Quantity begets quality! Quantity begets quality!", but since I've set myself a challenge to write as many garbage words as possible without editing them until the first draft is done, I've been writing--- and enjoying the process of writing--- more than I have in my entire life.

I've been trying to win NaNoWriMo, a challenge where you write 50k words in November, for the last 7 years. I resigned myself to being a NaNo rebel and trying to write just 15k words next month. But if I keep cranking out 1,500 words in under two writing sprints per day--- without properly trying to eliminate distractions--- I think I could actually win for once??? I didn't think Pokemon Mystery Dungeon fanfiction would be what gave me a fighting chance at winning NaNoWriMo, but here I am. PMD brainrot truly is a miraculous thing, but I'll have to see exactly miraculous it is on the 1st of November.

So... yep! I probably should have figured out a way to sign off on check-in posts before deciding to publish this. Oops. Welp. Um. Thanks for reading?

Sing The Ghosts A Christmas Carol - Chapter 6 (“Christmas Day”)

Well, this is it. We’ve pretty much reached the end of the story. I may not have reached 50k words, but I think this has gone over a lot better than I was expecting. Thanks so much for reading this fanfic. Minor writing blocks aside, this was a blast to write.

Never mind the fact that I might be writing some of those deleted scenes as “bonus chapters” to increase the word count shhhh.

Anyways, let’s check in on William, shall we?

Six bell chimes broke through the silence. The sensation of a cold tile floor chilled William’s back. He rolled onto his stomach, refusing to open his eyes until he knew the floor wasn’t just a blind hope.

Thankfully for him, the floor was no illusion. The cold feeling still remained.

One of his reddened eyes opened. The dim light provided him a warm, orangish glow. What was once just clutter surrounding a wide room now seemed like old friends welcoming him home. Even the desk was a fantastic sight for his sore, puffy eyes. “I’m… back,” he muttered before breaking into a fit of raspy laughter. “I didn’t perish in that lake after all! Oh, happy day! Oh, Merry…”

William’s laughter drifted away. He hoisted himself off the ground. What day was it, anyway? Was it still Christmas here and now? Or did that twisted creature send him a few days ahead?

He crawled over to his desk chair, then scrambled into a half-decent sitting position. His eyes darted to the computer. And, unlike the last few ‘hours’, the monitor was on. Animatronic roster and all.

William’s hands shook, but not with terror. He clumsily selected an animatronic, hit the “Start” button, then waited.

A small, plastic-looking bear crawled onto the desk. It raised the air horn in its paw, then stopped. “Can I… help you?” it asked in a gentle, high-pitched tone. “You look pretty stressed.” “I am a little stressed, but that’s unimportant,” William chuckled as he patted the bear on the head. “What’s important is today’s date. That is, to say—No, ask— What day is it?”

The robotic cub put a finger to his chin. “I think it’s Christmas Day back home,” he answered thoughtfully. “But I’ll have to check with The Puppet to make sure.”

William shuffled in his seat, grinning like a madman. However, he was still aware of his concerned audience of one. “You don’t suppose you couldn’t ‘jump-scare’ me and end the shift early, could you?” he asked in a (hopefully) restrained tone. “I really just called you here because I knew you could answer that question better than the rest… If, well, I’m allowed to say that around here. Y-Your name is Helpy, after all, s-so I figured…” His words tapered off as a new feeling settled in. Or, perhaps an old one re-contextualized? Whatever it was, it made all of his excitement turn into tongue-tied jitteriness.

Helpy noticed the man’s change in demeanor rather quickly. “Sorry, Mr. Afton,” he answered as he sat down on the desk, “but my air-horn doesn’t end shifts by itself. The others use it as a signal to close in.”

“Ah,” was all William could plaintively mutter before resting his head on the table.

“But I could help you get less scared, if you want,” Helpy suggested with a bright grin. “You gotta be pretty brave to take on everybody at full strength, you know?”

William stirred. Oh, right! The Ultimate Challenge! How did he forget? “I’m not up for the challenge today,” he corrected, raising his head a little. “In fact, after this session is up, I think I’ll take a much-needed break. It was a long night for me.”

Helpy’s ears raised. “Really?” he asked, putting his hands on his chin. “You’re going to take Christmas off?”

“Unless Golden Freddy says otherwise, of course,” William added swiftly, lifting his pointer finger off the desk. “Come to think of it, would you mind sending this message to the others? I would try to go through all the trouble, but—as I previously mentioned— I’m completely knackered.”

“Sure thing, Mr. Afton!” Helpy grinned, jumping back up to his feet. “Oh, just wait until the others hear about this! They’re going to be so excited!”

William gave a weak laugh. “I hope your sentiment’s correct,” he remarked quietly. “After all the trouble I’ve put them through, I wouldn’t be surprised if they felt the exact opposite.”

The rest of the “hours” flew by. As soon as the clock chimed, Helpy sprang down and hurried away with his airhorn. William, on the other hand, sat at his desk with a careworn expression. Was he as thrilled as Helpy about his breakthrough? Of course he was! To escape the clutches of death (even if it was a mere vision of some now-unattainable fate) without creating more problems was quite the feat for him. Even more of a wonder, his vow wasn’t just some last-minute realization as his other pleas had been. It, for maybe the first time in many decades, was a genuine promise.

But there was the problem. While his words were genuine, there was no doubt the validity would be in question. He—one who would even lie to himself just to continue some twisted reputation—had no right to change his mind so late in life. He had no right to receive kindness, either, though many a Christmas hymn would plead otherwise. “Why, oh why, am I assuming they’ll let me join their little bash?” he bemoaned as he buried his head into his hands. “I admitted my villainy, accepted it, then stomped on the souls of those who would argue with me. I even trampled their hopes before I even set foot in this place! No, not just their hopes— Their lives! Even those whose lives are more artificial haven’t been spared! Oh, woe, grief and darkest lamentations!” As if to punctuate his downward spiral, he slammed his head on the desk. Any light objects either leapt to the floor in fear or fell on their sides.

He broke in a sob, but it died down in a minute or so. “But I can’t give into this second dark abyss,” he muttered to himself, wiping the tears onto his sleeve. “The first one was bad enough. No. I’ll have to… m-march to their party and apologize. Just to put an end to this whole matter. If they ‘kill’ me off-the-clock, so be it.” With this last sentiment repeating in his head, he got up from his chair and stormed into the hallway. He listened for the uproar from some distant room, then followed whatever direction his ears caught it from. The closer he got, however, the more the nerves settled in. Even more voices chattered amongst themselves. Some whispered in shock. Others outright laughed to some listener, mocking the poor thing. At least one or two attempted to shush the crowd, but it seemed to be all for naught. The reason why made itself clear as William entered The Funtime Cove. For, instead of Funtime Foxy, it was now Helpy who was standing on the stage. And, judging from his worried posture, the news hadn’t gone over well with the others. “Are you sure you weren’t talking to Scraptrap?” another Foxy inquired, raising a hook amidst all the commotion. “I know the nasty fella doesn’t talk much, but at least he’s got a better chance to say ‘sorry’ than that landlubber!”

Scraptrap rose up to his feet to answer the question, but the term ‘nasty fella’ prompted him to sit back down. He was not going to start another barrage of insults anytime soon.

William, meanwhile, was more than ready to face the crowd. He put his fingers in his mouth and let out an ear-splitting whistle. “He’s not lying!” he bellowed to those who were less- easily startled by the first noise. Though this strained his ghostly vocal chords, it did prove itself effective. Group by group, the animatronics turned their attention to him.

William exhaled slowly. “He’s not lying,” he repeated in a calmer tone. “I really am taking the day off. And, if it’s possible, I’d…I’d like to make amends.“

“For all that stuff you did yesterday, or for everything?” Pigpatch asked, halting his banjo playing.

William’s face burned red. “As much as I’d like to say ‘everything’, I’m not quite sure if everyone is so quick to forgive,” he admitted, rubbing his neck with his hand. “So, in the interest of fairness, I’ll go with what I did yesterday. I… trust that might be a good start?”

The fifty-some robots chattered in low voices. Debates of all sorts bounced about. Would their ringleader allow this sort of behavior? What would happen if they let him join the party? Would he sabotage it somehow? Or was he actually being serious?

In the midst of all this discussion, one of the Freddy models got up from his seat. He calmly walked past them all, only to stop a short distance away from Afton. The bear adjusted his purple bow tie, then cleared his throat. “I’ll call it good if you pay up,” he said, holding out his hand. “Please deposit five coins.”

William broke into a cold sweat. He dug into his pockets, almost threatening to tear them apart with how furious he was. With a nerve-wracked grin, he handed the bear several golden coins. “I know you asked for five, but I’m feeling generous today,” he laughed shakily, slicking back his messy hair with his free hand. “Here, Rocky. T-Take it these ten coins. Please..”

Rocky furrowed his brow. He moved the coins from one hand to the other, nodding rhythmically. “Wow, you really don’t know how to count under pressure,” he snickered, placing the coins into his hat. “You’ve just given me twenty coins.”

William blinked in disbelief. “Well, then, you can keep the change,” he replied swiftly, trying to maintain some sense of decorum. “I clearly don’t have any use for them today. G-Go send them to a child in need in my stead, for all I care!”

Rocky looked over his shoulder, gauged the audience’s expressions, then refocused his attention on the miscounting dummy. “Thank you for depositing twenty coins,” he said as he bowed low, his voice remarkably more smug than usual. “Now go sit down somewhere before you pass out.”

In an absolute daze, William hobbled over to the nearest chair and promptly sat down. His head spun as the conversation started up again, but with Rocky now providing more input. The man clasped his hands together and slumped forward. He mouthed a silent plea, though he wasn’t even sure what he was “rambling” about. All he knew was that this was the final decision. The make or break point for how merry his Christmas would be. And perhaps the rest of his future, given how things could potentially go.

After many more minutes of debate, everyone gradually quieted down. A sound much like a spinning top became the only constant sound for a moment or so. The speakers whined, prompting William to finally snap out of his anxiety… Only to thrown right back in by the mere sight of Ballora on center stage. “As much as I appreciate how philosophical you’ve all been, I believe it’s time to put this whole topic to rest,” she announced with her usual calmness. “While Afton has been the most ornery, dishonest, arrogant—“

“Don’t forget pathetic and cowardly!” Lefty chimed in, gesturing to William with her microphone. “Saw that firsthand last night!”

This caused a brief uproar among the more rambunctious members of the crowd. William, though a bit insulted, simply nodded and returned to hiding his face with utter dread.

“And anything else certain ghosts may have seen last night,” Ballora resumed, her voice briefly gaining a twinge of unrelated sternness. “I say we should return the favor he’s just given us. Not only because of the usual ‘goodwill to all’ Christmas likes to talk about, but also it would be absolutely hilarious to try to see him hit a piñata blindfolded.” She paused to let the same groups yell out suggestions, taking this opportunity to wink to the surprised William. “So, unless Golden Freddy himself comes here and decides against it, I would like to re-invite William to our annual Christmas Party,” she continued confidently, raising an arm into the air. “All in favor, say ‘I’.”

“Aye!” yelled the pirate foxes, chuckling to each other at their little inside joke.

“I!” cried out the rest before throwing out even more suggestions for games their adversary could play.

William himself just raised his hand. His entire voice would’ve cracked on the spot if he tried to join in.

“Then the ‘I’s—and ‘Aye’s— have it,” Ballora concluded, advancing towards the edge of the large stage. “Welcome home, William.”

William’s eyes widened. His face flushed. He could practically feel phantom butterflies starting to flutter in his stomach. Was this instinct telling him that Justine had been haunting Ballora his entire stay? Or was it just the overall thrill of redemption and new possibilities bleeding into something else? Whatever this emotion was, he used it to power his emotions for the rest of the evening.

And, as much as I would love to explain how that evening went, there are just some things we don’t have time for— Especially if you, my reader, have your own business to attend to. So, instead, I’ll do what William has done and take a page out of Dickens’ own tale.

From that point on—though the challenges would resume come the next day—William strove to be a better man. A kinder man at least and a much improved soul at best. And, while the ghosts of the neon cemetery doubted his vow, they could no longer deny that something had happened. Something that Gregory and Vanessa—Who, to my current knowledge, have not been dragged into further, more unnecessary trouble—had already experienced ages ago. A change of mind and a change of heart that one could call miraculous.

And so, to add to Tiny Tim’s original prayer: “May God bless us, everyone” and may all of these souls share in that same blessing— Though I’m sure it will look different to us.

Hey there tearful gay nerds! Reset reporting! And today i have finished reading Ukiyo, written by Sharleena on AO3, it is a yoonmin fic and it currently sits on the throne of the bts fic with the most kudos on ao3, with a whopping 50k kudos, 8k comments, 10k bookmarks and A MILLION HITS!!

For now, its time for my thoughts

PLOT - It has a modern fantasy setting, taking place in Seoul, except we have fantasy creatures living amongst humans. Seoul has been completely taken over by mafias and gangs, with the most important ones being the families, and there has been some stuff going on between the families, of almost all of them suffering some form of loss, and yet all of them landing on the same name of the culprit: Kim Gunwoo. Yoongi, head of the Min family, is the one who gets the biggest lead on the search of Gunwoo, that lead being Park Jimin, a succubus s*x worker. The two end up bonding, and thanks to an attack at Libelulla, the br*thel where Jimin works at, he's forced to stay at Yoongi's house until it is safer for him to go back. The story follows their relationship evolving, as well as the families searching for Gunwoo.

THIS FIC SHOOK ME TO THE CORE!!!! Everything, down to the last details is PERFECT!!! This fanfic had me getting happy, sad and even angry. Your current fandom(s): Anybody checking my reblog spam knows that I am neck fucking deep in the Sonic fandom right now. Which I must say, is not the lowest I've ever been- one of my prior fandoms was League of Legends, somehow.

How did you first get into fandom?: Deviantart.com baby!! A really pretty girl in 6th grade introduced me to the website, and one day I finally worked up the courage to enter my favorite show at the time (Transformers Prime) into the search bar. I discovered that I was not the only girl in the world who experience the Blorbo Emotions and that blew my mind.

How long have you been engaging in fandom spaces?: Since 6th grade, as mentioned before. However, honorary mention- my mom is actually a part of the fandom old guard. She's been reading fanfic since before I was born. Strange thought, isn't it?

How often do you read fanfics?: About every week, I say. I usually find new stuff here on tumblr, and I troll the depths of AO3 every week and a half or so. (I usually just tend to tear through every fic that's been tagged with my favorite niche character and then get sad about it.)

Top three characters from your current fandom(s):

Anybody who's even glanced at my reblog spam knows that it's all going to be Sonic characters. More specifically, my beloved Metal Sonic, is #1. Obsessed with this funky identity crisis dude. He's the one I'm writing a literal novel for right now, because you can fit so much goddamn angst, mental illness, and daddy issues into this one robot it's not even remotely funny.

In close second is Omega. This is another robot built by the same guy in universe as Metal, by the way, so he's got a similar yet different flavor of angst going on. Omega was hit with the typical "you are what you choose to be" arc that most fictional robots undergo, except his choice was "I WANT TO COMMIT MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF VIOLENCE. AND ALSO MAYBE MAKE FRIENDS BUT DON'T TELL ANYBODY THAT" and that fascinates me deeply.

Number 3 is, uh, idk? Kind of a toss-up. Probably a tie between Shadow (who's the traditional pick for a hurt/comfort character in this fandom) or Silver (optimistic time traveler dude who is just. so tragic sometimes.)

Have you ever written fic for a fandom?:

The longest fanwork I've written so far is sitting pretty at around 44,000 words (it's an incredibly niche crossover between Babylon 5 and Knight Rider). My current WIP (the aforementioned one starring Metal Sonic), however, just broke 50k yesterday and I'm not even remotely close to finishing.

But yeah- I've been writing since 6th grade. Here's my very first ever fanfiction by the way, if you want an idea of how far I've come (or a good laugh.)

Have you ever drawn fanart for a fandom?:

I can count on one hand how many times I've tried. I can count on zero hands how many times I've succeeded.

Share a personal headcanon that you feel very strongly about:

If you follow my Sonic sideblog, you'll see all of my headcanons projectile-blasted at you daily.

Additionally, most of my headcanons are pretty fluid. I LOVE enjoying multiple interpretations of the same character, even and especially if they're contradictory. There's only been, like, two that I've ever been super crazy about.

The one that I'm weirdest about right now is Metal Sonic being some flavor of trans. This is the character that, upon gaining the ability to redesign their body however they wanted in canon, gave themselves long hair, a skirt, and a big dragon alternate mode. If that doesn't scream "transgender" for you, I don't know what will.

And finally, what does fandom mean to you?:

Fandom is a place where I get to share the joy of creation with other people! My favorite thing in the universe to do is "yes, and" people and develop ideas together. My second favorite thing in the universe to do is to encourage creators to tell me more about their fuckin' awesome ideas. My third favorite thing in the universe is seeing people react to my own work. I'm just writing the stories that make me happy, man, so to see people enjoying it brings me so much joy.
